THE CITY OF CARDIFF’S PREMIER LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE

C ITY L IFE Editor Jennifer Hobbs-Roberts jennifer@goodlifepublishing.co.uk Creative Director Mark Roberts mark@goodlifepublishing.co.uk City Life Cardiff House, Cardiff Road, Cardiff CF63 2AW www.citylifecardiff.com 0845 180 2345 Passionate about Cardiff We are a small independent publisher. We are not a large publishing group pretending to be home grown. City Life magazine is written, designed and printed in Cardiff for the people of Cardiff. Our philosophy We are committed to quality. This quote by William Foster pretty much sums up our thinking: “Quality is never an accident; it is always the result of high intention, sincere effort, intelligent direction and skillful execution; it represents the wise choice of many alternatives.” Caveat emptor Advertisers supply their own copy or artwork, and therefore City Life cannot accept any responsibility for disputes between advertisers and their customers. Caveat emptor - let the buyer beware. Important you read this We have made every effort to ensure that all information contained in City Life or on www.citylifecardiff.com (or our social media streams) is correct and accurate. However, we accept no responsibility for any errors or omissions and can offer no compensation should we get it wrong. WELCOME If you live in Cardiff and love our Capital as much as we do you’ll not be surprised that Cardiff came top above London, Glasgow, Belfast, Newcastle-upon-Tyne and Manchester. We hold our own against the best in the cultural sector too scoring well above Paris, Berlin and Athens. You might be surprised to know that Cardiff has more green space per person than many cities too. Cardiff certainly epitomises the Park Life ethos. We also score high on shopping too with our fantastic Victorian arcades and the supremely successful St David’s 2 development and, while we don’t want to tell you where to shop (and making you feel guilty when you shop in a national chain - we do it ourselves when we buy things in bulk), we do try to support local independent businesses for the best reasons. Shopping locally creates jobs locally and while you can often buy products at more affordable prices perhaps online, by investing your hard earned cash locally, you are helping to retain your local community’s distinctiveness. Local shops can save us money. Don’t be influenced by the enormous advertising budgets of the huge supermarkets. We shop around a lot and I find I get excellent fruit and veg from my local independent suppliers cheaper than the big four. Yes it’s easy to jump into the car and head

off to the supermarket, especially on a wet, wintery day, but isn’t it better to buy your meat, fish and veg fresh from your local supplier? I love the fact they know me by name and I’m greeted with a heart-warming welcome? In the pages of this winter issue of City Life, you’ll discover many local businesses who deserve and value your custom. Remember, small business owners are just like you... people trying to make a living. We have our favourites but we’d love you to share yours too on our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/citylifecardiff and you can tweet to us @CityLifeCardiff - we’d love to hear from you. We hope you have a lovely Christmas and New Year and we’ll see you in the spring. Yes it’s free. Priceless actually! City Life is distributed free through a wide variety of outlets across Cardiff and beyond and is given away free of charge on the understanding that we are happy for it to be lent, passed on, given to friends and generally read until it falls apart. At which point, you can recycle it and we’d be delighted if you did. Green is good The pulp used in the production of the paper City Life is printed on is sourced from sustainably managed Scandinavian tree farms and utilises an elementary chlorine-free bleaching process.

AROUND THE CITY COWBRIDGE

Pick your own Christmas tree When Charlotte and Andrew Lord acquired a 16 acre field behind their home, they had no idea that they would end up with a Christmas Tree Farm. The first 200 Christmas Trees were planted as a solution to their own problem. They used to spend hours each Christmas driving around the Vale and beyond, searching for a Christmas Tree that had not been cut weeks earlier and transported for miles. Andrew suggested planting a few Christmas Trees in a corner of the field, so they planted enough for themselves, their friends and family. With the rest of the field needing to earn its keep, they decided to plant more and after a

few years they had thousands of trees and a new business which opened its gates for the first time in 2011. Ty Cerrig Christmas Tree Farm is open from the beginning of December daily from 10am to 4pm. Customers are invited to go to the Farm, put on their wellies and get out in the fresh air to choose their tree. All trees are left growing until someone chooses it. Some customers come early in December, put a label on their tree and come back later in the month to collect it. It stays growing until they come back. Or you can have it cut straight away by one of the friendly team. Choose from Nordmann Fir (the non-drop one), Norway Spruce (the traditional one), Blue Spruce, Fraser Fir, Serbian Spruce, Scots Pine, Lodgepole Pine, Grand Fir.

ADAPTIVE VEHICLE SOLUTIONS

Adaptive Vehicle Solutions are a family run vehicle sourcing company based in Llanishen, Cardiff. We primarily supply company directors, CEO’s of companies and time starved individuals. Our main forte, the prestigious market, with such marques as Range Rover, Porsche, Aston Martin, Bentley, BMW, Mercedes, Audi to name a few. Further to the previous, we can also supply fleet and commercial vehicles including Ford, Citroen, Mercedes Benz and Volkswagen. Full dealership facilities are available with competitive finance packages for all clients. Part exchange underwriting is available alongside local and nationwide delivery options too. Richard Blakeney, the Company Director, captured a niche audience and client base, who didn’t have the time or inclination to find a vehicle for themselves. Wasting countless hours in showrooms, needlessly trawling the Internet and making zero headway. Since February 2005, Richard and AVS have experienced the high and low points of the economy with significant growth and overcoming the economic downturn in 2008.

Priding ourselves on being able to adapt to your vehicle requirements, no matter the desire. We offer a friendly, more efficient and personal service than your local dealership, without the hassle of spending a whole day in a showroom. Although obtaining stock items for immediate delivery, sometimes it just isn’t enough, the wrong colour, too old, too new. If you simply just do not have the time to be visiting every dealer under the sun or waiting 16 weeks for a factory order, we can help. Benefiting from extensive contacts within the motor-trade 6

and the combined knowledge of over 40 years, we can “find the right gear for you”.

Friends Kate Martin and Lois Seco were fed up with the high street offerings of T shirts with naked women, illuminati triangles or brand names, so they decided to wage a war on what they considered ‘trash’ and create a brand that displayed positive Truth statements on the chests of its wearers. We chatted to Kate and Lois.

TRUTH NOT TRASH

When did you set up the business? In February 2013. What are your roles within the business? Kate is the general ideas genius, in charge of marketing and styling and Lois is the designer and t-shirt printer. What are your backgrounds? Kate is a trained primary school teacher and teaches at Christ the King Catholic Primary and is a full time mum. Lois is a fine artist and runs a separate graphic design and signwriting business called Julo Creative. What services do you offer? Hand-printed, ethically sourced, organic cotton, earth positive apparel with original designs. Why did you want to set up Truth not Trash? We noticed that the majority of options for clothing on the high street had images of naked women, trashy slogans and things that didn’t actually line up with what we want to see in our lives. We believe in the power of words and wanted to give people the opportunity to wear clothes that have a positive, life-encouraging message. Our bodies

can be used by us or other companies as a walking billboard communicating intentionally or unintentionally to the people around us - who we are, what we believe, who we aspire to be. Clothes are our megaphone to the world; wearing clothes is necessary, wearing truth is revolutionary. Other people ‘read’ us and while we are not encouraging people to be a slave to other people’s thoughts – on the contrary, we want people to rise above the thoughts of others and be true to who they are – wearing truth and positive messages not only encourages and empowers ourselves, other people see it and are encouraged – pass it on! We also wanted to bring in more options when it came to fair trade, ethically sourced garments. What materials are used in the making of your products? All of our products are fair wear and all of our products are either 100% recycled or made up of 100% organic cotton and produced in factories that use wind turbines for energy making them CO2 neutral. Who are your clients? We sell to people of all ages, but the 8

majority of our customers are aged somewhere between late teens and early 30’s. We also have a children’s range for children aged 3-12. Our clothing is unisex and we have a size guide available on the website. Which areas do you cover geographically? We are based online - truthnottrash. com and ship worldwide. Sometimes we make an appearance at pop up shops and stalls around the country. We love meeting our customers face-toface. We are both super-relational gals and could chat for ages with anyone! Where are your products made and how did you source suppliers? Our products are provided by Continental Clothing who are part of the Fair Wear Foundation. Continental Clothing Company has adopted a Zero Tolerance policy with regard to the following minimum social responsibility criteria: No use of child labour; No use of forced labour; Safe and healthy working conditions; Legal labour contracts; Payment of living wage; Freedom of association and the right to collective bargaining; No discrimination against employees and No excessive hours of work.

They also provide us with a selection of garments that are 100% recycled and the majority of our products that are organic cotton their earth positive range. EarthPositive Apparel is 100% organic with 90% Reduced CO. When a garment is ordered online, it is then hand printed by us in our studio before being wrapped and sent off. Who creates the designs? We brainstorm together for slogans and ideas but most of them are Kate’s ideas! Then Lois puts a design together. All of the slogans are personal to us and have come out of some kind of life experience. They are words that we think will help to empower people to live their best lives. This sounds all a little ‘twee’ we know, but it’s actually incredible how many negative subliminal messages the brain receives and dwells on in the day, we want to see those messages become positive, truth based, encouraging messages. Tell us about your charitable donations? We give a percentage of our profit to two organisations - one is the A21 Campaign www.thea21campaign. org who are dedicated to ending modern day slavery, raising awareness

and rescuing girls who have been trafficked. The other is Porn Scars Conference www.pornscarsconference. com who are raising awareness of the damaging effect of the addiction to porn that is more common in this generation than we think. How is the website doing? It’s doing great! We are selling to people all over the world including Canada, the States and Australia! We are always updating the website and changing it – being creative girls we find it hard to stick to one style! What are your hopes for the business? We’d love to see the brand expand into the high street and we’d love to be so busy that we would be able to provide jobs for people in the community. We hope one day to be part of a world where everything is fairly traded and, as a business, we want to enable people to join us on the journey to make that a reality. We hope that we are helping people make more informed decisions when it comes to what they are branding themselves with, where their clothes have come from and the journey their clothes have made from factory to rack. 9

We’re being bombarded with adverts for procedures for younger looking skin but who do you trust to carry out this work? You’ll only ever have one face and the advice we’re always given is do your homework. Luckily we’ve done part of this for you by introducing you to Dr. Ros Jabar. A fully qualified pharmacist and doctor, Ros is more than qualified to help you turn back the hands of time.

DR.ROS What homework should men and women do before they choose a practitioner? Important factors to consider are experience, confidence and skill with detailed anatomical and pharmacological knowledge. Obviously I’m biased as I feel doctors and surgeons have a deeper understanding of one’s anatomy, because we actually see it on a constant basis. What treatments do you offer? I offer the full range of anti-ageing treatments including muscle relaxants, dermal fillers and skin treatments using genuine Dermaroller® for acne scars, sun damaged and ageing skin, facial and décolleté lines and wrinkles, stretch marks and severe scarring. You have some exciting news about a new treatment, tell us more? I am very excited to be able to offer the thread facial lift. This is known as the Silhouette LiftTM, only offered by doctors trained via a rigorous training programme. I have been invited to world wide experts meetings in Barcelona to consolidate and share my skills. This represents a fantastic opportunity to enhance knowledge and skills providing a superb level of unrivalled aesthetic treatment. What is the Silhouette Lift? The Silhouette Lift™ gives you the opportunity to turn back the signs of ageing, without a general anesthesia, without hospitalisation and without a long recovery time. This non-invasive procedure is used to lift and reposition sagging mid face tissue. This procedure can last two to five years but claims to make you look at least ten years younger.

Who are your clients? I try to make my services accessible to everyone. My overheads are low; therefore I’m not hiking my costs to cover these. My clients are varied: stayat-home mums, dinner ladies, coffee shop employees – they come from all walks of life. I realise that money is hard to come by for most people, so this is reflected in my charges. Does low cost mean lower grade products? Absolutely not. Being a pharmacist, I understand more than most the composition of products. I only offer the best. Where is your clinic? I currently work from my office base in Severn Grove, Pontcanna but I am currently renovating a new, purposebuilt clinic in Kings Road, Canton. This will be a state-of-the-art, eco-friendly environment, as all things eco-friendly are another passion of mine. Do you treat both men and women? There’s no discrimination here! Men and women of all ages - we all want to look the best we can. What sets you apart from other practitioners in your industry? When you go into the medical profession it’s because you want to make a difference to people’s lives. This is achieved in many ways. But in aesthetics, I feel that my background in pharmacy, my medical profession and as a woman who knows the impact that aesthetics has on the confidence and wellbeing for men and women alike I know that what I offer is unique and unrivalled in its simplicity. ‘I won’t change your life but I will make a difference.’ I believe in exceeding expectations when it come to client care. This is reflected in my clients feedback and overall satisfaction. 16

We love Pontcanna’s café-golucky lifestyle. Popular with ‘media types’ it’s sometimes described as ‘little Cowbridge’. Its proximity to Pontcanna Fields and short walk to the city centre make it one of Cardiff’s most desirable places to live.

It’s been around for fifty years, but, rest assured The Place for Homes hasn’t stood still. This vast and unique showroom is in Llandow, nestled in the heart of the Vale of Glamorgan, just minutes from the fashionable market town, Cowbridge.

THE PLACE FOR YOU

The Place for Homes has a remarkable history not only in the fact that it is located in a WWII aircraft hangar (although this is easily forgotten when you step inside the fabulous refurbished 50,000sq ft showroom), but also in the celebrity involvement over the years. From Honor Blackman, Lionel Blair, Leslie Phillips CBE and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, The Place For Homes has always had a loyal following, with Leslie Phillips CBE remaining the stores President. The first thing that strikes you when you enter “The Place for Homes” is the stark contrast between outside and in and the truly astonishing choice of sofas, dining, bedroom, beds, flooring and accessories that are on offer. Everything on display has been carefully considered with styles, sizes and prices to match every individual customer need.

The sales team is headed up by Rhys Nelson, (who has recently taken on the role of Sales Director) whose extensive product knowledge and passion for all things furniture immediately shines through. “It’s all about helping you, our customer to find what you’re looking for and we’ll always go the extra mile to help you achieve that. We listen to you and make changes based on what you want”. It’s this attitude that has led to The Place For Homes to invest in products that enable a next day delivery service so that for those of us leading such busy lives there’s no need to wait. As you wander through the store, there always seems to be something new or unusual to catch your eye. With an impressive Natuzzi Editions gallery dominating as you enter the showroom – be prepared to be inspired.

“ Quality products at the best prices, with the best possible service ” 22

Chatting to Rhian Francis, MD, it’s clear that the whole ethos of The Place for Homes is the customer. “We work on very simple principles that some may consider old fashioned; we provide quality products at the best prices and with the best possible service. As a family business we aim to provide the same service and attention to detail to all aspects of our business as we would want to receive ourselves. These values have always been instilled in us by our now Chairman Mr Graham Nelson and remain at the heart of the business.” The things that immediately stand out are the passion and enthusiasm for what the company offers, with the constant focus being on you, the customer. Both Rhian and Rhys were keen to attribute this to their fantastic team of staff who ensure this ethos is continued through every aspect of your dealings with The Place for Homes. “Sue Gunston heads up our customer service team,

whilst Richard Izzard leads our excellent delivery teams and spends hours ensuring the showroom looks at its very best for you. John Franklin is our carpet, flooring and curtain expert and will visit your home to measure and advise you on all your flooring needs. Janet Jones and Ann Mayson make up our administrative department with Janet being the longest serving staff member joining over 45 years ago! Ceri Powell is our furniture sales advisor with extensive experience in furniture and beds with particular expertise in advising customers in our mobility gallery. Tom Parker our newest member of the team is now dedicated to developing and improving our website so you can shop from the comfort of your home safe in the knowledge that you’re going to achieve that same great service.”

The enormous showroom is the home to galleries from a superb selection of leading brands, such as Natuzzi Editions, Wade, Alstons, Sherborne and La-Z-Boy in the upholstery department. In the bedroom department you can view the largest selection of Rauch sliding and assembled bedrooms in South Wales, touch and feel the luxury of Willis and Gambier or select from the affordable solid oak and high gloss bedroom displays. You can see the attention to detail as you amble through the bed department, with the huge range of beds giving you a choice whatever type or budget you are looking for. Relax on a Tempur mattress or take the Hippo and duck challenge in the Silentnight Gallery. The theme is continued in the dining department; select from modern, contemporary or traditional dining ranges and treat yourself to a new dining set in time for Christmas; brands include Nathan, Old Charm and Willis and Gambier to name a few with many solid oak dining ranges available from stock. 23

One thing that’s clear is that this is a business that is growing and moving forward with the focus being on you, the customer. It really is a challenge to describe all that’s on offer at The Place for Homes. Make a visit and enjoy a complimentary cappuccino in the new coffee bar or visit www.theplaceforhomesltd.co.uk

If you’re looking for a purple rinse or a tight perm, then realistically Slunks isn’t for you. If, on the other hand, what you crave is working with a funky, salon to create an individual style, then this is the salon for you.

SLUNKS How long has Slunks Hair Design been established? We established the business at the start of 2011. We always had the idea but wanted to make it a reality. Funky music, loud art and quirky hairdressing. It had to happen.

Who is the owner of the business? All of the staff and the people who sit in our chairs to have their hair done are the owners of Slunks. Who do you have working at the salon? There are four of us in the team at the moment; three long-established stylists ( Joel, Kayleigh and Owen) and one apprentice (Chelsea). We all have a real passion for the job we do and we really pull together as a team to create new looks. Why did you set up in Whitchurch Road? We didn’t deliberately set up in Whitchurch Road. An opportunity arose and we took it. But there is a great community of people and business owners here. We also think it’s really important to create these places around the city, supporting local area high streets. What services do you offer? As a team we offer everything from the avant-garde through to the one length cut, from hair extensions to men’s beard trims. We specialise in a wide range of colouring from super brights, to natural blondes. Who are your clients? We cater for everyone. What do you think sets you apart from other salons? We’re not other salons. From our name to our décor, and most importantly to the atmosphere we create, we keep a very open minded approach to hairdressing and to our clients as individuals. 30

Who came up with the funky décor? The mad bearded one. We found many salons to be too clinical and given that we’re in a creative industry we wanted this to shine through. We wanted to create a space which showed our creativity; our love for art and music. What brand of products do you use? We’re always experimenting with products. We’re not interested in pushing a brand on our clients. We make available those products which we think work. Matrix, REF. and Affinage are some of the ranges we use at the moment.

Do you offer discounts? We make sure our prices are affordable for everyone and we often run discount deals on Facebook or in the shop for all clients.

Where do you see Slunks in five years’ time? To be doing well and more established. To have a bigger team and larger shop, but not to have lost the individual touch that makes Slunks great.

Why do your clients come to you? Because we really do love our job. We have a passion for hair. We also believe in customer service and we do everything we can to make the whole experience enjoyable for each client. We believe that by working as part of such a close team we can push ourselves, support each other and create something unique.

To be successful in anything in life you have to be passionate about it. After Welsh International rugby player Paul Young’s career was cut short by injury, he strove for excellence with a new passion - interior design and so, in 2011, So Exclusive Interiors was born.

FIELD OF DREAMS 38 28

Paul Young and Rebecca Fox

What is your background? As a qualified builder, I’ve always had a keen interest in property. Throughout my time as a professional rugby player, I knew it was important to develop and sustain a business outside rugby. I was fortunate enough to build up a portfolio of properties whilst playing and this, in turn, allowed me to hone my project management, renovation and interior design skills for future projects. With a keen interest in property development, and an eye for interiors, it was a natural progression for me at a time when homeowners were choosing to refurbish their properties rather than moving house. Are you still involved with rugby? Absolutely, I love rugby. I’m still involved with coaching, as Head/ Forwards Coach to Bridgend Ravens, who play in the Principality Premiership. I started out playing for Llanelli RFC, moved to Cardiff and then on to Newport. Newport RFC then became Newport Gwent Dragons and I received my Welsh cap whilst playing for them in August 2003. Unfortunately retirement came due to injury in 2005 and I moved to Galway, Ireland to coach Galwegians RFC. I returned to the UK in 2009 to be Director of Rugby at Coleg Gwent, Crosskeys and Wales U16s Assistant Coach. How did you come to go into this new line of business? While playing and coaching I realised that there were many attributes I could take from both roles and put them to good use starting up my business.

My work ethic, communication, drive, organisation and self-discipline have helped me succeed in setting up a unique interiors company that I am very passionate about. What services do you offer? Made-to-measure curtains, blinds and accessories using designer fabrics and textiles and designer wallcoverings. We design and create bespoke upholstery and furniture and offer a complete interior design service from consultancy right through to project management. We provide these services for residential and commercial clients. What areas do you cover? South Wales mainly, covering Monmouth and Chepstow through Newport, Cardiff, The Vale of Glamorgan, Barry, Porthcawl and Bridgend. Why would someone use you? We love what we do and want to leave our clients loving their surroundings. Over the years we have built up strong relationships with some fantastically unique suppliers. With a vast selection of products and the exciting news that Rebecca Fox has joined our team, we are more than confident of providing bespoke and exclusive interiors for any space. Rebecca joins us with a wealth of interior design experience and has worked for a number of high-profile interior design companies in Wales and London. We are delighted to offer her expertise to our clients as she never disappoints. It’s exclusive relationships that set us apart. We can advise and source unique products for interiors; from restaurants to hotels, coffee shops to offices or from one room to a whole house! 39

What type of projects do you enjoy working on? I love being handed carte blanche on a project and enjoy working with themes and interiors that are unique and slightly unusual albeit for the home or a corporate space. How would you like people to see the So Exclusive brand? I’d like to think we’d be incomparable for interiors. I know we’re innovative, I believe we can inspire clients, but we’re friendly and approachable too and I think that is so important. I know we’re in a tough market but we have the talent and creativity to deliver beautiful solutions for our clients. Ultimately, I’d like clients to have the same respect for us as a brand as I enjoyed when I played professional rugby - to be the very best.

The Brogue Trader is expanding. In less than a year, the shop in Cardiff’s beautiful Morgan Arcade has grown an enviable reputation for great customer service thanks to the dedication of father and son team Chris and Keiron Macnamara.

BIG SHOES TO With Chris expanding The Brogue Trader’s operations in Bath and Chester, the responsibility for dayto-day running of the Cardiff shop rests firmly on the shoulders of 20 year old Keiron. They might be big shoes to fill but Keiron relishes the challenge. We popped in for a coffee and a catch-up. Why shoes? I didn’t choose shoes, the shoes chose me! What do you love about The Brogue Trader? The days my father isn’t in! Seriously, I like the variety of customers we have in - all types of people;

from local celebrities to just some great characters. Our clients are fantastic, and seem to really enjoy shopping with us and that makes it even better to work here. What skills do you think you bring to the business? I’m half the age of my father so I bring a different dynamic to the business. I have a different perspective on things and that seems to work really well for both of us. I’m very operational and love just being in the shop dealing with clients and helping them with their footwear requirements. 46

What do you enjoy most about your work? It’s not work because I love what I’m doing. I know it’s a bit of a cliché but it’s true! Working here is very different from working in regular high street retail - The Brogue Trader is very, very social and clients just drop by for a chat and a catch-up, it really makes the days fly by.

FILL

What shoes are you wearing? I’m wearing the Loake 1880 Buckingham in mahogany - one of our best sellers. They look great with a suit or just jeans as I’m wearing today. Who inspires you? Arnold Schwarzenegger - a simple guy who loved training and became one of the best in the world at his sport and, at the same time, built a career and his property empire and then went on to movies and politics. I’m inspired by his hunger for new challenges and never selling himself short. I believe that to succeed, you have to be determined and mentally as well as physically strong - that’s why keeping fit and healthy is so important to me.

“It’s not work because I love what I’m doing. I know it’s a bit of a cliché but it’s true!” What are your future ambitions? Our goal, as a family, is to have more stores. After the incredible success of Cardiff, we have Bath and Chester coming on board in early 2015. There will be a lot of responsibility on me to manage the Cardiff store and keep it on track. However, longer term, I’d like to travel and have a family of my own. Who knows, in ten years we may have ten shops across the UK that would be amazing.

Health and Sports Physiotherapy is a unique physiotherapy practice, dedicated to the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of sports injuries and musculoskeletal problems. They work closely with national teams and sporting institutes, and consult to numerous sports clubs in Cardiff and across South Wales.

HEALTH & SPORTS While they treat many elite athletes, they experience a wide and varied patient demographic taking the same dynamic approach to beneďŹ t everyone. We chat to business owner Daniel Jones about why Health and Sports Physiotherapy is the go to practice for athletes and non- athletes alike.

What services do you offer? As musculoskeletal and sports injury specialists, we pride ourselves on effective, evidence-based treatments. Our team of Chartered Physiotherapists offer a wide range of services, including occupational and workplace healthcare, sports massage, acupuncture, kinesio-taping, pilates, podiatry and chiropody.

When was the business established? Health and Sports Physiotherapy was established in 2008, with the purpose of providing the people of Cardiff and beyond with access to elite level sports physiotherapy and sports injury treatment.

Where do your clients come from? Through our clinic network we see patients across the whole of south Wales. In addition to our head ofďŹ ce in Cardiff, we also have clinics in Cowbridge, Pontypool and Abercarn.

Who is the owner of the business? Chartered Physiotherapist Daniel Jones is the owner of the Cardiff based practice. Previously physiotherapist with Cardiff Blues and Head Physiotherapist to the Wales National 7s squad, Daniel is now Senior Physiotherapist at AVIVA Premiership club Gloucester Rugby.

Tell us about your work with the Gloucester Rugby team and any other sporting teams? Having been Head Physiotherapist with Wales 7s since 2010, I joined Gloucester Rugby as Senior Physiotherapist in April 2014. The challenge of working in the AVIVA Premiership with senior international

50

rugby players, including British and Irish Lions was a great opportunity not to be missed. Working at the cutting edge of professional sport keeps your practice up to speed with the latest and most effective treatment techniques and rehabilitation methods.

It all sounds male dominated. What work do you do with women? The practice has a good mix of both male and female therapists, providing services to all levels of sports participants and non-sporting individuals. In addition to our general musculoskeletal services, we also offer small sized Pilates classes. We also have specialist women’s health and pre/post natal physiotherapy services. It’s not all about sport injuries at the clinic! Do you get referrals from doctors/ hospitals? We receive referrals from local GPs, NHS and Private Orthopaedic Consultants and Specialist Sports Physicians. You don’t need a referral from your GP or consultant to receive treatment. To book to an appointment all you need to do is call our head office in Cardiff and we can organise a session at your convenience. Do you offer payment plans? Our clinics are registered with all major insurance providers including BUPA, AXA-PPP, AVIVA and Nuffield Health. Through our ‘Sports Affiliation Program’ we offer discounted treatment sessions for members of affiliated sports teams and local sporting organisations. This initiative is geared towards bringing elite-level physiotherapy to the local population at an affordable price.

“Our philosophy is that every client receives manual ‘hands on’ treatment, coupled with rehabilitation programs to facilitate long-term recovery.” What do you think makes Health and Sports Physiotherapy stand out from the crowd? Our team has extensive experience working with Elite-level athletes and professional sports teams including Cardiff City Football Club, Cardiff Blues Rugby and the Welsh Rugby Union. Our philosophy is that every client receives manual ‘hands on’ treatment, coupled with rehabilitation programs to facilitate long-term recovery. We deal with every client on a one-toone basis within private consulting rooms, ensuring every patient gets the personal treatment they require. How do you attract new customers? Word of mouth has been our most effective method of attracting new clients over the years. We pride ourselves on providing an unrivalled level of healthcare, allowing our satisfied clients to spread the word locally. 51

If you’ve been a customer of Rhiannon Kemp-Davies, chances are you’ve had a pleasurable experience and, as her happy customers can confirm, her gifts do tend to keep on giving.

THAT’S THE SPOT Why did you start your consultancy and online shop? I wanted to offer a service that made adult toys more accessible to women. Too many women take that brave step into an adult shop but are then embarrassed and either grab the item closest to them or walk straight out. This isn’t a great experience for anyone to go through. Women can buy anonymously online but when the product arrives, it isn’t what they were anticipating. In 2008, I worked in an adult shop in London. They had a demo item of everything they sold, and no men were allowed in the shop unless they were with a woman. It was a safe space for ladies to learn about the products without the worry of appearing ‘silly’ or ‘dirty’. I got to educate women every day whilst having a giggle. As I do not have a shop, my offering takes the style of a consultation or a ‘soiree’ - a service that bridges the gap between high street shopping and online.

There is such a huge range of intimate products out there so it can feel a bit overwhelming to know what to choose. The material has an impact on the quality and hygiene of the product companies who make them can have very different standards, and there are a lot of companies that also design novelty styles, which, may look funny but don’t have pleasure as a priority.

My second is the ‘soiree’. My soirees are classy, grown up, and are there to teach everyone some important facts that every woman should know about their health, their bits and the toys I sell. I don’t sell lingerie and I don’t have any ‘games’ It is focussed on toys only (no pornography or S&M items) and I pass them around, allowing ladies to see them more closely to give better idea of how they work.

I have taken time to source products from manufacturers that I believe in, who use the right materials, take safety seriously and come up with some amazing and unique ways in which to give women pleasure.

It’s very much a fun night. I have a background in stand-up comedy - the last thing I want to do is make it a serious evening, so there are plenty of giggles to go with it.

What do you offer your clients? First, you can just shop on my online shop. I include as much information as possible on the products themselves, including some demo videos by the manufacturers, enabling the customer to get a better idea of the item. The videos are professional and contain no footage of them actually being used.

My third service is the consultation - with individuals or couples. This service is a brand new concept. As I have mentioned, I bridge the gap between buying online and buying in a bricks and mortar shop. If you are a woman who doesn’t trust websites or are too embarrassed to shop in a real shop, this is perfect for you.

“It’s very much a fun night. I have a background in stand-up comedy - the last thing I want to do is make it a serious evening, so there are plenty of giggles to go with it.” Something I would like to make clear is that when I talk about showing toys, not at any point does the client physically ‘try’ the toy. It is a case of holding the toy, feeling the material and pressing buttons to see what different sort of functions the vibrations have. The client makes a decision on what they see, feel and hear, but I am unable to allow you to actually ‘try’ the toy! I post a blog every Friday afternoon too which has so far received some great feedback and proves to be very informative. 52

Describe your clients… They’re women from many walks of life. They have to be over 18. I have chatted with a 65 year old woman about what toy is best for her to use with her boyfriend. Recently, I was working with a group of mums in their mid-30s who were very interested to see if they could use some toys to exercise their pelvic floor muscles. I find that women around the age of 30-45 are more interested in toys they can use with their partner and the couples toys are my best sellers. Are women comfortable talking to you? Absolutely. When people recognise that this is what I do for a living, it makes it easier. Anything to do with sex or masturbation is part of my everyday vocabulary. I’m an approachable person and have been described as warm, relaxed and knowledgeable. I am also lucky to have a good balance of friendliness and professionalism that’s what years working in customer service will do to you! Women feel comfortable enough to say things about themselves that they have never said out loud before. Everything is confidential and dealt with sensitively.

“Everything is confidential and dealt with sensitively.” Why do women use these products? A lot of women use these products to bring a bit of variety into their sex lives. A lot of my customers so far have been couples who’d like to bring a bit of experimentation into the bedroom. Most women find it difficult to orgasm through penetration alone so by using a small vibrator they are able to stimulate themselves whilst being penetrated to give them a more intense orgasm. Some of these women are lucky enough to have partners who buy them toys too - this sort of gesture shows a woman that her partner wants her to be happy. What’s the future of the industry? I have already seen some toys that are being linked with computers and tablets. For instance there are some toys that have apps attached with them - making remote control toys between couples very high tech! Some of these are on sale on my website. 53

The residents of Radyr have long been crying out for a decent eaterie and now their prayers have been answered, thanks to the much anticipated opening of Cicchetti.

CICCHETTI If you love kitchen theatre, then you’ll love Cicchetti - the kitchen is open so that you can see all of the food being prepared. What’s also enchanting is that the staff are all Italian, so you know that this really is an authentic family business. Cicchetti is fully licensed and the extensive beer and wine list serves the best of what’s on offer from Italy. The locals in Radyr are certainly getting into the Italian spirit by popping in regularly to stock up on items from the delicatessen. Most are flown in over dry ice from Italy and you can’t get fresher than that. Owned by the Florimonte family of the Trattoria Group, which consists of Trattoria restaurant, deli and cookery school in Talbot Green, Trattoria restaurant in Pontypridd and Zia Nina restaurant in Bridgend, the company is never one to rest on its laurels, always looking to offer something a little different. Let’s start with the décor. My first impression is a good one - rustic chic springs to mind. It has a modern, stylish, contemporary feel but the wood brings a warmth to the table. It has that Farrow & Ball subtle colouring, but not in a clichéd way, and wood flooring creates a friendly athome ambience - it’s very welcoming. There’s a bar where you can sit and enjoy your favourite tipple (Italian of course) and a number of wooden tables for when you want to stay a bit longer over breakfast, lunch, dinner or Sunday lunch.

The website says, and I quote: “In order to make authentic Italian cuisine you need the authentic Italian ingredients! This is why the Florimonte family now produce their very own products, so why not grab yours today. All of our products are available across all of our restaurants.

Cicchetti also offer a takeaway service where you can either phone in your order or pop in and choose from what’s on offer. There’s a very reasonable set lunch and early bird 2 course offering of £9.95, and Sunday lunch will set you back £11.95 for a two course and £14.95 for three.

All of our pasta and hand rolled pizza bases are made daily using only from the freshest ingredients possible, giving you the customer that true taste of Italy in every mouthful.”

We suggest that you keep an eye on their Facebook page for special offers, musical events and dates for the very popular Cookery School in Talbot Green.

In the big, wide world of the internet, you can still find some local gems. Even though they’re close to home, they’re well worth a browse.

WEB WWWONDERS TRIPLE S

A Brighter Light in the music industry Triple S is a name that you may soon be hearing on every hip hop radio station of note in the coming years. He hails from Cardiff and moved to his current home in London in 2005 but returns to Wales regularly. Born in the UK to Indian and Swedish parents Triple S started his path towards stardom in 1997 by writing lyrics in his bedroom. His room soon became an unofficial studio where he continuously worked on his craft until 2009.

In 2010 he began concentrating on writing track formatted pieces after working with a number of Hip Hop and Dubstep producers, including the number 1 selling Jungle producers, Sterling Sound, from Cardiff. Since then Triple S has traveled and made guest appearances with bands across the world, working with a Samba band in Brazil and a Rock band in Serbia. On Friday evenings, from 8pm until 10pm, he MC’s on the award winning Sub FM (www.sub.fm) with the Blakstarline Crew.

Kate Robinson has been in the hairdressing trade for years. She took a small break in order to have two lovely children and to give her new family the best start she could and now she is back with a new salon that, even at such an early stage, everyone is talking about.

C’EST LA VIE How did C’est La Vie come about? My sister and I used to have a salon together on Albony Road a few years ago. But then I left to have a baby and to focus on the needs of my family. Now that my children are old enough to go to school I decided to get back into hairdressing, being at home all the time just wasn’t for me. So since then I have tried working for other people but, deep down, I knew that I could run a successful business myself. I love the responsibility that comes with being in charge of a business, I love the stress, I even love not being able to sleep at night because of it. I love being busy and so when the opportunity for C’est La Vie came along my sister and I jumped at the chance. I was a little scared but then I realised that this is the best thing ever for me to do. So what made you choose the Rumney area? I just love this place, I’m originally from Llanrumney, my entire family is here and it is also where I did my salon training. So when deciding on a location for the business it had to be here.

It’s a nice little village with a lovely sense of community. Since we started in mid 2014 it seems that everyone is talking about us. I feel so overwhelmed by the kind words we are getting from new customers, we are also seeing clients that we used to see in Albany Road who, hearing that we are back, come specifically to see us again. Even after a six year gap they still know my sister and I as the two hairdressing sisters and come to us as if no time has passed since we last saw them. What are the staff like? What services do you provide? There are four of us - myself, my sister Emma, Chloe and Chelsea. We do everything a women’s hair salon should. Cutting, any type of colouring technique, hair ups and so much more. This place is run like a family. We treat each other as if all of us were sisters. If ever there are any disagreements we sort it out straight away and get back to being friends and providing a fantastic service to our clients. We treat each other as equals. We are not like other salons who look down on their staff because they’re new or in training. Every member of this little family is as important as each other.

Do you specialise is any particular hair techniques? When we were looking for new hair stylists to come and work with my sister and myself we want to take on skilled people who could do everything when it came to hair care. Although, as with any profession, each of us does have a few hair care techniques that we love doing. As I mentioned earlier I love a challenge, so I do everything to do with colouring or colour corrections. If a woman comes in with black hair and wants blonde hair she comes to me and she leaves with beautiful blonde hair. Emma is amazing with short hair, no matter if it is sorting out perms for the older generation or if someone wants to come in and have half of their head shaved. She absolutely loves the technical side of cutting and it shows in her work.

62

Finally Chloe is fabulous at styling, blow drying and doing hair ups. We are lucky to have such a skilled stylist. We look forward to when Chelsea is fully trained so that she can show off the skill that we know she has. Is C’est La Vie your only venture? No, at the moment I am also helping out with a place called Amoré Vida. It is a little clothing boutique that stocks a beautiful collection of clothes. It is a brand new business and so is still quite small, yet with the praise we have already received about it we are sure that it is going to blossom into something much bigger. As a wife, mother of two, and owner of one of the Vale Of Glamorgan’s most popular boutiques, Jodie Tanner appreciates the real demands that life can place on women.

STYLE PHOTOGRAPHY SIAN OWEN

The Queen B has been open five years now. How are things going? Really well - We opened at the start of the recession and everyone thought I was mad (including myself) We seemed to have proved them wrong as we have gone from strength to strength year on year!

Why do you think The Queen B is so successful? Stocking the right products at the right price. We have weekly deliveries of new stock so week on week you’ll always find something different. We vary our brands from season to season so there is always a fresh look. Our service is attentive but not overbearing. If you want to be served, we’ll serve you, if you want to be left alone, we’ll leave you alone. We are not pushy and like clients to come in just for a chat, underpinning this with a lot of passion and hard work! How do you balance your working life as a boutique owner with being a wife and mum? Well you can only do your best. I make what I think are the right decisions at the time and just try to do my best. I am constantly feeling guilty about being a good mum, but the bottom line is that Ben and Lily come first. How do you relax? With wine! Do you watch what you eat? Not really, but if I start to feel ‘too uncomfortable’ in my clothes I start the ‘no wine in the week and no bread diet’. It works for me. What do you love about your age? I don’t love my age but I guess age brings confidence. It’s a funny thing, your body has more imperfections as you get older, but I see a lot of women who are more comfortable in their own skin as they get older. Everyone has an opinion but I’ve learned not to care too much about what people think.

QUEEN Would you have any cosmetic work? I haven’t yet but that’s not because I am against it in moderation - I don’t think the plastic face look is attractive - never say never though.

Do you think any woman at any age can look good? Yes, but like anything in life you have to work at it to succeed and, as you get older, you just have to work a little harder. Good hair and make-up are critical. I don’t believe that women should wear a typical style just because they are a certain age. I believe it’s about individual style, shape and personality. Do you enjoy running one of the Vale’s most popular boutiques? Without a shadow of doubt it’s the best job I’ve ever had. What are your most important business values? Customer service - it’s paramount. Everyone who walks through the door will be treated the same, whether they are buying a £10 scarf or spending £500 on a mother of the bride outfit. We will always tell you the truth. If something doesn’t look good, we will tell you. We would prefer our clients walk away with nothing and comeback; than go with something that wasn’t right and never return. Who do you turn to in times of need? My husband and mother are my best sounding boards - they both know me so well and are not afraid to tell me the truth. They’ll never tell me what they think I want to hear. What’s next for you? Now would that be telling. There’s some exciting developments. You’ll just have to watch this space. Samala is a young mum who has a passion for fitness. She started Fit Bump last year with the goal of showing pregnant women that you should remain fit and healthy before, during and after pregnancy, not just so you will look good (which you will) but because it’ll make you feel better and will have a positive effect on your little boy or girl.

FIT BUMP What is the idea behind Fit Bump? I am fascinated with the human body and with pregnancy. Before being a mum I never had the fitness or the body that I thought I could have. I’ve always exercised but I never realised the full potential of what a woman’s body could do. So to find that, with exercise, after giving birth I was fitter and healthier than I was before really made me think, If I can feel this good then so can every other mum and mum to be out there.

What I do isn’t about losing weight, it is about becoming fitter and healthier which has a positive effect on both mum and baby. Having a baby is a very physical event, many of my post natal clients suffer from back problems. I exercised all the way through my pregnancy, I had a successful delivery, a quick recovery time and a very healthy and well developed little boy and I put that down to the fact that I was healthy and fit. I loved my pregnancy and I’m passionate about helping other women get the best out of theirs. So what kind of exercises do you do with the expectant mothers? It changes based on their individual needs. But my main focuses are strength, weights and resistance training. Your body is designed to move, it wants to be strong, many women worry about these exercises making them bulky but that isn’t the case. I wouldn’t suggest them if they were going to have an adverse effect.

I’m open to anyone’s wants and needs, if someone doesn’t like something then we will work around it. With pregnancy their bodies are going to change no matter what but with Fit Bump I can help make the process as amazing and as beautiful as they want it to be. I have also started Camp Fitbump. Aimed specifically at busy mums the Camp offers 2 one hour sessions a week 8 weeks. Together we will work towards an effective post natal recovery, including weight loss, nutrition, increased fitness and body confidence. What qualifications do you have to do this? I have my level 3 personal training diploma as well as being qualified specifically for adapting exercise for pregnant, antenatal and postnatal women. I used to work for David Lloyd Leisure as a personal trainer, which was a great foundation for my career. I am constantly researching new techniques and keeping up to date on the research surrounding mothers and their newborns. At some point in the future I am also aiming to expand to Pilates and Yoga for pre and postnatal. What’s the main benefit of being self employed? The main benefit is that my clients get better care and savings. I work for myself and not for a big corporation so I know all of my clients personally, I tailor everything to their specific needs so that they receive the best care that is right for them. Also as I don’t have to pay as many overheads the savings I make I pass onto my clients. This way they are getting a personalised care plan that is good for them and their unborn child that is also affordable. Where does it take place and what do your rates include? With Fit Bump I travel to you and we do it in the comfort of your own home. If you would like to go elsewhere I have a personal training space that is private and discreet. 68

I do both Post Natal Fitness classes and Pre/post fitness classes at Funky Little Chickens as well as doing pregnancy fitness classes at the University Hospital of Wales (Heath Hospital). Babies and Toddlers are more than welcome in all classes and personal training sessions, so you never have to worry about finding a sitter. As well as the exercises my rate includes use of my equipment, a unique programme designed specifically for the individual, body analysis as well as meal plans and shopping lists. I will do whatever they need in order to help them get to their end goal. Testimonial

“I’ve been working with Samala since I was three months pregnant. I have really enjoyed working out with Samala and the other mums. Not only does it get you out of the house but you can get fit, mix with other mums and share hints and tips about babies, dieting and fitness.” Hayley Quigley (opposite, left) and Keeva (6 months) Fit Bump 07837 124 267 www.fitbump.net facebook.com/fitbump.net Quote City Life magazine and get 10% off personal training packages.

To arrive at and stay at your physical peak and attain many sporting accolades takes time and dedication. We chat to Non Evans MBE about her accomplishments over the years and how she now works to help others achieve their goals.

BUILD A BETTER BODY At what age did you first get into fitness and why? I was born to do sport. I could run before I was a year old. I started acrobatics at the age of eight and Judo at the age of eleven. I used to pull my sister around the garden when I was five years old on her bike because I wanted muscles! At what age did you start competing and in which sport was this? I was Welsh Judo Champion from the age of fourteen until I retired following the Commonwealth Games In Manchester in 2002, at which I also competed in weightlifting, and became the first ever person to compete in two separate sports at one Games. You have competed in many sports. Can you tell us which is your favourite and why? It’s a tough question. Judo was my first love, especially as I won two silver medals at the Commonwealth Championships, but rugby was probably my favourite. I travelled the world and enjoyed being part of a team. I played for Wales, The British Lionesses and was also full back for the World 15 in two test matches against New Zealand in 2003. But I also loved wrestling at the Delhi Games four years ago. How many hours a day did you dedicate to sport? I used to train three times a day, before work, lunch time and ever evening. I trained with Wales every Saturday and played rugby or competed at Judo, weightlifting or wrestling on a Sunday, or when I was not playing rugby. So a lot of hours!

“Judo was my first love, especially as I won two silver medals at the Commonwealth Championships, but rugby was probably my favourite. ”

You were a Gladiators contender on TV in 1997. How was that experience? It was one of the best experiences of my life. That year 26,000 people had applied and only 32 got selected - sixteen men and sixteen women. It was watched by over nineteen million viewers. It was the X Factor of today. It was tough but brilliant to compete in front of 20,000 screaming fans in Birmingham. You have worked on TV and Radio. What do you enjoy working in these mediums? I became the first female rugby presenter in Wales in 1997. Then I worked as Sports Producer full time at Real Radio. Commentating at the London 2012 Olympics on the weightlifting and the wrestling and at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games for the BBC are my highlights. I love the buzz of live radio and television and it replaces the adrenaline rush I got from competing in sport since I retired. I also commentated for Sky at the women’s rugby World Cup this summer which was surreal, but great. You’ve won many accolades, which do you take most pride in? Beating England 16-15 for the first time ever, kicking the final penalty to win and secure the Triple Crown is a highlight, but becoming the first ever female rugby player to receive an MBE has to be top of the list.

When did you retire from competitive sport? I retired from rugby in 2011, following the World Cup to focus on my wrestling as I was British Champion and was hoping to compete at London 2012. But a sustained a career-ending injury, snapping my hamstring off the bone in 2011, thus had to retire. It was the saddest day of my career. How much training do you do now to keep in the shape you’re in? I train four to five times a week, but nothing like I did when I competed. I like to stay in shape so that I can inspire others who follow my healthy eating and exercise plans to get in shape and change their lifestyles for the better. Given the obesity problem we have in Wales, what do you think are the best ways for us as a nation to keep well? Eating healthily is the most important thing and avoiding too much alcohol. Brisk walking is key to burning fat, especially on an empty stomach in the morning as you keep your heart rate in the fat burning zone. But it is 70% diet and 30% exercise that will help people lose body fat. There is no point working hard at the gym if you are eating the wrong foods.

You have been awarded an MBE for services to sport. How was that experience? It was a great experience. I had a makeover for a TV programme who followed me for the day, and attended the ceremony at Windsor Castle. It doesn’t seem real. I will never forget that day. Tell us about your work with charities? I am an ambassador for numerous charities, and attend a number of events. It is great to give something back and help raise money for such worth causes. 71

The luxurious Cottesloe Clinic offers advanced facial aesthetics and medical skin care in Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan. The clinical director, Sophie, aims to remove the stigma surrounding the industry and provide treatments the way they should be; Professional, safe and ethical.

THE COTTESLOE CLINIC Tell us a bit about who you are My passion for skin health and facial aesthetics began back in 2004. I currently split my time between working as a specialist clinical prescriber in the NHS and as a private cosmetic practitioner. I have eleven years of ongoing clinical and pharmaceutical experience and I’ve spent considerable time refining my skills in facial aesthetics. Over the years I’ve worked with some very talented people and know I am privileged to have gained such a vast experience.

How do people know whom to trust when choosing a practitioner? The regulation of the facial aesthetics industry has been notoriously poor, however it is improving. To stay safe, my advice would always be to ask to see the appropriate practitioners qualifications. Never assume that just because the person is a doctor or healthcare professional that they are qualified to carry our your aesthetic procedures. They must have completed specific training in this specialty and be fully insured. At the Cottesloe Clinic we clearly display ours for all clients to see.

“Safe, professional and discrete.”

72

What is an appropriate practitioner? According to the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulation Agency (MHRA) an appropriate practitioner is a doctor, a dentist, a nurse or pharmacist prescriber. Personally, I think it’s very important to be affiliated with a Plastic surgeon with an interest in Facial Aesthetics too, which we are at TCC. What sets you apart? I offer a holistic, all encompassing treatment plan for all skin concerns. When a patient comes to the clinic, I don’t only look at the structure of

“A client’s safety and satisfaction are our upmost priorities.” the face or how many wrinkles the client may have; I look at the whole picture and develop a treatment plan according their budget. I want results as much as my clients do, so won’t let them waste their money or time on something that I don’t think will work. Safety and satisfaction are my number one priorities. What treatments do you offer? We offer the very best in skin rejuvenation treatments from peels to injectables. We offer free, no obligation consultations and clients are welcome to return as many times as they need, until they feel comfortable and confident that they want a treatment. A fear of needles needn’t put someone off coming to see us as we offer effective, non-invasive, painless treatments as well as traditional ‘Botox and fillers’. Our treatments are evidence-based and have proven results. We only use FDA regulated fillers that are fully reversible. People are understandably afraid of

fillers given their past history, but things have advanced massively. These days they hydrate the skin, improve it and simply disappear over time. You won’t get a trout pout here at TCC! What treatments do you do that are different to other clinics? Cinderella lips: the clue is in the name! We augment the lips with a product that disappears within 24-48 hours. It’s a great quick-fix treatment for a special event or if you’re just curious to try out plumper lips. We also offer a product that will make your own natural eyelashes 25% longer, 106% thicker & 18% darker, which really works. What should people do if they want more information? Just get in touch. I understand that taking the first step towards having a treatment can be quite nerve wracking for some, but rest assured you’ll never feel pressured to proceed with treatments at TCC. You’re in safe hands at The Cottesloe Clinic and you will receive a professional and friendly service throughout your journey with us, be it ten minutes or ten years. We also have lots of information on our website and the British College of Aesthetic Medicine has an informative website about all the treatments we offer too (www.bcam.ac.uk). An exciting new venture for The Cottesloe Clinic is opening soon at Belle Toujours, 113 Cathedral Road, Cardiff CF11 9PH 73

If you’re a business in Wales looking to connect with new clients, then one show that you should be thinking of exhibiting at next year is the one organised by Paul and Tracey Smolinski and is reputed to be Wales’s biggest business exhibition

INTROBIZ BUSINESS EXPO From visibility to credibility, exhibiting at a business show has many benefits for your business. Establishing a presence, whether big or small, for your company at a show gives you a powerful platform for meeting new customers, reaching out to your existing clientèle, and building a more established and reliable brand. If more testimony is needed, then here are a few comments from businesses who exhibited at this year’s show at The Cardiff City FC House of Sport. Crownford Group Crownford has been in business for 25 years plus and I’ve personally exhibited and attended many business exhibitions over the years. I felt compelled to write to congratulate Introbiz in providing the best exhibition we have exhibited at.

The venue was excellent but more importantly the professional and enthusiastic way in which you guys managed the day was absolutely superb. It was a testament to the hard work you have put in over the last twelve months to ensure that all exhibitors had a very productive day. Speaking on behalf of myself and my team on the day headed by Gareth Williams, (Director) we had a fantastic response and have generated much more business than we ever expected. I feel as a new Introbiz member that the business links we have been introduced to via your organisation also contributed to our success on the day. So I would also like to mention and thank Genero Productions for producing an exhibition stand of the highest quality and managing the transportation, erection and storage of the same.

74

Once again congratulations Introbiz and we are looking forward to next year. Brad Williams Chairman, Crownford Group crownford.co.uk Enterprise Rent-A-Car What a great opportunity to then be involved in and sponsor Introbiz’s Wales Biggest Business Show. We had a fantastic day in what turned out to be a quality event with some much respected key note speakers. We were lucky enough to meet lots of great people and like-minded businesses to share a little information about our services, who we are in Wales and how we’re investing in the region. We are certainly excited about the prospect of being involved and sponsoring again in 2015. Luke LeSauter Head of Business Rental enterprise.co.uk

There was a vast array of exhibitors and honestly something for everyone, we are a small family run shoe store and the day for us was fantastic with £2000 taken at the show and then another £3000 taken over the following three days but directly from meeting people and making contacts with new clients at the event. If you didn’t attend… you should have! Chris Macnamara The Brogue Trader thebroguetrader.com Introbiz would like to thank the sponsors for this year’s show: Cardiff City FC, Enterprise Rent-A-Car, Millfield Capital, Sky AdSmart, Cardiff Devils, Spiros Caterers, Capital FM, Ricoh, Creo Interactive, Genero Productions, Ottimo Digital, Just Cashflow, Mr Producer, PA Promotions, Horizon Digital, Good Life Publishing, Heineken

Sky AdSmart Introbiz Business Expo was a great opportunity to showcase Sky AdSmart to local businesses and advertisers within the South Wales business community. Lots of interest, quality discussions, good networking and a fun event to round off the day. Well done to all, as a first time exhibitor/ sponsor we are extremely pleased with the outcome. The venues, people and the other businesses involved are absolutely amazing! A BIG congratulations to Paul and Tracey! Great work guys! Ideal Financial Planning The exhibition was really great for us. We got hundreds of leads and enquiries on the day and this has genuinely resulted in further business for us. The venue was great for us and for the exhibition and it was certainly clear that there was a lot of hard work in making the day the great success that it was. It was definitely Wales’ Biggest Business Exhibition! We’d like to thank everyone at Introbiz for making the day possible and we’ll definitely be back in 2015. Andy Parry Managing Director idealfinancialplanning.co.uk The Word This was our first time exhibiting at the Introbiz event and indeed our first year of membership. We have been delighted with the attendance at the event and the enthusiasm of visitors and fellow exhibitors, to make contact and do business. We took away learning from the guest speakers, new friends, and specifically a list of some fifty potential new customers or suppliers where we are now developing our relationship. An all-round good investment of our time and money. The Word theworddirect.co.uk The Brogue Trader Prior to last week I’d not exhibited at a business show before and honestly thought them a little dull, wow, how wrong was I! From the outset the event was incredibly professional and on reflection was always going to be a success, with such a good venue and great guest speakers it could’ve been anything else. 75

and keynote speakers Kevin Green, Daniel Priestley, Shed Simove, Darshana Ubl, Thomas Power, Iestyn Davies, and a thank you to Stifyn Parry for being the compere. Following the business exhibition there was a VIP charity after party. Guests were all dressed in their finery to enjoy a truly luxurious evening. and thousands of pounds were raised for members, the Cardiff City Community Foundation and FA Wales’ Level Playing Fields. Entertainment was provided by 80’s soul legend Kym Mazelle, Welsh singer James Williams and Cat Delphi. What a fantastic way to end a truly phenomenal day of business in Wales! enjoy working with people who are passionate about their business or service. We’ve built up a varied client base and with that an exciting portfolio. From recruitment agencies and local hairdressers to physiotherapy clinics and even a local builder - we’re really trying to reach out into as many sectors as possible. It’s really about people - if we like you, we’ll work with you.

Why is the company called Cog? There’s a few of us involved in the business and when we were deciding about branding, we had a brainstorm about the company name. We batted a few names around and we whittled it down to three possible options. We each then drew a possible logo to go with the names and Cog eventually came out on top. That’s also how we came up with the logo. It’s simple, we’re part of the machine - the client’s machine. We work better together. Describe what you do/offer… We’re a full service digital design agency. We try to offer businesses, or individuals, the complete package when it comes to any branding, web design or social media. It can become quite a mess when you’ve got one company doing one job and another doing something else. We keep everything in-house and that really helps us promote a brand in a coordinated and coherent way. Are you formally trained? My background is website development and there’s no formal qualification for that. Anybody can get into developing websites, you just need to be a little bit crazy because there’s a lot of code involved! Our Creative Director has over 30 years of experience working at some of the world’s best design and advertising agencies. We know what we’re doing. We’re no mugs.

be a lot more work involved when developing an eCommerce website but the companies who we have worked with so far have had fresh ideas about how to market their products and that’s really satisfying. Describe your approach to business? Just be open and honest. Whether it’s when you’re having a quick chat with someone you’re working with or giving a presentation to a potential new client. We’ve found the types of clients who we enjoy working with are those who are open and honest too and that helps us build trust with them. I think we have the right approach – people seem to like it. What mistakes do people/businesses commonly make with their websites? We’ve seen websites where the company hasn’t put any of their contact information, where links for news articles are broken and text that’s so small it can’t read. The worst website mistake a business can make is not having a responsive site that’s compatible on all mobile devices. With 1.2 billion people across the world accessing the web through their phones, it’s a no brainer for a website to be mobile and tablet friendly.

Why would a business come to you? We’re always open and honest about the whole process. No design speak, no fluff, no nonsense – we believe our approach is a refreshing change to the ‘usual’.

What other services do you offer? We predominately offer branding, graphics and website creation. We also offer SEO (search engine optimisation) and content management for websites and social media. We’re also branching out into app development, with the way people are using mobile technology, it only seems right for businesses to offer a mobile application.

Do you offer eCommerce? Yes certainly! With businesses looking to offer their services through the web with minimal fuss and online stores popping up ten to the dozen, it would be silly for us not to! There tends to

Are you busy? What kinds of businesses are you working with? Cog started properly at the beginning of this year and we’re getting busier. We’re always looking to take on exciting new projects and really 79

Are you expensive? Good branding or a great website doesn’t have to cost a fortune. We have clients who have literally junked their old websites after talking to us. Why spend money trying to fix something that’s so awful when, for a third of the cost, you can have a brand new one? What advice would you give to anyone starting out in business? Try to get as much help as possible from those who have experienced starting their own business. Are you happy working for yourself? What do you like about it? Yes, definitely! There’s something extremely satisfying about running your business. It’s not for everyone. You have to be driven. Waking up every morning knowing that you are your own boss is pretty cool. What have you learned so far in business? When running your own business always take time to work ‘on’ it and not just ‘in’ it. Sum yourself up in three words… Honest. Determined. Jokester.

However, this new ‘state of the art’ facility will enable them to undergo diagnostic tests and treatment for cardiac disease. This will mean a seamless patient journey from the out-patient appointment through to interventional angiography, angioplasty or stent and if required even cardiac surgery. www.spirehealthcare.com

The St David’s Hotel & Spa Charity Cocktail The five star St. David’s Hotel & Spa celebrated the launch of their new charity cocktail for Wales’ leading cancer charity Tenovus with a special event attended by over 60 guests. As part of the celebrations, attendees had the chance to sample the drink ahead of its addition to the hotel’s cocktail list. Guests were also given the opportunity to suggest names for the cocktail. The cocktail was created by Tenovus patron Sian Lloyd. Working closely with the hotel’s bar manager she created a delicious cocktail that she believes will appeal to visitors of the hotel. £1 from the sale of each cocktail will go directly to Tenovus, raising money to help support cancer patients and their families in Wales. When you live in a city, sometimes it’s nice to say goodbye to work for a little while, get away from the traffic, be mesmerised by some blue sea and completely chill out. There’s no better place, without having to get on a plane, than Cornwall. We’ve saved you hours of research to bring you…

THE HEADLAND HOTEL What does it offer? Choose between the 96 rooms and suites in the hotel or perhaps opt for one of their 39 Headland Cottages, where you have the space and freedom of your own Cornish seaside cottage, but with all the benefits of staying in a luxury hotel. Who owns it? It’s been owned and run by the same family for over 30 years and is the winner of three prestigious gold awards 2013/2014. What’s on the menu? Relax on The Terrace or go for fine dining in The Restaurant. They do a mean Cornish cream tea and the resident mixologist makes a meaner Margarita.

Can we spa? Oh yes, the recently refurbished spa is Cornwall’s only ‘Five Bubble’ rated spa hotel. Professionally trained team members offer treatments from renowned product houses such as Elemis, OPI and Kerstin Florian. There are single and double treatment rooms and even a VIP suite. A private Jacuzzi suite is pure indulgence. Or take a dip in the heated indoor (or when the season dictates) outdoor pools. Is it pooch friendly? You can tick this box. Well-behaved dogs are welcome in the hotel and cottages – they’ll even provide a dog bowl, blanket, food and some yummy treats. There’s a £20 per dog, per night surcharge but dogs deserve a holiday too don’t they! What else can we do there? You can relax and enjoy the fantastic views, try your hand at pitch and putt, kick a ball around the football pitch or you can head off in the car to check out the surrounding towns of Newquay, St Ives and Padstow. Are they open for Christmas? Cornwall isn’t just a summer destination. Winter and especially Christmas and New Year are the perfect times to visit the Headland - the surf is wild and dramatic at this time of year. There are Christmas and New Year special packages on the website.
