WELCOME

Well, who would have believed it? It’s been ten amazing years since we launched our first issue of Vale Life magazine. This came about after a bottle of wine with good friends. They suggested that with our joint skills of graphic design and public relations, we could start our own magazine. What a journey it’s been! City Life Cardiff came shortly after. In the early years we accomplished this with just three people. It wasn’t easy! Two years ago we published Wye Life and, more recently, West Life. We quickly realised that we needed help. So, we have become employers to salespeople, designers, copywriters and distribution people.

We’re a great little team and we couldn’t do it all without them. Not forgetting hearing from our advertisers that the work we do helps make their tills ring. It really doesn’t get any better.

We are continuing to grow and will soon be launching our latest addition, Gower Life, with further titles on the drawing board.

We still get the same thrill when seeing someone read one of our latest issues as we did when our first magazine was on the streets and can’t see that changing.

As anyone in business will know, running one is hard. You never switch off, you work much longer hours and are always juggling the work/life balance (which isn’t always achieved!).

Onwards and upwards as they say! See you in the autumn. Jennifer Hobbs-Roberts Editor 07766 106 701 jennifer@goodlifepublishing.co.uk uk.linkedin.com/in/jenniferhobbsroberts

I know it sounds cliched, but being able to meet so many interesting people, and being able to provide careers for hardworking people makes it all worthwhile.

Missed the last issue? We hold a small number of each issue in stock so if you do need a pristine copy, please telephone us or email jennifer@goodlifepublishing.co.uk. Hopefully we’ll have the issue you want (but we cannot guarantee it). Each back issue costs £5 including postage and packing. Yes it’s free. Priceless actually! City Life is distributed free through a wide variety of outlets across Cardiff and beyond and is given away free of charge on the understanding that we are happy for it to be lent, passed on, given to friends and generally read until it falls apart. At which point, you can recycle it and we’d be delighted if you did. Green is good The pulp used in the production of the paper City Life is printed on is sourced from sustainably managed Scandinavian tree farms and utilises an elementary chlorine-free bleaching process.

We’re very sociable! We’re on the web! www.citylifecardiff.co.uk Like on Facebook! www.facebook.com/CityLifeCardiff Follow on Twitter! @CityLifeCardiff #CityLifeCardiff

There’s much to celebrate this summer at Rhiwbina Dental, the thriving family dental practice in the heart of Cardiff ’s garden village. City Life paid the talented team a visit - there’s certainly much to smile about.

R HIWBINA DENTAL CELEBRATING 20 YEARS OF EXCELLENCE

2017 marks 20 years of Rhiwbina Dental, so on 3rd June the team held a party at The Pines to celebrate with their friends and family. A great time was had by all and it was a fitting tribute to the standards that the whole team set themselves.

The original Rhiwbina Dental Surgery was established well over forty years ago in Rhiwbina village. The thriving family practice was taken over by Nick Claydon in 1997 and has continued to grow with the addition of many extra services and another practice, Rhiwbina Dental at The Pines, during that time. Rhiwbina Dental at the Pines is stateof-the-art; it honestly has to be seen to be believed. The clinic was established in 2010 and is a rare Georgian gem situated alongside the ancient white church in Whitchurch, Cardiff. It’s beautifully walled and landscaped gardens welcome you to the practice with an air of serenity; it’s easy to access and offers convenient on-site parking.

Even the interior of The Pines has been thoughtfully designed to stimulate your senses with intriguing works of art and sculptures designed to inspire and delight (we had to double check we were actually at a dental clinic!) The professional team at Rhiwbina Dental offer a complete dental service, from preventative care and hygiene, to restorative and cosmetic dentistry treatments and surgery. They’re especially well known for their dental implants, not just in Cardiff but worldwide. Their award winning services are available at their two private dental clinics and they’re proud to be accredited by prestigious Denplan Excel. 6

The staff at Rhiwbina Dental are extremely proud of both their practices and the high standards that they set themselves in all areas of dentistry, and it shows. They recognize that their patients have a great deal of choice for their dental care, and they greatly appreciate the commitment that their patients show in them. Congratulations Rhiwbina Dental – and here’s to the next 20 years!

It takes seven second for us to judge another person when we first meet them, so how we dress is vitally important. This is especially important when you’re in the public eye. Nobody knows this better than Professor Roger Scully, academic, author and TV commentator.

POLITICAL

CORRECTNESS

Hawkes owner, Russell Scott-Lawson

It was actually Roger’s fiancee who suggested he might benefit from a fresh eye when it came to his wardrobe. So already being aware of Hawkes in Morgan Arcade, a visit was made and the changes have given Roger more confidence. We met Roger to find out a little more. Please tell us a little bit about your job? I’m Professor of Political Science at Cardiff University and Director of the Wales Governance Centre. My areas of expertise are UK elections, public opinion, and European and British politics. I’m a regular commentator for BBC News, LBC, ITV, Talk Radio, ABC, Radio 5 Live, BBC World Service and on General Election night this year I was working with Sky News on College Green in Westminister, analysing the results as they came in. I’ve written several academic books and papers over the years and I’ve just got a book deal for my first non-academic

book which is due for publication in early 2018. When did you know that you wanted to be a an academic? I didn’t have a career plan when I started university as a student. But I got so interested in the subject that I was studying that I wanted to continue learning about it. I ended up going to America to study for a PhD (at Ohio State University); that gave me a great training which helped me land my first job as a Lecturer at Brunel University in London in 1997. I enjoy teaching my students, and doing lectures and talks across the country, including, most recently talking to big companies about the implications if Brexit. I’ve been lucky that my job has enabled me to travel across Europe, America, Canada and Asia. How important is how you look in your industry? University professors are not famed 16

for how we dress, but I think, in all walks of life, how you dress and how you look does affect how you feel and gives you confidence. Given the outcome of Trump, Brexit and the recent UK election, do you think the political landscape in this country has become more interesting and therefore easier or more interesting to report on? Many of the major political events in the last couple of years have challenged things that analysts have long held to be true. For instance, people studying elections in Britain have long believed that not much changes during a general election campaign, and that divided or left-wing parties can’t prosper electorally. So how do we explain the success of the Labour general election campaign in closing the huge leads the Conservatives

had when Theresa May called the election? That one may take some puzzling out. How did you vote? One part of my job is to analyse opinion polls and elections. So, although I do vote in elections, I don’t ever disclose how I vote. Nor do I offer support between elections for any particular party. All I am willing to say is that I have, over the years, voted for five different political parties. What made you want to change the way you look? My fiancee wanted to see me wearing better-fitting clothes: not so much because she wanted a stylish man on her arm, but for me to have even more of a spring in my step. Why did you choose Hawkes? I went into Hawkes with my fiance one Saturday, and looked at some things they had. I was immediately impressed by the quality of the clothes they had there.

But, more than that, I valued their advice, and their determination to get things right. Russell takes such pride in his work and has a great eye for detail: he simply wouldn’t let me leave with my first suit from Hawkes until it fitted perfectly. What do you like most about your look? I like to wear well-fitting and tailored clothes that have a classic look about them. When you wear something that looks right and feels right, you walk with your head held a little higher, and your back a little straighter.

“I valued their advice, and their determination to get things right. Russell takes such pride in his work and has a great eye for detail.” 17

Would you recommend Hawkes to friends, family and colleagues? Yes, I would and have recommended Hawkes unreservedly. They supply superb quality clothing with a personalised service that will keep you going back, that includes telling you that some things don’t work: Russell is quite willing to say what does and doesn’t suit you, and I can rely on Hawkes to always have something different for me. My wardrobe certainly isn’t boring: from weekend wear to my dinner jackets, it’s all now from Hawkes. Hard to believe that Crumbs, in the truly gorgeous Morgan Arcade, is approaching its 50th anniversary. Owner Paul claims it was the first vegetarian/vegan restaurant in Cardiff and is still ‘top of the veggie pops’ in 2017. I can remember discovering Crumbs in the early eighties and have been a fan ever since. If you love veggie food, you’ll love Crumbs.

VEGTASTIC CRUMBS

So with my early eighties swagger, I call in to try one of their now infamous breakfasts in honour of their fast approaching 50th anniversary. The Crumbs breakfast is served up until 11.30am, giving customers plenty of time to enjoy a healthy and wholesome fuel stop before hitting the shops or work. But what to choose? It all looks so good. I could go for a cereal bowl of either brans or mueslis (gluten free option available) served with fresh fruit and yoghurt, but I fancy something a bit more substantial so, I could either choose the vegan porridge with mixed fruit, eggs Florentine, scrambled eggs on toast with spinach, or the homemade Americanstyle hash browns topped with fried eggs. There’s a fab selection of teas, coffees, soft drinks and a good selection of freshly squeezed carrot, apple and orange juices to choose from but it was the orange juice served in a cute jam jar that won the day.

Crumbs has always been a firm favourite for lunch due to its plentiful, super healthy salad bowls, Mediterranean falafels, sweet potato pakoras, seeds and olives, homemade quiches, lasagnes and pies. Not forgetting the gluten free and vegan soups, vegetarian curry and chilli. For those just wanting a coffee there’s a to-die-for selection of vegan, gluten free and organic cakes to tempt should your resolve weaken. After the purses have been sufficiently depleted it’s back to Crumbs for an afternoon tea of home-made scones with clotted cream and jam and a cup of tea - traditional or speciality.

The restaurant is bigger than it looks from outside too. So if it looks busy inside, take the stairs at the rear to the first floor where you’ll find even more seating space which has a slightly different vibe to downstairs. Don’t just take my word for how good Crumbs is. A quick visit to TripAdvisor will reassure you that this shrine to veggie is a must visit. So perhaps I’ll see you at Crumbs on your next shopping trip to Cardiff. You don’t have to be veggie to love Crumbs, but it helps. Vegtastic!

Why does the food taste so good at Crumbs? The produce is fresh and locally sourced, so all of the food is full of flavour and goodness. Also no meat is stored on the premises which, for vegetarians or vegans, is paramount.

“ Crumbs has always been a firm favourite for lunch... Mediterranean falafels, sweet potato pakoras, seeds and olives, homemade quiches, lasagnes and pies.” 18

TESTIMONIALS

What you like and love about Crumbs... “Amazing for vegans!” My sister and I went to Crumbs for lunch after hearing good things about it. We are both vegans and were really impressed with the range of vegan options. We had the spiced chickpea and spinach pie with salad and hummus - it was amazing! There was also a large selection of vegan cakes, brownies and shortbreads. We had one piece of chocolate cake and one piece of carrot cake - both were delicious. The staff were also very friendly and welcoming. I’ll definitely be going back!

“Great for veggies, vegans and other humans too!” Had a lovely breakfast here yesterday followed by the best vegan cake I’ve ever had - Morello cherry and vanilla! Breakfast section is small but great quality. Lunch looked lovely with vegan and gluten free falafels and a very tasty looking chickpea pie also vegan and GF - also great selection of salads. Make sure you leave room for cake though all vegan and lots of choice!

“Vegetarian hideaway” What a lovely restaurant/café, I’m not a vegetarian, but I was treated to some of the freshest and delicious vegetarian food and very reasonably priced. I had a vegetable curry, was one of the best I’ve tasted. As crumbs kitchen is tucked away down Morgan’s arcade, it can be overlooked, but please make the effort to seek it out, you won’t be disappointed.

There’s nothing more humble than an onion; the ‘unsung hero’ of the kitchen according to Cardiff born Antonio Simone, which led to the naming of his newly opened restaurant The Humble Onion in Dinas Powys. Antonio has worked as a Chef for fourteen years, including at the award winning Bully’s Restaurant, Pontcanna whose owner Russell Bullimore has this to say: “One of our ex-chefs has opened the Humble Onion in Dinas Powys which we have tried and is the best for me.” That’s good enough recommendation for us!

THE HUMBLE ONION

We asked Antonio about his new restaurant which has opened to rave reviews “I’ve always had a passion for food. My parents owned a restaurant, so it’s in my blood shall we say. Over the years I’ve developed my own style and finally thought it was time to begin my own venture. I’ve worked within fine dining establishments, and I believe people want great food in a good social environment and that’s hopefully what we’ve achieved.” If the reviews are anything to go by Antonio you certainly have.

“ I believe people want great food in a good social environment.”

So what kind of food can we enjoy here? “My whole ethos is using humble ingredients and using classic French methods to make unpretentious dishes. Having said that we do offer what we call the not so humble, like fillet steak to help cater for everyone’s needs. Our food is heavily influenced by French and British cuisine, we use classical methods just showing the ingredients respect. We use local, seasonal, ingredients wherever possible; being green is a huge part of our vision. It’s also very important to us to use small local suppliers where possible; quality, seasonal ingredients form the base of all our dishes. 20

In a nutshell, we use local seasonal humble ingredients to create great tasting, honest dishes.” The most popular dishes here include the Egg and Leg; a crispy Burford brown egg and confit chicken leg, with a mustard emulsion, chicory and pickled shallots. Their French Onion Soup, with scorched Comte on top, is their staple dish. Apparently this soup takes around 6 hours to make, but depicts their ethos, there’s nothing more humble than an onion. We love the sound of those, and also the fillet of beef with sautéed spinach, Portobello mushroom, burnt onion, humble chips and au poivre sauce. The menus change each month so there’s always an opportunity for

“ We use local seasonal humble ingredients to create great tasting, honest dishes.”

new ‘favourites’, and their wine list is specially selected to complement their tasty dishes. We eagerly spot some more unusual spirits on their drinks list including the handcrafted Whitley Neill Gin, and vow to return.

Opening Hours will be extended from July as follows: Monday & Tuesday closed Wednesday 6pm – 10pm Thursday, Friday, Saturday 12pm – 2pm and 6pm – 10pm Sunday 12pm – 3pm The Humble Onion Station Road, Dinas Powys 029 2051 4900 www.thehumbleonion.co.uk Follow on Facebook and Twitter 21

Say Maserati slowly. What images fill your mind? Cigar shaped 250Fs dicing on the Monza banking? Or is it the Italian manufacturer’s road cars instead; grand-tourers like the Quattroporte or the sleeker GrandTurismo, the Merak perhaps or the Mistral? Maybe it’s the gorgeous Alfieri, named after their founder and built to commemorate this most evocative of motormaker’s centenary?

Whatever it is that’s occupying your thought it’s unlikely that’s it’s either four-doored or diesel powered. And anyway, aren’t diesel saloons altogether more Eric from accounts than they are Emilia Romagna? Things have changed. Maserati’s Ghibli is available as a diesel. Their first foray with oil-burners is aimed directly at the office car park stalwarts from Mercedes, Audi and BMW. They know their chances of celebrating their bi-centenary are slim if they continue solely as small volume manufacturer of exotics. Being Italian of course, the Ghibli wears an altogether sharper-styled, if ultimately perhaps not quite as well sewn together suit. The delicate triple vents in the front wings, the oval grille complete with centrally mounted trident badge, and those quad tailpipes all hint towards Maseratis of old.

But perhaps the clunk when you shut the door doesn’t feel quite as solid as it should. Once aboard you’re in no doubt this is a sports saloon. Deep-set dials share space with fine leather trim, (optional) carbon inserts, and a touchscreen that sits centre stage and takes care of everything from the heated seats and entertainment, to the sat-nav, the trip-computer and the Bluetooth. Four will find comfort easily, five at a push – the transmission tunnel hinders the centre rear seat’s legroom. The boot will happily swallow everyone’s luggage. Practical then, but ergonomically this interior would probably give an Ingolstadt engineer nightmares. And yet there is a certain something about it. It’s flamboyant, and feels all the better for it. 26

What isn’t quite so racy is the engine note. Thumb the starter and the 3 litre turbodiesel settles into a subdued, slightly industrial idle. If you were expecting a high revving, shrieking power-plant, think again. You get 271bhp and a very generous 442lbft of torque, but the redline starts at a conservative 4500rpm. Compensation is the promise of 47.9mpg. Things get better on the move. Use the paddles to select your own gears rather than letting the auto-box do its own thing, and not only can you avoid the 8 speeder’s somewhat dim-witted nature, but you can also make the Ghibli sound its (albeit diesely) growl. The steering feels beautifully direct, and mid-range acceleration is, shall we say… more than adequate. If you’re brave enough to dismiss the traction control there’s all kinds of fun to be had.

The ride is a little fidgety though; an indication that perhaps the Ghibli is better suited to the auto-strada than it is to a British B-road. So, flawed it may be, but the Ghibli offers a stylish and welcome deviation from the somewhat sober sports saloon norm.

What other sub-fifty grand rear wheeldrive V6 powered saloons can you think of that wear such legendary badges? Whether the Ghibli Diesel a left-field choice or a discerning one, I’ll let you decide. But, trust me, Eric from accounts has never had it so good.

“At Hoskins Morgan we feel that 2017 has seen no slowdown whatsoever concerning the Cardiff housing market with a constantly high level of demand for both sales and rental properties,” says Brad Hoskins of Hoskins Morgan.

HOSKINS MORGAN

As with most agents, demand is far outstretching stock, therefore prices remain high with rents increasing. Demand is consistent, particularly with young professional persons wanting to purchase or rent their own property, this is in addition to the ‘Buy To Let’ landlords looking to expand their portfolios - which helps explain the much needed increase in new build homes. For the past few months the Victoria Park branch of Hoskins Morgan has been joined by Lovell, the large property development company, to help market their new residential development at ‘The Mill’. People are coming in to meet Lovell in their droves to discuss and purchase parts of the development in readiness for the completion of the first wave of properties that’ll be ready in December of this year.

“No matter if you are selling or renting, please call.”

Despite June’s general election taking place in the aftermath of Brexit, and even though the majority of the country is not in such a good position, we feel it is fair to say that the housing market in Cardiff is not being effected in the same way as other locations within the UK. With lenders doing their best to keep rates down, as well as offering all sorts of incentives to keep peoples’ confidence, Cardiff has still seen prices rise. However purchasing property in our blossoming capital city is still a far cheaper option than in other places along the M4 corridor such as Bristol, Reading and Swindon. All in all things are positive at the moment concerning the market. If you would like any advice concerning your property, no matter if you are selling or renting, please call us and we would be more than happy to visit you at your property or discuss it over the phone. 28

Quality driven Guy Christian delivers professional hair styling, colouring and hair extensions in the comfort of their three cool, contemporary salons; two in Cardiff and one in Cwmbran. We popped along to wish them a happy 10th anniversary…

G UY CHRISTIAN PROFESSIONAL HAIR STYLING What sets Guy Christian apart from other salons? We’re a friendly, yet professional salon; we pride ourselves on attention to detail and cutting-edge hairstyling, offering the latest techniques and trends. We achieve this by investing in our staff through continued education.

It’s a great opportunity for our trainees to learn and practice their skills under the watchful eye of one of our seniors, and for models to get a great deal. Models required for each session can be found on our Facebook Training Page: https://www.facebook.com/ GCSalontraining

Each of our three salons has a Wella Colour Master Team member who specialises in colour corrections and free-hand techniques and our Senior Team regularly attend training courses at the Vidal Sassoon Academy in London.

We’re always on the lookout for help; do you have any haircare tips that you can share with us? Oh yes: n Shampoo is for your scalp, conditioner is for your hair. No matter how long/short your hair is you should only be using a small amount of shampoo.

We are also a Sassoon Professional Partner salon; recognised for our commitment to excellence in cut and colour. We run bi-monthly training days for our assistants and are always on the lookout for models for cuts, colours, conditioning treatments and blow drys for our sessions.

n

Dry shampoo is a great styling aid for fine hair to prolong the life of a blowdry.

n

The shorter your hair is, the more product you should use.

n

If you have curly hair diffuse it from very wet all the way to bone dry, upside down for maximum effect.

n

Clean the filter on the back of your hairdryer as a dirty filter slows the airflow over the element and increases the temperature of the air causing damage to the hair.

n n

Don’t shampoo your hair in the bath - when you rinse, the oils reattach to the hair.

“We pride ourselves on attention to detail.” 30

Only use your hot styling tools on bone dry hair - if it steams or crackles, your hair is not dry enough.

n

When making an appointment at the salon bring a few pictures, but make sure you take into consideration your own hair type vs the models.

n

If you have fine hair, skip the conditioner to get more control and volume

n

If you don’t use the same products at home as the stylist, you won’t get the same results. Thank you, that’s great advice. What product ranges do you use here at your salon? We use Sassoon, Wella, Nioxin, Sebastian and Olaplex, and they’re all available to purchase in any of our salons. And last but not least, do you have any plans for the future? As you know it’s our 10th birthday this year so we’ll be celebrating with exclusive offers and competitions for new and existing clients. The business has grown from strength to strength since the first salon opened on City Road in Cardiff in 2007, expanding

across South Wales with two further Guy Christian salons in Cardiff Bay and Cwmbran. We want to continue to grow while remaining one of the leading salons in Cardiff; staying ahead of the trends and working with the best products. We have exciting plans in the near future – we can’t reveal anything at the moment but we’ll keep you informed!

Jam Kitchens are taking their service to a brand new level in 2017. By tailoring the way they work with their customers, they are securing larger projects across the South Wales area.

JAM A DDS THE BESPOKE TOUCH

Combining Jose & Jason’s knowledge and experience, along with their ability to focus on their customer’s specific requirements, has enabled Jam to push their business forward, and as they approach their 10th anniversary their hard work is truly paying off. Having taken on a wide range of projects Jam are managing to home in on exactly what their customers require. “It’s truly paying off, we have completed kitchens with minor alterations on a small budget, through to larger refurbishments with associated works. Customer referrals are coming through thick and fast.”

Seeing one of their recent kitchens has shown City Life how truly focused Jam are at what they do best. By being truly dedicated to home refurbishments they are changing their customers’ lives in a remarkable way. Jam have taken a dated kitchen that wasn’t functional, and have transformed the space, designing and installing a stunning Painted Ash kitchen with masses of preparation space, and bespoke units, whilst providing a fantastic island, which now acts as the centre piece of the kitchen for family and friends to use to their hearts content. 34

“Our customer wanted a kitchen that would make a difference to their lifestyle, and the island was extremely important to them; they asked for it to be functional, whilst at the same time making a focal point of the new kitchen. Our discussions took us into talks on installing underfloor heating and porcelain floor tiles throughout the kitchen and rear extension, and forming a beautiful new opening, allowing the stunning views across their garden to be captured from the kitchen, which has made a world of difference to the customer.

We also framed the opening, and fitted a beautiful Bath stone lintel above, which, coupled with the handmade fire surround, ensured we completed the project with an elegant, traditional finish, in keeping with our customer’s beautiful home.” If you haven’t visited Jam before, why not give them a call and arrange a free consultation.

Providing loving canine care since 2014, Jess Takes The Lead is expanding – we popped in to chat with owner Jess Bishop about her plans.

JESS TAKES THE LEAD

We’ll provide an agility section, puppy play pen, sand pit stops, splash pools, race course, hide and seek, and chill out zones. We have a completely enclosed and secure 3.5 acres of field to play in, with each area sectioned off to create different ‘zones’. Please check out our Facebook page for more news of our opening date or call us on 029 2132 1059.

What led you to setting up Jess Takes The lead? I started in March 2014 with just dog walking and pet care and then opened my dog grooming salon in Canton in September 2015. I completed a start-up business course with the Princes Trust who guided me through the process of setting up my own business and I managed to secure funding through the Princes Trust and Business in Focus. I then went on to become a young ambassador for the Princes Trust, giving talks to encourage young people to fulfil their dreams and giving talks to people who fundraise for the Princes Trust.

It sounds fantastic. What do you love most about your job? Thank you. I love the look on the dogs’ faces when they know we are going out on an adventure with their buddies. I love the bonds we build with the client and dogs, and seeing them grow. I love seeing the transformation of a dog from when it comes in for grooming to when it leaves, and the understanding we create between us and the dogs. I love seeing clients’ feedback and hearing how happy their dogs are. I love the kindness, the encouragement and positivity of the community always wishing us to do well.

What services do you provide? Dog walking, dog grooming, comfort breaks, animal feeding and day care. The Groom Room is our dog grooming salon in Canton and The Sanctuary is the name of our day care service - we’re in the final stages of setting this up and hope to be open shortly. 36

How do you make grooming a fun, positive experience? We treat the dogs; playing with interactive games and generally giving the dog attention. This usually turns a ‘difficult’ dog into a happy, playful dog. If the dog is unhappy with a certain part of the grooming procedure, we try to distract them and use encouraging voice tones and discuss details with the owner upon their return to see what their favourite toys/treats are or any advice on their behaviour or commands that they are used to so we can reinforce this to make it as positive an experience as possible for them.

How often should a dog be professionally groomed? Every six to eight weeks, depending on the breed. And last but not least, how do you deal with difficult dogs? When faced with a difficult dog to walk, we work with the dog and the client to ensure we are following the same regime and give some tips on handling the dog whilst on a walk. We test their re-call, engagement with other dogs and people, and responses to basic commands.

Parents; park up your Bugaboo, put down your chai latte and focus; there’s a new Kid (store) in town and we’ve got first dibs on the goss…

BARNEY & BEAU Mia Kowsor, mummy of four and owner of exciting new start up, Barney & Beau gives us the inside scoop on her new venture and why she chose Pontcanna.

Mia, can you tell us a little about the store, and what inspired the name? Barney & Beau is a contemporary lifestyle store dedicated to sourcing and providing innovative, stylish and modern products for kids and the home. We will be showcasing contemporary apparel, decor, furniture and toys ideal for the modern family. The name of the store is inspired by my two little Princes Barnaby and Beaumont. The two of them, along with my two ‘big kids’ are the absolute reason for my ‘get up and go’ and as the older two had already featured in my previous business it made sense to give the toddlers the limelight this time round. Why Pontcanna? I absolutely love Pontcanna, it’s such an exciting hub of young, cool professionals and of course the very fabulous yummy mummies, and with the amazing deli’s, restaurants and boutiques already here it seemed the perfect choice. What products will you be selling and why did you choose this kind of store? As a mother to four children I have done more than my fair share of research and shopping for the latest and greatest in the baby world. My first two children came along in the early 2000’s and out of frustration at the lack of exciting products for kids in Cardiff back then, I set up my first store. Now I’m back to the beginning and nothing has changed. The only way I can acquire the coolest products for my younger two is to drive to London or shop online which can be both tricky and unappealing. I wanted something different when designing the boys’ nursery, not just ‘run of the mill’ department store collections and my love for monochrome and Scandinavian chic was completely unfulfilled on the high street.

“ We’re offering beautiful things for babies and young children that aren’t mass produced; a choice of more unique, contemporary designs.” So as a result this is exactly what we’ll be offering at Barney & Beau…….. EXCITING, EXCLUSIVE, CURRENT COLLECTIONS FOR THE COOLEST OF KIDS! What sets you apart from other kids stores? The only other stores in Cardiff are larger department stores and they’re just not capable of offering the personal touch and high standards of customer service that lets a smaller store go the extra mile for their customer. At Barney & Beau we’ll be led by customer service; our customers will feel welcome, important and always catered for to the highest standard. As for our products, we’re offering beautiful things for babies and young children that aren’t mass produced; a choice of more unique, contemporary designs. 38

This exciting new store will launch early August with the webshop going live shortly after. Barney & Beau would love to see you at the exclusive launch of their new store so be sure to log on to the website www. barneyandbeau.com and sign up today where you can also follow Mia’s blog on her journey to the launch. You can also check what those #peskyprinces are up to on all their social media channels: Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, Youtube, Twitter and Snapchat. For 2017, residents of Penarth can look forward to a spectacular fashion week planned for October of this year. Over six days (9th – 14th October 2017) many venues local to Penarth will be hosting fashion and beauty related events, all to raise funds for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution’s Penarth station.

P E NA R T H

FASH IO N WE E K

RNLI PENARTH

HAS DESIGNS ON FASHION WEEK Every angle will be covered, with opportunities to join events in Penarth’s fashion retailers, beauty product shops, hairdressers, jewellery and accessories, shoe retailers, many offering special event evenings, social soirées, receptions and of course opportunities to dress up and get the bling on! Plans are already in hand for a unique fashion show at Penarth lifeboat station to mark the end of the fashion week. With professional staging, a fashion runway, lighting and choreography the station will be transformed, we will be hiding all (well, almost all!) of out yellow wellies and crew members will mix with models to present a fashion show the likes of which Penarth has not seen before. Normally a scene of frantic activity during a launch, the crew room will become a different type of changing room and the boat house itself will instead of accommodating our lifeboats be transformed to our very own fashion venue. Whilst the focus will be on high fashion and modern haute couture, we’ll make sure that the famous yellow wellies will make an appearance – who knows, we may start a trend. ☺ Afterwards there will be an after show party at Penarth Yacht Club. With raffles and auction prizes already being donated, (but we would always welcome more!) there is ample opportunity to participate in the fundraising event. The events are being coordinated through RNLI Fundraising lead Caroline Eva.

“This is a really great and unique opportunity to help support the crew of the lifeboat station. We are so grateful for the sponsors and participants helping to support our fashion week. Our crews rely on the very best equipment, as they place themselves at risk in order to save lives at sea. By supporting fashion week much needed funds can be targeted to ensure the crews at Penarth have the most up to date, effect, and safe personal protective equipment. The RNLI fashion week will add something different to our fundraising calendar, and something that we hope to build on each year in the future”. We would like to encourage local business to help support t he events – please email carolineeva@ hotmail.co.uk for more information and details of how to help. There will be fashion shows from the town’s popular boutiques The Queen B and Gingers. 40

We will not be leaving the men out the town’s very own Nathan Palmer is working on an event as well. Visitors to Penarth’s Victorian seafront will be familiar with the sight of the modern lifeboat station at the southerly end of the Esplanade. Not everyone however will know the full history of the lifeboat station. A lifeboat was established at Penarth in 1861 on the northern shore of the Bristol Channel where vessels frequently stranded on the shoals. The original ‘station’ sat just below the location of the Fig Tree restaurant, in amongst Penarth’s deckchair stall.

PE N A RTH

FA S H I O N W EEK

RNLI PENARTH With the establishment of the lifeboat stations at Barry Dock and Weston-Super-Mare, it was decided to close the Penarth station in 1905. However, in 1980 it was decided to re-open the station and a D Class inflatable lifeboat became operational on 17 June 1980 some 75 years after the original station closed. With a purpose-built station on the esplanade, Penarth RNLI now accommodates two lifeboats. The smaller ‘D’Class lifeboat, which carries up to three crew members is seen as the workhorse of the station. It’s speed and manoeuvrability make it ideal for working along the rugged coast, and the local islands of Flatholm, Steepholm, and the smaller Sully Island, which although accessible at low tide is quick off twice a day by the tide.

First introduced into the RNLI fleet in 1963, the design of the inflatable D class lifeboat continues to evolve to meet changes in demand and technology. Highly manoeuvrable and usually operates closer to shore than the all-weather lifeboats. Those who have been on the ‘D’ class will describe the ride as being like a roller coaster, and it can be quite unforgiving when it hits the surface of the sea during rough weather. The second boat at Penarth is the Atlantic 85 lifeboat, which carries up to four crew members. With a top speed of 35 knots, and a rigid hull, this lifeboat is able to withstand the very harshest of sea conditions and weather. The Atlantic 85 is part of the B-series of lifeboats, originally designed and developed at Atlantic College. 42

Penarth lifeboat station is one of the busiest in Wales, and the volunteer crews attend between 60 and 70 shouts on average each year. Calls can be to broken down vessels, first aid emergencies at sea, missing person searches and to assist people cut off by the tide – the Bristol Channel having the second largest tidal range in the world. Although not everyone in the crew has a sailing background, all are volunteers and as a crew we have a range of ‘day jobs’ - some from the emergency services, local companies, company directors and several from the marine industries. Our crew members freely give of their time and attend weekly training evenings, formal exercises and of course respond to emergencies as required, at any time of the day or night.

We are tasked by the Coastguard control centre at Milford Haven and are alerted by pagers. Depending on the nature of the calls, either or both boats may be launched, both using specially developed tractors, by members of our shore crew. There is a great community spirit within the crew – we socialise together, support charity events and as a result develop excellent team skills. We all share a desire to give something back to our community, by saving lives at sea, whilst fostering a community spirit. And that is why this year we are wholeheartedly supporting the fashion week fundraising event. More on that in the next couple of pages.

Whether your big day is in one year, six months or just a few weeks, you need to make sure that your skin is ready. That means finding a practitioner that offers the latest procedures that you can trust. Dawn Richardson of Dawn Aesthetic Clinic, Penarth offers a full range of non-invasive procedures that will ensure you achieve a flawless complexion.

THE DAWN CLINIC

What procedures do you offer your soon to be brides Dawn? We have a full range of procedures available to help them achieve effective but natural results. These procedures include the popular 8-point face lift, anti-wrinkle treatments, Aqualux – fat dissolving injections, chemical peels, dermal fillers, Dermaroller, EDS electronic dermastamp, hyperhidrosis treatments, liquid face lift treatment, PDO threat lift and Radiesse hands. What about Skin Care? To get the brides skin in tip top condition, we offer iS Clinical treatments (the ultimate Bridal Beauty 3-step Skin Guide to help you achieve a flawless complexion). For the neck and chest, we offer the ELASTIderm Décolletage System, for pigmentation, the popular NU-Derm System and, for rosacea, the Rosaclear system.

What about the damaging effects of the sun? Yes, it all begins with sun protection and we work with a fantastic range of products to help combat the damaging effects of sun damage. Obagi Professional-C Serums and Obagi-C Rx products work like magic to prevent and treat sun damaged skin.

Are you working with anyone new? Yes, I’m really excited to be working with Profhilo, which is a Bioremodeling and tightening effect system which both nourishes the dermal cells and restores firmness of the skin, with a prolonged duration. Also, I’m also achieving great results with Aqualyx, which dissolves localised fat deposits simply and safely. And let’s not forget Sculptra, a natural and long-lasting injectable, which enables you to turn back time naturally and gradually. 46

Men are realising that, if they want to look good, they need to be good to their bodies. Spending endless hours in the gym might help, but looking good doesn’t stop there. As with women, skin care is vital if men are to stave off the wrinkles, sagging and blemishes that come with age. Dawn Aesthetic Clinic welcomes both women men to her clinic. What treatments are popular with men Dawn? It’s no secret that work, family life, late nights, staying in shape and stress can affect the skin. Ageing also takes its toll. My male clients generally come in for muscle relaxing treatments, Radiesse and Sculptra (injectable fillers), Profhilo (bioremodelling skin laxity), Aqualyx (a solution for problem areas of localised fat), and iS Clinical, our new innovative skincare treatments.

“ To get the brides skin in tip top condition, we offer iS Clinical treatments.”

Tell us more about Aqualux Sometimes even with regular exercise and healthy nourishment, men and women get that one pad of fat that troubles them and will not disappear. This is down to genetics. Here’s the science part: Aqualux contains desoxycholan-acid, a secondary bile acid and endogenous substances. The treatment is performed with external ultrasound. The liquid substances support and enhances the fat-dissolving effect by the process of cavitational adipocytolysis. What areas does the treatment work on? It can be used over the entire body but more specifically hips, saddle bags, thighs, stomach and knees. We’re seeing great results!

How does iS Clinical work on male skin? A man’s skin has its own unique attributes and needs. Men tend to have dry skin due to shaving, produce more sebum, making them prone to acne, and often have existing skin damage caused by neglect and exposure to the elements. We recommend regimes that address the most common dermatological conditions including the cleansing complex, the active serum, hydra-cool serum and Eclipse SPF 50+.

“ As with women, skin care is vital if men are to stave off the wrinkles, sagging and blemishes that come with age.” 47

Arthritis is one of the biggest causes of disability in the UK, affecting people of all ages. Thirteen million people in the UK are currently affected by arthritis and joint pain. Barbara Allan had suffered with reactive arthritis for years - she is now completely pain free. Read on to find out more…

CONQUERING A RTHRITIS

At the time, she was a PhD student at Washington University in St. Louis. She made excellent use of the world class medical library and her access to top medical research minds. She completely reversed her arthritis using the 9 Secrets in her bestselling book, Conquering Arthritis. Her book details how you can also carry out these treatments.

Importance of an Accurate Diagnosis - Aiming at the Right Target! To Barbara’s surprise, the treatments in her Conquering Arthritis book have been helpful not just for reactive arthritis, which is what she had, but also for a wide range of arthritis types. She says, “One of the ironies of my life if that I wrote a book that is so effective for reversing rheumatoid arthritis., which I did not have.” Her next shocker was how many people have written her about how helpful the book has been for their osteoarthritis. She then realized that the primarily problem for most of the over 200 forms of arthritis is chronic inflammation. Her methods help, because they reverse the underlying causes of chronic inflammation.

Barbara has continued to be arthritisfree since 1999. She is still delighted with trading in her old set of wheels, the electric cart, for her new, much more fun set of wheels, her bicycle.

That being said, it is still important to get an accurate diagnosis, especially to identify problems beyond the scope of simple arthritis. If you have Lyme disease, for instance, it must be additionally treated, in order to recover.

New Set of Wheels At age 25, Barbara Allan, became so crippled by arthritis that she was forced to use an electric cart. Trying to walk caused her fainting intensities of pain. Her medical doctors told her nothing more could be done. Luckily, she did not believe them. Instead she researched her own cure.

48

Diet and Exercise - Your Best Defense Arthritis drugs suppress symptoms, but alone do not reverse underlying causes. You also need nature cure methods, like an individually tailored anti-inflammatory diet and exercise designed to help you recover. Why Generic Anti-Inflammatory Diets Often Fail The foods and chemicals that trigger inflammation, vary widely from one person to the next. To get well, you must avoid your own trigger substances, not some generic list that eliminates many perfectly healthy foods for you and simultaneously allows other “safe” foods that are not actually safe for you.

Barbara’s book details several different ways to identify your particular triggers. For the quickest and easiest way, visit: www.ConqueringArthritis.com/alcat

Cardiff born and bred, Graeme Hooper and David Mitchell have known each other in business and as friends for over 28 years. Passionate about food and drink, and Spain in particular, they’ve set up their fantastic online business Productos Del Marco and, being lovers of food and drink (and Spain) ourselves, we leapt at the chance for a chat with them.

PRODUCTOS DEL M ARCO

How have you grown your business from an idea to where it is now? I (Graeme) visited Jerez de la Frontera in Spain around ten years ago after seeing a Lipizzaner horse display in Cardiff and tracked them back to the pure-bred Andalucian horse. Jerez is the home of the Real Escuela de Arte Equestrian (Royal School for Equestrian Art) and so I decided to visit. I fell in love with the city and its traditional laid back lifestyle so I’ve been returning three to four times a year. During my visits I met many local people and started to discover the incredible food and drink culture and, in particular, the sherry from the region. This sparked my interest, leading to considerable research in Spain generally and the region in particular - so much so that I also embarked on learning the language. I wanted to start an e-commerce business and felt that something you’re passionate about is obviously a great place to start.

I met with two friends in Jerez and discussed the idea with them, they previously owned a high end restaurant in the town and they confirmed they’d love to help so we set off on the journey of sourcing web design, social media etc. Dave confirmed he was interested in being involved; we both flew out and the four of us have been on the journey since. It sounds great, you’re living the dream. Tell us about the products you sell? All our produce comes from the sherry triangle region called El Marco de Jerez, hence the name Productos del Marco. We sell sherry, brandy, sherry vinegar, wines, oils, charcuterie, cured cheeses, cured fish products from Barbate, chocolates from Cadiz, and hand crafted Andalucian pottery. Who do you sell to? Our business is purely on-line sales; we sell to the public and also to delis, restaurants etc. We deliver anywhere in the UK. 52

Do you have any plans for the future? To further develop our products range and expand our outlet base. We’re currently looking to add rare breed Retinto beef, Iberian pork, and organic honey to our ranges in the near future - once again all from the El Marco de Jerez region. Boasting more than 3,200 hours of sunshine per year the Marco de Jerez region is an area with a deep-rooted wine producing tradition and a great deal to offer those of us who love gastronomic delights. Take a look at the Productos del Marco website for the very best from this stunning region.

Harry Robinson enjoyed a career in professional rugby playing for Cardiff Blues, Llanelli Scarlets and Wales, however having sustained a career ending neck injury he was forced to retire at the age of 23. This unforeseen circumstance illustrated to him the importance of individuals recognising and making informed investment planning decisions to ensure their future long term financial interests are planned for and protected. The strength of this belief provided him with the determination to set up his own financial planning company in April 2017.

H ARRY ROBINSON WEALTH MANAGEMENT Providers of holistic financial planning, Harry Robinson, Associate Partner of St. James’s Place Wealth Management Wealth Management offers advice and solutions to individuals and business in four main subjects - Protection, Pensions, Investments and Mortgages.

Advice mainly focuses around these four areas with additional access to specialists in Inheritance Tax Planning (IHT), Trusts and Capital Gains Tax Planning (CGT). Harry explains that his emphasis is on building and maintaining long term relationships with his clients and to continue to provide them with advice as their financial needs evolve over time. “Deciding on whom you are confident to entrust your finances long term is a huge decision, and one I understand.

Before a mutual agreement is reached with my clients I share with them my core beliefs and values to ensure clear advice is given in their very best interests; ultimately I want them to achieve long term future financial stability.”

Harry’s core principles of hard work, integrity and commitment are the foundations of his business whether the client’s priority is to: n Build or preserve capital n Gain financial protection against risk n Pension planning for retirement n Distribute wealth tax efficiently for future generations. “We offer the benefit of genuinely client focused business, delivering solutions that are right for each individual. We do not offer – off the shelf solutions.” 56

“I believe everyone deserves help to navigate the potential minefield of personal finances.” Is there a minimum account size for your clients? Not at all; whatever your financial situations or goals, a strong financial plan is paramount. I believe everyone deserves help to navigate the potential minefield of personal finances and have help to avoid any pitfalls that they may not have thought about or even know about. With the uncertainty about the future pension provisions from the state I believe it is paramount to make sure that you take your future into your own hands! I can support people through this process.

What aspects of your business distinguish you from your competition, and can you tell us your client service philosophy? I put clients firmly at the heart of everything I do and believe in providing a genuinely client-focused business. In my experience, no two clients are the same and I therefore ensure that I understand your personal or business objectives and deliver solutions that are right for you. I do not provide off the shelf solutions, but offer the benefit of a single relationship for all of your financial planning needs. I strive to offer the very best service to develop a long term relationship with you.

“I put clients firmly at the heart of everything I do.”

I deliver my commitment by: n Providing personal face-to-face financial advice n Giving you the opportunity to review your financial affairs regularly n Effectively managing your investments via our distinctive approach n Keeping you informed of the latest news and any changes that might affect your personal situation n Listening to your feedback n Ensuring that our dealings with you are sensitive to your needs “If you are interested in a no obligation full financial review to ensure you have all your bases covered in your financial plan, I will be more than happy to arrange a meeting to give you piece of mind. BESPOKE

K ITCHENS & FURNITURE When Tony and Gemma Morgan from Cowbridge were looking to include a kitchen into their fully remodelled home, they chose Bespoke Kitchens and Furniture to carry out the work. Here Gemma tells us why.

What made you choose Bespoke Kitchens to carry out the work? We approached a number of cabinet makers in the area. Owner Simon Edwards invited us to his workshop to see a beautiful boot room in progress. As soon as we saw it we were sold! Did you shop around for quotations? Yes, I had four different quotations. Bespoke wasn’t the cheapest, but we felt that Simon had the best understanding of what we were looking for. From the beginning Simon answered our (many) emails then, once the drawings were ready, he met with us to go over every detail before work began.

Did you have a firm idea of what you wanted or did you leave it to Simon to design? We knew the style of kitchen that we wanted, and had some basic idea of the layout. Simon gave us some great ideas. We originally wanted a dresser style unit opposite the island, but he suggested creating full height units and fitting them around our fridge freezer - it’s one of my favourite aspects of the kitchen now. It’s great for entertaining as it’s open plan to the dining area. We knew that we wanted marble or quartz for the worktops and Simon obtained quotes for us from several companies in the area. We have larder units behind it which we use for breakfast goods and snacks, it all works really well. 60

What form did the process take? We initially met at the workshop, then had several emails, calls and face to face meetings at the house before Simon presented us with the drawings to approve. He was very approachable and was able to offer us advice and suggest other trades to help with other aspects of the renovation. Were any building works required? We fully renovated the house - at one point we were left with a slab and two walls! We employed a building company for the building works and managed the other trades ourselves. The full renovation took almost two years - double the time that we had anticipated!

The kitchen design was drawn up in a few weeks and Simon fitted it himself with several of his team in around two weeks. How do you know use the room as opposed to how it was before? The space wasn’t actually there before - it’s all part of a new extension that’s been added to the house but it’s a fantastic entertaining space, it’s taking me a while to get used to having so much cupboard space. We are both delighted, it’s our favourite room in the house. It’s a hit with our daughters Madeleine and Arabella as well.

Would you recommend Bespoke Kitchens to friends, colleagues, family? Absolutely, Simon has given us the kitchen of our dreams. It is the only part of our renovation that was completed on time and on budget. Simons attention to detail and customer care really set him apart from the rest.

Here to help - Tree Squadron are committed to delivering a prompt, high quality and reliable service, offering everything from essential tree maintenance through to tree felling and removal, hedge trimming, and general garden maintenance. The independent business is owned and managed by Phil Boniface. We chat all things arboriculture with him…

TREE SQUADRON

Phil, what led you to setting up Tree Squadron? I served 13 years in the Army, as an engineer attached to some of the most elite British units. When I left the Army I worked at one of Kent’s top Arboriculture Association tree surgery companies where I became fully qualified and gained a wealth of experience. This company went far above and beyond any tree company I’d heard about, so at that point I decided I wanted to use that great experience and create my own company in Cardiff using that level of knowledge, customer service and work quality. I started Tree Squadron earlier this year, I like that it has a military twist while offering great work, plenty of knowledge and guidance, and that all-important customer service.

“We carry out all aspects of tree surgery.”

Has your military work ethic helped your business? Undoubtedly; I was a Sergeant when I left the Armed forces, and I’m proud to say I have high morals, integrity, I’m honest, hard-working, on time, and professional; all priceless traits in my business. What services do you provide? We carry out all aspects of tree surgery, hedge trimming, garden maintenance and fencing; all quality work at competitive prices. Bearing in mind anyone can describe themselves as a tree surgeon or arborist - can you give our readers some advice on how to choose a tree surgeon? Definitely; on request you should be shown City and Guilds and Lantra based qualifications for the individual, and the company should have public liability insurance and employers’ liability insurance. 64

The tree surgeon should be able to provide examples of their work as well as quote the standard of tree work that he/she works to, which is BS3998 - The British Standard of Tree Work. What geographical areas do you cover? We cover Cardiff and the surrounding neighbourhoods; LLanishen, LLandaff, Danescourt, Radyr, Pentyrch, Pentwyn, Barry, Penarth, Cowbridge, etc. If your area isn’t listed just give us a call and we can see what we can do for you. We provide FREE no obligation quotes and any professional advice you may need.

Summer Tips 1. Tree pruning. This is as much art as it is science. While the majority of tree trimming should occur during the dormant season, there are a few times when summer tree pruning is necessary. First, anytime there are diseased, dead, or damaged branches present, they should be pruned out for both the health of the tree and safety reasons. Second, trees that flower in the spring are best pruned in the early summer, as soon as they finish blooming. This list includes magnolias, flowering cherries, and lilacs. 2. Hedge trimming. Maintenance pruning should take place in the summer for deciduous and evergreen hedges. However when undertaking work on garden hedges check there are no birds nesting, as it is an offence under the Wildlife & Countryside Act 1981 to damage or destroy the nest of any wild bird while it is in use or being built. 3. Feeding trees, hedges and plants. Correct fertilization will ensure they have ample nutrition to support leaf and shoot growth, and fend off pests and diseases. Trees growing in high-stress areas, such as urban or suburban environments, often have greater fertilization needs than trees growing in natural areas. If you didn’t get to mulching this spring, it’s not too late. Mulching is an important step because it cuts down on weed competition, stabilizes soil temperatures, and helps conserve soil moisture. 4. Irrigation. During the hot, dry weather of summer, watering trees and plants may be necessary, especially if they are young or newly planted. Trees need an average of one inch of water per week. When watering trees, deeper, less-frequent applications of water promote better root growth than shallow, morefrequent irrigation. 5. Lawns. Now the grass is growing fast, mow regular to a short cut, pull out any weeds complete with roots and water in the evenings to prevent scorching.

Who doesn’t love a scented candle? But did you know that many candles contain nasties and, when burnt, can cause toxic fumes, which can lead to illness? Gauci Organic Candles are made from good, old-fashioned, earth grown soybeans and contain no nasties. Let candle maker extraordinaire, Spiro Gauci tell you more about candles and what got him interested in the candle making business.

GAUCI ORGANIC CANDLES What is so special about your candles then Spiro? The wax we use is made from soybeans. It is further enhanced with the finest carefully selected botanical oils, adding to its performance characteristics. All our candles use soy waxes and are guaranteed to contain no petroleum, paraffin or beeswax products and all the soy waxes we use in our candle making are 100% vegetable. Where did your passion for candle making come from? I have always had a passion for fire, flames, candles and scents. I don’t know why, but when I was little I used to visit my nan and gramps (that’s Welsh for grandmother and grandfather by the way) at their bungalow in Newport. As they were quite elderly, they would always complain it was cold so they always had a coal fire burning. I used to sit staring into the flames for what seemed like hours just day-dreaming. Looking back, that’s probably where my fascination came from so, as soon as I was old enough, I left home and got my own place. The first thing I bought for my flat was some scented candles from The Pier in Cardiff and my new flat smelled wonderful. Pretty soon I was experimenting with candle-making. Things were a little tight financially when I first started. I used to recycle the scented paraffin candle wax and pour into Pringle crisp containers with string hanging from the kitchen unit. I’m sure it was partly to save money but also an excuse to buy more Pringles! At this point, I didn’t know anything about the chemical make-up of wax – my eco-friendly thinking was to come later as I looked into it in more detail. I was also inspired after a road trip across America. In San Francisco I discovered a candle shop that blew me away! It was full of candles and smelled fantastic – so many different colours and the scent was overwhelming. I couldn’t stop thinking about it and I’ve dreamed of having my own candle making company ever since.

Where did the essential oils addition come from? My experience in America opened my mind to the possibilities of using scents and essential oils in my candles. I’d always been interested in meditation (and Karate – it’s a spiritual thing I suppose) and so this seemed a logical step. I tried meditation myself with different scents and soon got a feel for what worked well. And so began my candle-lit journey. Why is organic so important to you? I wanted to share my passion for candles but, as I had become more environmentally aware, I also wanted to make sure that what I was creating wasn’t harming the planet. So, I researched organic soy wax and essential oils to ensure they were friendly before I went any further. Now I have a small workshop where we make our candles and I couldn’t be happier. My vision is turning into a reality and, although we’re only a small business, we’re growing every day as new customers find us and tell their friends. 67

At Gauci, we really don’t want to be the biggest candle business in the world, just the best. And, if we spread a little love and light along the way, that would be nice too. Who buys your candles? I have a small but growing list of private customers. I also stock my candles in a number of independent gift shops and salons. I’ve recently been in meetings with a couple of garden centres as well and I’m hoping so see my displays there soon. My little empire is growing! Gauci grooming products coming soon, beard oils, beard balms and the new website www.gauciorganics.co.uk

One of only a handful of remaining independent jewellers in Cardiff, Christopher George Jewellers was started in 1979 by father and son team George and Christopher Dagley. Nearly 40 years on they are still a family run store in the heart of Cardiff city centre, with the values of traditional independent jewellers, and the added bonus of a global online presence.

CHRISTOPHER GEORGE Over the years Chris and George have been joined by their dedicated team of professional and friendly staff, and pride themselves on their outstanding customer service. We asked Manager Alun Williams about the team “We currently employ a great team of sales assistants of varying ages and experiences. We believe that customer relations are of upmost importance; whether you’re spending £10 on a watch battery or £20,000 on a diamond ring you’ll receive our utmost attention and care. We employ experts in each area of the business, so we can offer a complete in-store jewellery and watch repair service. We are not just shop keepers like so many other high street jewellers; we are passionate about what we do.” Christopher George offers many diamond ring collections that are designed and unique, to themselves.

However, if you’re looking for a truly unique piece of jewellery Christopher George has the answer in their own diamond ring collection where you can select your particular diamond(s) and then choose your own setting (making it truly unique to you) Their onsite diamond setters will then set it for you, often within the hour.

“We employ experts.” We love that idea and asked Alun what else sets Christopher George apart from other jewellers “We have onsite goldsmiths and watchmakers which means we can do a lot more for our customers without having to send their items away. We have one of the largest selections of pre-owned jewellery and rings in South Wales, and we carry some of the most popular jewellery brands including Nomination, Couer de Lion & Clogau to name a few.” 68

Also, if you’re looking for a valuation for insurance purposes, probate, or for sale, their on-site valuation experts, as well as a visiting FIRV (Fellow of the Institute) registered valuer, are able to offer a full range of valuation services on all items of jewellery and watches. It’s in their make-up for Christopher George to offer top quality products; where possible they source British made products but also import jewellery and stones from all over the world. They trade ethically and adhere strictly to the Kimberly process, only buying diamonds from suppliers who can give written guarantees of this. Whether you’re after a pre-owned watch or piece of jewellery, a statement piece no one else will have, a battery for your watch, or a valuation, Christopher George is the place to go; tell them we sent you.

Llanmoor Homes show homes have become well known in South Wales for their exciting, on trend interior design. Tracey Grey is the mastermind behind the Llanmoor show homes, carefully selecting everything from furniture to colour schemes. Tracey talks to us about what it’s like to work as a show home designer...

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF

Did you always want to work in interior design? Not really. Whilst I felt I had a flair for art and design when I was at school, I didn’t really know what opportunities there were to channel this into a career. Interior design wasn’t such a big thing back then.

How did you get into designing show homes? My husband Tim is Sales Director at Llanmoor Homes. When we were first married we used to visit show homes of other new home developers in the area to gather information for market research. The more I looked at the competitors show homes, the more I thought ‘I could do this!’ Luckily for me Tim suggested that I give it a go, and I must have impressed him because 21 years later I’m still furnishing Llanmoor Homes show homes across South Wales!

How do you begin thinking about a show home? Where do you get your inspiration? When I’m working on a show home I eat, sleep and live it. The house is generally in the very early stages of construction when I start thinking about my designs so more often than not I have to work purely off a floor plan and build up a 3D view in my head of what I think the rooms will look like when they are completed. My initial ideas for the interior design tend to come from a wide variety of sources. Sometimes I already have a particular trend or colour scheme in mind that I want to follow through the home. It can be fun to work with a theme - Moroccan, out of Africa, nautical, vintage and oriental Zen are just a few of the themes I have used in the past.

“I quite like the neutral, glamorous trend at the moment.” 72

I spend days looking on the internet for suitable pieces and the rest of the time trawling around shops and furniture retailers trying to find what I need. Not a lot gets done in my own home when I’m working on a show home! What are the biggest challenges and the biggest rewards in your work? The biggest challenge is having ideas but not being able to find the items that I need in the short timescales that I have to work to. Sometimes I have to change my plans because I can’t source certain items and I then end up going in a totally different direction with the design. I have to be openminded sometimes, even if it means rethinking my whole design. The biggest rewards are the satisfaction of finishing something I’ve started, even if there have been challenges along the way, and getting to hear all the positive feedback about my work from visitors to the show home.

AN INTERIOR DESIGNER Which show home has been your favourite? My ideas and the fashions I like move on, so the most recent show home is more often than not my favourite. Perhaps the most fun to do was a nautical themed home I decorated a few years ago where I painted the whole of a children’s bedroom in a seaside theme with children running on the beach, a light house and seagulls.

Which current trends do you most like? I quite like the neutral, glamorous trend at the moment and I’m fancying plum and burgundy accents thrown in to add a bit of warmth. I also like a bit of bling, which won’t be a surprise to anyone who has visited the Llanmoor show homes! Do you have any favourite places to shop for items for your show homes? I shop everywhere! My favourite local companies are Astral Lighting for their

fantastic service, Benjamin Interiors for the elegant room sets created by Ruth Benjamin and just recently No.39 in Cowbridge. This really is a gem, an Aladdin’s cave of goodies for your home. Having been somewhat busy moving home ourselves over the summer, I gave the ladies at No.39 the opportunity to design and furnish our brand new four bedroom show home at Bryn Meurig, Llanharry. They have done a great job and the feedback from visitors has been exceptionally positive.

Do you have any advice for anyone who wants to work in interior design? My advice to anyone who really wants to work in interior design is to make sure it’s your passion. Designing and furnishing a show home interior is a huge commitment and really takes over your life so complete dedication to the job essential. 73

Taking a degree in Interior Design will teach you the techniques for the job, but in my opinion it’s just as important to have natural passion and flair.

Established in 1903, multi-disciplinary law firm Robertsons achieved Law Society Lexcel accreditation in December 2007 - they were one of the first legal practices in Cardiff to do this. We chat with Solicitor Chris Barber…

ROBERTSONS SOLICITORS

Chris, what’s the ethos behind Robertsons? Service: quite simply, we are all about our clients. We may be steeped in tradition, but we have a strong service ethos. It may sound cliché, but every client no matter how ‘big or small’ is important to us and client service is at our very core. Testimony to this is that our clients come back to us again and again. We have a very loyal client base and high client retention rates. Expertise: we have a number of specialists including conveyancing, family law, litigation, and dispute resolution. It is important to us that we recruit or nurture the very best legal minds and so in addition to our experienced senior legal staff we have a growing team that will ensure the continuity of expertise and service in years to come. Community: whilst we work across the UK, our heart and history lies in Cardiff. Our staff support the local community in many ways, whether we’re skydiving

for a local Autism Charity, volunteering for the Cardiff Samaritans or acting as a trustee for a local charity, the team can usually be found volunteering in one area of our community or other at any given time. What sets Robertsons apart from other firms of solicitors? All of the above really. We’ve been around the block somewhat so we have the knowledge and experience to be able to support our clients through any situation. We have a history that stretches back for over 100 years; our longevity means that our clients can talk to us in confidence, knowing that we’ll be there for them, whatever the future brings. And we go the extra mile. We really do. Some clients require service level agreements, and that’s not a problem for us. We go beyond the basics. The need for legal representation often brings with it an emotional challenge. We understand this and always put our client first every time. 74

You’ve heard the old adage of two ears and one mouth and both should be used in equal proportion. That’s us – unless in a courtroom of course! What led to your rebranding and can you talk us through it? It’s true that a change is as good as a rest isn’t it? The issue for us is that our brand is well known, and has a strong association with high quality service in conveyancing and family law particularly. So whilst we didn’t want to change the Robertsons brand, we did feel that it needed to evolve to some extent. A challenge! So we commissioned the help of a local branding specialist, and based on our brief he came back to us with a number of interesting options. The addition of the green shows growth, harmony, safety and freshness, whilst maintaining the blue represents depth and stability. We think our new branding sums us, and our services, up rather well.

What advice what you give our readers on choosing the right law firm? 1. Do your research: n Find out how long the practice has been in existence and what their track record is like in the area you need help with. Ask them if they have taken on similar cases and what the outcome was. n Seek out testimonials – rated and verified online ones are best of course. There will always be good and bad testimonials but look for trends – what are people generally saying? n Costs will play a part – so understand what the financial implications are to you. n Are they ‘your kind of people’? Your law firm is there to deliver a result for you. In cases of family law in particular, a strong and understanding relationship is best. 2. Have an initial consultation: As with us here at Robertsons, take advantage of any initial consultations to sound out the law firm.

Does their marketing set an appropriate level of expectation when you meet the team or attend their premises? It should! 3. Don’t rush: Take the time you have to do your research and reflect on your findings. Is price really the most important factor? In matters of straightforward conveyancing and Will writing, this is often the case. But if your story is a little more complex, it’s worth seeking the most qualified and affordable law firm. “Robertsons Solicitors have processed both family matters and conveyancing for us in the last two years. We have been delighted with the service they provide. They have worked quickly and we have been kept ‘in the loop’ throughout the entire process. No stuffiness here – a great team with knowledgeable and lovely people.”
