FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE What is Functional Medicine? By Dr. Michael J. Badanek, BS, DC, CNS, DACBN, DCBCN, DM(P)

F

unctional Medicine is patient-centered medical healing at its best. Instead of looking at and treating health problems as isolated diseases, it treats individuals who may have bodily symptoms, imbalances, and dysfunctions. As the graphic of an iceberg shows, a named disease such as diabetes, cancer, or fibromyalgia might be visible above the surface, but according to Functional Medicine, the cause lies in the altered physiology below the surface. Usually, the cause of the disease and its symptoms is an underlying dysfunction or an imbalance of bodily systems. Named diseases are just the tip of the iceberg. Below the surface, according to Functional Medicine, are the real causes of a patient's health problems. If health care treats just the tip of the iceberg, it rarely leads to long-term relief and vibrancy. Identifying and treating the underlying root cause or causes, as Functional Medicine does, has a much better chance to successfully resolve a patient's health challenges. Using scientific principles, advanced diagnostic testing, and treatments other than drugs or surgery, Functional Medicine restores balance in the body's primary physiological processes. The goal is the patient's lifelong optimal health.

How Functional Medicine Heals a Key Health Care Gap Today's health care system is in trouble because it applies a medical management model that works well for acute health problems to chronic health problems, where it is much less successful. If you have a heart attack, accident, or sudden lung infection such as pneumonia, you certainly want a quick-thinking doctor to use all the quick-acting resources of modern medicine, such as life-saving technology, surgery, and antibiotics. We are all grateful for such interventions. However, jumping in with drugs, surgery, and other acute care treatments often does not succeed in helping those with chronic, debilitating ailments, such as diabetes, heart disease, or arthritis. Another approach is needed. www.GoNaturalAwakenings.com

Robert Duncan

W

yoming’s wide-open spaces lassoed Robert Duncan’s imagination as a boy and never let go. Though he grew up in the suburbs of Salt Lake City, he spent cherished summers on his grandparents’ ranch, where his grandmother gifted him with his first set of oil paints. Today, his light-filled canvases portray the rural scenes and simpler way of life of the American West. Realistic and respectful of nature, indigenous cultures and the pioneer spirit that still permeate parts of the West, Duncan’s art gives visual testament to the quiet peace and beauty of rural living. “We all need nature in our lives,” Duncan believes. “The family farm is disappearing at an alarming rate. “I want my grandchildren to be able to walk through a field and hear a meadowlark’s song,” he says. He sees his paintings as a call to think about the things that touch our lives. “We don’t all have to live on a farm, but to pass by and see the cows grazing, or just to know that there are wild places being kept wild makes our lives better.” Robert Duncan’s art is held in private collections worldwide. A

new, noninvasive infertility treatment has met with highly favorable results. In a recent study published in the journal Midwifery Today, 40 of 48 women between ages 28 and 42 who underwent two or more sessions of Merciér Therapy achieved pregnancy within the first year; 32 of those used the method alone (no other artificial fertilization/insemination techniques). The four-year study was presented at the 2013 World Congress of Low Back and Pelvic Pain. The Merciér Method was developed by Jennifer Merciér, a midwife and holistic women’s health practitioner. The regimen includes six hours of pelvic organ massage manipulation, along with a supplement program and continuous monitoring. She explains, “Our protocol is a gentle and noninvasive visceral manipulation of the female reproductive organs that helps to increase general organ mobility and blood flow, which enhances optimal function.” A documentary on the protocol, Fertility: The Shared Journey with Merciér Therapy, premieres this month (MercierMovie.com).

Drinking Cow’s Milk While Nursing Linked to Infant Eczema

N

ew research has found that if a mother drinks cow’s milk during the period that she is breastfeeding, it raises her infant’s risk of experiencing skin allergies. The study, published in the Journal of the Medical Association of Thailand, followed 62 mothers and their infants from birth through 4 months of age. Researchers from Bangkok’s Mahidol University assembled the mothers and infants into two groups. Mothers in one group drank cow’s milk during the first four months of breastfeeding; the control group did not. Eight of the children with mothers drinking cow’s milk had skin allergies, versus two of the children in the control group. All of the mothers exclusively breastfed their infants throughout this period. An earlier study published in the British Medical Journal followed 124 mothers, 97 of whom breastfed their babies. Of those who breastfed, 48 drank no milk or other dairy products and 49 drank milk. Infants in the milk-drinking group experienced 21 cases of eczema, while the no-milk group had only 11 cases. Overall, between the breastfed and nonbreastfed infants, the breastfed infants had lower incidences of eczema regardless of the mother’s diet.

Healthy Homemade Infant Food Reduces Kids’ Allergies

A

study published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology reports that infants fed more homemade foods comprising a higher percentage of fruits and vegetables were less likely to develop food allergies. In assessing youngsters of the same age, researchers from the University of Southampton Medical College, in the UK, followed 41 children who had developed food allergies by the age of 2, alongside 82 non-allergic infants. After tracking the toddlers’ diets with food diaries and conducting allergy testing, the researchers found that infants fed more of the healthier homemade diet had a significantly lower incidence of food allergies as toddlers.

Vitamin D No Help for Bone Mass or Hip Fractures

U

niversity of Pittsburgh researchers who followed 29,862 women for 11 years have found that supplementing calcium with vitamin D does not reduce hip fractures. The study, published in the Journal of Women’s Health, found that women taking calcium plus vitamin D had as many hip fractures as women taking a placebo. Women supplementing with more than 600 international units (IU) of vitamin D per day also had a 28 percent higher incidence of breast cancer. Because hip fractures are linked to a reduction in bone density, these findings are compounded by a review of research published in The Lancet, which established that vitamin D supplements typically taken with calcium did not increase bone density among elderly adults. The review analyzed 23 studies among 4,082 participants, 92 percent of whom were women.

Roundup Toxin Accumulates in GM Soybeans

A

study published in the journal Food Chemistry tested soybeans grown from seeds that were genetically modified (GM) to be resistant to the herbicide Roundup. It compared these with organic soybeans and soybeans from non-GM seeds. The chemical and nutritional analysis of soybean samples from 31 different Iowa farms found the GM soy contained significantly higher levels of the toxin glyphosate, the central chemical in Roundup, than both the organic and the conventional non-GMO soybeans. The organic soybeans contained no glyphosate, plus significantly higher levels of protein and zinc, as well as lower levels of saturated fats.

Multivitamins with Selenium Counter HIV

A

study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association showed that a daily multivitamin supplement with selenium significantly slows the advance of HIV among those with the virus. The researchers tested 878 asymptomatic, HIV-infected people over two years who had never taken antiretroviral medications. The test subjects were split into four groups, with members of each receiving separate medications—multivitamins, multivitamins plus selenium, selenium alone or a placebo—for five years. The multivitamins contained vitamins B, C and E. Those given multivitamins plus selenium experienced a 54 percent reduction in low counts of a critical immunity cell factor (called CD4) compared to the placebo group. This group also experienced a 44 percent reduction in other events known to accompany the progression of HIV, including AIDSrelated deaths. The researchers concluded: “In antiviral, therapy-naive, HIV-infected adults, 24-month supplementation with a single supplement containing multivitamins and selenium was safe and significantly reduced the risk of immune decline and morbidity.”

FDA Finally Regulates Triclosan

T

he FDA, under a new court agreement with the Natural Resources Defense Council, has agreed to issue a new rule governing the use of Triclosan, a controversial antimicrobial agent used widely in consumer products, by 2016. The action was first proposed in 1978. Triclosan, a possible endocrine-disrupting chemical, has been found in three-quarters of people from whom blood, urine or tissue has been analyzed as part of bio-monitoring studies; it is also found in the environment after having passed through sewage treatment plants.

Sinking Reptiles

World Turtle Day Sounds Alarm Since 2000, people around the globe have celebrated World Turtle Day, held this year on May 23, to increase respect for and knowledge of the world’s oldest creatures. Susan Tellem, co-founder with Marshall Thompson of American Turtle Rescue (ATR), states, “These gentle animals have been around for about 200 million years, yet they are rapidly disappearing as a result of the exotic food industry, habitat destruction and the cruel pet trade.” They believe that turtles may be extinct within 50 years and suggest ways to increase their chances for survival for future generations: n Never buy a turtle or tortoise from a pet shop; it increases demand from the wild. n Never remove turtles or tortoises from the wild unless they are sick or injured. n If a tortoise is crossing a street, pick it up and gently place it on the other side in the same direction it was headed. n Write legislators about keeping sensitive habitats preserved. n Report cruelty or illegal sales to a local animal control shelter. n Report the sale of any turtle or tortoise less than four inches long, which is illegal throughout the U.S. For more information, visit Tortoise.com or Facebook.com/AmericanTortoiseRescue.

Greening Garbage

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, poor air quality can irritate the respiratory system, reduce lung function, inflame and damage the cells that line the lungs, make lungs more susceptible to infection, aggravate asthma, aggravate other chronic lung diseases and cause permanent lung damage. U.S. Forest Service researchers have discovered that the urban forests in 10 cities across the country save on average one person a year from pollutionrelated death. In New York City alone, that number increases to eight people per year. The scientists recommend that people everywhere plant more trees. Source: AmericanForests.org

Activist Turns City Food Waste into Rural Soil Jeremy Brosowsky had an epiphany at a Milwaukee, Wisconsin, greenhouse a few years ago that set him on a more sustainable path: “What if we could take our garbage and grow food in it?” He was in the Midwest to learn about urban agriculture at Growing Power, the pioneering urban farm of McArthur Genius Fellow Will Allen, and was considering starting a rooftop agriculture business. Allen’s emphasis on the importance and elusiveness of fertile soil intrigued him. “If you don’t dramatically improve the soil, you cannot grow food in cities,” Brosowsky realized. His solution was to create Compost Cab (CompostCab.com), a Washington, D.C.-based service that picks up and delivers urban food waste to local farms for composting. Nearly 100 cities already divert food waste from landfills, but Brosowsky emphasizes, “Composting is not just about waste reduction. It’s about food production, education, jobs and creating social benefits.” He hopes to roll out Compost Cabs in other cities.

Information Overload

Organic Food Labeling Causes Confusion A recent Harris Poll of 2,276 U.S. adults showed that concern for the environment is growing, but Americans may not be ready to spend more for organic food. More than half think that labeling food or other products as organic is just an excuse to charge more. Yet more than half of respondents also believe that organic foods are healthier than non-organic. At the same time, only 23 percent know what the term “dirty dozen” means in regard to organic food; it’s the Environmental Working Group’s annual list of foods consumers should always buy in organic form due to high pesticide levels in conventional farming.

Radical Fuel

Three Automakers Roll Out Hydrogen Models Toyota has announced that it will market a hydrogen-powered car beginning with the 2015 model year, and Hyundai has also committed to rolling out its fuel-cell Tucson model next year. Honda has already begun leasing its hydrogen-powered FCX Clarity to customers in California. Each of these vehicles can travel about 300 miles without a refill and reach a top speed of about 100 miles per hour. A refill takes just a few minutes, and because the hydrogen is used to produce electricity, the cars drive without the roar of an internal combustion engine. The cost of hydrogen-fuelcell vehicles is expected to continue to fall and eventually match that of conventional cars by 2023.

Toxic Skincare! by Nuris Lemire, MS, OTR/L, NC

“G

oing to the beach? Don’t forget your sunscreen!” “Be sure to brush your teeth!” “Make sure you wash behind your ears and shampoo your hair!” We have all heard these reminders to protect our skin from the sun, “enrich” our hair follicles with the latest and greatest shampoo, whiten our teeth. We do many things habitually, without thought. Who doesn’t use deodorant daily? How many women don’t use facial cleansers or moisturizers? Who doesn’t enjoy a hot, relaxing bath? More importantly, how many of us remember that the skin is the largest organ of detoxification, the most porous surface of the human body, and also one of the first lines of defense we have against our environment? Not many would be my guess. We have the tendency to forget that we owe a lot of our body’s safety to our skin. We try to take care of it and reduce the damage done to it by outside sources, yet we forget that many of the products we turn to for help are even more dangerous than not using them at all. We live in a toxic environment—one that is not limited to car exhausts and cleaning chemicals, but one which can also include our sunscreen, nail polish, toothpaste, deodorant, shampoo/conditioner, bath oils, facial cleansers/moisturizers … the list literally goes on and on, longer than this article permits. Every day we expose ourselves to things that can impede the natural function of our immune system, artificially accelerate the growth rate of our children, and cause damage to our kidneys, liver, lungs, and brains, to name a few important organs. One of the worst pills to swallow is www.GoNaturalAwakenings.com

that there is no real regulation of these items to date. The Food & Drug Administration (FDA) is the agency which is supposed to regulate the cosmetics industry, keeping the chemicals they produce from causing more harm than good. The FDA, however, states, “Cosmetic products and ingredients are not subject to FDA premarket approval authority, with the exception of color additives (other than those intended for use as coal-tar hair dyes) 1.” This sort of free reign to self-regulate is a contributing factor to what has led the industry astray. With the exception of color additives and a few prohibited substances, cosmetics companies may use any ingredient or raw material in their products without government review or approval. Here are some examples of known carcinogens and endocrine disruptors in the industry. n Phthalates – Invitation to early puberty. Uses: Plasticizer, solvent. Found in nail and cuticle products, blush, bath oils and more. n Triclosan – Hormonal toothpaste? Uses: Preservative, biocide. Found in toothpaste, eye shadow, deodorant, facial cleansers, body wash and more. Also called Phenol 5chloro2 (2,4dichlorophenoxy) – phenol; 2,4,4’-trichloro-2’- hydroxydiphenyl ether; and several other similarly confusing names. If you want to deliver medication fast, just put it under your tongue. It’s one of the most effective delivery systems doctors have. That’s one reason I can’t believe triclosan is in so many brands of toothpaste. It’s a proven hor mone-disruptor, and putting it in your mouth is a fast track to trouble. In animal studies, triclosan altered levels of thyroid hormones. Researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology found the same when they tested triclosan on human tissue. These hormones control everything from your growth rate to body temperature to blood pressure. So messing with them can spell big trouble. n Formaldehyde – Uses: Preservative, biocide. Found in nail polish, styl-

ing gel and more. Also called Formalin, Formic aldehyde, oxomethane, Methyl aldehyde, Merthaldehyde. Formaldehyde is dangerous at very low concentrations. In fact, the Environmental Protection Agency says just one part in 10 million can cause “watery eyes, burning sensations in the eyes and throat, nausea and difficulty in breathing.” Those reactions are enough to tell you to avoid products containing formaldehyde. But it gets worse. According to the MSDS for formaldehyde, it can damage your skin, liver and kidneys. And it’s suspected to cause cancer. A Hungarian study from March 2010 shows that formaldehyde also accelerates DNA damage and cell death. And here’s an awful surprise: you may be exposed to formaldehyde when it’s not even listed on the label. Would you purchase face cream that had a warning that it “may be absorbed through the skin with possible systemic effects” or use a sunscreen that came with a “corrosive” warning label? Not surprising if you said no, it would be crazy to do so. Unfortunately the manufacturers are not required to post the dangers of these ingredients publicly; they only have to warn their workers. Corrosive nature of some products aside, some of the common ingredients in popular cosmetics can disrupt hormones like testosterone and the ones that control children’s growth rate3. This article is not to dissuade you from using skin/hair/nail care products or to scare you into moving to a secluded island, it’s just to remind you that the skin is a vital organ. Don’t you think if you have trouble pronouncing an ingredient you should avoid putting it on your skin? clothing design can align perfectly with the colors, shapes, substances and energies of feng shui’s five elements. Because feng shui connects divine energy to physical form, I realized I could dress my clients’ spirits, as well as their surfaces.” Fashion Feng Shui, Maggiore’s international corporate legacy, maintains that combining intention and the five elements with awareness of our personal style attracts what we desire. Holistic image and lifestyle consultant and lead trainer Andréa Dupont, of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, states that the first step is discovering our “essence,” or primary element. “You can’t dress yourself until you know yourself. I ask clients, ‘If you could change one thing about your life, what would it be?’ Once we establish an individual’s inner strengths and core element, the results can be life changing.”

Green Choices

FENG SHUI FASHIONISTA Dressing with Conscious Intention by Gail Condrick

W

aking up on the morning of a big presentation to secure city funding for a new park, you’re confident that you’ve done your homework: You’ve prepared handouts, memorized key points of an environmental impact study and lined up community supporters. Opening the closet presents a different kind of challenge: What’s the most effective way to dress?

Dressing Our Essence

Wardrobe consultants who apply the principles of feng shui to clothing believe the jacket we choose to wear carries as much impact as our words. Clothing pieces and accessories selected with conscious awareness and intention can bring us into harmony and balance, energize our life, and transmit subconscious messages about our values. Feng shui clothing stylists believe the five elements of nature—wood, fire, earth, metal and water—connect in an unending cycle of harmony that keeps the world in balance. Following an authentic and harmonious lifestyle connects us with this cycle and the environment. As pioneering stylist Evana Maggiore observed in Fashion Feng Shui: The Power of Dressing with Intention, “I came to the conclusion that clothing is your body’s most intimate environment and energetically influences your life in the same way that your home and business décors do. Body coloring and shape, style, personality, lifestyle, goals and

12

For Denise Medved, of Hendersonville, North Carolina, owner of Feng Shui Style, wardrobe consciousness shows respect for our individuality and the environment. “When I choose to dress in natural fibers such as cottons, leathers, silks or wools, or their vegan complements in manmade fibers, it represents the life force of plants and animals and builds qi, or energy,” says Medved. She suggests assembling an outfit embracing three of the five elements. “A water/wood/fire triad might be black, woven, silk trousers; an organic, cotton, floral print shirt; and a red, recycled wool jacket. Personalizing this with the surprise of grandmother’s yellow stone pin on the lapel adds creative flair and earth and metal elements.” Nature’s jewelry energizes and circulates qi.

Reduce, Reuse and Recycle

Practicing the three basic tenets of sustainability together with principles of feng shui keeps our wardrobe and closet resonating with life. A wardrobe representing the five elements allows endless possibilities of creative combinations and reduces the need for having to keep up with new fashion trends. Shopping for such treasures at consignment and thrift stores, plus estate sales, allows us to reuse and repurpose clothing, energizing our budgets, closets and attitudes. Recycling items that pack closets and no longer suit our needs frees space and energy to create a wardrobe that is authentically ours. The Practical Encyclopedia of Feng Shui, by Gill Hale, also contains helpful advice for bringing out an intended inner message and making a statement. The color green conveys the wood element, or individuals that are public spirited and energetic. Red suggests fire, the color of inspiring leaders. Supportive and loyal earth personalities gravitate to khaki, while resolute, metal people may select grey. Natural communicators who view life holistically will be reflected in the water element of black. A feng shui philosophy provides guidelines for living in harmony with the natural world and in conscious awareness of life. Each choice expresses a stylistic living intention that will be noticed by the world. Gail Condrick is an archetypal consultant and Nia Technique faculty member. Connect at GaelaVisions.com.

Plaque Off! by Perry Ekstrand, DDS, LVIF, The Swedish Dentist

S

o here is the sad truth: If everyone brushed and flossed properly on a daily basis, I would be out of a job. One of my friends, a colleague who moved to a suburb of Washington, DC recently, told me that his patient base consists of yuppies with perfect teeth. so he mostly does check-ups. In northern Sweden, we had the worst dental health in the world back in the 1930s and ’40s. Today, after teaching children and their parents better oral hygiene, we have the best dental status in the world. Even if everybody did brush and floss properly, we dentists would still have some work to do. But the truth is, the bread and butter of any dental practice is decay, periodontal decease, and the long-term results thereof. Why do we get decay? Of course I was taught this in dental school, but I was also “fortunate” enough to be chosen for an experiment in which we could not brush nor floss for about 10 days (Yuck!), and we had to sip sugar water all day long to create a significant amount of plaque on our teeth. Then we measured the acidity of this plaque in different scenarios. This is what I tell my patients. I call it “Dentistry 101.” We have several bacteria in our mouths, and the one mainly responsible for decay is called Streptococcus Mutans. If you do not brush and floss, this little bugger will adhere to the tooth surface and multiply. It takes about 24 hours to build a plaque that has the ability to cause decay. When you eat or drink sugars (carbohydrates), whether “good” or “bad” carbs, these bacteria consume the sugar and produce lactic acid.

www.GoNaturalAwakenings.com

When the acidity of the plaque drops to pH 5.5, it starts to dissolve the enamel, just as battery acid from the battery in your car will eat a hole in your jeans. The plaque does this quickly. It takes just two minutes to lower the mouth pH to 5.5! Then it will take about 20 to 30 minutes before the saliva has diluted and rinsed away the acidity so that the pH climbs back to the north side of 5.5.

Think about this: you take one swig of a soft drink and in two minutes the decay starts. The teeth will decay for about a half hour, but before that time is up you have taken another swig. That means another half hour. If you are hooked on carbs and you feed yourself something every 30 minutes, your teeth will decay all day long. The short of it is you need three things for decay to happen: A tooth, bacteria, and sugar. If you remove one of these factors, decay will not happen. The choice is yours. Visit our private office setting for a cappuccino or espresso and meet the team that can help you find joy, function, and a more youthful you through mercury-free, biologic dentistry. faced with the question, “What are you not saying yes to?” pushed Teague to take a leap of faith—close her psychotherapy practice and enroll in a filmmaking class. Teague recognizes that a deeper wisdom activated her response. She observes, “The individuals I was counseling about their restless desire for something better mirrored my own discontent, and my restlessness was an emotional response to what was emerging. “Today, I no longer concern myself with making the right decision. I trust that whatever the circumstances are, I need to listen, observe and reflect, because ‘now’ contains information for my next step,” she advises. Amanda Owen, counselor, coach and author of Born to Receive: 7 Powerful Steps Women Can Take Today to Reclaim Their Half of the Universe, has studied the state of receptivity that Teague references. Owen explains, “Receiving is a dynamic and productive state. When the body is relaxed and the mind and nervous system are calm, we become receptive and can feel and intuit subtle information contained in the energy received from external and internal environments.

Trust Your Intuition Listen to that Still, Small Voice and Let it Lead You by Linda Sechrist

What if you could consistently tap into answers to life’s problems when you need them, knowing deep down that you are on the right track and that the decisions and choices you are making are the correct ones?

O

ur body is a wellspring of priceless wisdom. Yet heeding our innate voice seems constantly tested as society distracts us with the busy acquisition of external knowledge and rewards more visible work. Those used to focusing outwardly over-stimulate their five senses and so tend to disconnect from their body’s deep innate intelligence—our sixth sense, also known as intuition. The resulting joylessness, discontent, isolation, depression and illness have sent millions in search of a real solution that discerning experts believe already exists within. Our ultimate guide to the fountain of personal health and happiness, they believe, could well be our own intuition.

Changing Directions

For years, Katie Teague, producer of the documentary film, Money & Life, lived with the consequence of sublimating her intuitive impulse. “I felt a restless itch in my soul,” relates Teague, who intuited that life was prompting her to change careers so she could use her talents in a more meaningful way. The vision of her 94-year-old self lying on her deathbed and

“Our parasympathetic nervous system is engaged when we’re in this listening state. In contrast, rushing through the day engages our ‘fight-or-flight’ sympathetic nervous system. Busyness and mind chatter drown out the valuable information that intuition provides,” Owen notes. An intuitive energy therapist, Marilyn Eppolite strongly relies on intuitive guidance in her southern New Jersey practice, believing it emanates from her body’s intelligence. “I listen and it’s always present,” she says. Eppolite shares an example of a time she received a clear image and perceived the bodily sensations of a grieving small child from a female client a psychotherapist had referred. “When I described what I was sensing, her tears flowed and she also connected to the feeling,” she says. “It provided the needed breakthrough she needed to access her feelings and move forward in therapy.” Eppolite is keenly aware when roadblocks—busyness, willfulness, and a fearful, restless mind—create interference. “These feed each other and can rarely be separated. I can’t hear or feel my intuition when my energy and attention are willfully directed outward,” she observes. Abandoning the drive for personal control and surrendering to stillness is how Eppolite signals her body’s intelligence that she’s ready for whispers of guidance. “I sense that surrender as strength and trust that the information received is for my greatest good, even if I don’t fully understand it,” she remarks. “Discernment is necessary because deep wisdom frequently comes in segments that I must piece together and put into action before more of it bubbles up from within.”

INTUITION UNLEASHED Spend time with your feelings: Write down how you feel about your job, relationships, house, health and what’s going on in the world. Build and strengthen feeling receptors: Choose one feeling and spend the day with it. Notice every time you see that feeling expressed in yourself or someone else. Don’t judge it or form an opinion about it; just notice. Receive everything: Pay attention to what you are feeling. Don’t worry about what you will do with what you feel or your thoughts about those feelings. Just receive them. You can decide later what you want to do with them. Maintain a flexible “thermostat”: When you want to freak out or shut down, check in with your feelings instead. Be present, engaged and genuine. The feeling and associated intuition need your attention and the present is the time to attend to them. Source: Adapted from Born to Receive, by Amanda Owen

The Biggest Medical Con: Heart Disease & Cholesterol by Dr. Michael J. Badanek, DC, BS, CNS, DACBN, DCBCN, DM(P)

I

n this issue we are going to just scratch the surface of the biggest con ever sold to the American consumer/ patient: cardiovascular (heart) disease. We Americans are losing the battle with this dreaded disease which takes more than 150,000 every year—cardiovascular disease ranks in the top two causes of deaths in America, next to cancer. But why are we still plagued with these staggering numbers of fatalities in the most technologically advanced medicine system on the planet? Let’s delve into just some of the myths and misconceptions in this most concerning topic of health care. Even after 34 years of clinical practice in alternative, functional medicine, I’m still amazed at the lack of knowledge and poor treatment protocols for patients with heart disease. It’s as if the Modern American Medicine model of diagnostic techniques and treatments are absolutely off track. The American consumer is now taking more medications and undergoing more invasive testing and treatment procedures than ever, with virtually the same outcomes. Could it be that maybe, just maybe, the allopathic profession is totally off course in this situation? Let’s take the biggest and most ridiculous example of all, “cholesterol.” Not long ago, fasting cholesterol levels were considered to be “normal” up to and including 240. Then in the late 1990s, a panel of nine prominent medical people stated that we should change the levels to 200 or lower in the fasting state. The world’s greatest medical minds were shocked and www.GoNaturalAwakenings.com

stated that if you lower the fasting level to 200 or lower, we would see an epidemic in cancer. Well, they were right. Within five years—around 2005—cancer surpassed heart disease until about 2010. (From 2010 to the present, heart disease is back to number one.) Just what happened? Of the nine medical experts who changed the recommended fasting cholesterol results from 240 to 200, seven were board members of drug companies who produced statin (cholesterol lowering) drugs. Go figure. How corrupt is that? We know that statin drugs are the number one best-selling prescription medication in America today. We also know that there is a new push to lower cholesterol to 170 in the fasting patient, and that we even have children on these medications—absolutely ridiculous. So what is so bad about cholesterol levels lower than 200? Well, let’s look at why you need cholesterol and see if it really is bad for you. n The body needs cholesterol to produce all hormones. If the levels fall below 190 fasting, there is a good chance of a deficiency of hormone production. n The brain is composed of onethird of its total weight in fat (cholesterol). If there is not enough cholesterol, you get brain dysfunction and premature brain shrinkage, leading to memory loss (short or long term) and brain dysfunction. n The lining of the nerves, myelin sheath, is comprised with cholesterol— if deficient, the nerves short circuit. n Every cell in your body has cholesterol in the cell membrane—if not present in significant amounts, cellular atrophy occurs and receptor sites on the cell membranes dysfunction. n Cholesterol must be present in significant amounts or your body cannot produce adequate amounts of Vi-

tamin D-3, a hormone which regulates 10% of the 25,000 genes in your body. n Unfortunately, statin drugs poison the liver’s ability to produce cholesterol, and in so doing blocks the body in proper production of bile salts to break down fats for digestion, alters the assimilation of essential fatty acids, blocks the production of Vitamin D-3, and most importantly shuts down the production of one the most important products for energy production of all muscles including the heart (Co-Q-10). What is now plaguing Americans in the form of heart diseases are severe nutritional deficiencies from medications which cause heart failure, due to the lack of energy produced by the mitochondria in the form of ATP (adenosine Triphosphate). We have just traded seats on the sinking Titanic and have not accomplished anything with the advent and administration of statin medication. As a matter of fact we are now plagued with more diseases of the nervous system, cardiovascular system, endocrine system, and cancer with the indiscriminate administration and use of these cholesterol lowering medications. Remember, cholesterol does not cause cardiovascular disease. The real culprit is inflammation. Its major contributing factor are elevated levels of insulin, homocystine, and carbohydrates (sugar). If a person is older than 70 and the cholesterol is under 200, that individual has a tenfold greater chance of developing cancer and a fivefold greater chance of dying of infection either by bacteria or virus. Contact Dr. Badanek for a courtesy consultation to have these issues addressed by the means of alternative and functional medicine. Visit www. alternativewholistichealth.com or call 352-622-1151.

Patient Centered Health Care by Paula Koger, BSN, MA, DOM

“P

atient Centered Health Care” means the patient is the boss of his own health care. It’s time to examine what it does and doesn’t do. These days, we don’t know who or what to trust. We must learn to trust ourselves and participate in staying well. You deserve to understand what you can do to get well and improve daily. Americans die younger and experience more injury and illness than people in other rich nations, despite spending almost twice as much per person on health care. That was the startling conclusion of a major report released earlier this year by the U.S. National Research Council and the Institute of Medicine. Here is currently what is in the way of improving our health: 1. Our “quick fix” culture 2. Limited awareness of the cause of disease 3. Treating symptoms rather than cause 4. Lacking information about how to avoid illness and heal ourselves 5. Distrusting healing and what is involved 6. Resisting change 7. Expecting the practitioner to do it for us 8. Expecting to do what you have always done and get different results

18

9. Protecting our secrets 10. Wanting to stay like everyone else 11. Ignoring our feelings and guidance Those are bold things to say. I was born bold—it’s my job. When I found myself in the system unable to progress in health at age 45 and having difficulty getting out of bed, I decided it was time for me to take charge of myself. I’ve had to look at life and see what worked and what did not work. I couldn’t stay in the box, I was dying! Now I am living in the knowledge of my light, happy, mobile, athletic self. I have had people walk in nearly dead from Lymes and other infections or conditions resulting from not having strong immune systems and having been beaten by life and their unhandled stresses. They are alive, well, and very productive people now. You see, sickness is most often hiding our gifts. What they did that is absolutely necessary—they took charge and participated, all-out, with no doubts. They eliminated the cause of disease and let the body heal itself. My job is to help them learn how to identify the cause and release it. As we do, you release the stresses one layer at a time until you are stressfree. When the body does not have to deal with these stresses, it can be well because its natural intelligence takes

over. How much stress do you have? Everyone is different, and each person takes as long as they take to be stressfree. Some people have negative patterns the size of a thread; others, the size of a bungee cord. You are an individual with individual needs. You simply have to deal with yourself—and you can, with the right support. Your symptoms now are evidence of your stress pattern, and if you suppress them, they amplify disease. Often people call me and say, “I have been everywhere and done everything. Can you help me?” My answer is, “only to the degree you will participate and allow me to help you.” Recently, I realized everyone needs to know how to relieve and release their stresses on a daily bases. I am teaching patients how to do this. Most people do not know how to identify what underlies the stress that is showing up in their life. So how do you find out the causes of your stress? The best way I have found is to use computer software combined with kinesiology. The software is programmed to identify unconscious stress-producing factors causing your disease if unaddressed. Usually they are lifetime patterns that have been going on since early childhood. With muscle testing and software programmed to detect and release blocks, you then peel them away like an onion until you are fully who God made you to be. LIVE YOUR SONG It Keeps You in Tune with Yourself by Jill Mattson

L

isten to a traditional West African Griot story: When a tribal woman knows she is pregnant, she goes into the wilderness with a few friends to pray and meditate until they hear the song of the child. They recognize that every soul has its own vibration that expresses its unique flavor and purpose. When the women attune to the song, they sing it out loud. Then they return and teach it to everyone else. When children are born into the tribe, the village community gathers and sings their song, one unique melody for each unique child. Later, when children begin their education, the village again gathers to chant each child’s song. They sing upon the initiation of adulthood and at the time of their marriage. If at any time someone commits a crime or aberrant social act, the villagers will circle the individual and chant their song, recognizing that the proper correction is love and the remembrance of identity, because when you recognize your own song you have no desire or need to do anything that would hurt another. Finally, when the soul is about to pass from this world, family and friends gather at the bedside, as they did at birth, and sing the person to the next life. In any culture, a friend is one who knows our song and sings it to us when we have forgotten it. Those who love us are not fooled by the mistakes we’ve made or the dark images we hold about ourself. They remember our beauty when we feel ugly; our whole-

www.GoNaturalAwakenings.com

ness when we are broken; our innocence when we feel guilty; and our purpose when we are confused. Life always reminds us when we are and when we’re not in tune with ourselves. When we feel good, we are matching our song. We may feel a little wobbly at times, but so have all the great singers. If we just keep singing, we’ll find our way home. In the end, we shall all recognize our song and sing it well. Modern pioneers in vibrational energy like Sharry Edwards (bioacoustic biology) and Donna Eden (energy medicine) have independently detected that each of us has a fundamental signature frequency that can be equated to our unique song that persists throughout life. We innately seek natural sounds that reinforce and strengthen our song, such as the surf, wind, or birds. Even the stars and heavens offer songs out of our hearing range that benefit cell-tocell vibrations within that we intuitively feel as the magic of a midnight sky. At one with the universe, our song contributes its part in the infinite chorus of creation. Jill Mattson is an author, artist, musician and sound healing composer. Her books and CDs, based on 20 years of studying ancient civilizations, support healing and personal growth. Connect at JillsWingsOfLight.com. The Griot story is based on an interpretation by Jane Maluka and Dan Millman.

The Healing Power of Massage

From Body Repair to Reversing the Blues by Case Adams

n 1886, Dr. William Murrell stated in the British Medical Journal, “Massage is of such inestimable value in the treatment of many intractable diseases that it is regretted that so little is known about it in this country, and that it is so rarely employed as a therapeutic agent.” A 2013 survey by the American Massage Association (AMTA) showed that a majority of us are choosing massage therapy to treat such conditions as stress and pain management, according to Winona Bontrager, the association’s immediate past president. Of 1,007 adults surveyed, 75 percent opted for it within the previous year for stress or medical reasons, and 88 percent view massage as effective for pain relief. “A growing body of evidence shows that massage therapy can be effective for a variety of health conditions,” reports Bontrager, adding that massage is rapidly becoming recognized as an important part of health and wellness. Cody Landis, a licensed massage therapist and instructor at the Swedish Institute’s College of Health Sciences, in New York City, explains, “In the last

20

few years, massage therapy research has been focusing more on the mechanisms by which the potential health benefits may be occurring—looking at the response of the brain, the immune system and the mechanisms of repair inside of muscle cells themselves.”

Relieves Stress

An AMTA survey reported that 32 percent of positive respondents used massage to relieve stress, and numerous recent studies have confirmed this. Research from Harvard Medical School shows that massage reduces pain and anxiety while increasing sleep and quality of life among metastatic cancer patients. Boston Medical Center researchers saw similar results among 60 cancer patients who underwent port placement surgery; 20-minute massages before and after surgery reduced participants’ stress and anxiety. Australian researchers reporting in the Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery found that massage reduced pain, anxiety and muscle tension following heart surgery among

A study from Nashville’s Meharry Medical College of 43 HIV patients revealed that Swedish massage reduced their symptoms of depression. Lead researcher Russell Poland, Ph.D., a professor of psychiatry and biobehavioral sciences, observes, “When we designed the study, we didn’t expect to see such a large effect of massage. We remain surprised.” The benefit was echoed by a University of California-Los Angeles study of 95 volunteers who displayed increases in their production of oxytocin hormone simultaneous with reductions in adrenocorticotropin hormone. Oxytocin is linked to compassion, empathy, maternal affection and social connection, while lowered adrenocorticotropin means less stress.

Relieves Pain

Researchers in the Gynecology and Obstetrics Department of Brazil’s University of Sao Paulo studied 46 birthing women and determined that lumbar massage during labor reduced pain by 27 percent. In another study at Beijing’s Chinese PLA General Hospital, deep massage brought relief to 64 patients suffering from chronic low back pain. Relief was reported by a third of 110 headache patients in a Turkish medical school study. Dhaka Medical College Hospital, in Bangladesh, found similar results in a study of 500 headache sufferers, many of whom had migraines. Research from the University of Miami’s School of Medicine showed that massage reduced arthritis pain and increased both grip strength and range of motion among 42 rheumatoid arthritis patients. Lead researcher Tiffany Field, Ph.D., director of Miami University’s Touch Research Institute, says, “We have known that massage therapy reduces substance P, [a neuropeptide] which causes pain, and that it increases serotonin, the body’s natural pain

Printed on recycled paper to protect the environment

killer. We also know that deep sleep is critical to lowering substance P, increasing serotonin and reducing pain.”

What Researchers Now Know Breast Cancer: A French study of 129 breast cancer patients found massage generally reduced lymphedema, a swelling of the lymphatic system, following treatments. The total reduction of lymphedema volume was 33 percent among those receiving massages, according to Gynecologic Oncology.

Expands Acceptance

Lucy Liben, dean of massage therapy at the Swedish Institute, affirms the recent research as evidence documenting the numerous health benefits of massage therapy. “More and more consumers are seeking massage therapy for help with a variety of medical issues and conditions. Doctors are increasingly referring patients for such treatment and hospitals are enlisting more therapists to provide care for patients,” says Liben. “Perhaps most importantly,” she adds, “research is offering us guidance in our work as massage therapists in how to provide the most effective care for chronic pain or musculoskeletal problems, during cancer treatment, during the changes of pregnancy or for any number of other health-related issues.”

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome: Thirty minutes of massage with trigger point reduced symptoms and improved function in a study of 21 carpal tunnel patients (Journal of Bodywork and Movement Therapies). Constipation: Massage therapy increased the average number of bowel movements among 33 hospitalized Korean children, as reported in the Journal of Korean Academy of Nursing. Dementia: Research from Spain’s Extremadura University on 120 institutionalized elderly adults diagnosed with dementia found massage therapy generally helped improve behavior and sleep. Migraines: Craniosacral massage reduced migraine occurrence in a study of 20 migraine sufferers from Iceland’s University of Akureyri, as published in Complementary Therapies in Clinical Practice. Osteoporosis: A study of 48 postmenopausal women receiving traditional Thai massage showed increased bone formation after just four weeks. The massage group’s serum P1NP levels—which assesses bone formation—increased by 15 percent, while the control group saw no increases (BMC Complementary & Alternative Medicine). Stroke: Massage therapy tended to speed rehabilitation after strokes for 45 Russian patients in a study published in Vopr Kurortol Fizioter Lech Fiz Kult.

Qigong Teachings on Fitness and Food Reaching Your Highest Energetic Potential in One Lifetime by Qigong Practitioner Jeff Primack

Q

igong is about breath mastery. The best schools emphasize breathing to remove blockages and build a surplus of energy. Through training in abdomen placement, you can increase your body temperature and blood circulation on demand. When someone lays hands on another person while doing tumo breathing, it can send profound waves of healing qi into that person. “God formed man of the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.” Genesis 2:7 Does it weaken our connection to Spirit if we are breathing shallowly? Scripture suggests a connection with being alive and breath incoming through our nostrils. What if we breathed consciously and deeper all day? Qigong is about getting high, naturally. Alcohol transforms the mindstate, yet also destroys the liver. Qi

22

has no side effect except making you feel full of vitality. Its highs are beyond words. With focused practice, most people can move qi, causing a mild to intense euphoria. Qi, being free, abundant, and right under our noses, make it the ultimate ally to rise above life’s obstacles and reduce stress. Qigong Strength Training is nurturing to qi instead of taxing like some traditional exercises. If you have old injuries, you can practice Qigong. We use “Holding Qi” postures like Horsestance to build the root chakra and leg strength. When doing HyperThrows we use fast followed by slow brushing movements which work wonders for circulatory issues, building speed/ strength and giving a burst of energy. Yin and Yang alternating movements open arteries to expand blood flow beyond that which traditional exercise is capable.

Anyone can do Qigong Strength Training, even the severely injured. Mike Maier, retired fighter pilot and martial arts seeker, was so badly injured he couldn’t hold his arms above his head for more than 10 seconds. He came up to me at our 2,000-person National Qigong Conference to complain of his discomfort. As we were talking, I advised his body was adaptogenic and building new neurons, preparing his arms for the next time he would be holding the postures. Six months later Mike became an advanced teacher of our Qigong Strength Training. I personally watched him do 200 pushups, prerequisite for passing that certification; he couldn’t do even one pushup before meeting us! Qi moves blood and helped move circulation into his torn shoulder along pathways that were previously blocked. This is an example of how Qigong can heal. Enlightenment requires a body that can hold light. Fitness is not only about muscles; it’s about the nervous system. Your lower abdomen is the seat of what Qigong calls your “Dan Tien,” and it’s your center of gravity, housing the majority of vital energy. It wasn’t until I learned pranayama breathing that I experienced being one with the Universe. My whole body filled with blissful electricity that hummed inside me. For a time I was one with spirit and matter and I knew I was going to dedicate my life to teaching how to access this bliss naturally. Yogis describe nirvana as a mind-state where we access our Super Consciousness. From these higher vibration states we can receive divine insight and creativity. Food is the key to the qi! Diseases like autism, cancer and Alzheimer’s are increasing at an alarming rate. Fruits, vegetables, tonic herbs, and medicinal mushrooms contain phytochemicals that unlock our body’s endocrine system and act as sparkplugs to the immune system. Unfortunately, many people do not get enough of them. Phytochemicals are most concentrated in the parts of the food that we often throw away: the seeds, stems, skins and rinds of the fruits and vegetables we eat. Many eat the right foods, but throw away the parts with all the “medicine.”

For instance, we blend the avocado “with the big seed” in a high-powered blender along with other good tasting fruits and veggies. The avocado seed is tasteless, has the life force potential to create a huge tree, and more soluble fiber than any food for scrubbing plaque out of the arteries. Qigong teaches the principle ‘specific foods REVERSE specific diseases.’ Asparagus with its ridiculously high glutathione can help the body reverse cancer and improve phasetwo detoxification. Bitter melon is a blessing to the diabetic, but normally hard to eat with its bitter taste. That is no longer a problem with the scrumptious bitter melon recipes we have for the diabetic community. We recently held a special seminar and served many of these recipes to the attendees. A few people were fighting over who got to eat more bitter melon curry. Mulberries by David Y. Goodman

S

ome years back I visited my friend Pastor Phil as he tended his strawberry patch. Bermuda grass had crept in, along with various other irritating weeds, and he was patiently working his way through a 20-foot by 20-foot square. I’d never seen anyone grow strawberries at home in quantity. I’d seen them here and there in barrels or in pots on porches, providing the owners an occasional berry in passing. Phil, however, was regularly getting a few buckets of berries a week and allowing friends, family and parishioners to pick what they wanted. I told him I was impressed with the scale of his strawberry patch and how productive it was, but Phil shook his head. “I like the berries— but not the work. It’s just not worth it. This is probably the last year for me. I’m going to just mow it from now on.” I was horrified. Why would anyone in his right mind do that? A few years later, I tried my hand at growing a big patch of strawberries. I dug in manure and compost, mulched and watered them well, weeded as needed and basically slaved away for a year to get a few measly gallons, when I got any at all. The sun wilted the berry plants during the day and critters stole the strawberries at night. After two years of working at it, I gave up on my low-yield berries and planted the beds with vegetables. Phil was right. It was not worth it. Have you been in that situation? Have you grown strawberries and become frustrated? Or tried blueberries but had problems with pH? Or planted black-

24

berries only to fail on the upkeep? Quit failing and start growing easy berries! Introducing the World’s Greatest Berry Factory Forget berries that creep, grow on canes, or live in fussy little bushes.

If you want all the smoothie material your organic heart desires, plant a mulberry tree. The mulberry is a mid-sized to-large tree that produces enough fruit to keep your freezer stocked with gallons of delicious antioxidant-rich goodness yearround. As a fruit, the mulberry is much like a blackberry, but generally sweeter. They’re also super-easy to grow in Florida. If you have a male mulberry tree, it will only bloom and you won’t get fruit.

If you buy a selection from a nursery, however, and it says it’s a “fruiting” type, then you’ll be getting a female. If there aren’t any male trees to pollinate the tree, it will still make fruit—they’ll just be seedless. Some mulberries are very easy to start from cuttings, some are not. If you find a good tree to snag some cuttings from, try it and see how you do. I’ve gotten mixed results that seem to be related to the time of year. Mine never want to take when they’re about to fruit—my guess is that they’re too interested in producing berries. Young mulberries grow really fast. I have two trees in my yard that both started as 18-inch bareroot seedlings three years ago. They’re now towering (and I do mean towering—one of them is at least 20 feet over my head), and they’re currently loaded with fruit. If you’re health-conscious and also value local food, having a source of no-care berries is a winwin. Mulberries, with their quick move into production, will beat your other fruit trees by a couple of years, making them an excellent addition to your yard, provided you don’t plant them right over a driveway or car parking area—the berries you miss will leave purple splatters. In my nursery, I tend to sell out of mulberry trees once people taste one or hear how incredibly easy they are to grow. As a bonus, they’re great for chicken runs, since your birds will gobble berries as fast as they fall. If you want to grow your own organic berries without all the hard work, get a mulberry tree. Come to think of it, maybe I should mail one to Phil. Would you like to get a mulberry tree of your own? Or perhaps a pomegranate, persimmon, chestnut, cassava, or any number of other delicious and easy edibles for Florida? Visit David’s nursery booth at the Hwy. 326 Community Market in Ocala every Thursday from 3-7pm at 2250 NE 70th St, Ocala. Get Over Your Selfie

O

ne of my greatest pet peeves is the excessive use of the selfie. Before my mother and grandmothers ask—and for any readers of a certain age who, blessedly, might not know—a selfie is a picture you take of yourself, generally using the camera on your phone. Hence, a “selfie.” I am not against every instance of the selfie. I have even taken the occasional selfie, when all the stars aligned and my hair cooperated with me and I needed to immortalize this fortuitous confluence of events. If the planets aligned with the stars and I actually got a good selfie, I might use it as my profile picture on Facebook. But you will never see a steady stream of me making fish-lips at you in your news feed, because I am a selfrespecting grown person and I am not that fond of having my picture taken even in the best of circumstances. I am decent-looking when I fix myself up, but I am not one of those fortunate, naturally beautiful people who look stellar from all angles and in all lights and at all times of day. I am reasonable and self-aware enough to know that, and vain enough to care too much to post a remotely unflattering picture of myself. The older we get, the less we care to turn a high-def gaze upon ourselves. Right after I got glasses last summer, I made the mistake of walking into the

www.GoNaturalAwakenings.com

bathroom with them on and looking in the mirror. I shrieked. The combination of bright overhead lighting and suddenly enhanced vision is not a kind one. I took them off immediately and have not made that mistake since. Thus, I do not need to see my own face in HDR at an awkwardly close angle. It does not make me feel good about my appearance. What I need is for you to hold the camera and stand farther away than the length of my arm. And then we will put a nice soft Instagram filter on it and call it a day. Mainly, I think there are far more attractive and interesting things out there in the world than my own face, and I prefer to seek those things. If we’re friends, you know what I look like. Let me show you something else instead: flowers, fires, sunsets, beaches, birds, Easter eggs, Christmas trees, birthday cakes, old houses, paintings, architecture, autumn leaves, churches, carnivals lit up at night, dogs, duck ponds, sunlight through Spanish moss. There are exactly five selfies on my Instagram account and eight in the history of my Facebook page. They are from when I got glasses, when I got my chipped tooth fixed, at a Halloween party, and several rare instances in which my hair cooperated with me of its own free will. Such a momentous event is rare and must be commemorated, like a comet or a talking platypus.

And one was on the beach at sunrise last fall. I wanted pictorial proof that I got up and went out early enough to attend a sunrise, and I wasn’t about to hike down the beach to disturb a stranger in their dawn’searly-light reverie to get it. It seemed like a vain idea. I really don’t mind the occasional selfie, if you’re doing something interesting or there’s something specially worth capturing. But my Lord, I don’t need to see you daily sitting in the driver’s seat of your car. I don’t need to see you lying in bed, alone or with company. I don’t need you to post sad-looking pictures of yourself when you’re feeling down; I realize that you are visually underscoring the expression of your feelings, but you have just conveyed that in words and emoticons with your vaguely morose status update, and this is just overkill. Most of all, I don’t need you simpering at me in my news feed with pouty duck-faces that are your idea of sultry. You look like you’re coming on to the several hundred people who are your Facebook friends. Stop it. That’s just creepy. I believe vanity is a big reason behind the Overselfie, but there are different kinds of vanity. One kind causes you to gaze upon yourself a great deal because you believe yourself to be very good-looking. The other kind causes you to constantly inspect your appearance because you are very insecure and keep checking the details of your image to make sure everything is as you believe it should be. This kind needs a lot of reassurance. I’m never sure which kind of vanity is behind the Overselfie, but either way, my advice is this: Turn the camera around. Focus your gaze outward. FOCUS YOUR GAZE OUTWARD. There are many beautiful and intriguing things in the world; you are sure to be one of them, but come on. Get over yourself(ie) a little.
