healthbriefs Local Toxins Increase Risk of Autism onfirming previous findings, a large study from the Univer-
C
sity of Chicago has found that autism is linked to toxic environmental exposure. The research examined data from nearly a third of the U.S. population, which showed that both autism spectrum disorders and intellectual disabilities increased as exposure increased in region-by-region testing. The research measured clusters of autism incidence together with exposure rates in different counties and states across the country. The areas with greater environmental toxin exposures had significantly increased autism rates. The correlation was significant among both boys and girls, but stronger among girls. Proximity to urban areas also increased autism incidence. For every 1 percent increase in urbanization, there was about a 3 percent rise in autism and intellectual disabilities. Influential toxins include pesticides, plasticizers, lead and pharmaceuticals.
Wild Thyme Kills Breast Cancer Cells study published in the Nutrition and Cancer
A
Journal reveals that the herb thyme is more than a cooking spice. Scientists tested a methanol extract of Thymus serphyllum—also referred to as wild thyme—on two types of breast cancer cells and found that it was able to kill them in laboratory testing. The testing also found the extract to be safe for healthy normal breast cells. The researchers state that wild thyme may provide the means for a promising natural cancer treatment.
Body Symmetry Correlates with Male Strength esearch from Germany’s University of Göttingen has de-
R
termined that men with greater body symmetry also have greater strength. The scientists sampled 69 heterosexual, right-handed adult men, measuring handgrip strength as a scientifically recognized means for determining power and strength, as well as fluctuating asymmetry (FA), a measure of subtle, random deviations from perfect bilateral symmetry in traits that are typically symmetrical in the general population. FA was evaluated by measuring and comparing 12 body feature traits on the right and left sides, including breadth of the hand, wrist and elbow; finger length; and facial features. After eliminating the effects of body mass index, the researchers determined that the men with the greatest physical symmetry were stronger. Facial symmetry in males was associated with greater intelligence and better information-processing efficiency at age 83.

Register Receipts Low Risk for BPA
R
esearch from the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health has determined that handling cash register receipts, common in credit card transactions, can increase exposure of the hormone disruptor Bisphenol A (BPA), but that exposure is well within limits considered safe when the receipts are handled under normal conditions. The researchers tested 121 people exposed to the synthetic chemical through their skin and found their average BPA urinary excretion levels averaged 2.6 micrograms (mcg) per liter. The researchers then had test subjects handle thermal paper three times every five minutes, simulating a store cashier’s handling of receipts. The researchers found those who handled the thermal paper during the simulation test had an average increase in their BPA urinary excretions of just under 0.2 mcg per liter per kilogram of body weight. The researchers noted that this was still 25 times lower than the European Food Safety Authority’s proposed temporary tolerable daily intake of 5 mcg per liter per kilogram of body weight per day. Primary sources of BPA exposure are plastics used in water bottles and many other consumer goods.
healthbriefs Hatha Yoga Boosts Brainpower esearch from Wayne State University, in Detroit, has
R
found that hatha yoga can significantly improve cognitive health in as little as two months. Researchers tested 118 adults with an average age of 62 years. One group engaged in three,hour-long hatha yoga classes per week for eight weeks, while the other group did stretching and strengthening exercises for the same duration. The participants underwent cognitive testing before and after the eight-week period. At the end of the trial, the hatha yoga group showed significant improvements in cognition compared to the other group. The yoga group also recorded shorter reaction times, greater accuracy in high-level mental functions, and better results in working memory tests. Source: Journal of Gerontology
Acupuncture Treats Prostate Enlargement esearch from China has found that a combina-
R
tion of acupuncture and moxibustion, a form of heat therapy in which dried plant materials are burned on or near the surface of the skin to warm and invigorate the inner flow of qi, or energy, can effectively reduce the symptoms of benign prostate enlargement. Researchers tested 128 patients with prostate enlargement for three months, dividing them into two groups. One group was given acupuncture and moxibustion; the other took a traditional Chinese herbal medication for prostate enlargement called Qianliekangi. The patients’ prostate symptoms were tested using the International Prostate Symptom Score, maximum urine flow rate, and residual urine tests. At the study’s end, the patients given the acupuncture/moxibustion treatment reported significantly reduced levels in all three tests—calculated at an 89 percent total effective rate—compared to the herbal medication group.
Antioxidant-Rich Berries Thwart Alzheimer’s n international team of scientists has confirmed
A
that consuming berries such as strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, blackcurrants, mulberries and raspberries can significantly reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. Blueberries, in particular, were found to be associated with increased memory and learning. Researchers from Washington State University, the U.S. National Institutes of Health, India’s Annamalai University, and Oman’s Sultan Qaboos University’s College of Medicine and Health Sciences reviewed two decades’ worth of research relating to consuming berries and dementia. They found that the many biochemicals contained in berries provide antioxidant protection to neurons and prevent the formation of beta-amyloid fibrils found in the brains of Alzheimer’s disease patients.

Pain and Depression Ebb with Flotation Therapy
N
ew research from Sweden has found that flotation therapy helps increase sleep quality, reduce pain, and relieve anxiety and depression. Flotation therapy, sometimes called isolation therapy, consists of floating in a tank of water with minimized interruptions and sensory stimuli. Researchers from Karlstad University divided 65 people into two groups. One group underwent 12 45-minute flotation therapy sessions for seven weeks, while the other group did not. Both groups were given a battery of physiological and psychological tests before and after the treatment period. The therapy was conducted using three commercial flotation therapy centers that provided sensory isolation systems to promote relaxation as part of the treatment. Compared to the control group, the flotation therapy group reported significant decreases in pain, anxiety, depression, and stress levels, and better sleep quality. The flotation group’s average depression scores went from 4.42 to 2.25, while the control group’s scores barely budged. The worst pains among the flotation group dropped from 64 to 40 on the scale.

globalbriefs Solar Harvest
New Technology Makes Windows Power Producers
S
SolarWindow Technologies, Inc.
olarWindow Technologies’ new window coatings are a “first of its kind” technology that could turn the buildings we live and work in into self-sufficient, mini power stations. They can generate electricity on see-through glass and flexible plastics with colored tints popular in skyscraper glass. The coating can be applied to all four sides of tall buildings, generating electricity using natural and artificial light conditions and even shaded areas. Its organic materials are so ideal for low-cost, high-output manufacturing that the technology is already part of 42 product patent applications. When applied to windows on towers, it’s expected to generate up to 50 times the power of conventional rooftop solar systems while delivering 15 times the environmental benefits. For example, a single SolarWindow installation can avoid the amount of carbon emissions produced by vehicles driving about 2.75 million miles per year, compared to 180,000 miles for conventional rooftop systems.
Sustainable Shopping Tips Smart Choices Help All of Us
T
he buy local movement and popularity of local farmers’ markets continue to grow, but we can do even better when it comes to sustainable shopping. A recent Greendex.com survey on environmental impacts of consumer behaviors in 18 countries reports that more Americans are eating local and organic foods and say they’re going to consume less meat and bottled water. Nevertheless, we continue to eat the most processed and packaged foods and the fewest fruits and vegetables of all the countries surveyed. Evidently, we need to literally put our money where our mouths are. The Greendex survey cites several basic ways to make our diets more sustainable. These include eating more vegetables and less beef and lamb; participating and supporting community supported agriculture and fishery initiatives; economizing meal planning; and storing food properly in the refrigerator to maximize space and freshness periods. When grocery shopping, peruse the perimeter aisles first, where whole foods are stocked, instead of the interior shelves, which typically comprise processed foods, according to MotherEarthLiving.com. Durrant lauds “greener, fairer and healthier practices, such as community gardening or cookery classes,” plus “those that change the rules of the game through campaigns or lobbying to coordinate and facilitate activities of other groups.” Supporting food and farming management that’s independent, cooperative and welcomes volunteers, for example, is highly beneficial.

Farm Therapy Veterans Heal Through Agriculture
O
f the 19.6 million veterans in the United States alone, approximately 3.6 million have a service-related disability, 7.6 percent are unemployed, and they collectively make up 13 percent of the adult homeless population, according to the Independent Voter Network. Organizations worldwide are helping veterans heal their wounds through farming and agriculture. The goal is to create a sustainable food system by educating them to be organic vegetable producers, providing training and helping families rebuild war-torn lives. Eat the Yard, in Dallas, Texas, was founded by Iraq War veterans James Jeffers and Steve Smith to cultivate fresh produce in community gardens. The two began organic farming in their own backyards for both therapeutic and financial reasons, and then slowly began to build more gardens in their community. They now sell their produce to local restaurants and businesses. The Farmer Veteran Coalition (FVC) is working with veterans across the U.S. to transition them into agriculture. The coalition partners veterans with mentors experienced in farming and business, matches them with agriculture-related job opportunities, and organizes equipment donations in Iowa and California. FVC is helping former members of the armed forces in 48 states. Source: FoodTank.com/ news/2014/11/veterans-day

Natural Ways to Keep Crawling Critters Away
W
ith picnics and barbecues on the calendar, summer is a time for indoor/outdoor entertaining with family, friends and neighbors. To keep invading ants away, hosts can use natural materials, many of which can be found in the kitchen, instead of chemical products that may be hazardous to humans, pets and wildlife. Natural lines of defense. Applying ground cinnamon or mixing some of the spice with sugar, cloves and water into a thin paste and using a cotton swab to dab it in cracks and around doors and windowsills outside the house where ants might enter can be effective. The aroma is too strong for them, so they’ll either succumb or turn away. Another method recommended by the Mother Nature Network is to clean floors and countertops with a solution of one cup each of vinegar and water, with the option to enhance it with 15 drops of lemon oil. Try a simple spray. An organic insecticide for application in grassy locations, applied to the legs and sides of the picnic table or chairs, can help reduce intrusion by ants and other pests. ChasingGreen.org suggests pouring one-anda-half cups of water into a blender and adding two bulbs of garlic. Liquefy the ingredients to a smooth blend, strain out the remaining pieces of garlic, dilute the mixture with about a gallon of water and fill a spray bottle. Organic pest control. Some manufacturers specialize in eco-friendly products, including the Extremely Green Gardening Company (ExtremelyGreen. com) that offers diatomaceous earth, Hasta La Vista Ant! and Bug Shooter insecticide. Other chemical-free bug traps can be found at many hardware stores. Avoid temptation. Keep food container lids and boxes tightly closed indoors and keep food covered as much as possible outdoors. Taking natural preventive steps now is timely because many ant species are highly active in early summer as they seek to increase the food stores for their colonies.

Quit Feeling Guilty and Start Composting! by David Y. Goodman
Due to space restrictions, David The Good’s column has been on a hiatus; however, thanks to the kind sponsorship of the folks at the 326 Community Market in Ocala, he’s back. Thank you to all who called in and requested his return. You got your wish!
D
oes the word “composting” fill you with guilt? Do you remember back when you were going to build the perfect bin? Or that great thing you saw on composting with worms that you’ve always wanted to do but never did? Or maybe you have an expensive cranked compost tumbler sitting in your backyard with nothing in it but a few dry coffee grounds and a blackened banana peel? Composting is one of those things we know we should do, like buckling our safety belts, staying in school, and recycling … yet more often than not, we still throw away our food scraps and yard waste rather than returning them to the ground. It’s time to stop feeling guilty and start making changes. No matter who you are or where you live, you can compost. The great thing is that it doesn’t require bins, tumblers, kitchen canisters, or any other infrastructure. All you need to do is let things rot. This year, I wrote a little book on composting that I hope will change a lot of minds on the topic while taking away guilt from those who have suffered under their landfill-stuffing sins for too long. The book’s title? Compost Everything: The Good Guide to Extreme Composting. As I write this article, it’s
12
the #1 bestseller in Amazon’s gardening section. One reason I believe my book is so popular is because it relieves folks from the pressure of composting. What kind of pressure? How about the need to turn piles? Or the need to get your carbon/nitrogen ratios perfect? Or the need to build a nice bin? I wrote Compost Everything so folks wouldn’t worry so much about making perfect compost and instead just start returning everything organic to the ground safely in order to feed their plants and reduce the amount of potential soil food that is going into landfills rather than back into the soil. So—how can you start doing that right now, without a bin? Let’s take a look. Composting With Ease If you have a yard, just start saving your kitchen scraps in a lidded container. I use a five-gallon bucket because we go through a lot of garden produce on our homestead. You can throw in meat, junk mail (just not glossy pieces or the plastic window in bills), bones, scrap paper, moldy bread, and whatever else you like until you’ve got a good amount in there. Heck—maybe this is the time to clean our your fridge. Then, just go outside and dig a hole a couple of feet deep, then empty the bucket in your pit and cover the mess with soil. Voila—you’ve returned all that material to the ground. As long as it’s deep enough and covered up well, animals will leave it alone, but the roots of your trees and plants will find that delicious organic matter with no problem. In fact, I’ve used this method to grow Seminole pumpkins and watermelons in the hot, dry sand of my front
yard. I dug a good-sized pit, dumped in everything from beef stew to coffee grounds, ashes, and chunks of rotten wood, then filled in the pit with some soil and planted seeds on top. The vines that emerged needed no additional fertilization and really enjoyed eating all the stuff we’re often told we “can’t” compost. In its simplest form, composting is just a natural process of decay. When you throw out your food scraps and paper scraps, you’re exporting potential soil fertility from your property. When you bury them in your yard, you’re increasing the richness of your land. Pretty simple. Of course, if you want perfect compost for your garden you can set up a bin and make nice, brown crumbly humus from your scraps; however, you’ll likely do just as well burying kitchen scraps beneath your beds and planting on top of them. I know the earthworms love the fresh material, and your plants don’t mind, either. If you live in an apartment or a dorm, why not ask around and see if there are any gardeners in your circle of friends that might appreciate your scraps? If not, you can always just pick a tree in the woods and dump them there. Throw a few leaves over the scraps and no one will even know you were there, but the tree will appreciate it. In Compost Everything, I share a lot more composting ranging from easy to crazy, including how to make your own fish emulsion, how to completely compost fallen trees, how to compost pet droppings and more. You’ll find that book on Amazon, along with my book Create Your Own Florida Food Forest. It’s time to quit feeling guilty and start composting! Would you like to find easy-to-grow edible plants for your neighborhood? Or get answers to your gardening questions? Visit David’s Florida Food Forests nursery booth at the 326 Community Market in Ocala every Thursday from 3-7pm at 2250 NE 70th St., Ocala, Florida—or find him at the Union Street Farmer’s Market every Wednesday afternoon from 4-7pm. Yoga for the Bros
Men Find it Builds All-Around Fitness by Meredith Montgomery
F
ive thousand years ago, most yoga teachers and students were men. Today, of the 15 million American practitioners, fewer than a third are males. However, the ratio of male practitioners has increased in the past decade, with teachers in some areas reporting a balanced ratio of men and women in their classes. Yet, even as professional athletes add yoga to their training regimen, Power Yoga founder Bryan Kest, in Santa Monica, California, points out, “To the mainstream man, yoga is not masculine. You see men in ballet performances, but it doesn’t mean men are attracted to ballet.” Eric Walrabenstein, founder of Yoga Pura, in Phoenix, agrees. “To achieve the widest adoption of the practice, we need to shift away from the notion that yoga is a physical exercise primarily for women, to one that embraces yoga’s holistic physical, mental and emotional benefits for anyone regardless of gender.”
Life Benefits
Physically, yoga can complement traditional workout routines by increasing flexibility, strength and balance, and also play a role in pain management and injury prevention. Kest says, “Yoga is the best fitness-related activity I know of, but the tone and shapeliness that results is a byproduct. The focus is on balance and healing.” He encourages students to
14
challenge themselves without being extreme. “The harder you are on anything, the faster you wear it out. If our objective is to both last as long and feel as good as possible, it makes no sense to push hard. Instead we should be gentle and sensitive in our practice.” Men would benefit by learning how to stop what they’re doing and breathe, says Kreg Weiss, co-founder of My Yoga Online (now on Gaiam TV), from Vancouver. He emphasizes the importance of modifying poses as needed during classes and notes that doing so takes vulnerability that doesn’t come naturally to most men. “If you find yourself shaking while holding downward dog, allow yourself to go down to the floor without worrying about what others will think.” Societal pressures of masculinity sometimes dictate who a man thinks he should be. Breaking through such barriers enables a man to be relaxed with himself and unafraid, as “It changes what happens off the mat, too,” observes Weiss. Bhava Ram (née Brad Willis), founder of the Deep Yoga School of Healing Arts, in San Diego, points out, “Men need yoga because it helps us deal better with stress and emotional issues. When we have more inner balance, we show up better for ourselves, spouses, friends and loved ones.”
Therapeutic Benefits
As modern science begins
to document yoga’s healing effects, it’s being used in treatment plans for conditions ranging from addiction and trauma to multiple sclerosis and cancer. Ram was a Type A aggressive reporter and network war correspondent and, “Like many men with similar personality types, I struggled with anger and control issues. I had no interest in yoga; it seemed strange and unnecessary to me,” he recalls. After a broken back that ended his journalism career, failed surgery, advanced cancer, and dependence on prescription drugs, he found himself facing death. Inspired by his young son to take control of his health, he embraced yoga as a healing way forward. After two years of dedicated practice, Ram says he turned 80 pounds of physical weight and 1,000 pounds of emotional toxins into gratitude, forgiveness and loving kindness. “I left 90 percent of my back pain behind and the cancer is gone.” Kest explains that yoga’s significant therapeutic value is based on its capacity to reduce stress and its effects, while teaching and strengthening techniques to cope with it. “Ninety percent of the stress we put on our bodies originates in the stress we put on our minds,” he says. “If you want to be healthy, you have to look at mental fitness, not just the size of your biceps or the strength of your cardiovascular system. It’s calmness and peacefulness of mind that matter.”
Tips for First-Timers
Weiss urges men new to yoga to take time to find the right class. “When men who can’t touch their toes walk into some preconceived notion of a class full of women Om-ing, they feel apprehensive and the experience does them no service.” Regardless of one’s state of fitness, it’s important to start slowly, with a focus on the breath. “If you don’t have a good foundation, you can miss a lot of yoga’s benefits. Seek teachers with a solid yoga background educated in anatomy.” Walrabenstein recommends that first-timers find a class that meets their expectations of targeted benefits.
“Remember that yoga is supposed to serve you in enabling your best life possible. If for you that means a vigorous workout, go for it. Even the most physically-oriented yoga styles can carry profound mental and spiritual benefits—and can lead to a deeper, more rewarding practice over time.” Arrive early to class to get settled and talk with the teacher about physical status, potential limitations, or other concerns. Yoga is practiced barefoot and clothing should be loose and comfortable, allowing the body to sweat and move. Walrabenstein reminds men to have fun. “Yoga, like anything, can be awkward at first. Make space for your learning curve and remember, no one in class is judging you.” Meredith Montgomery, a certified yoga teacher, publishes Natural Awakenings of Mobile/Baldwin, AL (HealthyLivingHealthyPlanet.com).

Yoga Helps Vets Heal
Yoga is regarded as a promising treatment or adjunctive therapy for addressing symptoms associated with trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Numerous studies indicate that veterans who practice yoga (including postures, breath work, guided visualization and affirmation) can better cope with PTSD and other emotional challenges, and realize enhanced physical and mental stability. Former war correspondent Bhava Ram founded Warriors for Healing (W4H). W4H and its foundation partners provide resources for veterans and their families to implement yoga’s transformational lifestyle practices, including nutrition, philosophy, breath work and postures. Studies from leading institutions including the University of California, Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital have shown that these practices can change the organism that is us down to the level of our genomes. “We’re not stuck where we are,” says Ram. “My own history illustrates this,
and I’ve seen many others heal from remarkable challenges.” Bootstrap, an online yoga system specific to the challenges of military duty-related stress, has distributed 70,000 yoga sessions to troops and veterans and their families since 2013. Founder Eric Walrabenstein, a former U.S. Army infantry officer, notes that the program is curriculum-driven. Beyond breath and body postures, its 10-week structure makes it accessible to those who wouldn’t necessarily step into a studio. “The multimedia program has been clinically proven to derail chronic stress caused by military service in less than one hour per day,” he says. Bootstrap is a stress-management program that happens to use yoga techniques. “Many men tend to selfselect themselves out of the practice,” he says. “We wanted to avoid that as well as the idea that yoga is primarily about postures, when that’s only a small fraction of what the practice is.” Visit WarriorsForHealing.org and BootstrapUSA.com.

Brain Maker A Book Review by James E. Lemire, M.D.
L
ast month, my wife and I attended a PBS television taping as invited guests of Dr. David Perlmutter. The title of the program was “Brain Maker,” after Dr. Perlmutter’s newest book which came out in print April 28, 2015, published by Little, Brown, and Company. The subject of our article last month was “Time for Spring Cleaning Your Gut?” I thought it be a good time to review a book related to that topic. Dr. David Perlmutter is a worldrenowned board-certified neurologist as well as a board-certified nutritionist. His previous best-seller, Grain Brain, was about the hazards of grains in our diet causing neurological problems. He firmly established the gut-mind connection. In the introduction to Brain Maker, Dr. Perlmutter notes that “advances in preventing, treating and curing
debilitating neurological ailments across the lifecycle—from autism to attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), to migraine headaches, depression, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s— are virtually nonexistent. Brain Maker is about a dazzling new science and how you can take advantage of it for your own health. “Leading edge science from the most respected institutions around the world is discovering that to an extraordinary degree, brain health and, on the flip side, brain diseases, are dictated by what goes on in your gut. That’s right: what’s taking place in your intestines today is determining your risk for any number of neurological conditions.” This drives home the point I made last month of why it is important to do “spring cleaning on your gut on

a regular basis.” We reviewed the Institute of Functional Medicine’s Five “R” program to treat a toxic gut and to restore a healthy balance. Dr. Perlmutter introduces us to our microbiome. “These roughly 100 trillion invisible creatures— microbes—cover your insides and outside, thriving in your mouth, nose, ears, intestines, genitalia, and on every inch of your skin. Scientists so far have discovered 10,000 species of microbes. This complex internal ecology that thrives within us is called the microbiome.” In the initial chapter of the book, Dr. Perlmutter poses a 20-question quiz to help us identify our risk factors. He spends the rest of the book explaining those risk factors and how to overcome them. This is an exciting revolutionary book that I encourage you to pick up and read. Stay tuned to your local PBS channel and look for the newest broadcast called ”Brain Maker” by Dr. David Perlmutter. A major focus of Lemire Clinic is community education. All are welcome to participate in any of our upcoming events. Visit www. LemireClinic.com, call 352-2919459, or attend our free New Patient Education seminar the first Monday of every month at 6pm.

The Gut-Mind Connection
What is the most eye-opening information about the roles played by gut organisms?
More than 100 trillion bacteria live in our gut. Plus, there are viruses, yeast species and protozoa. When we factor in their genetic material, it means that an astonishing 99 percent of the DNA in our body is bacterial. Buried Treasure
I
usually know in advance when a column is going to turn into a two-part series. I will realize as I’m writing it that I cannot possibly tell this story in 800 words, so I’ll write toward a “To be continued” ending. Last month, I thought I was done after I finished the column on my grandfathers and their World War Two experiences. I thought I’d told the story and would be moving on to a new theme for June. Then I found more treasures. The ongoing excavation of my grandmother’s house continues. We are trying to get things in better order for her so she can live more safely and comfortably in her own home. Let us just say that she is an excellent archivist, having preserved everything, and I do mean literally everything, in its original state for the almost 60 years she has lived there. It has been like an archaeological dig through the strata of decades, sifting through the relics of closets and cabinets and dresser drawers. I told last month how, in one of those dresser drawers, we found my grandfather’s Army handkerchief tied up around a bundle of European coins and a ring he brought home from the war, and how thrilled I was to have something from his past because he hadn’t been one to keep much. A few weeks later, I found something just as incredible. One morning, I came across a bag tucked behind a chair. It had been
18
behind a pile of other things we’d been sorting, and I’d forgotten about it for months. I vaguely remembered my grandmother saying it had important papers in it. That was an understatement. Among many other documents, I found my grandfather’s military discharge papers from World War Two. I’d never even imagined she had these. Only recently, someone had said we needed these papers as proof that she was the widow of a veteran, and I’d thought, Good luck finding them, if they’re even in this house... I assumed if they still existed, they might be in a desk I hadn’t gotten to organizing yet. When I started going through that bag, I wasn’t even thinking about these papers. And yet, there they were. My mother said she wished she had her father’s papers, but she thought she remembered her mother saying they didn’t have them. I thought this was odd, as my grandmother had been very organized and wasn’t one to lose things, especially important things, but I said I was sure we could track down a copy somehow. That didn’t prove to be necessary. A few hours later, we went to the bank to look for a property deed in my other grandmother’s safe deposit box. What did I find in there? The other grandfather’s military discharge papers from World War Two. I had not been looking for either set of papers. In one case, I hadn’t
been looking for anything at all, merely organizing, and in the other case, we were looking for something else completely. And in both cases, I found what I thought we did not have. It gets eerier: As it turns out, they were in several of the same battles and campaigns. I’d always thought they spent the war in different places, but there it was on both sets of papers: North Africa. Naples-Foggia. Rome-Arno. Rhineland. These country boys from Alabama and Virginia were across the world and in the same places at the same times. It’s possible, though not probable, that they even crossed paths—although to my knowledge they didn’t meet for almost 30 years after they got home from the war. The rifleman and the chauffeur got home from the war within two weeks of each other. In fact, one was honorably discharged from the service on the other’s birthday—which happened to be Halloween. Think that’s spooky? Not until I got into bed on the night I found the papers did I think about what the date was. It was May 8, 2015. The 70th anniversary of V-E Day. I didn’t set out to write a two-part series on my grandfathers. I also didn’t think at the time how appropriate it was to write this in May and June—for Memorial Day and Father’s Day. But, like finding both my grandfathers’ WWII military discharge papers within hours of each other, without looking for them, on the 70th anniversary of V-E Day, there is a time and a season for everything under the sun ... even if it hasn’t seen the sun for years. Gentlemen—and I mean that in the truest sense of the word—if you had a hand from the beyond in this treasure hunt, that was well-played and impeccably timed. I salute you. And I still do even if you didn’t. ©2015 Melody Murphy. Melody Murphy is enjoying the treasure hunt.

MOVING BEYOND SURVIVAL Our True Identity Surpasses Any Disease by Eric Nelson

“
et down off your cross.” Harsh words, especially coming from a longtime hospital chaplain when the woman she was addressing had just learned she was cancer-free. Regardless, “Within two minutes, she started retelling the story of her diagnosis, surgery and chemo,” recounted Debra Jarvis, affectionately known as “The Irreverent Reverend”, during a TEDMED talk in Washington, D.C. “She was using words like suffering, agony, struggle... and ended with, ‘I felt crucified.’” It was then that Jarvis asked this woman to do what would likely require more of her than anything she’d done before. Over the years, Jarvis has observed the tendency for us to identify ourselves by our wounds as “survivors” of something that does not and should not define us. “What if people decided to claim their trauma as an experience, instead of taking it on as an identity?” she queries. “Maybe it would be the start of defining ourselves by who we have become and who we are becoming.” As Jarvis well knows, there are, in her words, “powerful forces” pushing us to do just the opposite. In 2005, she found herself in the same position as her friend, having recovered from cancer and trying to sort out what it all meant. “We don’t all have to start a foundation or write a book,” to

claim meaning for ourselves, she says. “Maybe we make one small decision that can bring about a big change.” For some, this has meant exchanging a disease-prone view of themselves for a more inspired outlook. Too often, though, mustering the humility to adopt such a perspective can seem just as difficult as climbing down from whatever tortuous experience we’re clinging to. Yet, it’s essential. As those familiar with the Bible know, a central event of Jesus’ life, his crucifixion, was followed by his even more compelling resurrection, a term that thought leader Mary Baker Eddy describes as “spiritualization of thought; a new and higher idea of immortality, or spiritual existence; material belief yielding to spiritual understanding.” The good news is that such transformation is not exclusive, but available to anyone. Whether it’s at the urging of a chaplain or another counselor or our own divine inspiration that’s encouraging us to move on, we owe it to ourselves to begin discovering who and what we really are. Women’s Conditions and Hope for Relief by Dr. Michael J. Badanek, DC, BS, CNS, DACBN, DCBCN, MSGR/CHEV
I
n my practice, day after day, the histories given to me by female patients are so strikingly similar that one would think most if not all of them were related to each other. This, however, is not the case; it’s a growing pattern. Unfortunately, when it comes to mainstream medicine, women are being pigeon-holed into groups and are not being taken seriously, or worse yet, are being totally misdiagnosed and therefore mistreated by my medical brethren. Let’s take a look at just a few examples in this quagmire of confusion and utter frustration. Let’s start with women who suffer with pre-menstrual issues of severe cramping, heavy bleeding, and PMS (pre-menstrual syndrome) before and or during the first few days of menses. These women all have the dreaded monthly issues of disruption of their daily life activities or even total debilitation with the onset of the menstrual cycle. I find that most of these unfortunate patients are being treated by standard protocols from family physicians or gynecologists: birth control pills and analgesics. This does absolutely nothing in treating the cause of the problem, but just masks the symptoms. Unfortunately, in time this leads to more serious problems in the vast majority of cases, ranging from PCOS (poly-cystic ovarian syndrome) to endometriosis to ovarian cancer. Menstrual conditions are totally treatable and reversible with alternative functional medicine. Giving a woman birth control pills to mask the symptoms of her condition(s) may be giving her a death sentence as to the secondary side effects of estrogen therapy. You see, the
20
body is not deficient in estrogen, but is severely deficient in specific nutrients. Today, most if not all pharmaceutical forms of estrogen are derived from mare urine. That’s right, ladies: Esterdiole or one of the other two estrogen components come from horses. The unfortunate conclusion to this type of therapy can be very caustic to your body with such side effects as blood clots, hypothyroidism, psychological manifestations, hormonal shifts with increased production of testosterone, and finally cancer. The simple matter of the solution is that the ravaged female body is so nutrient depleted that it presents the above mentioned symptoms which perpetually repeat month after month, year after year, until greater conditions occur later in life due to the neglect of proper nutrients. I have had women diagnosed with large unilateral (one-sided) or bilateral ovarian cysts through trans-vaginal ultrasound; and, with proper protocols/ workup, totally resolve these cysts and all the devastating symptoms within three to six months. Remember that ovarian cysts are the precursors to ovarian cancer. Let’s look at another issue: breasts and breast tissues. Time and time again I see women with painful breast(s), and/ or with benign and/or malignant tumors of the breasts. We know that 80% of malignant breast cancer is estrogen-sensitive on histological pathology reports, yet a simple essential mineral can actually shut down these estrogen receptor sites, therefore probably eliminating 80% of estrogen dominant cancers. Come on! This is too simple to be true, but it is. We know if a woman takes a specific vitamin and mineral combination, 95% of all breast concerns can be eliminated. Why are these types of facts and statistics not in the news? Well, maybe because it would cripple the medical industry and also because
these simple, essential nutrients are not patentable! One of the leading causes of death in women today, breast cancer, could probably be eliminated by 95% with just monitoring and taking natural substances. The unnecessary mutilation of women and the psychological after-effects, let alone the costs, pain, and suffering could be eliminated by as much as 95%. Let’s explore the third issue that affects one in four women today: thyroid disease. The unfortunate situation is that the same women who suffer with ovarian issues also usually suffer with breast tissue issues, which then in the end finally lead to thyroid dysfunction. Please refer to the February issue of Natural Awakenings to find my in-depth article on the myths and misconceptions of the thyroid gland. Finally, let’s have a look at the post-menopausal issues: hot flashes and mood swings. In menopause, women’s adrenal glands and liver still produce estrogen and do not need hormone replacement therapy. Be it mare urine estrogens or bio-identical hormones, they are not needed, are foreign to the body, and will have long term consequences. As a matter of fact when you get your hormones checked, they should be in the free form, not bound to proteins to which 90% of reproductive hormones are. Never rely on having your reproductive hormones checked through serum samples (blood) since that only checks the hormones bound to proteins which are inactive. The conditions mentioned above affect half of the women in this country today. All the financial, physical, and emotional suffering of women is absolutely unnecessary. Simple, inexpensive measures can change your life. ©2015 Michael Badanek. If you or any other family members are suffering from health challenges, call Dr. Badanek for a courtesy consultation. Unleash New Human Potential by Natalie Vincent, LMT
P
erhaps one of the most exciting tools for educating and assisting those of you who have chosen a path to wellness and longevity is the SpectraVision Body Scan which represents the cumulative and latest knowledge in the field of energy medicine. The Spectra/Vision Body Scan uses a computer-based instrument to measure the energy of the body, providing a new and highly accurate method for determining the energetic causes of allergies and ailments. The SpectraVision Body Scan neither treats, diagnoses, nor cures. By quickly and non-invasively providing important information about what’s going on inside you, your practitioner has an immediate roadmap for supporting your body dramatically and efficiently. What Can The Body Scan Do? Because of the importance of supporting the energy systems of the body by use of this balancing process, many of the energetic blocks to wellness can be determined. Such blocks may include resonant stress responses to toxins such as pesticides, herbicides, chemicals and other toxic materials in your system (including dental materials such as mercury). Blocks can also result from issues surrounding defenses for viruses, bacteria, fungus or parasites, even from energetic demand for particular vitamins and minerals. The SpectraVision Body Scan is a completely dynamic system providing energetic insight to skeletal, nerves, organs, glands, hormones, amino acids and hundreds of other aspects of the body, including emotional aspects that hinder overall health.
22
How Does The Body Scan Actually Work? The computer measures the degree of electrical resistance of the acupressure points, generally the hands and feet. These measurements indicate the balances or imbalances of the various organ systems of the body and can detect low-level reactions in the body. It also indicates which nutritional or homeopathic remedy and the exact potency that will bring about an energy balance. Bioenergetic testing can also monitor the patients’ progress. There are no side effects or after-effects with proper use of the electro-diagnosis and therapy. No piercing of the skin, no discomfort and no electrical impulses are felt during the testing. F.D.A. approved, the testing is safe and gentle. Who Can Benefit from A Body Scan? Anyone wanting to improve the quality of their health and life would benefit as well as those with specific goals such as enhancing sports performance. For those who feel they have not responded adequately to conventional medicine, you may be surprised at what you are told is bothering you before you say a word about why you have come!

HIDDEN TALENTS Neighbors Discover Their Wealth of Resources
T
by John McKnight and Peter Block
he essential promise of consumerism is that everything fulfilling or needed in life can be purchased— from happiness to healing, from love to laughter and from raising a child to caring for someone at the end of life. What was once the task of relatives and neighbors has been outsourced, costing the family its capacity to manage traditionally provided necessities. The community, which once provided an extended support system, is no longer viable, replaced by paid professionals and technology. Until the 20th century, the basic philosophy of rearing children was that they become effective grownups by connecting with productive adults and learning the community’s skills, traditions and customs from them. Youth had jobs to do: caring for the elderly and young, doing household chores and helping with food. When they became adults, they were thus equipped to care both for the next generation and for those who had cared for them. Today, the most effective communities are those in which neighborhoods and residents have reclaimed their traditional roles. The research on this point is decisive. Where there are “thick” community connections, there is positive child development. Health improves, the environment is sustained,
24
and people are safer and have a stronger local economy. We too, can decide to shift our attention toward rebuilding the functions of our family and neighborhood. We have the gifts, structures and capacities to substitute for our habit of consumption. Here’s an example of how it works. Neighbors Naomi Alessio and Jackie Barton were talking about family challenges when Alessio noted her son Theron’s encouraging turnaround after he met Mr. Thompson, who had a metalworking shop in his garage. The old man invited him in and something clicked. Theron began to stop by every day, proudly bringing home metal pieces he’d learned to make. Alessio could see Theron change and finally stopped worrying about what he was doing after school. Barton admitted that her son Alvin was in trouble, and asked Alessio if there might be someone in the neighborhood whose skills would interest him. They decided to ask all the men in the neighborhood about their interests and skills. In three weeks, they found men who knew about juggling, barbecuing, bookkeeping, fishing, hunting, haircutting, bowling, investigating crimes, writing poems, fixing cars, weightlifting, choral singing, teaching dogs tricks,
mathematics, praying and how to play trumpet, drums and the saxophone. They discovered enough talent for all the kids in the neighborhood to tap into. Three of the men they met— Charles Wilt, Mark Sutter and Sonny Reed—joined Alessio, Barton and Thompson in finding out what the kids on the block were interested in learning. Also, why not ask the kids what they knew? They found 22 things the young people knew that might be of interest to some adults on the block. The six neighbors named themselves the Matchmakers and began to connect neighbors who shared the same interests, from gardening to job opportunities. They created a multiuse neighborhood website. Many neighbors formed a band, plus a choir led by Sarah Ensley, an elder who’d been singing all her life. Charles Dawes, a police officer, formed an intergenerational team to make the block a safe haven for everyone. Then Lenore Manse decided to write family histories with photos and persuaded neighborhood historian Jim Caldwell and her best friend, Lannie Eaton, to help. Wilt suggested that the Matchmakers welcome newcomers by giving them a copy of the block history, and then updating it with information about each new family. Three years later at the annual block party, Barton summed up the neighborhood’s accomplishment: “We’re all connected. We’re a real community now.” These local connections can give the modern family what the extended family once provided: a functioning community with a strong culture of kin, friends and neighbors. A regenerated community emerges, yielding essential qualities of a satisfying life: kindness, generosity, cooperation, forgiveness, and the ability to nurture families that have reclaimed their function. Adapted from an article by John McKnight and Peter Block for YES! Magazine that appears in its anthology, Sustainable Happiness. They are co-authors of The Abundant Community: Awakening the Power of Families and Neighborhoods (Abundant Community.com).
