hen it comes to celebrity, disco, drugs, and dancing, nothing surpasses the legend of Studio 54; the NYC disco that experienced its fabled heyday in the late 70s. Even though it was only open for 33 months in total, the myth surrounding the discotheque lives on. Writer Gregg Shapiro talked to Matt Tyrnaur who directed a 2018 documentary about Studio 54, who got his account from the disco’s creator, Ian Schrager – supposedly one of the only people who could tell the real story about the venue. Bespoke Never Looked Better The art of bespoke tailoring isn’t lost on Atlanta. Neil Balani, the owner and chief tailor of HKT Custom Clothiers, has created highly customized suiting for Atlantans since 2005, and the family-run business has offered bespoke tailoring since 1970. In fact, if you’re looking for a Savile Row-style tailoring establishment, you will feel very comfortable in the capable hands of Neil, who both understands the logistics of running a bespoke clothing brand, as well as the intricacies of how to tailor.
Neil, How did you get into tailoring? Back home in Malta, my dad was in the men’s clothing and tailoring business, so I saw it on the daily when I was visiting him at the shop. HKT is a bit different because we’re into making custom suits, versus just alterations. But, tailoring has always been in my life.
Explain the process of creating a bespoke suit for a client. First is understanding the client’s needs to get an idea of what fabric is needed and their lifestyle. We help them choose fabrics; we carry over 3,000 different types, which are all different depending on the use such as work travel or a wedding. We then go through the details of the garment, including the styling of the suit - so one or two button, pleats or no pleats, double-breasted or not. Then we take body measurements to create a pattern, which we keep on file. In four to six weeks the garment will be complete for him to try where we will do a couple of light fittings to make additional adjustments. Then it will be completed in a week.
What elements are crucial to creating the perfectly tailored suit? The key is to understand what a client wants, but at the same time give them the advice on how a suit should fit. It’s not as easy as just taking body measurements, but consulting them on how we can design the suit to fit for their body. Beyond suits, HKT Custom Clothiers offer custom shirts, belts, jeans, sports jackets, trousers, tuxedos, sweaters, polos, as well as a whole line of luxury men’s accessories like ties pocket, squares, cufflinks, and sunglasses.
What’s your favorite item of clothing – and why? I love my bold sports jackets and a nice pocket square to give it that finesse. I like to make a statement, but at the same time I tone it down with nice jeans or dark colored pants to keep it in balance.

How do you keep up with trends and get inspiration for your work? I go through our archives and take inspiration from what we created over the years. Since we’ve been in business so long, we can look back and see what we were creating in the 70s and 80s to take inspiration. I also watch what’s happening with British and Italian fashion trends, pulling from the best trends to create our own here in Atlanta. As a bit of Savile Row flair in Atlanta – how do you view the style of Atlanta’s men? Style in Atlanta has really improved from even five years ago. I’m now seeing that even the youngest generation is dressing up much more instead of wearing shorts and tees to the office. The music and film industry has also had an influence in making people dress up more. The younger man wants to stand out as a person, and from a style and business perspective, it’s upped the game. Atlanta has its own look that’s in the middle of LA and NYC, so a mix of casual street style with curated dressed up and well-designed pieces. What is it about bespoke suiting that makes it so unique? Bespoke suiting is an art and a craft that is very unique in itself. It’s all about perfection and making something that is precisely for the individual, not an off the peg suit that has to be altered to try and fit them. At HKT it is a personal service as well; we get to build a relationship with our clients, and that helps us set a different standard. You really have to get to understand someone as a person to craft something so personal for them.
Why should every man experience having a custom clothing item made? Everyone should experience knowing that a clothing item is made just for them, solidly for their body. It’s not going to fit anyone else. I think the custom clothing experience is extraordinary and amazing from start to finish. There is nothing better than having something that fits for your confidence. That is where guys have trouble buying off the rack clothing because the items don’t fit great and they are uncomfortable. With alterations, you can only do so much. What do you think is the biggest misconception about bespoke clothing? People tend to think bespoke clothing is just way too expensive, but realistically it’s not. They think it’s something beyond their conception or are even unaware of it. But it’s really something to try in life. Once you enjoy the process, you’ll find it amazing.

Alberto Giacometti. A Retrospective This exhibition surveys four decades of production by Alberto Giacometti (b. 1901; d. 1966), one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. More than 200 sculptures, paintings, and drawings make up a show that offers a unique perspective on the artist’s work, highlighting the extraordinary holdings of artworks and archive material gathered by Giacometti’s wife, Annette. There’s no doubt that documentary filmmaker Matt Tyrnauer is on a roll. You may recognize his name from his award-winning 2008 doc Valentino: The Last Emperor, about the titular gay fashion designer. It’s more likely, however, that it’s his current popular release Scotty and the Secret History of Hollywood, which opened in theaters this summer that has caught your eye.
SHARING SECRETS AN INTERVIEW WITH FILMMAKER MATT TYRNAUER By Gregg Shapiro

The doc, based on Scotty Bowers’ memoir in which he recounts his life as procurer to the stars, has them lining up at the box office. Tyrnauer’s new doc Studio 54 (Altimeter Films), which is currently making the LGBTQ film festival circuit, is an eye-opening look at the history and abrupt end of the renowned late-1970s Manhattan disco Studio 54, as told by co-founder Ian Schrager and a host of others. I spoke with Matt about his movie in early autumn 2018.
I’d like to begin by congratulating you on the positive reception that Scotty and the Secret History of Hollywood has received upon its release. Thank you.
What does that mean to you as a filmmaker? I’m thrilled that Scotty has been so well-received. It’s a very important movie to me because it pulls together a lot of thematic strands that are of interest to me and have appeared in my other work, among them alternate histories, being material about Hollywood itself, the exploration of a character in a very deep way and coming at a character in, perhaps, an unexpected angle. The material is difficult, so that people, by and large, have responded to it positively, means an extraordinary amount to me.
FILM that fertile ground. The basic story is known around the world, but it’s never been given the full-dress documentary treatment. It’s a fascinating story that has a lot more to it than sex, drugs and disco, which is the version of it that normally gets told. Like with Scotty and the Secret History of Hollywood, it might seem at first like a frivolous subject matter – nightclubs and music and celebrities and bacchanalias – but I think there’s a lot more to it which I was keen to explore. Early in the Studio 54 doc, Ian Schrager, one of the co-creators of the disco (and as he put it, one of only two people who could tell the story) says that after almost 40 years it’s all right for him to talk about. How long had you been in contact with Schrager before you were able to begin production?
Scotty and the Secret History of Hollywood along with RBG, Won’t You Be My Neighbor, Three Identical Strangers and Fahrenheit 11/9, to name a few, are the reason that 2018 is being called “the year of the documentary”. As a doc filmmaker, what does it mean to you to see the genre experiencing such popularity? It’s not only the year of the documentary, it’s the year of the theatrical documentary, which I think is very significant. I’ve been a big proponent of the theatrical doc which is something that has been declared dead many times, even since I’ve been making documentaries. I think that it’s extremely important for documentaries to be in movie theaters because they, like all film, should provoke conversation. I think there’s nothing to replace the theater-going experience for the conversation that occurs generally after the movie ends on the way up the aisle, out into the street and maybe to the restaurant or the bar. That newly discovered phenomenon of theatrical documentary, said with irony, is really welcome and not surprising to me. I feel like people have been saying to me for years, “The movies I really like to go see are the documentaries.” It’s kind of like a whispered aside. I think that it’s come into its own because theatrical films are so polarized now. There are the blockbuster tent-poles and there are the little scrappy indies. The so-called sophisticated, mid-budget films, which are the films a lot of people at least like, sort of disappeared from the landscape. To me, these successful theatrical docs have filled that void.
How much does your being a journalist have to do with your interest in doc filmmaking? I think it’s related. I started my career as a journalist, but always had a keen interest in film. I was even a film major in college. It seemed like a logical progression to me to make the leap from long-form journalism to documentary filmmaking. One thing that I found mildly frustrating as a writer was that I have a visual side to me and it was not possible for me to flex those muscles as a writer. Let alone the fact that writing is the loneliest job in the world and filmmaking is the least lonely and most collaborative. There’s a lot less loneliness and a lot more happiness in the doc world.
Your new doc Studio 54, which is screening at the OUTshine Film Festival in Fort Lauderdale in October, is an unflinching look at the famed disco and those associated with it. What inspired you to take on this subject? Studio 54 is one of those subjects that I think is prime for a documentary. Because it’s something that people think they know about but they don’t really know about. I’ve always found
I’ve known him because I wrote about him. We discussed the film project for a few weeks before we agreed to make the movie.
What was involved in the process of gathering other interview subjects? It’s interesting, there’s a kind of Studio 54 diaspora. The club was only open for 33 months in its original incarnation. The people who helped create the club and staffed it for those 33 months are very attached to each other spiritually. Even if they weren’t in touch on a regular basis, it’s just what I called it – a diaspora. They all have a common origin story and Studio 54 helped define their lives. If you know a few of those people, they lead you to all of the rest.
Roy Cohn was Ian Schrager and Steve Rubell’s lawyer during their legal troubles with the IRS and the government. Were you already planning to make Where’s My Roy Cohn? your next doc project or did the concept come about while you were making Studio 54? It absolutely came out of Studio 54. I was watching all of this archival footage of Roy Cohn and became fairly mesmerized by his onscreen persona, which has been described as “serpentlike”. He’s really compelling to watch. He has this Dark Prince of the TV Tube persona. He was on my mind a lot as a character and someone who hadn’t been explored in a documentary. That’s how that came about.
Lastly, would you please say something about the queer subject matter in your films, including Valentino: The Last Emperor, Scotty and the Secret History of Hollywood, Studio 54 and the upcoming Where’s My Roy Cohn? There’s a lot of queer in my movies which I’m very happy about. There’s a lot of queer in me, too. To the extent that I believe that films should be personal, that’s one of my themes and it’s not a coincidence and it’s no mistake. Each of the films you mentioned looks at the subject matter in its own particular way. I believe that sex is politics. My friend Gore Vidal told me that. I make political films that might not seem on the surface to be political. Sex and sexuality are themes that these films have in common. To the extent that I’m fascinated in exploring that, it’s a political subject for me and I’m not going to stop exploring it as I continue on in making future projects.

Rubem Robierb successfully captures the beholder’s attention compelling the viewer to extract the underlying message of the artwork – a particularly powerful trait of Robierb’s art. Rubem Robierb’s most significant artistic talent is his ability to bestow the seemingly banal with monumental proportions. Case in point: His BulletFly Effect paintings that combine the beauty and delicate innocence of butterfly wings with a bullet body to create a powerful metaphor of violent transformation. His use of figures, that span from commonplace to iconic, are given new and profound meanings that reveal themselves as the beholder discover the subtle signs that Robierb so masterfully hides in plain sight.

His work carries an innate connection to the pop art movement where he, like Andy Warhol, creates a visually compelling dimensionality and figurativeness that conveys powerful messages to the beholder. His link to the contemporary art movement is also apparent with references to Damien Hirst whose use of natural elements creates a constant dialogue between life and death. Robierb’s strong inspiration from street art is also evident in many of his works constructing politically laden layers to his artworks. In turn, the constant play on the permanence of all things life links him to contemporary Banksy.
