Talking about tourism, I popped in to our gorgeous Cardiff Castle recently and it reminded me what a real gem it is. Surprisingly, when I mentioned this to friends who live here, they say they’ve never been inside! Hopefully our conversation will encourage them to visit - it is well worth it.

Give them your support. They make our high streets more distinctive and more enjoyable to visit.

With history in mind, after a recent visit to Cornerstone, the stunning venue at the top of Charles Street near the city centre. The Grade II listed church has been tastefully and sympathetically restored and is now managed passionately by Spiro and Lisa Borg. Check out or cover feature on pages 22 to 25.

When the sun is shining, the Bay is always worth a visit. We love chilling out with a cool drink and people watching - nothing better on a long, hot summer day. See you in the autumn (my favourite season of the year)...

Also, in this issue you’ll find an excellent selection of independent businesses. Why independents? Because they are the life blood of our communities and City Life magazine has always championed them so please do the same.

Fabulous Welshcakes Original or Cranberry, and White Chocolate and Cinnamon. These are just two flavours of delicious Welshcakes available from Fabulous Welshcakes in Mermaid Quay, and now, for those visiting the city, Castle Arcade.

“Using only the simplest of ingredients.” Using only the simplest of ingredients – flour, sugar, milk, butter and griddled in batches to ensure freshness, they are best bought straight from the shop while they’re still warm, soft and fluffy on the inside. Perhaps it’s not etiquette to eat in the street, but hey, it would be rude (and very difficult) not to!

When a business has great staff, it shows. The atmosphere and general vibe of the place comes across and makes being there enjoyable. We caught up with Claire and Harriet of Blu Hair Design who have each been working there for ten years and tell us, in their own words, why they enjoy their jobs.

Claire Price

When I look back at my 10 years in Blu, I remember walking through the door as a young teenage girl and I have now become a mum to my son Louie (3) also a step mum to my wonderful stepson Harry (11) with my partner of 11 years Nathan to whom I am now married.

Who knows where the time goes? Ten years’ service at Blu Hair Design - wow what an adventure it has been!

There’s a saying, “Choose a job you love and you will never work a day in your life.” This is very true to me! I work with the best, and most of all, talented bunch of girls I have ever met who inspire me every day. Most of all I have two bosses, Hayley and Alexis, who have guided me to become a successful busy senior designer. I am forever thankful for their support. Last and not least, my clients, old and new, thank you for all your support and loyalty.

I class myself very lucky to have worked in such a young, vibrant salon. Blu is a very busy salon, so my role as Salon Coordinator is very important as I am the main link between the clients and stylists, making sure that the salon runs smoothly as possible. I can’t even guess how many calls I have answered, appointments I have made, guests I have welcomed over the last ten years. A decade is a long time, but I have enjoyed my time at Blu, who I think of as my other family. Blu is such great team to work with under the successful leadership of Alexis and Hayley. Thank you Blu for ten years of warmth, friendship and support. 12

With a wonderful heritage in hair dating back to the 1960s, Simon Constantinou’s award winning Cardiff based salon is ready for the summer months with his creative team of hair and beauty professionals.

SIMON CONSTANTINOU

Before

After

Based on the skills taught to him by his father, who migrated to this country from Cyprus to seek his fortune and open a business during the swinging 60s, Simon built upon his father’s legacy and opened his own salon in 1980, eventually relocating into his father’s original premises on Crwys Road in 2014.

This success has allowed them to grow their business over the years to offer some of the most comprehensive services within the hairdressing industry; from fringe trims to a full head of Great Lengths hair extensions, the Constantinou team believe you will be hard-pressed to find another salon with such an expansive range of excellent services.

Over the years the Constantinou name has become synonymous with hairdressing – certainly throughout Cardiff and the surrounding area, with the family becoming well known due to their success in the World Hairdressing Championships.

Speaking with manager Melanie, City Life found out just what is available. “We have some amazing colour experts who specialise in the latest trends including Balayage and Root Fades. Monika, our full time beautician, offers a top-to-toe service including her speciality Microblading. 14

Also we have staff who are experts in wigs and hairpieces; with human hair and synthetic pieces available, we can also custom make items with additional cutting and styling for ready-made pieces. All of which can take place within our private room. We work alongside the ‘Little Princess Trust’ charity, supplying a wig service to them, in addition to accepting hair donations and contributions made during our yearly ‘Tea & Tiara’ fundraiser.” For the Summer months we suggest investing in a hair treatment to keep your hair in the best possible condition. We offer different levels of in-salon treatments; Olaplex for strengthening the hair, Kerasilk De-Frizz for up to

6 weeks of managing frizzy hair, or Kerasilk Smoothing Treatment for up to 3 months of smoother, manageable locks.” With a wide variety of staff, all with their own specialities in different areas of hair care, Simon Constantinou truly is a brilliant salon to visit. “We have great staff retention. This means that we can provide a level of consistency to our loyal customers that you may not find in other salons. This also allows us to maintain a high level of quality across all of our team members, all of whom are ready to welcome our clients, from children to the elderly, with excellent service and a smile.”

After

If you need any more reason to visit Simon Constantinou, earlier this year they won the Business Growth Wales award for Health, Beauty and Wellness plus their stylist Nathan claimed first place in the NHF Welsh Bridal competition. Great achievements from a great salon!

Cardiff Castle is one of Wales’ leading heritage attractions and a site of international significance. Located within beautiful parklands at the heart of the capital, Cardiff Castle’s walls and fairytale towers conceal not only 2,000 years of history but some of the most beautiful interiors in the world.

Small dining room

GRAND DESIGNS From 1866 the 3rd Marquess employed the genius architect William Burges to transform the Castle lodgings. Within gothic towers he created lavish and opulent interiors, rich with murals, stained glass, marble, gilding and elaborate wood carvings. Each room has its own special theme, including Mediterranean gardens and Italian and Arabian decoration. Burges was one of the leading exponents of Britain’s mid 19th century gothic revival, and an architect who was responsible for some of the most extraordinary interiors of the period. Heavily influenced by the French architect Viollet-le-Duc, and by A N W Pugin, his architectural and interior designs were the very antithesis to the graceful and coherent classicism of the 18th century, which Burges called “the dark ages of art”. Instead, he was an uncompromising advocate of medieval design and his vivid interiors, which border on the fantastic, are bright with gilding, painting, stained glass, furniture and textiles. His rooms are warm and rich with red, gold and green generally dominant.

The overall effect is occasionally overwhelming, but never gloomy or dull.

Working in a distinctive style that became known as “Burgesian gothic”, most of his designs had an historical precedent and are often enlivened by a quirky and humorous individualism. Burges’ projects were nearly always highly elaborate and he paid great attention to each detail of his buildings, and to each stage of the design process. In many schemes this would include designing not only the structure, but also its decoration and furnishings. No doubt because of this, Burges was a costly architect to employ and many of his most spectacular proposals, such as those for London’s new Law Courts, or for cathedrals in Edinburgh, Lille or Brisbane, would have proved prohibitively expensive. Consequently comparatively few buildings by him exist. Burges travelled extensively throughout Europe and the near east throughout his career, measuring and drawing buildings, many details of which appeared in his subsequent work. 16

He was a supreme eclectic, finding inspiration in medieval European architecture, expecially that of 12th century and 13th century France. He also was interested in Arab and Japanese art, which he saw as art of the middle ages, uncontaminated by industrialisation.

After completing early works with Blore and Clutton, Burges went into independent practice. His first major commission came in 1863 with a competition for rebuilding the Cathedral of St Fin Barre in Cork, Ireland. The main influence here is 13th century French gothic, and despite its comparatively small size, the cathedral is built on a grand scale. Sculptural decoration always played a large part in Burges’ designs, and there are over 1200 pieces at Cork alone. Equally lavish are his two major churches, at Studley Royal and Skelton in Yorkshire, as well as his restorations at Waltham Abbey. With such commissions Burges became an instrumental figure in the renaissance of stained glass manufacture and his churches glow with colours.

The Arab Room, which dates from 1881

The Library

The Nursery

The Banqueting Hall chimneypiece

The Norman Keep

Lord Bute’s Sitting Room

His church furnishings, such as choir stalls, pews, lecterns and so on are all executed in his own particular style: bold, muscular designs that are highly individual.

All of Burges’ interiors have a theme, and at Cardiff the rooms are inspired by classical and medieval literature and history, depicted on mural paintings, tiles and stained glass.

Burges’ domestic designs are equally opulent, although his commission to build and decorate Knightshayes Court in Devonshire and Gayhurst, Buckinghamshire, did not advance much beyond the structure, and these interior decorative schemes remained incomplete.

These designs were realised by his team of artisans, which included amongst others, the sculptors Thomas Nicholls and Ceccardo Fucigna, the painters Horatio Lonsdale, Frederick Smallfield and Fred Weekes, and the stained glass artist Gualbert Saunders. This talented group worked with Burges on many of his most important schemes. A major Cardiff interior was the Summer Smoking Room. Here Burges’ impressive dark encaustic tiled floor is inspired by medieval work at Westminster Abbey, whilst the walls are covered with tiled panels (1874) showing the legends of the zodiac. These were painted by Frederick Smallfield in delicate tones of pale blue, pink and gold. The chimneypiece, a characteristically dominant design featuring a massive hood, was carved with scenes of courtly love by Nicholls before being painted and gilded.

Burges major patron was undoubtedly the 3rd Marquess of Bute, a wealthy and cultured nobleman who shared his architect’s vision of the medieval past. Bute commissioned Burges to transform his Welsh seat, Cardiff Castle, from a small, plain, if historic house, into a neo-gothic fantasy. It was a project that would last the rest of Burges’ life. Beginning with the Clock Tower in 1869, Burges created some fifteen interiors of extraordinary splendour, within five towers of fairytale aspect.

“Burges’ passion for gothic pervades every aspect of his work as a designer. ” 18

Some of the rooms at Cardiff Castle included Burges furnishings, and of these, the Library (1875-81) remains the only intact Burges interior, complete with bookcases and desks made by Gillow and carved by the Bute workshops. Lord Bute’s Sitting Room, The Bachelor Bedroom and the Summer Smoking Room also included examples of the few textiles Burges designed. These were usually of crewelled serge with gothic designs of diapers and bands. There is little, however, in the way of conventional Victorian cushioned comfort, which is always secondary to Burges’ medieval appearance. Burges interest in neareastern styles culminates in the Arab Room at Cardiff Castle, which is lined with marble, has Mishrabaya shutters fitted to the windows, and a spectacular Muqarnas ceiling, richly gilded and painted. Burges would prepare detailed drawings, cartoons and models for his interiors, which would be used by decorators such as Harland and Fisher, and later by Campbell and Smith, who worked on several of his schemes.

At Castell Coch, another commission for the Marquess of Bute in Glamorganshire, Burges’ academic approach to the restoration of the structure becomes highly individual in his interiors, which like those at Cardiff, are elaborate gothic fantasies. The Drawing Room, with its spectacular domed ceiling decorated with birds and butterflies against a sky blue background is particularly impressive, although it was actually completed after Burges’ death by his assistants J S Chapple and William Frame. Whilst the Welsh projects were underway during the 1870’s, Burges began creating his own home in Kensington. Tower House in Melbury Road was an astonishing tour de force of his thoughts and ideas, and was described as being “massive, learned, glittering, amazing” and “strange and barbarously splendid”. The rooms of Tower House are not large, but appropriately they show how at home the short-sighted Burges was working on a small scale. Many of his interiors have an intricate jewellike quality. The Library, lined with the wittily painted ‘Alphabet’ bookcases, is dominated by another of his spectacular

chimneypieces, as is the adjoining Drawing Room. Both were carved by Thomas Nicholls, and the romantic theme of that in the Drawing Room, Chaucer’s ‘Roman de la Rose’ is echoed in the painted walls and ceiling (187780) which Fred Weeks decorated with legendary and mythical lovers.

memorable interiors of the period, but also an interest in medieval techniques which were later revitalised by the arts and crafts movement. William Burges, 1827-1881 British Art-Architect and Designer

Burges’ passion for gothic pervades every aspect of his work as a designer. His furniture is amongst the most striking of the nineteenth century, and is often spectacularly painted. When shown to the public at the 1862 International Exhibition in London, his pieces excited much interest. One of these, the ‘Yatman’ Cabinet of 1858, now at the Victoria and Albert Museum, is a fine example of ‘Burgesian’ furniture - colourful, highly decorated and amusing. Burges was the first to create “pre-Raphaelite” furniture, but his pieces were individual commissions, either for himself or for specific patrons, and his designs were never mass produced. By the time of William Burges death in 1881, the gothic revival was more or less a spent force. However, his legacy not only included some of the most 19

Cornerstone on Charles Street, in the heart of Cardiff, is the creative and culinary vison of Spiro and Lisa Borg, Cornerstone is a triumphant transformation and fast becoming one of Cardiff ’s must visit venues.

CORNERSTONE

Cornerstone, Cardiff ’s newest conference, arts centre and community hub opened its doors to the Welsh capital in September 2016 and has been a distinctive Cardiff landmark for over 160 years. The beautiful Grade II listed building, with its dramatic colourful frontage and magnificent interior, was originally opened in 1855 as Ebenezer Chapel, the first Neo gothic church in Cardiff.

“Cornerstone is steeped in history” Renovated in 2015-2016 with the help of the Heritage Lottery Fund after being purchased by the Catholic Archdiocese of Cardiff, Cornerstone is now a hub for the local community, business, arts and weddings, and caters for parties, weddings, VIP dining, corporate meetings, concerts, exhibitions and more. It features a cafe, communal spaces for local events, and rooms to suit any occasion.

“We have been most surprised by the response of people who actually used the church in its previous guise,” said Spiro. “They really love what’s been created and they appreciate the quality of the work. Every step of the way, we have thought carefully about the impact of the renovation and what it will mean to the personality of the building.” It was officially opened by HRH the Prince of Wales in December 2016, and it’s been serving the people of Cardiff ever since. No surprise then that, in 2017, Cornerstone was awarded the 2017 Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors Awards, Wales Building Conservation Award. Something the whole restoration team are understandably proud of. STEEPED IN HISTORY Cornerstone is steeped in history, as a major landmark and community hub, and has been part of Cardiff life for over a century and a half. 22

Renowned for its dramatic, colourful frontage and magnificent open span interior, the building was created by leading Victorian architect, Robert George Thomas of Monmouthshire - a prolific architect of religious buildings in Wales. Thomas was to become one of the forefathers of modern Australia as founding planner of the city of Adelaide. Reflecting its international appeal, Cornerstone is characteristically faced in multi-coloured ballast stones from ships that plied between the port of Cardiff and more exotic shores. RECENT HISTORY Back in 2010, the chapel was vacated by its Welsh-speaking Presbyterian congregation as it required prohibitively expensive restoration. Fortunately, the building was rescued by the Catholic Archdiocese of Cardiff, which purchased the chapel in 2012. Aided by a £1.2 million Heritage Lottery Fund grant, the building was re-born as

Cornerstone, transformed into a centre of community life within Cardiff ’s bustling city centre, tastefully and sympathetically preserving its historic architectural fabric. Now a vibrant and exciting mixed-use community hub and corporate venue, Cornerstone has quite literally been a ‘cornerstone’ of the community for generations to come. Director Spiro Borg said, “Now we have opened the building more than ever before to the community in the widest sense, becoming a much needed new hub for many sections of society in Cardiff. We’re really proud of that. With a unique ambience and awe-inspiring interior, Cornerstone is providing a perfect venue for conferences, seminars, meetings, corporate hospitality, private parties and dinners, or just a plain and simple cup of coffee.”

Cornerstone hosts a meeting room, private dining room, a mezzanine floor and the truly awe-inspiring Great Hall for your next gathering. The facility is fully equipped with WiFi access and also provides access to a full-depth stage and large screen TVs for presentation needs. Cornerstone is available for: n Family functions n Wedding receptions and parties n Private dining and corporate events n Performances, plays and concerts n Media events n Art exhibitions and installations n Meetings and conferences

“Beautiful, awe-inspiring and tranquil.” 23

SUPPORTING THE ARTS Cornerstone is also Cardiff ’s newest arts space, benefiting from a full-depth stage, historic purpose-designed acoustics, and a truly inspiring space for art that will get your creative juices flowing. “Our Great Hall Dewi Sant has a capacity for various seating arrangements, and our stage is perfect for rehearsals, drama, and musical productions,” says Spiro. “We are also committed to working with artists and invite they can contact us with their exhibition and installation ideas.” CUISINE AT CORNERSTONE Renowned for superbly imaginative cuisine, the talented, award-winning in-house team at Spiros Fine Dining Caterers are on hand to ensure your event is tailored exactly to your needs and budget, with consummate taste, style and professionalism. “We have over thirty years’ experience of working with venues of all sizes,” says Spiro. “The team based at Cornerstone are on hand to handle every aspect

When Phil Harris was set to marry his fiancé Emily, he needed suits for himself and his father-in law. He had heard great things about Hawkes in Morgan Arcade, Cardiff, and decided to pay owner Russell Scott-Lawson a visit. The rest is history.

SARTORIA ELEGANTE! STYLISH TAILORING BY HAWKES

How long have you been together? Emily and I have been together for almost ten years. How did you propose? We went on a holiday to California two years ago and I proposed on a pier at sunrise. We were jet- lagged, so went for a jog early in the morning. This is when I popped the question. When was the big day? Our wedding was on the 6th of May 2018. Where did you get married? We got married in Tuscany in a small town called Gambassi. How did you hear about Hawkes? I lived in Cardiff so have walked passed it a few times.

Hawkes was also recommended to me by a friend. Did you go anywhere else first? I went to have a suit fitted in London but decided it was too far to commute for fittings. Why did you choose Hawkes? He was based in Cardiff, so it was more convenient for me to go in for regular fittings. Russell was great! Are you a customer of Hawkes? I have only ever bought my wedding suit from Hawkes but will definitely go there again after the service I received. What did Russell supply to you? He supplied me with a 3-piece Without Predjudice suit that he tailored to my size, making it a nice slim fit. 28

My father-in-law chose to have a suit made by Russell with a very unique reverse peak collar. The collar had to be made locally and he was thrilled with the result. His experience with Russell and Hawkes was the same as mine, and he was equally thrilled with how everything turned out. Describe your suit… It is a blue suit with a blue chequered waistcoat. The suit itself is a solid colour with no patterns. I would say it was slim fitting, but I am not a skinny guy so, to the average eye, it would just look like a well-fitted suit. In fact, I have always been convinced that suits tend to look better on skinny guys. Suits don’t tend to hang off my frame very well as I have done some weight training over the years.

However, I was thrilled with how it turned out and felt it is the first suit I have ever worn that has suited my frame. How long did they take to make? The suit was available immediately and, after a few tweeks, was ready to pick up in a few weeks. Were you pleased with the service offered to you? Thoroughly. I felt that Russell cared about giving me the best product he could. He was always there to meet me and dealt with me personally, which I appreciated. How did the suits look on the big day? The suits looked fab on the day. I had many comments about how well fitted they were.

Would you recommend Hawkes to others? Yes absolutely. I feel the service I got there was five stars, and the suits were perfect. The quality and fit are so good that I can see me wearing mine for many years to come. Where did you go on honeymoon? We stayed in Italy and travelled down the coast. It was lovely.

“I have only ever bought my wedding suit from Hawkes but will definitely go there again after the service I received. 29

Dr Sohère Roked (pronounced Sa-hair Row-ked) is a General Practitioner with a specialist interest in Integrative medicine. Her passion is to help empower patients to take control of their healthcare using a range of tools.

HORMONES

“Dr Roked uses a combination of approaches.”

THE ULTIMATE BALANCING ACT Born in England and brought up in Wales, Sohère studied medicine at Southampton University and graduated in 2003. She has worked across hospitals in England and Wales, in the specialties of A&E, general medicine and surgery, women’s health, otolaryngology, and spent three years working as a psychiatrist before becoming a GP. It was this broad knowledge of medicine that made her realise that the current conventional medical practice is far from complete. It did not provide her with the tools to understand and address the emotional, spiritual, environmental, social, nutritional, lifestyle and psychological issues that influence the health and wellbeing of so many patients. Not all conditions fully improve with conventional treatments, which is something Dr Sohère has seen as an NHS GP.

She has a strong belief that to achieve true health, you must look at the physical in conjunction with the mind as the two are closely linked and impact on each other, and this is often overlooked in conventional NHS health care. Dr Sohère has a broad range of knowledge about both conventional and holistic medicine, and uses this to combine the two in her recommendations for better health, which is called Integrative Medicine. She has studied with the British College of Integrative Medicine and has been taught by experts in the field from the UK, Australia and the USA with the British College of Integrative Medicine in the U.K and under Dr Neal Rouzier (Medical Director of the Preventive Medicine Clinic, Palm Springs, California) as well as the Cenegenics Institute, A4M and the Institute of Functional Medicine, and is now recognised as one of the few GPs in the UK to cover both conventional and holistic medicine. 32

Dr Roked’s covers a wide range of concerns, such as exhaustion, chronic/ adrenal fatigue, menopause, fertility, thyroid disorders and menopause, with her number one aim to decrease her client’s symptoms. With her warm, friendly, down to earth manner, Dr Roked uses a combination of approaches, including bio-identical hormones, encouraging each patient to see themselves as a ‘whole’ and, wherever possible, using natural healthcare that works in synergy with the body. She looks at nutrition, fitness, stress and digestive health as well as potential chemical imbalances and the presence of parasites, toxicity, chronic inflammation and body acidification, treating as necessary to restore the body back into balance to help to achieve a happier, healthier day to day life. In addition, Dr Roked is the author of The Tiredness Cure. Dr Sohère has been prescribing bioidentical hormones for many years and sees hormone balance as the foundation of health.

She also believes in the importance of preventative medicine and creates individualised wellness programmes for her patients to achieve optimum health.

The key is to look at the person in front of her, listen to them, and treat them holistically, taking into account their preferences and lifestyle.

Some women feel they must just suffer at this time of life, or see taking hormones as a failure. Studies are now showing taking hormones at the start of the menopause benefit a woman not only in terms of symptoms, but in terms of cardiovascular health, bone density and neurological health. Hormones should not be feared, but you do need to see an expert who understands all the evidence and can help you weigh up the pros and cons.

As an NHS GP, Dr Roked started noticing an epidemic of exhausted, lethargic patients so she set her sights on a solution to their sleepiness. The empowering guide, The Tiredness Cure is now hailed as a cure to fatigue and the secret to more energy, feeling great and looking younger.

For Sohere, the two most important aspects are not doing harm and being of service to the patients she sees and listening to their needs. She provides them with options so that she can help their symptoms and give them a say in how they are treated. One size doesn’t fit all. She is also aware that some women feel fantastic on conventional HRT and she have no problem with that either.

In January 2017 Dr Roked launched The ALiVE Retreat in Fuerteventura, a 5-day retreat consisting of yoga, healthy eating, daily health talks, meditation and a medical consultation. Whatever your health concern Dr Sohère Roked can change your health and subsequently change your life.

Angeline Mansfield’s love of photography started as a little girl and became a vocation later in life when the need to create imagery for her children’s clothing business turned a childhood passion into a full-time career.

E VERY PICTURE

City Life Cardiff chatted to Angeline to find out more about her passion for photography.

How long have you been interested in photography? I’ve always loved taking photos! I still remember the feeling of excitement at getting my film developed from the pharmacy when I was a child. I used to take photos of my brother wearing all sorts of bizarre outfits and then I’d cut him out and stick him in a pencil pot or in a plant and photograph him again (he’s forgiven me now!). Over the years I guess I forgot about how much I’d loved it, until only a couple of years ago when my boyfriend bought me a camera for Christmas. At the time I’d set up an online business selling children’s clothing, so I used the camera to photograph children wearing the clothing and posted the images on social media. I began getting requests for photoshoots and all of a sudden photography was part of my everyday life.

What do you enjoy most about your work? I’ve always had a strong urge to use my work to help people and improve their lives in some way. Very early on I began to receive feedback from adults I’d photographed telling me that after their shoot they’d had the confidence to go on and pursue dreams they were previously too fearful of, and this is the reason I absolutely love my work!

I feel really blessed to have the ability to make people feel comfortable in their own skin and I love it when my clients’ eyes light up when they look at images of themselves that they love. I really enjoy showing people the things about themselves that they really appreciate and hearing what makes people happy. We always find that when the conversation to turns to things we love then creativity flows, and magic seems to happen.

“I’ve always loved taking photos!” 36

What type of photographs do you enjoy taking? I love it when my clients have an idea they’d like to go with and get excited about being creative with it. I am open to anything and often tell clients that if an image of them naked on a sky scraper in Kuala Lumper is what they desire then that can be arranged! I enjoy taking branding photos for coaches and businesses who are using their work to help people in some way too. It feels good to me because the images can bring them a much wider audience online, so they can help even more people, and I also feel inspired by the work they do.

I’m passionate about photographing women to improve their body confidence as well and, have been running ‘You are beautiful’ photoshoots in the Wedding Suite at Bryngarw House. These are boudoir style photoshoots and it is so much fun creating images that make people feel, amazing, sexy, beautiful or however it is they want to feel.

TELLS A STORY

What do you think makes your work stand out above others? I think everyone’s work stands out in its own unique way. I love looking at photos and really appreciate the work of other photographers. There are so many different styles, ideas and possibilities! All the clients I’ve worked with have been because they’ve seen images I’ve taken and feel that they are their ‘style’ and resonate with my work.

What type of clients do you work for? This really varies depending on what people are looking for. I have recently worked with an architect creating images for his website and advertising. I have worked with entrepreneurs who want to create themselves a passive income and need branding images in order to build a relationship with their online audience.

“I love it when my clients have an idea they’d like to go with and get excited about being creative with it.” I am currently working with people who have recovered from illness, who have undergone a mastectomy or have a stoma bag, to make them feel beautiful and celebrate their life and well-being. Sometimes clients just book a photoshoot because they’re inspired to do it for fun… and it really is fun. I feel very lucky to be able to do this every day. 37

Have you ever wanted to become your own boss? According to recent research, we are living in the era of entrepreneurship and there has never been a better time to give that business idea you’ve been thinking about a go.

BUSINESS IS BOOMING Amazingly, back in 2016, there were 80 new companies being born an hour in the UK! In 2017, there wasn’t any suggestion of this slowing down and LinkedIn, revealed that as jobs are being cut at larger, more established firms across Britain, sole traders and Small to Medium Enterprises (SMEs) saw a 13.5% increase in 2016-2017! There is plenty of enterprising talent here in the Vale of Glamorgan as the government and local initiatives have encouraged growth and investment in our local and independent companies! We have a widely diverse, rich and thriving business community that makes our local area interesting. Alongside the rise of entrepreneurship, the serviced offices industry has also seen a boom over the past decade as they provide flexible work spaces that are low risk and affordable.

“ Low risk and affordable.”

Serviced offices allow companies to keep on top of their outgoings with one all-inclusive monthly fee, appealing to start up’s and SMEs in particular as they require less upfront capital. With the convenience and flexibility offered by serviced offices, it’s even easier for entrepreneurs to get their foot on the business ladder as well as a simple process for businesses looking to relocate. Serviced offices offer short term, flexible and even rolling month-tomonth contracts that are perfect for new businesses starting out. Plus, if you’re a business looking to branch out in a new location, short term serviced offices can be a perfect way to test your product in a new area. The Business Centre (Cardiff) is home to a thriving business community here in the Vale, with a variety of diverse businesses working in a range of industries from financial services and cybersecurity to the health sector. The Business Centre offer a range of Office Space options and sizes, Virtual Offices and Meeting Rooms to hire. 38

All residents of The Business Centre can take advantage of the free onsite gym, ample free parking as well as 24/7 access to the centre. A number of businesses at The Business Centre have swapped a more traditional leased office space for a Serviced Office space, and chose to make their home at The Business Centre. We spoke to them to find out why.

Andrew - Bright Oak

Andrew Graveson and his team at Bright Oak are helping people across Wales and the UK to tackle what has been identified as ‘problem debt’. Recent research revealed that one in six adults struggle to make ends meet each month. Bright Oak helps them to address the initial crisis and then work towards clearing the debts altogether over a period of time. Andrew started Bright Oak back in 2007, working from his home before taking office space in Cardiff Bay. As they began to expand, they made the decision to move to Penarth in 2014. However, in 2017, their landlord required the office space back, leaving Andrew and his team searching for a new base. It was important for Andrew to avoid the rush hour traffic in and out of Cardiff and, after visiting The Business Centre, they fell in love with the family business atmosphere that tenants enjoy here, as well as the short commute, in fact, it only takes Andrew a mere ten minutes to get to the office from his home in Penarth!

Paul & McNamara - South Wales Recorder

Sharan - Caremark

New to The Business Centre family is Sharan and her team at Caremark Cardiff & Vale of Glamorgan, working with vulnerable clients such as the elderly and those who suffer from Dementia. Sharan and her team needed a home for their business that was easily accessible to all of the Vale as well as some flexible, additional space for them to hold training and support events for their staff. With flexible rolling contracts, excellent amenities and an easy commute just ten minutes from Cardiff Bay and Penarth, The Business Centre ticked all of the boxes for the team at Caremark Cardiff & Vale of Glamorgan.

“ All residents of The Business Centre can take advantage of the free onsite gym, ample free parking as well as 24/7 access to the centre.”

The South Wales Time Recorder, is in its 40th year of business and imports and sells time management systems through the UK and Europe. They came to The Business Centre earlier this year when their private offices were damaged during the storms, they initially moved to The Business Centre temporarily. However, they loved working there so much that they made the decision to not return to their previous premises. With Masons Self Storage next door, South Wales Time Recorder makes use of having both facilities so close together. As well as enjoying the amenities and atmosphere of The Business Centre, in just the short time they have been there, their turnover has increased as well as the birth of their new company, Charge Locker Ltd which imports and supplies secure mobile phone charging lockers for people who want to charge their mobile phone in places such as cafe’s, bars and restaurants. For them, having the serviced office space makes sense as they don’t have to worry about energy bills, refuse collection or office cleaning! If you’re a small business looking for low risk office space or you’re ready to see what it’s like to become your own boss and test the waters with your big idea, why not see how the team at The Business Centre could help your business?

Neil Munn, an accomplished former professional boxer and Head Coach and trainer at Penarth Amateur Boxing Club has launched an elite range of boxing and training products.

POWER HOUSE

City Life popped into the Station Road gym to find out more. How’s life Neil? You’ve expanded your product line since we last met… It’s all good. I had developed the basic range to ensure that my youth boxers had a good product to work with. There’s so much over-priced rubbish out there and I wanted to make sure that we were using really good gear. Are your products available to other boxers, trainers and gyms? We have a secure website and all the products are available there.

“ This elite range will take the punishment that pro boxers will throw at it.”

Why have you developed the new elite range? I wanted to step it up a bit. Obviously this range costs more but the quality is excellent and superior to anything else we’ve produced. Developing the previous range gave me huge feedback so I’ve put a lot of effort into ensuring this elite range will take the punishment that pro boxers and trainers will throw at it.

What are your plans for the next year? I love training with my personal clients. I’ll be working hard with the young boxers - we have some really promising ones, and I’ll be trying to get the NMPower brand out there. I think I have the best job in the world but, you know what we say, no pain - no gain!

Have you had any feedback so far? Yes, it’s been brilliant. Customers like the attention to detail. They also appreciate that I listen to their feedback so they feel they have contributed to making a great product even better.

For more information and to view the latest NMPower products, visit the website or call Neil on 07773 550401.

City Life Magazine has been close to the wonderful people at Precision Hair Design ever since they first opened back in 2015. So it feels right that we should be the ones to intro-duce you to Precision’s brand new team member Josh!

PRECISION

WELCOME TO HAIR DESIGN

Hello Josh, congratulations on becoming a part of the team. Can you tell us a little about yourself? I started doing work experience in a salon and quickly realised how much I loved the whole thing. Shortly after, I started my training to become a fully qualified hairdresser. I am so lucky that I was able to discover my passion for this industry. It’s been thirteen years since my first day of work experience and here I finally am, working my magic at Precision. So this is a brand new adventure for you then? It is. I wanted to join a well-established salon that gave me opportunities for growth and development. The team at Precision are so friendly; the salon is fun, creative, and has a brilliant atmosphere. This place gives me the opportunity to continue my development with up-to-date training which is so important in an industry where trends are constantly changing.

Can you tell us a bit about your hairdressing style? I look after a lot of professional clients so my style is always on trend. I enjoy all aspects of hairdressing but find that my speciality is short hair. I absolutely love it. The job satis-faction I get from seeing a client walk out of the salon having gone from drab to fab is great. How do you spend your time when not working at Precision? I have a partner and an eight year old son, so a lot of my free time is spent with them. I also love my holidays so when I am not in the salon or with my family you can find me sipping a Strawberry Daiquiri on the beach (vodka based of course!). If you hadn’t discovered your passion for hairdressing what do you think you would have been? A travel agent in the winter, or maybe a gardener in the summer. I just love the sun and being out in the fresh air! 43

So why should people visit you at Precision? Years of experience have taught me to understand the clients’ needs. They should come and see me for a gossip over a glass of wine and a wonderful experience in an award winning salon. Also if they show this article to us they can receive £10 off their first ser-vice with me!

“It’s been thirteen years since my first day of work experience and here I finally am, working my magic at Precision.” Precision Cardiff 298 North Road, Cardiff CF14 3BN 02921 321 161 www.precisioncardiff.co.uk

Four years ago we purchased a PC from Dorsetbased manufacturer Chillblast and its performance has been stellar. Nothing lasts forever though, and although still fully-functional the time felt right for an upgraded system.

BUILDING A PC

IS A BLAST

As we were so pleased with the previous PC that we went straight back onto the Chillblast website to see what new and delightful machines they were offering. With a varied selection covering everything from gaming to photography and architecture it was clear there was likely a machine here with our name on it, but which one was right for us? It was at that moment we stumbled across the ability to fully specify a computer from the ground up, (or should that be case up!). With a beautiful Corsair Spec-Alpha case selected we were ready to run riot within the parts lists, selecting all the lovely components I’ve been researching recently.

Thankfully when selecting things that don’t go together, the website prompts you and not allows one to re-select the part in question; very handy when you don’t know every single in and out of building a PC. I then settled on a stunning looking ASUS motherboard, a new 6-cored Intel Core i5 8600K processor and a Chillblast water cooler to keep things chilly. As we wanted to mix publishing with a spot of PC gaming, the GeForce GTX 1080 seemed the logical choice for the graphics card! With the other parts selected, often with the help of their “Recommended Part” feature, we had created our own custom spec system with great ease. 46

With a larger budget or different needs, the choices were almost endless. With anything from a plain and understated black tower to a rainbow of colours provided by RGB LEDs and components, it really does have something for everyone.

“With the other parts selected, often with the help of their “Recommended Part” feature, we had created our own custom spec system with great ease.” With our PC complete we were ready to checkout, all with the knowledge that Chillblast still provides an industryleading warranty covering shipping, parts and labour charges for two years, then labour for another three and even technical support for its lifetime. This was the first time we’ve had the confidence and freedom to “create” a PC but we were still given enough support to know that we were choosing the right bits! The experience is seamless and something that we encourage anyone to have a stab at.

EVERY MOMENT M ATTERS Talented photographer and videographer Ben Armstrong is quickly making a name for himself in the industry. Capturing the emotion of events, businesses and people, Ben believes that video is a marketing tool that every business can’t afford to ignore.

Gower Life chatted to Ben to find out more about his passion for the moving image. How long have you been interested in photography and videography? I have been interested in film and photography most of my life. As a youngster, I use to watch a lot of films and wish I could one day make something that people could watch that would either make them laugh or smile. It’s all about the emotion. What do you enjoy most about your work? I really enjoy capturing moments that make people smile or refresh their memory from a time in their life. That’s where my passion lies - being able to meet lots of new people on my journey is an added bonus. What do you think makes your work stand out above others? When I’m working with businesses, I aim to put them at ease so the essence of the business shines through. I think when you watch one of my videos there is a certain style or energy to my work.

It means a lot to me to capture a venue or event correctly so that it ends up either being a wonderful memory for someone, or a superb marketing tool. I like to work closely with the customer to capture their hard work in a fun and energetic way. What does a video cost? The budget starts with time taken filming - then I put the clips together. This is called the editing process. From there I add the music that sometimes needs to be licensed depending on what the client wants. Event coverage with music ranges from £395.00 - £1,500 depending on the length of the shoot, music and editing time. What about weddings? Weddings are usually a full day of filming, with lots of footage to go through. Sometimes I’ll have two people filming (one with the girls and one with the boys). Given the nature of this ‘once in a lifetime’ occasion, we tend to spend more time capturing as many precious moments as possible, so this is reflected in the price. 49

length of film. I’ve also been asked to travel abroad to cover weddings which I’m happy to do. What type of clients do you work for? I have been very lucky in my career as a videographer to be asked to work for magazines, holiday companies, charities and corporate events such as The Brogue Trader and Maserati. I recently covered Penarth Fashion Week and really enjoyed working with the RNLI on the project.

“ I really enjoy capturing moments that make people smile.” If you would like a video for your business or special event, please get in touch by calling 07766 106701 Please check out Ben’s videos on the GoodLife YouTube channel. Search for ‘Good Life Productions’

Kaely Backland of Usk welcomed us into her beautiful home and told us why she chose to work with Alexander James Bifold. How did you hear about Alexander James? I wanted some beautiful bifold doors. I researched online and found the Alexander James Bifolds website. I liked the look of it. It looked very professional and gave me the confidence to give the company a call. What made you choose to work with Alexander James? They came across very professional, both on the phone and when their representative, Andrew, initially came out to talk about their products and service before and after installation. What work did Alexander James carry out for you? They installed a set of bi-folding doors with four doors which open on to the garden. What difference have the doors made to the way you live? I already had PVC bi folding doors which were a substandard product and not fit for purpose. After talking with Andrew from Alexander James, and going with his advice to choose their aluminium product, I couldn’t be happier. The doors are not only a better quality product but, aesthetically, they are more pleasing - especially since I could almost choose any colour I wanted and, finally, the big plus - they actually work! Before I hardly bothered opening the PVC doors but now I use them all the time. I was so pleased with the work from this company that I have been back to fit all new windows throughout the property as well!

Do you have what it takes to become an online millionaire? If you’ve ever wanted to pursue your own business, perhaps selling your own homemade crafts or trading in antiques, with the rise of the internet, it’s never been easier, or has it?

ONLINE MILLIONAIRES As we’ve seen a decline on the high street, online marketplaces such as eBay, Amazon and Google Shopping are booming, but what are the challenges that small businesses face?

Over the past 5 years, millionaire businesses registered as sellers on eBay in the UK has jumped over 50%! Research undertaken by GS1 UK has shown that for many businesses, in particular Small to Medium Enterprises (SMEs), are choosing to sell their products through online marketplaces over a traditional brick and mortar site. Whilst some SMEs test the waters with online marketplaces to trial new products, some are using them as their sole selling channel as they provide access to millions of customers. At Masons Self Storage, they have definitely seen the shift towards online sellers over the past few years. Back in 2016, just 13% of their storage facility was being utilised by business customers, by the start of 2018, that had jumped to almost 40%!

Whilst they had always had professionals such as solicitors, accountants and medical practitioners who needed a secure space to store files and archives, over the past 7/8 years, they have seen the online seller grow rapidly. These quickly emerging business customers require a different type of service. Responding to these changes The Masons Group invested over £1,200,000 to create a secure, high-tech, 24/7 access storage facility with a brand new Business Zone, wider corridors and a large ESCORTA lift, along with pallet and forklift trucks, collection and delivery services, as well as, a Business Lounge offering customers the ability to manage their business whilst onsite with complimentary WiFi, work stations and refreshments. Located in the Vale, just 10 minutes from Cardiff Bay and Penarth, their business sellers get to cut out the commute! We spoke to three of Masons Self Storage business customers based here in the Vale to find out how they got started in the online space. 52

Andrew - Haya Ltd

Haya Ltd is owned by Andrew, who is dedicated to providing excellent quality remote control toys and has been with Masons for 10 years. Andrew was drawn to Masons because of the great location as well as the 24/7 access, which is particularly helpful at Christmas! Andrew sells his products wholesale to toy shops as well as directly to his customers through the Haya website and eBay. Whilst online marketplaces are excellent for connecting businesses with consumers across the world, Andrew has found that this can lead to its own set of challenges, such as international distribution and postage.

Alicja - b4beds Ltd

Similarly, to Andrew, Alicja was drawn to the easy access at Masons Self Storage as well as the use of the fork lift truck for her deliveries. Alicja started her business, b4beds Ltd back in 2011 when she was working as a supply teacher and her sister was pregnant. Her sister was struggling to find the perfect cot at the right price, so Alicja began looking online and found a supplier that was perfect and affordable. Alicja continued to work with this supplier and began to sell through eBay. At the beginning she was selling 15-20 cots a week, now she sells that a day! Similar to Andrew, Alicja discovered challenges with distribution and shipping so restricted her sales to the UK. Taking advantage of the perks of online marketplaces, Alicja has cut down the costs of running her own website by utilising eBay and Amazon, but she says the market is saturated, which creates a price war.

“ The brand new Business Zone creates a unique space for its Business Customers.”

Michelle - Twenty12 Flooring

Wife and husband team, Michelle and Chris, started their business journey, with Twenty12 Flooring, solely online back in 2009, and after two years of having stock delivered to their home, and, seeing their business really taking off, they moved their stock to Masons Self Storage. As the business continued to expand online, the couple found that there were still certain customers who asked to visit a showroom. Responding to this ‘multi-channel’ need, they now also have a purpose built showroom onsite at the Masons Self Storage facility to display their range of flooring options as well as continuing to offer an extensive online service for those customers who prefer it!

If you’ve had an idea for an online business for a while and are ready to jump into the world of selling through online marketplaces, why not see how the team over at Masons Self Storage can help you join the ranks of online millionaire sellers?

Today Michelle and Chris take full advantage of the Masons forklift truck for deliveries, the much wider corridors and the onsite free parking, which is really convenient and useful for their customers who are visiting the Twenty12 Flooring showroom.

Do you want to be a better version of yourself? If the answer is yes, then Bob Kennedy of Anchor Success can help. We caught up with Bob to find out more about what can be achieved.

ANCHOR SUCCESS

What is the name of your company? The business is called Anchor Success for two reasons. Firstly, my background in the Royal Navy (you can read more about that below), and secondly, because we all need an anchor in life to succeed. My business helps my clients be the best version of themselves – whether that’s in their job, in sales, in business, or in their personal lives.

How long has this been established? Anchor Success was established a year ago. Tell us about your background and your career to-date. I started my working life in the Royal Navy, spending 10 years in the service in several roles. The last three were spent on board the royal yacht, HMY Britannia – what an experience! It was wonderful life which took me to many different places and in which I made some firm friends. It also taught me how to relate to people and how to really listen to people. Those skills became hugely useful in the next 20 years of my career in sales, including as the General Sales Manager for Car Shop, Sales Manager at Car Craft, and sales representative at Sparshatts Group. I spent almost nine years with BT as the Regional Sales Manager for Wales, the Midlands, and the South West with a team of 16.

“A range of techniques which help us change our mindset.”

From learning sales techniques and carrying them out on the car showroom floor to managing, training, and motivating my team, sales is now in my blood – just like the Royal Navy put salt in my blood! I became self-employed four years ago and was the Director of online marketing company Mynt Media until 2017. I’m also the Managing Director of mobile app company Mynt Apps. So, I understand the trials and joys of starting and running your own business. There can be a lot of stress and it can be a lonely place and having someone to talk to who has been through all that is important to many of my clients. I’m a fully qualified Master Practioner & Coach of NLP, Master Practioner of Time Line Therapy, Master Practioner in Hypnosis and Practioner in Kinetic Shift. What services do you offer? The services I offer are: n Personal Breakthroughs – Helping people who feel they are stuck somehow in their personal or working lives n Sales Training – Teaching people techniques to establish rapport, overcome objections, and close the deal n Sales Coaching – Giving people the confidence and skills to achieve their sales targets n Sales Consultancy – Advising businesses on how to train and manage sales staff, set and monitor sales goals, and give useful feedback to employees 54

n Facebook Live Training – Helping

people to amplify their message out on the world’s biggest social media platform n Confidence Workshops - helping people find their inner confidence using simple and easy to use techniques. Who are your customers? Generally, they are people who feel stuck, people who feel they need to take on a fresh outlook before they can move forward. That could include people with issues in their job or business, or people who feel stuck in their personal or family lives. My clients can be people in the corporate world who are looking to improve or change their careers, business owners who have lost the way and need to find the right path for them, or sales professionals who need to build a stronger connection with their customers and need help to do that. What is NLP? Neuro Linguistic Programming is a range of techniques which help us change our mindset and our behaviour. It gives you choices about the way you feel, act, and your physical state and it can profoundly change your thinking and transform lives and businesses. It examines the way we think, our minds, our mindsets, and how we communicate with other people. It looks at the body language and language we use, helping us to recognise patterns of behaviour and emotions we have adopted.

That allows us to understand them and change them. We are aware that NLP can help people in business, but can it also benefit the general public? Several of my clients have come to me with issues such as a lack of selfesteem or self-confidence, or repressed emotions such as anger, guilt, and sadness, which are holding them back in several areas of their lives. Using NLP can help them improve their relationships and friendships and give them the confidence they need in their working lives. What areas geographically do you cover? My clients are in the Cardiff, Newport, Swansea, and Bristol areas. What is your greatest achievement to-date using NLP? The transformation in my clients is definitely the best thing about my business. From feeling lost and unsure, having little confidence, I have seen them become focused, find the right way forward for them, and go on to tackle it. One of my clients had to make a tough business decision. Her business wasn’t performing as she’d hoped, it had hit financial difficulties, and was causing her a great deal of stress. She was feeling lost, unsure about what to do, and we used timeline therapy to help her look at her motivations and what was blocking her from taking action.

After the therapy, she understood she was carrying the weight of other people’s expectations and had been making decisions for them, instead of for herself. She decided that her business wasn’t her top priority, and that a creative project and her home life were far more important to her. To get that project finished, she needed to step back from the business and look for a job to help her finance it. How can it change peoples’ lives? NLP can help people find their real purpose and get the fulfilment which has been lacking for them. That transforms everything – from marriages and relationships to friendships and families, from career changes to starting new businesses. It has helped people overcome their fear of public speaking, get the jobs they want, move on from unhappy relationships, put family trauma behind them, and weather tough times in business. Once that purpose is there, and people understand they are in control and can set their own goals, their lives can be completely different. What do you love about what you do? Witnessing the transformation in my clients’ confidence, allowing them to be the best version of themselves that they were meant to be. I just love knowing I’ve helped them achieve that. 55

Is it expensive? To attend one of the open half day or full day classroom training breakthroughs start from £59 to £179 An initial one to one coaching sessions start at £125 for a 90 minute Power Session which includes Kinetic Shift to remove any negative feelings or emotions that are stopping the client moving forward. Prices for a 4 session one to one coaching package start from £795. A one to one 2 day Breakthrough Session based in the Village Hotel costs £1,500 which includes accomodation, meals and all the relevant techniques (normally £3,000). However if readers of City Life magazine quote AS50 they can access a 50% discount to £1,500. When you’re not coaching or or training what do you do to relax? I enjoy cycling, it’s a real passion. Not only does it allow you to see amazing countryside, it helps you get fit. Getting more active and fit is important to me. I’ve also started training for the Cardiff Half Marathon in October. What makes you stand out? Each one of us is unique and brings something special to what we do. The difference I bring is the combination of my experience and background, all of my years in sales and running my own business, and my passion for helping people. Vale Life reaches my target audience. I rarely advertise in any other publication these days. Russell Scott-Lawson Owner, Hawkes After creating Superman inspired jewellery and an unbreakable wedding ring for Laurence Fishburne, Cardiff jewellery designer Neil Rayment really is flying high.

STAR STRUCK What better way to commemorate the cinematic release of Man Of Steel than with a stunning jewellery creation inspired by Superman himself? As a fan of the superhero and friend of the film’s star Laurence Fishburne, award-winning goldsmith Neil Rayment wanted to create an out of the ordinary tribute in the shape of Kal-El’s Crystal - an homage to Superman’s birthplace, a timeless classic, expertly crafted in platinum and diamonds. “I was looking for something spectacular, I’m a huge fan of Superman and the franchise featured heavily in my childhood,” says Neil, owner and artistic director at Advanced Jewel Craft. “What better place to seek inspiration than the birth place of Superman?” Advanced Jewel Craft attracts clientele as sparkling as its bespoke pieces. The iconic brand has slowly blossomed since its inception in 2004 and is now a firm favourite amongst A-listers from LA to Abu Dhabi. Oscar-nominated actor Laurence Fishburne is one of Neil’s most prestigious clients. The pair met when Neil briefly switched jewellerymaking for acting and appeared alongside him in The Matrix sequels. Neil was honoured to be tasked with designing and creating Laurence and his wife Gina Torres’ wedding rings.

One of Hollywood’s real diamonds Laurence kindly took time out of his busy schedule to explain more about his experience of working with Neil. How did your friendship with Neil come about? We worked on The Matrix sequels together. We became friends on set and then I found out that Neil’s passion was for jewellery design. Have you kept in touch? Have you been over to Wales to visit him? Yes we’ve kept up with each other but still have not made it to Wales I’m sorry to say. I’ve heard that it’s a very beautiful country.

Neil designed and made your wedding rings. That’s a high pressure assignment - how was he to work with? He was terrific. The basic design was worked out between Neil and my wife. We’re delighted with the result. Can you tell us a little about the inspiration behind the design? Gina wanted something that would be unbreakable for me. I’m a would-be drummer, so I’m always beating things to hell. The platinum band and three diamonds are all a reflection of my personality and style. How involved were you in the design process? I’m very creative but I really felt it was best to trust both Neil and Gina on this one. It was our first custom jewellery experience. Neil often takes inspiration from films. If you could challenge Neil to design jewellery based on one of your previous films, which would it be? Probably King Of New York. I think that would be an interesting challenge for Neil but one I’m confident he could rise to. Created in his Cardiff Bay studio, Advanced Jewel Craft’s pieces are beautiful and exclusive. Neil adopts a personal approach, forging firm relationships with his customers. And while he works with A-list clients, his feet are firmly on the ground. “Jewellery is something that needs personal attention,” Neil says. “You can get entangled in the glamour, the parties, the shows, but the most rewarding thing is to see someone wearing one of my pieces and the pleasure it brings.”

After considering various local magazines to market the business in I decided to place an ad in both Vale and City Life to promote our wares, the only thing I can say is ‘WOW’. The response I’ve had from both publications has been staggering, literally staggering and now both publications are a permanent marketing expense within our strategy. If you haven’t tried it, you must! Chris Macnamara MD The Brogue Trader When it comes to price, versatility and finish, no other material can match it, which might explain why, for windows, doors and conservatories, aluminium is fast becoming the material of choice for the seriously savvy.

The UK may not be the manufacturing powerhouse it used to be but we still make shoes of exceptional quality. And yes, you pay a little more, but shoes of this quality (if you look after them) can last a lifetime. And you can’t say that about a lot of products these days.

THE LIGHT

FANTASTIC Vellacine have been manufacturing aluminium double glazing windows and conservatories in South Wales since 1978. We spoke to Managing Director, Mark Nayler about the resurgence of aluminium for windows and conservatories.

Vellacine has a solid reputation for supplying uPVC products. Why are you promoting aluminium? Aluminium went out of fashion simply because of problems with heat transfer between glass and frame. However, technological advances over the last ten years have meant that aluminium’s benefits of lightness and strength are making a serious comeback among consumers. We’re definitely noticing more enquiries, with customers asking us to cost a project alongside uPVC.

What are the benefits of aluminium? A warmer house, lower energy bills and less outside noise are just some of the benefits that our aluminium windows bring to the table. Increased security is important to customers. Our superstrong aluminium windows and superior locks help customers feel safer in their homes.

“The materials that we use are environmentally friendly, robust and durable. Our aluminium windows last for years without maintenance.”

Is aluminium eco-friendly? The materials that we use are environmentally friendly, robust and durable. Our aluminium windows last for years without maintenance.

What about colour? Our aluminium products can be custom-made for each property and come in almost any colour or style. They look great and our designs are highly attractive and certainly improve the look and value of a home. In addition to manufacturing aluminium products of the highest standard, we pride ourselves on the high standard of service we offer. Vellacine customers return to us time after time and most of our work is generated through word of mouth recommendation. We’re extremely proud of that. Why should customers buy aluminium windows and conservatories from Vellacine? They’ll be dealing with a financially strong, well established and highly regarded local company. Vellacine has been around a long time and we provide a fully comprehensive ten year guarantee with all our aluminium windows. As well as a full installation service, Vellacine offer an aluminium window replacement and repair service should any existing aluminium windows be damaged, show misting or just simply need a facelift.

PORT TALBOT

Cost of Cancer’s most successful charity ball The 4th annual charity ball in aid of Cost of Cancer was held on the 12 May at Blancos in Port Talbot and what a night it was! It was the charity’s most successful ball and raised over £5,000, which will help those who are struggling financially whilst going through treatment for cancer. The night started with a VIP reception and then carried on into the night. The band Omega Blend were on hand again to provide excellent entertainment. There was a balloon raffle and an auction. The night was finished off with a brilliant disco. Nicky Moss the charity’s founder said, “This year has been the hardest to organise but by far the best ball we’ve put on yet”. “ Thank you to everyone who came and to those who donated raffle and auction prizes. Also huge thanks to the volunteers who helped to make the night a success, we couldn’t have done it without you.” For more information on how you can apply for help please go to www.costofcancer.org.uk
