Gentle readers, This month, I read a remarkable little book called The Afterlife of Billy Fingers, a true story by a reluctant writer named Annie Kagan. Annie, a Manhattan chiropractor, had moved to the oceanfront to pursue a quieter lifestyle. When she learned that her brother, Billy, had been killed in an accident, she went through a period of depression until he communicated with her after his death. A practical and grounded person, Dr. Kagan was reluctant even to talk about her experiences, let alone to write about them, until it became clear to her that this book, which is actually a remarkable collaboration between Kagan and her late brother, was “meant to be.” Through a series of remarkable clues and coincidences, Billy proved to Dr. Kagan that she wasn’t going nuts or imagining things, and her confidence and spiritual awakening grew. The book explores wonderful concepts for living joyfully here on earth, and takes the reader into unimaginable realms that are typically accessible only after earthly life. Recommended reading. Around $11 (paperback) or $9 (Kindle). Namaste, Carolyn

newsbriefs Ocala Civic Theatre opening 2013-14 season with “Les Misérables”
T
he blockbuster musical “Les Misérables” is coming to Ocala Civic Theatre September 5-October 13 for an unprecedented six-week run. The epic musical production has become a classic family favorite and was further popularized by the 2012 movie of the same name. The play first opened in Paris in 1980, and the English-language production opened in London in 1985, where it is still onstage. It opened on Broadway in 1987 and ran for 16 years. Based on the 1862 novel by Victor Hugo, the play’s powerful music is by Claude-Michel Schönberg, with the original French lyrics by Alain Boublil and Jean-Marc Natel, and the English-language libretto by Herbert Kretzmer. Auditions will take place in mid-July. Auditioners should prepare 16 measures from each of two contrasting songs (an accompanist will be available) and be prepared to participate in a dance workshop. Season tickets will be available in May. Individualshow tickets will be available in early August. For more information about “Les Misérables” tickets or auditions, contact Ocala Civic Theatre, 352-2362274, www.OcalaCivicTheatre.com.

More Sleep Helps Shed Pounds
E
njoying more zzz’s is not usually associated with weight loss, but a growing number of epidemiological studies suggest that insufficient sleep may be linked to a greater risk of weight gain. The latest results from a study presented at the 2012 annual meeting of the Society for the Study of Ingestive Behavior points out that sleep behavior influences body weight by affecting not only how many calories we consume, but also how much energy we expend. When researchers at Tübingen and Lübeck universities, in Germany, and Uppsala University, in Sweden, investigated the effect of short-term sleep deprivation on hunger, physical activity, and energy levels, they discovered that insufficient sleep increased the participants’ sensations of hunger by raising the level of the “hunger hormone,” ghrelin. The less sleep a person had, the hungrier they felt. After only one night of disrupted sleep, the volunteers moved around less and burned off fewer calories in their resting state than their counterparts who enjoyed a good night’s sleep.
Yoga Reduces Depression in Pregnant Women
P
regnancy hormones are known to cause myriad physical and emotional symptoms, including unexplainable mood swings. The fluctuations are more serious for one in five expectant moms because they also experience major depression. Now, a groundbreaking study by the University of Michigan offers new hope. Pregnant women identified as psychiatrically high-risk who participated in a 10-week mindfulness yoga intervention experienced significant reductions in their depressive symptoms. Mothers-to-be also reported stronger attachment to their babies in the womb.
Working Out Hot Flashes
O
ne of the most common and uncomfortable symptoms of menopause might respond positively to a simple, no-cost measure. Health researchers at Penn State report that menopausal women who exercise tend to experience fewer hot flashes in the 24 hours following physical activity. In this first-time study of objective versus subjective, or self-reported, hot flashes, the Pennsylvania researchers studied 92 menopausal women for 15 days.

S
ometimes referred to as the aristocrat of vegetables, asparagus has been cultivated for more than 2,000 years. It was prized by ancient Greeks and Romans for its taste and reputed medicinal qualities, and 19th-century French bridegrooms, believing it was an aphrodisiac, frequently ate several helpings on the eve of their nuptials. The crop reaches its peak during April and May. Packing a fiber-filled punch of vitamins A and C, this princely veggie also delivers significant helpings of folate and rutin, which help to strengthen blood vessels. Its delicate flavor is best preserved by stir-frying or light steaming. Source: FruitsAndVeggiesMatter.gov
Exercise Advantage
T
aking a brisk walk or bike ride may stave off cognitive decline better than reaching for the daily crossword puzzle, says a new study published in the journal Neurology. Researchers at Scotland’s University of Edinburgh reviewed the medical records of more than 600 Scots born in 1936 who were given MRI scans at age 73. “People in their 70s who participated in more physical exercise, including walking several times a week, had less brain shrinkage and other signs of aging in the brain than those who were less physically active,” says study author Alan J. Gow, Ph.D. Surprisingly, the study showed that participating in mentally and socially stimulating activities, such as visiting family and friends, reading, or even learning a new language, did little to ward off the symptoms of an aging brain. Study participants will undergo a second MRI scan at age 76, and researchers plan to compare the two scans to see if the links between exercise and better brain health hold up.

Fewer Scans May Lower Breast Cancer Risk
W
hile screening for breast cancer is important, women should avoid unnecessary medical imaging, according to a recent report issued by the Institute of Medicine (IOM) which identified two factors that increased the risk for the disease: post-menopausal hormone replacement therapy and radiation exposure from medical imaging. Physician Rebecca Smith-Bindman, a professor of radiology and biomedical imaging, epidemiology and biostatistics at the University of California-San Francisco, who contributed to the IOM report, notes that CT scans and other forms of medical imaging have revolutionized medicine and can be lifesaving. However, she recommends that women engage their doctors in the decision-making process and discuss the necessity and safety of all potential radiological scans. To understand the risks and benefits, it’s suggested women ask their doctor: “Is this scan absolutely essential? Is it necessary to do it now? Are there other, alternative tests, such as thermography? How can I be sure the test will be done in the safest way possible? Will having the scan information change the management of my disease? Can I wait until after seeing a specialist before getting the scan?”
Midwife-Led Birth Centers Improve Outcomes
W
omen who receive care at midwife-led birth centers incur lower medical costs and are less likely to have Caesarean births than women who give birth at hospitals, according to new findings by the American Association of Birth Centers (AABC). The rising number of Caesarean births in the United States (32 percent in 2010, according to the National Centers for Disease Control National Vital Statistics Report) has generated concern due to short- and long-term health implications for women, their newborns and future pregnancies. The AABC study, which included more than 15,500 women who received care in 79 midwife-led birth centers in 33 states from 2007 through 2010, found that fewer than 6 percent of the participants required a Caesarean birth, compared to nearly 24 percent similarly low-risk women cared for in a hospital setting. Birth centers—homelike facilities functioning within the health care system—are based on a wellness model of pregnancy and birth personalized to individual needs. “They are uniquely positioned to provide healthy women and their newborns with maternity care, avoiding unnecessary Caesarean births,” advises AABC PresidentElect Lesley Rathbun, a certified nurse midwife and family nurse practitioner. “Americans need to learn about the high-quality care that midwife-led birth centers offer.” Source: American College of Nurse-Midwives

A WOMAN’S GUIDE TO
FINANCIAL
HEALTH It Starts with Trusting Your Intuition by Lisa Marshall
O
ne midnight, serving behind the counter of a Dunkin’ Donuts, Jen Smith could see the future—and it terrified her. She was working the graveyard shift at a job she hated, living in a cramped apartment and knew nothing about entrepreneurship or investment strategies. When a homeless woman clad in rags wandered in for a warm cup of coffee, Smith shivered. “The only thing standing between her and me was one paycheck and that counter,” recalls Smith, 45, of Fort Collins, Colorado. “I realized that I was in a vulnerable spot, with no backup plan.” Fast forward two decades to today; Smith now boasts a $2 million net worth and the financial independence to work only when she wants to. When you ask for her secret, she makes little mention of how to create a winning stock portfolio. Instead, she says, her decisions about how to earn and how to spend have come from a deeper, more esoteric source. Says Smith: “I asked myself: ‘What is it that I love to do?’” Then she went to work investing in herself and a succession of six small businesses, starting
12
“A wealthy woman absolutely has money, but she also has happiness, courage, balance and harmony. A wealthy woman is generous, clean, wise and therefore, beautiful. It’s my wish that you will carry these eight qualities within you wherever you go and that they will serve as your guideposts to make sure you are always walking toward wealth, rather than walking away from it.” ~ Suze Orman with $1,500 per bootstrap operation. Initially, she earned her way working with animals while investing her dollars with an eye toward environmental stewardship. In 2007, she founded a personal finance blog, MillionaireMommyNextDoor.com. Along the way, she discovered that, “Mindfully identifying what truly makes you tick, and then aligning your decisions with your own personal values, is key to financial well-being.” Smith is among a growing number of women looking beyond the traditional world of personal finance
to summon emotions, spirituality, intuition and personal values in the pursuit of economic abundance. Many books, blogs and magazines, too, have begun to explore the unlikely intersection of right-brain, inner voice consciousness and personal finance. “Our culture has always been very much focused on facts and research, but people are starting to realize we can’t just continue to rely solely on what we have relied on before, because it doesn’t work,” remarks Lynn Robinson, a Massachusetts-based “business intuitive” who advises ex-

ecutives on how to use their intuition to make better business decisions. “We are all looking for a deeper knowledge base, and that means looking within.”
Setting the Stage
The shift comes at a time when, according to national statistics, women are facing unprecedented financial responsibility. According to U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, January 2010 marked the first time in U. S. history that women comprised more than half (50.3 percent) of the workforce. Fifty-seven percent of all current college students are women, according to the American Council on Education. Thirty-eight percent of all working wives earn as much or more than their husbands, as of the 2009 Shriver Report. Nearly 16 percent of wives are the sole family breadwinners. Meanwhile, women continue to do the bulk of the housework (97 minutes per day for married women, versus 29 minutes per day for married men, according to a 2009 study by Vanderbilt University). Despite these employment trends,
women still make roughly 80 percent of what men do for the same work. Complicating the situation, when it comes to making financial decisions, many females still tend to be fearful, naïve and disempowered, according to financial health guru Suze Orman. “Women have been thrust into an entirely new relationship with money that is profoundly different than anything we have ever encountered before… Yet when it comes to navigating the financial ramifications of this new world, they are using old maps that don’t get them where they want to go,” writes Orman, in Women and Money: Owning the Power to Control Your Destiny. Orman notes that only 12 percent of women feel confident about retirement and many continue to either leave their financial decisions in the hands of a male or ignore them altogether. This may be due to feeling embarrassed about their lack of knowledge, or a sheer lack of time. New female graduates are facing a brutal job market; many laid-off
women find themselves in a midcareer job search and widows and divorceés are facing retirement with a smaller-than-expected nest egg. All these women want to know, “How can I confidently embrace my new role in the evolving economy in a way that leads to financial independence?”
First Steps to Solvency Understand the Underlying Emotions
Few heard in high school economics class that our relationship with money is intricately intertwined with emotion, comments Julie Murphy Casserly, a Chicago-based certified financial planner. Some of us are spenders, whipping out the credit card at the mall to ease some inner pain. Some are givers, picking up the tab at group events in an effort to feed a need to be liked. Others—perhaps those who grew up in poverty—are hoarders, holding on so tightly to their money that they cease to enjoy it or make it grow via sound investments.
Tips for Choosing a Financial Advisor n Look for a licensed certified financial planner, who must abide by a code of ethics, take a difficult test that covers everything from taxes to investments to estate planning, and keep up with continuing education credits.
someone with at least several years of experience, but one whom you can also grow with. You do not want someone who may retire just when you need him or her the most.
n Look for a fee-only advisor, not one paid a commission to sell you a certain investment product. They will work at an hourly rate, charge a percentage of the assets they are managing for you, or a combination of the two.
n Ask how they will incorporate your values and lifestyle to inform the advice they give you.
n Just because someone is a good self-marketer doesn’t mean they are a good money manager. Get three referrals from people whom you respect and who have done well financially during both up and down markets. Call all three of them.
n Choose someone you can understand. If he or she speaks in jargon and makes you feel intimidated, it is not a good fit.
n Ask how long the individual has been a financial advisor. You want

Recognizing which type we are, and when our emotions are sabotaging good financial decisions, is an important first step to attracting wealth. A tip for spenders and givers, who both tend to end up carrying debt, is to cut up credit cards and start using cash. “There is no emotional connection with sliding a debit or credit card, but when you physically hand over $200 in cash, you feel that,” says Casserly.
Create a Life Map With her Dunkin’ Donuts job
behind her and a blank slate ahead, Smith took a serious self-inventory. When she concluded that she wanted to work with animals, she called a kennel and agreed to groom dogs a few hours each day in exchange for an education in dog training. Within a few years, she owned a lucrative dog training and boarding business. “Our lives are the stories we narrate for ourselves,” she says. “If we don’t like the story our life has become, we can tell our self a better one… and act on it.” Smith recommends making a “Treasure Map to a Rich Life” out of poster board as a visual reminder of what’s important to us (e.g., travel, family, a career in a specific field). When life circumstances derail those aspirations, which often happens, we can take a reminder peek. Say our leading aspiration is getting out of debt. Imagine what the day would look, feel and taste like absent that nagging credit card bill. Would we start saving for a son or daughter to go to college or quit that second job? Write it all down and post the intention in full view. “Surround yourself with all the things you are trying to create,” advises Casserly. “Persistently replace any shame, blame and guilt with dreams and desires.”
Earn with Our Spirit in Mind As Rosemary Williams, founder
of Women’s Perspective (WomensPerspective.org), puts it: “Spirituality and money come together easily when we realize that we cannot live a satisfactory life when we don’t engage our own spirits or when we operate against our soul’s purpose.” No one would argue

For the first time, more than half of all U.S. workers are women, and that changes everything. Not just for women, but also for spouses, families, bosses, coworkers and society. This is a permanent change in our culture that’s affecting nearly every aspect of our lives—how we work and play and care for one another. ~ The Shriver Report
that we all tend to do our best work when we choose jobs we are passionate about, and that when we invest in things contrary to our beliefs, they are never as satisfying. “Part of what the chaos of the current economy is bringing up for people is the question, ‘What am I here to do and what calling do I have?’” says Robinson, noting that the root of the word enthusiasm is entheos, or “God within,” in Greek. “Try to figure out what it is that enthuses you,” she counsels, “and then ask, ‘How can I make a living at this?’ at least part of the time.”
Trust Gut Wisdom
Whether deciding in which stock to invest or whether to trust a potential business partner, the power of intuition cannot be understated, advises Robinson. Some view a gut instinct as the subconscious synthesis of past knowledge that rises to the surface when our brain needs it. Others see it as a manifestation of a Higher Power. Either way, it’s worth listening to, as a critical adjunct. A good way to start each day is with a 10-minute prayer/meditation, asking that inner voice to provide three ways to help advance our financial health, and staying alert the rest of the day to listen for the answer, which can come when we least expect it. “I often find that when a woman asks these questions, it primes the pump,
and when she is walking the dog or doing the laundry, she may hear an inner voice speaking,” Robinson says. “Pay attention.”
Spend According to Personal Values
To Washington-based writer Vicki Robin, author of The New York Times best seller, Your Money or Your Life, financial independence is as much about spending less as making more. “It’s not about going out and getting a financial advisor or turning over your savings to the stock market. It’s about living within your means, saving money and getting out of debt,” she observes. “Every financial decision you make is a chance to say ‘What are my values, really, and how does this serve them?’” Robin recommends viewing money as “life energy” and assigning value as such to each purchase we make. Is that high-end haircut and coloring really worth the stress or time away from family for what it costs? What is worth that much to us? Once we start aligning our spending with that inner conversation, we will inevitably spend less, which results in less debt, more savings and ultimately, more freedom, she says. Smith agrees. With the money she made working with animals, she invested first in real estate, and then in stocks. When she acknowledged her four-bedroom, three-bath home didn’t jive with her Earth-conscious values, she downsized. She still drives a 12-year-old car, frequents Craigslist and sticks with a frugal but gratifying “values-based budget.” The payoff for her, her husband and her young daughter has been huge. “We spend very little on housing or transportation, but we buy organic food. We travel when we want to, we homeschool our daughter and we spend as much time as we want together,” she smiles. “Probably the biggest thing this has all bought us is time.” Lisa Marshall is a freelance writer who lives in Lyons, Colorado. TEN STEPS TO FINANCIAL SUCCESS Set a goal: Ask yourself what financial independence means to you and determine your “enough” point. If you’ve already reached it and continue to work long hours to buy more stuff, it may be time to reevaluate your priorities. Keep good records: Balance your checkbook every month and use that account only for ready cash and bills (the rest goes into savings). Create a bill file and pay them on time. Knowing how much money is coming in and out is critical to relieving anxiety and will save on fees and fines. Save: Every woman needs a safety net in the form of her own savings account. Remember that on average, half of all marriages end in divorce, women tend to outlive their husbands, and other relationships often end. Ultimately, you should have living expenses for six to eight months saved. Put something in the account each month, even if it means making a lower payment on a household credit card. Get out of debt: Pay off the highest interest rate credit card first; once it’s at a zero balance, shift all that money to another one. To avoid racking up debt again, envision what you would do if you didn’t have that monthly payment and put a picture depicting it on your refrigerator or stick a Post-it note describing it on your credit card as a reminder. Spend thoughtfully: Consider money spent as “life energy.” Every time you spend, ask yourself: Is it worth the life energy (or time spent working) it will take to earn this amount back? Open a retirement account early: As with savings, many women tend to leave the couple’s retirement account up to their husband, but you need your own. Start today by sock-

ing away a reasonable portion of your income each month. Depending on the investments you choose and what the market does in coming decades, that could amount to a nice nest egg by retirement age. Invest wisely: Be prudent, but not too prudent. If you’re young, invest the bulk of your retirement in stocks, which tend to outperform bonds. If you are closer to retirement, shift to stable-value funds. Consider joining or starting an investment club. These meet regularly, pool $25 to $100 per member per month, discuss investment strategies, and collectively choose stocks to invest in as a group. Of the 8,600 clubs in the United States, about one-quarter are women-only, according to the nonprofit Better Investing. Learn more at BetterInvesting.org or from the book Chicks Laying Nest Eggs.
and workshop leader Rosemary Williams. Your employees work harder. Your banker might waive a fee or make a courtesy call to let you know an overdraft is pending. More importantly, it forces you to take stock of what you do have right now—and appreciate it. Trust your instincts: If it doesn’t feel right, whether it’s an investment or a new business partnership, don’t do it. If it does feel right, do your homework first before making a decision. Think in thirds: Think of your money in three segments: “past, present and future.” Spend some of it paying for the past (getting out of debt), use some to treat yourself in the present (love yourself and take care of yourself) and invest some for the future. Show gratitude: It is interesting what begins to happen when you start to say “Thankyou,” to people, observes financial advisor

Candida Overgrowth by Nuris Lemire, MS, OTR/L, NC
C
andida Albicans is a naturally occurring yeast that is present in all our bodies—and it is supposed to be there, in balance with many other microorganisms. The problem begins when several factors in our lifestyle cause the Candida to grow disproportionally and it overtakes all the other healthy microorganisms. This yeast normally resides in the intestinal tract, mouth, throat, and genitals. However, it can burrow holes in the intestinal tract, enter the bloodstream, and then make its way into any organ of the body. To make matters worse, it emits more than 70 different toxins into the body. Some people even become allergic to the yeast itself. Candida symptoms are vast and all-encompassing, mimic other disorders, and can even incapacitate the individual. Candida is nearly an epidemic in our society and is responsible for
many of the chronic illness categories we see so frequently. Most people are unaware that it even exists, because many mainstream doctors are uneducated about its impact on our health. People suffering from Candida infestation often go from doctor to doctor for years and are usually told they are a hypochondriac or that it is stress or a psychiatric problem, before ever discovering the real culprit. Once this yeast proliferates in the body, it can wreak havoc in many ways and is likely an instigator of many common maladies, conditions, syndromes and illnesses in our population. Some of the most commonly reported Candida symptoms are: constant tiredness and exhaustion; headaches/migraines; foggy brain/ trouble concentrating; intense cravings for sugars, sweets, and breads; prostatitis or vaginitis; rectal itching; anxiety, hyperactivity, attention deficit,

The organ most frequently affected by yeast overgrowth is the brain, but it also affects these systems: digestive, nervous, cardiovascular, respiratory, reproductive, urinary, endocrine, lymphatic, and musculoskeletal. Candida symptoms can vary from one person to another and often move back and forth between systems within the same individual. One day an affected person might experience symptoms in the musculoskeletal system, and the next day it could be the digestive system, etc. Despite the wide range of diseases Candida mimics, there is an easy way to determine whether Candida might be a source of an individual’s problems: check the tongue. Candida suffers often have a white-coated tongue. If you believe you have a Candida overgrowth, you should discuss it with your doctor. Edible Hormones Health Support for Women by Sayer Ji and Tania Melkonian
I
n addition to relieving symptoms of menopause and andropause and helping maintain a normal, balanced hormone system, healthy eating can yield many other benefits. According to U.S. National Library of Medicine research reports, these include weight management, bone health, fertility, and natural defenses against breast and prostate cancers and osteoarthritis symptoms. Despite drug-free approaches to hormone health that predate synthesized 20th-century hormone replacement therapy, the pharmaceutical industry has all but vanquished eating appropriately nutritious foods as a means to balancing hormones. Why do people embrace external sourcing when natural internal functioning is the better, less costly and more permanent solution? Even the current bio-identical upgrade of hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) may lead to some biological dependency on these substances. Appropriate BHRT should include an analysis of how the individual uniquely metabolizes hormones, and functional foods that can help. An edible approach to hormone health provides deep nourishment for glands, enabling increased production of what they lack due to changes associated with age or illness. Healthy eating likewise reduces the activity of excess hormones already in the body, beneficially mimicking their previous function without the unwanted side effects. Here are some leading food aids to get us there.

The resemblance of the inner topography of a pomegranate to an ovary is more than poetic homage. Pre-Renaissance Western www.GoNaturalAwakenings.com
herbalists commonly held that a plant food’s visual similarity to a human organ indicated a positive health correlation. Research published in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology on pomegranates by Japanese scientists revealed that the seeds and fleshy capsules within which they are suspended, called arils, contain estrogens structurally similar to those found in mammals. Preclinical results published in Phytochemistry may explain why extracts of these plant-derived bioidentical hormones mimicking estradiol, estriol and estrone are capable of replacing the function of an ovary. A Japanese study published in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology reported that female mice whose ovaries had been removed and were later fed pomegranate juice and pomegranate seed extract for two weeks showed reversals in bone loss and anxiety.
Broccoli
Cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli and Brussels sprouts, collard and mustard greens, and the root vegetables kohlrabi and rutabaga contain glucosinolates, which help protect DNA from damage, according to a study published in Current Science. Also, ever-increasing preclinical and clinical evidence shows that consuming cruciferous vegetables reduces the risk of more than 100 health problems, including many cancers, such as those affecting the bladder and breasts.
Flax
Unwelcome symptoms of perimenopause (which can last years before the completion of menopause) can be offset through daily ingestion of ground flax, which can be added to cereals, salads and other foods. Ground flaxseed mixed with dried berries is particularly palatable.
As the ovarian reserve of naturally manufactured hormones exhausts itself and prompts an imbalance, flaxseed is particularly effective in rebalancing levels of desirable estrogen metabolites, such as breast-friendly 2-hydroxylestrone. It contains a fiber, lignin, that upon digestion produces two important phytoestrogens capable of stimulating the body’s natural estrogen receptors in cases of estrogen deficiency and blocking both synthetic and natural estrogen when there is excess (as in puberty). These properties have been confirmed in human clinical studies performed at the University of Toronto’s Department of Nutritional Sciences and the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. Thus, flaxseed may be considered a source of plant “estrogen” capable of prompting regression of estrogen-sensitive cancers, including those of the breast and prostate. Extremely versatile in culinary applications, combining flaxseed with ground cumin provides a medicinally potent homemade seasoning supporting women’s hormonal health.
Cumin
Cumin—actually a fruit disguised as a spice—has tremendous hormonemodulating properties recently confirmed by findings in Experimental Biology and Medicine. Japanese scientists demonstrated that cumin seeds can inhibit loss of bone density and strength as effectively as estrogen in a female rat model of age-associated osteoporosis. They further found that the cumin seeds did not have estrogen’s weight-promoting and possible carcinogenic effects on the uterus. Eating these foods beats a serving of Premarin with a serving of unwanted side effects any day. Immersing ourselves in the soul-satisfying zest of creative expression answers this indwelling call. It opens us to Divinity. We feel transformed, fully authentic, utterly alive. But how often do we fully feed our artistic soul, a need as essential to a balanced life as exercise and meditation? We need not be a natural-born artist. For creativity naturally colors all we do as we journey and listen to our dreams. It’s how we give meaning to life. And it has little relation to the outside world’s objective standards and aesthetic criteria. “In certain parts of the world inhabited by indigenous peoples there is no distinction between being human and being an artist,” observes painter Aviva Gold. “Everyone is an art maker.” And that, in a nutshell, is what creativity workshops are all about. This month Natural Awakenings explores how four experienced workshop leaders can guide us in releasing our own inborn joy of creation. Shelley Berc and Alejandro Fogel operate worldwide from Creativity Workshop in New York. Jeanne Carbonetti’s home base is Crow Hill Gallery in Vermont. Aviva Gold teaches Painting from the Source out of California.
“I still recall Aviva’s words: ‘Let the painting speak to you. Don’t try to control it. Don’t even think about it,’” says novelist Paul Block after a Painting from the Source workshop. “She said, ‘Stay with your painting until it tells you it is finished.’”

Writer Shelley Berc and multimedia artist Alejandro Fogel established their company, Creativity Workshop, in 1993. Together they lead workshops that develop imagination through tools of writing, drawing, storytelling and personal memoir. Exercises help participants delve into their own life stories, childhood memories and intuition midst inspiring environments in New York, Barcelona, Florence, Prague, Provence, Dublin, Bruges and Crete. Berc’s plays have won multiple national awards. She’s published two novels, and writes “Postcards from Shelley” a column about her world travels. From 1985 until 2000 Berc served as Professor of the International Writing Program and the Iowa Playwrights Workshop at the University of Iowa. Fogel’s award-winning artworks grace galleries, museums and public and private collections in 10 countries on four continents. Media range from words and paint to video, digital and performance art. A major focus explores the cultural heritage and legacies of Pre-Columbian art. He’s helped develop a native folk artists archive with the Argentine Commission of Visual Arts. And he’s been artist-in-residence at the Institute of Current World Affairs and the Rockefeller Foundation Study and Conference Center.

Painter and author Jeanne Carbonetti daily proves how the vital power of beauty enhances all life through its ability to harmonize opposites. A teacher for 30 years, she’s published four books on art and the creative process. Her initial series of three books use words and images to illustrate the Tao, Yoga and Zen of watercolor, drawing and painting. Her fourth walks readers through the seven stages of creativity. Her most recent book (The Magic Heart, 2012) includes full-length versions of the myths that were prologues to her first three books. Carbonnetti primarily works in watercolors that expound on nature’s rhythmic unity. She presents workshops nationally and teaches private sessions at Crow Hill Gallery in Chester, Vermont. “When we create from the unity of body, mind and spirit, we are one with our muse, and our work is always original, always powerful,” she says.
Aviva Gold’s Painting from the Source program together with her book and DVD of the same name are her means of skillfully guiding people to deep healing truth through their own spiritual evolution. She teaches painting as everyday shamanism at national workshops and in private sessions. With professional roots as a psychotherapist in private practice, art teacher of students from kindergarten through college, and workshop leader at personal growth centers around the world, this widely exhibited artist is a recognized figure in her field. Gold proves that everyone’s an artist. For 25 years she’s used her know-how to help individuals move through issues and access the blessed joy and power of a carefree child. Tasting the immediacy of the transformation that happens when the creative Source flows through us helps to dissolve traumas, resolve life’s mysteries and lead to personal and planetary health.
How do you feel before, during and after a personal creative session? AG: Before a creative session I prepare food, light a candle, mind the details that need to happen for me to peacefully settle into a safe, sacred place, totally present in the moment. Inside I feel excited about stepping out into the unknown. Though the creative Source has never failed me, I still question, ‘Will the magic happen? Will something touch me? Will it all come together?’ Then I reach a point where everything’s clicking. I’m surrendering to the Source and what the painting wants, allowing the unanticipated to come through. Afterwards I’m deeply satisfied at having connected with authentic being, on a natural high, energized, open, alive. JC: I see all of life as one whole creative time, cycling through various stages. To prepare for heightened moments of creative activity, I begin in a period of seeking to know the answer to some question I am asking. Then I move into a state of just being and play. It’s like popping my head

into a different plane for a look around before eventually returning to the ordinary plane. Being in the experience is what it’s all about, staying free of self-judgment. Then comes the knowing that what I’ve seen is always in me, though unseen until it’s on paper. AF: Drawing is the first thing I do when I wake. But looking at pristine blank paper is so intimidating my stomach aches. I have to remind myself that it’s really only a piece of paper, a surface to work on. To get over it, every morning I have to crumble up and throw away a piece of paper before I can start drawing—beautiful $5 a piece Fabriano paper. I must do it or I can’t work. SB: I meditate before I write. It helps me relax, so that I can listen and perceive deeply. While writing I feel like an antenna for the world—not just for people, but nature too—so my feelings fluctuate. The best is when I feel nothing but being inside the words. If a musical instrument could feel, perhaps that’s what it would feel like when playing music. It can be exhausting listening to inner characters invent themselves. My everyday self doesn’t quite know where it fits in after I’ve finished a day’s writing.
How can participants emotionally prepare for a creative workshop with you? SB: We counsel workshop participants to relax and be patient with themselves. We all need to release the ego that gets in the way of new and innovative ideas and makes us fearful of doing things we might not be good at right away. A project’s innate gestation period might be longer than we
20
want. But as author Ranier Maria Rilke says, ‘You can’t tell a seed how long it should take to sprout.’ Come to class with the spirit of a beginner’s mind. Over and over we start at ground zero, for every moment of imagination is like no other. Children understand this. Adults sometimes say, ‘I did this as a kid, why would I do it again now? I already know it!’ But true seeing is always new. It calls for simplicity, not-knowing, not pre-conceiving. Every session is geared to this sense of seeing and doing for the first time. AF: Creativity workshops are about process not product. We must suspend judgment and just keep writing and drawing. We’re like runners racing against our critical selves. If we can outrun that, we’ll see amazing possibilities. The only mistake we can make is to give up on our imagination. That’s why author Samuel Beckett advises that we “Fail, then fail better.” We must keep trying, exploring, believing we can go deeper. JC: Students can start by becoming aware of the different voices that speak to us through our thinking mind, instinctual body mind and intuitive heart mind. I talk a lot about these in my books. We need to begin asking: ‘What do I feel right now? What do I know? What do I love? What will I choose? In the workshop, my job is to ensure that all three minds are dancing together as we discover each student’s core creative power. AG: Students must prepare for a spiritual vision quest, which I take along with them. I suggest they cut back on sugar, caffeine and alcohol, start watching their dreams, meditate and journal. They read my book Painting from the Source, and some even start an image with the tempera paints we use in class to bring with them. We let family and friends know they’ll be out of touch and not to expect to see a painting upon their return. I ask students to arrive a day early, leave behind anyone who requires thought and care, and dress for comfort in PJs and sweats. We’re ready to never be the same again.
What happens as people move through this creative process? SB: People become less fearful and more playful. They gain courage in their creative ventures. Writers discover they can draw. Visual folks fall in love with writing. We strip the barriers between creative disciplines and try to race back and forth between language and imagery so creativity becomes a fluid, joyful whole, a reliable river of inspired ideas. AF: Joan Miro has painted the same stars all over his paintings ever since he was a teenager. I asked a Miro museum curator why. She said that every morning when Miro faced his canvas he’d panic and freeze. He couldn’t start working. One morning, Miro faced away from the blank space, held his brush behind his back and doodled some strokes. When he turned and saw that a star had emerged, he realized that the canvas was no longer empty or intimidating. In our workshops we start with doodling geometric shapes like spirals, circles and infinity loops. The shapes get us going. JC: I think that every creative act reveals one’s true self. Practice teaches us to trust the process. Logically minded students may go into overdrive figuring out what’s right and wrong, become frustrated, and get in the way of their own progress. Instinctive students may jump in full out, suddenly stop, and move on to another piece without bringing anything to fruition. Each must learn to pause,
Printed on recycled paper to protect the environment
step back, and let their heart-mind make the best use of all three parts. AG: Here people confront their greatest hopes and fears. In deep soul work we cycle through an emotional birth, death and rebirth, much like a caterpillar morphs into a butterfly via a dark cocoon. Along the way we encounter emotional issues, sometimes nightmare images, which surface to flush free. We may drum, chant, move about and make animal noises as we shape shift in creative trance. When we emerge—as we always do—our painting provides a record of the journey. It becomes a talisman or altar piece that represents parts of us exactly right.
Exploring one’s creative self often turns into a peak spiritual experience. How has an intensive workshop like yours changed the way participants live their lives? JC: Moving from internally competing parts to an integrated, synchronized harmony of elements is like moving from living in a dysfunctional family to a happy functioning life. All systems are go. Nothing’s stopping the heart of creativity now that we’re paying attention to the small voice constantly pointing out our path. Priorities will shift. All we are and do becomes part of the creative cycle. We come to realize that everyone’s an artist, in every field of endeavor. And we can never go back. AG: In dramatic or subtle shifts students may drop unhealthy habits, find healing, commit to self-discipline, break off an abusive relationship, have a baby, become an environmental volunteer, start painting or join an artist support group. Usually they take action in a direction that’s hovered on the edge of consciousness for a while. When we’ve given expression to the scariest side of our self and survived, we feel newly alive. We no longer need to anaesthetize our self against our innermost fear. It’s like we’ve pulled the plug on a murky pool and it just drains away. We are safe. AF: Many report that this workshop has changed their lives. But it’s they who have changed. Our workshop acts as a gentle www.GoNaturalAwakenings.com
catalyst that nudges and nurtures toward such change. Some go on to switch jobs, practice art, start or finish a book, travel, work with children or volunteer as peace activists. Collaborative discussions in class feed everyone’s inspiration.
What inner indicators signal that we are ready to take this step? SB: So many of us once wrote, painted, performed or took photos, then gave it up for one reason or another. Plus we have this absurd cultural notion that if we can’t make money at it then we aren’t good enough to do it. One day we wake up and say, ‘I used to love doing that. Why don’t I do it any more?’ Forgetting that we have something is different from never having had it, for it can be reawakened and valued. As teachers, Alejandro and I help students realize that expressing one’s self creativity is as natural as breathing. Living in itself is a creative act. Artful living is a way of always seeing things with curious new eyes, exploring, questioning, courageously stepping out to be who we are. A creativity
workshop like ours provides a frame in which to play, discover and refine our voices, images and dreams. AG: People come to my workshop in response to some catalyst, a major change in their life circumstances. They may have been aware of the opportunity for some time and known intuitively it would require transformation. Now they’re ready to transition to a way of being more closely aligned with their soul’s purpose. JC: People come to a creativity workshop because they hear the call of the hero’s journey. It pulls us forward and we lean into it, shoulders lifted and tummy tingling. It’s not an outside ‘should.’ It’s an inward ‘must.’ S. Alison Chabonais is a freelance writer and contributing editor to Natural Awakenings.

Three Amazingly Easy Fruit Trees by David Y. Goodman, UF/IFAS Marion County Master Gardener

ankee immigrants often claim Florida is “no good for fruit trees,” except oranges. Some have even brought their favorite apple trees south with them, which then bite the dust—and Florida gets blamed as a tree-killing wasteland. While it’s true we can’t grow cherries, European dessert pears, or northern apple varieties, we can grow some great fruit. Here are three varieties that are so easy even a transplanted Yankee could grow them. Loquats The loquat tree is the easiest of the easy. You’ll see fruit falling off loquat trees around town every March. For some reason, people often use this as a landscape tree, not a source of delicious sweet-tart fruits—and that’s to their great loss. Loquats are a handsome evergreen with large, glossy, crinkled leaves. The fruits, though a little smaller than store-bought plums, are delicious and plentiful. The loquat tree never became much of a commercial crop because of its really short storage time. Pick and process the fruits as soon as they’re soft. If you leave them on your counter for more than a day or so, you might as well toss them in the compost. The fruit is excellent for preserves, is delicious when frozen, and dries like a champ. If you like dried apricots, you’ll like dried loquats. To grow the tree, simply find a place in your yard that has at least half-sun, and put the tree in the ground. Water it well for the first year and then you can basically walk away. From seed, the loquat takes about six years to bear fruit. Larger nursery trees will bear much sooner. If you take good care of your tree with adequate

Mulberries Think of the mulberry as a “tree blackberry” and you’ll have a pretty good picture of this unique tree. If I were to pick one fruit tree I would plant above all others, this is it. It grows ridiculously fast, bears when it is young, yields baskets and baskets of berries, and tastes like sweet purple sunshine. The mulberry tree grows across most of the United States and is a consistent producer of delicious berries. I’m always amazed when people pick on mulberries as “messy.” That’s like saying, “You know, the Mississippi is a great river—what a shame it’s so damp!” As I say regularly, that isn’t a mess! That’s food! Mulberries are related to the fig, and like figs, will usually start easily from cuttings. Just don’t take cuttings when the trees are in fruit or getting ready to fruit in the spring. Something that’s really encouraging about this tree is that it has a juvenile period of almost zero. I’ve had tiny trees produce fruits. And when mulberries are young, they grow like weeds. They also respond very well to pruning. I’m trying different methods of tree shaping to keep the berries within reach for ease of picking. Untended mulberry trees can get tall quickly. If you have space and you’d like at least a few fruit within a year—and you want happy children—grow a mulberry. Right now. Go get one; you’ll love it. Especially in pies. Persimmons When you mention persimmons, one person might remember the small fruit he ate from a tree in his grandmother’s yard. Another person might remember being tricked into eating an
unripe (and thus horrible) persimmon from the Asian market. Another more favored individual may remember the honeyed delight of a delicious variety flown in from Israel. If you’ve been turned off by persimmons and the horror of cottonmouth, try a nice ripe Fuyu variety. To try it before you grow it, go to a higher-end supermarket in the fall and pick one up. They taste like tropical honey. If you want a persimmon with exceptional flavor for pies and preserves, try a Hachiya. The large, astringent fruits of this Japanese variety need to get soft, like pudding, before you eat them. If you’re more a native plant nut than a fruit-lover, plant American persimmons and the wildlife will thank you. Or grow all three, as I do. Unlike many other fruit trees that tend to burst into bloom during a warm spell, only to get their blooms frozen off by frost later on, persimmons are great at going dormant. They tend to drop their leaves in mid-fall, then stay comfortably nude and frost-proof until well into spring. While I’m out covering peach trees and running the sprinklers on my blueberries to save their blooms, the persimmons sleep uncomplainingly until they’re good and ready to wake up. They’re also easy to grow. With a little water and care, they’ll bear lovely fruit for years. Conclusion Did I pique your interest yet? Loquats, mulberries and persimmons are reliable, delicious, and beautiful. Every yard in Florida should have at least one of these three fruit trees. Collect all three—and you could harvest loquats in late winter and early spring, then mulberries after that, and then pick a crop of persimmons in fall. Even if you don’t like any of these fruits, plant them for your kids (or your grandkids) or to share at church or with your local food bank. Or just plant one to show your Yankee friends that Florida is good for more than just oranges and sand. Psychosomatic Medicine by Dr. Paula Koger, RN, MA, DOM
“If it is all in the head, that is good news—you can heal anything.” Dr. Lissa Rankin, MD, Mind Over Medicine: Scientific Proof You Can Heal Yourself For more than 20 years, I was a psychiatric nurse, nursing professor, and every other kind of nurse in an attempt to find my niche in the medical profession. I have always been on a path discovering solutions. I finally found my niche in acupuncture, energetic medicine, and treating illnesses psychosomatically (psycho=mind; soma=body). I am always interested and alarmed when patients tell me their doctor says their illness is “psychosomatic.” For the patient, it means it is all in their head, with the implication that what they are experiencing is made up and not real. For the doctor, it usually means s/he can find no evidence of pathology, and therefore, it must be imagined or somehow invented. I have come to appreciate the great gift a doctor gives a patient when s/he says it is “psychosomatic.” This can be taken as encouragement to look for the cause by exploring the emotional and belief components of the illness. (Or, one can just take drugs to numb the emotional pain.) Take peptic ulcers, for example. They are caused by the organism Helicobacter pylori. However, four out of five people colonized with this organism do not develop ulcers. What interests me is the elimination of the factors that cause it to develop. When I studied in Europe with Dr. Ulrike Banis, MD, ND, I learned to www.GoNaturalAwakenings.com
treat psychosomatic aspects of illness with homeopathy. I also studied the works of geniuses such as Dr. Derk Hamer, who has healed more than 14,000 cancer patients by healing the psychosomatic issues. He uses no chemo, radiation, or surgery, but addresses the “issues in the tissues.” Stresses block our energy, love, good health, and wealth from flowing into life and body systems. I had a patient with longstanding sciatic pain find it was related to emotional fear she had stored in her kidney. This fear was a block to the spine and nerves of the sciatic nerve, and had originated as a fear of love. The truth is, your body was designed to be healthy. You are meant to know love. Reaching your goals requires you to be clear physically, emotionally, and spiritually. When all three parts are equal and balanced, you not only feel good, but your life is happier and more complete. Dr. Bruce Lipton, internationally recognized biologist and author of The Biology of Belief, is a leader in teaching about the science of epigenetics. His scientific experiments prove that your stored perceptions or beliefs affect your life and health. His studies show that even if you have a gene for a certain disease, it is your beliefs that can turn the gene on or off. Beliefs stored in the subconscious mind have a significant impact on how successful you are at anything you attempt. Dr. Schaller, a psychologist at the University of British Columbia, states, “Once covertly activated, an unconscious goal persists with the same determination that is evident in our conscious pursuits. Sometimes nonconscious effects can be bigger in sheer magnitude than conscious ones,
because we can’t moderate stuff we don’t have conscious access to, and the goal stays active.” The subconscious part of the mind is below the radar of the normal operation mode of consciousness in our minds. Everything you have ever read, heard, thought, or imagined is held within the subconscious mind. This part of the brain works to record various experiences that we encounter in our lives. And, what you don’t know you know, can hurt you or at least hold you back. If you can find and release the memories and beliefs that are continuing to cause harm and blockages, your life can be transformed. Dr. Paula Koger specializes in finding and releasing the causes of blocks that cause disease and limitations in health, relationships, and careers. She uses Voice Mapping and diverse technologies. Call 941-539-4232 for more info. Dr. Koger will speak on June 9 at Unity Church in Gainesville on “Removing Blocks to Manifesting your Soul Mate and Finding Love.” All are welcome; a free workshop is included and one attendee will be chosen for a complimentary session.

Cardinal Virtues
A
t the Ocala Civic Theatre, we have a cardinal who has achieved quite a reputation. I do not mean that we have a senior ecclesiastical official who has taken to the stage and become notorious. I mean we have a redbird. A delightfully cheeky little redbird. I have named him Little Juju. Little Juju is a pretty little bird, a saucy bird, pert and pugnacious. He is a vivid scarlet, with a topknot so proud it borders on insolent. He is curious and interested, quite a busybody. And it must be admitted: He is full of himself. But he is so handsome that I can hardly blame him. I am very fond of him. One reason I like him so much, aside from the fact that I am fond of all things red, is because he too is drawn to vivid colors. His favorite color also is red, though he has expressed a strong preference for yellow and green as well. How do I know? Because these are the colors of the cars he targeted for his ministrations. Little Juju first came on the scene last summer. I usually park my car under an oak tree, and the top of my car is where he was first sighted. He developed a predictable routine: I would get to work in the morning, and as soon as I had reached the end of the sidewalk, I would look back to see him swoop down from the tree to perch atop my car, lordly and serene, the jaunty monarch of all he surveyed. He visited other cars, but returned
24
to mine as his home base. This was well-documented by witnesses. When I emerged from the building to leave each afternoon, I would see him sitting quite still on the roof of my car: quiet and peaceful, emitting the occasional
cheep, a well-behaved songbird. He would chirp a greeting at me, then fly up into the tree to watch me depart. Unlike the other cars he favored, Little Juju never left any little gifts on mine. Say what you will, but I know this is because he and I had established a good rapport. We had an understanding. I never fussed at Little Juju for using my car as his observation perch. Instead, I greeted him pleasantly. I addressed him politely by his name. I spoke sweetly to him. I told him he was pretty. I am Southern and I have worked in customer service; I understand these things. One charms a cardinal just as one charms a person, a raccoon, or a surly cat. It’s easy if you only try. I still believe that if Little Juju ever went gangster on your vehicle
or used it as his personal outhouse, it is probably because you talked ugly about him or harbored uncharitable thoughts. Certain people talked the worst kind of smack about him, just completely disrespectful. I understand Little Juju being mad and expressing himself forcibly. He sensed the animosity. Little Juju had to go out of his way to decorate other vehicles. My car was his primary base of operations, yet not once did he desecrate my car, which I think was very good of him. Recall that I was the only one who spoke pleasantly to him. I’m just saying. Considerate is as considerate does. What he primarily wanted our cars for, though, was heroic questing purposes. Like many cardinals, who all seem to have an uppity streak, Little Juju was given to attacking mirrors. Wings all a-blur, he madly went at our side mirrors like Don Quixote charging a windmill. “You want a piece of me?” his expression screamed. Perhaps when he singled out cars of his favorite colors for his jihad, he was giving vent to his feelings when the stubborn foe he saw fighting him in the mirror refused to be vanquished. I have not seen Little Juju for a while, but I firmly choose to believe he is still living on the grounds. To entertain thoughts otherwise would be unthinkable, for me, at least; I am the only one who misses him. I had hoped to further our relationship. I wanted to train him to perch on my finger and trill duets with me like the heroine in a Disney movie. But I think that ship has sailed, and now I would be content just for a sighting and a how-do. I like to think Little Juju has found himself a lady friend and is setting up housekeeping somewhere else on the property. Or perhaps he has moved his operations to the neighboring woods; maybe the scarlet women are prettier there. It’s springtime, and that means courting. But wherever he is, I hope he has found his Dulcinea. ©2013 Melody Murphy.

Personal Potential and the Power of Distinction by David Wolf, Ph.D.
P
ersonal potential. Who is a person with vast potential? This really is a vital question. Without clarity about it, or at least carefully considering it, we might find ourselves embodying the quote of former University of Texas football coach Darrell Royal: “Potential means you ain’t done it yet.”
Distinctions, Golf Clubs, and Powerful Questions Knowledge is power, and knowledge comes from being able to make distinctions. We can see this in any field of study or endeavor. For example, no one gets excited in my household when I take a turn at cooking. Apparently I lack proficiency in making distinctions with regard to spicing, combinations of ingredients, etc. An expert golfer makes fine distinctions between each of the clubs in his bag. For a non-golfer, a bag of 14 clubs might seem like, well, 13 too many. The most essential science, or pursuit, is the science of selfrealization. Thus, it makes sense that the capacity for distinction is crucial in our efforts at knowing ourselves, in realizing personal potential. Vedavyas, the compiler of the Vedas, a renowned source of ancient wisdom, stated, “The highest truth is reality distinguished from illusion for the welfare of all.” This applies, firstly, to ourselves. Unlocking our personal potential is intrinsically connected with differentiating reality from illusion within ourselves.
In applying this principle, we might productively ask ourselves questions such as “Where am I deceiving myself?” “What are my false assumptions?” “How do I limit myself?” “Where do I let fear get in
the way?” “What am I withholding?” “Where might I be in denial?” “What have I been avoiding?” “In what ways am I playing a small game?” “What am I being right about?” “Where am I asleep at the wheel?” “What am I settling for?” “Where am I incomplete?” “How do I sabotage myself?” and “Where am I selling out on myself?” “Why do I say ‘no’ to life and to myself?” To the extent that we realize ourselves as unique, with special contributions and purposes, we’ll be empowered to express our personal potential in distinctive ways. Often this requires courageous introspection to distinguish between that which is authentic, and what has been a convenient, albeit unsatisfying, facade. To quote Carl Rogers, “To remove

a mask which you had thought was part of your real self can be a deeply disturbing experience.” Insight, Action, and Realizing Personal Potential While the Satvatove process of Transformative Communication includes introspection leading to empowered action, we also emphasize action that itself inspires inner transformation. As Jerome Bruner said, “You’re more likely to act yourself into feelings than feel yourself into action.” With this in mind, consider an area where your personal potential has stayed in “potential” for a lot longer than you’re comfortable with. What are three things you could do in the next week to transform potential into fulfilling action? These could be small, even apparently insignificant acts. Still, express concretely what they are—mentally or, better yet, in writing, as people who write down their goals are substantially more likely to achieve them. Okay, now: of those three things, which of them are you ready to commit to actualize in the next week? To further solidify this exercise, consider sharing your commitment(s) with a friend, to engage them in supporting and challenging you in your process of transforming your personal potential into an extraordinary life of fulfillment and distinction. ©2013 David B. Red Quinoa and Spinach Salad
INGREDIENTS: 5-oz. package of fresh organic baby spinach leaves 1 cup dry Incan Red Quinoa, prepared and cooled (about 3 cups prepared) 1 cup coarsely chopped Shitake mushrooms 1 cup coarsely chopped pecans 1 cup raisins, golden raisins, or Craisins 1 cup freshly chopped cilantro 2/3 cup EACH slivered red, yellow and orange sweet peppers (1½ cups in total)
by Clark Dougherty
S
taying in a healthier recipe mode, I offer this month a delicious, vegan, and gluten-free salad. It features Incan Red Quinoa, baby spinach, citrus juices, cilantro, garlic, olive oil, sweet peppers, pecans, mushrooms and raisins/Craisins. Pay particular attention to specified chopping methods in preparation. Since quinoa is tiny and seed-like, I recommend using larger and more coarse chops to create a texture and taste contrast for the palate. Another worthy note is to use a very large salad bowl, or two big ones, in creating and serving the dish. This recipe easily feeds six to eight healthy, appreciative people. Enjoy!
DRESSING: 3 tbsp. extra virgin olive oil 2 tbsp. fresh lemon juice 2 tbsp. fresh lime juice 2 tbsp. finely chopped garlic Dash of Turbinado sugar Salt and pepper to taste ASSEMBLY: Prepare red quinoa per package directions, using 1 cup of the dry quinoa. Cool. Place baby spinach leaves
in two equal bowls or one very large one. Combine dressing ingredients in a large measuring cup, whisk vigorously until the oils and juices have incorporated. Pour dressing equally over spinach and toss to coat leaves thoroughly. Add cooled quinoa, pecans, mushrooms, cilantro, peppers, and raisins/ Craisins. Toss thoroughly, scooping red quinoa back to top at conclusion. Serve immediately.

INTERVIEW
with Jeff Primack Supreme Science Qigong by Deanna Cook Deanna Cook: Last month, we talked about what Qigong is and how to add this practice into our daily life for optimal wellness. We also discussed food chemistry and your book, Conquering Any Disease. Time and a full schedule are often a challenge, making it hard to eat perfectly or practice as much as one would like. What are the most important Qigong and dietary components for people with extra busy lives? Jeff Primack: When time is short I recommend cleansing your body with oxygen and energy first thing in the morning. After I wake up, I drink some hot tea outside, and do the 9-Breath Method five times. This method delivers large amounts of oxygen to the bloodstream. Gentle power breathing awakens the cellular vibration and stimulates metabolism. This is a quick and powerful method we spend hours thoroughly teaching at the Qi Activation conference. As far as food goes, look beyond fat, protein, carb, mineral, vitamin, enzyme, and follow God’s trail of white crystals into the apple core. The infamous fruit that started it all! Someone said an “apple a day keeps the doctor away.” Yeah, I say, but only
if you eat the crystallized core of phytochemicals which activates bone marrow‘s production of cytokines for immunity. Regardless of how busy your life is, I recommend: 1. Give up all dairy products. Replace with delicious healing ice cream, raw key lime pie, etc. 2. Have a smoothie every morning, with avocado and its big seed, apple with core, organic strawberries, etc. 3. Have big bowel movements. Eat squash, sweet potato and one “Good Belly” probiotic drink every day. 4. Have a watermelon fast once a month. Eat only watermelon all day to cleanse kidneys and urinary channels. Include eating/blending the white section, which contains L-citrulline, a precursor to nitric oxide, the body’s primary vasodilator. Fasting on watermelon has helped dissolve kidney stones for many people. Watermelon is not recommended for diabetics, cancer patients or people with sugar sensitive diseases. DC: The Qi Activation Conference is both experiential and educational. You seem to be at ease with speaking in front of so many. Was public speaking something that came naturally for you? JP: Talking about a pharmacy inside your own brain
28
and activating latent healing abilities happens to be very interesting. Every year I speak to thousands of people, so I get lots of practice and learn new ways to refine the way I deliver the information. Humor also plays a role in how I teach at these big events. In high school I was a class clown and studied ways to make people laugh. At every seminar participants tell me I remind them of Adam Sandler, but I can’t see it. “Qigong humor” is funny because we’re all so holistic and mental about the same issues, and sometimes we feel alone. Humor unifies people and that helps raise the energy. DC: How do you explain to people what is special about Qigong methods of fitness and muscular conditioning? JP: Qigong strength training is 100 percent nurturing to Qi, instead of taxing, like some traditional exercises. If you have old injuries, you can practice Qigong without any side effects. We use “Holding Qi” postures like Horse Stance to build the root chakra and leg strength of the body. When doing HyperThrows, we use extreme fast followed by slow “Pressing on Qi” movements which work wonders for circulatory issues and building muscle. These Yin and Yang alternating movements open arteries to expand blood flow beyond what traditional exercise is capable of. Qigong breathing and movements are merged into a mildly challenging fitness routine, and this Qi integration helps you to recover faster and go deeper than normal. DC: People say Orlando is your most powerful gathering because it draws thousands of aligned people for focused healing practice into one big room. How does the group energy effect of so many people’s energy in the same room make a difference? JP: A master known as Dr. Yan Xin was perhaps the most influential Qigong figure of all time. He facilitated 30,000-person Qi-lectures inside stadiums. Due to the huge collective energy at these stadium events, many expe-
Printed on recycled paper to protect the environment
rienced the deepest levels of Qigong within hours and many miraculous healings were reported. Historically speaking, Qigong went from being practiced by almost no Chinese people in the 1970s to a mind-blowing 200 million by the mid-1980s! This came to a screeching halt in 1999 when the Chinese government, for fear of an uprising, outlawed large Qigong events. I believe Qigong is God-connecting, humbling, healing to the spirit, and unifies people, which is something the Chinese government is not supporting now. America is different, and I am proud to live where we can do Qigong and have the right to gather in freedom. We want the secret of Qigong healing to get out! Thousands moving and breathing in sync is truly vivid and allows you to experience energy beyond what you could by yourself. Where two or more are gathered, seeds of love are scattered. DC: I see Reverend Michael Bernard Beckwith is your guest of honor this year. Can you tell me more about him? JP: Most know Michael from his leading role in the hit movie, The Secret. The United Nations is one of his speaking platforms, and he’s been on the Oprah show. Beckwith is a compelling figure, and he practices Qigong every morning. He’s leading a Qi Activation during the Orlando conference that he says will “blow the roof off the building.” Also joining the gathering is Dr. Roger Jahnke, OMD, a longtime expert of Qigong, who’s written numerous books and has extensive knowledge on Medical Qigong. I know everybody is busy and life is always pulling us to do our own thing, but you can decide to create time for yourself. Sometimes life only gives you so many chances like this. Interviewer Deanna Cook has owned several organic restaurants, is a holistic celebrity chef, and has appeared on the Food Network. Jeff Primack is a Qigong teacher who has studied with many Qigong masters from all over the world and has taught more than 40,000 people in live seminars. www.GoNaturalAwakenings.com
Desire
These five components each work together to create what we want in Thoughts life via physics wave theory. One Beliefs cannot create a desire directly from Felt Emotions outward actions without first aligning thoughts, beliefs, and felt emotions. Just like an echo in a canyon—when you yell “1,2,3,4” into Outward Actions the canyon you do not hear back “5,6,7,8.” You hear exactly “1,2,3,4.” This isn’t negotiable; it’s physics wave theory. If one desires (wants something)—health for example but doesn't think, believe, or feel health to be possible for them, physics alignment is not present and long term health cannot be created and/or maintained. GEt Your LifE Back, it’s timE to start LivinG aGain!
Here’s what some of our customers have to say about Dr. Emu’s Rx for Pain: “It totally resolved by back issues and knee pain in one day. I had back surgery twice and one knee replacement. I still had intense pain and my doctor said I would have to live with it. I use it every night and in the morning and I have not had pain in months. Thank you for a lifesaving product.” Darlene Masters “I ... was amazed at how good this is. It has taken away the pain from my hip/leg/ankle and reduced the swelling in my ankles I get every summer. Thank you!” Patty Mullins “I was told about this by my doctor’s office. It truly helped my back and knee pain. It is a little costly but well worth the extra cost over others in discount stores. It works so well, I don’t even need to use it as much now. Thank you for bringing it to us.” Tony S.
Experience All-Natural Pain Relief Like I Did “Through the years, accidents had left me with a crushed heel, seven herniated discs and a torn rotator cuff. I was spending $4,500 a month on medication prescriptions including for pain and became addicted to oxycontin. Finally, I decided not to allow drugs to control my life anymore. I became intrigued by an up-and-coming natural aid: Emu Oil. Out of personal necessity to get off drugs, aided by pain management doctors, other medical personnel, herbalists and lengthy research and development, I created the natural topical pain relief product, Dr. Emu’s Rx for Pain. It not only eased my pain within minutes, it also made my life more livable again. Since then, many physical therapists, chiropractors and pain management doctors have testified to its apparent effectiveness with their patients.” Darrell Hart, founder and CEO of Everlasting Health
