FROM THE MANAGING EDITOR . G. MICHAEL DOBBS
“I reverently believe that the Maker who made us all makes everything in New England but the weather. I don’t know who makes that, but I think it must be raw apprentices in the weather-clerk’s factory who experiment and learn how, in New England, for board and clothes, and then are promoted to make weather for countries that require a good article, and will take their custom elsewhere if they don’t get it. “There is a sumptuous variety about the New England weather that compels the stranger’s admiration -- and regret. The weather is always doing something there; always attending strictly to business; always getting up new designs and trying them on the people to see how they will go...” Mark Twain about New England weather As I write this, the temperature in the morning was reported as 1 degree – not unexpected for late January in Massachusetts. I should also note that recently the temperature hurled itself up to 60 degrees. Perhaps Mark Twain was right with his words “a sumptuous variety.” The 1-degree mark is more typical than the 60 degree high, though. Despite the enticing inclination to adopt as close an activity as hibernation, New Englanders push on with their work and play despite the temperatures. Yes, some of us suffer with a 21st century version of “cabin fever.” The term, according to Wikipedia, which knows all, is defined as “an idiomatic term for a claustrophobic reaction that takes place when a person or group ends up in an isolated or solitary location, or stuck indoors in confined quarters for an extended period of time.” Well, I’m not sure if any of us truly suffers in that way, but the on-going combination of winter storms and cold temperatures can take their toll. Many of us simply want to get out of our homes and do something. Our regular feature listing local events gives you a choice of indoor or outdoor options to address your cabin fever. If you take a look there are outdoor activities – such as a Moonlight Run in Somers around Camp Aya Po and a winter walk at Laughing Brook in Hampden – and indoor events such as a quilting class in Holyoke and a sushi making party in Hadley. Despite the low temperatures, New Englanders celebrate the winter. If it was not true would we have an event such as the Northampton Ice Art Festival, slated for Feb. 14? Or a celebration of New England history with the ice harvest from Nashawannuck Pond in Easthampton on Feb. 8? Indoor activities featured in this issue include a trip to Odin’s Keep, an Enfield, CT, business that presents axe-throwing with opportunities to play the world’s largest PacMan game, air hockey, arcade amusements as well as adults to enjoy craft beer. If axe throwing isn’t your idea of fun, perhaps the painting and pottery combination at Tipsy Paint Brush and Kil’n is more to your liking. Fortunately for those of us who need a reminder that winter will change into spring, this issue, with a story about Clarissa Marchia and her flower business, Lucy Blooms in Northampton is for you. There are few things that express life and the growing season as fresh flowers. In the meantime while we wait for spring, let’s keep warm and enjoy what winter has to offer. - G. TRAVELING TO FOR THE PERFECT DIAMOND
Michael Szwed enjoys the thrill of the hunt…for the perfect diamond, that is. He isn’t interested in any ordinary diamonds. He specifically travels to Antwerp, Belgium, the “diamond capital of the world”, to hand-select them for his clients. He first learned about the Antwerp Diamond Broker Program while he was still working for his family’s jewelry store. “Michael Szwed Jewelers is a member of the largest jewelry-buying group in world called the Independent Jewelers Organization (IJO),” says Szwed. “The IJO consists of approximately 800 independent retail jewelers throughout the United States and Canada. Being a member of the IJO has allowed me to have the opportunity to participate in the Antwerp Diamond Broker Program.” Szwed reminisces about going to his first IJO show in Boston. “I was a young kid coming out of college, excited to help my family’s business grow. Sure enough, there was an independent seminar about going to Antwerp. After I joined the IJO, I started having conversations with them about going to Antwerp.” Since 2012, Szwed has owned and operated his Longmeadow, MA store. He comes from a line of jewelry experts, so it was only natural that he developed a career as a jeweler himself. On his most recent trip to Antwerp, Belgium in October 2019, Szwed had the pleasure of hand-selecting diamonds GOLOCALMAGAZINES.COM 13
for three clients looking to create a custom piece for someone special. He submits a list of specifics for his clients two weeks prior to traveling to Antwerp. By this time, clients have already committed to their purchases. “The inventory in Antwerp is so vast,” says Szwed. “There is so much variety. A lot of the best diamond cutters and stones travel through Antwerp.” He visits various diamond houses in Antwerp; all offering different cuts, quality, colors, and more. Once selected, the diamonds get shipped directly back to the Longmeadow store. Client Alex D. purchased a loose diamond from Szwed’s visit to Antwerp as a gift for his wife to celebrate their 35th wedding anniversary. “I surprised her with a loose diamond,” Alex describes. “When I purchased it, I gave [Szwed] parameters and sure enough he found several stones and called me from Antwerp and gave me the pros and cons of each.” From there, Alex gifted the handpicked diamond to his wife and asked her what she wanted to do with it. “She decided on a ring and I gave the final piece to her on our anniversary weekend. She picked a beautiful setting with stones on the side.” Alex was wowed by Szwed’s professionalism and presentation. “When [he] presented the diamond to me, I received a hardcover book with the story of our diamond. We also got a bottle of champagne, diamond-shaped chocolates from Belgium, and a thumb drive with the video story of the diamond selection 14 GO LOCAL FEBRUARY 2020
process.” A video is made for each customer that shows Szwed picking their actual diamond in Antwerp. “What I do for every couple that I travel to Antwerp for is I take a personal video with the diamond house owner so they can see the journey of their diamond,” says Szwed. He also makes sure to stop at Goossen’s Chocolatier for diamond-shaped chocolates. “In our opinion, this is the top chocolatier in Antwerp,” says Szwed. “I have to make my stop there and make sure I can get there and get chocolates for my customers. I buy diamond-shaped chocolates that have sugar sparkles with white chocolate and fudge on the inside. The chocolates travel with me on the flight personally.” “[Szwed] is the most professional jeweler I have worked with in my entire life,” adds Alex. “When people buy things like diamonds, it’s a blind process. We trusted him because he made every step in the process so easy. We had so many options with flexibility and cost.” Another client, Jason M., came to Szwed looking to create an engagement ring. “He brought in a picture of a very unique design that his fiancée-to-be had given to him,” says Szwed. Jason says, “The ring was special because of how it was selected overseas in Antwerp. My experience working with Michael was unbelievable. His ability to gain your trust, his attention to detail, and his outgoing personality really made you feel more like a friend than a customer. After shopping around at different jewelers, I am happy I chose to work with Michael. His emphasis was more on quality than pricing. He took the most time to educate me about what I was buying and helped me understand pricing and had a certain level that he was comfortable selling before compromising quality. He is a higher-end salesman and went the extra mile to help me make an educated purchase. My fiancée and I were just absolutely blown away by the final result. The size, quality, and cut of the stone exceeded both our expectations.” Customer Pete C. worked with Szwed to give his wife a gift she always wanted for her 40th birthday: a yellow gold diamond pendant necklace.
“For as long as I’ve known my wife, she has always wanted a diamond necklace,” Pete says. “I had a very good picture of what it would look like in my mind. Michael did a great job showing me examples and a picture of what it would look like. When I saw the final product, I was like, ‘yes, this is perfect.’ It was exactly what my wife was looking for.” Pete also had great things to say about his time working with Szwed. “Michael was pleasant beyond the service side of it,” he says. “If you have an idea of what you’d like to get, just go in and talk to him. He is extremely knowledgeable and talks you through it. He made the process easy and does a very good job of showing you your ideas. I think very highly of Michael.” And of course, Pete’s wife loved the final piece. “My wife was shocked and completely surprised that she was getting the diamond pendant that she always wanted,” Pete says. He surprised her with the necklace during a weekend in New York City in December and gave it to her right near the ice rink at Rockefeller Center. Aside from getting the opportunity to travel to Antwerp, Szwed’s favorite part of the jewelry-making process is “being a small part in such an important moment in our customers’ lives,” he says. “We have the opportunity to help our customer present the perfect engagement ring, anniversary pendant, or birthstone ring [to someone special]. Diamonds are for all different occasions.” And the Antwerp diamonds surely add the “wow” factor that Szwed enjoys so much. After the finished product is gifted or presented to its recipient, he loves to hear the presentation stories. “Creating these relationships with people is what it’s all about,” he says. And on top of that, all of the small detailed things he adds to the process makes those customers’ experiences that much more special. So, what’s next for Szwed? “I am going back to Antwerp in April,” he smiles.

larissa Marchia is in every sense of the word a flower child. She’s not a ’60s hippie – but a floral artist who flowers the New England area and beyond with her amazing floral designs that she creates as the artist behind Lucy Blooms. As a child growing up, Marchia loved perusing outside for hours for small weeds and dandelions and using them to create something. She said she “forgot how much I loved the natural beauty of flowers” until she graduated from college in San Francisco – which just happens to be the “flower power” city of the sixties that inspired the Scott McKenzie song “San Francisco (Wear Some Flowers in Your Hair).” “I moved back to Western Massachusetts and the beauty of nature in this area, from the summer flowers growing on the side of the roads to the changing
autumn leaves, is what inspired me to resort back to my childhood intuition of loving flowers. I started to pick flowers on my daily walks and bring them home to make arrangements,” Marchia said. Still, she felt “lost in my life.” “I had no idea what sparked my curiosity or made me want to learn more. I hired a life coach, and through her I was able to sift through what was clouding my judgment and it was perfectly clear that I was meant to be a florist. I allowed myself to fulfill this dream of mine and that’s how Lucy Blooms began,” Marchia said. So, the “blooms” part of her business name is understandable, but the Lucy part needs explanation. “Growing up, my mom always called me Lucy, and still does, as a nickname because my middle name is Lucila-Marie. Tying Lucy into my business is my tribute to my childhood and my child-
GOLOCALMAGAZINES.COM 19
hood intuition of loving the world through flowers. Lucy Blooms is an extension of myself personified in flowers. When someone sees Lucy Blooms, I want them to think of my business as a person. The idea of having my personal ‘Lizzie McGuire’ was my biggest inspiration behind the name,” Marchia said. While there was no “floral” major at college in San Francisco, Marchia said she is “proud to be a selftaught artist.” “It has taken me 25 years to get to this point. Floral design is much more than the physical flower - it is about color, composition, interpretation, empathy, being present, tuning in to nature’s gift and meditating on it. The experiences I have had in my 25 years of life have given me this perspective, and I am hoping to change the way people think about flowers,” Marchia said. “My drive and curiosity led me to learn everything I know today, and will continue to learn as the industry keeps changing. There have been countless hours of tutorials, attending workshops, working alongside designers in New York City and Boston, and now always keeping up with the trends of the industry,” she added. Working out of Northampton, Marchia continues her love of flowers by specializing in wedding services, event decoration, flower bars for events, home parties, everyday floral arrangements, weekly deliveries for businesses, creative services and more. Marchia noted that flowers are definitely playing a more prominent role in weddings today. “Maybe I’m biased, but flowers are becoming the focus in modern weddings. Flowers are an expressive form of art that can change the atmosphere of any space, and I believe couples who are getting married are aware of this and want to incorporate this into their ceremony as much as possible. Instagram also makes it easy for couples to see the design possibilities for their wedding flowers. Bouquets are getting bigger and designs are getting creative - it’s an exciting time to be a floral designer,” she said. Marchia added that weddings have a special place in her heart. “I truly love getting to know my brides and grooms and designing for their dream day. An initial consultation with my couple is necessary. It’s important for me to meet my clients and get to know what styles and designs they love before working with them. I want to make sure it is a perfect match for both parties,” she said. Her website even noted they create flowers for those who want to elope. “I am a huge fan of spontaneity and love, and an elopement is an expression of both coming together. I have yet to create something beautiful for an elopement, but it’s a service I will always offer. Hopefully, 20 GO LOCAL FEBRUARY 2020
one day, a bride will call me on her way to city hall asking me to create her wedding bouquet,” Marchia said. Beyond weddings, Marchia said “the possibilities are endless” with her event services. “I have hosted a Lucy Blooms flower bar and worked one-on-one with my clients in their own home. Event services involve the same planning and effort as a wedding, and is a service for anyone with a small or large budget,” she said. Lucy Blooms offers flower bars for any event. Her flower bars range from 1-2 hours of unlimited flowers and supplies, so guests can create their own bouquets while choosing from a variety of blooms. She also offers “flower parties” for anyone who wants to host one in their home. Similar to a workshop, it’s a oneon-one design class where guests gather in a home and Marchia teaches the basics of floral design with a class. All supplies are provided. Marchia has also offered workshops that range in a variety of topics on floristry. “I fully intend on hosting another series of workshops this year so more people in the community can come together and have fun with flowers,” she said. For those who want to be constantly surrounded by flowers, Marchia offers floral subscriptions to anyone who wants flowers delivered to them on a regular basis. “By signing up for my subscription services, you can choose from a weekly, biweekly, monthly, or seasonal delivery service. I highly recommend floral subscriptions for businesses because it’s a beautiful way to keep your storefront looking fresh and inviting. And, it makes a great gift for flower lovers,” she said. She also plans what she calls “photoshoots.” “Before I was a floral designer, I was a photographer. I love how a lot of creative backgrounds can mesh together and intersect. I am bringing together my creative skills as a designer and photographer and offering the community something I haven’t seen from a florist
before - floral photoshoots,” Marchia said. She designs, plans, and executes the entire shoot based on what her client wants. Photoshoots she has worked on in the past have included boudoir, shooting in a garden-like setting, and product styling. For larger shoots, she teams up with a local photographer so that she can focus more on designing the flowers. But, for smaller, intimate shoots, she designs the flowers and photographs the entire shoot. Sustainability is a very important part of Lucy Blooms. Marchia designs without using floral foam, which she noted is “toxic to humans and the environment and is not biodegradable.” “This is challenging for large-scale installations, but designing foam-free, as the industry calls it, just requires proper planning and thoughtful design. My tissue paper for wrapped bouquets and packaging is made with compostable material and printed with acid-free, soy- based ink. I feel a lot better knowing my flowers are not wrapped in cellophane. For my signature vases, I use Mason Jars or repurpose jars gifted to me and paint them in Lucy Blooms inspired colors. As I continue to grow as a business, I will learn more about how I can continue to be sustainable in my business and what needs improvement,” she said. All arrangements by Lucy Blooms can be ordered online through her website for deliveries anytime. However, she does not have a storefront to visit, which Marchia said is why “having a great marketing strategy is important to me.” “But I prefer it this way. I love being able to travel and freelance with other designers without having to worry about closing a shop. There are pros and cons to it, of course, but I’d rather have the freedom and not have a storefront to tend to,” she said.

BAKER'S LANE otti

rowing up, Lyn Fioravanti’s family always gave their homemade biscotti and pizzelle away to friends for Christmas. “We would hear the same thing every time. ‘These biscotti and pizzelle are so delicious’ and ‘You can't buy Italian cookies that taste as good as yours do anywhere.’ And even ‘You should market these,’” she said. So, in 2018 Fioravanti granted their wishes and launched Baker's Lane Biscotti. “I do it as a way to honor my family members who took the time to pass this tradition down to my generation,” she said. As a registered dietitian, Fioravanti wanted to offer a simply-made, all-natural delicious product as an alternative to the highly- processed items available. “When treats are homemade, like my biscotti and pizzelle, I can control what goes in them and feel good about having them. I like offering them so others can enjoy them and can rest assured that they are free from additives, preservatives, colors and artificial ingredients,” she said. The recipe was handed down from her Sicilian family – Fioravanti’s mother’s father is from Sciacca, Sicily. Her maternal grandmother’s family was from Sciacca as well. “My grandmother always had a canister with pizzelle or biscotti in her pantry that she would offer to us. When my mother was growing up, my grandmother would devote one day a week to baking. She was a fabulous baker who would make up her own recipes.

My mother, my aunts, my sister – we all use her recipes,” Fioravanti said. Asked what is different about her biscotti and pizzelle, Fioravanti replied, “Just about everything.” They are made in small batches with only 7 ingredients, using only real butter, nothing artificial, and no preservatives. “The store-bought products, and even at some bakeries, may use oil or margarine, preservatives, and licorice flavors. We use only anise seed and anise extract, this is the authentic Sicilian way,” Fioravanti said. The biscotti are hand cut and twice-baked to achieve a delicate, crisp texture that is not too hard or crumbly. “The flavor is subtle and just right, not overpowering like some brands. The pizzelle are the perfect thickness, texture and flavor, not thick and soft like some varieties. I have received feedback from different customers that Baker's Lane Biscotti are better than other Italian bakeries that they have frequented,” Fioravanti said. Currently her biscotti and pizzelle are both anise flavored, which is the traditional recipe. “Last Christmas I had requests for chocolate, peppermint and chocolate-dipped biscotti, which I made. They all sold well, so they may become holiday staples. I also plan to make almond biscotti, as it seems to be a popular flavor that people are familiar with. I would like to test gluten-free recipes as I have had requests for that as well,” said Fioravanti. Fioravanti lives in Ludlow and bakes out of the kitchen of her church – the First Church of Monson, UCC. “It was such a joy to have an out-of-the-box idea like that be met with such enthusiasm and excitement from my pastor, Reverend Peter Johnston, the trustees, the treasurer and the Outreach Committee. The members of the congregation have been so supportive, buying and placing orders for boxes and party trays. Since they allow me to bake in the certified kitchen, I give 10 percent of all my sales back to the church as an ongoing fundraiser,” she said. Baker's Lane Biscotti can be found at the Northampton Farmers' Market in the Northampton Senior Center on 67 Conz St. every other Saturday starting January 4.
Orders can also be placed on the website bakerslanebiscotti.com or by email at bakerslanebiscotti@gmail.com.

ODIN’S KEEP AXE HOUSE I s it a sport, a competition, a game, or all three? “It” refers to axe throwing, and although it’s been around for hundreds of years, it is becoming a popular pastime as axe throwing houses continue to spread throughout the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom. Currently, there are only about 200 such establishments in the United States, and the newest is located in Enfield, Connecticut. Odin’s Keep Axe House just held its Grand Opening celebration in January, complete with Bear’s Smokehouse Barbeque serving food and radio station ROCK 102 WAQY on-site for added entertainment.
Described as “an exciting, family oriented entertainment center that specializes in axe throwing” by Merle McKenzie, one of the three owners, Odin’s Keep also offers an arcade area. In addition to the throwing pits, guests may also have fun playing pool, foosball, the world’s largest Pac-Man, Connect4, air hockey and more in the arcade area. There is even a Viking chess set available on one of the custom made tables for those who desire a more cerebral pursuit. For those who want to take part in the axe throwing action, making prior reservations on-line is highly recommended. Before entering the caged-off pit area, which contains
the wooden targets you’ll be aiming for, you will have an instructional and safety lesson from your assigned “axe-master,” who will stay with you in the pit at all times. In addition to overseeing the safety of everyone in their group, the axe-master will also conduct games, which “makes the experience a lot of fun, and much more interesting than just throwing an axe at a piece of wood,” according to McKenzie. An average pit holds up to 12 people, although only two are actually in the throwing pit at a time. According to one of several YouTube videos on how to throw an axe, success depends more on form and function rather than on strength or power. The owners of Odin’s Keep, Glenn Perra, Guy Marino, and McKenzie, GOLOCALMAGAZINES.COM 31
have undertaken previous enterprises together before. McKenzie and Perra are life-long friends who were involved in business ventures previously, including several CrossFit gyms in Connecticut, and another axe throwing bar in Newington named Montana Nights. The third owner, Marino, met McKenzie at one of his gyms, and eventually became involved with the axe throwing venture. In fact, he and another friend hand-built much of the furniture in Odin’s Keep, including the 17 foot long Viking boat bar, in keeping with the overall Viking theme that they chose. Each throwing pit has a unique custom made round table for the players’ drinks and snacks, and there are numerous handmade picnic style tables located throughout the establishment. Wall murals, carved figures, a throne complete with props, and even the carefully chosen lights, all add to the theme. Odin, the most powerful god in Viking mythology, has taken on many shapes on various occasions, but is always pictured with only one eye. That is because he sacrificed his other eye to gain wisdom in order to save the world. Odin’s Keep serves canned and bottled beers, wine and soft drinks, and has packaged snacks available. Patrons are allowed to bring in their own food, or have something delivered to enjoy at the picnic tables located throughout the establishment. There is also a semiprivate room, referred to as Valhalla, with its own throwing pits and seating area, which may be rented out for private parties and/or corporate events. In Norse mythology, the god Odin housed the worthy dead in Valhalla, where they “lived” in a style which was the envy of any Viking warrior. The owners are proud of their beer selection, which includes popular national brands, and local craft beers, such as selections from the Maine Beer Company, Happy Treez India pale ale, and Einstok, an Icelandic toasted porter. They also carry various brands of mead, wine, and apparently on occasion the “blood of their enemies!” 32 GO LOCAL FEBRUARY 2020
A group of friends who were part of a busy night recently were enthusiastic in their praise. “It’s really nice in here…it’s an awesome environment,” said Kim Wiesner. Her friend, Kim Humiston, added “getting the axe to stick in the target is harder than it looks, but super fun!” Another patron called their outing “a night with friends away from the kids,” and Stacie Zimowski called the endeavor a “fun challenge.” Enfield mayor Michael Ludwick says of the new enterprise, “we welcome them into town, and we certainly wish them the very best of luck and many years of success here in the Town of Enfield. I personally look forward in the near future to “giving it a throw!” The owners pride themselves on “safety, the thought and planning they put into the décor, and how much fun they have tried to make the experience.” As Glenn Perra says, “We are now the proud owners of Odin’s Keep Axe House! We look forward to introducing the public to our one-of-a kind décor and an amazing ‘axe-perience.’”
Hours are: Monday Closed Tuesday to Thursday 4PM to 10PM Friday 4PM to Midnight Saturday 1:15PM to Midnight Sunday 1:15PM to 8PM A 75 minute session of axe throwing is $25.00 per person, plus tax and gratuity for the “axe-master.” Arcade games are pay as you go.
Odin’s Keep is located at 630 Enfield Street, in the Enfield Plaza in Enfield. Website is odinskeepaxehouse.com. Phone is 860-776-0006.

Tipsy Paint Brush
and Kil’n It Pottery Studio N ow there is a new way to learn how to paint or take a lesson on the pottery wheel, paint ceramics or sculpt clay. At the Tipsy Paint Brush and Kil’n It Pottery Studio, which opened its doors in Enfield last November, patrons are bringing in their beer or wine along with any other soft drinks and food to “add to their inspiration” as their website says. The BYOB establishment is the brainchild of Wendy Markham, who owns and operates the business part of the studio along with instructing the Tipsy Paint Brush parties. Her lookalike daughter instructs the pottery under Kil’n It. Before opening their doors late last
year, Markham operated Tipsy Paint Brush on a traveling basis for six years, holding “paint and sip” parties at restaurants, halls, and homes. “I was tired of lugging all of my supplies around to different locations, and I had always dreamed of having my own art studio for people to come to instead. The timing was right. My daughter, who had been working at another pottery studio for the past eight years, decided she wanted to go out on her own with me,” she said. Her original idea to create Tipsy Paint Brush was born years ago when some friends asked her to attend a “paint and sip” party that was offered by one of the large paint party franchises.
GOLOCALMAGAZINES.COM 35
“I fell in love with it. What a great concept to attend an instructed painting classes in a restaurant where you can sip on cocktails with friends. I was in need of a part-time job at the time to cover student loans for my two daughters and myself. So, I invested about $500 in art supplies to get started,” Markham said. With her background in graphic design and 37 years of experience behind her, Markham created a website and came up with the name Tipsy Paint Brush. After contacting some local restaurants, she started scheduling parties and promoting them on Facebook. “There was no transaction between myself and the restaurants. I brought business to them, and they provided a space to conduct my business. Before long, I had quite a following and customer base,” Markham said. Of course, you couldn’t do all of this without first having an artistic flair. After receiving an art scholarship from high school, Markham studied communication design and illustration at New England School of Art & Design in Boston, and at Parsons School of Design in New York City. “After leaving college and starting my career in graphic design, I never had time to paint or draw. While my two daughters were growing up, I enjoyed becoming a Girl Scout leader for both of their troops. As their leader, I offered a lot of arts and crafts that their schools were not able to. This was especially fulfilling to me….to be able to bring out their inner artist when some of them believed they had no artistic talent. When I started instructing “paint and sip” parties years later, I experienced that same fulfillment after hearing customers say that they never thought they could create a painting so beautiful,” Markham said. She explained that when her daughters, Melanie and Chelsea, were young, they would go to the local pottery studio to paint ceramics. When Melanie became old enough to look for her first job, the pottery studio hired her on a part time basis to help out. She learned a lot and quickly became an instructor on the pottery wheel, and eventually the manager of the studio. “Melanie has studied under some very talented master potters, and will soon become 36 GO LOCAL FEBRUARY 2020
a master potter herself,” Markham said. Melanie has also studied early childhood education in college with a focus in art therapy. She specializes in working with students who have special needs or challenges. “Our studio is very open and fosters a relaxing atmosphere where it’s not overstimulating for some people who have difficulties being overwhelmed in public situations. We are also completely handicap accessible,” Markham said. When it came time to search for her own studio to work out of, Makham was well aware that you couldn’t have a “paint and sip” studio without the “sip” part, especially with the name Tipsy Paint Brush. “I looked for a location for our studio in Massachusetts, but every town has different regulations for BYOBs. Connecticut has none throughout the state. So, Enfield is where we found our home. Customers are welcome to bring their own beer and wine to add to their inspiration,” Markham said, noting hard liquor is not allowed by state law. No experience is necessary for any of the events held at the studio, whether pottery or painting. “We provide step by step instruction with hands on assistance,” Markham said. “Our goal is for each person to be proud of what they have created and to find their inner artist. I can’t tell you how fulfilling it is to hear someone say, ‘I have never done this before. I can’t believe that I made this,’” Markham said. And you don’t need to bring a thing with you, other than your food and libations. “We supply everything you need to paint and create pottery, right down to the aprons,” Markham said. She noted customers are welcome to bring their own food and beverages, including wine or beer. There
are also plenty of nearby restaurants from which to order take-out and they have menus for their customers to order from if they want it delivered to the studio. Liquor stores are nearby, too, for beer and wine. When coming up with ideas for classes and paint parties, Markham said she tries to keep in touch with what is trending at the moment. “Gnomes, cardinals, owls, llamas, sea turtles, fairies, mermaids, unicorns….I get a lot of inspiration from Pinterest, too. Then I create my own style into the paintings,” she said. She noted her daughter is always creating new sculptures to offer as classes. “The gnomes have really taken off. Now the owl planters are super popular. I’m always excited to see what she will come up with next. With Melanie’s experience, she knows what people are looking for. Most people associate the pottery wheel with the movie ‘Ghost,’ so we offer a date night special. But, each person would have their own pottery wheel. It’s great to see more men getting involved in art. They are more interested in getting their hands messy with clay versus painting on a canvas,” Markham said. To learn more about the many paint parties you can book from painting on glass or canvas to kid’s palette parties, or for the many paint events scheduled each month, visit tipsypaintbrushparties.com or call 860-698-6161.
