Message from the Prime Minister From the smallest device in the palm of our hands to the grandest exhibition space, design is central to the way we live our lives. Great design inspires and enriches us, and plays an important role in solving problems, creating efficiencies and improving liveability. It responds to advances in technological innovation as much as it is influenced by social change. So I am greatly encouraged by Good Design Australia in its role of showcasing and promoting excellence in innovative design, a task all the more germane in this age of disruption across so many sectors of industry. As the global economy enters a period of massive structural change, key industries will only flourish in a rich context of creativity and innovation, and investment in the individuals and companies pioneering the applications, products and services of tomorrow. I therefore commend everyone honoured at this year's Australian Good Design Awards, and thank you for your contributions to the long-term future of our nation and our world. I trust that the 2017 yearbook will bring fresh appreciation for your achievements, and the remarkable role that thinkers, innovators and entrepreneurs play in making us a more productive and creative nation.
The Hon Malcolm Turnbull MP Prime Minister of Australia

Message from the Patron Writing a message for a yearbook always forces one to reflect. The question we, as designers of products, buildings, businesses, governments and communities have to keep asking ourselves is “Have our actions made a difference to the domain we are trying to impact over the last 12 months?” This is a very personal question, and rightly so! At Good Design Australia we made 2 conscious decisions: firstly, to continue with the very important collection and amplification of good design through our Good Design Awards and we had our best year ever of submissions, excellent deliberations and a great celebration of design excellence. Secondly, not to become too comfortable with what we have and who we are. We have therefore put much more of a focus on our Design as Strategy Forums and international involvement in such, we have extended our alliances with a number of entities and we have been a key participant in getting Sydney shortlisted as the next World Design Capital® in 2020 - and this is just the beginning! But the question remains – has this made a difference to a better Australia and a better world, through design? Has this contributed to Australia having a disproportionate global status as a nation of design? We believe that our success has been mixed. The achievements speak for itself, but we yet have to convince various layers of government of the importance of design as a national (or even a local) priority.
We yet have to entrench design as a core response in business strategies and we yet have to elevate design to the same level of importance as STEM skills. Our work is not done, but we have increased the odds by increasing the different points of entry to spread the design message, we have increased our alliances and partners to improve the amplification of the message and we have sent a message to the world that Australia and its cities are serious about design. Combined that forms our new promise and we accept the responsibility of such. If you read this, you are a DESIGNER. In reading through our Good Design Awards Yearbook I would like to urge every reader to reflect with us. Celebrate the successes, but also ask: “Have MY actions made a difference over the last 12 months and what more should I do to move the design dial?” Individual action is a prerequisite for collective power.

2017 This year, after hours of deliberation the Good Design Awards Jury chose not to select a single project and for only the second time in the history of these awards the Good Design Award of the Year was awarded to two exemplary projects.
Tesla Model S The Tesla Model S is engineered to deliver unprecedented range and a thrilling drive experience and is the fastest four-door vehicle ever built. With a rigid body structure, nearly 50/50 weight distribution and a remarkably low center of gravity, Model S offers the responsiveness and agility expected from the world’s best sports cars.
Whilst these projects are worlds apart in their applications they are both exceptional in every element. The diversity of these two projects beautifully demonstrates the breadth of design today and the potential it has in every sector. Both of these projects co-designed solutions to complex and challenging problems. These award-winning solutions work to create lasting change within their communities and can also be scaled to create change around the world.

AN EXCELLENT EXAMPLE OF A MULTI-DISCIPLINARY COLLABORATION Brisbane's new generation ferry terminals grew from the imaginations of a team passionate to find a better way to make critical transport infrastructure more flood resilient and allow travellers to better celebrate the river. The result: natural disaster resilience that allows operations to return shortly after flooding. Flood Resilient and Accessible Ferry Terminals for Brisbane
OF THE YEAR 2017

Commissioned by: Brisbane City Council

www.aurecongroup.com
“The Award is deeply exciting evidence that innovation is not a one-discipline show and that collaboration across a diversity of experience and expertise is key to creating innovative, world-first solutions. We used teams who hadn’t usually designed ferry terminals, let alone collaborated. By doing this, we created game changing design for humanity, which begs the question: what if all infrastructure could be designed to be resilient and truly accessible? Arne Nilsen Design Director, Aurecon
21
“ Winning the Good Design Award of the Year 2017 is proof that the role of the engineer is to interrogate the impossible; to answer, “I think we can!” when others have said it’s impossible. Our work needs to go beyond function and incorporate purpose, form and the human experience at every step. The Award also represents a challenge to our industry as a whole: we believe engineering can and should be reimagined. It’s time to think possible.” John McGuire Global Chief Innovation Officer, Aurecon
Intelligent Design that can be Exported to the World This elegant flood resilient design raises the profile of the Brisbane City Council’s public transport infrastructure and can be adopted by any ferry terminal network around the world, particularly those subject to flooding. The unique design features result in a terminal that can return to operation shortly after significant flood events. The successful implementation of a worldfirst gangway that maintains level landings at different river levels opens up the possibility of other applications in any varying height access situations in the public transport industry, including aerobridges and cruise vessel access to name just two. 22
The Challenge Critical transport infrastructure in Brisbane was devastated when the river flooded in January 2011. Teaming their skills in new ways, Aurecon and Cox Architecture stretched conventional boundaries to redefine the possibilities in resilience, form and user experience.
The Solution Brisbane’s new generation ferry terminal is a world-first accessibility compliant gangway in a significant tidal context. It grew from the imaginations of a team passionate to find a better way to make critical transport infrastructure more flood resilient and allow travellers to better celebrate the river. This imagination helped create superior natural disaster resilience that allows operations to return shortly after flooding.
A Focus on Sustainability Conscious of the responsibility to design for future generations, the design uses durable materials and resilient features: such as the upstream fender, crumple zones and pier deflection structure, and of course the detaching gangway which reduces the likelihood of damage to the terminal and other river infrastructure during flood events. Once the flood is over the gangway can easily be reinstalled. The flood release system uses solely flood flow and geometric mechanisms. It is fully automatic and requires no external inputs. The terminals also use low power LED lighting supplied with green power. In addition elements from the previous terminals were repurposed wherever possible to reduce the need for additional and replacement materials. To enhance the commuters’ experience and connection to the river, a single sculpted upstream pier removes all visible piles from the river landscape and the pontoon provides largely unobstructed views of the river.

The Challenge
Old School
Research showed that a significant minority of New Zealand 8–12 year old students fell behind in writing and once behind, they rarely caught up. The challenge was to design an innovative resource for use in schools that would inspire students to write creative stories — whilst increasing their literacy levels.
In a context where digital interfaces are dominating the conversation and certainly holding the attention of students, the design of compelling physical resources is becoming more of a rarity. Game of Awesome intentionally stands out, as a disruptive take on an old format — card play.
The Solution Chrometoaster worked with teachers, students and a whole bunch of stakeholders to create The Game of Awesome. Game of Awesome inspires students to write by stealth. Gameplay is truly fun, with content pitched perfectly to the kids' taste, thanks to their co-design practice. Stories are created using gross, random, ordinary, scary, and daring idea cards as prompts and illustrations are packed with colloquial NZ humour, make it uniquely “awesome”.
The brash new take on an old idea makes the resource both curious and compelling to young learners. And thanks to well-trod gameplay mechanics, the game quickly delivers serious learning outcomes ‘by stealth’— as it doesn’t seem like conventional schoolwork.
The Social Context For many kids literacy can be a challenge that has a major impact on their learning. And when it comes to writing, research clearly shows boys in particular can struggle and are increasingly likely to express themselves less and less. Driven by research, Game of Awesome is designed to help arrest this decline through inventive, literacy-based gameplay. It kickstarts creativity in a way few other resources have been able to. The game aims to inspire imagination; lift literacy and foster a love for writing. It acts not only as a ‘safety net’ for struggling learners, but challenges more accomplished students; it is a tool for 'getting started', which is widely considered the hardest obstacle to overcome. And… it’s fun!
“ Not only is this a beautifully designed object from a product design perspective, it is helping educate our younger generation in a very unique and innovate way.” Good Design Awards Jury
26
“ What an incredible honour! The calibre of the competition this year was exceptionally high. It’s both humbling and mind-blowing that an educational card game, designed with the help of Kiwi kids, can excel at this international level. As design practice increases its focus on consequences, in contrast to artefacts, we're proud that our co-design approach stood the Game of Awesome apart as an example of next-level public good design.” Dave Turnbull, Founder, Experience Director, Chrometoaster

GOOD DESIGN AWARD FOR SUSTAINABILITY The Good Design Award for Sustainability is awarded to an entry that represents the highest level of excellence in sustainable design practices and that in the judge’s opinion will have a positive impact in promoting excellence in sustainable design. This year’s winner exemplifies excellence in sustainable design practice in its broadest sense. It is evident that the reduce-reuserecycle ethos has been at the core of every decision throughout this project, both at a macro and micro level. The heritage of the site has been sensitively and thoughtfully reimagined, to create an area, which not only looks to the future but also works to engage the community that occupies it today. 2017 GOOD DESIGN AWARD FOR SUSTAINABILITY
A set of robust urban design protocols provided guidance to the implementation of projects over a number of years, rather than a fixed design program or traditional master plan. The influence of a coordinated, sustainable public realm is now being realised. Australia's first innovation district, supports green infrastructure and its importance for future planning.
A NEW TYPE OF ADAPTABLE The Challenge The Government set a clear brief – the 61Ha former Mitsubishi manufacturing park was to become a sustainable centre for innovation and productivity, offering a collaborative environment that supports high-value industry and contributes to the state’s economic success.
The Solution Tonsley Innovation District is Australia’s first innovation district that employs green infrastructure and supports it’s importance for future planning. The realised public realm makes a significant contribution in defining Tonsley as a known, distinctive and exemplar place and it’s unique characteristics demonstrate how integrating strategic thinking and design as early as possible in the planning phase of a project can lead to exemplary design outcomes. Tonsley has been awarded Australia’s first 6-Star ‘World Leading’ Green Star Communities Certification, recognising the project’s commitment to sustainable outcomes in a mixed-use development. This design approach supports an economic climate of the state for years to come by creating increased employment opportunities and affordable living.
32
SPACE The Social Context The urban design strategy was conceived not as a fixed master plan, but as a “development palette” to establish a robust framework and pathway that directed future planning, architecture and public realm design. The project vision was embedded within the strategy - low carbon and climate resilient infrastructure, technology and systems that demonstrate innovation in public space, governance, delivery models and partnering. The projects developed to date include the Main Assembly Building forests, lighting, floor and foyer carpets, the Tonsley streets, external plazas and spaces, retaining walls, town square, wayfinding, public art and bespoke furniture - all reflect this urban design agenda and so realise a project of consistency, high quality detailing, site relevance and environmental responsibility.
Addressing Contemporary, Social and Cultural Issues and Site History The values built into the design reference the rich and significant layers of cultural and social heritage of the site whilst promoting innovation that surpasses best practice. The design retains the site’s pre-European, agricultural and manufacturing heritage whilst expressing a new future as an innovation district of Australia. The design team’s approach was to build on the existing layers of site heritage and retain the Main Assembly Building. Raw concrete materials, including corten steel, timber and concrete, were used consistently to reflect the existing concrete floor and open steel truss roof structure and items from the old manufacturing plant were retained, including repurposed steel from the existing trusses that were used to create way finding totems. ‘Cut out’ sections of the roof allow for a series of internal forests to be inserted into the existing industrial structure, allowing the landscape to emerge from the framework. The open section exposes Adelaide’s incredible blue skies and helps to ‘breathe’ the MAB. Tonsley has been designed in a way to support an economic climate for years to come. As such the State Government has been willing to invest more in quality infrastructure, products and solutions to achieve whole-of-life costing with an increased long term benefit.
