There really is a lot to love, and celebrate, about this beautiful county we’re privileged to live in.
From traditional washing/drying, professional styling to Emmi Pet dental teeth cleaning, nail trimming, ear cleaning and plucking plus a variety of products to purchase, Posh Pawz has everything your dog needs!
It’s our fifteen-year anniversary this issue. You might think that’s worthy of a fanfare but we’re not that way. We tend to look forward rather than back, and, anyway, Vale Life is a celebration of the Vale not us; the countryside, the coastline, the wildlife, the towns, the villages, the businesses and you, our readers.
Every day we meet the most amazing people on our travels, and they truly inspire us. If you do have some spare cash this summer, spend it in an indie business. Hospitality (pubs, cafés and restaurants) are having a torrid timestaff are hard to come by so be kind, and if someone does come up short, have a quiet word – don’t just take to the keyboard. We all have tough days. The Vale is a fabulous place to be, especially when the sun is shining –whether your shopping on the high street, lazing on the beach or out walking, we hope you have your best summer ever. 6
“Kath has looked after both our Jack Russells and we can certainly endorse her services. Lucy loved her, and now little Roxy is being pampered too!”
It’s a tough time for many right now, but don’t believe the doomsayers, it isn’t that bad in the bigger scheme of things - there’s much to be positive about.
All breeds are catered for, large or small, in a safe, clean environment with the added benefit of air conditioning during these hot summer months. Kath adds, “We will continue to develop and who knows what the future will bring. With the increase in puppies over the pandemic, we also offer acclimatisation visits for them to get used to the sights and sounds of a working salon in order for them to feel confident on their first grooming experience.”

Harry’s Wood Flooring Melissa and James are delighted to introduce their brand-new showroom on the popular Park Crescent in Barry. Harry’s Wood Flooring is named after their beloved dog Harry, who will be a resident at the shop. As you will see, the name and logo are quite distinct, so should be remembered easily! Park Crescent is a busy street, not your typical high street, and attracts attention from passers-by, so they thought it would be perfect for their business.
Harry’s Wood Flooring offers customers a bespoke range of high-end luxury wood flooring and a variety of SPC waterproof flooring, exclusive to south Wales, at affordable prices. They offer colours and finishes which are exclusive to them and the quality of their products speak for themselves. They have created the business around their family, and really support local, family run businesses in the Vale and wanted to offer luxury flooring to those in their community.
Customers and new stylists soon get used to each other and that’s certainly been the case for Katie who joined owner Vanessa at her busy salon in Rhoose last May. We chatted to Vanessa to see how Katie has settled in.
8
How did Katie hear about the job? She’s a local girl and lives in the village. On her way to taking her daughter to school, her daughter used to stop by to see Ernest, the salon dog. Katie used to say to her, “one day mummy’s going to work there”, and now she does!
What training has Katie had in the industry? She did her training at seventeen (had her daughter quite young), then took a break. Fast forward, she went back to college to have a refresher as she felt the industry had evolved with new She’streatments.gladshedid as she feels that she’s even better than she was years ago.

SUMMER’S SUBLIME
MORE THAN FISH & CHIPS!
The name on the door suggests great seafood, but meat eaters and vegetarians are also well catered for. Sunday lunch is also recommended with a choice of roasts, fish or panfried free-range chicken in lemon and rosemary, plus steaks or Mrs Villa’s famous steak pie. The plates of food are generous and, if you do have room for pudding, then you must try Mrs Villa’s infamous options including Hazelnut Pavlova, Caramelised Oranges or the exquisite rice pudding! Light snacks or light meal options are also available. There is a delightful courtyard eating area at the rear of the restaurant or, if you like watching the world (or Barry!) go by, then there’s seating outside overlooking The Knap Gardens, perfect for a slice of cake and a coffee!
How have clients responded? They’ve really taken to her. It helps that she lives in the village so knows a lot of people already but is meeting so many more.
Katie also studied beauty, any chance that beauty treatments could be introduced to Sublime?
Why did you need a new stylist? To be honest, I’m knackered! I needed an extra pair of scissors. What would you say Katie’s strengths are? Well I’m an all rounder but I suppose my real passion is colouring. Katie enjoys cutting and she is proving popular already with clients.
We will see how things go. It’s not out of the question. We could be offering waxing, tinting, gel nails, manicures and pedicures soon. Watch this space! Summer Special! Sublime are offering 10% off cuts and 15% off colours until the end of September. Please mention Vale Life when you book.

NETWORKING Bridgend Business Network Bridgend Business Network (BBN) is a monthly meeting for business owners and professionals in and around Bridgend. BBN meet at Huna Café Bar in town on the last Thursday of the month 4 - 6pm. Jamie Flook set it up as he started working in Bridgend last year and was looking for a networking group to join, but there wasn’t one and decided to set one up. “I thought about the type of group I would like to join, and went from there,” said Jamie. He previously attended networking events where it is quite formal, with presentations and the like, and whilst he thinks there is a place for those, he wanted to create something less structured and formal. The ethos of the BBN meets is to come for a drink and relaxed chat and drop in and out as and when you feel like it. “Sadly, we didn’t get any pictures from our first meet in May but will do going forward, and upload them to our social media pages!” Want to know more? “Skin is our thing,” says owner and Lead Skin Therapist, Emma, when asked about her services. Emma and her team believe it is possible for everyone to improve their skin health and appearance. Whether you want to get rid of unwanted hair or tattoos, or you are seeking a more youthful, radiant complexion.
L ASER CLINIC EFFECTIVE TREATMENTS CAN HELP 10
There’s a reason it’s called beauty sleep. Getting enough sleep makes everything better. We make better food choices, move more, have better digestion, less stress, and have more productive, clearer thought processes. These all link to our skin health, support it to be healthy and glowing. While you’re sleeping, your skin is recharging, repairing damage and re-energising for the next day.
3. A radiant dawn begins at dusk… Evening skincare doesn’t have to wait until bedtime. Mind blowing but it’s true. Do it when you are home for the evening, putting the kids to bed or getting into your comfies. There’s a smugness to settling down with a book or box set knowing your skin is clean and the active serums are working on making your skin healthy earlier than bedtime.
Emma says: “Trust your skin to Vale Laser Clinic. It’s an investment for the rest of your life.” Give them a call today. Your skin will thank you for it! 5. Keep it simple, but effective… The foundation of your skincare routine is simplicity. Your skincare needs to work for you, we want you to be consistent with your routine to really reap the benefits of healthy skin. This can be as little as three products or as many as you like. My morning routine takes two minutes, I’ve put it on our Instagram page for you to see.
Vale Laser Clinic offers treatments to deal with rosacea, acne, pigmentation, red veins, lines, wrinkles and more. Emma’s dedicated skin therapists are results driven and will proactively treat your skin concerns to return your skin to its natural health in the shortest time possible. You will see realistic, tangible results and you will be confident and proud of your skin. Here, Emma shares her top five skincare tips… 1. SPF. Always SPF… Not just on sunny days and don’t rely on the SPF in your make up, it’s just not enough. Sun damage is responsible for 80% of premature aging and exacerbates all skin concerns such as pigmentation, acne / rosacea. Find a face specific one that fits in with your lifestyle, under make up, tinted coverage, etc. Then apply Every. Single. Day. As UVB light is present 365 days a year, penetrates cloud and glass and ages your skin, you need daily protection, reapplied more often on sunny days. 2. Face cloths, ewww… Face cloths are like your underwear –used once and washed. When left damp after use, they are a breeding ground for bacteria. Buy a bundle, you can put them in with any load of washing and always have clean ones available.
4. Sleep like Cinderella…
Bec Bland, TransformationalaccreditedLife Coach and Positive Psychology Practitioner, explains the benefits of walking and talking, and why her coaching practice has grown from strength to strength since offering coaching walks on the beautiful Vale Coastal Path. The benefits of walking outdoors for our physical and mental wellbeing have been well publicised over recent years. Walking releases feel-good hormones that improve mood and studies have shown how walking helps to reduce stress and anxiety, increase energy, and help you sleep better. And what better place to walk than along the beautiful Vale Coastal Path that enjoys breath-taking scenery, dramatic coastlines and thriving nature reserves? So when Bec Bland, a keen outdoor enthusiast, set up her Coaching Practice in the Vale of Glamorgan, offering Coaching walks for clients felt like the obvious choice. “Like most professions, even after lockdown restrictions lifted, Coaching calls tended to stay on Zoom. I love being outdoors and with the beautiful scenery we’re lucky enough to have here in the Vale, I was keen to offer face to face Coaching walks for my clients.” “My clients want Coaching to help them achieve positive life changes, achieve success and step into their true greatness and potential without compromising on physical and emotional wellness. So, the opportunity to walk and be coached has proven extremely popular.”
We’re big fans of walking and its benefits. Combine this with talking and beautiful scenery and you have a recipe for good health.
Transformational Coaching helps people create deep and lasting change in their lives. It’s positive and future focused and requires the client to think deeply about different aspects of their lives and beliefs. Mandy is one of Bec’s clients who’s been experiencing the benefits of walking and talking. She says, “I wanted Coaching to increase my confidence in my personal life and also to embrace public speaking, which is part of my job.”
BEC BLAND Walking the talk...
Whether you’re walking and talking or just enjoying the scenery, the Vale Coastal path is a truly wonderful place to be.
“After each session with Bec, I’m learning something new, and my negative mindset is disappearing. I know myself more than I ever have before.”
“I’m feeling so powerful and in control now and that’s all down to Bec’s coaching. I’ve delivered a number of training sessions in my work through gaining more confidence through coaching.”
Bec Bland is an TransformationalaccreditedLifeCoach and Positive Psychology Practitioner with a thriving Coaching Practice in the Vale of Glamorgan, South Wales. She is founder of Bec Bland Coaching Ltd and her Inspiring Greatness Coaching Programmes help businesses, professionals and individuals achieve success with wellness, authenticity and confidence.
“We usually walk near the beach, it makes you feel relaxed and feels quite liberating. I find the walk and talk sessions much more beneficial than the ‘zoom’ coached sessions. There’s something about being outdoors that lifts your mood in general and gets all your senses working together.”

ORAGE F ARM S HOP & K ITCHEN
It has been a little over two years since the opening of Forage Farm Shop & Kitchen, located on the Penllyn Estate just outside Cowbridge. And what a couple of years it’s been!

“We are always brainstorming ways to make use of our resources,” says Matt.
As part of a large farm, the management have embraced opportunities that come with having access to beautiful outdoor space.
From the early lockdowns of 2020 to ‘Welsh Farm Shop of the Year 2022’ at the Farm Shop & Deli Show, it has been a whirlwind beginning for this fledgling retail and hospitality business. Visiting Forage last week to chat with Matt Homfray, part of the local family that owns Forage and the adjoining farm, we found a full car park, a bustling shop, and barely a free table in the restaurant. After a few minutes onsite, it’s not hard to see why this unique destination has become so popular. The shop teems with delicious, locally sourced produce, the butchery counter displays Penllyn Estate prime beef, lamb and pork, and the food in the restaurant is sublime. With their new takeaway unit, Forage Away, serving home-made savoury and sweet treats seven days a week, it seems they have every angle covered.

“We’re trying to showcase the best that Wales has to offer in terms of high-quality, sustainable food,” says Matt. “People don’t bang the drum enough for the foodie scene here. Our chef, Matt Eales, is amazing, and trains his team to a top level. Look at our reviews online and you’ll see how much customers love our grub. Amazing coffee too – the guys at Coaltown really know their stuff. As for our meat, it’s about high welfare standards, classically trained butchers, maximising the carcass. Try our new treacle cured bacon, it’ll knock your socks off!”

“In June we held our inaugural music festival, Lamb Jam, which was a great success. On 9th and 10th September, outdoor cinema will return to the lawn (Mamma Mia and Bohemian Rhapsody) – that was so much fun last year. Then in October we have our PYO pumpkin bonanza. It’s going to be epic – maize maze, alpacas, piglets, tractor rides, pumpkin catapults, face painting, great food – we’re taking it to the next level. Check out our website for more details.” So full steam ahead at Forage, and a great addition to the Vale. Now, back to that treacle bacon...

To say that recent years have been a roller coaster for Nicky Bright, would be the understatement of the century. Nicky’s story is the interior design equivalent of Stallone’s Rocky, and boy has this lady come out punching.
How did you get into design and renovation industry?
BRIGHT
But, from those days of extreme emotional lows, was reborn a new, stronger soul, and a happier one. And probably, even Nicky would argue, if it hadn’t have happened, she may well have not rediscovered her passion for interior design. She now lives in the beautiful Vale market town of Cowbridge, but we caught up with Nicky at her new Airbnb pub project in the beautiful Swansea valley.
To discover your husband’s having an affair is devastating for most people. To find out from your children must be almost unimaginable. But that harsh reality was Nicky’s. Most women, and men, would find it hard to come back from such betrayal and Nicky, by her own admission, had to pretty much hit rock bottom before her inner voice told her to get up off the canvas and fight for her, and her children’s future.
Thinking about timescale to 1995, Changing Rooms was on the TV (Lawrence Llewellyn-Bowen etc.), and I absolutely loved it.
SHINING
Going back a little bit further to when I was a child, probably between the age of nine or twelve, I had this fascination with design. 14
Why do you love what you do?
Today for example. I was up at 6.30am, at the pub by 8am and I didn’t leave until after 9 o’clock. I could have kept going and going. I just love what I do. The music is on in the background, and I just don’t stop. It’s lovely when you find your passion. I do push myself too hard sometimes, I realise that. I have to make sure that all the rubbish is away, and the room is finished so that the following day I can start a new task within the project - I am very hard on myself.
What was your first project? I’d painted a school that my children were moving to in Wales. We went into the school in Penyfai in Bridgend. They told me it was a lovely little Church of Wales school in the village, and I went there and was really disappointed. It was really run down and neglected - lots of portacabins. I was sad my children and the children at the school were in this environment when I visited. So, I spoke to the headmistress and she loved my ideas. I started painting the playground for them. Painted flowers on the walls and hopscotch, snakes and ladders and parents loved it and asked me if I could do themed bedrooms for their children. So, I did. I painted murals, furniture (Disney themes, football). 16
I recall going into my parents’ bedroom saying, “mum you go downstairs, and I’m going to surprise you and redesign your bedroom for you.” She still talks about this now, she’d have Estée Lauder makeup and Yves Saint Laurent perfume on the dressing table, and I would redesign it for her and make it all neat and say “surprise!” And mum would say “gosh it looks lovely. Thank you.” I would go shopping for kitchen accessories as a child, Woolworths was my favourite store. With my little basket and pocket money I would select red mugs, utensils, and other items I could match and know mum would like. Once the kitchen was cleaned, I would set about re-styling it and loved doing it. Did that passion continue into your working life? It did. I worked for Chanel on the cosmetic counter and, again, I was just really good at staging and would make the displays look nicer. I also had a job with Boots the chemist (this is going back to when I was very young), one of my first jobs. I’d redesign and stage the cosmetic counter and noticed it made a difference to sales.
So it’s something you’ve always done? It a passion of mine. I took a home study exam for interior design and I flew through it because I was just good at it. When I lived in the Midlands, watching Changing Rooms, I started to makeover friends and neighbours’ houses. I was designing, painting furniture and stencilling. I was noticed by the College in Solihull and asked to take on a course for them in the evenings, one day a week. I would teach ladies how to do paint effects and stencilling. You could have ended up teaching! It came to an end because I moved from the Midlands back to Wales and, at that time, it wasn’t as popular here. Times had changed and wallpaper started to grow in popularity, becoming feature walls, and my life had changed as I started a family and had two little ones to focus on. I left it then for, I would say around fifteen years. Friends used to say to me, “you should go back and do what you always did, you were brilliant at it”, but I didn’t because I had the family. So, my background really is just selftaught, which I think is the best part about it. I’m proud of that. I just always loved my books and magazines and anything to do with interiors.
So, when I told the landlord, who also has the Gower Brewery, what I could do and we started walking round the pub, I had my vision, and I was reeling ideas off immediately. We could put a children’s area in, something for teenagers, mums and dads, and grandma, and he was blown away and said, “I’m not selling.” He said, “I love it, and have always loved it, so I’ll keep hold of it and you can transform it for me.” So here we are! My current project. It’s been really hard work, but I’ve loved every dust-filled minute. It’s going to sleep up to 26 people, and it’s gorgeous. I’m so proud of it.
It can be really tough. I purchased The Old Stables Cottage in Pembroke at the beginning of December and I really haven’t had a day off since then. It’s been back-to-back projects with different properties. I don’t have any time off. Even on the weekends I’m out, sourcing stock, buying materials, ordering, picking items up. They say it’s not work if you love what you do, and I do! I really love doing what I’m doing.
Is it only commercial projects you undertake? The business is still young so I’m taking on private and commercial. Anything that interests me: show homes, pubs, holiday lets, retail shops, lots of things!
What do you do in your spare time?
Same happened when I sold the family home, you can feel positive energy, love and happiness in a home.
What I really like to do (and Covid was good for this), I like to walk on the beach with my headphones on and just listen to podcasts, and anything to do with positivity. Walking on the beach, in the countryside and mountains. That’s how I like to relax when I have time. You took yourself away to the Atlas Mountains recently. That’s certainly getting away from it all... It was booked for 2020 but postponed due to Covid. I chose to do it because it felt the right time after a very difficult period with the divorce and getting back on my feet. I’m doing okay now, and I felt like it was the right time to give back to charity. So, when I heard about the Atlas Mountains and how there was only ninety families in the mountains living in mud huts, I wanted to find out more about their lives, and to help if I could. I went with a group of other business ladies and there was a great feeling of sisterhood. Hopefully we could share some of our entrepreneurial skills and ideas with the women there.
What are you working on currently? Wales’s first Airbnb pub, which I’m really excited about. This came about because my new partner called me and said I have a business friend with a pub and he’s stuck with what to do with it after Covid. Straight away I thought I can transform it into an Airbnb experience, it will be an amazing venue! I’ll make it work. I spoke to the landlord, and he said, “Business has changed since lockdown I have to find another way to save the pub.”
What types of projects excite you?
17
The pub, my cottage. Taking properties apart and rebuilding them and letting others enjoy them. I’m able to walk into a room or building and instantly feel a feminine or masculine energy, or a negative or positive, and I can feel this vibe very quickly so I can sense whether it would suit a female or a male. I can turn a home with no light and transform it so that it’s full of light and then people walk in, and they feel the positive energy too.
How do you juggle the work/life balance?
I’m forever saying how untidy they are, they just leave their dust and dirt everywhere and I say, “Look! There are no dust and dirt fairies here. Clean up after yourself!” I end up picking up items and tidy while I work.
I imagine every day is different and that keeps it interesting... A typical day starting off with a project means ripping it all up, getting a skip in, clearing it all out, getting it prepped, painted and decorated all in white initially so we see can see what we’ve got. Then I start sourcing the furniture. Sometimes my clients don’t know what they want. I can walk into a shop one day and I’d see a wallpaper for instance “peacocks” and that’s the start point for the room makeover. Another room could be a masculine room because of the vibe - I’ve just panelled wall, added King & Queen cushions and it looks fabulous. Another room could be cactus plants, more teenager. What I’m able to do is look at a space and quickly know what to do with it. I always take into account who’s going to use it; children, parents, grandparents, so there isn’t a section of a room in the house that doesn’t have something there for everyone, even if it’s wellington boots or a hide away for the family dog. What we’ve done in the pub is put in kennels so that when the guests are entertaining, they can put the dogs away safe while they enjoy the evening with a glass of wine and not spent looking for a lost pet. I know it is important to families and a feature they love. Where do you see yourself in five years?
I’ve been evolving so much. My life has been such a journey and, over the last two or three years, I’ve just created a whole new persona. I was once a wife and mother. I’m still a mother, but I was a mother with children at home, a nine-tofive job, two dogs and I’d do the same thing every day - go to work, come home, walk the dog, make the food, put the dishwasher on, get up have a shower, go to work. It was just a job. Was I happy? No, I wasn’t, but you do what everyone else does. You have a curry on a Friday, watch X Factor on a Saturday night, it was literally the same routine every week.
You are very glamorous... Of course, I’m a lady! I love it. I love my make-up and polished nails. I’m very feminine. I love everything to do with being a girl. I love my nail varnish, handbags, shoes and perfume. But it’s not all glamour... No. Most of the time my hair is in a pony. I’ve had no make-up on. My nails are chipped. I’m in a pair of heavy boots. In fact, the boys laugh because I have my own toolbox, my own sander, and electric screwdriver. Typical day turning up on site. I’m the only girl. The rest are all labourers.
The Atlas community don’t have the luxuries we have and, as a cooperative, we weren’t just doing it for them, we were helping the women there gain their own independence by saying that if they used the school building they can make necklaces and baskets that they can take to market and make money. We thought if one of the ladies could make necklaces, Karen from Goose Island in Cowbridge could sell them. And, if one of the ladies made pottery, then I would be happy to buy from them and I could put them in my holiday lets and would be an outlet for the Atlas Mountains ladies. My second reason is that my daughter is twenty-one and I wanted her to experience it. It’s a one-in-a-lifetime experience and we were all blown away by it. When we started off in the mountains, we could hear the prayers. Combine this with beautiful scenery, stunning sunrises, and sunsets. It was emotionally charged. At one point, we went to the top of the mountain - it felt like you were in heaven. And when we were with the ladies and their children the gratitude was immense. They were so grateful – we felt like we were really making a difference. I would recommend anyone to do it. They need a lot of equipment and technology which isn’t cheap. Together we raised the money to build a community centre/school which gives them a place to gather and work. It was a lovely experience, I do believe that when you give, it does come back to you in abundance when you help others. Design wise, who inspires you? Believe it or not, and you’ll probably think this is strange, there probably isn’t anyone. I get my inspiration from brands I love, Ted Baker or Laura Ashley, I get a lot of inspiration from fashion. I do have an obsession with clocks. They are in every room. But I suppose it’s my own take on things that people like.
My life has changed so much now. It’s mind-blowing and I say to myself, “Oh my God, why did I spend time on tears when all I had to do was rediscover what I love doing”. And yes, my life has changed, and with it came the invention of Nicky Bright, because I was going through my divorce, and thinking about a business name. At the time, I thought “Stay Wales” was a good name, but it wasn’t, “Nicky Bright Holidays” was born. I felt alignment to it as if everything was meant to be, and change my name legally to Nicky Bright, out with the old in with the new me.
“A typical day starting off with a project means ripping it all out, getting a skip in, clearing it all out, getting it prepped, painted and decorated all in white initially so we see can see what we’ve got. Then I start sourcing the furniture. Sometimes I don’t know exactly what I’m going to do.”
Looking forward, all the holiday lets will feature the Nicky Bright branding. I will create new properties all being unique, whether it be an Indian or Italian theme, inside I will have products I source on my travelsfrom Morocco to the Atlas Mountains even my own brand that I’m creating. When a guest enters my properties and like what they see, they can buy it from my website. What drives you? I want a good life. I want a great life for my children. I inspire them not to fail, to never give up. I say “Never give up, always succeed!”. If you work hard and keep at it, it will come to you. Describe yourself in three words... Focus. Action. Result. Can I add a fourth? “Fabulous!”

Vale Life met Thomas, Magdalena and Ryan to find out more. Please tell us about yourselves? We’re a group of ophthalmologists. We trained together in Wales between 2010 and 2017 and have remained friends ever since. Having undergone further subspeciality training in the UK and overseas we all returned to South Wales and established Vale Eye Surgeons in early 2022. Why Cowbridge? We fell in love with the energy of such a thriving market town and were overwhelmed by the support from local businesses and residents. Our central Cowbridge clinic location has private parking and offers a convenient location for the residents of the Vale of Glamorgan and across South Wales. How has business been since you opened? It has been fantastic. Establishing a clinic has been an exciting challenge and we are really pleased with the very positive feedback from our patients.

Danica suffered for several years with recurring urinary tract infections. Here she tells us about her Howexperience.didyouhear about Angharad Evans?
I was referred to her by a holistic doctor. Why did you need to get in touch? I had reoccurring urinary tract infections. How long have you had this condition/issue? I’ve had it for two years. Was Angharad able to diagnose this and, if so, how did she do that? Yes, she tested me through a method called kinesiology and then diagnosed me. She then gave me the right supplements that my body needed to re balance and build my immune system. Had you been through the usual medical routes with no success? Yes. I tried everything, from NHS to paying private.
What has been involved in this?
I take herbal and natural supplements that my body needs to re balance and build itself again. I take these every single day and take the amount that Angharad has advised. I visit Angharad once every month (used to be more) and she will test me again through the kinesiology method and see what else my body requires.
Nothing beats a testimonial from a happy, satisfied client. Here we highlight the work of Penarth health professional, Angharad Evans, and one of her many clients, Danica Botto. 210291
Definitely - if anyone is struggling and wants to find an alternative route, I highly recommend Angharad. It is not a quick and easy fix as it takes time for your body to become healthier.
Do you feel better? And can you see improvements?
Since seeing Angharad there has been a huge improvement and I feel like I have my life back again. Are you confident that Angharad is getting to the root of your issues? Yes, I trust Angharad knows what she is doing, and she is always available if I have any questions or need support outside of our consultations.
How has your treatment plan worked?
Yes, she is! How was the process of working with her? Did she make you feel comfortable? Were you confident in her abilities to diagnose you and get you on the road to wellness?
Is Angharad value for money?
Angharad made me feel very comfortable straight away, she made me feel relaxed and I trusted that she was going to help me and diagnose me correctly. Would you recommend her to others?

In the gardening year, summer is the time when all the hard work is supposed to pay off. But what if you didn’t put in the time? What
OF PENTRE MEYRICK
If you’re anything like us, you start the year with the best intentions. “This year, we’re going to plant early. This spring we’ll make sure we get everything in, ready for summer!” Nope, not a chance, didn’t happen. In reality, it was never going to. Fear not, help is at hand. A quick visit to Cross Farm Nursery could turn your dull, lifeless, colourless dwelling (and sick, sorry looking garden) into a veritable Chelsea showstopper. “But how?” I hear you whimper. Baskets. Big blousy, beautiful baskets – oh and tubs, and perhaps some window boxes. Hanging baskets and a few carefully positioned tubs, and window boxes, can transform a property, and there are two ways: DIY and ready-made. Being busy (read lazy), we love ready prepared. You can see and enjoy the results of someone else’s hard work. In this case, it’ll be Charlotte England’s mum. Charlotte owns Cross Farm Nursery and it’s Charlotte’s mum who is the talented pair of hands that creates the vast majority of the gorgeous creations you see on display. And the cost? Well, the prices are very reasonable when you consider what’s gone into creating them. They start from as little as £20. Charlotte is very proud of her mum’s handywork. “She has a real eye for colour!” she says. “She just knows what plants and what colours to put together.” We’re super impressed. It’s an absolute riot of colour in the poly tunnels and all the baskets are fed and well-watered as they wait for a lovely home to adorn. 24

Now you could create your own, but where’s the fun in that? Actually, it’s not hard and the talented team are on hand with plenty of advice. Everything you need to create your own is to hand: baskets, liners, compost (peatfree too!), flowers and feed. If you’re really feeling adventurous, buy some seed to plant for next year! Make sure you read the instructions on the packet though. I ask Charlotte what’s the secret to a great hanging basket. “It’s having a good mix of plants and flowers that complement each other. You’ll want some fine greenery in there perhaps, and some trailing flowers. That’s always nice to see. At the heart should be something that catches your eye. It’ll usually be influenced by your favourite colour.” Hanging baskets are great value for money too. If you water them well and keep them fed, you’ll see brilliant results right through summer and into early autumn. And why stop there? It’s basically the same principle for tubs, pots and window boxes. And, once you’ve bought the tubs and baskets they can be reused the following year. “And you’re recycling! How good is that?!” So, there you go. You can’t really lose. “If you’re prepared to put a little time in,” Charlotte says, “you’ll reap the rewards.” couldn’t disagree more. the ones your mum made thank

If you’re barbequing, success comes down to two things: the coals must be the right temperature and the meat has to be high quality.
Summer is here and we’ve definitely had a taste of barbeque weather but throwing any old cut on the coals simply won’t do. If you’re going to go for it, make sure you get the best cuts from your local butcher. “We only sell the very best,” says Glenn Griffith. “Our customers know our steaks, ribs, sausages and seasoned kebabs are always excellent quality - perfect for the barbeque.” Glenn and his dad Mark have been at the helm of this much-loved, three generation, Dinas Powys butchers for years, so know a thing or too. “We also do a lot of events,” says Mark. “We’ve been super busy with wedding receptions and parties since spring. Our hog-roasts and curries are massively popular.” And just because it’s barbeque season, don’t miss out on your Sunday roasts or full Welsh breakfast. They proudly stock free-range pork, beef, lamb and poultry. You’ll find all the best ingredients at Glenn Griffiths this summer. Follow on Facebook too –they regularly post special offers.

Owner Ruth is a real fighter and, despite the pandemic decimating the hospitality sector, she wasn’t going to waste the opportunity to prepare Mrs Marco’s for its return after lockdown. Together with husband Marco, they worked their socks off and reopened with a fanfare. Vale Life popped in for cuppa. Things have changed quite a lot since pre-Covid. You’ve clearly been busy. It’s been a bit of a roller coaster to be honest. In all, over the two years, we had to close for ten months. Just before the first lockdown, we’d closed for building work and extended and re-fitted the kitchen (which still isn’t quite big enough). We were ready to re-open the week before the first lockdown, but, obviously, could see what was going to happen so, remained closed. However, we used the time to refresh the interior, repainting pretty much everything. And, my daughter, Charly, who is an artist, painted some beautiful signage for me to use throughout the cafe. The large ‘kind’ board takes pride of place inside and has become the heart of the café, conveying the ethos of what we’re trying to create. During the second lockdown, we removed the old, slippery, wooden decking, replacing it with a new, shiny, composite decking and a wider entrance ramp to accommodate the 2-metre distance rule. We had Doctor Who filming in the February when the area was cleared. That was a muddy night. Marco made all the trellis fencing along the perimeter of the decking area. Really handy if any of it needs repairing. You may have also noticed the giant umbrellas, they’re pretty hard to miss. Initially we’d intended these to be used for wet weather cover, however, they’ve turned out to be just as handy on hot, sunny days, as the decking is a real sun trap.
The Piacentina roast is the equivalent of our old brand and we’re supporting another lovely, local family business and helping the environment. I bet you haven’t tasted the difference.
During Covid, like all businesses, we had to adapt. Safety was paramount for us, both for our customers and our staff. One way of doing this was to cut the menu to the bare minimum - offering paninis, baguettes and obviously lots of cake and ice cream. Staffing has also been an issue throughout, so, we’ve taken our time, adding options gradually, seeing what people want and, what we’re able to realistically provide.
We’ve always loved the coffee here. What’s on the menu for summer? Well, talking about coffee. We’ve changed our brand to a local, Bridgend based company, Ferrari’s.
Our breakfasts have made a popular come back. We’ve extended our vegan and gluten free options, but we are going to continue to ‘keep things simple’. However, through popular demand, we have just reintroduced the Fish Finger Sandwich on either brown or white bloomer bread and our Homemade Spicy Vegan Beans on Toast.
This much-loved café in one of the Vale’s most beautiful parks took a hard hit during the pandemic. It’s one of our favourites and we’re delighted to see Ruth and her team bounce back.

“This little gem sits in one of the Vale’s most beautiful parks.” 29
What’s it like working in such a beautiful environment? No two days are the same. It’s not just the stunning views, the wildlife and being ‘in nature’. As well as the everchanging colours of the sea and sky, it’s the ‘feel’ of the park. Porthkerry is a magical place. Almost timeless. An escape from the real world, where life slows down and you leave technology behind (sometimes you must, the signal is poor down here). I love it. So many people have happy memories of this place, it’s almost as if the park has held those feelings. And, then I see new generations making more memories together, I’d like to think that we are a part of that magic. Picnics on the meadow, playing ball. Exploring the woodland. Running with the dog and getting really muddy in the stream. Then, after all that, ICE CREAM! And coffee and cake for mum and Dad.
Where do your customers come from?
“Like it’s namesake on Barry Island, the coffee here is pretty special.”
Customers are coming from further afield these days. After being stuck for so long, I think most people want to visit new places and most definitely appreciate being outdoors much more. We have regular customers harking from Barry and Rhoose but, more and more from Cardiff, Cowbridge and the Valleys. I have one lovely lady who comes from Swansea. Then we’ve welcomed an increasing amount of staycation-ers, from all over Britain. I do chuckle when families from the South of England query their bill, as they can’t believe how reasonable we are.

The main factor that affects business is still the weather, unfortunately, which is why we’re planning an extension for all weather seating. We’re also hoping we can build a separate ice cream kiosk on site, which will minimise time spent queuing for customers.
The cafe itself doesn’t really lend itself for private hire, however, we do offer catering for events held in the Lodge next door and for parties on the meadow. We’ve catered for many birthday parties, and retreats, offering healthy, vegan lunches for participants.

There’s such a laid back, friendly atmosphere and the cake selection is amazing.”
Can we hire Mrs Marco’s for events and occasions?
The Council brought in parking charges, has that affected the business at all? Not at all. The parking rates are very reasonable in comparison with some similar parks further afield. I know the council wanted to keep the park as accessible as possible for all families as it’s such an important resource.

You’re always on the lookout for exceptional staff, who would you like to join the team? As with many hospitality businesses in this crazy time, good quality chefs are hard to come by. We would welcome a call from chefs looking to join our friendly team to deliver gorgeous breakfast and brunch meals from Thursday through to Monday, 9:30am ‘til 3pm. What can customers expect from the café/restaurant side of things? Very much the same concept as before. We’re heavily focused on breakfast and brunch which is what we have become renowned for over the years. We are working on our brunch cocktail menu and hope to be offering a regular bottomless brunch event too. We offer a beautiful afternoon tea on the weekends which is the perfect treat. & DELI
Thankfully Cobbles has come back with a bang. Owner Chloe brings us up to date. When did Cobbles first open? We opened on December 5th, 2015. I still find it hard to reflect on almost seven years as we haven’t stopped since that day. As with a lot of hospitality businesses after the pandemic, you had issues with staffing and had to close the restaurant side for a short period, what was that like? The pandemic has hit us hard. It’s been over two years since the first announcement of restaurant closures. This was the start of a tumultuous and very stressful two and a half years for us and many others in the industry. We lost all of our chefs and had to close our kitchen which was awful. But, fortunately, we are still here albeit things are running differently. The business has struggled financially with taking on loans to survive and now the huge cost increase means we are still feeling the effects. But we are so grateful to still be busy trading, managing to diversify our offering, and pushing things forward with events and opening a chip shop.
How is the fish and chips offering going? The Catch has been open just over a year and it’s been a bit of a rollercoaster. We opened on a Bank holiday weekend, and we got well and truly slammed with customers which was both incredible and difficult all at once. We’ve learned so much in a year, and we feel that we’ve finally nailed it. We use local suppliers for our fish, meat and veg, and we make all of our pies and rissoles in house always using the best ingredients. We’re a fish and chip shop but with a twist. Not your usual chippy! Cobbles has always been popular for weddings and events… Cobbles is gorgeous! We occupy 16th Century barns which are full of character and charm and the idyllic surroundings really make this a picture-perfect venue. Since becoming a licensed wedding venue, things have really taken off with this side of the business. 2023 is almost full. What will the bride and groom be able to enjoy at Cobbles? We have a really personal approach when it comes to our offering. We like to listen to the bride and grooms’ dreams and vision and tailor a package to their needs. We do offer set packages too for those who want all the hassle taken out of their day. We’re really laid back and our vibe is quite bohemian, so we tend to attract this sort of clientele which is lovely.
How many people can you accommodate in each area? The venue as a whole can accommodate approximately 150 guests. You can go for a big affair with everyone you know or an intimate celebration with your nearest and dearest. The layout at Cobbles means there’s lots of choice and options. Will they be able to choose from different menus? We have lots of different menus, from laid back barbecues and feasting tables to more formal menus with canapés and courses. Whichever menu they choose, we can always guarantee that the food will be a memorable event of the day. What about if they have food preferences and/or intolerances? We’re well known for our vegan and GF choices across the board, so this is never an issue. We always offer something for everyone.
What makes booking your event at Cobbles special? It’s all of it! The whole experience from booking right the way through the day. We pride ourselves on our personal and friendly service. The food is always spectacular, the venue and surroundings speak for themselves. Now that we’re coming out of the pandemic, how do you see Cobbles developing? I’m really happy with how things are going at the moment. We essentially have four businesses operating under one roof; the kitchen, deli, the fish and chip shop and the weddings and events, so there’s a lot to manage!
Veganism is huge these days. Do you cater for vegans? Absolutely, since day one we’ve had plenty of vegan options and we are extremely popular with the plant-based community - something we are extremely proud of. We are always developing new and exciting dishes for all. Are you open for people to book parties other than weddings? Yes, our weddings and events team are on hand to help with any event enquiry, whether that be birthday parties, christenings, baby showers, corporate events or funerals. We’re here for all of it!
Do you have a list of companies that you work with or can recommend that the couple can call upon? We have hand-picked the best local suppliers that complement our style and aesthetic as a venue, and we have teamed up to offer the couple discount when booking us both.
The plan is to really focus on getting everything on point, constantly training the team, developing the menu, maintaining the beautiful buildings and continue to offer the best service. 34

Their most popular products are the electric burners, their own brand of candles, Handmade Welsh Candle, and most popular recently has been the introduction of jewellery which has proven so successful that they are expanding the offering. As a family business you can experience a superb level of service and care that can be hard to receive from a large, multinational brand. 3 Rhiw Shopping Centre CF31 3BL 01656 667510

Bridgend has been a thriving market town since Roman times. It still has a fully covered Market Hall which adjoins The Rhiw Shopping Centre. Bridgend, like most towns, has had its challenges but it’s starting to bounce back with great new eateries and fab boutiques.
Dave, Steven, Anne and Hopkin Easterbrook established the business back in 2012 and at The Rhiw since 2016. Following Covid, they realised how important family is and changed the shop's name to their family name, Easterbrooks. They sell a wide variety of gifts: candles, electric burners, salt lamps and jewellery. They are proud stockists of Yankee Candle, Bomb Cosmetics, Ashleigh & Burwood and their own brand, Handmade Welsh Candle.

We caught up with Michelle to find out Whatmore.isscalp micropigmentation?
An effective, life changing, non-invasive hair loss treatment – it’s a form of cosmetic tattooing that replicates the look of a full head of shaven hair or creates the illusion of density amongst existing Treatmenthair.involves depositing natural carbon-based pigment into the upper dermal layers of the scalp with microfine needles. SMP is suitable for all types of hair loss, in both men and women. We also offer training which is suitable for beginners and experienced PMU and tattoo artists. What are your qualifications? I am Level 4 qualified and trained to masterclass level as a scalp micropigmentation artist and hold a ‘train to be a trainer’ qualification as well as a PGCE in Education. We are fully licensed and regulated by Public Health/Bridgend County Council. Who is this treatment best suited to? All our clients have a diverse range of hair loss, so treatment is tailored to their individual needs; from male pattern balding, to receding hair lines that need recreating, alopecia in patches or that cover the full head, thinning due to genetics or medication, hair transplant scarring or lack of density, to surgical or accident scars which require camouflaging. Everyone is different.
What’s the youngest age you can work on?
We are not permitted to perform this procedure on any one under the age of eighteen, but with full permission from a parent/guardian and a medical professional then this treatment can be carried out. What’s the process? We suggest to clients that they can send us three photos of their hair loss (front, top and back of head), to enable us to give them an estimated cost. Clients can then come in for a free, no obligation consultation to enable us to assess the areas of concern, the skin health, check for medical conditions, and carry out any patch tests. Is it painful?

SCALP DIVERSE
Scalp Diverse was established by Michelle Broome three years ago and offers scalp micropigmentation treatment and training.
The procedure is less painful than a regular tattoo. Everyone’s pain threshold is different, but some clients have fallen asleep during treatment. On a scale of 1 to 10 (10 being most painful), clients rate it on average about a 3 or 4. How much does the treatment cost?
“I’ve recently got married and I had my hair, makeup, nails and brows sorted by the wonderful team at Ultimate beauty. The service as always is amazing, love all the girls working there. It is always a pleasure stepping foot inside the salon, all the team make you feel so super special every time. Conveniently located and elegantly presented in the newly developed and increasingly stylish Bridgend Town centre re-generation, Creative Director Kirsten Evans, has created a multi-talented, all-in-one beauty centre, proudly serving the ladies (and gents) of Bridgend and south Wales. Now that UHB exists, we can offer our clients a one-stop-shop salon, saving them both time and stress. We offer a stress-free environment, allowing them to get ready for day-today, work, an event or wedding. How long have you been in the beauty industry? For many years now. I don’t rest on my laurels though. I’m constantly developing my skills and those of my team to provide the latest and most effective treatments on the market. What treatments does UHB offer? My talented team, including Zara, Sophie, Abbie, Angie, Aerun and Georgia offer all aspects of hair cutting, styling and colouring, whilst our treatments range from relaxing massages, semi-permanent lashes, gel nails, eyebrow shaping, bridal hair and makeup, spray tanning, eyelash lifting and tinting, microblading, IPL hair removal and IPL facial rejuvenation. Who are your clients? We welcome women and men of all ages. Word is obviously spreading as we are seeing new clients daily. Not only are our clients local but we also have clients from further afield. How do you like your new home? We love it. It’s a huge space so clients have plenty of room to enjoy the different areas. We’re so much easier to find too as we are right in the thick of the action! We’ve had so many compliments on our décor and styling. Clients say that this and the quality of treatments are akin to what they might find in London, which is high praise indeed. We welcome seeing dogs and have an accessible entrance and bathroom.

Do you hold events during the year? Yes, one of the new attractions we installed this summer is The Teddy Bear Picnic display within the shopping centre, we have received great feedback, so we will definitely continue with different themes throughout the year.
The Rhiw shopping centre opened in early 1970 and was refurbed in the ’90s. It is privately owned and home to seventeen businesses.
As I said, we’re a happy bunch and customers say that they love buying from individual stallholders – not multiples. They like that personal touch plus the variety of things that are on offer – all under one roof. If you love mooching around in markets like us, we think you’ll like this one.
What do you think makes The Rhiw attractive to both businesses and shoppers? It is a safe and clean environment for all to enjoy. We have an onsite security guard that ensures everyone feels safe when using the shopping centre. Our cleaning team go above and beyond to ensure the highest standards are maintained. We often receive comments from our visitors on the cleanliness of the centre and how helpful the whole team are, not just with any queries about the shopping centre but also any general queries about the town centre. What type of businesses will shoppers find? They range from large nationals to local independents, and we have a good mix of retailers offering a great variety to visitors. Any business that comes to The Rhiw also has the support of myself as Centre Manager. Having worked in retail for over twenty-two years, and lived in Bridgend all my life, I have a good understanding of what is expected.
The Rhiw does have some units available. Contact Ben Davies of Cooke & Arkwright.

We also have a picture gallery, a Welsh cake stall and computer repairs.
Is the rent reasonable? Start ups benefit from a reduced rate. It’s a fantastic incubator opportunity. We are a happy, friendly bunch!
We chatted to long-standing stallholder, Eileen Schofield, on what it’s like to be trading at Bridgend Indoor Market. How long has the market been in The Rhiw? It’s been here for fifty years. We celebrated the anniversary this year. How long have you been trading in the market? I’ve been running Cook Mate, which offers everything you need for cake making and decorating and the popular home brewing essentials since 2006.

Vale Life visited Magenta in Bridgend to meet the team and find out more from Gretchen Betts, Magenta’s MD.
If you would like to know more about financial planning for women, please call the Magenta team for a friendly chat.
In an insecure world, financial planning is now more important than ever, but is financial planning different for women?
PASSIONPLANNINGWITH 42
“Generally speaking, the mechanics of financial planning will be the same for both sexes,” says Gretchen. “But today’s women need to think about other things to ensure their future financial security.” We asked Gretchen if she thought women are comfortable with financial planning. “Often we find that women are intimidated about the perceived complexity of this, but, in essence, a great financial plan will work out what you most desire out of life and then organise your money to ensure that those desires become reality.”
“Working with our female clients to give them greater access to financial education, success, independence, security and happiness is one of the great joys of our profession.”
We asked Gretchen what puts women off approaching the subject. What are the barriers? “Well, we know that our women clients hate jargon, three letter acronyms and being patronised! They like straight talking, honest conversations about what is important to them and how to achieve their goals most Magenta’sefficiently.”approach is refreshing to say the least, and clearly every member of the team shares the Magenta ethos.
Magenta Financial Planning Suite 5 Nolton Court Nolton BridgendStreetCF31 1BX 01656 760670 hello@magentafp.com www.magentafp.com
FINANCIAL PLANNING Things to consider A comprehensive financial plan for women needs to consider the following: Longevity Women generally live longer than men so will need more money to be financially secure Career breaks Often mean promotion prospects are reduced Caring responsibilities Can mean that careers are interrupted and/or more lucrative work is not possible
Gretchen gave us a useful checklist that she uses for clients. “Inevitably there are some numbers that need to be considered to give you the best chance of living the life you want, but the main components of a financial plan are not difficult to establish,” she adds. Gretchen is passionate about ensuring women have the information, and tools, to make informed choices. “We know that women value different things in life to men and thus they will spend their money (and time) differently,” she says. “Experience tells us that women are more likely to want to invest their money in good things that will make a positive impact on society, the environment and the planet. They often also place greater focus on the future of their children and grandchildren and want to organise their money for the general betterment of the family.”
WomenConfidenceare less likely to invest and more likely to keep money in cash deposits with poor interest rates Education Financial information is mainly aimed at men and is not “user friendly” for women Deference or delegation to a significant other This often means that women don’t have all the information they need

It’s been a roller coaster couple of years for Nicola Venetia Steele. Redundancy during Covid to Vale Life cover star back in Autumn 2021. At the time, we joked that it was the ‘Blonde Ambition Tour’. Yes, it was an amazing transition, and Nicola always does a great job of pulling the confidence card from a pocket of one of her stylish trouser suits, but it hasn’t always been easy – far from it. For a start, Nicola isn’t married, she doesn’t have children; she doesn’t have the close family support systems that most of us would fall back on when taking a leap into the unknown. “I have my dogs!” she blurts, in her usual sassy manner. “They’re my babies,” she adds proudly. Nic is certainly a dog lover. She’s put on several events in aid of Dogs Trust, Bridgend. The last raised a whopping amount, and her events are pretty much sold out as soon as they’re announced. Talking about selling out, part of the reason she’s opening her new high street boutique is because the “garden boutique” as it’s affectionately named, simply can’t cope with the footfall. “I’m not complaining,” she says. “But I am a little overwhelmed by how popular it has become. I really didn’t anticipate it.” She says she’s surprised. That’s surprising. Nic’s worked hard to build her business and her loyal following of “sassy ladies” is testament to the hours of video promotion and advertising she has committed to. She has a unique style - it’s fun, and funny, and it seems to come very naturally. The truth is, she has a great eye, Nic understands colour, and, probably most importantly of all, she gets that every woman is a slightly different shape and we’re not all stick insects gliding flawlessly down the catwalk of life. “I’m curvy!” she exclaims. “We’re all different. There are things we all hate about ourselves but, because we do that (she makes her ‘ugh’ sound), we don’t focus on our best bits!” She’s right of course. Women are very good at finding the flaws, not only in themselves, but other women too. Sometimes “the sisterhood” isn’t as bosom buddy as we’d hope it would be. Perhaps, that green-eye creeps out because we’re just not comfortable in our clothes, or our skins. What Nic is very good at, is finding “the inner goddess” as she describes it. “Clothes are like make-up,” she says. “They’re the foundation to feeling good. If you feel good in a dress, blouse, or jacket, your confidence will show. A relaxed, confident woman is infinitely more attractive when at ease with herself.” do you do when your income disappears, and the world is in pandemic meltdown? You open a boutique in your back garden! But that was never going to be enough for Nicola Venetia Steele.
What
SASSY & STREET SMART 44
“If you feel good in a dress, blouse, or jacket, confidenceyourwill show. A relaxed, confident woman is infinitely more attractive when at ease with herself.”
La Cocina too – great tapas. There’s the market - that’s brilliant. There are spaces there too! Perfect for someone wanting to start out and test the water.”
To be fair to Bridgend, things are looking up. Some excellent businesses have opened after the lockdowns and there seems to be a buzz about the town. “I’ve learned to trust my intuition over the years,” says Nicola. “I’ve got a good feeling about Bridgend. Something’s telling me this is the place to be right now.”
She’s done a great job with the boutique. Testament to her determination and strong will. “I’m frazzled!” she says. “But I couldn’t be happier. I have met so many brilliant people this last twelve months. And they seem to like what I do so onwards and Streetupwards.”Smart, and that’s appropriate for this lovely lady. She’s dead funny, clever and hard working. At first sight, you may make the mistake of thinking she’s a ditzy blond, but that would be a huge mistake. She’s as sharp as they come – she has a real eye for fashion, and she knows how to dress her customers. That’s pretty smart in the bigger scheme of things. 46
So why Bridgend I ask. Nic lives between Porthcawl and Bridgend, so it was always going to be a toss of a coin to decide the location for the new boutique. “That’s a good question. I know why you’re asking,” she says. “Porthcawl’s lovely, but there are boutiques already there and I didn’t want to step on anyone’s toes.” She had already ruled out Cowbridge as being a commute too far. “Lovely to visit, but a little too far for me every day. Plus, the rents are so expensive. It’s not my price point. I sell beautiful, but affordable fashion. I couldn’t make it work there.” She has a twinkle in her eye, and that cheeky little wry grin says she doesn’t discount the idea somewhere down the line.
I ask her what she likes about Bridgend. “I really like, no love (she corrects herself) the people. Everyone has been so helpful and full of encouragement. I really like some of the foodie places here.
Poco Poco for example, that’s really good.
I’m intrigued by the new boutique. It’s the next logical step but it’s still a big commitment. She doesn’t seem phased at all. She brims with self-belief but, every so often during our conversation, she’ll lean in and ever so softly whisper (even though no one’s listening), “What do you think of this?” Or “I was thinking about putting that there.” It’s lovely. It shows she’s still human and the beautiful, shimmering, silver, angelwinged apparition that appeared at the closing minutes of her last fashion show needs a little reassurance, just like the rest of us. That’s a relief.

GOOD VIBES, GOODSHEDS
The Goodsheds is a mixture of the best independent food and drink, boutique retail and lifestyle, cleverly combined with spaces to do business. There’s even an independent coffee drive through, thanks to Junction by Academy. There has been quite a shift around since our last visit to the Goodsheds. The retailers are now on the ground floor, along with the food outlets, which makes perfect sense. They’re now calling the retail section The Urban High Street, which also makes sense as the definition of urban is “belonging to, or relating to, a town or city.”

SEASONAL & SUSTAINABLE Wild Meadow Floral Wild Meadow Floral is the flowery creation of local Barry girl, Kelly Young and has been established seven years. Alongside Kelly works Claire, also from Barry and Kelly’s best friend for over 20 years.
Kelly’s style of floristry is less ‘mainstream’. Her business name gives this away. Her flowers are naturally loose, wild and imaginative. She uses a number of Welsh flower growers and suppliers alongside Dutch. Her creations are seasonal, sustainable and eco-friendly in the cottage garden, wild style that she has become renowned for.

L ISTEN TO YOUR H EART
This book is my story of how the events that have unfolded in my life have led me to an understanding of the gifts that I have been given by the generations before. Sharing my family story with you is the huge thanks to those whose story has already ended. It’s an appreciation of members of my family, and yours, who lived their lives before us, preparing us to explore the opportunities that come our way so we could do the same for our own children. In practical terms, our ears provide us with our sense of hearing. As an audiologist with 18 years’ experience, I should know it! But there’s more to it than that. I have also discovered that the function of hearing provides us with an amazing sense of well-being about ourselves and the world around us. We feel good when we hear about good things or good events, and we are miserable when we hear negative things about ourselves or others. My dream is that people on their personal journey through life will come to realise, as I have, that loving ourselves for our differences is not a selfish act but a divine state of being that it is our birth right, helping us to communicate with our intuitive self. This book is not going to tell you what to do. It’s just my story of how I have learned to listen to my fears using my intuition and turn them into a message of love, giving me the ability to choose whether to be a victim or a winner. It’s a story of my soul journey from Russia to Wales with love.
When Marina is not treating clients at Clear Hearing Solution or working on her book, she is also busy with her charity project designed to provide free hearing care for children. So please watch this space.

Porthcawl is a popular beach resort, so you’re really spoilt for choice where to buy your fish and chips. It has some great ones, but our personal favourite is named after the real character that owns it.

Just five minutes from the M4, Mansel’s Village Farm Café makes the perfect stop off for some honest, home cooking at its best.
Sunday lunches have proved popular since they opened, and this is served to the table with vegetables served in tureens. Sunday lunches are £9.80, again with children’s portions at half There’sprice.plenty of car parking to the side of the property. Assisted dogs only are welcome.
Porthcawl and fish and chips go hand-in-hand as one of the classic combinations of a day out in Wales in the summer. You can’t beat sitting overlooking the beach in the sunshine with a serving of piping hot, freshly cooked cod and perfectly cooked chips watching the world go by. We really like Mansel. “Coney’s finest fish and chips!” he says. He’s larger than life and a real character, so it’s no surprise this great chippy has a loyal following locally. Mansel’s is a traditional fish and chip shop which has served residents and visitors to this iconic seaside town for the lasttwelve years. “My parents and I love coming here for our fish and chips and cups of tea. Best in Porthcawl.”
“This is a hidden gem and really is lovely with great service and lovely staff.” Gavin Murphy “We come all the way from Ystrad Mynach to eat here. The gravy is to die for.”
So what can you expect at Mansel’s Café?
The usual high-quality fish and chip shop fayre you’d expect from Mansel and his team - perfectly cooked chips with fish, sausages, fishcakes, pies, and the like. But you’ll also find baked potatoes, small, medium, and large cooked breakfasts, breakfast rolls, and curry and rice. Moreover, there’s always a great atmosphere. It’s relaxed and friendly.
Talking about curry and rice, call in on a Thursday or Friday and there’ll be Indian chicken curry, half and half, and a poppadum on the menu - all for £7.65!
From Monday to Saturday there’s an excellent cooked lunch available, served plated to your table. An adult’s serving is £6.20, and a children’s portion is half price (real value for money). Mansel’s also serves up excellent homemade pies, cottage pies and lasagnes.
The business had been trading for twenty years before Mansel took it over last year and, with his reputation for serving possibly the best fish and chips and more at his much-loved chippy in Porthcawl next to the fun fair, it’s no wonder that this great café is firm favourite with locals, workers, bikers, cyclists, couples, and families alike. Everyone seems to love Mansel’s.

You’ll find all your traditional favourites, including fish and chips, faggots and peas, and curry, plus all your usual chip shop gems. Mansel’s also has an outdoor seating area - perfect for soaking up the Porthcawl summer sunshine. Watch the gulls though – they love Mansel’s Chippy too!

Sian Owen is probably more well known for her wedding photography. but she has many more strings to her bow. Here she tells us about those other skills.
How could businesses best use your images?
SIAN OWEN
Ah thank you. Yes, as well as weddings I also offer business branding, family portraits and event photography. I love the fact that I cover such a variety of work. It keeps it really diverse and exciting working with all sorts of people with different requirements. What type of clients would benefit from your photography? Anyone who runs a business be it small or large can benefit from having a unique set of strong images that makes them stand out visually. Anyone who is holding an event (this could be a family party or big corporate event) and of course anyone who is recently engaged and planning their special day!
I work with my clients to get to know them and understand their business brand values and direction. Following an initial meeting, I put together a photography plan with ideas for locations/colours and styling for detailed shoot.
It is important for businesses to have strong, engaging photography that makes their brand stand out and put the right message across to new and current customers/clients. Most consumers will search for products and services online mainly using social platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and websites.
You’re known for your fabulous wedding photography but what other services do you offer?

I travel all over the UK and abroad for work. I am fortunate to photograph weddings in Europe most summers. Italy is quite a popular destination for British couples to get married, it’s amazing to have the opportunity to photograph in such beautiful places. You’ve made Barry your home, what do you love about the Vale? Do you have any favourite places? Yes, we moved to Barry almost three years ago. I feel so fortunate to be living in such a wonderful area of South Wales. We are so lucky to be so close to the coast and yet so close to Cardiff, it’s a perfect location for us. I love the shops on High Street Barry, and the new Goodsheds by the Waterfront have so many wonderful businesses and places to eat. As a family, we love Porthkerry Park (so lovely for walking the dog), The Knap and Southerndown Beach. My children’s favourite park is The Clifftops park in Penarth, it’s quite sweet as I always really enjoyed playing in that park as a child too.
Now that lockdown is coming to a close and, hopefully, we’ll see more wedding and outdoor events happening, are you seeing an increase in bookings? It’s growing positively and steadily over the last few months and I’m so happy to be back behind the lens again. It feels great.

No, this weekend we were heading for Newport. We’d booked a suite on the Friday night in the new Mercure, and we had tickets for Fleetwood Bac at the Riverfront Theatre. We’ve stayed at Mercure hotels before. They’re pretty good and, as we hadn’t stayed at this one, we thought we’d give it a try. We arrived early in Newport and thought we’d make the best of the beautifully sunny day by visiting the Transporter Bridge. This was definitely one of the highs of the weekend as the views from the top are breath-taking. You can see right across the city, the docks, and across the Bristol Channel to Somerset. It’s one of several around the world and, apparently, boasts the longest span and is the quickest – the history is fascinating. It’ll shortly be undergoing a complete renovation which will include a new visitor centre. It should be complete in 2024 and will be well worth the wait. It must be on your Newport bucket list.
Usually a Friday or Saturday night would be the days we might usually head into Cardiff for a spot of shopping and/or a meal. As the Stereophonics and Tom Jones were in town, this wouldn’t be a sensible option, assuming we didn’t have tickets, and we didn’t. Don’t get me wrong, this pairing would be a dream gig, but we just didn’t fancy it and, besides, the Beeb were covering it anyway. Yes, it would have been great to be there but also nice to be at home watching it three days later with a vodka and tonic, which we did.
NEWPORT STATE OF M IND
What do you do when the Stereophonics and Tom Jones are playing at the Principality Stadium? That’s right, you head for Newport, the city that thinks it’s a town.
Back into Newport centre and a nice afternoon walk around the city, followed by a stroll across the foot bridge over the river Usk - there are some great cafes and restaurants on the other side. We ended up in Horton’s (good coffee). Just to the right is Monusk Tapas & Wine Bar which was highly recommended. We didn’t partake on this occasion - certainly next time. We then walked along the river up to the road bridge and crossed back passing the Steel Wave, one of Newport’s iconic pieces of public art. Have to say there are some beautiful pieces of art around the city. Unlike the awful visual drivel you see in most cities, Newport nails it. Clearly someone in Newport Council has taste. Back to the Mercure to check in. The whole hotel is tastefully designed. It’s very contemporary in style and the art is a nod to Newport’s past. I have to say we were very impressed with the quality of the room, and the views from the thirteenth floor were pretty impressive. The overall design is excellent, and the bathroom and shower were superbly designed. The shower is walk-in and could easily accommodate two people. We always say, people make hotels, and the staff can’t do enough to help – a proper Welsh welcome. Its location next to Friar’s Walk (parking) and the train station is, quite frankly, perfect. Everything is within walking distance. Newport itself is an excellent base camp for exploring south-east Wales. If you’re into history, you’ll be in heaven and there is lovely countryside within walking distance or, if you want to venture a little further by car, the astonishingly beautiful Welsh valleys and Monmouthshire are close by. I mentioned the Stereophonics and Tom Jones earlier. While we were staying in the Mercure, many guests were going to the concerts and had, pretty smartly, booked in and were taking the train from Newport to Cardiff – a few minutes’ walk at each end, saving themselves from the chaotic traffic jams and parking nightmare that has blighted recent concerts at the Principality Stadium. Before our Fleetwood Bac experience at the Riverfront Theatre (less than five minutes’ walk away), we had booked in to the restaurant for 6pm. We won’t go into a full-blown review here but to say we were impressed would be an understatement. The food was superb. Perfectly cooked and the staff delivered a truly enjoyable experience. With full tummies, we headed for the Riverfront and enjoyed an excellent show by one of the world’s best Fleetwood Mac tribute bands. Have to say, the acoustics at the Riverfront are very good. I had goosebumps - if you love Fleetwood Mac, they should be on your radar next time ‘round.
One of the floors is home to a section of Roman mosaic flooring, plus a collection of china. There is also plenty of background on the history of Newport and a particularly moving video about the loss of life when one of the docks collapsed during construction. The whole experience was quite emotional. I spent over 90 minutes there and couldn’t really take it all in. Again, the staff were so helpful and welcoming. I stepped out into the rain and headed to my pre-arranged meeting with Jennifer at the newly redeveloped Newport Market. Loft Co, who developed the Goodsheds in Barry take credit for the very stylish overhaul. No surprise really, everything this talented team touch seems to work beautifully. The market is completely covered and is now home to dozens of cool businesses and a fantastic food hall. We decided to try a few burgers at The Burger Boys. We were not disappointed. I munched my way through the legendary Chuck Norris. The quality of the meat and preparation is superb. The two owners were there, and they have invited us to the opening of their next incarnation opening in July. Seeing these young entrepreneurs building a brilliant business is quite inspiring. 62
The beds are excellent at the Mercure. We have kings at home, but this seemed huge! A good night’s sleep was complemented by an excellent breakfast and while Jennifer headed for the high street, I popped across to Newport Museum & Art Gallery. Wow, what a little gem. Three floors include a library and what’s on show is really quite brilliant. The quality of art is pretty exceptional for a relatively small gallery A few personal favourites: Kyffin Williams, Ernest Zobole to name but a few. Naturally, the Chartist movement takes pride of place here and the museum does an excellent job of explaining the events and impact it had on Britain.
We headed out of Newport but couldn’t resist popping into Tredegar House & Gardens on the way home. This beautiful property was once home to the very colourful Morgan family. Their history is fascinating: “Welsh, wealthy and wild!” is a fair description. If you’re near Newport, this is a must visit. The knowledgeable staff are excellent and recanted tales that would make even the broad-minded blush. Before visiting Newport, we had heard pretty negative and disparaging comments about the city. To be fair, for a long time, it hasn’t had a great rep. However, the Newport today is blossoming, booming even. There’s a sense of optimism in the air, things are changing. It’s exciting, and it felt good to be here. The city and its people embraced Chartism, so Newport is no stranger to revolution. We think there just might be another on the way.

Isn’t it funny how you plan a city break to do specific things, but when you arrive, the city takes you by the hand and leads you “a merry wander”. Lichfield’s a classic example of that.
The Hall was built back in 1757 by Samuel Swynfen to a design by architect Benjamin Wyatt (father of James Wyatt) and remained the home of the Swinfen and Swinfen Broun families for almost two hundred years. It’s changed hands a few times since then and the current owner has aspirations for some considerable development: lakeside lodges, a spaall very Lichfieldexciting.isjustnorth of Birmingham. Arriving early, we popped into the Heart Of The Country Shopping Village next door, a collection of converted 19th century farm buildings which is now home to an eclectic mix of indie shops and boutiques, a woodland walk and fairy woods – it all began as a single country store in 1985 and has developed into quite a stylish enclave of cool businesses. 64
SWINF EN H ALL
Our original plan was to visit Staffordshire and walk the canal paths in the area. Friends had visited Lichfield and had recommended the city as being a good place to base our explorations. We found Swinfen Hall and, after reading about its history, and looking over the beautiful website, we booked ourselves in to The Games Room, Swinfen Hall’s one bedroom apartment. It sounded different, and we like quirky.
Another notable little gem there was Heart Galleries, the lady owner has an excellent eye, and we really liked the work on sale. If you like art, you should certainly pop in if you’re passing.
After a lovely look around it was time to check in. As we tootled up the drive, Swinfen Hall made her presence felt. Set in over 120 acres of beautiful Staffordshire countryside, the brickwork of this stylish 18th Century mansion house glowed in the afternoon sun. We were made very welcome and shown to our apartment at the bottom of the house. The warren-esque walk through several rooms, doorways and down a stairway only added to the intrigue. On opening the door, we were met by a modern, spacious (1,200 square feet) self-contained apartment space complete with a huge golf simulator, gym equipment, an arcade game, a full-size snooker/pool table, a serious telescope and a fully stocked bar complete with fridges and ice maker. And we mustn’t forget the 75-inch television. It felt like the ultimate man cave. We were not in any way disappointed. This was all topped off nicely with a beautiful bedroom (queen size bed with goose down duvets and Egyptian cotton sheets), and bathroom area complete with rain shower. After soaking up the experience, we headed upstairs to the main bar and enjoyed a few vodkas and tonics out on the rear veranda overlooking the fountains and deer park and lake beyond. It was as close to idyllic as one could imagine. No wonder the staff seemed so happy and laid back. I couldn’t imagine a more relaxing place to work. That evening we decided to stay close to the hotel and chose to have a romantic meal for two in the apartment. “No problem!” was the reply to our request, and dinner lived up to our expectations – beautifully prepared and served with the smiles we had already grown accustomed to. 65
We were pleasantly surprised to meet a fabulous lady who, with her husband, owns the South African themed ‘Fields Biltong Shack’. We had featured the couple when they ran The Meating Place in Cardiff several years earlier. There was much reminiscing and we all agreed it was indeed a very small world.
Later in the day, we “took tea” overlooking the Minster Pool and enjoyed a lovely hour-long stroll through the rather beautiful Beacon Park before returning to Swinfen Hall for drinks on the veranda – well, it had to be done. 66
The following day, we headed into Lichfield and enjoyed a guided tour which is well worth doing. Lichfield is packed with history, and it has some pretty amazing stories to tell.
Fancying a cuppa, we stopped off at a very cool place called Boomers which is run by the lovely Sue Pettitt - 1940s theme on the ground floor, ‘60s theme on the first floor. Great coffee, fab service and Sue is an absolute mine of information about Lichfield. Boomers certainly qualifies as a Lichfield gem. Just around the corner is a family home that inspired the literary giant Samuel Johnson. Best known for his Dictionary of the English Language, Samuel Johnson spent the first twenty-seven years of his life in this atmospheric Grade I listed trader’s townhouse which is now a museum. I’ve read his quotations on many occasions, so this was a real treat to find out more about the man with the aid of the very knowledgeable curator.
Our last history splurge of the day was a visit to Erasmus Darwin House, the former home of the English poet and physician Erasmus Darwin, grandfather of naturalist Charles Darwin. The house is a Grade I listed (there are quite a few in Lichfield) and is now a writer’s house museum commemorating Erasmus Darwin’s life. Whatever was in the Darwin gene pool, it was pretty special. This was a man way ahead of his time. You’d be forgiven for thinking he was a lot more interesting than his grandson. He was to us anyway.
Being a city, we were determined to visit Lichfield Cathedral, the only medieval English Cathedral with three spires, and were absolutely blown away by it. It really is quite stunning. The exterior carving reminded me of Barcelona’s famous La Sagrada Família. Yes, it’s that impressive.

After a good night’s sleep and an excellent breakfast, our homeward journey was punctuated by a visit to the National Memorial Arboretum. A place we had longed to visit having seen it many times on television. It’s much bigger than you imagine so we opted for a guided tour and land train ride which proved incredibly informative. With many memorials celebrating the lives of tens of thousands of people across all walks of life, it was very emotional in places, and lived up to our expectations. We also enjoyed a cooked lunch there which took us right back to the school dinners of our youth. All in all, a very enjoyable experience. Swinfen Hall is a class act. The staff are brilliant. We had a wonderful time there. Yes, you can visit and stay in one of its nineteen beautiful rooms but, if you live locally, it’s also a great place to hold events, a wedding reception or perhaps a corporate dinner. It can deliver on every level, and we think that’s what makes it so special. We’re excited to see how it develops and we’ll most certainly return (we never did explore those canal paths). Samuel Johnson once said, “The use of travelling is to regulate imagination by reality, and instead of thinking how things may be, to see them as they are.” He wasn’t far wrong. If you’re visiting Staffordshire, this is the place to stay. But don’t take our word for it. 481494 www.swinfenhallhotel.co.ukswinfenhallswinfenhallswinfenhallhotel www.visitlichfield.co.uk
West Farm, Southerndown Coastal Retreat, sits majestically on the glorious clifftop alongside the Glamorgan Heritage Coast path. Could there be a more idyllic location? EST FARM
W
West Farm was purchased in January 2021 by the Williams family, who live in the area and recognised the amazing potential with the building and soon embarked a comprehensive remodel and renovation. This distinctive self-catering retreat on the Vale of Glamorgan’s western coastline “exudes an effortless, rustic charm evoking memories of a childhood seaside holiday”. It has been tastefully decorated with a gentle, maritime vibe throughout and enjoys enviable, panoramic, clifftop views. There are four beaches nearby, a river estuary with enormous sleigh-down sand dunes and a stepping-stoned castle. If you’re a visitor to the area looking for a dramatic getaway in every season: whether sporting swimsuits, wetsuits, summer skimpies or cwtch’d up in your favourite woollens and walking boots, West Farm feels both luxurious and natural. It really is quite special.
SOUTHERNDOWN 68
Here we talk to Alex Williams to find out more about the beautiful transformation of West Farm. Why did you choose to buy the business? Chris Williams was brought up in the neighbouring village of Wick and spend his childhood in Southerndown and Ogmore by sea, Lots of friends and family from the area were involved in the restoration of the buildings and remain involved in the operation of West Farm. Chris has known the buildings at West Farm nearly all his life and had always been overwhelmed by the location and incredible views the property offers. It was a great opportunity and, after a comprehensive remodel and refurbishment, launched in November 2021. What is the West Farm ethos? Friendly and welcoming. West Farm is a family business owned and run by friends and family spanning three generations. Our friendly approach is focused on making a visit to our amazing venue as enjoyable as possible. We love working here and hope people love coming to visit as much.
What can customers and visitors expect? West farm now comprises three separate holiday lets, a new coffee shop and beautiful cocktail lounge which acts as an events space. If you want to drop in with your laptop and do a little remote working while enjoying a coffee and cake, you’ll be most welcome. We have excellent WiFi. 69
We have already had some amazing events at west farm including, birthday parties, engagements, baby showers, live music days, sporting events. We are excited to host our first wedding in September. We are fully licenced. You can hire the venue and arrange your own catering. We’re very flexible. Please tell us more about the accommodation... The spacious self-catering stone farmhouse and both luxury apartments (Nash and Tusker), alongside the extensive lawned gardens, have been renovated and modernised, making it great for families, couples, and friends. If you’re looking for a self-catering break with understated elegance, we think you’ll love it here. The Farmhouse sleeps sixteen, Nash sleeps six and Tusker, four. Whitewashed wood panelled walls, nautical blue soft furnishings, seagrass rugs, brushed metal kitchen finishes. We believe West Farm does coastal style effortlessly. Each of the lounges boasts sea views, and all the bedrooms are decked out with fine linens and indulgent en-suites for rinsing down those sea-salty bodies. And you’ll have no problem getting the kids to bed when they see their ‘bunkrooms’. Back from the beach or coastal walk, and bathed to perfection, relax on your sun deck while food sizzles on the barbecue grill or sink into the sofa and relax with a favourite tipple. You mentioned events earlier, can you tell us more about those? We’re running Sundowner events on Friday and Saturday evenings. If you’ve visited this part of the coast, you’ll know it’s famous for its sunsets, so we thought we’d make the most of it! The bar will be open until sundown. On Sundays, we’re also planning to have live music from 5pm on certain weekends. Please check our socials for more info. Are you dog friendly? Yes, dogs are welcome in the coffee shop and in the outside terrace.
“Lovely little place, ideal for two. Our daughter and partner stayed over one night but the mezzanine was better suited for kids rather than adults, just due to the headroom and getting a suitcase up that ladder would be a bit of a challenge, otherwise, this is a wellequipped, nicely furnished place. Great for some lovely coastal dog walks from the door. All the staff we met were particularly helpful and friendly too. Really nice being able to use the café next door (although real sausage butties would have been a god extra!) We would definitely have made more of it if it had been open more often, particularly the bar!”

Wax, wax, and more wax… Waxing your vehicle puts an invisible protective film between all the dust, muck and menace that the winter months will throw at it. If you do one thing at this time of year, waxing is it. And, if you don’t have time, there are companies out there that can do it for you. Fix the chips, dings and dents… Any time an area of paintwork is damaged, it creates a break in the paint and usually the primer underneath. Once that weakness is there, moisture will get in. Combine that with road salt and you have a recipe for the car’s worst enemy – rust. It really is worth getting those minor dings and chips sorted before they turn into something worse.
Vinyl wraps… You’ll probably think I’m mad suggesting this - I know people who have the bonnets and front ends wrapped (in winter) to protect from the worst the weather can throw at them (assuming they’re using their pride and joy). They remove in the spring once the worst is over. It’s a lot cheaper than painting a front end. As we head through summer into autumn, that gorgeous shine can soon start to fade but a small investment in time and good cleaning products will certainly pay off in the long run.

P1NKSTARTYOURENGINES
P1NK Supercars & Coffee pressed its start button back in 2021. Since then, the business has raced ahead, despite a few false starts during Covid.
Vale Life caught up with co-founders Leon and Lisa at the very cool P1NK Supercars Coffee shop outside Llantwit Major. Please tell us about P1NK... We’re a Coffee shop built around supercar culture. We own and drive them ourselves and wanted a business that could celebrate our passion and share our enthusiasm with friends and fans. Where are you based? We’re just outside Llantwit, on the road to Cowbridge. We saw this site as the ideal space to draw in local supercar owners utilising the space which includes secure car parking and an events field. Do I have to own a supercar to visit the Coffee shop? Anyone can visit. The theme of the Coffee shop is inclusiveness. Like a lot of people, I grew up loving these cars but never thought I’d own one. Luckily, with hard work I have realised my dream. The Coffee shop is open most of the week and we have lots of customers pop in – families, owners, everyone and anyone. Some just for the finest Italian Lavazza coffee, locally made cake, or even to try our freshly prepared all day breakfast using award winning, locally sourced, produce. It’s pretty relaxed and easy going. You mentioned you hold events, please tell us about those... We’ve held a number of owners events and parties at P1NK for marques such as McLaren, Porsche, German owners, MG and an Italian day all with the support and encouragement of the landowners. It sounds like your living your best supercar dream! We really are. Over the last eighteen months we have seen a great number of customers and supporters at P1NK, and we’ve made many friends in the process. Not sure it gets much better. Are all your events in Llantwit Major? No, we have held several events away from the site also, and organised numerous free driving days around Wales making the most of its beautiful landscapes. Most recently we hosted over 65 supercars at the idyllic Canada Lake resort just off the M4, near Cardiff. This was our first mid-week event, and it was a huge success. P1NK is more than cars getting together, it’s about including the whole community and inviting local talent and performers to be involved, helping to promote confidence and create opportunities. Our young performers have been given the chance to perform alongside DJ Cuppy from London - she’s a top DJ and has 9 million followers on social media.
How can people get involved? Pop in and see us at P1NK, Meadowvale Nursery, Llantwit Major. You can sign up for free membership at www.p1nk.co.uk and follow our socials to gain exclusive access to our next events. Just scan the QR code. And the future? What’s around the corner?
P1NK is also going to launch its own exciting NFT collection working with Mclaren which will be launched soon. We are working with the talented team at Rolling Project to capture these beautiful cars in all their glory. We have so many exciting ideas for P1NK including workshops, business breakfasts and owner days – hopefully the uncertain times will soon be behind us and we can drive towards a more positive future.
What about the rest of the year? We are excited for the remainder of 2022. We’ll be working alongside Cars & Coffee Wales, B&B Audio Concepts, Sytner BMW and Alpine Cars. Our next supercar event is a return to Cardiff Bay at the end of August, we have already held a number of huge events in Cardiff Bay with the support of Giovanni’s in the Bay. We are also looking at a location within the Vale of Glamorgan area suitable over 65 supercars, trade stands and visitors and welcome any sponsors looking to be involved. So please get in touch if you’re interested.

If you are stuck in a troublesome dispute, please give Michael a call for a friendly no obligation chat about your options
A Mediator is not a judge and will not give a decision - he or she helps the parties evaluate their respective positions and endeavours to guide them to a resolution. Mediation can take place in person at a venue to suit all involved, but Zoom has transformed the Mediation process.
Arthur and Paddington the Labradors can be a very calming influence. Alphie the Jack Russell can be rather more dogmatic in expressing his opinion.”
Anyone who has been involved in a Civil dispute (an argument over a will, a boundary dispute, a building, or contractor disagreement), will know how difficult and expensive it can be to find a solution. Often people get drawn into protracted and expensive litigation that can drag on for months, and sometimes for years.
Mediation can be the solution and Courts now expect parties to try mediation before taking their cases before a Judge.

It removes a lot of stress if the parties to the Mediation can be involved from their own homes or their lawyers’ offices. Zoom also frees up time in the day which might otherwise be taken up travelling to a mediation venue.
Whether I am at home or in the office I normally have my dogs with me.
Michael Morgan says, “I can travel anywhere to conduct a Mediation but do encourage the parties to try Zoom.
Michael Morgan of Vale Solicitors is a Solicitor and Mediator with almost forty years’ experience of dispute resolution, and he is accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors as an Evaluative Civil and Commercial Mediator. He deals mainly with Property and Probate matters but is happy to take on most types of Commercial disputes. A Mediation would normally be concluded within a day - an attractive alternative to interminable litigation. This can be a very challenging and intensive day involving consideration of detailed evidence over a short period of time.
Can your farming business benefit from Business Property Relief? When planning for later years and considering how to protect and preserve your wealth for future generations, it is important to be aware of the latest tax rules, how to mitigate tax and pass on your wealth effectively.
Business Property Relief (BPR)
To apply for BPR, the assets must meet certain criteria and if all of the conditions are met, BPR can reduce tax on an asset to zero. But, if you let cottages, have furnished holiday lets, or run a caravan site on your farmland - your assets may fall under the exception of the Inheritance Tax Act and be classed as ‘investment activities’ and will be taxed at 40%. A portfolio of let properties used purely for rental or a caravan park quite often falls within this exception.
4. Separate investment assets from trading business - If the investment activities predominate, BPR will be lost on the whole business, including on the trading elements.
If you have a farm which has other commercial uses, speak to our advisors today to protect your assets against unnecessary tax bills later down the line.
Naomiincegd.com/BristolWoods Partner, Ince T 02921 683 151 E infobristol@incegd.com
Agricultural Property Relief (APR)
3. Gather evidence to support a mainly trading profile – such as accurate records and financial accounts.
What practical steps can you take to reduce the risk of losing out on BPR?
Naomi Woods, Private Client partner and agricultural specialist, advises individuals on their wealth preservation plans and outlines the different types of tax relief specifically available for farmers and land owners. Tax relief for farmland owners Succession planning for farming is complex and with farmers increasingly diversifying and considering renewables and lettings, there are tax implications to be made aware of. Upon your death, your Executor, will identify what taxes are to be paid on your estate.
HMRC has frequently used the investment exception to challenge BPR claims on mixed businesses that include both farming and letting.
Overall, tax mitigation is all about planning.
If the main activity on your land is farming, your Executors will first look to obtain Agricultural Property Relief. This can enable you to pass on some agricultural property to your family free of Inheritance Tax, and enable the farm to continue to operate.
2. Assess the likelihood of BPR loss –What are the chances of the investment exception applying? Carry out an analysis to assess the business
In that case, consider anticipating this by managing the investment elements as a separate business to leave the remaining business with a mainly trading profile for BPR purposes. Then BPR might only be lost on the investment business 5. Consider HMRC’s BPR clearance service – this provides written confirmation of HMRC’s view of the application of BPR to a specific business transaction or event. The application can be made before, or after, the transaction has occurred.
If your estate is eligible, Business Property Relief can reduce the tax by either 50% or 100% on some of your estate’s business assets, which can be passed on as part of your will.
However, APR will not cover property with ‘hope value’ (development potential), lettings or large woodlands. In these cases, your Executor should consider applying for Business Property Relief (BPR).
1. Assess the importance of BPR to that business - Is APR likely to apply in any event? If not, what value is at stake?

The Women In Wales charity has donated £30,000 to Welsh children’s projects, following its luncheon back in April, at its presentation event at Bont Gin in Cowbridge.
The money was raised at the 28th annual Women in Wales Luncheon on Friday 8th April at the Mercure Holland House Hotel in Cardiff. Hosted by journalist and presenter, Sian Lloyd, 400 guests enjoyed an afternoon of entertainment and fundraising Toriactivities.James, record-breaking adventurer and author, gave an inspirational insight into her adventures being the first Welsh woman to climb Mount Everest in 2007. Her experiences provided insightful lessons and entertaining stories about what it takes to thrive in the extremes.
Raising funds for children’s projects in Wales is at the heart of the Women in Wales committee and on 25th May Trustees of the charity were delighted and proud to donate £30,000 to fund three projects in Wales. One cheque for £10,000 was accepted by Jo Plow of the 2Wish charity, the second cheque for £10,000 was accepted by Paul Davies, Headteacher of Dylan Thomas Community School in Swansea and a cheque for £5,000 was accepted by Kath Fisher on behalf of the Noah’s Ark Children’s Charity Building Bonds project. Vale Life caught up with Bethan, literally (she really runs quickly), to find out more about her life. Who do you work for? I’m a financial adviser with Curzon Wealth Management based in Ogmore Vale. Please tell us about your experience… I started my career working at Walt Disney World as an interpreter, before working in educational publishing, then retraining to work in financial services five years ago. What type of clients do you work with and, geographically, where do you cover?
4 Commercial Street Ogmore BridgendValeCF32 7BL 07715
I often have to remind clients to plan for the later years - it’s very easy to get caught up in helping your children or ageing parents and forget your own needs. When you’re not working, what do you do to relax? What are your hobbies? My main hobby is running. In October I will be doing the London marathon - my first time running in London but my tenth marathon. My absolute favourite race was returning to Florida for the Walt Disney World marathon.

Ceri Gillett Bethan has been amazing - when my husband was sick last year, she advised us we could claim on one of our policies and helped us through the process; it was such a help at a stressful time. We’ve gone on to do further work with her and I feel like she’s working for our benefit, not the benefit of any big company! Lara Lauder Beth has been invaluable! We had specific questions regarding capital gains tax and Beth has gone above and beyond to track down the answers! She has also spoken with university-age daughters about money, tax, savings, and investments, ensuring it was all explained simpy. As a result, my eldest now has a small share portfolio! I would wholeheartedly recommend Beth. She is professional, approachable, very knowledgeable and a thoroughly lovely lady.
I have clients all over the UK, but most are in south Wales. My youngest client is two years old and the oldest is 103. If you could give one piece of financial advice, free, to anyone right now, what would it be? Take the time to plan ahead. So many of us are dealing with the problems on our plate right now that we don’t take time out to look at what lies ahead. Have you always worked in financial services? No, I actually started my career as an interpreter for the Walt Disney Company. I worked in the theme parks in both Paris and Florida. Then I worked in educational publishing before moving to financial services. Why would clients choose you? A lot of my clients are women who are surprised to find that not all financial advisers are men in suits. As a mother, I understand how easy it is to focus on just keeping the family running right now.
