WELCOME
Hard to believe this is our first spring edition since 2020. Life certainly has changed. Talking about change, as we head into the twenties, this has to be one of the strangest decades ever, and sometimes the challenges of modern life can seem, and feel, quite overwhelming. To those of us in our, shall we say, more senior years, we’ve experienced it all before. Fuel shortages and blackouts in the 1970s, the turbulent financial ups and downs of the late eighties and nineties, plus 9/11 and its after-shocks. However, here in the Vale, life goes on as it always does. People thrive, fall in love and make families, and despite the best efforts of the mainstream news channels to indicate otherwise, life is actually quite good for most of us.
When life seems a little grey and low, I do try to take a logical look at what’s around me and count my lucky stars - there’s a lot of good to celebrate. We love walking so we get out and explore the countryside around south Wales as much as possible. It keeps us fit and reminds us how lucky we are to live in such a beautiful part or the world. As much as we love the Vale, we love to travel too - it broadens the mind. We meet new people, forge friendships and life, as they say, goes on. Vale Life Photo Corner Have you seen the Vale Life Photo Corner Facebook Group? Do you love photography? More importantly, do you love the Vale? If the answer to both questions is yes, then we’d love to have you aboard. All we ask is that if you do live outside the Vale of Glamorgan, your images are of the Vale. If you live in the Vale, then we’d love to see shots from far and wide (but preferably local - because that’s what we’re celebrating).
So if you’re an amateur snapper or a pro photographer, it really doesn’t matter to us. It’s a friendly group. Just have a go. We don’t mind what you use to take them either - a film camera is fine (old school) or a digital slr is good, as is a phone (in fact we get some superb submissions from smartphones). We’re also looking for admins, so if you’re keen and have a couple of hours a week, we’d love to hear from you. Vale Life Photo Corner Just search for Vale Life Photo Corner on Facebook.
The shots can be of people, life, landscape, the city, pets, wildlife, weddings - anything really. There are already over 400 members and when we get enough members, we may bring in daily or weekly themes. NEW ST YLISTS FOR POPULAR SALON

This last year has thrown up so many challenges for all hair and beauty salons, with at least 25% of them having to close down, but, according to Coast Hair & Beauty Salon Owner, Stacey, with challenges come opportunities.
THE BIG R EVEAL
COAST HAIR & BEAUTY AT THE CHAPEL We’d heard there were exciting happenings at Coast Hair & Beauty in St Brides Major, so we caught up with Stacey, Creative Director, to find out more. So, what’s the big news? Bounding into spring with the abundance of flowers! We teamed up with Claire from The Bee Orchid to create the fanciest of exterior design. Claire managed to complement our already stunning canvas and transfer my creative vision onto the Pink Chapels shop front. Come take a look and a cheeky selfie! I am delighted to let everyone know that Coast Hair & Beauty is going from strength to strength. Yes, Covid has hit us and everyone else in the hair and beauty industry hard, but we aren’t going to let that hold us back. With that in mind, as part of our growth plans,
Carla Povey, who has worked with us for three years is now a Director in the business and helps me run and grow the salon and brand.
We have a superbly creative team of individuals, and I can’t wait for them to explain to you what they love about Coast later on in this feature!
A decade ago, I founded Coast. Through that time I’ve strived to build a truly amazing salon - it’s been incredibly challenging and amazing. Three years ago two crazy things happened; firstly, we had the incredible opportunity to move Coast to The Chapel and, more importantly, Carla joined the team. Carla joining the team was the most significant thing that’s happened to the salon over the last ten years. Little did I know, ha ha! Carla has added the spice to my sugar to allow Coast to be exactly as I always wanted it to be! One of the major struggles that every salon has is building a great team. Carla’s involvement has created the environment for the best team that we have ever had.
Gina and Kinga have been at Coast for five and six years respectively. These are the superstars of Coast and their dedication to the salon is second to none.
8
What makes Coast special? It’s really an extension of what I was talking about earlier. Carla has been instrumental in helping to organise Redken education programs, fashion shoots, and team building trips, taking time off the salon floor to refine our craft. In turn this helps develop the team’s skillset and confidence which enhances the client’s experience. We recently welcomed Sorley Rome, Designer Stylist, to the team.
“Carla’s involvement has created the environment for the best team that we have ever had.” Sorley has an active routine that he says brings freedom and mindfulness. He also believes that continuous learning is one of the fundamental keys to meaning and happiness, along with friends, family and responsibilities. He has been in the industry for nine years and is fitting in so well with the team and our clients love him! We are excited to watch him grow on his Coast journey. How do we book? We have several avenues to book, via phone, email, Facebook or Instagram message, but the fastest and easiest way to book is to visit our website and book a consultation via our online booking platform. You can book all of your appointments in advance and have full visibility to our prices and detailed services.
Carla Managing Director I absolutely love where I am right now with Coast, I really have been allowed to shine which has translated into my growth. I have been Managing Director for over a year now. Stacey who decided to share her already successful salon with me which enabled us to create our vision and dreams to develop and grow an even more incredible salon. We strive to move the business forward towards the same long-term goals. I am proud to say we have a fabulous team who are all talented hair artists uniquely. They are passionate and dedicated, which is the most important attribute to Coast being a success.
Holly Designer Stylist I love that we are given the opportunity to progress our skills with regular Redken training. I also love that we are like a little family which makes the perfect team! I am so happy with the clientele I am building up as a stylist which gives me the platform to grow.
Sorley Designer Stylist Coast is the perfect base for finding a balanced lifestyle! Its somewhere to learn and grow. I love helping people find the perfect colour and style all whilst having fun! Being part of this place helps everything else fall into place! Kinga Artistic Designer Working at Coast I can do what I love, I have more motivation to achieve my goals. I know what I’m saying! However, believe me, the pride and joy of every single smile on the clients’ faces makes it even more enjoyable. Coast also gives me additional motivation to develop as a stylist, be better and bring more and more cool results in every area of this business.

Gina Artistic Designer I have been at Coast for five years and love working here. We constantly have access to online education and face to face Redken training in salon and in the Loreal Academy in London. This allows us to be the first to show off the up-and-coming trends and hair colours. I also love the bond we all have as a “family” not just as a team, but the friendships we build with our clients. 9
Casey Young Stylist I love the atmosphere at Coast! We are like a family in this amazing place. I enjoy seeing familiar and friendly faces and being part of this cool team that bring so much joy to clients. It makes me so happy when clients leave with big smiles on their faces
Leah Young Stylist I enjoy working at Coast because it’s not just like a workplace, it feels like home. I love being surrounded by like-minded people that always push me to do my best. I’m excited for my future at Coast.

First time at Coast and I was made to feel totally relaxed by Stacey. I love my hair colour and cut and will definitely be going back. Charlotte-Foley
I have tried various salons over the years and have never felt this with any other stylist so resorted to home colours, so Kinga had her work cut out. Lisa Phillips
After box dying for years, went to Stacey aka “hair guru” to reverse years of neglect and damage. Amazing transformation, haircut, colour and condition. Life-long client. Kim Milhench

With Cara’s reassurance and support, I finally got my dream of having hair extensions. It was the best decision I’ve ever made! She’s given me my confidence back and so much more. Amy ML
I came for a haircut at Coast for the first time today and absolutely loved it. My hair looks amazing! The whole experience was relaxed and friendly. Emma Webster

Fontygary Leisure Park was established in the 1950s and has always been a popular destination for locals and visitors alike. Seventy years on, the park has been transformed into something quite special.
FONTYGARY
When Tim McIlveen left the army, he was appointed as Managing Director of Fontygary in 1995. By 2004 he had completed a management buyout. He was subsequently joined by wife Jane and sons Tom and Mark as Directors. As Rhoose residents, we’ve been following the developments at Fontygary with great interest. We caught up with Tim to find out more about the exciting transformation of this much-loved 4-star leisure park. What has prompted the recent investment in the park? Just after acquiring Fontygary, we were able to purchase a holiday park in France. The complications of running a business in another country were made trickier still during the recent pandemic. Somewhat reluctantly we took the decision to sell the French park and to invest the proceeds in the ongoing improvements at Fontygary. What have been the major improvements? Our aim has always been to develop the park to the highest possible standard for all our customers, be they holiday homeowners, tourers or the general public.
We have really invested in making Fontygary completely family friendly and over the last few years we have added ten pin bowling, an 18-hole adventure golf course, indoor soft play, a coffee shop, function room and a fabulous bar, kitchen and terrace. The swimming pool remains too. All areas of our central facilities complex are open to the general public, and we have options for all the family come rain or shine. In school holidays we also run special ticketed events and we have live music on site every weekend. We have also just started work on a deli and convenience shop which should open in late June. By July we hope to have completed refurbishments of the park maintenance buildings and launderette. In addition, we have been able to purchase some seventy extra acres of land to the East of Fontygary. We hope in due course to offer some limited additional tourism features but also to maintain and improve much of this area as public open space for both our customers and local residents, plus of course their dogs! 18
By the summer our total investment in Fontygary over the past few years will exceed £5 million pounds, much of which is a massive thank you to our customers who have stuck with us throughout the pandemic.
“You don't need a caravan to enjoy Fontygary Leisure Park though, all our facilities are open to the public.”

Please tell us about the new style restaurant. What will the food offering be? We have something for everyone - hot drinks, snacks, toasted filled croissants, sandwiches, salads, paninis in the coffee shop which is open all day, every day for eat in or takeaway daily 9am - 6pm. In Shoreway bar, kitchen and terrace we have small plates, grill, children’s menu, fresh salads and burgers, food is served 12 noon - 3pm and 5pm - 8pm in Shoreway Monday - Saturday. Also, breakfast from 9am - 11am Wednesday - Sunday. Sunday lunch is from 12 noon - 4pm. There are different zones to the restaurant. Please expand on these. Can people just have coffee and cake for example? You can eat and drink everywhere in the restaurant. We recommend booking at the weekend, particularly for Sunday lunch. Otherwise, you can normally walk in and order food and drinks at the bar. Coffee and cake are an option, just as a glass of white wine and a bowl of olives is too! The outdoor terrace is for walk in’s only and drinks can only be ordered out here via the Fontygary app. We also have a limited dog friendly area and all children under twelve should be accompanied by an adult.
What’s the booking system? Do people need to book online, or can we just turn up? We recommend that you book for groups of eight guests and over as areas to seat large parties are limited. Sunday lunch booking is a must. If you know you are definitely coming to Fontygary then bookings are highly recommended at weekends and in school holidays. You can book via the website very easily to ensure you are not disappointed. The décor is gorgeous. What inspired the look? Our designers used the natural ambience, environment and coastline around us as inspiration. The colours used reflect those of the sea and there is a slight nautical and maritime theme to the design. If you study the pictures, you will also see many scenes from Fontygary taken over the last fifty years on the walls, it is interesting to see how the place and the fashions have changed! How many new staff have been employed and are they from the local area? So far, we have employed around sixty new staff from Rhoose and the surrounding towns and villages. We are always on the lookout for more though. 20
What will the opening hours be? It varies per area, best to look at the website for up-to-date information. Do you have spaces that could be hired for private functions? We do have a function room available for hire Monday to Thursday currently. Bayview has a superb private balcony overlooking the coast with its’ own bar and entrance. We also have a raised area in Shoreway that is perfect for parties of up to forty guests to have a celebration meal. What do you think will attract new visitors to the new look facilities? Our aim throughout this process has been to offer our customers the highest possible standards but at a reasonable price and in stunning surroundings. We very much hope that word will spread! Fontygary Leisure Park Rhoose, near Barry Vale of Glamorgan CF62 3ZT 01446 710386
Is the redevelopment now complete or are there further plans for the future? Over our years in this business, it has become abundantly clear that you must never rest on your laurels and think things are complete. The best are always looking to improve, evolve and move forward – we endeavour to be the best that we can be!

Rhoose School Our lad went to Rhoose School and loved it. He always says it was his favourite growing up, so we’re delighted to hear that it’s going from strength to strength. Last year, with the support of Covid-19 funding, they were able to purchase the first phase of a wellbeing village - the Tipi. This amazing space has become somewhat of a feature in the Rhoose skyline and has instantly given us a far greater opportunity to get the children outdoors and will be used for events - the upcoming street party for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee being the latest example.
All breeds are catered for, large or small, in a safe and clean environment with the added benefit of air conditioning.

And there are new developments! ‘Nurture Pod’ is designed to be a therapeutic space for small group or one to one sessions. It provides a quiet, private space for children to undertake specific therapeutic activities in a gently stimulating environment. As such it has been a most welcome addition to the school site. “Following the launch of our first container, the next step on our journey to support the development of healthy bodies and minds in our children is ‘Nutrition Pod.’ The second converted shipping container will house a childfriendly kitchen where small groups of pupils will be able to prepare and cook food in a safe environment. The school hope to team up with local businesses and invite chefs in for cooking workshops.” 24

NickyBright.com and Nicky Bright Holidays were established in 2020. Starting a business during a pandemic might seem a bit bonkers but this hasn’t been the case for Nicky. Quite the opposite. We get out the Ray Bans.
THE FUTURE’S BRIGHT
What is your background? I started many years ago when my first child was born in 1995 with a small business called Stylish Stencils. It was at the time when Changing Rooms was popular on television. I enjoyed painting furniture and, very quickly, was spotted. I created a portfolio of beautiful bespoke furniture designs for interior designers, featured in monthly “interior home makeover” magazines offering styling tips and ideas. I went on to tutor paint-effect courses at my local college. I was also featured on a home DIY makeover TV show called Our House.
The business grew and I was soon styling show-homes for some of the biggest property developers in the country. I was creative and loved what I did. Also, I have a background in retail management and estate agency, so the mixture of sales, business, property and corporate store standards and principles have helped me with my own business when I’m working and creating a look.
“I guarantee to increase their property income” 26
What services do you offer? NickyBright.com is the styling and staging side to my business - many properties for sale or rent lose money or income because they aren’t styled to attract a customer. Estate Agents will keep reducing the price of a property until it is sold, the only loser is the seller. The estate agent’s job is to find a customer but, more often than not, the property doesn’t attract a viewing because the images are so unattractive simply because the property has not been prepared for sale.
When you look at the pictures of properties currently for sale you see how the family live. It often shows they have no space, storage and the home is unorganised. This is the reason many properties don’t sell because they are pointing out to the viewer the problems with the property. They’re saying “this house isn’t for you” and, with a swipe, it’s on to the next property. A well-staged property showing a “lifestyle” that a family may enjoy is a game changer and much more likely to attract a viewing.
NickyBright.com showcases my services of styling and staging a property for sale, rent, holiday letting and home makeover. I also have a new collection of home accessories coming soon available to purchase from my website, beautiful unique items. NickyBright.com is a resource for property investors and homeowners who require a property to be styled and dressed ready for sale or to attract a booking. Estate Agents don’t offer a service to declutter and turn the property into a hot property and sale. 27
Please tell us about Nicky Bright Holidays… Nicky Bright Holidays is aimed at families and friends looking to celebrate an occasion such as a birthday, anniversary, or a short break with friends. Do you offer this service to the commercial and private sectors? Yes, I’m currently setting up a pub as a twenty sleeper Airbnb for a brewery. Many of my property landlords have large portfolios with a mixture of different services I offer to them, from property flipping (selling very quickly) to holidy lets and rentals. Please describe a typical Nicky Bright project… I turned a property from one bedroom to three bedrooms recently, completely ripped everything out and redesigned it as a holiday let, in just eight weeks! Completely turned it around into a beautiful property adding £100,000k to the valuation which I am delighted with. I currently have four holiday cottages to style, a pub, an Airbnb, and a property extension on a house into a rental apartment. Why should a client choose you for this service? Because I guarantee to increase their property income. Do you have a bank of suppliers that you work with? I source everything myself. Each property is unique. I won’t finish a property until I find everything it needs to make it look amazing. I can stand in a property and feel it - a property has an energy, I work with the energy and I’m able to visualise just how to transform it into a home.
What do clients get from a Nicky Bright project? A great experience. I just want all my guests to walk into my holiday lets and smile - the guest is my only thought. I put them first. Whether it’s the quality of bedding, comfort of the mattress, towels, cups, even the fresh coffee they drink. My current holiday let, The Old Stables Pembroke, has everything a family needs along with the experience of something different inside. I’ve added a ‘loft net’ so the children can relax and watch TV. There’s a beautiful bathtub for mum to relax in, Sky sports and a beer fridge for dad, oh and not forgetting a bedroom for the dog! Why would a client come to you for this service? I put them first and give them the high standards they expect and want. What do you love about what you do? Putting a smile on people’s faces. What do you think make your offerings special? Guests arrive and within minutes of entering they send me a message to say how pleased they are. My guests return, I know most of them by first names. Do you have customer testimonials that you could provide for each business? Yes, on my website, Nicky Bright Holidays, I have audio testimonials from landlords and guests. My Google page also has reviews. 28

It is perhaps easy to take our ears for granted, often not paying them too much attention until a hearing problem begins to affect our well-being.
CLEAR HEARING SOLUTION
For audiologist Marina Storina, founder of Clear Hearing Solution and Director of Well-being, Hearing and Balance Clinic, treating hearing issues goes far beyond understanding the mechanics of the ear and firmly believes our hearing gives us an emotional connection to the world and the people around us as well as improving our quality of life and the lives of others. Moscow-born Marina studied at Swansea University where she earned a BSc in Audiology and completed further MSc training in treating advanced balance disorder and auditory rehabilitation. After working in the NHS for over fourteen years, she decided to start her own practice. Clear Hearing Solution moved into Goodsheds on the Barry waterfront in September 2020 and has developed a loyal client base throughout the Vale of Glamorgan and beyond. Marina offers a range of treatments including microsuction for infections and blockages, hearing aids, balance rehabilitation, tinnitus as well as specialist glue ear treatment for children.
TESTIMONIALS
What patients say… “Marina demonstrated excellent knowledge and understanding of my issues, which made me feel relaxed and confident I was in safe hands.” “I took my 13 year old son to Marina for micro-suction. She was amazing with him and made him feel at ease.” “Best £65 I’ve ever spent. I would definitely recommend her.” Charity project plans… Meanwhile, Clear Hearing Solution is about to embark on an interesting new development as Marina is in the process of planning to fund a charity project designed to provide free hearing care for children. It’s going to prove an interesting time for the company so please watch this space. Clear Hearing Solution Unit 32, Goodsheds Hood Road, Barry CF62 5QR On the 2nd floor, next to the lift 01446 688 450 info@clearhearingsolution.com www.clearhearingsolution.com
For Marina, helping patients accept hearing loss is an important part of the relationship between audiologist and patient. A pleasing aspect of the work at the clinic is the number of extremely positive comments from patients praising the care and attention they received during their consultations and procedures.

The Gallery Events, on Barry’s Broad Street, is excited to launch their very special intimate venue. As a team, they have over thirty years’ experience delivering events, weddings, parties and special occasions.
THE GALLERY
Can you supply a Wedding Coordinator? Yes! Our passionate wedding coordinator, Jadeine, is on hand and she planned her own big day, so she fully understands the emotions and commitments needed to make a day really special. Tell us about your Bridal Packages… We have three amazing, bespoke bridal packages from £1,000 to hire the building, and our diamond package costs £7,000. All our packages are available to view on our website, (www.thegallery.wales).
The Gallery was purchased by CUBE (Heroes Rights) a not-for-profit organisation that was set up to work with the community of Barry and the Vale to support struggling families. By holding your special day at this venue, not only are you benefiting from this highly skilled team but also supporting your community by paying it forward as profits feed back into CUBE in delivering highly needed support for the local community, such as children and young people, helping families who are in need of additional support, as well as the coffee shop that supports anyone that needs to stop by for a drink and someone to talk to. Vale Life chatted to Chief Executive Tammi Owen to find out more. Congratulations on the new garden space, what work has been done to transform it? Our Italian courtyard has taken over four months in its development. We have built in seating, beautiful water feature and log cabin where you can relax, listen to the wonderful water whilst taking in the aroma and colours of our botanical garden.
What can The Gallery offer the happy couple? Couples can arrange a pre-visit to look at the venue, chat with the events team and enquire about the different options available. We pride ourselves on being upfront and ensuring there are no hidden fees. We also understand the importance of choosing the right venue and the right team which is why we offer unlimited viewings, including evenings, to make sure you are as confident as we are that you’ve made the right choice.
We have years of wedding, venue styling and hosting experience between our dedicated events team. We have worked together planning and creating bespoke and tailored events - we have tons of experience. We hosted our very own wedding fayre recently and took an instant booking for a happy couple’s wedding service and reception.
Does The Gallery provide catering or can the couple bring in their own? The Gallery can create bespoke wedding food packages or a couple can bring their own caterers. We would ask that they spend some time with our catering manager, so they are familiar with our health and hygiene processes and how our appliances operate. We can provide a list of local suppliers who offer home grown and sustainably sourced produce. With our in-house catering team, we are able to work with the couple to develop a menu that suits their needs and accommodate any intolerances. What is the capacity and when can couples book the venue for their big day? Capacity is 50 guests for a wedding, and up to 100 guests for a night-time event - we are licenced for 120 people in total. Weddings can be held during the week, weekends, or Bank Holidays. Our is to offer a relaxed and romantic atmosphere that achieves their vision. 31

We have some excellent cafés, bistros and restaurants in the Vale and there are new ones opening all the time. And don’t forget your local butcher – you can’t beat our locally reared beef and lamb.
EAT OUT EAT IN We all have a favourite eating place. One that stands out from the crowd for all the right reasons. Hilary and Iain’s in Ogmore-by-Sea is certainly one of ours.
FOODIE FAVOURITE
We’ve been frequenting this brilliant little bistro/café forever. It’s really quite awesome. Sometimes we sit outside, sometimes in. It’s cool, quaint and Hilary and Iain are the loveliest hosts. If you haven’t tried it, you really should.
Gluten free! The couple’s supremely popular gluten free fish and chips is on the menu for both dine-in and takeaway so, for those with an intolerance, your favourite fish supper is definitely on the menu.
Sunday best… We still maintain that this fab bistro/ café serves up possibly the best Sunday lunch in the Vale. The beef is just awesome, the lamb incredible and the veg is just how you’d hope a homecooked Sunday lunch would taste (and don’t get us started about the gravy #OMG). And, if you have a sweet tooth, Hilary’s desserts are sensational.
We’d add that Iain’s gluten free gravy is just as tasty as the regular option (we've certainly tried and tested it).
Music to our ears… The music is always good at this cool bistro overlooking the sea and there’s talk of some live performances in the near future (Iain does love his guitars), so follow on social media for updates.
Keeping safe… Hilary and Iain made sure that customers were safe during recent times and have kept the dividers between tables etc “just to be safe”. They really do care. Hilary and Iain by the Sea 87 Main Road Ogmore-by-Sea CF32 0PW 01656 880661 HilaryAndIainBySea 32

As a regular customer of Glenn Griffith in Dinas Powys you’ll already appreciate the quality of their meat, but this amazing indie butcher has much more to offer.
GLENN GRIFFITH
ROASTS, BARBEQUES & MORE This much-loved independent community butcher serves a wide range of traditional cuts of freerange pork, beef, lamb and poultry, and has been doing so for over four decades. But locals also tell us that they also produce a great selection of kebabs, burgers and curries. Owner Glenn, works with his father Mark, and a talented team producing some of the best deli-style products available in the Vale and has an evergrowing clientele. Prepared to the highest standard… We’re not surprised, this third-generation traditional butchers takes great pride in supplying customers with only the very best locally-sourced quality meats and insist on the highest standards of animal welfare from all suppliers. Outdoor catering Glenn says, “We also offer catering to customers and can provide a fullyequipped on-site van packed with delicious meaty treats. Everything is bespoke and we can design a menu specially for any occasion.” Their chicken curries are legendary, and they can cater for several hundred people.
Speciality meats and gluten free options Renowned for their Welsh salt marsh lamb, traditional sausages (plenty of options, including gluten free - pork and Piri-Piri is a favourite), and cornfed chicken. We’re big fans of their rib-eye steaks - delish! Hog roasts and barbeques too! Besides their amazing chicken curry, their hog roasts are also causing a stir. “Our hog roast is always a winner. It’s a great tasting addition to any function –super tasty and filling in spring and summer. It’s a little bit of theatre. After all basic buffets can be a bit boring,” says Glenn. “We always go the extra mile to ensure customers have a really special day,” adds Mark. So whether it’s you big breakfast, tradional roast, barbeques or event catering Glenn Griffith can deliver. TESTIMONIALS
What customers say… The quality of the meat is absolutely incredible! This is the best butcher around! We’ve been customers for forty years!

In their other life, Chris J Birch and Jak Bjornstrom manage holiday properties just outside Cowbridge. But after feedback from guests, they decided to upcycle an old building and Fredwell’s was born.
FREDWELL CAFÉ
We don’t need much of a reason to stop and ‘take tea’ for half an hour so caught up with Chris over a bit of homemade cake one sunny morning in April looking out onto the beautiful, rolling Vale countryside. Chris you described Fredwell’s, prior to renovation, as an “old muck heap with a lid on it”. Yes, I did, but it’s a little more stylish now. Thankfully, Jak, who is an interior designer for TV productions, took on the design duties and the 25-seat café is now filled with tables made from reclaimed scaffolding and vintage rugs in front of large French doors which look out onto a patio and the stunning countryside. How did it come about? One of the most consistent bits of feedback we heard from our visitors was “it’s lovely, but wouldn’t it be great if we could stop and enjoy a coffee, or grab a little breakfast without having to go offsite?”. Everyone loves the location. We get on really well with the landowner here and he offered us the opportunity to renovate this tiny unit just to see what we could do with it. The rest, as they say, is recent history – here we are, and visitors seem to really like it. What is the offering at Fredwell Café? Fredwell is a fantastic fusion of French boulangerie and a Welsh artisan bakery, built from the mutual love of France of Jak and I.
What can customers expect to find? At Fredwell, we hope you’ll experience a relaxed, calm atmosphere, quirky and interesting seating and fantastic fusion of French and Welsh foods, all served up on locally produced crockery.
We hear your coffee is a bit special… Our blend of Coffee is unique to Fredwell and is created from a blend of Jamaican, French and Welsh blend beans to give the most unique, strong and developed balance of flavours available. We mix those with our own designs on drinks including the incredibly popular ‘Lavender Latte’ and the ‘Pistachio Latte’. Do you source your produce locally? We try to incorporate and celebrate as much ‘local’ as possible. Our coffee is roasted and blended just over ten miles away. Our cakes are baked by the fantastic Isabel who’s just over a mile from here and all of our meat comes from IG Nicholas Butchers on Cowbridge High Street. Our lovely mugs are made by Matthew Jones Ceramics in Barry and the artwork you see on our walls is created by local artists. Are all your cakes homemade? Only one of our cakes isn’t made by our team and that’s simply because we want to offer an entirely gluten free, vegan option and, because of our kitchen size, it’s best that we outsource that. Everything else is made by Jak, Isabel, Becky and our team.
What’s the most popular dish ordered? Pancakes and French Toast are by far our most popular breakfast items. They’re huge and fly out of the door from the moment we open. They’re made fresh each time and our pancakes use buttermilk so they’re American style but with our special twist.
Do you deliver? Yes, we’re able to offer a delivery service within selected times. Please get in touch by email to find out more.
Please tell us about your pizzas, we hear great things! Our pizzas are our most popular evening item but they’re quickly being surpassed by our Halloumi and Moving Mountains veggie and vegan burgers. Even if you’re not veggie, we think you’ll love them.
Is there anything else you’d like readers to know? We don’t have highchairs or a child’s menu. We don’t take reservations in the daytime. What you see is often what’s available so if there’s nothing free, maybe pop over to Chase Living for fifteen minutes and pop back to see if anything’s changed.
Are you dog friendly? We’re super dog friendly. All we ask is that they’re clean, on a lead and kept clear of the walkways.
All of our Menu can be adapted and substituted for vegetarian and vegan alternatives and our menu does give basic information for allergies, however you should ensure you inform our team prior to ordering to receive a full list of ingredients and preparation requirements before ordering. Do you offer gluten free items? Gluten intolerances are a part of life and we do keep a small stock of gluten free items but please remember that we’re a patisserie so there’s gluten everywhere and although we do our very best, we can’t guarantee that cross contamination won’t happen. Same with allergens. Please let us know before you order if you have an allergen. It’s vital as our kitchen and bar work heavily with nuts, seeds, egg, milk and gluten so we want to ensure you’re safe!
Unless we come to you, please pop up to the bar and we’ll take your order, then bring everything to you. Everything is freshly prepared, so food orders take around twenty minutes. If we’re full, please be mindful that there’ll be orders in front of you and that time may increase. We found you quite easily. You’re just off the A48… Yes, we’re at Pant Wilkin Stables, Cowbridge. Access by road via the A48 near the turning for St Hilary. Follow the signs down onto the farm. Driving to us? Don’t follow the SatNav. Unless you fancy turning around in a narrow lane, you’ll heed that bit of advice!
If you use a Wheelchair or similar, please be aware that we have a PVC doorframe and therefore you’ll see a lip at the base of our door (around 2 inches in height) before entering the premises. Our Toilet facilities are also up one step to access. There’s no way of adapting these further (access, flood and conformity restrictions) so please allow for this when visiting us.
If you’re walking, feel free to walk through Aberthin, up Llanquian Road and on to the Stable Yard where you’ll find us.
What do you think makes Fredwell Café special? What sets it apart? The atmosphere and ambience makes Fredwell something extra special. It’s a stunning setting to enjoy a cake, coffee or breakfast. You really need to pop in to appreciate how relaxed the entire place is. We pride ourselves on a French style service; that way, you get a freshly prepared meal in the time it takes to bake it and with a stunning view to look at while you wait.

Sam knows which clothes suit me. It’s always an enjoyable experience.
I was one of Sam’s very first customers. She knows what suits me. There are lots of boutiques in the Vale but not many of this quality for the more mature lady. I’ve never felt pressured to buy and there are no parking charges!
Such fantastic service! Every colour and fabric is covered. My favourites are Olsen, Capri, Barbara Lebek. With help from Sam, my new season’s wardrobe is sorted!

Barry’s High Street is enjoying a renaissance. There are some brilliant new indie businesses opening and there’s a real buzz about it right now. I’m a Barry girl born and bred. I moved to Rhoose when I got married but my heart belongs in Barry. I used to remember having some pocket money and going “downtown” to spend it. I always made my way to the Dan Evans Store (Dannie’s as it was affectionately known then) and managed to find something to spend my money on. Having always loved clothes, I particularly loved the fashion section. If I remember rightly, it was Topshop/ Miss Selfridge (please correct me if I’m
wrong). Dannie’s was several floors of department store heaven, and really had something for every room in the house. It was fabulous and I miss it dearly. Holton Road is starting to get better with a smattering of new independent shops popping up here and there but without a progressive and supportive strategy on rents and rates, I fear it will be almost impossible for more independents to start up and stay there. We shall see.

One area of Barry that has always been very popular is the High Street. As I didn’t have access to a car when I was young, I couldn’t get to venture down there but boy have I made up for that over the years! The middle section of the street has always been the most popular and has always had a good turnaround of businesses but I’m happy to see that more businesses are popping up towards the top end. Isn’t it strange that some people have an aversion to walking across a road or junction? It’s like an invisible barrier.
Goodsheds was a fantastic incubator for their businesses but there came a point when they thought they could expand. Well done to Hayley, Gemma and Rebecca. I’m sure they’ll do well! There’s also a new bar opening (96 High Street) which looks gorgeous. I’m confident this will be well supported given that the area really would welcome a quality indie bar. The Premier Stores has also been taken over and lots of money has been spent giving it a refurb. It even has its own chilled alcohol section. Another very welcome addition.
I was delighted to see three businesses transfer from the Goodsheds to open up in the street. Zac and Bella, Crafted Arts and Siempre Aromas are welcome additions. The owners said that
There’s lots of investment going into Barry. Towns only thrive because we support them. I know where I’ll be spending some of my pocket money. How about you?

As a local resident or a visitor to Barry’s iconic High Street, you may have noticed the local Premier Store having a major upgrade.
PREMIER GETS BETTER
“Another quality addition to a superb local high street.”
Well, after months of extensive refurbishment, the much-improved Premier Store was opened in March. And what an improvement! Completely renovated and refitted, the new owners have invested in a redesigned layout and all new fittings. Conveniently, the counter is now to the left as you enter and there are new shelves packed with all your favourite brands. One new welcome addition is a walkin chiller room at the rear where there is a large selection of wines, beers and lagers kept refreshingly chilled and ready for consumption. There are some great bargains too. While we were visiting, we snapped up a 1.5kg washing up powder at a cheaper price than local supermarkets. As they say, it pays to shop around and certainly locally. You’ll find a good selection of frozen goods too so you should never be struggling for something for tea.
The general consensus is that the new store is most welcomed and another quality addition to what is a superb local high street with plenty of excellent independent shops. We’re certainly impressed. 44

At her workshop, Gemma creates beautiful rings, bracelets, necklaces, and earrings and has a great selection for you to choose from. She can also custom make any of the items in any style or size as well as personalising the jewellery using their precious metal engraving machine. Personalisation includes fingerprints, handwriting, hand-print charms and much more. Engraving can be done while you wait so if you need a personalised gift in a hurry, that’s all possible. All products are sourced from great UK suppliers which is also important to her. Jewellery repairs also undertaken.
As well as the gorgeous jewellery, Gemma also stocks a great range of gift ideas including gift cards, jewellery holders and bags. After many requests, Gemma will also soon be launching her jewellery workshops. After being locked down for so long, we all need experiences to fill our lives again and what better way than to learn a new skill in a fun and welcoming environment – and you get to make something you’ll love!

Since our last visit to Cross Farm Nursery, owner Charlotte has certainly not rested on her Laurels. Cross Farm is expanding with some exciting new additions.
CROSS FARM NURSERY
PUTTING A SPRING IN OUR STEP
Owner Charlotte England with Dave Phillips
A visit to this lovely nursery is never a chore. The overwhelming feeling is excitement. If you love plants and flowers like us, you’ll know what joy it is to go hunting for your new spring and summer basket fillers. Refreshingly, Cross Farm Nursery isn’t too big. It is expanding, but in the right areas: more plant selection, complementary products – that kind of thing. As I believe we said before, if you’re looking for a coffee shop, and twenty outlet businesses, this isn’t for you. It’s a gardener-friendly, compact and bijou nursery which sells just about everything you need to bring your garden back to life after the ravages of winter. New at Cross Farm Nursery… Well, the roof blew off in the storm so that’s new (now fixed!) and the poly tunnel has been lengthened, accommodating more stock and an expanded range of plants and larger selection of compost and manure etc.
Outside there is a good choice of new gravels and ornamental rocks and stones. If you’re building a rockery or you want a mini-Stonehenge, Cross Farm could be very handy indeed. Vegetables, herbs and fruit trees Cross Farm sell a lot of baby veg plants and the quality really is superb. If I had to praise them for one thing, I’d say they really care about the plants they sell. They are in the very best condition. Their selection of fruit trees is also very good, and they offer an excellent selection of herbs. Flowers, pots and hanging baskets If you think their veg is good, their hanging baskets and flower selection is even better. From annuals and bedding to perennials and shrubs, you’ll find plenty to choose from. There is a wide selection of succulents, ornamentals, and ferns too – although they have become quite hard to acquire due to the vagaries of transportation recently. “Everything’s gone up!” says Charlotte, “but we have 46
great suppliers, and they look after us. And because we buy regularly and in good quantity, we remain competitive.” Peat free compost One of the most popular purchases this year will be peat-free compost and the Cross Farm team have gone out of their way to stock good supplies. “We’d love to sell just peat-free,” says Charlotte. “But it’s really hard to get hold of being in high demand. The industry is getting there though and we’re confident that supplies will be more readily available in coming years. We really do have to protect our peat bogs.” What we love… We love browsing their poly-tunnels and we always find something special. There’s an excellent array of ceramic and terracotta pots and plenty of advice should you need it. They have a very good selection of seeds too. Basically, they’re just lovely to drop in - always helpful and cheerful. One of those places you feel better for visiting.
Source local, shop local! They also sell local eggs and local honey. Both are excellent and well worth trying. This is one of the areas Charlotte wants to develop. So, if you are a local producer, please get in touch. Charlotte says: “We’re a family business and, moreover, we’re keen gardeners. We love gardening as much as our customers.” While there, I asked a lady and a gentleman (unrelated) what they like about Cross Farm Nursery? They universally agreed it was “the quality of the plants”. Indeed, as we find on every visit, the plants are well watered and well fed so you’re virtually guaranteed to get them in the best possible condition, and this is especially important as temperatures rise through spring into summer. So if you’re looking for a gardenerfriendly nursery that’s open all year ‘round at the heart of the Vale, pop into Cross Farm, we hope you like it as much as we do. 47

Vale Laser Clinic in St Athan has built up an enviable reputation and client list since the business started. Vale Life chatted to one of owner Emma Griffiths’ clients, Eliza Austin of Llantwit Major, to find out more.
VALE LASER CLINIC
How did you hear about Vale Laser Clinic? 2020 found me experiencing the worst acne flair up I had ever had. After trying numerous supermarket ‘treatments’ and doctor prescribed ointments, I was at a complete loss of what to do and my confidence had been severely depleted. Looking back, I was so thankful for the Covid lockdowns because at least it meant I could stay home where nobody could see me. After a particularly bad skin day, I found myself looking online for someone who could help. It was quite late on a Sunday evening, and I emailed Vale Laser Clinic hoping they would know what to do - within half an hour Emma had emailed me back with an appointment booked for later that week!
What treatments do you have there? Over my time at the clinic I have had a number of different treatments including peels and micro-needling. The team at VLC have always been so accommodating and friendly, taking each treatment step by step and explaining everything along the way including aftercare. I have also had other treatments including eye lash lifts and my nails done. Who carries out the treatments? I have had the pleasure of having Emma, Charlie and Carly work on my skin - each of them feel like a friend and always make me feel so comfortable when I’m in clinic. You can also guarantee that if you have any questions post-treatment, that someone will be there to answer it anytime of day 48
How do you find the experience? Life changing! From my very first appointment, Emma made me feel better and that I was in the right place. She took her time to explain how the skin works and exactly what we were going to do and why. I knew I could trust her from that very first appointment to fix my skin.
What difference have the treatments made to you? I sometimes wonder what I would have done if I hadn’t found VLC. The treatments I have received have genuinely changed my life. When my skin was at my worse, I was left with no confidence and extreme OCD. My first thought when I woke up would be about how my skin looked that day, spending hours looking in the mirror, taking pictures before I ate so I could compare them to afterwards to see if more acne popped up. Acne is truly all-consuming for those who suffer with it, and it can be incredibly debilitating. There are barely any pictures of me from 2020 because I couldn’t bear to see my skin as it was. Emma and her team have given me my confidence back and given me back control of my skin.
Do you think its value for money and money well spent? 1000%! You can’t put a price on confidence, and not once have I felt that the treatment or products provided have been overpriced. The treatments are always thorough, amazing aftercare and the products last ages if you use them correctly. Would you recommend Vale Laser Clinic to others? I recommend them to everyone I can! What do you think makes Vale Laser Clinic special? The staff - Emma, Carly and Charlie have been and still are amazing. They always have time for you and their knowledge and passion for what they do is incredible. I would travel any distance to see the team! 49

If you like to shop in style, then you’ll love Cowbridge High Street. It’s easy to navigate as it’s basically one long road with little off-shoots which open up to more hidden gems. Yes, it has its fair share of charity shops and supermarkets (it has a Waitrose though!) but it’s the plethora of quality independent shops, cafes, boutiques, jewellers, art galleries and gift shops that make it that something special. Eating out in Cowbridge is always a treat too, whether you’re looking for a lunchtime bite or a two or three-course evening meal. It really does have everything!
Cowbridge has a wealth of history dating back to Roman times, with a Roman Road running to the west right through the town. Cowbridge’s historic past is reflected in its present-day buildings, which add to the interest and character of the town. One of our favourite places is Cowbridge Physic Garden, which again is found just off the high street.
If you’re planning a day out for yourself, with family or friends, then a trip to Cowbridge is a must this spring and summer!
COWBRIDGE GEMS BEAUTIFUL INDIE BOUTIQUE
Gibson & Bond We’re huge fans of Gibson & Bond in Cowbridge. Owner, Richard, has a keen eye for style and is always on-trend. Depending on the season, this cool, independent shop offers a roughly 50/50 split between male and female and is predominantly casual contemporary clothing.
For ladies, you’ll find a good range of styles that are generally harder to find on the high street. Notable brands are Bellrose and Part Two. Richard also displays a good selection of complementary jewellery.
For the gents, Matinique is a popular brand, and you’ll find great quality socks, ties and an excellent range of gents’ shirts. Gibson & Bond is one of the few clothing shops in the Vale of Glamorgan that delivers on range, quality and customer service. Richard selects everything that’s on sale personally and takes great pride in offering customers the very best quality at an excellent price. What you love… You tell us you really love Richard’s personal service and friendly approach. You also love the great selection of linen.

Uteglede [ u: / te / glei / de ] Norwegian, Noun A state of mind, the feeling of utter joy and contentment in nature.
These experiences, this feeling uteglede - are deeply important to us at Skogstad. It’s the reason why we do what we do! And our aim is to enable these experiences, and our promise is to make the clothing for tomorrow’s adventures and beyond.
A new word for an old concept, uteglede translated literally means “outdoor fun”, and in norwegian it’s a portmanteau of those words. But it is more than this, it is the state of being totally, and utterly, content in nature. Whether walking, skiing, running or playing, uteglede defines the feeling of joy, and the sense of adventure, that you can only have in nature. In lands like Norway and Wales, we are lucky to have truly stunning surroundings and it’s not difficult to be awestruck by them but uteglede is not just simply an appreciation of the landscape, it’s the fun of outdoor activity, the joy of play. No matter what your age we can all remember at least one time we felt something special outdoors, a warmth and contentment that you just can’t get through any other experience. Whether your adventure is hiking up a mountain, climbing trees and jumping in puddles, enjoying an awe-inspiring sunset, or the accomplishment at reaching the summit that feeling is uteglede.

You may recall we featured the sterling work of the volunteers who look after the Cowbridge Physic Garden in our summer issue last year. This beautiful garden is kept in tip-top condition all year ‘round thanks to the ladies’ hard work. If you are in Cowbridge, it’s one of the places you should definitely visit. It’s as beautiful in spring as it is the rest of the year. Just down the road, just off Cowbridge’s High Street, nestled right next to the beautiful church is the Vale of Glamorgan’s icon to recycling and sustainability - Happy Days Vintage Homestore - a must visit.
An artisan market comprising over thirty individuals. It is one of the biggest and best stores in Cowbridge and simply oozes vintage and retro charm. Not only is it a must visit if you love all things vintage but it’s packed with cool collectables. It lives and breathes sustainability.

BEVAN BUCKLAND LLP OPEN FOR BUSINESS IN COWBRIDGE Wales’ largest independent accountancy firm, Bevan Buckland LLP, continues its expansion with a new office in the centre of Cowbridge. Porthcawl is one of our favourite place to visit in spring and this Fair-Trade town comes alive when the sun is shining. Its numerous cafes, bustling high street and expansive esplanade make it a real magnet for tourists. Combine this with Coney Beach, the beautiful Sandy Bay Beach, some of the best chippies in South Wales, a few decent golf courses and a bustling high street (not forgetting New Road) plus the Pavilion, and some pretty smart eateries and yes, life is pretty good in Porthcawl.
And in the winter its storms are legendary. So, all year round Porthcawl has something to offer residents and tourists alike. As Elvis once said: “You only pass through this life once, you don’t come back for an encore.” Debateable, but people sure keep returning to Porthcawl. Uhuh! Thank-you-very-much.
PORTHCAWL After endless months of lockdown tracksuit wearing, it’s now time to embrace the joy of dressing up again and thanks to Divine, Porthcawl, they’ve made it so easy with their spring range of clothes and accessories.
DIVINE Just take a look at these stunning items from one of their favourite brands, Powder. Don’t they just want to put a smile on your face and a spring in your step? The collections are fabulously wearable, evoking both glamour and fun. Powder’s beautiful bespoke packaging makes their products perfect for either gifting or simply treating yourself. The boutique is like a treasure trove of lovely goodies to suit every shape, age and budget. Give yourself permission. You deserve it after all this time!

When you have short hair, there aren’t that many styles you can achieve. Tracey Dyer wanted to ring the changes with her look and a wig seemed like the perfect solution.
ONLY GOOD H AIR DAYS
We chatted to Tracey about how she managed to achieve different looks after a visit to The Wig Shop, Porthcawl. How did you hear about The Wig Shop? I drove past it on a visit to Porthcawl, the shop front caught my attention. I just loved the different wigs, styles and colours that were available, or pieces, as I call them. Did you need to book? No appointment was necessary. I could walk in and have my consultation there and then. Michila also offered an appointment system if I was coming from out of town. How did you find working with Michila? I found being in Michila’s hands was very relaxing. She is a good listener and made the process comfortable for me. She asked about my lifestyle and needs. She was very warm, approachable and welcoming. She was very patient and has a great sense of humour. I wanted to explore my options. I felt at ease and in good hands as Michila has many years of experience in this field - she knew exactly what suited me but allowed me to explore different looks and colours. Michila was full of support and suggestions. She explained how to work the wig into different styles and also about the after care of the piece. Michila was all about me making the right choice, I felt no pressure or hard sell, I was made to feel comfortable and happy with my choice.
Did you have any reservations? I did wonder if I would have enough courage to wear a wig as I was doing it for fashion, but I needn’t have worried.
“I’m having so much fun with wigs. It’s like reinventing yourself.” Did you find what you were looking for? Yes, I tried on a lot of wigs before I finally made my choice. I could have come home with more than one! The wig I finally came home with was a cheeky little bob, and I loved it - so did all my friends. I felt full of fun and more youthful, just like I had left the salon with a great hair style and salon finish. Was it affordable? Yes, there is a price point to suit all. The value came in many ways. No more expensive visits to the salon only to end up with not quite the right look. It also saves on time, and you can change your look to suit yourself at any time. I’m having so much fun with wigs. It’s like reinventing yourself. Would you recommend The Wig Shop to friends, colleagues, and family? Yes, yes and yes! If the reason is for fashion (like me), medical or confidence and if you’re female or male, then pop in and see Michila. Yes, we love the Vale. We count ourselves extremely lucky to live in Wales’ southern-most county. It’s a truly beautiful combination of stunning, rugged coastline and gorgeous, rolling countryside.
TRAVEL LIFE
As a regular reader, you’ll know that occasionally the wanderlust gets the better of us and we’re away at the drop of a hat. Over the last few years, travel abroad has been problematic at best, for reasons we’re all too aware. We decided that we were going to stay put for this year and venture abroad again in 2023 - we already have a trip to Spain lined up along with a city break to the wonderful, wonderful Copenhagen. Our focus on the UK has been no bad thing. We’ve started exploring the Vale more (we walked thousands of miles in lockdown), Wales and the rest of the UK. We’re hoping visit Staffordshire in the next few months and the east coast of England. Cornwall and Devon beckon too so we’ll certainly be featuring some of those trips in Vale Life. We’ve also heard great things about Scotland so we hope to head to the land of the lochs later in the year. Trust a local agent… One thing we’ve learned on our travels is it’s safer to book with a local agent than online. There’s more protection and their knowledge is incredible. We have two excellent indie agents here in the Vale and both are in Cowbridge. Sam Smith Travel and Cowbridge travel. They always have great offers on so it’s well worth popping in for a chat if you’re passing. We’ve found them incredibly helpful. Travel Life online… Early in 2020, we established our Travel Life website: www.travellifemag. co.uk and it’s becoming quite popular with the online community. We post reasonably regularly and now travel is starting to get going again, we’ll be updating it more often. There are also whispers of a fully-fledged digital publication – we’ll see.

We try to get to London at least once a year (to get a Heat magazine obviously) and we’re always looking for new locations, funky hotels and cool places to visit. The Gate near Whitechapel popped up on our radar so we logged on to www.thetrainline.com
THE GATE
GATEWAY TO THE CITY
The Gate is an aparthotel, a cool cross between an apartment and a hotel. We’ve stayed on a few previously and they work very well. The Gate is on White Church Lane near Whitechapel. It’s just down the road from the Gherkin so never having stayed in that area, we thought we’d give it a shot. It worked out very well indeed. Armed with our Oyster card, from Aldgate, Aldgate East or Whitechapel tube stations we could explore most of central London within twenty minutes. Locally there are some excellent restaurants, pubs with live music and eateries. We had intended on seeing a movie at the Curzon cinema and bar around the corner but just ended up in the bar area chatting - next time perhaps, we were just too chilled.
The Gate is within a short walking distance of London’s most creative and vibrant areas of Shoreditch, Hoxton and Hackney, all alive with street art, independent restaurants and great bars. The iconic Tower Bridge and the riverfront are also a mere ten-minute walk away. Honestly, you won’t be bored.
Our ‘studio’ at The Gate was compact and bijou, as you’d expect, and was fine for our purposes. Tastefully designed, and being on the seventeenth floor, we had some great views across London. There are larger rooms available, and The Gate has an excellent website where all is explained. We particularly loved the king size Hypnos bed, the shower and excellent toiletries, and the lounge area on the fifth floor (which is also where breakfast is served). You can order a meal too, but we grabbed a couple of steaks from the rather excellent Macro Food Centre across the street and cooked them in the room on our first evening. On our second evening, liking Turkish food (we love Keyif in Penarth), we thought we’d try Efes just five minutes away (we’d passed it earlier in the day). We were lucky to get a table and weren’t disappointed. The tender lamb shish was perfect, as was the service. We can certainly recommend.
Whenever we visit any area in London, we ask ourselves two questions. Would we return and would we stay in the same hotel (or aparthotel)? The answer to both questions is a resounding yes. The area had a real buzz about it and The Gate mirrors that energy and creativity (and it’s pretty reasonably priced). The staff are excellent and couldn’t be more helpful. I wish we could have stayed for a few more nights. Two was great but there’s such a lot to see and do around there, three or four nights would have been perfect.

Penarth was recently featured as one of the most desirable places to live in Wales. No surprise to us! With an abundance of shops, the Pavilion, pier, esplanade, parks and eateries, this charming throwback to the Victorian era has seen house prices soar in the beginning of 2022.
PENARTH
“Penarth has a great mix of shops and businesses.”
What are the fundamentals of estate planning? Without one, there is no guarantee your money or valuables will be passed on to your family in the way that you wish.
ROMILLY FINANCIAL
IT ALWAYS PAYS TO PLAN AHEAD It’s crucially important to have an estate plan. If you want to save your loved ones from having an unnecessary tax bill it is essential to plan ahead. There are many ways to reduce or prevent an inheritance tax bill altogether. Start planning early Planning what happens to your money and possessions when you die aims to: n make sure your money goes to the people whom you want to leave it to. n reduce or even eliminate inheritance tax (IHT to leave more to those you love. n ensure that your wishes are carried out without unnecessary expense or delay.
Inheritance Tax – a snapshot Some important figures to keep in mind: n £323,000 is your tax-free allowance n £175,000 is your tax-free property allowance n 40% tax applies above the tax-free allowances n £197,000 was the average Inheritance Tax bill in 2017/18 Marcus Rees says: “Romilly Financial can help you create an efficient IHT plan based on your individual circumstances. Call now to speak to our Senior Financial Planners or to request a free IHT guide.”
David Stealey says: “Our financial planners can work with you to establish your potential IHT liability and how much wealth could be left to pass onto your family. Many people think it is deeply unfair that the Estate that they have worked so hard to build up can potentially be subject to a 40% tax charge. Fortunately, there are lots of exemptions that can help mitigate the tax paid. Regrettably, many families fail to not take full advantage of what is on offer.”

Julian Trott is based in Penarth and is one of the most talented florists working in Wales today. With the post-Covid world playing wedding catch-up, he’s busier than ever. We visit him at his beautiful shop in Cornerswell Road.
FLORIST64
Julian has been in the business for over thirty years so it’s no surprise he’s learned a thing or two along the way. “I’ve built a long-standing, loyal clientele. I think they love what I do, they keep coming back,” he enthuses. Florist64 is like a department store for flowers where people can choose their blooms or, alternatively, they can leave the flower choice to Julian and he designs and creates something for them. He really doesn’t don’t mind either way. His customers come from right across Cardiff, the Vale and South and West Wales. I ask him what people love about his floristry. “They tell me it’s my creativity and good customer service. I offer the products and services most florists do,” he says. “With funerals, I see people when they’re sad, and with weddings I see them at their happiest. The universe balances everything out.”
Julian is much in demand so if you are getting married you really should get in touch. “It’s really lovely at the moment,” he says. “It feels like everyone is getting married. It’s been such an awful time, it’s lovely to see people smiling again.” TESTIMONIALS
What customers say… Beautiful arrangements, they really take my breath away. He’s so talented. Julian’s just a really sweet guy to deal with. Nothing is ever too much trouble. Florist64 2h Cornerswell Road Penarth CF64 2UZ 029 2070 1275 hello@florist64.com www.Florist64.com

Davies Motor Company is widely recognised as the premier body repair shop in south Wales. After seeing some of the Italian exotica on the company’s social media, we caught up with managing Director, Sean Davies, to find out more.
ITALIAN JOBS When was Davies Motor Company established? 1974. We are a long established, family-run business with over fortyfive years experience based just off Hadfield Road. Those of you who know Cardiff will know Hadfield Road as home to the majority of Cardiff’s car dealerships. You could say we’re perfectly positioned. You have an enviable reputation for high quality work, please tell us about that… Davies Motor Company have built an outstanding reputation within the body shop and repair industry. We have gained approval from manufacturers such as Aston Martin, Bentley, Nissan and Nissan GTR. Due to our consistently high professional standard, and unique quality of workmanship, we are proud to be the only company to achieve this status. We must confess we have been drooling over your Facebook page recently. Some beautiful Italian cars… Yes, we love the Italians but we also repair all types of vehicles, not just cars – vans, motorhomes, motorcycles, it’s surprising what turns up. Lamborghini, Ferrari, Maserati and Fiat - all years,
you’d be amazed. But we do our fair share of other brands too. Aston Martin, Porsche, McLaren, Bentley, Rolls Royce, Mercedes, BMW, you name it, we’ve probably repaired and painted it. What services do you offer? Accident repairs - lots of those. Full resprays and restoration. What types of customer do you attract? Our customer base are insurance companies, local authorities, manufacturers and dealerships. Private customers are very welcome - we see a lot of high-end vehicles and plenty of classics, but don’t think that you can’t bring any brand or model here. They all look sorry for themselves when they arrive. Whatever the car or model, it’s our job to make them look as good as new. Do you provide free quotations? Yes, we do, but you always need to make an appointment. We’re constantly quoting so it gets pretty busy. What do you do to relax? I love being with my family, that’s when I’m happiest. And I do love golf. If I’m not at home or in work, I’m almost certainly playing golf. 70

Arthur, official Labrador at Vale Solicitors, and his friends don’t want to worry you, but you may have reached that “certain age” when you should put your affairs in order and make or review your wills and powers of attorney.
THE LAB REPORT
TAKING THE WORRY OUT OF WILLS
At Vale Solicitors we have refined our systems so that in most cases we can prepare your wills and have them ready for signature at one meeting. This saves time for you and us and this is reflected in reasonably priced fixed fees - whether for a single will or a full family package of joint wills and powers of attorney. We can see you at our offices in Llantwit Major or Barry or in your own home anywhere in Cardiff or the Vale. Our clients often say that they have been “putting off “doing their wills and powers of attorneys as they are “such a worry “. We take the worry away and provide a highly professional service with good humour and understanding. All our wills and documents are bespoke to each client so that they reflect your wishes clearly in plain English.
If you want something more complicated, try the Marx Brothers: Chico Marx: What does this say here, this thing here? Groucho Marx: Oh that? Oh, that's the usual clause, that's in every contract. That just says, it says, 'If any of the parties participating in this contract are shown not to be in their right mind, the entire agreement is automatically nullified.' Chico Marx: Well, I don't know. Groucho Marx: It's all right, that's in every contract. That's what they call a sanity clause. Chico Marx: You can't fool me, there ain't no sanity clause. We can also advise on estate planning and preservation of family assets. If complex tax issues arise, we have further expertise on hand in the shape of Isobel Morgan, daughter of our senior partner Michael Morgan. 72

Sunglasses are essential to protect our eyes from bright light, but only lenses that are polarised can cut out glare from reflective surfaces. Catherine Coles. Manager at Davies & Jones, Talbot Green explains.
SUN SCREEN POLARISED SUNGLASSES AT
DAVIES AND JONES We all experience glare in our daily lives, and whether its whilst driving or taking part in an outdoors sport, it can be distracting. When light reflects off a flat surface, like water, it tends to travel in a uniform direction creating a concentration of light, or ‘glare’. Polarised lenses contain a filter that blocks these concentrated light rays
and reduces glare. This reduction of glare can be particularly useful when driving in the rain, or when the sun is low in the sky, as blinding glare can be extremely dangerous.
“Whether you’re a driver or just someone who spends a lot of time outdoors, Davies and Jones recommends polarised sunglasses.” Reduced glare means better contrast and clarity of vision. This enhanced vision, and the fact that harmful rays are being blocked also results in less eye strain. Polarised lenses have been popular in the fishing community for years but it’s not just those who spend a lot of time around water that can benefit from reduced glare. Whether you’re a driver or just someone who spends a lot of time outdoors, Davies and Jones recommends polarised sunglasses. 74
Davies and Jones are proud of their exceptionally stylish range from Maui Jim whose sunglasses won’t change the world – they’ll change the way you see it.

Now that the dreaded “C” word is diminishing and we can all go out out again, Nicola Venetia Steele is wowing us with her charity fashion shows. This stylish, glamorous lady sure knows how to put on an event and this one was surely her best yet.
IT’S SHOWTIME!
Held at the Court Colman Manor, guests were greeted on arrival with a glass of fizz, enjoyed a scrumptious afternoon tea and were treated to a fabulous show with Nicola’s models turning many a head with the gorgeous clothes, from casual day wear, holiday wear and something a bit more glamorous for cruising or special events. The fun didn’t stop after the fashion show as guests were up on the dancefloor for music and entertainment from Sochia Eckersley. There was a raffle with a table full of fantastic prizes and, best of all, all of the monies raised from tickets and the raffle, which amounted to £3,706, went to two of Nicola’s favourite charities, The Dogs Trust, Bridgend and Hope Rescue (each receiving £1,853).
If you’ve ever been to one of Nicola’s fashion shows, then you know you’re always in for a real treat. “Tickets were gone in a flash,” said Nicola. “As soon as the flier was posted on my Facebook page, my phone went into overdrive. I really could have filled another venue from the brilliant response.”
I’d also like to thank all of the businesses who donated such amazing prizes for the raffle which helped raise so much money for The Dogs Trust and Hope Rescue. You have all made a difference to a little dog somewhere that thought humans were cruel - your generosity has saved a dog’s life.”
“The models, who were all shapes and sizes and from different age groups, looked so professional and, what’s more, you could see that they were really enjoying themselves. Perhaps a little glass of fizz, for medicinal purposes of course, helped in that area! “My ladies did me proud,” said Nicola proudly. “I can always rely on them to put on a good show. They all looked so amazing and made my job so much easier. I can’t thank them enough.”
Nicola also wanted to thank all of the guests who dug deep at this difficult time and bought tickets for the event and for the raffle.
“I’d also like to thank my singer Soschia. She really got the party started and, of course, thanks to owners of Court Colman, Sanjeev and Elinor, for hosting us and for the amazing afternoon teas. It all looked too good to eat! Court Colman is such an amazing venue and I’d recommend it to anyone for events, or for a wedding.
“I’m already working on my next event and plan to have a range of different events throughout the year, so please everyone keep an eye on my Facebook page for more information and book those tickets they really do go like hot cakes, and I wouldn’t want anyone to miss out,” said Nicola.
“I think we’ve all missed getting glammed up and having somewhere fabulous to go.” 77
The next fashion show will be in October so check out Nicola’s social pages for more info.
NICOLA VENETIA STEELE Nicola’s popularity has gone from strength to strength. I know this is a phrase bandied about too frequently but in Nic’s case, it couldn’t be further from the truth. She has always had a passion for clothes, having worked in the industry for many years but, since opening her Garden Boutique at her home, and with the help of her social media followers, her fabulous videos (and with a bit of help from Vale Life!), word of this glamorous woman and her boutique are spreading far and wide. Anyone who knows me, knows that I love a bit of fashion. Yes, we can all buy online, and I sometimes do if I know the brand that suits me, but there’s nothing better, in my humble opinion, than that personal touch. Actually, going into a boutique, touching the fabrics for quality control, and then trying them on to see how they look. I really dislike the faff of having to send things back - first the disappointment when they don’t suit, the packing them back up and then having to take them to the Post Office - what a drag! What could be better than physically going into a boutique, speaking with the owner, and asking for advice, trying things on, and then walking away with bags full of lovely new clothes. Yes, that’s right, nothing beats it in my mind!” Walking into Nicola’s Garden Boutique for me is like walking into paradise. I know I’m going to find a few gems. Not always the kind of things you can find on the high street. Nic has a fantastic eye for knowing what’s going to look good. She particularly knows 79
what suits body shapes, especially things that will suit a real woman. You know, those of us with boobs and bums. She won’t tell you something looks good if it doesn’t. She knows that if she did and you took it home and it didn’t suit, you wouldn’t go back. That’s not good business. I’m very interested to see what Nicola does next. She’s not one to rest on her laurels. I know she’s got plans. I can see her brain ticking. All I can say is make the trip, appointments aren’t always necessary, bag yourself some gorgeous clothes and play dress up like there’s no tomorrow. After having to stay in for so long, it’s time we stepped out, dressed up and strutted our stuff!

Stress. It’s a familiar word, and something we reference on a day-today basis, ranging from workplace stress to the pressures we feel when we feel we aren’t meeting our home life expectations. Penarth health professional Angharad Evans believes she can help.
STRESS M ANAGEMENT significant impact on how we can deal with stress. Learning to breath properly will help stress management greatly.
The signs of stress are quite broad, and extend beyond the immediate feelings of pressure and can include insomnia, depression, fatigue, headaches, upset stomach, irritability, and IBS. Stress can be defined in many ways - toxin, physical trauma, heat, cold, strong emotional response. All of these can trigger a stress response and how we handle these stresses has a huge influence on our overall health. As humans, our typical response to stress is known as the ‘fight or flight’ response, however, continued exposure to stressors puts a significant amount of pressure on our body and can have a destructive effect on our health in the long term. Many of us adopt distinct coping strategies to cope with stress which can include overeating, overspending, too much television, emotional outbursts, smoking, alcohol… and whilst they provide immediate relief, there are healthier approaches that we can and should adopt when dealing with stress. Diet What we put into our body really impacts how we feel and how we can cope with daily stressors, so adopt these easy changes to your diet, and put your body in the best position to deal with stressors: n Eliminate/ minimise caffeine intake - for example, consider choosing caffeine free alternatives for your daily coffee n Eliminate/ minimise alcohol intake - remember, alcohol is a depressant, and in so many occasions, can make you feel worse, consider alcohol free alternatives, which also enables you to bypass the inevitable hangover!
n Eliminate refined carbohydrate intake (bread, biscuits, cakes etc) avoid the sugar high, and consider alternatives e.g., brown rice n Increase your vegetable intake, ensure your meals are colourful - hit that 5-a-day, through a variety of fruits and vegetables n Identify and avoid any allergens - these can exacerbate your stress response, by working with me, we can identify your allergens and come up with healthier alternatives. Adrenal support Our adrenal glands produce hormones that help regulate our metabolism, immune system, blood pressure, response to stress and other essential functions, so make sure you are providing them with the right materials that will help them to function effectively: n Potassium/sodium balance, vitamin c, B6, zinc, magnesium and B5 are the nutrients which help adrenal function n Ashwagandha, Rhodiola, Siberian Ginseng are herbs which can help the adrenals.
Exercise The body adapts to regular exercise and then exercise becomes a stress relief. Exercise can have a positive effect on symptoms such as tension, depression, inadequacy, and worry. It can help improve mood and our ability to handle stress. Whether you’re walking, doing yoga, pilates a gym session or a dip in the sea - it all will help. And don’t think you need to begin with a massive gym workout, start small, and build up, avoid putting unnecessary additional stress upon yourself! Breathing This is a basic function; however, it has 82
Basic Instructions: 1. Sit comfortably in a quiet place where you will not be disturbed. 2. Place your feet slightly apart 3. Place one hand on your abdomen and place one hand on your chest 4. Count to four as you inhale through your nose, pause a second, then 5. Count to four as you exhale through your mouth 6. Repeat until you feel calmer As you concentrate on your breathing… n which hand is rising and falling as you inhale and exhale? n ensure your shoulders and chest are not moving n As you breath in, imagine the warmed air flowing into all parts of your body n As the air flows out, imagine the tension and stress leaving your body. Want more tailored treatment that will enable you to deal with stress effectively? Contact Angharad today for a range of pragmatic support.
