Editor’s Note
Boys Night. Shake up your social calendar with group excursions for a full night or a fun way to pre-game before the bars.
Under a pensive rising moon the other night, it hit me that November seems to bring out a swarthier, darker side in Atlanta’s gay men. Maybe it’s cooler temps calling to our inner mystery, or perhaps we’re just more likely to be out and about our business in the darkness of shorter days. The post-October sigh before the holidays gives us all a chance to re-settle, and it has the Goliath guys feeling a certain freshness in this month’s issue. Channel your newfound sense of self with fall fragrances in this month’s grooming column. It’s also the season to circle back with friends, look ahead to what comes next, and maybe catch a show. That’s why we preview the touring production of Cabaret with its star, Queer As Folk’s Atlanta native Randy Harrison. We also look at options to hang with your boys at outings that are fun on their own or as bar pre-gaming, and invite you to grab a bite at one of Atlanta’s many stops in the burgeoning food truck movement.
Truck Stops. Hop onto the food truck trend with some of the city’s tastiest bites in some of the city’s most unassuming eateries.
Give & Get. It’s that time of year to start thinking about gifts. Kickstart your lists with these great ideas, and pick up a few for yourself.
As the end of the month turns your thoughts toward the holidays, enjoy ways to do a ‘Friendsgiving’ alternative to Turkey Day. And when it’s time to start making your lists and checking them twice for Black Friday and a month of giving, our gift guide is ready and waiting to spark your imagination. As always, our photographers caught your smiling faces for our Appearances pages, and we give Deven Green the last word in her advice column. Enjoy this month’s offerings, and let me know your thoughts and feedback.

G THEATER
On Stage This Month
G O LIATH
Fox Queers Up Cabaret By Matthew Holley What do you hope first timers will take away from the show? The show is harrowing and surprising and really intelligent. The finale is absolutely unforgettable. People know of it and the film, but the show is excellent at subverting audience expectations. It is a thrill and titillating, really hitting you in the gut. I think it will be especially powerful in Atlanta. How tough is a national tour versus running in one location? A tour is pretty grueling. I have been on the road for the better part of a year, moving from one hotel to the next, constantly packing and unpacking. However, it has been a wonderful way to see the country, especially during an election year.
Randy Harrison in Cabaret
Queer as Folk heartthrob Randy Harrison makes the iconic Emcee his very own when the revival of a Broadway classic hits Atlanta.
T
he illustrious Broadway musical Cabaret lands in Atlanta to light up the Fox Theatre to kick off November with a bang. In honor of its 50th anniversary season, the national tour of theTony Award-winning revival hits town. The show and its accompanying glitz and glamour runs November 1-6. As any theater queen can tell you, Cabaret is set against the backdrop of a pre-Nazi Berlin and the notorious Kit Kat Klub, home to the Emcee, single gal Sally Bowles and a boisterous loveable ensemble. Each night the eccentric performers claim the stage, enticing the crowd and encouraging everyone to leave all their worries at the door. The show features the iconic songs “Cabaret,” “Wilkommen,” and the fierce “Maybe This Time.” Kander & Ebb’s Cabaret originally opened on Broadway in 1966, in London in 1968, and on film in 1972. It was in March, 1998, that the revival with the legendary Alan Cumming and Natasha Richardson started the whole fury over again before taking its final bow on January, 2004. Ten years later, Cabaret returned with Cumming reprising his Tony-winning role as the Emcee. The likes of Michelle Williams, Emma Stone and Sienna Miller played Sally Bowles. For the 50th anniversary tour, the magnanimous-

ly talented Andrea Goss makes Sally Bowles her very own. To celebrate the show’s grand entrance to Atlanta, Goliath catches up with the production’s newest Emcee, the handsome, critically acclaimed and native Atlanta actor Randy Harrison of Wicked and Queer as Folk fame. What attracted you most to the role of the Emcee? The role is iconic for so many reasons. The show is so good, and it’s an amazing opportunity for an actor to use all of themselves in bringing the role to life, so I was excited to be a part of the production.
What’s one of your favorite things about doing the show night after night? The audience is my scene partner, and to be in a setting where the front row is so close to the stage is very rewarding for my performance and me. So many series have been revived as of late, is there any talk of a Queer as Folk reunion or revival? The fans have been discussing it for years since the show ended. And I know myself and the rest of the cast would be up for it. As of right now though, there is no official talk of a reunion or revival. What is next for you? Rest and nesting, I miss my home! I also just developed and directed a new web series that I shot last fall called New York Is Dead. And I’m just looking forward to getting back in front of the camera again.
How rigorous was the audition process? I auditioned with the song “Willkommen.” I had to do a work session with a lot of the introductory dialogue with the music and learning the steps with the choreographer, and repeat the process one more time. Therefore, the audition process wasn’t quite as rigorous as actually waiting to hear if I got the part. That took a couple of months of waiting to hear back. Did actors who came before you in the role influence making it your own? Absolutely! I am a huge admirer of all the legends who played the Emcee. Back in the day, I saw Alan [Cumming] play the role two to three times. I knew his take on the role very well, but I did watch it again: the film, YouTube videos and anyone I could in order to get ideas.

What is TRUVADA for PrEP (Pre-exposure Prophylaxis)?
uYou may be more likely to get lactic acidosis or serious liver problems
TRUVADA is a prescription medicine that can be used for PrEP to help reduce the risk of getting HIV-1 infection when used together with safer sex practices. This use is only for adults who are at high risk of getting HIV-1 through sex. This includes HIV-negative men who have sex with men and who are at high risk of getting infected with HIV-1 through sex, and malefemale sex partners when one partner has HIV-1 infection and the other does not. Ask your healthcare provider if you have questions about how to prevent getting HIV-1. Always practice safer sex and use condoms to lower the chance of sexual contact with body fluids. Never reuse or share needles or other items that have body fluids on them.
Who should not take TRUVADA for PrEP?
IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION What is the most important information I should know about TRUVADA for PrEP?
Before taking TRUVADA for PrEP to reduce your risk of getting HIV-1 infection: uYou must be HIV-negative. You must get tested to make sure that you do not already have HIV-1 infection. Do not take TRUVADA for PrEP to reduce the risk of getting HIV-1 unless you are confirmed to be HIV-negative. uMany HIV-1 tests can miss HIV-1 infection in a person who has recently become infected. If you have flu-like symptoms, you could have recently become infected with HIV-1. Tell your healthcare provider if you had a flu-like illness within the last month before starting TRUVADA for PrEP or at any time while taking TRUVADA for PrEP. Symptoms of new HIV-1 infection include tiredness, fever, joint or muscle aches, headache, sore throat, vomiting, diarrhea, rash, night sweats, and/or enlarged lymph nodes in the neck or groin. Just taking TRUVADA for PrEP may not keep you from getting HIV-1. uYou must stay HIV-negative to keep taking TRUVADA for PrEP. uTo further help reduce your risk of getting HIV-1: • Know your HIV-1 status and the HIV-1 status of your partners. • Get tested for HIV-1 at least every 3 months or when your healthcare provider tells you. • Get tested for other sexually transmitted infections. Other infections make it easier for HIV-1 to infect you. • Get information and support to help reduce risky sexual behavior. • Have fewer sex partners. • Do not miss any doses of TRUVADA. Missing doses may increase your risk of getting HIV-1 infection. • If you think you were exposed to HIV-1, tell your healthcare provider right away. uIf you do become HIV-1 positive, you need more medicine than TRUVADA alone to treat HIV-1. TRUVADA by itself is not a complete treatment for HIV-1. If you have HIV-1 and take only TRUVADA, your HIV-1 may become harder to treat over time. TRUVADA can cause serious side effects: uToo much lactic acid in your blood (lactic acidosis), which is a serious medical emergency. Symptoms of lactic acidosis include weakness or being more tired than usual, unusual muscle pain, being short of breath or fast breathing, nausea, vomiting, stomach-area pain, cold or blue hands and feet, feeling dizzy or lightheaded, and/or fast or abnormal heartbeats. uSerious liver problems. Your liver may become large and tender, and you may develop fat in your liver. Symptoms of liver problems include your skin or the white part of your eyes turns yellow, dark “tea-colored” urine, lightcolored stools, loss of appetite for several days or longer, nausea, and/or stomach-area pain.
if you are female, very overweight (obese), or have been taking TRUVADA for a long time. In some cases, these serious conditions have led to death. Call your healthcare provider right away if you have any symptoms of these conditions. uWorsening of hepatitis B (HBV) infection. If you also have HBV and take TRUVADA, your hepatitis may become worse if you stop taking TRUVADA. Do not stop taking TRUVADA without first talking to your healthcare provider. If your healthcare provider tells you to stop taking TRUVADA, they will need to watch you closely for several months to monitor your health. TRUVADA is not approved for the treatment of HBV. Do not take TRUVADA for PrEP if you already have HIV-1 infection or if you do not know your HIV-1 status. If you are HIV-1 positive, you need to take other medicines with TRUVADA to treat HIV-1. TRUVADA by itself is not a complete treatment for HIV-1. If you have HIV-1 and take only TRUVADA, your HIV-1 may become harder to treat over time. Do not take TRUVADA for PrEP if you also take lamivudine (Epivir-HBV) or adefovir (HEPSERA).
What are the other possible side effects of TRUVADA for PrEP?
Serious side effects of TRUVADA may also include: uKidney problems, including kidney failure. Your healthcare provider may do blood tests to check your kidneys before and during treatment with TRUVADA for PrEP. If you develop kidney problems, your healthcare provider may tell you to stop taking TRUVADA for PrEP. uBone problems, including bone pain or bones getting soft or thin, may lead to fractures. Your healthcare provider may do tests to check your bones. uChanges in body fat, which can happen in people taking TRUVADA or medicines like TRUVADA. Common side effects in people taking TRUVADA for PrEP are stomacharea (abdomen) pain, headache, and decreased weight. Tell your healthcare provider if you have any side effects that bother you or do not go away.

have or have had any kidney, bone, or liver problems, including hepatitis virus infection. uIf you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. It is not known if TRUVADA can harm your unborn baby. If you become pregnant while taking TRUVADA for PrEP, talk to your healthcare provider to decide if you should keep taking TRUVADA for PrEP. There is a pregnancy registry for women who take medicines to prevent HIV-1 during pregnancy. For more information about the registry and how it works, talk to your healthcare provider. uIf you are breastfeeding (nursing) or plan to breastfeed. Do not breastfeed. The medicines in TRUVADA can pass to your baby in breast milk. If you become HIV-1 positive, HIV-1 can be passed to the baby in breast milk. uAll the medicines you take, including prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements. TRUVADA may interact with other medicines. Keep a list of all your medicines and show it to your healthcare provider and pharmacist when you get a new medicine. uIf you take certain other medicines with TRUVADA for PrEP, your healthcare provider may need to check you more often or change your dose. he closest most of us got to a food truck until recent years was probably at Atlanta Pride festival. If you’re lucky, maybe there was a tamale or sweet potato pie lady at the office. But even better, there are some surebet places to hit for a new experience almost every time you go. But what is it exactly about food trucks that’s so appealing? We may actually be responding to our all-American DNA. How to Make ‘Friendsgiving’ Fabulous By Mike Fleming
Sit this Thanksgiving out from blood relatives, and start your own tradition with friends right here at home.
Best of Both Worlds You don’t have to take an “all or nothing” approach to Thanksgiving Dinner. If you don’t have time to cook a full meal, but don’t want your guests to bring anything other than themselves, order items from your favorite grocery store deli or local restaurant. It eliminates stress and time crunch, put you get the opportunity to focus on the dishes that mean the most to you. Create your ideal menu. Split the list into items you plan to purchase and those to cook. For dishes you plan on purchasing, there is no such thing as ordering too early. In fact, early ordering strengthens the chance of selecting a pick up time that works with your event schedule. As Seen on TV For those of you who stay glued to the Food Network, don’t be afraid to unleash your inner Martha Stewart. From homemade cranberry sauce to spectacular centerpieces, this is your time to shine. To make your holiday dining as fabulous as you’ve seen on television, live by one important rule: Success is in the prep. Your friends may

This time of year can challenging when it comes to decisions about where to go and who to see. Whether family relationships are strained, we don’t feel like traveling multiple times during the holiday season, or we just need a break from Aunt Linda asking when we’re going to find a husband, sometimes doing Thanksgiving with friends is the right choice. Some people call the Wednesday before or the Friday after ‘Friendsgiving,’ but we say you can make the whole long weekend your own. Regardless of your skill level in the kitchen, we’re certain you have what it takes to put on the perfect dinner party for your local gay family-of-choice, and we’ve gathered these helpful hints to get you started. Share the Load: Thanksgiving Potluck Potlucks lessen your workload and give your friends a chance to contribute. This doesn’t mean that there’s no effort on your part. As the host, take care of the main dish and nonalcoholic drinks and mixers. Whether you purchase a pre-cooked option or labor over the perfect bird, have that part handled. Hosting a potluck doesn’t mean a free-for-all menu, either. Unless you want three bowls of mashed potatoes and 14 pans of rolls, give your guests guidance on what to bring, including drinks. Don’t be afraid to request something specific, just ask with plenty of advance notice.
make fun of your lavish spreadsheet, but it’s worth the ridicule of your gay inner-circle after they splash images of your handiwork across social media. And Don’t Forget Make a master list. Map out cook times based on stove and oven space, and knock out as much chopping and measuring in advance as possible. Don’t wait until the last minute to hit the store and, for the love of all things holy, do not forget to thaw the turkey. Have a strong plan for your décor that allows you to finish it before the day-of. Trying to do it while cooking is how we burn the dressing and forget about the sweet potatoes. With proper planning, lighting candles, placing flowers, and cleaning the kitchen can all be done before guests arrive. Finally, there’s one tradition that should remain: Giving thanks. Whether pot luck, buffet style, or sitting around a dining table, remember and express to your chosen family how grateful you are for them.

G NIGHTLIFE

Get Up & Get Out
Boys Night Out By James Parker Sheffield
Gay ways for guys to find fun excursion, bar night pre-gaming, or just to shake up your social calendar. Love the Atlanta gay bar scene, but need to add something extra to complete your weekend agenda? Look no further. From arts and movies to a little friendly competition, we’ve got you covered. Here are some of our favorite excursions to liven things up a bit.
Cultural Experience
Tick all the important boxes – fun, culture and the ability to seem like the classiest versions of yourselves. Stretched out over a beautiful Midtown campus, the iconic Woodruff Arts Center is home to multiple offerings.
High Museum of Art features permanent installations and traveling collections representing a variety of mediums and genres. It typically closes at 5 p.m., but Fridays are open late for themed programming like Friday Jazz every third week of the month. Across the lawn, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra rotates shows throughout the year, and the upcoming holiday season features some their very best. ASO also hosts a quarterly LGBT Night performance. Pair a show with dinner at one of scores of other restaurants within a stone’s throw of the concert hall. woodruffcenter.org
Indy Movie Night
Tis the season for Oscar releases, and to wow your friends with your winning picks, remove “I’ve never heard of that” from your cinema vocabulary at one of Atlanta’s three great art houses. Nestled in Midtown Promenade, Midtown Art Cinema offers independent flicks as well as blockbusters. They also support community events like Out On Film, plus we love their friendly staff and the bounty of post-show dinner and drink options surrounding the place. landmarktheatres.com Up the street, Plaza Theatre shows off its quirky personality with new features and throwbacks. Best known for their Rocky Horror presentations, it’s a laid back – dare we say hipster? – environment that’s welcoming to all comers. plazaatlanta.com Over on Cheshire Bridge, Regal Tara Theater remains a constant fixture even as the urban landscape around it changes. If you’re looking for the breakout film that isn’t being screened at mainstream theaters, this location is definitely for you. regmovies.com/theatres
Get Competitive
Looking to challenge your crew with something more interactive? We’ve got you covered. Top Golf has taken Atlanta by storm, and we can’t get enough. With full bar and dinner service, making a night of fun and games is a no-brainer. The concept is simple: challenge your friends to point-driven golf games for a low hourly rate, all while kicking back your favorite cocktails in a climate controlled environment. It’s basically the sporting outlet we’ve longed for without knowing we were longing for it. topgolf.com If you’re gay in Atlanta, you’ve probably done Midtown Bowl. If not, we demand an immediate course correction. This isn’t your grandpa’s bowling alley, guys. From drag queens to gay birthday parties, we’ve seen it all at this place. With their late night hours, you and your boys can even hit the lanes after you’ve finished at the bars. midtownbowl.com

G O LIATH
WELL HELLO.
IT’S DEVEN GREEN DEVEN GREEN is an award-winning comedy performer. You know her from the “Welcome To My Home” parodies, as the satirical Betty Bowers – America’s Best Christian, OCCmakeup ads, “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” and performing her live music shows in brothels across America. She has two cats named “Who” and “When.” DevenGreen.com Dear Deven: I’m aging and not happy about it. – “Dorian Gray” Then grow old youthfully. Dear Deven: Why did I have such a hard time when I was younger with relationships and stuff? – “Hansel” Because you allowed others the luxury of poor behavior. As we get older, we have less tolerance for “stuff” that doesn’t fulfill us. Dear Deven: My folks are getting older. How do I apologize to them? I put them through a lot. – “Charlie” Just say the words in any way, shape or form. You know, they put their parents through a lot, too. I admire you for needing to resolve this in your family. You are doing the right thing. Dear Deven: I get tired quicker, can’t drink as much, have to watch what I eat and can’t stay out all night. What is a good activity for me? – “Tremayne” Sleeping. Dear Deven: I suffer from baldness. – “Elmer” Figure out how to give others pleasure from it. Dear Deven: I’m getting more negative the older I get. I hate being like this. – “Waldorf” I consider defeating thoughts an indulgent luxury. The positive energy that you carry with you is infectious. The more clarity you have in finding one nice thing will transfer to others. When you change your attitude, you will no longer use the word hate. Dear Deven: I’m mad at myself because I keep forgetting where I left my phone. This is happening more often the older I get. Help! – “Rumpelstiltskin” But you know you are forgetting it, so at least you are aware that you are forgetful! Keep your mind active by being curious enough to explore new experiences. This kind of learning will keep your mind high and tight. Dear Deven: I want a tattoo. Is it too late? – “Popeye” I think they close at 9p.m. No, it’s not too late. Careful about spur-of-themoment ink though. You have lasted this long without one, so I suggest you create a temporary one first. If you still love it and want it after a month, then go for it.

Dear Deven: I’m afraid of my next act in life because I don’t know what it is. – “Merlin”
