The LECOM Suncoast Classic, a new Web.com Tour event, was played from February 11-17 at Lakewood National Golf Club – the inaugural event was a huge success, and we look forward to seeing it again next year. Then, in Charlotte Harbor, the LPGA Symetra Tour has added the SKYiGOLF Championship to its schedule, which is being played for the first time at Charlotte Harbor National Golf Club March 3-10. And don’t forget about the Valspar Championship, a PGA Tour event scheduled for March 1824 at Innisbrook Resort in Palm Harbor. Premium Club Fitting = Instant Success

Aging Golfers Recover Lost Distance - Overcome Injuries Through Custom Club Fitting by Leonard Finkel

It’s no secret that age and injury can drastically affect a golfer’s game, making for less enjoyable rounds. The good news - with a professional club fitting, most golfers can hit farther and more accurately so they can once again enjoy the game. Surprisingly, a Golf Magazine study found that 90% of U.S. golfers may be playing with improperly fit clubs. Says world-renowned instructor David Leadbetter, “It never ceases to amaze me that golfers buy clubs off the shelf and assume they’re right for them. Whether you’re a great golfer or a casual one, getting a custom club fitting is one of the quickest ways to improve your game.” The discrepancy between potential and actual performance is much greater for older golfers. Similarly, those recovering from injuries may have movement restrictions hindering their swing. Both groups can uniquely benefit from a fitting. By working with their exact swing mechanics, a master club fitter can maximize what’s working without putting pressure on injuries or areas of the swing that may be declining. One such fitter, Club Champion, has a proven history of success. Sherwood Schoch (85,Topton, PA) was a Navy pilot and Olympic athlete who holds the record at his club for shooting under his age. It increased his clubhead speed by 3-mph and helped him make better and more consistent contact. As a result, he gained 15 yards on his irons.” As for overcoming Schoch’s physical problems, Castleberry continued, “We went with graphite shafts for two reasons. Fox Hollow has hosted local qualifying for the U.S. Open and U.S. Amateur as well as qualifiers for the Valspar Championship, the PGA Tour event held annually at Innisbrook Golf Resort. The par-71 championship layout features five sets of tees and offers new challenges every time it’s played, mixing native trees and vegetation, sparkling lakes, sand bunkers and a variety of wildlife. Fox Hollow’s rolling fairways are a delightful departure from the pancake-flat layouts found elsewhere in Florida.

The third hole is a straightaway par 4 (measuring 451 yards from the back tee) that will challenge the most accomplished ball strikers. Viewing the hole from the tee there’s a water hazard left and OB right. A massive oak tree on the right pinches in the landing area, making the tee shot extremely demanding. The approach shot is uphill to a wide, narrow green protected by a deep bunker in front and more sand on the player’s left. From the tips, Fox Hollow’s finishing hole is a robust 445 yards. From the white tees it’s a slightly more manageable 429 yards. With water guard-

ing both sides from tee to green, the fairway appears to be an island of grass. Place your drive in play and your work is only half done. The approach demands a long, accurate shot to a large, undulating green protected by yawning bunkers front left and right. Chi Chi Rodriguez Golf Club Completes Major Renovations The summer of 2018 was an exciting time in the history of the Chi Chi Rodriguez Golf Club. It was a time of major renovations to the course that was constructed in 1989. All 18 greens – and the practice putting green – were renovated with TifEagle Bermuda grass. The overall size of six greens was increased and two other greens were shifted to allow for better turf maintenance. The greens renovation allows for more pin placements on the 3,000 to 4,000 square-foot greens. Other renovations include the addition of Junior Tees, leveling of tee boxes, cutting back of vegetation, and new steps leading to several tee boxes. As one long-time customer stated, Public Course

2019 PGA Merchandise Show

The 66th PGA Merchandise Show, the industry’s annual “MAJOR of Golf Business,” came to a close January 25, in Orlando, as it welcomed nearly 40,000 golf industry professionals from all 50 U.S. states and 89 countries. The 2019 edition delivered exciting product and industry announcements that energized the industry for the New Year. PGA Professionals and buyers uncovered the newest products, trends and technology from more than 1,000 exhibiting golf companies and brands. This included more than 200 companies new to the PGA Show, creating the world’s largest business-to-business golf event, within 1 million square feet of interactive exhibit, demonstration and meeting space of the Orange County Convention Center. As the world’s largest gathering of PGA Professionals, the 2019 PGA Merchandise Show attracted more than 7,500 PGA Professionals from around the world. The top five countries (outside of U.S.) represented in attendance were Canada, United Kingdom, Korea, Japan and China. The top five U.S. states represented in attendance

were Florida, California, New York, Georgia and North Carolina. The 2019 PGA Show was marked by significant industry announcements and product introductions including Titleist’s new ProV1 golf balls, Cameron putters and Vokey wedges; PING’s G410 drivers/woods; Callaway’s Epic Flash Driver; Cobra’s Speedback Driver; Odyssey’s Stroke Lab putters; Bridgestone’s E12 golf balls; and Mizuno’s new ST190 woods and JPX919 Hot Metal Pro irons, among many others. The global golf gathering began on Tuesday, January 22, at the PGA Show Demo Day, when thousands of PGA Professionals and invited golf retailers previewed and personally tested the newest equipment, training aids and accessories from more than 100 top golf companies at Orange County National Golf Center. The newest products were tested within 200 hitting bays, multiple putting greens, a golf cart track and the vendor village at the 42-acre practice facility, to create the world’s largest professional golf demo event. The President’s Report The 2019 season has commenced and we have a lot of great additions to our chapter. Keith Kulzer, PGA, our Tournament Chairman, has been extremely busy building a very strong tournament calendar. We will be competing at some of the top facilities in the Tampa Bay area. One of those events will be held at Palma Ceia Country Club, where our Chapter Professional Awards will take place. It’s an exciting time of year to recognize our deserving professionals for their great accomplishments in very deserving categories. The chapter calendar also includes our education opportunities, assistant professional events, and four stand-alone professional meetings. All of our events will have a new look and more PGA branding to bring awareness to our organization. Mackenzie Mack, PGA, our Education Chair, has been busy working on the four opportunities throughout the year. Our first one will be held on June 5-6 in conjunction with the Southwest Chapter. This will give our members an opportunity to become specialized in a specific field, leading into Certified Professional and finally Master Professional. GolfCoastMagazine.com

Todd Sammons, from the education department, will be the facilitator. Zoran Ilic, PGA continues to push our Assistant Association. Once again five events that combine education and tournament opportunities for our Associates will be offered. If an Associate attends a minimum of three events, they will have the opportunity to follow criteria to be awarded an Assistant Grant for $1,000 towards their PGA Associate education. The money raised for this grant came from our final Pro-Am of the year at Lone Palm. Last year’s recipient, Michael Ramos, will be recognized during our Awards Pro-Pro at Palma Ceia on April 4. Our chapter partnerships continue to stay strong. Thank you to Breakthru Beverage, Jan Pro, Century Buick, Horus Construction, Southern Homes, Performance Food Group, and, of course, Golf Coast Magazine.
