We are not a large publishing group pretending to be home grown. City Life magazine is written, designed and printed in Cardiff for the people of Cardiff. Our philosophy We are committed to quality. WELCOME

Autumn is a time of change and, personally, my favourite season. As I write this, we’re about to move into our new production offices and we can’t wait. It’s nothing flash. Just two rooms for now but it’s a big leap for us. While working from home has had its advantages - like being able to work in your onesie (I’m not ashamed to admit it!), and not having to apply the warpaint every day (still holding my hand up!), the downsides are that there’s always washing to put in the machine, always a floor to be mopped and always a pot of stew on the go to feed the hungry workers (not that I mind but I am busy you know guys!). We are looking for more salespeople to join our team. If you’re looking for rewarding sales career and have experience in media and advertising in either magazines, newspapers or radio, then we have plenty of opportunities for you. Please send your CV to jennifer@ goodlifepublishing.co.uk

They are run by real people, not big, corporate chains and most of the money they take is reinvested in Cardiff in the local community. They deserve your support.

Penarth Fashion Week is shaping up really nicely. We’re so thrilled to have been chosen as the sole media sponsor for this event, which I’m sure will be a huge success and one which will grow year on year, and will bring additional focus on the vibrant seaside town.

If you want to promote what you do in our winter issue, please get in touch, we’d love to help you in our own inimitable way. Speak soon. Jennifer Hobbs-Roberts Editor 07766 106 701 jennifer@goodlifepublishing.co.uk uk.linkedin.com/in/jenniferhobbsroberts

The curtain is closing on Summer and the colder months approach, we may as well enjoy the cold so if you’re planning a skiing holiday and want to brush up those slope skills then we may have the place for you… Cardiff Ski & Snowboard Centre in Fairwater has everything you need to get you up to speed, it’s never too late to pick up a new hobby after all.

THE WHITE STUFF

The home of Snowsport Wales, and one of the most well established ski slopes in the UK, Cardiff Ski and Snowboard Centre’s slope went through significant changes when management was handed over from the local council to Snowsport Cymru Wales, the governing body of snow sports in Wales.

They run instructor courses, junior ski and snowboard school at the weekends, school events and competitions, they even have an extended slope to facilitate ski racing!

Whether it’s skiing or snowboarding you’re interested in, the centre’s highly qualified instructors have travelled all over the world pursuing their passion for snow sports. You can rely on them to get you excited about the snow and snow sports. The talented team provide activities for all levels and ages for individuals and groups.

No experience? Don’t worry the team are used to having a wide range of abilities learning with them. The majority of adult clients learning with them are first timers or beginners. Most just want to have a few lessons to make the most out of their first, second or third holiday. Similarly, a lot of children who go on a skiing trip with their schools will come for a group of lessons with their school, or join in the fun at the ski and snowboard schools on weekends.

Snowsport Wales run over 11,000 sessions a year and provide special deals for schools, charities and businesses.

For those with little ones that would like to learn, the centre has started a brand new program for children under six years old. 6

With the same two instructors every week so they can consistently monitor your child’s progress and adapt. All specifically designed to create a safe and fun learning experience. With a maximum of five kids to each instructor, they’re guaranteed the support and guidance they need to improve. Their schools program is twinned with InspireSki who offer the school trip experience of a lifetime; giving pupils the opportunity to ski in some of the world’s best resorts for that life changing experience. For the more advanced clients who are looking to develop their techniques and push themselves from competent skiers to good, technical all-mountain ski & snowboarders. Then Snowsports Wales’ race club, freestyle club or, perhaps, a series of private lessons, may just be for you.

There have been a number of successful ski racers that began their journey at this slope, and progressed through the Ski Club. The centre’s skilled instructors are now fully qualified to teach disability skiing. Disability Skiing gives you the opportunity to bypass your limitation and adapt yourself with training, a guide or even special equipment to go on and ski independently. Any sport can be an adaptive sport, and can be a great way to rehabilitate, boost confidence and find a new passion or rejuvenate an old one. Looking to get more involved? Cardiff Ski Club, meet every Tuesday evening at the Ski Centre have produced plenty of national ski competitors and continue to bring of ski racing to young people around Cardiff.

The Snowboard Club meets on a Sunday night. This club has grown exponentially over the last few years, morphing into a freestyle club, where freestyle skiers and snowboarders can learn and progress under the advice and instruction of experienced instructors. It’s snow time! If you’re on the look out for a snow sport facility to get yourself slope ready. With passionate and enthusiastic staff to get you up to speed then Cardiff Ski and Snowboard Centre may be the place for you to begin your journey. We’ll be back to learn more about freestyle in our next issue. So, as they say, watch this space. In the meantime check out the centre’s Facebook page and website for further details of their events and courses. 7

If you’re looking for a set of keys cut or to pick up a new pair of shoes or repair an old pair. Then Canton Cobbler has the experienced craftsmanship to fulfil your needs. We spoke to Tim Fowler to find out a little bit more…

CANTON COBBLER

Tell us about the history of the shop? Gordon Hughes was the man that started it all. Gordon and my father Don Fowler worked together in a Cobblers in Caerphilly. Gordon left to set up Canton Cobbler in the mid-70s and my father moved to Australia where he continued to work as a shoe repairer. My father returned to Cardiff to set up his own business, a few years later Gordon retired and asked my father to carry on the business. Since then my father has expanded, we can repair shoes with lockstitch and goodyear welted techniques. He increased the range of keys we are able to cut including car keys, dimple and track keys. He also diversified into leather goods a few years back which started him on the path to retailing handmade shoes.

I have only been in the business a short time in comparison. After finishing university studying business and economics I started my own career but found myself more interested in my father’s business than my own, I quickly joined my father at Canton Cobbler.

“We specialize in lockstitch and Goodyear welted shoe constructions.” The Canton Cobbler has been running for more than 40 years what do you think this experience adds to the service? When people look at shoes they can instantly tell if they like them or not, when we look at shoes we can tell how they are made. We have seen different construction methods come and go and we know how to repair all of them. 12

This experience not only gives us the depth of knowledge that we use in our repairs but it applies to the products we retail. We don’t choose our products for profit or because they are trending, we choose them because we know they are quality, from our Visconti bags, wallets and purses to our extensive range of Barker Shoes each product is selected by us. What sort of repairs do you do to shoes? Heels and soles are our most popular repairs but we can do nearly anything. We specialize in lockstitch and Goodyear welted shoe constructions which are how Barker shoes are made. We can repair them using the same methods as the way they are made. Who better to advise you on your next footwear purchase than someone who repairs and retails quality shoes.

What other services do you offer? As well as repairing and retailing shoes we have recently started refurbishing shoes. We repair, retail and refurbish all under one roof. Key cutting watch batteries and watch straps are just some of the other services we provide. Tell me more about Barker shoes, Christmas is only around the corner. Barker shoes make beautiful handmade shoes in Northampton and they have been doing so since 1880. Each and every pair they make are of the highest quality and they have one of the biggest ranges of all handmade shoemakers.

“We repair, retail and refurbish all under one roof.”

The shoes themselves make really remarkable gifts and with our range of Saphir shoe care products to help look after them coupled with the services that Canton Cobbler offer it’s a gift that people can enjoy for years to come, and a gift they will remember. 13

Dinas Powys’ new eatery that stays true to its name by pairing humble ingredients with classic cooking methods in order to create honest, delicious dishes in a relaxed and enjoyable environment. We spoke to owner Antonio to find out more.

THE HUMBLE ONION

At The Humble Onion we use simple techniques to show our quality ingredients the up most respect. We are fond of traditional methods such as curing, pickling, confit, and smoking that enables the best flavours to shine. I believe that our food is simple in essence yet displays well constructed, balanced flavours. The menu changes monthly highlighting produce in its finest form. Our fillet of beef dishes have proved to be extremely popular, sustaining a permanent place on the menu with a different garnish each month. As a child my parents have always worked in the catering industry and home cooked meals were always of a French nature so, when it came for me to create new dishes, I chose to combine these nostalgic flavours with good British ingredients. Those of you who enjoy the food we have on offer in The Humble Onion have my mother and father to

thank, without them forcing me to eat mussels from a very young age - which was not well received by friends who we’re used to fish fingers and waffles I would not be where I am today. This was the foundation for my love of French food and, over the years, the majority of my knowledge has come from reading French classic cook books, my favourite of which is Michael Roux Senior - Sauces; known to me and my staff as ‘The Bible’. I never set out to change the culinary world with elaborate, outlandish dishes but just wanting to cook good, honest food where customers can share my passion and not leave hungry. Not only are we humble in our cooking but we are humble in nature as we continue to find our feet as a new business. So far we have catered for special occasions and private functions within our venue, as well as being approached to cater for weddings and home serving. This is extremely flattering and is something we can grow into in the future. 14

The winter season is upon us which means Christmas party season is fast approaching, we have created special winter menus that can be found on the website. At this time of year I enjoy using Autumnal and Winter ingredients to create warm, inviting food such as braised lamb breast, pomme puree, hazelnuts, rosemary jus, and roasted root vegetables. The Humble team would like to take the opportunity to thank all customers who have shown their support and continue to visit us, stay humble.

Annie Cartwright, Director, Skin and Face Clinics, was delighted to be recognised in Hello! Magazine recently as one of the best in the business for providing muscle-relaxing treatments to smooth away our lines and wrinkles.

SKIN & FACE CLINICS Annie also gave her expert advice on BBC Radio and ITV on how to ensure cosmetic treatments are safe and effective. This came as a report on ethics, safety, and regulation of cosmetic procedures, was published by the Nuffield Council on Bioethics. We wanted to find out more.

So what do you think about the recent report on ethical issues related to cosmetic procedures? The Nuffield Council’s report has drawn attention again to the lack of regulation and standards within the medical aesthetics sector. It’s an excellent piece of work that raises important issues. Hopefully it will promote further discussion and encourage the government to look again at regulation and standards. When things go wrong it is the patient who has to live with the consequences. At best, poor results will last months; at worst there could be serious long-term issues. This is why it is imperative that those thinking about treatment do their homework! What are your top tips to help people ensure their treatment is high quality, safe, and effective? I have six top tips to help your readers make the right choice about their treatment. 1. Practitioner The person doing your treatment should be a fully-qualified nurse, doctor or dentist. Their details should appear on their professional register that you can search on the internet to verify qualifications. Also consider the amount of time they have been offering medical aesthetic treatments and how much experience they have. Injectable treatments, like medical procedures, sometimes do not go to plan. Health professionals are best placed to help you if this should happen. 2. Products Ask what products will be used and why your practitioner has chosen them. Do they have a training certificate proving they have been trained to use the product? Ask to see the packaging.

3. Procedure Reputable clinics will offer you a consultation and take a medical history to check your suitability for treatment. You should be fully informed about the limitations of a procedure and the potential risks, as well as the benefits of various treatment options. 4. Price Don’t be tempted to go for the cheapest treatment. Offers and promotions frequently reflect unqualified or inexperienced practitioners, using cheaper products that might not deliver the results you are looking for. In the worst instances syringes may be shared with someone else, leaving you at huge risk of infection. The emphasis should be on whether the treatment is appropriate for you, rather than price. If it looks too good to be true, then it probably is! 5. Pressure Never feel under pressure to have a procedure. 6. Premises Before deciding on a treatment and practitioner, take a look at their premises. Is it a clean clinical environment where you would want to be treated? These treatments can bring amazing results but don’t cut corners. Make sure your treatment is delivered by a properly qualified, reputable health professional. 18

UNLEASH HELL

FRIDAY 10th NOVEMBER 2017 www.elitefitness.co.uk

John Williams, a 50 year old father of two teenagers from south Wales shares with us his fitness journey with Elite Fitness, Cardiff.

ELITE FITNESS Tell us a little about yourself Whilst I have had an on-off relationship with a basic level of fitness over the years, I had undertaken no competitive sport prior to joining Elite Fitness. I had toyed with the idea of trying my hand at white collar boxing but, approaching 47, had I left it too late? What have been your barriers and frustrations? My main barriers were my ability to recover between sessions and to cope with niggling injuries I picked up over the course of a training cycle. With the help of Elite Fitness, I have significantly improved my knowledge of how often I can and should train. I found that rest is as important as training and that patience is sometimes your biggest ally. What was the moment you began to see you were making a change for the positive? I felt a change for the positive very early into training for my first fight, the basic fitness work was tough but I gradually acclimatised to it. Fighting is the most fundamental form of physical challenge; this is probably why its appeal has lasted the test of centuries.

I have raised over £23,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support over the course of my 6 fights. I learnt good nutrition, hydration and supplementation were vital to me being able to train at an appropriate frequency and intensity; this led to me being able to manage my weight effectively and sustainably. I reduced my weight by 10kg over a ten-month period. What actions have made the biggest impact towards the changes you’ve made? The biggest changes I’ve made have been two-fold. Firstly, the ability to set achievable goals and to work towards them in a measurable way by cycling my effort in terms of intensity between fights. Secondly, through experience I have learned not to be limited in terms of goals, there is always scope to improve.

What has changed in you specifically? I look and feel younger than when I started white collar boxing with Elite Fitness, people close to me can see the difference. 21

I hope it has changed the way that people view me, it has been a major challenge for me to make this change at my age. I feel that I have experienced something that most people haven’t, having pushed myself beyond what I thought I was capable of. Be honest with yourself, how often can you genuinely say ‘I gave it absolutely everything I had? I now know that I can look back and say those words with some conviction!

Rhiwbina Dental Surgery has been running for over 20 years, since then they have expanded with a second surgery at The Pines, to schedule double the treatments! If you’re looking for highly respected specialists to put you at ease and fix all your dental issues, then Rhiwbina Dental definitely has everything you need.

R HIWBINA DENTAL They have a strong team of friendly professionals at the ready to deal with whatever problems you may be experiencing. This isn’t an ordinary dentist where the waiting room magazines are the only places perms and flared trousers are still in, both practices are bespoke and modern with a calming ambience, what more could you ask for? We spoke to Assistant Practice Manager Nia Evans to find out what’s been happening with the surgery recently… So, recently you were a part of the Rhiwbina Village Festival and raised a substantial amount for FaceUp Cymru, can you tell us a little more about this? Face up is a charity set up by health care professionals and patients to support them through the journey of head and neck cancer, helping them to manage and come to terms with diagnosis and treatment. Faceup Cymru has a range of objectives to help people by making their lives more comfortable; including providing specialist equipment, funding a dedicated Physiotherapist, Social worker and a Clinical nurse specialized in wound care.

They also provide patient self-help groups to help with confidence building, coping strategies, target setting, coping with disfigurement as well as support from a Counselor.

John Hawkins, who established the original dental surgery in Rhiwbina village nearly 50 years ago, is a Trustee of the charity, having suffered from oral cancer himself. As we still have such a close relationship with John (as do many of our patients), we wanted to support a charity that is so close to our hearts. At last year’s festival we raised an amazing £1360.68, so had set ourselves a target of beating that this year! And we did it… A fantastic £1420.00 was raised!

What range of services do you have on offer? n CT Scanner n Dental Implants n Specialists in Periodontology n Specialists in Oral Surger n Cerec n Tooth Whitening n Hygienist n Facial Rejuvenation n Denplan n Endodontist n Private Dentistry n Finance Available

The staff at Rhiwbina Dental are extremely proud of both of our practices and the high standards that we set ourselves. We also greatly appreciate the commitment that our patients show to us in allowing us to care for them.

At Rhiwbina Dental in Cardiff, we provide the very best in dental implant treatment – minus the fear factor! Implants are an investment in your future dental health, and we know you’ll feel reassured by the fact that Rhiwbina has assembled some of the most highly-qualified experts in the field. In addition to our extensive history with implants, we are constantly looking to the future and exploring the latest technologies and innovations to ensure we remain on the cutting edge of implantology. We have built an international reputation for excellence, based on a willingness to constantly challenge ourselves and the boundaries of technology, achieving, what is often, life-changing transformations for our patients. Let’s hear from those who know first hand… “I have been travelling from London to the Rhiwbina Dental Surgery since 2004. Nick Claydon was referred to me by one of the true masters and Dental Clinical Dean at Bristol University - Ken Marshall. Nick and his staff are truly patient focused. Friendly, passionate, professional and big promotors of preventive dentistry.

The investment that goes into the practice, equipment and staff is 1st class. I would highly recommend the Surgery if you are looking for an affordable and long term care solution. With the level of expertise, industry knowledge and state of the art machines nothing is impossible. You only have one set of teeth so it is only right to have one of the best surgeries in Britain look after them” “I was a complete dental phobic before I found the surgery. I came in around 4 months ago, I was in absolute agony due to an abscess which concluded in me having a root canal treatment. I saw my dentist, Andy the first day I came in, I was super scared and cried on arrival. He put me at ease straight away and was very gentle and kind. My next appointment was by the root canal specialist Cameron who was equally as lovely and kind. I now visit the surgery with no hesitation or nervousness and would completely recommend this surgery to everyone especially people who are as I was dental phobic”

“ The very best in dental implant treatment.” 23

With the hair extension market growing more and more, we had a chat with award winning stylist, Lawrence Taylor from Precision Hair Design. Cardiff to find out more about the makeovers he’s been creating…

PRECISION

AWARD WINNING HAIR EXTENSIONS Firstly Lawrence, congratulations on your award! Thank you! It was fantastic to be the first, not only in Cardiff, but the whole of Wales to be awarded the ‘Extension Artist’ status by the Good Salon Guide. As a stylist, you get an amazing feeling out of transforming somebody’s look - be it a chic new haircut or that uber-glossy colour. For me, when you’re working with hair extensions it can take that feeling to another level! To be able to add length to your hair, thickness, volume and even colour without the use of harsh chemicals. It’s magical. You’ve got a big following on social media, and some of the transformations are shockingly good! it’s like looking at a whole new person… The really great thing is, clients get to feel like to feel like a whole new person. Having that extra hair can be a massive confidence booster. I’m happiest with my extension work, when I take a look at the end result and think ‘even I wouldn’t know!’

I’m so proud to work closely with Racoon International who are number one in hair extensions. For me, it’s really important that when my clients are wearing hair extensions, the health of their natural hair is a priority. All of Racoon International’s systems are endorsed by a leading Trichologist Iain Sallis and are scientifically proven not to damage your hair. With Iain’s endorsement clients can have complete confidence in the systems. Tell us about the hair extension systems you use? Racoon International offer three fantastic extension systems. The Luxe Bond, Luxe Link and Luxe Weft. This means there’s something for everybody! Your extension journey at Precision all starts with an in-depth consultation where we’ll talk you through the various options, complete a hair and scalp analysis and homecare maintenance.

“ The health of their natural hair is a priority.” 24

You also offer the amazing Hair in Recovery programme, could you tell us more? We all know someone who has suffered from severe hair loss, alopecia or have been through chemotherapy. Working with Racoon International has allowed us to offer the most wonderful system – The Hair in Recovery programme. This is where hair extensions can be applied in specialist placements to very short, fine or thinner hair to allow clients to rebuild their self-esteem and confidence. Not everybody is qualified in this system, it takes extensive training and education in the art of hair extension application. All clients that are accepted for the ‘Hair in Recovery’ programme will receive subsidy of hair, bonding and aftercare products for the first twelve months! Is glue used to apply the extensions? Absolutely not. If you choose our Luxe Bond system, gentle translucent bonds are made from a non-allergy formula which when removed leaves no trace or residue.

“I’m totally in love with my Racoon extensions. I’ve had different brands of extensions in the past but Racoon have been the best by far. They blend really well with my own super short hair, I get hardly any hair loss when brushing/washing. I love having long hair again! ”

How Discreet are the extensions? They’re virtually invisible. Once applied, you are unable to tell the difference between what’s your own and the added hair when using our expert techniques. All application methods are discreetly hidden and flexible this means you are able to wear the hair up or down with the hair extensions still being comfortable to wear. If you’re interested to know a little bit more, give Precision a call and a member of my talented team will book you in for a complimentary, no obligation consultation. TESTIMONIALS

What clients say...

Within a week after the first appointment, he had created a fantastic result that I would not have believed possible. In addition, he did it with a huge amount of empathy and kindness. All the staff are lovely and welcoming, the salon is beautiful and Lawrence is a shining star. Thanks a million, I am super grateful. 5*

Luxe Bond Client

Amazing results with Hair In Recovery Claire Smith I booked a consultation with Lawrence having seen an article about his skills using Racoon hair extensions on Hair In Recovery.

It shows the impact a business has made on the locals when they brave the torrential rain of a Welsh autumn to visit, and that is exactly what happened when the loyal customers of Ebony Hair and Beauty battled the elements to celebrate its tenth anniversary.

EBONY HAIR & BEAUTY

Although the rain was falling the weather did little to dampen the spirits of those who attended this celebration. After ten fantastic years in business on the 3rd of September 2017 Edwina, along with all of her staff in Ebony Hair and Beauty and countless members of their loyal customer base, came to the two storey salon to party the night away. With a fantastically delicious BBQ prepared by culinary master and friend to the salon Earl, along with music courtesy of the Director of Radio Cardiff, Donna Zammit, everyone raised a glass (or three) in cheer to toast ten years of exemplary hair and beauty treatments.

Bell, Tatenda Mukuruva and Carman

With treatments such as; nails (gels and shellac), spray tans, manicures, pedicures, waxing, and make up, as well as hair treatments including cutting, re-styling, hair extensions, colouring, and specialised skills in Afro Caribbean hair all available. All of this mixed with the warm atmosphere and happy staff make everyone who visits feel like they are a part of the family, so it is no wonder that customers kept returning again and again for ten whole years.

As I am approaching the end of another incredible wedding season, I have selected a few favourites to share. I particularly love these images as they sum up what my photography is about, love, connection, emotion and fun. This October, I celebrate five years in business, this I cannot believe.

It’s been a wonderful journey so far and I’m extremely excited about what the future has in store. I am so grateful to every bride and groom that has trusted me to capture their special day. Each new enquiry and booking is an honour. I’m not quite finished with 2017 weddings as I still have another eight to photograph before the end of the year! I’m also looking forward to booking Autumn family portraits as it’s such a beautiful time to photograph. Seeking smooth skin? Madame Wax is Cardiff ’s most prolific wax studio, they have an array of awards to fill their repertoire! The team have been praised for their customer service, so you can put your feet up and relax while they do all the work.

M ADAME WAX

They offer a range of services from the ‘best Brazilian’ wax in Cardiff to HD brows, LVL lashes and they also have a range of male treatments, taking you from zero to Va Va Voom. If you have any unwanted hair, Madame Wax have the specialist skills to give you the “Ooh” without the “Ouch”. We spoke to The Madame Wax, Adele Bradbury to find out more. Why should women should wax? The thing with a good wax is once you’ve experienced the results; you won’t be picking that razor up anytime soon! Waxing leaves you with sumptuously smooth skin that’ll last. With hair removed from the root, there’s no annoying stubble. Best of all you can remain hair free for up to three weeks. When you feel good in your skin, there’s no need to hide in your trackies; get that little black dress on! It’s one of the reasons that women who wax can wear their favourite lingerie or outfit with full confidence. When you’re more confident it shows,

and there’s nothing more attractive than confidence! What’s the most popular treatment? Definitely intimate waxes – we offer “the best Brazilians in Cardiff ”. Clients can choose between seven variations, but the Dita – our signature Hollywood wax (which is full bald eagle) is the most popular! But we also have a brow bar which has been extremely successful. Our LVL lash lift is really popular as well, it really enhances your eyelashes to give you that beautiful full lash look. I hear you have very loyal customers. Why do your clients come back? Clients love the body confidence they get from Madame Wax. We call it “ooh la la!” and you notice the difference. We’re fun, friendly, and just the right amount of cheeky. People also come back as we are specialists in waxing and do it day in day out. Our no-nonsense style puts clients at ease and makes all embarrassment disappear within an instant. 36

We’re real women – just like those reading this! We don’t judge, we’re just here to help our clients get the silky soft skin they want – and we do it pretty well. Does waxing hurt? I’d be lying if I said a wax was entirely painless. After all, this treatment removes hair from the root, so you’re going to feel something. But that’s where your waxologist can make all the difference. If you’re relaxed you’ll feel less discomfort. It’s why we’re so focused on making sure clients feel comfortable on the treatment couch. Technique and skill matter, we do nothing but wax so there’s no inexperienced fumbling, which can make the experience painful. We always promise to give you the “ooh” without the “ouch!” Do clients ever feel embarrassed when they come for treatment? I know there are lots of people who secretly want a wax, but never book a treatment. And I’m sure embarrassment is one of the reasons. We do have plenty of first-timers at the salon and as with any new experience, it’s only natural to feel a little unsure.

I know some clients feel a little embarrassed about removing items of clothing, but we soon put these fears to rest with our Madame Wax customer service. All the Madame’s are experienced at making you feel comfortable and giving you the best treatment possible. The way we work also prevents the need for clients to feel uncomfortable. We won’t leave you second-guessing what to do - especially if it’s your first time. What’s more, we recognise some women will wish they were somewhere else! But the atmosphere soon reassures them and many clients are surprised to discover they actually enjoy their treatment. How can readers book their first wax? It’s easy. Simply call the salon and we’ll get you booked in. Our opening times are listed below. We also have a fabulous online booking system and our very own Madame Wax app!

And if you’re not quite ready to book a treatment just give us a call or drop us a message on Facebook. Have a chat with one of the team about your concerns (I promise we have seen and heard everything before!) You can even pop into the salon if you prefer and have a quick peek at the treatment room to set your mind at ease. There’s no pressure, remember you don’t have to dive deep in with a full Hollywood, we can start with something a little more subtle, like a classic bikini wax to get you into the swing of things. Whether you decide to book in or just find out more, please don’t leave it! If you’re not waxing, I promise that you are missing out. Take that first step to getting the silky soft skin you want and give us a call today on 29 2023 2560 or book online at www.madamewax.com You won’t regret it!

After visiting Jerez de la Frontera in Spain over ten years ago, Cardiff born Graeme Hooper fell in love with the city, its people, and most importantly the food and drink found there. So much so that, after considerable research in the area, he convinced long time friend David Mitchell to embark on a business adventure.

PRODUCTOS DEL M ARCO

With produce that originates from El Marco de Jerez - hence the name Productos Del Marco - a place that is known locally as the ‘Sherry Triangle’, Graeme and David sell sherry, brandy, sherry vinegar, wines, oils, charcuterie, cured cheeses, cured fish products from Barbate, chocolates from Cadiz, and hand crafted Andalucian pottery.

With more sun in a year than Wales probably sees in ten, the stunning sunshine region Marco de Jerez offers a great deal of gastronomic delights and, with PDM hoping to bring rare breed Retinto Beef, Iberian pork, and organic honey to their ranges in the near future, you’ll soon be able to enjoy such delights from the comfort of your own home.

All of this is available via their online store for anyone, no matter if you are an individuals or a Spanish Deli looking to add something a little bit special to the menu. Furthermore PDM also deliver anywhere in the UK, meaning that no matter where you are in the country you can enjoy their delicious range of wares.

In a world of low interest rates, ever-changing legislation and increasing life expectancy, Harry Robinson offers some useful guidance on retirement planning. Are you running the risk of outliving your savings?

H ARRY ROBINSON WEALTH MANAGEMENT In April 2016, the Association of British Insurers (ABI) published statistics for the first full year since the Freedom and Choice pension reforms were introduced. And while the figures showed that the majority of savers are taking a sensible approach, there were signs that a minority may be withdrawing too much from their pension fund. Moreover, that minority is doing so at rates that would see their money run out in a decade or less, if they are reliant on it as their main source of income. The reality is, those taking 10% or more regularly from their pension pot are likely to run out of money. And if they’re relying solely on the state pension to see them through their later years, they will have to accept that their standard of living is going to drop significantly. The State Pension provides a limited income (currently £159.55 for a single person, per week, based on a full NI record), which falls drastically short of what is really needed to fund a comfortable lifestyle.

So how do we avoid poverty in retirement? First, decide how large a fund you will need. One method is to multiply your target retirement income by 25. For example, if you think you’ll need £25,000 a year, aim for a fund of £625,000. Next, select the most appropriate investment vehicles to achieve your goal. Property, investment bonds and ISAs have all proved popular over recent years but don’t offer the same degree of tax breaks as a pension. If your retirement is imminent you will obviously want to maximise your income from the money available. Retirees opting for drawdown pensions should seek professional help to calculate how much money they can withdraw each year without running out. While selecting a balanced and well-diversified investment portfolio is critical, knowing how much money to take from a drawdown policy is arguably of greater importance. 40

Harry Robinson is based locally and wants to help City Life readers to discover the simple yet highly effective steps you can take to protect your wealth and stay in control - helping the right amount of it pass to the right people at the right time. For further information or to request your complimentary guide to retirement planning, please contact Harry Robinson of St. James’s Place Wealth Management.

Yes, they discussed issued that they had resolved on similar projects and incorporated this into the element of works. What difference has the work done made to the way in which the building now appears or functions? A few of the manufacturing processes at the Valley Mill factory

Valley Mill have been manufacturing and supplying 100% Welsh made products for a decade now and it doesn’t look like they are going to be slowing down anytime soon.

VALLEY

Valley Mill have been manufacturing and supplying 100% Welsh made products for a decade now and it doesn’t look like they are going to be slowing down anytime soon.

Their journey began with director and creator Kevin Thomas in 2007, after purchasing a laser engraving machine and utilising two bedrooms at home as a workshop. The one-man band started attending markets and shows on the weekend; selling handmade laser engraved Welsh slate products, whilst still working as a full time manufacturing engineer. After committing to the business full time in 2009 the next step was to build two sheds in his garden to house the business.

In 2012, due to a surge in business brought on by supplying retail stores throughout the UK, Valley Mill moved into a commercial property in Crynant. This gave them the room and opportunity to expand their manufacturing processes, resulting in the creation of their range of Soy wax candles & handmade natural soaps.

Due to the success of supplying other stores, the natural progression was for them to open their own high street store in Neath. Two years later the momentum continued, and with the help of local investment funding, were able to purchase better machinery and take over the unit next door in Crynant. This has expanded their workshop to an impressive 300 square metres in total, which houses 3 high powered laser engraving machines, a 7Kw sandblast engraver and a 2 meter bridge cutter. In 2016 they made the brave decision to move their high street store from Neath, to a much larger store in the heart of Swansea. Valley Mill now hand make a wide range of Welsh slate products; from coasters and placemats, to clocks and memo boards - all of which can be personalised in-store whilst you wait. With the help of one of their friendly sales assistants, you can also design your own house signs, memorials, trophies and awards; all of which are handcrafted to order in the Crynant workshop.

MILL

As well as their Swansea store and online, you can find Valley Mill’s products in over 140 stores throughout the UK.

Alongside their large range of Welsh slate home and giftware, you can find a variety of products from other likeminded Welsh companies; such as Melin Tregwynt, Tweedmill, Welsh Lavender and many more. All of these products, which are also handmade in Wales, include Welsh woollen blankets, scarves & cushions, handmade ceramics, natural beauty products, jewellery and much more. All products are hand picked to compliment Valley Mill’s own ranges. Valley Mill is proud to support other independent Welsh businesses, and stock some of the best products that Wales has to offer. Having supplied products to some of the most demanding and influential people in the world, such as Barack Obama, David Cameron and even the Queen, Valley Mill has the confidence and drive to keep putting Wales on the map.

“I believe in these uncertain times it is important to support Welsh companies, which is why the whole ethos of Valley Mill is to only sell products that are actually made in Wales.” Check out everything Valley Mill have to offer by visiting the website or for a more immersive experience pop to the store…

PROUD SPONSORS OF CARDIFF BLUES

Values of service and expertise, but not at any cost! Robertsons Solicitors in its current form came into being in 1985 but, despite their youthful appearance thanks to a recent rebrand, they are much older than you think. City Life talks to Chris Barber of Robertsons Solicitors.

ROBERTSONS SOLICITORS

VALUES OF SERVICE & EXPERTISE - BUT NOT AT ANY COST

Can you give me a brief history of the firm? Robertsons in its current form came into being in 1985 when law firms Paddison Wigley and Robertsons merged to form Robertsons Solicitors. But despite our youthful appearance thanks to our recent rebrand, we’re much older than that! We were actually established in the Cardiff docklands in 1903. We’ve always been based and practiced in the heart of Cardiff, although we do have clients right across the UK now. What client base do you serve? Well the short answer is anyone and everyone. We do have clients across the UK however it would be fair to say that most of our clients are in South Wales.

And your services? We provide family law and commercial legal services, so it naturally sits that we advise and represent individuals and businesses in a legal capacity. On a family basis this might be a couple looking to buy their first home together, who want to set out an agreement about what might happen should things not work out. We will represent either party in a divorce or separation, a family with a legal change of name or in a dispute with a neighbour over a boundary perhaps. We’re even executors in matters of probate for some of our clients. Still in the family under the banner of Child Law we will often work with the Local Authority around the protection of a child, or represent a parent in a case against the Local Authority. What else should our readers know about Robertsons? Many people mistakenly think that because we have a prestigious address in the centre of Cardiff, that big city fees apply. We’re certainly not a budget law firm, but the majority of our clients are happily surprised when we discuss fees.

Chris Barber, Solicitor 52

We take on cases large and small – a straightforward Will may cost as little as £99. Something more complex would naturally attract a higher fee. But my point is that just because we’re a law firm steeped in history, based in a wonderful old building in Cardiff, and with a highly expert team on hand, it doesn’t naturally follow that our fees are off the scale. Two of Robertsons values are service and expertise. We aim to deliver the very best service to every customer, using our breadth of expertise. That’s our focus! And when we do this well, our customers keep on coming back when they need us.

June Salter from Penarth has been going to Curves, the ladies only gym in Penarth for 10 years. Since the gym was taken over by Rachael Devine and James Beasley, June has enjoyed even greater results.

CURVES

June Salter

Ruth Richardson, Lucy Davies, Rachael Devine and James Beasley

Rachael and James have invested £13k in new equipment, new showers and a changing room and have introduced Body Balance, Zumba, Boxercise and a Running Club, which June and the 170 members can now enjoy. June shares with us her fitness journey with Curves. How did you hear about Curves? About 10 years ago, I had a leaflet through the door advertising Curves. Why did you feel the need to join? I wasn’t overweight as such but as I had an office job, I was sitting all of the time so I felt unfit and needed to tone up. Did you go there on your own? No, I did go with a friend initially for a bit of morale support. Did you notice any difference in your body after a while? Yes, I did. I also enjoyed the fact that it was women only.

Not that I felt that men would be staring at me necessarily but it’s nice to know that you can go to a gym without putting make-up on and be surrounded by muscle-bound men, flexing their muscles and showing off. They have their own gyms for that! How have you found Curves since Rachael and James have taken over? The machines are much better than they were before. They weren’t really doing their job efficiently any more. How do you find Rachael, James and the team at the gym? They are fantastic. They give you so much time and explain things really well. I go three times a week for an hour at a time. The circuit is 30 minutes or you can attent a class which is included in the membership. Rachael is amazing as is James, Lucy and Ruth.

“ I’ve dropped a couple of dress sizes.” 55

What difference have you seen in your body and level of fitness? I have lost sixteen and a half inches overall. I’ve dropped a couple of dress sizes and lost a stone. I’m delighted! Would you recommend Curves to your friends? My neighbour has now joined because she said she wanted to get results like me! I always say that it’s very friendly there and you can make a lot of new friends. They work you hard while you are on the machines but you can have a chat on the recovery boards. What’s more important is that you get results. I’m thrilled!

When has it ever paid to drag your heels? Making Tax Digital (MTD) has been pushed back to 2020. Great news? Don’t have to make the changes? Sadly that’s wrong. When MTD eventually starts, the digital heel draggers, will find their tech savvy competitors sailing to success, with the last boat long gone. Waiting for MTD before adopting cloud technology is crazy. Digitalisation is increasing the speed and ease of doing business right now.

LEWIS BALLARD We’re keeping ahead of the tide so we’re not only ready to deal with the inevitable hiccups of MTD, we’re also ensuring our clients stay ahead of competitors today.

‘An investment in knowledge pays the best interest.’ We’ve made that investment with Xero Cloud Accounting. As avid Xero pioneers, we’re actively working with them to improve the resource, whilst also championing the voices of our clients when it comes to feedback and progress. Xero is continually adding new and more streamlined features and aim to make using their software so simple that it would be reckless not to.

“ Accounting’s cutting edge.”

Where is the silver lining? Cloud accounting is up to date information on a constantly updating platform. It keeps you in touch with the figures of your business as they change. Taxation experts suggest that there’ll be an organic move to cloud accounting.

We’re doing it now. Everyone will have to do it eventually. This is accounting’s cutting edge. And it’s right where future businesses success stories will be. Genghis Khan’s empire grew on his willingness to embrace new technology; the bow and arrow. No-one is suggesting that you start conquering your business competitors with primitive weapons, but why use outdated systems? 56

Proactive change helped Genghis create a vast empire; vanquishing enemies, not just because he was ready to change, but because he had changed and prepared in advance. To be prepared is half the victory. At Lewis Ballard we’ve making far more strides than just getting ahead of MTD. We’re also launching our Lewis Ballard App. It’s packed with useful tools, to track mileage, upload your receipts oand calculate tax. It will give you fingertip access to Xero, Receipt Bank and many more programs to help streamline your business, with direct access to our portal to sign off documents on the go.

“ We’re also launching our Lewis Ballard App. It’s packed with useful tools.”

Neil and Janet Ballard

In addition, our bespoke program 4Sight gives us the ability to regularly predict your business future letting you pounce on opportunities, and dodge problems before they surface. 4Sight will raise your business planning capabilities beyond the monthly board meeting to the continuous nurture of your assets. Convenience is key. The eternal struggle for busy business owners is time management. How can I keep on top of bookkeeping? keep track of cashflow? Or predict what’s coming? Xero, the LB App and 4Sight are big steps towards really catching business up with the on-the-go lives that we lead. Cloud accounting is secure and it saves time. Apps are an integral part of the way we do business. So why wait to change?

To make it even easier for clients to navigate these systems, we’re integrating them with our brand new website, so that everything related to our service is connected to one, all encompassing, business hub. You don’t need as much 4Sight as Ghengis to see this is the way you need to go!

PENARTH

Launch night of Penarth Fashion Week Local independent businesses including boutiques, tailors, hair designers, food establishments and make-up artists and members of the RNLI got together to launch Penarth Fashion Week which runs from 9th – 15th October, 2017. As you know, PFW was born to raise money for much needed support and fund raising for the local RNLI, a charity which saves lives every day. The evening culminated with the unveiling of the “RNLI Dress” worn by Gaby Harding and designed by Georgina-Grace Smith. The event was hosted by Etc. Penarth and later in the week again hosted another photoshoot to unveil the “RNLI Suit” designed by Nathan Palmer and modelled by Kieron Davies. What a very glamorous venue for a very glamorous affair! Photos by Jamie Thomas
