OWNING A HOME Twenty one years ago… ... two very important things happened in my life. First, I proudly admitted who I was and I was lucky to have the support (not complete mind you) of family and friends when I came out. I was lucky. And Secondly I started my journey into real estate. I bought my first home. Again I was lucky, I had the support of a great Realtor and a great mortgage Loan Officer. And I would like to be that support for you. With 20 years of mortgage lending, investing, and Real Estate sales experience, I want to make you as lucky as I have been.

Editor’s Note Raise a hand and shout hallelujah, it’s here. Despite the weather not cooperating yet, my favorite time of year says so long to summer and hello to the season of Pride, Halloween and layers. Breathe it all in with the Goliath guys in this issue. October brings the gayest thing there is about living here, Atlanta Pride. We offer thoughts from experts to enhance your experience, including our own Deven Green’s survival guide, and I take you on a walking tour of dining near the park for when you’re ready to eat something besides festival fare. We also feature thoughts from local bigwigs on why Pride is extra meaningful in this contentious election year. And speaking of the increasingingly vitriolic election rhetoric, we can feel the whole community getting excited to cast ballots for a presidential candidate and not just against another. Of course, voting against a certain candidate may bring a bonus satisfaction this time around, but we’re grateful that we don’t have to justify our candidate by vilifying the other. Blame the potent Pride and politics combination, but we’ve been thinking lately about the gay state of things. Despite October’s big splash, Atlanta’s gay dance card is packed all year with events and a thriving community

Goliath has you covered all year and way past Pride with arts, style and gay culture. For October, that means Halloween, with a preview of the annual Jerusalem House bash, plus sure paths to great costume ideas. Between the two gayest holidays on the calendar, October inspires trendwatching all month. Deven Green’s Pride Primer

Bathroom Etiquette. Whichever gender-neutral restroom you enter and whatever you do in there, please wash your hands and clean up after yourself – just like how you conduct business in your local toilet cubicle. 2015 - The White House opened its first gender-neutral bathroom.

By Mike Fleming

Boundary Etiquette. With so much “talent” around, take a moment and pretend that everyone is there for your personal pleasure. Smile, flirt and have fun, but be mindful of physical boundaries. Just because someone is half naked doesn’t give you permission to remove the other half. 1813 - “Pride and Prejudice” the Jane Austen novel is published, sexualizing and scandalizing its audience.

ReedDavisPhotography.com

Ignore Protesters. Anti-Pride protesters do not wish to be educated or converted. They just want attention. So the best way to annoy them is to ignore them while silently judging their fashion choices. Should they come out in the future, they know they have a welcoming place.

Goliath’s own advice columnist, comic and friend-of-the-gays offers her Pride essentials as she heads to Atlanta’s signature festival

G

reat news, Pride people! Comedian Deven Green is coming. The award-winning performer you may know better from the satirical “Betty Bowers, America’s Best Christian” and “Welcome to My Home” – and who gets the last word in Goliath each month with her quippy advice column, hits Atlanta Pride this year as our guest. Deven Green has headlined, performed, and more importantly supported, Pride festivals and their communities across North America, and she’s excited to perform from the Pride main stage, meet fans in our booth and ride in the parade on October 9. “I am honored to be invited to Atlanta Pride,” says Green, whose appearances are co-sponsored with our sister publication David Atlanta. “My loud and insidious voice can educate some of the more difficult and fearful demographics. When I share my Pride experiences with them, I lessen the mystery of ‘the gays.’” So basically, Green is as much about her gays as her loyal fans are all about her. “Same sex rights and marriages don’t just happen overnight,” Green says. “It is the collective experience that defines the zeitgeist.

16  OCTOBER 2016 • V2 I8

As an active friend to the community, I do what I can…always. “The community responds endearingly, ‘That Deven always puts out!’”

1924 - The Society for Human Rights was founded. It is the first documented gay rights organization. Get Involved. There will be booths, pamphlets, speakers, samples, seminars, performers and more. Engage, be curious and learn as much as you can. Get to know the people in your gayborhood. Pride can only happen with your participation, so consider volunteering since I’m sure you have “special skills.” 1971 - The GGLF (Georgia Gay Liberation Front) organized the first gay rights march in Atlanta. You are their descendant. Be Smart. Wear sunblock and easy shoes. Drink water and use your instincts. Don’t use a condom that is too big for you: size matters.

True to form and always “on,” Green agreed to give us her unique take on Pride and Pride history before her highly anticipated arrival. These are the results.

1970 – LGBT activists Brenda Howard, Robert A. Martin (aka Donny the Punk) and L. Craig Schoonmaker popularized the idea of a day in June to commemorate Stonewall, as well as calling it “Pride” to show the opposite of shame in one’s sexual orientation.

Photo Etiquette. Take lots of photos – of Me! I will personally stop any show if someone needs a great still. Better yet, find me after I perform, and we can take a photograph together.

Dance. Have a celebratory attitude, and dance like you don’t care that everyone is watching you.

However, unless you have permission to take another person’s photo: don’t. There are many friends who are not out yet and there are plenty of sub-groups within the community that congregate only amongst themselves, so give them the respect that they deserve (said like Joan Crawford). 1970 - The first gay pride march was organized to commemorate the anniversary of the Stonewall riots with plenty of closeted camera-shy attendees.

1979 - “I Will Survive” won a Grammy for Best Disco Recording – the first and last time this category was ever offered. Reflect. If you felt shame growing up, then your Pride experience should bring the freedom to be liberated from that oppression. There is room for everyone. There is a space for you. Find your place, then plan for next year! Atlanta Pride continues as a free event to celebrate every color of the rainbow. Donate and find out more at atlantapride.org.

Party Animals By James Parker Sheffield

Get your costume ready. Jerusalem House takes gay Atlanta’s biggest must-do Halloween party to Broadway.

I

t’s that dreaded time of year. We have to come to terms with summer being over and… Nope. Who am I kidding? Fall in Atlanta is awesome, especially October. Atlanta Pride, Halloween, and dressing in layers is the magical gay trifecta. October also ushers in the beginning of the holiday season, which means welcoming back the Jerusalem House Halloween Party. This year’s theme, A Night On Broadway, brings the opportunity to dress like Cats and finally be relevant again. OK so most will go Hamilton. That’s cool too. Besides a rotating theme, an open bar, great music and cash prizes are just few of the staples that keep us coming back to this event year after year. While the party is definitely a great time, it’s also one of the premier fundraisers for a vital organization. Since 1988, Jerusalem House has grown into the largest provider of permanent supportive housing for people affected by HIV/ AIDS in Atlanta. Funds raised at the Halloween party go to furthering the mission and work of the organization. That’s right. Not only do you get to bring your Broadway “A” game, you’ll feel good about doing it. I mean, you’ll feel good dressed up as a singing feline, but you’ll feel extra good knowing you did it for a worthy cause.

18  OCTOBER 2016 • V2 I8

Look. If you aren’t excited about the revival of an Andrew Lloyd Webber classic, you don’t have to go that route. In fact, to win the party’s infamous costume contest, you don’t even have to stick to the theme. Going to a gay costume party and being off theme is beyond my personal scope of understanding, but apparently it’s a thing that people do and it’s considered acceptable allowable. “Contest winners are always original,” says Jon Santos, director of development for Jerusalem House. “They stand out for being unique, extraordinary, and self-explanatory.”

Krewes” group category includes everyone buying the 10-ticket bundle pack. Besides saving money by purchasing as a group, you also get an extra shot at prizes by coordinating costumes. Keep in mind, only those purchasing the ticket bundles get to enter the group category. Wherever you land on the costuming to dominate Instagram, this is the place to be to kick off Halloween. Veteran DJ Bill Berdeaux kicks the beat, W Atlanta Midtown offers the backdrop, and Tito’s Handmade Vodka provides the libations. Ticket prices are higher at the door, so purchase online in advance.

He also recommends being funny and never breaking character. “Those two things really stick with judges during deliberation,” he says, encouraging all partygoers to get in on the fun. “Entry into the contest is included for all guests, so everyone should take their chance to be in the spotlight.” Whatever direction you decide to go with for your costume, be on point – maybe with tips from our costume starter kit in this issue of Goliath. There’s $3000 in cash and prizes to be awarded, and the judges are looking for the best of the best. In addition to the awards for the top three individuals, a new category has been added to the mix for 2016. The “Halloween

tlanta Pride done right means different ways for different gays. Some plan their park days around the acts on stage. Others strategically position themselves for people-watching. And just about everyone will have a plan for food while out and about in Piedmont Park. Festival organizers do a pretty good job offering options on festival fare. And while you may have your must-do menu item each year – the sausage dogs are amazing, beeteedubs – it won’t take long to get your fill. And take it from us: Pacing yourself on the food can also be a perfect opportunity to temper your prolonged exposure to throngs of people. Stepping away from the park for a meal can offer the recharge you need. Luckily, there are tons of options within walking distance. You’ve already considered Flying Biscuit, Willie’s, Park Tavern, The Nook, G’s, Campagnolo, 10th & Piedmont, Henry’s, and maybe a few others. They’re all great, but on Pride Weekend, you’ll have to walk a little bit further to momentarily escape the madding crowd. These destinations make the extra steps on your FitBit worth it.

Chronicling Our Movement

Many Voices, One Heart By Matthew Holley

LGBT progress is as pressing locally during Atlanta Pride as it is nationally in the upcoming general election. This year’s convergence of Atlanta Pride with the national election creates a particularly charged climate to talk about what Pride really means. The beauty of gay culture unifies our differences, even as it highlights our individual struggles.

“Pride is the opportunity to gather, celebrate our victories and talk about the work that lies ahead. In an election year, Pride comes at a crucial time before voting registration ends and early voting begins. I hope everyone takes the opportunity to register, learn about the issues and candidates that will affect your life, and mobilize for equality!”

22  OCTOBER 2016 • V2 I8

There’s no better time to celebrate those differences and our unique spot in history. With unknown futures in the legislature and White House, four influential Atlanta voices illuminate Pride as they see it exclusively for Goliath Atlanta.

“What we are doing here is just beginning in some parts of the world. Pride events are a barometer of how far LGBT rights have progressed in other countries. It’s about being thankful and recognizing that we have more work to do to ensure our rights are maintained and our lives are valued.”

– Jeff Graham, E.D., Georgia Equality

–Ryan Roemerman, E.D., LGBT Institute at Nat’l Center for Civil & Human Rights

“Pride should be a space where all of us can come to be ourselves, and pushed to grow and continue the fights for equality and justice. Sometimes people get caught in celebrations and forget that Pride has always been a call to action. All of the voices in our community are important in protests and elections and calls for freedom.”

“Atlanta’s Pride celebration honors the diversity of our great city and the unique and special contributions of Atlanta’s LGBTQ community. It is one of my favorite events each year, because I am reminded of how far our country has come in recognizing the dignity and rights of our LGBTQ Americans.”

–Jamie Green-Ferguson, Atlanta Pride Director

– Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed

From sexy to funny to topical, these surefire themes will help put you in the running for Best Gay Halloween Costume this year.

ay men can raise Halloween costumes to an art form. Whether that’s you or not, the fun and frivolity can quickly turn to serious business when you begin thinking about dressing up without resorting to tired pirates and cops. In Atlanta, Halloween may be the biggest gay holiday second only to Pride. There are dance parties and fundraisers

I See Dead People Pay homage to 2016’s departed. With plenty of gender-bending material to work with, serve your best iteration of Prince or David Bowie. And yes, it’s too soon to add zombie makeup to their looks, you twisted bastard. No matter how hard you slay “Little Red Corvette” at parties.

24  OCTOBER 2016 • V2 I8

Pop Culture You’re good to go for the gayest versions of Suicide Squad drag, Hodor servitude, Beyonce a la Lemonade, or characters from gay favorites like Ghostbusters, Orange is the New Black or Stranger Things. What’s your current pop obsession? Make it your alter ego this year.

galore that start early and keep going through Halloween proper, so you have plenty of options to show off your efforts. Half the costume battle is coming up with the perfect idea. The best ones are smart, sexy, and of course, gay. We help you check all those boxes by offering sure-bet themes to help you create this year’s most clever conversation starters and contest winners.

Sexy That Look If you work hard for that body, chances are we couldn’t stop you from showing it off anyway, even if we tried. You know what’s up, so take any of the above ideas, put the word “Sexy” in front of it, and take off your shirt. Done and done.

Playing Politics Since you’re already pulling your hair out every time you check social media, you know it’s an election year. Gay male couples can bring a drag twist to doing the Clintons, the Obamas or the Trumps, or any number of scene-stealing characters from their circuses.

Making Headlines News is ripe with costume ideas that weren’t even on the radar last year. Put on antennas and a black t-shirt that says ‘ZIKA,’ or take inspiration from Simone Biles, Ryan Lochte, Pokemon Go, popular emojis, or a group look as the Starbucks Rainbow Drinks.

“Calls come directly to the agent by call transfer with an operator introduction,” Hough says. “This gives us a leg up on our competition, because we can schedule an appointment over the phone before most listing leads are ever noticed in another company’s agent email.” For buyers, Piedmont Sky offers highly trained agents who know the market and are backed by the on-site, native Atlantan owner with 22 years experience who is a third-generation realtor. “Buyers can be assured of the best deal for the best home available with fewer errors due to better available oversight,” Hough says. “Our agents are more knowledgeable, and they’re encouraged to continue learning through our online school and in-office classroom training.” For agents, Piedmont Sky keeps them free to assist current or future clients.

“Our franchise is based in Hapeville near Porsche and Delta headquarters with agents all over metro Atlanta, and we are looking to open our second and third locations in Vinings and East Atlanta soon for our individual franchise,” explains Chris Hough, Realtor, Qualifying Broker and Owner. Hough says the company’s mission is to diminish the red tape for buyers, sellers and agents, as well as to seamlessly transact business with other Georgia brokerages. “Strong relationships with our clients, as well as co-oping agents and brokers are essential to quality business,” he says. “Buying or selling a home can be even more frustrating if agents complicate the process.

G CONTRIBUTOR

G O LIATH

WELL HELLO.

IT’S DEVEN GREEN DEVEN GREEN is an award-winning comedy performer. You know her from the “Welcome To My Home” parodies, as the satirical Betty Bowers – America’s Best Christian, OCCmakeup ads, “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” and performing her live music shows in brothels across America. She has two cats named “Who” and “When.” DevenGreen.com Dear Deven: I tried to date people from online, but when we meet in real life, they are just a bunch of weirdos. Isn’t this a waste of time? - Bytes Be more articulate for what you need and what you are looking for in your online description. Fact-check everything you can about the other person and video chat with them before you meet them in real life. This will make your time better spent. Dear Deven: It’s all cute with my boyfriend, but I found out he is leaving nasty comments on videos and posts under another name. I’m shocked. Do I confront him? - Raw Data He is wearing a mask of anonymity online. He feels he can say anything without any consequences because it is harmless. It’s not. It is another form of bullying. He may be doing it for “fun” but there is aggression behind it. Be careful, because he is not a man who stands behind his words. Dear Deven: I have to block all my exes whenever I get a new boyfriend. I feel kind of bad, but everyone does this right? - Firewall I know you want to erase your poor choices – we all do – but be aware that they have blocked you too. Dear Deven: I’m with someone now, but is it OK to just fool around with someone else online only? - Encryption I’m pretty sure you can and already have. Dear Deven: My husband is very close to his parents. Every time he video chats with them, he always wants me to show my face. Sometimes I am just getting out of the shower. How can I stop him? - Motherboard There is no stopping him! He will always want to show you off because he is proud of what an amazing catch you are. Just holler, “Give me five minutes!” I would be pro-active though. When you hear them talking, jump into the conversation for a quick hello. Not only was this your choice, but you have fulfilled your “husbandly” duties. Dear Deven: I found my perfect match! However, I am not sexually interested in him. Will this change? - Zip drive No, honey. Either you feel it or you don’t. He is your perfect friend-match. In the long run, it’s pretty great to have an excellent conversationalist mate, which is how most long-term relationships end up; but don’t start at the ending.

Dear Deven: I’ve never dated anyone I’ve met online longer than one month. Why? - Refresh Rate

That is because you enjoy the “ice cream” phase of a relationship in which the initial mouthful tastes very thrilling, so you just keep replicating this particular scenario. When you want the “full meal deal,” the dating timeline will naturally extend. Try it. If not, go back to having your just desserts. Dear Friends: This column is for entertainment purposes...mostly mine. Send me your questions: DevenGreen@gmail.com PS: Would you like me to read this to you? Go to GoliathAtlanta.com and listen!
