Değerli vatandaşlarım;

Dear citizens;

“İstikbal göklerdedir” diyerek havayolu ulaşımının önemine dikkat çeken Büyük Atatürk 3 Mayıs 1935’te yaptığı bir konuşmasında şöyle diyordu; “Türk çocuğu! Her işte olduğu gibi havacılıkta da, en yüksek düzeyde, gökte seni bekleyen yerini, az zamanda dolduracaksın”. 1935’ten bu yana çok zaman geçti. Büyük Atatürk’ün diğer alanlarda olduğu gibi ulaşım alanında da mirasını yaşatmak, devrettiği bayrağı daha ileriye götürmek ise hükümetimize nasip oldu. Hükümetimiz, havayolunu halkın yolu haline getirdi. 10 yılda havcılığımızı neredeyse 10 kat büyüttük, 16 milyon vatandaşımızın ilk defa uçağa binmesini sağladık.

Bizim dönemimizde uçağa binmeyi imtiyaz olmaktan çıkarıp ihtiyaca dönüştürdük.

Ancak yaptıklarımızla yetinmeyeceğiz. Ülkemizin 2023 vizyonunu şimdiden ortaya koyduk. Cumhuriyetimiz’in kuruluşunun 100’üncü yılında, 2023’te havacılığımızın nerede olacağını biliyoruz. Bu kapsamda yapacağımız havalimanlarıyla vatandaşlarımızın ulaşımını kolaylaştırarak, herhangi bir yöne ortalama 100 kilometre mesafede veya bir saat seyahatle havalimanlarına erişimlerini de mümkün hale getireceğiz. Bu plan doğrultusunda 10 yılda 25 olan aktif havalimanı sayısını 49’a çıkardık. Yaptığımız tüm havalimanlarını da modern bir mimariyle tasarladık. Sivas, Erzincan, Batman, Erzurum, Malatya, Hatay, Gaziantep, Şanlıurfa-GAP, Elazığ ve Iğdır gibi birçok havalimanı, son teknoloji ve modern mimarileriyle vatandaşlarımıza hizmet vermeye başladı.

Bu yatırımlarımızla birlikte yine 2013 yılı içerisinde bir dizi havaalanı açılışı yapacağız. Bu yıl içerisinde Bingöl, Şırnak ve Kastamonu havalimanlarını hizmete alarak yurtiçinde uçuş yapılan nokta sayısını şimdiden 52’ye çıkartacağız.

Cumhuriyetimiz’in 100’üncü yılı olan 2023’te ise hedeflerine ulaşmış ve havacılıkta lider ülkeler arasında yer alan bir Türkiye fotoğrafını göreceğiz.

When he said “Future is in the skies” to emphasize the importance of aviation, our great leader Atatürk said the following in his speech he delivered on 3 May 1935; “You young Türk! Just as with everything else, you are supposed to take your own place in the skies and achieve the best of everything in aviation as well”. It’s been a long time since 1935 and its been the privilege of our government to continue the heritage of our great leader in the area of transportation just as in many other fields and to carry the flag further. Out government made the airways the ways of people. We managed to help grow our aviation sector 10 times during the last 10 years and enabled 16 million citizens to use airlines for traveling. During our period, riding in a plane turned from being a privilege into being a necessity. But we’re not content with what we’ve done.

We’ve already set the vision of our country for year 2023. In the 100th anniversary of our Republic, we know where our aviation will be in 2023. With the airports we will build as part of this vision, we will also make commuting to and from airports more convenient with all airports being in 100 km or 1 hour distance from most parts of the cities. As part of this plan, we increased the number of airports in service from 25 to 49 in only 10 years. And we built all these new airports with modern architecture. Equipped with the latest technologies, many airports such as Sivas, Erzincan, Batman, Erzurum, Malatya, Hatay, Gaziantep, Şanlıurfa-GAP, Elazığ and Iğdır, have started serving our citizens.

With all these investments, we will be opening some new airports in 2013 as well. This year, we’ve just commissioned Bingöl, Şırnak and Kastamonu airports and we’ve already increased the number of domestic flight destinations to 52.

And in 2023, the 100th anniversary of our Republic, we will see the picture of a Turkey that has reached its goals and secured its place among the leading countries of the aviation sector.

Değerli misafirlerimiz; Türk sivil havacılığında çok önemli yatırımlar yapılıyor, dev projelerin ihaleleleri sonuçlanıyor. Dünyanın en büyük projelerinden biri olan İstanbul Yeni Havalimanı projesi için çalışmalar başladı.

Bu yoğun sürecin ardından önemli bir organizasyona ev sahipliği yaptı İstanbul. ‘Dinamik Havalimanları Sektörü Dönüşümü’ başlığıyla düzenlenen ACI Worl-Europe Konferans ve Fuarı, İstanbul Lütfi Kırdar Konferans Merkezi’nde gerçekleştirildi.

Toplam 174 ülkedeki bin 751 havalimanını temsil eden 800’den fazla üst düzey yöneticinin katıldığı konferansta havacılık sektörünün geleceği masaya yatırıldı. Küresel havacılık sektörünün en büyük ve önemli organizasyonlarından biri daha ülkemizde gerçekleştirilmiş oldu. Bu bir rastlantı değil, zira Türk sivil havacılık sektörü küresel ölçekte örnek gösteriliyor yıllardan beri…

Yine geçen ay içinde hepimizi onurlandıran bir haber aldık. Gelir İdaresi Başkanlığı’nın (GİB) açıkladığı 2012 yılına ait ‘Kurumlar Vergisi İlk 100’ sıralamasında, DHMİ Genel Müdürlüğü kamu kurumları arasında üçüncü, ‘İlk 100’ listesinde de 18’inci sırada yer alma başarısını gösterdi. DHMİ, sadece vergi rekortmeni değil, kamu-özel sektör işbirliği öncüsü, hizmet ve yatırım şampiyonu bir kuruluş olduğunu bir kez daha kanıtlamış oldu. .

DHMİ’nin ekonomiye 2012 yılındaki toplam katkısı 868.1 milyon lira oldu. Hizmet satışlarımızın tutarı ise 2012 yılında 1 milyar 963 milyon liraya ulaştı. Rakamların tanıklık ettiği bu tablo kuruluşumuz için gurur verici...

Yedi gün 24 saat hız kesmeden çalışmanın meyvelerini topluyoruz. Bu çalışmalarımız sonucunda ülkemize kazandırdıklarımız, bizi daha da motive ediyor ve çalışmalarımıza daha da hız veriyoruz.

Yaz mevsimi havalimanlarında ciddi yoğunlukların yaşandığı bir dönem oluyor. Bunun ilk verilerini de almaya başladık. Rekorlara doymayan İstanbul Atatürk Havalimanı, geçen ay içinde bir rekor daha kırdı. Atatürk Havalimanı’nda 21 Haziran Cuma günü bin 199 uçak iniş kalkış yaptı. Böylece tüm zamanların rekoru kırılmış oldu.

Aynı gün toplam 135 bin 371 yolcu havalimanına giriş çıkış yaptı.

Benzer bir rekor da Antayla Havalimanı’nda kırıldı. 29 Haziran’da 937 uçak bu havalimanımıza iniş kalkış yaptı.

71 bin 745 turist girişi, 71 bin 225 turist çıkışı oldu. İç hatlarda ise 20 bin yolcu taşındı. Böylece tüm zamanların rekoru kırıldı.

Dear guests; We’re making significant investments in the Turkish civil aviation sector and finalizing tenders for large scale projects. We’ve already started working on the new airport project for İstanbul which is considered to be one of the biggest projects in this field in the world.

As part of this busy process, İstanbul has just hosted an important event. The ACI World-Europe Conference and Exhibition titled ‘Transformation of Dynamic Airports’ was held at Istanbul Lütfi Kırdar Conference Hall.

The main topic of discussion of the conference attended by over 800 senior managers representing 1.751 airports in 174 countries was the future of the aviation sector. The event also featured the General Assembly of ACI. With this event another big and important organization of the global aviation sector has been organized in our country. This is not a coincidence, because Turkish civil aviation sector has been accepted as an exemplary sector for many years now…

Again last month, we received a news that was a source of pride for all of us. SAA ranked third in the list of ‘Top 100 Companies for Corporate Income Tax’ for 2012 among other public companies and it ranked 18th in the list of 100 companies as announced by the Revenue Administration and SAA proved once again that is not only a top tax payer but also the pioneer of public-private sector cooperation and a champion in terms of new investments. SAA’s contribution to the budget has been 189 million TL in 2012 and the total value of our service sales has been 1 billion and 963 million TL. This whole picture of success confirmed by numbers is a source of pride for our company…

We’re reaping the fruits of working non-stop 24/7. Our contributions as a result of all this work motivates us further and allows us to work with greater ambition.

Summer is a very busy period for the airports. And initial statistics have started flowing in already. Breaking records one after the other, Atatürk Airport, broke one more record last month too. On Friday June 21st, a total of 1.199 aircrafts used the airport. This is an all time high. On the same day, a total of 135.371 passengers passed through the airport. A similar record came from Antalya Airport. On June 29th, 937 aircrafts landed at the airport. A total of 71.745 tourists entered the country and 71.225 exited. And the total number of passengers served in domestic lines was 20.000. It was an all time high.

SAA will continue its contributions to the economy as well as breaking new records in its business. In order to provide the best and safest service despite the ever-increasing aircraft and passenger traffic, the personnel of SAA and other relevant organizations, work non-stop 24/7.

All flights are being realized smoothly and safely thanks to this selfsacrificing and diligent work. During Ramadan as well, we’ll be working with a great deal of self-sacrifice to help you meet your loved ones as soon as possible and to have a safe and convenient journey through our airports.

TÜM DÜNYANIN HAVALİMANLARININ YÖNETİCİLERİ İSTANBUL’DAYDI Uluslararası Havalimanları Konseyi’nin (ACI), TAV’ın ev sahipliğinde ‘Dinamik Havalimanları Sektörü Dönüşümü’ başlığıyla düzenlenen ACI Worl-Europe Konferans ve Fuarı, İstanbul Lütfi Kırdar Konferans Merkezi’nde gerçekleştirildi.

Toplam 174 ülkedeki bin 751 havalimanını temsil eden 800’den fazla üst düzey yöneticinin katıldığı konferansta havacılık sektörünün geleceğini masaya yatırıldı.

Etkinlikte ACI’nın genel kurulu gerçekleştirildi.

Ulaştırma, Denizcilik ve Haberleşme Bakanı Binali Yıldırım video konferansla katıldığı açılışta, Türkiye’nin havacılıkta bölge merkezi haline geldiğini belirterek “Ülkemiz havalimanlarında dünyanın kabul ettiği yap-işlet-devret modelinin en başarılı örneğini verdi. Sektörde Türkiye’nin adının milyar dolarlık projelerle anılması bizi mutlu ediyor” dedi.

Yıldırım, havacılıkta küresel büyüme yıl bazında yüzde 5 civarında olurken, Türkiye’de bu büyümenin hep iki haneli oranlarda olduğuna vurgu yaparak, iç hatlarda daha da yüksek olduğuna işaret etti.

Küresel anlamda dış hatlarda da büyümenin ortalama yüzde 15-20 civarında gerçekleştiğine dikkati çeken Bakan Yıldırım, bunun daha çok havalimanı inşa edilmesi, mevcut havalimanlarının da genişletilmesi anlamına geldiğini söyledi. Kamu ve özel sektör işbirliğiyle geliştirilen birçok projede başarı sağlandığını belirten Yıldırım konuşmasına şöyle devam etti: “Yap-işlet-devret kamu özel sektör ortaklığıyla Türkiye’nin yıllık toplam 130 milyon civarındaki iç-dış yolcu sirkülasyonunu sağlayan önemli havalimanlarını genel bütçe imkânları dışında kamu-özel sektör ortaklığıyla gerçekleştirmiş oluyoruz. Bu model çok iyi bir model olması nedeniyle sadece Türkiye’de uygulanmakla kalmamış aynı tecrübe değişik ülkelerde, yaklaşık 13 ülkede daha havalimanları terminalleri inşa 8

edilmek suretiyle bölgesel bir işbirliğine de dönüşmüştür.

Türk havacılık sektörünün ACI üyesi havalimanlarıyla paylaşabileceği geniş bir tecrübesi vardır. Üçüncü Havalimanı projesini buna örnek gösterebiliriz. Kamuözel sektör ortaklığı projesiyle dünyanın birkaç büyük havalimanının ölçeğinde, yıllık 120 milyon kapasiteye kadar ulaşabilecek bir havalimanını yap-işlet-devret modeliyle gerçekleştirdik. Bu havalimanı kuzeyden güneye tamamen bir aktarma merkezi olacak ve böylece küresel trafiğin önemli durak noktalarından birisi bu bölgeye kazandırılmış olacaktır.”

DHMİ Yönetim Kurulu Başkanı ve Genel Müdürü Orhan Birdal, 10 Haziran’daki resepsiyonda bir ‘hoş geldiniz’ konuşması yaptı.

Konuşmasına “Bu akşam bu güzel mekân, dostların, arkadaşların buluşmasına; birçok sektör mensubunun da bir araya gelip tanışmalarına, kaynaşmalarına tanıklık edecek” diye başlayan Birdal, şöyle dedi: “Yıllık ACI Dünya/Avrupa kongre ve Fuarı sayesinde, dünya havacılığının kalbi İstanbul’da atacak. Sektör temsilcileri; bu güzel organizasyon sayesinde hem bilgi ve tecrübe alışverişinde bulunacaklar hem de asırlar boyunca kültür ve medeniyetlere beşiklik etmiş olan İstanbulumuz’un havasını teneffüs etmiş olacaklar.

Zamanımızda Türkiye ekonomisinin kalbinin attığı bu güzel şehir; gelecekte dünya havacılığının en gözde merkezlerinden birisi haline gelecek. Büyüyen Türkiye’nin, havacılık alanında devleşen bu eşsiz şehri, biliyorsunuz dünyanın en büyük havalimanın inşa edileceği şehir. Ön sözleşmesi imzalanan bu mega proje, dünya havacılığının da gözdesi olacak… Dünya İstanbul’u görsün diye… İşte dünya havacılığı için böylesine müstesna bir dünya kentinde sizleri ağırlamaktan büyük mutluluk duyduğumu ifade ediyor; hepinizi sevgi ve saygıyla selamlıyorum.”

AIRPORT MANAGERS OF ALL AIRPORTS IN THE WORLD WERE IN İSTANBUL

The ACI World-Europe Conference and Exhibition titled ‘Transformation of Dynamic Airports’ organized by ACIAirports Council International and hosted by TAV, was held at İstanbul Lütfi Kırdar Conference Hall.

The main topic of discussion of the conference attended by over 800 senior managers representing 1.751 airports in 174 countries was the future of the aviation sector. The event also featured the General Assembly of ACI. Minister of Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communication Binali Yıldırım joined the opening ceremony of the event via tele-conference and during his speech Mr. Yıldırım stated that Turkey has turned into a major hub for aviation and said “With its airports, our country demonstrated the best examples of build-run-transfer model for the aviation industry. It makes us happy that Turkey’s name has now been associated with million dollar worth projects in the sector”. Yıldırım stated that while annual growth rate of the global aviation sector was around 5% this rate has always been two digit numbers in Turkey and that it is even higher for domestic lines.

Yildirim also emphasized that growth rate has been 1520% for international lines at the global level and that it translated into more airports being constructed and more of the existing airports being expanded. Yıldırım also mentioned that many projects carried out in cooperation with the private sector have been completed successfully and continued as follows: “With the state-private sector partnership based on the build-run-transfer model we’ve been able to complete the construction of major airports in Turkey with annual passenger volume of around 130 million without using and funds from the general budget. Because it is a very effective business model, it wasn’t implemented only in Turkey but

also in 13 other countries for the construction of airports and terminals. Turkish aviation industry has profound experience in this field which it can share with ACI member airports. The project for the third airport is a very good example. We’ve completed a very big airport project with an annual capacity of 120 million passengers with the buildrun-transfer model. This airport is going to serve as a transit center between north and south as well as one of the major stops of the global air traffic” SAA Chairman of the Board and General Manager Orhan Birdal delivered a welcome speech at the reception held on June 10th.

In his speech, Birdal said “Tonight, this beautiful place will witness the gathering of friends and fellows as well as professionals from the sector” and continued as follows: “Thanks to the annual ACI World-Europe Conference and Exhibition, the heart of the world aviation sector is going to beat in İstanbul. Sector’s representatives will have a chance to exchange knowledge and experience and spend some good time in İstanbul, a city that has been the cradle of many civilizations in history.

This beautiful city where the heart of the Turkish economy beats now, will turn into one of the top spots of global aviation sector in the future. This unique city of rapidly developing Turkey which as become a giant in the aviation sector now, is also the city where the biggest airport in the world is going to be built. This mega project for which the initial contract has been signed, will also become the favorite of the global aviation sector...

So that thee whole world can see İstanbul... In such a special city that is so important for the global aviation sector, I would like to say that I’m so happy to be welcoming you and would like to express my blessings and respect to you all.”

DHMİ; HEM VERGİ REKORTMENİ HEM DE YATIRIM ŞAMPİYONU Devlet Hava Meydanları İşletmesi (DHMİ) Genel Müdürü Orhan Birdal, Gelir İdaresi Başkanlığı’nın (GİB) açıkladığı 2012 yılına ait ‘Kurumlar Vergisi İlk 100’ sıralamasında, DHMİ Genel Müdürlüğü’nün kamu kurumları arasında üçüncü, ilk 100 listesinde de 18’inci sırada yer aldığını belirterek, “DHMİ, sadece vergi rekortmeni değil, kamuözel sektör işbirliği öncüsü, hizmet ve yatırım şampiyonu bir kuruluş” dedi. Birdal, yaptığı açıklamada, DHMİ olarak 2012 yılında 150 milyon 968 bin lira vergi ödeyerek kurumlar vergisi rekortmenleri arasında yer aldıklarını anımsatarak, “Bütçeye katkımız, 2012 yılında 189 milyon lira olarak gerçekleşti. SAA BREAKING RECORDS BOTH AS A TAX PAYER AND AN INVESTOR SAA General Manager Orhan Birdal indicated that SAA ranked third in the list of ‘Top 100 Companies for Corporate Income Tax’ for 2012 among other public companies and it ranked 18th in the list of 100 companies as announced by the Revenue Administration and said “SAA is not only top tax payer but also a champion in terms of new investments”. In his statement, Birdal reminded that they are among the top corporate tax payers with the total corporate tax of 150 million 968 thousand paid in 2012 and said “Our contribution to the budget was 189 million TL in 2012. And our total contribution to the economy in 2012 was 868.1 million TL. And the total of our service sales was 1 billion and 963 million TL. This whole picture of success confirmed by numbers is a source of pride for our company”.

Birdal stated their contribution to the national economy is in the form of high taxes and that as a result of public-private sector partnership, they’ve opened the way to transfer private sector 10

resources to important infrastructure investments.

Birdal indicated that SAA has become an global company as a result of its superior managerial and organizational achievements especially during the last 10 years and said “SAA, while completing the investments needed by the national aviation sector in a timely manner, also made significant contributions to the national economy. The projects we’ve developed and started only in 2013 amount to billion dollar figures. The new İstanbul Airport which we’ve realized after the order of our Prime Minister and with tremendous support and direction from our Minister of Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communication Binali Yıldırım, and which is accepted as the tender of the century, is the peek of our investment achievements. ANTALYA-SİVAS-ERZİNCAN SEFERLERİ BAŞLADI Antalya-Sivas-Erzincan uçak seferleri başladı. Antalya’dan kalkan Onur Air’e ait uçak, 1 saat 20 dakika süren yolculuk sonrası saat 11.50 sularında Sivas Nuri Demirağ Havalimanı’na geldi. Ulaştırma, Denizcilik ve Haberleşme Bakanlığı Müsteşarı Habib Soluk ile Devlet Hava Meydanları İşletmesi (DHMİ) Genel Müdürü Orhan Birdal’ın da yer aldığı uçak, aprona girişi sırasında iki itfaiye aracından karşılıklı fışkırtılan suyun altından geçti. Soluk ve beraberindekileri, Sivas protokolü çiçeklerle karşıladı. Sivas’ta yapılan törende konuşan Ulaştırma, Denizcilik ve Haberleşme Bakanlığı Müsteşarı Habib Soluk, ilk uçuşla birlikte Sivas’a geldiklerini belirterek, uçuşların ancak sahip çıkılması durumunda sürdüğüne dikkat çekti. Sivas’ın artık karadan, havadan, kısa süre sonrasında da yüksek hızlı trenle ulaşılabilecek bir şehir olacağına değinen Soluk, İstanbul, İzmir ve Antalya gibi turizmin ve ticaretin merkezi olan üç önemli şehirle Sivas’ın havadan bağlandığını ifade etti.

Uçuşların başlaması münasebetiyle Sivas’tan sonra Erzincan’da da tören düzenlendi. Erzincan’da düzenlenen karşıma törenine Vali Abdurrahman Akdemir, Belediye Başkanı Yüksel Çakır ve AK Parti Erzincan İl Başkanı Cemalettin Başsoy katıldı. Davul zurna eşliğinde uçaktan inen yolcular daha sonra törenin yapılacağı alana geçti.

Erzincan’daki törende konuşan DHMİ Genel Müdürü Orhan Birdal, Onur Air firmasına Sivas ve Erzincan’a sefer düzenledikleri için teşekkür ederek; “Erzincan Havalimanı 1988 yılından beri açıktır. Ülkemizin beş ayrı noktasına Erzincan’dan artık direkt uçuş var. NEW SCHEDULED FLIGHTS BETWEEN ANTALYA-SİVAS AND ERZİNCAN New scheduled flights between Antalya, Sivas and Erzincan have been announced. Onur Air aircraft which took of from Antalya reached Sivas Nuri Demirağ Airport around 11.50 after the flight that lasted around 1 hour 20 minutes. The aircraft which carried Undersecretary of the Ministry of Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communication Habib Soluk and SAA General Manager Orhan Birdal, passed under the water sprinkled by two fire trucks on both sides of the apron. Soluk and his team were welcome with flowers by the welcoming committee in Sivas.

On the other hand, Habib Soluk who delivered a speech at the ceremony held in Sivas, stated that they’ve come to Sivas with the first scheduled flight and that the scheduled flights can continue only if people stake their claims in them. Soluk also mentioned that Sivas will soon be accessible via a high speed train as well and that the city is now connected with three major commercial and tourism hubs of Turkey, namely Istanbul, Izmir and Antalya. Another ceremony was held also in Erzincan for celebrating the start of new scheduled flights. Among the 12

participants of the welcoming party held in Erzincan were Erzincan Governor Abdurrahman Akdemir, Major of Erzincan Yüksel Çakır and President of AK Parti Erzincan Head Office Cemalettin Başsoy. The passengers of the flight were welcome with live traditional music after which they were invited to the venue where the welcoming ceremony took place. SAA General Manager Orhan Birdal who delivered a speech at the ceremony held in Erzincan, express his gratitude to Onur Airlines for starting these scheduled flights to Sivas and Erzincan and said “Erzincan Airport has been in service since 1988. Since then, we’ve had times when we had to wait for the scheduled flights, sometimes up to 3 days. But now we have scheduled flights even a couple of times per day. We have direct flights to five different destinations from Erzincan. I would like to express my gratitude to our Prime Minister for his great contributions to our aviation industry and to our Minister of Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communication Mr. Binali Yıldırım for his valuable insights that served as guidance for us in shaping our civil aviation industry.”

BÜYÜYEN SEKTÖRÜN DİNAMİK DERNEĞİ Türkiye’de ve dünyada sivil havacılık sektörü hızla gelişip büyüyor. Hızla gelişen teknoloji ve globalleşen dünyada havayolu ulaşımı inanılmaz bir artış göstererek ulaşımda önemli bir noktaya hatta ilk sıraya yerleşiyor. Havayolu ulaşımındaki artan bu ihtiyacın karşılanması ve havayolu ulaşımının hızlı, konforlu ve güvenli bir şekilde yapılmalısının önemi her geçen gün biraz daha artıyor. Türkiye’de sivil havalimanlarının işletmesini ve aynı zamanda hava seyrüsefer hizmetini bir arada yürüten Devlet Hava Meydanları İşletmesi, havacılık sektöründeki gelişimin öncüsü oldu ve Avrupa’daki ülkelerle yarışır hale gelmiş bulunuyor. Ülkemizin yarıştaki konumunu daha ileri götürülmesi ve sivil havacılığın dünya standartlarında sayılır bir yere sahip olması için Sivil Havalimanları Koruma ve Güvenlik Memurları Dayanışma Derneği katkı sunabileceği çalışmalar adına her türlü göreve hazır ve yapılan çalışmalara da destek vermek dernek üyeleri için bir gurur vesilesi olacak. olabilir. Türkiye’nin sivil havacılık güvenliği konusunda yeniliklere ihtiyacı var. Kuruluşlar elindeki mevcut kalifiye personelden istifade etmeli ve personel bu konuda uzmanlığa teşvik edilmeli... Mevcut mevzuata yamalar yapılarak değil bütünleyici bir yaklaşımla toptan ele alınarak sivil havacılık güvenliği mevzuatının yenilenmesi gerekiyor. 5188 sayılı Yasa mevcut haliyle sadece özel güvenlik şirketlerinin hizmet sunmasına yönelik bir uygulama yasası olarak önümüze çıkıyor. Bu haliyle de ne sivil havacılık güvenliğindeki ihtiyaca ne de diğer alanlardaki ihtiyaçlara cevap veremez durumda... Gerekli çalışmalar yapılarak günümüz ihtiyaçlarını karşılayacak bir düzenleme yapılması gerekliliği ortada. Bu düzenlemeler yapılırsa daha iyi hizmet ve kalite ortaya çıkacaktır.

Kurulduğu günden bu yana dernek, sivil toplum örgütleriyle, kurumlarla temaslarda bulunarak bilgi alışverişlerinde bulundu ve sivil havacılık güvenliği hakkındaki çalışmalarını ve taleplerini ilgili makamlara sundu. DHMİ Genel Müdürü Orhan Birdal ile görüşülerek çalışmalar, projeler hakkında bilgi sunuldu, güvenlik teşkilatının sorunları anlatılarak olumlu bir görüşme gerçekleştirildi. Sivil havacılık güvenliği dışında kalan güvenlik görevini ifa edenleri temsil eden sivil toplum örgütleriyle yapılan panel, sempozyum ve toplantılara katılarak onlara destek olundu. 5188 sayılı Yasa’da değişiklik için TBMM İçişleri Komisyonu’na dernek adına bir çalışma sunuldu. Derneğin Hukuk Bölümü ve ArGe Bölümü için uzman akademisyenlerle beraber projeler yürütülüyor.

Institutions must utilize their qualified staff at hand and encourage specialization in these fields… Instead of patching existing regulations, laws addressing civil aviation security must be completely renewed by taking a comprehensive approach.

The current law numbered 5188 is a law enforcement act enabling only private security companies to provide security services, and hence is not able to address the needs of neither the civil aviation security industry nor other areas… It is evident that necessary actions must be taken to make a regulation addressing all existing needs. Better service and higher quality are to be expected, when these regulations are put into practice.

Ever since its inception, the association has been getting in touch with civil society organizations and institutions and exchanging information. The association has even submitted its research studies and petitions regarding civil aviation security to concerning authorities. A constructive meeting was held with the director general of General Directorate of State Airports Authority, Mr. Orhan Birdal, where issues of security organizations were discussed and information on the association’s studies and projects presented.

Several panels, symposiums and meetings have been supported and organized together with civil society organizations representing safety professionals other than the civil aviation safety officers. A petition to amend the law numbered 5188 has been submitted in the name of the association to the Grand National Assembly of Turkey’s Internal Affairs Commission. Additionally joint projects are currently being carried out with expert academicians for the association’s Law and R&D departments.

FOR A FAST AND SAFE TRAVEL One cannot emphasize enough the speed and safety dilemma in the transportation industry. Professionalism is crucial as the industry relies on a distinctive expertise inherent in the nature of this profession. The Civil Airports Protection and Safety Officers Solidarity Association, a newly founded organization dedicated to contributing to civil aviation, shall continue to providing high quality services at world standards with well informed and equipped staff, and contributing to the advancement of fast and safe air travel.

BURSA A Metropolitan for the last 700 years

700 yıldan bu yana büyük şehir

Bursa, ‘ulu’ların şehri… Ama kenti görülmeye değer kılan tek özelliği Uludağ ile Ulucami’ye sahip olması değil. Uludağ, ülkenin en büyük kayak mekânlarından biri kuşkusuz. Ulucami de Bursa’nın camiden yana olan zenginliğinin simgesi. Sultan Yıldırım Bayezit tarafından 1396–1400 yıllarında yaptırılmış olan cami, mimarisi, ahşap işçiliği ve içindeki yazı sanatları bakımından özel yere sahip.

And Ulucami mosque symbolizes the abundance of mosques in Bursa. Bursa’nın camileri birbirinden güzel mimari özelliklere sahip. Çoğunluğu 15’inci yüzyıl eseri olmakla birlikte aralarında önceki yüzyıla uzananlar da var. Emir Sultan Cami, Yıldırım Bayezit’in kızı ve Emir Sultan’ın eşi olan Hundi Hatun tarafından 15’inci yüzyılın başında yaptırtılmış. Yeşil Cami de aynı yüzyılın ürünü. Çelebi Sultan Mehmet tarafından Hacı İvaz Paşa’ya yaptırtılmış. Bu ikisinden daha eski bir tarihte yapılan Orhan Bey Camii’nin dikkat çeken özelliği motiflerinin sadeliği. 1339’da yapılmış ama 1576’da genişletilmiş. Anıtsal bir görünüme sahip olan Yıldırım Camii ise ‘Tars T’ planlı camilerin en özgün olanı. Ayrıca Bursa tipi kemerler ilk kez bu yapıda kullanılmış. Sultan II. Murat tarafından yaptırılan Muradiye, namı diğer II. Murat Camii ise kentte Osmanlı padişahları adına yaptırılan son cami. Yapılış tarihleri 1424-1426... Bursa deyince akla cami gelmesi hiç boşuna değil. İşte akla gelen diğerleri: Hamzabey Camii, İznik Yeşil Cami, Hacı Özbek Camii…

Bursa mosques offer a variety of beautiful

architectural aspects. While most of them were built in the 15th century, some of them date back to the previous century. Emir Sultan Mosque was founded by Hundi Hatun, daughter of Yıldırım Bayezit and the wife of Emir Sultan. Yesil Mosque is the product of the same year too. It was founded by Celebi Sultan Mehmet and constructed by Hacı İvaz Paşa. The most prominent feature of Orhan Bey Mosque, which was built long before both of these mosques, is the simplicity of the motifs used in the design of the mosque. It was built in 1339 but it was later expanded in 1576. With its monumental look, Yıldırım Mosque, on the other hand, is the most unique example of the mosques with Tars T plan. Also, the Bursa type arches were used for the first time in this mosque. Founded by Sultan Murat II, Muradiye Mosque, also known as II. Murat Mosque, is the last mosque constructed in the name of an Ottoman Emperor in the city. It was built between 1424-1426. There is certainly a reason to first think about mosques when reminded of Bursa. Here are some of the many other mosques in the city: Hamzabey Mosque, İznik Yeşil Mosque, Hacı Özbek Mosque …

CAMİLERİN YANINDA KİLİSE VE SİNAGOGLAR Öte yandan sanılmasın ki Bursa’nın kent yaşamında camilerin yarattığı bir dini atmosfer hâkim. Kentin çok önemli ve değerli kiliseleriyle sinagogları da var. 19’uncu yüzyıl yapımı Fransız Kilisesi herhalde içlerinde en genç olanı... Helena Konstantinos Kilisesi ise en yaşlısı. Yapımı 4’üncü yüzyıla kadar uzanıyor.

Uluabat Gölü’nün Manastır Adası’nda bulunuyor. 8’inci yüzyılda yapılan ve ismini Meryem Ana’nın ölümünü tasvir eden fresklerden almış olan Koimesis Kilisesi ise İznik’in doğusunda. İznik’teki bir diğer kilisenin adı ise Aziz Tryphonos.

Bu kilise Bizans İmparatoru II. Theodoros Laskaris’in emriyle Aziz Tryphonos onuruna 13’üncü yüzyılda yapılmış.

Mudanya’da da, Bizans İmparatoru IV. Konstantinos Porphyrogenetos döneminde yaptırılmış olan Kumyaka Kilisesi’nden söz edilebilir. Bursa’da bilinen iki önemli sinagog ise Geruş ile Ets Ahayim sinagogları…

ULUDAĞ’IN KIŞI KADAR YAZI DA… Her kentin bir milli parkı var hemen hemen... Bursa’nınki de Uludağ’da. Milli parkın özelliklerini belirleyen en önemli özellik de tabii ki Uludağ’ın jeolojik yapısı. CHURCHES AND SYNAGOGES SIDE BY SIDE WITH MOSQUES It would be a quite incorrect assumption to think that Bursa’s urban life is overwhelmed by a religious vibe created by the mosques. The city also features some major and invaluable churches and synagogues.

Perhaps the French Church built in the 19th century is the youngest of all. And probably Church of Helena Konstantinos is the oldest. It dates back to as early as the 4th century. It is located on the Manastır Island of Uluabat Lake. And the Koimesis Church which was built in the 8th century and named after its frescos depicting the death of Mother Mary, is located to the east of İznik. The name of another major church in İznik is the Church of Saint Tryphon. This church was ordered by Byzantine Emperor Theodoros Laskaris II and built in the 13th century in memory of Saint Tryphon. There is also the Kumkaya Church in Mudanya which was built during the reign of Byzantine Emperor Konstantinos Porphyrogenetos. And the two major synagogues in Bursa are Gerus and Ets Ahayim synagogues…

Built in early 19th century, the house was built totally of wood and is one of the most impressive examples of civic architecture in the world. Its interior is all-original.

And the Ottoman House Museum located right across the Murat II Kulliye in Muradiye neighborhood, is one of the oldest houses in Bursa that are still intact. Its layout plan and decorations carry signs of architectural influence from the 17th century.

And the İznik Museum, which was built in 1388 in memory of Nilufer Hatun, the mother of Sultan Murat I, is one of the best examples of 14th century Ottoman architecture. The Museum features numerous pieces from a long period of time ranging from prehistoric era until the Ottoman era, collected from İznik area. Another important museum in Iznik is the Hagia Sophia Museum. Originally built as a church in the 4th century, the building was renovated after the earthquake in the 11th century and converted into a mosque by Orhan Gazi. İznik is also famous for its antıque tile furnaces and the Roman Amphitheatre. Excavations at the antique furnaces and the amphitheater are still underway.

Havalimanı, Bursa’nın doğusunda ve Bursa şehir merkezine uzaklığı 52 kilometre olan Yenişehir ilçesinin sınırları içerisinde bulunuyor. Havalimanı, yalnızca Yenişehir değil, çevresinde bulunan İznik, İnegöl gibi tarihi ve kültürel yönden büyük önem arz eden yerleşim yerlerinin de kalkınmasında önemli rol oynuyor.

GENİŞLETME ÇALIŞMASI SONRASINDA BÜYÜK UÇAKLARI DA AĞIRLAYABİLİYOR Bursa şehir merkezine yakın, Yunuseli semtinde yer alan Bursa Havalimanı’nın büyük gövdeli yolcu ve kargo uçaklarının iniş-kalkışına elverişli olmaması (pist ebadı: 1395 metre x 30 metre) ve modern terminal ve tesislerin inşa edilmesi isteğiyle Yenişehir ilçesinin 10 kilometre batısında bulunan mevcut Hava Kuvvetleri Komutanlığı envanterindeki askeri havalimanının sivil trafiğe açılmasına karar verildi. Bu kapsamda, mevcut askeri piste (07R-25L) paralel olarak yeni bir pist (07L/25R) inşa edildi. Ayrıca altı park yerine sahip apron, apronla pisti birbirine bağlayan bir taksi yolu, terminal binası, ek hizmet binaları, araç yolu, seyrüsefer yardımcısı cihazlar (birer adet ILS, VOR, NDB ve Marker ile iki adet DME cihazı) inşa edildi ve Devlet Hava Meydanları İşletmesi’ne teslim edildi.

Bu şekliyle Bursa hem oldukça modern bir terminale sahip oldu; hem de 2.993 metre x 45 metre ebadında bir piste kavuştu. Yeni yapılan pist, ILS’nin yanı sıra pist merkez hattı ve tekerlek temas ışıklarını da içeren ileri bir aydınlatma sistemiyle (CAT II) teçhiz edildi.

Havalimanında 146 otomobil, 11 otobüs ve sekiz engelli aracı olmak üzere toplam 165 araçlık otopark mevcut.

With its international status, Bursa-Yenişehir Airport is within the borders of Yenisehir district which is 52 km east of Bursa. The airport contributes to the development of not only Yenisehir but also its surrounding cities like İznik and Inegol which have high historic and cultural potential.

NOW ACCOMODATES LARGE AIRCRAFTS AFTER THE EXPANSION WORKS Because the Bursa Airport which is located in Yunuseli neighborhood which is very close to Bursa city center, does not have the capacity to handle large passenger and cargo aircrafts (track size 1395 meters x 30 meters) and because of preference for modern terminals and facilities it’s been decided to convert the military airport used by the Turkish Airforces which is 10 km to the north of Yenişehir district, into a civil airport. As part of this project, a new track (07L/25R) has been added to the existing track (07R-25L) which was previously used by military aircrafts.

Also, apron with six parking spaces, a taxi track connection the apron and the main track, a terminal building, additional service buildings, and a road for motor-vehicle traffic have been constructed and various navigation devices (an ILS, VOR, NDB and a Marker and two DME devices) have been installed before the finished airport was transferred to SAA. With this project Bursa now has a modern terminal as well as a large track with dimensions of 2.993 meters x 45 meters.

The newly constructed track has been equipped with an advanced illumination system (CAT II) that contains wheel contact lights as well as and ILS and track main line illumination. The airport also has a parking lot with a capacity of 165 vehicles which can accommodate 146 passenger cars, 11 buses and 8 disabled-owned vehicles.

INCREASING NUMBER OF INTERNATIONAL FLIGHTS Bursa-Yenişehir Airport serves 24/7 and the total terminal area of the airport is 5.600 square meters and has a capacity of 1 million and 500 thousand passengers per year...

Yes, both because of abundance of people and because of the ambiguity of words... English, Arabic and French all mixed up. In an incredible way. We need to find out about our own language. Like, why did we call wind ‘wind’ or a breeze ‘breeze’.

After your novel titled ‘When the Rain Stops’ and your novel titled ‘Apprentice of the Candy Seller’ which is about your life actually, you wrote ‘I Was Once a Tree’. But most people don’t know that you are a writer at the same time.

I don’t reveal my self a lot. I’ve had some medical conditions, it was in my brain stem, maybe it’s because of that too. The doctor said it is like a bunch of daisies. One of the capillary vessels formed a blood clot there. But I am thankful to God. I’ve seen worse.

Bu hassasiyetin sebebi, biraz da yaşadıklarınız, daha doğrusu yaşayamadıklarınız mıdır? İnsanın başına ne gelirse hanımefendi, bilgisizlikten gelir, cehaletten gelir. Gerçi bilgisizlikle cehaletin arası biraz açık. Cahillik başka, bilgisizlik başka. Okumayan bir insanın yanına gittiğiniz zaman kültür akabilir ondan... Oturmasıyla, kalkmasıyla, konuşmasıyla kültürlüdür anlarsınız ama bilgisi olmayabilir, o başka. Bence okumak bir yere kadar mutlaka devlet politikası olmalı. Devletin okutmasının mecbur olması lazım. En azından liseye kadar. Ben dışarıdan bitirdim okulları. Babamı öldürdüler kalakaldım.

Ama okumayı çok seviyordum. Hatta mahalledeki çocuklara ders veriyordum. Şekercide çalışırken bir hamal öğretti bana okumayı. İlk okuduğum kelime de ‘Adana’dır. O üç harfle başladım.

Bugün bir şey okudum mesela: aşk acısının en büyük ilacı dertli şarkılarmış. İngilizler bulmuş. Hani bir piyanist şarkıcı var erkekle evlendi, işte o bulmuş, neydi adamın ismi, çok ünlü?

In your book ‘I Was Once a Tree’ you frequently emphasize the importance of education. And in your book ‘Apprentice of the Candy Seller’ you were telling us why you couldn’t go to school and how life was difficult for you. So what’s the reason behind, I mean, is it what you’ve been through our maybe what you couldn’t be through?

What I believe is that, whatever happens to you happens because of illiteracy or being uninformed. In fact being uninformed and illiteracy are a little different. They’re both different things. You can meet an uneducated guy only to find out he knows a lot and educated himself and you can see this in his manners, the way he talks, I mean you can tell he is sophisticated but he may not be knowledgeable. I think state must enforce education up to a level. At least until high school.

I received my diploma without attending school.

They killed my father and I was startled and left alone with nothing. But I loved going to school.

I was even tutoring kids in the neighborhood.

When I was working at the candy store, a porter taught me how to read and write. The first I could read was Adana. I started with those three words. But I guess if I had gone to school, I couldn’t have become an artist.

So what would you be?

Probably a politician. My father used to tell people I would become a Pasha. I think he saw the star in my forehead. Because you can see it only in children. He used to say “I would even sell my jacket to send him to school, because he is going to become a pasha one day”. But it didn’t happen.

Isn’t it better to become the pasha of people rather than being just a pasha? Like Zeki Muren. People call him the Pasha.

I read something today, it said ‘best medicine for the pain of love is sad songs’. It is a British saying. You know that pianist, he married a guy, what was his name, he is famous?

O işte o... Kalp yarasının, yaralı kalbin, sızlayan kalbin en büyük ilacının yanık şarkılar olduğunu bulmuşlar. Bunun cevabını biz veremiyorduk mesela. Araştıran da yoktu. “Damardan söylüyor” diyorlardı. Nedir damardan? Demek ki bunun bir mesajı varmış.

Araştırmadıkları için biz de öyle söylüyorduk. Aşıkların arasında tercüman oluyorduk demek ki. Çocuk aşık mesela ama derdini anlatamıyor, bizim şarkılar da tercümanlık yapıyor. Ağlıyor o da, deşarj oluyor. Ağlamak insanı gerçekten boşaltır.

Yes that’s him... He said that the best medicine for the heart in pain and grief is the sad songs. We just couldn’t find an answer to this. And nobody bothered to think over it. They used to say “He is singing touchy songs”.

But what do you mean by ‘touchy’. So there was a message to be given.

Because nobody tried to understand the logic behind, we called it that name. We were kind of expressing the feelings of lovers. The guy is in love but can’t express his emotions and our songs express them for him. And he cries and relaxes. Crying relaxes you a lot really.

Kitaptan öğreniyoruz ki, siz de her konuda derdini kolay söyleyebilen bir insan değilsiniz. Neden öyle? İçine kapanık bir insanım. Öyle yetiştirildik. Annemiz babamızı çok genç yaşta kaybettiği için korktu mu ne yaptıysa, bizi çekingen yetiştirdi. Terbiyemizi öyle verdiler.

What we understand from the book is that, you’re not that good in telling people about your problems, why is it so?

I am an introvert person. It’s about upbringing. My mother lost my father when we were young and maybe she was scared so this made us grow us as timid guys too. It’s about upbringing.

Rahatsız mısınız bu huyunuzdan?..

Hayır memnunum hayatımdan. Benim yaptıklarımı başkaları yapsaydı her çıktıkları programda anlatırlardı şimdi. Ben öyle değilim. Beni halk takdir etsin, niye anlatayım ki?..

Are you comfortable about being so?..

Yes I am. If somebody else had done what I’ve done in life, they would be on all TV channels talking about their life stories. I’m not like that. I let my people appreciate it, why would I tell them.

But in your book, you mention your worth quite a lot. You even whine about it and resent people...

Neden saklayayım yaşadıklarımı?.. Filmlerdeki başarımı neden saklayayım?.. Gidin sorun, kime sorarsanız sorun. Sahne sanatçılarına sorun; İbrahim Tatlıses’e, Muazzez Abacı’ya, Muazzez Ersoy’a, Bülent Ersoy’a… Hepsiyle sahne aldım ben. Yalanlayamazlar. Göğsümü gere gere yazıyorum. Bunlar yaşanmasaydı yazmazdım, yazamazdım.

Yazı sizin için neyin aracı, ne ifade ediyor? Önüne gelen bir şey söylüyor. Yalan konuşuyorlar. O zaman da canım sıkılıyor.

Her zaman bir şeylerin ispatı değil herhalde yazı sizin için. Sonuçta romanınız da var. Roman yazmaya devam ettiğinizi de söylediniz...

Zaman zaman bu gerçeklere değiniyorum, zaman zaman da roman çıkıyor. Şimdi iki tane daha var sırada bekleyen. Bitirdim aslında ama bir daha elime almam lazım. Bir süre sonra da bak bak bıkıyor insan. Diyor ki “Yeter artık. Böyle iyi”. Çünkü onun sonu yok. Bu da yetmiyor ama. Zaman geçtikten sonra yeni bir romanı düşünmeye başlıyorsunuz.

Nedir sıradakilerin hikayesi?

Onlar macera... Bir tanesi ikiz kız kardeşlerin hikayesi; biri Amerika’da, biri burada... Çok fantastik bir şey. Diğeri de aşk üzerine; aşkını söyleyemeyen bir genç adamın bir kızın hayatını mahvetmesine bağlı.

Kız da onu seviyor ama çok zengin bir ailenin kızı. Çocuk yanlarında çalışan bir işçi ama aileden biri gibi de... Okul çağı gelince başka yere gidiyor, dayısı var İstanbul’da çok kuvvetli. Bir türlü anlatamıyor derdini kıza, gururu çok fazla kırıldığından çekip gidiyor sonunda.

Filmlerinizin etkisi vardır kuşkusuz ikincisinde.

Alakası yok. Ben istiyorum ki zamanında arabesktir diye yasak ettikleri, aşağıladıkları hayranlarıma okuma alışkanlığı kazandırayım. Bu bana yeter de artar bile. Söylüyorlar da “Ferdi Ağabey senin kitaplarınla okumaya başladık” diye.

Hayranlardan bahsedince Müslüm Gürses’in cenazesinde siz de vardınız. Hayranlarının cenazesini nasıl sahiplendiklerini görmüşsünüzdür. Çok duygulandırıcıydı bu görüntü değil mi?

Ya düşünebiliyor musun? Bu parayla pulla yapılamaz. Mümkün değil bu sevgiyi parayla kazanmak!

Ne hissettiniz peki cenazedeki bu Müslüm Gürses sevgisini görünce?

Yaşarken çok yaşadık o sevgiyi. Ben öldükten sonra beni kalabalık sevenlerim kaldırmış, kaldırmamış önemli değil.

Gideceksin bir toprağa gömüleceksin. Bu ölüm denen şeye bakarım ben. Ölüm bir defa en büyük hasrettir. Kaçmak mümkün değil.

Angelina Jolie bile ölümden korktuğu için daha hastalanmadan memelerini aldırtıyor. Benim inandığım bir şey varsa doğmasını biliyorsan ölmesini de bileceksin. Kabulleneceksin yani.

somebody tells someone else’s story, he is either exaggerating or making things up. That’s why I wanted to tell my own story. Why would I hide what I’ve been through. Why would I hide my success in movies. Go and ask whom ever you like. Ask performers like me, ask İbrahim Tatlıses, Muazzez Abacı, Muazzez Ersoy or Bülent Ersoy… I shared the same stage with all of them.

They would prove me correct. I am proud to write all of these. I wouldn’t write them unless I had lived them.

So what does writing mean for you?

Everybody’s talking about something. They’re lying and that pisses me off.

Perhaps, writing does not always mean proving something. You also have a novel. You said you continue to write novels.

Sometimes I write about reality and sometimes a novel comes out. There are two more I’m working on. Actually they’re finished but I need to go over them again. And after a time you get bored looking at the same thing. And you go “That’s enough. This is ok”. Because there is no end to that. But that’s not enough for me. After a time I started thinking about another novel.

So what’s the story in these new novels?

They are action...One is about twin sisters, one living in US and one here.

It is quite fantastic. And the other one is about love, it is about a young man unable to express his love to a girl and ruining the life of the girl in the end. The girl is in love with him too but she is from a wealthy family. The guy is their employee but he is also like he is from the family. When he grows up and has to go to school, he leaves the house and he has a very powerful uncle living in Istanbul. He just can’t express his feelings to the girl and in the end he just walks away because his pride was hurt badly.

I can easily say that your movies had a great influence on the second one.

No not really. What I want to do is give my people, who were once despised as being too arabesque, the habit of reading. That’s more than enough for me. They tell me “Ferdi, thanks to your novels we started reading”.

Talking about fans, you too were at Müslüm Gürses’s funeral. You saw how his fans showed their gratitude towards him. It was a very touchy moment right?

Can you imagine, it is not something that money can buy. You can’t buy so much love with money!

So how did you feel when you saw all that love for Muslum Gurses?

We saw it when he was alive too. I don’t care if there were a lot fans at my funeral after I die. We will all go under the ground one day. I care about this thing called death. Death is the greatest longing. You can’t escape death. Even Angelina Jolie is having her breasts removed before she gets sick just because of her fear of death. What I believe is that, you should see death just as normal as birth itself. You need to accept it.

Do you think a celebrity feels to lonely when he no longer has his fans around him and when he is no longer on stage? I mean do you ever feel like that?

No, just the opposite, I feel relieved. You are more relaxed like that.

Kalabalıklar azalınca ünlü kişinin etrafından, çekilince sahnelerden, çok yalnız hissediyor mudur kendisini?

Mesela siz yalnız hissediyor musunuz kendinizi?

Hayır, daha bile rahatım. Artık daha rahat yaşıyorsunuz. Çünkü çok insan gördüm gerçekten. Sahnelerdeki o başarılar. 100 bin, 200 bin kişiye verdiğim Gülhane Parkı konseri mesela. Kapıdan insan giremezdi. Bunların hepsini yaşadım ben. Ondan sonra yalnızlık falan sorun değil benim için.

Bir de yazıyorsunuz tabii. O da önemli bir arkadaş olmalı?

En iyi arkadaşlarım kitaplar. Yazarların anlattıkları, oradaki kahramanlar.

Because I’ve really met a lot of people. All that success on stage. Like the Gülhane Park concerts I performed for 100 thousand to 200 thousand people. People couldn’t walk in from the doors. I’ve been through all that stuff. So being alone is no longer an issue for me.

And of course writing should be keeping you occupied, right?

Books are my best friends. The story that the authors tell is about the characters in the book.

Which character had the most influence on you?

Now I’m reading Ahmet Altan, it’s a story in a town. An interesting story.

Entelektüellere kırgınlığım yok da, aşağı görüyorlar insanı.

Dünyanın en kötü şeyi insanı aşağı görmektir. Buradan çıkıp siz bir yerin genel müdürü olabilirsiniz.

Toto loto tutturabilirsiniz, insansınız. Ben sizi şimdi nasıl hor görebilirim? Her şey insan için. İtilmişlik kakılmışlığı ondan sevmiyorum. Olmasa İbo olmazdı, Müslüm olmazdı, ben olmazdım.

Hepimiz fakirlikten gelmiş insanız.

Derslerimizi o insanlardan aldık biz. Nasıl oturursun kalkarsın, edebinle nasıl konuşursun, biz onu yaşayarak aldık. Bir de o tarafı var işin. İnsanı katiyen hor görmeyeceksiniz. O anki değerini ona göre verip, kırmadan, incitmeden arkanızı döner gidersiniz. Ne oldu sonra bunlar, arabeskçi diyenler, TRT’ciler?.. TRT’de şarkılarımız gümbür gümbür arşivlere girdi. Ne oldu yani? Ben bunu anlatmak istiyorum. İbo, Müslüm deyince, birinin ‘İmparator’, diğerinin ‘Baba’ lakapları var. Ama siz hep Ferdi Tayfur’dunuz.

Ben bir garip Ferdi Tayfur’um işte. Benim felsefem bu.

“Babam beni okutsaydı asılırdım” diye yazıyorsunuz kitabınızda. Ne yapar da asılırdınız mesela?

Yalanı sevmiyorum ben. Niye yani yalan söylüyor insan, sebep ne? Kendine güvenen bir insansam ben, niye yalan söyleyeyim? Değerli bir arkadaşım geçen gün şöyle dedi: “İstanbul’un yarısı yarısından geçiniyor.”

Düşün yani. Ne kadar tuhaf bir şey…

Asılmak deyince benim aklıma Deniz Gezmiş geliyor, Erdal Eren geliyor mesela…

Olabilirdim. Bir Deniz Gezmiş olabilirdim; yalan söylemeyi sevmiyorum. Eğri oturup doğruyu konuşmamız gerekiyor.

Intellectuals as well get their share in the book. Why are you so angry with them?

I’m not angry or something, it’s just that they despise people. It is evil to despise other people. You can be a top manger or win the lottery but you’re still a human. How can I despise you? Everything is meant to be for humans.

That’s why I don’t like it when people despise others.

Otherwise we wouldn’t have had Ibo or Müslüm or me.

We all came from poverty.

Those people taught us a lot.

The way you talk to people, your manners and common courtesy etc. we learned all that stuff from experience.

That’s another aspect of it.

You should never despise somebody. In worst case, just turn your back and walk away if you can’t communicate with someone. Look at what happened to all of those who despised us for singing arabesque music, those TRT guys remember?

Now our songs are all over TRT radio chars. What happened tell me? That’s what I’m trying to say.

Talking about Ibo or Müslüm, you know they all have nicknames. One is the ‘Emperor’ and the other one is “Godfather”. But you’ve always been Ferdi Tayfur.

Well, I am the poor, weirdo Ferdi Tayfur, that’s my philosophy In your book you say “I would be hung if I had gone to school”. Why do you think so?

Well I don’t like lying. Why do people lie? I am a man with self-confidence, why would I lie? A valuable friend of mine said the other day “Half of Istanbul is living on the other half”. Imagine, how weird that is...

Talking about being hung, I remember Deniz Gezmiş or Erdal Eren …

Yes, I could be one of them. I could be another Deniz Gezmiş; I don’t like lying to people. You need to sit crooked but talk straight.

Do you think telling the truth has something to do with education?

I’m sure it has. Struggling to make a living is really something strange. Plus, the achievements you make when you’re young change you a lot. They say your personality shapes after 25 and becomes your character. Now 18 year olds talk like the 70 year olds. They talk non-stop. Believe me it’s all a lie. It’s just gossip, nothing that comes from education or reading.

Peki doğruları söylemenin okumakla bir ilgisi var mıdır?

Vardır, vardır... Geçim derdi denilen şey çok değişik bir şey. Bir de gençliğin verdiği başarılar falan değiştiriyor insanı. 25 yaşından sonra kişilik kazanmaya başlarmış insan, karakter oluşurmuş. Şimdi 18’indekiler 70 yaşındaki adam gibi konuşuyor. Çenesi hiç durmuyor. İnanın bana yalan. Kulaktan dolma, okumakla ilgili değil.

Kitapta sizi fazlasıyla yaraladığı görülen olaylardan biri de 80 Darbesi’nin ertesi günü bir gazetede çıkan Yılmaz Güney ile çekilmiş fotoğrafla verilen “Ferdi Tayfur bir zamanlar eli silahlı militandı” başlıklı haber. Nereden geliyor militanlığınız?..

Yılmaz Güney’in hapisten izinli çıktığı oğlunun sünnet düğününde çekilmiş bir fotoğrafı koymuşlar. Yılmaz Güney elini omzuma atmış.

Yazmışlar işte; “Ferdi Tayfur Yılmaz Güney’e yaklaşmakla davaya ihanet mi etti? Geçmişte eli silahlı militandı” diye. Hep uydurma. Ne yapabilirsiniz şimdi? Tekzip ettiler sonra tabii...

Tekzip de çok fena yalnız; bir yanda yarı çıplak Ahu Tuğba, bir yanda Yılmaz Güney, “İkisini de seviyorum” başlığı...

Olsun, önemli değil. Avukat “Devam ettir” dedi ama ben istemedim.

Karınız Necla Nazır kendisini dine verdiğinde neler yaşadınız?

Tutunduğu bir ilahi kudrettir o. Her insanın inancında bir ilahı kudret vardır; düşünce olarak, hayal olarak sarılır. Bunlar hep sığındığımız düşüncelerdir. O hayat tarzı ona ait, ona bir şey söyleyemem.

Kitapta kendisinden büyük bir sevgiyle bahsediyorsunuz.

Tabii, konuşamadıklarımı yazmışım.

Neden konuşamadınız? Öyle bir konu açılmıyordu yani. Olmadı, kopukluk oldu. Zaten karı koca olmak çok önemli bir iş değildir, önemli olan iyi arkadaş olmanız.

Yaşam alışkanlığı, elinin tadı olsun, bilgisi olsun, hal hatır sormak olsun, birlikte bir diziyi, haber programını yorumlamakta olsun…

Bütün bunlar hayatın içinde birbirine bağlı şeyler. Bu olmazsa ayrı koltuklarda oturur durursun.

Orhan Gencebay’ın karısı Sevim Hanım’ı ne kadar takdir ettiğinizi yazıyorsunuz bir de, bu ilişkiye ne kadar özendiğinizi... Nedir Sevim Hanım’ın özelliği?

Sevim Hanım akıllı bir kadındır, aşırı akıllıdır. Orhan Ağabey zampara mı? Değildi… Değil miydi yani? O sektörde kaparlardı olmasa dahi…

Devamlı yanındaydı, devamlı telefonda kadıncağız. Allah için bunu kabul etmek lazım.

Sizi kaptı mı aynı sektör bu durumda?

Kulisime gelen herhangi biri benim kardeşimdir. Ellerini atarlar omzuma, fotoğraf çekerler; tık tık tık tık tık o kadar süredir. Çünkü o kafasında Ferdi Tayfur’u yüce dağlar gibi erişilmez biri olarak kurgulamış. Olur mu böyle bir şey? Allah korusun.

One of the things, according to your book, that seems to have hurt you a lot was a news item on the papers in the next day of the military takeover of 1980 where it said “Ferdi Tayfur was once an armed militant”. So where does your status as a militant come from?

It was a photograph of Yılmaz Güney on the day he was released from jail. It was at the circumcision feast of his son. In the picture he is right next to me with his arm on my shoulder. And they wrote “Is Ferdi Tayfur betraying his cause by moving closer to Yılmaz Güney? Was he an armed militant in the past?”. It’s all made up. But what can you do? Of they later refuted it.

But the refutation it was worse than the original news; they featured your picture with a naked picture of Ahu Tuğba on one side and a picture of Yılmaz Güney on the other and it said “I love both of them’’.

That’s ok, not a big deal. My lawyer told me to take it further but I didn’t want to.

How did you feel about it when your wife Necla Nazır devoted herself to religion?

That’s a divine power she found strength in. Every person has an element of divine power in his/her faith., which he/she can embrace as an ideology or an envision. These are all thoughts we take shelter in. That’s her life style, I can’t judge her.

In the book, you’re talking very highly of her, your words are full of so much love.

Of course, I wrote what I couldn’t talk about.

Why didn’t you talk about it?

I mean neither of us raised the subject. There was lack of communication at one time. I mean it is not being husband and wife that matters, it is being friends that matters. It becomes a habit after a time, I mean you get used to what she cooks for you, talks about etc, or like making comments on a TV program or news etc... These are all interconnected in life. If you don’t have it you’d be sitting in separate couches at home.

You also talk about how much you appreciate Orhan Gencayabay’s wife Sevim Hanım, how much you envy their relationship. So what is so special about Sevim Hanım?

Sevim hanım is a smart woman, I mean really smart. Was Orhan Ağabey a womanizer? He wasn’t... You mean he wasn’t? Even if he wasn’t women wouldn’t leave a guy in his position alone...

She was always with him, always on the phone or something.

You need to appreciate that.

So did you find yourself in a similar position?

Anyone coming to my backstage is my brother or sister. They put their arms on my shoulder and have pictures taken and that’s all the time I spend with them. Because he/she imagines Ferdi Tayfur at the top of some mysterious mountains. I can’t imagine anything like that with them. Heaven forbid.

Diyarbakır was faced with tremendous immigration

1990’lı yıllarda yoğun göç alan ve ciddi

altyapı ve konut sorunu yaşayan Diyarbakır, kentin Nazım İmar Planı’nın tamamlanmasıyla birlikte artık önünü görüyor. Yeni Bağlar ve Kayapınar semtleri başta olmak üzere planlı ve modern şehirleşme almış başını gidiyor. 10-12 katlı, geniş bulvarlı altyapısı tamamlanmış bölgeler, şehrin cazibe merkezlerini oluşturuyor.

Yeni Diyarbakır’ın gelişimi nüfusun yoğun olduğu tarihi Suriçi’ne de yarıyor. Göçün ağır yükü altında bunalan tarihi Suriçi bölgesi de Koruma Amaçlı İmar Planı’nın yapılmasıyla daha rahat nefes almaya başladı. Diyarbakır Büyükşehir Belediyesi tarafından onaylanıp yürürlüğe konulan Suriçi Koruma Amaçlı İmar Planı’na göre şehrin geleneksel bir-iki katlı taş binaların, dar köçelerin (sokaklar) korunması hedefleniyor. Suriçi’ndeki dört mahallede yürütülen kentsel dönüşüm çalışmaları kapsamında bine yakın aile kentin yeni bölgelerinde yapılan toplu konutlara taşınıyor. With the demolition of 510 structures near the ramparts, urban transformation projects carried out in four neighborhoods and numerous renovation projects here and there on most streets, Surici area is getting ready for culture and faith tourism. In this city with increased awareness to protect historic structures and to utilize them as tourist attractions, historic heritage such as the Great Mosque of Diyarbakır, Surp Giragos Church, Cemilpasa Caravanserai and Ongozlu Bridge are constantly being renovated.

5.5 KİLOMETREDE 560 TARİHİ YAPI Ünlü Fransız arkeolog Prof. Dr. Albert Gabriel’in ‘Açık Hava Müzesi’ olarak nitelendirdiği tarihi Suriçi, 5.5 kilometrelik surlarla çevrili bulunuyor.

37 çeşme, iki medrese, 10 kilise, 32 cami ve mescid, iki çarşı, beş han, 12 hamam, bir saray ve bunları çevreleyen İçkale ile Diyarbakır Surları, bugüne kadar kentin belli başlı anıtsal nitelikteki tarihi eserleri olarak biliniyor.

Ancak 2009 yılından bu yana Müze Müdürlüğü ve KUDEB’in (Koruma Uygulama ve Denetleme Bürosu) çalışmalarıyla üzeri boyanmış, sıva yapılmış, kat çıkılmış pek çok sivil mimari eser tespit edildi. Buna göre tarihi Suriçi’nde toplam 424 sivil mimari eserin tescili yapıldı ve Kültür Varlıkları Envanteri’ne kaydedildi.

560 HISTORIC BUILDINGS WITHIN 5.5 KİLOMETER LONG RAMPARTS The historic Suriçi, termed ‘An Outdoor Museum’ by famous French archeologist Prof. Dr. Albert Gabriel, is surrounded by 5.5 km long ramparts.

37 fountains, two madrasahs, 10 churches, 32 mosques and masjids, two bazaars, five caravanserais, 12 Turkish Baths, a palace and the inner fortress surrounding all of these structures as well as the Diyarbakır ramparts, are known as the major monumental historical structures of the city. However since 2009, as a result of the inspections carried out by the Museum Administration and KUDEB (Bureau of Protection, Implementation and Inspection) numerous civic architectural structures covered with paint or plaster were detected. As a result of these inspections, a total of 424 civic architectural structures of historic nature in Suriçi were registered and recorded in the Inventory of Cultural Assets.

ULU CAMİ Anadolu’nun en eski camisi olan Ulucami, İslam dünyasının en kutsal beşinci harem-i şerifi olarak kabul edilir. 3 bin yıllık tarihi bulunan, önceleri tapınak, havra ve kilise olarak kullanılan Ulucami, Selçuklu, Artuklu, İnaloğulları ve Osmanlı dönemindeki eklemelerle pek çok dönem ve kültürün özelliklerini yansıtıyor.

639 yılında İslam ordularının Diyarbakır’a girişiyle birlikte Mar-Toma Kilisesi’nin üçte biri camiye çevrilir. Daha sonra kilisenin tamamı camiye çevrilir ve uzun yıllar İslamiyet’in dört mezhebine hizmet eder. Halen Şafii ve Hanefi mezheplerine hizmet veren Ulucami’nin üzerindeki kitabelerden hangi dönemlerde onarıldığını öğrenebiliyoruz.

RENOVATION PROJECTS COMPLETED Having discovered its historic and cultural heritage, Diyarbakır is now working hard to make all that heritage visible to the world. As part of these efforts, 510 residential and office buildings around the ramparts have been demolished and the area has been converted into parks.

The newly installed illumination system around the ramparts has helped reveal the beauty of the ramparts. Apart from that, numerous renovation project on Gazi, İzzetpaşa and Melikahmet streets in Suriçi has been put into practice. Dağkapı Square has been redesigned in a manner to match the surrounding historic vibe and the bus terminal in Mardinkapı has been demolished. On the other hand restoration of other major monumental and civic architectural structures is still under way. Here are some of those structures under restoration...

GREAT MOSQUE OF DİYARBAKIR The Great Mosque of Diyarbakır, the oldest mosque in Anatolia is accepted as the fifth most sacred Harem-i Şerif of the world of Islam.

With a 3.000 years of history, The Great Mosque of Diyarbakır was used as a temple, synagogue and a church in different periods in history and thanks to many additions to the building during Seljuk, Artuklu, İnaloğulları and Ottoman periods, it carries the cultural and architectural signs of different eras and societies.

With the invasion of Diyarbakir by Islamic armies in 639 A.C. one third of the Mar-Toma Church was converted into a mosque. Later on the whole church was converted into a mosque and served the four different sects of Islam. Looking at the inscriptions on the mosque which currently serves the Shafii and Hanafi sects, one can tell the dates of repair works carried out on the mosque.

Şimdiki halini aldığı onarım, İnaloğlu Ebru Mansur İlaldı tarafından 1117-1118’de alt katı, 1124-125 yılında ise üst katı yapılır.

Bezemeleri, hat yazıları, eşsiz ahşap oymalarıyla göz kamaştıran caminin kuzey kısmının avluya bakan bölümünde Anadolu Selçuklu Sultanı Gıyasüddin Keyhusrev’in 1241 tarihli, Artuklu Melik Salih’in 1330 tarihli ve Osmanlı Padişahı IV. Mehmed’in birer fermanı yer alır.

Ulucami’nin batı kesiminin önemli bir bölümünü Akkoyunlu Padişahı Uzun Hasan’ın onardığı bu bölümün dış tarafındaki kitabede anlaşılıyor. Caminin kuzeybatı bölümünü Osmanlılar devrinde Atak Beyi Emir Ahmed Zırki tarafından 1828’de yaptırılır. Ulucami’nin 1824 yılında esaslı bir tamir gördüğü, cami minaresinin yıldırım düşmesi sonucu yıkılmasıyla 1839’da onarıldığı üzerinde yazılı kitabelerden anlaşılıyor. Diyarbakır Vakıflar Bölge Müdürlüğü’nün iki yıllık çalışmanın ardından hazırlanan projenin ardından cami yeniden restorasyona alınır. Camideki bütün mekânları, kütüphane, Zinciriye ve Mesudiye medreseleri komple bir külliye halinde restore edilecek. Çalışmalar ODTÜ, İTÜ, Marmara ve Dicle üniversitelerinden bilim heyetinin gözetiminde yürütülüyor. Cami önündeki Celal Güzelses Yeraltı Çarşısı da kaldırılacak. Selçuklu geleneğini yansıtan Anadolu’daki en erken ve en anıtsal eseri niteliğindeki Ulucami, planı ve mimari açısından Şam’daki Emeviye Camisi ile benzerlik gösteriyor. Avlusunda sibernetik biliminin babası sayılan ve ilk robotu yapıp çalıştırdığı kabul edilen El Cezeri’nin yaptığı güneş saatinin de yer aldığı Ulucami, halen yerli ve yabancı turistlerin ziyaret ettiği mekânların başında yer alıyor.

SURP GİRAGOS KİLİSESİ Diyarbakır Suriçi’nde bulanan Surp Giragos Kilisesi Ermeni mimari tarihinin en önemli yapıtlarından biri olarak kabul edilir. Ortadoğu’nun en büyük Ermeni kilisesi özelliğini taşıyan Surp Giragos Kilisesi kimi kaynaklara göre 1376 yılında yazılı kaynaklara göre 1517 yılında yapılır. 1827 ve 1880 yılında iki büyük yangına maruz kalan kilise 1883 yılında tekrar yapılır ve ek binalar inşa edilir. Yapılan eklemelerden sonra, ikisi kilisenin giriş katında bulunan

After Diyarbakır was included in the territory of Great Seljuk Empire, Sultan Melihşah had the mosque repaired in 1090. However following this repair, a big earthquake and fire happened in 1115 and the mosque was damaged badly. The stone arches and domes that cover the large ceilings were destroyed. The repair that gave the mosque its current shape was ordered by İnaloğlu Ebru Mansur İlaldı. The first floor was repaired between 1117-1118 and the second floor was repaired between 1124-125.

The mosque dazzles its visitors with its decorations, calligraphy works and wood works and in the northern section of the mosque facing the patio, there are the fermans of Anatolian Seljuk Emperor Gıyasüddin Keyhüsrev dated 1241, Artuklu Melik Salih dated 1330 and Ottoman Emperor Mehmed IV. A significant part of the west section of the Great Mosque of Diyarbakır was repaired after the order of Akkoyunlu Emperor Uzun Hasan as we can understand from the inscriptions on the outer part of this section. The northwest setion of the mosque was built during the Ottoman era after the order of Atak Beyi Emir Ahmed Zırki in 1828. From the tablets on the walls of the mosque one can tell that the mosque went through a major repair in 1824 and that the minaret of the mosque was repaired after being damaged by a thunderbolt in 1839.

With the restoration project developed by Diyarbakir Regional Directorate of Foundations in two years, the mosque went through another restoration phase during which all sections of the mosque, the library, Zinciriye and Mesudiye madrasahs will be renovated in the form of a Külliye. The project is carried out under the supervision of a scientific board with members from ODTÜ, İTÜ, Marmara and Dicle universities. And the Celal Güzelses Underground Bazaar in front of the mosque will be removed as well. As the oldest and most monumental piece of art in Anatolia that is a reflection of the Seljuk tradition, The Great Mosque of Diyarbakır is reminiscent of the Emeviye Mosque in Damascus in terms of its layout plan and architecture. The Great Mosque of Diyarbakır also features the solar clock designed by El Cezeri known as the designer of the first robot and the father of sibernetics science and the mosque is still among the top tourist attractions in the region.

SURP GİRAGOS CHURCH Surp Giragos Church which is located at Suriçi in Diyarbakır, is accepted as one of the most important works of the Armenian architectural history. Known as the biggest Armenian church in Middle East, Surp Giragos Church was built in 1376 according to some resources. Written sources on the other hand indicate the construction date as 1517. The church went through two big fire disasters in 1827 and 1880 and was rebuilt in 1883 with additional

Kilise’nin sol tarafındaki avludan açılan girişinde ana kiliseye bağlanmasıyla ayinler için geniş alan oranı artırılır.

Hâlâ sağlam duran Surp Hagop Şapeli de bu eklemeler döneminde inşa edilir. Surp Giragos Kilisesi tarihi boyunca farklı amaç için de kullanılır. Birinci Dünya Savaşı sırasında Alman ordularının karargâhı olan kilise, daha sonra ise Sümerbank’ın pamuk deposu olarak kullanılır. Kilisenin çan kulesi ise cami minarelerinden yüksek olduğu için 1915 yılında top atışlarıyla yıkılır. 1960 yılından itibaren tekrar ibadete açılan 3.000 metrekarelik alan üzerindeki Surp Giragos Ermeni Kilisesi, özellikle 1980 yılından sonra Ermenilerin göç etmesi sonucu terk edilir. Cemaati olmadığı için ayin yapılmayan kilise, bakımsızlık nedeniyle tavanı çöker ve kullanılamaz hale gelir. 1990’lı yılların sonlarında tamamen harabeye dönen kilise, 2011 yılında Surp Giragos Küçük Ermeni Kilisesi Vakfı ve Diyarbakır Büyükşehir Belediyesi tarafından onarılır. Çan kulesi de yapılan ve yeniden ibadete açılan kilisede zaman zaman piyano resitalleri verilir. Kilise pek çok yerli ve yabancı turistin ziyaret ettiği mekanlardan biri olma özelliğini taşır.

CEMİLPAŞA KONAĞI Suriçi’nde Alipaşa Mahallesi’nde bulunan Cemilpaşa Konağı, Diyarbakır’ın en güzel ve en büyük sivil mimari örneklerinden biridir. 1887-1888 yıllarında 23 yıl Yemen’de

With the additions, it turned into the first Armenian church in the world with seven Horans with two of them in the Women’s section on the first floor of the church, and five at the entrance. This renovation increased the capacity of the church to 3.000 people and connected the entrance from the patio side on the left to the main church area, which increased the total area used for religious ceremonies. The Surp Hagop Chapel, which is still intact, was built at the time of these renovations as well. Surp Giragos Church was used for different purposes throughout its history. It served as the headquarters for German armed forces and later on it served as the cotton warehouse of Sümerbank. Because the bell tower of the church was higher than the minarets, it got destroyed with bomb shots in 1915. Surp Giragos Church was reopened to worship in 1960 and was abandoned mostly after many Armenians immigrated in the 80s. The had no community to worship for many years and after a time its ceiling collapsed and the church became totally useless.

It turned into a complete ruin by the end of 90s and was repaired in 2011 by the Foundation of Surp Giragos Armenian Church and Diyarbakir Municipality. With this repair, a bell tower was added to the church and it was opened to worship. There are piano concerts at the church occasionally. The church is another major tourist attraction in the region as well.

CEMİLPAŞA MANSION Located in Alipaşa Neighborhood in Suriçi, the Cemilpaşa Mansion is one of the most beautiful and biggest examples of civic architecture in Diyarbakır. It was ordered by Cemil Pasha who served as the Governor of Yemen between 1887 and 1888 and was constructed

valilik yapmış olan Cemil Paşa tarafından 1888-1902 yılları arasında yapılır. Haremlik ve selamlık bölümlerinden oluşan Cemilpaşa Konağı’nda, bütün Diyarbakır evlerinde olduğu gibi mekanlar geniş avlu etrafında dizilidir. Diyarbakır’ın diğer evlerinde olduğu gibi bu konakta da bazaltın koyu ağır görünümünü hafifletmek için avluya ve eyvanlara bakan yüzeyler sönmüş kireçle yapılan beyaz renkli çiçekli ‘cıs’ adı verilen motiflerle süslenir. Yapının iki girişi vardır, ana giriş Köylü Sokak’tadır. Haremlik ve selamlığın ortasında mabeyn bölümü yer alır. Geniş havuzlu bahçesi, ahırı, misafirhanesi ve diğer bölümleriyle 2.000 metrekarelik küçük bir saray niteliğinde olan konak, taş işçiliğinin en güzel örneklerden biridir.

Odaların zemini Horasan döşemeyle kaplı, tavanlar ise ahşap olup, kirişler, genellikle kavak ağacından yapılır.

Odanın önemine göre tavan kirişleri düz olarak boyandığı gibi oyma veya boyayla eşsiz güzellikte desenlerle de bezendiği görülür.

Kışlık ve batıdaki mevsimlik bölümün arasında bulunan mutfağın, mevsimlik bölümü tarafındaki küçük bir kapıdan alttaki zerzembe olarak adlandırılan erzakların depolandığı kilere geçilebilmektedir. Diyarbakır evlerinin vazgeçilmez unsurları olan zerzembeler burada da kışlık ve mevsimlik bölümlerinin alt katlarını boydan boya çevirmekte, kalın duvarlı, bol pencereli ve yarıya kadar yeraltında oldukları için yaz-kış aynı sıcaklığı korur. Bu nedenle de her türlü yiyecek buralarda rahatlıkla depolanabilir. Dişi bazalt taşla döşeli avlunun dört bir tarafı mekanlarla çevrelenmiştir.

Diyarbakır Büyükşehir Belediyesi’nce korunmasına yönelik çalışmalar başlatılmış, öncelikle mülk sahipleriyle yapılan görüşmeler sonucunda, kamulaştırma işlemleri yapılmış ve hemen akabinde de projelendirilerek restorasyon çalışmalarına başlanır. Onarım sonrası Kent Müzesi olarak işlevlendirilecek olan konak, yeni işleviyle hem kendini hem de Diyarbakır’ın belleğini geleceğe taşıyarak çok önemli bir görevle var olmaya devam edecektir. Bu çerçevede Diyarbakır’ın tüm etnik ve inançsal grupları ile bir Arama Konferansı yapılır. Müftüden, papaza, Müze Müdürlüğü’nden Diyarbakır ile ilgili kitap yazan yazarlara kadar tüm kesimlerin katıldığı Arama Konferansı’nda müzenin nasıl şekillendirileceği belirlendi.

between 1888 and 1902. The mansion consists of Haremlik and Selamlık sections and as with all houses in Diyarbakır the house is structured around a wide patio. As with other houses in the city, in order to smoothen the gloomy appearance of the basalt used on the facades, the facades looking towards the patio and the iwans are decorated with motifs called ‘cis’ which is made using dead lime and consists of white flowers. The mansion has two entrances and the main entrance is on the Köylü Street. There is the Mabeyn section between the Haremlik and Selamlık sections. With its garden with a huge pool, its stall, guest house and other sections, the mansion with a total area of 2.000 square meters is just like a small palace and is also one of the best examples of stone masonary.

The floors of the rooms are covered with Horasan type flooring and the ceilings are wood and the beams are usually made of poplar tree. Depending on the significance of the room, ceiling beams can be plain or with motifs of incredible beauty made with engravings or painting. The kitchen is located between the winter section and the seasonal section on the west side and through a small door on the seasonal section, one can access the Zerzembe section (cellar) Erzak are stored. Zerzembe is an indispensible aspect of Diyarbakır houses and usually surrounds the bottom floors of the winter and seasonal sections of the houses and because they have thick walls, plenty of windows and are buried almost totally under the ground they can provide the same temperature both in summer and winter, making it easy to store all kinds of food in these cellars. The patio floor is covered with bazalt stone and the patio is surrounded by different sections on all four sides.

Works aimed at preservation of the mansion have already been started by Diyarbakır Municipality and as a result of the negotiations with the owners of the property, the mansion has been expropriated and the restoration works have been started right away. The mansion is planned to serve as the City Museum after the restorations and with this new function, it will continue to exist with an important mission by carrying the memories of Diyarbakır to the future.

In this regard, a Research Conference was organized with participation from all ethnical and religious groups of Diyarbakır. At this conference participated by representatives of different sectors of the society ranging from the Mufti to the priest and from the Museum Administrators to authors of books written in this area, ideas were discusses as to how to structure the new museum and decisions were made as to the new format. With this new structure,

Cemilpaşa Mansion is actually a rare piece of art that needs to be visited by tourists to discover its historic heritage.

ONGÖZLÜ KÖPRÜ Ongözlü Köprü bundan 948 yıl önce 1065 yılında Mervaniler devrinde Diyarbakır hükümdarı Nizamüddevle Nasr tarafından Sancaroğlu Ubeydoğlu Yusuf’a yaptırılır.

Diyarbakır için tarih boyunca en önemli yapıların başında gelen Ongözlü Köprü, stratejik anlamda Dicle Nehri’nin iki yakasını biri birine bağlayan bu yapı, yapılan savaşlarda daima en çok korunan mekânların başında gelir. Çünkü Diyarbakır’a geçmenin tek bağlantısını her zaman için bu köprü sağlar. Şimdilerde ‘on gözlü’ olarak anılan köprünün orijinal yapısının aslında 11 gözden ibarettir. Bunu belirleyen birçok şekilsel değişiklik vardır. Değişiklikler yapılan bir savaş öncesinde hazırlıksız yakalanan Diyarbakır beylerinin savunma amaçlı patlattığı ve sonraki dönemlerde tekrar yaptırıldığı yapılan onarımda dört gözün yerine üç gözün inşaa ettirildiği rivayet edilir. Köprü 178 metre uzunluğunda, 5.60 metre genişliğinde ve en büyük kemer açıklığı 14.70 metredir. Köprü ayaklarındaki kemerler sivri formdadır. İpek yolu üzerinden ticaret yapan kervanların da geçişini sağlayan Ongözlü Köprü büyük tonajlı araçların yükünü taşıyamayınca hasar gördü ve restore edildi. Restorasyon sırasında Bağıvar’ın ulaşımı aksayınca Diyarbakır Büyükşehir Belediyesi, Ongözlü Köprü’nün 1 kilometre aşağısında Mervani Köprüsü adıyla yeni bir köprü yapar. 160 metre uzunluğunda, 12 metre genişliğinde ve beş aralıklı yeni köprü, tarihi Ongözlü Köprü’nün yükünü üstlenir. Böylece araç trafiğine kapatılan sadece yayaların kullandığı tarihi Ongözlü Köprü turizme ve geleceğe kazandırılır.

ONGÖZLÜ BRIDGE Ongözlü Bridge was ordered by the Governor of Diyarbakır Nizamüddevle Nasr during Mervaniler era in 1065 and was designed

by Sancaroğlu Ubeydoğlu Yusuf. Throughout history, Ongözlü Bridge has been one of the most prominent architectural structures of Diyarbakır. With a strategic importance as the connection between the two sides of River Tigris, this structure has always been among the top structures that were brought under top security. Because this bridge is the only way to access Diyarbakır. The bridge is currently called ‘Ongözlü’ meaning to have ten holes but the original bridge had 11 holes. There have been many structural changes that caused this. One rumor is that, during preparations for a war, Diyarbakir was caught unprepared by the enemy and the governors of Diyarbakır ordered their commanders to send bombs to the enemy to defend the city which ultimately damaged the bridge as well. And after the war was over, three holes were built instead of the four ones destroyed with bombs. The bridge is 178 meters long and 5.60 meters wide and its widest arch is 14.70 meters. The arches on the legs of the bridge are pointy. Ongözlü Bridge also allowed access for caravans trading up and down the silk road but the bridge, after failing to carry the loads of vehicles with high tonnage, was damaged and had to go through a renovation. This restoration work interrupted with access to Bagivar area of the city after which Diyarbakir Municipality built a new bridge called ‘Mervani Bridge’ located one kilometers down the Ongözlü Bridge. This new bridge that is 160 meters long and 12 meters wide has five holes and carries all the load of Ongözlü Bridge. As a result, the historic Ongözlü Bridge is now open only to pedestrians and has become a major tourist attraction.

Unforgettable feasts of the good old Ramadans Ramazan bu yıl temmuz ayında… Geçen yıl olduğu gibi sıcaklar biraz zorlayacak oruç tutanları… Ağır yememek lazım sahurda ve iftarda… Ama bir yandan da geçmişin güzel ve leziz sofralarını yad etmek gerek… İşte size geçmişte iftar sofralarını süsleyen birkaç lezzet…

This year Ramadan will begin in July… As it was the case last year, the summer heat will be a challenge for those who plan to fast… During Suhoor and Iftar meals, one should abstain from over-eating… Yet one should also cherish the good and delicious feasts of the past… Here are some delicacies from past Iftar feasts…

Ramazan ayı şimdilerde günlük hayatın sıradanlığı içinde yaşansa da geçmişte ramazan daha gelmeden çok evvelinde hazırlıklara başlanır, her evde bu mübarek ayın gelmesine yakın haftalarda telaş giderek artardı.

Neler neler yapılmazdı ki… İftarda ve sahurda yenmek üzere her biri birbirinden lezzetli erişteler, kuskuslar, çeşit çeşit reçeller ve kuru yufkalar evin hanımları tarafından özenle hazırlanırdı. Ramazan ayı için hazırlanan bu yufkaları birkaç evin hanımları bir araya gelerek her gün bir evin ihtiyacını karşılayacak şekilde günlerce hazırlarlardı. Şimdilerde şehir merkezinde yapılmayan bu yufkalar Anadolu’nun bazı köylerinde hâlâ yapılıyor.

Hazırlanan bu kuru yufkalarla iftar ve sahur için yufka tatlısı, peynirli gözleme yapılırdı, ayrıca yufkalar sade olarak da yenilirdi.

Nowadays, Ramadan is experienced in the mediocrity of the

everyday life, however, in the past, preparations started weeks before Ramadan and every home had its own hustle and bustle when the Holy Month drew nearer. So many dishes prepared and served… Different types of noodles and couscous, each more scrumptious than the other, a variety of jams and dry leaves of fine filo pastry – all meticulously prepared by the ladies of the house for Iftar and Suhoor. The ladies of a certain number of houses would come together and prepare these leaves of fine filo pastry, specially rolled for Ramadan dishes, according to the needs of the household, whichever had its turn that day. Today these fine filo leaves are not rolled in the cities, only some villages in Anatolia continue to prepare these pastries. These handmade dry filo leaves, also preferred plain, would be used to bake sweet savory pastries and savory cheese filo pancakes for Iftar and Suhoor.

HAMUR İŞİ, PİLAV VE HOŞAFSIZ SOFRA OLMAZ Sahurda tok tutsun diye hamur işleri, erişteler, pilavlar ve hoşaf türleri masada muhakkak bulunurdu. İftar saati geldiğinde hazırlanan sofrada; türlü simit ve çörekler, çeşit çeşit reçeller, her çeşidinden peynir ve zeytin, düğün çorbası, içli yumurta, sebze ve et yemekleriyle dolmalar sofrayı süslerdi.

Sadece yemeklerde değil ramazan ayında iftardan sonra sahura kadar meydanlarda çeşitli eğlenceler düzenlenirdi. Sabah ezanına kadar şehir canlılığını korurdu. Karagöz ile Hacivat gösterileri, şimdilerde eskisi kadar ilgi görmese de geçmişte ramazan eğlencelerinin vazgeçilmezleri arasında bulunurdu.

Son yıllarda pek çok kentimizde yeniden bu geleneksel sanat canlandırılmaya çalışılıyor. İftar ile sahur arasında geçen zamanda teravih namazı için büyük camilere giden halk, namazdan sonra kahvehanelerdeki gösterileri izlemek için oralara akın ederdi.

PASTRY, RICE AND COMPOTE - A MUST IN A FEAST To feel full during the day of fasting, pastries, noodles, rice and compotes were served at Suhoor. At the time of Iftar, an assortment of bagels and buns, various types of jams, a selection of cheese and olives, Düğün Soup, stuffed eggs, vegetable and meat dishes and stuffed vegetables were an essential part of the feast.

Not only was the food the highlight of Ramadan, but different types of entertainment were held in town squares from Iftar until Suhoor time. The city would be buzzing with liveliness till the morning prayer. Although not the main attraction of the present, Karagöz and Hacivat shows had been an essential part of the Ramadan entertainment in the past. In recent years, fans have been trying to revive this traditional performance art throughout many cities.

During the time between Iftar and Suhoor, people would visit big mosques to perform the tarawih prayer and after the prayers, they would rush into coffee shops to watch these shows.

KOMŞU ASLA AÇ YATMAZDI Hali vakti yerinde olanlar evlerinin bahçelerinde kurdukları büyük iftar sofralarında dostlarının yanı sıra semtin fakirlerini de ağırlarlardı.

Ramazanın sonuna yaklaşırken bayramın gelmesine yakın ise ramazan uğurlanmaya hazırlanılır, hatta davulcuların manileri yavaş yavaş değişirdi.

Ramazanın son iftarından sonrada davulcular;

NEIGHBOURS NEVER GO TO SLEEP HUNGRY Well-endowed people would welcome not only friends but also the neighborhood’s less fortunate to their big Iftar feasts set up in their backyards. Just as the last days of Ramadan would approach and the Eid al-Fitr would draw nearer, everyone would get ready to bid farewell to the Holy Month. Even the poems of Ramadan drummers would step-by-step change. After the last Iftar meal of Ramadan, the drummers would call out;

“Gecelerin ayazına Baklavanın beyazına Gül suyundan abdest alın Buyurun bayram namazına…” diyerek tüm ahaliyi bayram namazına çağırırdı.

Bayram namazından sonra herkes evine gider ve bayram için hazırlanan yemeklerle kurulu sofraya otururdu.

Sofralarda; lokum, baklava, pilav, yaprak sarması, güllaç ve tavuk yemekleri olur, bu yemekler bayram süresince gelen tüm misafirlere ikram edilirdi.

Ramazan Bayramı’nda tanıdık tanımadık herkese yemek ikram edilmesi de ayrı bir gelenekti. Yine bir manide; “Ulucami direk ister, Söylemeye yürek ister, Benim karnım toktur ama, Arkadaşım börek ister, Alaylı olsun alaylı, Tepsisi olsun kalaylı, Yağı peyniri bolca olsun, Yimesi olsun kolaylı…” diyerek davulcu bu durumu kısaca özetlerdi. Şimdi dilerseniz ramazan ve bayram için yapılan yemeklere kısaca bir göz atalım..

“To the frost of the nights To the white of the baklawa Make an ablution with rose water Come to the Salat al Eid…” and thus summon everyone to the Eid prayers. People would go home after the prayers and eat together the specially prepared Eid dishes.

The Eid feasts would always include Turkish delight, baklawa, rice, stuffed vine leaves, Gullac (rosewater pudding), chicken dishes, and these would be served to all guests who would pay a visit during the Eid. It was also a notable tradition to serve food to everyone, whether an acquaintance or not, during the Eid. The drummers would even refer to this tradition in their poems: “The Grand mosque needs a pillar, One needs a heart to tell, My stomach is full but, My friend wants a pie, Let it be self-taught, Let his tray be tinned, Put in extra cheese, extra butter, So it will be easy to eat…”

RAMAZAN KEBABI RAMADAN KEBAB

MALZEMELER: 1 kilo parça kuzu eti, beş çok ince ramazan pidesi, 200 gram tereyağı, bir çay kaşığı damla sakızı, bir çay kaşığı karabiber, bir yemek kaşığı kakule, bir parça yağlı kağıt, iki su bardağı su, bir tatlı kaşığı tuz…

INGREDIENTS: 1 kg lamb meat, five very thin Ramadan flat breads, 200 grams butter, 1 teaspoon gum mastic, 1 teaspoon black pepper, 1 tablespoon cardamom, a piece of wax paper, 2 cups of water, 1 dessert spoon salt…

TARİFİ: Pideler hariç tüm malzeme güveç kabına konur. Üzeri yağlı kağıt kapatılarak odun fırınına verilir ya da ocakta iki saati aşkın pişirilir. Ocakta çok ağır ateşte, fırında ise orta sıcaklıkta ve ateşten uzak olmasına dikkat edilerek pişirilir. Çatala gelecek şekilde doğranan pideler bakır bir servis tepsisine konularak fırınlanır.

Pideler iyice gevretildikten sonra üzerlerine güveçten çıkarılan kuzu eti ve suyu dökülüp kısa bir süre altı ateşte tutulup servis edilir.

RECIPE: Put all ingredients except the flat breads into a crock pot. Place the wax paper over the crock pot and bake it in a wood oven or cook on the stove for 2 hours. Make sure the temperature remains at a low heat when cooking on the stove and at medium heat and away from the fire when baking in a wood oven. Hack the flat breads into small pieces, spread them on a copper serving plate and bake the bread pieces in the oven. When flat breads turn crisp, place the lamb meat on the bread pieces and pour the meat broth over the plate. Cook a bit more and then serve.

‘Cennet künkü’nü yaparken en zorlandığım kısım hiç görmediğim bir tarifi yapmak olmuştu, nasıl görünmesi gerektiğini bir türlü kavrayamıyordum.

Ancak kelime olarak künkü araştırdığımda boru anlamına geldiğini öğrendim ve nasıl yapacağını anlamış oldum. Sizlere de güncellenmiş tarfiyle aşağıda sunuyorum. Afiyetle yiyin…

The hardest part in making the ‘Cennet Künkü’ was that I had never seen this dessert before and did not know what it looked like. But when I researched the work künk, I found out that it had the meaning pipe, so I had figured out how the recipe should be prepared.

MALZEMELER: 1 kilo un, nişasta, bir rulo kaymak, 250 gram tereyağı, 1 kilo şeker, iki dilim limon, dört su bardağı su…

INGREDIENTS: 1 kg flour, starch, 1 roll clotted cream, 250 grams butter, 1 kg sugar, 2 slices of lemon, 4 cups of water…

TARİFİ: Un ve suyla hamur hazırlanır. Hazırlanan hamur nişastayla açılarak yufka haline getirilir. Her bir yufka, oklavaya sarılıp, iki ucundan itip buruşturulur. İsteğe göre içerisine ceviz içi de konabilir. Yağlı tepsiye şekil verilmiş tüm yufkalar yerleştirilir ve üzerlerine yumurta sarısı sürülür. Üstü iyice kızarana dek fırınlanır. Şerbeti için su ve tozşeker 15 dakika kaynatılır ve içine limonlar atılıp altı kapatılır.

Hazırlanan şerbet soğumaya bırakılır. Tepsideki tatlıların üzerine soğuk şurup dökülür. Tatlıları servis tabağına çıkartıldıktan ve soğuduktan sonra içlerine kaymak sıkılır. Ceviz servis edilir.

RECIPE: Mix flour and water, knead until you have dough. Add starch and roll the dough into thin filo layers. Wrap each thin layer around the rolling pin and wrinkle it by pushing from each side of the layer. You can optionally add walnuts into the wrinkled layers.

Place all wrinkled pastries on a buttered baking tray and brush them with egg yolk. Bake until golden brown. For the syrup, boil water together with sugar for 15 minutes, add the lemon slices and let it cool.

Pour the cold syrup over the pastries on the tray. Place the soaked pastries on a serving plate and put some clotted cream amidst the pastries. Serve with walnuts.

ETLİ KITIR ÇORBASI CRISP MEAT SOUP

MALZEMELER: 250 gram kuzu eti, yarım kilo yoğurt, iki

yumurta, iki su bardağı un, iki yemek kaşığı tereyağı, iki diş sarımsak, bir çay kaşığı tuz, iki su bardağı su…

TARİFİ: Kuzu eti iyice haşlanır. Un, bir yumurta, tuz ve

suyla hamur tutulur ve yarım saat dinlendirilir. Dinlenen hamur iki parçaya ayrılarak yufka şeklinde açılıp küçük küçük karelere bölünür. Diğer tarafta iyice haşlanan kuzu eti süzülerek didiklenir. Haşlanan etin suyuna iki su bardağı su ilave edilerek kaynatılmaya devam edilir. Hazırlanan kare hamurların yarısı kaynayan suya didiklenen kuzu etiyle birlikte ilave edilir. Yoğurt, ezilmiş sarmısak ve bir yumurta iyice çırpılır. Yoğurdun kesilmemesi için karışıma bir kepçe et suyu ilave edilerek çırpılmaya devam edilir. Daha sonra bu karışım çorbaya azar azar eklenir. Bir taşım daha kaynatılır. Kalan kare hamurlar tereyağında kızartılır ve çorbanın üstüne eklenerek servis edilir.

INGREDIENTS: 250 grams lamb meat, 500 grams yoghurt, 2 eggs, 2 cups of flour, 2 tablespoons butter, 2 cloves of garlic, 1 teaspoon salt, 2 cups of water…

RECIPE: Boil and cook the lamb meat. Mix flour, 1 egg, salt and water, knead, and let the dough rest for half an hour. Divide dough into half and roll until you have thin layers. Cut out small squares from these thin layers.

Remove the well-cooked lamb meat from the pot and shred it. Add 2 cups of water to the meat broth and boil.

Add half of the thin pastry squares together with the shredded lamb meat to the boiling broth. Mix yoghurt, crushed garlic and 1 egg and whisk. To prevent yoghurt from curdling, add 1 ladle of meat broth to the mixture and whisk further. Add this mixture slowly to the soup and bring it to boil. Toss the remaining thin pastry squares with butter in a pan and sprinkle them on top of the soup.

Laos’un saklı dünyasında ağır silahların, tankların, bombaların izleri hâlâ sürülebiliyor. 20 yıl önceki bombalar bugün yine elde patlayabiliyor. Ama bunun yanında vahşi doğanın bağrında filizlenen kanlı canlı bir hayat var. Yüzde 70’i orman olan ülkede yaban hayat Laos’a durmadan bunu hatırlatıyor.

In the hidden world of Laos, you can still follow the traces of heavy weapons, tanks and bombs. Bombs remaining from 20 years ago may still explode in your hands. But apart from that, there is brand new life that bloomed in the middle of wild nature. This is what wild life reminds Laos in this country 70% of which is covered with forests.

Laos, Güney Asya’nın en yoksul ülkesi...

Yoksulluğunun yanında, yalıtılmışlığıyla da dikkat çekiyor.

1975’ten bu yana komünist bir iktidar tarafından yönetilen ülkede, yalıtılmışlık 1990’larda bir nebze aşılmış. Yine de sözünü ettiğimiz kontrollü bir aşılma… Kim bilir, belki de kapı komşusu Tayland gibi turist akınına uğrayıp çağın hızlı dönüşümünden korkuyor ülke. Öte yandan denize kıyısı olmadığı için bu tür bir akın pek ihtimal dahilinde değil.

6.5 milyon nüfusu olan Laos’un kelime anlamı ‘Bin Filin Ülkesi’... İsminin hakkını verecek kadar çok sayıda fil ve daha pek çok hayvan türü bulunuyor burada: Leoparlar, kaplanlar, panterler, zehirli kertenkeleler, kobralar, timsahlar, çeşit çeşit egzotik kuşlar ve böcekler… Zaten ülkenin yüzde 70’i orman. Topraklarının dörtte üçünden fazlası dağlarla kaplı olan bu ülkede yerleşimler çoğunlukla ünlü Mekong Nehri boyunca kurulmuş. Bir de şehirle kasabaları birbirine bağlayan yarısı bozuk yollar etrafına.

Laos, the poorest country in South Asia…Apart from its poverty, it attracts attention with being isolated as well.

In Laos, which is under the communist rule since 1975, this sense of isolation was moderated during 1990s. But it was still a controlled moderation… Maybe the government is afraid that the country might be dragged into the rapid phase of change in the world after tourist invasion which was the case its next door neighbor Thailand. But chances for that to happen are pretty low as the country has no shores.

Laos’s population is 6.5 million and the word Laos means ‘Land of Thousand Elephants’… The country has too many elephants and many other animal species to prove this name correct: you have leopards, tigers, panthers, poisonous lizards, cobras, alligators, a variety of exotic birds and insects… And 70% of the country is covered with forests. More than ¾ of its land is mountains and most settlements are along the coast of famous River Mekong as well as around the poorly constructed roads that connect cities and towns. And capital Vientiane is

VİETNAM SAVAŞI’NDAN NASİBİNİ ALMIŞ Ülkenin tarihinde yalnızca Fransa etkisi yok. Amerika, Fransa’nın Hindiçin’deki sömürgelerini kaybetmesinden sonra, Kamboçya, Laos ve Vietnam’ın komünist yönetimlere geçmesini engellemek için çalışmalara başlamış. Aslında bunu ‘çalışma’ diye adlandırmak hafif kaçar, bildiğiniz ‘gizli savaş’ söz konusu olan.

Kennedy, 1961 yılında Laos içinde filizlenmekte olan komünist akımlara karşı savaşmak Laos’ta iki mevsim üzere 11 bin kişilik bir ordunun kurulmasını var sanki. Kuru dönem ise muson yağmurlarından sonra kasım ayının sonları gibi başlayıp mayıs başına kadar sürüyor.

The country was under the French rule between 1893 and 1953 and you can see the French influence everywhere in the city. On the other hand, despite the heavy French or western influence, Vientiane is not like the other Asian cities where you would see skyscrapers everywhere. The tallest building is a 15 storey hotel!

HAD HER SHARE OF THE VIETNAM WAR Country’s history does not only carry traces of the French reign. After France lost its colonies in the Indochina, US government started taking measures to prevent communist rule from entering Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam. In fact it would sound quite naïve if we call it just ‘measures’ because what happened was a ‘secret war’. In 1961 Kennedy approved the government decision to set up an army of 11 thousand soldiers to defend the country against communist tendencies that started to flourish in the country at that time. Even though the Geneva Peace Treaty required that US to disband this secret army and withdraw its troops, US continued to provide support against communism via CIA. And of course the main source of funding for this army of 30 thousand

Bugün ülkede tahminen yarım milyon ton patlamamış bomba olduğu düşünülüyor. Ve bunlara dokunulduğunda patlama olasılığı yüksek. 1970’lerde yılda 600 kişi bu bombalar yüzünden hayatını kaybediyormuş, bugünlerde bu sayı yılda yüz kişiye düşmüş.

DÖRT BİR YANDA BUDA HEYKELLERİ Kuşkusuz burada sadece tankların, silahların dili konuşulmamış. Laos her ne kadar turistik bir ülke olarak anılmasa da, vahşi doğası ve kültürüyle de dikkate değer yerleri olan bir yer.

‘Laap’ adı verilen, nane yaprağı, küçük limon suyu, pirinç, acı biber ve dilediğiniz çeşit etle hazırlanan baharatlı salata Laos’un en meşhur yemeği. Buna ek olarak ‘tam maak hung’ adı verilen yeşil papaya salatasına da mönülerde sıkça rastlıyorsunuz.

Dictionary meaning of pastrami varies a lot. For

Örneğin bir tanımlamada pastırmanın, ‘çiğ etin çeşitli baharatlar ve tuzla kurutulmasıyla yapılan bir yiyecek’ olduğundan bahsedilirken diğer bir tanımlamada ‘tuz ve çemen katılıp bastırılarak kurutulmuş et’ olduğundan söz edilir. Türk Standartları Enstitüsü tarafından yayınlanmış olan TS 1071 Pastırma Standardı’nda ise, ‘mevzuatına uygun olan kombina ve mezbahalarda kesilen kasaplık sığır gövde eti, kasaplık dana gövde eti, kasaplık manda gövde etinin veteriner hekim kontrolünden geçmiş olan gövde etlerinin pastırma yapım kurallarına göre, pastırmalık olarak sökümünün yapılması ve gerekli teknolojik işlemlerden geçirilmesiyle elde edilen ve hayvan gövdesinde sökümünün yapıldığı bölgeye göre parça adı verilen ürün’ olarak tanımlanır.

Geleneksel et ürünlerimiz arasında birinci sırada yer alan pastırmanın tarihinin kesin olarak bilinmeyecek kadar eskiye dayanıyor. Ülkemizde sevilerek tüketilen ve besleyici değeri oldukça yüksek bir gıda maddesi olan pastırma, taze etten farklı olarak kurutma sırasında özellikle B ve C vitaminlerini kaybedebiliyor. Pastrami is ranked number one among our traditional meat based foods and its history dates back to very old times that the exact that is not known. It is among the most preferred food items in our country and has high nutritious value and unlike fresh meat, it loses especially vitamin B and vitamin C content during the drying process. However pastrami is no different than fresh meat in terms of protein and mineral content and because it is saturated meat, it is smoother and easier to digest than fresh meat.

FLAVOR INHERITED FROM THE HUNS Ancient people used to have simple techniques to preserve food. They used to dry meat under sunlight after salting it to prevent it from going bad.

Cans of dried meat filling the bags of the saddles of Hun cavaliers who immigrated from Central Asia to West and the fact that Turks prepare salted, dried and smoked meat in autumn for preparation for the winter prove that pastrami art originated from Central Asia. Because ancient Turks spent most of their lives fighting on horseback, they used to carry with them plenty of beef when they went to war. Pressed between the legs of the horse, this salted meat in a leather bag squeezed between the legs of the horse, would turn into pastrami after a time. On the other hand, the exact time when pastrami arrived in Anatolia is not known. However some researchers argue that it was brought to Anatolia by the Seljuks by the beginning of 12th century and that it passed over to Thrace spread over there after the conquest of İstanbul.

CAPITAL OF PASTRAMI: KAYSERİ Talking about Kayseri, first thing that one remembers would be pastrami...

Famous voyager Evliya Celebi who lived between 1611 and 1682 talks about Kayseri as follows in his famous ‘Seyahatname’: “Its unique white bread cooked in a smart way, Lavasa bread (made from thin dough), crisp flaky pastry (made of thin bread dough), buffalo pastrami with cumin that became famous with the famous meat of the region, and the beef sausage with great smell can be found no where else in the world.”. As one can tell from these statements, there was pastrami production in Kayseri for sure even during the 17th century. Pastrami production took place in uncontrolled environments at local workshops in towns and villages. However with the regulation brought into effect by Kayseri Municipality in 1945, all pastrami production facilities were moved to Karpuzatan Area. Some of the reasons for Kayseri being associated with pastrami are the climate, natural conditions and the continuation of master-apprenticeship tradition in pastrami production for centuries. PASTIRMA DENDİ Mİ KAYSERİ Kayseri denilince ilk akla gelen geleneksel ürünlerden biri de pastırma... 1611- 1682 yılları arasında yaşamış olan ünlü Seyyah Evliya Çelebi, ‘Seyahatname’sinde Kayseri’den şu şekilde bahseder: “Makulat ve imalatı has beyaz ekmeği (akıllı ve bilgili olarak imal edilen kendine mahsus beyaz ekmeği), Lavaşa yufkası (ince olarak yapılan ve yufka denilen ekmeği), katmerli böreği (ince ince açılmak suretiyle ekmek hamurundan yapılan böreği), lahm-ı kadit namı ile şöhret bulan kimyonlu sığır pastırması (ünü meşhur pastırma eti ile şöhret bulan kimyonlu sığır pastırması) ve miskli (güzel kokulu) et sucuğu bir tarafa yoktur.” Bu sözlerden anlaşıldığı üzere, Kayseri’de 17’nci yüzyılda dahi pastırma üretiminin olduğu aşikar. Çemenin, pastırmayı dış etkilere karşı özellikle kurtlanma ve mikrobiyal bozulmaya karşı koruyucu özelliği bulunur. ‘Çemenleme’ (covering with fenugreek) is done to give a unique flavor, color and look to the pastrami. FUN TO EAT BUT HARD TO MAKE With high nutritious value, pastrami is produced as a result of different processing phases. It requires special diligence to separate the animal parts to be used for pastrami production. Here, the goal is to classify meat according to their quality and to take out intact meat blocks. After taking out meat blocks in this way, the

YEMESİ ZİYAFET AMA ÜRETİMİ ZORLU İŞ Oldukça yüksek besleyici değere sahip olan pastırma farklı birçok aşamadan geçirilerek üretilir. Kesim sonrası pastırmalık etlerin sökümü ayrı bir özen gerektirir.

Burada amaç; etlerin kalitelerine göre sınıflandırılması ve blokların bir bütün halinde çıkarılmasıdır. Bu şekilde et parçaları alındıktan sonra ‘açım işlemi’ dediğimiz şekil verme işlemi gerçekleştirilir. Bu işlem; et bloklarının üzerindeki kas tabakası, tendo, ligament, lenf yumruları ve fazla yağlardan arındırılmasını kapsar. Pastırma şekli verilen etlerin ‘şak’ adı verilen bıçak darbeleriyle yüzeyi kesilerek tuzlama işlemi yapılır. Tuzlanan etler üst üste istiflenerek 24-36 saat bekletilir daha sonra döndürülerek 12-24 saat daha bekletilir ve ‘yıkama’ işlemine geçilir.

Yıkama işleminde pastırmalık etler sürekli su devirdaimi olan teknelerde iplerinden tutularak sağlı sollu yıkanır. Bu işlem iki kez tekrarlanarak etlerdeki fazla tuzlar giderilir.

Yıkamadan sonra pastırmalık etler birbirine değmeyecek şekilde askılara asılır ve normal hava şartlarında iki-üç, soğuk havalarda altı-yedi gün süreyle kurumaya bırakılır.

Kuruma süresi havanın sıcaklığı, rutubeti ve pastırmalık etlerin büyüklüğüne göre değişir.

MASAYA GELENE KADAR PEK ÇOK AŞAMADAN GEÇİYOR Yeterince kuruyan etler sabahın erken saatlerinde askılardan indirilerek ‘birinci denkleme’ye alınır. Burada

meat is given a certain shape. This process involves removal from the meat blocks, the muscle layer, tendons, ligamentum, nubs of glands and fat. After the meat is given pastrami shape in this way, the surface would be peeled off using a knife called ‘şak’ and salted. The salted meat blocks would be stacked and left to wait for 24 to 36 hours. After this period they would be turned and left to wait for 12-24 hours. After this waiting period meat is washed. During washing pastrami blocks are submerged into water tanks with circulated water.

This step is done two times to remove excess salt from the meat. After washing, pastrami blocks are hung in a way not to contact each other and left to dry for two to three days under normal weather conditions and six to seven days in cold weather. Drying time varies depending on the temperature, humidity and the size of the pastrami blocks.

PASSES THROUGH MANY STEPS BEFORE COMING TO THE DINNER TABLE After drying enough, meat is removed from the hangers early in the morning and placed into the process called ‘initial balancing’. During this phase, meat is left to wait for 10-12 hours in pressing equipment and loses some more of its water and becomes flatter and the knife scars on the meat disappear. This stage is called ‘cold balancing’. The next step is called ‘second balancing’ or ‘hot balancing’.

For this phase, pastrami blocks are hung in open air where there is no circulation and left to wait for around 1 to 3 days

Bu işlem ‘soğuk denkleme’ olarak adlandırılır. Bundan sonra ‘ikinci denkleme’ veya ‘sıcak denkleme’ adını verdiğimiz işlem gerçekleştirilmektedir. İkinci kurutma işlemi için açık havada güneş gören, hava akımı olmayan yerlerde asılarak bir-üç gün, kapalı havalarda beş-yedi gün bekletilir. Burada güneşin etkisiyle pastırma üzerindeki yağlar erir ve yağ damlacıkları belirir. Bu olaya ‘terli’ adı verilir. Terlemenin fazlaca olduğu parçalar tekrar denge alınır ki buna da ‘terli denkleme’ denir. Bu işlem serin havada gerçekleştirilmekte ve bu sırada etler bir miktar daha su kaybeder. Çıkarılan etler tekrar serin bir ortama alınarak hava cereyanının olmadığı bir yerde yavaş yavaş kurutulur. Burada şekillerinde hafif bir düzeltme yapılarak çemenleme işlemine hazır hale getirilir. in normal weather conditions and 5 to 7 days when the weather is cloudy. Pastrami blocks with to much sweating would be taken into another balancing phase which is called ‘sweat balancing’. This is done in cool weather and during this phase the meat loses some more water. Meat taken out of this phase would be placed again in a cool environment and left to wait in a setting with no air circulation. Here, slight adjustments are made to the shape and the pastrami blocks would be ready for applying fenugreek on them.

After packaging and labeling phases, pastrami is sent to warehouses for sale. ‘Kuşgömü’ and ‘sırt’ (made from the back meat) type pastramis are Class A pastramis while ‘bohça’, ‘kenar’, ‘şekerpare’, ‘but’ (made from buttocks), ‘mehle’, ‘omuz’ (made from shoulder) and ‘kürek’ (made from scapula section) pastrami are Class B pastrami.

Bu sayede Volga’dan Don Nehri’ne, Hazar’dan Baltık Denizi’ne, Karadeniz’den Beyaz Deniz’e gemilerle gitmek mümkün.

STALİN’İN AÇTIRDIĞI KANALLARI SAYESİNDE Moskova’dan St. Petersburg’a su yolu açmak I. Petro’nun (Deli Petro) büyük hayallerinden biriydi. Ancak Rusya’da birçok yeniliğe imza atan I. Petro’nun bu hayali gerçekleşemedi. 1825 yılında Moskova Nehri’ni Volga’ya bağlayan bir kanal yapılmış, ancak bu kanal uzun ömürlü olmamıştı. Nihayet Stalin döneminde dört yıl sekiz ay gibi rekor bir sürede 128 kilomerelik Moskova Kanalı yapıldı. 1937 yılında bitirilen kanal inşaatının boyutlarını 78

New waterways were created by connecting major lakes and rivers of Russia. This way it became possible to travel from Volga to Don, from Caspian Sea to Baltic Sea and from the Black Sea to the White Sea. THANKS TO THE WATER CHANNELS OPENED AFTER THE ORDER OF STALİN It was one of Petro I’s (Petro the Lunatic) greatest dreams to open waterways from Moscow to St. Petersburg. However this dream of Petro who had undersigned many novelties in Russia couldn’t come

DEVASA GÖLLER DİYARI Moskova’dan yola çıkan gemi Moskova Kanalı’ndan Volga’ya geçiyor. Ertesi gün Volga üzerinde bulunan küçük ve sevimli bir şehir olan Ugliç’te duruyor. Sonraki gün Yaroslavl’a varan gemi buradaki turlardan sonra geriye dönerek 4.500 kilometrekarelik Ribinsk Barajı’na giriyor. Baraj, büyüklüğü nedeniyle Ribinsk Denizi olarak da adlandırılıyor. Güneyden kuzeye kat edilen barajdan sonra sırasıyla geçilen su yolları: Şeksna Nehri, Beyaz Göl, Kovja Nehri, Volga-Baltık Kanalı, Vitegra Nehri, Onega Gölü, Svir Nehri, Ladoga Gölü ve Neva Nehri. Ladoga ve Onega Avrupa’nın en büyük birinci ve ikinci gölleri.

Yüzölçümleri, sırasıyla 18.000 ve 10.000 kilometrekare civarında. Marmara Denizi’nin yüzölçümünün 11.350 kilometrekare olduğunu hatırlatalım. Ugliç ve Yaroslavl’dan sonra sırasıyla durulan limanlar: Goritsi Köyü, Onega Gölü’nün kuzeyinde bulunan Kiji Adası, Svir Nehri kıyısında Mandrogi ve nihayet yolculuğun son durağı St. Petersburg. And finally during Stalin’s reign, the 128 km long Moscow Channel was constructed within only four years and eight months which was a record at that time. Let’s give you some figures so that you can better grasp the dimensions of this huge channel that was completed in 1937. Suez Canal was completed in 10 years with 2.5 million workers.

More than 200 million cubic meters of soil was relocated during the construction of Moscow Channel. A train with wagons filled with 200 million cubic meters of soil would be five times longer than equator. Slaves were used in the construction of the canal and they all worked in very difficult conditions. Similar projects initiated by Stalin continued in the following periods as well and the wonderful waterway system we know now was created.

LAND OF VAST LAKES The boat that starts its tour from Moscow enters Volga through Moscow Channel. The next day, it stops by Ugalic, a tiny and cozy small city on River Volga. The other day, the boat reaches Yaroslavl and after touring here, goes back and enters the 4.500 km ling Ribinsk Dam (The lake of the dam is also called the Ribinsk Sea due to its size).

After traveling the whole Dam from north to south, the boat passes through the following water ways in the give order: River Şeksna, White Lake, River Kovja, Volga-Baltık Canal, River Vitegra, Lake Onega, River Svir, Lake Ladoga and River Neva. Ladoga and Onega are Europe’s largest and second largest lakes respectively. Their total area is around 18.000 and 10.000 kilometer squares respectively.

Let’s remind you that total area of Marmara Sea is 11.350 kilometer squares. The next stops after Ugliç and Yaroslavl are Goritsi Village, Kiji Island located to the north of Lake Onega, Mandrogi which is located on River Svir and finally St. Petersburg. Guests can take buses at each of these

MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A CAMERA WITH YOU At the start of the boat tour an introductory meeting is organized with the captain and the crew and at the end of the tour, there is a farewell party. Also we advise you to take some fancy clothes with you for these events. The small towels in the cabins are replaced everyday while the big towels and the bed sheets are replaced every three days. Only soap is provided in shower cabins. No shampoo, hairdryer, toothpaste or toothbrush is provided.

In some areas, especially on Kiji Island you can have a lot of mosquitos in summer. So it is recommended that you take with you some sort of mosquito repellent. With all the scenery you see when traveling through all those small villages and towns other than the two major cities and the waterways, with beautiful sunset and sunrise scenes and activities on the boat, you will be using your camera and camcorder more often than you’d think.

Thus we advise you take with you sufficient amount of films or cassettes, spare batteries, spare memory cards etc.

DIGITAL ERA IN THE CLASSROOM Doğa Koleji also has the hotcase studios where instructors give lessons and video recordings are made and prepare these videos to be aired on iTunes.

Currently there are over 2 thousand recordings and around 60 thousand digital materials. All of these materials are materials that were prepared by Doga Koleji educators and belong to Doğa Koleji. Apart from these materials, there are also test books and videos providing answers to test questions are available on internet. The instructor explains the questions and solves the problems one by one and there are around 40 thousand questions. This is not a one-time process and the questions are improved regularly and the subjects are being changed constantly. And with the special software developed for the smart blackboards new materials can be transferred to the whole system immediately which makes things very easy for all educators.

FOUR MAIN NUTRITIONAL GROUPS In order to understand what healthy and balanced diet means, we first need to learn about the basic nutritional elements. There are four main nutritional groups. These are milk and dairy products, meat and meat products, vegetables and fruit, bread and grains.

Çünkü insanların kalıtımsal nedenlerden dolayı gereksinimleri farklıdır. Örneğin, süt kabul etmeyen bünyeler vardır. Bunlar kalsiyum gereksinimlerini sütten değil başka kaynaklardan sağlamalıdırlar. Sağlıklı ve dengeli beslenmenin diğer önemli bir ayağı ise sudur. Su vücutta en bol miktarda bulunan öğedir. Özellikle sıcaklık ve rutubetin yoğun olduğu yaz aylarında su alımına çok dikkat etmek gerekir. Kilo başına yaklaşım 40 mililitre su içmemiz lazımdır. Ancak yaz aylarında ter ve buharlaşmayla kayıp ettiğimiz su artıkça su tüketimini de artırmak gerekir. Suyun ana görevleri arasında; besinlerin sindirimini kolaylaştırması ve hücrelere taşınmasıyla metabolizma sonucu meydana gelen zararlı maddeleri dışarı atması vardır.

KALORİ GEREKSİNİMİ KİŞİDEN KİŞİYE DEĞİŞİR Bir besinin içerdiği enerji miktarı kaloriyle ölçülür. Kişilerin günlük kalori gereksinimleri çok farklıdır. Yaşa, cinse, mesleğe ve iriliğe göre değişir. Ortalama orta yaşlı bir kadının günlük kalori gereksinimi 1.500-2.000 kalori civarındadır.

Eğer bu gereksiniminizden daha fazla kalori alırsanız, fazla kalori vücudunuzda yağ olarak birikir. Aksine günlük aktivitenizi karşılayacak kadar kalori alamazsanız bu sefer vücut kendi dokularını kaloriye çevirmeye başlar.

HANGİ YİYECEKLERDEN UZAK DURMALI? Bazı yiyeceklerin besin değerleri o kadar düşüktür ki içerdikleri maddeler hastalıklara neden olabilir. EVERYONE HAS DIFFERENT NUTRITIONAL NEEDS Each of us needs different amounts of different nutrients. So one should avoid general recipes of healthy diet. Because humans have varying nutritional needs depending on their genetic properties. For examples some structures cannot tolerate milk or dairy products. And people with such structures need to obtain their calcium from nutritional sources other than milk.

Another important aspect of a healthy and balanced diet is water consumption. Water is the nutritional element with the highest amount in the body. You should make sure you consume enough water especially in summer months when temperature and humidity levels are extreme. On average you need to be consuming around 40 milliliters of water per kilogram of your body weight. However you need more than that in summer as your body loses more water due to perspiration and vaporization.

Main function of water is to facilitate digestion and help discharge of toxic materials resulting from the metabolism by entering the cells.

CALORIE REUQIREMENTS VARY FROM PERSON TO PERSON Amount of energy that a food contains is measured in calories.

Daily calorie requirement of every individual would be different.

And it varies depending on age, gender, occupation and body mass. Average calorie requirement for an average middle aged woman is around 1.500 to 2.000 calories. If she gets calories more than this, she would start putting on weight as excess calories would be converted into fat and stored by your body. On the contrary, if you don’t get enough calories to meet your daily calorie need, your body would start to convert its own tissues into calories.

WHICH FOODS TO AVOID? Nutritional values of some foods would be so low that their content may cause some health conditions. The most well-known of such nutritional elements are sodium, fat, cholesterol, alcohol and TEMMUZ - JULY 2013

sugar. Healthy diet does not necessarily mean avoiding all of these nutritional elements but consuming them only in less amounts. Among the fat types, saturated fat (like butter which is in solid state in room temperature, chicken skin, coconut etc.), are the most dangerous for health as they would raise your cholesterol levels. You can avoid saturated fat by using sunflower oil or other types of vegetable oil for frying food. When consumed in high amounts, sodium, which is contained in table salt, can cause high blood pressure when consumed in high amounts. Although it gives lots of calories sugar has low nutritional value and we shouldn’t also forget that it damages your teeth.

ARE WE EATING HEALTHY? The truth is that 20th century has changed the eating habits of people in a very bad way and it continues to do so. The number of those people who count calories to loose weight fast, who eat 10 meals a day following others recommendation about ‘eating more frequently but in smaller amounts’, who change their diets four times a month based on what they read in newspapers or those who enjoy eating very harmful foods just because they taste good, is increasing everyday. Your body is made up of what you eat. Just like the way the construction materials like sand, cement and iron determines the robustness of a building, the food we eat which makes up our body determines our health, our mood and cognitive processes.

For example meat is very harmful for human body. Meat disrupts the delicate balance of secretory glands, and results in medical problems sooner or later. It is well known that those who eat red meat would get heart and vein diseases or cancer very easily. What is unknown is the negative effect of meat on mood.

EXCESSIVE MAT CONSUMPTION DISRUPTS YOUR BALANCE People eating too much meat tend to be more aggressive.

They would be insensitive and rude. They are far form being considerate and thoughtful. They would be materialistic and keen on sex. They would be restless and because they get bored easily, they try to find different things to entertain themselves and become addicted to cigarettes, alcohol or drugs in order to get rid off their unnecessary boredom.

Those who eat too much meat damage their physical, emotional and cognitive potential. For those who say “I eat meat and I don’t have any problems”, it is would be sufficient try a diet without meat and be persuaded after seeing the difference. There are serious mistakes being made in the ‘amount’ dimension of our dining culture as well.

For example one healthy diet that would provide you with both physical and spiritual relief would be to eat only “once a day” and to fast once a week. And if such a diet contains grainy foods (high in nutrition value) along with vegetables and fruits depending on the season, and if the person avoids margarine and uses vegetables oil and especially olive oil for cooking, healthy living is inevitable.
