La experiencia que acumulamos tras 45 años dedicándonos al mundo de la alta relojería y joyería nos ayuda a crear una revista cada vez mejor. Les presentamos la tercera edición de Gomez y Molina: más reposada, profunda y completa que las anteriores.
Confíen en nosotros, y si no, al menos escuchen la recomendación de los más sabios: “Vieja madera para arder, viejo vino para beber, viejos amigos en quien confiar, y viejos autores para leer” (Sir. Francis Bacon, filósofo y estadista británico). A los más expertos, aunque utilizando un lenguaje lo suficientemente sencillo como para enamorar también a los neófitos, les dedicamos una selección de relojes y joyas pertenecientes a las firmas de más prestigio internacional. También forman parte del contenido técnico de la revista los reportajes sobre la capacidad creativa de Patek Philippe o Romain Jerome, así como también la entrevista a Antonio Seward, General Manager de Audemars Piguet para Francia y la Península Ibérica.
Evidentemente, también tienen un peso importante los artículos de estilo de vida. En esta ocasión, contamos con dos invitados de lujo: por un lado, Garret McNamara, que nos ha concedido una entrevista en exclusiva tras surfear la ola más grande del mundo; y por otro, la escritora Ángela Becerra, que nos habla de su obra ‘Memorias de un sinvergüenza de siete suelas’. También disfrutarán los amantes de la náutica, que descubrirán las bondades de la última creación de Riva; o los entusiastas del cine, que harán lo propio con un reportaje sobre el resurgimiento de la industria francesa. Y para los que tienen alma de viajero, una escapada obligatoria al corazón de Europa: Berlín.

The experience we have accumulated after 45 years of dedication to the world of high class watchmaking and jewellery has helpd us to create an ever improving magazine. We now present the third edition of Gomez & Molina: more reposed, indepth and complete than the previous ones.
Trust in us, or at least listen to the recommendations of the wiser ones: “Old wood to burn, old wine to drink, old friends in whom to trust, and old authors to read” (Sir Francis Bacon, philosopher and British statesman). To the most expert of you, although using sufficiently simple language to also seduce newcomers, we offer a selection of watches and jewellery belonging to the most prestigious international firms. In addition, in the technical content of the magazine there are articles about the creative skills of Patek Philippe and Romain Jerome, in addition to an interview with Antonio Seward, General Manager of Audemars Piguet for France and the Iberian Peninsula. Obviously there are also significant articles about life styles.
On this occasion we are pleased to count on two luxury guests: one the one hand Garret McNamara who granted us an exclusive interview after surfing the largest wave in the world; and on the other, Angela Becerra who talks about her work “Memories of a scoundrel with seven soles”. Watersport lovers will also enjoy as they discover the benefits of the latest creation by Rive; and cinema lovers who will do likewise with the article on the revival of the French industry. We also offer an escape into the heart of Europa: Berlin – which is a must for anyone with a traveller’s soul.

Eleven Hasta hace poco, Eleven era el único restaurante de Lisboa que contaba con una estrella Michelin. Marina Gómez Molina
Marina Gómez lleva toda una vida ligada al mundo de la joyería, al cual se aficionó gracias a la pasión que le inculcaron sus padres. Junto a sus hermanos, ha trabajado duramente para convertir el negocio familiar en una de las relojerías-joyerías de referencia de nuestro país. Ahora, a la constelación de marcas que embellecen sus escaparates, hay que añadir Marina G, su propia línea de joyería. Marina Gómez’s life has always been linked to the world of jewellery, which she bécame fond of thanks to the passion instilled by her parents. Together with her brother and sister she has worked hard to convert the family business into one of the most important watchmakers-jewellers of the Country. Now, Marina G must be added to the constellation of brands that beautify showcases, with her own line of jewellery.

Después de muchos años diseñando para clientes, adaptando las creaciones a sus gustos, es la primera vez que diseño y creo las joyas que me gustaría llevar a mi. Intuyo que se lo ha pasado bien. Sí, he disfrutado mucho en todos y cada uno de los procesos, desde la elección de los materiales, el estudio técnico de los diseños, los acabados y engastados; y finalmente con la alegría de ver reflejadas tus ideas en un producto final. En general, ¿cómo definiría sus piezas? Son creaciones muy personales, que aúnan el diseño de joyería con la moda. Se trata de una colección de cuellos realizados en distintos materiales: piel, seda y encaje con colgantes intercambiables. Ideales para… Una mujer independiente y trabajadora que busca versatilidad y originalidad con unos diseños adaptables para todo tipo de ocasión. ¿Qué materiales y piedras preciosas le gustan más? Los diamantes y el oro blanco es lo que más llevo habitualmente, aunque siempre trato de investigar y trabajar con nuevos materiales: la madera, el titanio y algunas piedras que no son tan comunes, como por ejemplo las alejandritas, los jades blancos o el ópalo. ¿Se trabaja aún hoy en día con las herramientas y las técnicas tradicionales? En nuestros talleres contamos con las técnicas más modernas de fabricación, aunque seguimos acabando las piezas manualmente, apoyándonos en la tradición y el savoir faire. ¿Qué es más importante: tener una pieza de alta gama y muy vistosa o saber llevar cualquier tipo de pieza independientemente de su valor? En mi opinión, al igual que en la moda, hay diseños para cada ocasión y hay que saber llevarlos independientemente de su valor, aunque sin renunciar a la calidad y el diseño. ¿Dónde podremos comprar sus joyas? De momento, solo se pueden comprar en nuestros establecimientos. Estamos desarrollando la idea de la venta on-line para un futuro.
After many years of designing for customers, adapting the creations to their taste, this is the first time that I am designing and creating jewellery that I like to wear. I imagine you have enjoyed it. Yes, I have enjoyed all and each of the processes very much, from choosing the materials, the technical study of the designs, the finishes and settings; and finally the joy of seeing the reflection of your ideas in a final product. How would you define your pieces in general? They are very personal creations that blend jewellery design with fashion. This is a collection of neckwear elaborated in different materials: leather, silk that interchangeable pendants fit into. Ideal for… An independant working woman who is looking for versatility and originality with designs that adapt to all occasions. What materials and precious stones do you like most? I usually wear diamonds and white gold, although I always try and investigate and work with new materials: wood, titanium and some less common gems such as alexandrite, white jade and opal. Nowadays do you work with traditional tools and techniques? In our studios we have the most modern production techniques available even though we still finish the pieces manually, relying on tradition and savoir faire. What is more important: to possess a high-end, showy piece or to know how to wear any piece, irrespective of its value? I believe that, as with fashion, there are designs for every occasion and you must know how to wear them irrespective of their value but without relinquishing quality and design. Where can we buy your jewellery? For the time being it’s only available at our stores. We are currently developing a online sales option for the future.

En 1996, la firma iba a imaginar un reloj similar al Calendario perpetuo, pero más accesible, práctico y fácil de manejar: el Calendario Anual (Ref. 5035) El Calendario Anual se convertiría en el gran reclamo para los amantes de la relojería, que hasta el día de hoy han visto como dicho reloj presentaba nuevas versiones y distintas mejoras. En 1998, el mecanismo de base se vería enriquecido con nuevas funciones (indicador de reserva de marcha y fases de la luna). Posteriormente, en el año 2006, se presentaban dos exitosas referencias: el 5146, un nuevo Calendario Anual para hombre; y el 4936, un modelo exclusivamente femenino.

Las esferas (carátulas) son de nácar genuino: nácar blanco para la versión en oro amarillo, nácar negro de Tahití -un ornamento raro y prestigioso- para la versión en oro blanco. La trilogía Pulsomax En el año 2005, Patek Philippe lanzó el Calendario Anual Ref. 5250, dotado de la rueda de escape Silinvar, un material que se obtiene a partir del silicio. Posteriormente, la manufactura presentaba el Calendario Anual 5350, dotado de un segundo componente en Silinvar, la espiral Spiromax (ambos en ediciones limitadas). Esteta y apasionado de los relojes, Antoine Norbert de Patek funda la manufactura en 1839. Cinco años después, conoce a JeanAdien Philipee, uno de los más grandes relojeros del siglo XIX, quien acababa de presentar un sistema revolucionario para dar cuerda y poner en hora el mecanismo y ajustar las agujas por medio de la corona, suprimiendo así el uso de la llave. El encuentro no pudo ser más fructífero. Ambos se propusieron crear los mejores guarda tiempos del mundo; no solo los más bellos, sino los más innovadores técnicamente hablando. Su idea era colocarse a la cabeza del sector, creando relojes de bolsillo y de pulsera con soluciones que antes nadie había imaginado. Lo consiguieron paso a paso, gracias a la exhaustiva labor de ingenieros, artesanos y relojeros, cuyas cabezas han fabulado en primer lugar lo que después fabricaron sus manos. Con el paso del tiempo, Patek Philippe acabaría imponiéndose como la gran maestra de las complicaciones, algo con lo que habían soñado sus fundadores. Gustave Flaubert ya nos lo advirtió en su momento: “Los sueños son la sirena de las almas. Ella canta. Nos llama. La seguimos y jamás retornamos”. El Calendario Anual En 1996, la firma iba a imaginar un reloj de características similares a las del calendario perpetuo (creado en 1985), pero más accesible, práctico y fácil de manejar. El escape ordinario de áncora suizo, utilizado en la mayoría de relojes fabricados durante los últimos 100 años, está compuesto principalmente de acero. Al girar, la rueda de escape transmite la energía del muelle real al áncora; ésta deja escapar periódicamente una parte de energía, cierto número de veces por segundo, para mantener las oscilaciones del órgano regulador. Los dos brazos del áncora están equipados con paletas de rubí, destinadas a reducir la fricción con la rueda de escape. Justamente, es esta combinación de materiales la que dejó atrás el Pulsomax. Es un escape más macizo, pero también tres veces más ligero. Debido a su liviandad, los componentes del escape Pulsomax son capaces de reaccionar con mayor rapidez que sus equivalentes de acero, mejorando considerablemente la transmisión de energía en el escape y el volante. Step by step they achieved it thanks to the exhausting tasks of engineers, craftsmen, and watchmakers whose heads had created what their hands later manufactured. As time went by Patek Philippe would be recognized as the master of complications, something their founders had dreamt of. Gustave Flaubert warned us in his time: “The dreams are the mermaids of the souls. She sings. She calls us. We follow her and never return”. Yearly Calendar In 1996 the company would imagine a watch with similar features as the perpetual calendar (created in 1985) although more accessible, practical and easier to manage. We are talking about the Yearly Calendar (Ref. 5035) an exclusive Patek Philippe patent which, for the first time, automatically indicated the month, day and the exact date of the months of 30 and 31 days, needing only one correction a year, at the end of February. The Yearly calendar was to become in great demand by watch lovers who until the present time have seen how the same watch has been presented in new versions and with different improvements. In 1998 the basic mechanism would become enriched by new functions (indicating the power reserve and phases of the moon). Later, in 2006, two of the most successful models were presented: 5146, a new Yearly Calendar for men and 4936 a model exclusively for women. Yearly Calendar Ref. 5146: a new dimension in elegance. The Yearly Calendar ref. 5146 showed a clear evolution to the previous model, with a slightly larger box. Thanks to its frivolous concept, the components of the Pulsomax escape can react with greater speed than its steel equivalents, considerably improving the transmission of energy in the escape and wheel. Yearly Calendar 5146: a true work of art Men are attracted by technical watches but they also know how to appreciate elegance in design, beauty of the materials, the luxury of detail. The house picked up the gauntlet and gave the Yearly Calendar an even more refined style. Ref. 5146 was elaborated in two different 18 carat golds: yellow and white, and with two different dial faces, meaning that four versions were created altogether. The cream colour lacquered dial face enamoured by its warm tone and generous texture; while the slated coloured dial with “soleil” engraved on it illuminates with subtle reflections. Tu adolescencia, hace 25 años Muchos de nosotros, familia, amigos y clientes, vivimos nuestra adolescencia durante aquella intensa década de los 80, en la que tuvieron lugar algunos acontecimientos de gran relevancia. En Gomez & Molina, de forma casi consecutiva, inauguramos las tiendas de la calle Ramón y Cajal y de Puerto Banús, en 1984 y 1986 respectivamente. Sin embargo, nadie puede escapar de su contexto: dos años más tarde, en 1988, pasaron un buen número de cosas sobre las que ahora vale la pena detenerse. Por eso nos preguntamos: ¿cómo éramos hace 25 años?
El 3 de julio de 1988, durante la guerra entre Irak e Irán el Golfo Pérsico, un crucero lanzamisiles de la armada estadounidense que tenía la misión de defender los complejos petroleros kuwaitíes, derribaba un avión de pasajeros iraní. Los responsables de aquella operación pensaban que el piloto de la aeronave pretendía estrellarse contra ellos y asesinaron a los 290 pasajeros que iban a bordo. En esos momentos, el avión ganaba altura y estaba dentro de los límites del pasillo aéreo que se utilizaba habitualmente. Tras la correspondiente investigación, EE.UU reconocería su error; aunque tuvieron que pasar 10 años para que se produjera un gesto de acercamiento hacia Irán. Finalmente, el gobierno norteamericano decidió abonar una indemnización de 100 millones de dólares.
Many of us; family, friends and customers, enjoyed our adolescence during the intense decade of the 80s, during which some of the greatest events took place. At Gomez & Molina, we opened the shops in Calle Ramón y Cajal and Puerto Banus almost consecutively in 1984 and 1986, respectively. Nobody can ignore the fact that two years later, in 1988, a great number of things happened which are worthy to reflect upon. For this reason we are asking: what were we like 25 years ago?
También en el ámbito de las finanzas fue un año importante. En junio se reunieron los miembros del Consejo Europeo y crearon el ‘Comité para el estudio de la unión económica y monetaria’, presidido por Jacques Delors (Presidente de la Comisión), y en el que estuvieron presentes todos los gobernadores de los bancos centrales de los Estados Miembros. Del informe que se elaboró a posteriori se extrae una conclusión definitiva: la unión monetaria implicaba “la liberación total de los movimientos de capitales, la plena integración de los mercados financieros y la convertibilidad irreversible de las monedas”. Sin duda, el euro empezaba a gestarse.
La ciencia y la tecnología también celebraron su particular efeméride aquel año. El 29 de septiembre, dos años y medio después de la explosión del transbordador Challenger, los EEUU regresaban al espacio con el lanzamiento del Discovery. Medio millón de personas se concentraron alrededor del Centro Espacial Kennedy para presenciar en directo el despegue de la nave, que se retrasó 90 minutos. A pesar de las primeras dificultades, los tripulantes del Discovery pudieron completar su misión: lanzar un satélite de comunicaciones y sustituir el que se perdió durante el desastre del Challenger. La moneda única: el euro
No debió estar muy atenta a este encuentro la entonces primera ministra británica Margaret Tatcher. En otoño de aquel mismo año la representante de los ‘torie’ pronunciaba su conocido ‘Discurso de Brujas’, en el
que defendía su postura acusadamente euroescéptica. Europa, Inglaterra…no han cambiado demasiado las cosas.

En el mundo del deporte, el 17 de septiembre de 1988 pasaría a la historia como el día en que Corea del Sur se abría al mundo, organizando la XXIV edición de los Juegos Olímpicos. Participaron casi 8.500 atletas procedentes de más de 150 países, pero Seúl se convirtió en el centro de todas las miradas por dos cuestiones: en primer lugar, por acoger las últimas olimpiadas disputadas bajo el marco de la Guerra Fría; y en segundo lugar, por el duelo entre Ben Johnson y Carl Lewis en la final de los 100m lisos. Johnson ganó, pero fue descalificado y desposeído tras conocerse que se había dopado. En aquel momento, la noticia se convirtió en fue un escándalo mayúsculo y tuvo una gran repercusión mediática. También en este ámbito merece especial atención la figura de Marco Van Basten y aquella irrepetible ‘naranja mecánica’. La selección holandesa ganó la final de la Eurocopa de 1988 contra el combinado de la URSS, disputada el 25 de junio. A pesar de perder el primer partido, los ‘orange’ lograron enderezar el rumbo gracias a la aportación de jugadores como Ruud Gullit, Frank Rijkaard, Koeman y el propio Van Basten. El delantero sentenció el último partido del campeonato con una imparable bolea, seguramente, uno de los goles más recordados de toda la historia del fútbol.

El lanzamiento del Discovery, la gestación del Euro, la implacable voz de la ‘Dama de Hierro’, Ben Johnson, Naguib Mahfuz y la película Rainman, protagonistas de los 80.
On 3rd July 1988, during the war between Irak and Iran in the Persian Gulf, a US armada missile launcher, with the mission of defending the Kuwait petrol installations, shot down a plane carrying Iranian passengers. Those responsible for the operation believed that the pilot tried to crash into the plane and killed the 290 passengers on board. At the time the plane had gained height and was within the usual air limit passage. After investigation the US recognized its error: even if it took them 10 years to make a gesture of rapprochement to Iran. Finally the American Government decided to award 100 million dollars in compensation. Science and technology also celebrated its own ephemerid that year. On 29th September, two and a half years after the explosion of the Challenger space shuttle the US returned to space with the launch of the Discovery. Half a million people were gathered around Kennedy Space Center to witness the spacecraft take off although it was delayed by 90 minutes. In spite of the initial difficulties, the Discovery crew was able to complete its mission: launch a communications satellite and replace the one that was lost during the Challenger disaster. It was also an important year in the area of finances. In June the members of the European Council gathered to create the “Committee” to study the Economy and Monetary union, presided by Jacques Delors (President of the Commission) with the presence of the Governors of the State member central banks. The definite conclusion drawn from the subsequent report was: the monetary union would imply “the
total release of capital movement, full integration in the financial markets and the irreversible conversion of the currencies”. Thus began the start of the euro. The British Prime Minister at the time, Margaret Thatcher, didn’t seem to be very attentive to this meeting. In the autumn of the same year, the Tory representative pronounced her famous “Bruges Speech” in which she defended her clearly eurosceptic position. Europe, England… things haven’t changed much. In the world of sport 17th September 1988 made history as the day that South Korea opened up to the world by celebrating the XXIV Olympic Games event. Almost 8,500 athletes from more than 150 countries participated. However, Seoul was the center of attention for two main reasons: first, by hosting the last Olympics within the Cold War; and second, for the race between Ben Johnson and Carl Lewis in the finals of the 100 metres heat. Johnson won but was disqualified
and stripped of his title after it was discovered he was guilty of doping. At the time the news became a huge scandal and had a great impact in the media. Never before had a sportsman’s cheating been cause for such rejection, although 25 years later history has been repeated by Lance Armstrong. Also within this scope, special attention should be given to the figure of Marco Van Basten and the unrepeatable “Clockwork Orange”. Another great feat was when the Dutch football team won the Euro Cup in 1988 against the combined USSR team. In spite of losing the first match the “orange” team managed to strengthen their course thanks to the contribution of players such as Ruud Gullit, Frank Rijkaard, Koeman and Van Basten himself. The forward player proclaimed the last match of the championship with an unstoppable shot, probably one of the most memorable goals in the history of football. In the world of literature something exceptional occurred. Naguib Mahfuz, the author of the wellknown, The Cairo Trilogy, became the first Egyptian writer to win the Nobel Prize. Few texts have helped us to understand the richness and depth of the Arab world beyond any tourist guide. His work is a passionate journey though the turbulent streets of Cairo, where tradition and the modern age seek how to walk hand in hand. Again, in the world of culture, we can highlight the overwhelming reception of the film Rain Man, starring Tom Cruise and Dustin Hoffman. The 1988 Oscars’ event highly honoured the Director of the film, Barry Levinson, and Hoffman who won the prize of best actor for his role of the autistic character, Raymond Babbit.

“El Royal Oak fue una auténtica revolución para la relojería clásica” Antonio Seward empezó a trabajar en Audemars Piguet en el año 1999, cubriendo desde Barbados todo el mercado latinoamericano y del Caribe.
Antonio Seward, general Manager de Audemars Piguet para Francia y la Península Ibérica, nos explica con total franqueza los secretos de una de las firmas de relojería tradicional con más carisma de la actualidad. Lo que realmente nos diferencia es nuestro espíritu familiar y espontáneo. Desde sus inicios en 1875, la empresa siempre ha estado ubicada en Le Brassus, en el valle de Joux. Somos la última gran Manufactura de alta relojería en manos de las familias fundadoras y eso se traduce en un ambiente muy amable y cercano. ¿Ha estado bien recibida la marca en nuestro mercado? Los códigos estéticos y de diseño de AP corresponden al gusto latino y por tanto tenemos mucha presencia en América Latina, Italia y evidentemente, España. ¿Qué parte del mundo les queda por conquistar? En estos momentos tenemos 20 boutiques en todo el mundo, pero aún debemos establecernos en sitios ciudades como Londres, Moscú, Méjico DF, Sao Paulo o Mumbai. Teniendo en cuenta el contexto de crisis que vivimos, ¿cómo es posible que el lujo haya crecido más de un 20%? No nos engañemos, si el lujo ha crecido en la Península Ibérica en estos dos últimos años ha sido gracias al turismo. Aún así, es verdad
que el consumidor español tiende a apostar por marcas con mayor legitimidad histórica. En este sentido, el 40º aniversario del Royal Oak fue todo un acontecimiento. Sí, el Royal Oak fue una auténtica revolución. En 1972, las grandes maisons suizas seguían proponiendo modelos muy clásicos, con cajas redondas y solo realizadas en metales nobles. De la mano del gran diseñador Gerald Genta, la marca trascendía aquellos mitos presentando un reloj deportivo hecho en acero pero a precio de oro.

tiene un diseño contemporáneo pero está manufacturado según los códigos más tradicionales de la alta relojería. ¿Ha cambiado el papel de la mujer en el mundo de la alta relojería? ¡Absolutamente! La mujer es mucho más protagonista de lo que era hace 10 años. El incremento de nuestras ventas en productos femeninos lo demuestra. ¿Cómo valora la irrupción de Internet como canal de información y promoción? Es una gran herramienta. El cliente está mucho más informado y preparado y las marcas se pueden comunicar de una manera mucho más directa y frecuente. La próxima etapa será analizar de qué manera la red se puede transformar en un canal de venta legítima tanta para unos como para otros. ¿Cómo surgió el proyecto de de construir la manufactura de ‘Les Forges’ siguiendo los criterios de la MINERGIE-ECO? Tenemos una fundación que apoya proyectos ecológicos realizados en diferentes países. Siempre hemos tenido una filosofía de desarrollo sostenible y de uso responsable de los recursos naturales y era lógico establecer las características de funcionamiento de la MINERGIE-ECO. Antonio Seward, General Manager of Audemars Piguet for France and the Iberian Peninsula, reveals the secrets of one of the most charismatic traditional watch brands today with utter honesty. What really distinguishes us is our familyoriented spirit and spontaneity. Ever since it was founded in 1875, the company has been located in Le Brassus in the Joux Valley. We are the last great fine watch manufacture in the hands of the founding family, and this translates into a very friendly, accessible atmosphere. Has the brand been well-received in our market? The AP aesthetic and design codes reflect a Latin taste, and that’s why we have a very strong presence in Latin America, Italy and obviously Spain. What part of the world does Audemars Piguet still have to conquer? Today we have 20 shops all over the world, but we would still like to open new ones in places like London, Moscow, Mexico, Sao Paulo and Mumbai. Bearing in mind today’s economic situation, how is it possible that the market for luxury goods has risen 25%? We should not fool ourselves: if the market for luxury goods has grown on the Iberian Peninsula these past two years it is thanks to the impact of tourism. Still, it is true that today Spanish and Andorran consumers tend
to choose brands with greater historical legitimacy. So in this sense, the 40th anniversary of the Royal Oak is a huge event. Yes, it’s true that the Royal Oak was a veritable revolution. In 1972, the major Swiss houses were still proposing very classic models, with round cases and only made of fine metals. Thanks to the handiwork of designer Gerald Genta, the brand transcended those myths by presenting a sports model made of steel, but priced like gold.

But Audemars Piguet also has a healthy respect for the classics. Our challenge is to have sufficient visibility in both the sports and classic watch segments. Has the role of women in the world of fine watches changed? Absolutely! Women are playing a much more prominent role than even ten years ago. The rise in sales of our women’s pro-ducts proves this. How would you assess the onset of the Internet as a channel of both information and promotion? It is a great media channel. Clients are much better informed and prepared, and the companies can communicate much more frequently and directly. The next stage would obviously be to analyse how the Web can be transformed into a legitimate sales channel for both sides. How did the project to construct the Les Forges manufacture under the MINERGIEECO criteria emerge? We have a foundation which provides support to ecological projects conducted in diverse countries. We have always upheld a philosophy of sustainable development and a responsible use of natural resources, and it was logical to implement the MINERGIE-ECO characteristics. Confess, what’s your favorite watch? Along with the one I’m wearing, the 42-mm Royal Oak Equation of Time in steel, an ultrathin complication with a sporty aesthetic: a true wonder!

Angela Becerra (Cali, Colombia 1957) left a successful advertising career to dedicate herself to her great passion: literature. She took a risk but the wager turned out well. Her first novel, called Denied of Love (2003) she won the Latin Literary Award, granted during the prestigious Chicago Book Fair. Now she presents us with Memories of a scoundrel with seven soles, a work that was begun in 1998, after she attended a party at the Venice Carnaval. I sat next to a gentleman, along with another 10 people who were eating at the table. He was alluring, fantastic and I thought: who is he? To me he was only Giacomo Casanova, he had lost his identity. Did he have such a nerve? I don’t know, the thing is that after some time I met a Spanish man who reminded me of him. He was a scoundrel who tried to win over 7 women: he gave them the same book and wrote the same messages. Just to ensure he wouldn’t make a mistake! That is what inspired the idea of the book and character of Francisco Valiente, the Casanova of the XXI century. A guy who is born poor and good and becomes rich and ruthless. Yes, I wanted to write a book of maximums because I have never liked living in the grey. Francisco is a man who believes in the family and companions, with seven children: but he is also a guy who does as he pleases. In the book there is a clear accusation of this double moral, although they say “he who sins and prays comes out even”… It seems that only love is capable of redeeming him. During the last 24 hours of his physical presence he has the chance to see where he has gone
wrong. His relatives begin to parade before his coffin and he realizes that he paradoxically starts to climb and steal, to prove to the girl he fell in love with that he is worthy of her. So Mr Valiente did not live up to his name. He creates a character that he ends up destroying. He needs more and more seduction, more cheating, more stealing, more corruption, because it gives him the adrenaline he needs. The surrounding family and society are also burdened, aren’t they? Of course, especially in a society where appe-
arances are so important. All the characters happened to live through the final stage of the Franco regime and their childhood was marked forever. For instance, while Morgana (Francisco’s wife) was totally in love when she married, Alma (Francisco’s lover) married to please her parents. Is it unavoidable to speak of politics? No! “Gabo” (Gabriel García Márquez) said that “the great political commitment of a writer is to write well”. He endorsed this absolutely! I like to tell stories and want people to be taken into flight by them. Magic idealism seems to be a good method. It’s the magic of the instant that provides the emotion felt by the character. Its one of the signs of identity throughout your work. I love working with the subject of the human being, and his innermost self. We are made up of feelings, with lights and shades which leave us a lot to reflect upon. Going beyond the story, when you think of the book are you thinking of the product? No. Advertising is further and further away in my life. I lived as prey to the word for many years because when you are writing an advertisement certain things need to be highlighted according to certain limits. The word now means freedom to me. El Renacer del cine francés Muchos historiadores consideran que los inventores del cine fueron los hermanos Lumière, que ingeniaron el cinematógrafo y grabaron la célebre L’Arrivée d’un train en gare de La Ciotat. Cualquier estudiante que desee hacer carrera en el mundo del celuloide debería grabarse a fuego la escena de esta proyección: un tren llega a su destino, pasando muy cerca de la cámara y reduciendo la velocidad. Ahora parece trivial, pero aquella imagen en movimiento, captada en 1895, consiguió dejar con la boca abierta -y con un buen susto- a todos los que la vieron. Y como estas, muchas. En 1902 llegó Georges Meliès y su visionario empleo de los efectos especiales: color, tramoyas y toda la imaginación del mundo para embarcarse en el Voyage Dans la Lune (El Viaje a la luna). Después,

durante el periodo de entreguerras, Jacques Feyder se consagraría como el fundador del realismo poético; Jean Renoir presentaba su maravillosa La Règle du Jeu (La Regla de juego); y Marcel Carné filmaba Les Enfants du paradis, considerada como la mejor película francesa del siglo XX.
Gracias a ello, un grupo de jóvenes amantes de los cineclubes y curtidos en el difícil ejercicio de la crítica gracias a su participación en la revista Cahiers du Cinéma, revolucionaron el panorama cinematográfico. François Truffaut, Jean-Luc Godard, Jacques Rivette, Éric Rohmer, Claude Chabrol…, todos ellos formaron parte imprescindible del movimiento conocido como la Nouvelle Vague (la Nueva Ola). Basta una palabra para definirlo: ruptura. Crearon obras que jamás antes se habían creado, añadiendo subversión política, cuestionando las reglas de la ficción y apostando por la libertad de expresión y la viveza de la luz natural. Rodaban en las calles, en casas de verdad. Empleaban planos desconocidos y travellings imposibles; y con todo ello, convirtieron al director en el auténtico motor de la obra. Éxito reciente Comparar la producción cinematográfica de ahora con la de entonces sería un poco injusto. Pero los números hablan y con elocuencia. En los últimos años el cine francés está experimentando un éxito de crítica y taquilla más que considerable. Si bien los 80 y 90 no fueron tan trascendentales, es cierto que nos dejaron perlas como la hermosa historia de amor entre Juliette Binoche y Denis Lavant en Les amants du Pont-Neuf (Los amantes del Pont-Neuf), o la célebre comedia Le dîner de cons (La cena de los idiotas), dirigida por Francis Veber. Ambas encarnaban lo mejor de los géneros que siempre hemos reconocido en la filmografía francesa, y además, reabrieron la puerta de entrada al mercado de otros países.

Funcionó muy bien por la trama, pero también por el elenco de actores y actrices de la película, desde Marion Cotillard y Jean Dujardine, hasta Benoît Magimel o François Cluzet. Precisamente, Cluzet es uno de los protagonistas del gran éxito del cine francés de los últimos tiempos: Intocable. Any student who wishes to make a career in the world of celluloid should vividly record the scene of this projection: a train arriving to its destination, passing very close to the camara and slowing down. It now seems trivial but those images in movement, captured in 1895, left all who saw it open-mouthed and stunned. There are many more examples like these. In 1902 Georges Meliès arrived with his visionary use of special effects: colour, stage machinery, and all the imagination in the world to embark upon the Voyage Dans la Lune (Journey to the Moon). created works like none before, adding political subversion, questioning the rules of fiction and opting for freedom of speech and the vivaciousness of natural light. They filmed on the streets and in real homes. They used unheard of plans, and seemingly impossible track-in shots; all of which allowed the director to become the real engine of the film. Recent Success To compare today’s cinema productions to those of that time would be a bit unfair. However the figures speak clearly. In recent years French cinema has achieved great success both with the critics and the box office. Even if the 80s and 90s were not so transcendental it is true that we were given some great gems, such as the beautiful love story between Juliette Binoche and Denis Lavant in Les amants du Pont-Neuf (Lovers of the Bridge or Lovers of the Pont-Neuf) and the famous comedy Le dîner de cons (The Dinner Game) directed by Francis Veber. Both offered the best of cinema genre that we have always recognized in French movies, and they also reopened the door to the markets in other countries. Profitable Productions Comedies and films on intellectual themes produced in France over the past 10-15 years have been loudly applauded by the general public and the critics. The emergence of Amélie, directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet and starring Audrey Tautou was key to the relaunch of French cinema. It became a true phenomenon, above all thanks to a marvelous script full of extravagant characters, and with situations bordering on fantastic. The film received five Oscar nominations, although it was the general public that made the greatest appraisal: Amélie is the second, most successful box office French film of all times with more than 32 million spectators. It surpassed its American competitor (i.e. Training Day and Monster’s Ball) and made a total 174 million Dollars.
Another great impact was caused by ‘The Choir Boys’ in 2004. The magic of song left spectators so amazed that box office takings were 71 million Euros (during its last weekend showing in the US it made 114,000 Dollars). It won the Oscar for the Best Foreign Film and the sound track was a great success. Four years later ‘Welcome to the North’ arrived in our country; a comedy that surely was to lead the way for similar productions. Directed by the comedian Dany Boon it became at the time, in the most successful box office for a French film. More than 20,500,000 people saw it, bringing it just behind the success of The Titanic. The film makes innocent fun of the cultural friction between the Northern and Southern Gauls, relating the story of a post office worker who, to his misfortune, is sent to the most northern region of the Country. In 2011 ‘Unimportant Little Lies’ arrived to our screens, directed by Guillaume Canet. Although the story starts badly and ends even worse, in the middle it relates the comedy of an idyllic summer of a group of friends whose relationship deteriorates due to their continuous cheating. It became the film of the year in France with more than 5 million spectators and its release made 222,000 Euros, way ahead of ‘The Beaver’ starring Mel Gibson. The plot worked well, as did the cast of actors and actresses; from Marion Cotillard and Jean Dujardine to Benoit Magimel and François Cluzet. Cluzet is precisely one of the stars of the greatest success in French cinema in recent times: Untouchable. This is the third most widely viewed film in France (with 19 million spectators) and the greatest box office success made history for a foreign film, beating ‘Amélie’ and ‘Life is Beautiful’. dary friendship between two outcasts of current society: firstly, (Cluzet) is a well-born quadriplegic who lives enclosed in his Parisian palace and is impeded not only by his fears of his limited mobility but also by those around him. Secondly we have (Omar Sy) a young negro, ex-convict and from the outskirts, three factors that make him the least suitable candidate to be social assistant to the millionaire. However, he becomes the perfect companion. The patient-carer relationship is born and ends up being reciprocal because other people’s pain is the motor to beat your own. Untouchable doesn’t aim for tears; it’s a universal comedy and allows anyone to laugh or cry. That was its great secret. If you haven’t had enough: don’t miss “The Class” and “Love” (recently awarded an Oscar for the best foreign film), two of the most recent French films that certainly confirm the healthy condition of French cinema.

El Rey de las Ediciones Limitadas Romain Jerome es una marca muy joven, sobretodo si la comparamos con grandes maisons como Patek Philippe o Audemars Piguet, que nacieron durante la segunda mitad del sigo XIX. Tan solo hace 9 años que RJ se instaló en la Rue du Marché de Ginebra, la idílica cuna de la alta relojería. Entonces, la marca debía pensar qué podía ofrecer respecto a sus principales competidoras, mucho más consolidadas. Y empezó por los cimientos, respondiendo a la pregunta que cualquier empresa debe plantearse antes de iniciar su actividad: ¿qué podemos aportar? Es justamente aquí donde radica el valor añadido de Romain Jerome. Su equipo de trabajo apostó por el reloj emocional, es decir, por las piezas que además de su calidad técnica o material, tienen un significado especial para los clientes. La idea era entrar a formar parte del universo del comprador, de la misma manera que lo hace aquel disco o aquel par de zapatos que compramos con nuestro primer sueldo y que jamás podremos olvidar.
Un tesoro en la muñeca Conceptualmente hablando, los relojes de Romain Jerome parten de un vínculo emocional que tiene dos vertientes: por un lado, la inspiración de la naturaleza a través del mar, la tierra y el aire; y por otro, el reflejo de las grandes efemérides. La propia marca dio nombre a su razón de ser: la extracción del “ADN de las famosas leyendas”. Y no es una metáfora, es literal. Lo demuestra el Steampunk Heavy Metal Auto, un modelo que forma parte de la colección Titanic-DNA. Su bisel es resultado de la fusión entre auténtico acero procedente del trasatlántico, que reposa a 3.840 metros bajo el mar; y acero entregado por Garland & Wolf, naviera de Belfast, donde fue construido el Titanic hace un siglo. Solamente se fabricaron 100 unidades.

Romain Jerome is a very young brand, above all if we compare it to the great houses such as Patek Philippe and Audemars Piguet, which began during the second half of the XIX Century. RJ was only 9 years old when he settled in the Rue du Marché in Geneva, the idyllic seat of high class watch and clockmaking. The brand must have wondered what it could offer with respect to its main, much more consolidated, competitors. Thus began the foundations, in answer to the question any company should ask before starting its activity: what can we offer? This is exactly where the added value of Romain Jerome lies. His team of workers opted for an emotional themed watch, that is, for items that as well as technical and material quality, have a special meaning for his clients. The idea was to enter to form part of the universe of the buyer, in the same way as music or the first pair of shoes bought with our first salary, which that we will never forget.
A treasure on the wrist Conceptually speaking, Romain Jerome watches come from an emotional link with two aspects: on the one side, inspired by nature of the sea, earth and air; on the other, the reflection of the great ephemerides. In honour of its 125th anniversary, the company created a timekeeper whose face resembles a time capsule, and contains bronze particles from “Miss Liberty”. Garret Mcnamara (Pittsfield, USA, 1967) es un loco del surf. Dicen que se levanta muy temprano y que incluso antes de desayunar, enciende su ordenador portátil para conectarse a Internet y consultar una página de centros meteorológicos de todo el mundo. De la misma manera que un alpinista busca las cumbres más altas e inaccesibles, él se recrea analizando borrascas, dirección del viento y marejadas. Y la rutina le trajo algo inesperado. Las coordenadas de una especie de tormenta perfecta le situaban a 14.000 kilómetros de su residencia hawaiana. En la pantalla aparecía una pequeña porción del litoral portugués bañada por la furia del Océano Atlántico, marcada en rojo. Era la costa de Praia do Norte, en Nazaré, situada a unos 120 Km de Lisboa. Allí se casó Garret con su mujer y allí decidió ir de nuevo, pero en esta ocasión, para jugarse la vida. Con la ayuda de un compañero que lo remolcaba (tow-surfing), el norteamericano logró cabalgar una ola de 30 metros de altura (equivalente a un edificio de 9 pisos de altura), superando el record que él mismo había logrado dos años atrás. Los medios de comunicación de todo el mundo se hicieron eco de la hazaña. Pirado, temerario, inconsciente; desde nuestra perspectiva, cualquiera de estos adjetivos serviría para describirle. Pero los vecinos de Nazaré, que debido a su agresiva climatología se ha convertido en una especie de santuario para los surfistas más intrépidos, hablan de él como si fuera un héroe. ¿Lo es? Mejor que nos lo explique él mismo. Garret Mcnamara (Pittsfield, USA, 1967) is crazy about surfing. They say he gets up very early and, even before breakfast, he turns on his laptop to connect to Internet and consult a site of meteorological centers all based over the world. The same way a mountain climber searches for the highest and least accessible summits, he enjoys analysing storms, wind direction and tidal conditions. This routine brought him something unexpected. The coordinates of a kind of perfect storm was about 14,000 Kilometers from his Hawaiian residence. On the screen a small stretch of the Portuguese coast appeared, bathed by the fury of the Atlantic Ocean, marked in red. It was the Coast of Praia do Norte in Nazaré, about 120 Km from Lisbon. Garret and his wife were married there and he decided to go again, but this time to risk his life. With the help of a friend who tow-surfed him the American managed to ride a 30 meter high wave (equivalent to the height of a 9-storey building), beating the record he himself had achieved two years before. The media from all over the world picked up the story of his great accomplishment. Nutty, fearless, unwitting; from our perspective any of these adjectives would certainly describe him. However, the local people of Nazaré, where thanks to an aggressive climate has made the place a kind of sanctuary for the most daring surfers, speak of him as if he were a hero. Is he? A los 17 años Garret McNamara ya participó en la prestigiosa Triple Corona hawaiana, reservada para los mejores del mundo y en la que han llegado a participar representantes españoles, como Aritz Aranburu. Con el paso de los años, McNamara se fue haciendo un nombre entre los primeros espadas del surf. Eso implicaba desplazarse por todo el Globo, desde Suráfrica hasta Irlanda, pasando por Tasmania, Chile o las islas más remotas del Pacífico. Aún no había cumplido los 30 años y ya había consolidado un buen nivel de vida, gracias sobretodo a los suculentos patrocinios de empresas japonesas. De hecho, en Japón lo adoran, seguramente porque él hizo el esfuerzo de aprender su idioma. Pero Garret se cansó del surf convencional. A pesar de su buen palmarés, siempre se le consideró como un deportista con más bravura que técnica. Por todo ello, se apuntó al tow-surfing, una modalidad que empezó a coger fuerza en los 90. Y de aquí, a la búsqueda de las heroicidades. Una de las más sonoras sucedió en Alaska. Allí, el hawaiano fue capaz de montar una ola formada a partir del desplome de un apabullante iceberg. I’ve been surfing giant waves since I was more or less 17 years old. They say that you are one of the pioneers of paddle surfing (with the help of an oar) and tow-surfing. Well, rowing on a huge wave isn’t done as it was in the old times. Now they tow us. Most of the guys appear in the water with their sea scooters and tow us to the starting line, then collect us after the wave has subsided. Less romantic, more efficient. Yes, tow-surfing allows us to gain more speed and maneuver better. It’s also a lot safer because your companions are watching over you all the time. You were born in Pittsfield, a town with no sea. How did you start surfing? When I was 11 my mother, brother and I moved to Hawaii. We haven’t stopped surfing since then. Did your passion for surf rub off on your brother? Yes, although I think
we both helped, pushing each other to be the best. There’s always some competition between brothers. When did you feel you were prepared to enter the professional circuit? I don’t think I was prepared the first time, it was more by chance. However the second time, when I was 35, I plunged into competition fully. I made a note of my objectives and everything I needed to do to achieve them. I was much more aware. In general, those of us looking at your profession from the outside believe that surfers live very well: travelling all over the world, meeting beautiful girls. How much of this is true? We do have a marvelous life, especially because we love what we do and we have the chance to get to know new places, and cultures. It seems almost mystical. Absolutely! Surfing has healing powers. Is there also a lot of work involved? Yes. If you want to make a living out of surfing you need to sacrifice some things. There is a lot of training to do and demands to meet for our sponsors. We need to keep them happy! Do you consider it a profession or a way of life? It’s a passion for me. It’s what I live for. Maybe it’s even more for other people. The wave you recently rode in Portugal was 30 meters high. How could you keep a cool head? That’s when I feel more alive! Did you feel you were risking your life? El Riva 122 ‘Mythos’ será producido por el astillero CRN en su planta de Ancona, especializada en la construcción de mega yates de hasta 90 metros.
La nueva embarcación proyectada por Riva es toda una declaración de intenciones. Un mito (‘mythos’, en griego) es un relato semifantástico que expone las costumbres, creencias y tradiciones de un pueblo a través de la convivencia entre dioses, héroes y seres humanos. Todo cuanto ocurre en él es extraordinario, y por ello la Officina Italiana Design y el centro de investigación del grupo Ferretti, el Advanced Yacht Technology, han escogido este nombre para su creación. Mauro Micheli, su gran artífice, pretende marcar un antes y un después con este Riva 122 Mythos: “proviene de los instintos y a ellos la entregamos. The new yacht by Riva is certainly a declaration of intent. A myth (‘mythos’ in Greek) is a semi fantastic story that describes the habits, beliefs and traditions of the people through living among gods, heroes and humans. Everything that happens on it is quite extraordinary. That is why the Italian Office of Design and the Ferretti investigation center, the Advanced Yacht Technology, have selected this name for his creation. Mauro Micheli, his great creator, wishes to mark a before and after by way of the Riva 122 Mythos: “It comes from instincts and they will be awarded. Its careful design and the definition in detail have made it a milestone in the nautical sector”. Initially we must say that we are talking about the largest aluminium sports yacht ever built by a shipyard, 37 meters in length.

The guests’ cabins are located immediately after, while the crew area is at the bow. From the sun pad on the main deck you can reach the bathing platform at the stern where there are two garages designed to host the yacht’s tender (on the left) and a jet ski (on the right). The platform has been designed with an electro hydraulic system that allows the users to easily reach the water.

Un hotel ‘boutique’, muy en boga en esta última década, se caracteriza por el valor arquitectónico y patrimonial del edificio que lo alberga, por su oferta gastronómica, por el lujo que preside todos sus espacios y por la exquisita atención de sus trabajadores. Pero siempre hay quien exige más, y por supuesto, siempre hay quien está dispuesto a darlo. Solo así se entiende que hayan proliferado los hoteles ‘micro-boutique’, una evolución natural del anterior y el polo opuesto de los grandes resorts. De este modo, si usted viaja a Londres, por ejemplo, podrá alojarse en el mastodóntico Royal National, que tiene 1.630 habitaciones; en The Gore, un lujoso establecimiento de 50 estancias; y también en el asombroso 40 WiNKS (expresión que en inglés significa ‘cabezadita’), ejemplar de esta última especie de hoteles. Aunque solo dispone de dos habitaciones, el Para quien siempre exige 40 WiNKS se ha convertido en una de las más, han nacido los hoteles opciones más chic, cotizadas y difíciles de micro-boutique, el polo conseguir de la capital británica. Otro de los grandes referentes de esta tendencia es el Hotel Droog, inaugurado hace menos de un año en Amsterdam.
Solamente posee una habitación, una suite ubicada en la última planta de un edificio del siglo XVII. Se trata de un espacio vanguardista de 700 m2 que tiene tiendas, una galería de arte, una sala de lectura, un restaurante y hasta un pequeño huerto urbano.

Una apuesta radical El 3Rooms Hotel funciona en París desde hace unos tres años. Situado en el corazón del barrio de Le Marais, está ligado a la creatividad del diseñador franco-tunecino Azzedine Alaia. Fue concebido como una extensión de su propio apartamento y pretende ofrecer a sus clientes un sitio cálido, una especie de pied à terre impregnado de su sello personal y próximo a su propio atelier de costura. Dispone de tres habitaciones dignas de ocupar la portada de una revista de decoración con piezas de Jean Prouvé, Jean Nouvel, Marc Newson o Arne Jacobsen. A boutique hotel, very much in vogue in the last decade is defined by the architectonic value and cultural heritage of the building where it is housed, by its cuisine, the luxury presiding throughout its premises, and the staff’s exquisite attention. Founded in 1237 as Cölln, Berlin was successively the capital of the Kingdom of Prussia (1701-1918), the German Empire (18711918), the Weimar Republic (1919-1933), the Third Reich (1933-1945), the German Democratic Republic starting in 1949 and the entire country after it was reunified with the Federal Republic in 1990. There can be no doubt: Berlin has always been hegemonic and powerful, and in fact today it is the vast engine pulling Europe behind it. It is a modern, striking, eclectic city capable of mixing the new architecture of Potsdamer Platz, the government district, and the Art House Tacheles centre with the late 19th century buildings in the Charlottenburg district. Monumental Berlin Spring and summer bring the most pleasant temperatures of the year for strolling around Berlin. Even though the legend which says that you can stroll from one of the most elegant boulevards in the city into alternative neighbourhood in a matter of seconds is true, it is also certain that there are monumental attractions that you just cannot miss. Brandenburg Gate (1791), the symbol of the triumph of peace over weapons, is one of the oldest gateways to the city. It is a huge construction 26 metres tall whose neoclassical style is reminiscent of the structures on
Athens’ Acropolis. After it was officially unveiled, it enjoyed the splendour it deserved as it watched members of the royalty and even Napoleon’s troops pass under it. Just a few minutes’ walk away is the Reichstag, the headquarters of the German Parliament. Even though this is a historical building that dates back to 1894, it stands out for its spectacular glass dome which was redesigned by prestigious architect Norman Foster when the Reichstag was rebuilt.
