DESIGNED IN United States of America Blackspace is a digital makerspace in North Carolina, USA, designed to offer Black and Brown youth pathways to educational and entrepreneurial success in technology, film and the digital arts, to breach the ‘digital divide’. It offers arts-based WokeShops, African-centered events and rituals, and produces creative projects.
CHALLENGE Our challenges are structural. Black communities in North Carolina experience disparities in wealth, education and opportunity, as well as systematic exclusion from living wage jobs. Extensive research has shown, children from low-income communities Black and Brown communities in North Carolina often lack the training, skills, resources, networks, and pathways to change their life trajectory.
SOLUTION Blackspace creates pathways to educational and entrepreneurial success in technology, film and the digital arts to breach the "digital divide". We impact communities by developing tech workshops and curriculums that are culturally relevant and allow students to tell their stories through new media. We offer these resources to youth in our community free of charge.
IMPACT Blackspace's impact is measured in lives saved, events attended, projects produced, interns placed and diplomas received. We have impacted the lives of hundreds of North Carolina youth.

DESIGNED IN Australia Given the ongoing impacts of COVID-19, more people are facing financial stress and the risk of eviction into homelessness. Dear Landlord is a free, online self-help tool supporting renters in Victoria to avoid eviction and stay safely housed.
CHALLENGE Each year* over 18,000 applications are made to evict Victorian renters for falling behind in rent. Through Justice Connect's holistic legal services, we know that financial insecurity is one of the main reasons that people face eviction into homelessness.
We have developed an accessible solution at scale to help renters understand their rights if they are behind in rent, communicate with their landlord about their circumstances, and offer a payment plan to help them get on top of their arrears and stay in their homes.

SOLUTION Justice Connect has taken a human-centered design approach to understand and respond to the changing needs of renters facing eviction. Through our user-testing and client insights, we know that renters facing eviction don't know their legal rights and can feel overwhelmed, which is why we designed Dear Landlord to support renters every step of the way by: • generating tailored legal documents (e.g. a letter to the landlord, application to VCAT) • explaining the eviction process in plain language (including an animation and communications strategy); and • providing guidance to seek further financial and legal support.
IMPACT Dear Landlord builds on Justice Connect's tenancy, housing and homelessness expertise to scale our reach and help renters in Victoria take action to avoid eviction.
Dear Landlord equips renters to understand their rights and prevent avoidable evictions through considered digital design. Dear Landlord also recognises that renters face a range of legal and financial issues, and builds in off-ramps for renters into legal and financial help, including Justice Connect's intensive support, where our network of pro bono lawyers and in-house social workers provide ongoing legal and non-legal help.

The DKO Architecture-designed Lifestyle Communities Clubhouse in Mount Duneed, Victoria, is dubbed a ‘next generation’ recreational facility. The Clubhouse is a standalone building within Lifestyle Communities’ Seniors Living Resort. It is designed to encourage a sense of community and will be enjoyed and frequented by the homeowners.

Porous House is located on Widjabul Country in the Bundjalung Nation (Byron Bay Hinterland, NSW). The project supports a social experiment between two unrelated, multi-generational families (including the architects) working together on the rehabilitation of an adjacent patch of remnant rainforest. The design facilitates interaction and privacy in an environmentally responsive form.

The Sanitary Secrets exhibition and catalogue showcased one hundred period product ads, from 1920 to 2020, that had been published in Australian women’s magazines. In 1907, as pioneers in mental health, Aftercare filled the gap to care for people after leaving hospital. Today, clients choose from a baffling array of providers. Aftercare needed greater focus to compete effectively. The brand, anchored in the past, needed to attract clients hoping for a better future. Aftercare, was renamed ‘Stride’ to better reflect its positioning. The name also speaks to the fact that wherever clients are on their recovery journey, Stride will be by their side. A contemporary identity was also created that adopts a master brand approach.

Mushi (pronounced Moo-shi) is the first wetland made completely out of biomaterials. Wetlands are typically made from plastics that degrade and contaminate bioecology. Mushi is completely biocompatible taking the form of three floating, interlocking triangular-shaped mycelium modules. Mushi is currently being trialled at the Royal Botanic Gardens in Melbourne.

ACMI in Federation Square in Melbourne is the world’s largest museum dedicated to celebrating screen culture and the moving image. At the heart of ACMI’s redevelopment is Constellation, a large-scale digital experience at the end of the centrepiece exhibition, ‘The Story of the Moving Image’. Here visitors explore the unexpected connections between films, TV, videogames and art using media collected within the museum on their Lens, an NFC connected experience.

The Time Layered Cultural Map of Australia (TLCMap) is a set of tools that work together for mapping Australian history and culture. Our team worked to support the redesign of the TLCMap based on user consultation. It was led by the University of Newcastle and funded by an Australian Research Council LIEF grant.
