FROM THE MANAGING EDITOR . G. MICHAEL DOBBS
For some, February is a pretty bleak month. Consider this assessment by Shannon Wiersbitzky, “When God was making the months, I think February was a mistake, like a burp. There it was, small, dark, and prickly. It had absolutely no redeeming qualities.” Anna Quindlen wrote, “February is a suitable month for dying. Everything around is dead, the trees black and frozen so that the appearance of green shoots two months hence seems preposterous, the ground hard and cold, the snow dirty, the winter hateful, hanging on too long.” Wow. For me, February is a month that is significant in so many ways. It could be the last time for significant winter weather. It is the month for the formal holiday of affection. It is the month set aside to commemorate the history of African-Americans. February is typically a month during which we hold our collective breath. If we can get through the anticipated last gasps of winter, the start of spring looms in March. Will we have some final storms to the winter season? Sub-zero temperatures? Although we all know it’s theater, we none-the-less pay attention to Punxsutawney Phil in Pennsylvania in the hopes the large rodent actually does predict an end to winter and the approach of an early spring. I’m not sure of his accuracy rate despite all of the attention we pay him. According to information published by the American Journal of Folklore, “The observance of Groundhog Day in the United States first occurred in German communities in Pennsylvania, according to known records. The earliest mention of Groundhog Day is an entry on Feb. 2, 1840, in the diary of James L. Morris of Morgantown, in Pennsylvania Dutch Country, according to the book on the subject by Don Yoder. This was a Welsh enclave but the diarist was commenting on his neighbors who were of German stock. Apparently in Germany, all eyes were focused on badgers. If the badger went out of his or her burrow and saw a shadow there would be four more weeks of winter. The less aggressive groundhog proved to be an American substitute for German immigrants. Despite the fact the average groundhog has no power of prediction, the event continues to be a winter tradition, but as Bill Murray’s characters notes in the movie “Groundhog Day”, “Pitiful, a thousand people freezing their butts off to worship a rat.” This issue of Go Local focuses on another big event in February: Valentine’s Day. It’s both a joyous celebration of love and a test of imagination. After all what could be easier – and lazier – than picking up some roses and a box of candy at a convenience store? The holiday calls for something more than that. If flowers are part of your plan, go with an arrangement with meaning and for that see a local florist such as Vine and Ivy Floral Design in Suffield, CT, profiled in this issue. For activities, we have several ideas that are different and fun from the Easthampton Winterfest to a wine and macaron pairing event. Although the pandemic colors all of our activities, still go to your favorite restaurant for a memorable meal. We have a suggestion in this issue as well as a story about Four Seasons by the Lake in Stafford, CT. February doesn’t have to be as bleak as the weather can make it seem. After all, John Steinbeck wrote, “What good is the warmth of summer, without the cold of winter to give it sweetness?” - G. Michael Dobbs, Managing Editor 6 GO LOCAL FEBRUARY 2021

Saga Communications Inc. Previously: WCMF, 95X, TK99, The Fan, WBOS & more 13-time NYSBA award winner
What town do you currently reside in? Enfield, CT. Once again a Connecticut resident for the first time since I attended Wesleyan University in Middletown in the 80s.
How did you get started as a disc jockey?
I played pro soccer for 3 seasons after college as a goalkeeper for the Buffalo Stallions and the Rochester Flash. A young woman I knew worked for a rock radio station in Rochester that was trying to put together a morning show team. I auditioned and got the job.
Favorite kinds of music? Rock and pop
When did you join Lazer 99.3/98.5 Springfield?
I joined the Saga Communications family on November 2, 2020.
When can listeners tune in to your radio show(s)? I host the morning show on Active Rock WLZX/Springfield from 5:30-10 AM on weekdays AND I also voice-track the midday shift 10AM-2PM Central for WKLH, our company’s Classic Rock station in Milwaukee.
What is your favorite thing about being a radio disc jockey? I’m not qualified to do anything else for a living! I’m actually kind of introverted, but this work has come naturally to me and improved my social skills “in the real world.”

on Taylor has always prided himself on providing the best dining experience for those he has served over the years from customer service to an excellent meal. Today as owner of Four Seasons by the Lake in Stafford, that goal is as important as ever to him after leaving his job as manager at Basil’s in town and purchasing the restaurant in January last year. “It was a difficult decision to make that separation, but it had been a goal of mine to someday have my own restaurant. My wife Leanna and I met while working together at a restaurant and we have taken on the Four Seasons by the Lake as a family restaurant, which is the vibe you feel when entering our doors where some of our clientele have been dining for over 40 years,” Taylor said. “We have been fortunate to staff our restaurant with some of the best wait staff and bartenders, and we have an amazing
group of regular customers. So, we’ve been able to build a business that has managed to stay somewhat afloat through the pandemic,” he added never realizing what challenges would soon be thrown at him because of COVID-19. A look at the Four Seasons’ menu offers a taste-tempting selection of appetizers, soups and salads, burgers and wraps, and various dinner entrees. Diners can start off their meal with some fried calamari or mozzarella, Philadelphia egg rolls, loaded potato skins, nachos, fried Brussel sprouts, or a traditional shrimp cocktail among other treats to choose from. Entrees include bone in pork chop, penne carbonara, NY strip, Ritz crusted cod, apple butter salmon, chicken parmesan, butternut squash ravioli, a traditional turkey dinner with all the trimmings, and still more to choose from. And there is a kids menu for youngsters 12 and under. GOLOCALMAGAZINES.COM 13
“We have been changing up the menu to fit the seasons as a way to identify the items that are most enjoyed by our diners. We are always looking for new and fresh ideas to please our guests. Monday through Friday, for example, we offer half-price appetizers from 4-6 p.m. We are now adding breakfast on Saturday and Sunday beginning at 8 a.m., and we have been receiving very good feedback about our new breakfast menu. We also offer family-style takeout meals that have been helping families to cope during the pandemic,” Taylor said. The restaurant owner noted he believes it is their location that sets them apart from others. “In the summer, we offer a large deck with seating overlooking the beautiful lake and beach that is Sun Valley. Beach members and campers are a big part of our clientele, but being open to the public offers that view to other guests who would not have ever known this gem of ours was here,” Taylor said. “We also have a banquet facility on the hill that is separate from the restaurant, where we cater weddings, Jack and Jill parties, showers and corporate functions. The venue seats 400 people comfortably and we offer full-service wedding and party planning. In the summer, there is a farmer’s market on the property that is also open to the public and makes for a nice night to walk around and follow up with dinner and a cocktail on the deck,” he added. When it comes to handling any special events this year, Taylor noted he is in constant contact with the local health department and is updated weekly on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines in regards to the pandemic. “Each event will be handled in accordance with those guidelines,” he said While the New England winter doesn’t allow for outdoor dining and various other activities, Taylor said “there is always something happening at Four Seasons.” “If you like tacos, then Tuesday is your night. On Wednesdays, we have a Trivia Night to test your skills. Thursdays have grown into a town favorite with DJ bingo, where you get a bingo card with songs listed on it. As the DJ plays a short clip, you mark your card for bingo. It’s free, it’s fun, and we have great prizes such as gift cards to the restaurant for both Bingo and Trivia Nights,” Taylor said. “For the month of February, we will be offering special Valentine’s Day dinners by reservation, and for the Super Bowl, people can come in and watch the game on our big screen television 14 GO LOCAL FEBRUARY 2021
while enjoying half-price appetizers, 50-cent wings and $2.50 drafts,” Taylor said. While nothing is a given during the pandemic, as spring and summer arrive, Taylor said he plans to return to having a car show on the hill, as well as other activities such as corn hole tournaments. “Music on the beach was a real favorite last year with local bands entertaining guests. We’re also a destination for motorcycle enthusiasts and we are always willing to host fundraisers when asked,” he said. As for operating for the first year as owner during the unprecedented coronavirus pandemic, Taylor said he had to make some adjustments as March began. “We created takeout options for families who weren’t going out to restaurants, including full turkey dinners for Thanksgiving. This was something new for us. We also had to adjust staff without letting people go. And it was a challenge working with different distributors to make sure that we could get product for our menu items and to keep things consistent for our customers,” he said. But the pandemic also offered Taylor a silver lining of sorts with the shutdown, when he was able to renovate their dining hall, bar and deck without disturbing customers. Taylor shared his philosophy of the restaurant business. “You have to offer as much as you can to attract customers to your place. When someone new comes to your restaurant, it’s important that they feel welcome. People have a lot of choices and it’s my goal to have Four Seasons be the choice for amazing service and a delicious food experience,” he said. Four Seasons by the Lake is located on 51 Old Springfield Road in Stafford Springs, CT. Hours are Monday through Friday from noon to 10 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. “Our hours will be extended once the restrictions are lifted for curfew during the pandemic,” Taylor said.

re you the type who orders flowers only for special occasions such as Valentine’s Day or Mother’s Day, or do you treat yourself and others to a beautiful arrangement “just because?” Either way, check out Vine and Ivy Floral Design (formerly K & P Flowers) in Suffield, Connecticut. Erin Ivy Fletcher has owned the shop for 2 ½ years, and she feels that they are the best every day, full service florist in the area. “We provide a wide array of services and delivery options to the Northern Connecticut region and beyond,” she says. She proudly notes that Vine and Ivy took 3rd place last year in the Hartford Courant’s “Best of…” Readers’ Poll, and also won 1st place in a “Rooms in Bloom” competition sponsored by the Hillstead Museum in Farmington, Connecticut.
Fletcher, who has a Bachelor’s Degree in Horticulture with a concentration in landscape design, worked at a floral wholesale distributor and was a sales person for the whole Connecticut region. After 20 years in the flower business, she came to the conclusion that “in order to be a floral designer I would never be able to move up in any company unless I owned it. So I decided to buy a flower shop, and had been waiting for the right opportunity,” which came along in July, 2018. She is assisted in her business by floral designers Brenda Deming and Bethany Pinkstaff. Fletcher sources her flowers from all over the world, including Holland, Thailand, South America, and Africa. When asked if she had a personal favorite flower, she answered, “the peony, because
GOLOCALMAGAZINES.COM 19
it is big and bold and breathtaking, and can be so many different colors and shades, as well as carry an intoxicatingly delightful scent.” If you are fluent in floriography, or the language of flowers, you might know that peonies can have different meanings in different cultures, but in general symbolize prosperity, happy life, good luck and love. For a long time, they were exclusively the flowers of Chinese emperors. Someone wishing to convey a message of devotion and friendship might choose to include alstroemeria in their bouquet, while orange lilies speak of hatred! Although Fletcher doesn’t regularly design arrangements with floriography in mind because “there are so many different meanings with colors and such,” she will do so if it’s important to the customer, for instance, at a funeral if the family requests it. One of the busiest times of the year for florists is this month…because of Valentine’s Day, of course! Other especially busy times are the month of May, with Mother’s Day, graduations, proms, and weddings; and also the Christmas season. Fletcher shared that women do most of the ordering on a daily basis, but men order flowers for the women in their lives on major holidays. Like many businesses during COVID, her shop lost most of its event business, and saw an overall decrease in the amount of money people are spending. The shop is currently offering a selection of winter floral arrangements, as well as a “designer’s choice” arrangement, using the freshest flowers they have in stock, which hovers around 30 different types of flowers on any given day. Browse their website to see samples of the many choices available. Fletcher says it takes 5 to 15 minutes to assemble an average flower arrangement, and hours for larger pieces for events or competitions. 20 GO LOCAL FEBRUARY 2021
A typical workday for Fletcher includes “the delivery/pick up of fresh product at a wholesaler in the morning, processing the flowers, answering phone calls for new orders, making sure each arrangement is completed, loading the delivery van, making the deliveries and finally ending the day with delivery confirmations.” Outside of a typical workday, however Fletcher “always like a challenge.” For instance, she says, “a couple of years ago we had never made a floral wall. Now we have made them and created them in a more efficient and lightweight manner.” They attached hundreds of flowers to a piece of insulation board for a wedding, which was a major statement piece for the event. Another challenge is “orchestrating 200-300 deliveries per holiday...that needs to be executed with precision.” It’s all worth it, Fletcher adds, “when we see people’s faces light up when they see what we have created for them based on a simple conversation or their vision of their event.” When you are lucky enough to receive a fresh flower arrangement, or purchase one for yourself, a tip from Fletcher to make them last is to change the water each day; if you have flower food put the appropriate amount in the water; and be sure to give the stems a fresh cut with every change of the water. Enjoy!

verything old is new again. One man’s trash is another man’s treasure. Those two popular phrases are what led to Re-Inspired - Furniture, Décor and Design in Southwick where as their website states: “Browse through the shoppe’s unique selection of vintage, antique and new merchandise inside our cozy space and get your own great design ideas off the ground.” A number of factors inspired owner Sharon Ensign to “re-inspire” furniture and décor. “I’ve always loved creative things. Years back we purchased a home with some outdated furnishings. Rather than going out and searching for replacements, I transformed what was already there by re-finishing or painting some pieces and using some in different ways. I got hooked re-purposing everything after realizing I didn’t have to spend thousands of dollars. I loved thinking outside the box and using these things in different ways.” Ensign said. “For example, you can take an antique bed frame and transform it into wall art, or a sign or even a bench. As for décor, you can take an old copper kettle, take the top off of it and put a plant in it, add some decorative farmhouse beads or pearls spilling out of it, and it creates something more interesting with different textures. Architectural salvage like old doors, windows or corbels are items that can be used to create unique décor as well,” she added. Ensign said customers have described to her what it is like walking into her store. “Customers often comment that they feel inspired when they walk through the door of my shoppe. Having so much to look at, they are drawn to various things because of the variety of colors, textures and stories of each piece. Most of the time when you walk into a retail store, you will see racks or displays with multiples of the same items for sale like GOLOCALMAGAZINES.COM 23
6 of the same mirrors, for example. For the most part, customers are seeing one-of-a-kind furniture, décor, and architectural salvage in my shop.” Ensign said. “I display everything in color stories or vignettes of furniture mixed with décor…..some of it antique, some of it vintage and some new. It is an ever- changing eclectic mix that ensures there will be something for everyone that comes through the door,” she added. Ensign credits her mom for leading her to create Re-Inspired. “My mother always saw the beauty in everything. She loved beautiful things and she taught me to appreciate them. When she passed away from cancer 5 years ago, it was a reminder that life is short and you need to do what you love because tomorrow is never promised. Could I really take all of these things that I loved to do and create a business around them? With my husband’s support and encouragement, Re-Inspired was set in motion. It was terrifying to leave my job as a high school guidance counselor, but something (someone) propelled me to take that leap,” she said. It took Ensign two years to get it all going, opening her shop in December 2018. “I wanted to find the right location, a charming and inviting space with a storefront that was homelike. I dressed up the outside of the building I found and added some 24 GO LOCAL FEBRUARY 2021
architectural features to make it eye catching and even more inviting. I was so fortunate to find this unbelievable location with a busy road leading into Connecticut, so I attract customers from both states,” she said. Ensign fills her store with antique and vintage pieces she acquires at estate sales and flea markets and works with a variety of wholesalers to purchase new items to “mix in with some of the old.” “The whole purpose is having a range of things that appeal to everyone. Someone might come in and not necessarily like antiques, but then see one alongside something new and think, ‘That could work for me,’” she said. Ensign said people are re-inspiring furniture, décor and their own rooms for a number of reasons. “Because COVID-19 has resulted in people spending more time at home, I believe it is encouraging them to want to get re-inspired. We seem to have more down time now to allow us to work on those projects we have put off for years. Because we are spending more time at home and looking at that same dresser or table day after day, we may find ourselves saying, ‘I don’t like that piece anymore, what could I do to change things up?’ Your home should be a reflection of you and all the things you like, colors you love, textures you like, all of those things. So, why would we not want to surround ourselves with the things that we love where we are spending most of our time these days? Another reason to re-inspire furniture and décor is that it is taking much longer today to order new furniture for your home because of distribution challenges due to the pandemic,” she said. Among other things, re-inspiring is also cost effective. “Instead of spending thousands of dollars on new furniture pieces, you can buy a pint of paint and a paintbrush for $20 and with minimal effort, transform a piece of furniture or other décor. You can totally recreate something with paint and it’s really amazing to see that transformation. Take a standard florist vase for example. You can paint it so that it looks like an old world clay pot, rather than tossing it in the trash” Ensign said. “You might get sick of looking at something in one of your rooms, but for someone else it might be a new piece that they could add and enjoy in their home. That’s how things come into my shop, and it’s also about the environment and keeping these items out of GOLOCALMAGAZINES.COM 25
the landfill. Also, think about that garage where you have stored Uncle Joe’s chair or grandma’s table. They might not fit your décor, but you are hanging onto them for sentimental reasons. There are ways to incorporate them into your home by just thinking out of the box. Your childhood twin headboard that you have been holding onto - you can clean it up, maybe add a little paint and hang it on the wall as art,” she added. As for your own paint projects when reinspiring something, Ensign suggests using Fusion Mineral Paint, which she carries in her shop. “Fusion is a fabulous do-it-yourself paint that is user friendly and allows you to transform something with minimal prep required,” she said. Although limited now by the coronavirus pandemic, Ensign has in the past shared her expertise with others through painting workshops at her shop and design consultation, which often involves her going into someone’s home and helping them re-inspire their rooms. “All will hopefully return when we can gather together safely once again,” Ensign said. In addition to Fusion Mineral Paint, furniture and décor, Ensign also stocks Antique CandleWorks soy candles, local Windycrest Farm goat milk soaps, and handmade pillows and gifts. Re-Inspired is located on 365 College Highway in Southwick. Hours are Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Monday through Wednesday by appointment or by chance. “I’m very flexible and realize that sometimes my hours don’t work for everyone. Some people, in fact, prefer to shop alone with no other customers in the store. While I’m officially open only three days a week, you will often find me in my workshop painting while we’re closed. So, if you are driving by and want to stop in, you can always call the store to catch me by chance,” Ensign said.

ith all the time spent at home recently, and with the possibility of entertaining again on the horizon, many of us have been thinking about sprucing up our home’s exterior. Are you longing to update your home with new siding, expand a deck or add a porch, or replace drafty windows and doors? You obviously want to work with someone who has the experience, skills, and commitment to quality that will bring your plans to fruition and make you proud to be the king or queen of your castle. Is a small, family owned business with a reputation for excellence and say…100 years of experience…one that you would consider for the job? Then look no further than Harry A. Starr and Son, celebrating their 100th year in business! Back in 1920, Harry founded the company, which was eventually taken over by his son, Robert, who passed away in 2000. Robert’s son, Jeff, is the current owner, and he is grooming his daughter and son-in-law, Ashley Starr and Patrick Frechette, to take over the company when he decides to retire. That would bring the company into its 4th generation of being family owned and operated. Ashley handles the marketing and social media side of GOLOCALMAGAZINES.COM 29
the business, and is also instrumental in “growing” the company, as she and Patrick are expecting a baby boy this month! “Other than the family aspect,” Ashley says, “we have been extremely lucky to have amazingly talented and dedicated employees over our 100 years in business. We have always been, and continue to be, an extremely small company. Currently, Steve Lindman and Arron Wrann have worked for us the longest, and we are very thankful for their hard work and commitment to Harry A. Starr & Son.” The company specializes in all things exterior, including siding, roofing, gutters, doors, windows, porches, railings, hatchways, and awnings. “Harry always took pride in high quality work that was done a certain way. He taught this to his son Robert who in turn taught this to Jeff, who is now teaching Pat. So it has always been the “Harry A.” way of doing things. At pretty much any job, you would, and still will, find one of the Starr family members making sure that each job is getting individual attention and taking the time to get things right,” says Ashley. When asked if everyone “learned on the job,” the answer was yes. The family 30 GO LOCAL FEBRUARY 2021
added that “we do attend manufacturer trainings and seminars when we begin working with a new product to learn the proper installation techniques. We like to think that our commitment to quality work and attention to detail has been passed down from generation to generation. We always strive to ensure that our work is high quality just like everything was done in the old days. We have been extremely lucky to have many extremely talented carpenters and tradespeople over the years who have brought their own talents to the table…All of our carpenters are very wellrounded and can work on any of our projects. When a certain job comes up, there may be one person that has extensive experience with a certain aspect, so we try to draw on the combined skills and knowledge. Our best solutions always come when we approach things as a team.” Ashley added, “Harry, Robert and Jeff were, and are, all known for their extreme honesty when it comes to any exterior home repair project. We have been in business for 100 years now because we are lucky enough to have amazing customers who come back, time and time again. People seem to really value our honest opinion on all types of exterior home repair projects. Jeff can offer so many years of advice on projects of every type because he has seen them, worked on them, and knows pretty much every product out there. We can give advice on not only the project that the client might have in mind, but our firsthand experience with the companies making the windows, doors, shingles, and so on. We have dealt with them all and seen which ones hold up best over time. The nice thing about our company is that we have been around for so long that GOLOCALMAGAZINES.COM 31
clients can trust that we are going to be there for them if any questions come up. Jeff has never been one for sales pitches or upsells, he just likes to give his honest opinion of the products, how products hold up over time, and really tries to go above and beyond to meet the clients’ needs/vision.” When asked some job specific questions about siding and decks, the response was “we definitely do mostly vinyl siding. It seems to be the most popular in this area and is also the most affordable and cost effective option. Plygem (Mastic) siding is one that we use the most often. People seem to really like their color choices and how they hold up over time. There are about 3 dozen great color options that people can consider when they are thinking about updating the look of their home. With regards to decks, Trex and other composite decking are definitely the most popular choices, but we did do a lot of pressure treated decks this year, as well. Composite decking options seem to be the favorite, when budget allows, because of the color options, the fact that they hold up incredibly well over time, and require no maintenance by the homeowner. We always make sure to work with the customer on whatever works best for their budget and vision.” A typical work day at Harry A. Starr & Son, according to the family, is “get up bright and early to get materials and meet with the crews to get the day started. As the crews work on their projects, Jeff will be answering phone calls from customers, vendors and the crews, grabbing needed material and troubleshooting. When the job is done, crews will get the job site cleaned up, head back to the shop to unload and pack up for the next day. When the typical work day ends, and on weekends, Jeff does estimates, speaks with customers, works with distributors and does many of the office aspects of owning your own business. We love what we do and our loyal customers make it all worth it. We would like to think that Harry and Bob would be very proud to know that we are now celebrating 100 years of Harry A. Starr & Son. We love serving our local community and look forward to continuing this family tradition for years to come.”
