EDITOR’S NOTE Like I always say, if you’re hosting out-of-town guests, Atlanta is always a great place to visit. If you want them to become permanent residents, invite them to come in April. Atlanta is a gorgeous place to live all year long, but it’s downright magical this time of year. The City in the Forest turns not just green for spring but busts out in white, yellow and pink blooms in almost every direction. You can’t help but pick up the vibe of renewal and run with it. So we did. Our celebration of the April awakening in Atlanta starts with a gorgeous photo spread by contributing photographer Gastohn Barrios. He turns his eye toward outdoor workouts in sexy gear by Modus Vivendi that shows off that winter work you did to stay fit. The month in activities kicks off with one of the hottest tickets of 2017: the inaugural tour of Broadway’s smash hit Hedwig & the Angry Inch. We speak to one of its stars about the show’s legacy of love and a message of acceptance that rings profoundly in today’s political climate. April also brings some signature gay Atlanta events like the HRC Atlanta Gala & Silent Auction, as well as Atlanta Symphony Orchestra’s LGBT Night. This month’s Man About Town walks you through plans for the big dinner, and the ASO entices you out with a classical concert and an exclusive after-party.

Both events beg the question: What to wear? Goliath dresses you up for HRC by knowing the rules and when to break them when it comes to Black Tie Optional, and we’re just as excited to show you how to nail the Cocktail Attire dress code at the symphony without being bored or boring. All this hitting the town wouldn’t be complete without places to eat before and after the fun. One of our feature stories this month walks you through more than a dozen great spots for spring dining, whether you are in for relaxing on a patio, decompressing with elevated pub fare, or gathering your gays for a group experience. Even as you take advantage of all that Atlanta offers, it’s also time to start planning your 2017 adventure away from home. Dream big with our annual Tour de Men travel guide, which introduces you to six exciting global destinations by way of the new boyfriend you might meet on each journey. As always, we close with Hello from Deven Green, and our Appearances pages shine with your smiles. With so much to do, the Goliath lens will be looking for you again this month. Say cheese, introduce us to your friends, and drop me a note any time with your feedback. Mike Fleming Editorial Director Mike@GoliathAtlanta.com

What is TRUVADA for PrEP (Pre-exposure Prophylaxis)?

u You may be more likely to get lactic acidosis or serious liver

TRUVADA is a prescription medicine that can be used for PrEP to help reduce the risk of getting HIV-1 infection when used together with safer sex practices. This use is only for adults who are at high risk of getting HIV-1 through sex. This includes HIV-negative men who have sex with men and who are at high risk of getting infected with HIV-1 through sex, and male-female sex partners when one partner has HIV-1 infection and the other does not. Ask your healthcare provider if you have questions about how to prevent getting HIV-1. Always practice safer sex and use condoms to lower the chance of sexual contact with body fluids. Never reuse or share needles or other items that have body fluids on them.

Who should not take TRUVADA for PrEP?

IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION What is the most important information I should know about TRUVADA for PrEP? Before taking TRUVADA for PrEP to reduce your risk of getting HIV-1 infection: u You must be HIV-negative. You must get tested to make sure that you do not already have HIV-1 infection. Do not take TRUVADA for PrEP to reduce the risk of getting HIV-1 unless you are confirmed to be HIV-negative. u Many HIV-1 tests can miss HIV-1 infection in a person who has recently become infected. If you have flu-like symptoms, you could have recently become infected with HIV-1. Tell your healthcare provider if you had a flu-like illness within the last month before starting TRUVADA for PrEP or at any time while taking TRUVADA for PrEP. Symptoms of new HIV-1 infection include tiredness, fever, joint or muscle aches, headache, sore throat, vomiting, diarrhea, rash, night sweats, and/or enlarged lymph nodes in the neck or groin. While taking TRUVADA for PrEP to reduce your risk of getting HIV-1 infection: u You must continue using safer sex practices. Just taking TRUVADA for PrEP may not keep you from getting HIV-1. u You must stay HIV-negative to keep taking TRUVADA for PrEP. u To further help reduce your risk of getting HIV-1: • Know your HIV-1 status and the HIV-1 status of your partners. • Get tested for HIV-1 at least every 3 months or when your healthcare provider tells you. • Get tested for other sexually transmitted infections. Other infections make it easier for HIV-1 to infect you. • Get information and support to help reduce risky sexual behavior. • Have fewer sex partners. • Do not miss any doses of TRUVADA. Missing doses may increase your risk of getting HIV-1 infection. • If you think you were exposed to HIV-1, tell your healthcare provider right away. u If you do become HIV-1 positive, you need more medicine than TRUVADA alone to treat HIV-1. TRUVADA by itself is not a complete treatment for HIV-1. If you have HIV-1 and take only TRUVADA, your HIV-1 may become harder to treat over time. TRUVADA can cause serious side effects: u Too much lactic acid in your blood (lactic acidosis), which is a serious medical emergency. Symptoms of lactic acidosis include weakness or being more tired than usual, unusual muscle pain, being short of breath or fast breathing, nausea, vomiting, stomach-area pain, cold or blue hands and feet, feeling dizzy or lightheaded, and/or fast or abnormal heartbeats. uSerious liver problems. Your liver may become large and tender, and you may develop fat in your liver. Symptoms of liver problems include your skin or the white part of your eyes turns yellow, dark “tea-colored” urine, light-colored stools, loss of appetite for several days or longer, nausea, and/or stomach-area pain.

problems if you are female, very overweight (obese), or have been taking TRUVADA for a long time. In some cases, these serious conditions have led to death. Call your healthcare provider right away if you have any symptoms of these conditions. u Worsening of hepatitis B (HBV) infection. If you also have HBV and take TRUVADA, your hepatitis may become worse if you stop taking TRUVADA. Do not stop taking TRUVADA without first talking to your healthcare provider. If your healthcare provider tells you to stop taking TRUVADA, they will need to watch you closely for several months to monitor your health. TRUVADA is not approved for the treatment of HBV. Do not take TRUVADA for PrEP if you already have HIV-1 infection or if you do not know your HIV-1 status. If you are HIV-1 positive, you need to take other medicines with TRUVADA to treat HIV-1. TRUVADA by itself is not a complete treatment for HIV-1. If you have HIV-1 and take only TRUVADA, your HIV-1 may become harder to treat over time. Do not take TRUVADA for PrEP if you also take lamivudine (Epivir-HBV) or adefovir (HEPSERA).

What are the other possible side effects of TRUVADA for PrEP?

Serious side effects of TRUVADA may also include: u Kidney problems, including kidney failure. Your healthcare provider may do blood tests to check your kidneys before and during treatment with TRUVADA for PrEP. If you develop kidney problems, your healthcare provider may tell you to stop taking TRUVADA for PrEP. u Bone problems, including bone pain or bones getting soft or thin, may lead to fractures. Your healthcare provider may do tests to check your bones. u Changes in body fat, which can happen in people taking TRUVADA or medicines like TRUVADA. Common side effects in people taking TRUVADA for PrEP are stomacharea (abdomen) pain, headache, and decreased weight. Tell your healthcare provider if you have any side effects that bother you or do not go away.

What should I tell my healthcare provider before taking TRUVADA for PrEP?

u All your health problems. Be sure to tell your healthcare provider if you

have or have had any kidney, bone, or liver problems, including hepatitis virus infection. u If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. It is not known if TRUVADA can harm your unborn baby. If you become pregnant while taking TRUVADA for PrEP, talk to your healthcare provider to decide if you should keep taking TRUVADA for PrEP. Pregnancy Registry: A pregnancy registry collects information about your health and the health of your baby. There is a pregnancy registry for women who take medicines to prevent HIV-1 during pregnancy. For more information about the registry and how it works, talk to your healthcare provider. u If you are breastfeeding (nursing) or plan to breastfeed. Do not breastfeed. The medicines in TRUVADA can pass to your baby in breast milk. If you become HIV-1 positive, HIV-1 can be passed to the baby in breast milk. u All the medicines you take, including prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements. TRUVADA may interact with other medicines. Keep a list of all your medicines and show it to your healthcare provider and pharmacist when you get a new medicine. u If you take certain other medicines with TRUVADA for PrEP, your healthcare provider may need to check you more often or change your dose. These medicines include ledipasvir with sofosbuvir (HARVONI). You are encouraged to report negative side effects of prescription drugs to the FDA. Visit www.FDA.gov/medwatch, or call 1-800-FDA-1088.

tlanta’s gay men play an integral part in our rich corporate and philanthropic culture. From public relations strategy to the planning of this month’s HRC Atlanta Dinner and Silent Auction, 26-year-old Andrew Moon is in on all of those aspects of the city and more. Originally from Commerce, Georgia, with a degree from UGA, Moon has been in Atlanta for five years now in a public relations firm that keeps him busy morning to night. We chatted with him about the 30th HRC Gala Dinner & Silent Auction coming on April 22, life in the big city, and what it means to give back to worthy causes. Tell us about your day job. I’m a Strategist with Edelman Atlanta’s digital group. I look across an organization’s target audiences and help identify which marketing channels are most appropriate. It’s challenging, but such an amazing opportunity to work with brilliant people around the world.

ALL TUXED IN Part of the fun of the HRC Atlanta Dinner on April 22 is getting all dolled up, but it can be stressful. Nowhere does it say you must look and flock like penguins, and yet no one wants to be that guy wearing more “statement” than “statement piece.” Here’s knowing the rules and when to break them when rocking a tuxedo or other Black-Tie-Optional attire.

What associations do you have outside work? Edelman recognizes that business and purpose can – and should – live together. This gives me flexibility to support non-profits around town like CHRIS 180 and Georgia Center for Non-Profits. I also serve on the Human Rights Campaign Atlanta Steering Committee.

What makes this year’s HRC Gala special? I think most in our community are looking for a silver lining in today’s chaos. I actually started to feel a bit hopeless, but a quote from Meryl Streep, who was recently honored at the HRC New York Gala, put it well: “Because he will have woken us up to how fragile freedom really is.” Following marriage equality, people lost sight of other important battles – to end workplace discrimination, achieve fair housing and ensure transgender equality. Our event helps advance these battles on a local national and global scale.

What do you do for fun? I’m an a cappella nerd. I started in the UGA Accidentals, and we competed in the International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella, the same competition featured in the movie Pitch Perfect. Since moving to Atlanta, I’ve sung with a few groups such as The Graduates.

Be as bold as your personality allows.

Wear every statement piece you own. Less is more.

Worry about opting instead for a long necktie in a high formal sheen.

If you could change one thing about gay Atlanta, what would it be? I never felt more connected to our community than in the aftermath of the Pulse shooting. In the face of incredible tragedy, people from all walks of life stood in solidarity to celebrate the lives lost and begin the healing process together. If I’d change anything, it would be to have our community realize that we have an immense opportunity to drive change when we unify – not just in times of crisis – around a common cause. If you were to die tomorrow, what would you want your legacy to be? That I left things in a better place than I found them.

By Buck C. Cooke Are you ready for some culture? No, not the music without words that is pots-and-pans house music. This is Classical, honey, and it’s going to be extra gay on April 27. Consider this your official invitation to the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra’s next LGBT Night.

Neon says attendees, of course, should expect music at the reception that’s far from the selections the symphony performs that night. “Most people want to hear something different after hearing one kind of music for a period of time,” he says. “There will be some classic dance tracks, not classical music, that I’ve wanted to play for some time but haven’t yet because my sets tend to be high energy. I will hopefully use those during the reception because they’re fun tracks.”

The ASO’s quarterly theme nights started four years ago and are “a time for us to come together as a community to enjoy the fine arts and give patrons a chance to meet some of the musicians who are a part of the ASO,” says Christopher Stephens, ASO Corporate Sales Manager and proud gay Atlantan. “There is a diversity of LGBT Nights are just a part of the ASO’s “roattendees who come, so LGBT Nights are a great bust” commitment to the LGBT community in way to meet new people who enjoy the arts.” Atlanta, Stephens says. “The ASO is a member of the Atlanta Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce and regularly donates items to LGBT organizations for fundraisers, like the Human Rights Campaign silent auction at the upcoming Atlanta dinner,” he says. “The environment at the ASO is very in“Whether you are a long-time supporter or a clusive, and they support my work with organifirst-timer, these programs are very accessible,” zations like GLAAD and HRC.” Stephens assures. “Make sure and use the code ‘PROUD’ when Tickets include the symphony performance purchasing tickets for April 27 in order to reand post-concert reception where LGBT Night ceive information related to programming for attendees mix and mingle with ASO musicians the LGBT Night,” Stephens adds. while enjoying drinks, light bites, and beats by Neon the Glowgobear. The April performance features guest conductor Vasily Petrenko leading “Piano Concerto No. 1” by Mendelssohn, “Don Juan” by Strauss, and “Symphony No. 8” by Dvořák. The ASO is also joined by Argentinian pianist Ingrid Fliter.

When it’s a show that was a legend even before a Broadway run that rivals most any other rock musicals, gay Atlanta stands up and cheers. Hedwig and the Angry Inch brings that magic to Atlanta in a limited run on April 4-5 at the Fox Theatre. For those still uninitiated to Hedwig’s story after an off-Broadway cult hit, movie musical and smash run on the Great White Way in 2014-2015, Atlanta is in for a mind-bending trip of gender confirmation, story telling and good old rock and roll. The Broadway run included actors in the lead including Neil Patrick Harris and Darren Criss. In short, Hedwig is a thumping musical about a rock and roll band fronted by transgender East German singer, Hedwig Robinson. The show follows the band on a B-grade American tour chasing Hedwig’s ex, a sexy and uber-successful rock god who stole Hedwig’s fame – and heart. The production is based on the original show written by and starring Joh Cameron Mitchell. On tour, Euan Morton plays the title role. Throughout the story, Hedwig is assisted, yet also annoyed, by her back-up singer, guitarist and husband, Yitzhak. Leading lady Hannah Corneau, who plays Yitzhak with heart and humor, sat down with Goliath Atlanta to shed light on touring with the blockbuster. Corneau reflects on her experience with the tour and the longterm importance of Hedwig, especially during a volatile time for trans issues in our country. What’s it like to tour behind such a phenomenal smash hit? It has been one of the biggest honors of my life thus far. To be a part of the Hedwig legacy is a dream come true. To be able to tell this poignant story and spread these special messages is a responsibility that I feel so very lucky to have taken on.

30 APRIL 2017 • v3 i3

Were you nervous stepping into such an iconic role? They were certainly big shoes to fill, but I felt so inspired and lucky to be able to step into his shoes. What an opportunity for me as an actress, but more importantly a human. The piece is such an exciting one to be a part of. What preparations did you undergo for the role? Initially, I really had to focus on the physicality and vocal range of the role. To make this man believable, vulnerable and extremely dynamic, I had to dig deep within myself to formulate this character within my mind and body. Why do you think people are drawn to the show? People go to the theater in hopes of resonating with characters. Hedwig gives them that opportunity and experience. You see these rich characters and you go on their emotional journey that I think the audience finds is not so different than their own. Everyone has experienced love, loss, regret and self-discovery. That is being human and that is what Hedwig is all about. What do you hope the audience takes away from the show? Self-exploration, love, understanding and acceptance is the key to life. It’s literally about life, legacy and love. What are you most looking forward to about performing in Atlanta? I performed at the Alliance Theater in 2014, and I love the spirit of Atlanta. Such warm people, a beautiful city and cultured minds. You’re going to eat it up! Hedwig and the Angry Inch stages Tuesday, April 4 and Wednesday, April 5 at Fox Theatre. foxtheatre.org.

By James Parker Sheffield With great weather comes great social-calendar responsibility. Gay Atlantans hit the streets in search of the perfect spot to soak up the sun, kick back cocktails, and enjoy the best in playful seasonal menus. In that spirit, the following pages deliver a season’s worth of eateries to try or rediscover, whether you’re looking to laze away a few hours on a patio, gather your gay gaggle for a group meal, or upgrade your casual pub experience with elevated fare.

PERFECT PATIOS Discover offbeat patio places with Atlanta’s best alfresco dining Patio and park culture reigns supreme this season, but not all outdoor dining adventures are created equal. Here are some of the best places in the city to breathe in spring, while indulging your biggest cravings.

BELTLINE BOYS You had us at “Jack & Coke Slushie.” The menu and atmosphere at Victory Sandwich Bar are everything our guys need on a warm, sunny weekend. Between the high-quality affordable eats, playful drink list, and buzzing patio, the Inman Park location of this local favorite even makes it easy to grab carry-out for a hike around the Beltline. sandwiches, chips, sodas, side item, and some Victory swag. 913 Bernina Ave. NE 404.963.1742 vicsandwich.com

SMALL PACKAGES Le Petit Marché, or “The Little Market,” is a tiny powerhouse in the Kirkwood neighborhood, featuring an array of freshly prepared menu items and market-made pantry selections to take home. This gem serves breakfast all day, plus savory selections for lunch. The patio’s stature is true to the “Petit” name and stands as a great reminder that size isn’t everything every time. Cozy up in this quaint spot for a nice cross breeze and a colorful Ahi Salad. 1984 Hosea L. Williams Drive 404.317.9888 lepetitmarche.net

BRUNCH BEFORE BLOOMS Less than a mile from Atlanta Botanical Gardens, The Lawrence is a great place to start an out-and-about day. They offer brunch, lunch, and dinner services on one of the hippest patios in the area, each with its own menu. If you have more adventurous eaters along for the ride, the menu regularly features a variety of game meats that you won’t easily find in other restaurants. 905 Juniper Street Reservations Recommended for groups: 404.961.7177 thelawrenceatlanta.com

OUTDOOR UPGRADE When you need a patio but are in the mood for a more refined dinner option, look no further than King + Duke’s. The outdoor seating here checks all your boxes, from décor and lighting to food and service. The 24-foot open hearth delivers flavors you won’t find anywhere else in the city. Expect the highest quality in hearth-prepared meats and locally sourced produce, as well as unique craft cocktails. King + Duke promises to impress with a truly unique Atlanta experience. 3060 Peachtree Road NW Reservations Recommended: 404.477.3500 kinganddukeatl.com

PUB FARE, ELEVATED Ditch typical bar food and check out the surprisingly gourmet bites at these public houses.

When the sun is taunting you from the office window, and Friday can’t get here quickly enough, nothing caps off the work week like great beer options and a great scene. And if you’re chasing the best of the best when it comes to drinks, plenty of Atlanta places make sure that you don’t have to settle in the food department, either. What’s more? The onset of spring means the release of new and seasonal brews. Our selections offer more than your standard bar eats to go with it.

STOP & STAY In keeping with its East Atlanta Village home, Midway Pub offers a casual vibe that lends itself to staying longer than you intended, and you won’t mind a bit. Drop in for a post-work beer, and happily find yourself knee-deep in small-batch brews and delicious foods hours later. Gourmet takes on comfort foods like gumbo and corn dogs are treats that your trainer will definitely yell at you about. So worth it. Our only advice: Try everything. Twice. 552 Flat Shoals Ave. SE 404.584.0335 themidwaypub.com

HOMEMADE BREWS The stone walls and dark wood at Wrecking Bar Brewpub create an old-world feel, while their menu offers an indulgent spin on classic fare as well as a full selection of house-brewed beers. Venture below ground in this ante-bellum mansion for an expansive selection of food and drinks inspired by the Old South. Try the mac-n-cheese with crispy pig ears, and one (or more) of their beer flights.

You’ll thank us later. 292 Moreland Ave NE 404.221.2600 wreckingbarbrewpub.com

EUROPEAN EXCURSION Brick Store Pub whisks you all the way to Europe, where the food has always been as much a draw as the draft. What’s better is that all of it is reasonably priced and easy to share with the table. And while the main dining room is always on point, the Belgian Bar tucked away upstairs is a definite must, with full kitchen service available in a small, cozy space with tons of ambiance. After a couple high-gravity brews, try the warm salted pretzels and sausage plate so good you may actually believe you’re in Europe. 125 E. Court Square, Decatur 404.687.0990 brickstorepub.com

RELAXED, REFINED Nestled in walking distance from Colony Square and Woodruff Arts Center, TAP is ideal for pre- or post-culture bites. This upscale gastropub features a lighter touch and more fresh veggies than traditional bar spots. Along side bacon-topped tots and wings, you’ll also find spectacular entrée salads perfect for spring. 1180 Peachtree Str. NE Reservations Recommended: 404.347.2220 tapat1180.com

Your Porteno, as Buenos Aires residents call themselves, can be self-assured but insecure at the same time,a eager to please you with his mix of European and South American roots in the city, the wine and the people. The gorgeous architecture is similarly diverse in gay neighborhoods like Recoleta, Palermo, and San Telmo. One minute, it’s like a contemporary American scene, the next you’re in Old Paris. Then you notice that signature Portenos behavior – insane driving, the passionate way he moves his hands when he speaks, and the obsession he has with close family and friends. Gay life has been part of the fabric of the city since the formation of its first openly gay group in 1969. It’s likely the most liberal and pro-gay city in Latin America. Since 1996, anti-gay discrimination is illegal, but follow your man’s lead on behaviors in certain areas. Marriage equality is the law of the land as of 2010. Porteños men kiss on the cheek to greet each other, both gay and straight. Enjoy that, and ask to visit Glam Club for dancing, Sitges for drag, Flux for happy hour, and Pride Café or Parilla Miranda for dinner and drinks.

TOKYO,

Like the urban jungle he lives in, your date in Tokyo is a mass of contradictions and dichotomies. It’s the reality of this emerging modern culture in a strictly conservative country that he’s likely buttoned up and closeted at a desk by day and letting it all hang out in the city’s vibrant bar culture by night. In a blink, he can take you from the chaos of crowds, skyscrapers and neon billboards to the serenity of tree-lined streets, sakura blossoms and secluded udon shops for noodles. And though many westerners don’t realize it, there is amazing skiing on the peaks of Mount Takeo, only 30 miles away. You’ll want to soak up all of it. Two neighborhoods play host to the gay scene. Shinjuku is the better known and most crowded, and Ni-Chome is known for having the highest concentration of small, densely packed gay bars in the world. Eat at the Aiiro Café, which has locations in both neighborhoods. Other restaurants in the gay districts include Ippudo for ramen, Yuian for Isakaya, and Cocolo for Japanese-Western fusion. Most gay Japanese men are still limited to express their sexual orientation within the confines of these few small blocks. They love visitors, and many of the bars have eager bartenders who speak fluent English. Ask to visit clubs including Dragon Men, Arty Farty, GB and Kinsmen. Ni-Chome is also great for boutiques and shops, and Shinjuku hosts stores for major men’s fashion brands like Comme des Garcons, which is now based there.

WALKABOUT

You’ve heard that it’s the journey, not the destination. Well, in South Australia, it’s both. Like the planes, trains and automobiles you’ll take to get here, your gay guide has to know the big city, but also be rugged enough to know his way around the Outback as well. Win-win. Start in Melbourne, which may be smaller than Sydney but is the country’s cultural capital. Your guy here knows his way around cafes, art galleries and a welcoming, multicultural atmosphere. Gay neighborhoods here are Fitzroy, St. Kilda and Carlton, and you’ll want to see them all. Drink at Sircuit Bar, Chasers and The Peel. Eat at Chin Chin or the Flower Drum for Asian flair, and Ten Lost Tribes for tapas and coffee. Stay at The Laird or 169 Drummond exclusively for gay clientele, and visit the gay Sandridge Beach. Once you’ve soaked up all the gay you can handle, the real adventure begins. While it’s not gay per se, the Australian Outback with your cute-accented man will be the adventure of a lifetime. Travel from Melbourne to the port town of Adelaide, then catch a ride to the even more remote Alice Springs, where guided walkabouts are the local industry of choice.

The guy you meet here, like his home, is split between his Dutch and French sensibilities. Pack your passport to get on this island, and then let him take you on a whirlwind romance of dramatic cliffs, winding roads and hilly sunsets.

Closed in by cliffs, the gay Cupecoy Beach on the Dutch side of the island is clothing optional. It’s in a super fancy area with a thriving condo market, the world-class Blue Mall luxury shopping center and the Christian Dior Spa. On the French side, do dinner and drag at L’Escargot with amazing French cuisine in a dive-tastic Creole cottage that includes a cabaret seven nights a week. The Gay & Lesbian Travel Association has checked out and approved accommodations at Sonesta and Westin Dawn Beach on the Dutch side, but most gay tourists go French at La Samanna. It regularly hosts famous faces like Anderson Cooper and Donatella Versace. That’s where you and your local lad can enjoy tennis, spa, a full gym and VIP cabanas. Ask him to take a daytrip to Saba, the sister island vying for gayest of the region with an openly gay commissioner, director of tourism, and member of the island council, all of whom are pushing for marriage equality.

The natural beauty, the Old World charm, the liberal sophistication. Oh, and the city too. The boyfriend you find in Geneva is everything that this city has to offer in one perfect package. One of the most live-and-let-live places on the planet, prepare to fall in love. Oh, and the guys too. Geneva is nestled between the majestic Alps and the Jura Mountains. Considered the most “French” of the Swiss destinations, it’s smaller than its sister Zurich but more multicultural.

You’ll stroll hand-in-hand through the International Quarter near the main train station, set to whisk you away to day trips and other European destinations. Once there, you and your handsome tour guide can easily walk to most places within the city, rent bicycles, or book boat and ferry tours of the area. The Pont du Mont Blanc has been a gay meeting place for generations. There’s a pebbly beach, pedestrian and café-lined streets, and a cruisy park at the land’s end point. Eat at Buvette des Bains des Paquis, a gay restaurant with waterside seating. Gay clubs are plentiful. Favorites include L’Aiglon, which is a café by day and bar by night, La Garconniere for drag, Le Declic for lounging, and La Bretelle for the artsy crowd. Geneva also has a reputation for a large number of gay spas, saunas and baths. Shopping includes the superstore Manor and Substation, a gay adult store.

One of the most gay-welcoming cities in the world introduces you to an urbane, educated, most-likely well-off man who knows the ins and outs of his ocean-wrapped, snow-capped city. Start in one of two distinctly different gayborhoods. The West End and Commercial Drive are both home to gay residents and a number of gay restaurants, boutiques, pubs and coffee shops. The West End is on the downtown peninsula with tree-lined streets, beaches and funky stores. “The Drive” is more multi-cultural and bohemian. It’s a little more lesbian-centric and holds its own Pride festival each year. Weddings are always in season, with unforgettable views and venues like the Teahouse in Stanley Park or Windows on the Bay. There are more than 30 “TAG Approved” gay-friendly hotels in Vancouver, the most of any city in Canada. Some of the more popular and more unique offerings include the trendy 2400 Motel, the out of this world views of Coast Coal Harbor, the ocean-side Pinnacle Hotel at the Pier, and the quaint intimacy of The Burrard. For something different, dine out at eateries like The Parker for vegetarian fare, The Observatory Restaurant for mountain views, and Dinner at the Birdcage or Vancouver Fan Club for drag dining. What’s your idea of the perfect day date? Your Vancouver man is ready with a scenic trip on a floatplane, an epic road trip up into the mountains, or a relaxing ferry ride through stunning vistas like Victoria Island on the Strait of Georgia.

DEAR DEVEN: I was told, “never work for free.” Do you believe that? - “Sovereign”

NO. If you need to prove yourself and subsequent jobs are paying then offer one “complimentary” job. If you feel the credit or association by doing a free job is worth it, then do it. If you are always giving it away then it is just a hobby. Value yourself.

DEAR DEVEN: I’m self-employed and feel obligated to say YES to everything so I don’t miss out on an opportunity? Is that right? - “Scratch”

NO. If you are clear on who you are and what you do then it makes no sense to say YES to offers which have no meaning to you or you aren’t passionate about. As a goodwill gesture pass the offers you say NO to on to someone else who may say YES. You know, like your leftovers!

DEAR DEVEN: I am successful in my field (finance) but I don’t love what I do...I think I am supposed to right? - “Bank”

NO. Just because you are talented in a field doesn’t mean you have a passion for it. It’s either what you do or who you are.

DEAR DEVEN: Do I have to spend money to make money? - “Capital”

NO! Although you can pay me a consultation fee!

DEAR DEVEN: There are so many people in the interior decoration field that I don’t know where I belong. It was suggested that I find another field.? If the market is super saturated, should try something else? - “Loot”

NO! Find your niche and angle in your chosen field! Remember that every single person thinks that at some point in every single field. Yes there are challenges and competition so your real job is to create where you belong.

DEAR DEVEN: I gave myself a one-year time limit for my business to start making money. It’s two years and I’m breaking even. Time to quit? - “Tender”

NO. It’s time to put your time in. Keep at it. I want you to succeed and a big part of that is showing up bright-eyed and bushy-tailed. It’s not how long you have been at it, it is how committed you are to what you started.

DEAR DEVEN: Are millennials taking up all the good jobs since the market is always youth oriented? - “Bones”

NO! There will always be openings for those with talent, experience, and maturity.

DEAR DEVEN: You always seem to have all the answers don’t you?! - “Grand”

YES I do!

DEAR FRIENDS: This column is for entertainment purposes...mostly mine. Send me your viable questions: DevenGreen@gmail.com PS: Would you like me to read this to you? Go to GoliathAtlanta.com and listen!
