MESSAGE FROM THE PREMIER I am proud to support the 2014 Premier’s Design Awards. Design touches our lives each day. When we catch a train, drive a car, make a cup of coffee, talk on the phone or shop online, our experiences are shaped by the innovation and enterprise of great designers. In a crowded global marketplace, design provides the tools to create and capture markets, and to grow and sustain value for business and consumers. The design sector makes a significant contribution to the Victorian economy, generating annual revenue of $7.3 billion and exports worth more than $200 million. More than 195,000 Victorians are employed in design-related roles. Presented annually since 2012, the Premier’s Design Awards promote and celebrate creativity and excellence in design, as developed and practised by local designers and businesses. Once again, the standard of entries was exceptional, confirming the depth of design talent in Victoria. Each award winner may use the prestigious Premier’s Design Awards trade mark to promote their business as a leader in design. I would like to thank and congratulate Dr Ken Cato AO and all the members of the awards judging panel, which doubled in size this year to better reflect the diversity of design across our community. This annual awards program celebrates the very best of Victorian design and innovation and provides a unique platform for Victorian designers and businesses to showcase their best work to a national and international audience. Achieving excellence in this space is not easy - it requires a careful blend of creative talent, unwavering passion and a healthy dynamic between designer and client who have an appetite for risk and a big enough imagination to stretch the innovation envelope. The design projects featured in this year’s Premier’s Design Awards exemplify this sort of thinking and reaffirm the international calibre and diversity of Victoria’s design and creative sector. ABOUT THE PREMIER’S DESIGN AWARDS Curiosity, courage and creativity are crucial for design led companies to develop products and services that their customers value and enjoy using.
Design helps firms to compete on difference by anticipating, creating and satisfying a market’s current and unmet needs and ultimately enhancing user experience. Design continues to make a vital contribution to the Victorian economy, employing more than 195,000 Victorians in design-related roles, and generating more than $200 million in design-related exports. This year’s awards recognise entrants across the six award categories with the judging panel nominating best in category winners in addition to an overall winner of the Premier’s Design Award. The winning projects in all six award categories address the key strengths of human-centred design delivering sustained economic and social benefits for designers, firms and all Victorians. Chaired for the third year by Victorian design icon, Dr Ken Cato AO, the judging panel again comprised leading local and international design thinkers to assess applications in each award category. The Premier’s Design Awards are central to the Victorian Design Initiatives 2012-15; they recognise and celebrate the quality of Victoria’s design capability to create innovative products and services that are attractive for users, and also increase productivity and business outcomes for Victorian firms.

Dr Ken Cato is an Australian designer with an international reputation. He is Chairman of Cato Brand Partners, established in Melbourne in 1970 and with offices throughout Australia and across the world. Ken acts as the Chairman of the 2014 Premier’s Design Awards Judging Panel. As a graphic designer, his work has earned him an international reputation and encompasses all facets of corporate and brand management and design. He has won numerous international and Australian design awards and his work is represented in museums and galleries throughout the world. He is a long-standing member of Alliance Graphic Internationale and is a past AGI President (1997 – 2000). The world’s largest student design conference was founded by Ken Cato in 1991. For more than twenty years, agIdeas International Design Week now attracts annually over 4,500 young designers and over 40 speakers from around the world. In 1995, Ken was awarded the first Australian Honorary Doctorate of Design from Swinburne University and was inducted into the ‘Hall of Fame’ of the inaugural Victorian Design Awards. Ken is a foundation member of the Australian Writers and Art Directors Association, a member of the American Institute of Graphic Arts, ICOGRADA, Design Institute of Australia (Hall of Fame inductee in 2005), Australian Marketing Institute, Industrial Design Council of Australia, and is Patron of the Australian Academy of Design. In 2006, Ken was awarded the Victorian Premier’s Award for Design Leadership and in 2009 was honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Executive Board of ICOGRADA. In 2011, Ken was awarded an Honorary Fellowship from Monash University and in 2012 was also inducted into the AGDA Hall of Fame. In 2013, Ken received an Officer of the Order of Australia award in the Queen’s Birthday Honours.
One of Austria’s most talented and awarded designers and educators, Cordula Alessandri is well known for her distinctive work in packaging, corporate identity, wine and food labels, annual reports, publications and websites. Since founding her own studio, alessandridesign in 1987, Cordula has since enjoyed enduring success and won numerous awards, including the Austria National Award for Book Design, the European Design Award, ADC of Austria awards, ADC of Europe awards, ADC New York awards, TDC Tokyo awards, Best Calendar Awards, Golden Label Awards, Red Dot Awards and a Golden Pixel Gold Award. Cordula became a member of Alliance Graphique Internationale in 2003.
John Bielenberg is a designer, entrepreneur and imaginative advocate for a better world. He is the founder of Project M and co-founder of Future Partners, a company that helps companies and organisations unlock their ingenuity to solve their greatest challenges. John delights in helping people find the courage and sense of humour to bring their stories, ideas and ingenuity out into the world. Believing that ‘thinking wrong’ can lead to creative success, his design philosophy is ‘be bold, get out, think wrong, make stuff, bet small and move fast! Through Project M, John inspires and educates young designers, writers, photographers and filmmakers by proving that their work, and “wrong” thinking, can have a positive impact on their communities. In 2013, John was awarded the AIGA Gold Medal, the highest honour of the design organisation. It is one of more than 250 awards he has received throughout his career. The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art has acquired six of his design projects.
Tony is a designer, publisher, collector and curator, founding design studio, Spin, in 1992 and the publishing company Unit Editions in 2009. A multi-disciplinary studio, Spin is built primarily for the creation of innovative contemporary identities. However the studio’s work in print, motion graphics and digital media has also won many awards and is regularly featured in many blogs, books, magazines and exhibitions. Making books by designers for designers, books published by Unit Editions so far include monograph’s on Herb Lubalin, FHK Henrion and Ken Garland. They recently published ‘Manuals’ a celebration of corporate guideline manuals from the golden era of identity design. The books are designed by Tony and Claudia Klat at Spin.

For more than 30 years, Dan has brought the design process to life through his ever-evolving research methodologies and a deep understanding of people’s emotional and physical needs.
Steff Geissbuhler is among America’s most celebrated designers of integrated brand and corporate identity programs. His work also includes posters, brochures, books and illustrations. Steff has designed architectural graphics and sign systems for various institutions, environmental graphics and exhibitions.

Dan plays a key role in cementing product experiences that meet the needs of people with a wide range of abilities, especially at the edges of the spectrum – those with arthritis, dexterity, cognitive or vision problems. He mentors design teams to uncover the latent needs of consumers while keeping business objectives top of mind. In particular, he works with health initiatives to help identify ways of understanding and improving patient experiences across all touch points. Dan is a consultant in design and design research. He has developed products and services in a wide range of categories. He was a founding member of Smart Design in New York City. With a background in product design, he holds a Masters and a Ph.D in Ergonomics and Biomechanics. His work has received numerous design awards and has been selected for national and international exhibits.
Steff’s work has been honoured with the American Institute of Graphic Arts Medal for his sustained contribution to design excellence and the development of the profession. Steff served as the US president of the Alliance Graphique Internationale and has been a member of the board of the American Institute of Graphic Arts. He is past president of AIGA’s New York chapter. Prior to founding geissbuhler. design in 2011, Steff was at Geigy Pharmaceuticals, Basel; Murphy Levy Wurman Architects, Philadelphia; Anspach Grossman Portugal, New York, and a partner and principal at Chermayeff & Geismar Inc. for over 30 years before cofounding C&G Partners in 2005.
Dale is a thought leader on the future of media consumption in an interactive and “many-screen” world of increasingly rich media interfaces. With an extensive background in Broadcast Design and branding, he was creative director of on-air design and branding for the three CBS Sports Winter Olympics broadcasts in the 1990s. Dale has pioneered a unique spatial approach to designing navigation systems for Interactive TV and connected screens. The work begins to blur the line between television, games and web, a concept he calls “New Television.” Dale was a part of the research team that developed the visionary gestural interfaces that first appeared in the film Minority Report, and is now leading development work in the rapidly emerging world of gestural navigation for screens at a distance. Dale has won four Emmy Awards, and is also the winner of the inaugural Interactive Emmy Award (London, Los Angeles). More recently, Dale co-founded the company SeeSpace, which will deliver its first product, inAiR, later this year. InAiR places dynamic Web content in the space in front of the Television, perhaps the first Augmented Television experience.

Chances are Richard is responsible for at least one of the small appliances in your home. With 27 years’ experience Richard has overseen the design of over 330 household appliances sold in over 50 countries. Richard is Director of Design and Innovation for Breville Group where he is responsible for Breville Design globally. He was previously Director of Design at Sunbeam. Under Richard’s guidance his teams have won over 60 design awards internationally. Richard sits on the executive team at Breville Group where he helped refine the purpose and values that drive the Breville brand. He was involved in the positioning, strategy and launch of the Brevile brand into North America in 2003, as well as the current ‘Food Thinking’ brand strategy. Richard and his team also collaborate with food experts around the world including arguably the world’s best food thinker Heston Blumenthal. Richard lives in Sydney with his wife, three children, two dogs and six chickens.

During the years 1977-2001 Ray was co-founder, managing partner and later Chairman of Designworks Group, the Australasian brand identity consultancy. During this period Ray advised many of New Zealand’s largest corporations on competitive strategy and brand positioning.
Since forming Sydney-based Neeson Murcutt Architects, Rachel’s practice deliberately pursues a balance of public and private work, operating in urban, suburban, rural and outback settings across Australia.
Anupama is known for her researchoriented practice and her practiceoriented teaching. Anupama’s internationally recognised and award-winning architecture practice demonstrates a strong focus on material research and experimentation towards an architecture that has low environmental impact and is appropriate to the socio-economic context. Anupama has built extensively in India and has had the experience of working, researching and teaching in a variety of cultural contexts across the world: TU Berlin, AA London, TU Darmstadt, Parsons New School of Design, New York and currently teaches at University of Queensland in Brisbane. Her recent contribution to the 13th Venice Architecture Biennale involved the full-scale facsimile of her Indian project Wall House received international acclaim. As a runner-up in the 2013 ArcVision International Prize for ‘Women and Architecture’ she received an ‘Honorable Mention’ by the jury for ‘her dedication when approaching the problem of affordability of construction and sustainability in all aspects’. In 2013 she also won the Dr. Vishnu Joshi award for the best Ferrocement structure by the Indian Society of Ferrocement. She is one of six international architects invited by the Barcelona City Council who created an ephemeral installation in collaboration with IAAC, Barcelona; TU Berlin and UQ Brisbane as part of the initiative to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the historical events of September 11th 1714, symbolising the recovery of Barcelona by its citizens.
Ken Tsai Lee has earned an international reputation as a designer, educator and curator. As well as running a design lab in Taipei, Lee is an assistant professor at the National Taiwan University of Science and Technology, the visual director of Taiwan Designers’ Week and regional representative of the New York Art Directors Club and New York Type Directors Club. Since establishing his studio in 1996, Lee has been recognised with numerous design awards including the D&AD, TDC NY, TDC Tokyo, Red Dot, One Show Design, Communication Arts Design Annual, Typography Annual, Graphis and Design for Asia Awards. As a Visual Director for Taiwan Designers’ Week since 2008, the event has become the biggest design event in Taiwan. Lee also participates in many design exhibitions worldwide, curating the 70/80 Taiwan Designers Exhibition in China in 2008, bringing the Type Directors Club Annual exhibition to Taiwan annually since 2009. Ken also co-curated the ‘Post-Contemporary International Poster Retrospective’ for a Beijing World Design Congress 2009.
In 2002-3 Ray co-chaired with the Minister of Economic Development the NZ Govt. Design Taskforce to develop a strategy for employing design for national economic advantage. This resulted in the ‘Success by Design’ strategy which set out to assist NZ businesses to become internationally competitive by enabling them to integrate world class design thinking and practices into their culture, capability and business model. Subsequently, as part of the Equip Design Integration team, he was involved in developing a design capability improvement model, which was adopted by Better by Design in New Zealand and successfully employed with over 150 SME businesses. Ray has personally been involved as a capability auditor, mentor and advisor with over 80 highly diverse SME businesses of which most are manufacturers.
Rachel’s work has been recognised locally and internationally through awards, publications, lectures and exhibitions, including the 2006 and 2008 Venice Biennales, the Australian Institute of Architects’ Robin Boyd Award for the Castlecrag House (2011) and the Institute’s NSW Chapter Wilkinson Awards for both the Whale Beach House (2009) and Five Dock House (2007). Recently completed projects include a desert campsite and an outdoor public pool complex which won the 2014 Good Design Award® for Architecture and Interiors, the Medal for Landscape Architecture at the 2013 NSW AILA Awards, and “Best of the Best” at the 2013 Sydney Design Awards. Rachel’s other projects include a primary school addition, a new surf club, a community centre refurbishment and an apartment building. Rachel was awarded the Board of Architects 2002 Byera Hadley Travelling Scholarship and completed a Masters of Architecture in Barcelona.

As an engineer, automotive designer and design researcher, Søren assists top-tier international organisations to translate business ideas into actionable design concepts for sustainable progress.
Gabriela’s graphic design work has won several international and national awards. She is active in editorial design, corporate identities, package design, posters, social, commercial and political campaigns, TV identities, and environmental design projects.
Since founding his consulting firm ingomar&ingomar in California in 1993, Søren has worked with BMW Group, DesignworksUSA, Ramboll Group, the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales, Stanford University, Copenhagen Business School, Fraunhofer Institute, Delft University, Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Kookmin University and Hanyang University.
Gabriela has used motion graphics, managing communication campaigns, including TV spots, promotional branding videos, webpage design, and design applied to large public spaces. She has done several graphic design events and international exchanges such as the AGI Congress (Oaxaca 2000). She was representative and Creative Director in México of Cato Brand Partners (2003-2005).
Richard is one of Europe’s bestknown product designers. Richard’s career has taken him from book and record-sleeve design, though advertising and film production design, to a commanding position on the international stage with Seymourpowell (which he created with Dick Powell in 1984).

His research areas are design strategy, methods and tools for bridging business and design using design quantification. This includes design & business model experimentation, design balanced scorecards, design driven portfolio management, inspirational design briefing, managing designers’ risk attitude and crowdsourcing design research.
Nowadays, she runs VERDMX (a citizen brand), working in education and green solutions. Gabriela develops strategies for getting green solutions and new business. She works also in communications projects combining art, environmental actions, marketing and design.
Seymourpowell is now regarded as one of the world’s leading product and innovation design consultancies. Their clients include Ford, Virgin Galactic, Tefal, Casio, Victoria’s Secret, Guinness, Samsung and Unilever. The consultancy has won numerous awards for design excellence over the past three decades, including several D&AD silver awards, the BBC Design Award and several DBA Design Effectiveness Awards. The pair have also been awarded the D&AD President’s Award for Outstanding Contribution to Design, three shortlist nominations for the Prince Philip Design Prize and voted sixth Most Important Shakers and Movers in British Culture by the BBC. Richard himself has also won D&AD Awards for his work in graphic and advertising design, and the Smarties Innovation Award for book design. He is a past president of D&AD (1999), has sat on the UK’s Design Council and was a founding board member of the DBA and in London. In 2006, he was presented with a senior fellowship of the Royal College of Art. He has also received, with Powell, an Honorary Doctorate from the Michigan Centre for Creative Studies and an Honorary Masters Degree from the Surrey Institute.

Jane studied with the New York School of Interior Design and has completed studies in horticulture and landscape design in Sydney. She is uniquely both an interior designer and a landscape designer and treats indoor spaces and outdoor spaces with equal affection, enabling the creation of seamless indoor and outdoor rooms. Jane is a member of the Design Institute of Australia (MDIA) and the Australian Institute of Landscape Designers & Managers (AILDM). Stark Design works internationally and has completed projects in New Zealand and the USA. The practice provided the interior design services to Chicago architectural firm mac D+A for the I&S Residence in Chicago Illinois, which was awarded an interior architecture award.

Simon was a founding partner of Deepend in 1994 which grew into a global firm, becoming the number one creative agency in the UK for three years running and number one in the world in 2001. Following Deepend, Simon co-founded Poke in 2001, which was a vehicle to challenge everything he and his partners had learned, practiced and preached. Poke became the number one digital studio in the UK in 2006.
Heather is the Strategy Director at Cato Brand Partners New Zealand, and applies her 25 years international experience in strategy, marketing, branding and team management to help clients tell their unique stories, on strategy, and with powerful visual effect.
In 2007 Simon became the first digital president of the D&AD, and he was also awarded the title of Royal Designer of Industry, the highest UK honour in design in recognition of his work in the area of digital design. Simon sat as a trustee of the Design Council CABE and is currently on the advisory board for the Art Directors Club of New York. Today he is the Vice President and Creative Director of OnCue, which was born in Intel’s Labs and acquired by Verizon in early 2014.
As strategic lead in the New Zealand Cato team, the rebrand of Shell to Z and the global strategy for Kaynemaile, recently announced the most innovative product at the Sydney Design Awards, are two of her most satisfying projects. Other repositioning work has included Refining NZ, NIWA and its online services NIWA Weather and FarmMet, Westpac Stadium membership drive, Wellington Airport brand refresh, The Treasury recruitment, and the launch of The Network for Learning (N4L) and Vocational Pathways to schools. She has been the lead brand strategist for two of the Australian brand projects, and undertakes the workshops and client research to gain insight into the unique requirements of each organisation.
In 2003, Robbie co-founded 4DESIGN with offices in Sydney and Queenstown, New Zealand. 4DESIGN is an industrial design and product development consultancy recognised internationally for its creativity and market-driven approach to design. Robbie and his team believe in a hands-on approach to product development and have extensive in-house prototype facilities, including 3D printing. Clients include Qantas, Dell, Transport for NSW, Hewlett-Packard, Westinghouse, GE, IBM, Microsoft, Atcor Medical, BT Imaging Systems, Sony, XBox, Northrop Grumman and Sunbeam. The Commons is about sustainable urbanisation and a triple bottom line development. The apartments are generous, simple, affordable and sustainable and were designed to add value to the community. The design strategy was to build a vertical community where residents share rooftop gardens, solar hot water, electricity generation systems, roof top laundry, bike parking and communal beehives. The architecture has been a catalyst for bringing together socially responsible individuals who are now striving to give back not only to their neighbours but also to improve their broader community. The Commons was designed to give people a home in the city not a box in the sky.

The New Generation Bendigo Library delivers state of the art library services including community activity and meeting rooms, quiet spaces, cafes, a volunteer resource centre, children’s library and play cubby, gallery spaces to showcase Bendigo’s history and community art projects, upgraded research facilities for the Bendigo Regional Archives Centre, and extensive internet access to augment the community’s capacity for leisure and study activities.
With the impending arrival of a baby, Bill & Tracey’s existing apartment needed a radical rethink for them to resist retreating to the suburbs.

Designed by: Christopher Megowan Design Commissioned by: Private Client The Convertible Courtyards House kinetically adapts to the variable climate found in Melbourne. In response to the north-facing block of land, a central courtyard was created between the weatherboard and modern extension to flood the open kitchen, living and dining area with natural light. A carefully detailed glazed linkway runs along the central courtyard and vertical battens cast a playful cadence of shadows across the floor and walls as one transitions between old and new. A second courtyard straddles the living room to the south and allows access to the rear garden.
A lace-like stair and a mess swallowing floor are just two of the ideas employed to convert this two storey apartment into a family friendly home.
The Burwood Highway Frontage is an eight-level tower connected to a five-level podium building, running between the two main entrances of Deakin University Melbourne Campus, Burwood. With a total gross building area of 17,000m2, the building provides new academic and high level research spaces directed towards accommodating the University’s expanded Faculty of Health.
City of Greater Dandenong New Municipal Building and Civic Square Designed by: Lyons Commissioned by: City of Greater Dandenong The project is part of the State Government’s Revitalising Central Dandenong iniative and features a new civic square for the community, which connects the recently redeveloped station to the newly upgraded Lonsdale Street. The square is a place for community pride and respect and is integrated with a new community library and other shared spaces. The major building within the development is a unique low rise office workplace for over 800 Council staff.
This project for 69 apartments in Altona explores a nexus between the surrounding suburban neighbourhood and denser urban housing development models. The design focuses the resident and visitor experience around a generously landscaped courtyard, offering retreat, recreation and opportunities for social interaction, consciously respecting the amenity of the suburb by maintaining generous setbacks and landscaped frontage to McIntyre Drive.

The Community Hall for Melbourne Now is a flexible multi-use space that creates a bold statement of inclusivity and egalitarianism at the front door of NGV International. Drawing inspiration from the social and cultural spaces of Victorian communities, Community Hall takes tradition to new heights through cutting-edge architecture and dynamic programming. The space offers a hub of activity positioned at the heart of Melbourne Now.
Phoenix Valley is a government funded and operated Theatre, Film and Arts Centre located in Victoria’s sister city, Jiangsu Province in China. It is comprised of four cinemas, a grand theatre, a five storey flexible art gallery, a youth learning centre, a sports and dance hall, a selection of retail, cafe and food facilities and a connected and permeable landscaped courtyard.

Think Ahead is a long term (7+years) exhibition aimed at children 8-12 years-old. It invites visitors to imagine the future, presenting advances in science and technology that affect the way we live, communicate, travel and play. The exhibition has ten interconnected themes – communication, sound, medicine/health, food, natural systems/environments, transport, space, money, daily life, cities – as well a ‘future ideas’ demonstration area. The exhibition inspires visitors to think about how our actions will shape what the future could become. Interactive installations allow visitors to create their own visions of the future, alongside displays of cutting edge science and technical developments.

City of Trees was a temporary exhibition commissioned by the Centenary of Canberra for the National Library of Australia. The design task was to support the sound installations of artist Jyll Bradley by creating a private space for listening and contemplation. The result was a sustainable cardboard structure that not only challenged the preconceptions of cardboard but exceeded them.
Commissioned by the National Gallery of Victoria for the exhibition Melbourne Now, the Design Wall curated by Simone LeAmon and designed by Carter LeAmon presented 40 design projects by 21 Melbourne design studios in an exhibition design of 7H x 1W x 15L metres. Communicating designs relationship to serial manufacturing the projects were presented in multiples with near to 700 objects on display.

Museum Victoria recently completed the redevelopment of Bunjilaka - the Aboriginal Cultural Centre at Melbourne Museum. Building on a solid foundation and a collaborative spirit that Bunjilaka embodies, First Peoples invites visitors to connect with Aboriginal people, culture and history. It contains content that challenges preconceptions, uncovers hidden histories and inspires audiences to learn more. Personal and evocative stories provide emotive experiences that engender pride in the Aboriginal community and create deeper understanding of the Aboriginal experience for a wide audience
Hugh Altschwager is the maker behind Inkster Maken and is a sixth generation farming son from South Australia’s Limestone Coast. It was in his workshop that he turned the land around him into simple, functional items for his home. Influenced by both the Australian environment and his Nordic heritage, Inkster Maken makes use of under-utilised materials to create, with a timeless Northern European design aesthetic. The Hungry Workshop created an identity to reflect his fine craftsmanship that was as simple and functional as the Inkster Maken product.

Confetti were approached to create the branding for Melbourne based interior design team, Spilt Milk. The branding is not reliant on just one logo but instead a range of interchangeable logo variations, all showing the letter ‘I’ spilling in to the ‘L’ in different ways.
Supergraph, a new contemporary art and design fair asked us to develop a strong, industrial and friendly brand identity. Held within the Royal Exhibition Building, Supergraph featured various artist-run stalls, workshops, and both affordable and high-end artworks. We developed custom typography for the logotype, illustrations and a flexible design and signage system based on patterned perforated metals which represented the diversity of the fair and is re-usable for subsequent years. The yellow created a fun and strongly colour coded event which carried through to the responsive website design, various print material and exhibition design.
SWG STUDIO Corporate Identity Revitalisation Designed by: SWG STUDIO Commissioned by: SWG STUDIO SWG Studio needed to invigorate its design studio’s visual identity and branding by using the company’s new graphic orientated stationery to portray its multi-discipline creative design studio. The design idea was to create a defining new bespoke visual identity for their design studio’s new stationery suite through graphic interpretation. The studio sought to retain black and white as the primary colours with a splash of yellow. The business card stock was to be black throughout to display the purity of the colour black when cut.

Although there are numerous banking alternatives to visiting a branch, research revealed that many ANZ customers were still coming in-branch for straightforward banking needs. Deloitte Digital created an interactive multi-channel experience to educate consumers on self-service banking tools. A suite of five brochures, a complementary suite of educational videos and a microsite were designed to educate customers on better ways to bank.

To acknowledge the achievements of this initiative, Lava and headspace created ‘Telling the headspace story’ which is a vivid, inspiring and interactive site that pays tribute to the people who recognised the need for and importance of such a service.
How Far is UP is a children’s book application (app) for audiences aged four and above. It is an interactive storybook designed for iPad use.

Policy Booth partnered with RMIT to design an identity and digital platform to complement their existing energetic and experiential pop-up engagement strategy. With the help of Smartface and Studio Propeller, Policy Booth and RMIT successfully designed and developed a strong brand identity, client facing website, and ePublic; an innovative digital consultation tool. Policy Booth have successfully used these platforms and tools to deliver several engagements, including one for the NGV’s Melbourne Now exhibition.
SWG Studio needed to invigorate their design studio visual identity and branding using the company’s new graphic orientated stationery to portray their multidisciplinary creative design studio. The design idea was to create a defining new bespoke visual identity for the design studio’s new stationery suite through graphic interpretation. The studio retained black and white as the primary colours with a splash of yellow and embraced a holistic approach to revitalise their corporate identity. With an architectural geometrical artwork, the design showcased a strong creative presence that the design studio embodies.
Deloitte worked with the South Australian Tourism Commission to breathe a digital life into their Barossa TVC. In developing the campaign site, the key objective was to provide a way for the visitor to continue their TVC experience online and discover more about the Barossa region, with the ultimate aim objective to drive booking conversions. The end result is a rich, modern experience that emphasises the raw earth elements of the campaign.
By combining fact and fiction, the children’s book app entertains and educates audiences while taking them on a fantastical journey to the outer reaches of the universe. The three characters are curious about distance and space and they embark on a bumbling escapade to outer galaxies.
Designed by: RMIT University Commissioned by: Circus Oz Circus Oz is an internationally recognised innovator in contemporary circus. Their unique performance aesthetic encourages a sense of shared community and carnivalesque participation. The Circus Oz Living Archive was designed to extend its trademark identity in the form of an online archive that utilised digital technology, as a means to perform outside of the limitations of time, space and location. The archive was designed as an online digital platform that would enable Circus Oz to utilise its performance archive to engage its internal and external stakeholders and re-imagine audience participation.

Minbie is a baby bottle teat with revolutionised design functionality. Made of biocompatible soft silicone, it offers a new level of support for continued breastfeeding and for a newborn’s digestion. The design of the teat helps avoid the common problem for mothers and babies while transitioning from breastfeeding to bottle feeding. A unique tapering nipple sits closer to the soft palate to simulate breastfeeding and to assist with latching on by creating a vacuum while feeding and swallowing. Another key feature is the slightly off-centre nipple that offers greater comfort for the baby and a more natural feel during the feeding process.

Amélie Designed by: Rogerseller Commissioned by: Rogerseller Rogerseller introduces Amelie, a contemporary interpretation of the traditional claw-foot bath. It was inspired by the Maidienne, a traditional French chaise lounge which is an asymmetrical daybed with higher headrest and lower footrest. Designed to be a furniture piece, the clean lines and fine edges provide a sense of lightness, while the lounge-like wrap-around head & lumbar support promotes comfort and relaxation. The continuous surface presents seamless contours which flow into the narrow stainless steel legs. Amelie is a unique character that will make a modest statement to the bathroom.

Classical Fingers shows off an elegant and sleek design, complementing the aesthetic and structure of the clarinet and has been designed for ease of use. By attaching two magnetic bands to the clarinet, the guard simply clips into place via magnets.

Falling from heights has already claimed the lives of many Australian workers and left many others seriously injured. The Terrain Master has the potential to change the face of height safety, as it provides safe and sure footing for an extension ladder. It extends the footprint to 3 times its natural base and levels the ladder hence reducing the significant workplace hazards of working on uneven terrain.

Tomcar Australia TM5 Diesel All-Terrain Utility Vehicle Designed by: Tomcar Australia Commissioned by: Tomcar Australia The Tomcar TM5 Diesel is a revolutionary all-terrain vehicle and is an engineering marvel. A rear engined layout puts a majority of the mass over the rear axle which leaves the front to deal with steering and braking duties. The lack of driveshaft at each hub allows greater suspension travel and steering angle. One of its outstanding design features is its rear suspension and drive system, which sends torque to the wheels via chains sealed inside the suspension swing-arms.

Quirkii Paper Products Designed by: Jalapeno Creative Commissioned by: Ausinc An existing range of a product line consisting of paper, transfer and magnets was re-branded to increase sales and aesthetic appeal. As Officeworks has a broad customer base, the design could not be seen to target one demographic in particular. The result has seen a 30% increase on like for like sales with the only change to the products being the packaging, with price and quantity remaining the same.

Virtual Reality Tools for Ergonomic Support Systems Designed by: Swinburne University of Technology Commissioned by: Snugfit Australia Pty Ltd Sleep apnea is a sleeping disorder linked with health problems, and recognised as a major socioeconomic concern nationally. Traditional sleep apnea treatments are invasive and expensive. A comfortable affordable and effective sleep apnea pillow/bed is developed. This research has used virtual reality, to reduce the design cycle and improve effectiveness of ergonomic support systems, particularly sleep apnea. The success of a sleep system, which interacts with humans, depended on the correct posture and inclined level while asleep to improve breathing, comfort and reduce snoring. Smart Blocks Designed by: Huddle Design, Digital Eskimo, Vidiris, Sustainability at Work Commissioned by: Strata Community Australia, City of Melbourne, City of Sydney, Owners Corporation Network Smart Blocks is a national online service helping apartment owners and their managers make energy efficiency changes to the shared property of their buildings. Smart Blocks enables and equips apartment owners and their managers with the right tools and know-how to work together to get an energy efficiency project up and running in their building. The service was co-designed with owners and managers during the design research and prototyping stages and a design-led approach helped create solutions that best support and enable the community and environment.

Loctag Designed by: Loctag Environmental Services Commissioned by: Loctag Environmental Services Loctag (short for location tag) is an RFID tag designed to contain and collect vital information requested or required by field crews within water waste utility services e.g. Councils, Water Authorities, and Government Departments that control or maintain sewer or storm water systems. Information can be accessed in less than one minute at all times and thus reduce time, cost and resources and environmental damage when water systems overflow from storm water and sewage.
