EDITOR’S NOTE

ven though we are entering the final month of summer, there is still plenty of sizzle to be had this season before we switch gears for fall. We have once again collaborated with the incredible Mr Turk whose pattern-playful and color-conscious collection graces the cover and gives you a nice preview of a pre-fall color palette and silhouette. Keeping in the fashion grove, Martel Sharpe gives you a review of the acclaimed ‘McQueen’ documentary showing now. Written and directed by Ian Bonhôte and Peter Ettedgui, it paints an accurate and respectful picture of the ingenious designer including his incredible creative process and mental struggles.
We also give you a review of the current Rodin exhibit at the British Museum in London. The exhibition is a first-time showing of over 80 pieces of his work alongside the Parthenon sculptures that served as a profound influence and inspiration to the artist. And as usual, our comedic muse and chanteuse, Deven Green, eloquently closes out the issue by offering her salty experience, not her savory advice, to solve your problems. ight years ago, the world lost one of its most talented fashion designers, Alexander McQueen. Renowned for his artistic vision, which reached beyond mere physical aesthetics, the British designer committed suicide at 40 years old. Though his legacy lives on through his fashion label and loved ones, the new documentary “McQueen” hopes to give a uniquely intimate look into McQueen’s life and journey. Written and directed by Ian Bonhôte and Peter Ettedgui, “McQueen,” aims to paint a clear picture of the designer’s life through a combination of mediums that contain his imprint. Through original home videos, archived videos, past interviews, and testimonies from family members and friends his personal and professional lives are revealed; even if both were the same at times. Some of his loved ones who were featured include his sister Janet, nephew Gary, and former boyfriend and assistant Andrew Groves. In this documentary, discussing the relationships and bonds that McQueen formed with others in his inner circle was just as important, if not more, as talking about the man himself. For one, it’s easier to have someone with first-hand experience recalling his emotions and struggles rather than a fashion expert or historian who didn’t know him personally. Also, it’s clear that each person carries a piece of McQueen with them wherever they go, and it has been that way for a long time. Bringing them all onboard a project like this is the next best thing to having him present because in
some ways they are him. The majority of his loved ones worked with him at some point. It started with his family, and one by one his friends were brought into the fold. In the beginning, they all basically worked for free, however, after his appointment as the Creative Director of Givenchy all of his friends moved with him to Paris; where they worked and lived together under one roof. Their own testimonies show how devoted they were to his vision, and, in return, they were treated like family. The most endearing aspect of the documentary is the emotion that each loved one still holds for their beloved Lee. For those who are not aware, his full name Lee Alexander McQueen, but all of his loved ones and pre-fame acquaintances knew him as Lee. Just like on any other given day, everyone referred to McQueen as Lee since most of them had been by his side since the beginning. It was the late Isabella Blow who persuaded him to make Alexander McQueen professional name and alias in the fashion world. An editor for Vogue, Isabella would become a dear friend of McQueen and an influential factor in his work until she died in 2007. Though McQueen would often disagree or despised any mention of it, she was often credited with his discovery. The two developed a relationship after she purchased his entire Jack the Ripper Stalks His Victims collegiate graduation collection for Central Saint Martins College of Arts and Design (CSM). Continued on pg. 16

MCQUEEN
Photos: Ann Ray, Gary Wallis, Courtesy of Bleecker Street
He was the son of a taxi driver and school teacher, who became an expert tailor before his 18th birthday. The youngest of six, he later enrolled in CSM after working as a bespoke tailor. This starting point would become the foundation that McQueen built his entire career as a respected international fashion designer on, with the help of the people closest to him. “McQueen” breaks his life down into specific periods of McQueen’s life, using some of his most iconic collections and runway shows. Through this design, each period contains the mood of his life and his headspace leading up to the point that sparked the inspiration for the collections. It’s always a combination of things that happened in McQueen’s influenced his collections, thus setting the tone each period. Some of his most infamous collections that were used and shown include, Highland Rape, Search for the Golden Fleece’, It’s A Jungle Out There, Voss, and Plato’s Atlantis. During his lifetime, McQueen designed at least 36 collections for his own label. It’s astounding to get to relive some of his extravagant and iconic runway shows; even the ones that he thought was crap. McQueen’s most admirable traits were his ability to create a garment out of almost anything, his vivid imagination and creativity, and his appreciation for drama. Watching a McQueen show was like watching a stage play with no words. He’s one of the few people that understand how much of a production a runway show is and the opportunity that it gives to tell a story. Every show he did had a theme, with dramatic flares and cinematic elements. As much as his creative genius was discussed, so was his humanity. Generally liked by all, his family and friends described him as a fun-loving person who enjoyed life. They discussed inside jokes and pranks that were expected from McQueen just as an amazing garment was expected of him.
16 AUGUST 2018 • v4 i06
It would be a fair assessment to call him benevolent. Though over time, the jokester’s attitude and emotional state became unbearable. According to his friends, at some point, he became a nightmare to work with or be around. During this period in his life, he had become a drug user and surly man who looked like one-third of himself thanks to weight loss surgery. According to his inner circle, they were not exempt from the hell that unleashed. Every moment with him they were unaware of which McQueen they were going to get at the moment. Most of the time he was the mean and intolerable McQueen, but there were still moments when their kind friend would reappear. Though McQueen was obsessed with darkness and death, he was always a nice and kind person at his core. However, a change had occurred where the darkness had taken over. Eventually, the Lee that was talked about by loved ones and shown on videotapes began to fade. He had become suicidal, discussing with friends how he wanted to end his career and planned to kill himself at his own runway show. In 2010 McQueen hung himself on the eve of his mother’s funeral. This is not another film devoted to the love of fashion or just another account of a designer’s life. McQueen gives us a rare chance to experience the life of an extraordinary man through different mediums marked with a distinct impression. The visionary comes with the affinity for darkness. The creative genius does not exist without the jokester, and the award-winning international fashion designer was only made possible by the kindness that McQueen exemplified, and by the help that he received from his loved ones because of his kindness. Due to foul language and nudity, “McQueen” is rated R. The almost two-hour documentary already premiered in the United Kingdom at the beginning of June, and it opened in Atlanta in the beginning of August.

RODIN AND THE ALLEGORY OF SEX By D Stephen Moss
Auguste Rodin (1840 –1917), The Kiss, large version, after 1898, Plaster, cast from first marble version, of 1888–98 © Musée Rodin.
This summer, in London, The British Museum showcased the well-known sculptor, in a first-time showing of over 80 pieces of his work alongside the very Parthenon sculptures that profoundly influenced his work.

A RT A highlight of the show, and possibly one of his most provocative works, The Kiss (1882), evokes two female goddesses, (the original on the East Pediment of the Parthenon) one of which reclines luxuriously in the lap of her companion. The homage to pan-sexuality is titillating. It’s interesting to note that Rodin never sculpted copies of the great Parthenon figures, but instead sought inspiration from them, easily represented in Rising Goddess and Goddesses. The exciting study, once past the initial scale and grandness of the collection (and only after absorbing the overt sexual-ness completely surrounding you) is to fully understand Rodin’s voracious sexual appetite and how it guided his work. In 1875 Rodin visited Italy for the first time as an artist, and it was here which genuinely marked the shift which would characterize his work for the remainder of his life. He was so moved by the works of Donatello and Michelangelo, that his sculptural work became lifelike, without the artifice of the conventions of the beaux-arts classicism of that time, and really a dedication to the representation of the human form and the pleasures of the flesh. It is difficult to be in the presence of a massive Rodin sculpture without the acknowledgment of sex, for what defines the connection and contribution of the body of work from his later years is the raw and natural appreciation of the human body in its most pure and unaltered state. The Kiss is a great example of this- a lyrical eroticism between two women embraced and entwined. One needs only to explore a little further into his near-pornographic studies of nude models performing acrobatics and sexual acts to be certain that sex and desire was most certainly the passion which drove his art. Rodin was notorious for having sexual relations with the women who posed for him. So the next time you’re lusting an afternoon filled with penises, breasts, and naked bodies… run NOT to the local bathhouse but your nearest museum filled with Rodin and the likes. It will transform you in ways unimagined, and leave you with an experience you can actually share with your parents or colleagues over dinner.

COMMUNITY
By Mikkel Hyldebrandt
The Atlanta Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce works tirelessly to create economic opportunities for LGBT businesses and professionals, and in September the organization celebrates its mission and members at their annual community awards dinner. The AGLCC hosts numerous networking and business summits and forums, but the highlight of their event calendar is their annual Community Awards Dinner that honors the best and the brightest of Atlanta’s LGBTQ business community. The September 21 gala – this year held at the Marriot Marquis – is a chance for the AGLCC to celebrate its mission to facilitate economic opportunities and business inroads for LGBT businesses and professionals, which also includes political advocacy that influences individuals’ lives beyond the business sector. The awards dinner is a platform for the organization to honor those individuals, businesses, and institutions that go above and beyond to further the AGLCC mission. The nominees of the night are selected through a careful process that not only looks at strong business acumen but also takes factors like embodying the values of the AGLCC into consideration. The awards recognize achievement and contribution of the LGBTQ and allied community, and receiving an award at the dinner shows an outstanding individual, business, ally, or partner to the community. The categories are Small Business of the Year, Businessman of the Year, Businesswoman of the Year, The Guardian Angel Award, Rising Star Award, Corporate Ally Award, and Member of the Year. Additionally, two awards – the Van Guard Award and the Rosemary Jones Icon Award – will be given to two members who have shown significant contributions to

the LGBTQ business community. As always the award recipients will be outstanding representatives of leadership, success, and values embodied by the AGLCC*. *At the time of publication this year’s nominees had not yet been released – look for updates on Goliath’s Facebook page.
Did You Know…? In 1994, the Greater Atlanta Business Association became the nation’s first recognized LGBTQ Chamber of Commerce. Before 2002, LGBTQ business networking group went by names that would not identify them as such.

He’s so odd socially but he’s adorable and his mind just thinks differently. Do opposites really attract? “Brain” DEAR DEVEN: My partner was growing distant so I asked him to be truthful and tell me if it was something I did. He said I was controlling, humorless, and not active enough in his life! I’m not a monster Deven. “Stone Cold”
