WELCOME

Namaste. Welcome to the spring edition of Vale Life. After all the turmoil of Brexit, we thought life would get a little less fraught. But life has a habit of not going exactly to plan. As I’m writing this, the country is facing, what appears to be, one of its greatest challenges for several decades. Coronavirus has landed and it’s not going away any time soon. The fear and uncertainty that this is creating is understandable and, for most Vale residents, hopefully we will endure relatively unscathed. We can but wash our hands (thoroughly), keep calm and carry on. The situation will inevitably cause disruption and for the Vale of Glamorgan’s small, independent businesses, it will mean huge challenges. However, there are benefits from using small shops: there would be less crowds (less people, less chance of contact with anyone carrying the virus). Large supermarkets would create, potentially, a greater chance of catching the virus. Perhaps this is the time that, by changing our behaviour by shopping at your local butcher, greengrocer and fruiterer, we can all make the change to a more environmentally friendly way of living. It was interesting that when I was at one of the major supermarkets recently, the shelves were stripped bare of toilet roll, paracetamol and sanitizer, and baby food was going a similar way. While at our local small shop, supplies were plentiful.

Talking about sustainability and with the environment very much in mind, we have a couple of features in this edition which touch on it. Davies & Jones have introduced the Sea2See brand which are made entirely of recovered and recycled ocean plastic. You’ll find that feature on pages 38 and 39. On page 12 and 13 we have our regular spread about Happy Days Vintage. Happy Days is the epitome of the reclaim, recycle and reuse ethos. It’s a lovely place and you should certainly pay them a visit. We hope we will all come through this and wish you the very best, brightest and healthiest spring. Stay safe, keep healthy and be kind. See you in the summer. Namaste. Harley Street, London, is a name synonymous with world class medicine, the best cosmetic surgeons or aesthetic practitioners and, over recent decades, a place most people think of when seeking the very best hair transplant procedures in the world. With the opening of Head Quarters on Charles Street, Cardiff, those seeking the best won’t have as far to travel.

Hair R aiser

Stifyn Parry is a much-admired Welsh media star, entrepreneur and entertainer. He is the Managing Director of Mr Producer. Stifyn has thirty-five years’ experience in the creative industries and works as creative producer, entertainer, presenter, consultant, writer and mentor. He has now joined the growing list of customers for this revolutionary procedure. Vale Life caught up with Stifyn to find out more. Stifyn, tell us a little more about your life in the public eye. I set up Mr Producer in 2001 and produced some of Wales’ most prominent live events such as the Opening Weekend of Wales Millennium Centre for BBC Wales, and Welcome 2 Wales, Ryder Cup Opening Concert at the Millennium Stadium for SKY 1 and Sky Arts. I created and managed the globally renowned Welsh Expat Social Welsh and Sexy Society (SWS) for over ten years, with events in London, Spain, New York and Russia.

As an entertainer, I starred as Marius in Les Miserables in London’s West End, as an actor playing Christopher Duncan in Channel 4’s Brookside and a presenter of a game show and chat show. When not entertaining, I deliver seminars, workshops and private sessions to develop confidence in performance and interview/audition technique to all ages and abilities. What made you want a hair transplant? I decided to have a hair transplant at Head Quarters Hair Transplant Clinic in Cardiff after having the owner and Ex All Black and Cardiff Blues captain Xavier Rush in to talk on my Radio Cardiff Chat show “Stifyn’s Stuff.” I was always known for my piercing blue eyes and thick head of hair I describe as a “door stop” in Brookside. My father always had very thick hair and he started to lose his hair early. When my brother lost his hair early, I used to take the mick out of him and 4

then, much to my disappointment, I started to lose my own hair. My choice to have a hair transplant isn’t one of vanity. If it was, I would tell you. Neither is it to restore my confidence. I certainly don’t lack confidence! I teach confidence. What I lack is hair! It was about taking the choice back,

“Dwi yn mentora i hybu hunan-hyder, tydw i ddim angen mwy o hyder ond roedd angen mwy o wallt arnai!” I didn’t choose to lose my hair and, given the choice, when I was told that it wasn’t too late and I could have my hair back with a two day hair transplant procedure, I thought why not. How did you find the procedure? I finally decided I’d like my hairline

back and cannot believe the results. Instant! And will only get better over the next months. It’s been an amazing experience and, honestly, I couldn’t wait to come back the second day because firstly, I had a laugh, and secondly, because It’s fascinating. I have learnt so much about my hair and now I won’t speak to anyone on the phone. I’ll only facetime them because I’m so excited and I’m showing everyone my hair saying look I have hair again! I don’t believe a hair transplant should be referred to as a transplant. To me I immediately think of a kidney transplant. I don’t think it should be called an operation either as that sounds dramatic. It should be called a procedure, as everything else implies pain and drama and the whole experience was stress- free, pain-free and very enjoyable, getting looked after so well I’ve really enjoyed it. When I arrived, I thought this is marvelous, getting pampered and resting it’s like going to a spa for the day!

The phenomenal, friendly team were led by Dr Ted Miln - a true gent and highly experienced surgeon, and the charming front man for ex rugby player Xavier Rush. And I didn’t have to get on a plane, or a train either! Thank you HQ - now affectionately known at our house as Hairy Queen. Diolch o dop fy mhen! Initially, did you have any concerns about the procedure? I did. I was concerned that it would look as natural as my hair looked before, how long it would take and whether it would be painful. Dr Ted Miln is a true artist. He is meticulous. He designed my hairline not only based on my bone structure and facial dimensions, but he actually asked me to bring in old photos and he recreated my old hair line perfectly. My procedure took two days (most hair transplants take only one day) and no, it wasn’t painful at all. Not only that, Dr Ted Miln and the team replanted and recreated my crown, putting the hairs into a circular manner to complement the way they will grow back naturally. 5

Would you recommend the procedure to others? Absolutely! To anyone thinking about having a hair transplant consultation, book one in. The consultation is free and you can ask as many questions as you like. The answers are fascinating as, on one hand, it’s absolutely simple; you move hair from the back and sides of the head and replant it in the top where it’s bald. On the other hand, it’s so detailed because we have grafts with one, two, three, four, five bulbs and the hair grows in patterns that the surgeon respects and recreates like an artist only replanting single follicles to the front of the head. The only thing you have to worry about is finding time in the clinic’s busy diary that works with your availability. To have a Harley Street Hair transplant surgeon like Dr Ted Miln here in Wales, in Cardiff, why on earth would I go to London, or anywhere else? As soon as you meet the man who is doing your procedure you will know that you are in the best hands.

STIFYN PARRY

Quick fire questions Where do you live? We live in St Fagans and whilst it doesn’t qualify as the Vale, we are on the cusp as we’re literally down the road. In fact, when we bought our house, I actually though we were in the Vale, but hey ho! Although St Fagans is very beautiful, it has no community feel, apart from our closest neighbours. We have no shops, post office, so no heart to the community. This is why I love the Vale so much, all the towns and villages seem to have such a healthy heartbeat What do you love about the Vale of Glamorgan? I love the walks along the cliff tops, the seaside walks, and BBQs at Porthkerry Park. There are so many great country pubs to choose from, and restaurants too. I’m really fond of Llantwit Major and have friends who live there. It has a real community feel and I have had some of the best evenings there. Do you frequent any of the restaurants/pubs there? I really like the Old Swan in Llantwit for its great food and excellent atmosphere. One of my favourite places to eat is the Hare and Hound in Aberthin, and I am ecstatic that the owners have opened up the Heathock Pub near me in Llandaff. My favourite thing is to just jump in the car and get lost in the Vale. That’s easy for me as I have no sense of direction! Where I end up always seems so picturesque and special. Any particular shops on your go to? I’m not a big shopper, but when I do, I go mad, and I’ve gone mad quite a few times in and around Cowbridge, then end up eating and drinking - no shock there! 6

GREAT FOOD, GREAT SERVICE, GREAT VIEWS

Hilary and Iain by the sea Overlooking the Bristol Channel in Ogmore-by-Sea, where it widens and heads for the Atlantic is where you will find this cool, quirky little café/bistro.

Probably the benchmark for Sunday lunch, and it enjoys a truly stunning view (you should see the sunsets), Hilary and Iain’s really is perfect.

This is home cooking at its very best. From Iain’s hand cut steaks, a selection of the freshest fish dishes and their famous lasagne are just a few examples on the menu. In addition to their vegetarian and children’s options, you will be spoiled for choice when calling for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Hilary’s homemade desserts and cakes are now legendary so leave room for one!

HENSOL The Vale Resort named best resort spa in Wales

For the third year in a row, the four-star Vale Resort in Hensol, South Wales, has been named Wales’ best resort spa by an international awards body that recognises excellence in tourism. The Vale Spa, located in the four-star hotel and leisure venue in the Vale of Glamorgan, was named Wales’ Best Resort Spa 2019 at the 5th annual World Spa Awards. The resort is no stranger to accolades and also retained its crown of Wales’ Best Golf Hotel 2019, completing a hattrick of winning both awards three years running. Last year, it also featured inside the Lonely Planet’s first Wellness Escapes guide, a global list of the best places to experience total wellbeing and relaxation. The ceremony was organised by the World Travel Awards to recognise the best in travel and leisure, which has been described by the Wall Street Journal as the ‘Oscars of the travel industry’. This year’s ceremony was held in the Armani Hotel Dubai, situated at Burj Khalifa - the world’s tallest tower. The Vale Spa fought off stiff competition from the Forum Spa at Celtic Manor and the Spa at Corran Resort to win the title again. Votes are cast by professionals working within the spa industry and by members of the public. Stephanie Metson, Marketing Manager at the Vale Resort, said: “To have won this award not once, not twice, but three times, is testament to the hard work our entire team put in day in, day out.

“The World Travel Awards is recognised on a global scale and is an industry-wide benchmark of quality, so to meet its high standards more than once demonstrates our commitment to offer the best quality service. “We believe our spa, which is Wales’ largest, offers a warm welcome and access to plenty of bespoke relaxation spaces, in addition to indulgent treatments, and that sets us apart from other hotels with spa facilities.” The Vale Spa has 19 treatment rooms and five bespoke relaxation zones. These include the ‘chill-out’ zone with leather sofas and magazines, the ‘float’ zone, with water beds and water feature, and the ‘slumber' zone, with low lighting and quilts. The resort’s spa and leisure 9

facilities also include a 20-metre pool, whirlpool bath, steam room and sauna. Ms Metson added: “We recently also announced a craft gin distillery which is opening in the new year in the cellars of Hensol Castle. Spa goers who want to add a little something extra to their stay or day will be able to add on a tour of the distillery with tastings or even distil, bottle and take home their own bespoke bottle of gin. “And if that wasn’t enough, this summer we’re investing in a major spa refurbishment, which will include expanding our spa’s wet facilities, further evidence of how we continue to invest and raise the standard in our spa offer.” www.vale-hotel.com

A Greengrocers at the heart of Cowbridge

STRAWBERRY FIELDS

It’s been eighteen months since Marcia Jones took over this popular local independent greengrocer and it’s as popular as ever. Not surprising as not only does it offer superior fruit and vegetables, it also offers an excellent selection of other essential goodies including eggs, potatoes, salad items, fresh herbs, tins and jars, wholefoods, spices and snacks, bird/animal food plus floristry and garden essentials and desirables.

Why do customers love Strawberry Fields? It may be the fact that it’s a one-stopshop for all your fruit and veg essentials, or the fact that as there is a distinct lack of packaging; customers can buy what they need in the quantities that they need, or the very handy (especially now!) home delivery service which delivers from St Nicholas to Porthcawl (see website for details).

What does stand the test of time is the great customer service - that’s priceless!

SAFE AND ENVIRON Established over thirteen years ago (lucky for some), Greenpoint IT has honed its skills and now provides a variety of IT and security services and products to people and business in the Vale and right across south Wales. Security is on everyone’s minds these days, and it pays not only to be personally aware but also to protect your home and business. Vale Life chatted with Director Kris Price at his shop, and company base, in Barry about their services and what Greenpoint is doing to help make us all feel a little safer. What services do you offer? Basically IT and security services. We started in 2007 and, back then, we offered repairs and spares for laptop and PCs. Over the last decade we have expanded, taking on more staff and now repair almost all IT related products: phones, PCs, laptops - you name it, we’ve probably repaired it.

Tell us about the security side… I’ve always had an interest in security from a young age, I’ve found that a lot of the technology requires lots of principles I’ve learned in IT so the overlap, and subsequent expansion of the business into security was a logical step. My enthusiasm and passion for security has helped me grow the business quickly - basically because I’m interested in it. I like the idea that we are helping to protect people and give them peace of mind.

“I like the idea that we are helping to protect people and give them peace of mind.”

This local, independent, family run business offers continuity of care from their team of fully qualified vets and nursing staff in either their Barry or Pontcanna practices.

VALE VETERINARY CENTRE

This award-winning veterinary centre offers home visits, emergency service, a VIP scheme and specialist therapies including hydrotherapy, laser therapy and digital radiology. What makes Vale Vets special? “We believe we have a great team – that we are independent and deliver a high-quality service that has been recognised by numerous awards annually since opening Barry and Pontcanna has followed on this tradition.

MENTALLY SOUND! Are security systems improving? Are they energy efficient? That seems to be something people are concerned about more and more… Our security systems are state-of-theart technology. They are all designed to be energy efficient given the tasks they have to do. With new energy and technological developments, I’m sure in the future they could be energy neutral if powered by solar etc. It’s not that far away - perhaps by 2025. On the IT side, our ethos is very much recycle or upcycle and reuse. We are constantly repairing phones, PCs, laptops etc. We’ve lived in a throw-away world but attitudes are changing so, if we can fix something economically, that has to be a good thing. Is Greenpoint an environmentally friendly business? Absolutely, we recycle just about everything. If we can’t reuse or repair a component, PC or laptop, we have a recycling company that collects from

us every couple of weeks and they make best use of the materials and components – the computer repair industry is all about recycling. We hang on to old components, switches, ram memory etc. You never know what will walk through the door and need some obscure part. What areas do you cover? Mostly the Vale and Cardiff but we will travel as far east as Newport. Being based in Barry we find we are more competitively priced than Cardiff companies. What do you love about what you do? It's a very satisfying profession. With Greenpoint Security, I enjoy making our customers feel more safe and secure in their own home or business. And, on the IT side, it’s repairing someone’s mobile device or fixing their computer or games console. It can be quite stressful when your phone or PC stops working. That moment when we reunite someone with their gadget and see how happy they are to have it back makes the our efforts worthwhile. 11

Recycling is on everyone’s minds these days. And quite rightly so. There’s never been a more important time to live sustainably. For one Cowbridge emporium this philosophy is no stranger. Indeed, it’s at its very heart.

RECLAIM, RECYCLE & REUSE WITH HAPPY DAYS VINTAGE Just off Cowbridge’s High Street, nestled right next to the beautiful church is the Vale of Glamorgan’s icon to recycling. Happy Days Vintage Homestore is a pretty inspiring place. An artisan market with over thirty individual sellers - an Aladdin’s Cave if you will. It is one of the biggest and best stores in Cowbridge and simply oozes vintage and retro charm.

Packed to the rafters with restored vintage furniture, antiques and garden ware, Happy Days Vintage Homestore is home to a wonderful group of diverse, local small businesses, including a talented upholsterer, local artists and jewellery makers. There’s even a stall that recycles old car parts and homeware into seriously cool lamps and décor for the home.

Not only is it a must visit if you love all things vintage but it’s packed with cool collectables. Honestly, this great little warehouse of wonder has pretty much anything you need to deliver a gift that’ll bring joy to the ones you love. But more than this, it lives and breathes sustainability. Everything about Happy Days embodies the idea that just about everything someone doesn’t want, someone else will.

In addition to the stock from local businesses they also stock ceramics, collectable toys, vintage cameras, books, magazines, comics, artwork, posters, vinyl records, ladies’ fashion, Harris tweed jackets, waistcoats and flat caps. There are Welsh dressers and plenty of Welsh themed products and a plethora of great upcycled and recycled ideas that would furnish any home. 12

Another great reason to visit Happy Days (the icing on the cake so-tospeak) is the cafe. The ladies are really friendly and welcoming. I do like their cooked breakfasts and egg on toast. Occasionally I’ll have lunch and their soup is also excellent. Honestly ladies, you’ll love this place and gents too, you’re missing a trick – it’s full of Man Cave essentials.

Cariad Café Bar has already gained an enviable reputation as being the go-to venue not only for the residents of Barry but further afield. Ken and Khlodia recently took over ownership and would like to welcome customers to sample their offering. We met Ken to find out more.

CARIAD CAFÉ BAR MADE WITH LOVE What are your backgrounds? As a teenager, I worked at Little Chef and worked my way up the chain. When I moved to Malaysia, I opened a chippy restaurant and gained much experience in the industry there. My core business is in the oil and gas consultancy and have been in this industry since I was 25. I’ve built successful companies in Asia while Khlodia’s family are in the manufacturing sector and own a bank back in her country. Khlodia, managed two elite clubs in the Philippines so what she doesn’t know about customer service is not worth knowing. Why did you choose to take over Cariad? We love food! We love to cook and of course eat. We both have a big passion for discovering food and cooking. Khlodia comes from two heritages that are known for their food. She’s half Spanish and

half Chinese and both those countries are known for the flavours of their food. She grew up learning how to cook from her grandparents, from both sides, and her dad also cooks amazing food. She has gathered all of these recipes and is excited to bring them to Cariad. It was always our dream to own a restaurant, and when we heard that Cariad was for sale, once we saw it, we absolutely fell in love with it. We knew we had to just grab the opportunity and make our dreams become reality. How long has Cariad Café Bar been open? Cariad Café Bar had been open for years already and already had an excellent reputation, so it was a no-brainer for us to take it on. What do you offer your customers? We plan to keep some of Cariad’s old menu because “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”. Cariad’s famous “cook your own steak” 14

will always be on the menu. There will be tapas and Khlodia’s special ribs/pork belly which has been with her family for generations. Her deep-fried chicken wings are out of this world. They are nothing like the normal typical wings but something not many people will have ever tasted before. We also have a vegan/ vegetarian and pescatarian menu. Customers can also pop in for tea/ coffee and cake. We also welcome well behaved pooches. What about food intolerances? We are new to this and we still have to learn along the way. For now, we are focusing on our vegan/vegetarian and pescatarian menu. Going forward, we will be introducing gluten-free, soy based and dairy-free options. What is the ethos of your chef? Our chef Kim has always had a passion

towards food since she was a child and always helped her mum at home. She started training to become a chef at 16 in a local country pub and gained a wide knowledge and uses that to develop her skill to further her career in many sectors of the industry. At the end of the day, good food is her passion, and making sure people enjoy the food she makes, makes her very happy. Do you have special nights? We support local talent by giving them paid gigs, and we plan to have someone performing every fortnight. These are very popular with our customers as they add something special to the occasion. What has been the feedback so far from customers? Since opening on March 1st, the feedback for our Sunday roast was amazing. Customers are raving about our lamb shank braised in Malbec for 24hrs. We are delighted and grateful for the fantastic support from everyone. What do you think makes Cariad Café Bar stand out from the crowd? We believe that it’s that we treat our customers as if they are part of our family.

We are in an amazing location in the west end of Barry. The Knap is a very attractive part of the town and we are lucky that we are situated across the road from a lovely park which overlooks the bay. What are your opening hours and what will you be serving at those times? Wednesday until Saturday 10:30am to 11pm and Sunday 10:30am to 5pm.

What Customers say... A lovely cafe. We had a fabulous Sunday lunch today which was delish. Lovely friendly staff. You are doing a great job. We will be back and highly recommend the Sunday lunch. Compliments to the chef. Roma Uzzell Really enjoyed the tapas and cook your own steak. My steak was prime quality and tasty, the tapas were to die for. Atmosphere, service was very good, and I loved the ukulele artist. Definitely recommend this place. Matthew Biggs 15

Michael Morgan of Vale Solicitors has some advice for the often-asked question “Will I have to sell my house if I have to go into a care home?”

THE LAB REPORT

There is no simple answer as everyone’s circumstances are different. If you are not eligible for NHS continuing health care and you have assets of over £50,000 (including your home) then you would be expected to contribute towards the cost of your care. The value of your home will be excluded from the financial assessment if it is still occupied by your spouse, your civil partner, your partner, a relative who is 60 or a relative under 60 who has a disability. If you are a single or widowed person and your other assets and income are insufficient to meet the expense of care, then it may be that your home does need to be sold to cover that expense. You may wish to preserve your home for your children, but the solution is not simply gifting your house to your children’s names. This could well be considered as a deliberate deprivation of assets. A married couple or those in a civil partnership may make provision by creating simple trusts in their wills but any gift or trust arrangement must be approached with great care It is a question of balance. On one hand you might preserve all or at least half of the value of your family home for your children or chosen beneficiaries.

On the other hand, you might inadvertently create a Capital Gains Tax burden for your children and beneficiaries. You would need to rely on the co-operation of trustees if you wanted to sell up or downsize. You might not be able to apply for an Equity Release if you wanted to raise capital. An ill thought out gift can have disastrous consequences. For example, parents might transfer the family home into the sole name of their son on the basis that he would let them live there and would care for them. The father dies and relations sour between mother and son. They end up in court fighting over ownership of the house. It might be a better choice to follow the example of the late Beatrice Miller who simply sold her home and lived on the QE2 for eight years - full medical care, regular meals, new friends and different view every day. The important thing is to take clear advice from a solicitor and consider all your options before making any decisions. Quite literally we all need to put our houses in order and prepare for the future whatever it may bring. At Vale Solicitors we offer a free consultation on property transfer, wills and Powers of Attorney. 16

In the last six years, Adam Elliot has earned a formidable reputation as a leading manufacturer of bespoke kitchens and furniture, in both terms of quality of product and service. We talk to co-owners Steven Elliot Tuck and Peter Adamec.

ADAM ELLIOT

What started out as a business looking after the needs of the local clients has now expanded, and now has clients from West Wales to the east end of London - a real success story. Please describe your approach… It’s about tailoring each project to the individual customer’s needs. We take the time to understand exactly what they want from their kitchen, bedroom or bespoke furniture. Only then can we be certain that the end product meets with their approval. We want the customer to be part of the process and can set up a WhatsApp group that is regularly updated with pictures and videos of furniture as it moves through the production process.

How has the company expanded? Over the past six years we have enjoyed a steady, sustainable growth. When we got together there literally was just the two of us. We now employ six people, from cabinet makers, expert finishers, dedicated showroom staff and our local apprentice. Can customers visit you? Absolutely. We encourage customers to visit our showroom and workshop to see how we work. We have displays of bespoke kitchen furniture in the showroom plus working examples of Quooker taps and the groundbreaking Bora hob. What do you think sets Adam Elliot apart? We believe we give our customers a different kind of experience. It starts with the ability to see first-hand what you are getting, where it is made and how it is made. Read some of our Google, Facebook or Trustpilot reviews from clients throughout the country. Get in touch and experience the difference. 17

Suzanne Dickenson, owner of Trade Price Sofas, has now opened a gorgeous and glamorous shop in Cowbridge called Enchante, selling a variety of high-quality sofas and interiors. Suzanne has someone special to thank for the inspiration of Enchante - a rocking horse she now calls Rupert. Intrigued? We find out more.

ENCHANTE BESPOKE SOFAS & INTERIORS TO THE STARS Firstly, congratulations on your new shop. It’s gorgeous! Thank you. I used to be a regular customer in Cowbridge. It has a great mix of independent shops and I believe Enchante will bring something a little bit special to the town. What do you offer your customers? Trade Price Sofas has two warehouses which supply sofas across the UK. I decided to open Enchante Sofas and Interiors as we had started to attract celebrity customers such as former footballer Rio Ferdinand, Katie Price, as well as Holly Hagan and Charlotte Crosby from the hit reality TV show Geordie Shore. I wanted somewhere a bit more glamorous that these celebrities and prospective customers from the Vale of Glamorgan and beyond could visit.

What’s your background? I’ve been in the furnishing industry for nearly thirty years. We sell sofas and furnishings to discerning customers across the UK. I also sell matching curtains, pelmets, beds, pillows and dining chairs. I can even build a TV into the back of your sofa or bed if the client wishes. Anything is possible. All I need is a gem of an idea and my imagination gets to work. Tell us about Rupert the rocking horse… I first saw a beautiful rocking horse around 27 years ago when I used to visit Xantippe (sadly no longer trading). I’ve always loved rocking horses as they have a lot of history; but the horse carried a high price tag. I always called in whenever I visited to see if he was still there and one day learned that he’d had been sold. 20

When we decided to open in Cowbridge, I wanted to find a rocking horse to bring a smile to my store just like the one I so wanted in Xantippe. I found one in Swansea which had been there for 27 years. I called the gentleman who had bought him for his children and asked him if the horse had a story. His response was ‘not really my dear, apart from I bought him 27 years ago from a little shop in Cowbridge called Xantippi, I was amazed! He now stands proudly in my shop and is the talk of Cowbridge – Welcome home Rupert! What do you think makes Enchante Bespoke Sofas & Interiors so special? Literally anything you see in a glossy magazine can be recreated by our amazing designers and upholsterers at realistic prices. We work with the best fabric suppliers so, whether it’s a traditional leather Chesterfield or something more contemporary or flamboyant, we can help. Myself and my three designers love a challenge, and, with our friendly bubbly personalities, you’ll feel comfortable with us and our prices. We encourage our customers to take the time with us to get exactly what they want.

We created the name Enchante which means “nice to meet you and we welcome all customers to visit us at our beautiful new shop in Cowbridge.

Jenny Lambert Art can be found in Verity’s Court - a real hidden gem in Cowbridge. She always loved to paint, but due to a nine to five job, she hadn’t picked up a paint brush in years. Things have certainly changed.

JENNY LAMBERT ART

When you walk up the stairs of the building in Verity’s Court, you are greeted by three things. Jenny, a wall of bright colours and a lovely black Labrador called Tinker. Jenny tells us more. What do you love about your studio in Verity’s Court? There are lots of art and crafts going on here. It’s got the best gardens of the town and is just something a bit different. My studio is based above Buttercup Cwtch, a lovely gift shop, so it’s a great match for my work. I get on so well with owner Elly - we really gel. I love being here! What made you decide to leave your nine to five job and paint again? I worked in recruitment for about five years, which was well paid but so target driven, that I became unhappy there. I’d always been good at art in school and did it up to A level. However, I didn’t get on with my art teacher and I didn’t paint for years and years after that and only started painting again about five years ago. One of my family members asked me if I could paint something for them. It all kind of started from there really.

Describe your style of painting. I love capturing our beautiful Welsh scenery in bright and vibrant paintings. I do have quite a distinct style. It’s abstract I suppose. It’s a very happy style and a lot of people think it’s quite cartoon like. I suppose they are realistic scenes with a bit of artistic licence. Your dog Tinker features quite heavily in your work? I’ve got a lot to thank Tinker for. She’s been a great inspiration to me. She appears in all my works - I had to include her in everything. Kids come in and when you tell them that she is in every painting, they spend ages looking for her. Adults love it as well. So, do you accept commissions? I do a lot of the little things which do really well as presents like the tea towels and mugs but, thanks to my presence in the studio, I’m now taking commission for peoples’ houses or favourite scenes. Things like favourite beach scenes or places which hold great memories. Customers can buy my existing work in the gallery, order online, or chat to me about a commission. The only things I won’t paint are pets or people - apart from Tinker that is! 22

Nigel Ford and family took ownership of Fonmon Castle on 19th January 2019. As a boy Nigel had always wanted to own his own castle and it was on a day visit with his family when he fell in love with the estate.

FONMON CASTLE In just over a year the castle has fulfilled all previously booked events and then closed in October to undergo a full renovation including a new roof, electrics, plumbing and re-instating the chimneys. A new biofuel boiler will soon be installed in line with their ethos of sustainability. This is carried through to their current project of re-wilding the woodland with the support of local nature organisations. In addition, a brand-new wedding and events facility opened on Saturday 21st March showcasing the castle and new Orchard Tipi and Wedding Village. Due to the Corona Virus, we have postponed the launch of our brand-new family attraction. The medieval farm and dinosaur experience will open later in the year and will include a spectacular horse jousting event, combat display and live re-enactments. We will be hosting this exciting event with horses, knights of honour, company of chivalry, medieval combat display and jousting plus so much more. The farm includes a recreated working medieval grange for children to see and interact with history as costumed staff are available and can talk about what life was like at that time. Don’t forget the dinosaur woods and life sized dinosaurs around the woodland trails. Please keep an eye on our Facebook page for updates on new launch date. Fonmon is a family home which was also designed for parties and entertaining. The village and Orchard Tipi can be used for all kinds of

celebrations and events. It’s not only weddings that Fonmon Castle are renowned for. Exceptional parties and events are also an important part of what the castle does best. The village and tipi offer all the essential elements required for a fun party within close proximity to the castle creating a blank canvas and perfect backdrop to your treasured memories. Whether it’s a special birthday party, engagement, corporate dinner, sporting event, conference or fundraiser, the tipi provides the wow factor for you and your guests. Open air theatre evenings are also planned for later this year. Look at the website for further details of all up-coming events. The convenient location of the castle within twenty minutes of Cardiff makes it an ideal location to hold larger events. There are two interconnected fields spread over seventy acres available to hire separately or together. The fields have direct access from the main coastal road A4226 and tracks laid to accommodate larger vehicles. The Castle is the proud host of the Vale of Glamorgan Agricultural Show held annually in August which regularly attracts crowds of 25,000 people, ideal for a family day out. The event field is available to hire for all kinds of largescale events like concerts and festivals and a full feasibility study is available on request to interested commercial promotors or event organisers. 23

Inflammation in the body isn’t always a bad thing. When we get injured or have an infection, the area becomes red, painful and hot. This is the body’s way of warning us that work is being done and that it needs rest. But it’s not always as simple as that…

REDUCING INFLAMMATION There is another type of inflammation. This type isn’t so obvious. This ‘silent’ inflammation is a part of nearly every chronic condition e.g. auto-immunity, heart disease, arthritis, cancer, allergies, depression, IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome), kidney disease, osteoporosis, obesity and more. What are the causes of inflammation? There are many possible triggers of inflammation and diet is on top of the list:

FOODS & EXAMPLES

Look out for the following Sugar and insulin resistance White sugar Refined carbs White bread, white pasta, white rice, white flour etc. Processed foods Cereals, cheese, tinned foods, pastries, bacon, sausage, ham etc. Omega 6 Meat, poultry, eggs, mayonnaise, corn oil, soya, beans, walnuts, cashews etc. MSG Mono Sodium Glutamate or E621 Found in processed foods, crisps etc. Nightshade Family Tomatoes, potatoes, aubergines, peppers, chilli, tobacco. Lectins Red kidney beans, soya beans, wheat, peanuts, tomatoes.

What can I do to reduce inflammation? Inflammation from foods isn’t inevitable, just follow my helpful diet tips: Include fruit, vegetables, nuts and seeds in your diet. The Mediterranean diet is best! Include cold water fish that are high in Omega 3. Wild salmon, mackerel, herring, sardines, halibut, sea bass and trout. Choose olive oil, hemp seed oil, flax seed oils to cook and drizzle! Include plenty of leafy green vegetables - kale, mustard greens, collard greens, cabbage, broccoli, dark green lettuce leaves (romaine, green leaf, arugula and butterhead).

Gluten Wheat, pasta, bread, crackers etc.

Avoid all intolerances and allergies.

Casein Milk

Avoid margarine containing trans fatty acids.

Aspartame An artificial sweetener: found in low sugar foods, chewing gum etc.

Reduce meat and dairy intake.

Alcohol Wine, beer, gin etc.

Introduce ginger and turmeric to your diet.

Ensure regular, moderate exercise.

The new spring season has arrived at Samantha B, Ewenny. We chatted to owner Samantha to find out what’s on offer from this much-loved Vale boutique.

SAMANTHA B

Fabulous brands that you can’t get anywhere else, plus a great range of accessories; but it’s the outstanding level of customer service from Samantha and her team that truly sets this gorgeous boutique apart from the rest. What’s on offer this spring? It’s been so exciting getting deliveries from our fabulous brands Marble, Pomodoro, Great Plains and Fransa, Anna Montana, Adini, Olsen, Bianca, Brandtex and Signature, and our very sought after and exceptionally wellmade brand Barbara Lebek. What colours should we be buying this season? We’re seeing lots of reds, jade green, denim blue and lots of prints. All of these can be mixed with whites and stone. From dresses to skirts, trousers, jumpers and outwear - we have it all. What about wardrobe staples? It would have to be trousers and jeans. Finding the right fit can be difficult for many women. Luckily, Olsen offer four fits in both jeans and trousers, with Mona or Lisa being the favourites. Marble jeans are also popular and this year they are launching a pair of shorts

in the same fit as the jeans. Perfect for golfers and holidaymakers alike. A great all year rounder is a trouser from Brandtex - so comfy. If we’re talking jeans, the Anna Montana ‘jump in’ jeans are the most comfortable trousers as they’re made of 98% cotton and the softest waistband. Many of our customers are buying three or four pairs at a time. I think that speaks for itself! And to keep off the spring chill? No problem. Our Barbara Lebek gilets and outwear are amazing. The quality is superb. What brings customers back to Samantha B? It might sound like a cliché, but we really do care about our customers. There’s nothing worse than spending good money on an outfit only to turn up at an event and see someone else wearing the same thing. We get to know our clients and wouldn’t let them buy something if we knew there was likely to be a clash. We also wouldn’t say something looked good if it didn’t. We know our clients’ likes and dislikes but are also here to suggest something that they might not have thought of trying. We’re all about honesty here. 27

Samantha B 4 Wick Road, Ewenny CF35 5BL 01656 658388 Open Monday to Saturday 10am to 5pm

Dermaskin has been established for over ten years and has clinics in Cardiff and Bristol. It was established to improve the standard of aesthetic medical services in our capital city and the South West.

DERMASKIN Dermaskin specifically wanted to bring the personalised service back into the sector and allow patients to access high quality treatments without the need to travel to London. We caught up with one of the partners Dr Sid Gautam to find out more. Who are the partners in the business? Myself (Dr Sid Gautam), and Dr Helen Rimmer are the principal partners together with Jen Fitzpatrick who is a long-standing associate clinician. How many staff members do you have and what are their roles? We have two dental nurses - Jordan is head dental nurse and Loren is a senior dental nurse. We also have a number of administrators and receptionists Caren, Emily, Helly and Lizzie What services do you offer your clients? We offer a comprehensive medical service to our patients and clients including vaccination and travel vaccination services. We have high demand for our BHRT - Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy service where we can safely replace hormones that naturally drop as our bodies age. We offer Botox and Dermal Fillers for a variety of medical and cosmetic treatments. We also treat patients regularly in our laser suite, where we have invested in the latest CO2 laser technology to treat sun damaged and prematurely ageing skin. Ablation lasers of the type that we carry are the gold standard in rejuvenating and tightening lax, photo-damaged skin.

We also offer a full dental service including orthodontic treatments. We have seen great demand for orthodontics as people have become aware of the importance of an attractive smile with straight teeth. We also offer in-chair teeth whitening, which is extremely popular all year round as it shows immediate results and makes teeth look amazing. Does the clinic have any specialities? We specialise in medical botox treatments; for headaches and migraines, facial palsy and cosmetic botox treatments, facial contouring with dermal fillers, orthodontics, BHRT, wellness checks, dermal filler treatments and vaccinations. What are your most requested treatments? They would have to be our botox and dermal filler treatments, wellness checks, orthodontics and facial contouring. Do you have a payment plan option? Yes, we have a direct debit option for clients. Do you offer vouchers? Yes we do and they are available via our website in different denominations depending on budget and requirements. What do you think makes your clinic special? We offer a comprehensive line of treatments in-house and can therefore provide clients with an overall ‘makeover’ whilst maintaining the highest levels of clinical safety. 28

We have treated thousands of happy clients over the years and it is our rejection of fad and fly-by-night offerings that have gained us the reputation of the ‘no-bull’ clinic and the go-to place to receive sound and ethical advice. We never sell to our clients but merely provide information that can then be digested at home. We do not have flash sales or last-minute offers, and this has blessed us with an industry leading retention and loyalty rate. We are approachable and affable, and we want the experience to be like that of visiting a friend, albeit one who knows a lot about skin, health and keeping the ageing process at bay. We would love for your readers to join the thousands of happy clients, who we regard as friends, and look forward to welcoming them to Dermaskin.

We really love Llantrisant and had the great pleasure of having an office there for ten years. It is steeped in history. Llantrisant Guildhall is a fascinating new heritage and visitors’ centre that tells the remarkable story of an ancient Welsh hilltop town.

LLANTRISANT

GUILDHALL

The Grade II Listed Building has stood alongside the romantic ruins of Richard de Clare’s Norman Castle for almost seven centuries and is now becoming a major tourist attraction in South Wales. Built in 1346 and rebuilt under the auspices of Lady Windsor in 1773 the Guildhall has been at the heart of Llantrisant life for over 650 years. Today visitors are enchanted by the splendour of a building which has undergone a £1.4million restoration with the help of the National Lottery Heritage Fund and other funding bodies.

The beautiful Georgian Court Room is home to a collection of artefacts and treasures where visitors can learn more about the unique traditions of the celebrated Freemen of Llantrisant whose charter was presented in 1346 by the Lord of Glamorgan shortly before they fought under the victorious Black Prince at the Battle of Crecy. There are exhibitions to the pioneering Dr William Price, while tales of bloodthirsty battles, haunted cell rooms and captured kings of England captivate visitors. Children are thrilled by the variety of interactive displays, treasure hunts and puzzles while also dressing in medieval costume in the Archer’s Hall. Many even attempt an archery competition of their own in a town that boasted an army of trained longbowmen. As a growing resource of historic collections, the Guildhall welcomes many different voluntary groups on a regular basis while visitor numbers are constantly growing. Its dedicated volunteer team includes experts in the field of education who have designed classes, activities and learning modules suited to the new national curriculum which attracts frequent classroom visits. 32

33

With an impressive programme of guest speakers, exhibitions, dinner parties, concerts, guided walks, ghost tours and a host of community activities from medieval fayres to outdoor cinema on its neighbouring Castle Green, Llantrisant Guildhall will delight and fascinate any visitors. The Guildhall is a new licensed wedding venue and from the minute you cross the threshold you’ll realise that the majestic Georgian Court Room is a perfect venue for that all-important moment when you both say “I Do”. The versatility of the building means that you can choose from several locations for your wedding ceremony. Maybe you’d prefer the iconic porchway with your guests gathered at the foot of the steps watching you exchange your vows?

Or the balcony overlooking the Castle Green? This is a romantic setting where marriages have been blessed for over one thousand years and celebrant-led ceremonies are still performed here today. Our dedicated team of experts will put you at the heart of everything we do, ensuring your ceremony is planned to perfection and fulfils all of your hopes and dreams. The Guildhall is also available for private hire, from conferences or corporate meetings to award ceremonies and team-building days. With disabled access to both floors and catering facilities on offer, the range of options is limitless. From conferences to banquets, concerts to classes, the Guildhall is flexible, accessible and well-equipped the ideal canvas for any event. 34

If you’re visiting the Guildhall then it’s always worth planning your day in advance because there are plenty of other great attractions, places to eat and stay in the Llantrisant area. Sustainable glasses will not change the world, people that wear them will. With this in mind, the award-winning Davies and Jones Optometrists in Talbot Green are now stocking a range of sustainable eyewear from Sea2See, made with 100% recycled plastic.

VISIONARIES

Vale Life chats to Ian Jones, Managing Director of the practice to find out more.

is made from 100% recycled ocean plastic and made in Italy, meeting the requirements of any optical market.

Why did you choose to work with Sea2See eyewear? While we carry a fabulous range of designer eyewear at our practices, we are mindful that we need to “Do Good, Feel Good and Look Good”. We have linked up with Sea2See as we wholeheartedly agree with their concerns of sea contamination by plastics. Davies & Jones are committed to doing everything we can to support sustainability. Our ethos has always been to care for our customers, the community and our planet.

Typically who are Sea2See customers? I think a lot of Davies & Jones customers care deeply for the environment. I believe the brand will be very popular.

What are the raw materials of Sea2See glasses? We all need to wake up to the fact that every second 256 kilos of plastic ends up in our oceans. Each pair of glasses

How have the Sea2See glasses been received? The mantra for the Sea2See company is their glasses are sold to people who “Do Good, Feel Good and Look Good” and these are the customers who are buying the products. These are Davies & Jones customers. We all need to do our bit to save our oceans and we support their waste to fashion mantra.

AOP AWARDS 2020

Davies and Jones and were delighted to be finalists and beat off stiff competition from all over the UK. The Awards Ceremony was held in London recently. They would like to thank all of their customers who voted for them. Cath and Dan also took the opportunity of visiting a trade fair to check out new products.

PENCOED HOUSE Karen Beynon and David Murray-Dickson chose Pencoed House for their wedding venue and it’s clear from Karen, that they made the right decision. Being vegan, they needed a venue that catered for their lifestyle choice and the staff at Pencoed House couldn’t have been more accommodating in giving the couple the wedding and wedding breakfast of their dreams and one which the couple and their guests will remember forever. How did you meet? Dave wooed me leaving chocolate in the office fridge and post-it notes. What are your occupations? I am a Support Planner with Learning Disabilities and Dave is an Adult Safeguarding Consultant. Where did you live and where do you live now? We lived in Talbot Green and Penarth and now live in Pontyclun. When and where did David propose? Unbeknown to me, my gran wrote memoirs and Dave found out that my bampi proposed at Oxwich Bay. He took me there and proposed overlooking the beach from Oxwich Bay Hotel. When did you get married? We tied the knot on the 12th October 2019

Why did you choose Pencoed House as your wedding venue? Dave knew Pencoed House and the moment he took me there I fell in love with it. From that first moment there could never have been another venue. The place has romance and magic, it is captivating and draws you in. Plus, they have a massive gin selection! Did you look at other venues before choosing Pencoed House? That first visit won me over. We cancelled other viewings. Did you work with their wedding planner? Yes. From the moment we booked. Their attention to detail was outstanding. Nothing was too much trouble although Jamie told me I hold the record for the most emails sent! On the day everything was how I had dreamed. 40

Did you use their caterers? Yes, we used Cresta Caterers for our wedding breakfast, and they delivered a feast! The standard was unbelievable, high end restaurant quality. Working with Cresta was easy and the relationship between Cresta and Pencoed House was seamless. Everyone commented on the food. The canapés were of equal standard and even made our wedding photos. The evening was catered by the Dirty Vegan Matt Pritchard and filmed for Episode One, Season 2 (on iPlayer). We had loads of fun and Pritch smashed the challenge! How did the day go? Perfect. Literally a dream wedding that was entirely down to Pencoed House Estate who delivered a flawless wedding, and Dave for marrying me of course!

KAREN & DAVID

Quick fire questions Where did you buy your dress/ shoes etc? Wynter Isabelle. Where did Dave buy his (and groomsmen/guests etc) suits? Slaters Menswear. Where did you source your flowers? Andreas Flower Boutique in Penarth. Who supplied the cake? My step mum made one and the Vale Cake Boutique made the Vegan alternative. Who supplied the rings? Dave’s parents which Northern Star rerolled for us. Who supplied the cars? Pencoed House provided us with a beautiful new Bentley. Who was your photographer? The amazing Catherine Wiggins Photography. So much more than a photographer. She was with us from start to finish and captured the full essence of the day. The finishing touch to our dream wedding. What was the most special part of the day? Walking down the aisle between the people we love, into my new life as Mrs Murray-Dickson. Did you and your guests stay at Pencoed House? If so, what was that experience like? The rooms are five-star quality and we were so impressed by the level of cleanliness, design and comfort. What was working with the people at Pencoed House like? It’s easy to see why Pencoed House is considered by many to be the number one wedding venue in Wales. From booking, nothing was too much trouble. They’re clearly experts in their field and gave us total confidence to trust them with the most important day of our lives. In a word, outstanding.

Would you recommend Pencoed House to friends and colleagues? We have friends planning weddings and we tell everyone Pencoed House is the only choice. From aesthetics to service, they nail the perfect wedding. Where did you go on your honeymoon? Ragdale Hall Spa. 41

Home security systems are becoming more affordable and the advancements in app technology mean that monitoring our homes is now in the palm of our hand. We talk to Andrew Nash, Director at VOG Fire & Security.

SECURING THE FUTURE

How did you get into the business? We started the business in April 2014. Matt and I worked together for a company in Cardiff and believed there was a gap in the market for a local company to offer security at affordable prices and with a more personal service. How many people do you employ and what are their roles? There are now nine of us in the VOG team! Matt’s wife Louise is the Office Manager and his son Josh is an apprentice engineer. My Wife Nicola is the Accounts Manager. Lorraine works in Sales. Riccardo, Justin and Nathan are our engineers.

How has the business expanded and why do you think you have been so successful? We’ve expanded naturally, mainly from recommendation. We’ve built a solid reputation for providing great products at reasonable prices. In the past, good security has only been affordable if you had money – that’s no longer the case. Decent systems are much more affordable than they used to be.

What are your hopes and dreams for the future? Just to continue the VOG journey and always aim to be the Cardiff and the Vale’s No.1 security installer.

What type of clients do you look after? We look after both domestic and commercial customers locally in Cardiff and the Vale to Domino’s Pizza Stores as far away as Haverfordwest and Barnstaple. V O G Fire & Security Ltd Unit 3 Palmerston Workshops Palmerston Road, Barry Vale of Glamorgan CF63 2YZ 01446 739586

Do you have any involvement with community security? We protect many businesses and schools in Barry. We also work with the Council on specified projects, and we work in partnership with the Vale of Glamorgan Neighbourhood Watch along with supporting some local charities.

Pencoed House Estate Gives Back

Pencoed House Estate welcomed 100 VIP couples to its awardwinning venue for an evening reception with a difference. The venue took the opportunity to say thank you in a totally unique way to the lucky couples who married there in 2019. Each of the invited guests had the opportunity to win the cost of their wedding back that evening. Welsh Rugby Union and Lions stars Josh Navidi and Gareth Anscombe were there as VIP guests, as well as Emily Murphy, attending as the representative of the chosen charity for the evening, Velindre Hospital. The evening started with canapes from Duncan Gray at Cresta Caterers but also in attendance were Spiro Borg from Spiros Fine Dining Caterers and Emma Jenkins from E J Catering, Dorian The Magician, with Audiojaxx providing acoustic entertainment. With a heart-warming and humorous introduction, Jamie Williams chatted to Emily before she spoke about the charity and what it means to Cancer patients in south Wales. He then hosted a Q&A with the Welsh internationals. Between them Gareth Anscombe and Josh Navidi, picked the winning invite from the multiple envelopes.
