We are surrounded by artwork. When you step into a restaurant or even a doctor’s office, it’s almost certain that art in some form is decorating the walls. We see artwork every day and may not even realize it. But what if art was more than just a painting?

FROM THE EDITOR . STEPHANIE TROMBLEY
Every November, I take time to reflect on the year before the cold, snowy winter begins. I gaze at the glimmering shades of reds and golds painting the decaying leaves, and ponder all that I have to be thankful for in my life. While my mother scurries around her small kitchen preparing enough food to feed us for the next week, I take in the aroma of her green bean and cheddar broccoli casseroles, listen to my Grampie talk endlessly about anything from television to sports and laugh at the fact that my mother is still displaying the turkey candle I purchased for her when I was just a child. Gazing out the window, I feel a childlike wonder. Suddenly, I am not thinking about work, bills or holiday shopping, but enjoying the beauty of nature and the happiness the holidays bring. This November is particularly special, as I will celebrate my 25th birthday on the 13th. It’s a strange, yet heartwarming experience to realize that my life has officially transitioned out of school years and living with my parents and into a whole new stage, experiencing adulthood and making dreams I held as a child come true. Even in just the last year, I have experienced the splendor of renting my own apartment and filling it with Halloween decorations year round, living with the man I love, and adopting my own goofball cat. While I look fondly on my past, I am excited to have seen so much change and development in my life, and I truly have a lot to be thankful for this year. In this issue, I happily listened to the stories of others in my community transitioning into new phases of life. Jamie Hein, a recent college graduate, is pursuing her dream of becoming a game artist. Andrea Chasen, after years of pondering the idea, has become a published fiction author, and plans to continue building on her passion. Especially For You’s Terese Napoli shows us that your life can change at any age and Alex Le Fevre brings his passions to life by being featured at his first ever exhibit. It’s enlightening to watch as those around me create their own worlds that bring them joy. I am extremely thankful to each person in our November issue who graciously shared his or her stories with me. With each new story I hear during my time with Go Local, I always learn something new about life and following dreams. I hope this month, our readers take a moment to sit back and relish in the beauty of the harvest season. Indulge in the delicious foods offered to you, remember to tell those you love how much you appreciate them, and have a brilliant holiday. Whether you celebrate Thanksgiving or not, it is important to take a moment to appreciate the blessings that you have in life, and to plan for an incredible year ahead. Who knows? This may just be the season that you follow your dreams, or watch them grow.

THE
OF JAMIE
HEIN
! STEPHANIE TROMBLEY LEO PILARES
amie Hein is no stranger to adventure. Growing up in an era of video games that brought the Nintendo 64 gaming console to kids, Jamie has adored games her entire life and the journeys that each one take her on. When Jamie wanted to study performing arts locally, fate had other plans, leading her to embark on the greatest adventure she has experienced thus far. Leaving her childhood home in Somers, Connecticut and studying digital media in Portland, Maine has created an adventure in her life reminiscent of Link’s journey through Hyrule in her favorite series, the Legend of Zelda. As much fun as she has had playing games, she never imagined that she would become a video game artist herself. “I stumbled into it. I was always a very artsy kid and had paint kits and took art classes.” Jamie initially wanted to go to college for performing arts, but pursuing the major did not work out after applying to schools. While performing arts didn’t seem to be in the stars, Jamie no doubt had a vibrant creative side that she was excited to utilize no matter what. She enrolled in classes aimed toward digital media. She decided to try them and loved it from the first minute she started. “It was very refreshing and fun. I thought it was the coolest thing. I had experience in loving video games, but it was so cool to put it together for myself.
I stumbled into it like Alice into the rabbit hole. I fell into this by accident.” Jamie has followed the path to a career in video game design and has never looked back. In May, Jamie graduated from Maine College of Art with a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts in Digital Media. Though she just recently graduated, the work Jamie conducted in during her time as a student has lead to incredible work. During her time at Maine College of Art, Jamie worked as an Intern Artist and 3D Modeler for Chickadee Games. She modeled and created 2D assets as a part of game projects such as “Beartopia” and “Steambirds Alliance” for Spry Fox Games and “Tooth and Tail” for Pocketwatch Games. “Steambirds Alliance” is currently in production and “Beartopia” is available for Google’s Daydream Virtual Reality platform, but is still being developed for computers. “Tooth and Tail” was released in September 2017. Jamie also contributed concept and icon art for Chickadee Games during her internship. Jamie is thankful that she had the opportunity to learn alongside Adam deGrandis, owner of Chickadee Games and Maine College of Art professor and alumni. Jamie shared, “He took me on as a junior. He’s great; I still bother him as a mentor from time to time.” GOLOCALMAGAZINES.COM 11
Jamie also worked on a project called the Spillage Campaign alongside five Maine College of Art Digital Media major students as a Character Designer, Background Artist, and in marketing. The project was a part of a class assignment that took off and represented the talents of herself and her classmates. The nonprofit project focused on fighting the construction of oil pipes in the ocean and cleaning oil. The team involved 350 Maine, a movement local to Maine College of Arts dedicated to climate crisis. As Jamie described, “We created this whole old-style war movie animation trailer to push their organization and push their project. We were able to team up with 350 Maine. It was a big step for us and I am proud of my colleagues.” The Spillage Campaign included a narrative based hook animation teaser, informational pamphlet, website, and movie posters. Jamie designed a main character, illustrated animation backgrounds, edited the voiceover and was the lead on marketing for the project against oil pipelines and oil spills. The extensive efforts of she and her classmates cumulated into a professional final product that brought attention to the environment. She received the Golden Gary Award for Best in Animation and Experimental Film at the 2017 MECA Film Festival for her work on the campaign. Jamie’s personal favorite project that she has worked on is her senior thesis, entitled “You Are Offline.” After going away to college, Jamie felt disconnected from her childhood home. Traveling between Somers and Portland made it difficult to stay connected to the home she was raised in. In response, she created a playable game complete with scenes of her actual childhood home. She explained, “I recreated my childhood home in a foggy lens and to represent dissociation. Jumping between school and my 12 GO LOCAL NOVEMBER 2018
childhood home inspired it. I lost a lot of my memories.” After completing “You Are Offline,” Jamie invited her classmates to play the final product. The personal background coupled with the media aspects of the game made it a special project for Jamie. A video walkthrough of the project can be viewed on her website. While Jamie is passionate about her work in digital media, she also creates other forms of artwork including painting and illustration. As she explained, “Professionally, I am a game artist but I also do a lot of illustration. I do painting as self-gratification because I wasn’t good at it in high school until I took painting classes.” She recently completed a portrait of actor and singer Ezra Miller after almost two years without painting. While Jamie’s resume is already packed with extensive and impressive projects, her career is just getting started. Jamie hopes to become a part of a studio in the future where she can contribute digital media work and continue to create video games. “I would like to jump right in to working with games. I’ve had offers for commissions but I would love to be in a studio. I would love to join diverse people who have a passion for making games.” The amount of work Jamie has dedicated to video games is inspiring. With a career revolving around such a fun topic, there’s no doubt that young artists will be inspired by her. Jamie shared advice she has for young artists hoping to follow similar dreams. “For the young artists who are reading and wondering about their own artistic abilities, I wasn’t a great artist. But creating helped push me to my own passions. Anyone wanting to create should keep that in mind.” Jamie’s story of hard work and dedication goes to show that your dreams can always be followed, no matter what your original plan may have been. Much like a video game, life can take a unique turn at any moment. But it’s evident that Jamie is passing every level with a high score. ! RECIPE SUBMITTED BY BETH THURBER
PERFECT APPLE PIE
It’s America’s most classic dessert and yet, the humble apple pie is anything but basic. This apple pie is filled with fresh apples, mixed with the perfect blend of brown sugar and cinnamon, and then covered with a blanket of crust.
1 recipe pastry for a 9” double crust pie
Pre-heat oven to 425 degrees F.
1/2 cup unsalted butter
Melt the butter in a saucepan. Stir in flour to form a paste. Add water, white sugar and brown sugar, and bring to a boil. Reduce temperature and let simmer.
2 tbsp. all-purpose flour
8 Granny Smith apples (peeled, cored & sliced)
Place the bottom crust in your pan. (Brush bottom crust with egg white to keep from getting soggy). Fill with apples, mounded slightly. Cover with a lattice work crust. Gently pour the sugar and butter liquid over the crust. Pour slowly so that it does not run off. Bake 15 minutes in the pre-heated oven. Reduce the temperature to 350 degrees F. Continue baking for 35 to 45 minutes, until apples are soft.
1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon
Serve with vanilla ice cream or a slice of cheddar cheese!
1/4 cup water 1/2 cup white sugar 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
1/2 tsp. ground nutmeg 1 tbsp. corn starch (add with flour)

W
hat if you were able to continue to work daily at a job that you are passionate about while pursuing one of your longtime dreams? This is the life of Andrea Chasen of Longmeadow, Massachusetts, who practices mediation-conflict management by day, and writes by evening. After years of pondering her first work and enjoying books as a reader, she was able to release a novel of her own. Andrea Chasen grew up in Levittown, New York. She attended the State University of New York in Buffalo, and met her husband during her time there. The couple moved to Columbia, Maryland, where they had two children, but moved to Western Massachusetts in the late 1980s in order to raise their family in Longmeadow. She began her professional life as a lawyer, drafting for a law firm. After leaving the practice of law, she became a mediator, helping people to resolve disputes without involving courts. Her writing experience stems from writing professionally for academic journals, textbooks and non-fiction. “I loved the research, but I’d always toyed with the idea of writing fiction.” Her first novel, Taking Miss Grady Home, was self-published in July of this year on Amazon, and is inspired by true events. The story begins with the life of Katherine Grady, a woman with an enviable life. Raised by a wealthy grandmother in a New Eng-
land town, she was an outstanding pianist and vivacious young woman. She becomes a student at the prestigious Julliard School of Music in New York City, and lives her youth to the fullest by attending nightclubs, spending time with friends and exploring Manhattan. After meeting a charming Southern boy on the eve of World War II, it would seem she had it all. This changes with the life-altering event of her boyfriend being shipped overseas. The novel shifts to several decades later, where two strangers meet. Harry, who is a soon-to-be retired Long Island lawyer, and Muriel, a reporter for a small newspaper where Katherine Grady was raised. Harry wrote the will for Katherine several years prior, and, following her death, feels obliged to follow her wishes. There are no relatives around to explain the mystery surrounding Katherine’s lonesome life, and Harry is challenged to fulfill her will. With an inquisitive journalistic mind, Muriel questions the circumstances of the woman’s life: why would she move to a city in solitude and die alone? Together, Harry and Muriel embark on a mission to answer some of these mysteries. An old woman, who moved to Andrea’s hometown on Long Island in the 1950s, inspired the “Miss Grady” character in the story. She lived just around the corner from Andrea growing up, and she recalls the woman’s home being considered the “scary” house GOLOCALMAGAZINES.COM 18
on the street by neighborhood children. She lived alone in a home built for returning World War II GIs, was never married, and did not have a personal connection with any of her neighbors. The woman was deceased for several days before the neighborhood noticed. It seemed she was truly alone. Andrea’s father, who was an attorney in Long Island, reached out to her for assistance in connecting with the right party to fulfill the woman’s wishes of being buried in Western Massachusetts. “My father drafted the will for the woman. I reached out to the local state police barracks and the burial took place. It stayed on my mind.” Andrea considered her own possibilities on why the woman chose to live in a town of primarily families on Long Island, and Taking Miss Grady Home incorporates her own ideas of how the woman’s life began and what led her to the home she lived in. While, in part, the woman inspired the story; her father and his dedication to his career also inspired it. When Andrea was closing legal accounts following her father’s death, she realized her father was a passionate lawyer who cared about all the people that he assisted in the community. His work inspired the character of Harry, who shares many of her father’s attributes. Before Andrea knew it, the story took form. She enrolled in writing workshop classes in the early 2000s, where she penned several chapters of the novel. Her classmates were engrossed in the story and were always happy to hear the next portion. It remained on the back burner for years before Andrea decided to start up the story once more. “I was traveling a lot for work and thought ‘I will be close to 90 before I get to it!’” With the motivation to complete her story, the novel soon emerged. “It took a turn I hadn’t anticipated. As many writers know, characters create personalities and tend to hijack the story.” Since the release of the book, Andrea has facilitated book clubs on Taking Miss Grady Home. Two particular occurrences stood out as special to Andrea, where readers shared the affect her novel had on their lives. “One person told me reading the book made her realize she didn’t know her neighbor of ten years. She decided to introduce herself and found out her neighbor was agoraphobic. She said without the book, she would not have made that effort. Another reader shared with me that the book left her with a lot of thoughts about what it means to age and disconnect. I couldn’t have asked for better compliments. It’s changed them and made an impact.” Andrea has been recognized for her writing in public as well. While at an event recently, a reader approached her and exclaimed, “I’ve just downloaded your book!” She described that event as “exciting.” Starting her fiction-writing career has changed Andrea and her perspective on writing in general. “It’s made me realize I have more stories in me. I will continue to write. I feel like I’ve segued into the next phase of what I want to be writing.” 19 GO LOCAL NOVEMBER 2018
Inspired by “Miss Grady’s” story, Andrea has explored a number of small towns in Western Massachusetts and their cemeteries. She is fascinated by the history they embrace and the questions that they spark about the past. Andrea is largely a political advocate. She has participated with the Conservation Committee, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and in climate activism. She’s been marching since the late 1960s for peoples’ rights. She is a strong believer in voting and being the change you wish to see. With this passion comes inspiration for the next writing project she would like to pursue on the history of women and their place in society. “There are lessons about things we take for granted that are precious.” Taking Miss Grady Home is about solving mysteries, but leaves readers to answer several questions on their own. After reading the novel, you may find that you walk away wondering about “Miss Grady’s” life yourself, and also focusing on other aspects of your own life. You may just find yourself talking to the neighbor you’ve always been too shy to introduce yourself to, or even getting to know a stranger better. TAKING MISS GRADY HOME IS AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE ON AMAZON.COM AND CAN BE PURCHASED BOTH AS A PHYSICAL COPY AND FOR KINDLE E-READER. FOR INFO: TAKINGMISSGRADYHOME@GMAIL.COM

INSP RATION W
e are surrounded by artwork. When you step into a restaurant or even a doctor’s office, it’s almost certain that art in some form is decorating the walls. We see artwork every day and may not even realize it. But what if art was more than just a painting? What if it were a way to describe sound, scents and emotions? Alexander Le Fevre, from Enfield, Connecticut, is one of the unique young artists who contribute to the beauty that we see in the world. Bringing images he sees on a daily basis to life using acrylic paint, Alex captivates those who observe his original works by communicating what he thinks as well as what he views. Alex was born in Schenectady, New York. He moved around frequently during his childhood, but has settled in Enfield. Admittedly, he is never too sure where he may go. As Alex shared, “Who knows where life will take me?” He started painting in high school, but did not continue to practice painting and developing his craft for several years before pursuing a career in art. Growing up, Alex was shy and had trouble conveying his thoughts verbally. He used his painting skills to communicate. “Growing up, I always had a hard time communicating with people. It wasn’t like I had nothing to say, I just didn’t know how to say things that made sense. I also have a very active imagination. So between those two, I see things and speak in a lot of word pictures and illustrations.” GOLOCALMAGAZINES.COM 25
Finding his own way of communicating, Alex was able to use art as an outlet. “One day, I decided I wanted to paint how I feel and see the world. I wanted to ‘say what I couldn’t say’ with my art. When I paint, I can say things the way I want to and show a picture of what is in my head.” The little things in life inspire Alex. As he said, “I like to paint the small moments in life, the candid moments; the moments that are there for just a second before they pass. Those moments when time slows down and you really feel the joy of life itself. For example, how a song makes you feel when you are in a car, or when you see leaves falling around you in a certain way. Or even when you see someone smile at something cheesy,” No matter how big or small, the moments that capture our attention captivate Alex and are present as a part of his work. “I paint my joys, my fears, my dreams and the joy I see in others.” Alex’s process of inspiration is interesting, and helps him to paint new ideas as realistically as possible. “I like to take pictures of things so I can use them as references for future paintings. That way, when I say ‘I want to paint this or that,’ I know exactly how that object or person is supposed to appear and behave in real life.” While the passions of others play a role in what Alex creates, there’s a bit of personal charm behind each of his original works. 26 GO LOCAL NOVEMBER 2018
“When I paint, I paint for me. It’s my time to share what I think and try not to care what others think, because then I can be honest with my art and myself. Each piece is a little piece of me, so they all mean something.” Alex is also one of Jehovah’s Witnesses, which has influenced the artwork he creates. “One of the things we keep in mind is that we should stop and admire the nature and creation around us. So that helped me look around and admire the moments in life I want to paint.” But in the end, he has the ability to craft pieces that tie both his personal experiences and the experiences of others into them. “If people can really see what goes on in my head, I think that’s great. Art should give you all five senses. You should see yourself in that moment, you should smell the coffee in the picture, and taste it as if you were there. I want my art to do that to others like it does to me.” With all of his work has come success, and Alex’s work was featured in the Enfield Public Library for the month of October. His reaction to his art being displayed is one of happiness and disbelief. “I still can’t believe it. I never thought my art was something others would really like, but I decided to take a chance and go for it.” Alex is not only an artist, but also a fan of the work that others
do. He was compelled to be a part of the displays he often sees. “I always wanted to show my art locally. When I see other people’s art in common areas around town, it feels real and natural to me. You can tell when someone just likes making art and is passionate about it. I wanted to show my art in town, and after asking around, someone put me in contact with the library. It seemed like a great place for me to start.” Alex has painted numerous pieces over the span of his blossoming career. Among his favorites is a piece called “Bright Snowy Nights,” which represents, as he described, “a sleepy street on a crisp winter night.” One of his other favorites, “Courage,” comes with a bit of personal background. “It’s about fighting your insecurities to do something like giving a flower to someone you care about.” Alexander likes to break a mold each time he creates a new piece. He doesn’t stick to a typical portrait or painting, but rather, paints elements that the eye may miss in everyday life. “Because each of my paintings are from what I see in my head, I tailor each painting to convey the right meaning and perspective, and to make my art unique to me. It isn’t exactly a traditional copy of real life because I like to add a lot of visuals and symbolism in my art.” His work is difficult for Alex to describe in terms of type, but GOLOCALMAGAZINES.COM 27
rather, where he visualizes it being found. “I think it would be easier to say where I would see my art instead of what type it is. I would simply say my art is something you could find in a modern coffee shop or something like that.” He paints elements such as sounds or feelings, attempting to make them as visual as possible. “In my painting ‘Cruisin’,’ you can see the sound waves and energy of the music even though you can’t see it in real life. I knew from the beginning I didn’t want to be the guy who just did portraits or landscapes or abstract.” With the huge accomplishment of being featured at the Enfield Public Library, Alex plans to continue to create one-of-a-kind artwork. “I am always working on more art. I always have new thoughts, ideas, and perspectives that I know I can share with art.” Alex admits that without the support of family and friends, his path as an artist may not be the same. “I am thankful to my friends and family who have been supportive of my art. It’s important to have people there for you. They taught me to be balanced in life.” No matter what item or concept Alex is inspired by next, it is certain that he is inspiring others, and that his art will continue to flourish for years to come. WAR STORM, BY VICTORIA AVEYARD
WAR STORM (Red Queen #4)
Massachusetts and Connecticut are home to a number of talented writers. From children’s books to poetry, each town in the Go Local footprint has their own authors. On this page, we will delve into some of the great works from our neighbors. This month, I am reading War Storm by East Longmeadow native Victoria Aveyard.
WHAT’S IT ABOUT? Not to spoil too much, but this book is the final installment of the Red Queen series. It continues the story of Mare Barrow and her (now) broken heart, thanks to Cal’s betrayal. The novel follows Mare on her mission to overthrow the kingdom of Norta…and taking the crown from Maven.
FUN FACT: There is also a prequel novel to the series entitled Cruel Crown. The book contains two novellas, Queen Song and Steel Scars. The series also has its own coloring book!
WHY SHOULD I READ IT? This thrilling series has been compared to Game of Thrones. It’s the perfect series for those who enjoy fantasy fiction, twists and turns.
WHERE CAN I GET IT? The book can be purchased at Victoria Aveyard’s website, www.victoriaaveyard.com, or support your local library and check it out today! GOLOCALMAGAZINES.COM 35

TRUE CALLING
Especially for You ! STEPHANIE TROMBLEY
A
t any point, life can take twists and turns; leaving one to wonder which path they should take next. This is what led Terese Napoli in the direction of becoming a cosmetologist and to pursue her business, Especially For You In Home Services. Terese provides in-home cosmetology services for the elderly and people with disabilities. Bringing her skills to the homes of people in Wilbraham, Hampden, Chicopee, Agawam, West Springfield and surrounding areas, Terese has been able to not only change the lives of her clients, but her own life. “I had just gotten divorced and needed to get my kids on track. I had to start something. I had done medical billing for 25 years, but I knew that would be a lot of hours and I wouldn’t be able to advocate for my boys.” Terese was the victim of an abusive marriage. The wrongdoings that she and her two sons suffered through were unspeakable, but Terese refused to let them ruin the lives of herself and her boys. After leaving the marriage, Terese had to make a big change. She graduated from Kay Harvey Hairdressing Academy in 2014 and received her cosmetology license a month later. After working for places such as Great Clips and the Monastery Heights assisted living facility in West Springfield, Terese knew she had the 38 GO LOCAL NOVEMBER 2018
experience behind her to pursue something new. She cared for her beloved father until he passed away, and continues to care for her mother. This life experience coupled with professional hours gave Terese the know-how and passion to pursue Especially For You In Home Services. She was able to transition the level of caring she brought to patients in the medical field into the cosmetology field. Her father inspired her to further her career and keep positive after experiencing so many traumas. “My father is the reason why I am so strong. I saw him help out my mom. He was always there for me.” Terese received a certificate that allows her to travel to the homes of the elderly and disabled to complete hair and nail services. She has tailored her cosmetology skills to the needs of those who may not be able to visit a salon location. She colors and cuts hair and paints nails. She can traditionally wash hair, but also has the ability to spritz it or use dry shampoo if getting to a sink is too difficult for her clients. Now, after two years, Terese continues to develop her business. She weaves together the ability to offer salon services and build lasting relationships with those she meets. As she shared, “I combined my love of styling and compassion for people to create Especially For You In Home Services. I have met strong and
amazing people of all ages.” Terese feels lucky to have made her enthusiasm for beauty into a career. “It has blessed me, I love to give back. It’s therapeutic for me to care for people.” Becoming a stylist has forever changed her life. While Terese loves to create hair and nail looks, it’s the happiness she sparks in others that makes her career worth everything. She recalls a client sending her a text message stating, “Oh my gosh, you saved my life” in response to a hair service Terese provided. Terese described why she would never forget this particular client. “She has MS and cannot get out often. She was in the hospital and needed a test done that required eighteen pads on her head. They were matted to her hair. It came out absolutely beautiful and was back to normal. She texted me ‘Thank you, thank you, thank you.’ I’m so happy my clients feel they can rely on me.” Despite the number of setbacks in Terese’s life, she always maintains a positive outlook and bubbly personality. She credits her ability to stay strong to her faith. “I go to church. My father instilled in me that I could do all things with Christ. I have been a Christian since I was eight years old. When things get down, looking and seeking out what would be the best possibility on changing things is all I can do.” Terese has found faith in her clients as well. She recalled a day where everything seemed to be going wrong. She couldn’t seem to shake her worry and her upset feeling, but still continued her day at Kay Harvey Hairdressing Academy. “A woman came in and said she needed her eyebrows done. I brought her to my station and she said, ‘God sent me to you,’ and asked me what was on my mind. I couldn’t believe it. We prayed first. She was an angel. I haven’t seen her since.” The issue that was worrying Terese concluded that evening, leaving her to believe this client was in fact a sign from above to show her everything would be okay. Working with the elderly and people with disabilities is heartwarming for Terese. She develops friendships and lasting mem-
ories with those that she provides services to, and she never forgets particular clients. Terese had a returning client at Kay Harvey Hairdressing Academy whose roller sets she would do frequently. She had previously beaten cancer and Terese was still her hairdresser when the cancer came back. “We went through the whole thing together including the process of her losing her hair. I helped her pick out a wig. She wanted my input on what I thought would look cute on her. I used to visit her often and she was awesome. It was incredible to go through that with her when she needed me. I build relationships.” Terese also recalls feeling a connection with another of her terminally ill clients. She had cut and styled his hair once and he was happy with the result. His wife called Terese and told her he was in the hospital, but had requested her salon services once he was back home. She was able to help him, and he told her, “Thank you so much for coming here. I don’t know what I would do without you. I want to look good for God.” His comment floored Terese, and she realized that she was doing more than helping clients feel good about their appearance. She was making a huge impact on their lives. Now, Terese is planning to be a part of her church’s upcoming craft fair so that she may find new clients. She dreams of being able to take care of her sons while continuing her career as a stylist. K&P FLOWERS & GIFTS
INTERVIEW WITH ERIN FLETCHER
What distinguishes you from other businesses in your category?
We are the only full-service florist in Suffield and West Suffield offering the freshest and highest quality floral designs for all occasions. We serve the surrounding towns and our local customers by going the extra mile. We do our very best to accommodate any request that our clients bring to us. We are open to trying new things and making their wishes a reality.
Something people might be surprised to learn about You or your business.
As the new owner of K&P Flowers, many people don’t believe me when I tell them I have nearly 20 years of experience. I grew up in Bloomfield, Connecticut where I had my first experience with vocational agriculture and fell in love with flowers. I then went to UConn where I received a Bachelor’s of Science in Horticulture. I have never stopped creating floral designs since then. Owning my own shop was a lifelong dream that I finally realized earlier this year.
Why should people do business with you?
Along with myself, our designers have a combined experience of almost 80 years and they are amazingly talented and creative. There is just no comparison. We strive for the highest quality and consistency in all we do. Our customers rave about our work on a daily basis as evident by our online reviews.

HARVEST FLORAL CENTERPIECE
Flowers of your choosing (4 small bunches)
Thanksgiving is fast approaching. While the turkey is usually the star of the show, why not draw attention to the dinner table dĂŠcor this fall with a handmade centerpiece? Here is a step-by-step guide to creating a personalized floral centerpiece perfect for any harvest occasion.
Styrofoam pumpkin Glitter Glue School Glue Small styrofoam ball Paint brush Ribbon of your choosing Scissors Loose leaves (optional) Wooden letter
STEP 1: Begin by hollowing out the center of your pumpkin. Carefully use the scissors to remove the top of the pumpkin, much like you would while carving a jack-o-lantern. STEP 2: Insert Styrofoam ball into the center of the pumpkin. STEP 3: Paint the outside of your pumpkin with the glitter glue. The more layers of glue, the sparklier the pumpkin will be. Set the pumpkin aside. STEP 4: While you wait for your pumpkin to dry, paint the wooden letter with the same glue. Set aside. STEP 5: Once your pumpkin has dried, put a light ring of school glue around the pumpkin. Then, wrap the ribbon around the pumpkin. STEP 6: Once your letter has dried, glue it to the front of the pumpkin, covering the area where both ends of the ribbon meet. STEP 7: Trim the stems of the flowers so that the stems are hidden from view when inside the pumpkin. Insert each bunch of flowers one at a time into the Styrofoam ball. STEP 8: Use the loose leaves to fill out the arrangement, or to decorate your pumpkin. Let your creativity soar! You now have a complete Thanksgiving arrangement to bring vibrant hues to your home!
