We are not a large publishing group pretending to be home grown. City Life magazine is written, designed and printed in Cardiff for the people of Cardiff. Our philosophy We are committed to quality. WELCOME
We’ve been busy little bees this last few months. From east to west, from the north to Cardiff Bay, we’ve been buzzing around meeting great people and discovering lots of brilliant independent businesses. There’s nothing like shopping in an independent shop. The owners are passionate about their business and that really comes across in the way they engage with you, the care that they have gone to in selecting the products and service they offer. Chain shopping is fine, and has its place, but when you walk into an independent, they seem to care more about offering you a great product and, more importantly, a great service. Not only that, but by actually practicing the #ShopLocal ethos, you’re ensuring that more of your hard-earned money is staying in the local community. We haven’t been able to get to meet every business that we would have liked to, so if you’re a fab little café or boutique or a great gift shop, butcher, baker or candlestick maker, please get in touch – we’d love to meet you in our summer issue.
Similarly, if you’re a City Life reader and know a business that you feel could have, or should have been featured, then please let me know. We’re always looking Cardiff ’s little independent gems. I do hope you enjoy this issue as much as we have enjoyed bringing it to you. See you again in the summer.

Welsh Hearts – The Dai Fib Appeal Wales rugby captain Sam Warburton appeared with ‘Dai Fib’ to spearhead a campaign for the widespread provision of defibrillators across Wales. Dai Fibrillator, or Dai Fib for short, is the mascot of a new heart charity in Wales, Welsh Hearts. Shocking statistics state that the survival rate after a sudden cardiac arrest outside of hospital is only 3%. Where a defibrillator is used, the survival rate is 47%. In Wales there are approximately 8,000 sudden cardiac arrests outside hospital each year. Welsh Hearts want to raise funds across Wales in rural communities, work place and schools in order that a defibrillator ispositioned next to every fire extinguisherin Wales.
WRU chief executive Roger Lewis, who is a patron of the Welsh Hearts charity, said: “In this special initiative Welsh Hearts are teaming up with the WRU with the aim of providing a defibrillator to the hundreds of rugby clubs throughout Wales. We needour clubs to get involved with fundraising for this worthwhile cause and in return the charity will provide the life-saving equipment.”
Welsh Hearts Charity Director Sharon Owen said “At present there are only 450 defibrillators in Wales compared to 9000 in England! We hope that Welsh Hearts will change that! “This can only be made possible through donations of time and money and there are so many ways that people can fundraise for us from organising a coffee morning, Balls, Zumba Challenge, Concert, golf days – in fact just about anything goes! Please get in touch if you can help!

Easy car maintenance If you’ve ever had to (and who hasn’t?) arrange for a car to go in for a service or MOT, you’ll know what a complete pain that is. Arranging time off work and being without the car, there has to be better way. Well now there is and, having tried it ourselves, twice, it’s just brilliant. CollectMyWheels.com offers a collection, service (or MOT) and deliver back service which you can book online. On one occasion, they collected our car from the house and dropped it back same day. For our second vehicle, they came to our office in the morning and then dropped it back in the afternoon. Booking was easy and the costs were no more than we’d experienced the conventional way (in one case more competitive). The CollectMyWheels.com staff are really friendly and helpful too so you’ll be in safe hands (at least from our experience) and they have plenty of great testimonials on their website.

Brother and sister Rod and Eleanor Williams’ dream of opening a seriously cool, coffee shop in the heart of Cardiff has been realised. You might be thinking, ‘Another coffee shop?’ but trust me, this one is worth a visit and could even be a caffeine-rich wake-up call for the national chains.
GREYFRIARS Corner First thing I love about it is the interior. It’s light and airy – it feels right. It helps that it commands a slightly elevated position on Greyfriars Corner at the base of the Capital Tower, literally a minute from the north end of Queen Street and Cardiff Castle, and a hop and a skip from the Park Plaza Hotel.
Does the coffee pass the test? Well, I drink enough to know what’s good and this is extremely good. All Sandwiches, Paninis, Wraps, Calzone and Salads are freshly prepared daily on-site and Rod and Eleanor go out of their way to use local Welsh companies whenever possible. There’s clearly a real passion driving this business and it comes through in the interior’s design. It just feels right – you walk through the door and you have that friendly, comfortable feeling. I love the quirky but practical industrial design using recycled materials. It’s stylish but manages not to feel over-designed or cliché.
“ The food is freshly prepared daily on-site and Rod and Eleanor go out of their way to use local Welsh companies.” Rod and Eleanor are no newbies to the industry either. They run the independent, family-owned Deli Plus catering company (established in 2003) which looks after the daily dietary requirements of businesses like Admiral, so you’re in safe hands. On a working day I imagine its appeal will be to the local office workers and business people but this really is worth seeking out if your shopping around the Castle and Queen Street. Tell them City Life sent you. 5
Did you know? Pontcanna was almost completely open farmland until the late nineteenth century. The main route, Cathedral Road, was known as Pontcanna Lane, running between Plasturton Farm in the south and Pontcanna Farm to the north.

Pontcanna’s cafe-go-lucky lifestyle sits very comfortably with its image as a media village – it’s home to several PR companies, designers and many from the film and television community – BBC Television Centre is a short drive away in Llandaff.
It has always attracted the intellectual community and has always reminded me of Oxford and Cambridge. Its location, a short walk from the city centre, makes it one of Cardiff ’s most desirable places to live. Its wide-tree lined streets are especially attractive in spring and summer.

Did you know? The name Pontcanna stems from Pont Canna Farm, which in turn was named after a bridge across the Whitehouse Brook, a one-time tributary of the River Taff which ran between Llandaff Fields and Riverside.
At the top of Cathedral Road, the road kinks to the left and becomes Penhill Road. Pontcanna Fields, a large strip of parkland between Pontcanna and the River Taff is to your right.

How many times have you heard companies say, “Before you build or refurb, talk to us first!” When it comes to mood-lighting, Ian Murphy really means it.
In The Mood Ian Murphy is owner of Inspirational Lighting in Cardiff and, as the the saying goes, what he doesn’t know about mood-lighting, probably isn’t worth knowing. Why is it so important to talk to you first? Mood lighting is not something you can add afterwards. I had a call from a lady recently who’d spent thousands on her kitchen and was absolutely distraught when she realised that we couldn’t retro-fit. If you’re even thinking about a renovation or new build, talk to us first. You’ll need to let everyone else involved in the project know your intentions. When were you established? Ten years ago. I’ve been in the electrical wholesale business for 27 years. We’ve been involved with several hundred projects in Wales, the UK and Europe but the majority of clients are in south Wales and along the M4 corridor. We’ve worked in Dubai several times. No project is the same – it’s never dull. What type of clients use you? We work with domestic and commercial clients in equal measure.
What’s possible? We design for interiors, exteriors and gardens. Kitchens, living areas and bathrooms are very popular canvases for mood-lighting. Usually we invite customers to the showroom where we can give them a demonstration and show them what’s possible. We talk about what they’d like, and their budget, and design a system especially for them. Controls are wireless and can be pre-programmed into your iPhone or iPad. You also have a switch in the room. You can alter the mood of a living space instantly.
Are your installations expensive? I don’t think so when you consider the impact of what we do and the emotional effect it has on customers. I can’t think of another thing you would do to a home that has quite the wow factor for a relatively small amount of money. Also, consider that a lot of the wiring and installation you have to have installed anyway. What we do is make that installation and investment deliver more bang for your buck. Are they expensive to run? We use all LED lighting which is basically low energy systems. For example a 5 watt LED bulb can provide the same light as a conventional 50 watt bulb. Low energy LED is definitely the future. 13

While enjoying a very successful sales career in the automotive industry, Chris Macnamara had always dreamed of opening his own business. In December 2013 - after months of planning and hard work - that dream became reality.
Brogue Trader Usually, when press releases describe someone as dynamic, you can be pretty sure they’re not - at least in my experience, so when I received a release about a new retail venture in Morgan Arcade, I would have been a little sceptical had I not already bumped into Chris at a charity event several weeks earlier. Chris is one of Wales’ most dynamic businessmen - fact. He is one of the most charismatic and enthusiastic entrepreneurs I can honestly say I’ve ever met. Back in the charity event, as he was painting his picture of The Brogue Trader, I believed he could pull off his vision but you never really know until you see the finished article. Some months later, I happened to be chatting to Russell Scott-Lawson of Hawkes Essentials and Russell informed me that Chris was in and feverously transforming what used to be the skateboard shop in Morgan Arcade so I thought I must take a look. At this point, I must say I meet a lot of dreamers in business. Lots of people talk up their plans but, in my experience, for one reason or another, they fall short. The Brogue Trader is certainly not one of those. Chris’ retail dream surpasses everything he described to me at the dinner several months earlier.
What was, a quite a cool skate shop, has been transformed, beautifully, into a shrine to fine footwear. To say it’s elegantly appointed does it a disservice. Hand finished wood panelling showcases the very best gentleman’s shoes including many hand-made items which have received a Royal Warrant. The decor is sublime - the branding is perfectly and professionally executed. If you didn’t know any better, you’d say The Brogue Trader had been established over a hundred years. Honestly, if I had to show someone an excellent example of how to start a retail business, The Brogue Trader would be it.
As we go to press, Chris is launching The Brogue Trader website - an ecommerce operation with a mobile element offering customers the opportunity to have an expert fitting service and to purchase prestige shoes at their office or home. Chris tells me The Brogue Trader has exceeded all sales expectations since opening and I’m not in the least bit surprised.
Chris’ enthusiasm is infectious. He’s passionate about every aspect of the business - from the British hand-made shoes he sells to the quality coffee he proudly serves you as you browse. Nothing about this business is second rate. I ask him if he intends to open more shops - knowing the answer before he replies. “Of course,” he replies with a big smile. “We want to get the offering absolutely right then we’ll think about expanding around the country.”
“Chris is one of Wales’ most dynamic businessmen - fact.” 16 48

WE’VE RAISED THE BAR FOR FITNESS ACHIEVE RESULTS WITH MARRIOTT LEISURE CLUBS TWO FOR ONE MEMBERSHIPS THIS MONTH* 18
Laura Bridgwater and Joan Hoctor make up this fun, swing-style singing duo based in the Cardiff area. Having launched their act three years ago, they are going from strength to strength. We wanted to know more about them.
Gentlemen
Prefer Blondes
L: I’m a bit of a Jackie of all trades. I teach Italian on a private tuition basis and also work a few days a month at Celtic Prop Hire, which hires out props to theatre, film and TV. I used to do quite a bit of acting but now the singing has taken over. I love the variety - it makes every week different. What sort of functions do you perform at? L: Gosh, all sorts. We’ve done weddings, festivals, nursing homes (they love all the vintage stuff), special events and dinner dances... We debuted at the City Hall. It was so nerve wracking! We traipsed up and down the corridors before we went on, wondering why we were putting ourselves through the agony. It all turned out really well though. J: We always get nervous before we go on, but it helps to keep us focussed. Some of our songs are very quick and wordy so we can’t take our eye off the ball. We currently have a regular Saturday night spot at the VIP Piano Lounge in Cardiff Bay. If anyone reading this wants to come and see us in action, they can.
Why did you decide to set up Gentlemen Prefer Blondes? J: Laura came up with the idea and gave me a call to see if I was interested, and I was. L: I met Joan 15 years ago when we performed in musical theatre together. When I decided that I wanted to get an act together Joan was the first person I thought of. Not only is she a great singer, we get on really well and have a laugh together. Why the name? L: Ah, this was Joan’s idea. It’s perfect because it evokes an age of glamour and fun, and we do have a lot of fun when we perform. J: And being brunettes, people remember the name because of the irony factor. Everyone’s first comment when they first see us is “But you’re not blondes!”
“I’m a bit of a Jackie of all trades.”
What style of music do you perform and why did you choose this? J: We sing songs with a swing element to them. Some of them are from the 40’s and 50’s, like songs by The Andrews Sisters, Doris Day, Frank Sinatra, but we also sing modern swing, like Imelda May and Caro Emerald, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy (I know, not many people of heard of that last one, but it’s a great foot-tapping number) What are your favourites songs that you sing and why? L: We only sing songs we love, but my favourite is usually the newest to the set.
L: So far we’ve been very lucky and not needed an agent. Gigs have come to us either by word of mouth or because someone has seen us perform and has booked us for their own event. Can you provide a short testimonial please? “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes more than lived up to their name. Sexy, sassy and gusty they did a great set which made our 2011 MAD Awards go with a real swing! Miss them and you’ll definitely miss out.” Sarah Manners PR & Marketing Manager, Wales & West Housing
J: Yes, and if we get tired of a song, we strike it from the set and replace it with something new and fresh. L: We’re learning new songs all the time. What are your ‘day jobs’? J: We’re both freelance which means that our schedules are flexible. I’ve got my own mobile hairdressing business. I’m able to arrange my business around picking up my daughter, Scarlett, from school, family life, and rehearsals with Laura. 19 11

‘Discreet, not high street’, is the idea behind the new Skin and Face Clinic just opened in Llandaff. Owner, Annie Cartwright MSc, RGN, IP, says it’s her mission to help you feel younger looking and leave the choice of whether you tell to you. We wanted to find out more…
Face Time Who are you and what do you do? My name’s Annie Cartwright and I’ve just opened a new Skin and Face Clinic in Llandaff. The reason I’m in business is because I want to help people look better, and hopefully feel better, about themselves.
You’d be surprised how many people come to me saying they still feel 25 on the inside, but this isn’t reflected in how they look on the outside, with people telling them they appear tired, angry or sad. The aim of my treatments is to achieve a natural look that is so good people can’t identify you’ve had work done. Typically my clients are told they look well after treatment. You still look like you… only a bit fresher! It should be your choice whether you tell people you’ve had treatment, it shouldn’t be obvious. So my job is to deliver treatments that ensure that choice remains yours. How long have you been working in medical aesthetics and what qualifications do you hold? I’ve worked in the field of facial aesthetics in Cardiff for 11 years, which is a lot of experience in this business. I’m a qualified Independent Nurse Prescriber (IP) with an MSc in Advanced Practice and keeping up to date with new clinical developments is important to me. You can look me up! I’m registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) and I’m a member of the British Association of Cosmetic Nurses (BACN), a paid professional
organization. I’ve also been appointed as a nurse ambassador for the industry, acting as a consultant and training other practitioners. I was recently appointed to the board of the Journal of Aesthetic Nursing, an academic publication for nurses working in this specialty.
What services do you offer? My most popular procedures are dermal filler injections to replace lost volume, as well as treatments to smooth out facial lines caused by muscle contraction, such as frown lines between the brows, and lines to the sides of the eyes, so-called ‘crows feet’, as well as a range of anti-aging and skin treatments. Who are your clients? I couldn’t tell you or I’d have to shoot you! I’m really fortunate, because most of my clients have been coming to me for years, and they tell their friends. The majority of them are aged from late 30’s to 60+ and they quite often say they want their outward expression, which has changed over time, to reflect how they feel on the inside.
I never cut corners on the quality of the products I use, and I keep up to date with all the latest technological advances. My new clinic is a dream to work in with everything to hand, putting the safety of clients first. Why did you decide to set up your clinic in Llandaff? Since I moved to Cardiff, I’ve lived in the Llandaff area. It’s got a lovely village feel to it and it’s a great place to be. I’ve often thought I would love to work here, but it’s all about finding the right place, which for me is about being discreet, but not high street! Thankfully, the right premises came along, in the right place, at just the right time. Do you ever say no to clients wanting treatment? My business is all about results, so I do sometimes decline treatment, especially if there is doubt that the treatment requested will deliver the results they are looking for, or if there doesn’t appear to be any clinical justification for treatment. In these cases the money is better left in their pocket.
What geographical areas will you cover? I have clients who travel from West Wales, Kent and even a few from overseas, but the majority are more local. Do you treat men and women? Yes. Whether men are working on a building site or in the board room, many still want to defy the ageing process and it’s my job to make the results look as natural as possible. What sets you apart from other practitioners in your industry? For me this business is all about people and getting quality results. If I can help someone to feel better about the way they look, and this helps build their confidence, that is a real motivator for me. 27

“ I’m Lucy Reed and, as a Dental Hygienist, it’s my job to help you keep your mouth clean and healthy by looking out for, and treating, the early signs of gum disease.”
How Clean Is Even though it may not be at the top of your agenda, it’s really important to know the true health of your gums. Gum disease isn’t like tooth decay; it doesn’t hurt and can get very advanced if it’s not treated early enough. There is also an undisputed link between gum disease and systemic disease such as diabetes and heart disease. Once you’ve got periodontitis, you can only really slow it down with treatment, so the idea of using a dental hygienist like me on a regular basis, is that prevention is much better than cure! How long have you been in the industry and what qualifications do you hold? My experience dates back to 1992 when I got my Diploma in Dental Hygiene, so I’ve been working in the industry for twenty one years. So far I’ve done over 100,000 treatments and I’ve kept up to date with all the latest clinical advances. Before I became a Dental Hygienist, I worked as a Dental Nurse for three years.
What services do you offer? My clients find me a really useful ‘one-stop’ shop for the whole range of hygiene advice and treatments including: routine scale and polish, tea, coffee, red wine, or tobacco stain removal, teeth whitening, provided by my visiting Dentist, gum assessment, denture cleaning, children’s hygiene visits, implant maintenance, fresh breath clinic, pre-wedding cosmetic cleaning, and free oral cancer screening with every appointment. Who are your clients? It may surprise you to know that around 40% of people don’t regularly visit the dentist, but many of them still want to visit a hygienist to make sure they have a regular scale and polish, and ensure their gums stay healthy. I think many of these people will enjoy the fact that my new clinic is local and accessible, and my regular hygiene treatments will give them peace of mind, especially as NHS dentistry in Wales is becoming harder to find! 32
What geographical areas will you cover? My clients come from across Cardiff, and from as far afield as West Wales and Weston-Super-Mare. Basically, if my clients can get to Llandaff, I’m always delighted to treat them!
What sets you apart from other practitioners in your industry? I’ve got a reputation for being very kind and gentle during treatments, and I won’t be judgmental about the condition of your mouth. As well as having twenty one years experience in the industry, my ethos has always been to offer a thorough, high quality service, with no short cuts! This is why anyone who visits the Coach House Clinics will enjoy a calm, tranquil environment where they are not rushed in and out. Everyone will have a minimum thirty minute extended appointment, and access to top of the range equipment, at no extra cost.
The true health of your gums might surprise you, but Lucy Reed, Dental Hygienist with twenty one years experience in the industry, is willing to offer her expert advice, after opening the first independent Dental Hygiene Clinic on our doorstep in Llandaff!
Your Mouth? “ I wouldn’t go to anyone else. In a nutshell, she always puts me at ease and I feel 100% confident that I will receive the best hygiene treatment from Lucy.” Sue, Cardiff I’m also celebrating being the first Independent Dental Hygienist in South Wales, which means people can have direct access to competitively priced treatments when they want, without the inconvenience of having to be referred by a dentist. Why did you decide to set up your clinic in Llandaff? Llandaff is like my home! I’ve lived close by for many years and my children go to the local school. Opening my clinic here has helped me to achieve one of my dreams, which is to live and work locally, in a thriving business community.
Can clients walk in off the street to see you or do they need to be referred by a dentist? Yes, you can visit my Clinic when you like and you don’t need to be referred by a dentist. This is because, on 1 May 2013, the General Dental Council removed the legal barriers that made all Dental Hygienists require a written referral from a dentist in order to provide dental hygiene care.

What clients say “ I have been a patient of Lucy’s for many years. She has a professional approach, which is supportive, caring and reassuring. She always explains clearly about the treatment I require and I feel that Lucy is genuinely concerned for the welfare of her patients. She encourages a partnership with the individual to provide a mutually beneficial outcome. I feel involved and proactive in my dental health. Lucy is a credit to her profession.” Jane

Gareth Edwards CBE is one of Wales’s rugby greats. During his career, from 1967 to 1978, Gareth held 53 Welsh Caps, but how does Gareth spend his time now? Amongst other interests, he is proud to be an ambassador for The Clink Restaurant, Cardiff. We caught up with Gareth to find out more.
The Clink
How do you spend your time now? I’m acting in several businesses in the Cardiff area as a Non Executive Director. I am involved with Cardiff Blue RFC as a Non Executive Director. I have my TV involvement with Welsh Channel SC4 for rugby and am also involved with several charity causes. What do you do to relax? I love fishing. I enjoy fly fishing for salmon and trout. I try to play golf as often as I am able to. How would you like to be remembered? I will leave that for others to decide. If you could change one thing about Wales, what would it be? Make it bigger!
Why did you become involved with The Clink restaurant? I am passionate about rehabilitation projects and about decreasing the re-offending rate in Cardiff and believe that these people deserve to have a second chance. Is this your first time behind bars? I have had several visits “behind bars”. One was an interview on prison radio where prisoners interviewed me about rugby. I told them stories of the team and I back in the days when I played and represented my country. I also attended the first anniversary of The Clink at HMP Cardiff where I presented catering and front of house (customer service) awards to deserving prisoners in training. Have you eaten here? If so, what do you think of it? I have eaten at The Clink on a few occasions and was impressed with the quality and presentation of the food. I think it is a great opportunity for prisoners to experience first-hand what would be expected of them in any other restaurant. I thought the menu was well planned and, on the occasions I have been there, found the atmosphere very pleasant and quality of the food very good.
What was your most memorable moment playing rugby? There are so many and it’s difficult to choose the best, but you never forget the first time you play for your country. I am very fortunate to share so many moments in my career, but I would say the Barbarians versus New Zealand in 1973 and playing on the winning Lions side on two overseas tours of New Zealand in 1971 and South Africa in 1974 would be there at the top of my most memorable moments. What do you think of the state of the game at the moment? It’s a hugely physical and demanding game that requires the utmost professionalism in its preparation. Are they any players that stand out to you? Daniel Carter of New Zealand has been a master of his craft for many years. Leigh Halfpenny has shown us once again that you don’t have to be a giant to survive this game and Johnny Wilkinson for his longevity and class and Richie McCaw of New Zealand. 36
The Clink Charity The aim of The Clink Charity is to reduce re-offending rates of ex-offenders by training and placing graduates upon their release into the hospitality industry. The charity represents a genuine opportunity for change, offering prisoners the chance to gain food preparation, food service and cleaning qualifications as well as experience within an exciting, operational business and in-depth guidance to find full-time employment within the hospitality industry upon release. The Clink Charity operates the Clink Restaurant at HMP High Down, HMP Cardiff and HMP Brixton in partnership with Her Majesty’s Prison Service. The Clink Charity aims to open ten more restaurants by 2017. To book a meal at The Clink, Cardiff visit www.theclinkrestaurant.com
Being less than five miles from Newport and three miles from the M4 motorway, the Best Western Plus Parkway Hotel and Spa in Cwmbran is ideal for a leisure or business break. We sent our roving reporter Chris Howell to find out more.
The PArkway Hotel & SPA
The Parkway boasts an executive residents lounge, 6 conference rooms, Colonial Leisure Club and Spa, Yonka beauty rooms, restaurant and lounge dining areas plus picturesque gardens and extended patios. Winner of the Trip Advisor Certificate of Excellence Award & the Best Western’s National Quality Award. An AA accredited 4* hotel with complimentary high speed free WIFI (30MB) & complimentary car parking.
How were you greeted? With a warm reception from General Manager, Kerry Jennings who took time in showing me the hotel, its conference facilities, spa and leisure club, The Colonial Club. How did you find the staff? They were all very friendly and made me feel completely at home. A real change from the sometimes impersonal attitude from larger hotels I’ve encountered. How was your room? I was lucky enough to be offered The Brecon Suite which was huge. It had a separate lounge, bathroom and bedroom. Cleanliness is godliness as far as I’m concerned but there were no worries on this front as it was spotless. There were some lovely complimentary toiletries, a super fluffy bathrobe and some delicious nibbles waiting for me.
How would you rate the facilities? Definitely five star. How was the food? The restaurant was full, which was a good sign. The menu choice was excellent, with dishes such as roast duck, braised belly pork and lemon sole to choose from and the waiting staff very attentive. After such a fantastic dinner, I didn’t think I’d want much for breakfast but the buffet style offering was too tempting not to. Did you sample The Colonial Club? Yes, it would have been rude not to! I was very impressed with the Club and the cafe bar area adjacent to it. I had a lovely back, neck and shoulder massage which, even though I was relaxed as I was enjoying a lovely break, whatever tension might have been in my body just melted away. 37
So overall you were impressed? Absolutely. This is a family owned hotel that goes the extra mile for its clients. It even has a calendar of events with tribute acts. I understand that the afternoon teas are very popular as are the spa breaks. Having stayed here, I can well understand why.

There’s a hint of excitement in the air. Spring has definitely sprung, growth in the garden is gathering pace and the arrival of spring blossom is sure to put a smile on our faces.
Spring into Action
We may have already seen a hint of sunshine and, if you listen to the latest weather reports, we’re due for a heat wave this spring/summer. As we all know too well, forecasters’ predictions are never set in stone. We live in Wales after all! Nevertheless, we must remain optimistic of what might come in spring and early summer and, when it arrives, you want to be ready for a life outdoors. There’s no time for resting on your laurels when it comes to garden maintenance, if the anticipation of enjoying a garden that has burst into life on a sunny day excites you, or if you crave all year round colour and interest in your garden, then you had better start to make things happen (if you haven’t already). This is nothing new to Pugh’s Garden Centre in Radyr as they have been patiently planning and preparing for their customers.
Most obvious is the new, impressive cafe, which has been cleverly titled, The Watering Can. This has truly been a family project, with Helen Pugh coming up with the mood board, colour scheme and the feel for how she wanted the cafe to look and daughter Nicola’s partner Matthew Harding, who has a construction company, delivering on build. The build is simply stunning, with roof timbers in Welsh Oak. The toilet facilities are quite impressive too and follow the same clean, contemporary feel of the cafe.
The cafe, which can seat 150 in total, with its indoor and outdoor areas is open for morning coffee, breakfast and light snacks and lunchtimes for light lunches and drinks. Most of the meals are cooked on site and, if you do happen to choose to eat outside, you get a stunning view of Castell Coch. So pleased are they with the build, (and rightly so), that they have formed Pugh’s Construction, offering building projects to domestic and commercial properties - and other garden centres! Pugh’s really is a one-stop-shop as they have an increasing family of concessions which means there’s plenty of treats in store for pets, aquatic fans, camping and outdoor enthusiasts, equine aficionados, and those seeking the latest fashions for the home, garden and wardrobe.
“The cafe, can seat 150 in total, with its indoor and outdoor areas.”
So, what’s been happening at the Garden Centre lately? 40
What gardening tips do they suggest this May? n Planting hanging baskets. n Moving plants outside the greenhouse n Sowing pots of delicate herbs such as basil for the windowsill n Buying beddings plants such as petunias n Planning to plant tender vegetable crops such as runner beans and courgettes n Bank holiday barbecues – have you got enough gas and a barbecue-set fit for the job? n Relaxing in the garden – are your loungers and garden furniture ready for action? Instant gardening Pugh’s take on the hard work for you. For instant colour and dramatic displays, just choose a pot, set a budget and they will do the rest for you. What you’ll have is a colour container full of seasonal plants that you can take away, after relaxing with a snack in The Watering Can while it’s being prepared. Prices are very reasonable and include the pot!
If you fancy a show of large specimen plants in containers, don’t let the size put you off, as they offer a planting and delivery service. For general gardening advice, or to find out especially what should be planted when, just ask one of the friendly team at the Village – they’ll be happy to help. And don’t forget, you’ll need a good pair of secateurs, gardening gloves, tools and compost.
“Pugh’s is a one-stop-shop, there’s plenty of treats in store for pets aquatic fans, camping and outdoor enthusiasts, equine aficionados, and those seeking the latest fashions for the home, garden and wardrobe.” 41

When you’re a TV personality, there is an expectancy for you to look the part. As a BBC Science and Wildlife presenter on the popular Rhys Jones’s Wildlife Patrol, Rhys certainly does make an impression, with his presenting skills and also his style. We asked Rhys where he liked to shop and why.
Wild at Heart The problem that I immediately encountered was that if I was trying to buy off the peg then suits that fitted my shoulders hung on me like a sack. Most of the suits I was trying on assumed that somebody with shoulders my size must be overweight and hence the jacket would hang shapelessly off my waist. What I like about Hawkes, is they cater for a more athletic figure. It’s no surprise that many current and former professional rugby players head straight to Hawkes knowing that their ‘V’ shaped physique will not only be accommodated, but flattered. I was being fitted for a new suit alongside Mathew Rees and Bradley Davies a few days ago, and it’s no secret that Hawkes is also a favorite haunt of Jonathon Davies. These days I wouldn’t go anywhere else when looking to purchase a new suit or jacket, Hawkes after all are known for a keen eye and first class delivery.
Where do you shop? I shop at Hawkes for both work and pleasure. I find the style impeccable with a wide range of exceptional quality jackets, shoes and suits. It’s a unique purchasing experience with the quality of the garment only matched by the professionalism, service and knowledge of the staff. How would you describe your style in and out of work? When I’m filming, I normally find myself in field clothes, so on days when I’m presenting on stage, or delivering a talk, it’s nice to turn things on their head and present a sharper look. If you are going to be working in a suit, then make sure it’s one you want to be seen in.
For me style and a fresh individual look are everything. I don’t like to blend in with the wallpaper, I like to be seen in something that people remember and positively comment on the next time they see you. What clothes do you enjoy wearing? When I’m home, I’m definitely a t-shirt and jeans type of person, but when I’m on stage, I try to dress to impress. What is it you enjoy about shopping at Hawkes? When I started presenting for the BBC, I had to make sure that I was also dressed the part. In addition to actually presenting on the television, there were also an enormous amount of appointments to keep and talks to deliver, and I was determined to look my best. 44
What do you like about your life? I love my life because it is the product and reward of hard and honest work. From humble beginnings on a council estate in Fairwater, Cardiff; from leaving school at 16; I’m now a BBC Science and Wildlife presenter and a Lecturer at Cardiff University. I don’t think I could have dreamt of being where I am now when I was a small child, and I still have to pinch myself that I’m travelling the world and presenting BBC television series that are viewed by 12 million viewers. Although perhaps nothing will ever surprise me more than being this voted 49th sexiest man in Wales! I’m pretty sure Hawkes also deserve a big thank you for that one! Beyond the Border, one of the world’s leading storytelling festivals, is back again at St Donat’s Castle, near Llantwit Major, from 4-6 July, encompassing storytelling, but poetry, music, singing, theatre, circus, puppets, films and much more…
Beyond The Border
When we think of St Donats Castle, the word ‘fairy-tale’ does tend to come to mind. And every two years that description becomes particularly pertinent, when the Vale’s beautiful castle becomes the setting for the retelling of real fairy tales and legends. Year-round, St Donats castle is home to UWC Atlantic College, an international residential school with 350 students from over 90 different countries, famed for its International Baccalaureate experience. But for one weekend of the year, its ordered gardens are transformed by a sea of brightly coloured tents filled with the world’s finest storytellers and its paths are trodden by two thousand eager audience members, who come to hear some of the most remarkable and memorable tales humanity has produced. This is Beyond the Border - the leading international festival of storytelling in the UK, and with a worldwide reputation.
Beyond the Border was founded at St Donats Arts Centre in 1993, and is now celebrating its 21st birthday. For all that time it has dedicated itself to exploring and celebrating the world’s rich heritage of oral storytelling. From 4-6 July this summer, people from across the globe will gather to the castle for this festival on our doorstep, to experience the huge range of stories and artistic experiences on offer. This year explores themes ranging from the stories and music of Scandinavia, Dylan Thomas at 100, African Music and Story, Celtic Myth, Memories of WW1 and much more. Storytelling and music goes on from dawn until dusk across nine different venues, with over a hundred performances. In between the bursting programme of stories, there are numerous ways for audience members to relax, be fed and entertained with a bustling marketplace of craft stalls and workshops, as well as a wide range of food available, and a famous real ale bar. 52
It’s a wonderful way to experience a local treasure, to combine affection for our stunning coastline with an enriching artistic experience which unlocks doors into other worlds. Black Sheep specialise in loft conversions and building solutions. We met Head of Construction, Keith Davies, at St David’s Hotel in Cardiff Bay to find out why this particular building business wants to stand out from the crowd.
Black Sheep
a job is started and left untouched for weeks on end, or where emails or calls are left unanswered for days on end. We take pride in our work. We’re confident that the small details will add up to a big difference – whether it is cleaning up at the end of every day, to decorating your loft conversion so that all you need to choose are is the furniture/fixtures; you will be surprised at how many quotations do not include this.
How’s the building business? Spring and summer is traditionally busy. The expense of Christmas is, hopefully, in the past and, with the weather turning, people are generally more optimistic - so work on larger projects such as a loft conversion, extension or remodelling is beginning. With drier weather on the way, we are also finding that our carpentry skills are in demand for external projects like decking.
Why did you call yourselves Black Sheep? Well, we’re not the black sheep of our families but, when we created the brand, we did want an a-typical identity for a building company and one that showcases our Welsh roots. We also hope that Black Sheep makes people pause for thought and consider what their expectations are from a building company.
What inspired you to create the Black Sheep brand? A good tradesperson is hard to find. We have brought together a workforce, with decades of experience to create a building company that, we believe, is second to none. We wanted to make the process of finding a good builder easier. It’s all come about because, as professionals, we have the same problems as private customers when they’re looking for good trades-people so we decided to do it ourselves.
How did Black Sheep come about? We created the Black Sheep pen through personal experiences with certain unreliable builders. When we eventually found Keith, our Head of Construction, we immediately noticed the difference the simple things made to our customer experience – regular and clear communication, confidence to test our expressions of what we wanted and to suggest changes where the end product would benefit from them, and of course we noted the quality of an end product that was on time and on budget.
City Life readers will see our vans around the Vale and, if they do, please pop in to our sites to see the quality and type of work that we are undertaking. How do you retain good trades-people? By looking after them. We treat our workforce better. We pay them more. We look after them. That way you hold on to good people – they want to work for us and they work better because of that. Our workforce have worked in London and internationally. They are among the very best in the industry.
We felt that we could bring corporate values and experience to the business to take it to the next level; and leave Keith to do what he is best at in delivering an end product that customers are delighted with. And so the Black Sheep pen was born. What makes Black Sheep different? We apply a customer focussed experience to what is a traditionally ‘hit and miss’ relationship - we have all had experiences where builders do not turn up when they are expected to, or where 60
The directors, and driving force, behind Black Sheep have experience working for in the corporate sector which means we bring that management style to our projects. Black Sheep have put together a highly experienced team who have bought into the corporate culture. Our ethos is Quality: Reliable: Design: We aim not only to meet, but to exceed our customers’ expectations. What next for Black Sheep? We have recently secured the services of Rebecca Lewis-Chapman, our Retained Architect to ensure that we can provide an end-to-end design to construction service. We are delighted to be exploring new opportunities with the support of Rebecca and her team. We are always looking to broaden and deepen our pool of talent and would love to hear from skilled trades-people within South Wales - or complimentary businesses such as architects and surveyors. The economy is certainly beginning to grow and Black Sheep wants to ensure that customers who want to build, renovate or repair their homes have a company on hand that they can depend on.

For many women, losing weight by the conventional dieting methods is just not achievable. If you have tried every diet under the sun and you can’t seem to shift the weight then here’s something you might want to try. Dr. Helen McCarthy tells us more about her approach to permanent weight loss without dieting.
Positively Hungry
Do you: n Love food but hate dieting? n Want to lose weight permanently? For those of us who enjoy good food, dieting can lead to feelings of deprivation and loss of enjoyment.
Dieting usually fails because 1. The way you eat on a particular diet is very different from the way you normally eat. This demands effort and energy which you may not have time for. 2. All diets work against the systems in the body which regulate appetite and eating and therefore put physiological and psychological pressure on the dieter to eat. 3. People have natural inbuilt blocks to changing established habits, even if they are adept at dealing with external challenges. This is recognised in many diets but is not effectively addressed. You can lose weight without major changes to your lifestyle Permanent weight loss requires permanent changes in eating habits. But these changes don’t have to be drastic. In fact, changing habits is easier when done in manageable steps. Also, with Positively Hungry© there is no change to the types of foods you eat. If your diet is unbalanced, you improve the balance.
Work with, not against, your body’s systems for regulating eating and appetite Weight loss is much easier when you work with rather than against your biology. When you do this, you minimise the physiological pressure involved. Tuning in to what your gut is telling you about how hungry or full you are allows your eating to be governed naturally. When you wait to eat until you are definitely hungry and stop eating as soon as you are just full, you can lose weight.
Deal with internal barriers to success from the start Psychological factors which don’t cause a problem in other areas of life can stubbornly hamper efforts to lose weight. If you find that the simple steps below don’t work for you, Positively Hungry© can help with simple techniques to overcome these “saboteurs” permanently. Steps to achieving permanent weight loss Step 1: Use the Positive Hunger (PH) Scale© printed below whenever you think of eating. For a free credit card sized copy of the scale, email info@positivelyhungry. com with your name and postal address. Step 2: Wait until you are -3 (definitely hungry) on the scale before eating. This will mean tolerating mild, gentle hunger. When you are -3, it is time to eat.
Step 3: When you eat a meal, keep an eye on your PH number. Stop eating when you reach +3 and do something else.
Positively Hungry was developed by Dr Helen McCarthy, Consultant Clinical Psychologist and Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society who has 25 years’ experience working as a Clinical Psychologist. She has a B.Sc. Honours degree in Experimental Psychology from the University of Durham and a Doctorate in the Psychology of eating disorders from the University of Oxford. Dr McCarthy trained as a Clinical Psychologist within the British National Health Service. She now works in private practice and offers individual Positively Hungry consultations in Cardiff, Harley Street and Bristol. Visit www.positivelyhungry.com where you can book a consultation with Dr McCarthy in person or via Skype and read more about the approach. Positively Hungry© is a trademark of Dr. Helen McCarthy and is copyright. Positively Hungry Open Morning Cardiff Dr Helen McCarthy will be giving a presentation on Positively Hungry, the radical alternative to losing weight which offers control over eating with freedom from dieting. This free session* is open to everyone who is interested in hearing about a new approach to losing weight and maintaining weight without dieting. On: Saturday 17th May 2014 from 11am to 12 noon At: Park Plaza Hotel, Greyfriars Road Cardiff CF10 3AL *To book your free place please phone 029 2076 4611

In 2012 I met Lee Bryce at St David’s Hotel in Cardiff Bay. Lee outlined his vision for his new estate agency. He painted a picture of a bold, dynamic company that was service-led and had a strong connection with the Cardiff community. We meet eighteen months on – has Lee achieved his goal?
Hot Property How’s business? It’s been an amazing time – busy, challenging, exciting and rewarding but, most of all, enjoyable. There’s no doubt that the property market is starting to gain momentum again. We can’t get enough properties at the moment. Areas like Rhiwbina, Whitchurch, Heath and Llanishen are particularly buoyant with Lisvane, Cyncoed, Pontcanna and Penylan also very much in demand. What sets your service apart? As a family business we understand the day-to-day commitments that work and family command, and that free time is very precious to us all. We created a bespoke service that operates outside of ‘normal office hours’ so that we can fit in with our clients’ lifestyles. For example, we offer: • Early morning and late evening appointments; 7am – 10pm • We’re active seven days a week • We provide professional and truly independent advice • We support customers through every aspect of the buying, selling or rental process • We create a bespoke marketing strategy for each property.
All this combines to create an unrivalled service that achieves results and ensures client satisfaction. Our website has plenty of testimonials to the quality of our service. In what other ways do you feel you’re different? Yes, we sell and let property but, ultimately, we’re finding homes for people. We offer all the services you’d expect but with our own, unique twist. We’ve embraced technology – we promote intelligently using conventional advertising, social media and the internet. Our website showcases high-definition walkthroughs of properties. Customers deserve a high level of service. Our global database extends across the world and we have relationships with people in Australia, Singapore, Hong Kong, China, America, Spain, Germany, Dubai and almost everywhere in-between. The days of marketing property to a local-only audience is over. The market place is global now. We’re proud of our Welshness – supporting the local community is the key focus of our business – we offer a bilingual service to ensure our Welsh language customers are looked after.
“ The days of marketing property to a local-only audience is over. The market place is global now. 73
You talk a lot about community. What do you feel you contribute? Our ethos is to support the local community and help others where we can. We donate 10% of all our completed sales fees to the Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospital Wales and we’re very proud to be the Under 10s (boys and girls) team sponsor of the Heath Park Rangers for the 2013/14 season ahead. As avid football fans we are delighted to be involved. How do you see the business expanding? We’ll continue to build a great reputation by delivering exceptional service to our clients. We try to keep it simple and do the basic things well. It’s worked extremely well for us, and our clients, so far.

The L asT Word When exercise and diet doesn’t shift those unwanted lumps and bumps, what else can you do? We chat to Alice Kingdom, proprietor and Aesthetic Therapist at Ice Body Sculpting to find out more about Cryolipolysis. What is Cryolipolysis? Cryolipolysis, nick named “Fat Freezing” or Cryo Lipo, is a treatment for stubborn areas of fat that are resistant to diet and exercise. When fat cells are exposed to precise cooling, they crystalise and trigger a process of natural removal that gradually reduces the thickness of the fat layer. Between 20-40% of the fat cells can be reduced in a single session. The natural removal of fat cells over time results in gradual but very noticeable permanent fat layer reduction.
Is the treatment painful? We often get asked this but it isn’t at all. We are the only clinic in Wales to use the newest technology which speeds treatment times, and reduces the chances of any discomfort, our applicators combine light therapy to tighten the skin – also unique to our system. People regularly fall asleep during their session, which goes to show just how comfortable it is.... and of course they want to know if it works, which it does. There are several large clinical studies citing its effectiveness
What are the benefits of this treatment? It is completely non-invasive, there are no needles, no incisions, no need for anaesthesia.
Who is it suitable for? Both men and women looking to reduce and refine areas of fatty tissue. The most common areas to treat are the stomach, love handles and thighs, although we do treat other areas like the back and arms too. Where do you operate from? We have a dedicated clinic based in Cardiff, we also hold clinics in a number of health, fitness and beauty locations across the city and the Vale by special arrangement.
Where do your customers come from? All over the UK but most tend to be from the south west and, of course, Cardiff. Where do you live and who is at home with you? I live near Rhoose, with my husband and our two year old son. What do you like about where you live? I love the diversity of Cardiff and the Vale. The city has a lovely feel to it with the Castle, and great shopping, yet we are only a short distance from some beautiful beaches and unspoilt countryside. The option of outdoor activities available make it a great place to bring up a family. What makes you happy? Professionally, there is nothing like receiving a thank you email or a before/ after photo from a happy customer. Personally, I love to spend time with my family, which like for so many, without their support, especially my husband’s, our company would not be as successful as it is. Sum yourself up in three words .... Dedicated, Loyal, Passionate You may not know this but … I’ve done a total of 11 skydives including 9 solo dives, and I once represented Britain in an European Drama Competition.
