EDITOR’S NOTE

new season is upon us, and that means changing up your wardrobe. There is the practical side of starting to layer up – even though summer doesn’t seem to let entirely go yet – and, of course, there is a whole bunch of new trends that will fit perfectly with the changing season. We have lined up some of the key trends that you can update your fall look with – get ready for some vintage styling and wearable artworks. Our photo shoot By Gastohn Barrios highlights some of the fashion items that are staples for fall without it necessarily becoming gloomier or moodier, but merely giving you layers of style. The High Museum is bringing international sensation Yayoi Kusama to Atlanta in November with her sensational

Infinity Mirrors; immersive kaleidoscopic environments that create the illusion of infinite space – and we give you a preview before the art world turns its gaze towards Atlanta in November. Speaking of kaleidoscope: during a recent trip to Iceland, I came across the new opera house, Harpa, in the heart of Reykjavik. The stunning structure stands out like a marvel in the beautiful city and is worth a visit for any fan of design and architecture. And lastly, if you need a little advice on how to handle your life – or just life lessons in general – our comedic muse, Deven Green, offers experience to solve your problems to close out the issue. Marking the Land By Mikkel Hyldebrandt Photo: shutterstock.com

Since its opening in May 2011, The Harpa Reykjavik Concert Hall and Conference Centre has become one of the most significant landmarks in the Icelandic capital, and the award-winning building has become the national and international cultural hub that it was set out to be as construction commenced back in 2007. Situated on the waterfront in Reykjavik, the impressive building gives you Frank Gehry vibes combined with the kaleidoscopic perspectives of Danish-Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson, who was also one of the primary forces on the Harpa project. Eliasson’s sculptural style that incorporates elements of light and reflection is evident in the building’s glass facet façade that beautifully reflects the surroundings and the weather while also creating the perfect playground for colors and projections directly onto the surface. Henning Larsen Architects and Batteríið Architects were involved in drawing Harpa, which gives the structure its distinct Nordic features and stricter design expression. The distinctive colored glass façade combined with sharp lines and ever-changing perspectives is remnant of the lava landscapes and ever-changing weather conditions of Iceland, while the angularity also alludes to a musical instrument – a harp, 16 SEPTEMBER 2018 • v4 i07

from which the name also stems. Another facet to the name is derived from an old Icelandic word from the old Nordic calendar that refers to a time of year that marks the beginning of summer and a brighter season where nature and colors come to life – just like they do in the reflective glass surface of the building. A testament to the architecture is the fact that Harpa was awarded the prestigious Mies van der Rohe Award in 2013 for outstanding architecture. It has also won the award for best public space from Arkitekturmassan Awards 2012, and the World Architecture Award in 2010. The building is not only beautiful to behold, but the inside reveals its own allure. Apart from a world-class concert hall and state of the art conference center, Harpa gives you stunning views of the city and harbor, so even if you are not interested in architecture, a guided tour is definitely worth it. After all, Harpa stands out like the most significant landmark in Reykjavik, so you shouldn’t miss it! More info about Harpa, concerts, and guided tours at harpa.is.

Organized by the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, the Smithsonian’s modern and contemporary art museum, the exhibition will be on view at the High Museum from November 18, 2018, through February 17, 2019. 18 SEPTEMBER 2018 • v4 i07

A RT Over the course of her career, the artist has produced more than twenty individual Infinity Mirror Rooms, and the exhibition at the High Museum will be presenting six of them from the Hirshhorn collection. This is the most ever shown together, and they will display the scope of Kusama’s artistic prowess and furthermore create unique opportunities for the viewer to immerse themselves in the kaleidoscopic environments that create the illusion of infinite space. The rooms also explore the artist’s central themes, such as the celebration of life and its aftermath. As well as the iconic kaleidoscopic environments, the exhibitions offers her large-scale installations, sculptures, paintings, works on paper, and archival photographs and films from the early 1950s through the present. The exhibition features numerous new works by the 87-year-old artist, who is regarded as one of the most influential artists of the 20th century and is still very active in her Tokyo studio. New works include vibrantly colored paintings and the recently completed infinity room “All the Eternal Love I Have for the Pumpkins” (2016), featuring dozens of Kusama’s signature bright-yellow, dotted pumpkin sculptures.

A Journey of Creative Genius “Yayoi Kusama: Infinity Mirrors” begins with the artist’s original landmark installation, “Infinity Mirror Room—Phalli’s Field” (1965/2016), featuring a vast expanse of red-spotted white tubers in a room lined with mirrors, which create a dazzling illusion of infinite space. The exhibition will also include “Infinity Mirrored Room—Love Forever” (1966/1994), a hexagonal chamber into which viewers peer from the outside to see colored flashing lights that reflect endlessly from ceiling to floor. The work is a re-creation of Kusama’s legendary 1966 mirror room “Kusama’s Peep Show” (or “Endless Love Show”), in which the artist staged group performances in her studio. Kusama’s signature bold polka dots will be featured in “Dots Obsession—Love Transformed into Dots” (2007), a domed mirror room surrounded by inflatables suspended from the ceiling. The artist’s more recent LED environments, filled with lanterns or crystalline balls that seem to extend infinitely, will be represented in “Aftermath of Obliteration of Eternity” (2009) and “Infinity Mirrored Room—The Souls of Millions of Light Years Away” (2013).

“Kusama’s Infinity Mirror Rooms open onto places within the imagination that are beautiful and transcendent. Like sensory deprivation chambers, they leave the viewer grappling to reconcile the totality of the cosmos with a sense of microcosmic infinity within the body,” said Michael Rooks, the High’s Wieland Family curator of modern and contemporary art. “It is an enormous privilege to present this foundational work by Kusama.” Also on view in the exhibition will be a selection of more than 60 paintings, sculptures, and works on paper, including many of Kusama’s infrequently shown collages, which she made after returning to Japan following a stay in New York City from 1957 to 1973. These works trace the artist’s trajectory from her early surrealist works on paper, “Infinity Net” paintings, and “Accumulation” assemblages to recent paintings and soft sculptures, which highlight recurring themes of nature and fantasy, utopia and dystopia, unity and isolation, obsession and detachment, and life and death. The exhibition will conclude with Kusama’s iconic participatory installation “The Obliteration Room” (2002), an all-white replica of a traditional domestic setting. Upon entering, visitors will be invited to cover every surface of the furnished gallery with multicolored polka dot stickers to gradually engulf the entire space in color.

CHER

Time to Cher! By Mikkel Hyldebrandt

Photo: Warner Bros. Records

The Oscar, Emmy and Grammy Award-winning icon was inspired to record the new album following her performance in the recently-released film musical, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again. You probably heard the collective gasp, as the news broke of the one and only Cher releasing a new album of all ABBA hits at the end of September. Just think about it: ABBA AND Cher! The blissful idea for the album came about as Cher was filming Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, and the songs from the extensive ABBA catalog grew in the iconic star’s mind to slowly take the shape of an entire collection. “I’ve always liked Abba and saw the original Mamma Mia musical on Broadway three times. After filming Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, I was reminded again of what great and timeless songs they wrote and started thinking ‘why not do an album of their music?” Dancing Queen was recorded and produced in London and Los Angeles with Cher’s longtime collaborator Mark Taylor, who previously produced Cher’s global smash Believe which was number one in over 50 countries. The track listing includes ten songs that were curated not only for their universal and timeless hit potential but also to both challenge and accommodate Cher’s unique singing voice. “The songs were harder to sing than I imagined but I’m so happy with how the music came out. I’m really excited for people to hear it. It’s a perfect time.” The first single from the album is Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight), which in its updated version both pays tribute to the disco pop sound of ABBA, but also takes listeners back to Cher’s Believe comeback in 1998. It wasn’t long until

22 SEPTEMBER 2018 • v4 i07

the release of that first single spawned a clever mashup of Cher’s version of the song and Madonna’s Hung Up, which uses a wellknown sample from Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! Naturally, the listing also includes the title track Dancing Queen, and classics ABBA hits like The Name of the Game, SOS, Waterloo (which launched ABBA’s career in the 1974 Eurovision song contest), Mamma Mia, Fernando, Chiquitita, One Of Us, and the Winner Takes It All. As if launching an album and performing a residency show at MGM Resorts, Cher will be co-producing The Cher Show, the upcoming Broadway musical opening on December 3rd, and she will be touring Australia and New Zealand in September. Furthermore, Cher is scheduled to be awarded a Kennedy Center Honor on December 2nd in Washington DC. This is indeed the time to Cher!

A DV ICE

WELL HELLO.

IT’S DEVEN GREEN

DEVEN GREEN is an award-winning comedic chanteuse. You know her from the “Welcome To My Home” and “Welcome To My White House” parodies and str umming an electric ukulele with her green thumb. DevenGreen.com

DEAR DEVEN: Guess who fell in love with a stray that my roommate brought home? Me. I am the one feeding and spending all my time with him. I’m in love. “Envy” DEAR DEVEN: Is global warming really real? “Soylent” DEAR DEVEN: Do you believe in luck? “Clover”

I will assume that you are talking about an animal and not a human. Ask your roommate if he feels he has bonded with the pet. If not, maybe there is better match for your roommate thereby leaving the stray in your loving care.

Climate change is not a faith-based question. It’s a scientific fact.

I have faith in myself, hope for the future and love everyday.

DEAR DEVEN: After you see it in your mind you can I want to go to a place where I have create it in your reality. a chance. Where is that? “Emerald” DEAR DEVEN: Fluorescent clothes should have stayed in the 80’s, right!? “Neon”

Everything is based off of something else, isn’t it? Some reiterations are improvements of the original while others are just disdainful repeats.

DEAR DEVEN: What is better? Staying in one place or roaming? “Moss”

Stay because you wish to not because you are obligated. Roam because you are curious not because you are running.

DEAR DEVEN: Can you be allergic to kissing? It’s called “the kiss of death” for a “Pistachio” reason. DEAR DEVEN: We have a cabin-themed house but my bear of a husband sprays You need natural wood. Open a window everything to smell like the and let nature enter as opposed to outdoors. It is too much wilderness! artificially creating it. “Pine”

DEAR DEVEN: In school did anyone make fun of your last name? “Deven”

I would say, “I’m Deven Green Beans” before anyone else could, thereby beating them to the punch. Make smarter choices about whose words you care about. I’m glad you are listening to me.
