What’s In A Name? We find the best pieces from this season’s cream of the collaboration crop. By Maddy McIndoe and Penny Fray. Of course, celebrity collaborations are often even more anticipated than the high-end designers. Madonna has just launched her Truth or Dare shoe collection at Selfridges and rumours are abound of Rihanna working with River Island. For high fashion uniqueness, however, we’re all of a flutter for Japanese Vogue Fashion Director Anna Dello Russo’s collection of accessories for H&M (out early October.) An idol of the blogosphere whose flamboyant outfits are endlessly documented by style photographers, we can expect flamboyant jewellery, bags and shoes. The limited edition nature of these collaborations means that, unfortunately, it can be difficult to get hold of even the less popular items, let alone the key pieces. For this reason, it is advisable to check with stores to find out when they receive delivery of the items. It may sound extreme, but will avoid disappointment. The plus side is knowing you have paid a fraction of the usual price for your favourite designer.

Orla Kiely for People Tree dress - £95

Collaborations between high-end designers and high-street brands are nothing new. In fact, we barely even bat an eyelid anymore at the throngs of fans camping outside stores at 5am to get the first look-in. Marni for H&M and Preen for Debenhams were perhaps the most hyped-up collections yet. But do they really live up to the media attention they receive? When it comes to paying a premium price for what is, essentially, a high-street manufactured piece, versatility is key. This Vanessa Bruno vest dress for La Redoute (opposite) has it all - an on trend colour, a flattering fit and the perfect mix of sexiness and laid-back cool. People Tree, the fair trade fashion pioneer, has just teamed up with Zakee Shariff and Orla Kiely this season. Both offerings are characterised by each designers’ signature prints. Zakee Shariff’s designs feature delicate, illustrative prints with a smattering of paisley whilst Orlia Kiely’s adopts a bolder look.

Body Blips You’ve changed your diet and upped the exercise, so why aren’t you losing weight in time for your holiday? You’ve spent the last couple of weeks nibbling lettuce leaves, pounding pavements and drinking more water than the average mermaid. So, why are you still looking more beach ball than Brazilian supermodel? Before you punch the next person who accuses you of eating too much and moving too little, consider this - there’s more to weight loss than just counting calories and hitting the gym. Scientists confirm what ordinary women have known for ages - that life’s just not fair. Yup, much of your dieting success lies in genetics and lifestyle. You may have a slow metabolism, some dodgy appetite hormones and a bucket load of stress stopping you from squeezing into that size ten swimsuit - despite sticking to the bunny diet. But that doesn’t mean you should sling your health halo and and dive into a vat of chocolate. Far from it. You just have to work a little harder and be a lot more patient.

The trouble with losing weight in time for your holiday is that your body tries to pack it back on by increasing your appetite. Temper the effects by shedding the pounds slowly over months rather than days. Also, for a flatter tummy, its essential to look at the foods you’re eating. Stop scoffing so much sugar and starchy carbohydrates like bread, rice, potatoes and pasta. Eat only what’s recommended for a healthy diet. You can find out more about this on www.nhs.uk/livewell/healthy-eating. Sleep deprivation and stress can also increase your appetite, so make sure you have at least eight hours of quality kip and take up yoga or meditation. Finally, don’t forget to move more. Exercise raises your metabolism, so make sure you walk, run, swim or do weights for at least 30 minutes every day. The gym is optional.

Tried & Tested Burt’s Bees Very Volumising Pomegranate Shampoo, £9.99. This gentle shampoo easily rinses and adds super shine while leaving your hair feeling thicker and looking oh-so fuller. Formulated with antioxidant-rich Pomegranate Seed Oil and Jojoba Protein, a natural moisturiser, it’s a highly nourishing shampoo. Verdict: Okay, I’ll ‘fess up - I’m a bit of a Burt’s Bees beauty fiend but really, this stuff smells AMAZING. Plus, it does a great job in giving my fine, coloured hair some extra bounce. I never wash my hair without adding conditioner, so I was pleased that there were matching products in the range. Oh, and the big bottle earns an extra point. Rating: 8.5/10

Brow - Wow!

Can the catwalk trend for statement brows work in real life? Penny Fray and Emily Thompson battle it out. Sporting a pair of strong brows will earn you some serious beauty stripes this season. Big, bold and reminiscent of Liz Taylor in her hey day - the so called ‘Scouse brow’ has been seen on everyone from catwalk models to WAGs. And now they’re even highlighting the wearer’s regional identity. Sara Stern, Beauty Director at Debenhams says: “The number of women adopting signature brow styles for the region that they live in is so high that it’s like having a brow-o-meter - you can instantly guess what area they are from.” According to Stern, the Scouse brow may still be hugely popular in the north but southerners have their own interpretation. “Instead of the brutal Scouse brow which is a heavily defined, dark, square and thick pencilled eyebrow, Londoners have created their own trend, the ‘South brow’. Still opting for big brows but going for a more natural look,” she says. The South brow trend has been adopted by Lauren Goodger, Amy Childs and Tamara Ecclestone. Great for highly groomed celebrities - but can a bigger brow work for the rest of us? “The statement brow can be a tricky trend to pull off,” admits Carol Fenon, a beauty therapist at Chique in Moreton, Wirral. “Ideally, you need a bold personality, strong features and the right colouring for it to look good. If you’re a pale, fine featured blonde, for example, it’s probably best to stick to a more natural look.”

But if you’re brave enough to try it, simply thread or wax your brows within a millimeter of their lives before painting them back on with a stencil kit and dark pencil. Even better - consult a professional Against: The Scouse brow is the most terrifying beauty trend to hit the highstreet since the vajazzle. Done badly - they look like two inky caterpillars resting above the eyes, so needless to say, I won’t be trying it. Why? Well, I’m neither a D-list celebrity or a young WAG wannabe - but most of all, I have better things to do with my spare time than spending most of it maintaining my brows, spray tanning my face and wearing more false lashes than the average female impersonator. In short, it sounds far too high maintenance for my liking. Besides, fashion is a fickle mistress and come S/S 2013 it'll probably be all about the lips - and the statement brow will be relegated into beauty's ‘Room 101’ For: I am a firm believer that eye brow maintenance is an essential part of any beauty regime. It’s not just fashion for fashion’s sake - a tidy, perfectly defined brow can frame the face and emphasise the eyes. Big, beautiful brows have not only become a hit with Scousers but the trend is spreading across the UK – even Kate Middleton has been spotted sporting the thicker brow. And if it’s good enough for the Duchess of Cambridge, it’s good enough for the rest of us.

It’s the one thing I was always good at and have always enjoyed the most. Which actor inspires you? GOODFORTUNE REVIEW

Casino Royale

Roll the dice and live large - Penny Fray tries New Brighton’s waterfront casino. If you can drag yourself away from the roulette wheel, there is plenty to see and do in New Brighton’s Grosvenor G Casino. There are live weekend performances, video games, blackjack classes and colourful cocktails - but best of all, there is fabulous food. Follow the neon trail to The Gallery Restaurant and say ‘hello’ to a menu packed with everything from scrumptious seafood to gourmet burgers. Okay, so the decor is a bit reminiscent of hotel dining with its dark woods, citrus accents and garish food screens. But on the plus side, it offers seclusion, 24/7 service and no screaming kids. Being an over 18s venue, you do have to flash your passport and fill in a membership form at reception. It’s a bit of a hassle but once you’re in, there’s little to hold you back from having a fabulous, fun filled time. G Casino is more upmarket and better value than your average Vegas venue. The attention to detail is evident at every turn - the open plan room is easy to navigate, the staff are super friendly and the atmosphere isn’t at all intimidating. Even the toilets are worth talking about with their quirky graphics. Of course, you don’t have to gamble - and on the evening we visited - plenty of guests were making the most of the free FIFA screen and glitzy bar. But if you want to have a flutter, you’ll find everything from slot machines and gaming tables to a poker room and gold area for high rollers.

If you’re a gambling virgin like me, though, head for the mock gaming area. There, a jolly customer advisor will give you the lowdown on various games and let you practice with pretend chips. Apparently it’s a popular form of corporate entertainment, especially since the casino also caters for business conferences. Ask nicely and, if it’s convenient, they’ll even hold your hand while you playing a real hand at one of the tables. This isn’t what I expected from a casino. It was more like a private member’s club than a den of money grabbing iniquity so I’ll definitely be going back. The 30 Second Lowdown G Casino, 18 Marine Point, New Brighton, Wirral. CH45 2PB. Imaginatively displayed blooms are the ultimate decorating accessory this summer, discovers Penny Fray. Sigh. Summer’s fading. Like, fast. Which means al fresco entertaining is out of the question and you’re not quite ready to redecorate your home for guests - no matter how delightful they are. How to freshen up a raggedy room - fast? Flowers, naturally. Or maybe not so naturally. Faux flowers have come a long way since the plastic monstrosities of the seventies. Moreover, they’re great for decorating because they won’t wilt. Silk bouquets are best because they look realistic and can easily accent a fresh arrangement.

Base your selection on colours, shapes and textures that compliment each other. Experiment with a balance of tall and short, full foliage and simple stems - or simply bunch one type of flower in a dramatic bouquet. Roses or peonies always look sophisticated, especially when displayed in a retro jug. Alternatively, consider displaying leaves in unusual containers. From giant monstera leaves to slender flax, foliage lasts longer and looks more modern than flowers.

Top Tips • Fill tiny sweet tins and vintage tea cups with delicate flowers. • There are an amazing range of silk flowers, ribbons and unique finishing touches at VV Rouleaux. • Not feeling very creative? Don’t worry most department stores like Debenhams and John Lewis have ready made arrangements for around £20.

Anyone Out There? Tarots and mediums may once have been dismissed as a load of mumbo jumbo, so why do smart women still believe in them? Penny Fray finds out more about the power of the paranormal. Psychics, apparently, are the new therapists. But it’s not just celebrities and women who wear crystals and smell of incense who are going intelligent, young professionals are also consulting paranormal guides in their droves. According to a Readers Digest survey, more than half of us now believe in powers such as premonitions and mind reading, while another poll showed one in seven people having consulted a medium, psychic or fortune teller in the past four years. “I think people are turning to psychics because they’re impatient for answers and reassurance especially in tough times,” says Arianrhod, a tarot reader at The House of Good Fortune. “Our gift is to give them some clarity - so when they finish a session, they feel more optimistic and focused.” The fact there is no hard or unequivocal evidence to back up the claims of psychics or mediums doesn’t matter to most of their clients. “They help me put life decisions into perspective,” says one thirty-something executive from Manchester. Another claims it’s a form of counseling. The stigma of seeing a medium, psychic or astrologer, it seems, is fast disappearing. And where there’s a need, there’s a market. There are now ‘mind, body & spirit’ stores and fairs in most high-streets. Selfridges has a psychic booth and whole television programmes and channels are dedicated to the paranormal. To find out more about the paranormal, I consult Wirral’s answer to Psychic Sally - Donna Robinson. The clairvoyant hosts a series of TV

and live shows and is now a new columnist for Good Fortune Magazine. How did you first discover your gift? I was nine years old and the first spirit I saw was my grandfather who had just passed away. I could describe him in accurate detail to my parents and recited information only known to elder relatives at the time. I continued on with a connection to the spirit world into adult life while trying to work in an ordinary job - but the interference from the spirit world got so much that I had to work full time as a medium and clairvoyant. For instance, I would be delivering a power point presentation to a room full of business people and all of a sudden I would see a spirit standing next to a delegate in the room. This, as you can imagine, pushed all thoughts of business out of my head. But I must say I really love what I do and how it helps so many people. What, in your view, happens to someone when they die? From my experience, spanning over many years, when you die your physical body will remain here on earth but your soul or spirit will transcend over to your loved ones on the other side. Also, depending on how you die, you would go to a what most mediums refer to as a ‘viewing room of your life on earth’. You would be there temporarily with a loved one looking at your life path and working through what has happened at the end. As a spirit you are given free will to choose in the spirit world as you are here on

18

earth. Once you have worked through your physical life and accepted this, you are then released free of all the issues and problems that you may have encountered with your life here on earth. Ultimately, you will be happy and at peace, ready to watch over your loved ones still here on earth today. Why do you think psychic sessions have become so popular? We live in a materialistic, high pressure world, striving for success in both our business and private lives. This pressure leads to anxiety that makes people look for answers elsewhere. It’s about finding reassurance and guidance that sometimes can't be given by the world we live in.

dog was shaking and it wasn't a cold day outside. The house needed to be blessed by the Church. I have been able in the past to move lost energies out of people’s homes but this one wasn’t in my remit. The client did have a priest bless the home and as far as I know all seems well now. Donna will be appearing on the 19th October 2012 at The Floral Pavilion, New Brighton, Wirral .Tickets are available directly through their box office. Ticket price is £12.00. Call the box office on 0151 666 0000 or visit www.floralpavilion.com

For those who have never been to see a medium what can they expect? A reading with me is simply like having a conversation with your loved ones who have crossed over. It’s as if they’re in the room with you, but of course they are in spirit. You will not feel scared or worried but you will feel connected to them. It is always a wonderful and uplifting experience. Sometimes though, if a person is closed to the process, it can make it more difficult for a medium to read you. Saying this, the greatest gift we can all give our loved ones on the other side is just to acknowledge them. You don't need a medium like me to send that love and appreciation back to them. Do you ever get anything bad or evil to come through? Being a spiritual medium and clairvoyant, you can encounter spirits who are not so welcome. To give you an example of this, I was on my way to read a client last year, but while driving, I started to feel really ill. It felt like I had food poising, yet earlier on that morning I was fine. I knew an energy didn't want me at this house. But I’ve learnt to heavily protect myself from energies like this. On arrival to my client’s home, I knew there was a young girl in spirit who was very unhappy, causing a disturbance to the family living there. The energy was so intense that the

Whether you want to conquer anxiety, think more positively or maintain your motivation tapping can help you become a success.

Imagine for a moment that you’re a success. It’s in the job description to be confident, positive, driven and fearless. So, you’ve tried coaching, development classes and even stalking the panel of Dragon’s Den. But something’s holding you back. Actually, quite a lot is holding you back - anxiety, procrastination and a fear of failure to name but a few. The solution? Tapping. Yup, you heard right, jabbing specific points on your body can make your life a whole lot better. Popularised by celebrities and sports personalities, Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), more popularly known as tapping therapy, is based on the theory that negative emotions are caused by disturbances in the body′s energy field. Often referred to as acupuncture without needles, EFT involves locating and tapping on meridian points in the body while thinking of a negative emotion and using positive suggestion and thoughts to alter the body′s energy flow, restore balance and reprogram the thought process. American PGA players have been spotted doing it around the golf course, Madonna is rumoured to be a fan and interior designer Kelly Hoppen has used it to help her cope with anxiety. “The combination of tapping the energy meridians and voicing positive affirmation works to clear the "shortcircuit" or the emotional block from your body's bio-energy system,” explains Everton Brown, a therapist from

21

Liverpool. “As that happens, imbalances are eliminated from the body’s energy system and negative emotions are weakened and eventually eradicated.” It may sound bonkers but EFT has had impressive results on a whole spectrum of emotional issues and is rapidly making its mark in the professional arena. Everton recounts the case of an executive who was struggling to hit tough targets. His anxiety about sales and meeting new demands had started to manifest themselves as physical ailments. “He now exceeds those targets on a daily basis,” says Everton. “I just hope his bosses ask him: ‘what happened to you?’” Several other similar stories are recounted, including a man who was saved from turning down a promotion because he was afraid of giving presentations. But it’s not just work related issues that are tackled by this non invasive technique, tapping has also proved beneficial to addictive smokers, over eaters and heart broken divorcees.

Tapping Therapy In 4 Steps 1. State your goal or desired outcome. 2. Identify and neutralise tail-enders (limiting self beliefs and images that stop you from achieving that goal) using EFT. Powerful points include the lower edge of your hand, the top of your head, the inside edge of your eyebrow, your chin and under the top part of your arm. 3. Formulate affirmations, visualisations, and mental rehearsals. Introduce affirmations that encourage positive self-talk, which can impact on your self-image

“Apart from the high success rate, there are many benefits to EFT including immediate results, lasting positive changes and the fact that it can be done anywhere,” concludes Everton. “It can increase the productivity of a workforce, relieve sales call reluctance and work towards the betterment of a workforce’s well-being. The possibilities are endless.”

and core beliefs. Add an image of you succeeding. The persistent repetition of an affirmation paired with vivid image conditions the mind towards perceptions, thoughts, and behaviours that conform to the newly envisioned reality. 4. Literatours The 200th anniversary of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice follows hot on the heels of Charles Dickens’ bicentenary and the World Shakespeare Festival. This has caused a thirst for literary tours - or - as dubbed by VisitEngland literatours. We list our favourite six. 1. Bram Stoker's Whitby With its imposing Abbey looming from the cliff tops and age old cobbled streets - the northeast fishing town of Whitby was naturally the atmospheric inspiration for Bram Stoker’s Dracula. For a guided-tour with extra bite, join the Bram Stoker Dracula Experience and hear spooky stories about Whitby. Alternatively, you could load up on the garlic at dinner and climb the 199 steps to St Mary’s Churchyard by moonlight. Dracula fans will love the Bram Stoker International Film Festival, held this year from 25th – 28th October. It has everything a gore enthusiast could want – including screenings of classic and new horror movies. The climax to the four-day scare-fest’ is the Vampire’s Ball – an extravaganza that promises illusionists, magic and distinctly dark surprises. www.whitbyonline.co.uk/whitbyhistory/ bramstoker

2. Jane Austen’s Bath Next January marks 200 years since the first publication of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice - and where better place to celebrate than Bath? The city’s perfectly preserved Georgian architecture takes you into the world of Northanger Abbey and Persuasion. Head to The Jane Austen Centre, located in a Georgian town house just a few doors down from where she once lived. Inside, an exhibition of costumes, manuscripts, and film clips brings the author’s influences to life. work. After you’ve celebrated

the life and times of Bath’s most famous resident, nip up to Regency Tea Rooms. There, you’ll find fifteen varieties of loose leaf tea to sample - after which you’ll just have time to pop into the gift shop and pick up your ‘I Love Darcy’ T-shirt. www.visitbath.co.uk/janeausten

3. Beatrix Potter's Lake District The creator of Peter Rabbit spent many of her childhood holidays in the Lake District, heavily influencing her stories. Squirrel Nutkin sailed on Derwent water, while Hawkshead was the setting for The Tale of Johnny Townmouse. With the profits from her highly successful publications, Potter bought 14 farms, sheep and 4000 acres of land in the Lake District, which she left to the National Trust. The film "Miss Potter", starring Renée Zellweger and Ewan McGregor, has brought a surge of interest in the filming locations of Loughrigg Terrace, Loughrigg Tarn, Grasmere and Yew Tree Farm in Coniston. www.visitcumbria.com/beatrix-potter

5. Dickens Country, Kent This year marks the bicentenary of Charles Dickens’ birth. Kent is where Dickens spent much of his childhood and where he lived out the final 13 years of his life. It’s where stories like Great Expectations and Pickwick Papers come alive, with many of the original settings surviving into the 21st century. The region is packed with interesting tours and trails. www.dickens2012.org

6. Norwich, UNESCO City of Literature Keen readers should also head to Norwich, the first English city to be awarded the UNESCO City of Literature title, and one of only six cities in the world with the permanent accolade. The award was given in recognition of Norwich’s sensational literary past, from the first battlefield dispatch (1075) to the first woman published in English (Julian of Norwich – C15th). The city is also home to the largest concentration of published dissenters, revolutionaries and social reformers (C18th /19th) including Tom Paine and the 30 million bestseller, Anna Sewell, the UK’s first City of Refuge (2006) for persecuted writers and to cap it all, the Norfolk & Norwich Millennium Library (C21st), which has the highest number of visitors and users in the UK – by far. http://www.visitnorwich.co.uk/

California Dreaming Lapping up seafood with sea lions, riding the golden gate bridge and hopping on and off cable cars. Louise Parker explores the five things that puts the ‘cisco’ into San Francisco. Once home to the world’s most notorious criminals, including Al Capone, Al Catraz is a definite must see. The island lies in the bay area, more than a mile off the shore. It’s a fun ride over and the audio tour guide leads you efficiently around the derelict prison; close your eyes, listen to the sound effects, and you’ll feel as if you are there amongst the prisoners. Spooky!

3. Fisherman’s Wharf & Pier 39 Fisherman's Wharf is home to many active fishermen and their fleets and is a busy tourist attraction. Pier 39 is the busiest stretch on Fisherman’s Wharf and is home to an array of amazing shops, restaurants, a video arcade, street performances, virtual 3D rides, and great views of the Californian sea lions. If you’re a real food lover, be sure to try Dungeness’ crab and clam chowder served in a sourdough bread bowl.

1. The Golden Gate Bridge This big, bold, orange structure is a beloved symbol of San Francisco, linking the city to Marin County. For the fitness fanatics among you, you can hire a bike to cross the bridge and take in the breathless views as you peddle. If, however, like me, you are afraid of lycra and heights - you can always get across by car, bus or taxi. The city’s lingering fog hangs low on the bridge, lending itself to some magical photographs.

4. Lombard Street It’s a steep ride driving down the streets of San Francisco - and not for the faint hearted. Lombard Street, which has appeared in several films, is famous for being the waviest street in the world. The crooked section is about ¼ mile long and has eight sharp turns - which is fun to follow. 5. Cable cars The cable cars in this city are iconic and are the only mobile National Monument in the world. I took one to China town, which was cool. They are a great way to get around in that you can hop on and off as you please. Just - hold on tight!
