KOREAN GARDEN & EAST ASIAN ARTS CULTURAL CENTER PROPOSAL HUNTINGTON LIBRARY SAN MARINO, CA

PROJECT 1
KOREAN GARDEN & EAST ASIAN ARTS CULTURAL CENTER SITE LOCATION: HUNTINGTON LIBRARY SAN MARINO, CA Cooperators: Hyunji Kim | Lauren McKenna | Dan Scheir
California LA County Los Angeles Huntington Library
A unique opportunity was provided by the Huntington Library to propose a conceptual design for one of the first traditional Korean Garden in Southern California that will be developed adjacent to the well-known Chinese Garden and Japanese Garden in the Huntington Library. The addition of Korean Garden to the existing Asian Gardens will complete the collection of the three East Asian Garden style that are intricately related both culturally and historically, sharing the origin of garden design theory that branched out and evolved in their unique ways with the influence of the climate and culture of each countries. The tasks included the East Asian Arts Cultural Center, which will become a space for various workshops and galleries. The challenge was to develop an initial design and visualization of the cultural center that will reflect the East Asian culture in an un-biased manner. The general approach for the Korean Garden directed by the Huntington Library was the traditional Korean Retreat Garden, however, the concept of Feng Shui, the idea of geomancy that is shared by the cultures, were also to be considered in the remaining design within the given boundary, which will enrich the relationship of the three East Asian Gardens.
Korean Gardens are generally considered a rather naturalistic design approach, while the Japanese Gardens are symbolic with the careful positioning and representation of each element, and Chinese Gardens being picturesque, with multiple viewpoints created through the pavilions spread across the gardens. The artificial elements typically observed in Korean Gardens may contrast the surrounding nature with its strong geometric shapes. One of the traditional Korean Garden design is consists of a geometrically shaped water body, which contains islands, also commonly formed in a geometric shape, with a pavilion that serve as a resting and viewing space.

PROJECT 2
HUA ZHONG UNIVERSITY CAMPUS URBAN DESIGN SITE LOCATION: HUA ZHONG UNIVERSITY WUHAN, CHINA Cooperators: Nick Chau | Gustavo Coronilla
China Hubei Region Wuhan City Hua Zhong University
The first international project made possible with the collaboration/sponsorship of SWA Group Laguna Beach Office. The urban scale design project started with case studies of different approach of urban cities and the research on climate of Wuhan that are much different from the previous projects. The objectives included the development of unique relationship of the water edge conditions, which were challenged by the problems, starting with flooding, that result from the abundant water that the region gains. The project site that provided the opportunity for the experience was Hua Zhong University of Science and Technology, also the partner where the international collaboration and workshop that bridged the students together took place. With the main campus exceeding 1,160 acres, the university offered the opportunity of experimenting the water edge conditions through the underutilized canals, rivers, and one of the largest lake right adjacent to the campus site. Also woven in the campus is an urban city scape that provide the living for the students and faculty creating a distinct urban fabric. The water edge condition will be blended with the urban edge, focusing on intimacy and interaction, a concept that developed through the study of the culture and history of China.
The initial process began with understanding the site context and analyzing the characteristic in relation to the issues that will be challenged in the design process. With the given opportunity to visit the site for exploration and observation of the elements and the actual issues, the important process of analyzing the project site also allowed to be an interesting experience. The main element that became both the issue and opportunity was water. The existing canal that extend through the site was affected by the waste water that has been released from the surrounding facility, which floods across the site during the rainy season causing issues beyond a simple flooding event that is hazardous already by itself. The proposed design suggested a possible solution while creating a new urbanized center for the project site.

PROJECT 3
HIJIYAMA RIKUGUN CEMETRY
SITE LOCATION: HIJIYAMA PARK HIROSHIMA, JAPAN Cooperators: Yukaha Kidera | Kuniharu Tamai
Japan Hiroshima
Hiroshima Hijiyama Park
A historic army cemetery located on Hijiyama Mountain in Hiroshima, Japan, which was originally developed in 1872. The cemetery contains the relic of soldiers that fought in the war starting from the Satsuma Rebellion in 1877, which is known as the last civil war within Japan, to the soldiers from World War 2. The significant of the cemetery is that it also contains the tombstone of soldiers of foreign countries, including China, Germany, and France; the soldiers from the Eight Nation Alliance that developed in response to the Boxer Rebellion of 1900 in China. The injured soldiers were transported to Hiroshima for medical treatment, and those that passed were buried with respect. Historically, the Military attachĂŠ of the countries had visited the Hijiyama Army Cemetery to express gratitude which promoted the international relationship between Japan. The nuclear incident during World War 2 has once destructed the cemetery and it was reconstructed in 1960 in the current condition. The design proposal aimed to recreate the celebrated army cemetery into a quiet and comfortable space for the families and visitors, reflecting the culture of respect and peacefulness in the material selection and design details.
Scale 0
The Hijiyama Army Cemetery extends linearly with an observation space at the end that looks over the city of Hiroshima from the small mountain which the site is located. The requirement was the entrance gate that will also serve as a space to offer flowers and incense where the materials were selected to create a solemn atmosphere for the historic cemetery. Also, the storage and resting space were included for the community volunteers that supports and maintain the space.

UNEARTHING POTENCY This project showcases our experience of the Salton Sea in a personal level of interpretation and exploration. Through research and exploration of the Salton Sea first hand, the unseen attributes of the site were converted into visual patterns and shapes that are translated by our experiences and perception. The attributes that we included are: Wind, Landform, Bird Energy and Waves, by showcasing these patterns, the relationships between the four slowly emerge, resulting in the mapping on this board.
