healthbriefs Acupuncture Increases Quality of Life for Allergy esearch Sufferers from Berlin’s Charité University
R
Medical Center suggests that acupuncture is an effective treatment for patients with seasonal allergic rhinitis. Published in the Annals of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, in 2013, the study analyzed data on the costs and quality of life of 364 allergy patients who had been randomly assigned to receive one of three treatments: rescue medication alone (taken when symptoms are greatest); acupuncture treatment plus rescue medication; or sham (non-therapeutic) acupuncture plus rescue medication. Patients receiving acupuncture incurred higher total treatment costs, but also gained significantly more quality of life compared with the rescue medication-only groups.
Strawberries Reduce Blood Pressure study published in the World Journal of Diabe-
A
tes concluded that the regular consumption of a flavonoid-rich strawberry beverage reduces blood pressure in people with Type 2 diabetes. The study divided 36 subjects, all with moderately high blood pressure and Type 2 diabetes, into two groups—the first drank the equivalent of one serving of fresh strawberries per day made from freeze-dried berries, and the other group drank the same amount of an imitation strawberry-flavored drink during a six-week period. Blood pressure was tested at the beginning and end of the study for all participants. At the end, the group drinking the real strawberry beverage registered significantly lower diastolic blood pressure than at the outset; it was also lower than the imitation strawberry group. The average diastolic blood pressure of the group drinking real strawberries went down by 6.5 percent and the systolic dropped by 12 percent. The strawberry-flavored group’s systolic blood pressure was also reduced, but only by 3.7 percent.
The Color Green Makes Exercise Feel Easier esearch from the University of Essex, in England, sug-
R
gests that viewing natural green images while exercising may be better than being exposed to other colors. The researchers tested 14 people doing moderate-intensity cycling while watching video footage of predominantly gray, red or green imagery. Each of the participants underwent three cycling tests—one with each of the videos— along with a battery of physiological and mood testing. The researchers found that when the subjects watched the green-colored video, they had better moods, with a lower relative perception of exertion than when they exercised while watching the red and grey videos. They also found those who exercised while watching the red video experienced greater feelings of anger during their exercise. www.GoNaturalAwakenings.com
Memory Works Better Reading Real Books esearchers from Norway’s Stavanger
R
University and France’s Aix-Marseille Université found that readers remember a story better if it’s on paper. The study tested 50 people who read the same 28-page short story. Half of the group read the paper version and the other half read the story on a Kindle e-reader. The researchers discovered that readers of the digital version could not remember details from the story or reconstruct the plot as well as the group of people who read the paper copy. The researchers found that the feedback of a Kindle doesn’t provide the same support for mental reconstruction of a story as a print pocket book does. “When you read on paper, you can sense with your fingers a pile of pages on the left growing, and shrinking on the right,” explains Stavanger University’s Anne Mangen, Ph.D. These findings confirm a study performed a year earlier, also led by Mangen. Seventy-two 10th-graders were given text to read either on paper or on a computer screen. The students who read the paper text versions scored significantly higher in reading comprehension testing than those reading digital versions.

globalbriefs European Eco-Cooperation Linking Oceans and Human Health
E
urOcean 2014, convened by the Italian Presidency of the Council of the European Union, the European Marine Board, the European Commission and three Italian partner institutions—the National Research Council, National Inter-university Consortium for Ocean Science and the National Institute of Oceanography and Experimental Geophysics—has issued the first of 18 priorities cited in a declaration that adds momentum to a European Marine Board report, Linking Oceans and Human Health (Tinyurl.com/OceansAndHealth). Participants identified four high-level policy goals: valuing the ocean; capitalizing on European leadership; advancing ocean knowledge; and breaking scientific barriers. Newly discovered toxic nanoparticles and swelling micro-plastic marine pollution, with concerns emerging about higher seawater temperatures incubating chemical carcinogens, pose several new perils to human health. Jan Mees, chair of the European Marine Board, states, “To truly progress our knowledge, European scientists across a broad range of disciplines and domains must make a quantum leap towards holistic approaches and integrated research on a scale that will help us to much better understand, protect, manage and sustainably exploit the seas and oceans that surround us. This is a grand challenge; not just in Europe, but for human society as a whole.” Source: Eurocean2014.eu
Cash Mobs
Collective On-the-Spot Buying Revives Local Businesses
I
n most areas of the country, small, locally owned retail businesses are the lifeblood of local economies, but the rising costs of doing business often means they cannot compete with the lower prices of big-box retail giants that negotiate in volume. For several years, the growth and frequency of cash mobs have been breathing new life into struggling mom-and-pop businesses. Like a flash mob performing a dance or social protest, a cash mob gathers people together to have a tremendously positive effect on hometown businesses that may have served them and their families for decades. Most cash mobs agree to meet on a particular day, with each participant committing to spend a specified amount, typically $20 or more. The benefits for local businesses far exceed a one-day influx of cash—new customers are found, previous customers become active ones again and a new appreciation for businesses that fuel a local economy is realized. Participants can also have a little fun while further benefiting their communities as many cash mobs gather with old friends and new after a shopping frenzy at a local establishment for food and drinks. Bye-Bye Birdie
230 Avian Species on the National Watch List
S
cientists from 23 organizations, including the federal government, universities and conservation groups, have spent years on the State of the Birds Study, looking at 230 species of birds from different habitats and compiling its watch list. Peter Marra, a migratory bird specialist at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Zoo, in Washington, D.C., attributes the population drops of the birds in the most trouble to disappearing habitat or reduced range. Some coastal birds are doing better, and previously endangered wetland birds are recovering due to laws that are protecting them. Marra says, “These populations come back when we create the habitat. The report emphasizes that it’s better to focus on birds that aren’t yet in decline and keep them that way.” Ken Rosenberg, a bird biologist at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, in Ithaca, New York, and an author of the report, says that hunters, as well as conservationists, deserve credit for preserving ducks. He acknowledges, “We’ve put a tremendous amount of resources and money into wetland and waterfowl conservation because of the hunters who contribute financially.” But lots of songbirds are in trouble, and Florida, where bird habitat is disappearing fast, is a crucial stopover for migrating birds. It’s the kind of place that birds both common and endangered urgently need to survive. Source: National Public Radio

Nature’s Wisdom Its Lessons Inspire, Heal and Sustain Us by Christine MacDonald
The environment is not separate from ourselves; we are inside it and it is inside us; we make it and it makes us. ~ Davi Kopenawa Yanomami, Amazon shaman
W
hile the idea that we humans stand apart from—or even above—nature is a prevailing theme in much of modern civilization, naturalists and other clever souls throughout the ages have observed that the opposite is true: We are part of, depend on and evolve with nature—and we ignore this vital connection at our peril. “If one way is better than another, that you may be sure is nature’s way,” admonished the Greek philosopher Aristotle, in the third century B.C.E. “Time destroys the speculation of men, but it confirms the judgment of nature,” Roman politician and philosopher Cicero ruminated two centuries later. Nobel Prize-winning physicist and philosopher Albert Einstein remarked, “Look deep into nature, and then you will understand everything better.” Today, more of us are looking to nature for ways to improve physical,
12
mental and emotional health, develop intelligence, innovate, overhaul how we build homes and neighborhoods, and raise our children.
Healthful Nature
As Henry David Thoreau wrote in his classic 1854 book Walden, “We need the tonic of wildness.” While we know firsthand how walking in the woods can elevate mood, scientists have documented that a regular dose of nature has other far-reaching benefits. It can lower stress hormone levels, blood pressure and undesirable cholesterol; help heal neurological problems; hasten fuller recovery from surgery and heart attacks; increase cancer-fighting white blood cells; and generally aid overall health (Health Promotion International research report; also Nippon Medical School study, Tokyo). Regular playtime outdoors helps
children cope with hyperactivity and attention deficit disorders, according to research published in Current Problems in Pediatric and Adolescent Health Care. Exposure to nature can help adults escape from today’s wired lives; reinvigorate, be fitter and less likely to suffer from obesity, diabetes and heart disease, as reported in studies published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition and a University of Washington research summary. It can also unlock understanding of the spiritual essence of life. Hours regularly spent by youth outdoors stimulate imagination and creativity and enhance cognitive development, helping them learn. Nature also helps youngsters develop social awareness, helping them better navigate human relations (Tinyurl.com/ OutdoorHealthBenefits Research). “It’s strange and kind of sad that we are so removed from nature that we actually have to ask why nature is good for us,” says Dr. Eva Selhub, a lecturer at Harvard Medical School, author of the new book Your Health Destiny, and co-author of Your Brain on Nature. “The fact is our brains and bodies are wired in concert with nature.” Recognition of nature’s positive effects has grown so much in recent years that physicians increasingly write their patients “prescriptions” to go hiking in the woods, counting on the healthy exercise and exposure to sunlight, nature and soothing views to address health problems stemming from poor diets and sedentary lifestyles. Healthcare clinics and hospitals in Washington, D.C., New York City, Chicago, Indianapolis, Albuquerque, New Mexico, California’s Bay Area and elsewhere have launched Prescription Trails programs aimed at objectives from preventing obesity in children to healthful activities for retirees (Tinyurl. com/AmericanHealthTrails). Bestselling author Richard Louv calls the positive nature effect “vitamin N” in The Nature Principle. He contends: “Many of us, without having a
name for it, are using the nature tonic. We are, in essence, self-medicating with an inexpensive and unusually convenient drug substitute.” Such ideas are commonly accepted in many cultures. The Japanese believe in the restorative power of shinrin-yoku, which could be translated as “forest medicine” or “forest bathing”. Indigenous peoples like the Brazilian tribe led by Shaman Davi Kopenawa Yanomami, fighting to preserve their land and way of life in the Amazon, profess to be at one with the innate riches of sustainable rainforests (SurvivalInternational.org/parks).
Innovative Nature
Scientists, inventors and other innovators are increasingly inspired by nature. Biomimicry, part social movement and part burgeoning industry, looks to how Earth’s natural systems work and solve problems. University of Utah researchers, inspired by the durable homes built by sandcastle worms, are creating a synthetic glue that one day could help repair fractured bones. Architectural components manufacturer Panelite makes energy-efficient insulated glass by mimicking the hexagonal structure that bees use in honeycombs. (Find other precedents at Tinyurl.com/ BiomimicryCaseExamples). The inspiration for biomimicry comes from many places, says Dayna Baumeister, Ph.D. co-founder of Biomimicry 3.8, a Missoula, Montana, company working with other companies and universities to propel biomimicry into the mainstream. “People are recognizing that they’ve been disconnected to the natural world,” she says. “We also realize that [as a species] we are in trouble. We don’t have all the answers, but we can look to other species for inspiration” for clearing pollutants from our bodies and environments. Plants and fungi are now commonly used to clean up old industrial sites that resemble nature’s way of removing pollutants from water and soil. A University of California, Berkeley, meta-study confirms that farmers currently using organic farming methods and solar power achieve roughly the www.GoNaturalAwakenings.com
Scientific studies show that a regular dose of nature has far-reaching health benefits. More doctors now write “nature” prescriptions for their patients. same crop yields as conventional techniques with far less dependence on fossil fuels, reducing greenhouse gases and petrochemical pesticide and fertilizer pollution.
Cyclical Nature
These breakthrough technologies emulate the way nature uses the building blocks of life in an endless cycle of birth, reproduction, decay and rebirth. It’s part of a broad rethinking of the principles behind sustainability—building, manufacturing and living in greater harmony with natural systems, perhaps eventually eliminating landfills, air and water pollution, and toxic site cleanups. “A toxin is a material in the wrong place,” says architect William McDonough, of Charlottesville, Virginia. The only individual recipient of the Presidential Award for Sustainable Development, he is co-author of Cradle-to-Cradle, a groundbreaking book that calls for re-envisioning even the nastiest waste, and The Upcycle: Beyond Sustainability—Designing for Abundance. McDonough imagines a world where waste becomes raw material for new buildings, furniture and other goods—akin to how a forest reuses every deceased tree and animal to nourish the ecosystem and spawn new life. With 80 percent of U.S. residents currently living in urban areas, architects, builders and municipal planners are likewise pivoting toward nature, prompted by the scientific evidence of the many ways that human health and general well-being rely upon it. While this contact is preferably the kind of “stopping by woods” that inspired New England poet Robert Frost, even a
walk in a city park will work. “Urban nature, when provided as parks and walkways and incorporated into building design, provides calming and inspiring environments and encourages learning, inquisitiveness and alertness,” reports the University of Washington’s College of the Environment, in Green Cities: Good Health. The American Planning Association stresses the importance of integrating green space into urban neighborhoods. Not only does socalled “metro nature” improve air and water quality and reduce urban heat island effects, urban wilds such as Pittsburgh’s Nine Mile Run and Charlotte, North Carolina’s Little Sugar Creek Greenway also restore natural connections in densely populated city centers.
Natural Intelligence
A growing number of scientists say that research about our place in nature has sparked fresh thinking about our role and devastated quaint notions about our species’ superiority. “Single-celled slime molds solve mazes. Brainless plants make correct decisions and bees with brains the size of pinheads handle abstract concepts,” points out Anthropologist Jeremy Narby, author of the groundbreaking book Intelligence in Nature. At a national conference of Bioneers, an organization based in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and San Francisco that gathers nature-minded social and scientific innovators, Narby said: “We are nearly identical to many animals. Many behaviors once thought to be exclusively human are shared by other species. The zone of the specifically human, as determined by science, has been shrinking.” We haven’t lost the ability to tap that primal animal inside, even if most of us are more likely to “venture into the forest” by watching a movie or playing video games. We may feel cut off from our instincts, but studies show time in the woods can do wonders to restore the keenness of our senses to connect with the subtle changes in natural habitat, the movements of other species and the changing seasons.

Nature has an unbelievable capacity for healing. ~David Miller, 10 Lessons from Nature to Inspire Our Everyday Lives The rise of human civilizations may have taken “survival of the fittest” in new directions, often decidedly tamer ones, but experts ranging from scientific researchers to lifestyle analysts say humankind is still hardwired by our more primitive past. Despite the ingenious ways we’ve devised to exploit other life forms, capitalize on Earth’s resources and protect ourselves from nature’s sometimes terrifying power, our fate remains linked to natural laws and limits, from nurturing our body’s immune system to resolving planet-sized problems like climate change. “‘Nature’ is our natural environment,” according to Selhub. We don’t have to move to the country to reconnect, she says. “Even spending 20 minutes a day outside has an effect.” Houseplants, nature photos and aro-
matherapy Earth scents can also help indoor environments better reflect our own nature. The wealth of research and common sense wisdom is aptly summed up by celebrated author Wendell Berry in The Long-Legged House. “We have lived our lives by the assumption that what was good for us would be good for the world. We have been wrong. We must change our lives so that it’ll be possible to live by the contrary assumption, that what is good for the world will be good for us. And that requires we make the effort to know the world and learn what is good for it.” Christine MacDonald is a freelance journalist in Washington, D.C., whose specialties include health and science. Tired of Feeling Tired, Depressed and Unable to Concentrate?
by Dr. Michael J. Badanek, DC, BS, CNS, DACBN, DCBCN, MSGR/CHEV
N
ow in my thirty-fifth year of active clinical practice, I am seeing symptoms of fatigue, constipation, depression, insomnia, memory loss, mood swings and hormonal disorders in alarmingly large numbers of my patients. We Americans are spending billions if not trillions of dollars annually for health insurance, health care, and personal expenditures for good health— and where are we as a nation compared to the health status of the rest of the world? The USA is the best in emergency health care, and no other nation on this planet can complete with that. This is, however only 10% of the total health care picture. The World Health Organization (WHO) rates the USA as number 38 in overall health, yet we as a nation spend more money on health care and insurance than all the other countries of the world combined. How can this be? The richest and most affluent nation on the planet is in a dismal state of affairs with the total health care industry. Maybe it is because modern allopathic medicine has totally lost focus on the diagnosis and treatment of health challenges and are more directed to symptoms-based treatment protocols vs. finding the root causes and addressing these causes of health challenges. Most Americans are totally disillusioned and utterly frustrated when going to a doctor’s office due to improper time constraints in the evaluation and diagnosis of their
www.GoNaturalAwakenings.com
particular health complaints. Chronic conditions such as cancer, arthritus, endocrine conditions, autoimmune diseases, gastrointestinal dysfunction, brain diseases, and many other conditions are severely misdiagnosed and mistreated. Let’s just look at the number one prescribed health challenge with more medication prescribed than all other health challenges: thyroid. More money is spent on thyroid medication than even cholesterol medication (statin drugs). Yet, the health challenge of the thyroid gland is usually grossly misdiagnosed and mistreated. In traditional allopathic (MD)/ osteopathic (DO) medicine, thyroid conditions are treated with only types of medication: Synthroid/ Levothyroxin, which is synthetic T-4; or, if you really lucky, Cytomel, which is synthetic form of T-3. So whether you have an adrenal condition resulting in abnormal thyroid function, a hypothalamic or pituatary gland dysfunction, a deficiency of iodine (potassium iodide) or tyrosine (amino acid), selenium, iron, or hydrochloric acid, heavy metal toxicity resulting in a lack of conversion from T-4 to T-3, auto-immune thyroiditis (Hoshimoto’s Disease), you the patient will not be properly diagnosed and treated with the proper protocol. It is vitally important that all the avenues of thyroid dysfunction be identified and addressed. We in functional/alternative medicine are now finding out even new research and ideas of how just important the gut (gastrointestinal tract) is in the overall wellbeing of the human body with particular emphasis with
the thyroid gland. Yes, G.I. tract is extremely important in the cause(s) of thyroid disease, but when was the last time a medical patient on synthetic thyroid medication was told that their intestinal tract could be the problem causing their thyroid disease? Rarely if ever are any of these issues mentioned or discussed with patients suffering with chronic thyroid disease(s). It is apalling that our health care system and providers totally ignore the causes of thyroid conditions and treat symptoms only, knowing full well that they are putting a band aid on such conditions by treating just the symptoms and not addressing the root causes of the disease. A dedicated approach is to take the proper history, evaluate, and come up with the correct treatment protocol. Why would anyone invest in a product or service that is not correct or justified for the money spent? Americans are now in a new paradigm shift and awakening to the fact that the modern medical model for the care and treatment of chronic health challenges is archaic and dismal in the final outcomes. More and more people are looking for physicians who think “outside the box” and with this search comes a responsibility of these patients to also think outside the box. Every one of us is a product of our environment. You are a product of your total exposures all around you. You, the American consumer, must take responsibility for your wellbeing, and not think for a minute that you can be fixed by modern medical means or prescription medicines. ©2015 Michael Badanek. Healing Journeys
Paul Stutzman Finds Universal Truths on His Treks by Randy Kambic
P
aul Stutzman was a successful executive with a family restaurant chain, and he was a happy father and husband married for more than 30 years when his wife, Mary, passed away from breast cancer in 2006. Questioning his faith as to why this happened, Stutzman quit his job to hike the 2,168-mile Appalachian Trail, advising everyone he encountered, “Don’t take spouses and families for granted.” His book, Hiking Through, recounts this extreme adventure and relates his subsequent thoughts about grief, healing and life. Stutzman chronicled his second journey, a 5,000-mile-plus crosscountry trek, in Biking Across America. This time, he perceived a “noble, yet humble America that still exists and inspires.” More recently, the author has turned to fiction with The Wanderers and Wandering Home, both enriched with reflections upon the values of his Amish Mennonite upbringing and marriage.
What kept you going? Early on, I realized how soothing nature was to my
grieving soul. Still, there were times it would have been easy to abandon my journeys and head for the safety of home. The desire to discover if my life held any meaning after such a great loss kept me moving forward. I kept telling myself on both journeys, “If my wife can fight cancer for four years, I can overcome any obstacle I encounter.” I was determined to write about what I was being taught by nature. I also believed books written by and about someone seeking solace via an incomplete pilgrimage would be cheating the reader.
What do such journeys teach about nature and our response to experiencing it? I find comfort in nature. I believe the beautiful streams and waterfalls, the grand views from mountaintops and the wildlife were all created for our enjoyment. When we absorb this beauty and wonderment, the stresses in life slowly melt away. Granted, not everyone will be able to do what I did; however, a stroll through a local park, along a beach or in a flower garden can have similar effects.
Did these extended physical endeavors make mental demands that catalyzed unexpected self-growth? Treks like these into the unknown are physically demanding. With time and effort, one’s body gets into shape for extended hiking and biking. The mental hurdle must be crossed next. You’ll miss home and loved ones. Loneliness will set in. This is where you discover who the real you is. Are you tenacious enough to push through the desire to abandon the pilgrimage or will you succumb to the allure of comfort and safety? On my journeys, I had to make difficult choices. There is a saying that applies to folks planning to hike the AT end-to-end through 14 states: “If hiking the entire Appalachian Trail isn’t the most important thing in your life, you won’t accomplish it.” My daughter gave birth to my grandson while I was hiking. Although she asked that I come home for the event, I declined. I kept on hiking because I knew I wouldn’t return to the trail if I went home. I’d spent my lifetime trying to do the right things for my three children, but now had to do what was right for me.
What did you learn about Americans along the way? I discovered that most Americans are kind, law-abiding citizens. Most are still willing to help a stranger in need. Unfortunately, I feel we focus too much time and energy on the minority of malcontents.
How have these experiences informed your creative process? America is a great country. The beauty I’ve witnessed from a bicycle seat and on two feet hiking the mountains is a continual source of inspiration. Many folks are unable to do what I do. My ongoing desire is to describe the images imprinted in my mind in such a way that others can feel as if they are there walking with me. For more information, visit PaulStutzman.com. Medical Thermography
A Key to Prevention by Kristin Burton Certified Clinical Thermographer
M
ost doctors now agree that inflammation is responsible for the development of many chronic diseases such as heart disease, cancer, stroke, arthritis, diabetes, high blood pressure, neurological conditions and thyroid challenges. Modern science now brings us a very effective strategy for detecting this inflammation: medical thermography. Thermography is the only imaging method that helps detect early inflammation. Thus, thermography can help prevent many negative health conditions from developing because it gives such an early look, when prevention can still be a solution. Thermal imaging is perhaps best known for its application in breast thermography. The high-definition infrared cameras that thermal technicians use can screen for many unhealthy conditions in the breasts— lymph congestion, dilated ducts, hormone imbalances, general inflammation, and early signs of neovascularity. The most common type of breast health problem we see is lymphatic congestion. Women don’t realize that the foods they eat and the products they use on a daily basis are sabotaging their breast health. When you consume pesticides on produce, artificial hormones from meat products, BPAs from plastics, aluminum in antiperspirants, and skin care products with parabens, they affect the hormone receptors in the breasts and can cause inflammation which can lead to disease. When we see this inflammation we work with women to help them clear their breasts by using specific
www.GoNaturalAwakenings.com
techniques that are simple yet effective. Many women feel that mammograms are their best strategy for breast health. However, mammograms are part of the cancer detection process and have very little to do with breast health. Why wait all the way for a mammogram to detect visible cancer, when you can be actively involved in preventing it? Thermography gives us a very early indication that the breasts are unhealthy, long before a mammogram would actually find cancer. Every woman deserves this early look.
But breast thermography is only a small part of the thermographic technology. “We use Thermography in our clinic for so much more than breast imaging,” says Dr. James Lemire of Lemire Clinic in Ocala. “Most women don’t realize that heart disease kills 10 times more women than breast cancer,
and thermal imaging gives us a very good look at the carotid arteries. It also shows signs on the chest which may indicate inflammation present in the coronary arteries of the heart.” I agree that this is perhaps the most valuable use of thermography. ©2015 Kristin Burton. A
great experiment in the desert called the biodome created a living environment for human, plant and animal life. A huge glass dome was constructed to house an artificial, controlled environment with purified air and water, healthy soil and filtered light. The intent was to afford perfect growing conditions for trees, fruits and vegetables, as well as humans. People lived in the biodome, for many months at a time, and everything seemed to do well with one exception. When the trees grew to a certain height, they would topple over. It baffled scientists until they realized they forgot to include the natural element of wind. Trees need wind to blow against them because it causes their root systems to grow deeper, which supports the tree as it grows taller. Who among us doesn’t long for a perfect growing environment for ourselves, with no disruptions from outside influences? We strive to avoid the times of contrast and tension, when life’s daily challenges push against us. When they do, the normal tendency is to curse them. If trees could talk, would we hear them curse the wind each time they encountered a storm? We can learn a great deal from nature’s wisdom at work if we are open to the lesson. Watch how a tree bends and sways gracefully when the wind blows against it. It does not stand rigid, resisting the flow of energy. It does not push back. The tree accepts the strong wind as a blessing that helps it grow. Such experiences develop our character and deepen our spiritual roots. When we grow deep, we too, stand tall. Getting Back Your Smile by Perry Ekstrand, DDS, LVIF, The Swedish Dentist
O
ne of the things I most love to do is to give back a smile. There are several ways to do this in my profession. One wonderful program, sponsored by the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentists, is called “Give back a Smile.” This program helps battered women, who have had their smile damaged through domestic violence, get their smile back. We volunteer as a team on our off hours and it truly is rewarding to bring a smile back to someone who has had it taken away. The only prerequisite is that the person must have removed themselves from the violent situation for a year or longer. On our most recent case, we were blessed to have a local dental lab donate the crown work for the woman we were assigned to help. It truly is a blessing to help people so deserving of our attention. Another worthy charity effort is the “Smile Train,” a program that sends dentists, oral surgeons, and plastic surgeons around the globe helping children and adults who have cleft palates. Each surgery can be funded for just $250, and participants stop and train the surgeons in the country where they are working so they can follow procedures and keep the program alive in their own country. Another way to give a smile back is to help someone who has had their teeth removed many years ago and has been wearing dentures. As time passes, the bone structure that held their teeth and face in place starts to disappear because the teeth are no longer there. When the bone recedes, the smile collapses. The chin gets closer to the nose, and the face ages much faster
www.GoNaturalAwakenings.com
than the faces of those who have kept their teeth. Today, we can measure where the jaw and smile should be in proportion to the rest of the face. We evaluate and relax the muscles of the face and jaw, and open the smile and bite up to where it should have been. We can give them a new set of beautiful teeth for aesthetics and implants to bring them back to 90% of the function, just as if they had their own teeth back, as well as helping them look many years younger. We call it the New You™ and it is truly remarkable how people bask in the glow of a new smile. How about those people who have their own teeth, but they have become yellow, the old fillings and crowns don’t match any more, the amalgam fillings are breaking down. They, too, have their chin too close to their nose from grinding their teeth down literally to the pulp. This can come from aging, stress, having had some teeth removed, or having teeth crowned years ago where the bite was not quite right. The teeth are usually short and squared off, both upper and lower. Often the person appears to be toothless because you can’t see any teeth. I have seen them ground down to the gums with literally nothing sticking up. Teeth should be elongated. The length of a tooth should be about 1.25 times the width. Most of the time, we can go in and open the bite much as I described in the last paragraph, only we can use the natural teeth and in build beautiful porcelain crowns and veneers giving people a new lease on life. Now, you cannot do a few teeth here and there. Think about it: If I only
elongated four teeth in the front, none of the back teeth would touch. Can’t have that. Normally we do a jaw at a time. We start on the top and do all of them in one sitting. We put temporary crowns on, and about three weeks later we have the real teeth and we bond them in. Then we get started on the bottom. Same procedure. There are variations on this. Sometimes we have extractions that need to heal. Sometimes we have bone grafts, implants, and even partial dentures that are attached with special snaps to the teeth. This can change the time frame immensely. In the best case scenario, a full mouth reconstruction can be done in a month—at the other end of the spectrum you can look at a year or even longer. So don’t go to your dentist and tell him to wrap it up in a month. It is different for each individual. Once it is done, you have a beautiful smile and you can also chew properly. This affects your general health, and your gastrointestinal tract will certainly be happier. I met someone about a year ago who’d had a lot of implants and teeth done 35 years before, and it looked as if it was done yesterday. Did she spend a good chunk of change? Of course she did. But really, 35 years later it was not a lot of money. Most people drop more money on cars and toys than on teeth. Cars and toys are gone in just a few short years most of the time. Giving people new smiles is rewarding, especially when you see the great reveal. Don’t let your teeth get shorter and shorter. Call your doctor today and see what s/he can do about it. ©2015 Perry Ekstrand. Spring Greening Easy Ways to Detox a House by Lane Vail
F
or most individuals, odorous chemicals are simply unpleasant. For those that are sensitive and susceptible, however, even common chemical exposures may evoke a toxicant-induced loss of tolerance (TILT) marked by multiplesystem symptoms such as headaches, fatigue, autoimmune disease, asthma, depression and food intolerance. Since the post-World War II expansion of petrochemicals, the incidence of TILT has increased dramatically, says Claudia Miller, a medical doctor, researcher and professor at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston and co-author of Chemical Exposures: Low Levels and High Stakes. “Fortunately, public awareness has also grown significantly in the last few years,” says Rick Smith, Ph.D., a Canadian environmentalist who co-authored Toxin Toxout. “Now companies and governments worldwide are moving toward making safer products.” We can support progress by leveraging some practical tips in greening our home.
20
Start somewhere. Many volatile organic compounds (VOC) that include formaldehyde and benzene are concealed in household items such as couches, chairs, particleboard furniture, mattresses, box springs, carpeting, rugs, synthetic flooring, wallpaper and paint. Green TV host and Fresh Living author Sara Snow implores us not to become overwhelmed, disheartened or fearful. “Creating a healthy home is a gradual process that doesn’t require throwing all the furniture out,” she advises. Start by scrutinizing labels and choosing not to bring new toxins in. For example, polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is widely found to be associated with reproductive toxicity and is found in many waterproofed and flexible plastics. Select PVC-free toys, shower curtain liners and mattress covers. In the kitchen, avoid potentially carcinogenic perfluorinated chemicals (PFC) found in nonstick coatings of pots and pans. Toss the Teflon when it scratches, says Snow, and upgrade to stainless steel or cast iron. Weed out bi-
sphenols, the DNA-disrupting chemicals found in plastics and epoxy resin can liners. Even “BPA-free” products likely contain alternative and equally harmful substances, according to a recent study published in Chemosphere. Choose clear glass instead of plastic containers. When remodeling, look for zeroVOC items, Miller says, plus materials free of stain-resistant sprays and flame retardants whose efficacy is questionable. Consider natural fiber rugs like jute or wool. Forest Stewardship Council-certified hardwoods or alternative flooring like cork or glass tile are safer investments in long-term well-being. Clean green. Conventional cleaners are among the worst offenders, and even some “eco-cleaners” can be deceptively unsafe, says Smith. He recommends avoiding antibacterial products containing triclosan, which proliferates antibiotic-resistant bacteria that prolong and exacerbate illnesses, as well as phthalates, a chemical oil that carries artificial aromas and has been repeatedly linked to cancer and abnormal fetal development. “Even so-called natural fragrances are often complex petrochemicals that outgas and contaminate the air,” notes Miller. Snow advises formulating products at home using staple pantry ingredients, including distilled white vinegar for disinfecting, baking soda for scouring, liquid castile soap for sudsing, lemon juice for degreasing and olive oil for polishing. Freshen with fresh air. Americans spend about 90 percent of their time amid indoor air pollutants that are significantly more concentrated than outdoor pollutants, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reports. “Most energy-efficient homes are well sealed with ventilation systems that recirculate indoor air, so opening the windows helps dilute accumulated airborne toxins,” says Miller. Snow further recommends bringing air-purifying plants into the home such as Gerbera daisies, bamboo palms and English ivy. Vacuum and dust. Vacuuming with a high-efficiency particulate arrestance (HEPA) filter and dusting with a moist cloth eliminates allergens such as pet dander, mites, pollen and mold, and
helps remove phthalates, flame retardants, lead, and pesticides that “latch onto house dust and accumulate in dust bunnies,” says Smith. Weed out lawn chemicals. “Organophosphate pesticides are profoundly neurotoxic,” says Miller, especially to the developing brains of children. Instead try integrated pest management, which involves controlling pests’ food sources and applying non-toxic deterrents. Eliminating potentially carcinogenic herbicides might mean managing more weeds, says Snow, but it’s worth it. Eat green. “Buying produce as close to its source as possible, from a farmer or farmers’ market, provides threefold benefits,” says Snow—less wasteful packaging, reduced exposure to chemical plastics and greater concentration of healthpromoting nutrients. Buy in bulk and favor glass containers or rectangular cardboard cartons. Take tests. Radon, an invisible, odorless gas that can emanate from the ground and accumulate in homes, annually causes 21,000 U.S. lung cancer deaths, according to the U.S. EPA. Lead, a neurotoxin that may occasionally leach from home water pipes, can also hide in pre-1978 paint. Testing for both and implementing reduction or precautionary measures is simple, advises Smith. Most hardware stores stock test kits. Lane Vail is a freelance writer and blogger at DiscoveringHomemaking.com.

Qigong Healing and Universal Oneness Interview with Jeff Primack, Founder of the Qi Revolution Conference by Kathy Rivera
K
athy Rivera Wallace: I attended your National Event in Orlando before and was blown away seeing so many different types of people practicing Qigong together. What makes learning Qigong in big groups more powerful, and what do you think has allowed you to reach such a large audience?
people to FEEL AND CONNECT TO QI POWERFULLY, which is the most important factor. Feeling energy pulsing through your body is a clear benefit, and men are especially drawn to the tangibility of Qigong. Feeling a ‘magnetic arc of energy’ flowing overhead and pulsing through the arms is heavenly divine.
Jeff Primack: Where two or more are gathered, a unified Qi field exists. Qigong breaks through people’s doubt with a tangible magnetic force. When a few thousand people practice Qigong in a convention center ballroom, the group energy from all the focused people makes the Qi far stronger than what we can achieve alone. The most spiritually profound practices are breathing exercises that deliver a type of ‘euphoric high’ from the oxygen and energy absorption. Part of our success in sharing Qigong comes from the use of video-animation and specialized music allowing
KRW: I found the Qi so life changing. Can you outline the overall essence of Qigong for newcomers?
22
JP: The first goal of Qigong is to absorb EXTERNAL QI IN THE AIR we breathe and live inside of. Breathing techniques and graceful movements harness and absorb this energy directly. Your PERSONAL ENERGY IS INTERNAL QI, and this builds up quickly with practice and eventually “Overflows the Dan Tien”. The most profound secret of Qigong is to raise energy up the spine to the pineal and pituitary glands. I’ve spent my life studying with different Qi-
gong masters from all over the world and it’s fascinating to see, unlike professional athletes, that the oldest Qigong practitioners have the strongest abilities. KRW: You’re currently teaching a FoodHealing class with a physician, Claudia Gabrielle, MD. How does the medical community respond to your teachings on using food to reverse specific diseases? JP: To be honest, when I first began teaching Food-Healing in 2005, there was less interest from physicians than now. Due to more scientific studies now backing the food protocols I’ve shared the last 10 years, I have a lot more attention from doctors and have certified many in our Conquering Any Disease Food Healing system. Dr. Claudia was deeply inspired by the Qi Revolution food component. She grew tired of prescribing Lipitor to every patient with high cholesterol, especially when studies now show high cholesterol is not even a key indicator for risk. Since meeting us last year, she’s helped countless patients with our food protocols for heart disease and is teaching a class with me to present her latest testimonials. Both Qigong and Food Healing are beneficial to reaching our highest potential. KRW: I’m so excited that you will be conducting the 10th Annual Qigong National Event in Orlando. I know this is your biggest event and you often bring
in guest Qigong Masters with special gifts. What high level presenters have you found for us this year? JP: This year’s line-up may surpass anything we’ve ever produced. RealDeal Tai Chi Master, Jesse Tsao, is a Qi-Angel defying the laws of force. In my opinion, he is at a very high level of Qigong. Yoda-like skill allows him to ground firmly and remain “unmovable” even with 10 huge men pushing him back. Jesse travels worldwide teaching martial arts experts, but he will tell you his heart dwells in the internal practice of Qigong. To train with the masters is a rare gift only good karma can bring. He will be honoring us with a visit to share his rooting insights and Qigong secrets. Another master presenter joining the National Event is veteran Acupuncturist Tom Tam. He helps cancer patients with the application of energy in acupuncture needles. Master Tom Tam has compassionately practiced his special type of energy medicine in the Boston area for 20 years and is coming to share his wisdom. There is rumor of a third master presenter coming, so special that we cannot mention their name. Stay tuned where the light abide, there’s no place to hide, look deep inside. Interviewer Kathy Rivera Wallace is a TV talk show host who regularly interviews leading wellness experts. Jeff Primack is a Qigong teacher who studied with many Qi masters from all over the world and has taught 50,000+ people at live Qi Revolution conferences across the U.S. “Qi Revolution” comes to Orlando Convention Center, featuring guest Qigong Masters, Jesse Tsao and Tom Tam. June 6th–9th Jeff Primack and 200 Qigong teachers will teach 4-days of Qigong for $149! This is the largest Qigong event in the USA. For tickets and more info, call 800-298-8970 or visit QiRevolution.com.

Have Another Piece
L
ast month I wrote about some epic cake failures in my baking repertoire, including a carrot cake with which I let my desire for a spectacularly original creation turn it into a spectacular disaster. I’m happy to say that after many years of trial, error, and experience, I can now make a pretty spectacular (and disaster-free) carrot cake. And I said I’d tell you about it this month. Its official name is the Hail Holy Queen Carrot Cake. It is a tall, threelayer cake, generously ensconced in cream cheese frosting, then coated in toasted coconut and pralines until it looks like a majestic hedgehog. It is a glorious thing of beauty and a joy for however long it lasts. The recipe initially came from a cookbook. But I’ve tweaked it so much over the years that it now stands alone as a truly original creation which bears no resemblance to its ancestor. I’m not about to tell you the cookbook it came from, or share the tweaks which have made it my own. That would be giving away all my secrets. And I don’t do that. Rest assured that I have improved the original recipe in every possible way I could conceive. If an ingredient can be toasted, soaked, seasoned, refined, enlivened, enhanced, or enriched in any way—if it can be taken up a notch—if a next level can be found—if a lily can be gilded—I have done so. The directions take up three recipe
24
cards. Front and back. The ingredients alone take one card. The instructions take another. The frosting takes the front of another card. And the rules of qualification take the back of it. You heard me. I have rules governing the allowance of this cake and who qualifies for it. I have rules because this cake takes a ridiculous lot of work, about five hours start to finish. So when I make an HHQCC, it’s for a darn good reason, and always at my discretion. First of all, I have to really love you to make this cake for you. If I have ever made this cake for you, then you know I love you. If I have not made this cake for you, it does not mean I do not love you. So calm down, You Know Who You Are. Second rule: If I am making it for your birthday, it must be for one ending in a 0 or a 5. The only exceptions are, possibly, 13, 16, 18, and 21. You need a milestone birthday to score an HHQCC. I made it last year for a dear friend’s 50th birthday, and I already have an order for another’s 40th birthday a year from now. The first carrot cake I ever made, the epic failure, was for that same friend’s 30th. (I hope this cake represents that our lives, like the HHQCC, also have improved over the past decade.) Third rule: I will make it for Easter. Jesus rising from the dead deserves a carrot cake. Especially one with “holy” already in the title.
Fourth rule: I will make it for a rite of passage for someone special (see Rule One). This includes weddings, funerals, new babies, engagements, graduations, etc. My best friend had asked me for a carrot cake for her baby shower, but then my grandmother died and I was out of state and missed it. When I got back, the misfortunes of 2014 continued with a dead dog, rampant flu, terrible holidays, and so forth. Then my best friend’s father died on the same day she had her baby. No one has ever deserved a carrot cake more. I made one for the funeral and would have made her two if she had wanted. How odd, to plan to make a cake to celebrate a baby, but to be delayed by a funeral—and then to end up making it for another funeral—but also, still, to celebrate the baby. The circle of life is so strange. The circle of life, perhaps not coincidentally, is shaped like a cake. Her sister, my other best friend, is also having a baby, next month, and I will make her a carrot cake whenever she wants it. She doesn’t have to wait for 40 or Easter. These two will always qualify for the HHQCC. Always. And I feel sure that if the two littlest girls want a carrot cake for any birthday before they hit 13, Aunt Mel will be happy to make it for them. The HHQCC is a labor of love. Like most homemade confections, it takes a lot of time and effort, and it’s appropriate for many occasions in life. A cake you made special for someone says, I’d just like to make things a little sweeter for you right now. It’s a way to show love, which is always the right response. See Rule One. Melody Murphy knows you want a piece of carrot cake just as much as she does right now, and she is just sorry about it.
Lymph Drainage Therapy (LDT), Part 2 Indications for LDT by Natalie Vincent, LMT
I
n last month’s article we described the lymphatic system and its main functions. This month we will discuss in greater detail the conditions that are treated by lymphatic drainage. The lymphatic system plays a fundamental role in regulating the physiological environment by returning protein, cells, and fluid to the general circulation as well as removing metabolic byproducts, dying or mutant cells, microbes, and inorganic matter. Lymphedema is a chronic, progressive swelling of a region of the body that can develop either because of excessive fluid in a normal but overloaded lymphatic system (lymphodynamic edema), or from a defective lymphatic system (lymphostatic edema). The origins of edema are myriad and can include traumas such as strains, sprains, fractures, surgeries, burns, injuries, lower back pain, and more. The reduction of the edema helps make for early, less painful mobilizations. Other origins include infections, parasites, venous insufficiency, and more. Let’s have a look at some of the other areas in which LDT can help. n Dentistry. Tooth pain, post extraction pain, edema, inflammation, hematoma, root canal, orthodontic surgery, gum disease, periodontal disease. n Pneumology, allergies. Chronic bronchitis, bronchial asthma, emphysema, post-pleuritic disorders, cystic fibrosis, inhalations of irritants and toxic chemical poisons that have damaged the mucosa lining of the nasal cavity, throat, bronchial tubes and lungs. n Ear, nose throat. Tinnitus (ringwww.GoNaturalAwakenings.com
ing or buzzing in the ear), vertigo, hearing loss, menieres disease, dry eyes and mouth and lack of salivation, chronic sinusitis, laryngitis, chronic pharyngitis. n Opthalmology. Visual ascuity, chronic glaucoma, cataracts, macular degeneration, retinitis, chronic edema of the eyelids, infection of the eyelids (blepharitis). n Neurology. Headaches, migraines, dystonia, post trauma symptoms from accidents, concussions, stroke, spinal injuries, facial neuralgia, herpes zoster neuralgia, facial paralysis. In the case of Parkinson’s Disease, LDT has been shown to result in diminution of the tremor. In M.S., studies indicate that the crisis times become shorter and the remission periods of MS longer with lymphatic drainage. The action of the drainage in MS has shown to work on the auto aggressive T lymphocytes that cross the blood brain barrier. n Dermatology. Acne, rosacea, chronic and allergic eczema, bags under the eyes. n Gastroenterology (esophagus, intestinges) and liver. LDT has been shown to be effective in helping to restore balance in the gut, as it supports clearing away the unwanted overload of toxins, resulting in better overall digestion and absorption of nutrients. It can also help in cases of chronic constipation, chronic gastritis, chronic diverticulitis, crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, chronic appendicitis, chronic pancreatitis, chronic hepatitis, malabsorption, food poisoning, irritable bowel syndrome—which all help to relieve hemorrhoids and anal fissures. n Gerontology. LDT is a very
good technique to use on elderly people because of its profound effects on tissue regeneration and oxygenation, deep cleansing of the body, immune system stimulation, stress relief, and health maintenance. n Gynecology. Painful menstruation, pelvic inflammation, pelvic congestion, chronic pelvic pain, infertility, PCOS. As LDT helps to clear away excessive toxic and stagnant fluid in the genito-urinary mucosa lining, it has been shown to dissolve ovarian cysts and uterine fibroids within three to six months of consistent treatment, encourages optimal function of the prostate, helps the body to absorb and dissolve cysts in the breasts, and helps to control the lifelong edema of the breast and arms due to removal of the lymph nodes from cancer surgery. n Autoimmune disorders. Lupus, scleroderma, endocrine disorders, autoimmune allergies, chronic fatigue syndrome, Epstein Barr virus, HHV6 (human herpes virus 6), chronic mononucleosis, chronic yeast syndrome, chronic pain and autonomic dystonia. LDT stimulates the immune system and increased lymph flow carries more antigens to the lymph nodes, increasing antibody/antigen contact. It is a preventive measure in decreasing possibilities of infections, and has shown to be very helpful with chronic and subacute inflammatory processes. n Parasympathetic nervous system. Adrenal fatigue. Stimulation of the lymphatics tends to increase parasympathetic tone and diminish sympathetic tone, the “fight or flight” response. This can be very therapeutic in dealing with stress, depression, and sleeping disorders. It also known to reduce pain as LDT alleviates tissuefluid stagnation and inhibits type C nociceptors that trigger pain, and is effective in dealing with chronic pain. Lymphatic drainage therapy is one of the many services provided at HealthCare Partners Family Medicine in The Villages. For an appointment or consultation with Natalie, please call 352750-4333.
