The Map
For a complete Guide to the North Fork and digital version of this map, head to www.GoNorthFork.org
■ WINERIES, BREWERIES + MORE The North Fork produces world class wines, which is unsurprising because our soil and climate resemble Bordeaux. While every year is good, in 2013, 2014 and 2015 Mother Nature gifted us with perfect weather, leading to “grand” vintages. Enjoy them at any of the 40+ tasting rooms dotting our 30-mile long peninsula. But the North Fork is more than wine; we also have a growing craft beer, hard cider and spirits industry. Greenport Harbor Brewery began crafting in 2009 in a firehouseturned-tasting-room in Greenport [14], and last year added a second brewery location with a Beer Garden-style tasting room in Peconic [9]. At the Peconic tasting room—and many winery tasting rooms—visitors can enjoy live music and special events of all kinds while savoring that hand-crafted drink.
■ BEACHES AND PARKS The North Fork is stunningly beautiful, offering a dizzying array of opportunities to explore nature. We have beaches on Long Island Sound and our Bays, creeks and wetlands—each a unique experience. But we’re not just saltwater; we have a pond and a lake too. State, County and local parks allow you to peacefully explore, hike & fish it all. Birdwatching is particularly spectacular here; May-gration and the Autumn return are lifetime must-dos for birders. Throughout the year, the North Fork Audubon Society (NFAS) leads birdwatching hikes, offers bird and habitat-related lectures and special events at its Red House in Inlet County Park in Greenport. In December, NFAS leads one of the oldest Christmas Bird Counts in America. Come for the birds, the fishing, the hiking, biking or just lounging on the beach, the North Fork has it all.
■ FARM STANDS The North Fork is full of multi-generational family farms, some of which trace back to our 1640 colonization. We grow fruits, vegetables and flowers of all kinds, both conventionally and organically, some certified sustainably. Heirloom varieties abound. We also raise chickens, goats, pigs, sheep, cattle and bison. Several farms offer U-Pick options, including berries, apples and pumpkins; some offer hay rides and other family fun. Sep’s Family Farm [11] specializes in sweet corn, tomatoes and offers a wide array of vegetables, fruit pies, prepared foods and freshly cut bouquets. Fall brings corn mazes, some haunted. North Fork farming extends to our waters; enjoy local oysters, scallops and fish too. Harvest the bounty at our 50+ farmstands.
■ DINING From fabulous, elaborate white tablecloth wine dinners, each course carefully paired with a local vintage, to casual burgers and beer, people on BAR & RESTAURANT the North Fork feast on farm fresh food. Our chefs make sure “farm to table” is more than a foodie gloss. Though we offer many formal dining options, our down-to-earth style means dinner out doesn’t require a tie. Enjoy casual waterside seating, pull up a sidewalk chair, brunch at vintage diners. First and South [13], in Greenport, weaves its commitment to local goodness throughout its menu, from the scallops and oysters raised in our bays turned into gratuitous Happy Hour snacks to House Ground Burgers, Homemade Ketchup, Hand Cut Fries and weekly dinner specials featuring each season’s bounty! When you visit the North Fork, come hungry.
■ ARTS AND CRAFTS OF THE NORTH FORK The North Fork’s famous light has drawn artists for centuries. We have many galleries and open artist studios, even a decades-old artists’ guild. We offer performing arts as well, with a year-round community theater, summer Shakespeare in the Park, and concerts in parks, historic buildings, vineyards, restaurants and bars. The Fiedler Gallery [4] in Greenport features the works of local artists, along with original paintings and prints of Rich Fiedler. A native Greenporter, Rich Fiedler is one of the most highly regarded regional artists on the East End. His paintings of local subjects- tall ships, lighthouses, harbors, barns and beaches- capture the essence of the area. As to crafts, North Forkers showcase skills your grandma would recognize and everyone envies. In December, shop their special holiday pop up shops.

■ MUSEUMS Our museums are small but very interesting, with rich collections. Our historical societies-Oysterponds, Sterling, Southold, Cutchogue-New Suffolk, Mattituck-Laurel and the Hallockville Museum Farm—offer exhibits, tours and events to delight history buffs and the casual visitor alike. The Indian Museum has an outstanding pre-Columbian collection; the Railroad Museum provides family fun; the Fire Boat of 9/11 fame docks in Greenport. The East End Seaport Museum (EESM) is a particularly vibrant institution, featuring a waterfront location, lecture series, and special exhibits showcasing our working waterfront heritage, past and present. EESM also offers lighthouse cruises, tours of “Bug” Light, a working blacksmith shop, and organizes the annual, end-ofSeptember Greenport Maritime Festival & Gala.
■ SHOPPING The North Fork is dotted with historic hamlets, each founded by New England Colonists in the 1600s. Each hamlet has its own feel, and “Main Street” shopping of walkable boutiques, galleries, restaurants and Mom & Pop shops. While the maritime Village of Greenport is our most “urban” area and thus offers the largest array of establishments, and Mattituck’s Love Lane is perhaps the most Norman Rockwell, our smaller downtowns are home to treasures as well. For example, North Fork Natural [6], on the Main Road in Cutchogue, hand crafts and sells their all-natural soaps, skin care, aromatherapy, wellness products and small gifts. Visitors should pay attention as they hamlet hop down the Main Road, as many interesting stores are sprinkled along the way. ■ BIKES, FITNESS & RECREATION The North Fork offers many ways to play outside. Biking’s great for novices and pros alike, as our roads are flat, destinations close, and our vistas are stunning. For those who prefer water play, our creeks and bays are beautiful, vibrant with wildlife, and serene– perfect for paddle boards kayaks, canoes, swimming. Explore on your own by renting bikes, kayaks or paddle boards, or take a tour; tour companies will take you around by bike, paddle you amidst our creeks, cruise you in our harbors. East End Bike Tours [1] specializes in luxury bike rentals and delivery, and offers full service tours of the North Fork, including vineyards, farms and beaches. Golfers can enjoy both regular and mini-golf courses; runners can safely share our roads, or enjoy a track in Peconic; tennis fans should pack their rackets for the public courts. People who prefer gyms are welcome to drop in on ours. ■ MARINAS Boating is a perfect way to experience the North Fork; our waters are wonderful for swimming, fishing and watersports of all sorts. We are surrounded by beautiful creeks, bays, and the Sound. Our fishing is fabulous year round. (We are particularly famous for our striped bass.) To support everyone’s love of the water, we are home to several marinas, all along the peninsula. Port of Egypt [1] in Southold, the oldest Grady-White dealer in the nation, is a marina with award-winning sales and service, seasonal and transient dockage, a Boating Club, outdoor pool, lodging and waterfront event venue at Heron Suites [6], dockside restaurant, and spectacular views of a bird sanctuary and Southold Bay.Motor boats, sailboats, ships small and tall—our marinas welcome you to the North Fork.
■ ACCOMMODATIONS On the beautiful North Fork, where you stay is as much a part of the experience as what you do while here. Options include historic inns, bed-and-breakfasts, waterside hotels and motels—even cabins, converted condominiums, and campgrounds. Farm-to-table cuisine, on site or at a nearby restaurant, is the norm, as is a knowledgeable host to help you make the most of your visit. Every place is unique, with special amenities; no homogenized, national chains here. At Shorecrest Bed and Breakfast [5] enjoy two private beaches with kayaks, a fire pit and shaded lounge chairs, or relax in a hammock in the acre of designer gardens; savor the delicious farm-to-table meal and beautifully appointed bedrooms, living room, library and porch. Find your perfect place to stay, and when you come back, deepen your experience by trying another one.

■ TRANSPORTATION The North Fork is easy to get to, and to get around. We’re just a couple of hours from New York City, the Hudson Valley, Northern New Jersey, Eastern Pennsylvania, Connecticut, and Boston. Come by car, bus, train or ferry. Once you’re here, get around by car (you can rent them here) bike (can rent those too) or take the county bus. New England visitors all take the Cross Sound Ferry to get here. With numerous daily departures, drive or walk on board in New London, CT, enjoy a cruise across the Sound, and dock in Orient Point. Walk-ons can take the high-speed ferry. Cross Sound Ferry hosts EESM’s Lighthouse Super Cruise every year.
