Message from the Prime Minister All aspects of our daily routine are influenced by design—where we eat, sleep, work and relax. Whether we are aware of it or not, it is one of the most powerful forces in our lives. Good design is inspiring and uplifting, and empowers us to be more efficient and creative. Nowhere is this better reflected than at these awards, which remind us of the power of smart, aesthetic and thought-provoking design. The Good Design Awards is Australia’s longest standing national design award and promotion program, and I commend their efforts in fostering creativity, collaboration and competition both nationally and internationally. Our nation’s future prosperity depends on the contributions of a strong creative design industry. Congratulations to all those being honoured through these awards. I pay tribute to Good Design Australia for hosting these awards and wish all participants ongoing success.
The Hon Malcolm Turnbull MP Prime Minister of Australia
“ Our nation's future prosperity depends on the contributions of a strong creative design industry.”

Message from the Premier of New South Wales Good design is an important and integral part of our lives. It has the ability to enrich all of us by transforming urban spaces, creating sustainable practices, advancing technology and simplifying the complex. The Good Design Awards celebrate and commend outstanding achievements in the field of design. This year’s recipients include architects, engineers, teachers, website designers and even beekeepers, who all have one thing in common their commitment to excellence.
The 2016 Good Design Awards were proudly supported by the NSW Government through our tourism and major events agency, Destination NSW. The event attracts visitors from around Australia and overseas and reinforces Sydney’s reputation as a global hub for innovation in the creative industries. I congratulate each of this year’s Good Design Award winners on their success.
Mike Baird MP Premier New South Wales

Message from the Patron The need to elevate design has never been as profound as right now. We are seeing some telling behaviours that reflect inherent anxiety and disillusionment – dissatisfaction with policies and governments, dissatisfaction with services and service standards, the unfairness of inequalities and the fear of economic uncertainty as well as terror. These behaviours are experienced in many ways around the world and require a new way of looking at what we have and what we create – with a focus on design. We have created everything we have – we now have to rethink it to create a new equilibrium. This will require an accelerated elevation of the impact of design: • DESIGN of policies that create an environment of fairness and inclusive growth • DESIGN of the communications around such policies to shift away from empty rhetoric or negative obstruction to realistic and tangible excitement
• DESIGN of a system that enables innovation and entrepreneurship• DESIGN of companies and entities that work together in new ways, that capitalise on each other’s strengths is deliberate ways and create vibrancy in the economy that encourages people to try new things • And yes, the continuous focus on DESIGN of better products, services and experiences – but not only a focus on these!
It should be our aspiration that Australia has a disproportionate global status as a nation of design – the same way for example that Israel has a disproportionate status as a start-up nation. When you page through this Yearbook and look at all the excellent designs, consider what it should look like if we got all the above elements right! This is OUR time, but we have to DESIGN it. It is time to elevate design in a visible and tangible way. And we will be part of it!
At Good Design Australia we accept the responsibility to play a role in the above and we will do it with passion. We had another excellent year of submissions, extra-ordinary winners of categories and many products and services that will now proudly carry our Good Design endorsement.
Gerhard Vorster Patron Good Design Australia
But as proud as we are about the movement we have inspired and created through our Good Design Awards initiative, as concerned are we that design is not understood or embraced at a broader and higher level.
“ It should be our aspiration that Australia has a disproportionate global status as a nation of design.”

Designing for a brighter future Celebrating excellence in design, creativity and innovation matters to us all. As we look to an uncertain future that includes the impacts of climate change, food and water shortages, increasing cost of energy and a growing aging population (to name a few) the role of design in helping address some of these challenges is being widely embraced. Proudly managed by Good Design Australia, Australia’s Good Design Awards is one of the oldest and most prestigious international Awards for design and innovation with a proud history dating back to 1958. Through these prestigious Awards, our mission is to provide a platform to advance new thinking, encourage debate and to help ‘imagine’ a brighter, more prosperous and sustainable future, through design.
Through our annual Good Design Festival, which encompasses the Good Design Awards, the Good Design Showcase Exhibition, Good Design Exchange and the annual Design as Strategy Forum, we remain committed to promoting the value and transformational power of professional design to business, industry, government and the general public. We also recognise the next generation of designers, innovators and game changers through our Young Australian Design Awards. On behalf of Good Design Australia, I congratulate all the designers, engineers, architects, innovators and dreamers who ‘imagined’ the inspirational projects featured in this year’s Good Design Awards and I hope their ingenious work inspires others to design a better and brighter future for us all.
The Awards recognise and celebrate a broad scope of design across the following disciplines: 1 Product Design 2 Service Design 3 Architectural Design 4 Digital Design 5 Communication Design 6 Social Innovation 7 Business Model Design

The Good Design Award® of the Year has always been about an idea whose time has come – a showcase of the multitude of ways that design creates value, commercial and social, in ways that matter today. Last year, it went to the Tesla Model S Sedan a remarkable brand that has emerged as a symbol of game changing thinking that makes a difference at scale, part of a seismic shift in the automotive sector, a truly beautiful, sleek, desirable product and at the same time a market disruptor. The year before it went to the Marc Newson designed Caroma Bathroom Range - a collaboration between high design and a mainstream brand, demonstrating design’s power to reboot a brand as a commercial asset. Again, a beautifully resolved, highly desirable product that transformed the sense of value of a product.
This year, our winner could hardly be more different, yet in a funny sort of way, still the same. It is still about how design changes the landscape, but this is a true grassroots example. It is about the new value eco-system that starts with an idea in a backyard, literally, and created an opportunity through crowdfunding (one of the most successful campaigns in history) because of its ability to capture peoples’ desires and imagination. The end result has created a human connection in a very ‘earthy’ way - a beautiful example of the new possibilities of democratised, local and global. It is not perfectly resolved from an industrial design point of view. It’s not sleek. There are rough edges. But it’s an ingenious improvement on an ancient human craft. And it shows that design, as a process of solving problems that matter to people, has never been more accessible. Tim Riches Good Design Awards Jury Member

About Flow Hive
From the Flow Hive Team
Flow Hive delivers honey on tap - directly from a beehive without the need to crack open the hive. It’s an invention that has literally changed forever the way honey is cultivated and is now being used all over the world. Honey harvested from a Flow Hive does not require any heating, filtering or processing - it comes out pure and clean with all of the aromas and flavours of the local flora.
"Winning the Australian Good Design Award of the Year came as a thrilling surprise because the entries are of such a high calibre. We are so very grateful to the many people who have helped and supported us along the way and very proud that the Flow Hive is designed and manufactured in Australia” said creators Stuart and Cedar Anderson.
The Flow Hive frames have been designed to work with any beehive of standard depth and due to their modular design, can be lengthened or shortened as required to suit any box. Simple, functional design for both bees and beekeepers was a driving factor throughout the development phase. The size, depth, angle, wall thickness and dividing split of the cells were all factors to ensure bees felt at home while discouraging them from using the cells for raising brood. The Flow Hive has been designed to last a lifetime and allow for simple, single part replacements if needed. The frames are made from foodgrade, closed loop, PP, co-polyester and stainless steel and the hives made from 90% FSC certified timber.

"Winning the Good Design Award of the Year is such an amazing opportunity to shine a spotlight on what great design can do for Australia” says Ty Hermans from the Evolve Group. “Through great design and a focus on designing a product to be made locally, you benefit so much more – you get an amazing product innovation that can change the people's lives who get to use your product, but also a product that changes the lives and the community of local people that get to make it. To us that’s a winning formula that Australian design and manufacturing should be focusing on more.”

Lumio outwardly resembles a book, but becomes a sculptural light when opened. It was born of a desire to provide beautiful lighting to people wherever they are -- a design unconstrained by space or power source, and a versatile lighting for modern living. Lumio is rooted in the fact that, in order to experience quality artificial lighting, we are constrained by the availability of a power source. Of the portable lighting options on the market, none provided quality, long-lasting light. So we asked: What if we created a device that combines powerful lighting, in the traditional form of a book -- a book that lights up when you open the cover. It was a simple concept that resulted in a product that's both intuitive for the user and powerful in its application. Lumio’s adaptable form allows it to be used in countless applications, reducing the need for multiple fixtures and helping to optimize space.

Gavi Designed by: Planet Innovation Pty Ltd
Commissioned by: Genea Biomedx
Designed in: Australia Gavi is a world-first automated embryo vitrification system for use in assisted reproduction, aimed at increasing the fertility outcome for families. Providing greater certainty and control for embryologists in the delicate procedure of preparing IVF embryos for freezing, Gavi is an entire product ecosystem built around a unique core Pod technology. The success of IVF embryo vitrification relies heavily on the manual dexterity of a highly skilled embryologist. A repetitive, time consuming process subject to human variation means not all embryos are treated equal. By automating critical steps, Gavi standardises the process and ensures each embryo is treated in the best possible way. Utilising a robotic pipette system to dispense and aspirate the various culture mediums during the cycle, the fluidics system is capable dosing extremely small amounts of fluid in the order of micro-liters. The unique pod system means fragile embryos no longer need to be moved during vitrification resulting in the embryos staying in one place.

Geri Designed by: Planet Innovation Pty Ltd
Commissioned by: Genea Biomedx
Designed in: Australia Successful IVF incubation of delicate embryos relies on maintaining the optimum stable environment during culturing. The Geri incubator does this and more, with sophisticated time-lapse embryo imaging, multiple incubator chambers, and an intuitive user interface. Minimizing the need to disturb embryos during incubation, Geri gives new life every chance of success. Extensive user research led the designers to identify that ideally the incubator needed to have individual chambers dedicated to each patient, to avoid putting existing embryos at risk as new ones are loaded. Precise control of temperature, humidity and CO2 levels within each chamber provides the ideal condition for embryo development. Capturing the moment an embryo divides and how often it redivides over time provides clinicians with the best information to select which embryos are best for implantation into the mother. Geri’s patented technology includes an individual microscope and camera in each of its six chambers allowing the development of each embryo to be photographed more often, providing clinicians with sophisticated time-lapse record of growth.

The Croft house is a small holiday house that clings to the wind swept South Coast of Victoria Australia. It uses the harmonic sine curve geometry to form a protective shape that is in turn sculpted for views, so at once protective and shield like yet open and embracing.

The Australian Novartis building brings together associates from the Novartis Group with an emphasis on increasing collaboration. Reflecting company mission to Care and Cure, the building sought to inspire performance while also inviting the external world in. The design connects Novartis’ new way of working to their values.
The process of re-imagining the Woodleigh School’s learning environments required a deep understanding of ‘The Woodleigh Way’; the values and philosophy underpinning the school’s origins. Recently classified as a ‘Land for Wildlife’ on the Mornington Peninsula, Woodleigh is a progressive co-educational Independent school with an emphasis on independent thought.

Designed by: Cox Rayner Architects and Aurecon Commissioned by: Brisbane City Council Designed in: Australia
Designed by: ASPECT Studios Commissioned by: University of Technology Sydney Designed in: Australia
The new flood-resilient terminals are a world first in their design technology, resulting in many enquiries from overseas flood-prone cities. As satisfying, is that they have engendered a radically enhanced experience of river travel, and have become an intrinsic part of the lexicon of Brisbane’s identity as a subtropical river city.
The University of Technology Sydney Alumni Green has transformed a city campus, juxtaposing brutalist architecture with vibrant, green urban space. The unfenced peaceful, functional surrounds draw in students, staff and wider community. A green, civic centrepiece has been formed by prioritising the design of places for people to work and socialise.
WAX Design created the Glenelg Foreshore Playspace for the City of Holdfast Bay, and transformed a trip to the beach into an adventure that entertains children in new, imaginative and innovative ways. Promoting principles of nature play and risk-benefit, the playspace integrates opportunities for children with physical, sensory and intellectual disabilities.

700bike is an information platform for brands and trends of new generation bicycles. Its aim is to bring a new solution to users riding throughout the city more easily, happily and intelligently, realizing a smoother urban transportation mode.
Donglaishun, established in 1903, is a hundred-year old franchise restaurant. Recently its brand value has weakened and created a dissonance between its history and its value to customers. By designing with its existing historical and cultural importance in mind, we represented the restaurant as it was when it was established, adopting hand-drawn illustrations as core brand elements.
MoPo is a 126 apartment development in Moonee Ponds, Melbourne. Savi was appointed to develop a brand campaign which included; naming, branding, appointment of a brand ambassador, consultation on interiors, art direction, photography, motion, advertising and a destination display suite.

PLUS Designed by: Design + Industry Commissioned by: Design + Industry Designed in: Australia After 27 years operating as one of the largest industrial design consultancies in Australia, D+I asked themselves ‘how do we maintain leadership, expand the business, and develop an enhanced foundation for the future?’ Creativity was their most abundant resource, so they used design thinking to transform D+I into a brand new company, with the core aim of being better at what they do and how they do it. They undertook a reinvention process to expand the business, increase profitability, create an enhanced foundation for the future, and through expansion, create opportunities for team members to advance their careers within the company. To achieve those outcomes, they focused on three areas: Working Environment, Business Processes and Team Culture. The outcome was nothing short of astonishing with profits in 2015 alone increasing by 150% and a further 50% in 2016. The company expanded and established an enhanced foundation for future operation. They went on to write new job titles for the team and re-structured the company to create a career progression plan to allow them to continue to embrace change and evolve into the future.

Acorns Designed by: The Acorns Design Team Commissioned by: Acorns Designed in: USA Acorns allows people to round-up their daily purchases and automatically invest the change into a commission-free diversified portfolio of ETFs offered by the world’s top asset managers. The app was built with natural human behavior in mind to inspire realist investment strategies. Round-ups is the feature which allows Acorns users to invest by just using their spare change. With Acorns, anyone can own a diversified portfolio of over 1000 companies, starting with just $5. The portfolios have been constructed by a team of experts including Nobel Prize winning economist, Harry Markowitz. Using modern portfolio theory, the portfolios seek to give investors the maximum level of return for any given level of risk. With traditional investing there are barriers to creating an effective portfolio and strategy. Not only is it traditionally expensive to buy such a number of stocks and bonds, but the research and expertise required to make the right choices can be unrealistic for most people outside the finance industry. Acorns makes it possible to link your spending accounts (EFTPOS, debit and credit cards etc.) and round up the virtual change from every transaction e.g. if a user buys a coffee for $3.50, Acorns rounds up the purchase to $4 and invests 50c into an Acorns portfolio. The goal of the app is to help people invest money every day, even if it’s just a small amount and the best way to accomplish this is by linking investing to something we all do every day – spending.

DesignInSchools Design Education Through Practice Designed by: Design Managers Australia Pty Limited (DMA) Commissioned by: Macquarie Primary School Designed in: Australia In 2015 Macquarie Primary School and DMA came together to develop a design-learning program for Year 5/6 students. The intention was to undertake a formal, reusable design process to learn service design theory through practice with a real world problem: improving the car park experience. DesignInSchools was co-created with a design and education focus. It was an opportunity to explore with a group of 11 year olds how service design can be used as a creative, problem-solving discipline and how it can extend their current inquiry-based education focus. DMA’s process moved through intent, design research, analysis, prototyping, testing and solution development. The overarching approach was validated with teaching staff and incorporated formal teaching techniques such as the use of a glossary for recall, and split-screening to reflect on process and content. This was applied to a real problem: the perception that the school car park was dangerous and how to improve the experience for all users. The impact of the project is best summed up by feedback from the school’s Deputy Principal: “The entire project has been one of the most inspiring, sophisticated and meaningful learning projects that I have seen in my entire career. I have loved watching DMA bring teachers and learners along together in the process, breaking down traditional barriers and encouraging learning about design, project management, communication and leadership in a real context.”

Lucky Iron Fish Designed by: Gavin Armstrong Commissioned by: Lucky Iron Fish Designed in: Canada Lucky Iron Fish is a certified B-Corporation founded to wipe out iron deficiency, which affects 3.5 billion people worldwide and can result in anemia, weakness, impaired cognition, and illness. This carefully formulated and tested cast iron fish gives a family up to 90% of their required iron intake when used daily during food preparation. While cooking with iron is not an entirely new idea, the Lucky Iron Fish is the first to the market with the distributive idea of cooking with an iron ingot that has been formulated and tested for optimal iron absorption. The designers factored in cultural considerations as part of the design to ensure maximum adoption of the product. The key breakthrough was identifying that the fish was a symbol for luck in Cambodian culture, where the Lucky Iron Fish was first introduced. This saw adoption and persistence rates increase significantly. The solution is much more cost effective and superior to other iron supplements. In Cambodia, a $5 Lucky Iron Fish provides the daily iron needs for a whole family for more than 5 years. As a social enterprise, giving back is fully baked into the business model – for every Fish purchase, the organisation donates an additional Fish to a family in need.
