ast forward a few months and many are still talking 'bout the weather (flash floods and high precipitation now vs cool temperatures earlier). Suppose the lesson might be to control what we can and make the best of what we have. Like, hopefully, a good set of rain gear and a dependable umbrella. Seriously, lots of great golf has been played despite Mother Nature and we're only midway through the 2013 season. Sieze the summer - winter will be upon us soon enough. We've kept busy getting out and ON THE SCENE. Hitting some shots, taking a few pictures, performing our own stunts, and collecting local knowledge to pass along to readers. Great spots like Horseshoe Valley, Sawmill Creek, and the Legends on the Niagara are all showcased in this issue. We were also ON LOCATION at the Steam Whistle Brewery where we set up for an impromptu photoshoot and, with the help of a couple of employees, were able to feature a few of the trendy apparel pieces on the racks right now. Rain or shine, it's been fun few months and I hope you enjoy the issue as we've done our best to provide you with more exclusive style content in a format that is both informative and enjoyable. IN THIS EDITION
cover story - Ian Hutchinson takes a look at the current trajectory of Graham DeLaet as he continues to perform well on the PGA Tour. In the notebook we take a high level look at Nike's wearable technology - The Fuel Band. Teaching pro Conor O'Shea provides parents with a quick guide to junior golf. Plus, more great golfscenery, and another new contest - this time for a Steam Whistle golf prize pack. Dropped a few new products into our gear, style, & stuff section as well as crunched a few travel numbers on a destination we will be visiting very soon - Myrtle Beach. A great time was had by all at the 2013 joe carter classic golf tournament. GolfScene was there to support the cause and take a few pictures. Speaking of which, are you following us online via INSTAGRAM and PINTEREST yet? Check us out there as we keep a 'visual' diary of the things going on up, down, and around at GolfScene. NOTEBOOK [ holding onto a smartphone while jotting down things with pencil - steve woods ]
I'M WITH THE BAND Been playing around with one of these new high tech 'bracelets' from Nike. The sort that calculate motion and provide feedback based on the continuous translation of accumulative data. Seems wearable technology may just be the next wave in the mobile market. This particular device is called the Nike Fuel Band. My first idea or golf-related-editorial-inclination was to calculate the steps taken walking the course vs riding in the cart ... a fairly pedestrian practice and I think we all know the former is much healthier than the latter. But the chance to walk the course never came. Each of my rounds with the band found me involved with some sort of work related media focus so the ability to move about unstructured never did materialize. Which got me to thinking. And rethinking what this band meant in a larger respect. Because I believe that all of us in some form or another are grappling with 'attached' technology and whether it's beneficial or restrictive to our being. Even now, as I am jotting down notes, the phone is buzzing - might be really important, right? [ INSERT DISTRACTION] On return to this subject (and, more importantly, after wearing the band for a few weeks) I can say that the experience has been uniquely positive. No, not profound. Not life changing, just a consistent and invaluable reminder to move my feet. To be in motion. Because the way in which the technology works is to accumulate 'fuel' - Nike's attempt to fairly calculate activity levels in si mple one button syste m toggles throu gh a way that counting steps or calories can't measure. Not perfect. fu el, calories, steps, a nd But, then again, who really cares. What it actually becomes is a the ti me - a nd a line consistent, non-obtrusive reminder to get up and get moving. At a gra ph (lights from red to green) keeps real-ti me base level it's self motivating ... at least thus far. And it is so nice to find a product nowadays where the core benefit actually outweighs tra ck of where you a re in relation to you r goals the myriad of complex features. (which ca n be set a nd or adjusted online) playing golf generates a lot of fu el - a nd we should re me mber that the next ti me we find a n excuse to pass on a rou nd - or to pass on a ny cha nce to get outside a nd get moving

The list of celebs is crazy ... Hockey royalty like Gordie Howe, Wayne Gretzky, Paul Henderson as well as recent Norris trophy winner PK Subban, former Hart trophy winner Eric Lindros, and more .... Baseball legends Ozzie Smith, Dave Stewart, Kenny Lofton, as well as many of the key players on the back to back World Champion Blue Jays - Devon White, Kelly Gruber, former manager Cito Gaston ... Football greats like Marcus & Damon Allen, Greg Lloyd, Marshall Faulk, Kordell Stewart ... Basketball stars Julius Erving, Moses Malone ... the list goes on and on and ... ok, who's ready to hit.
(ABOVE): Radio personality (102.1 The Edge Morning Show) Dean Blundell was on hand as well as his on-air entourage. (LEFT): A man who needs no introduction in these parts, former Toronto Maple Leaf centre Doug Gimour. 'Killer' retired from the NHL with 450 goals and 964 assists for a total of 1414 points placing him 17th in NHL all time scoring. On January 31, 2009 he accomplished another feat as his number 93 was honoured by the Leafs being raised to the rafters of the Air Canada Centre. And in 2011 he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame. CRAZY: Gilmour is the only player from his draft year to be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame after being selected 134th overall. In fact, after compiling 119 points and leading the Cornwall Royals to a Memorial Cup Championship, he was passed over during his first year of eligibility in the NHL draft. Proof that scouts can't measure a hockey player's heart.
Gilmour's story reminds me of one Theo Fleury who despite leading the WHL in scoring went 166th overall to the Calgary Flames

Montreal Canadian PK Subban, the 2013 Norris Trophy winner, drops his head after his drive found the trees on #6. In his third season in the NHL, 24 year old Subban tied for the league lead in points by a defenceman with 38. He finished the regular season with a plus/minus differential of plus 12. 5 other Montreal Canadiens defencemen have won the Norris trophy since its inception in 1954: Doug Harvey Tom Johnson Larry Robinson Jacques Laperrière Chris Chelios WOW: Harvey won the Norris 7 times
Paul Henderson is a Canadian hockey icon having the scored the game winning goal for Canada to defeat the Soviet Union in the 8th game of the 1972 Summit Series. Interestingly, he also scored the game winning goals in both the 6th and 7th games as well. A left winger, Henderson played 13 seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL) for the Detroit Red Wings, Toronto Maple Leafs and Atlanta Flames. He played over 1,000 games between the two major leagues, scoring 376 goals and 758 points. He played in two NHL All-Star Games and was a member of the Memorial Cup winning Hamilton Red Wings team as a junior. WILD: His game-worn Team Canada jersey from the series was sold at auction for over $1 million in 2010, thought to be the highest price ever paid for a hockey sweater.

Horseshoe Resort - Highlands Course
READY, SET, GO .... It had been too many years since our last visit to the Horseshoe Resort ... much has changed. And continues to change as renovations in seemingly all parts of the facility are underway (not in your way) as the resort morphs from being simply a ski and golf destination to a full blown year round adventure park. Located a mere minutes off Highway 400 (and maybe 5 north of Barrie) the new 'Shoe' is an inviting and accessible destination for outdoor enthusiasts. Our focus was golf, but there certainly is a wild arsenal of activities for all ages whether with the family or a group. Adventure seekers, young and old ... this is a place to tee it up, drop in, hang on, climb onto, throttle up, jump in, check out and check in.

OR HERE
Before and after the golf is where Horseshoe really has it going on. There is a lot to do here. Want to learn to ride a motorcycle? They have that. Or an ATV. Maybe an off-road Hummer tour. We had no idea but would have done them all had we had more time. Which is why we're going back. Awesome spot for mountain biking. In particular the downhill variety. There are tons of tracks and runs for all abilities. Everything from beginner type courses to all out expert type tracks with crazy obstacles and absolutely insane drops and jumps. Ever heard of treetop trekking? Basically, obstacle courses that are 100 feet in the air. Ok some are a little lower, but all require a harness, a little instruction, and limited fear of heights. What an awesome way to challenge yourself and or spend some true quality time with the kids. Great fun. And let's not forget the zip lines - 900 feet of pure adrenaline rush.
AND HERE
And we must mention the third course. Horseshoe has what we'll deem a 'championship' style mini-putt course that is every bit as challenging as the real thing. Ideal spot to gather the family for some flat out, heyyou-hit-my-ball, fun and or get serious with your buddies whilst you wager a few bucks and or a beverage. Then let's see ... in the adventure park there is a rock wall, a maze, euro bungy, aqua ogo (basically you inside of an inflatable ball rolling down a hill), a real life size mining game, horses, parks for the toddlers, pools, and more. There's a crazy amount of things to do, so plan to stay a while or, in our case, plan a few trips back.
OR HERE
We love playing golf. But honestly, when you can also do so much more - especially the sorts of things one can't do at traditional themed style parks or urban areas - it makes a stay and play style offering at a resort like Horseshoe so much more enticing. Less walls, less structure and a lot more get up and go style outdoor adrenaline filled adventure. Horseshoe offers just that. Discover it for yourselves.

Impact Position Weyburn Saskatchewan's Graham DeLaet continues to ascend up the leaderboards on the PGA Tour. And most would agree, it's only a matter of time before the tour's #1 ball striker breaks through with a win. by Ian Hutchinson
The danger with writing about Graham DeLaet is that he’s liable to make the stor y out of date before readers get a chance to peruse it. After finishing 3 rd at the Travelers Championship, DeLaet tied for 8 th at the AT&T National before tying for 30 th at the Greenbrier Championship. Graham DeLaet tweeted that he had made it into the British Open at Muirfield through the world golf ranking, where he was listed as 67th. DeLaet will likely be the lone Canadian in the field at the Open.

tons of people and they were making noise on the first tee, I hit a perfect tee shot down the middle and we were just kind of off. Even if he should briefly stumble, there would be no need for panic. What Zokol is suggesting is typical of development, particularly as you adjust to life on tour with new golf courses, hotels, cities and opponents. On the course, the first concern is keeping your status on tour, which DeLaet did by finishing 100th on the 2010 money list, but then he missed the better part of 2011 after surgery to repair a herniated disc. Over the years, he’s learned the importance of pacing himself in his number of tournaments over the course of the season. Even when he teed off at the Travelers, he noticed a difference compared to the last time he was in the final group in New Orleans last year. At the 2012 Zurich Classic, he was one off the lead going into the final round, when he shot a one-under 71 to tie for fourth.
“I remember walking off the first tee in New Orleans and kind of looking around and thinking, `Wow, this is amazing. This is what you play for,’” he said. “I felt the same excitement (at this year’s Travelers). I wouldn’t say I had an expectation of being there, but I felt like it was where I deserved to be and so, I wasn’t superexcited about everything that was going on. I just focused on what I needed to do,” said DeLaet. “(In New Orleans), I felt like I got a little bit sidetracked, just the first couple of holes and after that, I felt like I did a pretty good job with the situation,” he said. “(At the Travelers), I got on that tee and there were tons of people and they were making noise on the first tee, I hit a perfect tee shot down the middle and we were just kind of off,” he said. ON THE SCENE : Sawmill Creek
Everyone loves a road trip. What's not to like ... the open road, a chance to experience a place we've never been. Or in golfing terms, an opportunity to play a course we've never played. And that's the perspective we packed up with as we left the considerable chaos of the GTA in the rearview and pushed the pedal down all the way to Sarnia. DESTINATION SAWMILL CREEK Sawmill Creek (The Saw) is a golf resort and spa situated just outside Sarnia. The property is home to a very large and unique style clubhouse. Inside you're treated to all of the ammenities we've come to expect in the modern era - plus the spa of course. On the second floor of the clubhouse there are rooms for overnight accomodation. Each room is unique in it's design and all are decked out with everything you need. There is also double room over the proshop think Crow's Nest at Augusta - which were our digs for the night. This is as good as it gets when you're a golfer. Toss the bags, grab the clubs ... LINKS & THAT The course itself is a links inspired design. Both Rene Muylaert and Doug Carrick had a hand in its construction. And while architecture aficionados might find similiarities to other work, we found the course to be refreshingly free from any direct comparables. Which is sort of the way we feel about most links courses as they tend to be influenced by the contours of the land rather than the whims of an artist's blueprint. One thing we did notice very early on was the way in which the bunkering was being left in a very natural state. This created a few crazy lies, but certainly provided the feel and authenticity of an old world style environment. As did the fescue which lines most of the fairways. Well crafted mounding combined with the whispy, and pesky, fescue provided a nice contrast and clear sightlines. Greens were in great shape, as were the fairways. As with most links tests, the tee shot is at a premium. Finding the fairway is a must as playing from uneven lies and thick fescue is nary an easy alternative. Pace of play was good - nice variety of holes water definitely in play in a few spots - and after suffering a few early bogies while getting used to the nuances we settled in for an enjoyable round. The natural state in which the bunkers and fescue were left provides some old world charm to the design - plus some 'delightfully' awkward recovery shots.
If you're following us on INSTAGRAM you would have already perused this pic ... as on this very humid afternoon, it most definitely was pool time.
We never did make it into the spa but for those seeking solace and a chance to 'relax and rejuvenate' Sawmill has that covered. Great spot to unwind after a round on the links and or before a good meal in the restaurant.

ADVICE FROM THE PROS
Teaching Pro
A Parents Guide to Junior Golf
Conor O'Shea l
offers up some helpfu
advice for parents with respect to junior golf ... What age should
my child start golf? Between 5-7 years old is generally a good age for your son or daughter to get involved in a weekend clinic or take part in a golf camp. Find programming that gets your child excited about the game, introduces them to basic core concepts, and emphasizes fun. New age junior camps are a mixture of golf games and coordination exercises. Not only does it make golf fun for the next generation of golfers but it’s on trend with where golf is heading.
What about
playing in competition at a young age. The CJGA linkster tour along with the US Kids Niagara Tour are great places to start. If you are not sure if your child is ready to compete, check out some results, find out what the kids are scoring and compare that to the yardages your son GolfScene TM

Summer 2013
or daughter is currently playing from. Linkster golf can be a lot of fun and has a history of producing great junior players (14-18) - BUT PLEASE REMEMBER this is their experience not yours.
How can I intro-
duce my older (10-14) son or daughter to golf? I don’t think they want to compete in golf but I want them around the game. A lot of the established golf courses have junior golf programming that is geared towards these specific needs. Many academies and courses run junior leagues as well as have junior golf clubs programs where kids get together and play on a bi-weekly basis with each other. I would suggest picking an academy or course that is close to home and to make sure that the curriculum and philosophy meets your needs.
nice to hear a few clubs are resurrecting the caddie program ... great way for kids to learn the game and earn few bucks
My child is really showing
an interest in the game and the desire to play at a high level? help me understand the tournament system in Canada.
As far as competition goes, the steps you should follow. Step #1 Local Each region generally has an entry level junior tour. In my area, for example, it's called the Hamilton Halton Tour. This is a great way for kids to get introduced to the game, at a minimal cost, to see if they enjoy it. To find out what the local junior tour is in your area contact your local golf course. Step #2 Regional There are two great junior tours in Ontario that run events across Canada. Both provide kids an opportunity to improve their games and gain exposure to bigger events. The CJGA and Maple Leaf Junior Tour are fantastic options for juniors to compete in multi-day events. Step #3 Provincial The GAO (Golf Association of Ontario) operates provincial championships. When the timing is right and your kids are exhibiting success at the lower levels, I would suggest trying to qualify for some of the GAO events. Step #4 National Level Golf Canada offers a series of National events under the Future Links banner. These events tend to draw top level players from across Canada. They also host the Canadian Junior, which is the National Championship for Junior golf in Canada. Golf Scholarships? If you would like them to play NCAA college golf someday, it's
a good idea to play some events south of the border between the ages of 16-18. Playing in the U.S. let’s juniors visit US colleges as well as perform in front of college coaches and recruiters. Talk to your golf coach or a CPGA pro if you need helping deciding which events to enter.
What about a golf coaching ? Golf Coaching is becoming more and more popular as the landscape of junior golf evolves. NCAA coaches now are committing to players earlier than ever so “showing signs” and getting a plan in place at a young age is important. Modern day golf coaches have to be competent in all aspects of the game to help / mentor aspiring juniors to play at a high level. Many of the coaches in your area have a history of producing great talent and are familiar with what has to happen over a junior golfers 3-5 year playing career if they want to play at the next level. Advising families has become a major role for many coaches trying to get prepare kids for the next level. Conor provided us with a list of some of the top coaches in the region ... while it is by no means exhaustive we can say that the names on this list are reputable from GolfScene's experience (many of which are / have been contributers to the magazine) - good guys, who know their stuff PUBLIC Coaches Conor O’Shea Dave Smallwood Sean Casey Henry Brunton Andrew Ross Reggie Millage Bradlee Ryall

nown more for its mainstream tourism attractions, the golf in Niagara Falls should not be overlooked. During a recent refresher visit to the area it didn't us long to remember why the region remains one of Ontario's premier golf destinations. The Niagara Parks Commission alone operates three outstanding courses which was the focus for this issue's 'point-of-view'. Having attended the grand opening of the Legends on the Niagara, it was nice to return and reunite with both Ussher's Creek (McBroom) and Battlefield (Carrick). And while opening day was partially rained out ... on this day the weather decided to pseudo co-operate - at least until the final few holes. After that the skies opened up which meant we were not be able to scatter across town to tee things up at Stanley Thompson's historic Whirlpool ... and so the story goes.

ON THE SCENE : NIAGARA PARKS GOLF
Ussher's Creek is a master lesson in subtlety as Thomas McBroom employed a light-handed technique to this design. Meandering its way through the vast wetlands, the course softly blends traditional tree lined holes with splashes of fescue, tightly mowed greenside fall-offs, and very natural bunkering. Without the aid of elevation changes the course still generates great visual lines which provide depth and help guide a player through the layout. No real need for a yardage book as the shape of the holes are very clearly marked by the design elements. And the luxury of a large property provides a feeling of privacy as we hardly heard or saw another foursome even though the
course was fairly busy. The creek for which the course is named weaves its way throughout and adds a nice visual element without really coming into play until the approach at 18, which involves a carry. Ussher's Creek is a forgiving design, yet provides its fair share of challenges. Which is probably why after playing a few holes you start to think about how different, yet pleasant a round you're having ... dare we say it's almost like the course assumes the role of ally versus adversary. Sometimes, some things just seem to work without anyone really needing to over-analyze, disect, or understand why.

Mighty fine clubhouse at the Legends facility. Large enough to handle just about any sized gathering - which makes sense seeing as they have 27 holes (Chippawa executive course complements the larger championship courses). The clubhouse design incorporates a lot of the historic traditional feel of the region with some added modern flair. And there is a great patio which overlooks the water and 18th green. Perfect spot for a post round beverage, or in our case, a hearty morning breakfast before the first tee. And let's not forget lunch between rounds? - because playing both courses in one day, we can attest, is a great way to experience the Legends.
plenty of great seats on the patio - ideal spot to play a rmchair caddie for the grou ps coming in ... ... the dra matic bu nkering is su re to get you r attention on the Battlefield cou rse - nice added re minder of where to avoid - plus a little extra a nxiety to ma nage - hope nobody expects a cou rse called Battlefield to be without peril
It's hard not to like a Doug Carrick design. Wide sweeping fairways, subtle greenside mounding, judiciously placed traps, and large inviting greens seem to be staples on his courses and Battlefield is no exception. Everything you need to see is right there in front of you and the contours provide nice sightlines and depth with which to visualize shots. Greens were in great shape - but you'd better be a good lag putter or it's easy to card a few dreaded 3 taps. And again, akin to Ussher's Creek, because the property is so large and outside of the finishing holes, which by design converge on the clubhouse, there are very few times that other holes are even visible, making for a very serene environment. Add to that the natural soundtrack (birds singing) of the region and you have the backdrop for a very special golfing experience.

Whirpool is just that. We didn't get the chance to play Whirlpool on this trip - rained out - which was super-unfortunate because for those who have played it (count us in - though it's been a few years) it really is a nice old track. Stanley Thompson's traditional parkland design is a throwback to a day when golf was more about accuracy and precision and not purely designed around power. Choose your approach irons carefully as the greens are small and require accurate distance control. Opened in 1951, and set against the backdrop of the Niagara Gorge, Whirpool has seen it's fair share of championships as well as pay and play golfers. Since its inception, over a million players have chosen to teed it up there ... which comes as no surprise to the members of that group.

dence, which goes along with what Zokol said. The key is really not allowing the disappointments that can hit anybody eat you up in the process. “Even early last year when I would get to 12th place, I’d see myself on the leaderboard and I would think in the back of my head, even if it’s only Friday, that if I can 13809 Golf Diploma Ad - Golf Scene:Layout 1 5/2/12 11:01 AM Page 1 kind of maintain this position, I’ll make a cheque for 100 grand and this and that,” said DeLaet earlier this year. “I don’t think like that anymore. If I’m in 12th, I want to get to eighth and if I’m in eighth, I want to get to fifth and I think that’s the progression of my game. I just feel like I’m maturing as a player and just kind of finding my spot out here,” he said. It’s not about playing defence in order to survive on tour. It’s now about upward mobility to succeed on tour. “I’m not worried about making enough money to keep my card anymore. It’s more about putting myself in that position to win and once I get there, just finishing it off and that’s the last little step, I guess,” said DeLaet, remembering early days on the Canadian Tour.

“I had chances to win and never was able to really do it and the more and more times I was there, the more comfortable I became, then there was the breakthrough win in Montreal and then, I felt like I could win every week out there,” he said. “Obviously, the competition is more difficult out here and you’ve got to really be on your game to be in that position, but at the same time, I feel like I do have the skill set to be there and it’s just kind of believing in that and going from there,” he said. That will be a big step, but once he makes it, which could be soon, he’ll know he’s well-prepared to go beyond that milestone.▪

CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP PREPARATION Now that mid-summer is upon us, most club members have Club Championships approaching. One of my mentors at the Galt Country Club, the first head professional I worked for, was Albert Southgate. Albert would always say the club championship meant 10 more shots on the score and an extra hour to play! But it doesn’t have to be this way.
I have compiled some helpful tips to help you get your game ready and, hopefully, have a more successful club championship in 2013. • Take some time to sit down with your day timer and schedule some some extra time to prepare. • Create a practice schedule that addresses your weaknesses. If you feel you need some help contact me for some quick advice and or book a lesson that is directed at your problem areas. (TIP: at club championship time the range gets packed, yet the chipping and putting green is generally not. To lower your scores, focus on that area of your game first) • Have a game plan for how you want to play the course. I spend a lot of time accompanying my players during practice rounds for major events. These practice rounds include strategies that will best move them through the golf course to produce the best score possible. They include proper shot and club selection. Best target lines and spots to target on the greens. These on course strategies allow players to have a clear and committed sense and are rarely deviated from during the event. It is important to play your game and not to react to playing partners. • Be prepared. Arrive with sufficient time to go through a dynamic warm-up. Build in time for pre-tournament registration etc. Also prepare in advance for all weather conditions. Have proper nutrition and hydration available as needed. Best of luck with you Club Championship this year. I hope these tips help. IF YOUR SERIOUS ABOUT YOUR GAME COME SEE US AT THE GPC WWW.GOLFPERFORMANCECENTER .CA

SCATTER Alas, just the sort of thing we like to see after the round (or at the end of a magazine) Surprise, surprise when a little well placed marketing 'creates' a customer. Once inside we passed on the wings, but opted for some bacon wrapped meatloaf (highly recommended) and a couple of frosty beverages. And our stop got even better when the guy at the table next to us sat down with a copy of GolfScene's spring edition. Then game 6 of the Stanley Cup playoffs started ...
ok, back to whatever else I wasn't really doing ...
