Escape to Long Island’s North Fork.
Farms, Vineyards, Historic Places, Parks & Beaches
What to do? Where to Go? www.gonorthfork.org
Welcome
To The North Fork Long Island’s North Fork is a singular treasure, both physically and as a community. Our landscape showcases open space—farm fields, nature preserves, beaches, wetlands—dotted with historic, New England-style homes. We are a small business community, with many unique shops lining our walkable hamlet ‘downtowns’. We are a community of farmers, craftsmen and artists, united in our love for this land, its beauty, and our traditional way of life. Amazingly, we have kept our authenticity despite being easily accessible to the millions in NYC, CT and Boston. Deep Roots Our traditional cultural identity remains vibrant, in part, because descendants of the New Haven colonists who founded Southold Town in 1640 still live here. Indeed several of our road names honor families who are still a integral part of the NF community. (While the North Fork is larger than Southold Town, it all dates to a similar era.) North Forkers take their history seriously; see how many historic properties and museums we have in our History and Museums pages. Fertile Soil While our deep roots thrive because those original families have stayed, it’s important to highlight why they stayed: this land is truly special. Fertile soil surrounded by fertile bays nestled in a hospitable climate, glorious in natural beauty, the North Fork has been a powerful magnet for farmers, fishermen, aquaculturists and artists for centuries. See how much of a farming community we remain today by peeking at the Farmstands section. Open Space Because our land and waters are so special, Southold Town and others have helped North Forkers resist the lure of cashing out via large, residential subdivisions, instead, preserving open space. See how much of the North Fork’s natural beauty has been protected and preserved by perusing the section on Beaches and Trails. For more structured outdoor fun and exercise, check out the tracks, ball fields, gyms, waterpark and more in Fitness, Fun and Recreation. For More Information While we’ve tried to make this Guide comprehensive, it’s an impossible task—there’s simply too much to feature. For more information, visit our tourism centers in Laurel or Greenport, and visit our websites at NorthFork.org and GoNorthFork.org. What you’ll realize, the more you look into it, is that the North Fork is a great place to visit year round: Easily accessible, endlessly interesting and rejuvenating. Welcome!

In particular, we would like to thank Scott Russell, Supervisor of Southold Town, William Ruland, Deputy Supervisor, County Legislator Al Krupsksi, and Carolyn Fahey, Suffolk County Economic Development.

North Fork Bed and Breakfasts reflect our area’s New England roots, featuring old world charm and welcoming, friendly innkeepers. Each of our 30 or so B&Bs are unique, and a destination in its own right. Consider just a few of the options: a historic home furnished with vintage antiques, a country farmhouse complete with horses and chickens running through the yard, a converted barn located in its own vineyard, or a newly constructed modern house built to order. Find a B&B with a luxurious spa, a private beach, stunning views, fire pits or a pet friendly room. Keep in mind that not all B&Bs welcome kids, though many welcome teenagers. Regardless of where you book, you will enjoy warm, professional hospitality in an intimate setting. To help choose the one for you, The Guide features a B&B Amenities Grid (page 11). We also encourage you to visit the websites of our two B&B organizations: The North Fork Bed & Breakfast Association (www.NFBBA.org), and Elegant B&Bs of the North Fork (www.BBNOFO.com). Once you’ve narrowed your choices, each Bed and Breakfast’s website will let you explore your top picks in detail. When you stay at a B&B, you will discover that the North Fork’s culinary talent isn’t confined to our restaurants. Our Innkeepers take great pride in their breakfasts, laying out a feast every morning, and they locally source many ingredients. You’ll also discover that our innkeepers are “in the know”, happy to share their tips for how to get the most out of your time here. Since our Innkeepers are so committed to your comfort, you really can’t go wrong. But careful consideration of all of your options will help you go from picking a great place to stay to finding the perfect one.

Accommodations - Lodging The North Fork offers a broad range of lodging options: inns, hotels, waterfront
e
Happily for families, nearly every lodging establishment is kid friendly. After careful consideration, every visitor can find a choice perfectly suited to their needs.
When considering where to stay, review the special features of each option
Ol d

detailed in the Lodging Grid on page 16. Some hotels and inns are uniquely set
up to host people arriving by boat; others are particularly convenient to public
transportation. Some offer the homey convenience of kitchens or kitchenettes in
every room. A few have pools, or offer gorgeous beach sunsets every night.
One has an onsite art gallery; another a miniature golf course; a third is
perfumed by the lavender growing on the farm next door and a fourth has private porches and direct beach access from every room. The best way to sort through all
the options is to use our handy grid. The only thing you won’t find, when you look through it all, is the generic dullness of national hotel chains.
Regardless where you choose to stay, you’ll be welcomed by warm, professional
people committed to making your vacation a wonderful escape from your ‘real
world’.

offer special tours and tastings throughout the year. To learn what’s happening when you come to visit, check out the listings at GoNorthFork.org. Although famous as wine country, the North Fork has developed a broad craft beverage industry. Greenport Harbor Brewing has gone from start up brewery to a local powerhouse in just a few years; more breweries have opened in Riverhead. The North Fork has cideries and a few distilleries as well. We invite you to enjoy them all. (If you do, please be sure to take a cab, or have a designated driver.)
Fresh Pond Ave
The North Fork began its shift from potato country to wine country in 1973, when the Hargrave family planted the first vines. They were quickly followed by David Mudd, and over the ensuing decades the industry has grown to dozens of vineyards and wineries. Over the years, North Fork wines have gained acclaim, winning many awards. Each vineyard’s tasting room, like each vineyard’s wines, has its own unique flavor. Some are for 21 and older only; some welcome pets; some offer live music, art galleries and lawn games. Many vineyards

Winemaker Dinners Throughout the year, on weekdays and weekends alike, our local winemakers team up with local chefs to offer unique, sensuous feasts. Often starting with a bit of bubbly and a delightful bite or two as dinner guests gather, these meals generally involve three proper courses plus dessert, each paired with a wine.
The dinners are typically hosted by the winemaker and/or chef, who can describe the origins of the wine, the why of the pairing, and answer questions. Both the vineyard and the restaurant will advertise these dinners, but you must reserve at the restaurant. An easy way to find the next one is to visit www.GoNorthFork.org.

When you’re on vacation, certain services can be simply essential: ATMs, post offices, hospitals, veterinarians, pharmacies and even--hope not--lawyers and the police station. Use the map at right to find all of these services. True, post offices are somewhat out of fashion, but sending postcards to the loved ones not lucky enough to be here with you is still a key part of vacation. Besides, our post offices are historic and quaint, worthy of a visit for that reason alone. To avoid overcrowding the map, we haven’t placed the pharmacies, or other helpful services like florists. They are easy to find anyway; Greenport, Southold, and Cutchogue all have pharmacies right on Main Rd., in the heart of each hamlet’s shopping district. Mattituck has two, virtually across the street from each other, again on the Main Rd. Florists are similarly common. Another essential service worthy of note as you meander our hamlets are our fire departments. They’re all volunteer. These men and women embody the North Fork spirit of community, and we are very grateful for their service.

Year Round Harvest Early North Fork crops include scallops, oysters, asparagus, greens, tomatoes (from greenhouses), rhubarb, and perhaps most fun…baby animals! Some farms will let you feed, pet and pose for pictures with their lambs and goat ‘kids’. As the season progresses, the berries come in, as do peas and cucumbers. Freshly laid eggs abound. Soon the produce, dairy and meat options become overwhelming. Sweet corn and melons are summer favorites. Heading into fall we get apples, pears, grapes, potatoes, pumpkins, and squash of all sorts. In December our Christmas Tree farms become the place to be. Cut your own or get a live, balled tree to plant back home. Throughout the winter and early spring, local greenhouses continue to supply produce at the Riverhead Farmer’s Market.

The North Fork has a rich agricultural history that dates back to New England settlers in 1640. Though potatoes dominated for many years, vegetables, vineyards, orchards, berries, dairy and livestock can all be found today. Another shift has been toward sustainable and organic practices. One thing that has never changed: all of our farms are small, family operations. Our numerous farmstands offer visitors a variety of local, healthy food. Besides produce, many offer meat, dairy, cheese, specialty items, baked
goods and hand crafted gifts. At some farms people can pick fruit, such as apples, berries and pumpkins, or select flowers, plants, trees—even Christmas trees. A few farms provide a full range of play for kids, with bouncy houses, corn mazes and pony rides. Our farming isn’t limited to land; we also have a deep and rich aquaculture tradition. When you visit, be sure to try our oysters, scallops, clams and fish. Even in the dead of winter a few farmstands remain open and you can always find farmers every weekend at the Riverhead Farmers Market, which is open Fall through Spring.

The North Fork is a great place to play outside and be healthy. From the world class waterpark in Riverhead to the pickle ball courts in Southold, every sort of track, field and court is available to the public. Our roads are flat and our scenery beautiful, so biking is a great activity here too. Our creeks and bays are perfect for kayaking and paddle boarding too. (Of course we have stunning beaches for swimming and trails for hiking, but see the section on Beaches & Hiking for that info). But being fit and healthy here isn’t just about having fun in the sun; we take our exercise seriously. While you’re here you can have a personal trainer come to you, or find one at a gym; you can take an exercise class in many styles, or get coaching on a variety of health and wellness strategies. Find the right “fit” for you by checking out the businesses below.

THANK YOU Jon Schusteritsch, North Fork Photographer Many of the beautiful photos in this magazine have been donated by Jon, including Reflections at Kimogenor Point and the red tractor photo on the cover; the sunflowers on page 10; the farmhouse on page 15, the egret on page 17; the vineyard photo on page 20, the landscape on page 42 and the racing sailboats on page 44. Jon exhibits on regularly on the North Fork, and is currently ‘Artist in Residence’ at Martha Clara Vineyards. In addition to these stunning landscapes and nature scenes, Jon photographs weddings, families, and special events of all kinds. Check out his work and get in touch with him at his website, jschusteritsch.com When taking photographs, Jon says he tries to stay true to the scene as much as possible; he doesn’t edit his images much. Like many artists, Jon loves the North Fork’s famously beautiful light, saying the difference comes from the way the bay, the farm fields– our lands–interact with the light. He says “Even if the light is technically the same elsewhere, it just doesn’t feel the same.”

North Fork Museums We have the oldest public observatory on Long Island, the Custer Institute, which ironically is across the street from the Southold Indian Museum. Greenport offers the East End Seaport Museum, which runs lighthouse cruises in the summer, and the Firefighter, a historic fireboat museum, and many more. The Long Island Railroad Museum maintains properties in both Riverhead and Greenport. Sign up for our GoNorthFork.org newsletter to stay on top of all the special events and exhibits. Explore the North Fork’s rich history, arts and culture. Attractions organized west to east Note, many though not all of these institutions are seasonal and/or staffed by volunteers only; please check their hours or make an appointment when planning a visit.

The Artistic North Fork The North Fork’s beauty has inspired artists for centuries, and we have a vibrant arts community. Art galleries and open artists’ studios dot the North Fork, with a significant concentration in Cutchogue and Greenport. Community theater companies perform in Riverhead, Mattituck and Greenport, including staging Shakespeare in Greenport’s Mitchell Park in
the summer. The Historic Jamesport Meeting House hosts concerts, and the newest arrival to the fine arts scene is the Southold Opera House.

The Historic North Fork Colonists arrived from New Haven, Connecticut in 1640, and were welcomed by the Corchaug tribe. Our New England roots are why the North Fork feels so different from the rest of Long Island, and explains a lot about this place: our town greens, bordered by beautiful churches and quaint Main Streets; our architectural style and our agricultural, rather than mercantile, economy. Experience our history by perusing the exhibits at Suffolk County Historical Society in Riverhead, or touring the buildings and collections of the our many other historical societies.

Fishing on the North Fork
by Bill Stamatis
Visitors to the North Fork should take advantage of
some of the most exciting inshore saltwater sport fishing
available on Long Island. Our Peconic Bay and Long
Island Sound are on the annual migratory path of species
like fluke, weakfish, porgies, sea bass, striped bass and
bluefish.
The easiest way to fish is to hop on open/party
boats. They provide bait and you can rent tackle when you come on board. Check their names and
telephone numbers below, and look for updates
at the North Fork Captain’s Association website at www.northforkcaptains.com
Though you can fish the local waters most of the year,
sport fishing begins in earnest at the start of May, and
ends sometime after Thanksgiving. The arrival of fluke
herald the opening of the major season. These migrating

flatfish spawn in the shallow waters of our bays and
harbors, and usually arrive chasing massive schools of
squid sometime in May.
Most of the local charter and party boats ply the waters
around Greenport and Shelter Island to take advantage of the abundance of fish. The protected inshore waters are usually very calm so you can bring the whole family.
Mother’s Day through Memorial Day you can double
up with multiple-hook rigs and catch both fluke and
weakfish. As June begins you can enjoy catching porgies. A day catching all three species is not uncommon.
Porgies are available from the end of May though the
mid-October and are perhaps the most abundant fish in the area. They are a hoot to catch and put up a remarkable
struggle as you bring them to the surface. They are also
one of the tastiest local fish. When porgie fishing, there’s also a chance to catch blowfish or seabass, or a random
weakfish or fluke.
By the time June rolls around, striped bass, the
premiere sport fish in the area, enter our waters after their long migration from Chesapeake Bay or the Hudson
River. Every striper you catch is a potential trophy, and
stripers up to 70 pounds have been caught locally. Of
course, that is rare, but 30- or 40-pounders are caught
here every season. Several boats in the area like the
Rainbow, Nancy Ann, Prime Time III, and Fishy Business specialize in striped bass fishing and may be
available for charter. Check ahead of time because they may not have an opening for the day you want to go out.
Marauding bluefish arrive around the same time as
the stripers and provide a lot of excitement. These tackle-
busting fish have sharp teeth so they should be handled
carefully. Once they spawn they are voracious feeders,
spitting up what they just swallowed to make room for their next victim. Bluefish stay in the area for the entire
season and when September comes around, young and
old can have fun catching the “snappers”-- baby bluefish 6- to 12-inches long -- that patrol the local beaches, bays
and harbors.
Pay attention to seasonal bag limits for each species
and measure the fish to make sure they adhere to size regulations. See NYS Saltwater Fishing Regulations at www.dec.NY.gov
Sportfishing is one of main attractions of the North
Fork. Whether you want fish for the table or a trophy for
the wall, a day of fishing could provide a lifetime worth of memories.

Real Estate
Living here is the American dream. Naturally beautiful, the North Fork is a tiny bucolic farming community with quaint villages surrounded by bays, beaches, lakes and inlets. Here you can escape the growing urbanization of the New York and Boston metropolitan areas while maintaining easy access to both. Fresh food growing everywhere; unusual, mom and pop shops; stunning, peaceful landscapes; a vibrant arts scene; deeply rooted values of volunteerism and community building. Our farm to table, outdoors lifestyle makes healthy living simple. Buying or renting Real Estate is a great way to enjoy our way of life. Many people start by renting here in the summer. Most quickly fall in love with the North Fork and buy a home for summers and then retirement. Increasingly people move here to raise their children, eager for our wholesome ways and good schools. Today’s North Fork is a dynamic year-round community, far less seasonal than before. The energy comes from our diversity: Original colonial families still tilling their land and preserving tradition, mixed with new(er) folks from everywhere and all walks of life adding their talents to the mix. The North Fork has an amazing variety of homes very well adjusted to the area’s interesting citizenry: gorgeous waterfront mansions and tiny vacation shacks; fixer uppers and newly built homes. Or rent an apartment or Bay beach home with pool. If you’d like to consider buying—or to test the waters with a long vacation rental—contact one of the many real estate professionals here. The members of the Hamptons and North Fork Realtors Association and other advertisers can help you purchase or a rent a home or an apartment. Their local expertise gives you the advantage!

You’ll find each day a new adventure. We’re so easy to get to, you’ll never want to leave...
