WELCOME If you haven’t changed your wardrobe from summer to winter yet, then our fashion features will give you all the inspiration you could possibly need. We’ve got a great feature on our capital’s arcades - Cardiff boasts the highest concentration of Victorian, Edwardian and modern indoor shopping arcades in Britain, so be sure to step inside for a retail treat.

Now is also a good time to spruce up your home or give it a whole new look altogether. What better way to do this than a new kitchen? We chat to a couple who did just that and it changed their lives for the better. In this issue we pay homage to Mill Lane, where eateries and wine bars abound, and home to the newly opened Amici. Situated opposite St David’s 2 and the many theatres and entertainment venues, what better way to spend the day in Cardiff – shopping, having a spot of lunch, catching a movie or show, followed by cocktails and a good old dance. Bliss! We’ve also got features on little Chelsea aka Pontcanna, and the market town of Cowbridge. These are both popular destinations where you’ll find charming independent shops selling goods not seen on the High Street. If it’s individuality you want, then treat yourselves to a shopping trip with a difference. There are lots of reasons to get out and explore what’s on offer throughout the city this autumn - there really is so much to choose from. I hope you enjoy this issue and can get a copy before they all go! See you in the winter. Jennifer Hobbs-Roberts Editor jennifer@citylifecardiff.co.uk

Honorary Doctorate for celebrated artist In recognition of his talent as a portrait painter, David Griffiths has been awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Wales. Together with the physicist Dr. Lyndon Evans, he was presented with the award by the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Wales, Professor Marc Clement, at a ceremony in St David’s Hall.

Professor Clement commented, “We are proud to celebrate the outstanding work of two people who may be from very different disciplines, but have demonstrated both the immense talent and unremitting hard work which it takes to gain such resounding success in their fields. It is a particular pleasure to award these degrees during celebrations for our new international graduates, providing them with inspiring examples of achievement to aim for in their own careers.” The Most Reverend Barry Morgan, Archbishop of Wales and ProChancellor of The University of Wales said, “David Griffiths’ portraits have their own intrinsic value, but as a body of work representing the most important Welsh people of their time, they will surely contribute to defining the way that Welsh society will be viewed by future generations.”

Addiction through the eyes of artists A number of Wales’ leading artists are contributing works to a unique exhibition which was unveiled at the Senedd in Cardiff Bay on 21 September. Dibyniaeth – Addiction will display new works by some of the country’s finest creative talents including Iwan Bala, Ogwyn Davies, Elfyn Lewis, Carwyn Evans, Kathy Williams, Karen Jones and Dewi Tudur. Most of the artworks have been created specifically for the exhibition using the theme of addiction in the widest sense. The exhibition, hosted by Dr Dai Lloyd AM, was showing at the Senedd until 23 September before embarking on a tour of other venues in Wales in January and February 2011. In addition to the exhibition in Cardiff, a dance troupe from the University of Cardiff will present a dance inspired by the poem Negative Print by Angharad Jones. The group have chosen to work in silence to allow the audience the opportunity to read the poem as they watch the dance.

Proceeds from the sale of the artworks will be donated to The Living Room Cardiff Project. The Living Room Cardiff is a free, bilingual day-care centre that will offer treatment to anyone experiencing difficulties relating to alcohol, drugs (prescribed or illicit), or any other dependency. The first stage of this exciting new project will be officially opened in June 2011. The story of one artist in particular who worked closely with an addict in recovery is particularly inspiring. Ingrid Pett composed a poem which was subsequently taken up by Ogwyn Davies as the inspiration for his particular piece. Ingrid Pett, said, “I would never have thought in a million years that something I had written would eventually end up as a piece of art on display in the Senedd. It is quite something and has given me an incredible sense of achievement. I hope my experience will inspire others looking for a way out of their addictions. There is light at the end of the tunnel.” Wynford Ellis Owen, Chief Executive of the Welsh Council on Alcohol and Other Drugs who sponsor the event, added, “I am very grateful for the support I have been given by these fantastic artists. ❧ 6 ❧

On receiving his award, David Griffiths said, “It is an honour and privilege to receive this award which, I would like to think, recognises the long and distinguished tradition of portrait painting in Wales. If it is also supportive of one’s efforts to maintain the highest standards of figurative art, then I hope it will be an encouragement to students to develop their own observational skills through portraiture.” www.david-griffiths.co.uk

I have been looking for a long time for a creative way to get the message of what addiction means and what it can do to people. I hope this exhibition will get people thinking and Ingrid’s example is testament to what is possible with positive thinking and the right type of support.” For more images see page 53.

Tailored education to suit your child With the best will in the world, the education system as it stands cannot always cope with the specific learning needs of each and every child. At Bespoke Education Services, you are guaranteed the extra tuition needed by your children at a time when their learning is compromised at school. They ensure your child learns in a way that encourages their individual growth. At the heart of their services is the absolute passion and expertise for making learning interesting and centred on your child. Working from the Globe Centre off Wellfield Road, they provide a professional and comfortable setting, where laptops and interactive whiteboards are available and is conveniently situated near local cafés and shops where parents can take time out whilst their child is in a safe CRB checked environment.

“Your child learns in a way that encourages their individual growth.”

Eamonn Ellaway, Director and one part of the husband and wife team says, “There are many barriers to learning and even the best teachers will struggle with large classes. Many children, even the brightest stars will just get by and others will lack the individual help they need because there are insufficient resources to support all cases of special educational need.” Whether your child needs a burst of support in a maths topic that they find difficult or need a term's worth of overall support and challenge, BES provide a bespoke tuition service for children aged six to eighteen focused on learning methods to suit all children’s styles. “No child is invisible here,” says Eamonn. “The programmes concentrate on the core subjects of English, Welsh, Mathematics, Science and IT and at secondary level all aspects of coursework, revision and exam practice. The website enables pupils with similar learning projects or problems to talk to each other. Parents are supported too and have total access to all learning aspects, with their participation being encouraged even online.”

A bright investment with Elltec Solar Choosing solar electricity for your home is more than just a commercial decision. We talk to Vernon and Sue Hanson from Lisvane who tell us more. “The generous terms of the Feed in Tariff, a government backed scheme which pays you for the solar electricity you make, made it an attractive investment for our savings, especially as the money you make from solar electricity is tax free. We also liked the idea of generating our own clean energy and doing our bit to reduce the carbon footprint. We looked in to it thoroughly and realised that our house, with its south facing roof, was ideal and that we would be able to generate around two thirds of our electrical needs with a solar electricity system.

“Our money is earning more interest than it would in a building society.”

We met with a number of solar companies but chose Elltec Solar Electricity for two reasons. Firstly, their price was the most competitive and, secondly, we were impressed by Richard’s technical knowledge and electrical background and felt he was someone we could trust. We liked the fact that Elltec isn’t fronted by a sales person but the same person who installs the system and knows the technology inside out. For us, a solar electricity system is an investment in every respect. Our money is earning more interest than it would in a building society and we are able to help the planet, too.” ❧ 7 ❧

The benefits of PV solar electricity panels are: ■ A vast reduction in electricity bills ■ A clean, renewable, source of micro generation electricity ■ Adds value to property ■ Works all year round during daylight hours Approved Photovoltaic ■ No maintenance Installer ELC54011 ■ Quick installation. THE WHITE MOVE The Ski Lodge has moved from its original location in Barry to a new purpose-designed retail space in Cardiff Bay. City Life talks with Jason Jeffery about the move and the exciting new season ahead. Why the move from Barry? For an active sport orientated store like ours The Bay is a perfect place to be situated. We’re just around the corner from the ice rink, national pool and the new white water rafting centre. Just take a look at our new building... it's such a fantastic site that we simply had to move in and bring The Ski Lodge to the capital city. This means that the store is a lot more accessible now to a wider customer base. We are still the Ski Lodge, but now open throughout both the winter and summer months. What can we expect from the new store? It will be the Ski Lodge that has been known and loved in Barry for 25 years, but with a little capital city twist. The biggest difference is clearly a store that remains open all year. Not only will we continue to offer everything you need for a trip to the snow but we’re pretty excited at the prospect of bringing you, in addition, a bigger range of lightweight technical and lifestyle wear including many products that will crossover sports. Everything you’ll possibly need from snowy slopes to wooded trails and the urban jungle.

CITY FOOD & DRINK EACH ISSUE WE BRING YOU THE VERY BEST IN AND AROUND SOUTH WALES

C LY T H A

The Clytha Arms A ‘real’ country pub A great ‘real’ country pub is hard to find these days so you can imagine our delight when we stumbled upon The Clytha Arms while out for a drive recently. Set in its own pleasant grounds a mere three miles from Raglan with its famous fifteenth-century castle, and six miles from the market town of Abergavenny, this refreshingly informal pub is a real home from home for locals and visitors alike. We entered the pub and were immediately greeted with jovial and happy banter from a group of local gents sat at the bar. I’ve walked into many a country pub only to be met by a scene from An American Werewolf in London and this was so very different. There were a few couples with young children having food and on the next table a more mature couple with dogs lying at their feet. I can honestly say that within minutes it felt like we were part of the furniture. We struck up a conversation with Sarah, daughter of owners Andrew and Beverly Canning, and she explained that The Clytha has six real ales, offers snacks and a wide variety of tapas in the public bar, but most recently, its becoming more popular with foodies. Andrew is head chef and used to chef at a very popular Cardiff restaurant. Incidentally The Clytha was awarded Gwent Pub Of The Year for the fifth time in 2007 by the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA). The pub is also mentioned in numerous good food and gastropub guides so, with this in mind, we were keen to sample its wares.

To start, we had Leek and laver rissoles with beetroot chutney and Grilled creamed Queen scallops with a parmesan crust. Both were good but the scallops particularly so and all appropriately ‘washed down’ (well we are in a country pub) with a very pleasant Terra De Lob Sauvignon 2009. For our main course, I enjoyed the Roast Madgett’s Farm duck breast with berries and merlot. When I say enjoyed... you know when you like the taste of something so much you have to eat it faster and faster – that kind of enjoyed. It was moist and a little pink: truly magnificent. My wife gambled on the Salmon in filo pastry with crab and laver bread sauce, and won. I had to have a taste and it was utterly divine. The side vegetables (some from pub’s own garden) were perfectly cooked. I couldn’t help noticing that the chap on the next table had ordered a Whole crab with Thai chili sauce which looked stunning, and he seemed very happy with his choice too. To finish we chose Homemade meringue nests with raspberries and strawberries, again picked from the garden, and Chianti sorbet served with sauterne cream with spiced prunes. We rounded off a thoroughly enjoyable evening with shots of Penderyn whisky and an off-the-shelf Torres brandy followed by espressos in delightful cups and saucers with homemade chocolates. We enjoyed it so much we even ordered a selection of Welsh cheeses!

“We entered the pub and were greeted with jovial and happy banter.” ❧ 10 ❧

Yes we indulged but The Clytha Arms is that kind of place and, if you indulge a little too much, they have four rooms, including one with a large four poster and all en suite. The pub also hosts an annual Welsh Beer, Cheese & Music Festival on August bank holiday and an equally renowned Cider Festival each May bank holiday. As we’re in business, Sarah was keen to let us know that they can also offer a private room for small conferences with video facilities and refreshments. Come to think of it, what a great location for one of those much needed team-building and brainstorming sessions... hmm, I feel a memo coming on.

PONTCANNA

Cibo is Italian for food and good food at that I like Pontcanna. It’s a little bit of Cowbridge in the heart of Cardiff. My wife likes the boutiques I like its pace. Time always seems to slow a little in Pontcanna and especially so at Cibo’s. In fact, prior to this particular lunch, the several times I’d visited Cibo before I’d only ever ordered soup (and very nice it was too). If only I’d known what I was missing. On this particular day we were in the area for a few meetings and decided, as it was a sunny day (and we were feeling good about life), that we’d have ‘proper’ lunch. In other words, actually make time for lunch and enjoy the experience. The truth is, it was perfect - as you’d hope a relaxing lunch would be. The staff were really friendly and the food was truly excellent – full of flavour and easy on both the palate and the eye. This is, in all honesty, Italian food as it should be. You can tell instantly that the kitchen cares about what goes out. The ingredients are so fresh and beautifully prepared. The flavours are wonderful and I couldn’t help overhearing the enthusiastic comments coming from other tables as they received their orders. This, combined with the happer banter in Italian from staff, created a backround of real authenticity. If you’d closed your eyes, you could have easily been having lunch in a restaurant in Italy and that’s high praise indeed.

“The truth is lunch was perfect - as you’d hope a relaxing lunch would be. The staff were really friendly and the food was truly excellent – full of flavour and easy on both the palate and the eye.”

Cibo’s does it all well. It’s a great restaurant - daytime or evening. It’s a great little place to meet for a coffee or light lunch with a glass of wine and do a little business and the courtyard to the rear is the perfect place to set the world right with a few friends over a bottle of Peroni and some antipasti. Pontcanna is an enjoyable and pleasant place to while away a few hours. There’s even a lovely park just a short walk away (Pontcanna fields) and Cibo is the perfect place to punctuate that time with a great lunch. If you’re in a relationship there are Brownie points to be had by the bucket load here, so do yourself a favour and book a table. Cibo 83 Pontcanna Street Pontcanna Cardiff CF11 9HS 029 2023 2226

P O N T YC L U N

Treat yourself to a Taste of the East If, like me, you tire of the same restaurants and the endless crowds and Christmas madness typical of a city centre, a trip out to explore unchartered territory could be just the ticket. What’s more, if you can hop on a train and travel only 15 minutes out of Cardiff for a relaxing meal in relative anonymity, then that’s a bigger bonus - especially if you like a tipple. Like most of us, I battle with the ongoing challenge of finding time to catch up with friends, so as my friend was prepared to travel out of town to my neck of the woods, we plumped for Taste of the East in the local village of Pontyclun. Owner Benny Wong is an enthusiastic restaurateur and he shared with us his plans for the future. We then relaxed while he served our perfectly chilled and very pleasant house Sauvignon Blanc, providing the perfect partnership to the meal that followed. And so to food and conversation - a marriage made in heaven! Being a spice addict, Benny suggested the Thai and Malaysian main dishes for that extra ‘kick’ not normally associated with Chinese cuisine. We took our time with the special mixed platter of Chinese Hors d’oeuvres that are prepared for a minimum of two people; and between us we polished off the crispy seaweed, sesame prawn toasts, chicken satay, spare ribs and spring rolls.

“Food is freshly cooked and the á la carte and set menus provide fantastic choice.”

With an adequate respite between courses, we eagerly awaited the main dishes. Chopsticks at the ready, we started with steamed rice and the delicately spiced Rendang Daging – a Malaysian style curry of King Prawns infused with lemongrass and curry leaves in an aromatic blend of coconut milk and spices. Then followed the Kung Po – a much hotter dish of chicken, spring onions and ginger and the smokiness of dried red chillies adding the punch. Being a fan of vegetarian food, I was keen to try the mixed vegetable Tom Yam Chow Mein – a Thai style noodle dish which, to be honest, was a meal in itself. We were struck by the welcome lack of greasiness often associated with Chinese food and we completed our meal feeling comfortably replete. Now into the third hour of our meal, we declined dessert, instead opting for locally supplied Ferrari coffee to round off.

Food is freshly cooked and the á la carte and set menus provide fantastic choice. Their trademark Endless Banquet Oriental buffet offers value and variety. This is no ordinary buffet though, as it is cooked to order and is served at your table without the need for you to leave your seat - how’s that for service? Benny says that the buffet option is a hit with groups of people celebrating birthdays or special events and they’re already taking bookings for Christmas parties. There’s ample parking outside and the mainline train station connecting Cardiff to Swansea is a two minute walk, which is handy if you want to sample the wine on offer. Day trippers will find plenty to do locally with retail parks and Leekes out-of-town store only five minutes away. After so much shopping, customers will want to take advantage of the discounted early bird buffet option between 4.30 - 7.30pm on Monday to Thursdays.

Gaetano Monteriso’s recipe for success I can be a bit fussy when it comes to food served in restaurants. I like to see the kitchen and the chef and his brigade in action. At a recent visit to Gio’s on Mill Lane, I was heartened to see chef Gaetano Monteriso hard at work. Pans were bubbling with freshly made sauces and a colourful array of vegetables and salads were on display in abundance. Our son Jack also got in on the action and made the pizzas for our lunch. City Life spoke to Gaetano about his passion for serving good food. Giovanni’s restaurant manager Massimo Fraioli, Executive Head Chef Gaetano Monteriso and Giovanni

What’s your background? I moved to London when I was eighteen years old - eleven years ago. I could not speak English. I’ve been in Cardiff for the last five months.

Where have you worked? La Trompette a French style Michelin Star restaurant in London, and The Square, which has two Stars, again in London.

Where does your love of cooking come from? My family. I used to wake up in the morning to the smell of my mother making a ragu sauce. We ate at the table as a family. It was a time to sit down together and talk. A time to share. A time of happiness. My uncle had a restaurant. It’s in the blood.

Which British chefs do you admire? Definitely Franco Taruschio of Walnut Tree fame. A real master.

Do you think the standard of cooking in this country is good? Definitely. There’s lots of potential to make Cardiff a gastronomic destination. We have the talent, we have fantastic Welsh produce, cheese, meats and vegetables.

You encourage children in your kitchen to learn the ropes? Yes, we’ve had many children here making pizzas. They are encouraged to roll the dough, build the pizza and place it in the pizza oven. Meeting children who enjoy good food and who like cooking makes me very happy as it reminds me of my own childhood at home.

Here, at Gio’s, we cook everything from scratch, using the very freshest ingredients. Every sauce is made from scratch. You can tell good ingredients are used in our food by the fantastic taste. That’s why customers keep coming back to us.

What’s it like working in a kitchen? Stressful and hot. Standards need to be set so tempers are flared. There’s a bit of bad language, but that comes with the territory.

Sunday lunch is always a treat if you choose the right pub. Having not partaken of the tradition for quite a while, we decide to take the family off to The Ivor Arms in Pontyclun after hearing some good reports on the pub lunch grapevine. What we found can only be described as...

SUNDAY BEST I must confess, the reason we’d stopped doing Sunday Lunch was because it had become, all to often, a very hit or miss affair. After several disappointments where poor service and sub-standard food had been the order of the day, I was not expecting great things.

Our first impression of The Ivor, as it’s affectionately known locally, was a pleasant one. Tasteful paintwork and signage greet you and the car park was reasonably busy but not overly so (and free of litter – always a good sign). We entered, passing the lounge bar where some locals were enjoying their Sunday pint while reading and chatting and were shown to our seats and offered some drinks and menus. Looking around, almost two thirds of the tables were booked and every so often a new party would arrive giving the place a nice buzz but without being noisy. Our order duly arrived and I have to say, the presentation was excellent – the meals certainly looked good enough to eat. We all tucked in. My lamb was unbelievably tender. Melt in the mouth would describe it perfectly. The vegetables were perfectly cooked and when I say cooked I don’t mean al dente which is, more often than not, chef speak for undercooked. Beautiful carrots, green beans, peas and cauliflower. No, this was perfect. Indeed, I was half way through my meal before I realised I hadn’t reached for the condiments – this meal was perfectly seasoned straight out of the kitchen.

I particularly liked the potatoes prepared three ways – a pleasant surprise (roast, rosti and boiled) and, thankfully, whoever had prepared the menu had resisted the urge to describe them as such. My wife had odered Leg of Duck which was so flavoursome. Perfectly crisp skin and beautifully moist meat. Our son was tucking in to the lamb and his cousin was munching his way enthusiastically through a slice of pork – both agreed the food was excellent. We had ordered child portions for them and, although they’re both twelve, the portions were more than adequate. This is probably a good point to mention their wine list. My wife likes a nice sauvignon and there are several on the list along with an intelligent selection of other whites and a good selection of reds. If you’re feeling in a celebratory mood, there are some sparkling wines and a Pol Roger champagne if you want to push the boat out. To be perfectly honest, at this point I was checking the prices on the blackboard. Usually, ingredients of this quality combined with cooking of this calibre would carry a much higher price tag. ❧ 14 ❧

We finished our mains wondering what the very subtle background heat was in the gravy but despite several requests to the waitress, chef was not giving up his secret. The gravy really was superb and might have accounted for the reason we didn’t have to season our food. We all agreed that, so far, the food had been excellent and decided to see if the desserts were just as good. We needn’t have had any doubts. Our son played it safe with some plain vanilla ice cream and his cousin tucked in to a gorgeous sticky toffee pudding – both were devoured leaving no trace. My wife chose the Pavlova which was in her own words ‘very naughty’. I went for the Strawberry Cheesecake with cream which was really quite delicious. We rounded the meal off with a couple of lattes. A very enjoyable lunch all round. All too often these days, Sunday Lunch just doesn’t cut the mustard. Conveyor belt, ping cuisine seems to be the norm but, thankfully, at The Ivor Arms this certainly isn’t the case. The food is, quite honestly, superb and just one mouthful tells you corners aren’t being cut. This is pub food at its very best and I would heartily recommend it without hesitation.

City Life caught up with artist and printmaker, Jason Davies. Jason D, as he’s known, has spent the past few years designing and printing an exclusive collection of floral canvas prints. They certainly display the...

WOW FACTOR What is your background? I went to University as a mature student to study a BA (Hons) Fine Art course at Cardiff, where I specialised in printmaking. I have always been selfemployed in creative businesses, but, importantly for me, I have made time to keep making and showing my art. I have recently returned to education, in order to complete my Masters Degree, and am now a full-time artist. Please describe your work They are bold colourful floral printed canvases made for the Home or Business interior. I see them as decorative accent pieces that make a style statement in any room. What inspires you? In the past it has been 1950s floral designs for their pattern, line and shapes. The flatness of colour in Andy Warhol's silkscreen prints. Currently, wild flowers in the landscape and prize flowershow arrangements. What are the price ranges? My limited edition canvas prints start at £95, going up to £250. Where can we see your work? You can visit me at Studio 3, Model House in Llantrisant, or you can view my work at www.jasondprints.com Who does your work appeal to? I like to think of my work as very accessible, fitting into most interior design projects: making a decorative design impact in the home; inspiration to help enhance the working environment; and as added Wow Factor to Lifestyle businesses.

City Life was privileged to catch up with Horace and Maureen Gamlin, founders and owners of Gamlin’s Music Centre in St Mary Street as they celebrated the 50th anniversary of Gamlin’s opening.

KEY OF G Both in their eighties, Maureen and Horace are still as passionate about their business today, as they were fifty years ago when they started. They are particularly proud that Gamlin’s has stood the test of time and survived where other businesses have been less fortunate. We talked to Horace about their incredible journey. How did you get into the music industry? My father was a piano tuner so I grew up having a keen ear for music. During the war, I would accompany him to concerts at the Empire Theatre in Cardiff where he was a duty tuner. I was a young child and I would collect autographs from the famous guest artists. At the age of fourteen I left school and took an apprenticeship as a piano tuner with Dale Forty & Company, a wellknown piano retailer in Cardiff. I was with them for nine years before working for two other companies. I was taught to tune, repair and recondition pianos by some of the most highly skilled tuners and craftsmen in the country.

In later years I was involved in a BBC radio show called Workers Playtime, for which I used to drive to the broadcast locations throughout Wales taking a piano with me for that particular programme and with Bert Wheedon playing the guitar. Fifty years is a big achievement how did it come about? After Maureen and I married, I set up my own workshop for tuning and repairing pianos. Somehow, I got known by local musicians for my skills and in 1960 we had become established enough for us to open a retail business in City Road. How have you kept up-to-date with the music industry? Well, pianos were always the focus of the business but as the pop music scene grew, we found that a whole new culture was exploding and having a strong influence on the youngsters in the sixties.

“We were the first shop in Wales to stock Fender guitars.”

It was a really defining moment in music history and we needed to respond to their needs, so we started stocking electric guitars, vox amplifiers, sheet music and other accessories, which we knew every budding pop star would need. In fact, we were the first shop in Wales to stock Fender guitars and supply the type of amplifiers used by the Shadows and the Beatles at that time. Within a couple of years of opening the shop we realised that we needed to separate the piano side of the business, so we acquired further space in order to extend our range of guitars, amps, PA’s and percussion instruments. After a few more moves and acquisitions we moved into the premises we occupy today in St. Mary Street. So it truly is a music centre? We like to describe it as a music department store as we now occupy three floors of retail space. It involved a lot of restoration work on the exterior for which we were nominated under the design category for the Lord Mayor’s Civic Awards in 1974 and modernisation inside. Now that Gamlin’s is under the stewardship of our son, Philip, we have specific departments for upright and grand pianos and electric keyboards; acoustic and electric guitars; percussion; brass and woodwind instruments, sheet music, amps and PA equipment.

Matt - Accoustic, electric and vintage stock

❧ 20 ❧

So what role does Philip play? As well as store manager, Philip attends many music fairs around the world. He looks after our international contacts and is a major asset to the business. Gamlin’s is in good hands.

Philip Gamlin

You and Maureen obviously work well together Yes we think so. With my technical knowledge and expertise and Maureen’s sales experience we make a great team. We have been consistent in our vision and passion for the business over the years and we have been lucky enough to be supported by a great team of staff, without whose specialist advice and technical assistance we would be lost. We’ve survived all these years because customers know that they are getting Mr and Mrs Gamlin – we are the owners and are here all the time. It’s our name above the door.

Are we allowed to ask if you have any celebrity musicians? Over the years the shop has been a popular meeting place for members of local groups and sometimes people just pop in to say “hello”. We’re going back a long way now, but past regulars have included a certain Tommy Scott who used to sing with the Senators, but you’d probably know him better as Tom Jones. Charlotte Church popped in the other week and her vocal coach Louise Ryan is a regular visitor here, and won’t mind me saying so.

“Past regulars have included a certain Tommy Scott who used to sing with the Senators, but you’d probably know him better as Tom Jones.” ❧ 21 ❧

Whether you define yourself as a rocker, a pop princess, slightly offbeat or a lover of anything from Beethoven to Chopin, Gamlin’s Music Centre is considered to be among the biggest of its kind in Britain. Occupying three floors of retail space, it really is a department store that caters for music fans from near and far. So, what can you expect to find at Gamlin’s? What can Gamlin’s offer you? ■ A full online shop, selling everything from instruments to sheet music and amps to tuning forks ■ Piano tuning ■ Delivery service ■ On-line advice ■ Ring and Reserve for those who have browsed on line but want to visit the store to purchase ■ Payment plans and rental scheme. Products and brands Stocking a full range of traditional instruments from guitars to secondhand and new pianos and the very latest products in the electronic field, Gamlin’s have selected well-known brands such as Fender, Vox, Gibson, Peavey, Blackstar, Weber, Yamaha and Kingsberg to name a few, with more details available on the website. Customers and service users From tiny tots wanting to play the recorder to children serious about learning a musical instrument, Gamlin’s recognise that musical tuition and the purchase of instruments can be an expensive investment, yet it may just be a phase within a child’s learning. To this end they offer a rental scheme whereby parents can spread the cost a good quality instrument in instalments, with the option of keeping it at the end of the term, or returning it sooner if the child does not acquire any real interest in music. Gamlin’s are also on hand to kit out school and college bands and orchestras and fledgling groups for their jam sessions, and for all musically proficient and talented professionals within all genres of music across Wales, the UK and worldwide. Working also with The Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music, Gamlin’s sees in excess of 3,000 candidates of all ages examined annually over three separate six week periods to test practical and theoretical proficiency.

Hair and beauty at Beauty Spot If you’re anything like me, trying a new stylist can be as worrying as a trip to the dentist. Will they cut it the way I like? Will the colour be right? Of late, I’ve shopped around and not been entirely happy, so when I stepped through the doors of Beauty Spot in Barry and spoke of my concerns, I wondered what to expect. Lisa, Beauty Spot’s co-owner suggested I try a cut and colour with Tracy, the new stylist. I felt confident as soon as we met, not least because of her years of experience in the industry, latterly at Gee and Hayes in Whitchurch. Tracy immediately gave me tips on how to remove product build-up and suggested that my dark brown colour could do with a lift. A cut and highlights to break up the colour later, Tracy even showed me different ways of styling the cut – even though it’s a short crop. Amazing! Tracy’s experience has already proved invaluable to the salon with her knowledge of cutting, restyling, colouring, foil highlights and lowlights, and perming.

“Amanda Morgan and Lisa Beynon have more than 27 years of experience between them.”

Amanda Morgan and Lisa Beynon, co-owners of Beauty Spot

Whilst sipping my coffee, reading the latest issue of OK, I glanced across at a woman in the throes of a manicure. Looking down at my own unpainted toenails, it made me want to make more of an effort and, how easy would that be with everything under one roof?

I picked up a leaflet and read that Amanda Morgan, owner, therapist and salon manager and therapist Lisa Beynon have more than 27 years of experience between them and offer a full range of treatments including permanent makeup, holistic therapies, fillers and cosmetic enhancements, glycolic peels, enzyme-lifting masks, St Tropez airbrush tanning, Bare Essentials mineral make-up and, new for autumn, Minx nails and Dermaroller. Next visit, I’ll allow enough time for the works!

I cannot think of a single occasion where flowers would not be gratefully received as a loving, symbolic gesture. Whether it’s the fragrance of an old-fashioned rose or just looking at an array of vibrant gerberas, I can’t help smile, and there isn’t a dull day that cannot be brightened by them even if it’s a single stem in a vase picked from the garden.

SAY IT WITH FLOWERS It is so rewarding to be able to make someone’s day more special with flowers, something that Hilary’s Four Seasons florist in Abergavenny is used to doing. “We love bringing a little joy into someone’s life,” explains owner Hilary Cooke who, together with her husband David and daughter Charlotte, has been running the business for the past five years. The family live in a village close to Abergavenny, which is ideal for the early starts that are common practice in the floristry business. It also means that David, who makes the flower deliveries, is familiar with the local territory, as home and office deliveries keep him busy. Their customers come from Cardiff, Swansea, Hereford and the Valleys for Interflora deliveries, gifts and bouquets for the home; and with a string of Interflora awards, gold medals and even the RHS Chelsea young florist of the year award won by Charlotte, it is no wonder that people travel from as far as the Midlands and London for their stunning floral arrangements.

To that end, Four Seasons has found a new niche within the Asian community. Asian weddings are big business and flowers, specifically, are of real significance, with lavish, vibrant displays and garlands. Hilary and the team are in their element here because this gives them opportunities to express their creativity with unique and stunning displays.

Hilary explains that it’s their passion and knowledge of floral design and their exacting attention to detail and quality that sees clients coming back for more. “We are a professional and creative bunch,” she says, “and we work really closely with them to make sure that their brief is met, particularly when designing for events and weddings.”

Flowers are a good omen in all wedding ceremonies, and Asian brides and grooms take it to another level to invoke good fortune and luck. Often the brides wear fresh flower garlands in their hair and on their wrists. For example, Hindu wedding ceremonies generally take place under a hooded canopy or ‘mandap’ with the bride and groom taking centre stage for many hours. Traditionally, the pillars and the canopy are adorned with flowers and garlands, creating a masterpiece within its own right. Flowers are literally the hallmark of Asian weddings which is a true reflection of their vibrant and diverse culture. The celebratory party that then follows creates a need for floral displays and arrangements on the tables, which gives Hilary and the staff even more scope for creating exquisite centrepieces. ❧ 29 ❧

Hilary always endeavours to source any exotic or special flower varieties required for the wedding theme, including seasonal flowers or traditional marigolds and roses. Looking to the future, Hilary, Charlotte and their two assistant florists Stacey and Kelly are excited about the potential for new creative ventures. Certainly they wish to expand their niche into the Asian wedding market; yet to continue serving the local community with innovative designs and cheerful flowers for everyday.

Why, you may ask, would a woman who can shop in total anonymity in the City Centre with dozens of shops at her disposal, want to venture further afield to buy her clothes?

LOTS TO LOVE ABOUT LOIS We’ve all watched the scene in Pretty Woman when a slightly dishevelled Julia Roberts gets snubbed in a fancy boutique, despite the fact she had the money to shop there. It’s no surprise, therefore, that the merits of boutique shopping have been dismissed by a majority of women who are all too dazzled by chain stores and giant shopping malls.

Ironically, it is this unfathomable and overwhelming choice of shops that has seen wise women rediscovering the personal touch offered by a new breed of small town boutiques. One person to be causing a stir is Sue Marshall, owner of Lois Boutique in Cowbridge. She knows exactly the right mix of ingredients that will make a style-conscious woman very happy. And she should know – she’s seen the business grow in strength; so much so, that the demand for a second boutique was only a matter of time.

Lois boutique now occupies two adjacent premises in the High Street in Cowbridge. The original shop had been serving customers for over thirty years under different ownership. When Sue opened the second sister boutique she knew she was trading on the back of a solid and growing reputation. It made sense to her to retain the shop’s original name but to give the two spaces a different ambience and offering. So, in a way that only someone with a background in merchandising could achieve, Sue has transformed the original, smaller shop at Number 27 into a modern quality shoe shop with popular, well crafted brands such as Reiker, Vandal and Cappalini. Added to the mix are a selection of bags, umbrellas and rainwear to offer a top-to-toe approach to styling women. The second, newer, boutique has been remodelled to allow garments to be showcased in their best light – a less is more approach, combined with a warmth that is evident as soon as you walk in the shop. It feels comfortable, not cutting edge or overly girlie and with the right hint of romantic touches in the fixtures and fittings. You can see the clothes easily, yet they are not so minimally displayed that you would be afraid to touch or ask for another size. You’re more exposed in a boutique sometimes people want to browse without the pressure of buying. Sue has ensured that her staff are friendly, yet respectful of the customers’ personal space. Lois stocks ranges from smart to casual, occasion to cruise wear. The emphasis is on style and contemporary fashion rather than blindly following short-term trends. ❧ 30 ❧

Here you’ll find designs from Frank Lyman, Gold by Michael H, Olsen, Fred Sabatier, Suzy Smith bags and jewellery by Gabby.

Sue has addressed the needs of curvier ladies with sizes 14 - 20 from label Personal Choice. Surprisingly, the Zele Polish Fair Trade brand has become popular and acknowledges the growing demand for responsibly sourced clothing. Sue’s success is down to a recipe of a few vital ingredients: ■ Staff work with confidence and are friendly without being pushy ■ Providing quality and unique garments for women who want timeless yet fashionable pieces, i.e. not a jack of all trades ■ An understanding of real women, their shape and style choices ■ That remembering and attending to the regular customers and embracing new ones is a balancing act that seems to happen seamlessly. Add to this the promise of a lovely day out in the Vale of Glamorgan. Here you can explore the landscape, independent shops, bars, eateries, hair and beauty salons, book and antique shops. I don’t know about you, but I’d trade a network of underground car parks and city centre crowds to amble a market town with free parking any day. ESSENTIALLY HAWKES Dare I say, the recent cult television programme Mad Men has given us a glimpse back to the days when men were self-assured and wore their city clothes with quiet elegance. It was an age where the pocket square was proudly displayed, men’s fingernails were clean and their shoes were solid and shiny. Great news then, that traditional norms for dressing men are making a comeback. This particular designer specialises in contemporary styling with a more relaxed fit and finish than typical of a traditional Saville Row tailor. Russell still maintains that nothing beats classic British tailoring, but today’s man wants to ring the changes with suits that reflect their individuality, personality and ever-changing lifestyles. Hawkes Essentials offers the full Gresham Blake bespoke and made-to-measure service which has a growing A List celebrity following and is set to be big this autumn.

He and his staff are there to help anyone who feels sartorially challenged and Russell believes that men are never more than a few basic items away from being stylish and well-dressed. For the man who needs to be suited and booted, look no further than good tailoring. You can be assured of good quality off-the-peg suiting at Hawkes that can be altered to give a great fit. Any man who wants to stand out from the crowd will probably want to go for bespoke tailoring which allows for more of a free reign when it comes to detailing like lapels, colour of lining, stitching and button holes. Russell says that a discerning eye can spot the quality of a suit just by the way it falls and drapes.

Of course, Russell recognises that the biggest problem men face, is knowing how to fulfil the ‘smart casual’ dress code. As he explains, “It’s a real black hole in styling terms and is the trickiest to pull off as it involves a bit more creativity. In addition, men want to look different when they leave the office and often fall short on the casual and leisure wear.” This is where Hawkes Essentials satisfy the needs of any man wanting to ring the changes or those wanting to maintain a sense of timeless casual style, yet with that urban edge. They champion a gentleman’s right to express his individuality by stocking quality labels such as Matinique, Sand, Grenson, Milena, Gibson, Boateng, Camel Active and Remus Uomo to name a few.

Right now, the team are really excited about the recent introduction of designer suits by the innovative and creative designer Gresham Blake – one of the hottest names in tailoring for men and women.

Whether men are looking for a formal or more relaxed look, Russell emphasises that it is essential they accessorise with good quality belts, shoes and socks. ❧ 34 ❧

“It’s the smallest details that appeal to our customers to ensure an effortless yet groomed look.” If all this sounds a bit too fanciful, then rest assured there is nothing intimidating about Hawkes Essentials or the brands they sell. Russell is quick to point out that they are there to help anyone who prefers unhurried and individual service that is all too lacking in high street stores. There is no one-size-fits-all approach here; instead you will find a team who are willing to spend time with you, ensuring that you invest in something that will look good for a long time. Plus, anyone who is worried that setting foot in an independent men’s boutique will render them a slave to fashion, then fear not; Hawkes Essentials literally sells ‘the essentials’ outstanding quality tailoring and clothing at a range of prices, shirts, ties, shoes and accessories. Russell likes to keep things simple wearable clothes that can be worn with a little individuality and labels that separate you from the crowd without you becoming a designer clothes horse. And his final top tip – a good quality coat and a trilby or fedora if you dare! Hawkes Essentials 37-39 Morgan Arcade Cardiff CF10 1AF 029 2037 3780 www.hawkesessentials.com

City of Arcades best describes Cardiff’s rich legacy of Victorian and Edwardian shopping and architecture. You only have to amble through Cardiff’s oldest Royal Arcade to get a sense of the 19th-century genteel.

Nowadays the combined network of all Cardiff’s covered arcades makes it the largest in Britain and provides some of the best specialist and independent stores in the city. In the mid-19th-century The Royal Arcade and The Morgan Arcade were built to connect The Hayes and St Mary Street in an attempt to increase the number of shops available to the local people and each running parallel to each other; they were later followed by the Castle, Duke Street, High Street and Wyndham Arcades. The city’s many arcades are firm favourites with visitors and tourists alike who choose to explore the parts of the city that are rich in history and architectural design.

“You’ll find an eclectic mix of old and contemporary with stores selling everything from stationery, art and fashion to jewellery, welsh crafts, food and homeware.”

IN ARCADIA In fact, their historical setting only adds to the unique shopping experience. Each arcade has its own personality and point of difference and they have in turn managed to retain their period features, some with the original shop fronts intact. Even if spending isn’t on your agenda, you can’t fail to marvel at the timelessness of it all.

You’ll find an eclectic mix of old and contemporary with stores selling everything from stationery, art and fashion to jewellery, welsh crafts, food and homeware. It’s a shopper’s paradise and the arcades provide some of the best selection of shops and businesses in the city, especially if you are looking for something individual and unusual.

Shoppers visit for a peaceful shopping experience, to escape the crowds and harshness of the modern city landscape. It’s reassuring that some businesses have traded there for many years, whereas others in the High Street have been a flash in the pan. Cardiffians should be proud that the arcades have stood the test of time, but don’t take our word for it – take a few minutes to change your route and refamiliarise yourself with the city’s past heritage – we think you’ll be pleasantly surprised.

The lost art of letter writing How have we lost the art of letterwriting? As a youngster I was taught that the pen is mightier than the sword.

The Pen and Paper Sationery Company Wendy Bottrill, seen here with Cheryl Carr, Pen Consultant, is passionate about paper, pens and good old fashioned stationery. Stockists of professional art supplies, quality notepaper, luxury Moleskine notebooks, craft paper or the perfect self-defining fountain pen and coloured ink, discounts for students are available and a selection of writing instruments from Parker, Cross, Waterman, Sheaffer and Visconti provide the perfect gift for anyone who appreciates the power and sentiment of the written word.

In novels by Jane Austen I learned that one scribed a message to a loved one and when I left home, nothing provided an antidote to homesickness as much as a letter from my parents telling me their news. We stored love letters tied in ribbon, and it was polite to send a note to thank your host for dinner or a dear friend for your birthday gift. To live in a paperless society would be my worst nightmare for how can you replace the feel of the pages of a book? Fountain pens assume the personality of their owners – your handwriting is defined by its shape and feel, and god forbid anyone who borrows it, as the nib performs to your own will only, and to no one else’s - a bit like Harry Potter’s wand!

The Castle, Duke and High Street Arcades can be found at the lower, castle end of St. Mary Street. Together, they form a trio of interlinking covered shopping arcades that in Victorian and Edwardian times were the life blood of Cardiff’s retail economy. Nowadays, these Grade II listed buildings provide the shopping fraternity with shelter and sanctuary from the outside elements and offer the reward of some interesting, one-off independent shops, worthy of perusing for something that little bit different. The High Street Arcade which forks and divides into the Duke Street Arcade. runs from St. John Street to High Street. A quick minute of open air strolling

leads you to the opposite side and into the Castle Arcade. This delightful labyrinth of shops is a ‘must visit’ destination for visitors and tourists and it is the pride and joy of the local people’s heritage. Each arcade has its own sense of character and the camaraderie among shop owners and traders makes them like micro communities within their own right. If it’s fashion, bridal wear, fancy dress, shoes and a quick snack you are after, then the High Street Arcade might be your first stop to check out some individual clothing and accessories. A hop, skip and a jump away is the Castle Arcade where you’ll find food, eateries, cafés, hair salons and some quirky little shops not available elsewhere in the city centre.

“Each arcade has its own sense of character which makes them like micro communities.” Even more interesting is the gallery level in the Castle Arcade which provides a second floor of shops and offices. In all seriousness, you could while away a whole day ambling through Cardiff’s arcade network by chatting to proud shop owners, relaxing over a coffee and generally feeling pleased with your special purchases. City Life loves them and we think you will too.

I don’t know about you, but when it comes to fine jewellery, I’m a bit of a novice. I’ve always found fine jewellery a little bit too serious which is why I’ve received most of it as a gift rather than buying it myself. Don’t get me wrong, it’s lovely, but I know what I like – shiny precious metals, big gems and bold fine pieces that demand attention.

Jack Cohen

THE PERFECT SETTING Jewellery is back with a vengeance. I’m not talking here of cheap and cheerful ‘mix and match with every outfit’ jewellery, but rocks, gems and classic timeless pieces. Faking it til you make it, is fine to a limit; I have my own collection of imitation sparkly accoutrements, but nothing feels as good as when I wear the real thing – it’s like adorning yourself with cashmere instead of lambswool - you never want to take it off. Fashion trends of recent years have seen women shy away from silver and gold in preference of a frivolous mix of colourful and readily available costume jewellery. This has been, in part, due to TV makeover programmes and the economic downturn which has created a different attitude to jewellery.

“Jewellery, in its proper sense, has made a huge comeback...

Yet, as any style conscious person knows, trends come and go and it was only a matter of time before jewellery, in its proper sense ,made a huge comeback. That time is now! No one knows this better than Jack Cohen and Deborah Rawle of David Edwards Jewellers in Cardiff’s Royal Arcade. Content in the knowledge that precious metals and gems will never date, their confidence is borne out of their combined 50 years experience and the solid reputation on which David Edwards Jeweller trades.

The shop and private offices are traditional in the way you might expect of a jeweller in a Victorian arcade; wood panelling, regency style chairs, mahogany desks and subdued colours. It is reassuring to know that in spite of the newer and more modern class of jewellers, David Edwards have remained steadfast in their own style. Don’t let this fool you though, as you can be assured of friendly, unstuffy and knowledgeable service that will make you feel at ease the minute you walk through the door. So, is this the type of jewellers that you can browse without feeling awkward or obliged to buy? The answer is a resounding ‘yes’. Jack and Deborah realise that some people are understandably quite nervous about buying gems and gold, either due to a lack of knowledge or because pieces tend to come with a heftier price tag than fashion jewellery. What’s a novice to do? Firstly, find out whether you have any old or unworn pieces of jewellery lurking in your drawers that could be sold or remodelled. This way you could invest in a new piece or have an existing piece redesigned to make it look more contemporary. If you hanker after something with a sense of history then have a look at some of the beautiful second hand and vintage pieces on offer there.

“The shop and private offices are traditional in the way you might expect of a jeweller in a Victorian arcade; wood panelling, regency style chairs, mahogany desks.”

Gold and silver is making a big comeback in fashion terms and customers realise that jewellery is a lasting investment purchase that will stand the test of time rather than being just a fickle trend. There is no need to be so serious about fine jewellery which is why today’s trend is for striking, fun pieces that make it more accessible and appealing. And, for anyone in doubt, diamonds really are a girl’s best friend - why else would Jack and Deborah seek out unique designs and diamonds of the highest quality and grading to add to their large collection of precious gems and pearls.

“If you hanker after something with a sense of history then have a look at some of the beautiful second hand and vintage pieces on offer there.” Secondly, work out how much you are prepared to spend and what style you prefer. Perhaps you like classic, dainty bracelets and diamond stud earrings; or maybe bold rocks, stones and statement pieces are the mainstay of your jewellery box. Whatever your style, the team at David Edwards will be happy to talk through your options and help you find some truly exquisite jewellery that will becomes your signature piece. They are there to explain, inform and educate.

Whether you’re looking for bracelets, a necklace, earrings or rings, there is something there to suit all tastes and budgets. The trick is to buy something that suits you, your personality and your pocket; then wear it and love it.

“Invest in a new piece or have an existing piece redesigned to make it look more contemporary.” Talking to the converted is a different matter, as fans of fine jewellery will appreciate the importance of skilled craftsmen, registered valuations and quality graded gems and precious metals. They recognise the significance of passing heirloom pieces through the family and the meaning or sentiment that they carry. ❧ 43 ❧

CITY BUSINESS A round up of news in and around Cardiff

PENARTH

The Queen B celebrates first anniversary When do you know you’ve got a good business? When customers are queuing at the door to get in. That’s certainly been the case for The Queen B, in Penarth. Jodie Tanner and her knowledgeable and friendly staff have certainly found the right ingredients to make women happy – shoes, boots, bags and bling. What’s more, even though they look like designer brands, the price tags don’t reflect this. The Queen B is celebrating its first year in business. If you’ve not been to update your autumn wardrobe, then what are you waiting for? 8 Washington Buildings, Stanwell Road Penarth CF64 2AD 029 2071 1100 www.thequeenb.co.uk S O U T H WA L E S

Technology that saves you money We all want to save money on our energy bills and the buzzword of the moment is solar energy. But why should we go solar? Well, it’s renewable, environmentally friendly and reliable. It makes no noise and, perhaps most importantly, it’s cheaper than buying from the power company. City Life talks to Caroline Summers, Sales Support Coordinator for Southern Solar on the growth of solar energy systems and the business. When was the company set up? In 2002 and since then the company has grown to include four regional bases – Sussex, London, Bristol and Hereford. The South Wales office was established in April 2010. All branches specialise in the specification and installation of solar thermal and solar electric systems, providing a high quality service to domestic, commercial and public sector clients. “Out of 14 solar companies tested... just one company, Southern Solar – was worthy of a mention for its helpful and sensible approach.” Which? 2010

What types of buildings are suitable? We have added solar technology to many different types of building including blocks of flats, multiple house projects, schools, care homes and sheltered housing units, as well as retrofitting existing housing stock. To-date we have worked on projects ranging from small domestic (£5k) to large commercial (£170k) on one site and our largest project was £450k for Bron Afon Housing Association in 2009 which involved project managing installations across 21 sites within a six week timescale. One of the first jobs the Welsh branch undertook was the recent DIY SOS Big Build TV programme at a property in Brynmawr. ❧ 46 ❧

Do you see the market growing? We think the Welsh domestic market has huge potential due to the Feed in Tariff; with the opportunity to turn your household roof into your own power station and get paid for generating your own electricity. The Welsh public sector is also a key area for us as we look to combat fuel poverty and make the transition towards a low carbon society, reducing the reliance on fossil fuels through solar. If you’ve ever thought about starting your own business and been put off by the thought of all those start-up costs and signing scarily long, expensive leases, think again. Despite more businesses than most failing in their early years, especially in these uncertain times, how can you ensure your fledgling enterprise doesn’t falter at the first hurdle.

LIVE THE DREAM The absolute and possibly unsettling truth is you can’t! Many businesses fail in the first year for a variety of reasons and, depending on who you talk to, that figure varies from a reasonably optimistic 50% to a worryingly pessimistic 75% and don’t even think about opening a bar – the failure rate is in excess of 85%. So what, if anything, can you do to minimise the risk?

First, don’t consider starting a business without doing your research. Know your business, know your market and know who your competitors are. I was in Cowbridge recently and was walking into one of my regular haunts for a coffee and noticed a chap I know who owns a few businesses in Cardiff. He was still there an hour later when I came out, so I went over and asked him how he was and what had brought him to Cowbridge. He explained that he was considering opening a business in Cowbridge and was watching footfall. He said this was the third day he’d been in town and he’d probably come back a further three or four times to get the information he wanted. This is a guy who’s very successful but he knew that rather than just guess, he’d find out first hand. When I asked him had his exercise been useful thus far, he said it had been a real eye-opener and he’d go away and consider what he’d learned.

The number of businesses I’ve coached and talked to over the years who’ve undertaken this level of research is less than a third – staggering really when you consider that the knowledge gained can make or break a business.

James Mason, The Business Centre Manager, (pictured right) says that he’s even had enquiries from a number of companies wanting to open retail units there – anything is possible in this flexible business environment.

Let’s assume for a moment that you have established that there is a market for your product or service. The next major considerations are start-up costs and overheads. How much is it going to cost to start-up? Will there be legal fees? Accountancy fees? What’s the rent going to cost? How much will heating and lighting cost? How much are the rates? Are there water rates? How much will it cost for a phone or a phone system? Where will I sit? What will I sit on? Computer? Business stationery? I was going to write will you need a website? Stupid question – no-one does business without a website these days (although many do business with awful ones – we’ll discuss that in a future issue). Anyway, you get the picture.

So what’s so good about this kind of serviced set-up. Firstly, there are minimum set-up costs. You can move into a private space complete with desk, seating and phone system with no capital outlay. You pay a monthly fee for your space which includes rent, rates, water, heat and light and seperately for your calls and any other services you use.

There’s a lot to consider and the best way to start a new business is... to start with as little cost as possible and this is why The Business Centre is certainly worth considering. The Business Centre is basically a serviced facility. I’m reluctant to say serviced office because many types of business work out of there. In fact, as we go to press, there are currently 75 ranging from sole traders to limited companies. And the range of businesses is interesting too – there’s a beauty salon, a print buyer, a logistics company, charities and a vehicle leasing company.

“The Business Centre... you just take on what you need when you need it.” ❧ 48 ❧

If business goes well you can consider moving to a larger space. If you do and business slows down, you can contract. If the business doesn’t work out, you can walk away (assuming you’ve paid your bills). The worse thing for anyone failing in business is paying back business debts on top of the sadness and misery of a shattered dream. There are other benefits too. There’s plenty of free parking. That’s good for you and your visitors. It’s conveniently located – junction 32 of the M4 is around fifteen minutes away as is Cardiff Bay. There are meeting and conference rooms with IT facilities you can hire by the hour. Again, no capital outlay – just pay as you use. You’ll also have a reception facility included in your monthly fee which will ensure you’ll appear and sound professional. There’s even a café on site where you can have a coffee or a light lunch. There are other breakout areas too with comfortable contemporary sofas where you can relax or hold informal meetings. The Business Centre also has links to separate storage facilities so, if buying and selling is your business, you don’t have to lease a warehouse or unit, you just take on what you need when you need it.

There’s always something happening in the historic market town of Cowbridge. What is truly lovely is the energy and warmth of community spirit that makes this somewhere you want to spend time.

Whether it’s the traditional values of good, honest customer service, the charm and appeal of the period architecture or the twice monthly Farmers’ Market, one thing is sure, Cowbridge has a rare quality that is sadly lacking in big cities. Some people believe that Cowbridge is aspirational, but really it has something for everyone and embraces visitors and locals alike.

“Cowbridge has a rare quality... it really has something for everyone and embraces visitors and locals alike.”

COWBRIDGE Shopping and eating is a big focus, but a little known point of interest is the tranquil and stunning Physic Garden which provides sanctuary to weary shoppers, garden lovers and workers.

People with insufficient time in the week can take heart, as shops will open every Sunday from 19th September – an additional service that is welcomed and supported by anyone wanting to get out of the city madness. The autumn and winter months see Cowbridge at its best and the town is already buzzing in anticipation of forthcoming events. First off is a classical music event from 15th October, followed by the popular Cowbridge Fashion Week, with main fashion events running from Thursday 21st to Saturday 23rd October.

Culinary experts will be on hand for the weekend 29th to 31st October for the now famous Food and Drink Festival which provides food lovers with a host of produce and delicious goodies to sample. The town comes alive on the last Sunday of November for the magical Reindeer and Santa event, with families and children getting into the Christmas spirit.

This is closely followed by a late night shopping extravaganza on 2nd December when retailers will be offering discounts, drinks and nibbles by candlelight, all to the sound of a choir. Excited? Look out for details in town or visit the website. www.cowbridge.co.uk

Meeting over the perfect cup of coffee with friends during the day or for cocktails on a night out calls for just the right environment and, thanks to Giovanni Malacrino, our prayers have been answered in the shape of his new lounge bar and club Amici, a sophisticated playground in the heart of Cardiff.

AMORE AMICI

Giovanni, congratulations on the launch of Amici. How’s it going? Very well, thank you. It was a bit fraught during the building works and with running the two restaurants, but I’m very happy with how it’s turned out. It looks just as I imagined and our customers seem to like it.

What can customers expect? By day it’s a great place to meet for coffee and croissants. Ladies might be out shopping and fancy lunch, perhaps an Italian style tapas or just a break between boutiques with a chilled glass of wine. We have many professional people who use Amici’s for that all important business meeting. In the evening, the mood changes. Customers can enjoy a classic cocktail after work. Perhaps meet some friends for a pre or aftershow drink or just simply unwind with fine champagne and great chill out music. Thursdays we have live jazz, and Friday and Saturday, there’s an exclusive club with top DJ’s where customers can relax or dance until the small hours. Who are your customers? In the daytime, they can be ladies who lunch, business people, couples or single people looking to escape the madness of the city. As the night unfolds, we see couples and groups of friends looking to enjoy a night out in a safe and sophisticated environment. The impressive long bar lights up and comes to life while our guests enjoy the sounds of the resident DJ. No house music can be found here but good, honest soul, disco and Motown.

What can you offer to corporate and businesspeople? We have a projector to display company logos, branding and messages as clients enter the stairway. We also have the latest big screen TV’s displaying the news and there’s also a WI-FI connection. The area is divided into different ‘zones’. Please describe them. I believe that people like their own ‘areas’ in which they can enjoy the company of their friends or acquaintances. We have one area with a sunken table, another with leather sofas and tables, and an exclusive area for members with a cabinet of their own champagne. We also have a lobster tank and a wine cellar with vintage wines and champagnes. Speaking of memberships, how do they work? Full details of the memberships are available on the website. We all need a good night out once in a while but how do we know which venue to choose? If it’s consistently good food, service and ambience you’re after, then by choosing one of four venues within the Chameleon Group, you won’t go far wrong. City Life talked to Sian Rachel Gunney, Marketing Manager of the Group to find out more.

LOUNGE LIVING What is the Chameleon Group? It’s a young, dynamic, independently owned and operated group that consists of four very unique venues within the cosmopolitan City of Cardiff. What are the venues? The North Star - a converted Victorian pub on North Road, Cardiff. Here you’ll find a boutique conversion offering a huge open heated courtyard, drinks lounge, live music stage and an open kitchen serving exquisite food made from only fresh ingredients. Customers come in their droves, especially on a Sunday for our hearty roast dinners accompanied by soothing acoustic music. Breakfast, always a popular offering is served all day Saturday and Sunday from 12pm. The Mocka Lounge is perfectly located in Cardiff’s Café Quarter on Mill Lane and is an ideal choice for coffee and a light bite after a hard day’s shopping. As the night draws in, Mocka comes to life with smooth sounds and cocktails. The Vulcan Lounge is a beautiful, relaxed, student friendly lounge, café and bar, serving gastro pub food at student prices and our boutique nightclub Crystal is designed to cater for those searching for a discreet and private haven in which to enjoy the simple pleasures of good music, sublime drinks and great company. We have four unique venues to suit all tastes, of which we’re very proud.

What’s so special them? With each and every venue, we have tried to break the mould of what people expect and receive when they visit. Whether it’s a private event, corporate function, or simply a drink or a meal where you expect the best for your guests, your company or your friends and family, our venues tick all of the boxes when it comes to quality of food, service and atmosphere. What events can be catered for? Festive corporate events, product launches, birthdays and private parties, aftershow parties, business lunches and corporate presentations. Full details can be found on each venue’s website.

Juboraj, Café Quarter, Mill Lane, is part of the award winning Juboraj Group of Restaurants. For over twenty years the Juboraj Group have been serving some of the finest Indian and Bangladeshi cuisine to be found in Cardiff and Newport. Their experienced chefs manage to suffuse the modern with the traditional, bringing you some of the best flavours the Indian sub-continent has to offer.

SO MUCH MORE The Café Quarter and Hayes areas of Cardiff Centre, have undergone a phenomenal multi-million pound transformation over the last few years. Mill Lane itself has been completely renovated and is now home to a multitude of high quality restaurants catering to every pallet. There is no doubt that when it comes to eating out this is the place to be. Now with a fresh new management structure in place, the Café Quarter Juboraj has undergone it’s own transformation. New exterior and interior design and refurbishment along with a fresh approach to customer service and a revitalised menu, containing traditional and contemporary dishes all made with the highest quality ingredients, has breathed new life into what was already the City Centre’s best loved Indian Restaurant.

Start with a golden Aloo Chat, diced boiled potatoes served in a rich sauce with fresh coriander or maybe a delicately spiced Shami Kebab. Follow it with a renowned Juboraj speciality of sensationally spicy Chicken Kholapuri masterfully prepared with turmeric, cumin, coriander and fresh green chillies or perhaps a traditional Northern Indian delicacy, Karahi, a rich dish cooked with exotic herbs and spices served on a sizzling karahi cast iron wok. Many of the dishes on offer are Juboraj originals, often copied by others. One such dish, the Jamdhani Haash, a whole breast of tender duckling gently cooked in light spices, honey and lime juice giving an exquisite taste, was made famous as Nessa’s favourite dish in the BBC’s Gavin and Stacey. Ruth Jones, who plays Nessa and co-writes the show, is a regular diner at the Juboraj.

With an extensive wine list, irresistible desserts and high quality coffee’s and liqueurs you can be sure that you’ll experience one of the best the Café Quarter has to offer at the Juboraj. The restaurant in Mill Lane offers a full takeaway service as well as a home delivery service that covers the CF10 and CF11 areas of Cardiff. Whether you are looking for an unforgettable meal with friends and family or an intimate meal for two where you can relax in the comfortable and intimate surroundings, you can be assured that your time spent at the Juboraj will be one of pure indulgence and one you will definitely want to enjoy time and time again.

THAN CURRY

“Time spent at the Juboraj will be one of pure indulgence.”

As a youngster, I spent many a weekend trailing around garden centres with my parents who were keen garden lovers. Fortunately I inherited their passion for nature and all things botanical, yet at times I confess to having been a little bored. Nowadays, however, a new breed of garden centre, such as Pugh’s Garden Village in Radyr, are entertaining and inspiring people of all ages, including budding infant horticulturists.

NATURE NURTURE Pugh’s is located minutes from the A470 between Cardiff and the Valleys and Junction 32 of the M4, yet the surrounding countryside and beautiful views of the fairytale Castell Coch are enough to encourage even novice gardeners. With over sixty years in the business and forty of those based in Radyr, Pugh’s are experts in their field.

Dog owners can pop to Pugh’s and check their pooch in to Barkers Groomers who offer a full grooming service for their beloved doggies. Marilyn Bowden from Barkers says, “We provide a friendly, reliable and caring service for small and medium sized dogs and have many satisfied customers. We’re hoping to expand shortly to provide a grooming service for larger dogs.”

More of a destination for all manner of shopping needs, they recognise that the garden has become an extended part of the home, rather than being apart from it. Lifestyles have changed and pastime activities are more interconnected than ever before. It makes sense then to provide a range of products, services and standalone businesses under one roof that focus on the home, garden and outdoor living.

With the animals tended to, it’s time for you to take the weight off your feet and indulge in a slice of cake, a cup oftea or a selection of snacks and meals at The Bay Tree café which will provide a welcome retreat before considering your next move. I’d suggest the fabulous Ty Nant Farm Shop. Here you will find a variety of fresh produce, delicious breads, Welsh food products, cheeses and delicatessen treats.

Take advantage of the pick and mix selection of frozen seasonal foods such as fruits, berries, roasted vegetables and breakfast pastries. With Christmas only a few months away, make a note to order your festive hampers, meat and poultry from the shop.

“Easy access from the M4 and central Cardiff.”

Talking of the great outdoors; at the risk of generalising a little here, most people who appreciate the garden and forces of nature may also keep pets, whether that be the four-legged ‘walkies’ variety or a less high maintenance goldfish. Pugh’s Garden Village plays host to Maidenhead Aquatics, specialists in tropical and marine fish. Alex James says, “Being based at Pugh’s in Radyr offers our customers some of the finest aquatic facilities in Wales with easy access from the M4 and central Cardiff.” So, now to the garden. As anyone with green fingers will know, the end of summer is not the end of the gardening season; on the contrary, it is the beginning. Tasks need to be undertaken before winter truly sets in and that’s where Pugh’s friendly and knowledgeable staff can help; they can advise and answer your questions on plant and shrub care and preparing your garden for the spring. For instance, to guarantee a spectacular show of blooms from January through to April, you need to plant springflowering bulbs in the autumn. ❧ 62 ❧

“The end of summer is not the end of the gardening season.”

If you’re intent on keeping warm indoors, then it’s worth visiting the Heatforce renewable energy show room at Pugh’s Garden Village. Paul Thomas from Heatforce says, “We offer green technology as an efficient and environmentally friendly way to heat your home and provide hot water. There is an increasing demand from customers for renewable heating technologies and we support that.”

Top tips from Pugh’s for this autumn ■ Care for wild birds with their

selection of nuts, seeds and feeders ■ Clean up garden debris ■ Protect roses and delicate shrubs

from the frost ■ Divide perennials ■ Collect and save seeds from plants.

For anyone reluctant to give up al fresco dining, Pugh’s also stock a range of chimeneas, barbecues and outdoor lights for a cosy glow during cooler autumn evenings. Perfect for atmospheric Halloween and Bonfire parties.

“The garden has become an extended part of the home.”

Whether it’s gifts, pots, plants, pets or winter pansies with their smiley little faces, gardening certainly seems to have taken on a new meaning and Pugh’s has got it covered.

When Cardiff Bay dentists Peter and Mary Murray were planning their extension, they sought the design and build expertise of Cowbridge based kitchen and interiors company Room For Living to create their dream kitchen.

DESIGNED FOR LIFE We asked Mary what led her to choose Room for Living I had visited one other kitchen company in Cardiff (who didn’t even get back to me) and it was whilst visiting Cowbridge one day, I popped into the Room for Living showroom where I was introduced to Jo Buckerfield, one of the company’s designers. I was very impressed and so, the next day, I took my husband Pete along to meet them.

What was it about Jo that you liked? Her manner and customer approach was outstanding and she seemed genuinely enthusiastic about the project. Did you have an idea of how you wanted your kitchen to look? After much thought, Pete and I decided on a modern kitchen rather than a traditional country kitchen, as we both wanted a very clean look with ultra modern appliances. We had a rough idea as to the look and layout we wanted and together came up with a basic brief and then left it all to Jo. She came up with a couple of plans and we chose the one we liked. There was no fuss and Jo helped us to choose the worktop and floor tiles. Are you pleased with the end result? Our kitchen looks even better than the computer images Jo produced and the whole family is delighted with the outcome.

“We now spend the whole time in the kitchen and the cinema room which leads directly off from it.”

How does the new kitchen fit into the extension? We have had a courtyard amalgamated into the house. Using this and our old kitchen area gives us a whole new space. The architect was Sion Williams from Kotzmuth and Williams. We wanted the kitchen to be the hub of the household and for our other rooms to flow from there.

How do you use your new kitchen? We now spend the whole time there and in the cinema room which leads directly off from it. The kitchen is great to cook in as it flows so well. Room for Living recommended Miele appliances and even offered us the chance to attend a course to learn how to use the oven and steam oven to their full capabilities, which was really useful! How long did the extension process take? The builders were on site for nine months and they have been incredible. We used Michael Coxe from Northrise and would thoroughly recommend him. You seem to be lucky with your choice of companies working on the project? Yes, we have, especially when you hear nightmare stories of projects taking much longer than they should and things going wrong. The whole job has gone smoothly and the team from Room for Living have been superb. Their customer care has been truly outstanding. THE LAST WORD Julie Perkins is Director of Jewels Canley Interiors on Whitchurch Road. City Life persuaded the self confessed workaholic and Eastenders fan to down tools for ten minutes. What do you like about working in Whitchurch Road? It’s got every type of shop you could imagine and is very accessible. It’s one of those places people tend to find by accident but are pleasantly surprised when they do. Do you live locally? I live in a farmhouse in a small hamlet called Picketston in the Vale of Glamorgan. What do you like to do in your downtime? I must confess to being a workaholic but enjoy chilling out with a glass of G & T or a nice glass of red while watching Eastenders (if I get home in time!). I also like to work on my own home. What’s your favourite restaurant? The Mughal Emperor on the outskirts of Cowbridge - for its lovely Bangladeshi and Indian food. Lovely people and I love the decor! How’s business? Very good. This is our busiest time of the year leading up to Christmas so, happily, lots of overtime! Where do the majority of your customers come from? We do a lot of business in the Cardiff area and I seem to be in Penarth quite a bit these days plus the rest of the Vale.

Whose involved in the business? Both my daughters - Candice and Hayley, and my husband Jim. Candice deals with most of the admin and customers on the phone. Hayley looks after clients in the shop, helping with room designs and also likes to dabble in furniture design.

It’s a great shame that Maskreys is closing just down the road, how do you feel about that? It was a huge shock and really quite sad, I know a lot of people that work there as we have done work for them for many years. I suppose we will gain customers because of it but I can’t help thinking Cardiff has lost an institution.

Jim runs the woodwork workshop which is in one of our buildings at home, making pelmets, headboards, footstools and any odd thing I need! Then there’s our workroom staff, upholsterers Chris and Kevin and our sewing machinists Dawn and Christina. We have a great team. What services do you offer? You name I'll do it! (laughs). Reupholstery, curtain making, blinds, track fitting (including electric), bespoke sofas and chairs, bespoke radiator covers, carpet fitting and decorating. All of which we provide as individual services or as a complete interior design package which I project manage. You’ve recently undertaken a revamp, how’s that changed the business? We’ve had a really good response to the new frontage - everyone loves my topiary balls! We’ve certainly enjoyed much more passing trade as we stand out a lot more than before. ❧ 66 ❧
