Escape to Long Island’s North Fork.
Farms, Vineyards, Historic Places, Parks & Beaches
What to do? Where to Go? www.gonorthfork.org
Welcome
To The North Fork Long Island’s North Fork is a singular treasure, both physically and as a community. Our landscape showcases open space—farm fields, nature preserves, beaches, wetlands—dotted with historic, New England-style homes. We are a small business community, with many unique shops lining our walkable hamlet ‘downtowns’. We are a community of farmers, craftsmen and artists, united in our love for this land, its beauty, and our traditional way of life. Amazingly, we have kept our authenticity despite being easily accessible to the millions in NYC, CT and Boston. Deep Roots Our traditional cultural identity remains vibrant, in part, because descendants of the New Haven colonists who founded Southold Town in 1640 still live here. Indeed several of our landmarks and road names honor families who are still an integral part of the NF community: Horton, Tuthill, Wickham and Young, just to name a few. (While the North Fork is larger than the current Southold Town, it all has the same roots.) North Forkers take their history seriously; see how many historic properties and museums we have in our Galleries, Historic Sites & Museums pages. Fertile Soil While our deep roots thrive because those original families have stayed, it’s important to highlight why they stayed: this land is truly special. Fertile soil surrounded by fertile bays nestled in a hospitable climate, glorious in natural beauty, the North Fork has been a powerful magnet for farmers, fishermen, aquaculturists and artists for centuries. See how much of a farming community we remain today by peeking at the Farmstands section. Open Space Because our land and waters are so special, Southold Town and others have helped North Forkers preserve their land as open space, instead of turning their land into large, residential subdivisions. See how much of the North Fork’s natural beauty has been protected and preserved by perusing the section on Beaches & Trails. For more structured outdoor fun and exercise, check out the tracks, ball fields, gyms, waterpark and more in Fun, Fitness, & Recreation. For More Information While we’ve tried to make this Guide comprehensive, it’s an impossible task—there’s simply too much to feature. For more information, visit our tourism centers in Laurel or Greenport, and visit our websites at NorthFork.org and GoNorthFork.org. What you’ll realize, the more you look into it, is that the North Fork is a great place to visit year round: Easily accessible, endlessly interesting and rejuvenating. Welcome!

Continued from page 9 deep North Fork quiet, or in the heart of Greenport village. Wherever you stay, breakfast is sure to be a delight; our innkeepers take great pride in their farm-to-table cooking. Keep in mind that not all B&Bs welcome children, though many welcome teenagers. Regardless of where you book, you will enjoy warm, professional hospitality in an intimate setting. To help you sort through the B&B options and find the one right for you, check our grid on page 12. Our hotels, inns, and other lodging establishments are equally diverse. Stay at a boutique hotel in the heart of Greenport, and yet quiet and private. Enjoy fine dining, a historic home and beautiful grounds at one Inn, or pull up to another by boat and use their marina. Get off the beaten path at a bay front motel in Mattituck. Glory in the sunsets on the Sound at the Sound front motels. Take your own cabin with your children, or bring them to the motel with the mini golf course. Book a place with a beach, with a pool, or both. Regardless where you choose to stay, you’ll be welcomed by warm, professional people committed to making your vacation a wonderful escape from your ‘real world’. To help you find the right hotel, inn, motel or other lodging option, check out our grid on page 14.

The North Fork has acres and acres of nature preserves, open space, wetlands, beaches, and clean, fishable waters. Our diverse native flora and fauna even include the Eastern Prickly Pear Cactus (pictured). Our intact natural heritage reflects the hard work of local government and well organized, active citizens, to whom we are very grateful. Enjoy.

Greenport Harbor Brewing has gone from start up brewery to a local powerhouse in just a few years; more breweries have opened in Riverhead. The North Fork has cideries and a few distilleries as well. Some are for 21 and older only; some welcome pets; some offer live music, art galleries and lawn games. Many vineyards

Discover the North Fork Off-Season
As an agricultural community, Spring is a joyous time of green and flowers. It’s also a time before the summer crowds when our restaurants, wineries and shops can work together in ways the summer rush prevents. For example, in spring Caci North Fork—one of our premier restaurants—holds a wine dinner series, each showcasing a different North Fork vineyard. This year the dinners run through mid-June. Those four course prix fixe feature discussions with the winemakers along with the exquisite food, the kind of attention you just can’t get in summer. Also in Spring some wineries will have “pop up shops” to introduce their customers to other local businesses; Bridge Lane did a great series this past April. By mid-May the farmstands begin to open; Wickham’s starts with asparagus, rhubarb, greenhouse tomatoes, and of course its famous baked goods. April through June, the Rites of Spring music festival features fantastic concerts in beautiful North Fork venues, incorporating food and wine into the experience. Very North Fork. Believe it or not, off-season even exists in Summer, as long as you come in the middle of the week. Mid-week you can do everything and get a table at a restaurant much more easily. Peak season doesn’t end Labor Day, because harvest remains in full force. our farmstands are overflowing through Halloween. That said, the last big bash of the season--for Greenport at least--is the annual Maritime Festival in late September, this year September 22-24. Still, weekends remained packed with pumpkin-pickers and corn-maze goers through Halloween. (To pick a pumpkin you’re better off coming on a Wednesday.) Thanksgiving is a beautiful time here, and the Southold Historical Society holds a very special event every Thanksgiving Friday. The many historic buildings are decorated and opened for candlelight tours, with musicians and crafters in costumes as hosts. The evening ends with caroling and tree lighting. December brings Shellabration, a Greenport Village food festival for a good cause, and several historic holiday house tours. In November and December our wineries get less full, so they do more special classes and tastings. If you’d like to taste wine from the barrel, that’s a good time to come. In short, when you think the North Fork, think outside the summer weekend box. You’ll have a much richer experience if you do.

post offices

When you’re on vacation, certain services can be simply essential: ATMs, post offices, hospitals, veterinarians, pharmacies and even--hope not--lawyers and the police station. Use the map at right to find all of these services. True, post offices are somewhat out of fashion, but sending postcards to the loved ones not lucky enough to be here with you is still a key part of vacation. Besides, our post offices are historic and quaint, worthy of a visit for that reason alone. To avoid overcrowding the map, we haven’t placed the pharmacies, or other helpful services like florists. They are easy to find anyway; Greenport, Southold, and Cutchogue all have pharmacies right on Main Rd., in the heart of each hamlet’s shopping district. Mattituck has two, virtually across the street from each other, again on the Main Rd. Florists are similarly common. Another essential service worthy of note as you meander our hamlets are our fire departments. They’re all volunteer. These men and women embody the North Fork spirit of community, and we are very grateful for their service.

Year Round Harvest Early North Fork crops include scallops, oysters, asparagus, greens, tomatoes (from greenhouses), rhubarb, and perhaps most fun…baby animals! Some farms will let you feed, pet and pose for pictures with their lambs and goat ‘kids’. As the season progresses, the berries come in, as do peas and cucumbers. Freshly laid eggs abound. Soon the produce, dairy and meat options become overwhelming. Sweet corn and melons are summer favorites. Heading into fall we get apples, pears, grapes, potatoes, pumpkins, and squash of all sorts. In December our Christmas Tree farms become the place to be. Cut your own or get a live, balled tree to plant back home. Throughout the winter and early spring, local greenhouses continue to supply produce at the Riverhead Farmer’s Market.
Quality growers for over 60 years... Annuals, perennials, mums PLUS our own fruits & vegetables, fresh chicken and eggs.

The North Fork has a rich agricultural history that dates back to New England settlers in 1640. Though potatoes dominated for many years, vegetables, vineyards, orchards, berries, dairy and livestock can all be found today. Another shift has been toward sustainable and organic practices. One thing that has never changed: all of our farms are small, family operations. Our numerous farmstands offer visitors a variety of local, healthy food. Besides produce, many offer meat, dairy, cheese, specialty items, baked

goods and hand crafted gifts. At some farms people can pick fruit, such as apples, berries and pumpkins, or select flowers, plants, trees—even Christmas trees. A few farms provide a full range of play for kids, with bouncy houses, corn mazes and pony rides. Our farming isn’t limited to land; we also have a deep and rich aquaculture tradition. When you visit, be sure to try our oysters, scallops, clams and fish. Even in the dead of winter a few farmstands remain open and you can always find farmers every weekend at the Riverhead Farmers Market, which is open Fall through Spring.

The North Fork is a great place to play outside and be healthy. From the world class waterpark in Riverhead to the pickle ball courts in Southold, every sort of track, field and court is available to the public. Our roads are flat and our scenery beautiful, so biking is a great activity here too. Our creeks and bays are perfect for kayaking and paddle boarding too. (Of course we have stunning beaches for swimming and trails for hiking, but see the section on Beaches & Hiking for that info).

An annual challenge while producing this magazine is using pictures to convey just how stunningly beautiful the North Fork is, how varied the opportunities here are, and just how much people enjoy being here. This year two professional portrait & editorial photographers pitched in: Madison Fender www.madisonfender.com Dave Benthal www.davidbenthal.com Two locals with an artistic eye helped out as well: Jennifer Murray, of Turtleback Farms www.facebook.com/TurtlebackFarm and East End Fencing www.facebook.com/EastEndFencingAcademy Marilyn Marks of Shorecrest Bed and Breakfast www.ShorecrestBedAndBreakfast.com (GoNorthFork’s Abigail Field also added a few.)

Fishing on the North Fork
by Bill Stamatis
Visitors to the North Fork should take advantage of some
of the most exciting inshore saltwater sport fishing available
on Long Island. Our Peconic Bay and Long Island Sound are on the annual migratory path of species like fluke, weakfish,
in the shallow waters of our bays and harbors, and usually
arrive chasing massive schools of squid sometime in May.
Most of the local charter and party boats ply the waters
around Greenport and Shelter Island to take advantage of the
porgies, sea bass, striped bass and bluefish.

The easiest way to fish is to hop on open/party boats. They
Check their names and telephone numbers below, and look
for updates at the North Fork Captain’s Association website at www.northforkcaptains.com
Though you can fish the local waters most of the year,
sport fishing begins in earnest at the start of May, and ends
sometime after Thanksgiving. The arrival of fluke herald the
opening of the major season. These migrating flatfish spawn
very calm so you can bring the whole family.
Mother’s Day through Memorial Day you can double up
with multiple-hook rigs and catch both fluke and weakfish. As June begins you can enjoy catching porgies. A day catching
all three species is not uncommon.
Porgies are available from the end of May though the mid-
October and are perhaps the most abundant fish in the area.
They are a hoot to catch and put up a remarkable struggle as
you bring them to the surface. They are also one of the tastiest

local fish. When porgie fishing, there’s also a chance to catch blowfish or seabass, or a random weakfish or fluke.
By the time June rolls around, striped bass, the
premiere sport fish in the area, enter our waters after their
long migration from Chesapeake Bay or the Hudson River. Every striper you catch is a potential trophy, and stripers up
to 70 pounds have been caught locally. Of course, that is
rare, but 30- or 40-pounders are caught here every season.
Several boats in the area like the Rainbow, Nancy Ann, Prime Time III, and Fishy Business specialize in striped
bass fishing and may be available for charter. Check ahead of time because they may not have an opening for the day you want to go out.
Marauding bluefish arrive around the same time as
the stripers and provide a lot of excitement. These tackle-
busting fish have sharp teeth so they should be handled
carefully. Once they spawn they are voracious feeders, spitting up what they just swallowed to make room for their

Most quickly fall in love with the North Fork and buy a home for summers and then retirement. Increasingly people move here to raise their children, eager for our wholesome ways and good schools. Today’s North Fork is a dynamic year-round community, far less seasonal than before. The energy comes from our diversity: Original colonial families still tilling their land and preserving tradition, mixed with new(er) folks from everywhere and all walks of life adding their talents to the mix. The North Fork has an amazing variety of homes very well adjusted to the area’s interesting citizenry: gorgeous waterfront mansions and tiny vacation shacks; fixer uppers and newly built homes. Or rent an apartment or Bay beach home with pool. If you’d like to consider buying—or to test the waters with a long vacation rental—contact one of the many real estate professionals here. The members of the Hamptons and North Fork Realtors Association and other advertisers can help you purchase or a rent a home or an apartment. Their local expertise gives you the advantage!

Come stroll, meet a shopkeeper or two, and find something you just can’t get

Small Business Community Hamlet businesses cooperate with each other in many ways that help each downtown thrive. For example, Love Lane hosts First Fridays throughout the summer and the fall, a mix of farmers’ market, block party, and smorgasbord. Musicians play, shops offer special ‘bites’ and ‘sips’, aka small servings of wonderful food and drink.

It’s no longer a secret. Since 1640 the North Fork of Long Island has developed its own unique history. Whether visiting one of our wineries, picking up fresh produce, shopping downtown, or chatting over dinner amongst new friends - perhaps a B&B owner - each hamlet has something different to offer. You’ll find each day a new adventure. We’re so easy to get to, you’ll never want to leave...
