FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE What is Functional Medicine? By Dr. Michael J. Badanek, BS, DC, CNS, DACBN, DCBCN, DM(P)
F
unctional Medicine is patient-centered medical healing at its best. Instead of looking at and treating health problems as isolated diseases, it treats individuals who may have bodily symptoms, imbalances, and dysfunctions. As the graphic of an iceberg shows, a named disease such as diabetes, cancer, or fibromyalgia might be visible above the surface, but according to Functional Medicine, the cause lies in the altered physiology below the surface. Usually, the cause of the disease and its symptoms is an underlying dysfunction or an imbalance of bodily systems. Named diseases are just the tip of the iceberg. Below the surface, according to Functional Medicine, are the real causes of a patient's health problems. If health care treats just the tip of the iceberg, it rarely leads to long-term relief and vibrancy. Identifying and treating the underlying root cause or causes, as Functional Medicine does, has a much better chance to successfully resolve a patient's health challenges. Using scientific principles, advanced diagnostic testing, and treatments other than drugs or surgery, Functional Medicine restores balance in the body's primary physiological processes. The goal is the patient's lifelong optimal health.
How Functional Medicine Heals a Key Health Care Gap Today's health care system is in trouble because it applies a medical management model that works well for acute health problems to chronic health problems, where it is much less successful. If you have a heart attack, accident, or sudden lung infection such as pneumonia, you certainly want a quick-thinking doctor to use all the quick-acting resources of modern medicine, such as life-saving technology, surgery, and antibiotics. We are all grateful for such interventions. However, jumping in with drugs, surgery, and other acute care treatments often does not succeed in helping those with chronic, debilitating ailments, such as diabetes, heart disease, or arthritis. Another approach is needed. www.GoNaturalAwakenings.com

healthbriefs Olive Leaf Outperforms Diabetes Drug
O
live leaf may provide nature’s answer to diabetes treatment. A recent study from the University of Auckland, in New Zealand, suggests that olive leaf extract can help reduce insulin resistance and increase insulin production by beta cells in the pancreas. The researchers tested 46 middle-aged, obese adults at risk for developing metabolic syndrome-related Type 2 diabetes. In the double-blind, placebo-controlled study, olive leaf extract outperformed the diabetes drug Metformin and “significantly improved insulin sensitivity and pancreatic beta-cell secretory capacity,” according to the researchers. Insulin helps escort glucose into the body’s cells.
Supplements Could Save $70 Billion in Medical Costs
I
n a Frost & Sullivan study report authored by Christopher Shanahan and Robert de Lorimier, Ph.D., the use of dietary supplements, including B vitamins, phytosterols and dietary fiber, could reduce the cost of treating coronary artery disease in the U.S. by nearly $50 billion over the next seven years. In addition, healthcare costs related to diabetes, vision problems and osteoporosis could be reduced by nearly $20 billion collectively with the use of certain supplements. The projections were based on cost-benefit analysis comparing a series of scenarios to assess the effect on overall disease management costs if an identified high-risk population were to avoid costly medical events by increasing their intake of dietary supplements purchased out-of-pocket versus no supplement usage. “The healthcare system spends a tremendous amount of money treating chronic disease, but has failed to focus on ways to reduce those costs through prevention,” says Steve Mister, president of the Council for Responsible Nutrition Foundation. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, only 3 percent of U.S. healthcare costs are spent on the prevention of chronic diseases.

Cheaper Solar Panels Spur Job Growth
S
olar industry jobs are up nearly 20 percent in the 14 months through November 2013 as cheaper panels and rising electricity rates spurred people to turn to solar, according to a report by the nonprofit Solar Foundation research group. At latest count, solar companies employ nearly 143,000 solar workers, up more than 23,000 from September 2012—a job growth rate that’s 10 times faster than the national average and is helping local economies, according to the foundation. The industry is expected to create 22,000 new jobs in 2014, although at a slower pace than 2013. Solar firms surveyed in the report said that more than 50 percent of their business and homeowner customers turned to solar to save money, while nearly 23 percent said they invested in panels because costs are now comparable with utility rates. The report noted that the cost of solar equipment has fallen about 50 percent since the beginning of 2010.

hy not expand on the spring tradition of home cleaning by appraising existing home furnishings and decor to see how rearrangements can freshen the whole presentation? Employing a few basic creative strategies will yield long-lasting beauty, cost savings, health benefits, and utility, all adding up to enhanced sustainability. Secondhand items readily spruce up interiors when they are thoughtfully selected. Look for gently used, new-to-you items—ranging from furniture and lamps to accent pieces like pottery—at antique and thrift shops, yard and estate sales or via online forums such as CraigsList.com and Freecycle.org. Seeking out fair trade items helps support a fair wage for artisans around the world. Plants enliven and beautify any space while cleaning indoor air, according to a recent study by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and Associated Landscape Contractors of America. Plants cited as especially effective in removing formaldehyde, benzene, and carbon monoxide from the air include bamboo palm, Chinese evergreen, English ivy, gerbera (African) daisy, chrysanthemum and peace lily. Pot them in used jars or other repurposed containers to conserve materials and add character and more personality to home decor. Furniture arrangements are best when they allow light to flow through spaces with ample allowance for moving about the room. The ideal setup facilitates worktable projects and small-group conversations. Round tables help make everyone feel like they belong, according to green living expert Annie Bond. Sustainable kitchen wares are often the classiest. Sturdy pots, pans and kettles, like Le Creuset and Picquot Ware, may offer replacement parts and lifetime guarantees; Bialetti and Bodum coffee makers and Littala glassware are durable and long-lasting. While some may cost more upfront, their longevity saves money over time. Then there’s always grandma’s iron skillet. Additional sources: GreenPages.org and GreenAmerica.org

Greener and Cleaner by Nuris Lemire, MS, OTR/L, NC
J
ust in time for a little spring cleaning! Here are some tips on how to turn your house into a greener and cleaner home. Here’s a look at some of the simplest changes a person can make, which can help their house, health, and pocketbook immediately. Turn out the lights! Did you know that according to the 2012 EIA Residential Energy Consumption Survey, Florida rates 40% higher than the average for the entire United States? Remembering to turn out lights when you’re leaving a room is just one small step you can take towards reducing your electricity consumption and thus save some money on your bill. Unplugging infrequently used electronics helps out as well—even while a machine is off, it can drain electricity from the outlet. Even unplugged, many devices are putting out EMF (Electro Magnetic Field) emissions: Wi-fi, microwave, computer, video, cell phone, wireless house phones, printers, laptops, palm computers, baby monitors, and more. Utility companies’ electric meters are beginning to go wireless in many areas, with wireless devices at the pole and some even in the house. You’re also being affected by business and public service communication systems including cell towers, broadband towers and routers, GPS, etc. In short, all wireless technology that communicates without being hardwired to the device it is communicating with is affecting you. This EMF pollution means positive ions, which create the free radicals that contribute to diagnoses such as cancer,

Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, brain cancer, asthma, heart problems, insomnia, allergies, multiple sclerosis, high blood pressure, brain fog, ADD/ADHD, forgetfulness, digestive disorders—the list goes on and on. Even some granite countertops are known to have ionizing radiation! See p.12 for an article on how to protect yourself and your family against all these “bad vibes.” Use both sides of your sink for dishes. If you have side-by-side sinks, clean on one side—fill the sink with a few inches of water and dish soap. Use this side to soak all your dishes and do a preliminary rinse of them once you’ve scrubbed. Stack them in the second sink and then rinse them all at
once. If you don’t have double sinks, you can use any tub large enough to hold your dishes before you rinse them off. This will cut down drastically on water wasted just going down the drain in between dishes. The average family household uses 6,732 gallons of water in a month—money down the drain! Watch the temperature. Before leaving the house, adjust the thermostat so that your AC/heat isn’t turning on and running while no one is home to enjoy them. Once you’re in the habit of doing this, you’ll see that it will save a lot on your electric bill. Use house plants. They help clean the air inside the house. These are just a few simple things you can do to ensure a cleaner, healthier, thriftier home environment. For additional information, call Lemire Clinic at 352-291-9459, or visit www. The electrician installed a relay so I can switch off the power on that side of the house at night. Now, I sleep six or seven hours,” which he characterizes as “a profound change.” He also suggests turning off and moving cell phones away from beds. Mollner then hardwired the computers in his home, eliminated Wi-Fi and rearranged the electronic equipment in his home office. Kim Cook, an energy practitioner in Mission Viejo, California, specializes in Eden Energy Medicine and Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT). Cook decided not to buy a house she was initially interested in because it was in a hot spot. When Cook used her meter to chart frequencies at home, it also prompted her to move her bedroom clock radio to a different bureau. “It’s no longer sitting right at our heads,” she notes. Plus, “I don’t put my cell phone on my body and it bothers me that my son puts his in his pocket.” An overarching observation from Cook’s professional practice is that increasing numbers of people in pain are interested in energy medicine because they’re so frustrated with Western medicine. She observes, “Pain is blocked energy, and people are learning how to unblock it naturally.” The World Health Organization (WHO) launched the International EMF Project in 1996 because of rising public health concerns due to the surge in EMF sources. After reviewing extensive research and thousands of articles, the organization can’t confirm—or deny—the existence of health consequences from exposure to low-level EMFs. But in 2011, the WHO International Agency for Research on Cancer classified the electromagnetic radiation from cell phones as possibly carcinogenic to humans, based on increased risk for glioma, a malignant brain cancer. Lloyd Morgan, a senior researcher with the nonprofit Environmental Health Trust and lead author of the internationally endorsed report, Cellphones and Brain Tumors, goes
Printed on recycled paper to protect the environment
further, unequivocally stating, “Cell phone radiation is a carcinogen.” In our own environment, we can regulate EMF, says Iowan Camilla Rees, founder of the educational petition website ElectromagneticHealth. org and Campaign for Radiation Free Schools on Facebook; she is the co-author of Public Health SOS: The Shadow Side of the Wireless Revolution and Morgan’s cell phone report. Says Rees, “You can buy a meter,
avoid using cordless phones and baby monitors, and change your cell phone behavior. The harmful effects of cell phones decrease with distance; just by holding the cell phone six inches from your head, there is a 10,000-fold reduction of risk.” Priscilla Goudreau-Santos is a freelance writer and owner of Priscilla Goudreau Public Relations & Marketing, in Charlotte, NC.
Ways to Reduce Risk Although electromagnetic field (EMF) activity vibrates all around us, there are simple ways to reduce adverse health effects in daily indoor environments.
Computers 4 Hardwire all Internet connections instead of using Wi-Fi. 4 Power a laptop using a three-prong grounded plug and then plug in a separate, hardwired keyboard (this minimizes both the exposure to wireless radiation and the effects from the laptop battery’s magnetic field). 4 Use a grounding mouse pad to minimize effects of the electric field from the computer.

Women Suffer Needlessly by Dr. Michael J. Badanek, DC, BS, CNS, DACBN, DCBCN, DM(P)
I
t never ceases to amaze me at the similarities among the women I treat in my practice. Day after day, the histories given to me are so strikingly similar that one would think these women were related somehow by family or genetic traits. This is not the case, but a definite pattern is growing out of control in mainstream medicine. Unfortunately, women are being pigeonholed into specific groups and are not being taken seriously—or, worse, are being misdiagnosed, and therefore mistreated, by my medical brethren.
Premenstrual problems For women suffering with premenstrual issues such as severe cramping, heavy bleeding, and PMS (Pre-Menstrual Syndrome), each month their daily life activities are disrupted. Some even suffer total debilitation with the onset of the menstrual cycle. Most of these unfortunate patients are “treated” with birth control pills and analgesics. Of course this does absolutely nothing in addressing the cause of the problem, it just masks the symptoms. This eventually leads to more serious problems such as PCOS (Poly-Cystic Ovarian Syndrome), endometriosis, and even ovarian cancer in the majority of cases. These conditions are totally treatable and reversible with alternative functional medicine. Giving a woman birth control pills to mask the symptoms of her condition(s) may be giving her a death sentence from the
14
secondary side effects of estrogen therapy. You see, the body is not deficient in estrogen, it is severely deficient in specific nutrients. The pharmaceutical forms of estrogen are derived from the urine of female horses (mares). This type of therapy can be very caustic to your body with such side effects as blood clots, hypothyroidism, psychological manifestations, hormonal shifts with increased production of testosterone, and cancer. The ravaged body of the typical American woman is so nutrient-depleted that it experiences the above-mentioned symptoms, which repeat month after month, year after year until worse conditions occur later due to the neglect of proper nutrients. I have treated women with large ovarian cysts, and with proper protocols they totally resolve these cysts and all the devastating symptoms within three to six months. Breast problems I often treat women with painful breasts and with benign and/or malignant breast tumors. We know that 80% of malignant breast cancer is estrogen-sensitive on histological pathology reports, yet a simple essential mineral can actually shut down these estrogen receptor sites, therefore probably eliminating 80% of estrogen-dominant cancers. If a woman takes a specific vitamin and a mineral combination, 95% of all breast cancers can be eliminated. Why are not these types of documentaries and statistics not shown on television or in the news? Well, maybe because it would cripple the modern American medical industry, which makes money from your sickness, not your wellness. One of the leading causes of death in women today, breast cancer—and the unnecessary mutilation of women and the psychological aftereffects—could be reduced by 95% by just monitoring and taking natural substances.
Thyroid problems One of four women has thyroid disease. The unfortunate situation is that women who suffer with ovarian issues also usually suffer with breast issues, which then leads to thyroid dysfunction. It is a domino effect. Please read my article about thyroid in the February issue of Natural Awakenings. Menopause problems Many menopausal women experience “hot flashes” and mood swings. Let it be known to one and all that in menopause women still produce estrogen and you do not need hormone replacement therapy. Your adrenal glands and liver still produce estrogen after menopause, and hormone replacement therapy is useless. Be it horse urine estrogen or bio-identical hormones, they are not needed and are foreign to your bodies and will have long term consequences! When you get your hormones checked, they should be in the free form, not bound to proteins, as 90% of reproductive hormones are. Never rely on having your reproductive hormones checked through serum samples (blood), since that checks the bound hormones to proteins, which are inactive. These conditions mentioned above affect one out of two women in this country today. All the financial, physical, and emotional suffering of the female gender is absolutely unnecessary, and simple, inexpensive measures can change your life. ot migraines? Ear ringing? Neck pain? If so, why would you go to a dentist for Help? I had a “natural awakening” in Las Vegas in February 2008. After 30 years in dentistry (not including dental school), I headed off for continuing education with my whole dental team to learn what the Las Vegas Institute of Advanced Dental Studies (LVI) could teach us. After three long, emotional days, I realized I would never look at or treat patients the same way I had before. At that time, I decided that our team would invest the next 1½ years learning to implement these techniques into our practice. Since then we have learned and implemented a technique that has unraveled a myriad of symptoms plaguing people’s overall health. Over the years we have seen people being freed from debilitating symptoms by finding their neuromuscular “happy space.” There are dentists all over the world who have implemented this treatment in their practices with the same education—for details, visit LVIGlobal.com. People arrive with an unhappy bite situation and the resulting symptoms often because of previous extractions, wear and tear of their teeth, or other reasons that caused their malocclusion. Everybody is different, so this “bite disorder” can manifest itself in a variety of symptoms that could improve with correction of the bite. I was amazed
www.GoNaturalAwakenings.com
at how many body parts/areas are affected by the muscles that attach the jaw to your head and also surrounding muscles. These problems can include undiagnosed head and neck pain, regular headaches, facial pain, migraines; clenching and/or grinding teeth; posture problems; uncontrollable tongue movements; limited opening; inability to find the correct bite with teeth; clicking or popping jaw joint; ear pain; hissing, buzzing, ringing, or roaring sounds in the ears; diminished hearing; clogged, “stuffy,” itchy ears; balance problems, vertigo, dizziness; throat problems, swallowing difficulties, tightness of throat, sore throat with no infection, voice fluctuations, laryngitis; tongue pain; back pain (upper and lower); arm and finger tingling, weakness, numbness, and/ or pain ... and the list goes on. Often traditional medicine treats these symptoms with medications like narcotics, steroids, or muscle relaxants. I evaluate to see if the bite is the root cause of the problem, sometimes working in conjunction with a chiropractor or massage therapist to get the muscles in balance. Obviously, potential medical causes such as tumors have to be ruled out before treatment can commence. The patient first goes through an initial evaluation that includes a consultation reviewing a checklist of symptoms, measuring the face, evaluation of posture, and clinical
exam of the teeth, head and neck. It Coming Next Month is usually clear at this consultation whether the patient can be helped. The next step is a more through session evaluating the muscles with EMG (Electromyography), CMS (Computerized Mandibular Scanning) and ESG (ElectroSonography) of the joints. At this time the patient is also relaxed with Low Frequency TENS (Transcutaneous Electronic Neural Stimulation). Once the we find “happy space,” we fabricate an orthotic in that position. The patient then has follow-up appointments for fine tuning of the bite. The patient often experiences diminishing symptoms within days, sometimes much faster. The orthotic is worn 24/7. At times the patient finds that wearing it only at night will keep symptoms away. Some wear it “part time” during the day once the symptoms are reduced/ gone. Long-term patients can also opt to have a more permanent solution that will give them their ideal bite without the appliance. The best description I have found of how this trouble evolves from the jaw muscles, and the treatment I have described here, is found in two simple YouTube videos. You can find a link to these on our web page, TheSwedishDentist.com. They were developed by a colleague and Fellow of LVI, Dr. Scott Tamura in California. mericans use 35 million pounds of toxic household cleaning products annually. According to the Children’s Health Environmental Coalition, in Los Angeles, traces of cleaning chemicals can be found throughout the human body within seconds of exposure, posing risks like asthma, allergies, cancer, reproductive toxicity, hormone disruption, neurotoxicity and death. Equally sobering is the decades of research suggesting a relationship between the overuse of powerful disinfectants and the rise of antibiotic-resistant super bacteria like methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), as well as concerns over these toxins entering water supplies and wildlife food chains. Cleaning product labels lack transparency, says Johanna Congleton, Ph.D., a senior scientist for the Environmental Working Group, because “manufacturers aren’t required to specify ingredients.” One approach to assure safe ingredients is do-it-yourself (DIY) products. For Matt and Betsy Jabs, the authors of DIY Natural Household Cleaners who blog at DIYNatural. com, creating homemade cleaners is a rewarding exercise in sustainability

and simplicity. “We’re cutting through all the marketing and getting back to basics,” says Matt. Affordability is another benefit: The Jabs’ homemade laundry detergent costs five cents per load, compared with 21 cents for a store brand. Annie B. Bond, a bestselling author and pioneering editor of the award-winning Green Guide, dispels a DIY myth: “What’s time-consuming isn’t making the cleaners; it’s making the decision to switch and figuring it all out,” she says.
Nine Basics White vinegar effectively cleans, deodorizes, cuts grease and disinfects against bacteria, viruses and mold. Castile soap in liquid or bar form serves as a biodegradable, vegetablebased surfactant and all-around cleaner (avoid mixing with vinegar, which neutralizes its cleansing properties). Baking soda cleans, whitens, neutralizes odors and softens water. It’s an excellent scrubbing agent for bathrooms, refrigerators and ovens. Hydrogen peroxide is considered an effective disinfectant and bleach alternative by the Environmental Protection Agency. Use it to whiten grout and remove stains. Essential oils derived from plants infuse cleaners with fragrance and boost germ-fighting power. Tea tree, eucalyptus and lavender oils all boast antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal properties. The Jabs advise that although they can be pricy, “The investment will pay for itself many times over.” Lemon juice or citric acid cuts through grease, removes mold and bacteria, and leaves dishes streak-free. Coarse kosher salt helps soften dishwasher water and acts as a scouring agent.

Culinary Mushroom Magic Delicate Powerhouses of Nutrition and Medicine by Case Adams
M
ushrooms have played a remarkable role in human history. Egyptian hieroglyphics dating back 4,500 years linked mushrooms to immortality. The famous 5,300-year-old “iceman” found frozen in 1991 in the Tyrolean Alps carried a sachet containing the mushroom species Piptoporus betulinus—the birch polypore. Greek writings of Hippocrates, Pliny, Dioscorides, Galen and others regarded the mushroom Fomitopsis officinalis (agarikon) as a panacea. While enthusiasm later waned in Europe, with John Farley characterizing mushrooms in his 1784 book, The London Art of Cookery, as “treacherous gratifications,” Native American Indians used varieties of mushrooms for rheumatism, congested organs and other diseased conditions. Yet, modern-day culinary connoisseurs owe the recent surge in interest in fungal delicacies more to Japanese and Chinese
18
traditions, which have consistently advanced mushrooms’ nutritional and medicinal uses. Ancient Chinese medical texts, including the Hanshu (82 CE) even refer to the famed reishi mushroom (Ganoderma lucidum) as the “mushroom of immortality.” Today, fungi cuisine in the West is typically limited to Agaracus bisporus—the relatively mild button mushroom, which matures into the acclaimed portobello. But digging deeper into available options reveals chanterelle (Cantharellus), oyster (Pleurotus ostreatus), morel (Morchella) and shiitake (Lentinula edodes) species. These culinary mushrooms provide a virtuosity of delicate flavors harboring nutritional and medicinal benefits, according to those who study them. University of California-Berkeley research scientist and Mycologist Christopher Hobbs, Ph.D., explains that shiitake and oyster mushrooms follow the button as the most widely culti-
vated around the world. “They come in many colors, varieties and species and are typically the most easily digested and utilized of all mushrooms,” he notes. “Mushrooms are an amazing health food. Most edible fungi are high in fiber, good-quality protein, key vitamins, micronutrients, phosphorous and potassium, and low in fat and calories. It’s one of nature’s perfect diet foods.” As protein powerhouses, portobello and other button mushrooms, shiitake and oyster varieties all deliver between 30 and 35 percent protein by weight. The fiber content can range from 20 grams per 100 grams (about 3.5 ounces) in the case of portobello to a lofty 48 grams per 100 grams in the Phoenix oyster mushroom. Mushrooms also supply potent B vitamins. One hundred grams (about 3.5 ounces) of portobello contains more than four milligrams (mg) of riboflavin (B2), 69 mg niacin (B3) and 12 mg pantothenic acid (B5). Shiitake’s comparable numbers are three, 106 and 17, while pink oyster delivers 2.45, 66 and 33 mg of the three nutrients. Thus, they deliver significantly more than recommended daily allowances (RDA)—for example, niacin’s adult RDA ranges from 14 to 16 mg and riboflavin’s is just 1.1 to 1.3 mg. Mushrooms also present one of the few food sources of vitamin D— primarily D2—but some also contain small amounts of vitamin D3, according to U.S. Department of Agriculture research. Also, their D2 levels spike dramatically when sun-dried sporeside-up, confirmed in research by internationally recognized mycologist Paul Stamets. Mushrooms contain important minerals, too. Portobello contains 4,500 mg, oyster 4,500 mg and shiitake 2,700 mg of potassium per 100 grams, all with low sodium levels. Plus, they deliver usable amounts of copper, zinc and selenium. Beyond the nutrient numbers lies mushrooms’ bonus round: They contain special complex polysaccharides—long-chain molecules within cell walls—that have been the subject
Printed on recycled paper to protect the environment
of intense research at leading institutions around the world, including Harvard, Yale and the University of California. Mushrooms’ (1-3)-betaglucan complexes have been shown to inhibit many cancers and suggest potential solutions for diabetes, heart disease and immune-related conditions. Stamets explains that mushrooms also contain sterols, shown to benefit cardiovascular health. “Shiitake and other mushrooms like reishi have cholesterol-normalizing effects,” adds Hobbs. Can we take these benefits back to the kitchen? “Most mushrooms have to be cooked to release their healthgiving benefits,” explains Hobbs. Stamets concurs: “Cooking liberates mushroom nutrients from their matrix of cells. They are tenderized upon heating, making their nutrients bioavailable for digestion.” Thankfully, finding these tasty superfood delicacies has become easier as entrepreneurial fresh-mushroom growers have emerged throughout the United States in recent years. Scarred for Life
I
had the delightful experience recently of appearing in the charming musical comedy Do Black Patent Leather Shoes Really Reflect Up?, which is about a group of kids (played by adults) growing up in Catholic school in the 1950s and ‘60s There is a wonderful scene in which poor awkward, nerdy Louie can’t muster the nerve to ask his crush to dance at the freshman mixer. Louie cannot get out the words, “Do you want to dance?”, but can only stammer, “Do, uh... do, uh...”—until it turns into a dream sequence and launches into the rousing doo-wop number “Doo-Wah, Doo-Wee.” In Louie’s daydream, he is, of course, the star. And, being the late 1950s, the star is, of course, a suave Elvis-like figure. As soon as Louie dons a golden sport coat and a pair of dark sunglasses, takes center stage, grabs the mic stand, and begins to croon, all the girls go insane. They scream like hysterical groupies and launch themselves at him, ending up in an adoring semicircle at his feet to sing backup harmonies and scream some more and just basically carry on throughout the song as if their faculties have left them. When we were blocking the number, the director, a dear friend, had a musing look on his face. I know that look. Interesting requests follow that look. Then he asked me if I could possibly take a running leap and
20
slide into home, so to speak, skidding across the stage on one knee and landing at Louie’s feet. “Of course,” I said. That is the only proper answer. It will be funny as all get-out, so: Of course. I have another director-friend who once said, with great pride, “She’ll do anything for a laugh.” That is basically true. (On stage, at least.) If it’s funny and pretty much guaranteed to get a laugh out of an audience, I’ll die trying. The slide was a great success, and great fun. Once we got our costumes, it was even easier with a layer of poodle skirt and crinoline for padding. Every night it got a laugh, and every night I managed to skid a little farther across the stage, until some of the crew thought I might go flying right into the wings. Until the last Saturday. I do not know what happened, but either I slid differently, or my skirt flew up, or I landed on the scratchy part of the crinoline. Something changed. I did not feel it at the time, because when you are onstage, your adrenaline takes over. But when I got back to my dressing room and was hurrying to change costumes for my next song, I took off my skirt and looked down— and saw a giant hole ripped in my pantyhose and a huge, copiously bleeding scrape across my knee. I shrieked. The other girls
rushed over to see. And then I said, “Awesome! I’ll have a scar!” I wasn’t being facetious. We theatre people love our battle scars. We relish a war wound. We take great pride in injuries sustained in the spotlight. Nothing pleases us more than to tell our thespian war stories at cast parties, or really on the street to anyone who will listen... or, ahem, in a magazine column. It’s like when you’re a kid and you get hurt on the playground. Once your parents put a Band-Aid on the scrape and you stop sniffling about it, you’re actually kind of intrigued with your damage, secretly proud of yourself for playing all-out to this degree, and halfway hoping you’ll end up with a scar (ideally in an interesting shape, like a lightning bolt) that you can point to and tell a dramatic story about. Theatre people are pretty much kids at heart. Why else would adults play-act and dress up in costumes like it’s Halloween all year ‘round? This was especially proved true by the gusto with which eight grown people spent this winter behaving like children (and for once, were encouraged to do so) in Patent Leather Shoes. We proudly compared our bumps and bruises from cavorting on (and falling out of) school desks and jungle gyms. We documented them with glee on Facebook and Instagram. And when I skinned my knee up good sliding into home, did I hold back the next day for the final performance? Not on your life. I slid farther across that stage than ever before. The credo of the theatre person is, go big or go home... even if you have to slide into it bleeding. I do have a scar from the epic slide, and I couldn’t be more pleased. It’s another tale to tell, another landmark on the map of my life. Sometimes scars are good. Scars are stories. And with enough time, and theatre, the body becomes an autobiography. Reverse Aging: Informational Medicine by Paula Koger, BSN, MA, DOM
I
like the idea of living a long time and not being limited by the deterioration processes associated with, and commonly believed as essential and inseparable from, the aging process. We want to feel, look, and be our best, right? We have all heard of anti-aging— but reverse aging? As a practitioner and a recipient of “informational medicine” myself, I want to share my observations: I am seeing signs of age reversal and increased tissue integrity and health. One of the obvious signs is the return of original hair color. Before using informational medicine, I used henna to color my gray hair. Now the hair that is growing in is light brownblonde. Recipients’ faces are looking brighter and tighter. Bones and joints move more easily and are getting stronger. Wrinkles are minimized in a subtle way. Exercise is increased, and people are losing weight without starving. Issues and traumas leave— and scars are reduced in thickness and tightness. Although I will not ask for tissue biopsies to prove my case, these are good indicators that my cells are getting younger. What is informational medicine? As cell biologist Franklin M. Howard says, “Each cell is an intricate and sophisticated chemical factory.” He says, “Even in the simplest cell, this calls for collaborative actions of thousands of molecules.” Informational medicine is programmed to provide the essential data necessary for these complex functions to be restored when they become disrupted.
www.GoNaturalAwakenings.com
One of the things that contribute greatly to our aging is the choices we make in food, makeup, chemicals, preservatives, dental fillings, and exposures to heavy metals and other cell-polluting or aging substances. It is the burdens of the body, both chemical and emotional, that cause the cells to become overloaded and burdened. These things cause distortions in the energy field. I have noticed that when the cells receive information to restore their vitality, a beautiful glow appears. Dr. Peter Fraser and Harry Massey, researchers who developed informational medicine, give us more insight into why this is possible in the book, Decoding the Human BodyField. They describe the body as an energy field or a computer that stores data. The more stored data, the slower the “computer” runs. For a computer, you either buy more gigabits, or delete information. Similarly, for the body, you can give it new information to reorganize, release the toxins, and correct the distorted information. When we give the body information medicine, such as the NES infraceuticals, we are educating the body and restoring the lost data. We are restoring gigabits and deleting harmful information that has been acquired from our lifestyle, stresses, toxins and traumas. Furthermore, we are giving the body the information needed to organize itself. I gave a longstanding Chronic Fatigue client the “stomach” information remedy and recovery began immediately. We can function better and look better as we maintain and correct the depleted
and deleted information that runs our cellular factories. NES, or the information medicine, does not focus on the standard physics model of transfer of energy but at the holographic information that rides on top of the physical energetic waves, be they electromagnetic or otherwise. The remedies created by Peter Frasier address the arrangement of the information. Given reorganization information, the body can take over and heal itself starting at the subatomic level. He says to get a structure in space you have to get repeated arrangement of data until the body reads it, because all information exchange takes place via the interaction of energized electrons. It is not enough to run energy into the body. It is essential to restore the lost or distorted information. Peter Frasier and Harry Massey also create computerized software called NES with a database programmed with the ability to measure the presence or absence of the information using biofeedback and suggest remedies to restore the data. I had a longstanding insomnia case that didn’t respond to anything until the scan showed an information disturbance: brainwave distortion secondary to toxins and infection. She was given an infraceutical based on the scan results. She sleeps now. Her scan pattern revealed the need for information in these areas of the body and the program selected the remedy for her. The results of the restoration of the body’s energy field is progressively younger, more vital cells. This therapy works well with electron gem therapy and acupuncture. Qigong Steps Up Vitality and Serenity
by Meredith Montgomery
A proven practice for supporting health and self-healing, qigong has been used in China for millennia to maintain and improve physical, mental and emotional well-being.
“Q
i” (pronounced chee) refers to the life force or vital energy present in all things throughout the universe while “gong” means dedicated effort or steady practice of a skill. Qigong is the art of working intensely with this energy, cultivating life force. Acupuncture physician and qigong instructor Walter Hayley, in Bonita Springs, Florida, became passionate about qigong while working as a stockbroker in need of stress relief. He compares qigong’s movement of energy in the body to water running through a hose: “Qi is concentrated in channels throughout the body. Think of the qi as water and those channels as a garden hose branching out to every aspect of the individual. Stress, whether physical or emotional, can kink the hose. Qigong helps get the kinks out,” he explains. “It relaxes the body, letting energy flow more efficiently, allowing the body to heal itself.” Qigong styles vary, but Hayley re-

marks that most involve slow movement, focused awareness, and special breathing techniques. Many describe the practice as a moving meditation. Qigong teacher Judith Forsyth, in Mobile, Alabama, says, “It’s often described as the mother of tai chi. When the quiet, internal energy art of qigong mixed with the powerful external martial arts, it developed into tai chi.” She emphasizes that the focus of qigong is less on its physical mechanics and more on understanding how the vital force moves through the body and can be used to enhance health and longevity. Inside the body, there’s an integrated network of subtle energy centers that international Qigong Master Robert Peng believes are connected to the capacity for genuine happiness. The goal is to awaken and pack these centers with qi. “By repeating slow, gentle movements over and over, you can develop the body’s capacity to
draw qi from the universe. It can be stored in these centers and later channeled back through the body to empower your daily activities,” explains Peng, author of The Master Key: The Qigong Secret for Vitality, Love, and Wisdom. He focuses on three of the body’s big energy portals: the “third eye,” located between the eyebrows; the “heart center,” at the center of the chest on the sternum, and the “sea of qi,” just below the navel. The idea is that when energy is accessed in these three centers, specific spiritual qualities are accessed: wisdom, love, and vitality (respectively). Harmonizing all three is ideal. Peng advises that when these essential elements are woven together in balance, dynamic happiness is possible. “You begin to project more wisdom, love, vitality, inspiration and peacefulness. Conversations flow more smoothly. Your life becomes more productive, meaningful and serene,” he says. “Whatever the challenges encountered, you’ll be better equipped to deal with them, while remaining inwardly contented.” Forsyth was first guided to qigong when the prescribed rest, drugs, exercise, and physical therapy following an accident left her with lingering neck and back problems. She recalls, “After eight weeks of practice, I experienced significant physical improvement, not only where I had considerable pain, but in my overall energy level, ability to sleep and the condition of my skin and hair. The peace and harmonizing meditation benefits of qigong were
Printed on recycled paper to protect the environment
also affecting me positively in other ways. I became less worried, less of a perfectionist, less stressed out and began to experience more joyfulness.” While all styles benefit overall health, specific qigong exercises may be prescribed for specialized needs, from athletic conditioning to management of chronic conditions such as arthritis, hypertension or cancer. The gentle movements can be performed by almost anyone at any age and ability level, even those confined to a chair or bed. “Qigong speaks to the body, and the body then addresses the condition,” Hayley remarks. The experts advise that qigong is best practiced every day, even if for just five minutes. “A group class offers a synergy that a home practice lacks, but the more important practice is at home,” observes Hayley. Some personal instruction is ideal so the practitioner receives feedback, but books and videos make qigong accessible to everyone, everywhere. Hayley reminds newbies, “Just be patient. If one form doesn’t suit you, remember there are thousands of different forms to try.” Peng’s advice to beginners is, “Be happy! Think of the exercise as lighthearted play and remember to smile as you move.” Meredith Montgomery is the publisher of Natural Awakenings Mobile/Baldwin, AL (HealthyLivingHealthyPlanet. com).

The Elusive Tomato by David Y. Goodman
I
f there’s a Holy Grail of vegetable gardening, it has to be the tomato. Armies of fervent gardeners fight to grow this succulent fruit. Seed catalogs devote multiple pages to exotic varieties ranging from black-fleshed beefsteaks to tart yellow Romas. Home improvement stores roll out racks of rich green young seedlings in perfect six-packs. Yet, tomatoes are not for me. Here I am: a garden teacher, writer, genius. And a failure at tomatoes. From the fringe of outer darkness I stare inwards, picturing happy gardeners fondling supple fruits hanging in golden sunshine; lush tomatoes, untouched by stinkbugs; plump and sweet without a hint of blossom end rot. The temptation to try again is overwhelming. But, the pain… oh, the pain. I know. This is supposed to be a column where I teach you about gardening, not a column where I weep over my shortcomings and drag you down into plant purgatory. Ave Solanum, Solanum lycopersicum. It wasn’t always like this. There was a year where tomatoes grew well for me. Unfortunately, I was in Tennessee at the time. Tomatoes loved the rich clay and deep mulch of my beds (though they still rejected much of my trellising efforts, preferring to twine about on the ground like overzealous revelers ejected from a Bacchanal) and rewarded me for my efforts by producing enough fruit for

us to eat fresh and even jar up some homemade tomato sauce on the side. Yet in Florida… although, come to think of it, I do know one person who grows good tomatoes here in Florida: my Master Gardener friend Jo. I wonder how she manages? You know what? I think I’ll stop griping and give her a ring. JO: Hello? DAVID: Hi Jo. It’s David. I’m writing an article on how I can’t grow tomatoes here and I’m whining about how it’s impossible. Then I realized that you do it every year. So, I need to know, how DO you grow tomatoes? JO: First, I grow varieties that are suited to the climate. Better Boy, Early Girl, Roma and Amish Paste do well. DAVID: How do you start them? JO: In January, I start them from seed in the greenhouse, then transplant them to the garden on Feb 14. When I transplant, I always bury half the little tomato plant’s stem in the soil so it builds extra roots. Then I put a ring of paper around the base of each plant to protect them from cutworms. Just use brown paper grocery bags. If it’s going to freeze, I protect them with cloches. I just use milk jugs with the bottoms cut off. DAVID: I’m convinced that seed-grown plants are tougher than transplants you get from the store. It makes sense to get them started early, too, and have them adapt to your garden. What do you do about feeding them?
JO: I use composted cow manure, mushroom compost, bone meal, blood meal, eggshells, and ashes for potassium. After things warm up a bit and I don’t need the cloches, I put cages around each plant and mulch with four to six inches of straw. DAVID: I think my problem is that I’m starting too late. JO: Yes, you need to start early and get as much harvest in as possible before the bugs arrive. DAVID: Anything else I should know? JO: Well, people often ask when I give talks, “So, I have these tomato plants that look great but they aren’t blooming or setting fruit, why is that?” Usually, it’s because they’re getting too much nitrogen and not enough phosphorus and potassium. High nitrogen isn’t a good idea. If you don’t go organic, you gotta watch that first number if you’re using chemical fertilizer. DAVID: Another thing I’ve noticed: tomatoes in part shade won’t fruit. JO: That’s right. Full sun means six or more hours. If they don’t get that, then no tomatoes! DAVID: Thanks, Jo. Now I can at least share a little hope with my readers. JO: Any time! So there you have it. It IS, apparently, possible to grow tomatoes here; it just takes planning and some good work. It also doesn’t hurt to have at least two green thumbs, like Jo. Of course, it’s probably too late for me to try tomatoes this year. File it away for next January. Guess I just need to give up and plant zucchini. Now there’s an easy crop. Too bad it’s disgusting. QIGONG TEACHINGS ON FITNESS AND FOOD
Q
igong is the art of harnessing qi (life force or vital energy) which directly affects blood flow. It is an exercise that makes your blood pulse. This pulsing occurs by moving qi, using specific breathing techniques along with postures and slow, graceful movements. Qigong also encompasses the use of healing foods, herbs, acupressure, and yogic stretches, all of which energize the body, increase vitality, and accelerate metabolism. Qigong is circulation; the term “blood flow” is synonymous to “moving Qi.” Studies confirm practicing Qigong reduces drug withdrawal in heroin addicts by 50 percent. Several Qigong instructors we’ve certified are teaching with huge success at Florida drug rehab clinics. Studies also reveal that Qigong boosts the immune system and is beneficial for those fighting cancer. Dr. Oz was quoted as saying that if you want to live to be 100, do Qigong. These techniques originated more than 3000 years ago with mountain wanderers, people who were activated by qi. Most acupuncturists are strong believers in Qigong, and some prescribe exercises to their patients for use in between treatments. Qigong is different from yoga primarily because it requires slower, more gracious movements to harness your electromagnetic field. Some Qigong exercises build muscle or speed, but most are a pulsation of qi through the body. Qigong is the “sensation of energy” and is highly tangible. A few advanced systems of yoga, like
www.GoNaturalAwakenings.com
Kriya Yoga, have striking similarities to Qigong. However, compared to most systems of yoga, Qigong has a much greater emphasis on precise breathing techniques. Qigong deals with smaller movements of the abdomen to circulate qi, and more precise movements of the hands, rooting into the earth and opening up pathways of energy. Yoga works with energy, but to a lesser degree, and although we practice and love yoga, Qigong does what yoga cannot. We train thousands of yoga teachers, and they are always blown away by the tangibility of qi experienced. Within 10 minutes of qi breathing, many feel electricity in their hands. “The Buzz,” as it is called in the Qigong family, is a reaction caused by increased levels of oxygen, which I believe accelerates the vibration of our mitochondria. Many describe the inner buzzing or vibrational feeling as a natural high, and it has the obvious effect of stimulating endorphins. Many people describe “perma-grin” where the gratitude is so overwhelming and the joy so potent that they can’t stop smiling for a short time. One Qigong student taking Xanax to stay functional reported that after the Breath Empowerment he was more relaxed than any time in his life. This man later used his God-given breath and willpower to wean off Xanax and return to his natural state. Qigong is best in the morning as a practice to extend life and beauty. Even when time is short, I recommend cleansing your body with oxygen and energy first thing in the morning. My
practice is to wake up, brush my teeth and hair, drink some hot tea outside, and do the 9-Breath Method five times, absorbing/retaining large amounts of oxygen in my bloodstream. Gentle power breathing awakens the cellular vibration and stimulates metabolism. This is a quick and powerful method which we spend hours thoroughly teaching at the Qi Revolution Conference. Qigong uses food, herbs and mushrooms to reverse many types of illness. A big part of what we teach is how “specific foods reverse specific diseases.” Many foods like kiwi have helped hundreds of our Qigong students reverse asthma. Our food protocols laid out in the book Conquering Any Disease have been tested with thousands of people nationwide. I have seen dozens of people with cancer reverse it within a few months following strict dietary and Qigong practice guidelines. Adding the avocado seed to a delicious fruit and vegetable smoothie is a great way to maximize your phytochemical intake along with blending the seeds and skins of the apple. Sunlight, breathing techniques, and high vibration foods are God’s natural medicine. Jeff Primack has studied with many Qigong masters around the world and has trained 50,000 people in live Qigong seminars since 2003.
