A CANADIAN MOMENT Paired together in the final round of the Manulife Financial LPGA Classic - 48 year old Lorie Kane, who has registered 99 top-10 finishes in her career, played alongside Canada's top female amateur, 15 year old Brooke Henderson. It was a 'passing of the torch' so to speak as Brooke finished the round with a 67 - one stroke better than her Hall of Fame partner.

ard to believe that it is already fall and another golf season will soon be winding down. It's been a good one; and there is still lots of great golf weather left to finally break that number ... or maybe just spend some quality time with family and friends. Nice year on the big tour as we Canadians have had something to cheer about with Graham DeLaet and David Hearn both having solid seasons; both were very close to breaking through with victories. A fine professional rookie season from MacKenzie Hughes, tops on the PGA Tour Canada's order of merit, will see him move up to the Web.com Tour in 2014. Here at the magazine, we've had a lot of fun - as always - covering what's new, playing some great courses, and watching some great golf. A few interesting changes in the mix for 2014 - so slide and swipe on over to golfscene.ca and sign up for the INSIDER; the easiest way to not miss a thing.

Newly founded Triple Bogey Brewing is launching a 'golf inspired' lager targeted to, you guessed it, golfers. Craft brewing and niche style products certainly sure are garnering a lot of attention nowadays, not to mention retail traction with consumers ... seems like there is practically a beer made specifically for anyone and everyone nowadays; and why should golf be any different? It's a beer brewed by golfers for golfers and the golfing community fraternity.

We had an advanced tasting and can attest that it is a crisp, light and refreshing on course option. Nothing too heavy or too 'hoppy' as they say in the brewing circles.

In addition to the beer, the brand is also going to be designing a line of golf clothing plus a few extra goodies. And who better to oversee that than Geoff Tait*, formerly lead designer at Quagmire Golf and Arnie Apparel. A NEGATIVE

Spent the better part of an hour at this year's Canadian Open chatting (well, mostly listening) to a representative from Fusion IONZ; the company behind Fusion Ionz bands. The premise behind the product is to nourish the body with negative ions and, in doing so, diminish the harmful effects that exposure to toxins, poor diets, and positively charged electro magnetic frequency emitting 'radicals' promote - those would be cell phones and electronic devices. At birth we are 80% negative ions; a number that diminishes over time and, hence, could use replenishing.

So, the theory is that the mineral mixture that goes into the compound that makes up the bands emits negative ions at a rate of 4000 cc's per second. Those numbers meant little to me as I did not have any baseline reference. It's always a difficult thing to understand something that, well, one can't really fully understand. An ion is a molecule with an electrical charge (I looked that up), yet how and why it counteracts with the world and effects our body is probably owed a better forum and healthier debate.

POSITIVE

In the end I have worn one of the bands for a month or so and can't really say that I have noticed any tangible difference. Then again I am not (knock on something) suffering from chronic back or joint pain, which is one of the examples used when suggesting testimonial evidence. Mike Weir seems to believe it helps. As do many of the pros out on tour, so there certainly must be something 'in the water' or, in this case, within the rubber like compound of the band. And my guess is that it impacts all people a little differently based on a multitude of factors.

And, alas, the 'placebo' reference came up a few times. Which people always seem to deem as a negative? When in fact the power to 'trick' the mind remains a very powerful option when working through pain or perhaps just finding a little 'extra' confidence.

There is some validity to the power of positive thinking and or in the firm belief of something. Ask any high level athlete about the value of a positive, clear, and confident mind ... about superstitions, imagination, and visualization and most, if not all, will tell you that yes, you can in fact help or beat yourself.

Do what works, exhaust all options ... control what you can.

Pretty cool year all round with some great Canadian stories.

Smooth putting, fast playing, Brandt Snedeker (1) captured the Canadian Open at Glen Abbey. The amazing story of teenage phenom Lydio Ko (2) continues as she, yet again, captured the Women's Canadian Open. In similar fashion to the inaugural LPGA Classic in Waterloo, a multiple hole playoff was required to determine a winner ‌ Hee Young Park (3) lasted the longest. California's Eli Cole (4) took the Canadian Men's Amateur championship home to the west coast thanks in part to a very rare three putt by Listowel's highly talented Corey Conners. Smith Falls' Brooke Henderson (5) collected the Women's Amateur hardware, but couldn't overcome the unbelievable performance of Texas native Maddie Szeryk (6) who won the Canadian Junior Girls Championship by 14 strokes! The Junior Boys amateur title went to BC's Kevin Kwon. Calgary's David Schultz won the Canadian Men's Senior Championship while Kevin Carrigan repeated as the Mid-Am Champion. The Ontario PGA title was won once again by Brian Hadley whose score included a spectatcular round of 59. Shelbourne's David Markle won the Seaforth Classic. And Dundas' native MacKenzie Hughes finished atop the PGA Tour of Canada's Order of Merit earning him full status on the Web.com Tour in 2014.

RAISING EXPECTATIONS ...

David Hearn put together a career year (read our cover

story) including an 'almost' win at the John Deere Classic where he lost in a playoff. He was also the low Canadian at this year's Canadian Open and for that effort captured the Rivermead Cup (pictured left). Hearn's 2013 campaign including 26 starts, 18 cuts made, 2 top 10 finishes including a runner up at the aforementioned John Deere Classic where he shot 66-66-64-69. Total tour earnings for the season were $1,171,515.

Graham DeLaet has had a breakout season on the PGA Tour which will see him play in the Tour Championship as well as represent Canada as a member of the International team in the Presidents Cup. In 25 events, the Saskatchewan native has earned $2,703,700 to date thanks to a runner up finish as well as a pair of 3rd place finishes. Ranked first overall in total driving out on tour and 3rd in greens in regulation are just a couple of the reasons he is now ranked among the top 40 players in the world.

Mackenzie Hughes of Dundas, Ontario certainly made the most of his opportunities in 2013. A strong second half to the season including a win on the PGA of Canada Tour (formerly Canadian Tour), helped move Hughes into top spot on that tour's Order of Merit; which earns him full status on the Web.com Tour for 2014. The 2 time Canadian Men's Amateur Champion also teed it up at the Canadian Open (pictured below) and certainly appears to be moving in the right direction within the pro ranks.

We're big fans of the simulator experience just point us in the direction of the nearest Golden Tee and we'll aptly demonstrate how to hit the C1 to C3 slice under the waterfall to an elevated green. But to take that one step better is to actually swing the clubs while playing exotic courses in a relaxed environment.

So the other day we stopped in at one of the new GOLFZON facilities to see what their concept was all about. And it's pretty simple; a bunch of ready to play high tech ( 3 years of

development and over $10 million in investment)

simulators to immerse golfers in a realistic virtual environment.

Each sim can support up to six players and they offer over 150 courses. In addition, the software offers configurable green conditions, wind direction and strength, weather conditions and optional game modes including Stroke, Match and Stableford.

The locations are licenced so you can enjoy a frosty beverage between shots. Or, in some cases, while your playing partner plays multiple consecutive shots while trying to over zealously extradite themselves from a hazard.

Indoor golf is a lot of fun - and let's not forget the fitting centres, indoor lesson options, and full indoor practice facilities that make a lot of sense during the winter months; they will help keep you sharp and better prepared come spring.

On this day, Nazem Kadri remained an unsigned restricted free agent with the Leafs, but was recently inked to a two-year 5.8 million dollar deal.

Kadri's 18 goals and 44 points were second only to Kessel during last year's Leafs regular season campaign.

Kadri was Toronto's first selection (7th overall) in the 2009 NHL entry draft.

We had the opportunity to hit the new SpeedBlades from TaylorMade prior to launch.

It's always a big plus to be able to actually test out a product rather than rely on the marketing rhetoric which oftentimes reads more like 'hype'. Marketed as a distance club the new SpeedBlades did not disappoint. The wider topline and visual cavity back (speed pocket) did take a few swings to get used to, but as is with most new things once the eyes and arms began to adjust (and we made a few sequential solid contacts) it was immediately obvious that the ball did launch higher and with a very 'dead' (low spin) type trajectory that we are accustomed to seeing in drivers nowadays. For higher handicap players the primary problem tends to be getting the ball into the air.

Second to that is distance. And that is the spot in the market where the SpeedBlade is aimed. We've got all of the technical specs over at golfscene.ca - but for what's it worth after about an hour on the range - there is a club here that should definitely help players get the ball airborne and carry further. All of which adds up to making the game a little easier. And that's a good thing.

The 7 through 4 iron utilize a handlebar shaped speed pocket.

Removing weight and inserting an absorbing feature helps to increase forgiveness while also allowing the clubs to launch the ball higher with less spin.

There are not too many irons (some would argue nil) that come close to the overall aesthetic and solid craftmanship that go into Miura irons. And while the look and build quality of any club is important, perhaps the single overriding or underlying feature (pick your own adjective) is the soft 'feel' that is immediately evident when club-compresses ball-meets-ground-reverberates-to-hands ... or something like that. And that is where this review starts and basically stops. The Miura Satin Wedge we tested was simply one of the best feeling wedges we've ever hit. Trust and 'feel' with the scoring clubs is paramount and that's exactly what the 51 degree provided along with the ability to open and close the face for a little extra loft or, in reverse, the need to drive it in low. Spin characteristics seemed consistent (we were testing in cooler temps) and distance control was tight . If anything, our swing inconsistencies showed more flaws than the club itself ... sad yet true.

Brantford’s David Hearn had been hoping this year to get one step past where he exited the 2012 FedEx Cup playoffs and get into the Tour Championship.

That didn’t happen as Hearn was eliminated at the BMW Championship for the second consecutive year, one missed goal in a season dotted by highlights that fuel speculation about what is ahead for him, with next season set to begin in October.

In a year in which the lion’s share of attention for Canadians on the PGA Tour was focused on Hearn’s buddy Graham DeLaet and his stellar play in the FedEx Cup playoffs, not to mention DeLaet earning a spot in the Presidents Cup, Hearn had a few memorable moments of his own.

OPINION

At U.S. Open sectionals in Columbus, Ohio, for example, he tied for second with scores of 69-65 to earn his ticket to the nasty fairways of Merion where Hearn tied for 21st.

Not long afterwards, he tied for second at the John Deere Classic after losing to teenage sensation Jordan Spieth in a playoff in which Hearn missed some makable putts.

While he didn’t get the desired result in his first PGA Tour win, Hearn took something positive away from TPC Deere Run. “It was a big step forward for me,” said Hearn.

“Obviously, you want to be the guy who makes those clutch putts every time you get in that situation. Obviously, I was a little disappointed I didn’t pull it off, but in terms of the big

“To be in the hunt in the last group on Sunday and to play well and to have a chance to win the golf tournament definitely it was a good thing, but like I say, I’m working hard and can’t wait to be there again soon and I know next time, the result will be different,” said Hearn.

THE SPIRIT OF AMATEUR GOLF

CAROLANNE DOIG is a member of the Doig Family, Owners of the Seaforth Golf Club.

Hosting the Ontario Bantam Championship at Seaforth Golf Club was one of the most gratifying experiences ever. For three great days some of the best of Ontario’s young golfers, 14 years of age and younger, tested their skills against each other.

Better yet, they made new friends, learned more about themselves and their golf games, and added one more experience to their golfing resume.

With both girls and boys competing at the same time and on the same course, although in separate competitions, it was great to observe and compare the youngsters who were certainly not peas in a pod. It was noted by just about every parent, fan, and competitor that boys 14 and younger vary in height, weight, muscle mass, and maturity. Some were just slightly taller than their golf bags and others needed their birth certificates to convince us of their youth. With the girls it was much less of a physical spread. Almost all the girls were willowy and tall and of course the ever present pony tail peeked out from nearly every girl’s ball cap.

Our course, though not long, proved to be a reasonable test and Mother Nature added another

dimension by adding a biting and powerful wind to the first round. Scores came down considerably for the second round and all the bantams played with dogged determination regardless of the weather.

These young golfers were polite and friendly.

They appreciated our course, our staff, our volunteers, and the fans, and many genuinely thanked their parents for bringing them here and giving them the chance to take part. Many families were a part of the entourage and they made their visit to southwestern Ontario a part of their summer holiday experience.

A six hole playoff was needed to decide the boys championship and it was just as exciting and skillful as when the Canadian Tour was in town. The bleachers were full and the applause was loud as the event came to an end.

I encourage all of you to visit the GAO website to check out the scores and the winners of not just this year’s Bantam event, but all the GAO events held this summer. This is amateur golf at its best and it reminds us that the spirit of golf is alive and well.

Rumour has it that Lululemon have also tapped LPGA beauty Veronica Felibert (left) to become the brand's first elite golf ambassador. If you're one those glued to the big screen come Sunday to see who'll muster the big putt down the stretch to win a championship, you've probably caught a glimpse of these oversized putter grips in the hands of those trying to find that illusive read, then staring down that invisible line. on the path to better golf The passing of Labour Day marks the start of fall golf. This usually means that everyone's golf schedule starts to fade as we adults get set to put more time into our work and for our juniors it's time to get back to school and dedicate more time to their studies. With the daylight hours starting to shrink, I have a few suggestions to help maximize your fall golf and to help you prepare to implement some valuable winter training - to allow for a more successful spring.

In the fall many avid golfers will race to the course after work to try to get in as many holes as they possibly can; which in most cases is only a maximum of 9. As I have been preaching all summer we need a plan to best maximize our time. By scheduling our time more efficiently we will attain more success. When a typical 15 handicap golfer plays a quick 9 holes (90 - 120 minutes) of golf they will execute approximately 43 shots and have devoted approximately 30 seconds per shot for a total of 22.5 minutes of practice.

With the same dedicated time on the range they could hit approximately 240 balls. On the chipping green, the process would take half that amount of time. With this time calculation the player could hit approximately 480 chips and on the putting green even more ... let's say 600 putts.

Your game will be better if you bank your actual playing time for those beautiful weekend days and plan your practice sessions throughout the week.

“The year is a long year, especially this season when we’re going to start the 2014 schedule (in October). You have tournaments that start right at the beginning of January and they go until almost December,” he said.

“We don’t have a lot of an off-season in golf and I’m not really complaining because we do play golf for a living, but on the other end of it, there is a lot of stress put on your body throughout the season and if you’re not very good at managing your rest as well as your preparation and your play, it can really hurt your overall ability to compete,” he added.

DeLaet has also talked about the importance of a player pacing himself through the schedule and Hearn believes it’s something players learn as they advance into their PGA Tour careers.

“Sometimes, young guys, they kind of over-work them13809 Golf Diploma Ad - Golf Scene:Layout 1 5/2/12 11:01 AM Page 1 selves a little bit and you definitely see these great models of guys practicing for hours on the range and that certainly has a time and a place, but you have to find what your body can handle and what you can do,” he said.

“I think rest is an important part of having a long career and you have to have that trust in your abilities, do your preparation and then, take your mind off the game a little bit,” said Hearn.

“When I was 25 and I was on tour, I was probably a little more impatient. I kind of wanted things to happen right away. I think most 25-year-olds do and some guys are better at it than others. Some guys get on to the tour in their young 20s and have pretty good success right away,” he added.

“For me, it took a little bit longer to kind of learn my stride a little bit and I feel like I’m just starting now to play at the level that I know I can and, like I say, I feel like I’m starting to play better,” he said.

“I feel like I’ve got some improvement still to go and I know I can peak for tournaments and be there on Sundays and that’s what I’m trying to work for,” said Hearn.

“When you first get on tour, you think you have to do certain things to play a certain way and over the years, I’ve learned to prepare a lot better and know what works for myself,” said Hearn.

“You have a bad day and you want to go to the range and hit balls and you want to hit putts for hours, but you have to know that that’s not necessarily going to be the best thing,” he said.

“Your body will be tired the next day and maybe, your times better served just hitting a few putts and then, going home and relaxing or getting a workout in or doing something like that and taking your mind away from the game a little bit,” he added.

That doesn’t just apply to practice time, but also your tournament schedule, according to Hearn.

Spotting the trends is sometimes tricky, but then again, oftentimes dead straight, up the hill easy. And there is little doubt that the movement towards customization is no longer a trend, but instead becoming the norm. And why not? We are all individuals so why not show a little character. Custom clubs, split sets, belt buckles, personalized shoes, custom club finishes, colour coded grips and gloves, club stamps, monograms, crazy CUSTOM head covers, special editions ... the list goes on and on. The days of buying off of the rack are gone. Just as the days of playing the same clubs or carrying the same bag as the next guy are going the way of anchored putting. Golf is as much a social activity as it is a sport and for those who embrace that supposition, we say 'make a statement' out there. Have some fun with it. Just don't show up anywhere wearing nothing but orange. That's tricky. And, already taken - thanks to Ricky.
