Suzanne Owen, Director at Owen Associates Limited, is passionate about interior design. The company offers a complete interior design service and was established in 2015. Owen Associates has grown a reputation for stylish, contemporary interior solutions.

Suzanne works with clients across South Wales and has recently worked on projects in The Vale of Glamorgan. Vale Life chatted to Suzanne about her career and recent projects.

What areas geographically do you cover?

South Wales and, depending on the project size, further afield in the UK.

What qualifications do you have in your industry?

I have an Interior Design Diploma and two decades of experience in the industry.

What type of projects do you work on? Mainly residential, commercial and hospitality.

What do you enjoy working on most? The projects I enjoy the most are the ones where I am involved at the early design stage where I can preview the layout and offer a cohesive design solution for the project. It’s always better if we manage the project from start to finish.

Do you have a team of professionals that you work with?

I develop the design from concept to detailed design to delivery on site. I try to use as many local tradesmen as possible. I have a tested supply chain of expert tradespeople to deliver all aspects of the interior furnishing; from electrical installation, bathroom fitting, fitted furniture to the finishing touches of curtains and blinds.

What are the benefits of working with someone like yourself?

With twenty years’ experience in the industry I have an expert knowledge and understanding of what is required to deliver a project to the clients’ brief and budget. With this experience I have developed long standing relationships with local supply chains and artisans which are invaluable when working on a project.

Please tell us about the project in the Vale.

The client approached me at the Pre-Tender stage of the project. The site had an existing property in the form of a bungalow which was demolished to allow for the new build of the Georgian style house designed by Richmond Bell Architects. I was appointed early in the project that gave me the ability to influence the internal layouts.

How did the clients hear about you? Through industry contacts.

What did the project involve?

A new build of 580sqm with multiple lounge areas, five bathrooms, kitchen, boot and utility rooms and swimming pool and gym. I completed all aspects of the interior design for the project, detailed all the bathrooms, fitted furniture which included the kitchen, boot room and utility as well as all fitted furniture in the bedrooms and lounge area.

I specified and assisted with the procurement of all the finishes including the lighting, tiling, stair details and soft furnishings.

How long did the process take?

Two years.

Did the clients have their own ideas, or did they leave the project to you?

The clients knew the type of style they wanted to incorporate; we had a shared Pinterest page where they saved images that they liked. We collaboratively took inspiration from these when developing the concept for the project.

What was it about the project that you enjoyed the most?

Seeing my concept visuals transformed into the finished product on site. It was a pleasure working closely with my clients, striving to deliver the interiors to their high expectations.

Following the extensive modelling and visuals we created , it was satisfying seeing the detailing being incorporated throughout the project.

Were any aspects of it challenging?

I started designing the project at the start of the pandemic, we had to communicate through Zoom/MS Teams calls at the start which was much more difficult than delivering and presenting the ideas in person.

I’m am currently working on two renovation projects and an apartment hotel but am always interested in taking on new projects and have capacity moving
