Tampa Bay golf courses are continuing to experience record play as rounds continued to surge through the summer months. Rounds are up. Revenue is up. All is good as the “In Season” approaches. We are delighted to feature Seminole Lake Country Club as our cover story. Seminole Lake has a long and storied history that makes for an entertaining read. The property – purchased by the Cunningham family in the early 1930’s – was a working cattle ranch until 1962. That year, the property became a country club and housing development. Their slogan “Family Owned, Old Florida Golf” still holds true. To this day, the Cunningham family still owns and operates the club. The Tampa Bay area is most fortunate to be hosting three professional tour events in the next several months. The LPGA’s Pelican Women’s Championship is November 11-14 at the Pelican Golf Club in Belleair. Next, the Korn Ferry Tour’s LENCOM Classic will be played at Lakewood National Golf Club February 17-20, 2022. Seminole Lake Country Club Family-Owned, Old-Florida Golf

In 1911 William Cunningham moved

his family from Fletcher, North Carolina to St Petersburg, Florida and opened a hardware and grocery store on Central Avenue. From the onset they enjoyed success with their business venture. In the early 1930’s, as a result the family’s successful business, William’s son Howard Cunningham, Sr. was able to purchase a 300-acre piece of property west of St. Petersburg. He named it Pine Ridge Farm. Pine Ridge Farm was a working cattle ranch with all of the family members contributing to its operation. For many years the Cunningham family – including Howard’s three sons Gene, Book and Doc Cunningham – enjoyed the farm, which at that time was a long way from their GolfCoastMagazine.com

home in the city. While not working on the property, the family members used the farm as a getaway. The remnants of the family cabin remain on the property just west of today’s clubhouse. In the early 1960’s, the brothers were approached by a local real estate developer. He convinced them to turn the property into a housing development and country club. So in 1962 Seminole Lake Country Club Estates was born. Shortly after the start of the project, the developer was no longer involved and the Cunningham brothers obtained control of the property. As time went by, the community flourished and the club acquired an excellent reputation

as one of the premier country clubs in Florida, boasting a full membership and an active social events calendar. Arnold Palmer played an exhibition round at Seminole Lake Country Club shortly after the course opened. The club hosted several of the premier events in the Tampa Bay area during this time. Over the next four decades the club remained a successful private club, adding tennis courts, and a swimming pool to enhance its amenities. In 2007, golf course renovations were initiated including the resurfacing of all greens, refurbishing the bunkers and adding a complete practice facility. These improvements were very well received by the members. However,

membership started to decline in the wake of the historic 2008 economic downturn and the club converted to semi-private status. Since then, Seminole Lake Country Club has become one of the favorites of golfers throughout the Tampa Bay area. Its excellent location, consistently good condition, playability and service level bring golfers back again and again. Coincidentally, membership has grown as well. Just this past summer, the club installed an entirely new irrigation system. To this day, the club is still owned by the Cunningham family and maintains a very warm feel just as the three brothers originally intended when the club opened in 1962.

Tarpon Springs

Tarpon Springs Golf Course Originally built in 1908, the Tarpon Springs golf course follows the architecture of the time with small, elevated greens and quite a few doglegs. The course is very scoreable on your good days, while water hazards can wreak havoc on your bad ones. During the summer of 2014, all 18 greens and two practice greens were reconstructed. The greens now feature new contours and state-of-the-art Seashore Paspalum turf. At the same time, bunkers were re-sanded and the driving range renovated. Tarpon Springs golf course is honored to be a participating course on the Florida Historic Golf Trail. The “Trail” celebrates Florida’s early golf heritage by featuring publicly accessible golf courses throughout the state that golfers can still play today. Tarpon Springs boasts two PGA Professionals, each with over 25 years of experience. Together, they oversee golf operations, leagues, clinics, summer junior camps and much more. LPGA Stars Return November 8-14, 2021 For the second-straight year the Pelican Women’s Championship will be contested at the Pelican Golf Club in Belleair, Florida. This Donald Ross design has been completely overhauled to create a truly unique experience for golfers and fans. Last year’s inaugural event featured a star-studded field of elite golfers like Lexi Thompson, Brooke Henderson, Lydia Ko, Morgan Pressel and many more. Also competing in the field were local LPGA professionals like Brittany Lincicome and Nelly Korda. The event was won by major winner Sei Young Kim. The week of festivities includes activities for kids and adults of all ages. Children under 18 get in free and are invited to the Junior Golf Show on Saturday to meet and mingle with LPGA professionals and learn about what it takes to be a professional athlete. There are a variety of options to attend the event. Grounds passes provide the opportunity to walk the course and witness not only the impressive play of the golfers but experience the immaculate course renovation completed by Beau Welling Design. Fans looking to entertain family, friends or clients can check out the Lightning Lounge, a luxury skybox with complimentary food and beverages, climate control, private bathroom, televisions and observation deck. Valspar Championship Returns March 14-20, 2022 After one year on the April-May border, the Valspar Championship returns to March in 2022. Tampa Bay’s PGA TOUR event — with defending champion Sam Burns — will be held March 14-20 on the Copperhead Course at Innisbrook Resort in Palm Harbor. In addition to the unusual date, the 2021 tournament was played with limited attendance. In 2022, all of the bells and whistles that make it a true community event will be back, including a concert featuring Chris Young and Big & Rich. “We received a lot of positive feedback from the PGA TOUR that our 2021 event, with a substantial number of fans, felt like the first “real” tournament since the start of the COVID era,” says Tournament Director Tracy West. “However, we had to take a couple of steps back in our staging. We are planning on having full hospitality areas and expanded concessions.” Burns, a rising star on the PGA TOUR, challenged the tournament record with his winning score of 17 under par 267. He enters this season in the top 25 in the Official World Golf Rankings

after a string of impressive finishes following his Valspar victory. Burns defeated a field that included U.S. Ryder Cup heroes Dustin Johnson, Justin Thomas and Scottie Scheffler, as well as two-time Valspar winner Paul Casey, Viktor Hovland and Ian Poulter from Team Europe. Abraham Ancer, Joaquin Niemann, Corey Conners and Louis Oosthuizen — who are likely to be on the 2022 Presidents Cup International Team — also played in the last Valspar. American stars Jordan Spieth and Brooks Koepka, as well as Tyrrell Hatton from Europe, did not play due to injury and/ or illness. Bubba Watson, Phil Mickelson, Max Homa, Justin Rose, Gary Woodland and Patrick Reed were other top players in the 2021 field. “Every year is different,” says West, “but these are the kinds of players who have usually played our tournament. We expect another great field of pros, enhanced by our ample number of hospitality and entertainment options. The President’s Report The 2021 season is quickly coming to an end and what a great year it has been. This year’s tournament season consisted of Pro-Am’s, Pro-Pro’s and individual Championship Tournaments. The West Central Chapter Assistant’s Association also had another successful year under the leadership of Zorin Ilic. We also introduced the WCC Education Series led by Committee Chairperson Rich Unger. The West Central Chapter Education Series gave our PGA Professionals another way to earn MSR credits and educate themselves in different areas of the golf business. Our Education Committee organized 3 different seminars that included presentations by Scott Johnson, PGA with Golf Genius; Jamie Wilson with Puma Cobra; and Jim Mendenhall with Squamata Reptile Services. Thanks to Rich Unger for donating his time and supporting his fellow PGA Professional by organizing all of these events. An even bigger thank you goes out to Josh Poole and PEScience for partnering with us and supporting the WCC Education Series. The West Central Chapter Assistant’s Association has had another successful year. If a PGA Associate attends a minimum of three meetings and events, they can be awarded one of the $1,000 Association Grants that can be used towards their PGA Associate education. This year there are nine PGA Associates eligible to receive one of the grants. This is possible because of Gary Koch and his foundation, which have committed $3,000 this year to our Assistant GolfCoastMagazine.com

Grants. The 2021 grant winners will be announced in November. What a great season of tournament play we’ve had this year. Congratulations to all our fellow PGA Professionals and Associates who won events. There is one series of events that stands out more than most. Those were our Chapter Championships. Our 2021 Chapter Champion is also our Women’s Chapter Champion. Emily Motta from Mountain Lake Club defeated Jonathan Mansfield on the first playoff hole to win the Chapter Championship. Emily also won the Women’s Chapter Championship, shooting a 2-day total of 136 (-6). This year’s Senior Chapter Champion was Keith Kulzer from Golf Grove Driving Range. Over two days, Keith was 5 shots better than the rest of the field. Our Chapter partners allow us to provide world-class tournaments and educational experiences that our professionals have come to enjoy. Let’s thank them and make sure we give them the support that they deserve. The 2021 WCC partners are Horus Construction, Breakthru Beverage Florida, Jan Pro, Tampa Bone and Joint, Century Buick, Full Torque Fitness, PEScience and Golf Coast Magazine. In closing, I would also like to thank our dedicated board members including Bryan Moran, Mike Glenn, Keith Kulzer and Zoran Ilic along with each of our committee members. Similar in scope to the completed improvements on holes # 1- #18, new landscaping will also be added, and infrastructure improvements completed including cart path repair and replacement and irrigation upgrades. Four new pickleball courts are scheduled to

be installed as early as October 2021 at which time a new regulation sized croquet pitch will be constructed at the Tennis and Fitness facility. These additional amenities are sure to enhance the outstanding recreational experience that University Park Country Club members enjoy.
