FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE What is Functional Medicine? By Dr. Michael J. Badanek, BS, DC, CNS, DACBN, DCBCN, DM(P)

F

unctional Medicine is patient-centered medical healing at its best. Instead of looking at and treating health problems as isolated diseases, it treats individuals who may have bodily symptoms, imbalances, and dysfunctions. As the graphic of an iceberg shows, a named disease such as diabetes, cancer, or fibromyalgia might be visible above the surface, but according to Functional Medicine, the cause lies in the altered physiology below the surface. Usually, the cause of the disease and its symptoms is an underlying dysfunction or an imbalance of bodily systems. Named diseases are just the tip of the iceberg. Below the surface, according to Functional Medicine, are the real causes of a patient's health problems. If health care treats just the tip of the iceberg, it rarely leads to long-term relief and vibrancy. Identifying and treating the underlying root cause or causes, as Functional Medicine does, has a much better chance to successfully resolve a patient's health challenges. Using scientific principles, advanced diagnostic testing, and treatments other than drugs or surgery, Functional Medicine restores balance in the body's primary physiological processes. The goal is the patient's lifelong optimal health.

How Functional Medicine Heals a Key Health Care Gap Today's health care system is in trouble because it applies a medical management model that works well for acute health problems to chronic health problems, where it is much less successful. If you have a heart attack, accident, or sudden lung infection such as pneumonia, you certainly want a quick-thinking doctor to use all the quick-acting resources of modern medicine, such as life-saving technology, surgery, and antibiotics. We are all grateful for such interventions. However, jumping in with drugs, surgery, and other acute care treatments often does not succeed in helping those with chronic, debilitating ailments, such as diabetes, heart disease, or arthritis. Another approach is needed.

healthbriefs Yummy Berries Cut Heart Attack Risk by a Third

E

ating three or more servings of blueberries and organic strawberries a week may help women reduce their risk of a heart attack, according to research from the University of East Anglia in collaboration with the Harvard School of Public Health. The berries contain high levels of powerful flavonoids called anthocyanins, which may help dilate arteries, counter buildup of plaque and provide other cardiovascular benefits. Published in Circulation: Journal of the American Heart Association, the study involved 93,600 women ages 25 to 42 who completed questionnaires about their diet every four years for 16 years. Those who ate the most berries had a 32 percent reduction in heart attack risk compared with those who ate them once a month or less, even if they ate a diet rich in other fruits and vegetables. “This is the first study to look at the impact of diet in younger and middleaged women,” remarks the study’s lead author, Aedín Cassidy, Ph.D., head of the university’s nutrition department. “Even at an early age, eating more of these fruits may reduce risk of a heart attack later in life.”

Saw Palmetto Combos Combat Enlarged Prostate

T

hree studies published in 2013 support the effectiveness of saw palmetto (Serenoa repens) extract for the treatment of prostate inflammation and other symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), commonly called enlarged prostate. In addition, both lycopene, a dietary carotenoid with strong antioxidant value, and selenium, an essential trace element that promotes an optimal antioxidant/ oxidant balance, have been shown to exert beneficial effects in BPH. Researchers from Italy’s University of Catania studied 168 patients with prostate enlargement among nine urological medical clinics. Those taking a combination of saw palmetto, selenium and lycopene experienced greater reductions of inflammation markers and reduced risk of prostate cancer after three and six months of treatment. In an Australian study from the University of Queensland’s School of Medicine of patients with BPH, 32 men took an encapsulated formula containing saw palmetto, lycopene and other plant extracts, while 25 men were given a placebo. After three months of treatment, men receiving the herbal formulation experienced a 36 percent reduction in related symptoms, while the placebo group showed an 8 percent reduction. The herbal supplement group also showed a 15 percent reduction in daytime urination frequency and an almost 40 percent reduction in nighttime urination frequency. The long-term effectiveness of saw palmetto supplementation was reinforced in a Russian study of 38 patients with early prostate enlargement. After 10 years of receiving 320 milligrams of saw palmetto extract per day, researchers found no progression of the condition among the patients.

Tapping Acupressure Points Heals Trauma in Vets

E

motional Freedom Techniques (EFT) may be an effective treatment for veterans that have been diagnosed with clinical post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), according to a study published in the Journal of Nervous and Mental Disease. EFT involves tapping on acupressure points while focusing on traumatic memories or painful emotions in order to release them. As part of the Veterans’ Stress Project, an anonymous clinical study comprising more than 2,000 participants, 59 veterans with PTSD were randomly assigned to receive either strictly standard care or also experience six, hour-long, EFT sessions. The psychological distress and PTSD symptoms were significantly reduced among veterans receiving the EFT sessions, with 90 percent matriculating out of the criteria for clinical PTSD. At a six-month follow-up, 80 percent of those participants still had symptoms below the clinical level for PTSD. According to Deb Tribbey, national coordinator for the Veterans’ Stress Project, PTSD symptoms that can be resolved with the combined therapy include insomnia, anger, grief, hyper-vigilance and pain. Mindfulness Meditation Reduces the Urge to Light Up

M

indfulness meditation training may help people overcome addiction by activating the brain centers involved in self-control and addictive tendencies, suggests research from the psychology departments of Texas Tech University and the University of Oregon. Scientists led by Yi-Yuan Tang, Ph.D., studied 61 volunteers, including 27 smokers, randomly divided into groups that either received mindfulness meditation training or relaxation training. Two weeks later, after five hours of training, smoking among those in the meditative group decreased by 60 percent, while no significant reduction occurred in the relaxation group. Brain imaging scans determined that the mindfulness meditation training produced increased activity in the anterior cingulate and the prefrontal cortex; regions associated with self-control. Past research led by Tang showed that smokers and those with other addictions exhibited less activity in these areas than those free of addictions. The current study previously determined that myelin and brain cell matter in these two brain regions increases through mindfulness meditation.

Beets Beat Down Blood Pressure

T

wo small studies have linked beets with lower blood pressure. A study from the University of Reading, in England, served beet-fortified bread or bread without beets to 23 healthy men. Those who ate the fortified bread experienced reduced diastolic blood pressure and less artery stiffness during the six hours afterwards. Australia’s Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute studied 15 women and 15 men, divided randomly into groups that consumed either 500 grams of a placebo juice or beets with apple juice. During the 24 hours after consumption, the researchers noted a statistically significant reduction in systolic blood pressure of four to five points among the men drinking the beet juice.

Unconditional Love Hastens Healing

R

esearchers from the University of Miami found that compassionate love, and faith in a compassionate Higher Power, increases healing and reduces disease progression among HIV patients. They studied 177 HIV patients over a 10-year period, tracking biological measures and health behaviors and collecting in-depth data interviews. The scientists coded five criteria of compassionate love derived from the Working Model of Compassionate Love, developed by Lynn Underwood, Ph.D. The progression of HIV disease was reduced among patients who gave and received the most compassionate love. These patients exhibited both a greater level of the immune-boosting white blood cells known as CD4+ T helper cells and a reduced HIV viral load, the measure of HIV in the blood.

A Good Midlife Diet Prolongs Health in Later Years

A

Harvard Medical School study found that how well women age in their 70s is linked to the way they ate earlier in life. Researchers started with 10,670 healthy women in their late 50s and followed them for 15 years. Published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, the results saw fewer chronic diseases among women who followed diets heavy in plant-based foods during midlife; these women were also 34 percent more likely to live past 70. Those who ate most similarly to the Mediterranean diet had even better outcomes—a 46 percent greater likelihood of living past 70 without chronic diseases. Eleven percent of the subjects qualified as healthy agers, which researchers defined as having no major chronic diseases, physical impairments, mental health problems, or trouble with thinking and memory. According to lead author Cecilia Samieri, Ph.D., midlife exposures are thought to be a particularly relevant period because most health conditions develop slowly during the course of many years.

Finding the New Fountain of Youth by James E. Lemire, M.D.

M

ore than 500 years ago, Ponce de Leon, the great Spanish explorer, was linked to the search for the “the fountain of youth” after his arrival in St. Augustine, Florida. Although he never mentioned the fountain of youth in his writings, later authors have linked him to the myth of “the fountain of youth.” Today we are closer than ever to the discovery of the true source of the “fountain of youth.” This new source of the fountain can be explained by new theories of anti-aging. The secret lies within our genes. The latest theory in anti-aging focuses on our telomeres, which are “caps” on the ends of chromosomes and serve to protect the chromosomes from deteriorating or sticking/fusing to each other. Research has shown that active telomeres help to repair damage to chromosomes and reverse aging in the human body. Telomeres are regulated through hormonal activity. Telomere testing is now commercially available through labs in the U.S. and Spain. Learning to lengthen our telomeres has been shown to help: Prevent cancer. A study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that longer telomeres can dramatically reduce your risk of cancer. They found that it didn’t matter what other risk factors you had—the longer your telomeres, the less likely you were to get any kind of cancer. Avoid heart disease. The younger your cells act, the less likely you are to suffer from cardiovascular disease. A study in the journal The Lancet found that people with the shortest telomeres were 40-50% more likely to have a coronary heart disease event than www.GoNaturalAwakenings.com

people with the longest telomeres. Sleep more soundly. In China, researchers looked at the immune systems of people with sleep apnea compared to people who slept normally. The ratio of white blood cells with longer telomeres was significantly higher in healthy people than for people with sleep apnea. Keep your joints strong and painfree. Telomeres appear to shorten faster for people with rheumatoid arthritis. Longer telomeres are associated with lower risk for the immune disease. Keep your brain healthy. Four studies have linked shorter telomeres with Alzheimer’s disease. One found that people with the shortest telomeres were seven times more likely to die from dementia than those with the longest telomeres. Research today has shown many ways to naturally help lengthen our telomeres. They include the following: Increase our magnesium intake. 60% of people today are magnesium deficient. Recommended doses are 600-1,000mg per day, taken along with vitamin B6 to improve absorption. Exercise. Intense physical exercise helps increased telomere length and improve longevity Increase our good cholesterol (HDL). Increase your intake of garlic daily, add niacin “B3,” and add interval training to your exercise program. Elevated homocysteine will shorten our telomeres. Homocysteine can be measured by a simple blood test; if it is elevated, it can be reduced by taking adequate levels of B12 500 µg, folic acid 800 µg, B6 25 mg, riboflavin “B2” 25 mg, and trimethylglycine 500 mg. A study published in the American

Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that multivitamins can keep you younger, longer. It shows that people who take a daily multivitamin had younger DNA and had 5.1 percent longer telomeres than people who did not take a multi. In fact, this study was full of good news. It turns out that vitamin B12 supplements increase telomere length. And vitamins C and E prevent telomere shortening, which increases the life span of cells. Also include Vit D3. The more vit D3, the longer the telomeres will be. Usually 2,000-5,000 IU is optimal while monitoring the blood levels. Meditation is another way to activate telomerase, the enzyme which lengthens telomeres. In a study recent study at the University of California-Davis, researchers looked at people who were at a wellness retreat and found that after three months, people doing meditation training had 33 percent higher telomerase activity in their white blood cells than those who weren’t meditating. Several remedies from herbs have been found to be helpful to increase telomeres, including TA-65 from astralagus by TA Sciences, and HRT+, an herbal remedy from Thailand, both available at the Lemire Clinic. Another key to anti-aging is the Himalayan Salt Room! The positive effect of negative ions helps to improve our health and slow our aging. In summary, to help reduce aging, feed mind, body, and spirit and build up the immune system with good thoughts and attitudes; proper diet, supplements, exercise, rest, stress management; healthy emotions, faith, and joy. Applying these principles will allow you to live to be a healthy and vibrant 100-plus-year-old. References: The Fountain of Youth Breakthrough by Dr. Al Sears. THE HEALING POWER OF STORY How Telling Our Truths Can Set Us Free by Judith Fertig

A

fter his deployment in Iraq, U.S. Marine Captain Tyler Boudreau returned home in 2004 with post-traumatic stress syndrome and an emotional war wound that experts now call a “moral injury.” He could only sleep for an hour or two at night. He refused to take showers or leave the house for long periods of time. He and his wife divorced. “My body was home, but my head was still there [in Iraq],” he recounts. At first, Boudreau tried to make sense of his conflicted feelings by writing fiction. Then he wrote a detailed, nonfiction analysis of his deployment, but that didn’t help, either. In 2009 he wrote a memoir, Packing Inferno: The Unmaking of a Marine, that came closer to conveying his personal truth. “I needed to get back into the [Iraq] story,” he says, so he could pull his life back together in Northampton, Massachusetts. Like Boudreau, we all have stories—ongoing and ever-changing—that we tell ourselves to make sense of our

10

lives. They can help us heal and powerfully guide us through life, or just as powerfully, hold us back. In 1949, Sarah Lawrence College Professor Joseph Campbell published The Hero with a Thousand Faces, in which he outlined a master monomyth. It involves leaving everyday life and answering a call to adventure, getting help from others along the way, facing adversity and returning with a gift, or boon, for ourselves and others. It’s a basic pattern of human existence, with endless variations.

Power to Heal the Body

How does telling our truth help heal our body? Professor James Pennebaker, Ph.D., chair of psychology at the University of Texas at Austin, is a pioneer in the mind-body benefits of story, which he explores in Opening Up: The Healing Power of Expressing Emotions. In the late 1980s, while consulting for the Texas prison system, Pennebaker discovered that when suspects lied while taking polygraph tests, their heart

rate rose, but when they confessed the truth, they relaxed. “Our cells know the truth,” writes microbiologist Sondra Barrett, Ph.D., who also blogs at SondraBarrett.com, in Secrets of Your Cells, “Our physiology responds to what we’re thinking, including what we don’t want people to know.” When we are afraid to tell a story and keep it in, “Our cells broadcast a signal of danger,” she explains. “Molecules of adrenalin, along with stress hormones, connect with receptors on heart, muscle and lung cells— and in the case of long-term sustained stress, immune cells.” We experience increased heart rate, tense muscles, shortness of breath and lower immunity when we’re stressed. She notes, “When we release the stories and feelings that torment us, our cells respond with great relief and once again become havens of safety.” We need to tell our stories even in facing life-threatening illness, and maybe because of it. Dr. Shayna Watson, an oncologist at the Cancer Centre of Southeastern Ontario, in Canada, encourages physicians to listen to patients. “In the name of efficiency,” she reports in an article in Canadian Family Physician, “it’s easy to block out patients’ stories and deal only with the ‘facts’, to see the chat, the time and the stories as luxuries for when there is a cancellation. The study of narrative tells us, however, that in these easily neglected moments we might find more than we expect; there can be understanding, relationship building and healing— the elements of our common humanity.” A current problem is but a dot on the entire timeline of a person’s existence. By keeping their larger story in mind, patients can find a wider perspective, with the strength and resolve to heal, while the physician can see the patient as a person, rather than a diagnosis.

Power to Heal Emotions

“Telling your story may be the most powerful medicine on Earth,” says Dr. Lissa Rankin, the author of Mind Over Medicine, who practices integra-

tive medicine in Mill Valley, California. She’s tested the concept firsthand. “So many of us are tormented by the insane idea that we’re separate, disconnected beings, suffering all by our little lonesome selves,” she observes. “That’s exactly how I felt when I started blogging, as if I was the only one in the whole wide world who had lost her mojo and longed to get it back. Then I started telling my story—and voilà! Millions of people responded to tell me how they had once lost theirs and since gotten it back.” They did it by telling their stories, witnessed with loving attention by others who care. “Each of us is a constantly unfolding narrative, a hero in a novel no one else can write. Yet, so many of us leave our stories untold, our songs unsung,” remarks Rankin. “When this happens, we wind up feeling lonely, listless and out of touch with our life purpose. We are plagued with a chronic sense that something is out of alignment. We may even wind up feeling unworthy, unloved or sick,” says

Rankin, who blogs on related topics at LissaRankin.com.

Power to Heal a Family

Sometimes, writing a new story can help keep families connected. Kansas City, Missouri, author and columnist Deborah Shouse took an unplanned and unwanted, yet ultimately rewarding journey with her mother through Alzheimer’s disease. Shouse discovered that as her mother was losing her memory and identity through dementia, crafting a new narrative helped her family hold it together, a process she details in Love in the Land of Dementia. “You have to celebrate the person who is still with you,” Shouse says, noting we may discover a different, but still interesting, person who communicates in ways other than talking. She recommends employing a technique she calls The Hero Project, which she developed with her partner, Ron Zoglin. It uses words, photos and craft supplies in what Shouse terms “word-scrapping” to

generate and tell a new story that helps keep the personal connection we have with our loved one and make visits more positive. She shares more supportive insights at DeborahShouseWrites.wordpress.com. Sharing an old story may also provide a rare link to the past for a person with dementia. “Savor and write down the stories you’re told, even if you hear certain ones many times,” Shouse counsels. “By writing down the most often-repeated stories, you create a legacy to share with family, friends and other caregivers.”

Power of the Wrong Story

Our thoughts are a shorthand version of a longer life story, says author Byron Katie, a self-help specialist from Ojai, California, who addresses reader stories via blog posts at ByronKatie. com. Sometimes we tell ourselves the wrong story, one that keeps us from realizing our full potential, while making us miserable at the same time. Examples might include “I will always be over-

weight,” “My partner doesn’t love me” or “I’m stuck here.” Katie’s book, Who Would You Be Without Your Story? explores how we often take what happens in our lives, create a story with negative overtones, believe that version of the story and make ourselves unhappy. “The cause of suffering is the thought that we’re believing it,” she says. By questioning our stories, turning them around and crafting new and more truthful ones, we can change our lives.

Power to Heal the Community

Humorist, speaker, and professional storyteller Kim Weitkamp, of Christiansburg, Virginia, knows that the power of story creates wider ripples. She sees it happen every time she performs at festivals and events around the country. “It is naturally in our DNA to communicate in story form,” she advises. “The power of story causes great revelation and change in those who listen.” She cites supporting studies conducted by psychologists Marshall Duke, Ph.D., and Robyn Fivush, Ph.D., at the Emory Center for Myth and Ritual in American Life, in Atlanta, Georgia. “They found that children—at ages 4, 14, 44 or 104, because we’re all children at heart—are more resilient and happy and rebound faster from stress when they know their family stories. They know they’re part of something that’s bigger than themselves that people in their family have kept going,” says Weitkamp. “When people leave a storytelling event, they leave telling stories,” she says with a smile, “and that results in happier and healthier families and communities.” Judith Fertig tells stories about food at AlfrescoFoodAndLifestyle. blogspot.com from Overland Park, KS.

Honing Your True Story Write the Truth

James Pennebaker and fellow researchers at the University of Texas at Austin found that a simple writing exercise can help free people from emotional burdens, as first reported in the Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology. Here’s how to apply it. Every morning for four consecutive days, write down feelings about what is bothersome: n Something you are thinking or worrying about too much. n Something you feel is affecting your life in an unhealthy way. n Something you have been avoiding for days, weeks or years. The idea is to write about the emotions that surround this thing you’re reluctant to admit or speak about. Pennebaker says it isn’t necessary to reread what’s written or tell anyone about it. The simple act of writing down emotions surrounding a story begins the process of releasing it and relaxing.

Story Slams

The Moth organization features true stories told live by people of all ages on The Moth Radio Hour, the Internet, and at group story “slams” around the world. At TheMoth.org, would-be storytellers find tips on how to craft their tales for a listening audience at live story slams around the

world, as well as via webcasts. They can then record a two-minute story pitch in order to be accepted as a live storyteller during a future slam.

Ask and Answer

Moving through the process Byron Katie calls “the work” uncovers the truth about the stories we are telling ourselves in order to create newer, healthier ones. First, think of a negative thought that’s worrying you, such as “I’m stuck.” Next, ask four questions about it. n Is it true? n Can I absolutely know it’s true? n How do I react—what happens— when I believe that thought? n Who would I be without the thought? Now write down honest answers, which might be something like: “I’m not really stuck, I just think I am. Deep down, I know I have the power to move forward, but am unsure about the direction or way to go about it, so I feel anxious. Without the thought of ‘I’m stuck,’ I would feel freer to find a solution.” Then, turn those thoughts around, for example, to, “Really, when I think about it, I feel much freer than when I deny or gloss over my erroneous thought.” When we turn around a specific limiting thought, we can experience the power of letting go of not only a misguided, but ultimately untrue, internal story.

hy suffer needlessly with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, Premature Ovarian Failure, and benign breast problems when the treatment is so simple, nontoxic and affordable? Unfortunately, a large and growing population of women in reproductive years have a painful monthly menstrual cycle. With severe bleeding, cramping, low back pain, severe breast pain and tenderness, along with temperature regulation dysfunction, it is no wonder why today’s women are at their wits’ end in finding symptomatic relief from their monthly nightmare. But it is getting far worse. It is now estimated that one in three women age 16-50 are suffering with the above symptoms and can’t find any relief with tradition medical approaches. In my last 34 years in clinical practice, I have seen in my office a consistent increase in the numbers of women in this category and also starting at much earlier ages. But what are the causes of these symptoms? and how can women treat themselves without the serious secondary consequences of traditional medicines or with classic hormone replacement therapy? PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) is one of many conditions affecting women. This condition is the uncontrolled proliferation of cells of the ovary, leading to extreme pain, excessive bleeding, bloating, hot and cold temperature changes, and psychological changes of depression, psychosis, and aggressive behaviors. The standard protocol of medical treatment is hormonal replacement with estrogens and progesterones. Unfortunately, this is only symptom-based treatment and the clinician is not getting to the root cause. With a proper clinical history, evaluation, and diagnostic studies, the proper diagnosis can be easily ascertained and proper treatment of the causes can begin with good

www.GoNaturalAwakenings.com

to excellent results of not just relieving the presenting symptoms, but also addressing and treating the original causes. POF (Premature Ovarian Failure) is another devastating condition with the onset of menopause before age 40. While some cases of POF have a genetic cause (such as Turner’s Syndrome), or are caused by chemotherapy or trauma, the recent studies suggest that most cases of POF may actually be due to autoimmune attack on the ovarian follicles and the eggs they contain. Sixty-five to 70 percent of the women affected are between ages 26-34, and 30 to 40 percent may have a family history of POF. Approximately 15 percent of women with POF have other autoimmune endocrine diseases, most commonly thyroid disease, Addison’s disease, Type 1 diabetes, and autoimmune polyglandular syndromes. While the causes may be different with POF, the symptoms are the same as in normal menopause, with hot flashes, thinned and dry vaginal tissues, painful sex, infertility, bone loss, and increased risk of cardiovascular disease caused by estrogen deprivation. Here again, the prudent health care provider must find the causes of the underlying autoimmune factors and thus the symptoms will be relieved. Autoimmune diseases are now an everyday occurrence with a documented 80 to 120 known autoimmune diseases noted in medicine. Let’s briefly touch on benign breast lesions (fibroids). There is a direct correlation between ovarian disease and breast disease. As a matter of fact, one out of two women who suffer with ovarian disease(s) will also develop benign or malignant breast cancers in her lifetime. The same underlying predisposed conditions are the same in nearly all cases. The issues of concern with the breast are usually toxicity issues and nutritional deficiency. Trauma and underlying genetic inherent traits are of very small importance. It has been proposed that just ingesting two vital and essential nutrients could foreseeably eliminate 95% of all breast issues, both benign and malignant. This is a wonderful finding noted by many leading researchers of today. Unfortunately, you will never hear about these proven studies due to the fact that it would cause panic

and havoc in the medical establishment. So after a very brief discussion of the three above conditions, how do women today address these issues? You have to have a complete new mindset as to the causes of sickness and disease. We don’t live and work in the same environment as our grandparents and even our parents did. With the high technology today of electromagnetic exposure, increased exposure to plastics, toxic metals, pesticides, hormones, genetically modified foods, polluted air and water, mercury dentistry, and vaccinations, just to name a few of the exposures resulting in poor health, it is no wonder why we are experiencing great increases in clinical conditions. The good news is that you can empower yourself with knowledge and the expertise of a highly trained clinician to aggressively diagnose and treat these conditions’ causes, and not just mask the symptoms, which will result in a much more devastating or terminal end result if left unchecked. Today, there is a growing paradigm shift of enlightenment of humanity. The populations of the world are realizing that good health can be attained, but that you the patient must work to achieve that goal. With the proliferation of the Internet, people are becoming enlightened with new and exciting vistas of knowledge, and a new awakening is emerging. We at our facility have been on that cutting edge for the last 34+ years and are proud of our accomplishments in the cutting-edge diagnostic and clinical care of our patients. Yes, we think outside the box; however, it is mainstream medicine that is now realizing that what they did and stood for in the past 50-75 years did not work out too well. They, too, are realizing that you can’t poison an enzymatic reaction or block a receptor site on a cellular membrane and expect to correct a clinical condition. To discuss any health matters with Dr. Badanek, call 352-622-1151 or visit www. AlternativeWholisticHealth.com and view the many conditions we evaluate and treat at our office. Mindful Tips

fitbody

Feel the Earth move under your (bare) feet. Improve mood, reduce pain and deepen sleep by going outside barefoot, says Dr. Laura Koniver, of Charleston, South Carolina, a featured expert in the documentary, The Grounded. “The Earth’s surface contains an infinite reservoir of free electrons, which, upon contact with the body, can neutralize damage from free radicals,” she says.

FEET How to Make Walking Part of Everyday Life

Notice nature. Alexandra Horowitz, author of On Looking: Eleven Walks with Expert Eyes, finds walking outdoors infinitely more engaging than exercising in the gym. Seek out woodsy hikes, scenic waterways or historic downtowns, and “open up to experiencing the world,” she says.

by Lane Vail

H

ippocrates called walking “man’s best medicine,” and Americans agree: According to the U.S. Surgeon General, walking is America’s most popular form of fitness. It’s free, convenient, and simple. The Foundation for Chronic Disease Prevention reveals that 10,000 daily steps help lower blood pressure, shed pounds, decrease stress, and reduce the risk of heart disease and Type 2 diabetes. Here’s how to rev up the routine and stay motivated.

tricked into burning more calories,” says Malin Svensson, founder and President of Nordic Walking USA. She suggests taking the stairs or strolling on sand to strengthen the legs and heart. Dreyer recommends ascending hills sideways (crossing one foot over the other) to engage new muscles and protect the calves and Achilles tendons. She also suggests walking backwards for 30 steps every five minutes during a 30-minute walk to reestablish proper posture.

Practical Tips

Push with poles. Compelling the body forward with Nordic walking poles can burn 20 to 46 percent more calories than regular walking, reports Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport. Svensson explains, “Applying pressure to the poles activates abdominal, chest, back and triceps muscles, which necessitates more oxygen and thereby raises the heart rate.” The basic technique is: plant, push and walk away.

Breathe. Belly breathing calms the parasympathetic nervous system, expands lung capacity and improves circulation. Inhale through the nose, fill the belly and expel through the mouth, advises Asheville, North Carolina, resident Katherine Dreyer, co-founder and CEO of ChiWalking. Try new techniques and terrain. “The body is smart and efficient. It must be constantly challenged in safe ways and

14

Practice moving meditation. To lighten a heavy mood, “Imagine your chest as a window through which energy, fresh air, sunshine, even rain, can pour into and through you as you walk,” says Dreyer. To ground a scattered mind, she suggests focusing on connecting one’s feet with the Earth.

Creative Tips Make fresh air a social affair. A group walk can boost performance levels of participants, says Dennis Michele, president of the American Volkssport Association, which promotes fun, fitness and friendship through noncompetitive, year-round walking events. Horowitz suggests strolling with friends and sharing sensory discoveries. “A fresh perspective can help tune you into the great richness of ordinary environments often overlooked,” she says. Ditch the distraction of electronic devices. Horowitz views walking texters as “hazards and obstacles, non-participants in the environment.” Australian researcher Siobhan Schabrun, Ph.D., reveals the science behind the sentiment in her recent University of Queensland study. The brain, she

Printed on recycled paper to protect the environment

found, prioritizes texting over walking, resulting in “slowing down, deviating from a straight line and walking like robots, with the arms, trunk and head in one rigid line, which makes falling more likely.” Walking a dog brings mutual benefits. Dr. John Marshall, chief oncologist at Georgetown University Hospital, in Washington, D.C., prescribes dog walking to his cancer patients, asserting it yields better outcomes than chemotherapy. For maximum enjoyment, strive to hit a stride, advises Carla Ferris, owner of Washington, D.C. dogwalking company Wagamuffin. Be a fanny pack fan. Fanny packs, unlike backpacks, which can disturb natural torso rotation, comfortably store identification, phone, keys and water, says Svensson. Ferris agrees: “Walks are so much more enjoyable hands-free.”

vv

Walk while you work. Much of the independent and collaborative work at Minneapolis finance company SALO emerges as employees walk slowly on ergonomic treadmill desks. “Being up, active and forward-moving on the treadmill benefits productivity,” says co-founder Amy Langer. Alternatively, consider investing in a cordless headset or standing desk. “Most anything you can do sitting, you can do standing, and supporting your own body weight is almost as beneficial as walking,” she says. A study reported in the journal Diabetologia suggests that sedentary time combined with periods of moderate-to-vigorous exercise poses a greater health risk than being gently active throughout the day. Dreyer’s mantra? “The body is wise. Listen when it says, ‘Get up and walk a bit.’” Lane Vail is a freelance writer in South Carolina. Connect at WriterLane.com.

If It Ain’t Broke ... by Perry Ekstrand, DDS, LVIF, The Swedish Dentist

D

entistry is not something the average person enjoys having done. A handful of patients who are in great shape come in and have their cleanings done and regular check-ups almost like a spa treatment, just to get nice, slick, clean teeth and to reassure themselves that everything is in good shape. Most people are anything from slightly anxious about dental treatment to asking “Where is the back door?!” Did you know 65% of people do not have a regular dentist? That means they wait until something hurts or breaks. Sometimes it hurts on and off for months before people will show up

at the office, when it is way too late. It reminds me of the story of the old hound dog lying on the front porch that howls every now and then all day long. The old farmer says it’s because he is lying on a nail and his neighbor says, “Why doesn’t he get up and move?” The farmer answers, “ Oh, it doesn’t hurt that much yet!” It is easy to put things off that do not cause pain or discomfort. If I had a dollar for every time I have heard the headline of this page I probably would have been retired. Now, not being broke is most often associated with no pain. The truth of the matter is that

dentistry is much like taking care of any type of machinery, such as a car. Regular service is needed and ought to be scheduled. If the oil light comes on in the car, most of us would pull over and not take the chance to get to the next service station. If we keep on going, the engine might freeze up and we are in for a very costly repair. “That cavity doesn’t really bother me, Doc, so let’s wait.” “Half the tooth is missing but because it doesn’t hurt yet, let’s wait awhile.” Hello—the oil light is on! And he keeps on driving! To fix a cavity with a filling will cost about $200. However, once this tooth starts to hurt, it could require a root canal, post/build-up, and a crown, which in most offices will run about $2,000-2,500. These days we might also recommended extraction, bone graft, implant and crown. Yes, you get a new tooth—but fixing it before it was really broke is the smartest alternative. Honestly, we can usually see if it is about to break and save you the grief and time an emergency causes. The “what would you rather do?” question is not difficult to answer, especially not in hindsight. It is not only the money but also more damage to the tooth, time in the chair, as well as time off work, etc. This scenario is, in a greater or lesser degree, applicable to old fillings, teeth with fracture lines, periodontal disease, loss of teeth/shifting of teeth, and so on. So, if you haven’t had a check up for a while, bite the bullet and call your dentist to get in for service. Get the oil changed, get some new spark plugs, and have him do a once-over to make sure everything is in order and you are good for another 50,000 chews. Study and Photography of the Human Aura by Paula Koger, BSN, MA, DOM

I

recently added to my professional assessment tools the Aura Scanning Device. I did this to help my clients experience the vast importance of the body/mind/spirit relationship. I am so glad to see my patients’ joy at seeing evidence of their energy body and how much of an impact it has on them to see the life force in their individual chakras. It is proving to be a great tool for showing clients the impact of the energy field and the ramifications for health and healing. An abundance of information is available from looking at the interpretation report of the auric field. What is an aura? For many people, the word “aura” means simply the subtle radiance of human beings. For scientists, it is a concrete, existing energy field that surrounds and fills matter and living creatures. The aura is formed by subtle color emissions which flow through and surround the body of a human being. These radiances can be seen by some people. Each color of the aura signifies a certain vibration which has different meanings. The aura is connected with the activity of the chakra (Sanskrit for “energy wheel”), and reflects the individual’s state of being. The colors of the aura provide information about the consciousness, emotions, thoughts,

18

abilities, and the vital energies of a person. The history of auras goes far back into the past. Christian mystics of the Middle Ages, painters, and artists of all times have depicted the aura in radiant, shining ray of lights around human being, animal, or plant. This has been researched and proven

scientifically in recent decades. Modern scientists measure the aura as an electromagnetic field in and around living matter. The first aura photo was made by the genius scientist Nicola Tesla in 1891. The Soviet Union did research in the 1960s. From 1975, the aura was measured and photographed in universities with great precision worldwide. Between 1970-1980, Guy Coggins, who could see auras, developed Kirlian photography. It was his wish to make awareness available for everybody. We are made up of atoms and energy, and everything has a

measureable frequency. A Russian scientist, Dr. Konstantin Korotkov, professor of physics at St. Petersburg State Technical University, has been studying the human energy field and is claiming that people can change the world simply by using their own energy. While this idea is not new, not many people have taken the time to scientifically go about proving such ideas, although the field of quantum physics has shed some powerful light on the topic over the years. Dr. Korotkov states that when we think positive and negative thoughts, each has a different impact on our surrounding environment. The human aura—a colored halo or force field surrounding the body—can be used, among other things, to assess your health or gain a greater awareness of yourself and others. The energy centers, known as chakras, are an integral part of the auric body. Each chakra has a specific color role to play in relation to the body functions. The chakras are autonomic regulatory centers and store our conflicts. By doing the aura analysis, we can make additional determinations about the needs of the patient and course of therapy. When the chakra centers are healed, health and vitality are advanced. Doesn’t it stand to reason that if we are made of energy, then energy should be given more of a priority and consideration in determining the needs for treatment? My husband David, a certified Qi Gong instructor, and I will be offering aura scans by appointment and as a special feature for your club or meeting events. As you can see from the picture, being together 20 years has had an impact on us. For more information, visit www. wealthofhealthcenter.com or call 941539-4232.

Unleashing Unlimited Potential with Panache Desai by April Thompson

B

orn into an East Indian family in London, England, Panache Desai grew up steeped in spiritual practices such as meditation. Though recognized by spiritual teachers as possessing a special gift, Desai rejected his spiritual foundation as a teenager, trading it for the excitement of London’s rave music scene of the 1990s before moving to America. It wasn’t until he was 22 and living in the Los Angeles neighborhood of Venice Beach that the pain of the way he had rejected his true inner nature reached a crescendo. In opening himself up to the possibility of the divine, Desai underwent a spiritual awakening that has led him to dedicate his life to helping others make their own journey from selfrejection to contentment. Unaffiliated with any one religious or spiritual tradition, Desai works with simple yet powerful principles of energy to help free people from self-imposed limitations and unlock their potential. His first book, Discovering Your Soul Signature: A 33-Day Path to Purpose, Passion & Joy, just released, is a departure from his earlier focus on creating meditation CDs and other audio recordings.

www.GoNaturalAwakenings.com

What was the key turning point in embracing your life’s calling?

Every time I would visit a spiritual teacher as a kid, they would say, “We’ve been waiting for you.” But I just wanted to be normal and was also skeptical; not every wellintentioned person is necessarily leading you home. I reached a turning point when I knew something had to change. I told myself that if this thing called God really exists and if I’m here to be a messenger, I have to experience it personally. In that moment, I began to undergo a transformation that culminated in a direct experience of the divine; an infinite ocean of energy vibrating with unconditional love. I felt part of what every spiritual teacher has been telling the world for thousands of years: that the true nature of reality is love, a love that expresses itself through all life forms. That experience allowed me to accept my role of helping others see and achieve their potential.

How does the universal energy you speak of affect us and how can we shift our dance with it?

We are vibrational beings inhabiting a vibrational universe. Yogis and

mystics from traditions throughout time have known this. The subtlest form of vibration is the soul, which is overlaid by the emotional, with the physical as the outermost layer of energy. Because the emotional layer can accumulate a density that enshrouds our soul’s light and potential, it’s important to address it. Energy is like water—it wants to flow and can shift states at any moment. Judging or rejecting any aspect of our genuine identity disrupts that flow of energy. For example, if instead of being available to feel your anger when it arises you repress or deny it, that accumulating emotion acquires density and over time, becomes rage. But if you can learn to slow down and lean into the emotion, the anger can wash through and out of you and energy again flows freely. By allowing ourselves to acknowledge, experience and release these emotions without judgment, we are clearing the obstacles to our authentic self, what I term one’s “soul signature”.

How is discovering our soul signature related to finding our calling?

The soul signature is our purest potential expressed. You can have a calling to be a writer, but unless you are connected to who you are at the deepest level, your writing won’t have the same impact. Accessing our soul signature is a process. We didn’t end up where we are overnight, and it can take time to get back to that place where we can express our truest selves by working with the techniques of energy transformation described in my book.

What are good first steps for someone newly initiating a spiritual practice?

The most powerful tool is our breath. Witnessing and honoring our breath in every moment allows us to transform every day into living meditation. Find author blogs on how individuals live their soul signature at Panache Desai.com. Connect with freelance writer April Thompson at AprilWrites. com.

Proverbs, Platitudes, and Practicality

T

here’s a lot of bad advice out there masquerading as inspiration. Oftentimes you see it in swirly platitudes over an Instagrammed sunset. These are the modern equivalent of your great-grandmother’s cross-stitch sampler, clogging your Facebook newsfeed instead of the parlor wall. This digital ephemera is full of proverbs like “Live each day as if it were your last.” Please. That isn’t at all practical. I assure you, if it were my last day on earth, I wouldn’t be going to work. Or washing dishes, or standing in a checkout line, or cleaning house, or talking to anyone who irritates me. But since I don’t know if today is The End, heigh-ho: It’s off to work I go. Somebody has to pay the bills. And wash the dishes, and clean the house, and buy the groceries, and communicate with the irritating. These things are part of daily, ordinary life. Of course you wouldn’t waste time on mundane minutiae if it were your last day on earth. That’s probably why we aren’t privy to that knowledge—because if we were, nothing would ever get done: “I have 644 days left on earth. I am not wasting a single moment paying bills, filing taxes, or scrubbing the bathroom.” Well, OK, that’s your call—but it’s going to be a long 644 days if

20

you’re sitting home in filth in the dark because your power’s been cut off, or spending your last days behind bars, doing time for tax evasion. There’s also “Be in the moment.” Listen. Not all moments are created equal. Some moments are better than others. There are plenty of unpleasant, tedious moments for which I’d rather not be fully present. I most certainly don’t wish to focus on and savor every last detail of them. It’s bad enough that I have to be there physically for some of them, but the least I can do for myself is not be altogether present in my head. Daydreaming and imagining are mental self-defenses, and I avail myself of them. That’s why books, TV shows, and movies exist. We might as well escape when we can. I also see a lot of “Follow your heart.” Oh, dear foolish people: Do you not know how much trouble that can get you into? The heart is indeed deceitful above all things. Remember being a teenager? Do you think it would have been a wise idea to do everything your heart told you to do? Sometimes you can’t tell your heart from your hormones, and that leads to trouble with a capital T. Think about the decisions you’ve made when your judgment was clouded by an excess of emotion. The phrase “It seemed like a good idea at the time” is often feebly uttered in the

aftermath of following what the heart told you to do. “I followed my heart” is just as lame an excuse as “The dog ate my homework.” The sensible edit is “Follow your heart—but use your head.” And then there’s “Dress for the job you want.” Well, if I did that, I’d never get out of my pajamas in the morning—which is often how I write when I’m sitting on my porch, which is exactly what I’d be doing if I had the job I want. Coming to work in your pajamas is frowned upon in most office settings. If I followed all the precepts above, you wouldn’t be reading this. If this were My Last Day On Earth, I most certainly wouldn’t be sitting at a computer, typing this column. As I write, it is a gloriously beautiful evening. Blue skies, green woods, singing birds, warm sunshine, cool breezes scented with white flowers: jasmine, gardenias, magnolias. I have the window open, which is almost cruel. Every cell of my being wants to be outside. I have already sat at a computer all day in my regular job. This is absolutely the last place I want to be at this moment. I do not want to be In This Moment. All of that loveliness outside is the Moment I want to Be In. If I Followed My Heart, I’d have been out there long ago. (At least I’m Dressed For the Job I Want.) But because this is a commitment and a responsibility—and a paycheck—I’m here and not there, Following My Heart to Be In This Moment As If It Were My Last Day On Earth. I don’t have a lot of advice for you. I could probably think of some if I weren’t in a hurry to get outside and enjoy this perfect late-spring evening. But on the fly, I can sum it up with this: Enjoy what you can, when you can. Live for tomorrow as well as today. Choose your moments. Use your head. And GO OUTSIDE. I know I am. Food the Easy Way Growing With Your Native Environment by David Y. Goodman

S

ometimes I like to go wandering off through the woods, looking for plants and animals rarely glimpsed in my suburban neighborhood. I’m rarely disappointed by what I find. I’ve spotted great stands of native pawpaws, stepped over pygmy rattlers, and watched tadpoles swim lazily through deep, spring-fed ponds in the middle of nowhere. If you drive across Florida, you’ll encounter a vast range of different environments. In one place you’ll find yourself beneath majestic live oaks, bearded with Spanish moss—in another, you’ll trudge through cattails in muck beneath open skies. A few miles away, the soil could be palmettocovered rusty sand beneath a resinous pine canopy. Go south and you’ll see mango trees as large as oaks. Head north and you’ll see massive pines still scarred by slashes created by turpentine harvesters now lost to history. Some people think they lack green thumbs because their plants died, and their mom’s/friend’s/grandpa’s/ accountant’s plants are doing great. How can this be? There are failures that are your fault, but there are also failures that relate directly to your native ecosystem. Your yard is a piece of your climate and is influenced greatly by the soil beneath. If you want to find what grows

www.GoNaturalAwakenings.com

easily, get a good local plant guidebook and go for a walk. I’ve been wandering my neighborhood for years and have gotten a really good idea of what will thrive and what will not. On my walks I’ve found hickories, wild plums, volunteer loquats, blackberries, elderberries, native persimmons, oaks, occasional pines and plenty of wild muscadines, to name a few. My native ecosystem is hardwood oak forest. Armed with this information, I now know what will grow in my yard with minimal care. Pecans are a cousin of hickory, so I can plant those. Wild plums? I can plant cultivated types. Loquats? Check. Blackberries? I planted thornless types in my yard and they’re producing with little care. Native persimmons? Great—I can plant the improved, large-fruited Japanese cultivars and expect success. Oaks? They’re cousins of chestnuts; so, I’m planting chestnuts. Pines? Well, pines like acid soil, generally—and so do blueberries. Wild muscadines? I planted improved types with large fruit, and they grow with almost no care. Now obviously, since it supports a wide variety of forest species, my neighborhood has decent soil. But what if your neighborhood is in the middle of a patch of brutally hot, sandy scrubland? What if even the palmettos look like they’re suffering? It may not be easy to grow what you want to grow, but chances are, there are still plenty of delicious

plants that will grow under your local conditions. God has designed nourishing plants to grow under conditions that would kill the average cabbage. Again, look around! I’ve had people say things like, “I live in swamp—nothing will grow here because it drowns!” Not true. In swamp, you can grow malanga, taro, Chinese water chestnuts, elderberries, duck potatoes, etc. And check out the native plants. Can you identify anything with edible or useful relatives? In sandy and dry scrubland, I’ve seen persimmons, pawpaws, hawthorns, wild blueberries, spurge nettles, and prickly pear thriving together. Why not plant improved versions or cousins of some of these plants? The native prickly pear is edible but hard to process because of the spines, so instead, plant its cousin, the thornless “nopale cactus,” and you’ll be enjoying tasty no-work cactus pads. If you see wild blueberries, you can bet that cultivated types will probably do fine. Spurge nettles are cousins of cassava and chaya, two very good vegetables for our area. Pomegranates might be another option, since they love arid ground. Keep your eyes open and follow the design of your native environment, keep experimenting, and above all, keep growing your own food. It’s often a lot easier than you think. Would you like to find easy-togrow edible plants for your place? Or get answers to your gardening questions? Visit David’s nursery booth at the 326 Community Market in Ocala every Thursday from 3-7pm. Address: 2250 NE 70th St, Ocala, Florida. The Bionic

COACH High-Tech Boosts Healthy Routines by Linda Sechrist

W

hen President John F. Kennedy said in 1961 that the U.S. should commit to sending a man to the moon and return him safely by the end of the decade, few suspected the bounty of technological spinoffs that such National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) space missions would yield. Today, many of NASA’s research advancements, as well as technologies developed outside the space program, are put to good use in everyday life, including in fitness workouts. ABI Research, a technology market intelligence company, revealed the growing popularity of consumer health and wellness technologies in its latest market projections for wearable, health-related devices. Estimates are that 80 million wearable monitoring devices, including heart monitors and biosensors that read body temperature and motion, will be sold by 2016. When Clint, a global market research firm, conducted its most recent Fitness and Technology Survey, its findings showed technology at work. Based on 745 online interviews with people in seven countries, 72 percent of exercisers embraced some type of technology, including smartphone apps, to support their fitness routines two or more times a week. In recent years, amateur and

22

professional athletes have increasingly benefited from technological advances that help them chart, improve upon, and customize their fitness routines. Tracking fitness progress and weight loss is now just clicks away with personal devices such as a Wi-Fi scale, which accurately measures weight, body fat percentage, and body mass index. Online graphs chart the individual’s progress. New digital wrist blood pressure and heart monitors now allow exercise enthusiasts to measure blood pressure and heart rate themselves, wherever they are, helping ensure they are not exceeding the safety parameters of their fitness programs. User-friendly digital pocket pedometers and wireless activity-during-sleep wristbands both work in conjunction with a downloaded app to allow self-monitoring. Exercisers can track steps, distances walked cycled or swum, calories burned, total active minutes, and how long and how well they sleep. In some U.S. fitness centers, members have an option of working with an automated, virtual personal trainer. This almost-do-it-yourself approach to professionally guided fitness begins with a survey of an individual’s lifestyle and goals to create a personalized fitness regimen. Each time exercisers go to the center, they insert a key into a “smart

trainer,” generating the day’s 30-minute customized workout. The technology focuses primarily on helping clients manage weight and maintain muscle. Other technologies, such as medical-grade, pneumatic [air] compression boot systems, are facilitating at-home recovery for hip and knee surgery patients and quicker muscle recovery for serious athletes. Air-filled chambers remain inflated as pressure cycles sequentially move from the foot up the leg. The cycles flush out waste and replenish blood supplies to the muscles. More complex bio-analyzing systems retrieve feedback from the body’s electromagnetic fields, the multiple energy meridians and the frequencies of the body’s cells and organs. “Such systems are largely used by chiropractors, naturopaths, physical therapists and acupuncturists,” says Loran Swensen, CEO of Innergy Development, which owns AO Scan, maker of the Magnetic Resonance Bio-Analyzer. For people who struggle with traditional workouts or physical limitations, whole-body vibration technology may be a solution. “When you stand on the oscillating platform, the body reacts to the vertical vibratory stimulus with an involuntary muscle contraction; depending on the speed, muscles can react up to 23 times per second,” advises Linda Craig, co-owner of Circulation Nation, in Greer, South Carolina. Similar platforms are becoming commonplace in chiropractic clinics. Consumer applications of medical devices have led to the home use of additional sophisticated technologies like laser therapy. Successfully used for more than 30 years in Europe to treat trauma, inflammation, overuse injuries and cosmetic issues, as well as to provide pain relief and healing, some forms have recently been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. With 129,397,925 gym members worldwide according to a recent International Health, Racquet & Sportsclub Association report, it’s safe to predict that consumer demand ensures even more significant technological advances are in our near future. Linda Sechrist is a senior staff writer for Natural Awakenings.
