WELCOME
My introduction to invention and innovation was around six years of age when my father, who was a chemist and physicist at the University of Queensland, brought home a large vat of white cream, plastered it all over my four siblings and myself and sent us out to play in the sun all day.
I found out later that my siblings and I were some of the first non-mice/ mice to test sunscreen in Australia.
I also discovered then that invention, innovation and design involved an enormous amount of prototyping and user testing.
It was wonderful to reconvene in person at the Australian Good Design Awards Ceremony this year after a two-year hiatus! The extraordinary capability across invention, innovation and design was on full display and celebrated by 1000+ guests.
Our Good Design Award winners genuinely impact individuals in every area of our society because design, of course, is in every breath and every part of our lives.
The sheer breadth and calibre of projects across all the Award categories this year made it extremely difficult for our expert judges to choose the ultimate winners. We thank them for their time and commitment once again to helping us find the best inventors, innovators and designers across Australia and the world.
As we urgently look to regenerate our world, there is no more important and critical time for us to collaborate across disciplines, domains and sectors.
It is a plain observation that design can help save our world.
Design is the first, unavoidable step in shaping the solutions to the challenges, issues and problems we face. Our collective future depends on our ability to invent and innovate, to bring design thinking to our most pressing and wicked problems.
Congratulations once again to the 2022 Australian Good Design Award winners. We know this Award will embolden you as you continue your journey, and we wish you every success!
Maybe just try keep your kids away from those early prototypes.

The Australian Good Design Awards is the country’s longest running international design awards and proudly, one of the oldest in the world with its roots going right back to the Industrial Design Council of Australia in 1958. It’s a title we hold with great pride and enormous responsibility.
This Yearbook is a celebration of cutting edge-design innovations that are solving problems, improving our quality of life and helping our planet move towards a more prosperous future.
Without a doubt, our world is facing extraordinary challenges - and extraordinary challenges call for exceptional solutions. That’s exactly what designers create.
Better products, more efficient services, better places and spaces, more holistic experiences, better systems, more profitable businesses, more inclusive societies, more sustainable cities and more prosperous economies.
Companies that invest in design grow their revenues and shareholder returns at nearly twice the rate of those that don’t – that’s a fact. Imagine the ripple effect across our economies if all businesses invested more in design? Imagine the growth in jobs and prosperity that investment in good design can bring to our SME and start-ups? Imagine the benefits that good design could bring to the public sector in the way government designs policy?
Design allows us to imagine a better future and gives us the tools to systematically design our way towards that vision. That is exactly what these Awards are about and why it’s important to celebrate good design in all its forms.
Thank you to the Good Design Awards Jury for their valuable time and commitment to evaluating these amazing projects - we are immensely grateful for the contribution you make to these Awards every year.
My heartfelt congratulations to all the designers, architects, engineers, entrepreneurs and changemakers who designed and developed the inspirational projects featured in this Yearbook – you deserve to be celebrated at the highest level.
