GOODFORTUNE FASHION

Bag a Bargain Savvy shoppers share their insider tips for making the most of the sale season.

Bulk buy opaque tights. They’re small enough to store and they always come in handy for the following winter. Ditto for good quality v-neck jumpers, t-shirts and ballet pumps.

Invest in next season’s trends. The 2012 runways were awash with structured suits and ruffled dresses in fragile, oceanic colours. So, look for pieces in oyster, pale blue and sea foam-white in either chiffon, lace and laser cut leather

Buy the best you can afford. Step away from heavily discounted, high street ‘tat’ and invest in a designer number that would normally be out of your price range. The idea is to buy something that’s classic, fits well and will pass the test of time. Be strategic. Know what you want before the discounts begin.

Buy simple shapes in cashmere, black, cream or camel. The discounts may not be huge but you’ll rarely go wrong with the classics.

6

Be in the know. When it comes to your favourite store, sign up to their newsletter, follow them on twitter and be friendly to the sales staff. That way, you’ll get sale previews, 70% alerts and year long discounts. Savour the experience. I make sales shopping a luxe event rather than a desperate, stressful dash around the shops. Pick a city and book a hotel with a spa - then indulge! Take the stress out of the sales season - book a personal shopper. They’ll risk all the elbow jabbing to get your size. Plus, they’ll reserve you a fitting room. Most department stores and some outlets offer this service for free, so make sure you book in advance.

Bygone Beauty Penny Fray shows you how to get groomed and glamorous for the party season. You tried it once, hoping to channel Marilyn or Greta. Unfortunately, you ended up looking more drag than fab. We are of course talking about old school glamour. Some say it’s a matter of attitude but we say it’s all about vamping it up 21st century style. We loved the decadence and drama of Louis Vuitton’s runway look as well as the mystery of Chanel in the Fall. So forget about the less is more approach - this fashion forward look means breaking the ultimate beauty rule by wearing smoky eyes with dramatic lips. Just keep skin fresh and flawless with the sheerest of coverage. And unless you look ghostly without it - forgo the blusher. Eyebrows need to be groomed and arched before sweeping a metallic shadow across the lid. If you’re feeling brave, continue to layer colour to intensify the look. Blend well before adding eyeliner along both the upper and lower lash

We Heart... Ruby Hammer Glamorous Eyes, £15, Debenhams The fear is mounting. The whole office will be there. And you’re expected to look glamorous within five minutes of leaving your desk. That’s why this idiot proof set by professional make up artist Ruby Hammer is a God send. Some of the colours may be a little outlandish, granted. But I defy anyone not to feel like a kid again painting their doll’s face with crayons. Only this time you’re in expert hands.

lines. You need a steady hand, so go slowly. Better still, buy a precision pen. If you prefer a softer, smokier effect, smudge the line somewhere between the liner and shadow. For staying power, use a liner brush to sweep a layer of shadow over the liner. Next, apply a single coat of black mascara. You don’t want to overdo it. For added intrigue you could always wear a lace eye-mask a la Chanel A/ W 2011. Lips need to look kissable, so apply a deep berry lipstick straight from the tube before finishing with a slash of matching gloss. If this seems a bit too dramatic for your taste, you could always wear a natural lip instead. Nail wise - forget last season’s fluorescent shades. Instead, wear a barely there beige or subtle metallic shade with a statement ring. And there you have it - the ultimate festive look.

Holiday Hair Say goodbye to drab, dull hair and hello to catwalk creations that you can recreate at home.

Model wears blouse from New Look

The Elegant Knot: Chic and polished - this is the perfect day to night style. Simply split your hair into a neat side parting. Then tuck the rest behind your ears before brushing into a smooth ponytail that sits at the nape of the neck. Twist until tight and wrap around its base. Finally pin until the knot is securely held. Use a little grooming cream to keep the style sleek. This style can be quickly glammed up for night with a sparkling clip or decorative, feather headband.

Baby it’s cold outside. Save yourselves from an onslaught of hat induced messes with the following DIY styles: Luxe Waves: To get the best results - start with the basics of freshly washed hair. If your hair is fine, use a volume boosting shampoo and conditioner. Then, with a diffuser hair dryer, gently dry your hair and brush through. Divide locks into sections as thick as your tongs. The bigger the sections, the looser the curl will be. Before tonging the hair, twist into one direction and tong in the opposite direction. Softly brush the curls using a natural bristle brush and finish by spraying with Trevor Sorbie’s Beautiful Volume Hairspray for maximum hold.

Coming Clean

Festive frolics can leave your health bank account in the red. Get back into shape with our easy detox tips. What do 50 mince pies, 10 bottles of champagne and Santa’s beard have in common? You ate it all last week (- the beard due to a drunken dare.) Fortunately, Maria Jevtic, author of DIY Health Guide’ can cure you of your festive food faux pas. She says: “Your body works like a bank account. Just as with money, you can pay in and you can take out. The way to stay in credit is to pay in more than you take out. So to get ready for all the partying which goes on over Christmas and New Year, it is important to get your mind and body in credit now. As we all know the holidays can be a very taxing time of year.”

1. Gym Will Fix It For You It is important to keep up your exercise routine even in the colder and rainier

13

weather. This will do wonders for your mood, self-image and general well-being. Every time you exercise, you reduce your stress levels. This is because stress hormones can only efficiently be broken down during exercise. If you do not exercise, these hormones keep circulating in your body inducing feelings of anxiety long after it has been initially triggered. When you exercise you also pay in bonus points towards a faster metabolism, lower blood sugar and improved cholesterol scores. Just in time for the Christmas period when all three of these areas are likely to become rather overtaxed. If you exercise regularly now, taking a few days break over the holidays will not do you any harm. 2. Hibernate For Happiness

Get healthy with greens.

4. Hydrate To Feel Great Our bodies are around 80% water. Water is a prerequisite of staying healthy, and we need to consume enough to stay hydrated. Coffee, tea and alcohol as well as fizzy drinks (stimulants) are all dehydrating and should be exchanged for good quality bottled water. Or even better, invest in a good quality water filter.

5. A Sweet Alternative We are all told to eat more fresh fruit and vegetables, but this is even more important at this time of year. So if you feel like something sweet, choose some lovely satsumas or fresh grapes in season, and leave the treats for Christmas. Fresh fruit and vegetables are full of bug-fighting vitamins and antioxidants which will help you stay in good health. This is a great way to ensure your body stays in credit, and will mean a more relaxed diet over the holidays will not do too much damage. The darker months naturally make us more inclined to turn in early. This is because, to some extent, our bodies rely on daylight intensity to feel awake. Use this feature wisely and build up your sleep credit now, instead of keeping yourself up artificially just because you feel silly going to bed early. Every hour of sleep before midnight brings immense antiaging benefits to every single cell in your body. This is because the most intense maintenance is carried out during sleep. People who sleep more, also have fewer infections, have more energy and generally feel in a better mood.

6. Booze Less. An overworked liver will make you feel illtempered and sluggish. In addition, alcohol robs your body of valuable nutrients such as magnesium, zinc and the B-vitamin group. These are hard to replace and might tip your health bank account off balance which will increase the risk of winter infections.

7. Slow Down, You Move To Fast Avoid racing around as much as you can, and try to spend more time at home - every weekend if possible. This will allow you to unwind and your 3. Ornaments from B&Q

GOODFORTUNE HOME

Tree’s a Company Turn your Christmas tree into a decorative masterpiece with these trendy tips. Wearing naff mittens, watching Mary Poppins and getting sozzled on sherry trifles - you’re a sucker for Christmas traditions. Except when it comes to decorating the tree. Step away from the prickly roadkill and reject all glitter strewn offerings from anyone under the age of 18. It’s time to channel your favourite interior designer. The first step? Choose a theme or colour scheme. If you want to be trendy rather than traditional, consider embracing bright colours and eclectic ornaments. I personally love the idea of an Alice in Wonderland tree, with white rabbits, pocket watches, tea pots and little potion bottles. B&Q have an amazing selection of fairytale ornaments.

15

Lights, of course, should go on the tree first. For a designer look, use either clear or white bulbs, making sure they are evenly distributed on all the branches. Tree toppers should be a talking point, so consider visiting Christmas boutiques, galleries or even craft fairs for a statement piece. Finally, for extra designer flair, wrap your presents in hues that match your Christmas tree's colour scheme. Okay, if you’re hyperventilating with panic by this point, consider throwing a tree party, encouraging friends and family to hang ornaments in return for Christmas cocktails. Just make sure they’ve done the decorating before they start drinking.

Chocolate gifts from John Lewis

Method

Ingredients • 100gms of good quality dark, milk or white chocolate • Dried chili flakes, gold leaf, nuts or salt crystals • Cellophane and ribbon if you’re presenting them as gifts.

•Roughly break the chocolate and place in a heatproof bowl set over a saucepan of boiling water. Allow the chocolate to melt slowly in the bowl, stirring from time to time. Don’t let the mixture burn. •Line a baking tin with parchment paper. Then, carefully drop a tablespoon of liquid chocolate on the paper to form a disc. Alternate, white, milk and dark chocolate for variety. If you want to be more creative, you could pour a thin layer into Christmas shaped cookie cutters or create fun faces. • Allow to semi-set before adding your topping of choice. I personally love the combination of dark chocolate with chili or white chocolate with gold leaf. • Once cool, wrap in cellophane and tie with a ribbon or handwritten tag for gifts.

GOODFORTUNE TRAVEL

Road Hog Julie Evans’ big biker adventure offered five birthdays, one wedding and a wealth of memories. She shares her joys of travelling through America’s Deep South with Penny Fray. Imagine the sun on your face, the wind in your hair and 500 pounds of steel and chrome between your legs. Only one thing left to do – celebrate. Mind out of the gutter please - we’re talking about bikes and birthdays. A posse of road hogs have just toured several southern American states on Harley Davidsons to mark five 50th birthdays and a wedding. The 13-strong group travelled through iconic places like Nashville, Lynchburg and Memphis on the iconic motorbikes. “It was fabulous,” says Julie Evans, 48, from North Wales. “My partner Nick, and five of his friends are 50 this year, so we decided to take the trip of a lifetime. We flew into Nashville, where we picked up our Harley Davidson bikes and did a 1800 mile tour of the States taking in Memphis, Savannah, Lynchburg, Chattanooga and the Smoky Mountains, to name a few.” Julie, who is used to riding a zippy Kawasaki bike around the Welsh coast, had never ridden a Harley before, so the experience was a dream come true. “We’ve been riding bikes since we were teenagers,” says Julie. “And Harley Davidsons are the coolest things on the planet - when you start those bikes en mass, they sound like a streak of growling Tigers. “Anyone who rides a bike dreams of doing an American trip. It’s a bit Easy Rider. Even those who don’t ride bikes

think it’s an opportunity of a lifetime.” Her 75-year-old father is even eager to join them the next time they go. “He’s pretty determined,” laughs the lively PA. Despite visiting Graceland and celebrating several birthdays in style, the highlight of the two week trip was driving through rural Tennessee. “It’s a Bible belt area and nearly every other building is a church of one denomination or other but they all have messages outside,” says the former travel

rep. “One of my favourite was ‘If you think it’s hot here, you should wait until you get to hell’. And it was hot. It was 102 degrees with about 80% humidity, so it was a warm drive but the scenery was fantastic. The Smoky Mountain’s stunning roads offered a wealth of creeks, rivers and wildlife. It was amazing. We even rode the Dragon’s Tail, which is a world famous biker road, featuring 318 bends in just 11 miles.” Adding to the celebratory nature of the trip, two of the party – Chris Rice and Sarah Back - got married. Chris, who suffers from spina bifida, said the couple wanted it to be a quiet but special affair. “On the day of the wedding, all the ladies went to the local salon. It was like a scene from the film Steel Magnolias,” adds Julie. “We had lovely ladies called Misty and Cindy, whose husbands were called Chip and Rhett, doing our manicures

and pedicures, while the men were decorating our lodge in red, white and blue American regalia. It was a surprise. The bride and groom knew nothing about it. And at 4 o’clock, the eccentric pastor, who was called Willie Champoux (pronounced shampoo), turned up. The service was lovely, with a backdrop of the Smoky Mountains. Afterwards, we celebrated with a champagne toast and cupcakes before getting on our bikes in our full finery. People were agog because we had tin cans trailing behind us.” With her own 50th birthday looming on the horizon, Julie, who works at David Ormerod Hearing Centres, is already planning her next big biker adventure. “The most fantastic trip would be to do the Big Sur, down the Californian coast,” she concludes.
