WELCOME Spring is in the air, bringing the promise of longer days, warmer weather, spring blooms and lighter evenings. Spring to me means spending time outside exercising, walking the dog, enjoying park life with the family. Thankfully these things cost nothing but make us feel so much better. Bring it on!
In this issue, you can read about the developments at award winning hair salon Kudos in Pontyclun and see the pretty new pieces available at Bryl’s Boutique in Barry. If you’re lucky enough to be going on a cruise or if you’ve received an invite to a wedding, then new business Katwalk will certainly have the outfit with the wow factor. We are delighted to have a full and frank interview with fashion stylist and image consultant Suzanne Jaya about her life long battle with illness. Despite this, Suzanne’s positive and cheery nature wins through.

REVIEWS OF THE LATEST
It’s been said that we could all do with going back to family values, and what better way than a slice of cake and a spot of sewing at The Linen Cupboard in Cowbridge, a shop full of gorgeousness – hugs for free. If you’re human (or horse) and finding things tough, then a consultation with mentor Helen Wingstedt might restore that confidence and wellbeing that’s been lacking of late. I’m sure that there’ll be something of interest in our latest issue for everyone. Enjoy!

PASSIONATE ABOUT THE VALE We are independent. We live in the Vale. We are not a large publishing group pretending to be home grown. Vale Life magazine is written, designed and produced in the Vale of Glamorgan for the people of the Vale of Glamorgan. ❧ OUR PHILOSOPHY We are committed to quality. This quote by William Foster pretty much sums up our thinking. “Quality is never an accident; it is always the result of high intention, sincere effort, intelligent direction and skillful execution; it represents the wise choice of many alternatives.” ❧ USE IT OR LOSE IT Business is the very life blood of any community. Without business, villages have no heart, towns have no centre and cities have no soul. Please support the businesses who advertise in Vale Life - without them there’d be no Vale Life. ❧ SMALL(ISH) PRINT © Copyright Vale Life 2009. All rights reserved. Interior designer and partner in Hamptons the home and garden store Penarth and set designer for Vale Life’s photoshoots. Andy’s articles have shown readers that they don’t have to settle for the mundane or ordinary and that you really don’t have to go to London to find good design and quality.
Francis is our small, but perfectly formed, music correspondent and aficionado who spends literally hundreds of hours listening to music in oder to bring you the best selection of CD’s known to humankind - especially the Welsh ones!
Derek photographs and covers social, society and special events for Vale Life and also contributes to features and some of our reviews.
Best things in life? As a bit of a workaholic having a day off to do what normal people do… cleaning, ironing, gardening, on the other hand work seems like a better option.
Best things in life? Music, music, music oh and of course my partner Martin, friends, family and Tommy and Lucas (my cats).
Best things in life? I love being outdoors, especially camping and surfing trips in Pembrokeshire with my three sons, Peroni beer, Wales and my iPod. What have your learned from 2008? To make the most of every day and every opportunity and to try to see more live music!
I’m looking forward to... Seeking out the unusual and boldly going where no store has been before!
I’m looking forward to... The Neil Young archives finally being released (ten DVD boxset due for release in the spring). The Green Man Festival 21-23 August. The Iris Prize (lesbian and gay short film festival) 7 - 10th October. Having an intelligent man in the White House for a change.

Our gardening guru provides tips on how to get the best from your garden and also looks at anything of a horticultural nature in the Vale.
Amanda is our photoshoot make-up artist and helps to create the look to compliment the feel of the shoot.
What have your learned from 2008? That some people keep things other than wine in their fridges!
Best things in life? Without a doubt it would be paddling out on my surfboard from a warm sandy beach into big, crystal clear waves and, of course, spending some quality time with my lovely wife Julie afterwards! What have your learned from 2008? That no matter what life throws at you, if you’re open to change, there are always opportunities around the corner. I’m looking forward to... Solvency, serenity and spirituality for all!
Best things in life? Sharing the pleasure of gardening with other people, cooking, Somerset cider, music and football. What have your learned from 2008? To not stop learning. I’m looking forward to... Spending more time in my own garden, going to Texas, growing more veg, spending less time watching rubbish television and more time writing. Finding where my sons hide all the remotes for the television! ❧ 7 ❧
I’m looking forward to... I’ve got some new projects in the pipeline and I’m hoping to put on some exhibitions this year and look forward to meeting loads of new and exciting people to photograph.
Best things in life? Family and friends to share life's experiences with. They lift you up when you’re down and ground you when you go off on a tangent! What have your learned from 2008? Personally I developed a new found wisdom that has helped me feel a lot more confident in myself which I hope will continue in 2009. Must be my age! I’m looking forward to... Longer, sunnier days, a few short breaks both home and away and generally being outdoors more.

Fun raising track day at Llandow Circuit
The Vale of Glamorgan Agricultural Show
The Ed Evans Foundation will be involved in three different fundraising events during April – now is the time to decide which one you would like to support.
I can’t think of a better way to spend a Wednesday in August and this year will be no exception as the Vale of Glamorgan Agricultural Show hits the grounds of Fonmon Castle again on the 19th August from 8.30am to 8pm.
You can drive, walk or dance – all aim to be enjoyable and raise funds for good causes. The Foundation is now a registered charity, so Gift Aid will provide another 28% from the Revenue. The Ed Evans Foundation was set up by the late Ed Evans who died in 2007 at the age of 27 from a brain tumour. The Foundation has so far raised over £60,000 for various charities. On Wednesday 1st April there will be a fund-raising track day at Llandow Circuit near Cowbridge. Numbers are limited and only a few places remain – £95 will enable you to drive your own car at speed on a motor racing circuit.
Vale Life were delighted to have had a marquee at last year’s show. For those of you who went and popped their heads in, ours was the African inspired mirage conjured up by those incredibly talented guys, Andy and Peter of Hamptons in Penarth. Last year’s event was a bit soggy but we’re all hoping for better weather this year and expect visitor numbers to be well up on previous years as the momentum builds.
On Easter Monday 13th April the second Easter Walk will take place. One of many sponsored walks taking place around the world raising awareness to the plight of brain tumour patients, their family and friends. Finally, on Saturday 25th April a gala ball and auction will take place at Sophia Gardens, Cardiff. The Ed Evans Foundation 01656 890217 edevansfoundation@btinternet.com
ABERTHIN
Cinderella as never before presented What happens when you cross Cinderella, James Bond and Mama Mia? You get the first Aberthin Village Hall Pantomime of course. Secret agents are trying to stop the evil Edna Blowave and her henchmen/ugly daughters from getting their hands on the Llandow Supertip where they plan to take over the world. The future of the village lies in the hands of one man. His name is Buttons, James Buttons… you get the gist of the pantomime!
Under the expert direction and production by Glesni Jones, the audience was not disappointed from the opening, “The name’s Buttons, James Buttons,” to the grand finale of a carefully choreographed ‘Dancing Queen’, and all the “It’s behind you” moments in between. Vicky Lloyd as Cinderella, impressed with her transformation from kitchen girl to the belle of the ball. Nick Schoner and John Burns put in excellent portrayals as the ugly sisters, but the title of pantomime dame was stolen by Huw Lloyd’s magnificent and outrageous delivery of Edna Blowave, whose outfits were truly alarming and caused envious comments about the shapeliness of his legs from several female members of the audience! ❧ 8 ❧
It’s a jolly good day out for all of the family with trade stands galore, food hall, craft fair, home produce, agricultural and horticultural. This year’s attractions include Katy Cropper Ducks and Dogs Display, Circus Workshops, Punch and Judy Shows, Road Train and Laser Clay Pigeon Shooting. We’ve already got our thinking caps on for our next theme – unless anyone’s got any suggestions? If you’d like to sponsor the event or represent your business at the show, there are various ways of getting involved. Check out how on www.valeofglamorganshow.co.uk See you there! For more information contact Mrs Nicola Gibson on 01446 710099 vale.show@btinternet.com www.valeofglamorganshow.co.uk

Golden girl Nicole Cooke wins MBE After a momentous year for the Welsh queen of the road, Nicole Cooke, comes the announcement that more awards have come her way. Nicole, along with many in the Great Britain Cycling team was awarded an MBE in recognition of her Olympic Gold and then Nicole learnt she had also been named Transworld Sport Female Athlete of the Year by the Channel 4 Global TV Sports Programme. Nicole admitted to being surprised and really pleased at winning this award, “I think winning an award outside of the sport of cycling that compares people across different sports is very special and that was a big surprise when I found out. I was really proud to have that award, especially alongside some one like Usain Bolt who won Male Athlete of 2008.”
“The MBE was never something I thought about when training or racing at the Olympics or the Worlds but it is a very nice bonus and to get it in 2008 just makes the whole season a very special one to remember!” she added.
The 25 year old, from Wick in the Vale of Glamorgan, has also announced an exciting new project for the future and a new team for 2009 - Vision1 Racing. It has always been her goal to create a new strong team in women’s cycling with the best environment possible for riders to perform to their abilities and with the spirit and focus on personal development as well sporting success.
“When I began cycling, there was no British rider racing at international level and so I had to go to Europe and join different professional teams and make my own path which also meant ❧ 9 ❧
learning everything by myself, sometimes the hard way through my own mistakes on my way to top of women's road racing. It would make me very proud now to help younger riders follow their sporting ambitions leading by example and sharing my experiences of the last fifteen years so that hopefully they too can realise their own dreams in cycling like I have been able to. This will initially be a four year project and I believe we can create the most united and strongest team ready to try and repeat the success of 2008 in 2012.” For more info visit www.nicolecooke.com

This catches Neil in playful and relaxed mood and provides a fascinating insight into exactly where he was at during this particular time. Highlights include “Birds” and a stripped down acoustic version of “Loner” that is radically different to the recorded version.
If you thought Mary Hopkin was just about ‘Those Were the Days’ think again. This collection of archive songs 1970 – 1986 proves that she was, and luckily still is, a classy folk singer. Even better news is that she is due to record new material this year.

Fresh, original and uplifting, containing a new sound that is highly infectious – once you get hooked. Beach Boy sweet vocals over repetitive refrains, samples and subtle beats. Experimental, yet still accessible. Standout African infused ‘Brother Sport’ is driving, climactic and joyous.
One of those bands that has been so hotly tipped by the industry that they won’t be allowed to fail. In the same vein as the Editors, they sing doom-laden epics with swelling, anthemic choruses. Coming soon to a stadium near you.

The Crying Light
One of Wales’ best live bands follow their throbbingly excellent single ‘Death Before Employment’ with this live collection. Post nu-rave performance art floor fillers for the ‘Skins’ generation – call it what you will Sicknote could well go ballistic in 2009.
A round up of singles released so far. Bright shiny folk pop with tracks such as ‘Same Old Lines’ several of which should have been top 10 hits. The song ‘Hints of Him’ is haunting and memorable and demonstrates significant potential as a songwriter.
The first album was visceral and challenging, the second with its wide range of styles won the Mercury. This, the third release, is more intimate and delicate with mostly piano led songs of introspection. Standout song ‘Epilepsy is Dancing’ is simply spine tingling.

Years of Refusal
The new would be queen of electro pop has already produced the most perfect pop moment of the year so far with ‘Just Dance’ and ‘Poker Face’ is almost as good. Not exactly electro - this is more Pussycat Doll than Miss Kitten.
When it comes to Welsh Americana Jimi Alexander is fast becoming the leader of the pack. A highly distinctive voice that is dark, smouldering and passionate. This, together with memorable songs, such as ‘Queen of Denmark’, make this a classy debut indeed.
Usually inaccurately labelled miserable, Morrissey’s first single from this release ‘I’m Throwing My Arms Around Paris’ the city not Ms Hilton - sounds like a return to form and is as good the best of his early solo career. Morrissey turns 50 in May.

Bringing together themes as diverse as missing cats, car adverts and Chinese foot-binding, this collection displays a range and a sharp edge that establish Anna Wigley as a literary force to be reckoned with.
2009 marks the centenary of the 1909 National Pageant, held in Cardiff’s Sophia Gardens to great public acclaim which celebrated Wales through the ages. This is a wonderful, lively read about one of the most famous public spectacles held in Wales in modern times.

After this winter of discontent, a little indulgence is just what the doctor ordered, so we thought we’d show you a few looks to see you through Spring and Summer. We enlisted a DBS from Stratstone, Cardiff, hunky model Rhys and the gorgeous coastal location of Atlantic College sets the scene...
If you want to stand out from the crowd this Spring, Giorgio’s of High Street, Barry has the sharpest dinner suits and the smartest casual wear. Casual cool If you want to stand out from the crowd this Spring, why not go for something a little less formal, but smart, nonetheless. A cool tan leather jacket, paired with tailored trousers, check shirt and tan shoes, topped off with a scarf in the same tone as the outfit will fit the bill perfectly.

With more hours of sunshine than California and only short periods of rainfall, the Algarve has the perfect climate for holidaymakers looking to soak up the sun. It’s easy to see why, as a family, we keep going back!
FAR AWAY SO CLOSE Up until a few years ago we wouldn’t have considered Portugal as a holiday destination having always favoured Minorca and Mallorca. However, after a friend of ours kindly offered us the use of their beautiful villa near Carvoeiro, we’ve been hooked ever since. So, when the opportunity came for us to take a family break, we chose the five star VILA VITA Parc Hotel, only thirty five minutes drive from Faro airport, close to where we had originally stayed. One of the Leading Hotels of the World, VILA VITA Parc has to be seen to be believed. The hotel is set in 200,000 square metres and has beautifully manicured grounds with a spectacular range of subtropical plants and has its own private beach. We were spoilt for choice for accommodation with a choice of the main or private villas or family suites. We opted for one of the family suites, a little away from the main building but within easy walking distance of all of the facilities.
As you’d expect from its rating, our suite was beautifully designed, immaculate with three balconies giving views to the gardens and sea. We also benefitted from a roof terrace from which we could view the lavish abundance of the hotel’s plants and flowers. With nine restaurants to choose from, we certainly were spoilt for choice when it came to mealtimes.
Children are particularly welcomed in the Algarve and the hotel is fully equipped to keep the young ones happy with their play area, children’s pools and child care facilities at Anabella’s Kids Park and Natalie’s, the VILA VITA Parc’s crèche. The hotel staff were very welcoming and very accommodating with our every whim catered for. We can’t wait to return!
We could also visit the hotel’s beach restaurant just a taxi ride away or, as we did on a couple of occasions, a pleasant forty minute stroll along the coastal path and stretch of beach.
What we loved ■ The breakfasts! Everything you could think of from meats and cheeses, porridge and cereals to full English and pancakes ■ The sheer luxury of the hotel ■ Breathtaking beaches ■ Free transfers to and from the Hotel’s Beach Restaurant ■ The 18 hole putting green ■ The friendliness of the Portuguese
Spa goers would have been in their element with the VILA VITA Vital Spa with their wide range of high quality beauty treatments and being the fit family we spent much of our time in the resort’s Health Club with its state-of-the-art gym, crammed with Technogym equipment, Finnish sauna, steam baths and whirlpool. There was even a cold room packed full of snow. It was a bit cold when we stayed so we couldn’t make use of the outdoor pool but the temperature regulated indoor pool was great fun. There was certainly plenty to do at VILA VITA Parc, with the 9 hole pitch and putt practice course, five tennis courts, weekly sports programmes and a host of other possibilities. You could even charter the hotel’s luxury yacht and explore the beautiful Algarve coastline and visit the many secluded coves and beaches.

Vale Life’s resident garden expert Bob Priddle lifts the lid on composting and gets to grips with the horticultural preparations for the coming season.
VALE GARDENS Winter is slowly but surely coming to an end. We have become so used to mild winters in recent years that this one came as a bit of a shock to plants such as Echiums that have been enjoying the previous mild winters and have taken a bit of a hammering. Also, what were described as ‘frost resistant ‘pots have been shown to be not as resistant as they have been in the previous years. As well as my pots garden birds have also had a tough time of it. I always think that having birds feeding in the garden is a real bonus. Leaving aside the pleasure of seeing and hearing them there is also the fringe benefit of birds as part of your pest control system. A good bird population can help control pests such as slugs, snails and aphids. If you’re growing fruit you may need to provide netting to keep them from eating your crops but I think the inconvenience is worth it. Spring is my favourite time of year in the garden with all the promises of the season ahead. If winter is a time for cutting back and clearing then spring is the time to start sowing seeds. Hardy annuals are a group of plants that are sadly overlooked, especially when it comes to growing climbing hardy annuals. Although you can sow the seeds directly into the ground at the end of March through April I also like to sow some in containers, then transplant into pots.
They then can be used to fill in gaps in borders. They’re much cheaper than bedding plants, most of which are half hardy annuals, and still provide great colour and interest. When preparing compost I generally add some perlite to the mixture. Perlite is a naturally occurring rock that is heat treated. As it is heated it expands up to forty times its own size. This lightweight white rock then absorbs water and helps to improve the air to water balance and also stops the compost becoming too wet and seedlings rotting off. For starting off your annual climbing plants a tip is to use the cardboard tubes from the inside of toilet rolls. Climbing plants need long cool root runs and these tubes are ideal. Because they’re bio degradable you can also plant them straight into the garden. Good garden compost does not happen by accident. But the ingredients to make good compost are not as difficult as you may think. A container is helpful but no essential. Because I use so much of it I make my own containers which will hold the largish quantities. Good compost is about getting a suitable balance of nitrogen, carbon, water and air combined with some suitable bacteria. Your household waste can be added to the heap, just remember not to include man made materials, cooked food or meats. Toilet roll tubes or tubes from the centres of kitchen roll provide great sources of carbon. Corrugated cardboard, as long as its not waxed, can also be included.
These simple tips will help ensure you get a fantastic compost: ■ Don’t just pile loads of grass clippings on as it creates too much nitrogen and not enough carbon. ■ Try and make a simple lid for your heap. Weighing down a few plastic bags will do - no lid and rain can make your heap too wet. ■ If we do get a dry summer, leave the lid off and give your heap some water to stop the material drying out. ■ Add the occasional spade full of top soil which will help to give the bacteria you need to increase the speed at which your heap rots down. Get these things right and next autumn you’ll be digging out marvellous dark brown humus-rich compost! BOB’S TOP TIPS
Climbing annuals that can be easily grown from seed Ipomea – Morning Glory As well as the stunning Heavenly Blue there are also the darker colours of varieties such Black Night. Sweet Peas Probably the most popular of annual climbers. Make sure you go for a scented variety such as Percy Thrower. Thunbergia - Black Eyed Susan As well as being great climbers they also work well as subjects in hanging baskets. Quamoclit lobata - Mina lobata or Spanish Flag This is an absolute stunner and once you’ve found how easy it is to grow from seed you’ll grow it again and again. Chilean glory vine Although this is technically a tender perennial it can be grown from seed and will flower in the first year of growth.

Hamptons is owned and run by Andy Bradshaw and Peter Knowles. This wonderful store has a keen following of devoted fans. Here are Vale Life’s top five reasons to visit if you’ve never sampled this truly inspirational oasis of...
RETAIL HEAVEN The Store
The Products
The Design Service
Many have described Hamptons as the closest thing to retail heaven and we can quite see why. The perfect combination of a wonderfully elegant building beautifully converted and filled with the most exquisite and unusual products, served by the friendliest of staff is just the tip of the iceberg.
With everything from a greetings card to a sofa, the store is full of the most fabulous things. Gorgeous, unusual and irresistible, we found it almost impossible to leave without making a purchase.
Both Peter and Andy are experts within their fields of garden and interior design. The two are hugely approachable and for those who are thinking of engaging an interior or garden designer both Peter and Andy inspire confidence from the outset.
The owners, Peter Knowles and Andy Bradshaw have thought of just about everything. And being rather talented designers they have created the perfect shopping experience. The laid back jazz playing outside the store lures you in and once through the door, your senses are bombarded. Deliciously fragrant room scents, delicate bath truffles, dazzling glassware and exotic arrangements of flowers and that’s just inside the door! There are two floors of even more wonderful products to explore so, it’s no wonder that some customers want to stay all day.
The store has an exceptional range of products; glassware by LSA, candles and home fragrance by Wax Lyrical and bath products by Di Palomo are just some of the delights in store not to mention the best selection of greetings cards we have ever seen. Upstairs features furniture including Content by Conran, the most spectacular cushions and rugs (the pebble rug is simply divine), as well as lighting, picture frames, funky telephones and design led accessories.
You only have to look at the store to realise that they know their stuff! Their clients range from entire new builds to an hours consultancy for those who have slightly lost their way. They also provide follow up services for garden clients who want to keep their gardens looking pristine and a house doctor service for those who want to sell their property and need it to look its best. Designing weddings and events are another speciality so if you are looking for something really special for the big day then Hamptons could be the answer. Both Peter and Andy are generally available at the store to discuss projects as well as offering free advice on products within the store. If you would like any information about their design work they have an information pack detailing how the design process works as well as outline costs.
It’s impossible to compare Hamptons with any other department store, even in London. The care and detail is extraordinary and the products well that’s another story altogether.

The Blue Pelican Café Whether its morning coffee, lunch or afternoon tea, the Blue Pelican Café is simply the best place to meet up in Penarth. No matter how gloomy the day might be, inside Hamptons the lush palms and staff in tropical shirts make every day a holiday. The food is made daily from the freshest ingredients and they can guarantee that they know exactly what goes into every dish on the menu. Start off with a helping of Aunt Harriet’s home made soup - carrot and ginger, spicy parsnip or mulligatawny are among the regulars or your can choose a smaller helping and combine it with a freshly made sandwich. The main courses have rather whimsical titles such as, Lifeguard’s Lunchbox, the Italian Job and Falafel Feast. The café also has a great selection of veggie options as well as gluten and dairy free choices.
The Service If you have any room left then you’ll probably find the call of the cake table irresistible - Luscious Lemon Drizzle, Chocoholic’s Chocolate Fudge and the Classic Victoria Sponge really are truly scrumptious. After dark, Hamptons sees the transformation from daytime café to something even more sophisticated. The evening events have proven to be hugely popular with something to suit most musical tastes. From Opera to Jazz, Mowtown to Broadway the events vary tremendously and the menu is themed accordingly. You can pick up details of forthcoming events from the store or the Hamptons web site. Book early as they tend to sell out fast!
“The evening events have proven to be hugely popular.”
From the moment you step through the door you know you have entered somewhere rather special. Staff who greet you, offer advice, gift wrap exquisitely for free - sounds like a dream doesn’t it. But at Hamptons the dream is a reality. Their strap line is ‘The exception not the rule’, which many would say is quite a hard one to deliver but here we found the service really was of an exceptional quality. Nothing is too much trouble. They will carry your purchases to the car as a matter of course, and as the heavens opened outside we were even offered an umbrella to borrow. All in all, Hamptons has to be high on your list of stores to visit this season you won’t be disappointed!

RESTAURANT REVIEWS Each issue we review a selection of Vale restaurants.
VA L E
Book a table... you’ll be glad you did There’s no better time to frequent your local restaurant or eatery than now. Yes, times are tough but we all need a treat now and again and a meal out with your loved ones, family or friends never fails to hit all the right endorphin fuelled buttons. Here are a few options we’ve tried or had recommended. If it’s midweek lunch you’re looking for, then the newly refurbished Oscar’s on Cowbridge High Street is one to try if you haven’t already. If curry is your thing, then curry night at The Star Inn, Wick is having rave reviews but make sure you book as it is very popular. Farthing’s in Cowbridge also never disappoints along with their fab deli. And thinking about deli’s, Foxy’s Deli in Penarth is popular with locals as is Thyme Out in Dinas Powys and Food For Thought on Barry’s High Street.
When it comes to Sunday lunch, then you really are spoilt for choice. The Bear in Cowbridge gets recommended to us a lot, as does the The New Red Lion Inn in Pendoylan (evening meals are superb there too). Illtud’s in Llantwit Major offers excellent roasts and you can take a nice stroll along Llantwit beach afterwards. For the caffeine collectors out there, Vanilla on the High Street in Barry does superb latté’s and cappuccinos (and great breakfasts). They also do tapas in the evenings on a Friday and Saturday. Talking about tapas, don’t forget Bar 44 in Cowbridge or Tempus Fugit in Southerndown – both are fab. Back to coffee (and food), Ocho Lounge in Penarth has a great atmosphere too – we always seem to end up having meetings there. The Gallery in Cowbridge (opposite Havana and High Society) prepares excellent pizzas and are now also offering frozen home-made meals to take away and they do great coffee.
NEWPORT
If you only do one thing this season, then treat yourself and your loved one to an overnight’s stay at the Celtic Manor Resort. My husband and I managed a sneaky break at this five star resort recently and as soon as we arrived and were shown to our beautifully appointed, spotlessly clean double room, the stresses of the day (and previous few months!) began to ebb away.
“We’re from a dining club and our experience this evening has been unforgettable.”
Finally, if afternoon tea and scrumptious cakes makes your taste buds tingle, The Blue Pelican Café at Hamptons in Penarth is a must visit (see page 20), as is The Linen Cupboard in Cowbridge, (see page 36). Forget the credit crunch – it’s time for lunch. Book a table today and give yourselves a real treat! If you’ve had a great meal or a fantastic time at a Vale eatery we’d love to hear about it. Recommendations really help our local businesses so whether it was a great coffee, fabulous meal or just simply good service, let us know.
Needless to say, for a restaurant of this caliber, the mood of the room was just right and the service was impeccable. We took the time to ask other diners over a drink what they thought of the experience. A couple who dine out once a month said “superb”, a table of four “we came for an anniversary and we were really made a fuss of. We can’t wait for another birthday!” and a table of six said “We’re from a dining club and our experience this evening has been unforgettable. We must try The Crown at Whitebrook”.
The Crown at Celtic Manor
I must admit I do enjoy little touches of style and that’s just what you get at the Celtic Manor. Fluffy white robes and slippers, a bowl of fresh fruit and even a freshly made doughnut with pouring cream, set us up nicely in readiness for our evening meal at the hotel’s three AA rosette restaurant, recently awarded for its culinary excellence.
If you pop down to Vida in Porthcawl for a spot of retail therapy, you can round off the visit with a stroll around the corner to Beales – in our opinion, one of the best fish and chip shops in the county. Their haddock is to die for.
Part of unwinding for us is being able to lounge around and read magazines which we did until dinner. Having eaten at the Michelin starred Crown at Whitebrook, we were already of the culinary skills of executive chef James Sommerin, and were equally impressed with head chef Tim McDougall’s delivery at the resort. Who wouldn’t be with foie gras poached in port, fig wafer and wine reduction to start, roast monkfish loin with cheek poached in red wine, wild mushrooms and gratin potato for mains and bitter chocolate mousse, basil sorbet and orange for dessert. Each course was interspersed with delicious appetizers. ❧ 22 ❧

P E N D OY L A N
The New Red Lion, Pendoylan We were lucky enough to review The New Red Lion gastro pub in Pendoylan early last year and when owner and Head Chef Kami Soroush invited us again this year, we were intrigued to sample his new menu to see if our last visit could be equalled. We didn’t expect to be blown away by what was on offer... that just came as a matter of course. For those of you who didn’t read the review or haven’t visited the restaurant, it can be found in the pretty little village of Pendoylan in the heart of the Vale. Kami and his wife Azi bought the pub in 2005 which they refurbished to a very high standard, using Azi’s creative interior design skills. Kami uses only the finest, locally sourced ingredients which was evident during our visit as was his extensive knowledge of fine wines. We began our evening with a drink in the bar area before going through to the dining room on the ground floor. The atmosphere was laid back with attentive, but not obtrusive, staff. Having perused the well thought out menu, we decided on prawn and avocado timbale and spicy oriental duck salad to start. The avocado and prawn dish was full of flavour with good chunks of avocado and just the right amount of prawns in a rich, creamy sauce.
When our main courses came, both dishes were beautifully presented and burgeoning with a whole host of flavours which had us both picking at each other’s plates on a dish sampling frenzy. I don’t know whether it’s good eqituette to do this but frankly we didn’t care. As much as I was delighted with my choice of casserole, the mushroom and marsalla sauce on my partner’s chicken dish was tempting me to keep going back for more and I’ve never been good with temptation!
The duck, again full of flavour and plentiful, was perfectly cooked and embedded in a tasteful mountain of interesting, well seasoned salad. Both starters were the perfect appetisers for our main courses of breast of chicken with a mushroom and marsalla sauce served with basmati rice and white truffle oil and venison casserole with port and orange served with stuffed courgettes and duchess potatoes. During our starter, Kami brought to our table a bottle of Chateau Caronne Ste Gemme, Haut Medoc 2002 and assured us that it would be perfect for both the chicken and the casserole main course. Kami certainly knows his wines... neither of us would normally choose a red, often sticking to white wines, but we were very pleasantly surprised.
We both agreed that it’s not often that we can both be wowed by both choice of dishes but they were truly orgasmic!
“We are definitely fans of the charismatic and skilled Kami!”
We gave ourselves a little time to fully appreciate our mains before casting our eyes over the dessert menu. Having both been ‘blessed’ with a sweet tooth, it was a difficult choice for us to make as there were too many temptations. Finally, we opted for the sticky toffee pudding and chocolate rum torte. Again, both plates were attractively presented, so much so that my partner was loath to disturb the intricate chocolate decoration placed on top of the torte. The toffee pudding was just as your gran used to make and the torte was rich, decadent and extremely chocolatey. Coffees and truffles finished off our meal and we both agreed that without sounding sycophantic, we are definitely fans of the charismatic and skilled Kami... and we don’t mind who knows it! ❧ 23 ❧

If you listen to the doom merchants, you’d think that no-one’s buying cars and the dealers are sat around twiddling their thumbs watching the tumbleweed roll by. John Boyce of Bassetts Honda in Bridgend claims it’s quite the opposite.
“The Insight really is a fun car, bristling with features and its styling is already causing quite a stir.”
HONDA HAPPINESS How is business? Actually quite good. Yes, the sales enquiries have dropped off slightly but the ones we’re getting are of better quality. Previously, we would have people pop in and look around with no real intention to buy. We are now finding that the people coming in are generally serious buyers looking to either trade up or buy a new Honda, so, in a way, it is a positive change.
Also, the service side of the business is brisk - we have a very loyal customer base. Honda owners tend to look after their vehicles, supported by the Honda Happiness fixed price servicing programme, ensuring that the cars are regularly serviced which helps to maintain their high resale value.
How about used car sales? Extremely well. In fact, February 2009 was the best month we have had for used car sales over the past seven years. We are selling cars quite far afield too. We’ve had buyers from London and the South-East in recently as well as the Midlands and the North of England. We’re certainly not twiddling our thumbs and here’s an example of how bouyant things are: recently we had a lovely, one owner, low mileage Jazz for sale. We had three interested parties on the car, the first two potential buyers went away to think about it with the third offering us the full asking price immediately he saw the car. The two other parties came back the following day and were very disappointed to have missed the opportunity to buy the car. We are now trying to supply them both with a comparable Jazz. What’s selling well at the moment? It’s steady across the whole range but Civics are still very popular and the Jazz is a great all rounder making it a good buy.
Any exciting new developments? The new Insight is causing a real stir at the moment. Honda’s goal with the Insight is to offer an affordable, practical hybrid that everyone can drive. They’ve kept the price of the base model as low as possible to ensure customers have affordable access to hybrid technology. We do offer different trim levels, though, so that you can choose what’s most important to you. It’s packed full of interesting features. For example, there’s a Guidance function that provides real time, fuel efficient driving. Brake or accelerate aggressively and the speedometer display will change colour from green to blue to let you know how fuel efficient your driving is. The Scoring function provides feedback on how you’re driving. At the end of each journey you are given an ECO score which is then added to your lifetime score. The better your score, the more money you’ve saved on fuel and the less harmful you’ve been to the environment.
“The new Honda Insight offers an affordable and practical hybrid that everyone can drive.” ❧ 24 ❧
There’s even an Econ Mode Button which adjusts the car to make the most of every last drop of fuel, by controlling the air conditioning unit, extending the idle stop time and increasing regenerative recharging when you brake – it’s all very exciting. The development team at Honda have considered everything on the Insight, right through to the transmission. For example, the Insight comes with continuously variable transmission (CVT). Unlike a traditional transmission, the Insight’s CVT flows seamlessly between an infinite number of effective gear ratios. This means that the driver can take advantage of a highly responsive acceleration and deceleration in seamless, step-less increments. It’s technological advances like this that put Honda right at the cutting edge of vehicle development.
Not only does this reduce noise and jerkiness, but it also helps reduce fuel consumption and emissions. Basically, this means Honda can offer an efficient transmission with the fun-to-drive quality that customers have come to expect. The Insight really is a fun car, bristling with features and its striking styling is already causing quite a stir. Green is good. In fact, with Insight, I’d say green is great! So, is green motoring a priority for Honda? Absolutely, part of the reason Honda has been so successful is it listens to customers – it gives them the kind of vehicles they want to drive. It’s the same philosophy here at Bassetts. We talk to customers, listen to them, invest in them – many have become good friends – what they think matters. We’re always looking for feedback.
Are your customers mostly local? The vast majority, yes. Although, as I mentioned earlier, we do get enquiries from around the UK. We’re a local business. Our customers are locals. Supporting local business is something I’m very passionate about. If we all spent our hard earned money locally and supported the good businesses, it would greatly help the local economy - it’s that simple, but then, like the Insight, the best ideas often are. What are you doing that’s different? Well, we are investing more in training to ensure that we are focused on our customers’ needs. In many ways the so-called credit crunch has given us a fresh look at the business and encouraged us to pull together as a team within the Company. We have great people here and they all understand how important they are to the success of this family owned business. They are all rising to the challenges - I’m very proud of them and the service that we provide to the local community. West House Country Hotel in Llantwit Major has a well deserved reputation for hosting some of the Vale’s best weddings. Newlyweds Kathryn and Ian tell us more.
Choosing the right wedding venue wasn’t a difficult decision for Ian and Kathryn Hill-Watkins. The most important factor for them was that they wanted a venue that was going to be theirs exclusively for the day and evening. That way they could be certain that they would get the intimacy and attention that their special day deserved. Kathryn and Ian tell us about their special day. We viewed a number of places, mostly the usual wedding reception venues, but wanted something a bit more personal and intimate. The West House provided this and offered better value in comparison with the other hotels we considered. Initially we spoke to the owner Richard Christopher and were in regular contact during the planning stages, and a month or so prior to the big day we met with Joanna, the Wedding Coordinator, and went through every step of the day which was reassuring for us. The day went very well indeed. It was excellent in fact. The threat of rain didn't come to anything and it was a lovely autumnal day. The gardens around the West House were perfect in this respect and the photographs really captured the time of year well.
The food was particularly good. Quite often catering for high numbers usually means the food is compromised but this wasn’t the case. We had the place to ourselves and the staff were attentive to us the whole time. One of the main reasons we chose West House was the intimacy of the hotel and the exclusive use of the whole venue, as they only have one function there at a time. This made for a really relaxed atmosphere. Our party were the only guests at the hotel so there were no worries about disturbing anyone else. We liked the fact that we weren’t confined to just one area - you had the main dining room and dance floor, the bar and lounge and then the conservatory area. So, if you didn’t like the volume of the music there were other areas you could go to, which was great as our son Gethin was only eight months at the time.

SOPHISTICATED CELEBRATIONS
The day passed so quickly it is somewhat of a blur! Apart from the nuptials and speeches, the evening entertainment was possibly the most memorable. We had booked an Elvis impersonator and were keen to keep this a secret from the guests purely for the surprise element. The hotel staff were very good in assisting with this and stealthily got him into the hotel without anyone noticing. Kathryn is a big Elvis fan so this was a real highlight!
The hotel dates back to the Sixteenth Century and was once the home of the Sheriff of Glamorgan. Only two minutes walk from St. Illtud’s, regarded as the oldest church in Wales and with Llantwit Major being the first centre of Christian learning in the UK, the West House Country Hotel has become one of the most popular wedding venues in the Vale of Glamorgan. Catering for up to 150 guests, up to 80 guests can be seated in the main dining room or up to 120 for a buffet. For larger weddings (up to 140 seated guests) a luxurious marquee can be set up in the enclosed walled gardens, which can also be used for the evening party with buffet for a maximum of 150. The hotel has twenty one en-suite bedrooms comprising three singles, seven twins and eleven doubles.

Kudos of Pontyclun is a hotbed of creative talent. They certainly have their fingers on the pulse of what’s hot for 2009. Vale Life speaks to Kudos on the current trends and how to wear them.
CREATIVE KUDOS What’s new for Kudos for 2009? There will be some new products and ideas launched at Kudos for the coming year and a lot of ideas will be inspired from Nigel’s visit to Las Vegas when he attended a Redken National Symposium. Ten thousand hairdressers gathered together to share ideas and new concepts. Clients can also expect to see a new environmentally friendly product that delivers fantastic results and gives a money back guarantee if you’re not satisfied. Also, new spaces will be created for these exciting new ideas. What trends can we expect in 2009 for women? Extreme is the new ‘in’ word. Extreme length, extremely short, extremely curly, extremely sexual – dishevelled tresses creating a messy, chic look, created by twisting and naturally drying hair. Wet hair is sleeked for a clean finish or for up-do’s look at off set chignons, high flicked fringes, and dishevelled pinned up hair, roughed up buns. Clean looking ponytails will be a good look for the summer. And for him? Short, sharp clean edges with more length on top, which is straightened and worn tall. Hair is quiffed by turning the mini irons towards the tip of the fringe. We could also see the return of the flat top shape and forms of wedges.
How do we achieve extreme hair lengths? For extreme lengths after the short bob, look towards Great Lengths. Great Lengths are the ultimate in glamour. Not only is the hair 100% human hair remis, but each extension can be ethically traced and is of the highest quality. The hair ranges in length, colour and texture, meaning you can choose to have lots of air pressure hair throughout the whole of your head, up to 60cm systems for extreme lengths, following celebrities Katie Price or Cheryl Cole. You can opt to flash the colours, with bold contrast, using either our hot and cold fusion machine or our air pressure machine. Great Lengths have an added bonus as you can choose between two different application techniques depending on your hair needs. Either way Great Lengths can really work for you. What are the hot colours for 2009? We will see brunette bases with golden highlights, creating a darker root area. Ebony colour will be strong again, as will be the use of red. Summer always sees a move towards lighter hair colour, using several shades to create multi tones. We are seeing low maintenance colour techniques becoming popular to allow for flexible timescales in between salon visits. Also you’ll be able to see the launch of our new Redken Blonde Glam Highlift Colour Service. What’s the vibe in Pontyclun? The regeneration of Pontyclun continues with the opening of new businesses and the improvement of existing ones. It is a thoroughfare through to the Vale of Glamorgan and beyond, so we are seeing a lot more people stopping and using the local facilities. ❧ 28 ❧
I hear that Kudos are involved in competitions, please tell us more We hope to have an active year in competition work. We have just sent a photo image for one particular styling competition and will shortly enter a Redken competition. Popular stylist Craig is also currently in the semi finals of Head and Shoulders’ Nation’s Favourite Hairdresser Award. Some of our young creative members will be entering the Cymru ISA competition in May. Why did you choose Alice as your model for the Vale Life cover girl? Alice’s mum has been a good client of Kudos for several years, so it was fitting that her daughter was used for the front cover look. The long hair is definitely a strong theme for 2009, complimented by contrasting tones, bringing life and movement to the hair. Tell us about your featured product range Elemis is our exclusive spa product range, offering body treatments for rejuvenation and a wide selection of anti-ageing services and products. These have become a firm favourite with our clients. We are currently offering a 10% discount on all our Elemis homecare products and discounted packages on all of our services. Please quote Vale Life to receive these discounts. What are your hopes for 2009? ■ Steady business ■ Growth of our specialist services ■ Success with our new product range ■ Enjoy work as much as ever ■ Meet new people within the industry and re-acquaint with old friends. Vale Life spent an enjoyable afternoon in the company of Matt Powell, Head Chef at La Plie in Southerndown, foraging at one of his secret locations in the Vale.
RECIPE FOR SUCCESS What is your background? I learnt my trade as an apprentice to Raymond Blanc, then graduated to other French haute cuisine establishments in the Netherlands and UK. I think my obsession with food helps though! What is your cooking style? The cooking style often matches several elements; we try to stick to French classical techniques as much as we can. We do use a waterbath for our slow braises which just improves the tastes. Our passion is for food to taste how it is meant to. Fresh bread is made twice a day and we make all our fruit reductions ourselves. Turkish delights have become a new petit four now. Where do you source your ingredients? I am a keen forager. I am always looking for interesting wild foods on the shore and inland. As much as possible I use local sources for my ingredients, especially for meats, vegetables and dairy produce. Locally, our suppliers are Ton Farm Vegetables, Merthyr Mawr and Oaklands Oganics of Cowbridge. We also use Slade Farm, that is just a stone’s throw away from the restaurant for mutton and lamb whenever we can. We use E. Ashtons, Fishmonger of Cardiff and Douglas Willis Butchers in Cwmbran. Less locally, I use Charlie Hicks Greengrocer, of Hay on Wye, in my opinion a purveyor of the best fruit and vegetables in the world. We also buy from Keltic Seafare of Dingwall, Ross Shire, Highland Game of Dundee and Tanner’s Wines of Shrewsbury. We source organic rose veal in from Alternative Meats in Shropshire.
“I am a keen forager. I’m always looking for interesting wild foods on the shore and inland.”
What might we expect on your Spring menu? Our menus are uploaded onto our website at www.laplierestaurant but typically our spring lunchtime menu will consist of dishes like slow cooked Usk Valley lamb breast, female fennel, pistachios and lamb juices or red gurnard (an extremely underrated fish!), mussel poêlée, sea lettuce and saffron mussel sauce. Blood oranges are very good now - we use the whole fruit to create, in effect, a de-constructed Turkish orange salad but put back together as an iced mousse, a reduction of the juices, with a jelly sweetened tea created from the rind to flavour it and also a confit, which we cook in a water bath for two days, adding a real zing to the dish. Our dinner menu consists of dishes like Scottish diver picked scallops, slow cooked carrot puree, lotus root and ginger crème, or rose veal fillet with baby onion and veal sweetbread blanquette, pommes maxims, roasted cepe and veal jus. Desserts follow suit such as Oldroyds Yorkshire forced rhubarb pannacotta, rhubarb sherbet, and sorbet and crisps. What are your hopes for the future at La Plie? We want to keep our customers happy and to make it more comfortable and more of an experience than simply a meal. I think if we keep cooking from the heart, then the accolades we want will come. We have just re-decorated our downstairs dining room. There are only four tables of two, so the atmosphere is very intimate. It takes us up to twenty six covers which is large enough for the type of food we eventually want to progress to. We also want to use the room for private dining for up to ten people. The plan, this year, is to employ another member of staff in the kitchen and front of house.

Matt Powell’s guide to seaweeds Sea lettuce Sea lettuce is abundant around Britain and grows where nutrients are high. It contains most of the B vitamins and is even believed to reduce blood pressure. We butter it, deep fry it or steam/roast our fish over it. Laver Does the Welsh ‘caviar’ need any introduction! It is purple to brown in colour and found along the Welsh coast. It has high iodine content and works well with most seafood. It is the same as the Japanese nori seaweed. Dulse Dulse is a vivid purple and is high in all elements and minerals. It can be dried or it can be fried with butter or, as we do, it can be usedto steam/roast fish on. Carrageen/Irish moss Carrageen was traditionally used in Ireland as a medicine. It is apparently a natural E number. It has quite a peppery taste in its raw state. Note: All seaweeds are washed scrupulously and lightly salted before use.

There’s no getting away from it, people judge people by appearances. We all have something about our bodies that we’re not entirely happy with but we’ve learned over the years how to work with what we’ve got. No-one can empathise more with this than style and image consultant, Suzanne Jaya. She talks to Vale Life about her passion for fashion, body issues and zest for life.
LIFE LAUNDRY What were your early style influences? 1950’s movies, my mum’s Vogue magazines and, bizarrely, when I was very young I used to draw pictures of Medieval and Tudor period costumes. I must be reincarnated from back then.
Who are your style icons? My parents – both my sister and I got our fashion-sense from them. My father and mother were very glamorous. My mum was always on-trend but not a fashion victim. She always looked classy. I still remember her white kinky boots that she wore in the early ‘70’s! Even in illness prior to his death, my dad always took pride in his appearance and even now my mum never fails to find a shop window to glance into – my three year old niece is beginning to take after her and my sister is very much a yummy mummy who always takes time to put on her lipstick and a smile. How would you describe your own style? Created - not bought and a bit eclectic. I’m Anglo-Indian, so the Indian side of me really gets drawn to all sorts of embellishments, beads, sparkles and bold colour. I love mixing colours, textures and pieces together.
There’s a bit of the Boho Bollywood in me but I execute it with a Western approach. I love wearing bindis on my forehead to parties and once spent the whole night on my hands and knees because it fell off and it was my favourite. Needless to say it found its way through the crack in a floorboard never to be seen again! For work I play this side down, particularly when dealing with business clients. My style still has some dramatic details but with a more European approach. What are your signature accessories? I love hats; also scarves of every shape, size, texture and colour. What’s your one indulgence? Regular hairdos because I have wild curly hair which although I love, needs a bit of control and I’ve always got better things to do with my time and energy. Greatest passions Food, family and friends in that order.
Tell us your best kept beauty secret. It’s a secret! No, really it’s ritual, ritual and ritual. When my sister and I were young, our mum drummed into our heads the importance of a good skincare routine. We’ve always followed it and so far it’s paid off. It doesn’t always have to be expensive I used to make face masks out of store cupboard items as a child and still do today. I always seek out products that use no synthesised chemicals or preservatives and a high content of botanical ingredients.
“I love hats; also scarves of every shape, size, texture and colour.” ❧ 32 ❧
Embarrassing style moment I was rushed to hospital in an ambulance during a long period of serious ill-health. A couple of hours before being taken ill, I’d smothered my hair in coconut oil to condition it. I ended up being taken to intensive care before having a chance to wash it off. It sounds so vain, but even though I was ill I kept really fretting about it!
What would you take onto a desert island? Something alluring to attract a passing sailor to rescue me. Favourite places? London because I spent so much time living and working there – I still love the buzz of the big city. In complete contrast Cornwall where my family now live and it’s the only time I mange to really dress down and get away with it. Wales, of course because it’s where I was born and bred and I love the landscape. Australia because I connect with it on some deeper level and finally India for all its chaos, colour and people. Told you I was a bit eclectic! What can’t you live without? ■ Neal’s Yard Remedies Frankincense Nourishing Cream ■ Perfume by Creed ■ Loads of water ■ Books What could you live without? Handbags. As gorgeous as they are, I feel totally encumbered with one and am liberated each time I leave the house without it. What are your biggest bugbears? We live in too much of a throwaway society so I guess it’s the ‘new money’ mentality – those who know the price of everything and value of nothing. The computer saying ‘No’.
Favourite designer? I don’t really have a favourite, nor am I a slave to top end designer labels. However, I have some pieces from Scandinavian designers such as Malene Birger, Day, Birger et Mikklesen and labels such as Noa Noa. Karen Millen and Zara have pieces that make me feel curvier and fit my frame perfectly. Some of my favourite styles of clothes are only seen in Asian magazines so I tend to admire them from afar. If money were no object… I’d have all my clothes bespoke made by Phillipa, a designer in Monmouth she’s amazing. Have you ever made any fashion faux pas? The whole of the 1980’s I reckon! Actually I remember once going to a medical conference with my father. One particular day, I stepped out with him in a posh frock with a donkey jacket over it. I was about seventeen at the time. He was horrified, so much so that he took me straight to Howells department store in Cardiff, bought me a brand new coat and then we went off to the function. He told me that I looked like I was wearing a coal miner’s jacket! Favourite shops? Too many to mention this time, but anywhere unusual, cosy, friendly and with nooks and crannies, or with an opulent boudoir kind of feel to it. I love shopping in Havana in Cowbridge Bryl’s Boutique in Barry and Pink Zebra in Llantrisant Old Town for their fabulous pieces, value for money and excellent customer service.
“I want people to look and feel the business!”
What style advice have your parents given you? My dad always said that a woman who leaves a little to the imagination is far sexier than one who flaunts it. He said he preferred a glimpse of a slim ankle or something backless rather than frontless so to speak. My mum always notices men’s shoes and my sister and I have developed that same eye for detail. She has brought us up to never let ourselves go and even if we have only a penny in our pocket to keep ourselves tidy enough that we look like we’ve got much more. I think that comes from her experiences post War where people took pride in themselves but were going through an economic crisis. Also, that style is not just about how we look, it’s also how we conduct ourselves – it’s all in the detail and gestures. Just one thoughtful act can add to the style factor. We notice that you use two names Yes, I’ve always loved my Indian middle name Jaya, which means Victory. My family surname Raghavan has been the inspiration for a doctor’s character in the Welsh sitcom High Hopes. The character is based on my father which is quite amusing. Suzanne Jaya has stuck with people because they find my last name unpronounceable and as my dad has posthumously found fame on TV I’ve continued using Jaya in my business name. Funniest moment with a client? I was out shopping one day with a male client. He was sneakily checking himself out in a mirror as we left a shoe shop and had failed to see the pile of shoe boxes in his way. Needless to say he went flying, bumped into a pillar and a passing sales assistant. He knows who he is! ❧ 34 ❧
Any advice for young people? Play with your style – it’s the only time that you can rebel a bit and experiment. Creative expression is natural – there’ll be plenty of time to get sensible about clothes when you start work. What’s your take on modern day fashion? Really, designers just rehash the best bits of 20th century trends. The only difference between the industry now and since the mid 20th century is the cutting edge technology available to make clothes more comfortable. Fashion isn’t as iconic nowadays; Nothing mind-blowing has happened since the padded shoulders of the 1980’s and I can’t imagine what will be remembered in the same way that the mini skirt is for the 1960’s What type of clients look for you? Anyone who needs to redefine themselves or has lost touch with their sense of style or has got into a fashion rut. In particular those people who put others first and believe that they are not worthy of looking their absolute best. Style is so subjective because it is creative, but there is a science behind it too in terms of adapting fabric, cuts and designs to an individual body type. There are some hard and fast rules too, particularly in the business/corporate sector where professional wear still needs to reflect industry traditions. I love the way that some simple changes can increase a client’s confidence to the extent that they get a new job, profit their business, a relationship or even rekindle the flames of an existing one. Basically, I just want people to look and feel the business!
But aren’t personal style and image consultants just for the rich and famous? Absolutely not. Why should they be the only ones who get to look good! We might not all get to be seen on TV or in the media, but every single one of us has to get up each day and put in an appearance somewhere, do a job and put our face in front of dozens of people. Hiring a stylist is just about using another person’s skills to achieve your aims. It’s perceived as expensive because of all the celebrity endorsements, but actually I deal with many clients on a piecemeal basis – you can’t create a new person overnight – effective style has to evolve over a period of time and each client has to embrace it as their own. Do you have any famous clients? Can’t say - client confidentiality etc.
You mentioned that you had been ill for some time – is it something you want to share with us? I don’t mind sharing if it helps others, although it’s probably a story within its own right. I was born with major heart defects – congenital heart disease. This condition affects about one in a hundred babies. Surgeons were only just pioneering surgical and medical solutions for this when I was young and many patients didn’t survive. Apparently I’m lucky to have got this far. I’ve had my fair share of cardiac surgery and procedures, have been hospitalised for many months over the years and have had some very dicey moments. Ultimately we learn at a very young age to live with the disease. It hasn’t been an easy ride for either me or my family. Support and help from outside the family hasn’t been forthcoming – we’ve had to find it and fight for it and generally keep knocking on doors and be persistent. It’s because as a group of cardiac patients, our disease falls outside of the norm which is why it is a specialist branch of cardiac medicine. Most people have heard of coronary artery disease or bypass surgery but being born with heart disease is a different kettle of fish, as we have other complications to consider. A charitable patient association called GUCH (Grown Up Congenital Hearts) offers fantastic support at all levels for its patients and the carers and families of those patients. They have been an invaluable resource and comfort to me over the years.
“Play with your style – rebel a bit and experiment. Creative expression is natural.” ❧ 35 ❧
The past ten years have been some of the most challenging of my life but it has made me more determined to do only work that I love, create balance in my life, put my health first and help people to reach their full potential. Being self-employed allows me to be flexible with my working hours and if I’m having a particularly bad health day then I can just stay home in my pyjamas and no-one knows any different. What’s your tip for survival? Have a sense of humour - some of my funniest moments have been borne out of the most dire and fearful situations. Realise that self-confidence is not narcissistic – it’s best to hang out with people who are upbeat, positive and genuine as anything else is just draining on our energy. Recognise that giving-in to illness is sometimes the most practical and deserving thing you can do – we all need a rest now and then, so don’t let others make you feel guilty for it. Finally, support your local community – it’s the only way any of us are going to survive anything. If you’re looking for gifts, collectibles and items of pure gorgeousness for the home, Melanie James’ beautiful shop in Cowbridge is a must. Step inside and discover...
THE LINEN CUPBOARD When did you first open? September 2005.
Who are your customers? Our customers are varied from lovely ladies in their 80’s to yummy mummies and sophisticated teens - all wonderful and 100% feminine. Then there are the fab chaps who come in looking for a gift for the ladies in their lives. Whether it is for their wife, mum, sister or a female member of the team at work. There is always someone on hand at The Linen Cupboard to offer friendly advice and assistance. Are your customers local? Our customers come from as little as 150 yards up the road to anywhere along the M4 corridor. I have regulars from Swansea, Cardiff, Newport, Cheltenham, Bath, even London and as far away as Ireland. What do you think is so special about The Linen Cupboard? There are many things that make The Linen Cupboard really special. You only have to walk through the door to know that you have discovered a spa for the senses. From the Lexington bedding, antique American patchwork quilts, Jan Constantine cushions and wall hangings to all the gorgeous Cath Kidston products. She has an amazing way of producing modern vintage and items for all budgets, even if it’s just a treat for yourself. The list goes on and on.
Then there is, of course, Stella the shop dog and official mascot. A Pettie Basset Griffon Vendeen, also know as ‘the happy hound’ in the dog world. People come in to the shop just to see her because she is so wonderful. I have considered giving Stella her very own page on Facebook! She sleeps most of the day but if I’ve been to the butchers she will follow me around the shop and rummage through the shopping if I leave it unattended. Everyone loves her! Why do you think customers shop at The Linen Cupboard? Again, there are so many reasons. I think the shop has built up quite a creditable reputation over the four years that we have been there for being different. A wonderful emporium... country chic at its best. Someone once said, “walking into the Linen Cupboard was like getting a big hug from your mum.” I know what she means. It’s a lovely shop. What makes it so special is a bit of everything I suppose.
Any recent developments? There’s always something new at The Linen Cupboard. If you’ve not been in for a while you will be delighted to find I’ve added a Tea Shop serving homemade cakes, scones and refreshing tea or coffe, all served on vintage miss matched china and silver tea pots. It has taken months to collect all the china and teapots but there’s nothing better than drinking out of a fine china teacup. The china has been so popular that I’ve been asked if I’ll hire it out for christenings and weddings. I’m looking into it so watch this space. To all of you knitters and sewers out there, you might be interested to know that we now hold a sewing circle at the Tea Shop. Tuesday and Wednesday mornings 10am -12 noon. It’s great fun, all girls together chatting over a cup of coffee or tea with knitting or sewing in hand. There’s no charge for the morning all I ask is that you arrive with enough room in your tummy, for a slice of cake or scone and a cup of coffee. Space is limited, so if you are interested in making new friends and enjoy some form of needlework, please contact the shop and let me know what day you would like to attend. We have had loads of new things in over the last few weeks, the shop is brimming over with loveliness. I’m so excited to be launching the Cath Kidston Jewellery. Stunning and based on some of her own vintage pieces, all designed and hand finished in the UK. Only available in Wales from The Linen Cupboard.

PENARTH
Getting in shape is as easy as ABC With summer approaching, our thoughts naturally turn to holidays and that all important swimsuit... THE HORROR! Somehow that over-indulgent Christmas has left us with half a stone or more of uninvited body mass. For some, a simple diet of air and water usually does the trick. However, we’re not all that lucky. For the rest of us more drastic action is required which means regular trips to a gym. If you’re fortunate enough to live near Penarth, then you could enlist the services of personal trainer, Neil Munn. Neil runs Penarth ABC from St. Paul’s Church, so if you’re looking for a trainer that delivers results, then Neil is your man. At this point, I feel it is appropriate to warn you that Neil doesn’t suffer fools, so be prepared for a little blood, lots of sweat and, in my experience, a few tears. The road to perfection is not easily travelled, but of all the gyms I have been to over the years, this one certainly delivers.

At the Peak of good health New Chiropractic Clinic strives to get your body working at its best. At Peak Chiropractic clinic, opening at the beginning of March in Porthcawl, the focus is on making regular treatment an affordable lifestyle choice, as much a part of your routine as exercise and healthy eating should be. Dr Rhys Breckon DC, 29, has a refreshing approach to Chiropractic treatment, drawing on his experience of observing wellness-based clinics in Australia, and working at a top clinic on Harley Street, London. Maintaining a healthy nervous system is fundamental to a well functioning body, yet it is an area of healthcare sorely neglected by general medicine. It can make an enormous difference to both physical and mental performance, injury rehabilitation and disease prevention, in people of all ages. It is a common misconception that you simply go to a Chiropractor if you have a bad back, but few realise it can significantly help with ailments ranging from headaches to period pain, asthma
and bedwetting in children, and even maintaining the body’s alignment during pregnancy. At Peak Chiropractic, a free advisory consultation is available to all patients, worth £25. If further treatment is recommended, Dr Breckon will work with you to put together an affordable treatment plan specific to your needs and lifestyle. With flexible opening hours including early morning and weekend appointments, and ample parking right outside, the clinic is a great place to start getting your body working at its best.

Looking for a new wardrobe for this season but don’t have the time or inclination to trudge the shops? Bryl’s Boutique on Barry’s High Street is the answer to all your prayers.
THE CHIC OF IT! If you love fashion as much as I do, you’ll probably find that you’ll walk into a certain boutique and you’ll want everything on the rails. I often wonder if this is pure coincidence but, after a chat with Ann Bryl, owner of Bryl’s Boutique in Barry, I now know that stocking the right labels goes much deeper than this. Here, Ann shares with us the reason why her brands ring true.
Why French Connection? French Connection never fails to keep the brand exciting and original, pushing boundaries and always making a statement. The key to their success continues to be the combination of exceptional clothes at the forefront of design, at affordable prices. How about Sandwich? Sandwich is a label with Scandinavian origin. This brand is a casual but modern range, great for women of all ages and uses fabrics with lots of natural fibres. They offer stylish clothes with added detail for a more interesting look to your day-to-day wear and keep surprising us every season by adding some striking pieces to their collection. Whilst Sandwich clothing is great for basics, you will also find some statement pieces for special occasions. And Nougat? Nougat is a particular favourite of mine and many of my customers. Nougat has built its reputation on designing and producing eminently feminine clothes including knitwear, skirts, dresses and accessories. Nougat London’s signature styles are clothes that have a luxurious vintage feel with great attention paid to the exquisite detailing using beads, sequins, ribbons and trims.
Nougat’s spring/summer season is a striking collection, bursting with rich, vibrant colours such as coral, cerise pink and cobalt blue. This exotic and ethnic collection moves fluidly from the sophistication of 1960’s Riviera through to a definitive nod to the 1970’s global hippy, in anticipation of a long, hot and earthy summer. Who favours the Religion brand? As Religion is all about irreverence and attitude, with its trademark destroyed t-shirts and graphic prints, the customers who are drawn to this collection like the funky and individual look. Among its celebrity followers are Pussycat Dolls, Girls Aloud, Kate Moss and Kylie Minogue.
You also introduced Ugg Australia last year. Are they proving popular? Yes, this brand is going amazingly well. The boots are perfect for both spring and summer as you can wear them with dresses and skirts in warmer weather and jeans when it’s cooler. I’m looking forward to the new range of casual flip flops and sandals which are particularly comfortable as you’d expect from Ugg, and right on trend. You also stock a range of accessories, tell me about these? Yes, we have a great range of bags from Nougat, Suzy Smith and French Connection. To complete any outfit, we also have beautiful pieces of jewellery in silver and semi precious stones by local designer Melinda Mulcahy and also jewellery by Bibi.
And what about Great Plains? Great Plains are fabulous for affordable wardrobe staples with essentials for layering throughout the season. T-shirts, vests, camisoles and three quarter length sleeve tops are available in every colour from natural hues to brights. There’s no brand better for jersey fabrics and linens. Their wrap dress with frill edge is both elegant and versatile and is already proving a hit in the shop.
“I’m introducing Darling, which has been exceptionally popular with celebrities.” ❧ 42 ❧
Sunburst dress from French Connection
What brands do you stock? Quite simply, over the years I have chosen clothes which I love to wear myself. Bryl’s has an amazing range of clothing from French Connection, Nougat, Great Plains, Sandwich, Chilli Pepper and Religion. I stock sizes ranging from 8 to 18 and as I have come to know my customers well I know exactly what they want to wear.
Any new brands on the horizon? Yes, I’m introducing Darling, which has been exceptionally popular with celebrities. Darling is a feminine range with party classics. It’s unmistakably individual with a vintage twist with ravishing jewel-coloured fabrics, inspired designs, exquisite details and sumptuous quality.

Look and feel good this season with Beauty Spot Our photoshoots wouldn’t be complete without the excellent make up skills of Amanda Morgan of The Beauty Spot in Barry. Here Amanda gives us the lowdown on how to look absolutely fabulous this spring/summer. If the festive season has left you feeling drab and in need of revival, or your starting to panic about a special occasion, I have a few suggestions that will get you ready for the spring and summer months. Pale dry skin will be crying out for moisture, so book a full body polish followed by a nourishing massage to boost the circulation. Try a facial peel, then a moisture surge mask for a radiant glow. Take home a St Tropez every day tinted moisturiser to keep up the good work and give a pre summer healthy glow.
How about trimming off the dead ends and giving your hair a peppermint mask or an aromatherapy scalp massage. You could even try a new hairstyle or a change of colour – ask our team for a free consultation. Have you ever considered a more permanent change like some Botox, line fillers or even semi permanent makeup for smudge free holiday eyes, brows and lips? Manicures and pedicures are always an essential for the ‘well groomed’ look. Weaker nails can benefit from regular nurturing or nail enhancements for total perfection. Eyebrows cannot be ignored as they are the frame of our eyes and a quick and cheap way to give us an instant lift. Why not try tinting and semi permanent makeup if they are a little sparse? We can offer brides a tailor-made package to include a picture perfect makeup at home on their special day.
A popular choice at this time of year is a pamper day which includes a light lunch and ready to go top-to-toe revival treatments. Whether you are a bride or mum-to-be this season or you have a special holiday or celebration where you’d like to shine, visit us at The Beauty Spot for ultimate fabulosity! High Street fashion at Bryl’s Boutique I don’t know how other ladies organize their seasonal wardrobes, but I always have a good sort out at this time of the year. The clothes that I no longer wear, fit into, have got bored with are bagged and taken to a local charity shop. The rest go in another wardrobe ready for their next outing. The excitement then builds for when I get to shop for top ups. Yes the budget is a bit sorry this year but I think I’m with most women here in buying less but concentrating on quality. One shop I’ll be heading to this season is Bryl’s Boutique in Barry. I’ve known owner Ann for some years now and she always seems to stock the very clothing that I love. I’ve got my eye on a few pieces from French Connection but I’m seriously loving the new season’s range by Nougat. Their clothing is always well made, very feminine and flattering for most shapes and age groups. Look out Ann, here I come! “It is an amazing feeling working with glass to produce these stylish modern pieces, each extremely unique and with its own individual style and identity. The styles cannot be reproduced, just like art or a painting. No two pieces are ever the same,” says Nanor. “When my fused glass pieces are ‘born’ each piece gives me the strength and the hope of life that is unknown. I feel my pieces transfer this positive energy to the people who appreciate and own my work.” PENARTH
To quote one of her customers, “Your pieces take the shape and colour of my soul as I wear them. It gives me natural energy which is transposed to the viewer becoming a conversation piece. For your chance of winning two of Nanor’s stunning necklaces, please see page 40.
Her work combines with three dimensional forms of art and she works with glass that allows her to feel and see her pieces from every angle bringing light, colour and life. Her first work with glass was to create pieces in stained glass but she wanted to design something different that she could wear, admire and share with other people. Glass fusing allows her to combine many forms of art by fusing, slumping and giving shapes.

With summer just around the corner, this is usually the time when an invitation to a wedding or special occasion lands on the doormat. If you’re very lucky you may have a cruise planned and if you do then you’re going to need a glamorous wardrobe.
KATWALK HEAVEN Taking the hassle and excessive expense out of the equation, this appointment only service will prove an absolute godsend for those in search of that ‘stand out from the crowd’ ensemble. Katwalk owner, Helen Pick, talks to Vale Life. What is Katwalk? It’s a unique shopping experience that provides the personal attention that a customer deserves. Set in a stunning location within two acres of landscaped gardens, my customers are able to browse at their leisure. Help is at hand for those who need it and no-one is ever pressured to buy. There’s nothing worse than trying on clothes in a cramped, stuffy changing room with unflattering mirrors, so I make sure that this is an enjoyable experience. What brands do you stock? Mother of the bride, guest, prom wear, cruise wear, including John Charles, Dusk, Frank Usher, James Lakeland casual wear, glamourous dresses from the Catwalk Collection, London and a range of basques with Svarovski crystals, Red Carpet designs including a replica of J Lo’s white dress and many more. I’m proud to be the only stockist in south Wales of the Paparazzi clothing range which provides Hollywood glamour and sultry appeal in hot colours, sexy cuts and sleek fabric for the woman who wants to stand out from the crowd. We also have shoes to match to add that finishing touch.
Do you offer accessories? Yes, we offer Suzy Smith bags, evening bags, jewellery and scarves.
Who are your customers? They are usually in their mid twenties upwards. Some come to me for a mother of the bride outfit and then keep coming back for their casual wear. Why do they choose you? I provide a personal service without the hard sell. I want my customers to enjoy themselves without being pressured and hopefully they’ll recommend me to their friends and come back in the hope that there will be something that they like – and there usually is! Most of my business comes from personal recommendation which pleases me, as this shows I’m doing something right! I always make sure that no one else will be wearing the same dress to the wedding or prom and make a note of the function and what people have bought to avoid this happening. I want people to leave feeling relaxed and happy with what they’ve purchased.
How did you get into this business? I’ve always loved fashion but found that most shops I visited told me everything looked lovely on me, even when they clearly didn’t. I often put my trust in the staff and invariably came home and thought “why did I buy this?” As a lot of boutiques didn’t offer refunds I had cupboards full of clothes I didn’t wear so their lack of honesty cost me dearly. I find that customers like my honest approach. I also like to go on cruises so have a passion for evening wear. I have a lot of ladies who visit me specifically to stock up on fabulous cruise wear. Where does Katwalk go from here? In the time that Katwalk has been in existence, I’ve met many customers who have now become friends. As a people person, I’m providing a service that customers want but I also enjoy the fact that my customers keep coming back. For the future I hope to see Katwalk expanding into menswear.
There is a large car parking area for groups of friends. I have many customers who arrive in groups as this makes for a good night out. What woman doesn’t enjoy trying on clothes! What do you think sets you apart? Katwalk offers an appointment only, confidential service. Prices are competitive and I spend as much time as the customer wants to get the look absolutely right. There’s no hard sell just friendly, honest, approachable service. I want customers to only buy what looks stunning and suits the individual. What I offer is quality, individual garments that are affordable. ❧ 46 ❧

There was an excellent address by Dan Clayton-Jones, leader of the Heritage lottery fund for Wales and executive of the National Lottery Heritage Fund, who spoke on local history and heritage and it’s importance for tourism. Incidentally, did you know that Beaupre Castle was the venue for King John and his entourage for two weeks, whilst they hammered out the creation of the Magna Carta. From there they went to Runneymede for the signing.

Rebranding could be the key to success One of the things many successful businesses do when times are tough is to get themselves talked about.

One of the best ways to create a buzz about your business is to change the way it looks. Mark Roberts, from Rhoose, has over thirty years experience in branding and logo design. Mark says, “This is the perfect climate for rebranding. Many businesses are apathetic at the moment, so the ones that are rebranding can often gain a big advantage. You really notice the new or updated shop fronts in a recession. A new look says you’re moving forward it’s confident and that attitude instills confidence in customers. The green shoots of recovery may be small but I’ve had a big increase in enquiries and business since Christmas. It seems business people have finally stopped treading water and are starting to swim.”

Recession depression? Get a new lease of life! The worsening recession has put the brakes on new car sales. Vehicle transporters groan under the weight of unsold cars, car manufacturers’ production lines are in darkness, the workers have all gone home. The government pouring money into the industry is like pouring water into a sieve! If you think that’s bad news, it gets worse! The true cost of running your car or van is climbing... why? Because that gleaming car on your drive is losing money faster than RBS! So what is the true cost of running your family car? Well, there’s the obvious purchase price, fuel costs, maintenance costs, insurance for a start but, more significantly than ever before, there’s the resale value or RV (residual value). If you own a Saab, you have my sympathy. A friend of mine from Barry bought a beautiful Saab convertible with 16,000 miles on it just over a year ago for £17,500. One year and 6,000 miles later, the best she can get for it is £7,500. That’s £1.60 a mile on depreciation only!
“Leasing a vehicle makes perfect sense during the current economic conditions. Leasing provides you with fixed monthly costs and protection from falling vehicle values.” Glen Newman, owner of Purple Contracts
Now, the good news. There’s never been a better time to lease a car. Manufacturers are bending over backwards to shift their stock-piles and they have two methods of disposal: Big discounts. Looks like the most obvious route, but the manufacturers know that heavily discounted new cars mean that used values get slashed too. Very bad news… remember what happened to Rover? Leasing Company Bonuses. The manufacturers offer the incentives to leasing companies in a manner similar to cashbacks. So, the leasing company pays the higher price for a car, but gets a massive cashback for doing so. The end result is the same as discounting, but without stressing residual values. In this economic climate everyone needs to find a way of saving a few quid. If you’re a business user you will need to include accurate transportation costs in your forecasting. Even if you’re not in business you need to budget. For instance, a new model Ford Fiesta 1.25i 3 door Style Plus would cost about £11,000 from a dealer. With a bit of haggling you might get it down to £10,000 to buy it outright. If you borrowed that sum using a personal loan from any of the High Street lenders the monthly repayments would be approximately £319. A three year lease from Purple in Barry would cost around £150 plus VAT per month, with their new No Deposit option. That’s equivalent to 18p per mile! This allows you to drive 10,000 miles per year. Contract Hire (or Personal Contract Hire) is the ONLY way to guarantee the running cost, and the true cost, of running a vehicle. The monthly cost is fixed... you will never pay any more, or less, than the monthly cost of the contract. Stephen Paul, Sales Manager at Purple Contracts said, “No more queueing at the Post Office... there is no need to tax the vehicle - we do it for you, for the whole term of the lease! If you choose the optional maintenance pack we even service it for you (which includes a full valet!) and we’ll include unlimited tyres. ❧ 50 ❧
You’ll never need to worry about selling your car or its future value. At the end of the contract, we will come and get the old one and replace it with a new one, if you wish.” Tim Ranson, heating engineer and owner of ABR Heat Team in Cardiff was fed up losing so much money when he came to sell his vans. It cost a fortune to advertise them and he would take calls from timewasters and agencies. Not any more. Mr Ranson now leases his vans from Purple Contracts, he pays £159 plus VAT per month for each of his VW Transporters. Best of all, at the end of the lease a delivery lorry turns up with his new vehicle and takes away the old one. Although Mr Ranson is delighted to be saving around £1000 a year per vehicle, for him the main advantage is the convenience. Glen Newman, owner of Purple Contracts said, “Leasing a vehicle makes perfect sense during the current economic conditions. Leasing provides you with fixed monthly costs and protection from falling vehicle values. Be careful, when comparing lease quotes. Make sure you are comparing like-for-like, as many leasing companies will not advertise the fact that they charge a hefty Documentation Fee, or an Administration Fee.
If you’re after a personal lease, make sure you budget for the cost of the VAT, as most lease quotes are displayed VAT exclusive. Excess mileage charges are not the nightmare they used to be either. Our Fiesta deal (above) has an excess mileage of 5.2 pence per mile, so every thousand miles you go over contract will cost you £55... that’s the cheapest 1000 miles you’ll ever do!” Lease your next car and you will never buy another car again! The Business Centre networks with BNI
Recession fear increases use of serviced offices
The Vale of Glamorgan’s BNI Victory Chapter is now holding its weekly networking breakfast in their conference room every Thursday morning from 6.30 am.
With the financial markets suffering from the fall out from the credit crunch and with growing acceptance that 2009 will be tough for all sectors, some businesses in the Vale of Glamorgan are taking precautions to ensure they can minimise exposure to risk where they can.
BNI is a 24 year old business and professional organisation that allows only one person from each trade or profession to join a chapter. With over 5,291 active chapters, and 111,733 members, it is the world’s most successful business referral organisation. If you would like to attend one of these meetings held at The Business Centre please contact Lynnette Knight on 01446 739911 or email lynnette@thebusinesscentreonline.co.uk
Taking out traditional ten, fifteen or twenty year leases does not allow you much flexibility, which is why so many companies are looking to a more flexible and risk adverse route. In addition, from April 2008 companies had the added motivation to avoid having unused office space on their books as they now have to pay full business rates on office space left empty for more than three months. One way they can avoid this is to operate their business from The Business Centre in Barry as they can expand and contract to reflect market conditions. ❧ 51 ❧

One company that did just this is Purple Contracts. Owner, Glen Newman said, “We wanted to take some new staff on in January, but our office was too small to accommodate them. No problem… we simply moved to a slightly larger office in The Business Centre. Then, if our situation changes again and we need to downsize, we’ll just move to a smaller one. It means we are only ever paying for the exact size of office that we need. Brilliant!” The Business Centre is an ideal option. Low move-in costs, short lead times and access to the latest specification IT and telecoms equipment and services, which can be rented by the week with no capital outlay. Jo Blakeney-Edwards and Simon remember their wedding evening at the hotel.
“We held the evening reception of our wedding at the West House Country Hotel as we could book the whole venue for our special event. It had a lovely feel to it, with lots of different rooms/spaces to accommodate the different needs of our guests, and Richard was very helpful and flexible with our requirements. We had 130 guests and it was really important to us that the food was excellent, which it was. We had a meeting with Andrew, the chef, requesting something a little different from the norm for our evening buffet. He came up with a very modern, inventive menu based around tapas and mediterranean type dishes and we were really happy to have had so many compliments on the food from our guests. The service was also excellent. This was the second marriage for both of us, so we had some quite individual requirements from the menu, to the music. They were extremely accommodating and open to our suggestions, plus they helped us with all the extra touches. We provided the band, and used the hotel’s disco. The event went without a hitch and I would definitely recommend the hotel to friends. It was certainly the most memorable evening of our lives.” The West House Country Hotel West Street, Llantwit Major Vale of Glamorgan CF61 1SP 01446 792406 enq@westhouse-hotel.co.uk www.westhouse-hotel.co.uk

Found the right man to marry. Check. Found the perfect venue to hold your reception. Check. Now, how do you choose the right marquee company to make your preparations complete? We asked Zoe Nelson, an event coordinator based in London why she and her fiancé James chose County Marquees to make her wedding day complete. What was your brief? We wanted a romantic, country garden marquee with an element of glamour and sparkle in the evening. The private grounds at Llansannor House are truly beautiful and we wanted the marquee to complement the scenery and the lakeside setting. The marquee had to cater for 200 guests with ample room for plenty of entertainment such as a casino and a large enough stage and dancefloor area for a twelve piece live band in the evening! We felt it was essential for the marquee to include everything in one area incase of a typical british wet summers day so County Marquees designed a perfect layout where even if the weather turned for the worst, our guests would stay dry! We can wholeheartedly recommend County Marquees to all our friends and family and we will definitely use them again for more celebrations in the future. From our first meeting, we felt confident that they were going to give us a day to remember and this helped us to relax and enjoy the preparations even more. Helen Wingstedt is passionate about all things equine. Based in St Hilary, near Cowbridge, she tends her herd, rehabilitates horses and, surprisingly, trains people using the principles of ‘Equamigo’. Vale Life meets…
THE HORSE WHISPERER Helen Wingstedt’s knowledge of equine psychology, behaviour, relationships and health comes from thousands of hours of handson interaction with the herd that she leads. We met Helen on a crisp, Spring day to find out more.
Meeting Helen is an experience in itself. She exudes an uncanny aura of calm and seems to wear a smile constantly. Today, Helen is sought after by horse owners from all walks of life and from all over the world, eager to benefit from her unique skills. Helen’s work has attracted much media attention, having been featured in many publications and radio and television interviews. When did you first realise you had an affinity with horses? I’ve always loved horses - all animals really but especially horses. I remember when I was four years old, my father jokingly asked me to pick the winner for that year’s Grand National. Without hesitation, I pointed to 100/1 long shot Foinavon who went on to win, much to my father’s amazement! Like us, horses are affected by the energies of the people and situations they encounter. They can be unbalanced by unpleasant experiences or even from the pressure to perform, being harshly judged, unfairly handled or nervously led. I travel across the UK and Europe rehabilitating them in terms of behaviour, performance and health. Many of those I visit are horses other equine trainers have given up on or sometimes racehorses, whose issues are considered untreatable and as a result are due to be put to sleep. To date I have a 100% recovery record with such horses and would like to be able to help more of them have a fresh start in life.
How does your approach work? It’s not always just about the horses. I also work with owners and trainers and help them understand how to befriend and manage horses using the principles of, what I call, Equamigo. Equamigo is the balanced friendship that horses and people have the potential to share, and encourages people to view a horse from a horse’s point of view.
Essentially, horses prefer peace and are hardwired to seek strong, clear, confident leadership which, when consistently delivered, creates a platform for intimate, trusting relationships and promotes relaxation, willingness, co-operation, softness and optimum health. When calm, assertive, confident leadership is present, owners feel a real sense of connection and the relationship with the horse often becomes a source of inspiration. Many clients tell me they feel a sense of personal growth, fulfilment and happiness after we’ve worked together. Just as strong leadership can produce amazing relationships and results, a weak leader can inadvertently create a platform for unwanted or bad behaviour, nervousness, under performance and can even affect the animal’s emotional well being in the form of depression. What are the benefits for owners? I am called out to work with horses of all ages and types who have such things as behavioural problems, stable vices and health issues, however, many owners who already have good relationships with a healthy, happy horse simply want to get to know their horses better. Helping people find their perfect horse partner is also something I’m asked to do and that I particularly enjoy, especially when they are a first time owner or are returning to horses after a break. ❧ 56 ❧
Knowing in advance exactly what kind of horse you’ll have arriving at your yard and what you’ll need to do to create a solid, safe, enjoyable relationship with them has proved a great success for many being a great confidence giver in general. You’re getting more well known for your work. Has this had an impact on your lifestyle? The more I work with people and horses, the happier I am. I love my work. There are exciting times ahead, with books, film and a documentary in the pipeline. Where do you see yourself in the next five years? I’m working on a new project - World of Whispers – the aim is to raise funds to buy a property that can be developed into a dedicated facility that both people and horses can visit for educational, developmental and therapeutic experiences. So, hopefully, in five years time we’ll be having this conversation at a new centre of excellence and wellbeing. Helen, her herd and her approach were also featured in the documentary series, Horses of Wales and she has recently guested on BBC Radio Wales providing expert insight into the extraordinary relationships between horses and people.

“It’s time to take a fresh look at your home, and fall in love with it all over again!”
Vida, the brand new and exciting lifestyle boutique on New Road, Porthcawl claims to ‘make life more beautiful’... Vale Life goes shopping.
Mother and daughter team Julie and Jessica Phillips have created a tantalising and vibrant shopping haven, full of all things gorgeous and desirable that will truly make life more beautiful.
Vida represents a lifestyle, an attitude a desire for those irresistible things that just make life a little more beautiful. At a new boutique opening in February on Station Hill, Porthcawl, formerly the home of Art Café, the shelves are abundant with such tempting items. Julie and Jessica freely admit that they are totally in love with their new store, and are certain you’ll adore the delightful goodies to be found within. In stock are several ranges of lovingly selected cards, handmade wrapping paper, exquisite candles from the prestigious St. Eval Candle Company, soaps and bath melts from Kew aromatherapy, all natural baby products from Boo Boo Baby - the list goes on and on. Aside from great gift ideas, the stylish selection of home and garden accessories from carefully chosen suppliers, unique to Vida in the area, has something for all tastes and budgets. So, as fewer of us contemplate moving house in the foreseeable future, the team behind Vida suggest that perhaps it’s time to take a fresh look at your home, and fall in love with it all over again! It’s likely that most of us are entertaining at home more and more, and what could be more lovely than creating a beautiful environment in which to welcome your loved ones?

VIVA LA VIDA Even if the food you’re serving is simple, dress your table beautifully with a few well chosen pieces of dinnerware and your guests will feel spoilt rotten. Vida favourites are their Moroccan embellished bowls from Skoura, in deep shades of ochre and jade, and the etched glassware from Danish designers House Doctor, in plum tones and deep mossy green. Embracing all that is both natural and beautiful and to add the finishing touches to your home, is Vida Flora, the in-house floral design aspect of Vida. Drawing on her experience working in a high-style florist in Orange County, California, Jessica is able to combine her love of flowers with a creative and modern approach to design and colour. Weary of seeing cellophane-swamped mixed bunches and generic supermarket offerings, she uses only premium flowers to create organic, sumptuous arrangements that you’ll find hard to resist. Simply perfect little plants and seasonal hand tied bouquets tied with vintage ribbon are always available for those last minute gifts. In the purpose built consultation room within the boutique, Jessica enjoys working with you to help create your perfect look, whether it be for an event, an intimate wedding celebration or a dinner party at home with friends. ❧ 59 ❧
Incorporating Martin Phillips’ award winning photography studio, located upstairs, the team can also combine their talents and offer a unique wedding service, where couples can take care of their wedding flowers and photography all at once. In addition to saving valuable time and reducing stress, having these two major aspects of your day working closely together helps you to achieve a very personal and holistic style, tailor made to suit your tastes. So whether you are in need of a present for a treasured friend, a gift for the celebration of a new baby, or just something lovely for your own home, Vida Lifestyle Boutique is a unique shopping experience that we feel confident you will return to again and again. Continuing our Exposure series, in this issue we chat to talented, award-winning photographer Martin Phillips of Porthcawl about his life and work.
EXPOSURE What’s your background? A slightly confused one! I started out studying Marine Biology. However, I had secretly envied my friends who were at art school and when a couple of surfing buddies came to visit for a surf contest in Porthtowan, they told me how cool their graphic arts course was! I was fascinated with this perfect fusion of science and art (and surfing). The next weekend they introduced me to their course leader and I signed up there and then! My first experience of the college darkroom was all it took to convince me I had found my Nirvana!
What photographs do you take? I always try to make time to get out early and capture seascapes (we sell them at our Art Café gallery, Porthcawl and they can also be found in several galleries around South Wales), but my main interest is in photographing people. People are my passion, I have taken thousands of portraits! Finding the right combination of light and expression can make everyone look interesting and/or beautiful. Recently, the modern style of wedding coverage has excited me; I love the combination of capturing the emotion of the day and still producing images with the wow factor that the modern bride is seeking - and weddings are such fun to do!
Do you keep up to date with the latest trends in photography? The latest trends in Art, Fashion, Graphic Design are always inspirational and many ideas for a new style of image will come from a visit to an art gallery, a fashion magazine, or a journey. At Studio Red Kite we are technically on the absolute edge and will only use the best lighting, the highest quality imaging equipment and finest materials! It takes a lot of time and commitment, but the results speak for themselves. Can you describe your style of photography? Strong lines and brilliant lighting are very important in my images. The sense of a three dimensional quality is there too, which is very difficult to achieve, and is a significant part of my work. At the moment I particularly love rich colours and textures combined with strong expressions - a sort of modern baroque. How do you get the best out of your subject? I have been fortunate enough to have the ability to connect quickly with a client and get to the foundation of who they really are. People have always said how at ease I make them feel during the shoot and that is not something that can be learnt, you either have it, or you don’t!
How do you ensure each client gets something unique? I limit the shoots to only a few per week - I do not want to be a production line photographer! I strive to give each client something unique to them; I won’t use stock studio props, for instance. This studio is not a franchise like the big names in the High Street everyone gets an individual and bespoke service. Even the style of framing can be completely customised to the client’s taste. We do custom designed books, shadow frames, canvasses and some new, unique products that we have just finished developing. Have you won any awards? Generally, I am not one to pitch myself into photo awards and competitions, I prefer an individual route to creative development. However, I did submit to the two professional photographic organisations last year and was awarded an Associateship in both, and following on, four of my favourite portraits from the submissions won top honours in the Master Photographer of the Year 2007 2008. It’s satisfying to have approval from the best in the industry, but the main focus is always on exceeding my clients’ expectations at all levels. What is your work ethic? To enjoy each day as a creative and inspirational experience.

“I love the combination of capturing the emotion of the day and still producing images with the wow factor.
As in life, business has its ups and downs and, depending on who you’re talking to in the business community, some of you are enjoying the ups at present and some are definitely not enjoying the downs. Mark Roberts considers some strategies for business survival without using...
THE F WORD One thing is for sure, we’re all in for an interesting ride over the next eighteen months and being able to adapt quickly appears to be the key to success. If you’ve been in business as long as I have, you learn that usually the difference between boom and bust is a couple of thousand pounds and sometimes even less than that. You’ll also learn some pretty fundamental truths… One, don’t stop marketing. In fact, in a challenging market, the strategy should be to up the effort. Why? Because it’s exactly what less experienced businesses do and you need to be noticed to secure the customers that are out there. Two. Don’t get sentimental. You’re in business and if you have to let one person go to keep five in a job you’d better learn to get over it, it goes with the territory. Business is about making tough decisions. And three… Now this, if you don’t do it, will probably kill your business stone dead. Be flexible. At this point, most people are thinking reduction but it can be quite the opposite. The businesses that tend to do well in challenging times are the businesses who are flexible both ways – those who can contract and expand with the market smoothing out the ups and the downs. For example, if you’re a business based in a small office and you win a large contract, what do you do? Well, you probably celebrate (who doesn’t?) and look for a larger office, sign the lease, buy the furniture and move in – that’s brilliant, but hang on...
Here’s an interesting thought. What if the company who awarded you the contract loses its contract that was basically funding the contract you have? If you’re the business that has just signed the five year lease and bought all the furniture, chances are you’re feeling pretty sick. There’s an old saying in business, “We’re all sixty days away from bankruptcy.” And it’s true, usually because we haven’t been able to adjust to the changes. Now, imagine you’re the company that had serviced offices in The Business Centre and all you had to do was call reception and shrink back to your original size. Your risk has been minimised and you’ve enjoyed the period of increased income without taking on the long term overhead and, as each office comes furnished, you didn’t have to buy any furniture or install an expensive phone system. Total flexibility I like the idea of The Business centre. It’s brilliantly simple. For example, if you’re just starting out and own a mobile phone, you might just want a good address – something that gives you credibility. Well, an address at The Business Centre will cost you a paltry £25 a month. Three months goes by, hmmm… things are on the up. You really could do with someone answering those calls you keep missing because you’re in meetings with new customers. No problem, The Business Centre reception facility including a landline number will cost you just £60 a month and yes, you read correctly, the landline number is included! ❧ 64 ❧
At this point you may be considering getting an office with your own receptionist, and you could if your business was doing well. The Business Centre has serviced office packages from small offices (one to two persons) right up to full blown suites that can comfortably accommodate six to ten people and with easy in/out terms with one months notice, you won’t be lumbered with a long, expensive lease. They even offer a range of support services from photocopying right through to secretarial services. You can hire larger rooms for meetings or presentations – they even have an IT suite and fantastic break-out areas with pool table, café and even a gym! In fact, there’s very little The Business Centre can’t supply you with or take care of for you. Those of you who are sharp, will be thinking you‘ll pay a bit of a premium for this and perhaps you’re right but when push comes to shove, it’s the old F word that matters – flexibility, which means low risk and that is usually the difference between businesses flying or failing. Yes it’s a lot of F’s to think about, but flexibility is better than another F word I can think of… failure. Mark Roberts has worked with hundreds of businesses over a twenty five year career. He has helped businesses develop successful marketing and promotion strategies through good times and bad. You can contact him on 07766 106731 and, yes, he really does have an office with The Business Centre. THE LAST WORD Lynnette Knight of The Business Centre in Barry talks to Vale Life about living in the Vale and her passion for fast cars, snow mobiling and how to avoid kissing frogs! Who are you and what do you do? I’m Lynnette Knight and I’m currently running The Business Centre based at Cardiff House, Cardiff Road, Barry. We provide serviced offices, telephone answering, mail address facilities, conference and meeting room hire. What do you like about the Vale? I have lived in Barry in the Vale for most of my life. I love that you can get to the city within thirty minutes, yet only be five minutes away from the sea and the beautiful coastal paths surrounding Barry. I am lucky enough to live in one of the oldest cottages in Barry which backs onto a common and within five minutes I can walk into the countryside or the woods. Where is your favourite dining experience? I love fish and we are lucky in Cardiff and the Vale that many restaurants have an excellent choice of fresh fish on their menu. I particularly like Loch Fyne but for a real treat I love Le Gallois Y Cymro in Romilly Crescent, Cardiff. Equally, nothing beats the fish and chips at Barry Island or at Porthcawl, especially when eaten sitting on the sea wall watching the waves or the children playing. What is your favourite meal? Seabass in rock salt with a lovely cold bottle of Italian Gavi. Favourite place in the Vale? I love the view from Marine Drive and have enjoyed many picnics on the grass verge looking out to sea. For some odd reason, I also love the view of Barry Docks and although it has changed beyond recognition from when my grandfather took me there as a child, I still smile when I catch a glimpse of the Docks from one of the hills in Barry. I also love Cowbridge with its fab shops and cafés and the little hidden beaches around Monknash bay.
Best event in the Vale? The Cowbridge Food and Drink Festival is always worth a visit but for me, any event held by The Barry Business Club as I get to be with wonderful friends, laugh lots and may have a drink or two. What’s missing in the Vale? I love everything about the Vale and would like to say nothing… however, it saddens me that Barry no longer has a vibrant town centre and if I could wave a magic wand I would make the town more attractive for high end retail outlets, which would then breathe life back to our town. Favourite place to stay in Wales? Fairy Hill Hotel in the heart of the glorious Gower Peninsula. Not only are the rooms and food wonderful but you have easy access to the beautiful Port Eynon Bay, Three Cliffs Bay and Rhossili. What do you do to relax? During the week I love to read or watch television when I get home from work and at weekend I like to have quality time with my family or have friends over for champagne or Irish Whiskey in the hot tub followed by good food, wine and excellent conversation. Do you have a pet hate? My pet hate is dog owners that don’t clean up their dog’s mess and drivers who don’t say thank you when you give way to them or people who don’t say thank you if you hold the door open for them or show them a kindness. It takes nothing to be polite and share a smile or a greeting. Favourite music? My favourite singer is Andrea Bocelli (I called my dog Bocelli after him). I had the good fortune to see him perform live. He was wonderful and has a very spiritual quality. When I do the housework I love the volume up loud to Prince or Genesis and I like to relax to Marvin Gaye. His voice soothes me.
“I also love Cowbridge with its fab shops and cafés and the little hidden beaches around Monknash bay.” ❧ 66 ❧
“I love that you can get to the city within thirty minutes, yet only be five minutes away from the sea and the beautiful coastal paths surrounding Barry.” Most memorable event? Meeting my grand daughter Jessica Molly for the first time. She’s a wonder and delight in my life. Prior to Jessica, my best experience was snow mobiling in Montreal during the Millennium. Sum yourself up in three words Hard working, loving and nuts. What gadget would you not be without and why? I am not a gadget person but I do love fast cars and anything that makes life easier in the kitchen! Any lifelong ambition? I fulfilled it a few years ago I stopped kissing frogs! I’m very good at… Giving advice. I’m very bad at… Taking advice.
