Passionate about The Vale of Glamorgan

We are a small independent publisher. We are not a large publishing group pretending to be home grown. Vale Life magazine is written, designed and produced in the Vale of Glamorgan for the people of the Vale of Glamorgan.

Our philosophy

We are committed to quality. This quote by William Foster pretty much sums up our thinking: “Quality is never an accident; it is always the result of high intention, sincere effort, intelligent direction and skillful execution; it represents the wise choice of many alternatives.”

Caveat emptor

Advertisers supply their own copy or artwork, and therefore Vale Life cannot accept any responsibility for disputes between advertisers and their customers. Caveat emptor - let the buyer beware.

Important you read this

We have made every effort to ensure that all information contained in Vale Life or on www.valelife.co.uk (or our social media streams) is correct and accurate. However, we accept no responsibility for any errors or omissions and can offer no compensation should we get it wrong. Please note that the opinions, thoughts, views or ideas expressed in articles contained in Vale Life are strictly those of the authors.

We take breach of copyright and theft of intellectual property extremely seriously and will sue at the drop of a croissant. You have been warned (nicely); ignorance is no excuse.

Subscriptions

Apologies, we are not accepting subscriptions at present. However, you can reserve a copy with some of our outlets across the Vale or read articles on www.valelife.co.uk

Missed the last issue?

We hold a small number of each issue in stock so if you do need a pristine copy, please telephone us or email jennifer@goodlifepublishing.co.uk. Hopefully we’ll have the issue you want (but we cannot guarantee it). Each back issue costs £5 including postage and packing.

Yes it’s free. Priceless actually!

Vale Life is distributed free through a wide variety of outlets across Vale of Glamorgan and beyond and is given away free of charge on the understanding that we are happy for it to be lent, passed on, given to friends and generally read until it falls apart. At which point, you can recycle it and we’d be delighted if you did.

Green is good

The pulp used in the production of the paper Vale Life is printed on is sourced from sustainably managed Scandinavian tree farms and utilises an elementary chlorine-free bleaching process.

We’re very sociable!

We’re on the web!

WELCOME

Let’s be fair, it’s been pretty miserable, but there’s still a lot to smile about and, hopefully, by the time you’re reading this latest edition of Vale Life, the sun will have put in an appearance in August (because it didn’t much in July!).

We know we harp on about supporting local businesses at any time of the year, but somehow this summer it seems even more appropriate to spend our cash locally. Whether it’s in your local café, boutique, gift shop, pub or restaurant, they’re all part of our community.

Seriously, if we don’t spend our hard earned cash at our local high street, businesses then we’ll lose them and our high street shops will be boarded up

Guess what happens next? Your town or village becomes a less desirable place to live in, house prices plummet, no local job opportunities and we will all be left wondering how and when it all went wrong. It’s just a fact.

So, this summer, wet or dry, let’s embrace local, support our shops, and turn a gloomy day into an opportunity for laughter, warmth, unforgettable experiences and helping our cherished high streets to not only survive but thrive once again!

Until next time...

Award-winning Hensol Castle Distillery launches first rum line, Judge Jenkins, on World Rum Day.

GIN RUMMY

Hensol Castle Distillery website. Judge David Jenkins, after which the new rum is named, was the grandson of Richard Jenkins, who built and resided in Hensol Castle in the late 17th century with his family. Born at Hensol in 1582 and following in the fervent footsteps of his royalist grandfather and father, the Judge was a man of great force and character, gaining the nicknames “Heart of Oak” and “the pillar of the law” in his time.

His story sees him described as a scholar, a gentleman, a man of honour and of discerning taste. His story is mired in revolution and revolt, of imprisonment and hope and it is in the spirit of those things that Hensol Castle Distillery decided to create the Judge Jenkins rums to celebrate his life and all that he accomplished.

Chris Leeke, Managing Director, said, “Judge Jenkins is woven into the tapestry of Hensol Castle’s history and what better way to honour the legend himself than by creating a fiery spirit with his namesake.

The UK’s only distillery located within a castle has launched its first line of rum, named after a former resident of the castle itself. Awardwinning Hensol Castle Distillery, based in Wales, expanded its range outside the gin market, launching two flavours of ‘Judge Jenkins’ rum on World Rum Day (8th July 2023).

After the continued success of its award-winning gins, Hensol Castle Distillery is entering the rum market with the launch of its new Judge Jenkins range, with two flavours available: Spiced Rum (40% ABV) and Maraschino Cherry Spiced Rum (37.5% ABV). The two new bottles will be available to purchase direct from the

Hensol Castle Distillery has the capacity to bottle up to five+ million bottles of spirits per annum. In the relatively short time since the distillery launched in 2019, its own three Hensol Castle gins have won numerous gold medals, including Best in Country at this year’s World Gin Awards plus an additional 15 gold medals won for contract bottling clients in 2023.

JRC JEWELLERY A COWBRIDGE GEM

Jonathan and Rowena Mahoney’s jewellery shop has been in Cowbridge for eleven years. This father and daughter run family business started back in the 1960s in Merthyr Market.

Since then, it has grown steadily and earned an excellent reputation for great service and excellent quality jewellery. No surprise that it has clients regularly visiting from hundreds of miles away. Thankfully, living in Rhoose, we didn’t have to travel quite so far to have a catch up with Rowena.

Why the move to the new premises?

Simply, for more space, which has hopefully created a nicer ambience for our customers. We felt we needed more display room, and we wanted to offer a more luxurious, personalised service in a boutique style, with a bespoke consultation area allowing a little more privacy for clients. The design of the interior makes the best use of the space, and so far, everyone likes what we’ve created.

Has the offering changed at all?

Not in product terms, because we still offer gemstones, and a wide range of natural diamonds, including pieces with certified diamonds.

Having said that, we have a new bridal range that showcases Brown & Newirth engagement and wedding bands, which come with a year’s insurance and a lifetime guarantee, and additionally a stunning selection of eternity rings.

What do you do that sets you apart?

We offer high quality, affordable jewellery and we strive to go the extra mile for our customers. I genuinely believe that it’s because of this, customers return time and time again.

6
“The design of the interior makes the best use of the space, and everyone seems to like what we’ve created.”

JRC Jewellery has been a little jewel on Cowbridge’s high street for over a decade. But, as they say about diamonds, a little bigger is always better, so they have recently opened a larger retail space just down the road.

Photos courtesy of Just CTEC Media

How has the new shop been received?

Customers seem genuinely impressed when they first see our new shop and they keep telling us how much they love it. I secretly wish we’d done it sooner, but we had to find the right premises, and this is perfect, and still close to where we used to be. Other businesses have congratulated us on the move, and we hope we are demonstrating our commitment to Cowbridge and the Vale. We love the town. Our future is here.

What brands do you offer?

A number of varied brands and we’re very careful who we select. We’re primarily known for Georg Jensen, who offer classic silver jewellery; Ti Sento, a modern, fashionable brand using seasonal stones and focusing on colours; and Deakin and Francis who provide luxury, solid silver cufflinks and bespoke signet rings in a choice of metals.

What do you think makes JRC special?

I think it’s our personal approach and knowledge of the industry. We really try to offer great service and make the process of choosing and buying an enjoyable experience. We’re mindful of the current climate and are seeing more repairs and remodelling - even jewellery is becoming more sustainable.

How does the bespoke process work?

We can, of course, design a piece from scratch, but alternatively a client could bring in an existing piece of jewellery to be reworked. They might have their own ideas or come in with screenshots from say Pinterest or Instagram, or something they’ve seen in a magazine. and by combining their own and our ideas, we design something which is achievable, using CAD, which is then shown to the client together with an estimate of cost.

We don’t charge a consultation fee, some do, and it’s so important for us to get it right. When we’re reworking a piece of preloved jewellery, we fully appreciate the tremendous sentimental value to the owner, so it has to be done with sensitivity and care.

The last five years has been a roller coaster for everyone. How do you see the next five years?

After such a busy year getting the new shop exactly as we want it, and re-establishing ourselves in our new premises, we want to ensure that we look after our existing and new clients and build on the reputation we have. We will, of course, strive to ensure that we are offering the very best service to our customers. We are always on the lookout for potential new brands, and we make sure we’re in touch and up to date with what’s going on in the jewellery world.

What do you love about what you do? Well, we really love jewellery. We also love Cowbridge and the people who live here or visit our town. We enjoy chatting to people, and we hope that we help to bring joy to our customers’ day. Jewellery brings pleasure and our pieces are often a gift (even if it’s to oneself), and we know that someone is going to be delighted when they receive it.

You’ve won awards. Can you tell us a little about those?

We were awarded ‘Inspiring Independent Retail Jeweller for Wales and Southwest 2023’. We were nominated last year so it’s exciting to win this time. We’re an official brand ambassador for Ti Sento. They’re a very discerning brand so it’s lovely to think they approve of us. I was also recognised as one of the Retail Jewellers Rising Stars Under 30 for 2023.

“We love Cowbridge and the people who live here or visit us.”

When Lynda and Justine opened The Tap End in Pontyclun, their ethos was to create the most beautiful bathrooms and nurture design talent. Winning a string of awards along the way has been a lovely bonus.

T HE TAP END AWARD-WINNING CREATIVITY

Zoe Curtis has worked at The Tap End since it opened five years ago. She has recently been winning awards for her work so we thought we’d have a catch up to find out more.

What is your background in the industry?

My degree is in Fashion, but after I graduated, I made the transition from fashion to interiors where I worked on whole home design for about five or six years before joining The Tap End where I now do high end bathroom design.

What qualifications do you hold?

Degree in Fashion design and promotion from London.

What made you want to work at The Tap End?

The team is very passionate. I love that by working there I have access to unique brands and high-end products which make designing bathrooms so enjoyable for me as a designer! We have been together for many years now, so the whole team knows each other really well.

Do you live locally?

I live in Cardiff, with my husband and two little girls.

What’s it like working with the owners and the Tap End team?

I had prior experience working with Lynda and Justine so I knew we would all work well together. Lynda and Justine are the owners, but they work in the business as well, so they are there every day which is nice as we work well as a team. Everyone knows a bit about everyone’s projects, so we can assist each other and clients which makes the process very smooth. There are six of us in the showroom, so there is always someone here to help clients.

10
“The team is a very passionate team and I love working with them.”

Do you each have your own individual projects, or do you work as a team on each one?

We all have our own projects, so each designer has their own clientseveryone helps each other though, it is a very unique working environment, very supportive and helpful towards each other which is why it is such a nice place to work.

How does the process work?

Do clients bring in cut outs from magazines? Do they have their own ideas?

Sometimes. They may have seen something they like in a magazine. We do an initial consultation where we talk through/show people our process, then we allocate each client to a designer that suits their needs best. That designer then takes ownership of the project and will do the presentation with the client. We find out what the client wants to achieve, their dreams for the space, their likes and dislikes and ask if they have any inspiration images from magazines or online. That helps to inform the design process and make the process as smooth as possible.

What brands do you especially like to work with?

We have several mid to high-end brands that we work with, for us quality is key. A Swiss brand that we particularly like is Laufen, and we favour AXOR for quality brassware. Schluter is our go to for waterproofing and Bette for steel enamel products such as baths and shower trays. Each of these brands we have a long-standing relationship with, and the aftercare is exceptional, which in turn means we can give clients peace of mind and longevity for their new room. These brands are on the higher end of the scale, in addition we also have midrange brands, so we have something for everyone. When it comes to tiles we love CaPietra for their colours and patterns!

Do you have your own team of experienced fitters?

Yes, we have a few ways in which we can provide a fitter. We have a number of recommended fitters, these are tried and tested local fitters who we recommend based on previous client satisfaction. We also have employed fitters from our own installation team that is headed up by Jordan who has been in the industry since he was eighteen.

How long does a project take to complete (from initial consult to fit)? From the initial contact consultation to presentation, we would say to allow between two to four weeks depending on our schedule. Our fitters are very good, so they are often booked up for a few months in advance, we see this as a good sign though as anyone who is available immediately probably isn’t getting positive referrals and keeping busy! From rip out to completion a typical bathroom with some boxing, design led features and ambient lighting etc can be around three weeks.

You have recently won an award, please tell me more about this... Yes, the win was such a thrill. The KBB awards are a prestigious national award for our industry. This is as good as it gets and to win was a surprise but also, I had worked really hard on that particular design and layout so it was so nice for that to be recognised by the industry and my peers. I was given the award by Joel Dommett the comedian and the whole team were there to see me collect the award. It is now proudly on display at the showroom.

Was that a prestigious award in the industry?

Yes, this particular award has a set of industry judges so you have to do a presentation on your work which they judge – in the past judges have been TV personalities like Linda Barker, magazine editors, famous interior designers etc so the presentation process can be quite nerve-racking!

What did it mean to you personally to win the award?

What makes working with The Tap End special?

I would say our experience in the industry, and our passion for giving clients something unique and better than they would have been able to achieve doing it on their own. We are constantly keeping up to date with the latest technology, products and ranges available to us, we have design and product training regularly, so we are always pushing the boundaries. Year on year we have been nominated for national design awards, most recently I won Bathroom Designer of the year 2023 and also, we won Home & Interiors business of the year 2023 for the Cardiff and surrounding areas.

In my career I have won this award twice, this is an amazing accolade, and especially rewarding this year as we were the only Welsh company to be represented from the bathroom sector – all of the other finalists were not from Wales so it was nice to take home the win.

Was there a ceremony? If so, where was it held and when?

The ceremony is always a big deal, they go all out and have comedian presenters, celeb DJs, entertainment and year on year they seem to get bigger and better!

12
“I was given the award by Joel Dommett.”

What did it mean for The Tap End for one of its team to win the award?

This year the whole team were there including our installation team so to feel the love and support from everyone just made the experience so much more rewarding. Daniella my colleague was also a finalist in a separate category so the cheers for both of us were so loud! We were sat with friends from the industry and together we all had such an amazing time.

Are there any plans for The Tap End in the next five years?

We have been working on a new venture for quite some time which will hopefully be coming to fruition in the next few months, we are opening a separate tile showroom for tiles for the whole home. We will have ranges for inside, outside and everywhere and anywhere that a tile would be a good finish!

What are the hopes and dreams for The Tap End?

We are here for the long term, and we plan to keep improving – we hope that more award wins will be in the pipeline – we are growing our employed installation side so we can fit in more bathrooms per year and we cannot wait to open our new dedicated tile showroom in the coming months.

Lynda and Justine love this business, and after working so hard on it and in it for the past six years it has been amazing to see it go from strength to strength. We all have the same hopes and dreams for the company, and that is to be the best in our area for mid to high end bathroom design and supply.

We hope to continue building such good relationships with our clients and produce work that we are proud of.

TESTIMONIALS What customers say

Fabulous team and design service from start to finish. Justine could not have been more helpful with queries about the design and products. Customer after care was second to none. Highly professional customer focus business. We cannot recommend enough.

Mr and Mrs West, Radyr

We had such a great experience with the Tap End - once we sent inspiration pictures and measurements, Jo was our designer and the layout she came up with was something we hadn’t thought could work, and all the main design elements I was looking for were incorporated into a really beautiful design.

When we met with her in the store, we were able to see samples of the products which helped with imagining how it would look and we made practically no changes to the design as it fitted what we wanted so well. When it came to fitting, we used a Tap End affiliated fitter - we were blown away by Sam’s work, he really cared about the end result and did a meticulous job. We’re so pleased with our bathroom!

We love Llantwit Major!

Llantwit Major is, in our humble opinion, pretty special. We take long walks along the coast theresometimes heading east to Rhoose, sometimes west to St Donats. We love the beach with its striking cliffs, and the town centre because it’s jam-packed with history.

If you haven’t visited St Illtud’s Church, you really should, it’s rather beautiful and is truly historically important. A wander around the town reveals several Blue Plaques.

For the Jurassic Park fans among you, the beach has one of the finest sites in Wales for Jurassic fossils, including corals, giant brachiopods, gastropods and the bones of Ichthyosaurus.

Bordered by beautiful rolling countryside, ‘Llantwit’ enjoys a real feeling of community. It has a railway station and good transport links. At its heart is the Poundfield Shopping Centre which has a wide selection of shops complementing those along Boverton Road.

Thankfully, Llantwit still has many indie businesses which create “a pleasurable visitor experience”. It must be true as the town is popular with tourists in the warmer seasons.

Resolving Legal Issues in Llantwit Major: “We tend not to recommend violence and murder,” says Michael Morgan.

T HE L AB R EPORT

Vale Solicitors has been in Llantwit Major for over fifty years. Our former senior partner the late Mr Dewi Evans is still fondly remembered by his many local friends and clients as a fine Lawyer and as a former Mayor of Llantwit Major.

Office Labrador Arthur and his assistant Paddington certainly appreciate the pleasures of working in Llantwit Major: dog friendly pubs, Puppuccinos from Piccolo Blu and frequent walks to the Beach Cafe.

Arthur is always on paw to help Jo Sloper our Chief Conveyancer in Llantwit. Jo maintains the highest standards to earn accreditation by the Law Society’s Quality Conveyancing Scheme. She assists clients through the sometimes complex process of buying and selling homes and is frequently recommended by grateful clients and estate agents. Her most satisfying job lately has been buying a new home for herself and fiancé Michael with space for the other loves of her life - her prizewinning horses.

Arthur says: “At Vale Solicitors we offer a full range of legal services for the good people of Llantwit Major and throughout the Vale. Whatever your problem, give us a call but don’t forget the dog treats.”

We can also save you time and expense involved in the preparation of Wills and Powers of Attorney usually having everything ready for you to sign in one meeting.

If you live in Llantwit Major or the Vale and find it difficult to get to our office, we will come to you at no additional cost. Home visits have always been part of our service - in the 19th Century our founder Mr Thomas Rees, Solicitor would ride out to see his clients. These days we tend to walk or hop in the car.

We don’t follow the example of all previous lawyers in Llantwit Major. In the 16th Century Edmund Vann did well enough from his legal practice to build Old Place in Llantwit Major - now beautifully restored as a home again. At the other end of town, Boverton Place was the home of Roger Seys the Attorney General of all Wales. There seems to have been some friction between these two lawyers. Edward Vann was fined over £1,000 at the Court of Star Chamber for his part in an affray in the centre of Llantwit on a Sunday after church when he led an attack on the Seys family. It would seem that Mr Vann and his family were not the most peaceful of people with tales of violence and even suspicion of murder.

“We tend not to recommend violence and murder to resolve disputes these days,” advises current Senior Partner Michael Morgan, “always try Mediation first.” Michael is accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors as an Evaluative Civil and Commercial Mediator.

Lynnette Welsh has an enviable reputation for the high standard of hairdressing that she and her team provides. Combine great service with a very chic, art adorned salon and you have a recipe for success.

T HE C UTTING ROOM

Originally based across the road from where the current salon is, Lynne knew she needed more space, so moved to a larger premises at the end of March 2022.

Lynne’s team include Sunette Bryan and Michelle Daw, who are both fantastic, experienced stylists that she has worked with before, and is now loving working with them again.

Jodie Porthouse has worked with Lynne for four years and has recently come back from maternity leave. Jodie is a much-loved stylist and her clients have welcomed her back with open arms.

Jess Ringstead is Lynne’s most recent employee and is an absolutely fabulous salon co-ordinator.

The Hair Salon uses Goldwell products which are tried and tested products used in the finest salons for many years. The salon also uses Wella Koleston Perfect Me, Colour Touch and Elumen by Goldwell allows them lots

“There is also some eclectic music playing which adds to the atmosphere.”

of fun with colour. Lynne loves these products because they don’t include paraphenylenediamine (PPD).

Between them, they have had a lot of experience, and can turn their hands to just about anything. Although they don’t offer extensions, there’s nothing else they can’t do and Lynne in particular loves nothing more than working on the more avant-garde styles, which she is well-known for.

If you’re wondering what makes The Cutting Room special, it’s the warm welcome clients receive which is important to the team. They want their clients to feel that they belong. They all just love hair (which is handy!) and also love working together. The salon has a lovely vibe. You can tell they all get along. They love discovering different colour techniques and cutting skills and options. They are also very adept at corrections (we’ve all been there!). They also have a complimentary drinks menu which is also a very welcome addition.

Glastonbarry Tribute Festival was launched in 2013 and 2023 marks its tenth anniversary. Based in the picturesque Romilly Park, in the popular seaside town, it has grown a loyal following and a reputation for being a brilliant music and social event.

A spokesperson for Mack Events said, “We welcome up to 7,000 visitors a day to our fun, friendly and super entertaining tribute festival. Featuring some of the best tribute acts on the circuit in the UK. The festival offers two main stages (one inside the big top and one outside in the field), licensed bar and food court with a wide range of food and drink on offer, DJs, stalls and other activities.”

The festival turned out to be a resounding success once again. It captivated music enthusiasts from all over the Vale and beyond. “It’s an event that’s firmly on the calendar for many which celebrated the timeless classics and legendary performers, too many to mention, that have left an indelible mark on the music world,” they added.

The long weekend event kicked off with Glastonbarry Juniors with tribute acts from Dua Lipa, Ed Sheeran and Katy Perry, plus rides, stalls, games, workshops, magic show, tiny tots disco, special guests and mascots and a food court.

Saturday and Sunday were jam packed with top quality tribute bands including Adele, Kings of Leon, Fleetwood Mac, Bob Marley, Elton John, Coldplay, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Madness, Take That and the fine finale - Queen - which had everyone up singing and dancing. “It was a truly brilliant atmosphere,” said Jennifer Hobbs-Roberts, Editor of Vale Life magazine.

channelled the spirit and essence of their idols, transporting us all back in time to witness some truly iconic performances.

The festival provided a unique platform for both seasoned and emerging tribute acts to showcase their extraordinary talents and passion for the music they honour. From the roaring cheers to the soul-stirring sing-alongs, the festival became a harmonious fusion of nostalgia and euphoria. It was an unforgettable experience that united fans, paid homage to music legends, and affirmed the everlasting influence of these extraordinary artists on generations to come. Former Wales and British Lions Rugby Player, Jamie Roberts, said, “A very fun and exciting event! We love it!” Jamie would know a thing or two about playing to the crowd.

Well done to all the team at Mack Events, their sponsors, and everyone involved for once again putting on a stellar event. Like them, we’re already looking forward to what next year’s event has to offer.

Good for the Barry economy

Glastonbarry weekend gives the whole town of Barry a major cash injection. Marco Zeraschi, owner of Marco’s Café on Barry Island, said, “I lose count of the day visitors we receive over the Glastonbarry week with all visitors singing the praises of the festival. The bars, hotels and restaurants are all full, and the taxi services are almost overwhelmed. You have done the whole town proud with your professionalism in the way you have made this event one of the biggest in the Vale. Well done.”

A big thanks to Martin Gibson for his amazing photography. His images truly captured the vibe of the weekend.

Jo Buckerfield established Your Space Living in Llantwit Major back in 2012. Jo says, “It was a leap of faith” but she believed in herself, and her confidence has paid off.

YOUR SPACE L IVING

RAISING THE DESIGN BAR

Twelve years on, Jo’s passion hasn’t waned. Now joined by husband, Mike, Your Space Living is busy creating beautiful kitchens and interiors that transform lives. “It’s been a wonderful experience,” she says. “Very empowering! It’s great working for other companies but I always knew I wanted my own business. It was important to make sure that I was working directly with clients at every stage of the process.”

We ask her how she thinks she’s different. “The majority of kitchen retailers are more interested in sales figures and often neglect the service. Our approach is very different,” she says. “Our German made Pronorm kitchens and Welsh made Shaker kitchens are top quality but it’s always service that people comment on most. There’s more to a kitchen renovation than cabinets and appliances. We take the time to explore multiple design options, including the structural changes needed to create the ideal family space. We take care of everything, from planning applications, to building work, plumbing, electrics, furniture installation and decoration. Our ‘design led’ project management service looks after every detail.”

Traditionally
in Wales
styled kitchens made

Jo is a graduate from Kingston University’s prestigious Furniture Design BA. This, along with two decades of experience, guides clients through a bespoke design, build and installation process. With Jo leading the project, clients are able to step back and let the magic happen.

Jo is the antithesis of the typical kitchen salesperson. As a hardworking mother of two, a wife and a designer, Jo knows how to create your forever home. She understands the need for quality and the importance of budget. “Your Space Living offers clients something completely unique. We create solutions that are beautiful and practical, individually tailored to the clients’ needs,” she says. “We’re working with families who want to optimise their space. A room needs to work for them on a daily basis not just look pretty. We also like to manage the installation, so that we can control the transformation without letting

problems spiral out of control. We hear plenty of horror stories where kitchen renovations have gone wrong. That doesn’t happen on my watch!”

Whilst Your Space Living love their kitchens, they also design and create bathrooms, bedrooms and living spaces. “Naturally, we’ve evolved,” Jo explains. “We build relationships. Our clients trust us, so it stands to reason they’re going to ask us to help with other parts of their home. We have our own team of talented and trusted tradespeople.”

Jo’s master carpenter has worked with her for eleven years. “I’m a perfectionist, luckily, so is he and the results speak for themselves.” Jo is interested in every detail, from the groundworks to the kettle placement. “We’ve recently employed another qualified designer in Ceri. We are growing I’m really excited about making Your Space Living a real design leader in the area. We certainly have the talent and the skills to get the job done.”

Most of Jo’s work comes from word of mouth. “Clients have returned over the years, and they’ve introduced me to their friends. It’s the ultimate endorsement,” she says. “When a client recommends us, I know we’ve hit the mark.”

If you are planning a kitchen renovation in the future, take a look at Your Space Living’s online portfolio. If you’re inspired and want to find out more, feel free to get in touch. Just prepare to fall in love with your home, all over again.

UNION A RCHITECTS

Are you formally trained?

We both trained at the Manchester School of Architecture going on to post graduate degrees at the University of Bath and North London. We are registered with the ARB and RIBA, and have more than twenty years professional experience. I spent my formative years with the designer of the Eden Project, Nicholas Grimshaw and Partners in London, working on high profile projects in the education, transport and cultural sectors across the world. Then several years working on bespoke, contemporary houses across the UK before co-founding Union in 2012.

Jim, my co-director, worked in a senior role for one of the UK’s most highly regarded and widely published residential architects, Paul Archer Design, delivering highly bespoke, contemporary houses and house extensions.

What inspired you to be an architect?

Since I was a child, I’ve loved making use of my creative and problem-solving skills. As practicing architects, we can make a difference to how people live, and improve the built environment for all both visually, and in terms of preserving our planet for future generations.

What do you love about what you do?

I enjoy analysing and interpreting a client’s design brief, finding creative solutions that surprise and inspire them, then seeing these concepts realised on site as a project is built. I also enjoy meeting clients from diverse backgrounds and leading multidisciplinary project teams of specialist consultants, builders and subcontractors on a wide variety of projects.

I started learning Welsh in 2017 and now enjoy interacting with clients, consultants and other project stakeholders in the Welsh language on a day-to-day basis.

Do you have a particular style you are known for?

We specialise in contextual, contemporary buildings, taking advantage of clean, modern lines and cutting-edge building technology, whist allowing the building or extension belong in a historical setting. Our past projects have often involved period and listed buildings within conservation areas. We understand how to best preserve these assets and create positive interactions between old and new. A project must forge relationships with its context whether that be through referencing existing proportions, massing, or materials. Establishing these bonds allows a sense of harmony to emerge. Our excellent track record, gaining planning permission for projects in challenging settings, is founded on the principle of clear design justification and developing strong relationships with planning officers within many local authorities.

Are there any architects you particularly admire?

I like architects like Stanton Williams, Carmody Groarke, David Chipperfield or Peter Zumthor - masters of understatement and materiality. Their work inspires me because of its subtlety and originality - beautiful buildings that enhance their setting instead of competing with it.

What three things should clients consider when appointing an architect?

The client/architect relationship Clients should feel they can get on with any architect they engage. Feeling sufficiently comfortable with each other will allow an open dialogue, and lead to an ultimately more successful project outcome.

We always meet clients prior to an appointment, free of charge, to discuss their project. This allows them to get to know us a little and helps ensure both parties are comfortable entering into a working relationship.

Style and experience

It’s obviously important to like the style of a designer’s work. No two projects are the same, but clients should be able to form an impression of this from an architect’s website, portfolio and initial discussions.

The appointment

Design professionals should clearly explain what work they will be doing if appointed, and the corresponding fees. We like to invest time making sure (often inexperienced) clients fully understand where they stand and feel confident moving forward with us. Transparency from the outset can make potentially stressful building projects much easier to navigate.

Sum yourself up in three words… Creative, communicative and conscientious.

Based in South Wales, architect Robert Lisle has a passion for contemporary design. Together with co-director Jim, they have created a practice with creativity at its heart.

The talented team at Valley2View have created what is arguably the friendliest and most forward-thinking convenience store in the Vale.

VALLEY 2VIEW

CONVENIENCE STORE & MORE

At Vale Life we love small indie shops. They’re at the heart of every community. Valley2View is based in Dinas Powys and was an absolute lifeline to customers during the pandemic. Since then, the business has grown through innovative management and excellent customer service.

This new innovative community store is always...#GoingTheXtraMile!!

Lockdown taught them a lot. “During the pandemic we had a lot of high-risk customers who needed deliveries, so we extended our delivery service to seven days a week. When relative normality returned, I looked into the environmental impact and started to recycle the fruit and veg delivery boxes - we reduced our waste volume by 85%. Customers are always happy to return them.”

Sustainability is a high priority. “We reduced our food waste by 90% by ordering stock as needed,” adds Leyla. “We have a customer request book so they can order what they need, and we get the item in the next day (aiming at zero waste).” They’ve also reduced plastic waste by using brown paper

As a family they developed a work experience programme for local people/adolescents. So far, they have successfully employed nine who’ve gone on to further education and employment, and are also working with Career Wales. “Our recent project is to support locals through the costof-living crisis. For example, eggs! They were in short supply, but our ‘eggcellent’ service never disappoints. Milk, cheese and most essentials are, when possible, cheaper than our competitors. We care about our customers. They’re so important to us.”

Their hard work, determination and dedication to the Dinas Powys community is paying off, recently becoming a finalist in the Business Awards UK; and they pride themselves on wherever possible sourcing British produce from local suppliers.

TESTIMONIALS What customers say

Fantastic old school customer service. Great selection and will deliver to your door. Let’s support local. Better quality and better personal service. 10/10. Ben Ford

It’s been a busy summer for the team at Glenn Griffith, and it’s not over quite yet. Beside the butcher and deli, they’re still busy with their hog roasts and event catering.

DID SOMEBODY

Yes, there’s much more to this muchloved Dinas Powys butcher than meat, but great quality meat and excellent service is at the core of everything they do. Since opening the deli, their business has taken off as more and more people discover this little gem on Camms Corner in Dinas Powys.

It’s not just meat at Glenn Griffith, but let’s start with that anyway because it’s where it all began. They’re a family butcher with decades in the trade. High quality meat and craft butchery are the cornerstone of the Camms Corner business. Pork, beef, lamb, chicken – their fridges are always heavily stocked. The lovely Mark (Glenn’s dad) is justifiably proud of what the family has achieved. “We’ve been here a long time,” he says. “We’ve watched some of our customers grow up! It’s a great community and we just love being a part of it.”

Just scanning the chiller cabinets, the display is superb. It’s a feast for the eyes. “Since opening the deli, we’ve been developing more products. The kind of things you can just grab, pop in the oven or air-cooker – all the prep and marinading has been done. John has been developing some amazing products this year and they’re not only beautiful to look at but tasty too.” We’ve personally tried several and can vouch for the flavour.

Talking about flavour, the deli has been gaining quite a following too. Glenn’s sister Ria along with Samantha look after the customers. All the usual deli products are available: olives, pasta, breads, tinned preserves and some gift items which is very handy for anyone struggling to buy for foodies. But what’s really taken off is their home-made produce - pies, sausage rolls, cakes and nibbles. The quality is excellent.

Hot drinks and cold are also available. Their coffee is particularly good (I’ve drunk enough of it to know). Recently I’d heard they had introduced a baguette special at the suggestion of a customer. This was a beef and gravy baguette. I had to try it so popped in on my way through. OMG. When we say food is orgasmic, this honestly was. The beef, the gravy... it felt somehow illegal to have this much flavour. I really hope they keep it on the menu.

Paninis are popular too here. But, for me, it’s the baguettes. I don’t know if it’s on the menu but my personal go-to is a white baguette with bacon rashers and smothered in their baconnaise (mayo with finely chopped bacon). I’ve said OMG once, but I’ll say it again. It is seriously divine. I’m probably going to ask for a tub to take home. I’m thinking dip (and a glass of chilled white wine).

28

SAY JUST M EAT?

Looking forward to Christmas, I ask Glenn will he be taking orders. “We already have!” is the reply. I’m not surprised. “There will be issues with supply for some products this year so it’s best to get orders in early so we can secure them with our suppliers,” he adds. “The earlier we can put our orders in means we can guarantee supply. It also means we can lock in prices which is good for customers.”

With that in mind, there’s never been a better opportunity to try this great butcher if you’re not already a customer. But, as I say, it’s not just meat here. If you haven’t already, you really must try the deli. It’s fab – we’re definitely fans, actually it’s more of an addiction. Honestly, you’ve got to try that beef and gravy baguette and the baconnaise. OMG.

Ewenny Kitchens is part of the highly regarded Ewenny Group. Vale Life talks to the design team, to find out more about what they can offer customers.

EWENNY K ITCHENS

CLASSIC & CONTEMPORARY DESIGN

When you mention Ewenny Group to anyone in the Vale, you’ll be forgiven for them thinking garden centre, landscaping and a lovely coffee shop but there’s much more to the company than this.

How did the Kitchens side of the business come to fruition?

The Ewenny Group have been successfully undertaking home and garden renovations for over thirteen years. Kitchen renovations are something we were always approached for and seemed a natural progression.

What experience have your team had in the kitchen industry?

Our design team has over thirty years! combined experience in the kitchen and home renovation industry and have the skills to genuinely accommodate all and any needs.

What style of kitchens do you offer?

We offer a diverse collection of kitchens and colour options; from sleek, understated true handleless to handmade bespoke solid in-frame classics. We have a standard palette of thirty colours but, on our painted doors, we can also offer a colour match option to create a truly unique one-off space, as individual as our clients.

Do you design and build kitchens for both private and commercial customers?

We predominantly undertake residential projects, dealing directly with the customers for their own homes. However, we can also undertake small scale housing projects where the specification requires something a more specific.

What appliances do you recommend?

We proudly work with many leading brands such as Neff, Lacanche, Quooker and Caple but, we can also work with customers’ existing appliances incorporate them where necessary.

Do you have a team of experienced fitters that you work with? If so, how long have you worked with them?

We currently work with two local fitting teams, and along with our in-house specialist building trades, we have long-standing working relationships to deliver only the best quality finish for our customers.

Can you carry out all aspects of fitting?

Ewenny group is a multifaceted operation, and here at Ewenny Kitchens we work alongside both our home improvement and landscaping departments to deliver turn-key indoor and outdoor projects.

34

How does the process work from initial contact to completion? (e.g., idea creation, colours, finishes etc).

All designs start with a meeting of minds and the exploration of ideas. This is best achieved in the home where everyone is relaxed, and our customers can more easily demonstrate what they like and dislike about their existing space.

As natural light affects how colours appear, we will look at all aspects of the existing and intended space before suggesting our designs. Presentations are always better in the showroom, as that is where products, colours and design features can be more easily demonstrated. Our 3D designs bring spaces to life and help visualise more complex new build projects. From there it’s just a matter of finalising details and arranging dates. It’s all quite simple really and we manage the project every step of the way.

How long does the process take from initial consult to completion?

The honest answer is it takes as long as you need. We can turn around a stockcoloured kitchen in around two to three weeks but, a more realistic timeframe is probably about eight to ten weeks. This gives the customer time to make creative and practical decisions, and for us to order specific products and then plan and arrange the installation. This lead time often extends a little during the summer and contracts again during the winter however, we do all we can to facilitate specific timeframes.

What makes working with you special?

Well, I’m not aware of another company in South Wales quite like us. We can take on both indoor and outdoor spaces simultaneously, and all under one roof - something we can also supply if needed! You may interact with a number of elements within the group but, we manage it collectively. Maintaining designer contact throughout and overseeing the works through to completion. The kitchens are the ‘icing on the cake’ for us you could say. They have enabled us to offer the full turn-key experience for our customers, and make the final photographs look fabulous.

Travel west out of Penarth town centre down Stanwell Road, over the railway bridge and, after the rather impressive Methodist Church on the right, you’ll come to a mini roundabout. Just across the roundabout, you’ll see Cornerswell Road, one of the Vale’s hidden gems.

To say “this road has it all”, as one local resident described it, is probably a fair statement. If you live in any of the surrounding streets, you probably already know what a great mix of small businesses grace its pavements.

CORNERSWELL ROAD PENARTH’S HIDDEN GEM

If you follow your nose on Cornerswell Road there’s a very good chance you will end up at Apothecary64 - one of Vale of Glamorgan’s hidden gems.

“We’re often referred to as “the best smelling shop in Penarth!” says owner Craig. No surprise really. This beautiful little indie shop is packed full of Craig’s beautiful hand-made creations.

Apothecary64 Home Fragrance has been firmly rooted in Cornerswell Road for over three years now, offering sixteen home fragrances with Candles, Reed Diffusers, Room Sprays, covering scent groups to suit everyone. “Our products are formulated, and hand poured in small batches here in the heart of Penarth,” says Craig, These are truly unique gifts and made with the highest quality soy-based wax.

Every season he introduces fragrances to match and capture the mood. Ynys y Barri is a favourite this summer with its tropical notes of bergamot, coconut, pineapple and mandarin. We have one in the house and it’s a beautiful summery scent – just perfect for reminding us that there is a sun in the sky from time to time.

Visit Apothecary64 to discover your new locally made favourite home fragrance. Open Tuesday to Saturday from 10am - 4pm.

It has a small indie convenience store where you can pretty much get most things you need. Incidentally there is still free parking along the road which is a bonus. Thankfully the meters haven’t arrived yet. Nor should they, parking fees kill the high street – (first two hours free works for us) just our humble opinion.

Talking about cars, it even has its own car showroom (SR Motors). They do have some lovely cars for sale there, and they have a good reputation by all accounts.

If you’re visiting, you’ll want to know if there’s anywhere to have a coffee and perhaps a bit of cake. Victoria Tea Room is one of our favourites (they’re featured on page 43). There’s a cool little indie eatery called Griff’s Deli too. Very good baguettes I’m told.

In the evenings. Residents benefit from having direct access to their very own local chippy called Penarth Fish Bar. We’ve been customers so can endorse it. The staff in there are lovely, friendly and welcoming. It’s very popular. And, there’s a Chinese takeway! We do like a bit of Special Fried Rice. It’s called the Wishful House

F LORIST 64

Cardiff born Julian has developed a very unique style of floristry that is loved by his customers. His arrangements are often referred to as “natural looking” or “floaty” and prides himself on being able to create something beautiful from intuition.

Julian is quite self-effacing. I think he’s one of the most talented florists out there. His weddings are stunning and photograph beautifully which is really important. “Floristry for me is a way of self-expression and I approach every project or arrangement differently. The most important thing is the message and what people will feel when they look at my work.” That’s why at Florist64 the strapline is “we love what we do”.

Julian says there is no facet of his work as a florist more challenging than sympathy flowers. “It is undeniable the joy we share in creating floral arrangements for weddings, births and other momentous occasions. Rare is the florist who can capture the somber joy of life after a loved one has passed, but working closely with their families and friends I always aim to deliver exactly that.”

Julian has a loyal clientele but understands that times are tough. “Being a Florist during these times is challenging - we had Covid to deal with and now the cost of living crisis - which has impacted on the industry as a whole, growing costs etc. The flower world has become more diverse and people are starting to understand that floristry is an art form, but we still have a long way to go until floristry is valued in the way it really should be.”

There is a local GP surgery nearby I’m told and the road benefits from a very good pharmacy (Ivor Owen Pharmacy). They operate the Common Ailments Service which is handy. If you need glasses or have eyesight issues, the lovely team at Arbuthnot Opticians are on hand to help. They also sell designer frames too – we do like their Oakleys. Cornerswell also has its very own dentist, Wellwood I’d describe it as a state-of-the-art dentist. It’s beautiful inside and has a super talented team looking after locals and patients from right across Cardiff and the Vale. There’s the Heatwave Tanning Centre (remember heatwaves?) along the road if you need

to top up your tan - you can look like you’ve been in the sun even though we haven’t had much. The chap in there is a real character. If your feet are in need of a little TLC then Neat Sweet Feet

are on hand (or feet so to speak). They offer routine podiatry treatment, in growing toenail surgery and a range of other therapies.

FLOORS ON FLOORS

Flooring tips: did you know?

Regular cleaning can extend the life of your carpet by five-plus years! It’s no surprise to hear that just like servicing a car, servicing your carpets will extend their life cycle. A deep, dry clean removes soil build up to prevent it being permanently trodden in over time.

Professional cleaning equipment far exceeds the cleaning ability of domestic vacuums. “Sorry Dyson, your vac is good but it’s the truth,” says Lawrence. Carpets can hold up to 4,000 times more bacteria than a toilet (per inch). Yes, you read that correctly (we wish it wasn’t true either). If allowed to build up, skin, hair, food, dirty shoes and spillages all provide bacteria with plenty to thrive on beneath your feet. The worst bacteria and moulds can survive for months, prolonging a repeating cycle of illness.

If you’re looking for gifts, then Craig who owns the beautifully boutique Apothecary64 can certainly conjure up something special. He has a great range of candles, diffusers, room sprays and greetings cards. Just across the road is Florist64 - Julian, in our humble opinion, is one of the most talented florists working in Cardiff and the Vale. His wedding flowers are sublime. But you don’t have to be getting married to enjoy the fruits of his labour. He creates beautiful little pots of gorgeousness, and they are very reasonably priced. Perfect for gifts.

Talking about weddings, just off Cornerswell Road you’ll find Beacon Printers. They design and print bespoke wedding invitations and a whole host of other printed matter. They are popular with artists so if you fancy some of your artworks or photographs turned into prints, greeting cards or postcards you know where to go.

On the Interiors side of things, Cornerswell has its little gems too. Floors on Floors can supply and fit virtually any kind of flooring you need. They’ve been around for decades so what they don’t know about carpets, well, you get the picture. They can even restore recycled wood block flooring!

Hygienist Services

Often mislabelled as a simple scale and polish a high-quality hygienist treatment will leave your mouth feeling fresh and healthy. Our hygienists are also able to spot potential problems in between your routine dentist appointments.

Teeth Restoration

Whether you need a simple filling or more complex treatment such as crowns or bridgework, Wellwood’s superior materials and digital capabilities will give you the highest quality finish for your teeth.

Teeth Whitening

Dental Implants

Missing teeth can be a big confidence issue but at Wellwood, Dr Osian Davies will talk through all the options in depth and help decide if a dental implant is right for you. With the help of their state-of-the-art CBCT scanner, replacing missing teeth can transform your quality of life.

Teeth Straightening

Many of you will have had braces early on in life but noticed that the teeth have moved as you’ve aged. Using the best teeth straightening system in the world allows the team to give you the smile you’ve always wanted.

Endodontics

More commonly known as root canal treatment, Wellwood has a dedicated clinician working solely on saving teeth. Whilst sometimes extraction of the affected tooth is the only option, let Wellwood assess if their expert dentist and his microscope can help.

Facial Rejuvenation

Using a combination of injectables and medical grade skincare Dr Anna Davies can help keep your features youthful and healthy. Anti-wrinkle treatment and facial sculpting along with the correct skincare regime can do wonders for your confidence and reducing the signs of ageing. T ROVE: A LITTLE TREASURE

Owned by TV & film prop buyer Helen O’Leary Trove is a celebration of the eclectic. From artwork to furniture, lighting to soft furnishings, Trove is the culmination of Helen’s search for the cool, classic and contemporary. She has a very good eye. I should know having been a bit of a skip rat in my time.

Helen has been prop sourcing for the last thirteen years. She has a degree in Art & Aesthetics, so she knows a thing or two about design and interiors. Just looking around, there’s cool, original artwork and prints, circus, fairground and showman signs, advertising memorabilia, kitchenalia, vintage and retro lighting, ornaments from the1930s onwards; mid-century furniture, Skandi items, garden wear and lovely soft furnishings – if it’s out there, Helen will find it. “I offer a sourcing service!” she says proudly.

I’ve no doubt, with her little grey book of contacts she could probably find anything you need. She taps into her network and is in demand from interior designers and private collectors. “The shop is the natural extension of my crazy obsession with lovely, quirky things,” she adds.

She says her long term plan might mean opening another shop – she has several containers of collectibles and curios so probably has enough stock. Looking for that certain unique something for your home, pop into Trove. If you’re anything like me, you’ll love it.

VICTORIA T EA ROOM

Wander onto the winding Cornerswell Road and you will uncover a vintage gem worthy of its place amongst Penarth’s colourful café scene, Victoria Tea Room.

Celebrating its ten year anniversary this Autumn, step inside and you will be sure of a warm welcome from Christine, the owner, and her team; Melanie, Heather, Jo and Emily.

Offering much more than an excellent afternoon tea and homemade cakes - though the bara brith and custard slices are to die for, there is a wide selection of breakfast foods, hot meals, and light bites also on the menu, and that’s without mentioning the homemade special of the day (the lamb chops are particularly popular).

Reasonably priced, and offering a full children’s menu, they also cater for all dietary requirements, including vegan and vegetarian options.

Pay a visit today to enjoy its charming ambience, wonderfully decorated with bunting and vintage photos of local streets and landmarks, or contact Victoria Tea Room directly to organise outside catering or book a private function on 029 2071 0301.

They are handily located a stone’s throw from both Trinity Methodist and Stanwell Baptist churches so would be a great choice for weddings, wakes, christenings and other celebrations, or could be a fantastic option for a cosy baby shower or hen do (did we mention they are fully licensed to sell wines, beers and spirits until 9pm?)

Stepping through the door into the Victoria Tea Room on Cornerswell Road is is surprisingly quaint and very welcoming.

Have you wondered why it is we’re hearing more and more moans about the quality of friends’ and family’s health of late?

H EALTH LET’S GET BACK TO BASICS!

Could it be our lifestyles? Could it be that we aren’t getting the basics right? Life is busy, yes, but is life too busy to look after ourselves? Angharad Evans believes she has the answers.

We have this wonderful, insightful, intelligent machine, our body, which we need to respect and look after. When our body is looked after, it is in a better position to look after us.

When we neglect our bodies, believe me, they talk to us. Your body will tell you. It may start with a whisper, then you’ll get an assertive talking to!

Perhaps this is the 24-hour bug you had a few months ago?

When we don’t listen, the body will SHOUT! Which can be exhibited through symptoms such as pain.

Looking after the body isn’t a choice, it is a necessity. Otherwise, we pay the price.

GOOD HEALTH IS SIMPLE Follow the basics!

What are the basics? I’ll tell what it’s not, it’s neither expensive nor difficult, but it is achievable.

1. Fresh air!

When the quality of the air we breathe is pure, it will give us energy. It will invigorate. Our lungs need pure air. We need to get out every day. Don’t forget about venting your home too. This could be opening your windows every day; this is particularly important for our bedrooms.

2. Sunshine!

Our bodies need to feel the sun on our skin. Get out! Enjoy the elements on your body.

3. Exercise!

This will mean different things to different people of course. However, the body needs to be moved every day.

4. Sleep!

Get those zzzzzzzz! Our body needs to rest. An early night needs to be the norm. The body works very hard for us overnight. It can only do its work if we’re asleep. If you struggle with sleep, ensure you eat your final light meal of the day by 6pm and unplug all electrical devices in the bedroom, even switching off your internet router will help your body to rest.

5. Stop the refined sugar! Including sugar in your tea, biscuits, cakes, and all processed foods.

6. Stay hydrated! Drink a glass of lemon water on waking and drink eight glasses throughout the body. Sipping the water is far more beneficial for your body than drinking it all in one go.

7. Eat healthily!

Ensure your diet consists of plenty of fibre, protein, and healthy fats.

If you want to get back to health, using natural remedies, contact me today and begin your healing journey.

Incontinence

INCONTINENCE

ARE YOU SITTING COMFORTABLY?

What effect does incontinence have on women?

Coping with leaks and involuntary accidents can take a toll on one’s selfesteem and confidence, often leading to feelings of isolation. The constant worry about embarrassing situations can lead to avoiding social activities and even causing withdrawal from cherished relationships.

How is this situation addressed?

Many women manage this stressful situation by using discreet protective measures, from pads and clothing or from not exercising or wearing the clothes that might show up the problem. Many women also try exercises in the hopes that this will solve the problem. We’ve all heard of pelvic floor exercises and, while these might help in minor cases, nothing beats the latest, innovative treatments; the Emsella Chair and the Ultra Femme 360.

Tell us more.

The Emsella is a tub shaped chair which the client sits on. She places her nether region in the centre of the chair so that the electric pulses reach the correct area. These pulses tighten the muscles so that, within a few treatments, the problem is much improved.

Is the treatment painful? No, not at all.

What about the Ultra Femme 360? This is a machine connected to a wand which is inserted into the vagina and emits a radio frequency which triggers collagen to support the bladder, create internal tightening and increased sensation during sex.

These treatments combined can help women find relief, reclaim their confidence, and regain the freedom to fully engage in life’s activities once again.

It’s been an exciting time for Suzanne Dickenson, owner of TPS (Trade Price Sofas) in Pontyclun. Her new Prestige Collection of sofas is taking off and could soon be in stores in London, Dubai, and the UAE.

SOFA PRESTIGE

Suzanne never seems to stop. She’s always on the go, but we managed to catch up with her at the Pontyclun showroom to find out more about the exciting developments.

Wow! It seems like you’ve been flying around the world. It’s good to see you back on the ground again. How are things?

Honestly, it’s manic, but I love, love, love being busy.

You mentioned you may be making an appearance at a certain store in London...

Fingers crossed. You know me. If it can be done, I’ll make it happen. Our bespoke Prestige Collection of sofas are really sought after, and we are in talks with Harrods of London, which proves they appreciate the quality. They are a quality product but competitively priced. We do aim to offer value for money. It’s why we have so many loyal customers.

Last time we talked you mentioned you were expanding your Middle East operation...

It’s so exciting. There are already eight furniture stores in Dubai who want to stock TPS sofas. It is really taking off. Better than I anticipated actually. I’m going out there again this summer to meet some new customers and to develop the business further. It’s so exciting. I mentioned our prestige Collection earlier – that’s obviously going to be really popular over there.

We are also looking for a rep to work for the company and deal with the UAE (United Arab Emirates) and grow the business to the next level. We are looking for someone who wants the opportunity of working abroad, who is super confident, who can sell our brand. I know if we find the right person, they’ll love it and do very well financially.

I’m delighted to be working with the Dubai Bling TV crew. They are covering myself and Ebraheem Husni Al Samadi of Forever Rose, London (www.myforeverrose.com). We are making the world’s first sofa with glass window and roses inside. This is a collective idea and one which I’m really proud to be working on.

Is the bespoke side of the TPS growing alongside the furniture ranges you sell?

The USP (unique selling proposition) of TPS is that we manufacture our own sofas which can be made to ordertotally bespoke. Customers are coming in all the time, and they can’t believe that we do this. Even if you have an awkward alcove in your house or archway, we can build a sofa around them. I believe this service is unique to us.

I know you do projects all over the country, but I understand you’ve been working closer to home recently. In Penarth... Yes, we have just finished assisting the refurbishment of the beautiful hotel in Penarth, Holm House. It’s a great boutique hotel in a lovely location with sea views. We supplied them with a range of sofas and chairs, ready for their summer season. We’re very proud to be associated with them.

So you do a lot of commercial projects?

Definitely, we’re known for our private furniture retailing but I suppose many businesspeople might not be aware that we work a lot in the commercial sectors. Hotels, hospitality, clubs, bars, offices, you name it, we do it. We are always looking to take on new ventures and work in partnership with architects, interior designers and developers. It’s certainly a growing part of the business.

I suppose that’s where your bespoke supply skills come in to play... Absolutely. If you want a thirty-foot L-shaped sofa with diamante buttons, we can create it. There is literally nothing we can’t supply or make. I really mean that. When we say bespoke, we mean it.

We chat to one of the partners and principal dentist, Rebecca Close, to find out more about this private dental practice and to introduce a fab new piece of equipment, the EMS GBT – the state-of-the-art game changer in teeth cleaning.

How long has High Street Dental been in Cowbridge?

I’ve worked in the Vale all my life and we moved to Cowbridge ten years ago.

What services do you offer?

We offer a full range of preventative and cosmetic treatments and are known for our Invisalign, teeth whitening and dental implants.

We also offer appointments with our hygienist and are delighted to have just acquired a new EMS GBT teeth cleaning machine.

Sounds technical...

It’s amazing. It’s minimally invasive and reduces the need for hand and sonic/ultrasonic instrumentation. It is safe, effective and gentle to teeth, soft tissues and implants. It can also be applied to primary caries and perio prevention in children and teenagers. It uses a disclosing agent to guide clinicians to remove all biofilm during professional tooth cleaning procedures. This ensures complete biofilm removal. It’s a real game changer!

Where do your clients come from?

We attract clients from all over the Vale, and beyond.

Do you currently have capacity for new clients?

Yes, we do. Our doorway is discreet onto the main street in Cowbridge with a short flight of stairs to the reception area. We are a very family orientated practice with a friendly and welcoming environment.

Keen dog walker - loves the outdoors.

I began seeing Rebecca Close many, many years ago when she carried out some complicated, large span bridgework for me. Rebecca explained at the time that bridgework would not be a permanent fix and due to the large span of the bridge would last for perhaps 10 years. It actually lasted 17 years. Shortly after, due to a house move I had no choice but to sign up with a more local dentist who told me that in his opinion the quality of the bridgework that Rebecca carried out was ‘astonishing’.

I have recently sought out Rebecca again at her Cowbridge practice for some cosmetic implant treatment as quite frankly I would not trust another dentist to carry out the work involved to Rebecca’s standard. I cannot recommend her highly enough.

Let’s face it, very few of us look forward to going to the dentist. While you want your dentist to take dental health seriously, what you also want is one that make you feel like you’re part of the family, one that truly cares for you and works hard to make you feel comfortable and happy (and pain free).

“We are a very family orientated practice.”

Choosing your own style is a mark of confidence. With fully customisable suits now available at King Fox, you’ll be ready for anything.

K ING FOX TAILORED FOR YOU

“Every detail is customisable on screen - it’s a brilliant concept.”

Your life is a big event - whether it's for a special occasion like a party or wedding, the personal tailoring experience at King Fox includes suits, jackets, trousers, waistcoats and shirts – they have every occasion covered, owner Leila tells us more.

Smart just got smarter

Leila has teamed up with ETCH, they offer customised jackets from £253, two piece suits from £350, three piece suits from £425 and shirts, including your initials on the cuff, for £85. The ETCH price list is really easy to understand, the majority of the cost goes on the letter grade of the fabric, and you can upgrade the buttons, lining and structure for a small additional cost.

Wedding suits

For the big day, you deserve to have something special! Men are lucky, unlike a wedding dress which is usually worn once, men can use their suits again and again! With a change of shirt or tie, it’s a whole different outfit. We can write up to fifty characters inside the jacket and a name, date or short sentence under the collar. We have had people write lyrics from their first dance, the names of the groomsmen, the date of the special occasion – you really can make it personal and special.

Christmas party velvet jackets can be ordered now for delivery in time for November/December.

The Etch process...

Make an appointment. Message leila@kingfox.co.uk or call 01446 679085 to book yourself in. Alternatively, you can just show up and have a no pressure look through the cloth books to get an idea of what’s available.

Design and visualise

It’s a good idea to come see us with photographs of the sort of look you want to achieve. Looking at a huge cloth folder can make choice even more difficult so it’s helpful to have an idea of what you want before you get here but it isn’t essential.

We can guide you through the process to define your style and fit using sample sizes and the unique digital tailoring avatar. This allows you to play around with ideas and see them on a screen before you commit.

We have swatch books with fabrics, button and stitching colours and a huge selection of linings. Being able to see and feel them in real life means you’re able to get the colour and texture right for you. Excitingly, we have just started being able to print photographs into lining of jackets! We actually put the artwork of international artist and musician @jpjonesart into a jacket for an art exhibition we did together, it was a great talking point.

We have a drinks fridge here in the shop and think we offer a really nice, chilled vibe. You can crack open a beer or soft drink and allow us to show you what’s available in a relaxing, enjoyable way. Once you have chosen your garments, you will be asked to pay half the cost as a deposit with the rest due on collection.

Good things take time... Your suit will be ready in around five to six weeks. Good things come to those who wait. Leila will inform you as soon as it is ready for collection.

“The personal tailoring experience includes suits, jackets, trousers, waistcoats and shirts.”

On a beautiful sunny day in August or September, Fredwell Cafe & Bar is a pretty lovely setting for an exceptional brunch in incredible surroundings.

F REDWELL CAFÉ & BAR

Sat out in the sun, nestled in a little secret valley just outside Cowbridge, there’s nothing better than unwinding with a Pistachio Frappe or a Lavender Gin Fizz and watching the world go by - even if it is very, very slowly.

In the centre of a former horse racing stables, and independently owned and run by Entrepreneurs of the Year, Chris and Jak, who opened its doors nearing the end of the C-19 lockdowns after building it throughout that long period when we were all locked up watching daytime telly. That’s what entrepreneurs do.

The pair were intent on creating an experience that expertly mixed Welsh with a French twist following their renovation of a farm in Northern France. Honing the skills of their team, they’ve brought French traditional dishes like the truly exceptional ‘Moules Frites’ with reimagined Welsh traditional fayre like the Bara Brith French Toast.

It’s been open seven days a week since January 2022, and has become a regular haunt for the Welsh rugby team, actors and TV personalities. No surprise then that it’s become incredibly popular with the Insta-food community as well as being ‘the place’ to book for a private party.

The duo have recently added a pantry to the front of the venue to showcase the best of Welsh food to take home; it’s quickly becoming a place to spend the weekend relaxing while spending the weekdays shopping for the more luxurious essentials.

We thought we’d drop in to find out a little more (well we are quite nosey).

What are the opening hours?

We’re open seven days a week. 9:30am to 3:30pm Monday to Thursday, 9:30am to 5:30pm Fridays. Saturdays it’s 10am ‘til 10pm (these are usually event nights) and on Sundays it’s 10am to 5pm.

Times are extended for event evenings and booking is highly recommended after 3pm.

What is the offering in the morning?

Ooh, the breakfast here is very good. I mean come on, it’s a Welsh reared pork and leek sausage from just down the road, two thick slices of Welsh bacon and all the trimmings on a local ceramicists plate. We love to support local crafts people. Although, you could go ‘avo and tomato’ or even the house beans on a wedge of sourdough? Both are veggie/vegan - there’s lots of choice.

And lunchtime and onwards?

On the note of veggie and vegan; the pizza options with Quorn chicken and vegan bacon are a work of art quite frankly. But if that’s not your thing, there’s always the fried chicken and buttermilk pancakes. Don’t judge me until you’ve tried it for yourself. The combination is unreal!

And then there’s the Moules Frites. It’s quickly becoming our unofficial signature dish. Creamy, garlic mussels with a wedge of freshly baked sourdough and fries for dunking. Mmm.

What happens during the evening? Now, the evenings change so regularly, it’s pointless letting you know what’s on the menu but there have been some fantastic offerings including the stunning Escargot, Penllyn Estate Burgers and much more.

They’re constantly having their kitchen taken over and, recently, there was a fantastic traditional Pakistani cuisine night which had three sittings and people waiting for cancellations at the door.

What do you think makes Fredwell special?

The local factor is huge at Fredwell. Supporting local businesses is the core message and you can really see it. It translates through on every level from the Halen Mon salt on the table to the Newton House Farm milk in your cappuccino.

In a time when chain businesses dress themselves up as local and, let’s face it, that’s sometimes a slight stretch; you can really tell that this place is owned locally, operated locally and uses local businesses too. And honestly, it makes us, and our customers, feel so good to know the money is staying local.

We did get a bit lost first time we came here...

Okey doke, so, we’re just off the A48, look out for the signs for ‘Pant Wilkin Stables’ And we’re just down there. Don’t forget, we’re not in Cowbridge town and not in Aberthin Village. And because we aren’t in the town, we have free parking!

Any plans to open more around the Vale of further afield?

Yes, we’re actively looking for more venues in the Vale and Cardiff –somewhere around the Bay would be good. We think we have the offering right – well, that’s the great feedback we’re getting from customers, so there’s no reason not to really. We’ve learned a lot since we opened. It feels like the right thing to do.

We also want to expand the takeaway service. It’s amazingly popular –watch this space, there are exciting times ahead.

TESTIMONIALS What customers say

I’ve been a regular to Fredwell in Cowbridge since March last year and I’m here pretty much every week for some event or another. I can honestly say I’ve never had a bad experience; in fact, I can say I’ve had an amazing experience every time I’ve popped in.

I was here on day one and have been to everything these two boys have opened and it’s been fantastic. They throw their hearts and souls into everything they do, and it really shows. A happy bunch of staff, awesome space, and great coffee.

Popped in for a coffee after visiting Chase Living. Had a sausage roll there. OMG, it was amazing. I’d return for that alone.

Nicky Bright was our summer cover star a year ago. Since then, this superstar has been burning the midnight oil with a host of new projects. We’re nosey, so we wanted to know more!

NICKY BRIGHT

LIFESTYLE & INTERIORS

We caught up with Nicky at a recent I Am Woman networking event. Nicky was there with daughter Morgan Mcloughlin - Nicky did a whole presentation on the minefield that is holiday lets plus how she uses Google effectively (if you’re thinking of getting on Airbnb, she has some interesting insight).

Morgan is also a rising star but in the social media world. She’s been working for fashion brands in London, so her presentation gave valuable insight into how to use social media effectively in your business - especially if you’re working in the beauty industry or the fashion sector.

Nicky’s presentations always go down well. In fact, she’s been in high demand over the last year. I was hoping for a catch up with Morgan too but, as Nicky explained, “Morgan’s had to dash! She’s off to London this afternoon for a strategy meeting.” So, we sat down after the event and chatted over good coffee (some cake may have been consumed too).

You’re clearly proud of Morgan. How is she doing?

I am very proud. They grow up so fast and, before you know it, she’s telling me how I should do things! But I still have a few tricks up my sleeve on social media. Nicky shows me an image on her phone.

This image was taken on a live video link during lockdown. Morgan was isolated from everyone. She was focused on her uni work and the results today have been rewarded. So, this is ‘Grad Spam’, I believe that’s the term. I’m running around telling everyone how proud I am of her graduating.

What did she get?

Bachelor of Arts with Honours in TV and Film: Hair, Makeup and Special Effects. She’s over the moon and I’m so proud. Ultimately, she wants to launch her own makeup brand. I’m sure she will - she’s determined, like me.

56
“I’m not one to sit back and just let life arrive. I go out there and make it happen.”

So you’re transforming properties and Morgan’s transforming people! Yes, we laugh about that but it’s true. We’ve been working together on a few projects so that’s been interesting.

Do you get on? They do say never work with friends and family, or children and animals for that matter... We do, but we need our space. She has her thing which is brilliant, and I love what I do. We start filming this week for prime-time TV. I transform properties and Morgan’s transforming them. It’ll be exciting to discover what we’ll create together and what’s ahead for us all.

You seem fearless these days. You’re always buzzing with energy... I think it’s because I love what I’m doing. Don’t get me wrong. I’m knackered. The physical stuff can be tiring, but I love rolling my sleeves up and getting on with it.

When we bumped into you in Cardiff, you were knee deep in all manner of unpleasant stuff...

Some projects are horrendous. Of course, the beautiful, contemporary and boutique interiors I create often don’t start out that way. That one was terrible. The whole place stank to high heaven. The previous tenants had trashed the place and the landlord was so relieved to have me work my magic. I sorted it!

I suppose the TV work must be welcome distraction from the physical side of what you do... Of course, but I do love getting in there, getting my hands dirty. Sometimes it’s quite therapeutic. I can announce that we have been honoured with a further award on our holiday let properties. The prestigious Welsh Tourist Board Holiday Let Approved Award “recognising our unwavering commitment to upholding the highest standards within the tourism industry”. Also, I was delighted and proud to be featured as one of Wales “Innovators of Property” in Amazing Welsh Homes magazine.

Have you any more projects in the pipeline?

I’m getting calls all the time. I’ve just transformed another public house and turned it into a self-catering venue.

I see these old pubs all shuttered up everywhere. What you’re doing could really bring them back to life... Definitely, we’re so short of holiday accommodation in Wales and rather than bulldozing these lovely old buildings, we can transform them.

Groups can hire them, bring their own food and drink and explore the area. The one down in Neath is extremely popular with mountain bikers and walking groups.

58

So have you been doing any more filming?

Yes, filming has commenced for my next project. It’s an exciting time - a real journey. It’s a little peek into my life as a creative designer. An insight into the process. I think people will enjoy it. Hopefully it will inspire some to do the same.

Has the documentary you filmed last year aired?

This Sunday on Channel 5 at 9pm, Rich House Poor House is a popular and thought-provoking show – if you miss it, I imagine you can find it on catchup or on YouTube.

Morgan and I would like to extend our gratitude to friends who took part and the family I swapped with who stayed in one of my holiday lets to experience my business. I will be mentoring the lady in question, helping her to achieve her goals of starting her own business and ultimately securing a better life for herself and her family.

What advice would you offer to someone who’s perhaps struggling to find their direction in life?

To achieve your goals and aspirations, it’s important to stay focused on the present. Tomorrow is the end result of the actions you take today. As someone who is constantly evolving and seeking new opportunities, I believe that success comes from a willingness to adapt, learn, and grow. So whatever challenges lie ahead, I face them head-on with confidence and determination to succeed.

To book one of Nicky’s holiday lets, visit the website below. We can certainly vouch for them having stayed in one quite recently.

The shop. Tell us about the shop in Pontcanna...

It’s more of a base. It’ll have a very small amount of product but, for the most part, the range I’m developing and sourcing will be on the website. I suppose I just needed a space that was HQ. I can use it for creative, meetings and planning. I’d like my kitchen table back. I know it sounds strange but opening the new shop in Pontcanna somehow validates what I’m doing. It just felt like the right thing to do. I hope I outgrow it. But, for now, it’s going to be the home of Nicky Bright Lifestyle & Interiors.

So what’s next?

Everyone asks me that? Perhaps it would be scary if there wasn’t anything - but I’m not one to sit back and just let life arrive. I go out there and make it happen. Keep growing and evolving, and embrace change, that’s my philosophy. What I did today was planned out last year - from acquiring new retail premises to refurbishing five new apartments, houses, the pub, creating my own product range, magazine and TV work.

Thomas and Thomas Solicitors, a leading law firm in South Wales, mark their fifteenth anniversary with the launch of a new office in Bridgend.

“The new office is more accessible for clients.”

THOMAS & T HOMAS

The firm, which provides legal services to individuals, families, and businesses in the region and beyond, officially opened its doors in 2008 with its first office in Maesteg followed by premises in Port Talbot. Having had a presence in Bridgend for over five years, the solicitors has relocated to larger premises at Dunraven Place in the town centre to accommodate its rapidly expanding workforce and client base.

Now with a 32-strong team across three offices (also a fourth office in Treorchy opening in August), and solicitors who specialise in their specific area of law, the firm covers a wide variety of legal matters including Commercial Leases and Residential conveyancing, wills, LPAs, Court of Protection applications, inheritance tax advice, civil litigation and disputes, and elderly care advice.

Melissa Thomas, Managing Director and solicitor at Thomas and Thomas Solicitors said, “We’re delighted to open our new office in Dunraven Place in Bridgend so we can continue to serve the legal needs of the local community. It is conveniently located in the heart of the town, offering a warm and welcoming reception area. It’s a great space for our clients while also providing a positive working environment for our growing team.”

The Bridgend office is headed up by Laura Matthews, Director and Chartered Legal Executive Lawyer. Thanks to its central location, wheelchair access and dog-friendly environment, the new office is more accessible for clients while remaining nearby other convenient services such as estate agents and banks.

“Our new office will be opening in Treorchy soon.”

“It’s been a very exciting fifteen years and we can’t wait to see what the future holds,” Melissa continued. “Clients like our forward-thinking approach, embracing technology in a way that makes legal services more accessible when they need it most. We aim to communicate in plain English, and without legal jargon, to build lasting client relationships based on trust and respect.”

Providing a convenient and efficient legal service has always been core to Thomas and Thomas Solicitors’ mission, a firm embracing a digital approach such as offering online conveyancing quotes and online identity verification as well as inperson appointments.

In Turkey, hospitality is everything. Welcoming someone is a cornerstone of Turkish culture, with Turks believing that visitors should be treated as guests sent by God. This couldn’t be more true of Usta, the popular eatery on The Knap in Barry.

USTA

TURKISH MASTER CHEF

We chatted over a good coffee with Manager Mehmet Horoz to find out more.

Who is the owner of the business?

The owner is Tahsin Konbdakci. He is a self-taught chef of forty years, having started learning his trade as a fourteen-year-old.

When was Usta established? March 2022.

In a nutshell, what would you say Usta offers its customers? Mediterranean cuisine. Fresh ingredients. Each dish made to order. We are open from 11am in the morning when customers are welcome to pop in and enjoy a coffee and cake. We are then open for lunch and evening meals.

You’ve recently added a new structure to the front of the building...

Yes, our terrace is a huge success. Our customers are loving it. They say it feels like they are on holiday. It has a lovely view of the Knap gardens. It has added a lot of value to the business given that we can seat more guests and, as it rains a lot in Wales, it has given us additional seating and an experience that our customers love. Passers-by look at it in the daytime and then book but it really does come into its own in the evening when the lights are on, and the diners are enjoying themselves. When it gets cold, we can turn on the heaters and when it’s hot we can roll back the roof and open the windows.

How many covers can you cater for?

We have fifty-plus covers in the restaurant and thirty-two in the terrace, which make us the perfect venue for private parties. We have had many bookings for celebrations since we opened, and the feedback has been fantastic. So much so, that many have booked to celebrate other family occasions.

What is the most requested dish?

There are so many to choose from but, if we had to choose, the sharing platters, both hot and cold, are very popular as are the lamb and chicken Sarma Beyti, meat moussaka, our fish of the day and not forgetting our baklava, cheesecake and pistachio cake, which are all very moreish and complete the meal perfectly.

Do you offer vegan and vegetarian options? Yes, we offer both options.

Does the menu change for every season?

We often change according to availability of produce. Please check our Facebook page for more details.

Do you offer a children-specific menu or is it just smaller portions of the adult menu?

We offer a variety of children’s dishes such as chicken nuggets and burgers but, very often, smaller versions of our adult menu are chosen.

What about your wine selection?

We have a range of non-alcoholic beverages plus a fine selection of spirits and wines. We are proud to offer Villa Doluca wines from the vineyards of Izmir, Turkey. Available both in white and red, these wines are crafted with passion and expertise and are very popular with our diners. Our non-alcoholic and alcoholic cocktails are also firm favourites.

Do you offer meals to take away? Yes, we offer Deliveroo, restaurant collection and we also have our own drivers who can deliver your meals to your home.

What are you offering for Christmas and New Year?

We are open over the holidays but do close on Christmas Day and Boxing Day to spend time with our families. We plan to be open New Years Eve and New Years Day.

What makes Usta special?

It has to be the freshness of our ingredients, the ambience of our restaurant and the friendliness of our staff. It’s a custom in Turkey that you treat every customer as if they were a friend coming into your home. We have so many returning customers because they say even after the first visit that they were made to feel so welcome. That means everything to us.

MUSIC TO YOUR TASTEBUDS HILARY & IAIN’S, OGMORE-BY-SEA

In the evening, the bistro food is excellent (we do love Iain’s perfectly cooked steaks), and locals love it for the fish and chips – you can eat in or takeaway. Either way, it’s delish!

Music nights

Make sure you catch their music nights, but you may need to book – they sell out quickly. Check their Facebook page for the latest dates.

Summer is here, and Hilary & Iain’s will be popular as it has one of the best sunset views in the Vale. But there’s so much more to this cool, little blue bistro.

We’re huge fans of Sunday lunch here –certainly one of our favourites in the Vale (The lamb is unbelievably good). Our cycling pals also love it as a destination. No better place to head to for a good brunch after twenty or thirty miles cycling.

Customers pop in for a coffee, an ice cream, a bit of cake or whatever happens to be on the Specials chalkboard. Hilary & Iain’s has something to suit all tastes, and prices are very reasonable.

Growing up, Ashley James always dreamed of owning his own automotive business. After years of hard work in the industry, the dream became a reality and he opened his first showroom in Hadfield Road in 2019. Four years later the opportunity to open a showroom in the seaside town presented itself and the rest is history.

A SHLEY JAMES AUTOMOTIVE

Driving along Windsor Road, you can’t fail to see the smart, black showroom and the range of extremely shiny cars lined up perfectly along the forecourt. The first thing that struck me was the very stylish branding. You can tell a lot buy how a company presents itself – especially when the owner’s name is over the doors.

I wasn’t in the market for a car but noticed a rather beautiful old crimson red Mercedes SL so pulled in to have a look. You don’t see many of these anymore and certainly not in this condition – it is/ was immaculate (it may have even been sold by the time you read this).

The chaps were very kind and accommodating and were quite happy for me to look around it. “I’m actually selling it for a good friend,” said a very dapper gentleman who introduced himself as the owner of the business. Ashley asked me if I needed anything or was just browsing, and we got chatting about cars as I am a bit of a petrol head.

I explained I wasn’t looking for a vehicle at the moment, but if I was, and money was not an issue, it would be a Mercedes G Wagon. That was it, we were off. We sat down in the very stylish, and immaculately clean, showroom and Ashley enthusiastically told me all about the old G Wagon he had bought and was restoring. It’s clear he loves cars, enough to want to work in the trade and open his own business.

He’s very personable. Not, well, you know like you’d imagine a car salesperson to be. Some of them come across as quite smarmy. Ashley and his team aren’t like that. They seemed genuine and friendly. He said he’d worked for Mercedes for four-anda-half years before starting his own business. Pre-loved and high quality are what he sells. The kind of vehicles he sources (all the top brands) have taken the initial hit of depreciation and are usually well cared for; some even have warranty. And if they don’t, he can arrange it.

66

I ask if he can arrange finance and he confirmed they can. Ashley James Automotive is AA Approved and has all the relevant industry credentials. That’s very reassuring for customers. “One of the things I like a lot about what we do is meeting new people. It’s what makes what we do interesting. They’ll pop in and have a look around, and we’ll talk - the weather, cars, everyone’s different. I always think they may not be a customer today, but they might in the future! Or they might know someone who’s looking for a particular model – we can source cars too – and we buy them, it’s all part of the service.”

I asked him why he chose to open in Penarth. “I really like the town,” he said. “It’s a lovely place, the people are really nice. It has a good atmosphere –traditional values. I like that.”

He could have opened anywhere in the Vale really but, clearly, Penarth put a spell on him. “It’s on the border between Cardiff and The Vale,” he adds. “So, we feel like we’re part of the city and The Vale. I could always see us here! It just felt right There’s a real sense of community, which we are involved with. For example, we sponsor some of the local youth teams.”

We talk about food and restaurants; he really likes eating out in Penarth. “Great food here!” he exclaims. We reel off our favourite eateries in Cardiff and the Vale and he gives me a few suggestions that I hadn’t heard of. They are carefully noted.

I ask him what he thinks makes Ashley James Automotive different - what sets it apart? “We aim to build relationships. We want to exceed your expectations. Trust is everything when buying a car. It is in our nature to go above and beyond the usual service. We’re proud of the reputation we have gained for being organised and efficient. We’re attentive and, I know it’s a bit of a cliché, but we go the extra mile. I think our reviews back this up.”

Ashley is keen to stress they sell low-mileage, affordable cars with low insurance, ideal for first time drivers.

If you’re looking for a cool, relatively inexpensive hotel with a creative vibe in London, the Hyatt Place London City East might tick all your boxes.

HYATT PLACE LONDON CITY EAST

Location wise, the Hyatt works for us. We’ve stayed in this area several times before and it’s a great place to base your exploration of east London. We take the underground from Paddington and it’s around a twenty minute straight through journey to Aldgate East. For reference, the Tower of London, Tower Bridge and the Thames are less than twenty minutes away on foot. Being a mere two minutes away from the hotel, Aldgate East tube station is your gateway to central London and beyond.

Courtesy of GWR (bandits on the line in Gloucester allegedly) we were delayed setting out so arrived late afternoon on the Friday – still enough time to have a wander around the area before dinner.

Our room was tastefully designed with a very contemporary bathroom complementing the design. No bath but a fab shower that was large enough for two. Add cool contemporary chrome fittings, moody tiling and fluffy, uber soft white towels and the scene is set. The shower, by the way, was excellent.

The room itself felt a little Scandi and, like the hotel, conveys modern, understated coolness. The king size bed was very comfortable, and a duvet adorned with super soft cotton completes the experience. Handily, the sockets feature USB ports for charging - another tech box crossed. The TV was easy to use too – worth noting – more often than not they’re a nightmare. But not here.

Our eighth-floor room was blessed with a balcony, including Conran-esq seating and a low table, and the views are pretty amazing, especially in the evening as the sun dips and London’s lights perforate the skyline’s silhouette.

“A great place to base your exploration of east London.”
70
YES, IT’S A MOUTHFUL, BUT A VERY TASTY ONE

Living low as we do in the Vale, the minute we elevate at any hotel we instantly become enthusiastic voyeurs – scanning everything within eyeline and below. People become ants and there’s something fascinating about just watching them go about their business. To be completely honest, that’s why we visit London - it’s a world away from our coastal and countryside home, and it’s just fun experiencing a different way of life.

There’s a subtle battle of converging cultures going on in Whitechapel. London, unlike US cities, doesn’t seem to rise, it appears to spread. Cultural influence is like the tide, it ebbs and flows and it’s usually the one with the most money that wins. Is that a bad thing? Only time will tell. What it does mean is that within a five-minute walk you can transition from an edgy, graffiti filled street (good graffiti too) to a slick, stylish bistro filled suburb. That’s London, and we like that.

Dinner booked, we freshened up before heading down to the lower ground. You might be forgiven for thinking it would be dark and oppressive but no, the smart design continues, and it shares the same level as reception (sometimes you have to hit rock bottom before you can rise again – therapy note to self). But for the next two hours, rock bottom, it turned out, was a very good place to be.

As therapy has raised its ugly head, and food mood is on the menu, the restaurant manages the schizophrenic transition between breakfast venue and cool evening eatery exceptionally well. It’s design, combined with its lighting ensures the transformation works particularly well. The scene as they say was set.

The restaurant is called Zoom East Kitchen & Bar. It’s open to everyone for lunch and dinner. Its Sicilian authentic menu was full of tempting sounding dishes, so over a cocktail (for me) and a super smooth, Sicilian Merlot for Jennifer we made our choices.

As we don’t eat Italian food much (we do really), we suggested the waiter choose for us – it seemed like a fun thing to do.

Aperitivo (from the deli): Caponata to kick things off – chef’s own family recipe. Sicilian relish, aubergine relish, raisins and pine nuts. Not usually a fan of aubergine but it was delicious. Quite a surprise. We would certainly never order it ordinarily. A very good start.

“Rock bottom, it turned out, was a very good place to be.”
71
“The views are pretty amazing, especially in the evening as the sun dips and London’s lights perforate the skyline’s silhouette.”

Antipasti (sharing plates): Fritto Misto. There are a couple of options (including vegan/veggie), but not being vegan or veggie, we munched our way through crispy tempura market seafood and courgettes. The tempura was divine and the black ink aioli that accompanied it was just sublime. I was tempted to ask for a jar to take home. I could have eaten it all night.

Primi: Jennifer enjoyed a lovely steak (from O’Shea Butchers) with an Italian Salmoriglio sauce which was superb. It certainly made the grade, and the steak was perfectly cooked. For me, Beef Shin Mafalde. The pasta that means “Little Queens” after the Princess Mafalde of Savoy (an interesting wartime story – look it up). Beautiful ribbon pasta, flat and wide. With braised beef shin and porcini mushroom ragu. Weirdly I can smell it and taste it now as I’m typing (never had that before!). Wow, it was, unbelievably good. I would certainly order it again.

We closed this particular Sicilian chapter with a couple of desserts. A very rich chocolate orange flourless cake and a silky-smooth Almond Biancomangire – both were the perfect end to an excellent meal. We agreed that leaving the choices to Monika (our server) had worked out well. We had rolled the foodie dice and won.

The following day, after an excellent buffet breakfast, we decided to walk to the Thames (about twenty minutes away) and follow it west then for a few miles. There’s plenty see along the way (Tower Bridge and the Tower of London) and if you enjoy people watching, well, London ticks that particular box – all life is here.

Sicilian Chef Vittorio Meli Mixologist Kristian Smith
“Zoom East’s alfresco space, The Terrazza, opened this Summer with a wall mural by street artist and illustrator Sam Kerridge. Artist’s work can be found throughout the hotel.”

We passed St Paul’s Cathedral along the way, walked up Fleet Street (a shadow of its former self but, nonetheless, fascinating) and headed for Seven Dials, an area we’ve visited previously. It’s packed with boutiques, eateries and indie businesses and has a buzzy, cool vibe. It’s not far from Covent Garden. We had a mooch around Chinatown and ended up having a late lunch in an Angus Steak House. I’ll hold my hands up, we used to turn our noses up at them until we actually tried one a few years ago. Wow! They know how to cook a steak. Since then, we’ve been huge fans and we returned again this visit and weren’t disappointed. Great food, great staff, great service. “Did somebody say just meat!” Yes, we did, and it was excellent.

As we stepped out into the summer sun, we noticed everyone looking up. No UFOs fortunately – thankfully the fake invasion wasn’t happening today, but for the next twenty minutes we had the most amazing air display. Of course, it was the Coronation flypast! Jennifer said seeing the Spitfires, Hurricanes, and Red Arrows going over and London draped in Union Jacks really brought a lump to her throat. She said it made her feel quite emotional. I agreed. It’s not often you get a free show in the West End and what a treat. It made our day, and our stay.

We were going to get a tube back to the hotel but thought we could walk it in under an hour, so we did, and, of course, that was interesting in itself. We got back to the hotel and had a quick freshen up before heading up to the rooftop bar, PocketSquare.

Sitting, cocktails in hand, watching the sun go down with some chilled grooves being handed out by an equally smooth DJ was the perfect end to a lovely mini break. The Hyatt was glowing gold in the setting sun, and we had a little glow about us too. There are lots of hotels to choose from in this area, but the Hyatt Place London City East’s ingredients should certainly put it on your radar. It’s always nice when a hotel lives up to your expectations and, in this case, exceeds them.

As we do, we always doff our headwear to the staff who can certainly make or break hotel experiences. At the Hyatt Place London City East (yes, it is a mouthful), they were exceptionally accommodating and made our stay a pretty pleasurable one.

Special mention for the breakfast team, Monika (I don’t believe she sleeps), she reminded us of that film ‘Everything, Everywhere, All At Once’. She was there in the morning, the evening, the afternoon and never seemed to stop - respect. And, last but certainly not least, Michael, the General Manager, who has clearly built a team to be proud of.

Would we return? Yes, definitely. It’s a lovely hotel, with cool views, and conveniently located. And we hadn’t really scratched the surface locally. There is so much to see and do within a short walk or a tube journey. We’ll certainly revisit.

Tag Heuer Monza Chronograph CR5112

The Heuer Monza was originally launched in 1976 as a special edition to celebrate Niki Lauda’s 1975 World Championship win for Ferrari. Ferrari being from Italy led to the name Monza, which was where the Italian grand prix was held. The Monza originally used the same case design as the Carrera, but with a “blacked out” PVD case and dial. This version, the reference CR5112 was launched in 2011 as a Limited Edition of 1,911 pieces and was inspired by a 1933 single button chronograph made by Heuer.

Thousands flocked to the Vale of Glamorgan Show on a very sunny Wednesday in August for a family fun day out full of activities, competitions, and plenty of livestock.

SHOWTIME

A bit of background to the show. The society was established in 1772 making it one of the very oldest on record. Last year marked the beginning of an exciting new era for the Vale Show as it moved to from Fonmon to Penllyn. Always held on a Wednesday in August, the Vale Show regularly attracts over 20,000 people from all walks of life - from town and from countryside.

Vale Show has grown considerably over the years and is now the largest oneday event in The Vale of Glamorgan. Alongside the livestock and horse showing there are more than 200 trade stands on the field marketing and selling a huge variety of goods and services.

A Food Court stands in the centre of the field selling produce, most of which has been grown or made in the Vale, along with a shopping mall, which allows small traders to exhibit. The Show hosts a large Craft Fair and Horticultural Show along with a Home Produce marquee, Dog Show, Rabbit Show and Countryside Marquee.

This year’s show

This year visitors enjoyed seeing the horses, show jumping, a chance to get close to the cattle and sheep, a new Rabbit Show, and the Vale Farmers Market Food Court, plus a fleece competition, Alpaca stands and vintage tractors. The horticultural section has been revamped by a Chelsea Gold Medal winner. The home produce marquee featured competitions for all. They had an agricultural machinery demonstration that is unique to the Vale Show. There was also an exhibition promoting the importance of good mental health in the farming community of the Vale of Glamorgan.

One main ring programme this year included horse classes and a Grand Parade of Prize-Winning animals. They had the BNX display team and the extraordinary sheep show. The organisers had a high standard show jumping competition running all day and, to finish, a Hunt Scurry.

With over 250 trade stands of all description including a record display of large tractors and machinery, a dog show with 700 dogs entered, craft fair, food hall as well as livestock competitions, spinning and weaving and many other craft demonstrations it really was a very entertaining day out in the Vale countryside.

Everyone clearly enjoyed the day. The sunshine helped as always and the ice cream vendors did a roaring trade.

We hope you all enjoyed the show. Visit the Vale Show website for further info and next year’s date.

Local traders and family were delighted to have a sneak preview of JRC Jewellery’s new home in Cowbridge.

As much as they loved their former building (which was both cosy and bijou), they are now delighted to have moved and opened a much bigger space. They are now able to fully display their stunning range of jewellery, which includes brands such as Georg Jensen, Ti Sento and their equally gorgeous range of fine diamond jewellery and gemstones.

Venetia Steele Boutique Launch Anniversary

Hard to believe it’s been a year already since Nicola Venetia Steele opened her fabulous boutique in Bridgend. But has her leap of faith paid off? Vale Life joined friends, family and shoppers to celebrate the boutique’s one year anniversary.

We had to ask Nicola if she had any regrets, and her answer? “I wish I’d had the courage to do it sooner!”

We’re not a bit surprised. The boutique has gone down a storm and Nicola’s personality and sheer determination to succeed has won her many admirers in the local business community, plus thousands of loyal customers.

One lady said, “Nicola’s brought a touch of glamour to Bridgend and we’re so happy she has!” Another local business owner said he was delighted that Nic had chosen Bridgend to locate her boutique. “There’s no doubt she’s increased footfall in this part of town,” he claimed.

There are some brilliant indie businesses in Bridgend now and hopefully more will join Nicola and the others helping bring Bridgend back to its former glory.

The celebration was the usual glamorous Nic Steele affair. She does nothing by halves. The Mayor and Mayoress popped in to congratulate Nicola on her day of celebration and visitors enjoyed Prosecco and nibbles. Her two hunky helpers Tommy and Thomas ensured there was a fun, relaxed atmosphere to the day with backing sounds from DJ Andy. Even Nic’s two beautiful dogs, Matilda and Sochia, put in a guest appearance along with Autumn from Hope Rescue Bridgend, a charity Nicola is particularly passionate about.

Vale Life was delighted to be invited and we’re sure there will be more Venetia Steele fashion shows and charity events announced soon.
