healthbriefs Looking at Beautiful Art Bumps Up Brain Activity
R
esearchers from Japan’s Oita University have found that aesthetic appreciation of paintings may be linked to altering activities in specific areas of the brain. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans of 39 people were taken as they looked at slides of still life and landscape paintings by 19thcentury French painters and slides of photographs that closely replicated the paintings. While the subjects considered both the paintings and the photographic analogs to be beautiful during the experiment—with no significant differences between them—the most beautiful paintings were rated significantly higher than their corresponding photographic analogs in the pre-experimental phase. The researchers cite this as evidence of feeling greater pleasure from the paintings. The MRIs showed that during the experiment, portions of the brain’s frontal lobe related to emotions, memory, learning, and decision-making were activated. However, when the researchers compared the positive effects of aesthetic appreciation of the paintings versus the photographs, they noted significantly more activity at the back of the subjects’ brains, specifically the bilateral cuneus, a part of the occipital lobe responsible for basic visual processing; and the left lingual gyrus, or ridge, associated with vision, encoding visual memory, logical ordering and dreaming. The findings suggested that these neural structures are associated with the aesthetic appreciation for paintings.
Honey and Ginger Beat Antibiotics in Fighting Superbugs
R
esearchers from Ethiopia’s University of Gondar College of Medicine have recently found that the use of mixtures of honey and ginger extract can treat drug-resistant bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae. They note that further clinical evaluation and pharmacological standardization of the mixtures are needed before they can be used therapeutically. The scientists conducted laboratory testing with clinical isolations of five separate superbugs: methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), Staphylococcus aureus (non-MRSA), two strains of Escherichia coli plus Klebsiella pneumoniae. The inhibition of all five types of bacteria by onventionally grown foods contain three common antibiotics—methicilpesticide residues that are three to lin, amoxicillin and penicillin—were four times higher than those found in orcompared with the antibacterial effects ganic foods (traces may be due to atmoof ginger extract, honey and a combispheric drift from other fields or soils), nation of the two. according to a review of 343 research The ginger extract and honey studies published last June in the British combination was found to have the Journal of Nutrition. The review, which greatest inhibiting effect on the bacincluded studies of food grown in different regions and seasons, also determined that teria; however, even the two applied organic foods contained higher levels of healthy nutrients such as minerals, vitamins separately were more effective against and antioxidants (specifically polyphenols), compared to conventional foods, which the bacteria than the antibiotics. also contained significantly higher levels of cadmium, a heavy metal toxin. Lead Lurks in Lipsticks and Skin Whiteners
R
ecent research has found several heavy metals in numerous lipsticks and cosmetics. These include mercury and lead in skin-whitening creams, and chromium, cadmium and lead in lipsticks. Scientists from the Loma Linda University School of Medicine and the University of Arizona’s College of Medicine tested 549 cosmetic skin-lightening products manufactured in 32 different countries. The products were purchased online and from stores in the U.S., China, Taiwan, Japan and Sri Lanka. Thirty-three of the products contained more than 1,000 parts per million (ppm) of lead, and 45 percent of them contained more than 10,000 ppm of lead. Of those purchased in the U.S., 3.3 percent had mercury levels greater than 1,000 ppm. University of California scientists tested 24 lipsticks used frequently by teenagers and purchased at local stores. They found 75 percent contained lead and nearly half exceeded the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) maximum acceptable concentration of lead for candy (0.1 ppm). In 2010, the FDA tested 400 lipsticks and found lead in every sample tested—with concentrations ranging from 0.9 to 3.06 ppm. Other studies have confirmed similar findings. They also found significant concentrations of chromium and cadmium among some of the samples. There are currently no concrete international or U.S. standards for safe levels of these heavy metals in cosmetics.

n addition to improving fitness, University of Minnesota researchers found that treadmill walking at the desk also boosts productivity and morale. The study tested 40 adults who used treadmills for a year. Selfassessments, combined with supervisor assessments, found that treadmill walking while working increased performance levels. Work performance improved by an average of 11 percent based on supervisor assessments, and 7 percent based on the employee selfassessments. A study from Rutgers University tested 66 adults while they walked on treadmills set for low intensity versus when they were seated at desks, with two days separating the tests. Measurements of reading comprehension, attention span, response speed skills, and performance show these were unimpeded by treadmill walking when compared with sitting.

Do You Know MELISA?
A Diagnostic Test for Metal Allergies by Perry Ekstrand, DDS, LVIF, The Swedish Dentist
I
have been approached lately by a few patients asking me about titanium allergies. For those of you who don’t know, titanium is used in implant treatment to restore missing teeth. In medicine it is used for hips, knees and shoulders among other things. In some literature, the incidence of allergies is claimed to be less than 1%. Now, that does not really help you if you are the one. In other articles they suggest 2-4% and I have heard larger numbers as well. There is a discussion in the medical community if allergy tests should be routinely done before titanium implant placement. MELISA is a blood test that can be taken to check for different metal

allergies including titanium and mercury. The excerpt below is from the web site www.melisatest.com/page/ titanium-allergy. I think this resource will shed some light on the subject and answer some of your questions. “In the last couple of years, the question if titanium allergy really exists has been raised in scientific literature. “From a clinical point of view, the frequency of titanium allergy seems to be very rare. However, many patients report worsening of health after placement of titanium implants. The reactions are not necessarily local, but appear in other parts of the body. One of the reasons why the existence of titanium allergy has been debated might be that the golden standard for metal allergy testing, patch testing, has not been properly developed for titanium. The patch test is a skin test, where salts of the metals tested are placed on the skin of the back under occlusion. 24-72 hours later a dermatologist evaluates the reaction and the presence of a rash is taken as evidence of a positive reaction. Unfortunately, titanium dioxide, a salt of titanium used for patch testing, does not penetrate the skin under the conditions of patch test. This is one of the reasons why patch test in its current form often gives false negative results in patients with titaniuminduced inflammation in the body.” “The latest available research from Europe and Japan shows that between 2-4% of all patients with titanium implants develop an allergic reaction to either titanium or to one or more of the metals used in the titanium alloy. “The symptoms most often observed after implantation with titanium-containing implants are varied, so they will be different in different patients. These symptoms are
akin to those described after exposure to other allergens, such as nickel or mercury, in sensitized individuals. The result is multiple non-specific symptoms such as profound fatigue, pain, cognitive dysfunction, headache, sleep problems, etc.” If you have titanium implants and you are experiencing any of these symptoms, don’t panic, as there can be other causes. If you have evaluated almost everything else, or perhaps you are considering the journey into having implant treatment, maybe it would be wise to ask your physician or dentist to order the MELISA study and evaluate your sensitivity. There are alternatives to titanium for dental implants which are more expensive, but are metal-free, and could be a better match if you discover an allergy. You know, if I could finish on a personal note—it isn’t just titanium. We are literally bombarded by thousands of chemicals and metals in our homes, offices, and outdoor environments that are being used to supposedly “enhance“ our lives. A “safe level” of any substance is not safe if you are allergic to it. For example, if you are allergic to peanuts, it might just take a fraction of one nut to set it off. If you are prone to asthma or allergies, maybe the chemicals you are using to disinfect your surroundings are setting off an allergic reaction causing your symptoms. I for one took the bleach and other chemicals out of our home, and we now use nontoxic products made in America. I have personally become much more cautious when it comes to choosing cleaners, personal care products, dental care products, and food. Do your homework on anything you introduce into your body. Visit our private office setting for a cappuccino or espresso and meet the team that can help you find joy, function, and a more youthful you through mercury-free, biologic dentistry. Practice Gratitude and Change Your Life by April Thompson
“I have started a gratitude journal that I write in every day. When you run out of the ‘obvious’ blessings, it makes you dig deep and see all the small things. I commit to do my very best to never take anything or anybody, good or bad, for granted.” ~ Lisa Henderson Middlesworth
“A town can be such a blessing. Neighbors always pull together when there’s a tragedy or natural disaster. The boundaries diminish and yards become one... we eat in each other’s kitchens, supervise each other’s children, share vehicles and generally watch out for each other. I believe it is God’s way of reminding us that we’re one family and each of us provides the strength and foundation for the other.” ~ Colleen Epple Pine
“My losses have given me an inner compass by which I live my life. While I would not wish the tragedies I have experienced on anyone, I am eternally grateful for the blessings. I do not waste time, and I know how to love without fear.” ~ Joanie Weber Badyna
M
iddlesworth, Pine and Badyna are among thousands adopting a Gratitude Challenge to help develop their gratitude reflex and cultivate a more positive outlook on life. Gratitude can take many forms, but typically participants pledge to reflect upon and express it daily with the help of email prompts from a sponsoring organization. A gratitude practice can help grow appreciation for the strangers that better our lives. It can also deepen our

gratefulness for the significant others we sometimes take for granted. Approaching a milestone birthday, retired businessman Walter Green set out on a year-long journey to visit 44 people that he credited with changing his life to initiate conversations about their influence, which he recounts in the book This is the Moment! While the relationships were already solid, according to Green, “In many cases, it was the most significant conversation we ever had.”
“Feeling gratitude and not expressing it is like wrapping a present and not giving it.” ~ William Arthur Ward Gratitude is a small act with a big payoff, Green observes. “The person receiving gratitude appreciates knowing they made a difference, but the giver is the greatest recipient. It feels good to express gratitude, plus you are freed from future regrets that you didn’t express it when you had the chance.” Patricia Brugioni, a Christian Science nurse from Chicago, has been sharing three things she’s grateful for on social media on a daily basis since taking a five-day online challenge earlier this year. “I am a grateful person by nature, but now I am claiming the good that is coming to me and learning to cherish things without feeling like I have to earn them,” she says. Connect with freelance writer April Thompson at AprilWrites.com.
Grateful Kickstarts Kindspring.org’s first online Gratitude Challenge brought together 11,000 people from 118 countries. The site now has an online portal, including a startup kit designed to help community organizations sponsor their own challenges. Gratitude can be good for business, too. Four Canadian branches of the bank TD turned its ATMs into “automatic thank-you” machines that provided high-value personalized gifts to its longest-standing customers to thank them for their loyalty. Any business can be creative in showing appreciation in meaningful ways to its customers. As with any new skill or habit, gratitude needs to be exercised until it becomes second nature. Simply writing a page a day in a gratitude journal or saying a morning thank-you prayer can help maintain the momentum.

geously reach for our highest visions,” says Straub. “Start with what’s working already and embrace the vision of what life can be.” She likens self-empowerment to “spiritual surfing, riding the wave where the energy, momentum and passion are.” As workshop leaders, they encourage participants to transform limiting beliefs, determine what is meaningful for them, construct a compelling vision from that insight, and then find ways to manifest that vision. They address six key areas in which to become more powerful and realize our personal best: physical health, emotional health, relationships, work, finances, and spirituality.

Powerful You! Six Ways to Create the Life You Want by Judith Fertig
P
ulitzer Prize winner Anna Quindlen had reached the top of The New York Times bestseller list more than once. Yet, she relates in her memoir, Lots of Candles, Plenty of Cake, that she also yearned to be able to do a headstand, but felt she didn’t possess the necessary sense of balance. “That’s just a little story you tell yourself,” advised her personal trainer. Our bodies, Quindlen observes, are major appliances that deliver decades of faithful service with precious little downtime. She admits, “If the human body had a warranty, mine would have run out ages ago.” Still, she clung to a vision: “I want to be strong; strong enough to hike the mountain without getting breathless, strong enough to take a case of wine from the deliveryman and carry it to the kitchen.” Quindlen, who lives in New York City and New England, was also maintaining an incorrect belief. It wasn’t
14
her faulty balance that was holding her back, it was fear. After two years of trying, she was able to do a headstand. Along with a sense of accomplishment, this quirky achievement was a revelation as she ultimately concluded, “If I can do one thing like that, perhaps there are others.”
Take a Stand
Personal empowerment is all about taking a stand—developing the vision, countering misguided beliefs, having a plan, and then moving forward to be the best version of one’s true self. David Gershon and Gail Straub, of West Hurley, New York, authors of Empowerment: The Art of Creating Your Life As You Want It, contend that empowerment always starts with a desire for a better life. “We need to learn how to dream, how to boldly and coura-
Physical Health
First, recognize what we’re already doing right—eating well, perhaps, or exercising—and then add another healthy activity. Cardiologist Suzanne Steinbaum, director of New York City’s Lenox Hill Hospital’s Women and Heart Disease, underscores that much of physical health is within our personal control. “Many lifestyle factors keep us from being physically healthy enough to lead a full life,” she says, including high blood pressure, high cholesterol, smoking, lack of exercise, poor diet, excessive alcohol consumption or drug use, stress, and depression. “The good news is that lifestyle factors are within our power to change.” Steinbaum recommends starting small by changing one bad habit and then seeing how we feel. “Quit the diet soda or the sugar-sweetened beverages. Get rid of potato chips. Go for a walk. Put down your smartphone and spend some focused time with your child, a friend, or even your pet. Then breathe … and just listen to how you feel.”
Emotional Health
Our emotions can be allies in achieving personal empowerment, advises Straub. For example, fear can alert us to danger; joy can remind us to be grateful. However, when emotions cause pain and threaten derailment, it’s important to understand why, and then work through it. “Uncomfortable emotions let

us know there is a problem to attend to, a wound to work on, thus allowing us to see our own truth,” explains Don Miguel Ruiz, Jr., of San Diego, California, author of The Five Levels of Attachment. “With awareness, we can observe our uncomfortable emotions, as they may be showing a belief we are holding that is no longer true for us.” “To work through our emotions, we have to be able to accurately sense what we are feeling and be able to express it in a healthy way,” adds Straub, like expressing anger after a tough commute by punching a designated pillow or shouting into a closet. Furthermore, “We need to change the belief we’ve identified that’s causing the painful emotional response.” Did the guy that cut us off in traffic really do it maliciously? Third, learn to let go of a negative emotion that’s automatically triggered when someone or something presses our “hot button” by immediately considering, “He must have been in a big hurry,” or “She doesn’t realize how offensive that remark could be,” realizing it’s their problem, not ours, and declining to make it ours. Achieving greater emotional calm is a huge step toward personal empowerment.
Relationships
Acting on heartfelt emotions can help forge stronger and healthier relationships. “Sometimes, we say yes to a false image of ourselves or hide who we are in order to be accepted,” counsels Ruiz, noting that not presenting our authentic selves in relationships will weaken or replace true intimacy with a sense of loneliness and distance. “Say, ‘I forgive, I accept and I let go.’” This paves the way to being genuine, which naturally leads to greater unconditional love and more fulfilling and honest relationships. In romantic relationships, life coach Martha Beck, Ph.D., author of Finding Your Way in a Wild New World: Reclaiming Your True Nature to Create the Life You Want, suggests ditching the image of two people

looking soulfully into each other’s eyes. “Realize that you’re both changing all the time,” she says. Instead, envision two people walking side-byside at the same pace, and a relationship that will continue to refresh and move forward, instead of getting stuck in well-worn patterns.

Capability is one of the new guiding principles for self-empowerment at work, says Haydn Shaughnessy, a fellow at the University of California-Irvine’s Center for Digital Transformation and co-author, with Nicholas Vitalari, of The Elastic Enterprise. “It’s more about a broad-stroke capability,” he claims, such as public speaking, writing, or troubleshooting and fixing machinery. Capability means a strong skill that can be fine-tuned for a specific circumstance; a talented generalist, rather than a narrow specialist. Shaughnessy recommends that we recognize and develop our best competencies in order to equip ourselves to both withstand economic adversity and help push our careers forward.
Finances
Fiscal self-empowerment involves cultivating the confidence that we will be able to obtain more money when needed. Beck maintains that anyone can create abundance that lasts. “Where people believe they get abundance, they will,” she says, as in friendships or creative problem solving. It’s the mixed internal messages of, “I need more money,” with, “There’s not enough to go around,” that can block the flow of abundance in our lives. Beck, who lives in San Luis Obispo, California, recommends throwing a “neurological toggle switch” to turn off the “lack-and-attack” part of our brains and turn on the “everything-is-goingto-be-all-right” area. This is realized through slowing down, relaxing and meditating. “You have to relax to start dissolving the disbelief in the possibility of having what you want,” she says. “Empty out the negative thoughts in order to gain the confidence that abundance is yours.”
Spirituality
Following all of these first five steps also helps enhance our spirituality. Dennis Merritt Jones, of Simi Valley, California, author of the new book, Your (Re) Defining Moments: Becoming Who You Were Born to Be, calls it “being pulled by vision,” rather than being pushed by pain. The motivational speaker believes that every encounter, event, or circumstance is a portal to a redefining moment—a chance to connect with our authentic self. Jones cites seven characteristics of the authentic or timeless self: realizing our oneness in life, reverence for that life, fearlessness because we know we’re part of something bigger, integrity, humility, equanimity, and unconditional love. “When these qualities become the norm in our daily lives, we’ll know we are living from the authentic self,” he says. Jones urges us to live “more vertically.” He explains, “We exist on what I call the surface of life, a horizontal pathway where we go about our daily routines. We often don’t hear the siren call from the depths of our being because we are so busy ‘doing.’ It’s the authentic self that’s eternally calling us to be who we were born to be.” He describes a “sacred intersection” where we can turn from the horizontal everyday and move in a vertical direction to the depths of our souls or the heights of our imaginations via mindfulness and self-enquiry. Fortunately, every moment of every day offers this opportunity to expand our being. The key question is, “Will we be consciously present enough to recognize the opening and step through the door?” These experts concur there is no finish line for self-empowerment or attaining the perfect place to stay. It’s a “sustainable growth process,” says Gershon, an ideal project for the rest of our lives. Judith Fertig blogs at AlfrescoFoodAnd Lifestyle.blogspot.com from Overland Park, KS.

The Spine and Direct Effects on the Organs and Skeleton by Dr. Michael J. Badanek, DC, BS, CNS, DACBN, DCBCN, MSGR/CHEV
M
ost physicians find it impossible to diagnose a patient with health challenges due to referred pain and other symptoms from spinal problems or other sources such as scars, dental dysfunction (biomechanically or disease), toxicity, and nutritional deficiencies. There are three major issues that I will address here: Viscerosomatic Referral, Somatovisceral Referral, and Psychosomatic Referral syndromes. Typically, most patients who go to a physician’s office are treated symptoms rather than causes, and many times are misdiagnosed due to more complicated issues which are chronically underlying. It takes a very special health care provider to differentiate and provide an accurate working diagnosis to relieve or eradicate the patient’s complaints. So just what is a Viscerosomatic Reflexive complaint? Basically, it is an organ or organ system that is sending messages to the spine, resulting in spinal pain and dysfunction. A wellknown example is pain in the left chest, neck, and arm—referred pain triggered by the inflamed nerves of the heart from an impending myocardial infarction (heart attack). If there is liver and gallbladder dysfunction, the referral generates right neck and right shoulder pain. If there is chronic pain in the middle to lower middle back (thoracic spine), you must consider an upper gastrointestinal issue with
16
the stomach, pancreas, and small intestine. We could elaborate on this topic with many more examples, but suffice it to say that Viscerosomatic complaints are real and many times overlooked by physicians. Somatovisceral Reflexive complaints arise from serious acute or chronic joint injuries that do not heal, repetitive strain injuries, bony malformations (scoliosis, dislocation of the hips, slub foot, etc.) are all examples of chronic primary structural dysfunction. They work in reverse of the Viscerosomatic manner: these can adversely affect visceral organs. These spinal-organ Somatovisceral relationships, primarily triggered by chronic spinal joint fixations in the spine, are mediated through autonomic nerve pathways. Two very good examples are as follows: If there is chronic spinal dysfunction in the upper middle back (thoracic spine) at the levels of T2, T3, and T4 there is a reflexive reaction which directly effects the heart and thus symptoms and conditions will manifest. In the lower middle back (thoracic spine), T10 thru L1, the stomach, liver, spleen, gall bladder and pancreas will have direct interference. If the lower back (lumbar spine), L2 through L5, is under long-term chronic insult, patients will suffer with large and small intestinal issues like IBS, Colitis, constipation/ diarrhea, and other pathologies due to long-term nerve compromise. Finally there is Psychosomatic Referral (secondary dysfunction from psychological stress). Many abnormal body postures are directly correlated to various suppressed negative thoughts and feelings. For example, individuals with psychosomatically
caused low back pain are often suppressing feelings of inferiority and unworthiness by adapting a lockedknees and slumped shoulders habital stance. Over time, this abnormal and stressful body position exerts undue pressure on the sacroiliac joints and excessive wear and tear on the lumbosacral muscles and ligaments, resulting in low back pain and tension. Additionally, the expression of chronic fear is often seen in a “coathanger” posture: shoulders raised and somewhat squared off, head and neck inclined forward, chest raised, and the arms hanging loosely from their joints. This type of classic musculoskeletal holding pattern often contributes to chronic neck and shoulder and tension, as well as headaches. We have briefly discussed and elaborated on a few of the examples of how the organs can affect the spine, how the spine can affect organs and organ systems, and finally how emotions can affect one’s structure and then secondarily the organs and organ systems. I believe misdiagnosis of chronic health challenges encompasses the majority of the general public. If you are not diagnosed properly, how can you be successful in treatment protocols? Generate excitement around spiritual aspects of the season or visits from out-of-town family members. When shopping together for gifts, make a plan and stick with it, letting everyone know its purpose beforehand. Resist impulsive purchases trumpeted by store promotions.
Connect with Kids
BRING BACK THE MAGIC
Give Kids the True Gifts of the Season by Meredith Montgomery
A
ccording to a poll by the Center for a New American Dream in 2005, three out of four Americans wish the holidays were less materialistic. Traditionally rooted in family, faith and joy, the season can be marred by commercialization. Instead, inspire the whole family to take a “buy less, get more” approach so that everyone can experience the essence of what many consider the most wonderful time of the year.
Raise Awareness
The Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood (CCFC) reports that U.S. companies now spend about $17 billion annually marketing to children, up from $100 million in 1983. Many kids are formulating wish lists yearround, due to the continual bombardment of alluring commercials. CCFC Associate Director Josh Golin attests that the holiday season is a perfect time to start discussing the power of advertising and the techniques used. Teens are especially sensitive to the notion of being manipulated by adults. For children younger than 8 who don’t yet comprehend the persuasive intent of commercials, limit screen time with all devices. Golin advises that the scope of commercialism has changed radically. “It’s no longer just television commercials, but also Internet, cell phones and video games. Plus, children’s media characters are placed on every type of product imaginable. Think about limiting commercialism in all forms; you can’t just turn off the TV.”
Manage Expectations
Start before the holidays. “Talk to kids about how you’ll celebrate the holidays in your own home, noting that it might be unique. Focus on aspects that aren’t gift-related,” suggests Golin. Plan food-focused traditions such as baking together and special group meals. Bring back board games.
www.GoNaturalAwakenings.com
New American Dream’s Simplify the Holidays guide at Tinyurl.com/SimplifyTheHolidays encourages families to reconnect by participating in meaningful activities such as neighborhood caroling, building a gingerbread house, preparing gift boxes for the homeless, taking a nature hike, or making a feeder for backyard birds. Explore volunteer projects as a family, letting the children’s interests lead. If kids are attracted to water, pick up litter along a shoreline. In the spirit of the season, donate gently used clothing, books and toys to a shelter. For animal lovers, contribute time or materials to a local animal rescue or rehabilitation center. Attend community events such as musical performances, plays and art exhibits. Seek out inexpensive or free local activities. Kids are often enthralled by a simple tour of neighborhood Christmas lights.
Gift Buying
Make gift purchases consistent with the family’s values. Golin suggests resisting the temptation to buy the season’s “hot” products. “Resist buying what’s advertised the most. We have power as parents and as part of a larger culture to believe there’s no such thing as a must-have toy or holiday gift.” Instead, search for timeless, high-quality items, such as wooden toys for toddlers. Ads can make a toy look appealing because it’s brandnew and ready-to-use, but homemade gifts can be a more meaningful alternative. New American Dream suggests constructing a rope swing or wooden sandbox for little ones. Given a comfortable timeframe, children can give grownups homemade green cleaning products or repotted herb and houseplant clippings. All ages can give away the last book they read and kick off a year-round book exchange. Forego more tangible items by giving experiences, such as a zoo membership, bowling gift cards or movie tickets, or make a charitable donation to a cause that the recipient supports. Let friends and family make shopping easier by inviting them to create a gift registry at SoKindRegistry.com.
Unplug
Always plan for quiet time. It reduces exposure to holiday marketing, creates opportunities for family bonding, and fosters independent children. Golin observes, “We can all be better about trusting our kids to entertain themselves. When reducing screen time, we don’t necessarily need to suggest activities to kids. Give them the space to be bored for a minute and be amazed at what they come up with on their own.” Meredith Montgomery publishes Natural Awakenings of Mobile/Baldwin, AL (HealthyLivingHealthyPlanet.com).

Food Cravings Got You Down? by Nuris Lemire, MS, OTR/L, NC
I
couldn’t have said it better myself—so I won’t even try. The following is excerpted from an article by David Blyweiss, M.D., courtesy of www. AdvancedNaturalMedicine.com, the natural health newsletter that lets you in on the newest discoveries and latest breakthroughs in natural medicine.
What do you crave? Is it chips and dips, meats and sweets, pies and fries, cakes and shakes? These foods are all a big part of the Western diet. It’s almost impossible to avoid them. But even though you crave them, are these American delights what your body really wants? The answer is a resounding NO! It doesn’t matter how many cravings you have for some of these favored foods. Your body has absolutely no use for most of them. They’re empty calories. They’re fattening and inflammatory. They interfere with your body’s natural healing ability and place you squarely at risk of chronic disease. This is an urgent message to everyone. Today the CDC reports that half of American adults suffer from at least one life-threatening ailment. They also say a quarter of our adult population is dealing with two or more killer diseases. A big part of the problem? The
18
foods we eat. It’s about time we put the odds in our favor and feed our bodies exactly what they need. What does your body really want—and need—to survive? The good, old-fashioned foods our ancestors thrived on. Until about 150 years ago, we ate roots and fruits, greens and beans, seeds and weeds, fish and a little bit of natural wild game. If you want to fight off chronic disease, you may want to revisit some of these foods. You can’t buy any of them at Burger King, McDonald’s or KFC. They don’t come in boxes or cellophane packages from the grocery store, either. When you fuel your body with the right foods, it has an innate ability to heal itself. Feed it the wrong foods, and your body becomes chronically inflamed. Then it literally starts DESTROYING itself. It’s recommended to get 80% of your food from natural plant sources. That’s what your body really wants, even if you aren’t aware of it. Fruits and vegetables of every color support a healthy body and reduce inflammation. You can eat them raw or cooked. Real food. That is a key to prevention and reversal of most of the chronic conditions we are faced with today as a society. Along the same vein, another key is building up the immune system. Doctors do not heal. Your immune system does the healing.
Remember that 70% of your immune system is in your gut. When you consume processed foods, which are laced with sugar, you end up with a nation addicted to sugar. Sugar weakens the immune system. Cancer only survives in a weakened, acidic body, and cancer feeds on sugar. Why are PET scans successful in identifying cancer? The person drinks a radiated sugar solution, which is absorbed by the cancer and lights up for the scan. What is Ensure? Gasoline to fuel the cancer fire! Why? It’s made up of sugar! In the 1920s, the national average of sugar consumption per year was around 15-20 pounds per person. Today the average person consumes his/her weight in sugar, averaging an astonishing 150-180 pounds per year, much of that consumed in the form of endocrinedisrupting, toxic corn syrup. Dr. David Reuben, author of Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Nutrition, says: “Sugar is not a food. It is a pure chemical extracted from plant sources, purer in fact than cocaine, which it resembles in many ways. Its true name is sucrose and its chemical formula is C12H22O11. It has 12 carbon atoms, 22 hydrogen atoms, 11 oxygen atoms, and absolutely nothing else to offer. The chemical formula for cocaine is C17H21NO4. Sugar’s formula again is C12H22O11. For all practical purposes, the difference is that sugar is missing the ‘N,’ or nitrogen atom.” (WellnessMama. com, Harmful Effects of Sugar, http:// wellnessmama.com/15/harmfuleffects-of-sugars/) Call Lemire Clinic for a nutrition consultation at 352-291-9459, visit www.LemireClinic.com, or attend one of our free seminars the first Monday of every month at 6pm for patient education.

nsightly cellulite, which is comprised of fat deposits just beneath the skin, appears as lumps or dimples, usually near the buttocks and upper thighs, and is most common in women. Building muscle can make cellulite harder to notice and help burn more calories. While cellulite deposits might not be eliminated, burning body fat will make them shrink and be less visible. Here are five top exercises to blast stubborn cellulite.
Cardiovascular Exercise
As long as we’re expending more calories than we’re taking in, we will begin burning the body’s fat deposits. As cardio workouts burn calories, they can reduce overall body fat, which also makes cellulite harder to see. Any exercise such as walking, running, hiking or cycling can help in the overall battle to burn calories and blast cellulite.
Stair Climbing
Stair climbing burns at least 10 calories a minute, according to the nonprofit National Wellness Institute. Stair climbing has the added benefit of working all the muscle areas that tend accumulate the most cellulite.
Leg Lifts
Janet Wallace, Ph.D., professor of kinesiology at Indiana University-Bloomington, advises that leg lifts are the best exercise for toning the outer thighs.

Lie on the floor on your side; place your elbow on the ground and prop your head up. Put the other hand on the floor beside your waist. With legs straight and toes pointed, lift the top leg up as far as it will go, then slowly lower it back down. Do 10 to 15 reps, then turn over and work the other leg.
Back Kicks
An MSNBC health segment recommended this fat-busting move to target all the areas that are most susceptible to cellulite. While kneeling on hands and knees, lift a leg up behind you until it’s pointed upward at a 45-degree angle. Slowly bring the leg back down and repeat the movement with the other leg. Start with 15 reps and work up.
Squats
Stand comfortably with feet about a foot apart. Slowly bend the knees to lower your body until both thighs are parallel to the floor. Then gradually stand back up, squeezing gluteal and back-of-the-thigh muscles as you rise. If performed consistently, this exercise will increase muscle strength in the thighs and buttocks, which also helps burn fat, according to the Mayo Clinic. Less fat equals less noticeable cellulite. As with the other exercises, start with 15 repetitions per session and work up. E.C. LaMeaux posts a body of work at Gaiam Life (Life.Gaiam.com), from which this was adapted.

New Patient Choices Concierge Medicine by Nelson Kraucak, M.D.

oncierge Medicine is on the forefront of patient choices today. It is defined as personalized care. The patient pays an annual retainer fee to help with the additional time it takes to provide this service. According to the Association of American Medical Colleges Center for Workforce Studies, there will be a shortage of 45,000 primary care physicians as the Affordable Care Act insurance coverage provisions are implemented and 30,000,000 additional Americans become eligible for health insurance coverage. Medical practitioners have two choices: Provide care for an in-

creasing number of patients (which translates to no more than a 10-15 minute office visit per patient) and dealing with increasing reductions in reimbursement from insurance companies, or reduce the patient load by adding concierge medicine, charging a retainer fee to the patient and thus allowing for extra time and attention with each patient. Common complaints that physicians hear about include: The doctor came in and out, not staying more than a few minutes; s/he quickly reviewed my diagnosis but I did not get a chance to ask about my other problems; s/he ordered all these tests without explaining why I needed them; the doctor gave me refills for my medications without staying long enough for me to ask other questions; it seems that all doctors are money hungry and they make you come in for seemingly unnecessary appointments; and, physicians are constantly referring me to other doctors, or to a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant. These are some of the many patient complaints that are all legitimate, but arise because most patients do not understand all the complexities of medical care in a litigious society with insurance changing as frequently as it is. The need to document is of paramount importance; to balance the health of the patient with the increasing costs of managing a medical office has made the practice of medicine difficult and stressful, resulting in dissatisfaction from both doctor and patient. The patient complaints above and the associated
patient/physician stress accumulated can both be alleviated—and a win-win situation achieved—with a concierge-type practice that fosters a meaningful and satisfying relationship between physician and patient. Some of the advantages available in concierge plans include: You can text, e-mail or phone your doctor from anywhere on the planet. You can make same-day or next day medical appointments without wait times. You can create a personalized wellness plan with your concierge physician that includes comprehensive evaluations and medical counseling. You can set up anti-aging options and monitor your personalized markers. Your appointments with your physician can last 30-60 minutes. You can get prescriptions by phone. You can have extensive annual wellness physicals, including lab tests and other high-tech medical screenings. You can receive house calls on weekends and holidays; this is especially useful for patients who are homebound. You can avoid long waits in the ER. Get direct hospital admissions and have your physician take care of your needs. You can enjoy discounts on alternative treatments and supplements. While it does come at a price, concierge medicine is an investment in attention and services rarely offered in a general doctor’s practice. It provides a higher quality of personalized and convenient care, and the peace of mind that comes from having 24/7 access to a doctor who knows you and your health very well. Imagine your doctor opening the office on a weekend to attend to a cut and suture so you do not have to wait in the Emergency Room. Growing Up with Wayne Dyer
Serena Dyer Reflects on Her Spiritual Upbringing by Lindsay McGinty
What was it like to grow up with Wayne Dyer as your father? Growing up, my seven siblings and I were exposed to a lot of ideas that were different than what my friends heard. We were taught that within each of us is a purpose, a
www.GoNaturalAwakenings.com
passion that we call dharma, and that dharma is what we are incarnated here to do. We were taught that the most important thing you could do in your life was to follow that dharma, and in doing so, you would be serving God. I often joke that my childhood was filled with unconditional love and security, but also a lot of weirdness! Not many kids learn transcendental meditation at the age of 5 and count monks as friends. photo: Pacific-Plus.com
S
erena Dyer had a unique childhood being raised by spiritually progressive parents, including her bestselling celebrity dad, Wayne Dyer, Ph.D., who would write her notes on personal stationery printed with the motto, “Be realistic. Expect miracles!” It isn’t a message her peers likely heard at home. Now 29, Serena shares her point of view in Don’t Die with Your Music Still in You: My Experience Growing Up with Spiritual Parents, co-authored with her father. The title reflects her parents’ key lesson for their children: Pursue the life you are born to live. Some missteps along the journey to her true calling included enrolling in law school to maintain her student identity, but her upbringing served as a light guiding her home to herself. She wrote the book after dropping out of law school, a big step toward her dream of inspiring others to live authentically.
Were there any downsides to being raised by spiritual parents? I like to think that while there weren’t any real downsides, there were certainly challenges. For example, in a more traditional household, when someone gets the flu, their parents probably tell them that it’s flu season and it’s just going around. In my household, when one of us would get the flu, we were told that we aligned with it and allowed it in. In other words, part of the challenge of having spiritually progressive parents is that they make sure you are aware that you are responsible for everything happening in your life.
What is the greatest lesson
Thus far, it is knowing that we are the creators of our destiny—the masters of our fate. I wholeheartedly believe that we sign up for the experiences we have in this lifetime, as they are part of our soul’s desire to grow and expand. When we make the choice to view life as not happening to us, but responding to us, we become more consciously aware of how much our thoughts affect our daily experience. I am so grateful my parents taught me this at a young age because I have learned to choose my thoughts carefully.
What is the greatest gift your parents have given you? It isn’t something they did for me; it was how they lived their lives in front of me. My parents did not encourage me to follow my dreams and then sacrifice theirs in order to raise me. My parents followed their dreams and in watching them do so, I felt safe to go after mine, as well. They taught me that there is no honor in sacrificing yourself or your dreams for anyone else, and demonstrated that the only time you have to make your life the way you want it is now. I am grateful to them for living their lives this way, which has allowed me to feel safe living my life this way, as well.
What advice would you give to people who wish they were raised in a more spiritual manner? I tell people that it doesn’t really matter what kind of parents you had, it matters how you feel about yourself. Everything in life starts with the self. If you don’t have love and acceptance and forgiveness for yourself, you won’t have these things to give to other people either. I was taught that we can’t give what we don’t have. When we learn to love and treasure every part of ourselves, we also have love to give to others. Contributor Lindsay McGinty lives in Orange County, CA.

From the Desk of ...

very so often, I sit at my desk at home, look around, and wonder, What would a stranger think of the person who writes in this madlooking habitat? The desk has a glass top, under which is a crazy quilt of memorabilia: scraps of paper with Oscar Wilde and T. S. Eliot quotes, a prayer by Mary Queen of Scots, the fortune from a long-ago cookie telling me to express myself, a card explaining, in French, the Chinese symbolism of goldfish. There’s a ticket from the Strawberry Festival and a Gaither Vocal Band concert, and a mosaic of movie ticket stubs. There’s a two-dollar bill, a greeting card about an adventurous runaway chicken, another with butterflies and a wise verse about transformation, and a mutant leaf my friend Courtney once mailed me, because she thought it was weird and cool and knew I would appreciate it. There are two party napkins: one red and gold, with Chinese calligraphy and cherry blossoms, from the surprise 30th birthday party my best friends threw me, and one with colorful balloons from my birthday last year, when my friend and neighbor Laura sneaked over and left me a perfect breakfast at my back door: two warm chocolate croissants and a Mason jar of berries and cream. There’s also my great-grandfather’s business card, which I found in my great-grandmother’s Bible. It reads,
22
simply: “E. W. (Sam) Murphy. Dealer in Real Estate. Cows, Hogs, Horses, and Mules. Route 1, LaGrange, Georgia.” No more was needed. Everyone in town knew “Uncle Sam.” (Also, no one knows why he was called Sam. And yet my father was named after him. Marvelous.) He preferred to conduct business from his front porch. My dream is to one day do the very same thing. The desktop is a museum of whimsy. There’s an old glass milk bottle full of colorful marbles, my dad’s as a kid. If he were here now, I know he would slap his forehead comically and say, “I’ve lost my marbles!” And I also know I would roll my eyes. There’s also his old Marine Band harmonica, his father’s and grandfather’s before him. I don’t play the harmonica, but I love the sound of it. Sometimes I sit here idly blowing on it, seeing what chords I can get to emerge. It’s very much like writing. Maybe that’s why I keep it on my desk. There’s also a toy truck, an old aqua-and-chrome Chevrolet pickup. I couldn’t tell you what year and model it is, but my Uncle Hant could, if he were living. He’d know at a glance. It looks exactly like the real truck he once tried to give me. Of all the regrets in my life ... One day, I will have an old truck like that. I will name it Hant. There are five lucky Chinese cats in the truck. The paper explaining their symbolism is under the glass. One cat is in the front seat, and the others are in the back of the truck. They look like they’re in a parade, waving at an invisible crowd. I feel sure Uncle Hant would disapprove of cats in such a
fine truck—he was a man for a hound dog—but I don’t have a passel of lucky hounds, and really, that truck is just the right size for those cats. Having confessed that I’m a grown woman with a harmonica and a toy truck full of lucky cats on my desk, let me add that I also keep a breadbasket liner here. It is meant to go in a square basket, which I do not own. But I liked the pink roses and gingham, so I bought it and meant to get a basket later. It is now filled with papers and pens. Not once has a biscuit been inside it. There’s also a bowl of pennies to roll, a small stuffed bear, and a framed drawing of an otter my crazy-talentedartist friend Joan gave me last year for my birthday. She drew it in pen and highlighter on a Post-It, and it’s the most remarkably realistic thing you ever saw. Above the desk is a poster of Katharine Hepburn, a picture of what I see as the road less traveled by through an autumnal yellow wood, two 1930s prints of an owl and a snowy cabin ... and shooting targets from when my best friend Janna taught me how to shoot. I’d so enjoyed wielding my shotgun as Miss Mona in The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas that I wanted to learn how to handle the real thing. By the way, an almost-bullseye is an excellent thing to put at your eye level where you write. In a Braille of bullet-holes, it seems to say “Center yourself, get a grip, and aim for the heart of things.” I’m still trying to find it, but every so often, sitting here among memories of good times and the small souvenirs of many kindnesses, I’d like to think I come pretty close to the mark. Melody Murphy would like to thank Katharine Hepburn, Robert Frost, Oscar Wilde, T. S. Eliot, King James, Mary Queen of Scots, Thomas Jefferson, Chevrolet, the Marines, the Gaithers, the ghosts of all her ancestors, the owl, the otter, the runaway chicken, the multicultural goldfish, and her lucky cats for all their support in the writing of this column.

New Cancer Test for Dogs Detects Illness in Time for Effective Treatment by Shawn Messonnier, DVM
P
et owners often ask if there’s an accurate, inexpensive way to test dogs for cancer before they develop clinical signs of it. A diagnosis early in the course of the disease is crucial for beginning effective treatment and better outcomes. Until recently, the answer to their question was no. As a result, most owners have remained unaware of the problem until the cancer was well advanced and had spread throughout the pet’s body. While chemotherapy can help some pets, the treatment is unable to heal most of them due to the advanced stage of most diagnosed cancers, which typically already have been active for six to 12 months or longer. Early diagnosis allows both traditional and natural therapies to be more effective. In some cases, chemotherapy might not even be needed, because natural medicines such as astragalus, essential fatty acids, mushroom extracts, ginseng and green tea may be able to reverse the cancer at its earliest stages. Fortunately, dog owners can now secure an accurate early diagnosis using a new blood panel costing less than $200, including lab processing, that enables veterinarians to detect cancer and other inflammatory diseases before a pet becomes ill. The tests provide valuable information about the dog’s health before overt signs of disease are observed, damage occurs, and treatment options become more limited and expensive. Early detection tests for cancer in cats will be
www.GoNaturalAwakenings.com
available soon. The tests measure several aspects of cell irregularity, including abnormal cell division and systemic inflammatory activity, by detecting any increased levels of thymidine kinase and C-reactive protein in the pet’s body. A study by California’s Veterinary Diagnostics Institute’s VDI Laboratory applying the new blood panel tests to 360 dogs followed their incidences of cancer and other serious diseases for up to a year. The researchers found that nearly all of the cancers that occurred were detected four to six months prior to the pet showing outward signs. Because the cancers were detected early and treated before the pet became overtly ill, costs to the pet owner were greatly reduced and the effectiveness of cancer treatment improved. The new cancer screening tests, which are designed to be part of a routine wellness plan, constitute the most comprehensive single blood diagnosis available in monitoring overall canine health. It’s just as important to check the vitamin D status of canine patients. Low levels contribute to increased incidence of cancer and infectious diseases, according to a study published in the journal Veterinary and Comparative Oncology. Supplementing vitamin D levels is easy and inexpensive and may help reduce the incidence of serious disease later in life. While the new blood panel tests have been shown to be highly accurate in early cancer detection, any test can miss it if the number of cancer cells is too small. Therefore, pets with negative test results should be retested every six months, while positive results prompt further diagnostic tests and initial treatment. Pets with cancer also benefit from these tests because they allow the vet to fine-tune a treatment plan and determine when a cancer may be coming out of remission. The screening is recommended for all dogs 5 years of age and older. Only a small amount of blood is needed and results are available within a few weeks. FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE What is Functional Medicine? By Dr. Michael J. Badanek, BS, DC, CNS, DACBN, DCBCN, DM(P)
F
unctional Medicine is patient-centered medical healing at its best. Instead of looking at and treating health problems as isolated diseases, it treats individuals who may have bodily symptoms, imbalances, and dysfunctions. As the graphic of an iceberg shows, a named disease such as diabetes, cancer, or fibromyalgia might be visible above the surface, but according to Functional Medicine, the cause lies in the altered physiology below the surface. Usually, the cause of the disease and its symptoms is an underlying dysfunction or an imbalance of bodily systems. Named diseases are just the tip of the iceberg. Below the surface, according to Functional Medicine, are the real causes of a patient's health problems. If health care treats just the tip of the iceberg, it rarely leads to long-term relief and vibrancy. Identifying and treating the underlying root cause or causes, as Functional Medicine does, has a much better chance to successfully resolve a patient's health challenges. Using scientific principles, advanced diagnostic testing, and treatments other than drugs or surgery, Functional Medicine restores balance in the body's primary physiological processes. The goal is the patient's lifelong optimal health.
How Functional Medicine Heals a Key Health Care Gap Today's health care system is in trouble because it applies a medical management model that works well for acute health problems to chronic health problems, where it is much less successful. If you have a heart attack, accident, or sudden lung infection such as pneumonia, you certainly want a quick-thinking doctor to use all the quick-acting resources of modern medicine, such as life-saving technology, surgery, and antibiotics. We are all grateful for such interventions. However, jumping in with drugs, surgery, and other acute care treatments often does not succeed in helping those with chronic, debilitating ailments, such as diabetes, heart disease, or arthritis.
