Gay-run Atlanta fashion gala helps local homeless teens not just survive, but ‘Thrive’
P
eople have been telling Rick Westbrook for years that his organization needs a gala, but there’s one significant problem with throwing such a grand event.
“It’s hard for me to imagine these kids getting thrown out on the streets because they’re gay,” he adds. «These teenagers are our future. They need to be loved and shown respect and given guidance.”
“Galas cost a lot of money to produce,” says Westbrook, executive director of Lost-n-Found Youth, which helps find permanent housing for Atlanta’s homeless LGBT young people.
Both Hightower and Westbrook hope the event will raise awareness about Atlanta’s LGBT homeless youth with a broader audience.
Lucky for Westbrook, and for Atlanta’s gala-loving gays, one just landed in his lap. Enter Buckhead salon owner Steve Hightower. “In my career as a hairdresser, many people have helped me, and I wanted to give back to the community,” says Hightower, who owns Steve Hightower Hair Salon and Day Spa. “I have worked on many hair shows in New York, Dallas, Chicago and Paris, so I thought I will do my own show and let it benefit someone who needs help.” Thus was born the Thriving Children Gala Fashion Show. On April 29, the 7th annual event benefits Lost-n-Found Youth. “I started out helping small children; then I realized teens are being neglected,” Hightower says. “Everyone wants to help small children but not teens. They are pushed aside. So I have been helping teens for the past four years.

“This gala gives us more exposure and gets people talking about this problem,” Westbrook says. “It’s not going to go away. It’s going to get worse before it gets better.” If last year’s event is any indication, Lost-n-Found should get plenty of attention and funds. Hightower hopes to raise $150,000 for Lost-n-Found. The 2015 Thriving Children Gala raised $113,000 for the Center for Children & Young Adults. Westbrook says the money will help with everyday needs for LNF youth, including food, shelter and clothing, as well as counseling and other assistance. The funds will also help ongoing renovations on the organization’s house, which will eventually accommodate up to 18 youth a night. To raise that kind of money, Hightower promises attendees a chic event at the Fox Theatre’s Egyptian Ballroom. Along with award-winning local anchor and television host Karyn Greer, Hightower will co-emcee a night packed with entertainment. Highlights include a high-end fashion show featuring local designers and pro-
fessional runway models, a silent auction, live auction, and a full orchestra. The sit-down event will also offer top notch entertainment by Atlanta Gay Men’s Chorus and internationally known Cher impersonator and RuPaul’s Drag Race alum Chad Michaels. “I’m looking forward to entertaining the people involved in helping out with such an important cause,” Michaels tells Goliath. “As a performer, I have met so many street kids over the years outside of the clubs and venues. Showing support, kindness, love and an opportunity to succeed is the most important thing we can do for these young men and women.”

Food halls cover gay foodies from sit down to hang out, from coffee to cocktails.
Thanks to places like Krog Street Market and Central Food Hall at Ponce City Market, a national surge that started as part of mixed-use developments in New York and L.A. is becoming an entrenched part of the culture and scene. Naturally, gay men are leading the way. Food halls are finding the leeway to take hold because they offer something Southerners like – namely, lots of food in unending supply and variety – couched in our slow embrace of metropolitan sophistication. Like other facets of world class in-town living on which gay Atlanta leads the charge – take the BeltLine, home to both the aforementioned markets – food halls are an urban concept who’s time has come. This time last year, the foodies at Eater declared a food hall boom in the U.S. Atlanta’s versions followed notable openings in New York, L.A., Chicago and Seattle. Long a tradition in Europe, think of these gathering places as grown up versions of food court convenience with the fully realized potential of your favorite food truck craftsmen. Cape Dutch offers a sustenance shelter for gay Midtown foodies swept up in an eatery whirlwind of style over substance
N
ot easily impressed by the prospect of another new restaurant, my date and I were more excited about the opportunity to catch up with each other than the chance of being gastronomically wowed – especially in Midtown on a random Thursday. Call us cynical gays, mostly because we are. But give us a break. In a city full of four-star mainstays and celebrity cuisine, high-standard flash and “named” chefs can feel like a dime a dozen and leave a gay gourmand exhausted.
Turns out, braai is the grilled food experience that two cynical Southern queens raised on meat and potatoes didn’t know we were missing. One smell of select beef, seafood and exotic meats like elk, rabbit or lamb, and you’ll forget that a completely different set of gays are whooping it up just two doors down at Roxx.

Enter into the hit-or-miss squall lines of trendy-tables the welcome port of Cape Dutch. It’s fitting since the name translates loosely from Afrikaans to indicate western-coast cities like Cape Town and their early European settlers. It’s owned by South African native Justin Anthony, who also brings his native fare to Yebo, 10 Degrees South and Biltong Bar. Cape Dutch delivers the region’s braai (rhymes with guy, and it means barbecue if you speak Georgian). A raging fire becomes a centerpiece of the restaurant’s soaring ceilings and a contemporary, subliminally nautical décor. At first, Cape Dutch may be most notable for bringing Buckhead’s hip restaurant vibe to Midtown in

the former Woodfire Grill spot, but that feeling of something expected is temporary.
And the menu isn’t afraid to leave South Africa and veer into ports all over the world. Anthony’s penchant for his heritage combines with the European epicure of Belgian-born Chef Philippe Haddad, who elevates every dish to new, global heights that converted this gay dining doubter. Shaved asparagus and carrot get a lift with basil pesto. Spinach and arugula get goat cheese sorbet. Seared sea scallops appear over quinoa tabouli. At the risk of gushing, the braai turns same-old ribeye into a revelation. I also tasted my dinner companion’s fall-off-the bone braai’d lamb shank, which was only improved by a buttery cauliflower puree. Other amazingness from the braai includes a whole fish, Maine Lobster, and 30-ounce Porterhouse, each
with your choice of inspired sauces like Peri-Peri, Bernaise, and Red Wine Shallot Reduction. We didn’t stop there. The gruyere gratin was pretty standard, but butternut squash steaks, lemongrass mussels in coconut milk, and caramelized Brussels sprouts were exceptional. House-made desserts from macaroons to chocolate soup – we forced ourselves – may have permanently melted our icy hearts. The restaurant didn’t know we were reviewing, making handshakes from general manager Mitch Flowers, expediting by Haddad himself, and the best service I’ve ever experienced in Atlanta even more remarkable. Ask for Andrew’s section for menu tips, wine pairings, inspired cocktail suggestions, and even a well-placed tidbit of appropriate conversation. Quibbles go to sometimes-noisy acoustics and a steep price point. If passing out stars and dollar signs, Cape Dutch easily earns five of each. Make it your hip dining respite for special occasions, or for picky gays you want to impress.

of us is immune, this guy is actually just a flirt. His tangy, aggressive wit is an acquired taste that won’t be overwhelmed by wines with some zip. Serve him Sauvignon Blanc, Portugese Vinho Verde, or Spanish Verdejo.
Big & Bold He’s bold, but you can handle all of the tang and spice he dishes out. Like the hottest, sweetest barbecue you ever tasted, serve this guy a Malbec, Shiraz or Côtes-du-Rhône that can stand up to him blow-for-blow.
Gay stereotyping based on body hair, age or size is problematic in the real world, but these wine-typing rules actually work. Beyond red with meat and white with fish, know which wine goes with his taste, and you’ll both enjoy knowing that, like wine, none of us is good in a box.
Mr. Earthy Even faeries and granola gays like their wine. Help balance his mellow fresh herbs basil, bay leaf, rosemary with whites like Grüner Veltliner from Austria, Albariño from Spain, or Vermentino from Italy. Or give his dirtier, grittier inklings like mushrooms and truffles a red spin with Pinot Noir or Dolcetto.
Rustic Outdoorsman He likes fresh air and piney woods, but glamping is more his style than camping. Think Restoration Hardware and Land’s End instead of REI and Yeti. Match his pastoral but refined palate for pates and terrines with similarly rustic Zinfandel, Italian Nero d’Avola or Spanish Monastrell.
Global Sophisticate With destinations from the Far and Middle East and the South Pacific under his belt, this guy is spicy and brings the heat. He’ll like that you tame him with the contrasting sweetness of European Rieslings, Gewürztraminers and Vovrays. If he’s extra spicy after trips to Greece or Latin America, offer him the correspondingly heavy seasoning of a California Syrah or Greek Xinomavro.

That’s when the Georgia chapter of League at AT&T threw its annual Date for a Cause, which auctions off dates with fun people to benefit LGBT non-profits. DevenGreen.com Dear Deven: It took me a long time to grow my beard, and now it’s going out of fashion. Should I cut it off? “Bothered in Buckhead” This is not an all or nothing situation. You have choices: trim it, then cut it into chops, then a mustache, then a mouche, then bare. Or, leave as-is because it will be on-trend again. Face fashion is cyclical. Dear Deven: How can I stop my pants from creasing in my crotch area? “Crumpled in Coweta” A) Don’t wear linen. B) Don’t sit. C) Don’t wear pants. Dear Deven: I like to be comfortable, but my new boyfriend said he was embarrassed when I wore my track pants to the club. Why? “Pouting in Peachtree City” I think you meant to say your soon-to-be EX-boyfriend. Wear your gym clothes in the gym, and buy some party clothes that are comfortable to wear when you entertain or are the entertainment. If you are wearing anything athletic in a club, it better have the word “cup” associated with it. Dear Deven: I just noticed I had a wild nose hair. Why am I mortified? “Piliferous in Paulding County” Because you are usually so well groomed that you consider this a “mistake.” It’s not. It’s just “European.” If it really bothers you, consider laser treatment from a professional (as opposed to home lasers). Dear Deven: I have nothing to wear. “Stark in Stewart” Clean, repair, replace or alter what you currently have. Or go to a nudist colony and be with others who have nothing to wear. . Dear Deven: Is there anything really new in fashion? “Current in Conyers” Yes, your perception and appreciation of style and form. Dear Deven: I buy my new boyfriend clothes so he fits in, but he doesn’t seem very grateful. What should I do? “Mewling in Marietta” When you met him, did you think, “You are everything I have ever wanted to change!” Is it your job to assimilate him into society? If not, please know that new boyfriends are not new “projects.” Take him as he is (with small refinements) or send him back into the wild. Dear Deven: My husband thought he bought me a great shirt, but he doesn’t seem to know my taste at all. You know what I am going to ask... “Mendacious in Metro ” Take the shirt back because it’s “the wrong size” <wink>. Pick out something you will actually wear because the store didn’t have your size <wink>. When you wear your new shirt to a party, tell friends your hubby got it for you <wink>. A relationship based on half-truths is a whole lot of fun.
