Fashion Finds For Autumn Animal Magic

Halloween Special 1

GOODFORTUNE WELCOME

Page 17: The Magic of South Africa

Welcome

Autumn is a great time for all things crack, sizzle and pop. For starters, there’s the joy of buying new clothes for the colder weather. Then, after all the trick’n’treating of Halloween, comes a holy day to celebrate every saint. Next up is bonfire night. And while burning an effigy seems a rather gruesome idea, there’s a lot to be said about cashmere mittens, sparklers and baked apples. Finally, there’s the start of the preChristmas frenzy. The wrapping paper is already out, now all you need is the presents. Which means....yippee...more shopping. So go on, wave goodbye to summer and be grateful for the season of mists and mellow fruitfulness. Penny x p.s. Do you have any news or views for the next edition? Don’t forget to tweet me @PFray.

The easiest way to get the look on the high street is with a green or brown army jacket, which will act as an instant wardrobe updater - Primark and Internaçionale’s versions are both worth checking out. For a more grown up look, head for Hobbs. If it’s tough lace-up boots you’re after, try Bertie or River Island. River Island also has a great selection of embellished military-style caps, as do Marks & Spencer and Accessorize. The beauty of this trend is that it can be worked in so many different ways. Try it!

For the past decade or so it seems that the military look has been the eternal autumn/winter trend, both on the catwalk and on the high street. Luckily for devotees who love the functionality of army pieces but still want their look to have a new-season edge, the style has finally been given a new spin. This season, it’s all about the khaki army surplus vibe, adding a masculine edge with leather details and caps. For wearability, look for ways to tone down the full-on army look. Heavy lace-up boots, a khaki army surplus-style jacket and a cap are all great pieces on their own, but never all at once. The aim is to look slightly tough and very chic not to channel a Soviet-era sergeant major (or a certain ex-WAG pop-star.) Victoria Beckham’s runway was a masterclass in rocking the army vibe with tough accessories (wrap-around leather belts, long boots and caps), but keeping the silhouette ultra-feminine with fitted midi dresses. Burberry also toned down the full-on military look by combining subtle army-

Times are tough, so we’re spending less at the salon. Penny Fray investigates the art of DIY dyeing. We’re facing a double dip recession, and in such depressing economic times it’s time to skip the salon. And why not? With the average home colouring kit costing around £5 compared to a minimum spend of £50 at the salon, dyeing-it-yourself is becoming an increasingly attractive option. Sales of home colourants are on the rise with more than eight million women now treating their hair at home. “I used to spend more than £100 a month on highlights,” reveals one yummy mummy from Cheshire. “But since every day costs have gone up and the kids’ school fees are seriously cutting into our household budget, having my hair professionally coloured every six weeks seems a bit selfish.” While a new generation of colourants have improved greatly to minimise major DIY disasters - a little caution is still necessary. “Hair colouring kits have been getting better and better, although the user will never be sure whether they’re getting the correct shade for their hair when buying off the shelf,” says expert Brent Mossop. “We only advise that you lift or darken your hair up to two shades. Any more than this and a colourist would have to potentially react to the colour during the colouring process by adding different tones to the hair. It's not always the case but it’s better to be safe during the home hair colouring process.” The other rules of doing it yourself is to do a strand test and always follow the

instructions on the box. Never use home colourants to highlight. “Applying foil is a skill in itself,” explains Brent. “High-lift tinting is possible though and it would be a hell of a lot cheaper with the same products you get in high end salons with the same result. “We’ve just launched YourColour, a new home colouring system that puts you in touch with one of our professional colourists using free videoing calling via Skype or Face Time. That way, we can see you and advise on colour, tone and application. We then mix the colour by hand, especially for you, and post it anywhere in the UK. We believe it’s the closest you’ll get to salon results.” The whole service costs just £18.80 and is available via www.your-colour.com. Alternatively, consider visiting a local training college or salon. There, you’re guaranteed to get a professional look for up to 75% less than you’d pay a qualified colourist. You just need to be patient and trust that the tutor is keeping an eye on the trainee for potential mistakes.

GOODFORTUNE HALLOWEEN

Angel School

Celebrity psychic Donna Robinson explores the healing power and serenity of contacting your angel guide.

This Halloween, forget about all things ghoulish and embrace the goodness of angels instead. Studies and statistics show that more and more people are turning to the spirit world for guidance. And no wonder angels are amazing creatures. They come to us in various guises, offering advice that is both practical and uplifting.

Now, I know some of you will be raising an eyebrow in incredulity and asking for evidence. There is none - not scientifically speaking anyway. Angels have no reason to prove themselves - but many people, including myself, have tuned into their energy, felt their love and listened to their guidance. This is not an exclusive gift. If you want to invoke your own guardian angel, all you need to do is ask. After all, we all have a guide, offering us loving support from birth until death. To contact yours, try meditation, prayer or practice a form of clairaudience where you relax, ask your question out loud and channel the answer in your head. It takes a bit of practice, that’s why I’ve set up a series of spiritual empowerment programmes. They’ll help you work with your energy to connect to the spirit world . They run for six weeks and the first one will take place at Thornton Hall Hotel in Thornton Hough, Wirral on November 1, 2012. Call 0844 683 0245 for details.

Michael was first seen as a healing angel, and then over time, as a protector and the leader of God’s army against evil. Call on him when you need strength, protection and truth. It helps to visualise his sword as a living flame.

In Judeo-Christian tradition, Raphael performs all manners of healing. He is also said to be the guardian of the tree of life. Ask for his help when you need energy, knowledge or guidance. A clear quartz will help your harness clarity of mind.

GOODFORTUNE HALLOWEEN

Spooktastic From Halloween hauntings to things that go bump in the night - ghost hunter Wayne Spurrier shares his work with Louise Parker. What made you decide to become a ghost hunter? I received a ghost hunt as a Christmas gift. A few things happened on the event which I just couldn’t explain and it re-ignited my need to know more about the subject. I was left with a burning desire to visit more places and gain more experiences. Describe what happens on a typical ‘Haunted Happenings’ overnight ghost hunt? Throughout the night we work in small groups and explore the whole building, carrying out séances and vigils in the most active areas and using many different types of equipment including EMF meters and dowsing rods. Ultimately, what are you looking for at each event? The Haunted Happenings team are not there to change anybody's beliefs or opinions, but simply to facilitate the ghost hunt and offer our experience in encouraging activity to happen. Naturally, we would all love for an apparition of Elizabeth I or Henry VIII to make an appearance but we are just grateful for whatever the spirits can do during our time at a location. So is spiritual activity guaranteed at every event? The locations which we visit all have a fantastic reputation for ghostly activity and sightings so we rarely find ourselves without an experience to tell others about over a coffee break.

What is the scariest encounter you’ve ever had whilst doing a ghost hunt? It was in the cellars at Woodchester Mansion. Standing alone in a long, dark corridor, I became aware of the crunch of gravel about ten feet away from me. As I listened I heard another which appeared closer and then another which was even closer still. The only way I can describe the sound is as if somone was creeping up on me. And I have to admit that I reached for my torch and made a hasty retreat for the door (only to hear a bang on the wooden stairs just behind me on the way up). What are Haunted Happenings planning for Halloween? We have more than 20 public Ghost Hunts running over Halloween and we are visiting some of the UKs most haunted and infamous locations. From the dark, foreboding crypt and cells of Oxford Castle, to the cellars and haunted bedrooms of the Station Hotel, we are bringing our guests the very best locations on the spookiest weekend of the year. For more information, see www.hauntedhappenings.co.uk And finally, what do you say to all the skeptics out there? We really do welcome people on to our events who are very skeptical about the paranormal because it helps offer a real balance to the night. All I ever ask is that they spend their time at the event with an open mind and trying everything possible to prove themselves wrong, rather than right.

GOODFORTUNE TRAVEL

Animal Magic With its huge wildlife sanctuary and glut of luxury lodges, South Africa is the ideal place to see the Big Five, says Penny Fray. Each morning and afternoon, we went on a kidney jarring jeep ride into the bush. We drove up and down hills, weaved through bushes and dodged dense spider webs in search of the elusive lion. I say elusive, since the wet weather had made the big cats shy. Then, just as dusk fell and our driver decided to head for home, excited whispers came from the back. Could it be? No. Yes. Lions. A pair of them. One white, one brown. Hungry - and HUGE. And there was I, sitting in an open vehicle, just a few feet away from one of the most powerful creatures on the planet. Just one swipe of the paw and I would have been vulture fodder. Yet, there is and never will be, a thrill quite like seeing a wild animal in its natural habitat. Indeed, some of the world’s best game viewing can be found in South Africa. A comfortable (and safe) way to get closer to nature is to book in at a private game park. Several of these operate in the bush-veld along the border of Kruger Park - the country’s largest wildlife sanctuary. We stayed at Elandela, a luxury lodge which offered sumptuous rooms, impressive facilities and a wide range of wild animals, including white lions, leopards, zebra, giraffes and rhinoceros. Food, transport and expert rangers were included in the reasonable price as well as a guided tour of Kruger, which is almost the same size as Israel. Despite its hugeness, the park is remarkably well organised with a good network of roads, toilets, camps and shops - but the trip was definitely enhanced by having a guide. Ours, Karina, had trained at Kruger, and knew all the best places to see the animals. In fact, we were

amazed by her ability to spot camouflaged crocs and flying monkeys at eye squinting distances, before whizzing off in the Land Cruiser to find the best photographic angle. Back at Elendela, the young ranger took turns with her colleague Coleman, in tracking rare, white lions. They’re beautiful creatures - but as previously stated - pretty scary. Fortunately, the canny cats know not to take on the 4x4s - even ones bereft of windows. I loved the freedom of spotting zebras or hippos without the hinderance of a zoo’s metal bar or fence. And - if I’m honest - a little fear just added to the adventure. But the best bit was learning all about the native customs and languages of the people. Poor Coleman had more questions fired at him than a Mastermind contestant, all of which he handled with aplomb. If you’re not a morning person, then you’ll probably grumble at the 6am alarm call that necessitates some of these wild sightings. Luckily,

Elendela has a breeding programme for white lions.

18

what gentle creatures they are and how cruelly they meet their end - shot, hit and hacked until time releases them from their suffering. And all for what? Material that is as medically effective as your finger nails. Tragic. Anyway, even if you’re not into wild animals - or their causes, the Mpumalanga region, offers heart thumping vistas of mountains, valleys, rivers and waterfalls. Of particular interest is the Blyde River Canyon, which has some of the deepest precipitous cliffs of any canyon on the planet. Part of the aptly named Panorama route, it starts at the town of Graskop and includes God’s Window, the Pinnacle and Bourke’s Luck Potholes. Day trips can be booked from your lodge - but they can be expensive. This is an amazing country, made all the more beautiful by the friendliness of the people. If you love animals, culture and photography, you must go. Feeding time for Roccy and Clova.

in between outings, the lodge cosseted us with attentive service and fabulous food. In fact, there were so many delicious courses at every sitting that gaining weight was an inevitability. But boy, it was worth it when you’re sitting by a large camp fire, staring up at a star studded sky, scoffing Impala sausage to the music of mating hippos. Guests at Elandela, as well as been given the opportunity to chat with the resident parrot Sexy, are also given a chance to meet Roccy, a baby rhino left orphaned by poachers last year. The celebrity calf was saved by Yvonne and Rocco Gioia, the lodge’s welcoming owners, after he was left blinded following a brutal attack on his mother. He and his companion certainly had the ‘awwww’ factor as they suckled their milk bottles with squeals of delight. The death of Roccy’s mother follows a surge in poaching, driven by demand for rhino horn on the black market. Despite various security measures, more than 300 rhinos have already been killed this year by armed gangs. It’s heartbreaking stuff, especially when you see

We also look after the Super Lambanana and co-own the record label Cavern Records which signed the fantastic band The Mono LPs. Describe yourself in three words: Creative, determined and ethical. Why do you do what you do? I love specializing in contractual and intellectual property law. It is a privilege to be in a position to work with intelligent and inventive people, helping them succeed with their businesses and sorting out their problems. Work philosophy: Don’t be too easily influenced by compliments or criticism. Be grateful for the help of others and make sure they know how genuinely thankful you are.

Highlights: Getting all the compliments from music industry specialists on our download package Start Your Own Record Label. It is great to have it confirmed from people you respect to say you have done something worthwhile. Worst moment: Being late for a meeting with a new client, running into their building, standing on freshly laid cement whilst workmen watched in disbelief. Then spending an hour having a meeting with a ‘Steve’ whilst Steve (the new client) who I should have been meeting with, was in an office upstairs calling my boss. Also being electrocuted on stage and being chased by cows (not business related). Best business advice: Anyone can have an idea but few can put it into action. Who you’d like to connect with?
