Passionate about The Vale of Glamorgan
We are a small independent publisher. We are not a large publishing group pretending to be home grown. Vale Life magazine is written, designed and produced in the Vale of Glamorgan for the people of the Vale of Glamorgan.
Our philosophy
We are committed to quality. This quote by William Foster pretty much sums up our thinking: “Quality is never an accident; it is always the result of high intention, sincere effort, intelligent direction and skillful execution; it represents the wise choice of many alternatives.”
Caveat emptor
Advertisers supply their own copy or artwork, and therefore Vale Life cannot accept any responsibility for disputes between advertisers and their customers. Caveat emptor - let the buyer beware.

Yes it’s free. Priceless actually!
Vale Life is distributed free through a wide variety of outlets across Vale of Glamorgan and beyond and is given away free of charge on the understanding that we are happy for it to be lent, passed on, given to friends and generally read until it falls apart. At which point, you can recycle it and we’d be delighted if you did.

The pulp used in the production of the paper Vale Life is printed on is sourced from sustainably managed Scandinavian tree farms and utilises an elementary chlorine-free bleaching process.

Barry based Audiologist, Marina Storina, from Clear Hearing Solution has sent out a plea to anyone struggling with hearing loss, after a new study has found that wearing hearing aids could help reduce the risk of dementia by 40%.
CLEAR HEARING SOLUTION
Marina suggests anyone who believes they are suffering with hearing loss get themselves checked out as soon as possible, Her plea, which follows a study published by The Lancet, showed that people with hearing loss who used hearing aids were 42% less likely to develop dementia than those with hearing loss who did not use hearing aids.
Marina is a passionate advocate for hearing health and said: “There are approximately 11 million people in the UK with hearing loss, which equates to over 60,000 people in Cardiff alone. Many of these people have never sought the help of an audiologist for their hearing.
“This study, along many others before it, is showing strong evidence that untreated hearing loss can lead to cognitive decline. My plea to anyone over 50 is to ensure you have a regular hearing check every couple of years, especially if you have started to notice you are missing parts of conversations or other sounds.”
The study looked at data from 437,704 people taking part in the UK Biobank study. The average age was 56, and the average follow-up time was 12 years.
The hypothesis, known as cognitive overload, asserts that the brains of adults with hearing loss have to work harder to understand the same information as people with average hearing, which may put such a profound strain on the brain that it cannot perform other functions as well.
“Wearing hearing aids can help to reduce the risks of dementia by improving hearing and making it easier for people to communicate. It is clear to me that this study highlight’s the urgent need for the early introduction of hearing aids when someone starts to experience hearing loss,” Marina says.
CHS is now offering discounted prices for the latest rechargeable hearing aids for the following brands: GN Resounds, Phonak and Starkey. Please enquire for more information.

Owning and managing a growing business can become all consuming, even when you’re enjoying it. Work, relationships, life; sometimes it’s good to check yourself and perhaps ask “is this good for me?” It’s something we could all benefit from doing from time to time.
M AGENTA DIVINE
Gretchen Betts owner of Magenta Financial
Planning, Bridgend,is a successful
businesswomanwho loves helping clients understand their money better and to plan for financially secure futures.
However, running a business brings high levels of stress and in the last year she’s looked to modify her working hours to allow her a better work/life balance. Something I think all of us are considering these days. We’ve featured this dynamic and lovely lady in Vale Life before but caught up with an even more relaxed Gretchen recently to find out what’s changed in her life.
You have recently reduced your own working week from five days to four. What was the reason for this? It’s been as aspiration of mine since starting the business. The main drive is about my overall wellbeing but also to spend time being more creative. I love financial planning but it’s not my only passion!
At school, inspired by some amazing art teachers, I fell in love with ceramics. At university I obtained a BA (hons) in Ceramics and spent three years absorbed in the life of a potter, with clay in my hair and dungarees as my daily attire.
In the last twenty-two years of work life, I’ve not been able to pursue ceramics. I’ve chosen instead to dedicate time to professional examinations (I have the highest qualifications available in the UK for a financial planner), and then more senior roles which typically have meant much longer hours. So, I turned to other craft including making large macrame pieces and crochet that I could do at home. I’m always making something.
“We help people understand their finances and confidently navigate through life events, letting them live stress-free and knowing they are in trustworthy hands.”
But now, running my own business, I’m able to be a little more flexible and work four days a week and get to the pottery once a week (most weeks!).
To be able to make this time adjustment in your business, what changes did you need to make?
I’ve had to think about the structure of my working week a bit more, tending to have face-to-face meetings and client work on specific days of the week. I’ve always been pretty good at time management, so I haven’t found it too hard, but sometimes things have to flex.
Tell us in a nutshell, what Magenta offers its clients.
We help people understand their finances and confidently navigate through life events, letting them live stress-free and knowing they are in trustworthy hands.
You work a great deal with women. Is the financial planning for women different to that of your male clients? Financial advice is financial advice regardless of whether you are male or female. It’s not gender specific, but what may be different is the approach women want, and things we need to think about for them. My experience is that women come to me when they have either had a negative experience elsewhere and felt they weren’t taken seriously, didn’t feel listened to, or were bamboozled with financial jargon.
Generally, I think the structure of a woman’s financial life can be different from a man’s, we tend to display different financial behaviours, and we can face a combination of different demands on finances, both from personal circumstances but also societal pressures.
I love working with women and seeing them feel more empowered to make great decisions in their lives!
Do you think people take their financial futures seriously enough? Planning for the future is scary and overwhelming, and easily put off. Also, this stuff is complex! I think people know they need to take it seriously but push it back and delay making decisions because there always seems to be something more pressing in the here and now. In reality, we all have to take stock, understand where we are now, what we have or don’t have, and how this will look in the future - if we want to feel secure and happy. With the closure of most final salary pensions, the pension landscape for anyone in their 40s and 50s now is very different to the retirees before them.
“There are plenty of DIY solutions out there, but many people don’t know where to start and need someone to guide them.”
Lockdown life clearly changed the working landscape with hybrid working becoming ever more popular. Have you personally experienced this in your own office and with clients?
Absolutely, but I also think things were already changing. The reality is that workers now are dealing with so much more information daily than previous generations. We have so much to think about (digitally, a 24 hour news cycle, instant messaging etc.) and we need more time to recover and manage our energy so we can perform well.
I see this in myself, and staff, and the hybrid model of work gives us a better chance of this. I don’t think this has affected clients, we’re still able to deliver a great service.
With inflation dominating personal finance, what advice can you give the modern family?
Try and limit your news intake! Focus on you, what you can control. Try and budget and make cost savings where you can. Concentrate on categorising necessities and discretionary spending. I find this really helps focus what you can squeeze and what you can’t. The reality is, some hard choices may need to be made, we may not be able to do everything we did last year.
Many of the younger generation are now prioritising careers over relationships and living, which possibly means living longer at home with their parents. How can this generation maximise the situation financially?
I think it’s about understanding how mortgages, investments, pensions work and the tax savings some of products can offer. Then maximising efficiencies, so if you are saving for a house, think about how big the deposit needs to be and consider possibly the Lifetime ISA (extra money from government if you save £4,000 pa in this) for this deposit. If not, maybe you will increase savings into your pension, over and above the standard amount your employers’ minimums are, as this is very tax efficient too. In some cases, ISAs, which are very accessible will be most suitable. It’s all dependent on an individual’s aims and plans.
What are the benefits of working with a company such as Magenta as opposed to going it alone online? There are plenty of DIY solutions out there, but many people don’t know where to start and need someone to guide them. At Magenta, we remove the worry and indecision that people often face, because we can provide advice and guidance for every financial decision.
You’ll benefit from highly qualified advisers, providing regulated advice and financial coaching. We’re also really friendly and not in any way intimidating!
What five financial planning tips would you give to:
a) young people starting out in their careers...
Are there any ceramicists or styles that you admire?
I’m a massive fan of Vicky Lindo, but also non ceramic artists like Louis Wain and Yayoi Kusama.
What do you get out of this hobby?
1. Join your employer pension. 2. Live within your means, don’t get into debt.
3. Think about your credit score.
4. Save anything you can. 5. Educate yourself about financial products.
b) someone in their 30s or 40s with a younger family...
1. Ensure you pay into a pension.
2. Live within your means, don’t get into debt. 3. Check your insurance and family protection plans. 4. Consider overpaying your mortgage if you can.
5. Start to consider the future longerterm plans (retirement age, children’s education etc.).
c) someone approaching retirement who has perhaps not been fortunate to make the pension contributions they would have liked...
1. Establish current financial position and if there is any short-term planning to be done. 2. Undertake any urgent gap filling whilst you are still earning.
3. Consider ‘phased’ retirement giving you more flexibility with spending.
4. Understand what you need (and want) to spend in retirement. 5. Work on a plan for best efficient ways to fulfil your desired retirement income (including tax planning).
And d) someone with a healthy portfolio who just wants to maximise their return.
1. Establish current financial position and what your financial plan looks like. 2. Consider any tax planning needed. 3. Make sure you can feel empowered to take action to achieve your goals (for example work less if you can afford to!). 4. Check your portfolio suits your requirements now and in the future. 5. Work on a plan for best efficient ways to fulfil your desired lifestyle, helping those you may want to help financially too.
When did you realise you had a passion for pottery and ceramics? I was probably about fifteen and made a large sculpture of a mermaid based on a famous pre-Raphaelite painting.
Did you have any formal training?
I was lucky enough to have a passionate A level teacher with ceramics experience, went to college and then University. I’ve a 2:1 in Ceramics.
I’ve recently joined the amazing Cardiff Pottery Workshop Foundation and I try to get there once a week. Clay is my safe haven and when I’m working with it, I forget about almost everything else, so it’s a great stress reliever and it’s my ‘recovery’ time.
Where would you like to take it?
Do have any aspirations beyond it being a hobby?
I envisage I will, at some point, want to spend more time making. Maybe I’ll apply for the Pottery Throwdown!
What keeps you sane?
My home and my cats. I rely so much on my home as my sanctuary to escape the work pressures, and time with my cats on a Sunday - maybe in the studio, in the sunshine, listening to country music, it’s just the most special time.
You live in Bridgend. What do you like about the town and do you have any favourite haunts?
Bridgend has so much to offer for those who love good food and drink. My favourite spots are La Cocina or El Prado. I love Lizzi’s gifts too and we always get fresh Welsh cakes from the market for the office.
If you’re not working and throwing pots, what do you do to relax? Walk, eat, drink, listen to music, preferably with friends and family!
Describe yourself in three words. Kind, creative and organised.
Among much fanfare and celebration, Cowbridge recently welcomed a brand-new business to its High Street. Bathrooms Of Cowbridge has ‘tapped’ into the buzz of the town’s central Vale location. Owner Lee Turner tells us more.
BATHROOMS
OF COWBRIDGE
What are your roles in the business?
I’m Managing Director. Charlotte is our Showroom Manager, and Tom is Operational & Installation Manager.
Please tell us about your backgrounds... Besides being Managing Director of Bathrooms Of Cowbridge, I have interests in two other companies which very much complement this business: Tollgate Engineering Services Ltd, and Turner & Morgan Developments Ltd. Both operate within the construction sector.
Tollgate ES is a well-established, accredited electrical and mechanical installation contractor that completes multi-million-pound residential and commercial contracts for numerous clients across South Wales.
Turner & Morgan Developments is a construction business that works for private individuals on residential developments, extensions and refurbishments.
Charlotte Maffey has a decade’s experience in the kitchen and bathroom industry, designing and project managing all sorts of projects from residential to commercial, working in high-end showrooms like Porcelanosa – she’s worked on some incredible projects across the UK. Charlotte previously designed a showroom from start to finish and is Designer and Manager at Bathrooms Of Cowbridge. Charlotte is extremely talented.
Tom Jenkins has been in the industry since the age of sixteen, completing a wide range of plumbing and heating diplomas. He left his family’s business to start his own company at twentyone and ran a successful plumbing heating business. Tom is a real asset to the business.
How long have you both been in the bathroom industry?
Tom Jenkins has been in the industry sixteen years. Charlotte Maffey, ten years, and Lee Turner has enjoyed a thirty-year career in the construction sector, both commercial and residential.
What will Bathrooms Of Cowbridge be offering its customers?
A bespoke offering of creative, considered design, specialist bathroom products, management, and installation services. Our design, supply and installation fulfilment are fully comprehensive. We will take the time to craft a bespoke design that’s tailored to your individual taste and requirements. Next, our team will take care of ordering your products ready for installation. Finally, our professional in-house fitters will ensure your new bathroom is flawlessly brought to life with the minimum disruption to your home.
Not only will your project be managed from start to finish by our expert team, but our prices are also fully inclusive, so you won’t have to worry about any hidden costs or extras.
We are also exclusive suppliers in South Wales for numerous high-end manufacturers who have specifically chosen us to represent their brands. This includes brassware, tiles and furnishings. We have carefully chosen many products from across Europe to ensure we deliver a bespoke, high-end offering.
Why did you choose Cowbridge?
Cowbridge is at the beating heart of the Vale of Glamorgan. It’s a really special town. We wanted to bring something different to the community - a luxury, high-end showroom presenting some of the industry’s leading brands exclusively to the South Wales market.
How have you been received in the town by fellow business owners, residents and customers?
We have been welcomed into the town by many businesses and already have a number of customers who are booked in awaiting their consultations. We are also working alongside some of the local businesses including No39 and Amaris Granite. The owners of No39, Sarah and Sharon, were pleased to help us with the design and dressing of the showroom window, providing some fantastic products. The owners Chris and Amanda of Amaris worked with us to provide some stunning work surfaces. We are hoping to work closely with other local businesses as we develop.
What styles are the most requested?
We find this a mix, depending on customer preference. A lot of people are now looking back to vintage style bathrooms with modern tiles. However modern, sleek and minimal is requested a lot more. Storage is a massive thing in the bathroom industry - customers really want to make the most use of small bathroom spaces.
What are the colour trends for 2023/24?
Trends are constantly changing. Gingham is the next new pattern to enter the bathroom world. We are loving the new Brushed Brassware and finding that chrome is slowing a little, being swapped for the likes of rose gold, brushed brass, gun metal and matt black.
What accessories will be available? Anything stand out?
We offer a vast range of accessories from bathroom furnishings, such as toilet roll holders, shelves, towel holders and more. We will also be stocking The White Company’s products and working alongside No39 which is just across the road. Milking stools is a big trend, and you can see an example of this in our window next to the beautiful copper bath. Everyone loves the copper bath.
Do you install?
Yes, we carry out the installation of cloakrooms, ensuites and complete bathrooms. Once we have finalised designs, we assign an experienced installation team to carry out the work.
Do you have a team of professional tradespeople that you work with?
Rest assured, our installers undertake regular industry-relevant training programs and workshops to ensure they are keeping up with the skills required to install your bathroom products to manufacturers’ requirements, with due care and precision.
Our approved installers have many years of experience in their specialist area but are constantly updating skill sets and improving installation methods to ensure quality service and flawless installation.
Our approved teams consist of qualified plumbers, tilers, carpenters, plasterers, decorators, and electricians.
Our designer will also project manage the installation to ensure your project runs as smoothly as possible.
How long does it take from consultation to completion?
It is difficult to say – it ultimately depends on the client’s preferences. Design, products, and choice of layout and availability for example. We could commence an installation four to six weeks after consultation, or twelve weeks, it really is totally dependent on product selection and availability. Most clients appreciate this though.
What do you love about what you do?
Charlotte: I love what I do - creating dream spaces for customers. There is a lot that people do not consider when it comes to the bathroom – trends and technology that they’re simply unaware of. I love to show people what is available and to prove that amazing things can be done with a small space.
What is special about Bathrooms of Cowbridge?
At Bathrooms Of Cowbridge, we think we work slightly differently from others. Our talented bathroom designers try to get to know you first. We chat with you about what you like and what you don’t like. We go over your ideas, your torn out pages from magazines, your Pinterest boardswhatever it is that inspires you. Before we do anything, we find out exactly what you’re looking for and then we make sure your aspirations are developed into our ideas as much as possible.
We also can provide numerous products which are exclusive to us in Wales, in addition to having partnered with several high end luxury product manufacturers from across Europe.
We also have the support of our other group companies: Tollgate Engineering Services Ltd, for any specialist electrical, plumbing ventilation or renewable energy needs, or Turner & Morgan Developments Ltd, for any specific building design, development or construction requirements associated with, or in addition to, new bathrooms.
We believe both these companies enable us to provide a ‘one stop’ solution for all residential developments, unlike any other high-end bathroom design and installation businesses in South Wales.
Do you offer payment plans?
We do not currently offer payment plans. However, this is something we are considering for the future.
You’ve chosen to work with certain charities. Can you tell us more about that?
We have decided to work with the local Mayor’s charities and support the local community being part of this. His chosen charities for 2023 are Barnardo’s and Afal y Fro. We are pleased to have already made contribution to both charities from funds raised on our open day.
So popular is Vale Laser Ltd in Talbot Green, owner
Mandy Davies has now expanded the business by opening another clinic at Cardiff Gate. Mandy is partnering with Andrea Evans to run this new clinic.
L ASER FOCUS
VALE LASER LTD EXPANDS TO CARDIFF
We popped into their new clinic just off the M4 to find out more about the new operation.
In a nutshell, what will Vale Laser offer its clients?
Vale Laser will be able to offer a wide range of treatments for both men and women, ranging from skin tightening and lifting, to treatments like removing skin tags and blemishes that may be bothersome from a discomfort and pain perspective; or perhaps a mole they may be very conscious of which is distracting or affecting their self-confidence.
Vale Laser will provide a confidential and honest consultation to address concerns individual to that client and match treatments to suit their particular concerns. Alongside the lasers, with the support of our medical team, we can offer injectable anti-aging treatments if deemed suitable and appropriate for their needs.
We have recently been providing treatments to support clients with incontinence issues, whether mild, perhaps when coughing or sneezing, or where it is impacting greatly on a client’s quality of life. This affects so many people yet remains a conversation very rarely had – sadly because of shame and/ or loss of confidence. We are so happy to offer our clients options to reduce and improve this through use of our Emsella Chair and Ultra Femme treatment. Hair removal and thread vein removal is also available.
How many therapists will work in the new premises?
There will be myself as the manager and three other staff initially, alongside two medical colleagues: Andrea Evans RN, Dr A. Williams, Dr T. Kamal, and laser practitioners Bethany Frowen (also a Podiatrist), Helen Butcher and Claire Hamblin.
What is the Ultra Femme 360?
Ultra Femme is a treatment carried out by Andrea as the qualified nurse to help address vaginal laxity, loss of collagen and elastin in this area, dryness and mild stress incontinence, suffered by pre and post-menopausal ladies.
Basically, it’s a revolutionary intimate health treatment that provides complete vaginal rejuvenation, including labial remodelling and vaginal tightening.
Just one treatment is proven to enhance muscle strength - reducing laxity of the vaginal walls. It’s an incredibly effective treatment for stress incontinence and any menopausal or post-menopausal problems that you might be experiencing.
Proven to tighten the vaginal canal and opening, improve your orgasms and reduce dryness, it’s a powerful and popular treatment for many women, especially during and after menopause.
The bonus to this treatment is that it can also improve how your vagina looks, if that’s something that’s concerning you.
How does it work?
The treatment works by inserting a disposable tip of an FDA-approved radiofrequency device into your vaginal canal. It’s not painful at all, the device is smaller than a speculum (commonly used when you get a smear test) and a lot less uncomfortable!
The tip is moved along the whole length of the vaginal canal towards the cervix and back towards the opening.
The small band at the end of the device emits radiofrequency waves throughout the length of your vaginal canal. These waves painlessly penetrate deeply into your tissues whilst gently elevating the temperature of the cells to over 40°C.
The Ultra Femme 360 is a safe and pain-free, non-invasive treatment that is effective after only one treatment.
The internal treatment takes about eight minutes, and an external treatment can take up to twenty minutes. You might need to have up to three treatments, but it depends on how severe your condition is and what you ultimately want to achieve from your treatment.
Maintenance treatments are required, but the good news is that you’ll usually only need one.
So it uses radio frequency? And that is effective?
Yes, the radiofrequency waves combined with the gentle temperature rise, help to stimulate your body’s natural collagen production and enhance blood flow to the area. This is important because increased collagen in your vagina strengthens your vaginal wall, reduces laxity, and improves the ability of your cells to create lubrication - decreasing vaginal dryness.
Collagen also helps strengthen the muscles that support your urethra which improves incontinence issues.
By tightening the tissue inside your vagina, you can even regain your shape before childbirth and improve the appearance of your labia.
“Vale Laser offer a wide range of treatments for both men and women.”
What sort of results can a patient expect?
Typical results expected from the Ultra Femme 360 are:
n Improved muscle strength and laxity
n Tighter and firmer vagina
n Improved vaginal dryness
n Rejuvenation of the vagina –regaining pre-birth vaginal shape and helping a larger or stretched labia appear neater
n Internal treatment delivered by a medical practitioner.
What brands of injectables are you offering?
We will be able to offer a wide range of injectables and these will be tailored to meet the needs of the client, this will ensure we will not be a one-size-fits-all clinic - hopefully this will set us apart. We want to provide an honest, friendly but professional clinic concentrating on supporting our clients, enabling them to make fully informed decisions regarding our treatments.
Please tell us more about the Emsella Pelvic Floor Chair...

Vale Laser Ltd
After four years being based in St Athan, Vale Hearing Healthcare’s family-owned practice has realised its dream of being based in their home town of Llantwit Major.
VALE H EARING H EALTHCARE
How long has Vale Hearing Healthcare Ltd been established?
After a long and fulfilling audiology carer in the NHS and private sector, Vale Hearing Healthcare was founded by Audiologist and Registered Hearing Aid Dispenser, Kimberley Spargo, and we began trading over four years ago on the 3rd January 2019.
Why did you choose Llantwit Major to set up your business?
We are a family run business and our goal was always to open a hearing healthcare clinic in Llantwit Major to provide an accessible, local service to the rural town where we live and grew up in.
Is Llantwit Major your only practice?
We are now only based in our beautiful home town of Llantwit Major since August 2022, after moving from Vale Laser Clinic, St Athan, where we had based ourselves since the business first opened.
Who works in the practice and what are their roles and experience credentials?
Myself (Kimberley Spargo), Director, Senior Audiologist and Registered Hearing Aid Dispenser. Richard Smith (my husband), Practice Manager and Hearing Healthcare Assistant, and my mum, Elaine Baber, who is Clinic Receptionist. It’s very much a family practice.
What services do you offer?
It’s probably easier if I list them...
n Ear wax removal services
n Hearing assessments for adults aged 18 plus
n Hearing aid fittings including rehabilitation, fine tuning and aftercare
n Hearing aid repairs
n Ear protection, including custom made noise and swim moulds.
What brands do you work with?
We currently only work with Starkey who are an American, privately owned company based in Eden Prairie, Minnesota. They of the largest hearing aid manufacturers in the world. Starkey’s UK laboratory is in Stockport, which is where all our hearing aid supplies are ordered from.
Where do your clients come from geographically?
Our clients come from all over South Wales.
What are the common issues that clients come to you with?
Easily the most common complaints we see in clinic are people suffering with ear wax blockage and general age-related hearing loss. However, being based in The Vale of Glamorgan, we are also seeing a lot of water sports fanatics presenting with a condition called Exostosis, an extra growth of bone that extends outward from existing bone, which can be caused by excessive coldwater exposure. We supply custom ear protection swim plugs to help prevent this.
Do you take NHS referrals?
Clients do not need an NHS referral to see us, they can refer themselves to us if they feel that they are struggling with any ear issues including ear wax blockage and/or hearing loss.
Do clients need a doctor’s referral, or can they book independently?
No doctor’s referral is required. Clients can self-refer and book independently via phone, text, email, website or through our social media channels.
Are your treatments affordable?
Our pricing is very competitive compared with other local and national hearing centres. We also have great offers on throughout the year on a range of hearing aids and hearing aid accessories. We aim to make our services as accessible as possible.
Do you offer payment plans?
We do not currently offer payment plans but we are looking into this currently and hope to be able to offer payment plans soon.
What do you love about what you do?
We love being able to help people as soon as they need it as we have no waiting lists! People who have lost their hearing from ear wax blockage will have their hearing restored instantly after the procedure. The stateof-the-art hearing technology that we offer provides a lifeline for people to be able to communicate so much better with their loved ones.
Why do you think clients choose you and your services?
We offer award-winning services! We were winners of the South Wales Business Growth Wellness & Lifestyle 2022 Award.
Clients choose us for our services as we are local and easily accessible. I’ve been a qualified audiologist for over twenty years, and I love being able to provide life-changing hearing healthcare to my local community. Many of our patients have come to us from the NHS and have known me since working in hospital audiology departments in Bridgend, Princess of Wales and Cardiff University Hospital of Wales.
What do you enjoy about working in Llantwit Major?
We enjoy being able to provide this essential hearing healthcare service to our own local community and can provide home visit services for ear wax removal within ten miles of our clinic.
Are there any exciting new technologies or treatments on the horizon?
We have just invested in two brand new, innovative Hospivac suction units to provide a quieter, high performance suction capacity for our micro suction ear wax removal services.
This year (2023) will see the release of Starkey’s all-new Genesis Artificial
Intelligence hearing aids that make over 80 million personalised adjustments every hour, helping patients to hear their best in the most challenging listening environments.
The Genesis AI marks a new beginning in hearing healthcare with a neuro processor operating up to four times faster than previous processors while using less energy.
Do you have regular training with your providers?
We attend regular training events online and face-to-face with our hearing aid suppliers and our professional body (BSHAA), who both keep us up-to-date with practice protocols and new technology.
Have you got any exciting plans for the future?
This year towards the end of 2023, our Hearing Care Assistant, Richard, will be starting his Audiology Degree Course –that’s exciting.
TESTIMONIALS
What patients say
I have just had new hearing aids, which are absolutely great. I urge you to visit now! Exceptional attention from staff, a pleasure to visit. For me to hear clearly againI’m so grateful.
Councillor Gwyn John, Llantwit Major
Brilliant experience, very helpful staff and Richard is the nicest man I’ve ever met! I’m getting on very well with my new hearing aids and I no longer feel isolated. Fantastic Service!
Marlene WilliamsI wish to express my gratitude to Kim (Vale Hearing) for her expert assistance with my hearing aids. I had NHS aids fitted after audiograms. They were partly effective, but the follow up appointments were not booked and involved long waits. They were too brief to solve problems.
So, I sought the aid of other audiologists, three in fact. The most knowledgeable and helpful was Kim who understood my problems and has taken endless care to fit the ideal aids for me. She offers follow up (locally) at various times to suit the patient. She solves complex technicalities to make it easy for the patient. I recommend Vale Hearing unreservedly. Dr M L James.

The GalleryVale of Glamorgan and Cardiff residents will know Eden Landscaping well, spotting the bright green signage as they pass Pugh’s Garden Village in Wenvoe or perhaps you’ve seen their fleet of vehicles going about their business.
F ROM SEED TO BLOOM A POTTED HISTORY OF EDEN
Yes, Eden are busy, and the newly redeveloped extensive show site is a popular destination for people in need of a new shed, greenhouse, garden room or those looking for landscaping materials or landscape gardening services.
Now, as the business celebrates twenty years of success, we talk to owners Jamie Bloomfield and John Whitney as they reflect on Eden’s key milestones. From humble beginnings to a business that has blossomed into what it is today, here’s how they have been helping transform homes, one garden at a time.
How did Eden begin?
When John and I were made redundant from the landscaping business we worked for, we saw our opportunity, so decided to take the plunge and set up our own. Our previous employer lent us a van and tools to help us get started, for which we will be forever grateful. We steadily grew a reputation for doing things properly, ensuring our landscaping projects were built to last and finished to a high standard. This ethos for excellence of service has continued, and we have not allowed it to become diluted as the business has grown.
What are the key moments in your twenty-year-long business journey?
The business has always grown organically over its lifespan, and we have reacted to demand and grown, expanding our locally employed workforce accordingly. At our peak, we operate with five landscaping teams and a garden building installation team employing twenty-three people locally. Moving into the yard at the garden centre in Wenvoe and setting up the retail premises and selling landscaping materials, that was key moment and changed the future direction of the business. The following year we added garden buildings to our offering, further cementing our future in retail alongside the original core business of landscaping and gardening. The two elements of the business complement and support each other and it’s this symbiotic relationship that forms the basis of Eden today.
How has the business and the community changed over the last two decades?
Landscaping has changed over the years. The trends and number of landscaping products, and options available to customers, have changed immeasurably. Gardens have gone from being places to grow, garden and work in, to places to relax and entertain. Low maintenance is a phrase I’ve heard more often than any other when discussing customers’ requirements.
They have become an extension of the home, and this has been reflected in the current trend of porcelain paving and outdoor kitchens. However, there was a shift after lockdown with many wanting to get back in touch with nature and potter in the gardenmaybe growing some food or nurturing a few plants and shrubs.
The garden room has also gone through something of a revolution. The benefits of having a multifunctional space within the garden suitable for working from home; a base for a small business perhaps or maybe a yoga studio, gym or an additional room for relaxation.
What improvements have you made to the site in that time?
We were new to retail and have learnt lots along the way. We have always tried to make the retail site a reflection of our ethos of us as landscapers. We try to keep the retail space looking smart, attractive and a place that our customers will be impressed by and enjoy wandering around. We constantly change our displays and have adapted our product range to meet trends and demand. The garden buildings area has expanded and has become the core of our retail operation.
Our reclamation yard has proved a popular addition during the current economic climate. We sell recycled garden and building materials at low prices for people to use in a variety of creative ways in their own DIY garden projects.
What does the future hold for Eden? What ambitions do you have for the business?
There’s plenty to look forward to for Eden! We want to continue to improve the look of the site and expand our product range, make improvements to the site and the service we provide, and be a place that people enjoy visiting and have a positive experience when they do so.
Someone once said, “The finest steel has to go through the hottest fire.” Since opening her Bridgend boutique just over a year ago, for Nicola Venetia Steele, it has certainly felt like a baptism of fire on occasions.
SOUL OF STEELE
A HEART OF FIRE
Nicola’s transition from a homebased business began on July 15th 2022. The garden studio cabin was creaking. The bijou boutique set up in the midst of lockdown had grown exponentially and there just simply wasn’t the room to deliver the kind of service Nicola believed her customers deserved.
The demand was outgrowing the space and there was literally nowhere to put stock or display it properly, so I knew I had to get a bigger space - a shop! I’d always wanted to; it was always the plan, but not this quickly. It was crazy. Seriously, I was blown away by the response to what I was doing.”
She’s not feigning gratitude for the support she’s had either. Her “everyone’s welcome, everyone’s important” attitude to customers, suppliers and anyone she meets is genuine - she’s one of the nicest souls in fashion. If personality was the only key to success, for Nicola, running the boutique over the last year would have been a walk in the park. Business isn’t that easy though and there have been a ton of things to think about, arrange, manage, plus all the usual fire fights that come with a growing enterprise.
“It’s been a challenge,” she says. “I’m not going to pretend it hasn’t. There have been moments when I’ve sat in the house wondering how I was going to get it all done.”
She’s tight lipped about her private life and relationships (there’s that twinkle in her eye again), but the one constant, or should I say two, are her beautiful dogs Matilda and Sochia. “They’re my rocks! Oh my god, if they weren’t there to cuddle every day, I think I’d go mad!”
As a dog owner, I completely understand and, Nicola’s love for all dogs, transcends the love of her own. She’s a regular supporter of Bridgend Dogs Trust, a charity she passionately supports. In fact, many of her fashion shows, luncheons and events raise money for her beloved charity. “It’s easy for me. My dogs are gorgeous. I love them dearly and the thought of other dogs being lonely and not looked after breaks my heart.” She’s raised over £8k to date and has bigger plans for her charity support over next couple of years.
“She’s one of the nicest souls in fashion.”
“It’s been a challenge.”
We chat about fashion and trends; what’s hot right now, what’s going to be this autumn and she doesn’t ever sound jaded. This is a girl that simply adores fashion. She certainly has an eye for what works on different body shapes and is straight as a die when it comes to dressing her customers. “I can’t stand snotty boutiques,” she says. “Like that scene in Pretty Woman where they make Julia Roberts feel tiny. I hated that! My ladies come in all shapes and sizes and they’re all ages. I welcome them with open arms - I would never tell them they look good in something if I don’t believe they do.”
As we chat, she’ll occasionally spin around to give someone a little advice or suggest something that will complement an item they’ve picked up. At Venetia Steele Boutique, the customer is Queen; “a goddess!” is a phrase you’ll hear a lot here. Nicola’s no plain Jane, that’s a fact. Her shock of blonde hair frames a beautiful face that always seems to carry a cheeky smile, but despite her obvious assets, she is selfdeprecating. “None of us a perfect. God knows I’m not, but we have to make the best of what we have. That’s what I feel a boutique should do - bring out the best in women! Help them be their best selves. It can be hard being a woman these days. We wear many hats, and many masks. If I can put a smile on a customer’s face when they walk through the door, then that’s the buzz, that’s the cherry on the icing on the cake.”
I ask Nicola if she has plans to open another. “Never say never,” she says, and there’s a little fire in those twinkly eyes. The Steele is beginning to glow.

A STATE OF INDEPENDENCE
I AM WOMAN
History and benefits
I AM WOMAN was founded just over twelve years ago in Cardiff. It offers aspiring women in business via an annual I AM WOMAN Membership a whole host of benefits to get ahead of their competition.
I AM WOMAN was created by multiaward-winning, best-selling author, TEDx speaker and Fellow of The Institute of Leadership & Management, Cheryl Bass M.A. Supported by Sara Boltman. Chair of I AM WOMAN, Founder of Butterfly Data, a multi-million-pound, employeeowned company, who started her business with I AM WOMAN, and Vice Chair Rachel Bedgood, who started up CBS in Mountain Ash, that, within just fifteen years, catapulted their growth to £8m+ with less than twenty employees.
Women desire more. Much more! More time freedom and more financial freedom. More time freedom, to shape their work-life to fit in around their busy lifestyle choices. And financial freedom to build a business that can offer them far more income and a greater long term financial security. Yes, women want relationships, but they also want to be able to steer their own path, to be independent. I AM WOMAN founder and owner, Cheryl Bass, tells us more.
It all starts when one day, when a woman wakes up to her talent, her self-belief and her commitment to invest in herself and a business idea that excites her. Very quickly she realises she may have the talent but is lacking the entrepreneurial temperament and the entrepreneurial techniques she needs to catapult her growth to success before she runs out of money, and the energy to keep going forwards when her business might start going backwards.
That’s why joining one of the longest established and most successful premier business clubs for women, I AM WOMAN, could give them the support they need.
Women drive commerce... Women are a very potent source of business for women starting or scaling a business. Any business would be wise to get alongside female customers:
n Women are the most dominant consumers and dominate 87% of all consumer spending
n A recent study published by Harvard Business Review determined that on average women make 94% of home furnishing decisions, 92 percent of vacations, 91% in the home, 60% of cars and 51% of consumer electronics
n Women control or influence 81% of all business purchases
n Women are natural social networkers and sit within the fastest growing consumer market.
Yet only one in three UK entrepreneurs is female. Supporting talented women in business has developed from ‘the right thing to do’ into ‘the most rational thing to do’.
Apparently, women refer ten times more business than their counterparts. Wow!
If women actively support women in business, just imagine the results we can start seeing in the businesses that women are working in, launching or developing?
All three women have a desire to touch the lives and businesses of 100 women a year to turbo-charge their personal and business success. So, I AM WOMAN isn’t a numbers game, it’s a commitment from women to women - to help them transform from where they are right now to where they desire and feel they desire to be.
As an I AM WOMAN Member women can access:
n Highly motivational and financially rewarding ‘live’ I AM WOMAN
Networking Events - helping women to meet, connect, collaborate and do business with other like-minded women
n Weekly online I AM WOMAN Hour Master Classes - helping women to network right across the UK and keep their entrepreneurial skills bang up to date
n Free one-on-one mentoring - helping women feel supported, listened to and access the tailored support they need to catapult their business success
n A two-hour Aspire Master Class – to get one-to-ne support to help them breakthrough a challenge or problem that might be holding them back
n The I AM WOMAN Dragons Funding/ Support Programme - to present their business case to potential funders.
The world has changed. Women, post-Covid, are now, more than ever, looking to start their own businesses. Women no longer get excited by long commute times and the drudge of working nine-to-five.
All I AM WOMAN events are totally supportive whether you are a start-up or scale-up female entrepreneur.
They are fun, highly motivational and are the place to make new friends and new business contacts. Every live event starts at 11am with a networking reception, where women can rub toes with likeminded women in business looking to do business with other women.
At 11.30am there are introductions. By 12 noon we are ready to introduce to our members and guests a line-up of exceptionally talented and experiences entrepreneurial speakers, who take us through to 1pm when we enjoy an afternoon tea as we network, speed network and make some really important connections with women we want to do business with. By 2pm we start wrapping things up and moving on to more informal networking over a coffee together which is where some fantastic follow-up chats and appointments get made.
Our I AM WOMAN members have given us such amazing feedback, here are some of the things they have said about us:
n My turnover increased by 65% after joining I AM WOMAN
n The training is always relevant to by business
n I AM WOMAN coaching got our business a grant of £100k
n I love the fact that our business got signposted to some great free schemes that will really help us take our business forward far faster than we had originally planned.
I think the key attribute women get when they join I AM WOMAN is the confidence it releases in themselves. We see women suddenly coming into their own, standing tall and pitching for business, developing in all senses of the word and just elevating themselves to the next level in business, whatever that next level is in their world.
We believe I AM WOMAN offers an experience like no other. But don’t just take my word for it, step into one of our I AM WOMAN events to find out more.
Experience I AM WOMAN...
Our next live I AM WOMAN live event will be taking pace in the stunning Lanelay Hotel and Spa boutique hotel in Talbot Green on the 9th June. To keep an eye on what we are getting up to please visit our website www.iamwoman.biz
Our online I AM WOMAN Hour Networking and Master Class events run every Monday from 11am to 12 noon and tickets to join these can be purchased

What members say
When I started out as a female founder I felt like a bit of a lone wolf so it was great to find a likeminded bunch of kick-ass women bossing their own businesses. They inspired me, so I am now surrounded by experts - we are all pretty geeky!
Sara Boltman, Butterfly DataIt is such a beautiful network of women who support each other in business. You are not alone when you are with I AM WOMAN, you are supported and understood.
Elin PrydderchAt the first I AM WOMAN event I attended I was quite nervous as I had been invited as a guest and wasn’t sure what to expect. What I found was that I had no reason to be nervous and that these women were not only welcoming but inspiring and supportive. Bethan is a financial adviser with Curzon Wealth Management based in Ogmore Vale and is qualified to advise on pensions, life assurance and investments, including inheritance planning.
Bethan helps clients plan for all areas of their finances. “I look at what their goals are in life, then work out how to get them to where they want to be. This can mean saving for retirement, saving for children, ensuring they have enough life cover to protect their families and look at the best ways to pass their wealth to the next generation.
Benefits to clients...
A lot of Beth’s clients are women who are surprised to find that not all financial advisers are men in suits. “I often have to remind clients to plan for the later years - it’s very easy to get caught up in helping your children or ageing parents and forget your own needs,” she says.
What clients say...
Ceri Gillett: “Bethan has been amazing - when my husband was sick last year, she advised us we could claim on one of our policies and helped us through the process; it was such a help at a stressful time.

Chanya Slorach and husband Hugo established Beauty Box Ltd six years ago. Since then, the couple have established a reputation in both Penarth and Cowbridge for excellent levels of therapy, treatments and customer service.
Penarth was opened in 2017 and Cowbridge in 2022. We visited Chanya in Cowbridge to find out more about the services offered and what makes these family owned salons special.
PENARTH BEAUTY BOX
What services do you offer?
We offer a full spectrum of beauty and holistic therapy which includes: facials, massage (including couples), waxing, eyelash extensions, eyebrow shaping, tinting, microblading, and nails (manicures and pedicures) including gel/acrylic extensions.
How many members of staff work there?
We have a team of fourteen based in Penarth, across our two floors of salon space. We are one of the most spacious salons in the area.
Who are they and what do they do?
Our area manager Kari-Ann is our waxing expert and an eyebrow specialist. Our supervisor Jade leads nails and is a facials specialist. Nicole B specialises in crafting incredible eyelash extensions to our clients’ requirements. Nicole E is our holistic (spa) therapies specialist. We also have a Ukrainian team member who joined us last year, Anastasia, who is a wizard with eyebrows, waxing, tinting, shaping and lamination. Our apprentice Tanya is completing her studies and specialises in nails.
We have several experienced Thai massage experts working with us. Ying, Nok and Arranya offer a wide variety of massage including sports and to those with cancer.
Our duo-treatment space for a pair of massage/facial holistic treatments are popular with couples and mother and daughters alike – they tell us it’s lovely to share the experience and enjoy an escape together.
You mentioned you offer training services at Penarth, please elaborate on this.
Since opening Beauty Box, training our team to complete our treatment offer consistently to our standard, has naturally led to us establishing a business to offer our (now accredited) training to them and members of the public.
Achieving consistently excellent treatment outcomes is at the core of what we do across both the salon and training sides of the business (Academy 64). We have close to 4,000 client reviews online for Beauty Box, the vast majority of which are 5-star ratings.

COWBRIDGE
What services do you offer at this salon?
In Cowbridge we offer Eve Taylor (London) facials, massage, waxing, eyelash extensions, eyebrow shaping, tinting, and manicure and pedicures.
How many staff members work from here?
We have a team of three who work in Cowbridge, including myself.
As this is the newest salon, how busy are you?
We are busy in Cowbridge and already looking for larger premises to better meet client demand. We are fortunate that some of our Penarth salon’s clients were Cowbridge based, and albeit delayed by covid, are pleased to be open and welcomed here. We have hit the ground running.
What do you think makes Beauty Box special?
We seek to provide consistent, excellent treatment outcomes for our clients and do so with the care that a traditional, local, family business should provide in my view. In a world of increasing marketing noise, and national chains on our local high streets - it is easy to forget that those local relationships are key to satisfaction and happiness.
At Beauty Box, we know our clients’ names, where they went on holiday, who graduated and where. We offer a local escape, a friendly face and our consistently excellent treatment outcomes and traditional values when it comes to customer service.
We are also active in our local communities, with our charitable endeavours and care home visits in Penarth (‘a touch of colour’ interrupted by Covid), and our sponsorship of Cowbridge Ladies Cricket in Cowbridge.

“We provide consistent, excellent treatment.”
Kitchens For Living was established in 2017 by husband-and-wife team Nigel and Michelle Jenkins. Since then the business has grown primarily through recommendation and its excellent reputation continues to grow. Testament to the high quality of design, workmanship and outstanding customer service.
K ITCHENS FOR L IVING
Nigel has extensive experience in the carpentry profession and is naturally able to visualise, design and install kitchens as desired by each customer.“He’s also a perfectionist,” says Michelle. “Whether he is doing a worktop change or a full kitchen, his honesty and reputation has earned Kitchens for Living continued business since setting up.” Clearly this husband and wife team are extremely proud of what they have been able to achieve within the last six years. Vale Life caught up with Michelle at the new and expanded showroom.
Why did you choose Barry to set up your business?
I’m a Barry girl born and bred, hence I am very familiar with the area. Nigel and I spotted a gap in the market as there was no other independent, family run kitchen enterprise in or around the area. It has been a true family affair with regards to support received such as, childcare, and help with renovation of the new showroom. Being a small business, all help and support has been greatly received and was very much appreciated.
How long were you at the previous address in Park Crescent?
We had taken on a five year lease in 2017 at our previous address just down the road from our current showroom. Over the years and due to growth in the business, we realised that we needed a bigger space to showcase a
bigger variety of displays, to include not only kitchens, but also boot room, home office and bedroom displays. Call it divine timing if you will: when the lease on our first property was due to end, we were made aware of our current showrooms’ property becoming available, and jumped at the opportunity presented to us.
Who works in the business and what are their roles?
I am the owner and sole director of the business. My husband Nigel is Operations Manager/Carpenter. Michelle Ford is our Designer (who also owns Cariad Home Styling). Ceryl Bateman is our Accountant. Glyn Watkins, looks after Sales.
What experience do you have in installing kitchens?
Nigel’s extensive career in Carpentry has enabled him to offer any aspect of bespoke carpentry - having worked for local and national kitchen companies fitting both kitchen and bedrooms. The craftsmanship he developed led him to be able to offer bespoke carpentry work such as wall panelling, fitted cupboards and display cabinets.
My experience in Sales and Marketing and Office Management over the years, has provided me with invaluable tools to support in the setting up and running of Kitchens for Living.
What brands of kitchens do you offer?
We searched for some time to find the right manufacturer/supplier that we could work with and most importantly offer quality kitchens that we believe in to our customers. Sinc Kitchens is the company we have used since the start of our business for our units and continue to use them.
What we especially like is that all the kitchens are made to order and fully assembled and not flat packed. Also, we work with Welsh companies for our worktops and other British suppliers for our appliances, sinks and taps.
Can you offer any style?
Contemporary and traditional? Yes, we offer any style to our customer to suit their home and choice.
Do you work with domestic and commercial customers?
We predominately work with domestic customers but also welcome commercial.
How long does the process from initial consultation to completed kitchen?
All kitchens are made to order, typically four to six weeks from ordering to delivery. Additional time is then required for our skilled trades to prepare the space and our carpenter to fit the kitchen. Fortunately, we have a great, tried, tested and trusted team so we are able to offer a complete project management service. Customers like that.
What type of kitchen is popular right now?
The shaker style has definitely made a comeback, with so many variations in style and colours available. Clean and sleek line styles are still popular which offer the minimalism look.
How does the process work?
From initial meeting with the customer to discuss their lifestyle and expectations of a kitchen, we offer a home visit where a 3D design package is used to enable the customer to visualise how the kitchen could look in their home. The design and quotation is free with no obligation.
Samples of doors, worktops, colour swatches are available to the customer to help make the decision alongside the guidance of the designer.
What colour schemes are popular?
Grey is still on trend, also variations of blues are popular and the neutral shades. Customers are also asking for two toned kitchens especially if there is an island in the design.
What appliances are customers asking for?
NEFF, Bosch, Samsung are just a few of the brands we offer, alongside Quooker hot taps, Kaelo wine coolers and Elica for extractors.
Do you enjoy what you do?
We love our job, it is a pleasure to be in work in the new showroom and meeting customers. We love the flexibility being our own boss. This also benefits our customers where we can dedicate our time whatever day of the week it is. Job satisfaction in seeing the completed kitchen and most importantly the happy customer.
Trust is huge for us. After all, we are in our customers homes, often when they are not at home. We love the fact that our customers trust us with their kitchen, bedroom or lounge. They also say that we are very personable, which is lovely.
Are your kitchens affordable?
A kitchen is an investment, but we aim to work to all budgets. We also offer payment plans.
Michelle Director/OwnerWhat makes Kitchens for Living special?
As the kitchen is the heart of the home, we love making a difference to the space and helping the customer find a new appreciation of the kitchen. We’re a family run business - a professional and personal service, who are passionate, friendly and approachable. Feedback from all who visits us at our showroom say, it is very welcoming and not intimidating and we listen to the customers needs to achieve their vision and dream kitchen.
TESTIMONIALS
What customers say
I very tentatively approached Kitchens for Living as I was unsure if I could face the disruption of a new kitchen. I am not new to the experience and whilst I wanted a new kitchen, I dreaded the upheaval. The team assured me that they would take the stress out of the whole procedure, and boy did they just. They went over and above my expectations. Took customer service to another level.
Nothing was too much trouble. They were extremely patient as I was dithering with choices of style, colour etc. The whole team, including the trades they used, were a pleasure to have in my home. Everything was done quickly and efficiently. I am now left with a fab kitchen, done exactly to my requirements. Thanks guys x

Since the return from lockdown, we’ve been very fortunate to feature many inspirational stories about amazing women who’ve battled through adversity and personal tragedy. Sometimes, as in this case, those difficult times are the catalyst for incredible life changes.
SIAN HOWARTH
NORAH ROSE STAGING
Spending the last ten years building a successful career in IT Project Delivery for the Civil Service, Sian Howarth, Founder and CEO of Norah Rose Staging, always felt there was something missing. She enjoyed her job, but she knew she wanted something to call her own. Something much more creative.
Seeing a gap in the market, she took the opportunity to “go all in”, combining her passion and expertise doing something she loves, and help others “deliver show stopping interiors as a cost-effective investment with one main goal – to achieve a higher return on their investment”. Confident in her abilities, she’s yet to fail. “I have an eye for detail and just love building something I’m proud and passionate about,” she says with a creative twinkle in her eye. “At Norah Rose Staging we’re renowned for our inspiringly authentic vision and approach! Always overdelivering and ensuring customer service is at the heart of what we do, providing a level of familiarity and trust to our clients, through really understanding what they need and want. We are totally client focused.”
Sian, and Norah Rose Staging, have gained an excellent reputation as a multi award winning, property staging experts across South Wales and beyond. Sian says she instinctively knows the type of furniture packages, design selections and decisions required and can implement them with flair and pizzazz.
She’s spent eight years honing her craft in interiors and property, delivering specialist commercial projects, bespoke projects, executive lets, luxury penthouses, guest-ready serviced accommodation and fully furnished staged-to-sell properties – she really is passionate about elevating a property to greater heights.
Sian’s story is one filled with grief, pain and loss. “My childhood years were far from good, with home life being abusive and toxic,” she says. In her early teens, Sian’s mum plucked up the courage to leave the family home, starting on a long and difficult journey to build up her life again. At the age of twelve, Sian’s life took a turn for the better - enter Dennis!
Dennis taught her right from wrong, encouraged her to be fully herself, reach for the stars, gave her endless curfews and boundaries (which at the time were ridiculous) and showed her how to have a sense of humour – “probably why I take things with a pinch of salt and am ever the optimist you see today,” she laughs. “Things were great!” Life, finally, was good.
At seventeen, life changed again! One Monday evening, on 15 January, Sian received a call from her brother. Instantly she knew something was off and answered reluctantly. What she heard at the end of the phone was the worst possible news ever. Dennis had been playing 5-a-side football with his mates, something he had been desperate to get back into for some time. Being the joker he was, Den appeared to fall over in goal and his friends thought he was mucking about. They did like to prank each other and have a bit of banter. If only that was the case! Dennis, Sian’s dad, not by blood, but by choice had suffered a major heart attack. Words that no wife, or child, ever wants to hear. He had died. “My world felt like it had been destroyed.” Sian felt everything had been taken from her.
The impact it had on Sian and the family was devastating, understandably, and, as she says, “things went to a really dark place for some time”. But being the optimist she was, and still is, Sian knew she had no other option but to push forward with her dreams and do dad proud. She packed her bags and headed off to be a Butlin’s redcoat in Bognor Regis! All singing, all dancing!
“Looking back, I was definitely running away,” she says. “There were too may reminders at home and it was too painful to be around.” From sunny Bognor Regis, she ventured oversees to Tenerife where she DJ’d for some time, and fondly remembers “some of the best experiences ever”.
Even though she was having a good time and a great life in the Canaries, again, she knew she was destined for more and came back home to get a “proper job” and began a career in the Civil Service.
Fast forward to 2020 and yet another massive event changed her life (and we don’t mean Covid). In April 2020, the backbone of the Howarth family, the entertainer, the strength, the legend, Norah Howarth, passed away. Norah was Sian’s Grandmother - an inspiring, authentic, honest and creative lady who was adored by all. “I mean who else do you know who turns up to their 90th birthday wearing a fuscia pink cocktail dress, stockings and a feather boa?!”
In 2021, Sian moved in with her partner Lewis and, as they say, new house, new baby. “I fell pregnant! And it was the most incredible feeling,” she says. But alas, life wasn’t finished with its challenges. Not long after they found out, Sian had a miscarriage. “It was very early on which was devastating. It almost broke me,” she says. Then shortly after, it happened again, and then again. In the space of five months, the couple endured three recurring losses which was “just too unbearable to comprehend”.
Norah Rose Staging is more than just a business for Sian. “It’s my baby, my little gem,” she says. And her passion and determination shines through in all she does. “Whilst Staging is what we do, and we’re damn proud to be doing this in Wales with the reputation we have, we’ve always dreamed of much more!”
I ask her what the future holds for Norah Rose Staging. “There’s so much to talk about, and so much more to come over the next few months - our service location is expanding (think big city lights), a tonne of events are already planned in for 2023, plus some really exciting workshops and announcements (Watch this space!).” There’s that confident smile again. We have no doubt this lady means business. Sian has one question for you all... “Have you got dressed yet? Our team can help you.”
Sian says that moment changed everything, “I leaned in on all the pain and grief, and harnessed it, transforming it into my fuel and created Norah Rose Staging!” What better way to honour her late gran, naming her business after who she proudly describes as “one of the greatest!”

K EEZYS CUTTING IT!
How’s business Kean?
Brilliant. We haven’t stopped since we last spoke. We’ve been doing some great work and have had the opportunity to do some amazing wraps on some very cool cars and vans. Our reputation is building. Word is getting out there thanks to features like this and word of mouth. Customers are giving us great reviews.
What’s kept you particularly busy?
Since opening Keezys, we’ve been phenomenally busy with car and van wrapping, which is unbelievable. Been doing a lot of day vans – Volkswagens, Fords etc. We can do some really wild colours – they’ve been very popular and some cool two-tone stuff. It’s been really fun to do, especially because it’s my own business. I loved working in London but I’m so glad I started my own company.
Do you still get recognised?
Oh yes, it’s nice to be recognised in many places when young teenagers shout “that’s Kean from Yannimize”. I’m humbled by it. The kids especially love what we do because they all dream of having a cool car one day. They’ll hopefully be customers down the line.
I hear you’ve been buying and selling vehicles too...
Yes, I teamed up with another business partner for that and we’re buying and selling vans, doing them up, spraying them, wrapping them, changing their colour and selling them. It’s going well. People want something really cool to drive but simply don’t have the time because they’re busy working. So, we take all the graft away and create vehicles that people want to enjoy. We know what they like because, over the years, I’ve worked on so many projects. We come up with ideas they love but may never think of, so we take all the time-consuming work out of it.
familiar with Kean’s move to his new Coed Cae Lane unit. Since then, the business has been booming with the wrap business really taking off. But this talented lad has other strings to his bow.
“Since opening Keezys, we’ve been phenomenally busy with car and van wrapping.”
What about competition?
There are several car spraying companies on the Coed Cae Industrial Estate. I’d say they’re competing for business but there’s a lot of business in this area. Traditionally people hang on to their cars longer around hereespecially in the valleys, so there’s lots of business to go around. We’re unique because we can offer everything: wrapping, spraying, repairs, paint restoration. We’re about quality. If you want a cheap job, we’re not the ones to call. All our work is top notch. We don’t cut corners.
You’re also offering a t-cutting service now. Can you tell us about that?
Yes, many customers bring the cars and vans in and there’s really nothing wrong with the base paint. They may have a few scratches or small dings and the paintwork might just have gone off over time because of the sun and Welsh weather. Very often we can bring the paintwork back to “as new”, or even better than new. We cut and polish all the top layers of dust damaged paint back and polish it with ever finer pads to recover that showroom shine. You’d be amazed. And it’s a lot less than having a respray or a wrap.
So you don’t regret going on your own...
Not for one minute. It’s all I ever wanted. Yes, I work long hours sometimes, but the rewards are worth it. I enjoy meeting new customers and we all have that thing in common – we’re all passionate about our vehicles. It doesn’t feel like work. It’s too much fun.
If someone wants a quote, how do they get in touch?
Through Instagram: ‘Keezys Customs’. Customers can also call me on 07947 224476. I may be in the workshop but leave a message and I’ll always get back to you.

C ROSS FARM NURSERY THERE’S A REAL BUZZ THIS SPRING
Just like the bees, we always get a buzz when we visit this cool nursery near Cowbridge. The overwhelming feeling is always excitement. If you love plants and flowers like us, you’ll know what joy it is to go hunting for your new spring and summer basket fillers.
Refreshingly, Cross Farm Nursery isn’t too big. It is always evolving though, and in the right areas: more plant selection, complementary products - that kind of thing. It’s a gardenerfriendly, compact and bijou nursery which sells just about everything you need to bring your garden back to life after the ravages of winter. And, refreshingly, there’s not the non-garden related clutter you find at larger centres.
Outside there is a good choice of new gravels and ornamental rocks and stones. If you’re building a rockery or you want a mini-Stonehenge, Cross Farm could be very handy indeed.
Vegetables, herbs and fruit trees
Cross Farm sell a lot of baby veg plants and the quality is excellent – just ask their loyal customers. If we had to praise them for one thing, I’d say they really care about the plants. They are always in the very best condition and well fed and watered. Their selection of fruit trees is really good (we’ve bought some and they’re still going strong two years later – all have taken), and they offer a superb selection of herbs - perfect for your spring/summer salads and cooking.
Flowers and hanging baskets
If you their veg is good, their hanging baskets and flower selection is even better. From annuals and bedding to perennials and shrubs, you’ll find plenty to choose from. There is a wide selection of succulents, ornamentals, and ferns too. Cross Farm is renowned for its herbaceous selection too. Owner Charlotte is very proud of their offering, and you can tell they work really hard to offer customers the very best.
Pots, pots and more pots...
They have a huge selection of pots so you’ll always find the right size, shape and colour for any application.
What we love…
We love browsing their poly-tunnels and we always find something special. There’s an excellent array of ceramic and terracotta pots and plenty of advice should you need it. They have a very good selection of seeds too. Basically, they’re just lovely to drop in - always helpful and cheerful. One of those places you feel better for visiting.
This time of the year at Cross Farm Nursery in Pentre Meyrick is always special, and the Cross Farm team have been busy stocking up for the inevitable buzz that springtime brings.
It’s an independent, family business... Charlotte says: “We’re a family business and keen gardeners. We love gardening as much as our customers.” While there, I always chat to other gardeners and we all universally agree it is “the quality of the plants” that makes this place special. Indeed, as we find on every visit, the plants are well watered and well fed so you’re virtually guaranteed to get them in the best possible condition, and this is especially important as temperatures rise through spring into summer.
So if you’re looking for a gardenerfriendly nursery that’s open all year ‘round at the heart of the Vale, pop into Cross Farm, we think you’ll like it as much as we do.

BEAUTY A DVANCE
SKIN & LASER CLINIC
The popular, family run Beauty Advance Skin & Laser Clinic, is based in the iconic Morgan Arcade just off Cardiff’s city centre (opposite the entrance to St David’s 2). We chatted to its very busy owner, Daniela Evans, to find out more about the latest, innovative equipment: Emsculpt Neo Edge and Emface, loved by celebrities, and currently rocking the beauty industry world.
When was Beauty Advance established?
Our first incarnation was back in 1988 in a small, but beautifully formed, clinic in Whitchurch. We built up an unenviable reputation for our services but quickly realised that the building was too small. That’s when our new premises in Morgan Arcade presented itself and we knew we had to move!
What does Beauty Advance offer its clients?
Basically a whole host of skin and full body treatments. Our clinicians are highly experienced (we only employ the best), and our loyal client base is growing exponentially. We are very proud of our staff and the results we achieve.
Tell us about your new treatment
Emface Neo Edge...
It is the only non-invasive technology that simultaneously uses radiofrequency and HIFEM+ energies to eliminate fat and build muscle. The result is more fat reduction and muscle growth in less time than with any single gold-standard product.
Life doesn’t often venture into Cardiff but, when we heard that Beauty Advance had introduced the latest face and body non-surgical technology to its repertoire, we had to find out more.
“The first clinic in Wales to offer Emface and Emsculpt Neo Edge. Less wrinkles. More Lift. Needle Free.”
EMSELLA
All you need to know
What is BTL Emsella?
BTL Emsella represents a new category of technology that provides a non-invasive treatment for pelvic floor muscles in incontinence and intimate discomfort.
How can patients benefit from the procedure?
First BTL Emsella helps patients to restore the control of their bladder, pelvic floor muscles and eliminate incontinence or any kind of intimate discomfort. Secondly, BTL Emsella is a truly non-invasive procedure where patients remain fully clothed.
How does BTL Emsella compare to the other procedures that are out there?
BTL Emsella is the only procedure that targets pelvic floor muscles and causes deep pelvic floor stimulation because of HIFEM** technology. All other procedures such as intravaginal electrostimulation have a risk of burns and lack the effect as the electrical current treats tissue only superficially, not even mentioning the need to insert the disposable vaginal probe. Comparing to Kegels, patients are not able to properly contract pelvic floor muscles, build the routine to do Kegels at least 3x per day and do them in hundreds of repetitions to see some results.
Who is the right candidate?
BTL Emsella is a great option for women of any age who desire solution for urinary incontinence, recovery after childbirth, and improvements in the quality of their intimate life.
Is it safe?
BTL Emsella is an FDA cleared, medical CE-marked, and represent the first innovative technology that has shown in multiple studies to treat incontinence and intimate discomfort. When you come in for a consultation, the doctor will cover how BTL Emsella works and discuss the unique safety profile in detail.
Is it painful?
That is the best thing about BTL Emsella. Patients say it is completely paintless, the procedure feels like an intense pelvic floor workout. You can sit on BTL Emsella and relax during the treatment. During your consultation, our staff will be more than happy to let you experience the unrivalled comfort of the procedure.
Is there any downtime or pre/post treatment preparation?
Compared to other procedures, there is absolutely no downtime with BTL Emsella. You can get back to any daily activity immediately following the procedure.
When will I see results?
This may vary depending on your age, physical condition, and may other aspects. In general, patients begin to feel tangible results right after the treatment. Positive results typically continue to improve over the next few weeks.
How long do the results last? Do I have to repeat the procedure regularly? Nothing in life lasts forever and this will vary according to your health condition. Studies show that the majority of patients are able to maintain the results 6 months after their treatment. We recommend booking another consultation a few months after your treatments to see if you may benefit from any additional treatments. Keeping a healthy lifestyle is the key to maintain your results in the longer term.
Are you sure this works? It sounds too good to be true.
Yes, we have already treated many patients in our clinic, and we are seeing great results? Everyone is excited about this. There are multiple studies published that document how BTL Emsella helps patients.
How much does it cost?
Well, it really depends. We need to see you to determine your medical condition and recommend how many treatments are needed to get the result you are after. Please give the clinic a call to arrange a consultation so we can provide you with an answer.
How does it work?
EmScuplt Neo Edge works by combining two procedures into one. It eliminates stubborn fat pockets and defines the muscles in the targeted body area. Muscle building is performed with HIFEM energy. It is a high-intensity electromagnetic energy that focuses on the stimulation of muscle contractions. It deeply stimulates and activates 20,000 muscle contractions which are impossible to contract as intensely by just exercising. The muscles adapt to these contractions and start reshaping.
This energy is safe and painless. It activates the muscles without discomfort and makes them more defined and stronger. With this powerful technology, a patient can increase muscle tissue by 25%. The muscles get firmer and the whole appearance gets slimmer and smoother.
Stubborn fat reduction is done with radiofrequency, a non-invasive energy that heats the fatty tissue and eliminates it. The unwanted fat cells are melted away without pain or discomfort. These targeted fat cells get permanently destroyed and are eliminated from the body through metabolic processes. It takes about a month to eliminate destroyed fat cells and the best results are seen three months after treatment.
What body areas are treated with Emsculpt Neo Edge?
The innovative, slim design of EmSculpt Neo Edge applicators allows contouring of the curvy areas of the body, like the love handles or lateral abdomen. The standard EmScuplt Neo applicators contour the body areas like the abdomen, calves, arms, legs and buttocks.
Is there a downtime after the treatment?
No, there isn’t because this procedure is completely non-invasive and safe. The patient may experience mild redness of the skin and soreness in the targeted area, but these sensitivities resolve after a day. There are no downtime restrictions and the patient is free to continue with normal daily activities.
What are the results of the treatment?
The patient can see the first results after the initial session - the targeted area, like the lateral abdomen, is smoother and better defined. The best results are visible after four sessions, one week apart. Once the patient finishes all the sessions, the patient’s body is working hard to eliminate the destroyed fat cells that have been affected by RF energy.
Twelve weeks are usually necessary to fully eliminate them from the system. At the same time, the muscles in the lateral abdomen are building up and getting better defined. The flanks gradually disappear, and the patient’s waist appears slimmer and smoother.
The results, that include 25% more muscles and 30% less fat, speak for themselves. The treatment has also proven to help with back pain!
You’ve also added Emface to your list of treatments. Tell us what this treatment can help with.
Emface works by simultaneously emitting both synchronised radiofrequency (RF) and HIFES-brand energies. The homogenous RF heats up the collagen and elastin fibres within the dermal tissues, whilst the HIFES™ stimulation emits thousands of pulses per session to help contract the delicate facial muscles to lift, strengthen and tone.
Each treatment session lasts only twenty minutes, so it’s perfect to have in your lunch break.
There is no downtime, no cause for home-based recovery, no stitches or the need to wear compression masks or dressings, as you would if you were to undergo extensive facial surgery. A course of treatment is recommended, and you will be able to discuss the estimated number of sessions required, in a no obligation, initial consultation.
What kind of results could I expect from a course of Emface treatments? Emface does for the face what Emsculpt does for the body, and this is exciting news for those who feel that they need to address multiple signs of ageing at various tissue depths.
Clinical research of Emface showed that this treatment can result in less wrinkles and more facial ‘lift’. The findings from nine clinical studies concluded that patients who completed the recommended treatment course experienced on average, a 37% reduction in their facial wrinkles, a 30% increase in facial muscle tone and a 23% effect on lifting.

T RIED & T RUSTED
What treatment did you have at Beauty Advance? Describe the machine and the treatment received?
I had the Emface course of facials. Having spoken to India, I was keen to see the latest machine they had in the clinic, and I’d read rave reviews about it.
Why did you feel the need to have this treatment? What were the issues you were trying to resolve?
I wanted a smoother complexion and, of course, I wanted to minimise my lines.
Who performed the treatment? India and Alana were both performing the treatment.
How many treatments did you have? I have had three treatments.
How long did each treatment take? 20 minutes. It is certainly perfect for a lunchtime lift. Literally!
Was it painful?
Not at all. You knew it was doing something, but it wasn’t painful. You could feel the pulsing of the machine.
What was the recovery time? None.
What difference has it made to your face?
It’s made a big difference already. I can see a more lifted and tighter jawline and my skin is much smoother with less lines.
Will you need follow-up treatments?
Not that I am aware of.
Are you happy with the result? It has surpassed what I expected.
Did you think it was value for money? Yes, 100%.
Would you recommend the treatment to others?
Most certainly I would, and I have.

The award-winning salon, Dean Morgans Salon sits in the heart of Bridgend, in Dunraven Place, which some might describe as “the health and beauty quarter” of the town.
DEAN MORGANS SALON
Dean is so well sought after that we had to catch up with him on his day off to find out what makes his salon so sought after by his faithful and loyal customers.
Dean, how long has your salon been established?
I’ve been here for four and half years and I’m loving every second of it!
Why did you choose Bridgend to open your salon?
I live just around the corner, so it made perfect sense.
What services do you offer?
I cover every aspect of cutting and colouring. I’m a modest type of guy but, I’m comfortable that what I offer my clients is a cut above.
I also offer bridal hair wedding packages and love nothing more than booking the salon out for bridal parties.
How long have you been in the industry?
I’ve been hairdressing in various forms for the last ten years.
What qualifications do you hold?
I obtained my Level 3 at the Academy of Hair and Beauty, also based in Bridgend.
Do you welcome females, males and children to the salon?
Yes, I welcome all genders of all ages.
What brands do you stock?
I use Goldwell at the backwash and I am also a retailer of Goldwell, Sienna X and Osmo Super Silver products.
What styles are in vogue right now?
Definitely the blunt bob. Clients come in with photographs of celebrities that they admire for me to recreate. Holly Willoughby is a firm favourite!
Congratulations on your recent Welsh Beauty Industry Award. How does that feel?
I don’t set out to win awards... but I loved it! Especially as they come from customer voting and reviews.
We also have numerous window display awards as love the fact not just clients but passers by comment or pass just to see these displays.
What do you love about what you do?
I still love the general day to day cutting and colouring, but I do love it when a client entrusts me completely with their hair. When they say, “I trust you, go for it,” and I transform them. They leave the salon a different person, glowing with confidence. That does it for me.
TESTIMONIALS
What customers say
“Dean once again did an amazing job on my hair. I never go in asking for one colour. Instead, I ask for about five which Dean masterfully blends together into something just breathtaking! The colours are vibrant and even when they fade out as all colours do they fade beautifully!”
Alice Briggs“Had my first visit to the salon yesterday. I had a balayage and cut and blow dry with Dean. Can honestly say I’m the fussiest person ever! Dean knew exactly what colour tones suited me from the word go. He was so professional and very friendly. It was a pleasure being there. As for my hair, it’s honestly the most beautiful colour and amazing cut I have EVER had. A huge thank you Dean.” Lisa

What customers say
We had our Sunday lunch at Morgans today and it did not disappoint. The food was fabulous, the wine was superb and the service second to none. We left feeling very full, and Adrian bent over backwards to accommodate our request for a meal for our son who couldn’t make it to the Bistro. An excellent choice for Sunday lunch. Highly recommended.
Iona GregoryWhat a beautiful restaurant and the food is amazing. And the service! Hands down the best restaurant around and will definitely be returning. This was our first time coming to Morgans and definitely will not be the last! Highly recommend anyone going here. It’s fab! Oh, and the cocktails were lush too!
Kayleigh RichardsWe had a party of fourteen for a surprise 40th birthday. The food and cocktails were amazing, and the staff were brilliant. We’ve been here lots and would recommend to everyone!
Rachel BeynonWhat do you think makes Morgans Bistro and Cocktail Bar special?
Customers love our open kitchen - it adds a theatrical element to the experience. They also comment on the rich tastes of food, the atmosphere and the attention to detail that Vic and the staff offer. Nothing is too much trouble. We are also very proud of our wine list. We’ve worked hard, with the help of our suppliers, The Bay Wine Company, to develop an excellent selection. Our customers comment that we are reasonably priced and offer a good variety of French wines. Our outdoor dining also offers an ideal opportunity to people watch - which is very cosmopolitan!

Remember business offerings can change so do check on their websites and socials before booking or setting off.
The hospitality industry has had a real battering over the last eighteen months and way too many of our favourites have had to close. We don’t like the word support, it’s like their begging for business, but as with many things in life, if we don’t use them, we’ll lose them.
BREAKFAST & BRUNCH
PORTHKERRY PARK, BARRY Mrs Marco’s in the Park
Great food, great coffee, great service, and all within one of the Vale’s prettiest parks, what’s not to love?
If you haven’t paid a visit to this fab café in the heart of Porthkerry Park recently, then you’re in for a very pleasant surprise. Ruth and hubby Marco have been hard at work making lots of changes to the décor, fixtures and fittings, giving the whole place a makeover.
The quality of the coffee, cakes and food are just as impressive, with a streamlined menu to cut down on waiting times.
It’s one of our favourite places in the Vale, but don’t just take our word for it, just read what some of owner Ruth’s customers have to say.
BARRY ISLAND
Marco’s Cafe
We’re “not gonna lie to you”, Marco’s Café on Barry Island was famous before Gavin & Stacey. Renowned for its great coffee, happy banter and appallingly bad jokes from owner Marco Zeraschi, this Italian/Welsh café is a true Vale gem.
“We love it here. When we ask the kids what they want to do, they always ask to come to Mrs Marco’s.”
“The food is simple, but beautifully cooked and always fresh. Please don’t ever change cooking your food fresh to order. You can really taste the difference.”
This iconic shrine to good coffee is a regular haunt of ours. The clientele changes through the day. The early birds are there at the crack of dawn and it’s super popular with visitors from across the UK.
The staff are brilliant, and it seems to attract a lovely group of customers. The Marco’s gang serve a superb range of reasonably priced coffees and beverages, paninis, pasties, pizza (obviously) and ice cream.
And we mustn’t forget the cakes. Their cakes are “molto delizioso” as Marco would say.
If you love to people watch, this is the place. All life is here, and no visit to Barry Island is complete without a photo in front of the Gavin & Stacey cast.
“There’s nowhere else like this. We love what you do. There’s such a laid back, friendly atmosphere and the cake selection is amazing.”
“Oh my goodness. There goes my diet!”
Marco’s in the Park
There’s nothing nicer than enjoying a breakfast or brunch with family, friends or colleagues and the Vale has some of the very best to offer. Here are some of our favourites.
Bridgend
Café Aroma is very, very good. Lovely interior, wonderful friendly staff (we often pop in if we’ve visited Venetia Steele Boutique. Morgans is nearby too (check out the feature on pages 74-75).
Barry
We really like Maggie Jo’s Coffee House, on the High Street. Excellent breakfasts there. Romilly’s on The Knap is fab. The ladies are lovely, and breakfast can often end up being cake. It’s lovely cake though, and the coffee’s good. Plus, you can have a stroll afterwards to walk off the guilt. If you’re on the go, then the infamous Bapman Special burger awaits. It is arguably the best burger in the Vale. Owner Andy, The Bapman, is brilliant. You’ll find him in the carpark of LBS Builders Merchants. Marco’s and Mrs Marco’s have their fans (we count ourselves among them).
You’ll know by now that Hilary & Iain’s is one of our favourite Sunday Lunch hangouts, but their brunch is equally as good.
H ILARY & I AIN’S
OGMORE-BY-SEA
This cool, compact and bijou café in Ogmore overlooks the sea, Porthcawl and the Devon coast beyond. On late spring and summer evenings the sunsets are world class. But it isn’t just the rays that bring loyal customers to its tables. Consistency is the key word here and they repeatedly deliver on great quality and flavour.
In the evenings you can enjoy all the H&I favourites, but lunchtime too is certainly a good time to book. I say book because, due to demand and its compact size, it can fill up pretty quickly - and does, even with its additional outside seating.
Brunch-wise, steak is popular here (I like mine really pink and it’s always perfect), as is any in-season fish (they do a wicked takeaway fish and chips), home-made pies are popular too, as is the homemade lasagne - one of our personal favourites. Our son reckons it’s the best in the Vale. He should know, he’s tried most of them. The three cuts of lamb are superb as are their pies. Had a chicken and ham with flaky pastry there recently and it was simply 10/10.
Iain’ would hate us calling him a chef – he cooks, and he’s really rather good at it. The menu is, refreshingly, an unpretentious fusion of British, French, Asian and “wherever they’ve been” cuisine. Between them, this lovely couple turn out some of the best home cooking in The Vale.
Hilary’s desserts are legendary. The sticky toffee pudding is sublime, and her bread-and-butter pudding is as good as you’ll taste anywhere.
If you haven’t tried them, give them a call. You might, just might, like us, find one of your favourite foodie places ever.
Cowbridge
Fredwells is just off the A48. Well worth a visit and there are some cool businesses next to it in this beautiful rural enclave tucked away in a small valley. Great for walks. Of course, The Penny Farthing in Cowbridge is on our list - we do like it there.
Just up the A48 is Forage Farm Shop and Kitchen. What can we say? Superb. Breakfast is excellent (we particularly love the salmon and poached eggs).
Dinas Powys
Kin+Ilk have recently opened. Not sure what the offering is but the times we’ve visited their Cardiff venues it has been excellent. Of course, if you want to cook your own, pop into Glenn Griffith - this popular butcher and deli is producing some amazing products. Again, excellent coffee in the deli.
Llantwit Major
Coast has a loyal fanbase and quite rightly so. Their breakfasts are excellent value for money – you’ll certainly not leave hungry. Just up the road is The Corner by SITI. Breakfasts and brunch here are superb. Tastefully designed interior complements the great service and beautifully presented food. A real favourite.
Penarth
We love The Busy Teapot. The boys are cheeky chappies, and their food is home cooked. Great breakfasts there and their homemade chicken pie is divine. It’s unpretentious and great value for money. The Galley down on the Marina is just awesome. Their maritime themed breakfasts are brilliant, and we love the big screen with quirky facts popping up. They get it right every time.
Pontyclun
We can certainly recommend Porcellini’s and just down the road is John Hughes Butchers if you want to rustle up your own full Welsh.
BREAKFAST & BRUNCH
If popping out for breakfast
T HE BIG BREAKFAST
GLENN GRIFFITH BUTCHERS & DELI
When it comes to breakfast, sometimes you just don’t want to get out of those pyjamas – and even if you fancied brunch, you just don’t feel like leaving the house. Well, that’s not a problem if your fridge is full of the best ingredients sourced from your local indie butcher.
Glenn Griffith Butchers in Dinas Powys has an awesome reputation for providing some of the best breakfast and brunch staples you’ll ever hope to taste. From steaks (rib-eye, sirloin, rump or their legendary tomahawk), to a superb range of sausages, Glenn Griffiths delivers every time.
If pork is your go to, you’re honestly in heaven – pork chops, ribs, bacon, you name it, it’s here. Lamb your thing? Well, it is Spring, and you’ll find some of the best cuts here. Want eggs with that? No problem. This local butcher stocks some of the best eggs available locally (we get lots of double yolkers).
They sell black pudding too and chicken livers (OMG, you must try those with bacon and a little cream). Plus, a whole array of deli foods to complement the most luxurious lunch, brunch or breakfast.
And if you really don’t want to stay in, pop over to their deli, sit yourself down and tuck into a scrummy panini. Their coffee is pretty good too as are the pastries and cakes. The deli is a great place to chill. No wonder it’s proven so popular with locals since opening.
So if you’re looking for the very best locally sourced produce, pop into Glenn Griffith Butchers & Deli. Whichever you choose, you’ll enjoy the superb service and a warm welcome.
Don’t forget their event catering
Now taking bookings for spring and summer. Their event catering is incredibly popular. No surprise really, they offer a delicious hog roast and a selection of mouth-watering curries and burgers.
of brunch just isn’t on the cards, you can always recreate the experience at home.
Pyle
Mansel’s Café on the industrial estate is the go-to for tradespeople as you can imagine. The food is great (real value for money) and Mansel and the staff are lovely. You can understand why it’s so incredibly popular with the locals. If you’re visiting Pyle Garden Village, then you must pop into The Olive Tree Restaurant. Lovely ambience and the food offering is five stars. We love their cheesy omelettes – very French. For their omelettes alone they get a 10/10.
Southerndown and Ogmore
West Farm Barn has stunning views and it’s had a major makeover in recent years. The coffee is top notch and the food equally so. Just up the road in Ogmore is Hilary & Iain’s (probably the best lamb Sunday lunch in the Vale), and the brunch offering is excellent. This compact, quirky, bijou and unpretentious venue is one of our Vale gems.
Talbot Green
Lanelay Hall is just amazing. Always check though as they seem to be constantly improving their offering (owner Dave never stops!). As with all, check they are open and what’s on the menu.
There are many, many more. We’d love to hear your favourites – please drop us a line with your recommendations.
Who doesn’t love a good “old school” café with great food at old school prices? That’s just what loyal customers get at Mansel’s Village Farm Café in Pyle.
M ANSEL’S V ILLAGE FARM C AFÉ
Mansel took the Village Farm café over a few years back over last year and, with his reputation for serving possibly the best fish and chips and more at his much-loved chippy in Porthcawl next to the fun fair, it’s no wonder that this great café has become a firm favourite with locals, workers, bikers, cyclists, couples, and families alike. Everyone seems to love Mansel’s.
So what can you expect at Mansel’s Café?
The usual high-quality fish and chip shop fayre you’d expect from Mansel and his team - perfectly cooked chips with fish, sausages, fishcakes, pies, and the like. But you’ll also find baked potatoes, small, medium, and large cooked breakfasts, breakfast rolls, and curry and rice. Moreover, there’s always a great atmosphere. It’s relaxed and friendly.
Talking about curry and rice, call in on a Thursday or Friday and there’ll be Indian chicken curry, half and half, and a poppadum on the menu. From Monday to Sunday there’s an excellent cooked lunch available, served plated to your table, and a children’s portion is half price (real value for money).
You can order their very popular cooked dinners 11.30am to 2pm Monday to Friday. They have proved popular since they opened.
There’s plenty of car parking to the side of the property. Assisted dogs only are welcome.
Just five minutes from the M4, Mansel’s Village Farm Café makes the perfect stop off for some honest, home cooking at its best.
COULD OUR SKIN ACTUALLY
Whether you’re in your 20s, 30s, 40s or 50s and beyond, Vale Laser Clinic has the treatments to combat the skincare concerns that you should be addressing at each decade of your life and, of course, how to treat them.
The products you use in your early 20s may not be as effective a few years later as your skin matures. You want to adjust your products and routines according to your skin’s current needs.. We chatted to owner of Vale Laser Clinic, Emma Griffiths to find out more.
What happens to your skin in your 20s?
The biggest skincare concern I hear from our clients in their 20s is slight dullness and looking more tired. This tends to occur in the mid to late 20s. These issues can be caused by sun damage that has started to accumulate over time, lack of sleep, stress, or even genetics.
Though your skin probably doesn’t show signs of aging yet, wearing SPF everyday, for years to come will only help your skin in the long run. I can’t stress enough the importance of daily sunscreen use including sunscreen in your makeup. Use a separate broadspectrum sunscreen with a minimum of SPF 30 every single day (yes, including the days you don’t go outside) to protect your skin from all light sources, including the one that comes from your laptop or phone screen.
I would also suggest, even if you don’t have acne breakouts, to add either an AHA/BHA-based serum or a topical retinol to your skincare routine to help address dullness and encourage gentle exfoliation.
What about your 30s?
Your 30s are a transitional time, because your skin is completely post-puberty (which can sometimes go into your late 20s). Thirty-somethings are typically more stable in all aspects of their lives and are able to not only invest in their future, but they can also invest in themselves and their skin health.
Your 30s is when you start to see the early signs of aging. The first effects of sun damage that most likely happened in your teenage years or in your 20s. Patients in their 30s start seeing fine lines, loss of volume in cheeks (which can make under eye changes appear more prominent). As well as heavier pigmentation from sun damage. Your skin’s repair system slows down. Skin can appear duller, and decreased collagen production means that your skin will appear less tight. So you may see early wrinkles and thinner skin especially under the eyes, where we can start to see the blood vessels beneath and then discoloration.
In addition to a core skincare routine of cleansing, moisturising, and sun protection, I would recommend adding a topical retinol (or an alternative like bakuchiol or a peptide-based serum) to help with fine lines and skin firmness. Adding an antioxidant in your 30’s is also something I can’t emphasise enough.
This is the time when I might also suggest a lot of patients in their 30s start laser therapy, like IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) or Photofacials, which can assist in the removal of discoloration. I would also recommend any treatments that encourage cellular turnover, such as chemical peels, microneedlingwhich is making small punctures in the surface of the skin to stimulate
the growth of new collagen. Radio frequency, which incorporates heat via (you guessed it) radio frequency devices to help induce new collagen and elastin production in the deeper layers of the skin. And of course, your 30s is most likely when you’ll start to see more prominent lines and wrinkles, so you can have injectables administered to help reduce their appearance.
And 40s?
Your 40s is when you really start to see major changes in the firmness of your skin. You’re dealing with loss of volume and elasticity (leading to skin that appears saggy), as well as more pronounced wrinkles and sun damage, which may lead to conditions like melasma. While you may start to invest in more aesthetic treatments, the most successful patients are the ones who mix clinic treatments with their knowledge of skincare. That is, they make lifestyle adjustments to help support the results from the treatments.
It’s no secret that your skin changes as you age. Whether you notice loss of elasticity or volume, a few fine lines here and there, or pigment that wasn’t there before, these changes can be a bit stressful as you try to navigate a brand-new skincare routine.
BE AGING FASTER THAN US?
Because your skin is going through so many changes in your 40s, you may need to incorporate two different kinds of cleansers - a gentle exfoliating cleanser and a mild lotion-like cleanser to accommodate your skin’s needs for both cell turnover and hydration. For ultimate moisture retention, I also recommend incorporating hyaluronic acid into your routine (can be used both day and night), as well as a rich night cream that contains glycerin, ceramides, and or fatty lipids to help encourage skin barrier repair.
Typically, dermatologists see more patients in their 40s coming in for treatments that help reduce signs of aging. Filler helps replace lost volume. Chemical peels can target melasma, sun damage, and uneven tone or texture. I would recommend treating your skin “from the bottom, up”, or rather, from the lowest layer of the skin to the top. While topical skincare is great for maintaining your skin’s overall health and appearance, if you want to actively work against signs of aging, you have to start to incorporate laser treatments that get underneath the surface of the skin.
And what about the dreaded post menopause age of 50 plus?
Post menopause, our bodies experience a hormone shift with declining levels of oestrogen and increased levels of androgens and this can affect the skin. Skin will be thinner and less elastic. Bone resorption occurs and this presents itself as loss of volume - especially in the middle of the face - as we age. Dryness is another major concern, and you may see acne you haven’t seen since your teenage years start to resurface due to these hormonal fluctuations.
Excess pigment and signs of sun damage (i.e. brown spots and photo aging) also become more prominent. While your 50s can seem like a daunting time, it is a milestone decade after allour main concern is making sure that clients, especially women, know that life is just beginning. Especially woman are empowered to know what their skin needs to invest in themselves and treatments to make them happy. In your 50s, you’ll be dealing with even more hormonal and overall skin changes, as well as overall skin changes that mainly happen because of your genetics. We recommend looking at yourself with kind eyes and to celebrate your best features. We always say we want to look good for our age. Healthy skin is happy skin and that will shine through.
I also treat patients with microneedling to help encourage the production of collagene. For the face, I recommend clinic treatments like lasers, microneedling, HIFU and chemical peels to encourage skin cell turnover and boost skin repair in a more controlled setting.
60s and beyond...
The main thing that I want patients in their 60s to know is that it’s never too late to start anti-aging treatments. Coming in to see us frequently will help you look your best over time. The main concern with patients in their 60s and beyond is lack of hydration and moisture retention.
The emphasis in our 60s shifts from skincare to primarily procedures and I recommend keeping skincare very simple; hydrating, and gentle, at this age focusing on procedures such as lasers that can be performed once or twice a year for improvement and maintenance.
The common theme we see with all our clients at Vale Laser Clinic, is that they want to look good for their age. We work with our bodies to harness the healing, rejuvenating power for healthy, youthful skin.
“Your 40s is when you really start to see major changes in the firmness of your skin. You’re dealing with loss of volume and elasticity (leading to skin that appears saggy), as well as more pronounced wrinkles and sun damage, which may lead to conditions like melasma.”
It’s not just about staying out of the sun and drinking two litres of water daily. No, here are a few notes on what happens to our skin as we age and what we should be doing about it.
PEAK PERFORMANCE In our 20s
Our twenties is the decade in which our skin usually looks its best. To keep it looking that way well into your 40s, adopt a good skin routine now and keep it.
This decade is about protecting the skin from sun damage, so always wear a cream or moisturiser of at least SPF 30. If you have skin conditions such as acne, now is the time to treat it to change its behaviour and be healthier. Having regular IllumiFacials will keep any pigmentation at bay as well as any broken veins. Now is also a time to introduce retinol in your moisturiser.
VALE LASER CLINIC
MIGHT NEED AN OIL CHANGE In our 30s
The skin produces less oil when we get into our thirties. That means you’ll start seeing a little dryness, fine lines, and creases at the eyelids.
It’s time to start exfoliating with products containing Lactic acid. An eye cream can help reduce puffiness and dark circles around the eyes. A hyaluronic acid serum can help with dehydration.
Now is also the time to start banking collagen. Our radio frequency Microneedling treatment can help stimulate collagen. The fine needles stimulate elastin production and cause new collagen to form.
The result is a new and smoother layer of skin. For best results, RF Microneedling treatments should be carried out at regular intervals, start with a course of three and then every six months or so.
When it comes to ensuring we have a proper routine and using suitable products well as treatment, it depends on what decade we’re in. Because every ten years or so, we need to reassess. Our skin changes as we age, and so should our products and routines.
“Now is also the time to start banking collagen. The radio frequency Microneedling treatment can help stimulate collagen. The fine needles stimulate elastin production and cause new collagen to form. The result is a new and smoother layer of skin.”
“Adopt a good skin routine now and keep it.”

APPLY THE BRAKES
SKIN AGE ACCELERATES In our 40s
This is the decade when sagging can begin. We lose elasticity in the skin, and it will become drier. Moisturisers should be more intense and contain ingredients such as omega fatty acids, peptides, and an increased amount of retinol.
It’s also worth getting your skin checked out as you go through the menopause years. That’s because the skin can become drier or more sensitive, and you may need to alter your care routine.
REGULAR SERVICING In our 50s and beyond
We’re looking to improve our skin and slow down ageing during these years. It’s never too late to introduce active skincare or a treatment to rejuvenate your skin. Dealing with any sun damage that is now showing.
Lifting and tightening your skin and refining your pores will all lead to your skin looking good for your age. And isn’t that we all want? To look good for our age.
For a personalised skin consultation and treatment plan, make an appointment with our expert skin team today. See our Vale Laser Clinic website or call 01446 750 880.
It’s now that we should be stepping up the number of RF Microneedling treatments. A High-IntensityFocused Ultrasound (HIFU) facial is recommended to combat sagging. This non-surgical antiageing treatment provides the benefits of a facelift without any nasty cutting. That’s because it’s non-invasive and works with intense heat on targeted cells.
Nonsurgical ultrasound treatments such as HIFU can:
n Tighten the skin on the neck
n Reduce the appearance of jowls
n Lift drooping eyelids or eyebrows
n Smooth wrinkles on the face
n Smooth and tighten chest skin.
“It’s now that we should be stepping up the number of RF Microneedling treatments. A HIFU facial is recommended to combat sagging.”

I don’t want to be a busy fool, or cut corners,” he says. “It was important to me to create a set of ground rules for myself.” And here they are:

BOXING CLEVER
Richard built his first recycling storage bench in early lockdown Feb 2020. “First test, Mrs Pike!” he says, Thankfully, it passed with glowing approval. “She loved it!” And, filled with confidence, and feeling pretty pleased with himself, Richard showed it to his neighbour, who also thought it was a great idea and promptly asked Richard if he would make one for him!
The rest as they say is history. Orders snowballed. Richard is now supplying recycling storage solutions across Wales and has developed a new flatpack which can be sent anywhere in the UK.
We ask Richard what his thought process was and what motivated him to come up with this unique product. “Recycling is so important to the environment, but I have to say the bags are difficult to manage; there are so many! My first thought was a plastic box. Being a larger gentleman, my thoughts turned to trying to find a stronger wooden container that could double as extra seating in our garden.”
“I have to say someone else invented a wooden box before me, but all I was doing was moving the problem of using the bags into a box which I would have to take out of the box to use, that’s when I came up with my design, lift the lid drop in the recycling, job done!”
Also, having dogs, Richard soon released that another problem could be solved: “No more picking up my recycling around the garden distributed by my dogs and the local seagulls. Stormy weather! Again, another issue solved, bags and caddies all safe from the wind and out of sight.”
Three years on Richard and his small team are producing ‘Recycling Storage Solutions’, bike sheds, log stores and garden furniture. “It’s been quite a journey,” he says. “Recycling our household waste properly makes a massive impact to our environment, reducing landfill and recycling waste, Recycling Storage Solutions helps you manage your recycling and make your life easier.” We’re pretty sure that journey has only just begun.

Delicious Destinations
Food is increasingly a huge part of travel, with many clients planning their entire vacation around food experiences - including what they will eat, cooking classes and visits to local wineries, farms and markets as well as photo oportunities. 81% of respondents agree that trying local foods and cuisines is the part of traveling they look forward to the most with nearly half (47%) of Gen Z and Millennials (1981-2012) saying they have planned an entire trip around visiting a specific bar or restaurant.
The Wellbeing Wave
Restorative vacations are also on the rise, as travellers emphasize self-care or even indulgence. 73% of survey respondents are planning vacations to better their mental, physical and emotional health this year with hotels everywhere adding spas in response to the strong demand.
This was confirmed by a Skyscanner poll which suggested 70% are expecting to spend the same or more. An overwhelming majority apparently care more about creating a travel experience that meets their expectations than the cost. Almost 4 in 5 believe that travel is an important budget priority while 84% of Millennials (born after 1981) and Gen Z would rather take a dream vacation than purchase a new luxury item.
Pam Thornton, owner of four travel agencies in the Vale, remarked, “Generally the over 40s are looking for higher-end and longer durations than pre-Covid, while younger customers are more focused on making multiple short trips. All customers are keen to have personalised itineraries which take their passions and ambitions into account. This could include their hobbies or hard to get dinner reservations or even the perfect video for Instagram.”
Within the overall picture there are four key factors identified as driving global travel behaviour:
Travelling Off the Beaten Track
85% of respondents want to discover less well-known destinations-hidden gems-preferably where they can experience the local culture and help support local communities.
The Rise of “Set-Jetting”
Social media and pop culture is behind the decisions of younger travellers determining where they go and what to do when they get there.
75% of those surveyed identified social media as well as TV shows and movies as inspiring them to visit a specific destination be it Paris,Rome or Yellowstone. Then there are bragging rights. More than a third of all Brits admit to going somewhere with the specific intention of boasting about it.
We asked Pam what advice she has for travellers. “Prices, especially of flights, have gone up but don’t delay plans for 2023. There has been an exceptionally strong start to bookings with many operators already reporting they are at or close to capacity. 88% of EasyJet Holidays for the summer were sold by the end of March. Unusual destinations often have limited flight options so better value can be found on competitive routes where fares have even dropped, e.g. to many Spanish destinations. Ex-UK cruises where flights and flight prices are not an issue also offer good value.
Travel is back. More than half (52%) of the respondents in a recent, large travel survey* say they plan to take more trips this year than last, and 50% plan to increase their budget.
Crewe Hall is impressive. Seriously impressive. Its imposing exterior is made all the more so by the arrow straight drive that leads up to it. You might struggle for superlatives. But just wait until you get inside.
CREWE H ALL
When you do, your jaw may hit the floor. Stunning would be an appropriate description. And you wouldn’t be alone. I imagine anyone who’s walked through its doors has experienced the same over the centuries.
You’ll be following in the footsteps of royalty if that’s any reassurance. Set in eight acres of stunning grounds in the serene Cheshire countryside, this lavishly decorated historic country pile dates back to the 17th century when it was rebuilt 1615 by Sir Randolph Crewe. Its character heavily influenced by the Flemish, Italian and other foreign craftsmen employed in the restoration.
Since then, it’s survived a fire and even hosted the wartime military - as well as a monarch or two! In 1955 Her Majesty the Queen, together with the Duke of Edinburgh, visited Crewe Hall in her capacity as Duke of Lancaster, whilst touring the Duchy Estates in Cheshire.
With its rich heritage Crewe Hall is well worth a wander - inside and out. It’s rich in history and we guarantee you will be blown away by the fabulous décor - it would be an understatement to say it has the wow factor. On arrival, we spent at least twenty minutes wandering around reception, the Hall of Pillars and into the chapel - and there’s much more to see.
Today Crewe Hall has a contemporary side too with a modern wing comprising of stylish rooms, dining and meeting areas. So very often the clash of old and new doesn’t work, but here the The QHotels Collection team manage it sensitively. Our room was understated and contemporary and certainly didn’t feel out of place.
It’s conveniently located if you wish to visit Chester, Liverpool or Manchester - all are an easy drive away, but you’ll be forgiven for wishing to stay closer to home. It really is magnificent. If you do, there’s a luxurious spa, perfect for pampering, and you can take afternoon tea in the oak-panelled Sheridan Lounge.
Our stay at Crewe Hall was brief but it has certainly left a lasting impression. We had huge grins on our faces as we headed down its long drive. Quite appropriate really. We were in Cheshire after all.

Ready for an adventure? Slaley Hall is a former hunting lodge in the beautiful Northumberland countryside surrounded by unspoilt moorland and dense forests teeming with local wildlife.
SLALEY H ALL
Spread over 1,000 acres the sprawling estate has a wealth of history dating back to Edwardian times. Originally called Bog Hall Farm, it was later bought by Major Charles Hunting and then the Priestman family, who the two award winning championship golf courses are named after. We’re not golfers, but if you are, you’ll absolutely love it here.
The mansion house played a vital role in World War Two, serving as a hospital, and was eventually turned into a hotel in 1980. Over the years, it’s hosted some illustrious guests. The England football team have trained here for matches in the North East, and the hall has been filled with the sounds of Elton John and Madonna.
Slaley Hall manages to do everything particularly well. We were on an overnight stay, but there were families, girly groups, businesspeople, golfing parties and couples of all ages checking in. It has a wide clientele and seems to morph effortlessly into whatever is required. Quite a feat! We were impressed to say the least. Our room was spacious and stylish with a dual aspect view over one of the golf courses.
Part of The QHotels Collection, its facilities are equally impressive. There’s an activity centre with kids quad biking, Segway safari, archery, off-road driving, clay-pigeon shooting, axe throwing and more; plus an onsite spa, pool, health club and choice of restaurants. The food was excellent. Both breakfast and our evening meal were superb.
When the sun is shining, you can enjoy a south-facing terrace for al fresco food and drinks. The views are pretty good.
The countryside around Slaley Hall is absolutely breath-taking. We’ve never seen so much wildlife. There were pheasants and rabbits everywhere. Frolicking spring lambs helped paint the perfect picture. The drive in was spectacular – rolling hills, forestry punctuated by rivers and streams. Our own county is pretty, but this was pretty on steroids. Close to historic Hadrian’s Wall and scenic Northumberland coast, it’s a beautiful part of the world and Slaley Hall is the perfect location to explore it.
Dog Friendly
Slaley Hall is dog friendly too. So, if the thought of leaving your furry ones at home is too much to bear, worry not. Just call the team and they’ll look after you.
“When the sun is shining, you can enjoy a south-facing terrace for al fresco food and drinks.”
“To the left of the main house is a 18th century courtyard which is home to several rooms and four beautiful spacious suites.”
York is rich in history. You could spend two weeks here and still only scratch the surface – we had three days and two nights and Middlethorpe Hall seemed to be the perfect base.
M IDDLETHORPE H ALL
Thirty-five years have passed since I was last in York, so the return had to be special. York and its surrounding areas have plenty of beautiful country house hotels to choose from, but Middlethorpe’s charm leapt off its website, and it was perfectly located, literally minutes from York city centre and, because of its position next to the racecourse, it felt like it was in the countryside. We liked that.
Middlethorpe Hall is “a perfect William and Mary country house built in 1699-1701 of beautifully laid mellow red brick with limestone dressing and panelled interiors of excellent joinery.” It was built for Thomas Barlow, a prosperous master cutler (a person that sells or makes cutlery) who bought the Middlethorpe estate in 1698 as a bid to establish himself as a country gentleman. By all accounts it worked.
Women have also made their mark on Middlethorpe. It was once the home of the famous diarist, Lady Mary Wortley Montagu (1689-1762), one of the most remarkable women of the 18th century, not least due to her campaigning for the introduction of smallpox inoculation, but also as a writer and poet.
It was also the family home of Fanny Rollo Wilkinson (1855-1951), who was the first woman professional landscape gardener in England and paved the way for women to enter the profession, which until then had been a strictly male preserve. She may well have been inspired by its beautiful grounds.
Middlethorpe is influenced indirectly by the architecture of Sir Christopher Wren, especially his Hampton Court of the 1690s with its horizontal skyline and its pattern of red brick, white sash windows and stone quoins and window surrounds; all features taken up at Middlethorpe.
“Set in twenty acres of its own gardens it strikes quite a pose.”
As you drive up, it has a stately but sturdy stance – no nonsense, very Yorkshire. Set in twenty acres of its own gardens it strikes quite a pose. To the left of the main house is a 18th century courtyard which is home to several rooms and four beautiful spacious suites with names connected to the history of Middlethorpe; The Colonel Wilkinson, Sir Henry Thompson, Paget and ours, the Sir Francis Terry Suite. All have a comfortable sitting room and separate bedroom with king-size double bed (that can be twinned), and are furnished with antiques and fine prints, plus all the usual modern accompaniments. The suites have views over the gardens or the courtyard.
Our suite was tastefully decorated, and the two bathrooms (one ensuite) featured Penhaligon Quercus toiletries. Free WiFi access is also provided. One of the details we particularly loved was the staff attire - green waistcoats, pressed trousers, cotton shirts and ties. Very smart indeed.
On our first evening we had booked dinner and what an excellent meal. The food, the presentation, the dining room, the service - all perfect.
We weren’t surprised to hear that nonresidents regularly dine here. Breakfast is also particularly popular with discerning locals too.
We were hoping to visit York Minster prior to our arrival at Middlethorpe but hadn’t banked on our King putting in an appearance the following day. Understandably, the preparations for the visit trumped our “We’re from Wales and we’d like to look around”. No worries, we took ourselves off to Durham Cathedral instead and we weren’t disappointed. A brilliant experience made all the more enjoyable by, refreshingly, no admission fee and the good fortune of meeting Aidan Brewer, a charming young man full of knowledge and a real passion for the cathedral’s history. We could have listened to him for hours - a real asset to the organisation.
Afterwards, we found a wonderful little tearoom called Cafédral. A real gem. Good coffee and it would have been rude not to try their fresh cream scones which were delicious. If you’re in Durham, we highly recommend it.
The following day, after a superb Middlethorpe breakfast (we both chose smoked haddock and poached eggsincredibly good), we headed for Whitby, the famous working fishing port on the east coast. It was raining on arrival but the cloud soon broke and we enjoyed a few hours walking its streets and mooching around the harbour.
I had hoped to visit Saltwick Bay, Sandsend Beach and Port Mulgrave to do a spot of fossil hunting but, alas, time got away from us. I follow the lads at Yorkshire Fossils on YouTube. Perhaps next time.
After a relaxed exploratory drive around the local villages, we returned to the hotel having booked ourselves afternoon tea. We weren’t disappointed. Yet again Middlethorpe surpassed themselves – we sat in a gorgeous sitting room with a coal fire gently glowing in the hearth. The ambience combined with tasty sandwiches, handmade scrummy cakes and beautiful bone China ensured this afternoon tea was a particularly special one.
After tea, Jennifer took herself off to the spa for an hour of rest and relaxation. The Health & Fitness Spa, in a subtly extended pair of Edwardian cottages opposite the hotel provides a large swimming pool, spa bath, steam room, sauna, three beauty salons and Club Room where meals and drinks can be served. On this occasion, a quick dip followed by a sauna was the order of the day.
Later in the evening, we headed for the Vue cinema in York. John Wick 4 was showing and, having enjoyed the previous three, we thought we’d catch it while we could. While enjoyable, and beautifully shot, it lacked any real narrative or substance, unlike Middlethorpe which had perfect scores across the board.
The following morning, we opted for the full English, Middlethorpe style, and were not disappointed. With full tummies, we checked out and headed for York centre determined to have a few hours in the Good Friday morning sunshine.
A quick visit to the Minster (the outside anyway) and then a lovely, leisurely walk around the city walls to bring our great North run to a close. We’d driven 900 miles over five days and had enjoyed every moment, even the drizzly ones.
To sum up, everything about Middlethorpe Hall is quality. Is it five stars? I hadn’t even checked. It certainly felt like five stars to us.
Our foodie friends are always recommending new places to eat and recently JT’s at the Abergwaun Hotel in Fishguard was enthusiastically brought to our attention.
A BERGWAUN HOTEL
We fancied a couple of nights away but not too far and we like West Wales. Upon discovering that JT’s was a hotel restaurant we booked ourselves in. I’m not sure why when we mention Fishguard people seem to turn their noses up. We quite like Fishguard and especially lower Fishguard which is incredibly pretty. We’d visited the town several times over the years but never actually stayed there.
As a location, Fishguard is perfect for exploring coastal Pembrokeshire. Down the coast is Porthgain and Abereiddy Beach (famous for its Blue Lagoon). A little further southwest you’ll find the cathedral city of St Davids. All firm favourites with us. Up the coast towards Cardigan, there’s the lovely little village of Newport (great butchers there). Beyond Cardigan you’ll find Aberporth and Tresaith (always a favourite stop). You can’t beat a glass of wine overlooking the beach. On this particular Thursday, there wasn’t a cloud in the sky - t-shirt weather in April! One of those rare days.
We also headed inland on that day to Cenarth Falls and took ourselves for a walk up the river. Absolute bliss, and very relaxing. A lovely elderly chap named Stan runs the carpark. He must be in his nineties. A real character.
Usually we’d talk more about our travels but, on this break, the 200-yearold Abergwaun Hotel has to take centre stage. As you drive up, its appearance is quite understated, with no real clue to the culinary magic that is being created inside. Our room was spotlessly clean with the most amazing bed (it seemed wider than its length), we could have easily slept sideways. It’s tastefully decorated and boasts a cool, compact bathroom but with a large walk-in shower (which totally delivered on its promise). We thoroughly enjoyed our morning showers before what were, on both occasions, superb breakfasts.
Our hosts, a young couple, Daniel Jones and Lois Thomas (the J and T of the logo), had taken on the hotel in 2020, three years after the initial setup of JT’s elsewhere in the town. It is now effectively fully refurbished but there is a second phase which is quietly taking shape in the background. When we checked in, we were outside service, so they had a little time to chat. Dan has travelled all over the world and cooked with the best, including Stephen Terry here in Wales (he still ‘chefs’ several times a year and had recently returned from a corporate gig in France – he’s in demand). But the couple were determined to create something special in their hometown, and they most certainly have. They’ve already won plenty of awards (check out the website) and, recently, Daniel won the Salon Culinaire Pub Chef Of The Year 2023.
If Dan is the passionate ‘superman’ chef in the kitchen, Lois is his universal balance both professionally and personally (they’ve been together for ten years and are getting married in June). She has a calm, nurturing and gentle personality. Just being around her encourages you to relax - and we did. I suggest that none of what they have achieved has come easy to them, and Dan is particularly candid in his reply. He openly admits that there have been times in his career, particularly in London, where the pressures were almost overwhelming. We also discover he’s boxed, and at high level too, which explains the focus and emotional resilience. He doesn’t anymore. He had to make a choice, boxing of cooking, and cooking won on points.
For mains Jennifer unsurprisingly chose the Welsh Beef Rib-Eye and I joined her on the meaty Welsh journey with the Roast Lamb Rump (cauliflower “sheeps cheese”, spring greens and wild garlic mash). We decided to share instantly and both of us agreed that what we were experiencing was a masterclass. The Rib-eye was hard to put into words. It was for want of a better word, perfect. The lamb was beautiful, and the spring greens and garlic mash was something we wished wouldn’t come to an end. Everything was divine. Both of us looked at each other and, almost said at the same time: “Sunday lunch!” We knew we must experience that at some point.
Lois is no stranger to fitness either being an accomplished cross-trainer. The more we talk, the more we really like this couple. They are passionate and determined and genuinely intent on supplying the best possible experience for guests. Their attitude has clearly influenced the rest of their young team who are a credit to them.
The final knockouts came in the form of Roast Pineapple Roulade (passion fruit curd, passion fruit and champagne sorbet), and Set Amaretto Custard (poached fruit and cherry sorbet). Both were unbelievably good, and when you consider they were created in an open kitchen barely large enough to accommodate three people, it’s even more impressive.
This meal was hard to top but we soon discovered that the following evening’s menu also had a five coarse tasting option. Whatever plans we had to eat elsewhere were now out of the window. We would have to try it.
If you do fancy a weekend in West Wales, Fishguard should be on your radar. We can highly recommend the Abergwaun Hotel. It rates itself four stars but it’s a definite five in our eyes. Daniel, Lois and the team are brilliant, and we know they’re going to go from strength to strength. We’ll certainly be joining them on their journey from time to time.
We had booked ourselves in for dinner on the first evening thinking we could try somewhere else on the following night. Little did we know, those plans would soon be out for the count. We ordered a few drinks (a stunning Malbec) and what followed was a seemingly effortless display of top-level cooking. Our starters were full of flavour. JT’s Famous Pork Fries & Naughty Saws (sauce), and Leek Wrapped Cod Loin (crushed pea and Caesar dressed salad).

DON’T BE A DOG WITH A BONE
Arthur the Black Labrador at Vale Solicitors, and his assistant Paddington, understand loyalty and the importance of reconciliation after the occasional scrap. They are the best of friends but sometimes there can be issues over a stick, a squeaky toy, or the last treat in the jar. They understand the challenges facing a dog with a bone.
In our human lives difficulties can arise in marriages, partnerships, business relations and between neighbours. Reconciliation can sometimes be difficult, and problems can get worse if the talking stops and the barking and growling begins.
If you cannot talk to one another, then an early conversation with an experienced and understanding Solicitor can help you find a way forward. Getting the right advice may help you to talk again.
Your problems may be solvable quickly or you may need a plan of action to resolve matters over a period of time.
Court Proceedings can be hugely expensive and time consuming and should be the last resort in any dispute. Where possible we will always seek a proper solution for you whether by negotiation or mediation.
Vale Solicitors have good and very experienced Solicitors. Jeff Lloyd and Jon Hewitson have been guiding people through matrimonial and childcare problems for decades. Our associate Solicitor Denisa Buciuta is building a fine reputation as a family lawyer.
We are accredited by the Law Society as members of the Family Law Panel: the recognised quality standard for Family Law Practitioners. We also hold a contract with the Legal Services Commission to provide legal aid in Family matters.
