What club in your bag finds itself in your grip more often than all others? This is not too tough of a question. If your answer is anything other than PUTTER, you must be playing a game other than golf. For years, I’ve paid attention to just how many putts I take on each hole and round. Some may regard this habit as fearless, others as merely foolish. All I know is I’ve certainly endured my share of foul attempts to have my ball find its way into the designated hole. In fact, on more than one occasion, I’ve double-hit the ball with my putter, much to the amusement of my playing partners. In an attempt to quit providing such cheap and easy entertainment for them, I recently turned to my trusty PGA instructor, who has done his noble best over the past years not to cringe at some of my attempts to tap a golf ball into a hole. What I really love about my most recent encounter with a golf lesson is that with just a few simple and easy-to-remember actions, I think I can
now be more in charge of where my golf balls will travel on the putting greens. Of course, only time and practice will tell. Meanwhile, where will you be putting this year? There are more than a thousand golf courses in California alone. One of them is this issue’s cover course, Hidden Valley Lake Golf & Country Club, located in an area that many people claim has the “cleanest air in California.” Having grown up in a part of the state that has never even considered making that claim, this is indeed a welcome and beneficial attribute. If you can’t make it to Lake County in the immediate future, just browse through these pages for scores of other golf courses to enjoy this year. And remember, spending some time with your local PGA pro can be the best investment of dollars and time you’ll ever make to improve your performance and enjoyment of the game.

Clean Skies, Scarce Crowds and Plentiful Challenge Await You At Hidden Valley Lake Golf & Country Club by Andrew Hidas
S
ure, go right ahead and keep complaining about the crowds, and the noise, and the traffic, and the exorbitant costs, and the murky skies. That is your right as a free person in this free land. Feeling better for all the kvetching? No? Then you may be ready for a perhaps surprisingly brief trek to Hidden Valley Lake Golf & Country Club in southern Lake County. Here, the words “crowds, noise, traffic, exorbitant” and “murky” resemble nothing so much as a foreign language, alien and indecipherable for all but the most recent refugees from Urbanville, USA. Lake County lies just beyond what is known as the “nine Bay Area counties.” It’s nestled north and northeast of Napa and Sonoma, respectively. But at an hour from Santa Rosa and two from San Francisco and Sacramento, it is remarkably accessible
for the “way-out-there” vibe it projects. And there’s nothing the least bit inauthentic about that vibe either. With just 65,000 people spread out over its 1,329 square miles, you are a world apart from the crowds, noise and traffic of the big cities. Dotted with just a few bucolic towns beneath the ancient, towering Mount Konocti volcano, Lake County plays host to
rolling grasslands, 355 miles of forest roads, and multiple creeks that drain into Clear Lake, the area’s spiritual and geographic centerpiece. A prime recreational venue, Clear Lake is the largest natural freshwater lake in the state and the Bass Capital of the West. All that is to set the table for the wonders of the golf in this rural paradise, which hews to the same unhurried and uncrowded feel as the rest of the county. Hidden Valley Lake Golf & Country Club sits just off Highway 29 and under the coastal range that repels most of the fog and clouds characteristic of so many other Bay Area
locales. The result is a huge preponderance of sunny days ideally suited to a round on this challenging 6,667-yard layout put together by noted architect Billy Bell (Torrey Pines, among others). Hidden Valley’s front 9 plays flatter than its counterpart on the back end. The first three holes out of the chute will get your driver engaged directly with distances of 434, 483 and 442 yards from the back tees. Bell enjoyed the opportunity to create a number of elevated greens on the hills and swales of this rugged terrain, but the course’s 11 full-time maintenance staff members help lower the degree of difficulty by keeping the greens so impeccably manicured they’ll remind you of your bald buddy’s head right after he’s rinsed the last little nubble off his razor. The universally acclaimed 15th Signature hole beckons all comers who stare down its 250-foot perch above the fairway, their mouths agape at the view and their minds playing the angles on how they’re going to approach the cup 401 yards distant. You’re well advised to break it into chunks with a tidy tee
shot of a couple hundred yards to a safe landing zone, but if you’re the ambitious and tee-pounding type who wants to risk a long shot over the trees to the right, you might find your way to the green, glowing with a birdie possibility. But you’ll need a muscular shot, calm air and a nice dose of Lady Luck to accomplish the feat. No. 5 is another doozie, 354 yards of pure grit and bravado (you’ll have to supply both to make par). Pond left, trees and OB right, a large tree and creek straight ahead of you off the tee. Again, a layup 200 yards out is prudent, but if you want to try a muscle shot of 300 instead, it is there and available. A smallish and sloped green just adds to the overall fun. Luck is something you may also see fit to call upon at the gaming tables of neighboring Twin Pines Casino, where you can stay the night and use your day for 18 holes of golf. These Stay ’n Play packages start at what is perhaps the most ridiculously reasonable rate in the golfing world: just 79 bucks per person.

While you’re out and about, you may also see fit to visit the area’s growing number of premium wineries, as evidenced by Lake County’s listing in a recent foodandwine.com feature on “Five Promising New Wine Regions.” The other four are scattered internationally among Argentina, Chile and South Africa. And here’s a notion for where to put the money you save on a Stay ’n Play package to good use: Invest it in your game with a lesson or two or six from resident PGA Pro Wayne Clark, fresh off his 2013 Norther n California Match Play Championship trophy at Pebble Beach Golf Club. Clark’s amiability is exceeded only by his knowledge of the game he has been around nearly his entire life. Just don’t ask him for any gambling advice, though—unless it’s about the risk-reward of going for it on No. 15 and all the other quality holes on this ever-inviting golf course.

The intriguing name “Beau Pre” becomes even more intriguing when attached to a golf course tucked away in as picturesque and sparsely populated an area as Beau Pre Golf Club in McKinleyville, Humboldt County. Beau Pre means “beautiful meadow” in French, and the course fits that billing with lush fairways of pine and spruce trees, lovely ponds, and elevated tees to heighten the visual splendor. Opened in 1996, the Ranch Course was the first of the two sterling Diablo Grande courses to come on line in the spacious setting of Patterson, at the northern tip of the Central Valley. Designed by the internationally renowned Denis Griffiths (Fairmount at St. Andrews, among many others), “The Ranch” capitalizes on rolling terrain, a natural creek, and abundant other water features to make each round an exercise in graceful, ever-challenging golf. The 7,243-yard, par-72 layout (four other tee placements go down to 5,112 yards) requires some hefty driving, most dramatically on the 649-yard No. 12 signature hole that will ask for everything you have and pay off handsomely if you can give it. Modest rates include cart and range balls. Dramatic elevation changes, abundant oak trees and surrounding vineyards add spice and visual variety to this course, which has earned spots on “Top Northern California Courses” lists in Golf Today, among other honors.

Add in greens described as “fast and somewhat tricky” by its resident pro and it’s little wonder that the NCGA’s handicapping system identifies The Golf Club at Rio Vista as one of the most challenging courses in the state. Aficionados of traditional golf (at traditional prices) will find a highly agreeable experience awaiting them at Skywest Golf Course in Hayward. Bob Baldock designed this par-72 municipal course along classic lines when it debuted in 1964. Tree-lined fairways can cause the usual kinds of trouble for errant tee shots, though large greens tend to play true. The par-3s all play long at 140-200 yards, and two lakes insist that you pay them attention on the front and back nines. The three former tee placements (6,789 yards from the back) were recently augmented by a new 5,406, par-73 option from the front. The back 9’s bent grass greens have just been rebuilt to complement the dramatic 6,000 square foot clubhouse that opened in 2005. What hasn't changed are the incredible rates that can get you on the course with a cart for as low as $29 weekdays—with many other specials that can sweeten your day.

Classic” golf can be defined in many ways, but if your notion includes a landscape uncluttered by surrounding homes, with mountains in almost every direction, under huge skies, on a course whose history includes five PGA Nike Tour events, then Windsor Golf Club is the perfect example. Windsor's 1989 debut helped transform its namesake Sonoma County town from a sleepy rural hamlet into a classy destination that includes an inviting new downtown area built from scratch. An extensive fairway sanding program has now made it a 12-month course, all the better to accommodate the 12-month wine tasting that golfers can pursue almost immediately outside the course boundaries. Although holes 2 and 7 were both consistently ranked among the “Top 10 Most Difficult” on the Nike Tour, the 6,650-yard layout is relatively forgiving. With Charlie's restaurant offering a sophisticated menu and beautiful views from the lakeside patio accompanied by a club that continues to set the standard in Bay Area golf.
