Whether your childhood is full of memories of penguins and carousels, or you are being newly introduced, welcome to the Gonzaga Dramatic Association’s production of Mary Poppins! At the heart of this story is the Banks family, who mirrors our own complicated and messy, yet loving families. In addition to showing us that boring walks can become jolly holidays if you only step in time, Mary Poppins also teaches us to embrace change and to find the good even in the lowest moments. I am so excited for you to come along on this adventure with the Banks household as they discover how best to love and support each other, with the help of spoonfuls of sugar and a little gingerbread.
As we have gotten closer to opening night, I keep coming back to Mary Poppins’ final theme: “Anything can happen, raise the curtain. Things you thought impossible will soon seem certain.” I am so proud of this company for tackling challenges we once thought were impossible. This is the most technically complicated show the GDA has produced since Covid, yet impossibilities, like flying and magic, are now realities. Our cast has tackled British accents, tap dancing, and complex harmonies, while our crew has mastered building multipurpose set pieces, wallpapering and shingling, and choreographed set changes. This show has been a joy to direct and I have had an incredibly talented and supportive team of adults without whom this show would have been impossible. We are raising the curtain on an incredible show that we cannot wait to share with you, our audience!
Thank you for your support of the GDA and we hope you enjoy the show!

After a year in the hot seat, Mr. Andrew Curtin ‘01, HoF ‘15 (Assistant Director) is very happy to be settling back into the slightly less hectic assistant director’s chair for Mary Poppins! He is very proud of the cast and crew for their long, hard hours working on this production and their cheerful belief in the impossible. When not in the Gonzaga theater, Mr. Curtin can be found teaching Modern World History and AP Comparative Government in his second year as a faculty member here on Eye Street. Thanks to the production team, cast and crew, and most especially to his wonderful wife Anna and son Brennan for their unwavering support.
Ms. Aimee Gervacio (Choreographer) is excited to work with GDA, bringing with her over 20 years of training in dance and experience in music theater. In addition to being an English teacher for FCPS, Aimee also works with young dancers and actors as part of the studio faculty at MSA. She would like to thank AC, KG, MG, KN, NN, LL, SMG, PB, and the entire Poppins cast and crew for the welcome, support, trust, and “atoning for being educable through delicate beauty”….or for being supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!
Mrs. Meghan Goldsmith, HoF ‘18 (Producer) is honored and blessed to be rounding out her 23rd year with the GDA with the fantastic cast and crew of Mary Poppins! This has been a behemoth of a show to get to the finish line, and she’s forever grateful to have such a stellar production team by her side. Thank you to Kate, Andrew, Nathan, Kimberly, Aimee, Sean and Lucia for your unwaivering dedication and incomparable talent. Thank you to the students in the cast, crew, band and house crew for your tireless efforts in bringing this show to life and sparking joy. A special thanks to the seniors -- whether this was your first show with us or your eighth, you have left an indelible mark on the history of Gonzaga theater, and we’re so lucky to have spent this time together. Last but not least, love and thanks to everyone who has provided support behind the scenes, particularly Paul, Sarah and Allan for their friendship and guidance, her amazing husband Dan for making sure she eats actual food instead of junk, and her three wonderful kiddos Matt, Katie and Emmy for trying to be “practically perfect”...even if sometimes they’re “rather inclined to giggle and don’t put things away”. Enjoy the show!
Ms. Kate Griffith (Director) has experienced nothing but pure joy being able to direct this amazing cast and crew! This show would not have happened without her incredibly hardworking production team: Meghan, Nathan, Aimee, Lucia, Sean, and Kimberly, and most especially her directing partner, Andrew! Memorable directing credits include: The Curious Incident…, Into the Woods, Matilda The Musical, and Death. She has a Masters in Theatre Education and has been directing, producing, and teaching drama for the past decade. She also tap dances, moderates Gonzaga’s Improv Club “No Boys Allowed,” and teaches Geometry at Gonzaga.
Ms. Lucia LaNave (Music Director) is a music director and pianist based in VA, and is an active member of the DC chapter of the American Federation of Musicians (AFM). Recent credits: “The World Goes Round,” “Fiddler on the Roof” (Keys 2, Olney Theatre Center); “Little Shop of Horrors” (Sub. Keys 2, Ford’s Theatre); “Kinky Boots” (Sub. Keys 2, Olney Theatre Center); “Falsettos” (Sub. Keys 2, Rep Stage); “Bat Boy” (Music Director, American University); “The Prom,” “Carrie,” “The Hello Girls,” “Urinetown,” “As You Like It” (Music Director, The Theatre Lab); “Something Rotten” (Music Director, Montgomery College
Summer Dinner Theatre); “Bright Star” (Music Director, Levine Music Theatre); “Lucky Stiff” (Music Director, Nextstop Theatre Company); “The Christmas Angel” (Music Director, Creative Cauldron); “Ride the Cyclone” (Associate Music Director/Conductor, Nextstop Theatre Company). Along with her production work, she has participated in several new musical workshops: “Inside My Head,” written and composed by Zak Sandler (Music Director, The REACH at the Kennedy Center); “Vanishing Girl,” composed by Bill Yanesh and written by Hope Villenueva (Rehearsal pianist, Flying V Theatre). She has also music directed cabarets (including a 90s Girl Group Cabaret for Olney Theatre Center) and played for concert productions (including “West Side Story” for Olney Theatre Center). She has had the pleasure of working with Broadway talents, including accompanying Lisa Howard (25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee) in concert. She teaches voice and piano for the Metropolitan Studio of the Arts. She is a judge for the Virginia High School League (VHSL) One-Act Theatre Competition.
Mr. Sean MacCarthy-Grant (Vocal Director) (he/they) is a pianist, percussionist, educator, and composer based out of Washington, D. C. Sean has performed and taught in organizations from public schools to churches to audition preparation programs across the country and beyond as a pianist and percussionist, touring internationally through Italy and Portugal as choral accompanist and principal percussionist with the North Stars Chamber Orchestra in 2018. Sean has performed in ensembles such as the Maryland Symphony Orchestra, Capital City Symphony, and America’s national jazz band, the Smithsonian Masterworks Jazz Orchestra. His compositions have been premiered by ensembles such as the Atlantic Music Festival Contemporary Ensemble, Wintergrass Festival Orchestra, and members of the Seattle Symphony, and he currently studies multi-disciplinary music at Howard University with faculty such as Dr. Natalia Kazaryan, Chris Barrick, and Charlie Young. Sean performs, composes, and teaches throughout the DMV area, and carries a mission of lifelong learning and the constant development of one’s voice towards a dynamic and powerful musical identity.
Mr. Nathan Nichipor (Technical Director) is a recent graduate of The Catholic University of America where he received his BM in Musical Theatre. He has been working both on and offstage with various regional and community theatres. This is his first season with Gonzaga and he has appreciated the support from the students and faculty. Recent credits include: Sailor (Anything Goes), Catholic University; Freddy (Carrie), Catholic University; Master Electrician (Monstress), Flying V Theatre; Master Electrician (Ride the Cyclone), Next Stop Theatre; Music Director (Island Song), Centerstage CUA; Lighting Designer (Bright Star), Levine Music Theatre.
Mrs. Kimberly Notarianni (Costume Designer) is in her 8th season as a costumer for the GDA and is thrilled to be part of the production staff since 2019. Mom of Spencer (‘17) and Maddie Rose (SR ‘19) she has been costuming the GDA since Mr. Buckley roped her in immediately after chairing Gonzaga’s 35th Anniversary Gala in December of 2016. “Mrs. Noti” has one cardinal rule: Thou shall not eat in costume -- and she always has a secret candy stash in the cage. She promises that all performers will learn how to properly hang up a pair of pants by the end of their GDA career, and she never misses an opportunity to add a little sparkle or sequin to each show. A special shout out to Dr. Noti for his patience with late theater nights, hot glue guns, stray rhinestones, and musical theater playlists!
